ith Canterbury Fashion Week next week, and our latest cover a Kate fashionable nod to what Pierson we can expect from this year's show, I've been thinking quite a lot about the subject. Generating billions of dollars per annum in New Zealand, fashion is the untameable beast at the heart of consumer culture. The chameleon like nature of the industry keeps loyalists to 'what's hot and what's not' on their toes, and leaves the rest of us who consider ourselves a 'work in progress' rather perplexed. All of this 'threads and kicks' talk has inspired some nostalgic and rather cringeinducing memories for me as I reflect on my style – or rather unstylish evolution. FEVER PITCH FASHION By Céline Gibson
The vibe amongst the audience at Ara Institute of Canterbury’s Pitch Student Fashion Show was electric as the first model took to the runway. Music thrummed, cameras rolled and we were captivated!
F
irst Year Students opened the show. Culottes, capes, shift and shirt dresses, along with patterned fabrics giving a nod to the 70’s were much in evidence, as were playful mix-it-up ensembles such as knit tops with shorts; oversized blazers over cropped tops, and bustiers with Palazzo pants. Second Year Students presented six categories to illustrate their prodigious talents. The Men’s Tailoring category saw duffle coats, hooded overcoats and bomber jackets, plus those classy classics - the blazer, double breasted suit, and tuxedo. The Drape, Kimono and Merino categories showcased some exquisitely detailed pieces, proving these design cubs will soon be lions in their field. The Third Year Students Collection was well worth the wait, with each student choosing

their own theme and interpretation of it. Natural fibres were widely used, emphasising their timelessness and sartorial superiority. The themes/inspirations were impressively eclectic, ranging from global - the Philippines, Africa and Miami, to Silver Screen’s assertive women – à la Katharine Hepburn. Other themes included youth rebellion; good and bad days; Nomads; the children of London’s Spitalfields - circa early 1900’s, and a 1927 German expressionist film, to name a few. Judges were Karlya Smith, Megan McKee, and Kathmandu’s Darren Barry. All garments from the Third Year Collection are for sale. HURRAH! Info: www.ara.ac.nz

reg has been an Ishaya (monk) for ten years, and Sally for seven. They follow the teachings of the Bright Path and practice Ascension Meditation. We discuss their documentary A Mindful Choice, and why it was made. “We’d been working on a number of projects for about ten years, trying to inspire people to find peace,” says Greg, “Our book ‘Boundless’ was out there, but we had long wanted to make a documentary with Ishaya colleagues overseas.” Sally explains that the purpose of the book and film is to show meditation’s not a whacky thing. “We all desire inner peace. We want to show it’s accessible to anyone – once you’ve made that choice.” To the outside world, an Ishaya leads a normal life, but their private life is dedicated to the teachings of The Bright Path – being conscious of living in the present. Greg made his choice in the year of the new millennium. “Up till then I thought happiness was found in working hard, making lots of money and retiring early; only, I wasn’t any happier.” On a skiing trip with friends, Greg got trapped in an avalanche. “Strangely, despite being buried, and barely able to breathe, I wasn’t scared; I felt this rush of profound peace, the silence was like a vast ocean
where anything was possible. I came out of that mountain not only alive, but a changed man. I knew what I wanted; I wanted peace.” Fifteen years later, Greg and Sally embarked on their journey to change lives. “Apodaca Prison is maximum security. Because of their crimes, these prisoners are tortured by the chatter in their heads,” explains Sally, “but meditation has brought them a peace they’ve never experienced – never hoped to experience.” The woman who instructs these hardened men is called Madhavi; the prisoners call her “An angel from heaven.” Madhavi’s gentle teaching has seen 750 of the prison’s 2,000 inmates now practising Ascension Meditation, and around 250 prison guards and staff. “The ripple effect of these people doing meditation has reached their families,” says Sally, “so their children are now certain of a new future.” A Mindful Choice visits a ballet academy in Cuba where dancers begin their day with Ascension Meditation, and also follows a woman in England with terminal cancer, and a father who has overcome his addictions to become a revered mentor to his twenty-one year old son. A Mindful Choice screens in Christchurch in the New Year, and will be available on Video on Demand platforms. Sally says of the men in Apodaca: “If they can achieve inner peace, we all can. They’re the true heroes - the ones standing tall.” Film link: www.choicethefilm.com New Zealand Ascension Workshop info: www.thebrightpath.co.nz

