T
he tides of gender roles have been changing recently, perhaps best illustrated by an off-hand comment by Pippa Wetzell’s seven-year-old. “Mum, can a boy be Prime Minister?” he asked her soon after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern had given birth to her first child, Neve. And, although Pippa’s reply “Absolutely, boys can do anything girls can do” is, at face value, accurate, it has always been equally as accurate in reverse. Because although until now, women have generally been physically and mentally ‘capable’ of doing anything men can do, fact is, they haven’t been ‘able’ to. If you’re still wondering what the big deal is about the Prime Minister giving birth while in office, then I’m glad. I’m glad because of what that means for New Zealand as a country. Globally there are very few women in power and fewer yet of childbearing age. It has been almost 30 years since Pakistan’s then leader, Benazir Bhutto gave birth to her daughter Bakhtawar. She was the only modern head of government to give birth while in office, until now. As we celebrate the 125 year anniversary of Kate Sheppard’s pioneering women’s suffrage movement successfully campaigning for women to get the right to vote at a time when no other country had done so, we’re now onto our third female Prime Minister. Does that make us unique? Does that make us special? Does that make us extraordinary? It does, but perhaps not in the eyes of Pippa’s son’s generation ABC AUDITED after all, they’re growing up in a country where it’s normal for a woman to be in power.

epurposing waste wood into furniture, sculpture and jewellery is at the heart of Rekindle, which has just made its new creative home at the Arts Centre, as part of a six-month licence under the Life in Vacant Spaces scheme (LiVS). Rekindle’s relationship with the Arts Centre began last year when the Arts Centre commissioned a communal table and benches for the level 1 landing in the Boys’ High building. The table was installed in February 2018 and was made using Ash logs sourced from Hagley Park, gifted to Rekindle by Christchurch City Council. “The traditional methods used by Rekindle’s craftspeople are a wonderful addition to our arts community and the Life in Vacant Spaces Scheme aligns perfectly
with the Arts Centre’s vision to be a home for creative entrepreneurs and a nurturing environment for start-ups,” Arts Centre Acting CEO Jane Parfitt says. The tenancy gives Rekindle the opportunity to re-establish its Resourceful Skills workshops and bring back craft to the Arts Centre and city centre. “We have long hoped to be at the Arts Centre, as we strongly believe in craft being an essential and prominent part of our city,” Rekindle Director Juliet Arnott says. “We hope to provide many opportunities for Cantabrians to become involved in craft, including activities during the school holidays for young people to learn the art of traditional greenwood-working methods as well as free public workshops.”

Technological Talents Technological change is sweeping the world and, although many are being overwhelmed by its disruptive nature, St Andrew’s College is taking the technological opportunities with both hands. Rather than simply teaching its students how to be technology users, it is preparing students to control and create future technology, and investing accordingly in this area.
ast year St Andrew’s expanded its Technology programme, appointing Wilj Dekkers to the newly created role of Head of Innovation and Information Services. Wilj has been tasked with leading the development of the new Green Library and Innovation Centre, which was officially opened last month. This has seen the extension of the existing Secondary School Library, which now features innovation, design and construction spaces with access to modern tools such as 3D printers and laser cutters. Current student projects in the new Green Centre include the development of virtual reality content to help Allanvale School students learn to cross the road safely and a new, online ordering system for the St Andrew’s College cafeteria allowing parents to ‘top up’ their child’s account and keep track of their purchases. St Andrew’s College also has a strong robotics programme and younger students participate in various coding clubs and Lego Mindstorm. Rector Christine Leighton says the Green Library and Innovation Centre is the College’s response to the changing face of education. “We are mindful technology will bring the inevitable disruption to our educational landscape and are conscious of being adaptable and responsive to change,” she says. “The new Green Centre provides a space where inspiration, innovation, creativity and collaboration are at the heart of how our students learn.”

