It’s the time of the year when we remain focused on the resolutions we vowed to keep soon after Auld Lang Syne was drunkenly warbled.

A

EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

nd, regardless of the fact that few of these ambitions make it beyond mid-year, their setting maintains its place in our New Year traditions. Despite the questionable nature of their attainment, at the heart of these annual goals is a desire for self-improvement. While our highest aspirations for ourselves often conflict with our daily desires, resolutions are designed to give our aspirations the upper hand. As a goal-focused A-type personality, I love the concept of hitting the reset button and starting the quest for advancement when the clock ticks over to mark the beginning of another year. But at the same time, I recognise the increasing pressure we are putting ourselves under to be the best at everything, perhaps encouraged by the increasingly visible nature of life through the social media lens. So in 2018 I vow to keep my standards high but my level of self-acceptance higher; to make plans and yet be okay if they occasionally fall through and to set goals, but be open to change. Remember that being brave is better than being perfect and have a beautiful and blissful 2018. The Metropol team is grateful to be with you all for the ride.

remember flicking through a magazine back home in Kiev – there was this beautiful photo of Christchurch. The article headline was ‘The most English town outside of England’, and I experienced that lightbulb moment.” Nataliya taught Russian at Canterbury University, did her PhD in Russian Studies and, through connections made with local performance art groups, began studying at Circo-Arts (at the former CPIT). She also became a professional statue – the Silver Angel brought much comfort and reassurance to many, postquake. In 2012 Nataliya founded her theatre company. “People kept asking what my company name was, but I didn’t have one. Then a friend suggested the initials of my name and NO Productions Theatre Collective was born.” Nataliya’s first production, My Beautiful Disaster, toured the Wellington Fringe Festival in 2013. “That was a huge learning curve in how to present your show and research your audience.” The Woman in Black marks her 14th production and runs from March 29 to April 1 at the Isaac Theatre. “We’re so fortunate to have the brilliant Julian Southgate as set designer – what he’s achieving is fantastic!” Never one to rest on her laurels, Nataliya recently launched the Canterbury Playwrights Circle, where playwrights have their plays table read by actors. “Playwrights too often end up being isolated. Connection is so important. I sense it acutely.” For more information, email no.productions.theatre@gmail.com.

one on one Amanda Billing has gone from playing one of Shortland Street’s most beloved characters to one of Shakespeare’s most ruthless. Thankfully this homegrown talent is just like the former and nothing like the latter.

T

here was a nationwide outpouring of grief when Dr Sarah Potts died from a virus in 2014, marking the culmination of Amanda’s role on the country’s longest running soap just shy of her 10-year

10 January 18, 2018 Metropol

Shortland Street anniversary. But now she’s living the dream, treading the boards in several theatre productions. Metropol talks to this truly loveable actress about bringing characters to life.

How different is Lady Macbeth to Dr Sarah Potts? Ha. Where do I begin? They’re about as different, at least circumstantially, as two (fictional) people could be. We know they’re ‘not real’ and yet they’re both substantial characters. Pottsy because she ‘lived’ for ten years in people’s living room five nights a week, so people got to know her pretty well day by day, and Lady M because Shakespeare communicates her nature very clearly, graphically in fact. Every word she speaks tells you what she believes and what she wants, and Pop-up Globe’s adaptation of Macbeth delivers this like a punch in the guts right from the start of the play. They’re both straight-talkers, they’re both super-smart, they’re both mothers. The biggest difference for me is that Sarah Potts is dead (unless you watch old clips on YouTube) and yet Lady Macbeth comes alive again and again, every time somebody gets to play her. That’s a very special thing. How are you enjoying being on the stage? As I type this I still have a few weeks before rehearsals start, but in general I absolutely love theatre. And I’m very excited about being part of the Southampton Company. I’m really looking forward to the chaos of making The Comedy of Errors come alive too, although I don’t know who I’m playing yet. This isn’t your first dabble with Shakespeare, what do you enjoy about this style of acting? It requires absolute commitment, it asks us as actors, every day, about ourselves, and it demands honesty. We can’t hide in Shakespeare and he celebrates everything about us as

GET READY FOR SUMMER

human beings, whatever our answers are. Having worked with Michael Hurst a lot, in big plays like The Threepenny Opera and Lysistrata, often very close to – sometimes in the middle of – the audience, I’m used to directly addressing them and often communicating with my back turned. It’s always a confronting, exposing experience, but I really love that. Text like Shakespeare is demanding and I have a responsibility to communicate the play to the audience, with all of my intellectual, emotional and physical might. There are absolutely no half measures. Sounds intense, right? It is. And that’s one of the reasons why people love Shakespeare. The Globe is a very special building and it shines a spotlight on this ‘style’ you refer to, which I think calls for the utmost clarity of thought, and for the willing amplification of the actor’s entire being. Sounds full-on, right? It is. It’s also really, really fun. Dr Miles Gregory, the creative director of Pop-up, calls the building an instrument and I am really looking forward to speaking Shakespeare’s words in the building designed to ‘play’ them. What’s the most fulfilling aspect of being an actress? See above! Haha. Being larger than life! Helping people feel their feelings! Helping people feel understood! What drew you to acting in the early years? I don’t really know. It’s just one of the things I’ve always done, despite the exposure that comes with it. If you weren’t acting, what would you be doing? Sometimes I don’t act because there’s no job around for me. In those times I love to explore new ways to create. I take photos of it all on Instagram. Life’s GOOD.

dark W matter of art

the

Some 80 percent of the universe’s mass is made up of a material scientists cannot directly observe. Known as dark matter, this mysterious element emits no light or energy.

12 January 18, 2018 Metropol

The Scarlet Woman Valerian

hich makes Dark Matter a fitting name for the first major review of New Zealand photographic artist Ann Shelton’s 20 year body of work; Dark Matter uncovers the unknown substance in Ann’s work, in which time, place, narrative, trauma and female authorship unfold in shifting and destabilising ways. Ann is one of New Zealand’s leading artists, operating where documentary and conceptual photography meet. Seeking insight and understanding of our collective histories and cultural memories, she excavates narratives buried within, or sitting upon, a psychological and hyperreal landscape. The Timaru born photographer is exhibiting at Christchurch Art Gallery until April 15, Christchurch Art Gallery director Jenny Harper says. “Ann Shelton’s recent work combines performance and photography. Through deep research, she highlights and draws attention to our varied and collective histories and to the phenomena of cultural memories. Shelton exposes and activates those various histories through photography and performance in her new series jane says.” Dark Matter presents a significant selection of past work, including some previously unseen photographs from the 1990s, and the more recent series, jane says (2015), which looks at histories that connect plants and female stories relating to fertility and reproduction. Also featured are early series’ that brought her to attention as an artist using photography, including Redeye (1995–97), which recorded the artist’s social scene in Auckland in the early 1990s, as well as works that show her transition from photographing others to photographing place, such as Abigail’s Party (1999) and K Hole (2000). Other bodies of work, a library to scale (2006) and room room (2008), illustrate the role of the photograph in the archiving and surveillance of social and personal life. Shelton says she offers new ways to look at histories that have been, and continue to be, manipulated and contrived in various ways. “My work investigates the social, political and historical contexts that inform readings of the landscape, archives and the cultural and medicinal use of plants.” Ann Shelton: Dark Matter has been organised by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and is on display at Christchurch Art Gallery from 16 December 2017 to 15 April 2018. Entry is free.

Connan Mockasin headlines the festival, with The Chills, and emerging artists Estere and Glass Vaults will also take the stage. Connan, who’s now LA-based, has toured with Radiohead and worked with music luminaries such as Neil and Liam Finn, James Blake and Charlotte Gainsbourg. “Getting Connan was a huge boost,” says Johnny Gibson, founder and director of Nostalgia Festival, “The last time he performed here in Christchurch was 2010.” Nostalgia has always actively promoted sustainability and waste reduction. Johnny mentions a black pig called Tulip who gets to feast on festival green waste. “The kids love Tulip. She’s dubbed our Festival Favourite Disposal Expert!” Nostalgia Festival will once again partner with the Heathcote Resident’s Association and Heathcote Primary School on a community fundraiser. Profits from Nostalgia tickets sold through Heathcote Primary will go towards Heathcote Youth Services. “It’s our way of involving the community and making them part of the conversation around the festival,” Johnny says. anuary 2017 was the first ever Downtown Street Party and was such a success we’re bringing it back in 2018,” says Rangiora Promotions Association organiser Belinda Topp. “Last year we exceeded 250 cars – classic cars, hot rods, muscle cars, rat rods and choppers. This time we expect an even bigger turn out of vehicles. “It’s free entry and everyone is welcome to bask in the beauty of these classic cars in this gorgeous setting, and shop and dine from local eateries and retailers.” Live music features include Assembly Required, The Wingers, The Sign of the Fire Bird and Auckland band Boom Boom Baby. The street party is in collaboration with Stottle Promotions, organisers for the main event – The 2018 Trillo Metals Muscle Car Madness car show. This high-octane experience is open to the public on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 of January, 10am to 5pm, at Rangiora Show Grounds. Alice Ridley gave a Pekachucha presentation last month titled ‘Navigating to neutral’. It was a simple presentation with a powerful message – that world sustainability can be achieved by all of us, in little ways, every day.