David Hiatt’s Canterbury Guiding Company had only been in operation three weeks when the September 2010 earthquake hit. “Some would call it bad timing,” says David, “but we weren’t going to walk away. o what makes one small tourism company so successful? “What we offer is ‘bespoke tourism’ to our clients. We provide them with unique experiences that showcase the very best of our region, and we ensure they leave our country knowing they have seen some of the most hidden but beautiful places in the world.” Canterbury Guiding Company covers the central South Island - Kaikoura, Aoraki Mount Cook, and into the mountains through to the most eastern point of Banks Peninsula. There are five guides out and about on a regular basis taking tourists on boat charters, helicopter excursions, and expeditions to high country stations, private gardens, and vineyards. Accommodation is typically enjoyed at the stunning Otahuna Lodge and Annandale Lodge. David won’t drop any famous names,
but he’s happy to acknowledge that they cater to some highly influential C.E.O.’s, entertainers and sports people. “But they’re treated like regular people,” says David, “because that’s what they want.” David loves his job, “I get to meet amazing, inspiring people who are captivated by the beauty of our country. We live in such a unique, safe place. We are very lucky.” Go to: www.canterburyguides.com

WGSD was an initiative conceived by New Zealand women for New Zealand women, including the lgbtg community. “There’s a huge gap in pay equity in this country; on average, women earn 12 percent less than men. We need more women leaders, and a stronger presence in public and private sectors.”
We need more women leaders, and a stronger presence in public and private sectors.”
WOMEN WHO GET IT DONE On February 24 – 26, Living Springs, Governor’s Bay will host the first South Island WWGSD (Women Who get **** Done) Unconference, thanks to Catarina Guiterrez and her colleagues.
Catarina describes the women she met at Wellington’s WWGSD Unconference, June 2016. “There were corporates; lawyers; scientists; environmentalists; financiers, teachers…it was a broad, diverse and true representation of New Zealand women today.” Registrations for WWGSD Christchurch Unconference were set at 120, and closed December 15. Catarina emphasises the importance of shoulder tapping for future Unconferences. “Some women may feel they’re unsuited to attend, but they are. It’s vital we reach out and tell them their voice is important.” What about that ‘S’ word? Catarina’s laugh is warm. “Well, women put up with a lot of it. We’re trying to remove the negativity from the word and make it our own – reclaim it, and make it a positive!” Go to: www.wwgsd.nz

KARENA & KASEY UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH
FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEBORAH ASPRAY STREET ART BY KATE MCINTYRE
I
f you ever want to see what authenticity personified looks like, get acquainted with Masterchef 2014 winners and sisters Karena & Kasey Bird. Straight talking, food infatuated, smart as a whip and refreshingly candid; the culinary prodigies have just published their second recipe book Hungry made up of inspiration and innovation from their travels around the world – these adventures have captured the nation’s imagination in an eponymous, ten-part televised series, Karena and Kasey’s Kitchen Diplomacy. Exponents of taking an analytical and considered approach to all they do, Metropol explores the ins and outs of the girls’ fast-paced lives and everything in between.
Why cooking? Kasey: It was always a part of us. We were always obsessed with food – although initially we never thought of it as a career. We grew up in a town of 900 people (Maketū – they still live there) where there was nowhere to eat out. Karena: At high school, we would save up, pool our money together, and book in to the nicest restaurant in Auckland and spend all of our money on that meal. We watched cooking shows and went on You Tube – cooking was something we always did in our spare time. When we were younger it was really Kasey cooking in the kitchen with Mum. Over time though I thought it would be fun and it came naturally. I’d liken it to when some kids just pick up a pencil and draw, or kids who pick up drum sticks and find rhythm on the drum set. Even if we don’t know exactly how to do something, we always find a way through instinct.
{
Can you share any horrible outcomes from experiments as kids? Kasey: I remember when we were young – Mum was out and taking ages, so we started making something. It had milo and jam in it and we put it into the microwave and it exploded everywhere… She wasn’t happy. What is the biggest blessing and the biggest ‘challenge’ of working together? Karena: There are heaps of blessings – we have the same morals and the same personality fundamentally, which is essential, and the key to why we get along so well. We are different, but the same. We were both brought up to be really honest and to not take things personally. If Kasey gives me advice, she doesn’t get offended if I say I don’t agree with something she has suggested… I can be quite controlling and stubborn. I like to get my way!