Hitting the right note By Melinda Collins
Bic Runga is one of Canterbury’s most successful exports and, although she hasn’t gone far – just the other end of the country – Christchurch is where her heart is.
B
ic released her debut album Drive in August 1997 to popular acclaim; an album that is widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s most iconic. It secured the New Zealand Music Award for Album of the Year in 1998, after going seven times platinum. But that was only the beginning for this prodigious talent who has been hitting the right note for more than 20 years, collecting some of the country’s biggest musical accolades. Metropol caught up with Bic – its Chinese checked vowel making pronunciation closer to Bec – about her musical passion and living in the moment.
Where did your musical passion come from and how was that nurtured? I’m the youngest in my family and I remember on rainy days my big sisters would say “ok, let’s all write some songs!” I was five when I wrote my first song. It was called Snow Flake. It’s quite a good thing to get little kids to do before they think that they can’t. You come from such a musical family, are your children musical? My children are really musical and my 10 year old son just announced that he wants to be a musician! Most parents would shudder at the thought of this, but for me it was a relief; at least I know what to do with him now! How has your song writing evolved throughout your career? I had a good run between the ages of 18 and 27, I wrote a lot and I didn’t doubt myself. Then I got the fear! Now that I’ve had a family and I’m in what you might call the middle years, I feel experienced and more excited to do things however I want to, without rules. 10 July 5, 2018 Metropol
How do you juggle the demands of work and family? With great difficulty! I try to be positive; sometimes when you’re exhausted that’s all there is! And learning new skills keeps me happy. I’m learning to engineer and mix music more – technical stuff that I never got too involved in before suddenly interests me, so everything is new again. Where do you draw your inspiration from and who are some of your favourite artists? I’m looking to older women as inspiration these days – Alice Coltrane, Patti Smith, Laurie Anderson, Yoko Ono. To commit to being an artist for the long haul is really exciting to me. How does it feel to be hailed as an icon of the New Zealand music scene? I don’t think about it too much, especially not these days. I think it’s good to look forward and not look back too much. Don’t they say the secret to happiness is a short memory? I think it’s good to live in the present and have things to look forward to. Why did you make the decision to become involved with the Māia Health Foundation? Working with the people at Maia has been such a pleasure. Musicians get so much air time and sometimes my interviews seem like I’m repeating myself so it’s good to have something else to rep, something else to advocate for. I’ve never been an ambassador for a charity before and it feels good to be involved in this one in my hometown. Do you get the opportunity to get back to Christchurch very often? What are some of your favourite things to do or places to go in Christchurch? The Arts Centre was my stomping ground in high school so I always feel happy and nostalgic when I’m in that part of town. And Lyttelton and Governors Bay are still special places for me. I went to Cashmere high and a lot of my friends came on a bus from over the hill; it was a cool place to hang out growing up as a teenager. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? I’m writing, recording and engineering as well, I’m having the time of my life! There’s no pressure and it’s super fun. Metropol July 5, 2018 11

t’s proven itself as a fabulous way to pass a great evening with an essential purpose underpinning proceedings: to accommodate and support families in vulnerable times when their children are sick and receiving hospital treatment. Ronald McDonald House South Island’s ‘Christchurch Supper Club’ was a night of sweet generosity, sumptuous dining and mingling. Restaurant and other venue owners, chefs, stylists, sponsors and guests all contributed to something mysterious, not to mention delicious, that inclement weather couldn’t dampen. Guests arrived at the ‘Harry-Potterish’ Christchurch Boys’ High auditorium’s old-world grandeur, not knowing where they’d end up. It was one of those Supper Club experiences, where 42 creative scenes had been set around the city, with degustation-or-feast menus designed to be savoured at these as-yet unknown warm, magical destinations, somewhere out there beyond the cold dark. Taxis waited to whisk guests away, once the live random draw was done. First choice of venue was actually an auction-itemised-privilege, but mostly guests were equally excited by all of the destinations and styles of dining on offer. An outstanding sum totalling more than $130,000 was raised. Mandy Kennedy, CEO of Ronald McDonald House remains “overwhelmed” by the effort and love shared on the night.
“These donated funds will stay in the South Island, directly supporting families who must travel for their child’s medical treatment. It costs $140 per night to care for one family and our charity helps over 700 families annually. “Supper Club 2018 provides funding towards our operational costs so that no family is ever charged for staying with us at our Ronald McDonald House South Island,” she adds, with gratitude.