T

his 22-year-old fashion and food eco warrior runs her own radio show, ‘Saikuru Radio’ once a week on Radio RDU, interacting with listeners and callers about the myriad of ways we can achieve sustainability. Saikuru is Alice’s one-woman band. “It’s a social enterprise aiming to change mindsets of consumer thinking around the waste our clothing creates,” she says. “Saikuru is the Japanese word for cycle. I have always loved the Japanese culture around minimalism – less is more.” Alice was thrilled to be partnered with CoCA Gallery on December 16, 2017 for one of her famous clothing swap meets. “The opportunity to showcase the philosophy behind Saikuru at CoCA was fantastic! The clothes swap was to physically interact with the message of Ruth Watson’s ‘Geophagy’ exhibition. It was an amazing experience!” The final words of her Pechakucha presentation encapsulate Alice’s thoughts as to our planet’s future. “By taking small steps, every day in our lives – imagine the ripple effect. I believe our next generation does give a damn about the state we leave this world in, and the developed world has a major role to play in the more vulnerable countries – one step at a time.” For more information visit pechakucha.org/cities/christchurch/ presentations/navigating-to-neutral or find Saikuru on Facebook.

The face of the central city is changing at a rapid pace and residents and visitors will soon be able to enjoy new riverside bars, central city cinemas, a farmers’ market, a new swimming pool complex, and a new library.

M

ore than half a billion dollars’ worth of developments are set to open across the city this year and with them the CBD is experiencing somewhat of a retail renaissance. As we usher in a New Year, we look at some of the latest and greatest retail offerings in the central core and those soon to make their mark.

1.

2.

PLUME: The CBD is quickly reinstating its name as a boutique fashion destination, with the opening of two of New Zealand’s top clothing stores – Plume and WORLD in the McKenzie & Willis building on the corner of High and Tuam Streets. The stylish stores were neighbours in High Street before the earthquakes. Stocking brands including Margi Robertson’s NOM*D, Plume first opened in Cashel Street near the Bridge of Remembrance in 1992. A decade later it found its way to the boutique fashion strip opposite C1 Café before moving to Merivale when the earthquakes destroyed its High Street home.

WORLD: WORLD Christchurch was situated in the heritage ANZ Chambers at the corner of High and Lichfield Streets for two years before the earthquake destroyed the building and, postquake, it has held a concession space at Ballantynes. The fashion stores add to an already popular tenant mix within the McKenzie and Willis development at 181 High Street, including one of New Zealand’s largest and leading waxing and laser hair removal experts ‘Off and On’ and popular eatery Little High.

Founded in 2004 by two teenage friends, Boardertown – which sells snowboards, skateboards, streetwear and footwear – already has stores in Auckland and Queenstown.

NORTH BEACH: Trending street fashion store North Beach – which began in the 1990s with a market stall in Auckland and now sells street, surf, skater brands across the country – is also new to Christchurch. The company has leased 500sqm on Colombo Street, next to Ballantynes, which opened in December and brings the number of stores to 11, complemented by a strong online presence.

AS COLOUR: New Zealand’s largest retailer and wholesaler of blank apparel, AS Colour has moved from the site it has occupied for the past two years, on the corner of St Asaph and Durham Streets, to another highprofile corner location closer to the city’s central core. The company has recently opened a two-level store in the Stranges Lane complex, on the corner of High and Lichfield Streets, bringing the number of New Zealand stores to eight.

ike and Sally Jones recently celebrated 31 years being a part of this historic building. Purchased in 1978 by Sally’s parents, Maurice and Diane Phipps, Sally and Mike became involved in the family business in 1986, with their children growing up helping in the weekends. Thirty-one years operating a seven-day business has proven both challenging and rewarding however, they pride their longevity on the dedication of staff, some who have been with them for 13 years. “We call them our village family and we really owe our success to them. We don’t know how lucky we are to be serving the public of Canterbury and showcasing to our tourism market through a category one historic building,” Sally says. Mike can be found by the river most days, in the café or next door where boats and bikes are available for hire and Punting on the Avon is based. Whether behind the scenes pumping bike tyres, or faithfully maintaining the building, it is work he thrives on and takes pride in. The Boatshed Cafe offers great food made fresh on site seven days a week from 7am-5pm for breakfast and lunch. or 2018, perhaps it’s time to flirt with the fashionable possibilities and be resolute in your determination to take a walk on the wild side. It’s easy to play our most conservative sartorial cards because that’s what’s comfortable. But with designers working hard to liberate our creative streak when it comes to our wardrobe, let your inspiration and imagination roam free so they can wander into and enjoy all that a New Year of style has to offer. For 2018, that means bold prints, loud and proud colours, and extravagant fabrics. We have it on good authority that metallics are here to stay, and the new cool kids on the block will be checked prints, cropped trousers, fringing, leopard, leather, buckled shoes – especially flats – and lots of sparkle! Here’s to a more rebellious you in 2018. Remember, rules are made to be broken – particularly when it comes to your own style – so willingly emancipate yourself from your own.

STYLE DOCTOR

By Bridget Hope, Magpie Style Wardrobe Director

THE ART OF

DRESSING FOR WEDDINGS There is nothing like an impending wedding to dress or suit up. Weddings are a special occasion and, by their very nature, a bonafide reason to have you looking the part. For wedding dressing success, these hard and fast rules will help raise the stakes the big day.

FOR MOTHER OF THE BRIDE + GROOM: These two roles seem to bring the most amount of pressure and stress, second only to that of the bride. The first thing to remember here is that you are essentially dressing for a family photo that will sit on your mantle for years (no pressure!), the photo in question being of you, your partner, the wedding couple and your family, or the bride and groom and both sets of parents. You will almost certainly not be photographed with the bridesmaids as part of the wedding party, so there is no need to worry about coordinating there. One mistake that many mothers of the bride or groom make is going for very bright outfits. Unless it is going to be a very bright wedding, all this serves to do is take visual attention away from the bride – your daughter or daughterin-law. As a rule, look for clean or soft block colours. Avoid prints as they can be tricky in photos with other people. Ideally the mother of the bride and mother of the groom would both be dressed in a similar colour palette or tone (without matching). 2.

FOR BRIDESMAIDS: First things first – friends and family all come in different shapes and sizes. A popular number for bridesmaids often sees them appearing in groups of three. Very, very rarely do all three bridesmaids come with the same body composition and height. Dressing in the same dress and colour creates a natural visual comparison which can easily be avoided. Ideas for this include arming your bridesmaids with the same fabric and an open (or tight) brief to have a dress made in their preferred style. Or seeing different dresses made in slightly varying tones within a similar palette.

3.

FOR WEDDING GUESTS: Before passing go, assess the dress code and location of the proposed wedding. If it is a wedding on grass, wedge heels for women are a must, or applying plastic heel stoppers to stilettos and kitten heels works wonders. For an outdoor summer wedding, a panama hat will lift his or her outfit, bringing instant chic and serving the wearer well after the event. As for the big question: Can you wear white? For women, yes – as long as it doesn’t look bridal in any way, shape or form. If in doubt, checking in with the bride will give you an immediate read on the status quo. For women it is also good to avoid big cleavage or skirts/dresses that are extremely short, as this may come off looking brassy on someone else’s special day. www.magpiestyle.co.nz

racey has found people are often lost about what to wear and where to go to find it. “It is our job to assist and educate customers about what goes together and what suits them,” she says. “It is really important people feel comfortable instore. Many are selfconscious, worried they’ll be judged by shop assistants if they’ve had bad experiences elsewhere in the past.” Once clients let their guards down, they see shopping can be fun and stepping outside your comfort zone can be dramatic in a positive way – changing your perception about what you can wear and what looks good on you.

“I had a customer who was a size 14-16 and had never worn jeans. I brought some to the changing room and instantly it was a ‘no’. I asked her to give the soft and stunning style a go. ‘They are so comfy’ she said. “It was her first pair of designer jeans and if she had not stepped outside her comfort zone, she would have not learnt how fabulous she looked in them.” Many customers leave the store with a completely different outlook on their body. “We are not sales people; we are passionate about dressing people and we dress anyone from size 6-16.” Visit www.taddesign.co.nz.