SINCE 1997
Kasey (smiling in response): I try to figure out what Karena wants and I work harder to get to that place too. Karena: I’m a really independent person, so before all of this I was used to doing things by myself. I’ve had to remind myself to talk as a duo – ‘we’ instead of ‘I’. Kasey: We are very analytical in everything we do so we always reflect on the issues and consider each other. What is your most surreal moment to date? Kasey: For me it was when we won best TV Cook Book (For The Love Of) at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in China - this was surreal. We made the decision to self-publish this book which everyone told us not to do. But it felt like the right decision and to win the award confirmed that. Karena: Same for me. What is the recipe for success? Karena: First of all, you have to make a decision – whatever it is; row across The Pacific or make a cook book. Once you decide, make a plan. We spreadsheet everything so we can tick it off. You need to put down practical steps to reach your goal and listen to others. It’s about learning when to take advice and leave it – you need the wisdom to know when to leave it. Self-reflection is important to determine if you are doing a good job or if you need to improve. You need to be prepared to take criticism too. Kasey: Find something you are passionate about – this is essential to do well at something. You need to be passionate to feel fulfilled in what you are doing. Execution is key – you can have awesome ideas, but if you are not going to do things to execute your ideas, they don’t matter.
HUNGRY COOKBOOK
What are your favourite countries thus far? Karena: We’ve been all over the world, but we have been all over New Zealand too! Kasey: Some of the highlights for me were Noma in Copenhagen and going to the theme park in Tivoli! Abu Dhabi and Dubai too. Italy was awesome and Korea was funky and fashionable. Karena: In San Francisco we only saw the Golden Gate Bridge by bus! We were too busy eating at the restaurants. We are each other’s favourite travel buddies because we’d rather eat at seven duck restaurants than see the Great Wall of China. Kasey: For us it goes: food, fashion and then monuments. We’ve taken our memories and made them into recipes – every recipe in Hungry has a memory attached to it.
Best midnight snack? Karena: For me, when you open the fridge, it’s whatever is in there. I’ll fry it in a pan and make weird dishes. Kasey: One time she had random stuff out and said she was making a salad. It ended up a soup… Karena: I’ll have leftovers on toast – lasagne or mashed potatoes on toast... and two minute noodles. Protein, fat and carbs. Kasey: I don’t love carbs like that. I like cold food – I’ll always ask if we have leftover cold sausages. I love cold mince pies!

New’s Year Eve at Wanaka’s picturesque Lake Hawea was the perfect time and perfect venue for the inaugural Top Paddock Music Festival; a music extravaganza of contemporary country, rock, pop, blues, roots and bluegrass which saw some 1,500 people come to party in the New Year. The event was staged in the Bottom Paddock of Lake Hawea Hotel, while the Middle Paddock was utilised as a campsite. Further down the track, the vision is to have the Top Paddock host the Festival, which will hold up to 5000 people.

op Paddock Festival is about creating an awesome music culture over the New Year festive week,” explains Top Paddock Festival Director, J. Claire. “Our Number One focus is fan experience - to have a great time at a great party where the vibe is big sound with very danceable, high energy music.” Artists taking part in the first Top Paddock Festival were Jared Porter from the USA, Judah Kelly from Australia, and representing Aotearoa, our very own cream-of- the-crop performers Jody Direen, Kaylee Bell, Assembly Required, Kayla Mahon, Valley Bluegrass, Brad Staley, Jenny Harraway and Cam Luxton. Top Paddock provides 8½ hours of continuous music with the best production team behind it. “We have the most beautiful alpine and lake scenery; it’s wild and pure which provides a unique backdrop to stage our event.” VIP ticket holders had the luxury option of ordering from an exclusive VIP menu, while regular ticket holders fuelled their danced-out bodies with hearty fare from Stags Head and Southern Hog. For seafood lovers, Frankos provided a mouth-watering selection, including Whitebait Patties and Blue Cod, and for some sweet-lickin’ indulgence there was Lake Hawea real fruit ice-cream. For future Top Paddock Festival events, J. Claire recommends using their information website. “We’re very open to people reaching out to us with any queries they may have; we want to help people as much as we can to be able to attend our festivals, because we recognise how hard people work during the year, and this night’s for them. It’s a time to forget the world and its worries, let their hair down and play.” A giggle comes down the telephone line, “Play harder, I guess. It’s quite surreal being covered head-to-toe in paint, but the hardest part was trying to maintain that pose – what a responsibility!” Al’s Lord Lyttelton portrait hangs in Lyttelton’s Supervalue Supermarket. Other famous historical portraits can be viewed at various Lyttelton businesses. Would Al consider sitting for Julia again, if offered the chance? “I wouldn’t hesitate; yes please!” Who would he like to be - a famous singer, perhaps? “No, something outside my usual sphere – an All Black would be great. That’s what’s so enjoyable - the transformation into this different person. It’s like nothing else.” All the portraits are for sale, along with limited prints. The marriage of dye to cloth or leather has borne many a beautiful garment and accessory.
W
e’ve become rather fond of a particular technique that has vast and transformative potential –Shibori. This dyeing technique hails from Japan and dates back as far as the eight century. Shibori has impressive versatility with an infinite number of ways that one can experiment with creating wildly different patterns. This involves twisting, folding, binding, stitching or compressing cloth – each method is utilised to achieve a desired aesthetic.
In the Western World, one of the hallmarks of Generation Y’s childhood - tiedye- is actually a form of Kanoko Shibori. Tie dye has experienced a rebirth in recent years, no longer relegated to the back of the wardrobe, but rather celebrated and promulgated by the sartorial Powers-thatBe for its effortlessly bohemian qualities. We sought out one of the most illustrious examples we could find to illustrate the technique – is that the sound of purses unzipping? Go on, we won’t tell!
Shibori has impressive versatility with an infinite number of ways that one can experiment with creating wildly different patterns.
{
Premium Italian leather is dyed using three separate Shibori techniques. This process involves binding the leather and dyeing, and then treating it to create a completely unique piece of soft and pliable leather every time. The clutches are then created, lined with 100 percent crisp white cotton, accented with a silver zip. No two clutches from the range can ever be the same.

For a healthy looking base hue, turn to a tanning wipe followed by a dusting of durable bronzer that you can brush over your neck and décolletage. A strobe cream will bless you with cheekbones to die for, and with a pop of down-to-earth colour on your pout, you’ll achieve blissful beauty. IF THE SHOE FITS Every wardrobe deserves to be taken to new heights. A killer pair of heels is always up for the task.
By Kate Pierson
As sophisticated and leg-lengthening as they may be; heels should come with a survival guide. From pumps to platforms, there’s a heel for every occasion, but diversity aside, there are some general rules for every type.
1.
Buy in the bricks and mortar world: you may be able to get away with some clothing purchases through a virtual retailer, but shoes are best bought in-store so you can ensure your foot isn’t too narrow/wide for the style. The last thing you want is your foot sliding forward placing pressuring on your toes.
WINDSOR SMITH ROXY
2. 3.
Strike the right slope: a heel that has a gradual slope rather than an almost vertical elevation will be much kinder to your foot. Open up: an open toe shoe will help your foot to breathe and enable you to avoid any nasty rubbing that may lead to blisters.

uite frankly there is nothing more appetising than a corporate wardrobe that works to give us a little swagger in our stride as we head through the office doors. For 2017, it’s all about perfect tailoring – long, lithe lines, structured silhouettes and fabulous fabrics. Nothing can compete with a bespoke garment – something that’s made to measure and flatter every curve of your body, but we have some practical tips for how to invest in work wear that nips and tucks in all the right places.