Its glorious fineries have graced the jewellery boxes of some of the most famous celebrities in the world – Lorde, Rihanna and Zoe Kravitz, to name just a few. Finding beauty in otherwise overlooked materials or concepts, Meadowlark’s collections boast luxurious precious metals and ethically sourced stones.

Meadowlark is an institution – where did your inspiration come from for the brand? It was really a combining of our skills, we are both driven to create from our souls and Meadowlark is the outcome. You have major names wearing your precious pieces – did you ever anticipate it would take off on in the way it has? Honestly we never had huge dreams for the brand when we first started; our biggest goal was to make enough money to be able to do jewellery full time and quit our other work. It still surprises us that it has come so far; we do have pretty big goals now. We are really proud of the major names who wear Meadowlark, they are all strong, intelligent inspiring women. What have been the greatest milestones along your journey? • Having a commercial space – we were working from our home for the first five years and with staff and a baby crammed in. • Employing amazing staff – we couldn’t do it without them, it’s pretty daunting being responsible for others but we are proud to provide jobs in New Zealand. • Getting into Colette – although they are now closed, it was a shock and an honour to be in such an iconic store and we had a huge sell through within the first week! What lies ahead in 2018? We are going into a well-known department store, as well as a major online store this coming March – these are goals we have had for many years and will be one of our greatest milestones.

Not all perfumes are created equal. When it comes to scents, or more specifically, their strength, there are some key terms to know and we’ve listed them in order of strength from weakest (and most affordable) to the strongest (and most expensive) – Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum and, finally, Perfume.

FRAGRANCE FAMILIES: Fragrances are classified according to predominant scent characteristics. There are four basic families which can capture most feminine fragrances, which helps narrow down the options. Floral/Sweet, Citrus/ Fruity/Fresh, Oriental/Spicy, and Woody/ Chypre.

CLEVER CHEMISTRY: If there was one commodity which requires a ‘try before you buy’ mandate, this is it. Because our body chemistry is unique to us, the same perfume can react differently on each person, making each scent smell different on different people.

PERFUME PERSONALITIES: Pick a perfume that suits your personality, after all, you want your scent to reflect who you are just like your clothing does. Try an online test or some retailers have a test to determine where to start.

It’s that time of year again; the time when an overpowering sense of ambition leads to many a midnight declaration. Although I’m sure many New Year’s Resolutions have given rise to celebration worthy changes, it seems just as many fall by the wayside, particularly when it comes to those of the culinary kind.

I was shocked at just how much sugar went into our everyday products.”

sweet addiction By Melinda Collins

Y

es, our diets feature prominently in our annual resolutions and, as much as the fads come and go, so too do our best intentions. Busy working mum, Amanda Tiffen is well versed in the addictive nature of fads. “I have struggled with weight since I was 17 years old,” the 43-year-old explains. “I was always looking for the latest ‘fix’. Nothing worked.” Heading up to her 40th birthday, she tipped the scales at 80.5kgs and had all but given up when she came across a documentary ‘Is sugar the new fat?’ in which Nigel Latta turns the camera on one of our favourite indulgences. “I was shocked at just how much sugar went into our everyday products and I suddenly thought, maybe that’s my problem. Many of the foods Nigel was highlighting were in my own cupboards.” Amanda had been unknowingly consuming 30 teaspoons of sugar every day eating what she thought was healthy food. In 2015, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reduced its sugar intake recommendations to less than five percent of total energy intake (formerly 10 percent). For the average adult, five percent of total energy equates to 23.5g of sugar, or six teaspoons. Amanda started documenting her sugar consumption and, from there, subtle changes in the products she chose meant the weight started coming off. Three years later, there is 20kg less of her and she has written ‘A Life Less Sugar – How I lost 20kg by reducing my sugar intake’ to educate others. Some of the most surprising lessons along the way were that a lot of the ‘low fat’ options on the market are in fact high in sugar, that some sweeteners can make you gain weight and she had to balance the amount of fruit she was eating. “It’s really important to read the back of the packaging, not the front,” she says. Although Amanda enlisted the help of talented cook and good friend Leigh Brown to create low sugar, low carbohydrate recipes which feature in the book, the key message is she is still eating what she was before, but reading labels and choosing products with less sugar – so you’ll find chocolate in her pantry, but these days it’s the 90 percent cocoa kind. She has since started a Facebook support group called A Life Less Sugar to help others. “It’s not a diet, but a lifestyle change. It’s the whole teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime scenario. This is a life tool you’ll have forever.” For more information visit www.alifelesssugar.co.nz or www.harpercollins.co.nz. Metropol January 18, 2018 35

Lynda has been creating sensational seasonings since 2004. Disillusioned with products on the market, she set about making

her own. Her seasonings are naturally gluten free with no preservatives or fillers like rice flour. All food is made in a purposebuilt kitchen, with a nifty food truck used for catering. Lynda simply loads the truck and goes wherever she is needed. In the summer months, Billies offers high tea days. A lovely way to get together with friends and family to relax in the onsite garden, the next high tea will be on February 11, 2018. A Menu Mentoring Programme helps clients create menus for four weeks – one week at a time – produce grocery lists and organise their pantries, with cooking classes also available. Billies even has a bed and breakfast within walking distance of the town centre and just a 15-minute drive to the beach. Guests have their own lounge and can enjoy the quiet, peaceful garden. lovers’

LANE By Tracey Edwardes

Cupid’s arrow has struck the enchanting township of Rangiora and, on Valentine’s Day, the romantic cobblestoned pavement of Conway Lane will become Lovers’ Lane for the evening.

O

rganiser Karl Horwarth has fond memories of the former night-time outdoor Valentine’s dance in Christchurch’s Victoria Square and thought his North Canterbury hometown offered the perfect setting to re-establish the moonlit soiree. From 6pm till late, Rangiora will be host to Lovers’ Lane – Valentine’s in Conway. Tickets for the February 14 affair will be $25 a head, which includes a first drink – perhaps bubbles, the lovers’ tipple – and a live band to swoon and slow dance to, while a violinist serenades. A special Valentine’s menu, champagne, chocolates and drinks will be available to purchase at Mediterranean Food Co and Café, and also at F.O.D Café (aka Fools of Desire), which Karl runs with his wife Elisa. Both are located at the carpark end of the laneway, and are where the limited tickets can be purchased prior to the event. “We will create a romantic space by filling the laneway up with candles, balloons, flowers and a dance floor – so why not dress up for the occasion and have a romantic night,” Karl says. “Conway Lane looks amazing lit up in the evenings and will be even more so on Valentine’s.” Lovers’ Lane will be adorned with a firefly display of fairy lighting – and umbrellas to canoodle under. Another exceptionally popular Conway Lane business - Fi’s Flowers ‘n’ Art - has got in behind the event, supplying beautiful floral arrangements for the night.

Fi has been in the industry for more than 10 years and, along with a team of highly experienced florists, has been involved with many community events, including the Ellerslie Flower Show Festival of Flowers for which she designed the floral chalice that is now used as their logo. The laneway is comparable to Christchurch’s New Regent Street. “It also reminds me of the old Chinese trader shops near Little India in Singapore, with its colourful boutique shop frontages. The developers did a fantastic job,” Karl adds. “The buildings are all solid concrete and of a unique construction style. They were mindful of keeping with the traditional architectural character of the town, with European sophistication in a style of yesteryear – and their plans for more development here are exciting.” Conway Lane, which has been open now for three years, is Rangiora’s new majestic slice of real estate, home to Ray White and other locally dedicated services and delightful owner-operated stores. “I love all the unique boutique businesses we have in Rangiora.” Karl has big plans for Rangiora’s renaissance as an event destination for the Canterbury region. “Lovers’ Lane in Conway is a ‘practice run’ for something similar to the worldwide All White Affair events like the one under the Eiffel Tower, where everyone dresses up in only white for a sophisticated evening.” He was the co-creator of the last two years’ Rangiora Winter Festivals which grew to fantastical proportions, including an ice-skating rink, drawing a crowd of 10,000 last July. Rangiora’s enthusiastic event manager is also in full swing co-ordinating this year’s Colour Festival on March 24, which will see revellers paint themselves and Rangiora all hues of the rainbow. But in the meantime, on Valentine’s night down at Lovers’ Lane, the shade on everyone’s lips will be red. Visit www.foolsofdesire.co.nz for more information. We have a double pass to give away to one very lucky couple. To be in the draw, head to metropol.co.nz/win, enter your details and tick the box ‘Lover’s Lane Festival’. Entries close January 29 and the winner will be notified on January 30.

RUN AWAY WITH ME By Kineta Booker

Found the partner of your dreams and you’d rather skip the big wedding but still want to get married? Elope!

I

t used to be that elopements were for, whatever reason, couples who needed to get married in a hurry. They would dash off on a flight somewhere, or off to the registry office, and get married secretly. However, today there are many reasons people decide to elope: their families live all over the world, are no longer around, or they are estranged; limited finances, logistics (eg. can only chopper five people to the top of a mountain), or privacy. I’ve officiated over many elopements, 40 January 18, 2018 Metropol

and it’s beautiful how romantic and unique they can be. Yes, you can get married in a registry office, but by choosing a celebrant (along with two witnesses) you can elope to anywhere in this fine country. What about on the shore of your favourite beach with the waves lapping at your feet? In a field with hundreds of lambs leaping among the daffodils? Or in the spa in your backyard? There are so many places to choose from. You can still wear the dress of your dreams, hold a bouquet of stunning

flowers and have a photographer capturing the moment, or you can choose none of these. Elopements are a great way to either embrace convention or do everything your own way. One of the things to be mindful of is elopement guilt. It’s something that some couples genuinely feel, because they’re not sharing it with all their loved ones, but no need to feel this way! Marriage is a personal commitment between two people and it’s your choice to elope, no one else’s.

Clare from Via Sollertia’s idea of heaven is to capture all the facets of the fortunate soul whose destiny it is to wear a piece of jewellery and cherish it into the future. Designer, and Co-Manager with Joel, Clare is thrilled about the rising popularity of coloured gemstones.

The team loves to work with clients who want to push boundaries, while a client struggling to choose between favourite ideas (a Pippa or a Meghan?), will see Clare amalgamate their desires into something utterly unique, delightful and bespoke. A current favourite took the in-house craftsman 16 hours to create. Enviable Entertaining By Melinda Collins

Hosting a sensational soiree is one of those few times in life when looks really do count. But you don’t need elaborate bone china or crystal glasses to earn your hostess with the mostess stripes. We’ve cooked up a list of tempting tips to put your best foot forward when it comes to entertaining this summer.

1. 2. 3.

CLEVER CLOTHS: Tablecloths can instantly elevate the look of your spread. You can’t go wrong with white linen tablecloth and matching napkins.

4.

PRETTY PLATING: Get creative with plate layouts. Try a charger plate – a slightly larger decorative plate that sits under the dinner plates, creating a layering affect with a cool contrast.

CELEBRATORY CENTREPIECES: All dinner parties call for a centrepiece. Link the centrepiece with the overall colour or theme of the spread. Candles and greenery are great alternatives that won’t blow budgets.

5. 6.

GREAT GARNISHES:

Presentation can transform a dish from simple to special. For starters and mains add a drizzle of olive oil or balsamic glaze, a sprinkling or sprig of fresh herbs, a grind of black pepper, a dash of crème fraiche or sour cream. For puddings add a dash or extra thick double cream, fresh seasonal fruits, a sprig of mint or use a sieve to sprinkle some icing sugar, cinnamon or cocoa.

SERVING SETS:

This year is all about the hardware – and serving spoons, platters and all manner of table adornments can be called on to provide the wow-factor when it comes to your summer serving sets.

SNAP HAPPY:

Sneak some Insta-worthy snaps. After all, if it didn’t happen on social media, did it really happen?

You’ve become an icon in the culinary field and attracted a cult following – what do you attribute this to? I never really think about that as I have a beautiful wife and a six-year-old daughter who keep me very grounded and humble. I have a passion and a determination to do the very best I can with anything food related. I want to make sure that all of my guests are being treated kindly, are eating delicious food and enjoying quality time with friends and family. Tell us about your most recent ventures We have recently taken over operations at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. It includes ilex Café and Duck Duck; the ice-cream parlour by the children’s playground. We also offer events and weddings within the spaces of the architecturally stunning Botanic Gardens Visitors’ Centre. It really is the most amazing natural space and we are all so lucky to have this as a key part of our central city. On top of this we are still running The CRU which offers truly unique wedding and event catering anywhere in the South Island.

the taste of success

When did your culinary aspirations take hold and what inspired them? I’ve always been hungry and loved to eat well and cook often since I was a child. I think this has driven my career choices more than anything. My hunger for knowledge and the joy of simple things done well has kept me enamoured with all things culinary since I began cooking professionally nearly 30 years ago.

Avocado

action

Once a humble single-seeded berry responsible for forming one half of an Eggocado and most beloved among guacamole aficionados, the avocado has more recently been held responsible for the housing affordability woes of millennials, with smashed avo on toast a fixture on the menus of the most hippest of culinary hotspots.

A

lthough its presence on toast or a chicken sandwich could almost be considered one of life’s inevitabilities, this culinary powerhouse may actually be a lot more versatile than you think. Packed with healthy fats and loads of nutrients, it’s a popular player in the breakfast game, but chances are you hadn’t thought to add it to the dessert menu. So we’ve pulled together some deliciously unique ways to incorporate this foodie favourite anytime of the day.

A RAW DEAL:

GREAT GRIDDLE:

GET STUFFED:

BAKED BEAUTY:

Why not whip up some avo and store it in the fridge to make endless puddings and treats that don’t require baking, such as an avo and lime cheesecake or even icecream.

When they refuse to ripen, get griddling! Why not give a sticky citrus chicken with griddled avo and beet salad a go?

Swap your pip with fabulous fillings for an easy snack or light lunch, such as sundried tomatoes, olives and spring onions.

Avocado makes an irresistibly soft chocolate cake and a luscious frosting when whipped up with icing sugar and cocoa powder, or try sweet potato, avocado and feta muffins.

a clever culinary

collaboration Christchurch comes to life in the summer months, as we seek every opportunity to experience all this beautiful city has to offer.

M

ontreal Street mainstay, The Villas, doesn’t disappoint, teaming up with Emersons Brewery to host a craft beer matched dinner – with a twist – on Friday January 26. The clever culinary collaboration has resulted in a menu that will draw out, enhance and contrast the unique flavours Richard Emerson and his team imbue their beers with. But the twist comes with a tasty new addition to the evening’s menu – a selection of decadent, artisan hand-crafted spirits from Wanaka’s Cardrona Distillery. Richard’s unique ‘Mini Bar’ will be parked up in the courtyard from 5pm on the day to serve a tasty tipple or two. But the pièce de résistance of the evening is the five amazing tasting courses, each course matched with a beer and spirit measure for $105 pp. Richard Emerson himself will be on hand before each course to wax lyrical about great food, tasty hand-crafted beer and artfully designed spirits. Contact The Villas now to book your table as spaces are filling up fast. Nestled comfortably on Montreal Street for more than 20 years, and under its current ownership for more than 10 of those, The Villas has found its commercial groove by offering the basics – exceptional eats and an inviting space. Owners Dave McLoughlin and Ben Dunkin took over in 2007. Already a popular day-time destination, the pair upped the café’s commercial game, with a focus on redefining and improving the dining experience for its guests and branching out into a full restaurant experience.

These days The Villas is known as much for its evening dining as it is for its delicious breakfast and lunch options. And it’s still a day time favourite for its fine coffee, home baked cakes and superb New Zealand cuisine. The historic buildings are filled with little nooks and crannies, intimate little dining areas which cater for different groups, including the bar area at the back of 290, known as “the nook”. The foods are an exciting fusion of locally sourced New Zealand cuisine and European influences, with a strong focus on preparing everything on site by hand. “ The menu features a good range of seasonally inspired dishes and platters, complemented by a wide selection of craft beers and wines. “Consistency is a key point for us,” Dave says.

CHOCOLATE MOUSSE

cuisine

homemade

It’s got to be one of the simplest desserts to make, yet oh so satisfying. With a few simple ingredients and a bit of time, you can make a rich but light chocolate mousse as a fitting end to a meal with friends or family.

I

f you’ve been making meringues, then you’ll definitely have a few egg yolks left over and you might be lucky and have a bar of chocolate still tucked away.

Ingredients: • 4 large egg yolks • 4 tablespoons sugar • 2 cups heavy cream • 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, melted • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

THESE DAYS THE VILLAS IS KNOWN AS MUCH FOR ITS EVENING DINING AS IT IS FOR ITS DELICIOUS BREAKFAST & LUNCH OPTIONS

1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together egg yolks, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 3/4 cup heavy cream. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring, until mixture coats back of spoon, 3-4 minutes (do not boil). Remove from heat; whisk in melted chocolate and vanilla. Strain into a bowl; chill until cool. 2. With an electric mixer,

beat remaining 1 1/4 cups heavy cream with remaining 2 tablespoons sugar until stiff peaks form. Stir 1/3 of whipped cream into cooled custard mixture, then gently fold in the rest with a rubber spatula. 3. Spoon into serving dishes; chill covered, at least 30 minutes and up to 3 days. Bring to room temperature before serving.