Take a measured approach: many of us think we know our size, but when it comes to finding and selecting genuinely form-flattering garments, knowing your leg inseam, sleeve length, waist, hips, and size of your chest is absolutely essential. LILLIAN KHALLOUF
Zone in on the troublesome spots: the key is to buy a piece that fits the widest part of your body and then adjust the rest of the garment accordingly! For example, pear shapes should buy pieces that fit their bottom. Find the sweet spots: there are some sure-fire ways to ensure a beautiful fit – some of our favourites include: long sleeve garments hitting just below the wrist bone with a little bit of ease for comfort; tailored pants falling just shy of the ground; jacket shoulders always sitting at the shoulder and not below.

A WARM WELCOME ALWAYS AT
LONGHURST ULTRASOUND The team at Longhurst Ultrasound are celebrating more than the new year – they recently shifted upstairs to a smart, new suite of rooms at Longhurst Health in Halswell and have increased their hours to welcome clients both existing and new.
N
ow open five days a week from 8am to 5pm, and until 6.30 pm on Thursdays, they provide a range of ultrasound services using the most state of the art equipment from Toshiba. What sets them apart is more than their cutting-edge equipment, however, it is also their friendly, personal approach. Because they are a small, independent company, they are able to focus on their clients and provide a flexible service that meets a patient’s needs. It is the sonographer himself who will contact the referrer to discuss a case if there are any queries or concerns, and he will work through results with a client. The team understand that when someone receives a referral from their doctor or midwife for an ultrasound scan, they have a choice of where to go, and they know that many choose
them because of their warm welcome and relaxed, pleasant environment. The Longhurst Health building is on the outskirts of town with heaps of free parking, perfectly situated for people in and around the south and west of Christchurch or those who prefer to avoid the city centre. The location is ideal – easily accessible with a range of other healthcare providers on-site and even a coffee shop to relax in before or after your appointment. Longhurst Ultrasound are on hand to provide scans at all stages of pregnancy so clients know they and their baby are healthy and how the pregnancy is progressing. The team can quickly and efficiently identify any potential problems, and the Nuchal Translucency scan can provide a risk assessment for Downs’ Syndrome. They also offer a wide range of other ultrasound services for
adults and paediatric scans for babies and children ensuring little ones are cared for in a warm room with warm gel, making the scan as non-invasive and comfortable as possible. For older patients, they can help identify potential health problems such as artery disease, ovarian cysts, gallstones, locate masses and deep vein thromboses, or perform musculoskeletal scans following injuries. Whatever the reason for referral and whatever the result, clients are treated with kindness and respect throughout their visit, and know results will be with their referrer quickly and efficiently so that any future treatment can begin without delay. e’re spoiled for choice in our southern city when it comes to farmers’ and crafts markets. The Rotary-led Riccarton Markets, the Encraftment Market and Woolston’s Shabby Chic Market Day, and farmers’ markets at Riccarton House, Mt Pleasant and Lyttelton are just some of our favourite weekend hot spots. Some of us like to go just that little bit further when it comes to the eponymous treasure hunt. The Christmas Markets in Paris and the North Laine Markets in Brighton are two global markets people travel far and wide to reach.
By Melinda Collins
In fact, that’s exactly what travelling antique dealers Geoffrey and Jennifer Maxwell were doing just a few years ago, regularly making the trip to France to fossick through the Brocante Markets to select goods for La Folie Jolie, their (now former) French shop in Akaroa. Yet when they discovered just how much their customers were charmed by the idea of doing the fossicking for themselves, they decided to let their customers do just that. The idea was “practically French”, Jennifer laughs, “stylishly simple, selfindulgent and probably illogical from a business point of view”. One year later, the French shop in Akaroa had new owners and a new location and from there emerged Found in France, a boutique tour company dedicated to hosting groups in France for the purpose of finding and buying brocante and shipping it back home. For the past two years Found in France has been hosting small groups in the Loire Valley and further south, in the Languedoc, with tours tailored to individual requirements, offering assistance with buying, bargaining and the packing of purchases. Although brocante is an untranslatable French word for the French obsession with selling and buying antiques, ephemera, vintage goods and collectibles, it could be loosely translated to ‘treasure-hunting’.