5CRAFTCOURSE BEER DINNER “While some places like to jump on the bandwagon with the latest fads and an ever-changing menu, we have found a lot of people really appreciate consistency and, at The Villas, they know they can come back and have the same quality dish as last time, with the same exceptional service and cosy environment.” To book in for the craft beer matched dinner, contact The Villas now on 03-365 6066, as spaces are filling up fast.

“W

e are more than your average catering company,” says owner Chantelle Quinn, who came ninth in the third season of MasterChef New Zealand. “We meet with our clients and create a menu perfectly tailored to their event and unique preferences, or if they have a favourite dish that their grandmother used to make, we can recreate it for them. We don’t just turn up and serve food, we ensure all bases are covered and every event runs smoothly.” Starting a catering company was a natural progression for Chantelle, who was running a successful boutique restaurant in Ashburton when she was asked to cater for a wedding four years ago. This led to more weddings and her services became

so sought-after she chose to close the restaurant to focus purely on catering. The company quickly built a loyal following of return clients. “I feel really blessed that people ask us to cater for events that are so special to them.” Using the freshest and best local produce, the company specialises in classic New Zealand fare. “It’s about sourcing good products and not mucking around with the flavour. We can also provide for canape functions and turn those flavours into beautiful bite-size morsels. And because we make everything from scratch, we can easily cater for people with special dietary requirements.” For more information, visit www.twentyfourcatering.co.nz.

literal and figurative crossroads between the east and west, north and south, results in a unique and inspirational style quite specific to this mountainous Mecca at the far end of the Maghreb. In décor, the rich cultural influence of Morocco lends itself to vibrant colours, elaborate wrought iron scroll work, mother of pearl inlay, ornately carved wood, richly hued upholstery, and intricate mosaic or terra cotta tile details. COLOUR ME CREATIVE: Colour is a powerful design element when used effectively. Use bold colours to create some Moroccan magic. Shades of blue and green link back to the Atlantic and Mediterranean, shimmering gold and silver invoke the Sahara sands, while rich reds and oranges conjure up African sunsets.

LUXURIOUSLY LUSH: Fabrics in rich colours with intricate textures and designs typify Moroccan décor. Add throw pillows and cushions in abundance and drape luxurious fabrics from furniture, window frames and even the ceiling. Tie loose draped fabric back with heavy cords in high traffic areas to keep them out of the way and for extra space and added style.

3.

TEXTURAL TALENT: Opposites have always been said to attract, and it’s certainly true when it comes to furnishings. Textural elements such as natural fibres may be just what your home is missing.

PRINTED PATTERNS:

4.

Like its colours, Moroccan décor is about being bold and brave. So take this as an opportunity to step out of your neutral comfort zone and get clever with patterns.

RUGGED UP: Rugs and carpets are a great option for incorporating a mix of Morocco, offering an ephemeral aesthetic for those who like to change it up seasonally.

CLEVER CLAYS: Beautiful and bold in colour as in pattern, ceramics and pottery are an easy way to get ethnic influence in the home.

GLORIOUS By Kate Pierson

It’s become a hero-worshipped celebrity on the recreational and social scenes. It’s the ‘go to’ for the freespirited types that like their adventure with a generous serving of luxury. Its mandate is to offer convenience – never having to sacrifice creature comforts.

I

f the portmanteau ‘glamping’ – aka ‘glamorous camping’ – sprung to mind when reading the above preamble, then you’re spot on. Once directly synonymous with festivals like

Glastonbury and Coachella and those of similar ilk, glamping is now ubiquitous and this modern marvel is even willing to make its way into your backyard this summer.

If you can’t get to the holiday, then bring the holiday to you! Better yet, if you have champagne tastes on a beer budget, then this could be your economic ticket to the trip of your dreams, all just a stone’s throw away from home. The must-haves are a no brainer – a great tent (or teepee!) inflatable bed, super soft pillows and bedding (Egyptian Cotton sheets wouldn’t go astray), fairylights, candles, S’More ingredients, a bluetooth compatible speaker, and comfortable furniture for you to kick back. We’d also add to the list: bunting, a footspa, an inflatable pool if you don’t have a real one at home, an outdoor movie screen, eyemask and earplugs, stylish but practical casualwear, and colourful crockery. The list may seem excessive, but trust us, we’re being conservative here! If you really want to kick things up a notch, get your hands on a heated blanket, an outdoor fridge, and a bottle of Cristal and some oysters.

raditionally a bit of a fencesitter when it comes to taking sides in the style stakes, this clever colour chameleon is taking front and centre stage, upstaging its neutral cousins, taupe, beige and ivory. Now the new ‘It’ colour, grey is hitting all the right design notes, with the new must-have straddling the divide between contemporary edge and timeless classic. Representing peace and balance in the colour psychology books, grey is calm and safe, practical and simple, and yet so very stylish. This here-to-stay aesthetic is making interior moves in all the right ways, after all, even Christian Dior once said, “the tones of gray, pale turquoise and pink will prevail”.

keeping your home

ON-TREND By Kineta Booker

Redecorating your entire home each season to keep up with the latest trends isn’t exactly practical however, there are ways to keep it looking fresh with trendy accents.

CAPRA DESIGNS Photo: Eve Wilson

B

ringing greenery into the home is going to be big in 2018. Plants are a great way to freshen up your home, while adding colour with either the choice of plant or the pot. Choose a large plant for your front door and smaller ones for throughout the house: the kitchen, bathroom and side table. If greenery isn’t your thing, flowers could be more to your taste. Vases are a good way to change with the season, as are the flowers you put in them. There are some incredibly real-looking silk flowers that bring seasonal class to your home. Fresh flowers are always a welcome scent, as are scented candles to complement the season. Cushions and throws in the latest colours and patterns are the easiest ways to give

02 Design Furniture

your home an instant boost. All you need are new cushion covers, as the inners from last season will do just fine, and you’ll give your lounge and living rooms a real lift. The kitchen is also an easy room in the house to update each year. Fresh and trendy teatowels that hang over the oven door handle, coffee canisters, placemats or fruit bowls. They’re small items, so easy to update. Instead of painting or changing your feature walls each year to stay on-trend, updating your prints and frames is an affordable way to keep them looking fresh. Even if the print is just a sample of the latest colours or shapes in a frame, it will bring contemporary fun into your home, and really make your walls pop. Another way to bring seasonal vibrancy

to your lounge is with your choice of lamps. This can simply be the choice of lampshade, or you can update the whole lamp. The shade is the obvious choice but if you can talk yourself into a new lamp, just remember it’s always more affordable than a whole new revamped living area. As long as your bathroom has a good foundation, changing it for the seasons is easy. Hand and bathroom towels, along with the bathmats are the most obvious things to update, but you can also add a funky new potplant into the room. Updating the hand soap is also another good idea. There are always new and current scents to try. Even if you just choose a couple of these ideas each season, you’ll be keeping your home fresh and on trend. Metropol January 18, 2018 61

GOING

’ e l a r u t a n u ‘a By Melinda Collins

A growing awareness of the earth’s dwindling resources has seen sustainability become a hot design element in the home.

A

lthough timber has long been regarded as an easy and effective way to add a natural dimension

of warmth and feeling to our internal spaces, it’s not just our big-ticket items that are going au naturale.

Eco-friendly plant-derived textiles, originally developed to produce rope and twine, have evolved into glamorous green alternatives to synthetic rugs and are long lasting and versatile, while offering a look that is simple but sophisticated. Sisals, as well as its close relatives of sea grass and jute are featuring strongly in the home as natural-fibre rugs. It’s not just our floor coverings that are getting the natural makeover as cotton, hemp, linen and wool are increasingly tasked with enhancing our cushions, drapes and upholstery. Their chunky, robust fibres are becoming increasingly hard to distinguish from the fabrics traditionally relegated to the outdoors, while their durability makes them perfect for high-traffic dining room and living room furniture. These natural fibres are also playing a starring role in our homewares, from storage baskets and placemats to coasters and lamp shades. Natural fibres are good for you and good for the environment. A sustainable resource, they are renewable, biodegradable, carbon neutral and they can be used without depleting or damaging the environment.

from Lynette McFadden

Harcourts gold Businesss Owner and Inspirational Women’s Ambassador

So, this year I want to:

Happy New Year, Happy 2018 and here’s to a year of possibilities.

Stretch more and stress less!! Listen with intent; something I think I do but I’m told I could improve on (I’m sure my colleagues will be happy with this)!