The showing – which includes work by Andrew Beck, Holly Best, Jordana Bragg, Conor Clarke, Chris Corson-Scott, Solomon Mortimer, Ane Tonga, Shaun Waugh, and Rainer Weston – asks how this younger generation of artists is responding to the new cultural conditions of photography. On display at Christchurch Art Gallery until 12 March 2017, The Devil’s Blind Spot features works from old-fashioned film cameras, computer data, photobooks and installations. “Each represents a different kind of engagement with the contemporary, offering a reflection on present culture,” Senior Curator Lara Strongman says. “Photography is the standout visual medium of our time. We’re bombarded by images and saturated with ‘gifs’ and ‘jpgs’. Smartphones have pushed a camera into everyone’s hands, and the Internet has made us publishers and consumers of images like never before. “It’s truly an exciting time for photography, and The Devil’s Blind Spot is a chance to sample some of New Zealand’s best young and up-and-coming artists behind the lens.”

SHAKES By Melinda Collins
Since we started Instagramming our favourite eats, they’ve become more elaborate, more over the top and more in your face than ever before. It’s an evolution which is well encapsulated by the ‘freakshake’.
W
Pond Dalston: The newest addition to London’s ‘Frankenshake’ scene is this treat from Hawaiian-themed restaurant Pond Dalston.
hen it comes to summertime drinks, the freakshake is the cream of the crop. First created in Canberra, Australia, the shakes have spread like wildfire not just across the country, but around the globe. From Nutella Pretzel shakes, to the Toasted Marshmallow and Brownie shake, or even a Salted Caramel Apple Pie shake, there’s a freakshake to suit almost everyone’s tastes, whether you’re a crazy chocoholic, an Amaretto aficionado, or a cookie dough fan. Freakshakes have even been known to be stuffed with everything from pretzels and Oreos to meringues and even doughnuts. Pâtissez, a bakery and café in Canberra, Australia, first gained notoriety for its freakshakes last year, selling up to 249 of the delectable desserts in a day. The staff had to request patience from the masses as they stocked up on “trays of marshmallow, brownie, pecan pie, caramelised puff pastry AND ... our chocolate fudge, creme patissiere and salted caramel” to meet the demand for these crazy concoctions. So why not indulge your inner sweet tooth this Christmas after all? More is definitely more when it comes to the freakshake game.

FAUX
MEATS By Melinda Collins
Pop into any major supermarket these days, and you are virtually guaranteed to find faux meats from sausages to frozen veggie burgers.
B
ut veganism has gone upmarket, with an increasing number of restaurants offering delicious vegan versions for everything from caviar to lamb vindaloo. If you want to get a little adventurous in the kitchen and try some meat-free cooking for yourself, there are plenty of options. Packed with vegan protein, fibre and omega 3 fatty acids, tempeh is a pressedbean cake fermented with whole soy beans, rice, barley, or wheat. With its bulky size and appearance, it’s a useful meat replacement in stews, casseroles and barbecue dishes. Essentially fermented soybeans, nattō can be an acquired taste because of its powerful smell, strong flavour and slimy texture. But as an easily digestible protein
source, the Japanese dish is a popular meat alternative for stir fries and curries, with the cooking helping to dissipate the pungency. One of the most popular and versatile meat alternatives – and another soybean product – is tofu. A white cheese curd made with coagulated soy milk, tofu has a low calorie count and relatively large amounts of protein. A great substitute for meat, fish and seafood, it soaks up flavours from sauces, soups and spices. Textured vegetable protein (TVP) is one of the cheapest and most versatile of meat replacements. It is high in protein and can replicate meat products in texture and shape, or it can be added to meat dishes as a ‘meat extender’. Made using fresh soybeans, it’s a popular vegetarian meat substitute in virtually any recipe calling for ground beef or turkey. Next time you want to take a walk on the wild side, try one of these quirky bites.

HEIRLOOM PRODUCE By Melinda Collins
There’s been a real move away from commercialism when it comes to our culinary cravings, with organic, homemade and artisan being used to define this move towards quality over quantity.

nter, heirloom produce. Unlike their commercially grown siblings from the grocery store, heirloom vegetables are grown from seeds passed down from generation to generation. They’re open-pollinated, which means the pollination happens
UNLIKE THEIR COMMERCIALLY GROWN SIBLINGS FROM THE GROCERY STORE, HEIRLOOM VEGETABLES ARE GROWN FROM SEEDS PASSED DOWN FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION. completely naturally through insects and the wind, with no outside assistance. A lot of the breeding programmes for modern hybrids have sacrificed taste and nutrition in the plight for cheaper, more uniform produce, with increased yield and a more hardy plant.
But what heirloom vegetables don’t have in uniformity, they make up for in diverse colours, bright flavours and nutritional punch. For hundreds of generations, humans all over the planet have been growing crops and saving seeds from their best plants to
sow the following season. As a result, heirloom seeds are direct products of their environment, adapted to the conditions under which they were developed, which creates a global diversity. Heirloom tomatoes, for example, come in variations of pink, red, yellow or a mottled mix of all three which makes them aesthetically cool. But what makes heirlooms even better is, quite simply, the flavour. Because, when it comes to cuisine, it’s all about quality not quantity and that’s what heirloom produce is all about.

H
arry Kosato was the highest bidder, which meant we were to cook him, five of his friends and the New Zealand ambassador to Japan a fourcourse dinner. This was the dessert we created for that dinner, using gorgeous berries that were in abundance at that time of year in Japan. The addition of the salted sesame gives a surprising savoury factor to this spring dessert to contrast with the fresh berries and creamy ice cream.
4 cups blueberries, fresh or frozen 100g icing sugar 500ml cream
Place the blueberries in a blender and blend until smooth. You may need to add a touch of the cream to get it going. Add the icing sugar and whisk together till it is dissolved. Whisk the cream until soft peaks form. Add a third of the whipped cream to the blueberry mix, folding it in until it is completely combined. Add the rest of the cream to the bowl and fold together as gently as possible until it is combined, trying to not knock too much of the air out of the cream. Pour the mixture into an airtight container, cover with a lid and place in the freezer overnight.

‘A
glamorous bug’ sounds like an oxymoron, but with a rapidly diversifying range of bedazzled and gold and silver painted insects invading the shelves of boutique home stores, there’s no doubt this former ‘pest’ has become a visual pleasure. From beetles to butterflies, interiors are enhanced by the presence of a cleverly positioned ornament. Resting on a stack of divine lifestyle books, or clustered in a group on a coffee table sharing the limelight with other quirky trinkets or accompanying a bouquet of wild blooms; give your bugs the opportunity to shine. If you’d like to bless your walls with some bling, experiment with hanging them diagonally or string them up with thread. Offering an eclectic twist to any living space in your home – this delicate accent will work in modern and character homes.

CHEERS TO CHAIRS By Kate Pierson
Accent chairs – also dubbed ‘occasional chairs’ have a chameleon like nature and are devoted to being flexible.
A
s a stylish addition to fixtures on your seating scene, the key things to consider when you make your accent chair selection include sizing up the space - sounds simple enough, but avoiding clutter is key when it comes to the placement of your accent pieces. Their status can quickly move from pride of joy to royal pain if you purchase an oversize style that makes its presence felt a bit too much. Also, try before you buy - while we all want our investments to make an impact, romancing the eye of visitors to our home; comfort is key. Don’t be afraid to shop around and avoid impulsive or emotive purchases based on aesthetic alone.