I think every year brings its own set of highlights, challenges, perfect moments and hard-to-forget blunders, and I personally always look forward to the sense of promise a new year brings. After a long time doing the opposite, I now try to let go of the previous year’s angsts and focus really hard on what can help me grow personally. I also work on helping our company continue to innovate and I endeavor to bring joy into the lives of the people I love. A clear head, a quiet space and a fresh new journal help the process, as does the much-needed Christmas break that precedes it. Every single plan I have ever undertaken has always had several common elements: a great intention, a timeframe of sorts and – the best thing of all – a purpose.

2018

I also write everything down. I don’t think of it as a set of New Year’s resolutions, more a personal path to living a great life and making a difference.

WHAT’S ON YOUR

Add value to our business and the lives of the people that work within it, and continue to celebrate family. With no-one at school anymore, I’m noticing that the house and the year has a different rhythm and there’s a lot of physical and mental space to ponder. It’s easy to think that if you keep doing things the same way, you will get the same results, however that doesn’t necessarily follow. The school of personal and professional development encourages all of us to try to be better. If I add a market context to this, then I’d want to provide greater customer service ‘touch points’ for our clients, continue to have the most incredibly well-trained and professional team, and keep abreast of the potential changes this new government coalition could instigate. I’m looking forward to a kinder environment for first-home owners and an easier one for investors (many of whom have struggled with very high deposit requirements). All of that done, I want to finally start learning Te Reo, hunt out a Bruce Springsteen concert somewhere in the world, and enjoy the company of my beloved family and friends. Can I wish you the same? Happy 2018!

abstract art DECOR MUST-HAVE:

By Kate Pierson

Since abstract art burst onto the creative scene thanks to the romanticism, impressionism and expressionism movements, brought to life by greats such as Henri Matisse and Andy Warhol, it has revelled in its role as a non-conformist.

ts eclectic nature and the devotion demonstrated by its cult following, generation after generation, is perhaps best explained by American-Armenian painter Arshile Gorky who said: “Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot physically see with his eyes… abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible…” In short, abstract art inspires our imagination and redefines the innovation boundaries. And the outcome of this exploration into unknown areas? Visual delights that are destined for our walls.

Metallic has been having ‘its moment’ for the longest time now – so much so that one could surmise its prevailing popularity means it’s here to stay. We’re rejoicing in that prospect, particularly when it comes to our affections for metallic fixtures in the home.

L

ong gone are the days when the fixtures in our houses – taps, handles, pipes, shower heads – lacked personality. Not only are we seeing a renaissance of copper, but also bold golds, striking silvers and charming brass hues are creating clean, modern and vibrant environments within our homes – even in the less sexy spaces like our bathrooms and restrooms. Pegged as ‘the next big thing’ back in 2016, metallic fixtures are still enjoying a front and centre stage role in renovations and aesthetic pick-me-ups in our abodes. And given their timeless appeal, their presence will no doubt continue to endure.

It’s that time of year when we vow to lose weight, save our pennies and factor more ‘down time’ into our busy lives. But what about setting some goals for our homes?

In the spirit of new beginnings, we have put together a 2018 to-do list of areas the professionals can help to ensure you have a great 2018.

ALL THE SMALL THINGS: A lot of small jobs inevitably build up over the course of a year. Together, they can add up to a bit of day to day annoyance. When there are many, it’s even more worthwhile to engage a professional.

EXPEND THE EXPENDABLE: Why not put that weekly double cream affogato towards your mortgage. Just a small extra payment can make a significant impact. Speak to your broker or bank about other options, such as an offset mortgage.

REVIEW AND RENEW: A lot of our expenses are some of life’s inevitabilities. Yet, in a competitive marketplace, there are often savings to be made. Shop around and compare rates, bundle insurances together for a discounted rate or contact current providers and push for a better deal.

HEATING THINGS UP: Summer is a great time to get your heat pumps serviced ready for when the temperatures start to drop. Chances are there might be some specials going too.

LOVELY LANDSCAPES: Why not look into dressing your section in its Sunday best. Engage a quality landscaping company to get the gardens looking tip top and you may find there’s less maintenance and upkeep when things are done right the first time.

FOREWORD

Editor: Melinda Collins

W

elcome to our first issue of Canterbury Build for 2018. We’re not short of interesting content when it comes to profiling the region’s rapid resurrection and, as we enter a new year, there’s a lot to look forward to. The text books from high school physics class define momentum as the strength or force that allows something to grow stronger or faster as time passes. A speed determined by the relative mass and motion of the object, momentum – by its very nature – loses pace as time passes. Despite a timeframe of more than seven years since the February 22 earthquake which changed the face of the region and provided a seismic precursor to the 6.3 quake in February 2011, it seems the rebuild has maintained the momentum to continue pushing forward. While we run the risk of cliché, what’s the point of forward momentum if it’s not observed? This issue we talk to one such observer, photographer Dennis Radermacher, about his observations of the city which he has, quite literally, seen rebuild from the ground up. We’ve also taken the opportunity to talk to the new head of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, Leeann Watson, about what the New Year has in store for the Christchurch business community. And we’ve been lucky enough to speak with Sam Johnson who has taken the post-quake Student Volunteer Army concept and put it to a home based support system. So, read on to find out about some of the exciting developments the New Year has in store for Christchurch. Enjoy.

s the year draws to a close, it’s a great time to reflect on what we’ve achieved in 2017 across our city and, on our rebuild. Christchurch has turned a corner – the much awaited Christchurch Convention Centre build is now underway, the Justice Precinct has been completed, The Crossing retail development is up and running and the eagerly anticipated carpark buildings for the central city are open – all strong signals we are moving forward as a city. We need to focus on the great opportunities ahead, and celebrate what we’ve achieved so far and the great things that Christchurch has to offer. We cannot continue to beat ourselves up about what we haven’t done yet. This doesn’t mean relaxing the pace, or not continuing to hold to account those responsible for delivering the rebuild. It means we learn the lessons from those things we didn’t get quite right, and move forward as quickly as possible. Repositioning our city is a key priority – we are already seeing Christchurch recognised as a city of choice and opportunity, attracting great talent and new business. They recognise what’s on offer – a new, modern, energy efficient, safe city, a collaborative and supportive business environment, world class health systems, some of the best education offerings in New Zealand, a world class international airport, no traffic congestion and you can get to the mountains or the sea within hours. All this contributes to a lifestyle that is second to none. It’s easy to become complacent – but talk to someone who has recently chosen to move to Christchurch; you’ll be quickly reminded of just what a great city we live in.

t is not often you get the opportunity to build a brand new park in the centre of an existing city, let alone one in the Garden City. That is why Rauora Park in the East Frame has been such a special project for the people of Otakaro . It runs through the middle of five city blocks between Manchester and Madras Streets, has 9000m2 of grassed area, with 14,000 plants and over 300 trees. It took just over a year to complete and is a good place to explore if you want to see progress in Christchurch. This area is transforming. Rauora Park is a ‘backyard’ for everyone in the central city, and there’s plenty to do, such as riding scooters or bicycles on the ample paved areas, playing basketball or table tennis, or simply lying back on the grass and watching the clouds passing overhead. It is a great place to eat your lunch, have a picnic or bring in some takeaways from the nearby eateries. It’s also a nice pedestrian alternative between the Innovation Precinct and the Margaret Mahy Family Playground. Ultimately Rauora Park will help create a sense of community as people move into new homes that will be built on both sides. You may have noticed the frames of the first 20 homes, opposite Latimer Square, are now in place. Work is underway on the next 94 apartments and townhouses on the corner of Madras and Lichfield Streets, and design work for a further 56 homes is complete at the corner of Madras and Hereford Streets. The East Frame is a bold concept. I encourage you to come to the family-friendly opening event for Rauora Park on 28 January and get a sense of the opportunity this area presents for Christchurch.

T

he traditional model for registered architect services is based on a staged design and documentation process that involves pre-design services, concept design, preliminary design, developed design, construction documentation, planning and building consents, and construction administration and observation services. This process allows optimum time for client consultation, exploration of design options, testing of the project budget, and robust design and documentation checking procedures at each stage. It provides the best client value, reduced design, construction and cost risks, and the best architectural outcomes. New buildings are typically much more sophisticated and complex in terms of both design and compliance. There are thousands of different materials, products and systems to choose from. Architects must be very knowledgeable and draw on a huge resource of technical information. The involvement of the architect in the administration and observation of the construction works is critical given this is where 85 percent of the project cost occurs. In addition to ensuring quality workmanship and managing the project costs, the architect ensures the project is constructed as designed, documented and consented. Low fees, fast-tracked design timeframes, partial architectural services with limited or no architectural involvement or observation during construction, and the engagement of dubious design managers with no professional qualifications or design training, are common factors associated with poorly designed and built outcomes. The New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) website has a paper titled 10 Myths about Architects which I encourage anybody contemplating a project to read at nzia.co.nz.

t’s been a busy year for Regenerate Christchurch as we develop plans to transform Christchurch into a vibrant city and attract investment. ‘What’s the greatest contribution the Otakaro Avon River Corridor Regeneration Area can make to Christchurch and New Zealand’s future?’ More than 5000 ideas have informed our vision and objectives for the 602-hectare area – including the former residential red zone – from Barbadoes Street to Bexley. We explored a range of uses for this area and undertook feasibility and technical studies that we then published, along with 10 possible combinations of land uses for feedback in October. We received more than 1800 responses to this information and will hold a public exhibition of shortlisted options early in 2018. In August, we published concepts to revitalise Cathedral Square and its surrounds. Responses were positive, with most people liking the idea of an eventready, greener Square. This feedback, along with the research we’ve already done, is helping us refine the design and complete the strategy. We’re also working with the Ministry of Education, City Council and partners to fasttrack the relocation of Redcliffs School. As eventful as 2017 has been, 2018 promises to be even more so. We’ll work to complete a draft regeneration plan for the Otakaro Avon River Corridor, finalise the Cathedral Square and surrounds regeneration strategy, and undertake planning in Southshore and South New Brighton to adapt to sea-level rise and regenerate the area’s former residential red zone.

A

s we head in to 2018, I’m determined that this be the year we add a big dose of energy and momentum to the Canterbury rebuild. We’ve made great progress since the earthquake and we have a lot to be proud of as a city. But I know there’s more to be done, especially in our central city. For the Government, we wanted to end 2017 by sending a clear message that everything possible was being done to break through roadblocks and get things moving. That’s why I was so pleased we were able to end the year by pushing through urgent legislation to fast track the restoration of the Christ Church Cathedral. For the last seven years the damaged Cathedral has represented the broken heart of our city, and the frustration and delays we have all experienced. I’m thrilled this legislation will allow us to get on with the work of getting this local landmark reinstated and back open to the public. The Cathedral is not only a major tourist destination, it’s a vital part of our cityscape. The layout of our inner city was literally designed around it. Getting it reinstated will send the strong message to businesses, developers and residents that our central city is humming and is a great place to work, live and play. This legislation will enable fast tracked resource management and consenting. It will also support the creation of a Reinstatement Trust, providing governance and overseeing fund raising, and a joint venture project management company to oversee the reinstatement process. With these teams in place, we will be on track to see the heart of our city open once again.

I

n 2018, the CBD retail development and construction focus will sit squarely on the south west block of Cashel Mall in the area stretching from the riverside through to Ballantynes. The vast majority of it will be completed and open for trade by Christmas. This part of the precinct will house Richard Peebles’ farmers market and the exciting new Guthrey Centre adjacent to Ballantynes, along with several other privately-owned developments. Work is now underway and they’ll only be further enhanced by the opening of The Terrace. Most of its 15 hospitality operators moving into the much-anticipated riverfront development will be open in February or March. Fat Eddie’s, in the adjacent building, is showing what a focal point this riverside hospitality precinct will be. We’re already seeing the rise and rise of CBD retail as many brands returned to the inner city and other newcomers to Christchurch opened their doors. Movers during the latter part of last year included the much-heralded H&M and all the other stores in The Crossing, together with Plume, WORLD, AS Colour, Boardertown and North Beach. A key to attracting the growing numbers of shoppers back into town is the increasing ease of carparking, which will only get better once the CBD roadworks are finally complete. The opening of the Lichfield Street Car Park, with an hour of free parking, was a turning point for the city in helping drive shoppers back to town. This has been realised by a strong Christmas trade into the New Year. A welcome and exciting sign of things to come.

What are some of the main challenges facing Christchurch? We need to focus on the great things Christchurch has and share that story. It’s easy to talk about what still has to be done in our city, but we need to tell people about our new identity

and the great things we have. We need to also ensure we keep up the momentum on our anchor projects, like the Convention Centre, that will change the dynamics of the city and attract visitors, who will in turn spend more time and money in our city. As international visitors return, let’s give them reasons to stay in Christchurch, and grow from being a gateway to the South Island to being a dynamic and vibrant city providing a great experience. We need to take a long-term view on the red-zone and make sure we maximise the unique opportunity we have to create an enduring legacy, while balancing the wider needs of the community. We need to be bold, think creatively and show strong leadership to embrace the new city and a new direction. What do you love about Christchurch? region, Christchurch is undoubtedly New Zealand’s best place to live. Every year The Chamber runs the Champion Canterbury Business Awards and I am consistently amazed at the level of innovation, dynamism and creativity our province produces. Christchurch has a proud tradition of products and businesses that deliver on the world stage, like Tait Electronics and CWF Hamilton. Our businesses embrace innovation, new business models and new ways of working. We are attracting new businesses who consider our city as a test bed for innovation and experimentation. On top of that, where else can you enjoy little or no traffic congestion, be at the mountains or the sea in no time and enjoy some of New Zealand’s best education offerings? I’m proud to live in Christchurch and to lead the Chamber in such a dynamic, exciting province. I’ll be making sure we deliver the best support we can to ensure Canterbury continues to be the best place in New Zealand to live, work and play.

How are you enjoying the challenges of this new role and what are you looking forward to? There are huge opportunities ahead for the Chamber and I am looking forward to moving the organisation to the next level. Over the next few years you’ll see changes in what we do and how we deliver services to members. We have a new Government which has quickly moved from politics to policy, changing leadership across our city, and emerging global mega trends in technology, sustainability and the future of work, that will all impact business here. Our organisation is also impacted by the change and will have to adapt and evolve, while at the same time supporting our members.

right around the world working on our mission. It still brought me back home though. The magic we have here is something very unique. I’m still heavily involved in the international volunteering sector which is a personal passion. Another would be spending time in Saudi Arabia and stopping in for lunch at Buckingham Palace.

How does a day in the life of Sam Johnson look these days? I spend a huge amount of time working with DHBs, older persons’ groups and community organisations about our platform. We’ve created the largest home care support platform in the country with 10,000+ people engaged and are working hard to create more jobs. It’s a mix of AirBnb or Uber for home based support. Whether you need a cook, cleaner, gardener for mum or dad (or yourself!) you can find, book and pay for workers on Mycare. We’re all about creating meaningful, part-time, flexible work for good people. We’re creating the future of work; a way for people to get the support we all want and giving them control. I love life at the moment as I get to do what I’ve been wanting to do since the earthquakes; connect real people to support each other – without needing a natural disaster!

How do you feel the Christchurch rebuild is going? My partner and I recently bought a house in Linwood. It is very close to the central city and a great place to live. I am very optimistic about the city and believe our collective hard work will pay off.

What are some of the stand-outs in your life post-Student Army? I’ve met extraordinary people and spent time

NBUILDERS AND T IOCONSTRUCTION N E T T A COMPANIES

What are some of the key challenges facing the city and how should we look at addressing these? Roger Sutton used to talk about a 10 percent rule where you build mini versions of the anchor projects for 10 percent of the proposed budget, like we did with the stadium and cardboard cathedral. We need more of this thinking that builds cultures of connection, inclusion and innovation for a price we can afford. The previous government totally missed the boat on a number of excellent initiatives which really looked to the future and experimented. We need to speed things up, stop putting in too many traffic lights and controlling everything. Trust people to get on with it and get agencies out of the road.

focus During the past eight years, photographer Dennis Radermacher has had a unique opportunity to see the city rebuild from the ground up – both in the literal and figurative sense – as he captures some of Christchurch’s most extraordinary architectural endeavours. We talk to the man behind the camera about the city’s rebirth. How much of a unique experience has it been getting to, quite literally, see the city rebuild from the ground, up? I moved to Christchurch just in time for the

September 2010 earthquake. By February we had lost most of the heritage buildings that had made Christchurch so appealing as a new home. At that time, I lived in the

CBD with a curfew in place and a tank with soldiers parked around the corner. A unique experience, for sure. It was a bumpy start to building a new life

What are some of your favourite Christchurch buildings – both new and old? I love the way the light refracts in the Deloitte buildings’ façade on a winter afternoon. It is the closest thing the CBD has to an iceberg. The restored Mayflower building, which has been reconstructed off a single old photograph, has a few stories to tell as well. And then there is the Arts Centre in all its Victorian glory. I’m so glad it survived. If you have the time, visit the atrium of ANZ Centre. in many ways. Friends were leaving for greener pastures, and the cultural aspect of city life was all but gone. But then the first projects like Gapfiller started up, and Christchurch turned from disaster movie to blank canvas. These days, every visit to the CBD is like a little adventure. Temporary art installations move around, new architecture blends in with Christchurch’s heritage, and the city’s heart is beating once more.