There’s also a pre-occupation with mysterious personalities; anonymous faces that strike a powerful pose, have the ability to connote whimsy and introduce passion into a space. A FLICKER OF FANCY By Kate Pierson
While there is some debate over which culture can take credit for the development of candles – some would argue in favour of the Egyptians and others for Romans – it is an indisputable fact that they add a touch of luxe and a whole lot of ambience to the home.
I
n 2016, cloches become the newest form of candle candy and it would seem their popularity shows no sign of abating in 2017. Cloches are more than just a beautiful companion to candles, they actually keep them safe when the candle has been relieved of its mood-lighting duties. Glass cloches help the candle retain its perfume and protect it from dust. Of a fragile nature, cloches should never be used over top of a naked flame and will ideally be washed with luke warm water and no detergents.

STAY BY ANTONY GORMLEY
Put your walking shoes on, and explore the inner city this summer.
2. Antony Gormley, Stay – Durham Street Dedicating some time to experience Anthony Gormley’s Stay in the Avon River is a must, and while you are there turn around and see part of the inner city that is complete. Offering plenty to discuss when it comes to debating architectural styles, it is incredibly encouraging to see the activity that is happening along this major route through the city. It is an indication of the flourishing and vibrant city we will become.
3. Regan Gentry, Flour Power – Corner of Hereford and High Streets From Stay, we cross the river and head to Regan Gentry’s Flour Power. Installed in 2008 this piece brings a sense of pre-quake familiarity to an otherwise unrecognisable landscape. The anchor of this area is the new ANZ Centre. The first major building to be completed in this section of the city, it has rejuvenated an area that had become dormant. A stone’s throw from The Crossing this is without a doubt the spot to watch in 2017 as fashion outlets, eateries and more start to reopen and bring life back to this part of the city. 4. art, Nucleus by Phil Price. At the heart of this area of the city, this sculpture has an impressive presence and is perfectly poised at the gateway to the Innovation Precinct. A year ago I wrote about this area being one to watch, now it is happening. C4 Café has been a stalwart of the area and has been joined by a number of others all fuelled by the big developments: Environment Canterbury, Vodafone and The Bus Exchange, which have paved the way for the smaller scale businesses to pop up. Like a forest, the big trees have grown, establishing a safe and sheltered space in which the forest floor can come alive. 5. Anton Parsons, Passing Time – Corner St Asaph and Madras Streets The last point on our walk is Passing Time by Anton Parsons. Installed only a few days before the February 22 earthquake, this sculpture is located at a critical intersection in our future city. It is where the frame of the inner city ends and hence is set to become an area of mixed use development, catering for apartment living and the needs of the artistic communities that already call this area home. Set to become a hot-spot for entertainment and night life, this will be an exciting area to watch unfold. www.caarc.co.nz

I dropped in to pick up the Isuzu D-max from Silvester Motor company in Moorhouse Avenue and the first thing I noticed about the Isuzu Diesel 3 litre 130 kW/380Nm D-max with 3.5 tonne towing was that it was a MANUAL.

I
drive one or two new cars a week and everything this year has been automatic so it was a pleasure to try something I haven’t experienced in a while. The decision to use the gear when YOU want to is refreshing. The 4-wheel drive high and low ratio would be great on the farm in manual and sometimes you need that finger on the button to master off-road terrain. The D-Max is good for several reasons but the primary drawcard that got
me was the simplicity of the model; simple to operate, simple to navigate with the technology, simple to drive. This is a double cab utility vehicle that’s proud of its authenticity – it’s not trying to be anything but a solid vehicle for work. But hell, you can take it for a play too. With 4 x 4, 4 x 2, air conditioning, reversing camera, and a comfortable seating arrangement, this lifestyler is up for grabs for $57,990 (automatic) and $55,790 (manual). It’s all there for the taking in the D-Max and Donna Silvester justly says, “Silvester’s are proud to have been New Zealand’s first Isuzu dealership, enjoying the unprecedented year-on-year growth of such a strong, recognised brand. We’ve remained the top selling Isuzu dealership in the South Island since 2010.” Now I can tell you all the statistics in the world about the D-Max, but the reality is, you’ve just got to try it for yourself. If you’re going to be getting this as your fleet vehicle; celebrate in the knowledge you are getting a great vehicle to drive that will keep you safe and get the job done. If you’re a guy like me, you’re always on the lookout for a bloody good ute. This is one.