Have there been some stand out photography jobs you’ve been on in the greater Christchurch district? It is hard not feeling personally attached to some community projects. Local communities fought for years to have their local meeting spaces rebuilt. Take Redcliffs, where Young Architects designed a modestly sized library from simple materials. It is a contemporary design that still fits perfectly into its charming neighbourhood. I love the space so much that my efforts to shoot the project bordered on bullying. Drive on towards Sumner and you find yourself in front of the Surf Life Saving Club. The building is in perfect harmony with its environment. Its curved roofs, colours and materials make it all but disappear between dunes and the sea. I would love to point out these gems when I read about concrete brutalism in the papers. Christchurch must be one of the most exciting small cities in the world right now. Visit www.lightforge.co.nz and www.heroworkshops.com

PERFECT BALANCE By Tracey Edwardes

Perfect balance was the challenge for architectural designer Jason Higham when renovating his partner’s childhood home. “It needed to be spacious, light, warm and practical, reusing materials to keep the emotional link to its history.”

T

he resourceful labour of love became the national winner of the ADNZ Architectural Design Awards for Alterations and Additions, and also TIDA Designer Renovation of the Year. The 119sqm 1950’s home is unassuming from the outside however, once inside, it’s breathtaking. “We stripped everything back to the framing. The study and third bedroom stole much of the sunlight, so that space was opened up to become part of the kitchen/dining/living area. We denailed the original timber, which was then

milled to profiles by local builder Grant Shadbolt.” This resulted in a stunning kitchen wall and ceiling feature in a mix of widths and grains. An olde-world timber floor by Hardie and Thomson continues to the carpeted lounge, while white-washed plywood lines the kitchen cabinetry. “Through glass doors, the study/spare bedroom incorporated the old porch. We rehomed its galvanised steel roof as our kitchen splashback.” Jason’s partner, Natural Health

Practitioner Natalie Price, insisted on environmentally healthy components, including recycled-wool carpet underlay, natural paints and untreated plywood cabinetry. And there was three-year-old daughter Cedar to consider too, so it was double basins in the only bathroom, with a custom-made shower folding away to extend precious floor space. Jason says people can’t believe the new roominess of the upcycled home, considering its small footprint. Visit www.highamarchitecture.co.nz.

The bar’s framing was hand-forged in wrought iron for the row of liquor, including tipple to spike an elegant tiramisu. DNG Construction’s Dean Inglis and Geoff Cox pooled their decades of experience to execute the central city fit-out. “We started with an empty shell and were able to adapt the design along the way, repurposing materials and fittings from the theatre’s repair,” Dean says. They secured resource consent for the wood-fired oven, engineered an efficient kitchen ducting system and dealt with the complexities of a mezzanine staff room. NewUrban Group was thrilled with the work of Sheppard & Rout. “We wanted the architecture of this project front and centre and we believe that Sheppard & Rout are the best available – they have great works of legacy all over the city. David’s input in this project was crucial to its success and it is a project we are very proud of,” Parker continues. Lintrathen Gardens is a refined example of modernist architecture. Right on the periphery of the central city, it is close to the redeveloped Victoria Street precinct and Merivale village. Comprising two standalone residences and eight spacious townhouses, the homes are scattered amongst a number of notable protected trees. This tranquil setting with lush surrounds offers all the homes access to the stream, yet privacy enough that it feels like a retreat from the regular pace of life. Each dwelling has three double bedrooms, with ensuite bathrooms in two, and an open plan living area. “These homes have the feeling of size without being necessarily large in actual size, which seems to be what the market demands more and more

these days,” Sheppard and Rout’s David Sheppard says. “Years ago when I was training as an architect, one of my favourite tutors said to me ‘with anything you design, you should really enjoy living in it yourself’ and that has been my dictum. That approach remains with me. I am very pleased we have managed to produce a development on this site where every unit is well designed with a pleasant outdoor space. “There is a serenity in this complex, a quality of indoor and outdoor space. When it comes to design, simplicity is key; we don’t respond to fads or fashions – we think of lasting quality, which drives from simplicity and creating quality of space,” Sheppard continues. The striking horizontal lines of the louvres and floating concrete steps up to the decks are eye catching, yet timeless. The views from the large windows take you miles away, just existing here feels like a holiday. The view from the window next to the stunning, sleek bath (which is surrounded by marble tiles) – the same. This has been a project of excellence for all involved. The end result is a paradise, created on a rare site, with a stunning vision residents will enjoy and benefit from forever.

he company manages multiple builds at a time by applying similar principals as the group housing companies do, but with emphasis on detail and quality. Cambuild engages numerous subcontractors and suppliers specifically suited to the projects at hand. Carl, along with construction administrator Lindy, can manage the entire building process, from design through to turn key, ensuring deadlines and high standards are met along the way. A current project is three executive homes at the very historic 1 Wood Lane property in Fendalton. The development consists of two five bedroom, five bathroom homes, just less than 400sqm and the third offering five bedrooms, five bathrooms within a 512sqm home.

Designed by Craig South of Cymon Allfrey Architects, these stunning homes surround a very large protected copper beech tree that sits on the banks of the Avon River. “We cordoned off the root base; the entire drip line of the tree,” Carl says. Another current Cambuild project is a beautiful 320sqm French farm house in Prebbleton, designed by another local architect – AO Architecture. The large portfolio of clients Carl has across Australia and New Zealand rave of his eye for detail, his design flair and finishing to the highest standard. “He genuinely enjoys building homes, our finished product surpassed our expectations,” reports one. ooking out across Christchurch from the mountainous border which frames the northeast flank of the city and separates it from its harbourside neighbours, the Mt Pleasant masterpiece has been recognised as one of the country’s best homes, with John Creighton Builders winning the overall New Zealand 2017 Registered Master Builders’ Supreme House of the Year for the build. The coveted title follows the local firm’s Gold Award and Category Win for the New Home over $2 million award, the Craftsmanship Award, the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award and the Heart of the Home Kitchen Award for the same home – 10 awards in total, local and national.

faces with no eaves,” explains Chris Dewar, the architectural designer of the home. “To maximise the view, the entire northern aspect of this house is glass and there are no curtains.” A striking minimalist aesthetic, the design is all about subtlety, longevity and low maintenance. The walls are predominately fair-faced inside and out, insulated concrete panels, while oak flooring provides a foil against the stark concrete. The owners’ teenage children have been catered for with a separate sound-proofed wing, and hidden doors throughout enable spaces to be closed off as and when needed. Not a fan of space for the sake of space, Chris says there is plenty of storage, but hidden within to maintain the clean minimalist look. “Even though it’s a simple house, there’s a lot of thought that has gone into it,” Chris says. “But first and foremost, it’s about function and liveability.” Chris has worked with many builders over the years, but says the team at John Creighton Builders were exceptional, especially site foreman Chris Matthews. Davinia Sutton also turned her awardwinning hand to the detailing for the kitchen, laundry and bathroom design. “This really came together through a team effort and we had an exceptional team.”

ne answer you probably wouldn’t expect is real estate agent, but that was the choice of the 10-year-old Andre Bezar. That dedication and passion for real estate is still evident and today Andre is a Marlborough-based agent with Bayley’s Real Estate. He loves the variety and has an innate passion for property. “No day is the same; meeting new people is a great pleasure.” Clients find Andre a pleasure to work with, with observations about his patience, sense of humour

Andre is thrilled to bring 14 Corsair Crescent in the Omaka Landing development to the market. HAPPY NEW YEAR

from the Team at Whyte Construction AS IS WHERE IS TO FULLY RESTORED When the current owners purchased their Fendalton property it was significantly damaged. They said that most people would have pushed it over and started again. But one of the owners had fond memories of living in the home as a child. This drove their resolve to repair, strengthen and update the home. They knew they needed a good engineer and a builder with experience in major residential earthquake repairs and that special skill set required when restoring Character homes. “We contacted Simco Engineering for advice on the engineering requirements and he suggested Whyte Construction. We had seen Whyte Construction working on a number of Character homes around the city and after meeting with them, they quickly provided a fully costed repair strategy. Our project was managed by Whyte’s in a very professional manner. It was important to us to have the project completed on time and within budget. Whyte’s managed to achieve both. The regular communication around progress to completion and monthly updates on costing, meant a potentially stressful project went smoothly. We are very happy with the quality of workmanship and the standard of the finish” comments the owners. Retaining the curved covered entrance, stained glass windows and intricate panelling on the stairs, while exposing some of the steel work has been an architectural masterstroke. The extensive strengthening throughout the house adds a new character. And the seamless blending of old style charm with new, including the modern home features, suits the owners. The addition of a stone plaque on the side of the house, is a wonderful reminder that they too are creating a legacy for their family, just like the families who have gone before. The end result is a safe warm comfortable family home, just what the owners were after.