Despite the ravages of winter, Christchurch is spoiled for choice when it comes to its city-wide social calendar and there’s certainly something special about it when the events on offer are in aid of a good cause.
14 July 5, 2018 Metropol
Last year’s inaugural Feast saw a roomful of 250 generous guests come together, digging deep into their pockets to raise $256,000 on the night – a feat that was five times the Foundation’s initial target of $50,000, reiterating the level of support in the community for the cause. The $256,000 went towards funding beds for parents staying with their sick children in Christchurch Hospital’s new acute services building as well as a future-proofed rooftop helipad. This year it’s all about landing the futureproofed rooftop helipad for good. After an incredibly successful $1m crowdfunding campaign in March, Māia is already well over halfway there. The production around this year’s Feast will be the finest yet, in the hopes of rounding off the fundraising for the helipad. Well-loved television and radio personality, Jason Gunn, will be making his way back to host the evening, livening things up with his effervescent and infectious nature, while Kiwi icon and Māia Ambassador, Bic Runga, returns to the stage for a live performance with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. Food will once again wow guests, with the locals from White Tie Catering creating a fine feast, as they team up with Peter Timbs and MG Marketing who have donated all the meat and fresh produce for the night respectively. Generous local brewery, Three Boys, and North Canterbury winery, Mt Beautiful Wines, will also be treating guests to their homegrown wine and beer. “We love to support Maia Health because it focuses on the wellbeing of Canterbury, so we’re bringing that to the table this year with a focus on the region,” White Tie Catering’s Katie Duncan says. “The food is being sourced locally to support the wellbeing of our community business and, with the best nutritional seasonal profile, the wellbeing of our guests. We’re bringing our precious community vibe to black tie style and it will be brilliant!” The biggest moment of the night will be the Live Auction – where a dozen money-can’t-buy experiences will be auctioned off in the hope that a record-breaking fundraising total will be realised for the charity. Tickets are selling incredibly fast, with less than 30 tickets remaining. Tickets are $315 per person / $3,000 for a table of 10. For more information visit www.maiahealth.org.nz/feast.

ob Dylan ds to town By Nicholas Henare
On Tuesday 28 August, Christchurch will have an icon of music visiting us again. With a career spanning six decades, Bob Dylan’s impact on popular music and culture is immeasurable.
H
e is responsible for some of the most influential albums of all time, including The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde, and his socially and politically charged singles, Blowin’ In The Wind and The Times They Are A-Changin’, are widely considered among the most important songs in modern music. The ‘voice of a generation’ boasts an unparalleled repertoire, including timeless classics, Like A Rolling Stone, Tangled Up In Blue, Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door and Girl From The North Country. Few people haven’t heard his music and to some, it connects on a much deeper level. Phantom Billstickers Owner/Marketer Jim Wilson says, “Bob Dylan just keeps on working and keeping his own counsel. His defining moment was in 1993 at a concert in Switzerland where he decided that he was ‘going to make a stand whether God delivered me or not...’ I take my lead from that....at some stage I just decided that I
was going to stand up like a man and just take all the s**t that people can hurl. I am on my own never-ending tour. I can’t see myself without seeing Bob Dylan.” With a catalogue of more than 50 albums, Dylan has sold more than 100 million records globally, received 11 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for Things Have Changed (Best Original Song), and has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2012, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama and, in 2016, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Last in New Zealand for three arena shows in 2014, Bob Dylan and his band are a commanding force on stage. To experience Bob Dylan live in concert is an opportunity to share an encounter with one of the last remaining musical legends of the modern era. The New Yorker reported last month on rumours that Bob Dylan has a new studio
album ready to go and his manager is going around Europe, for listening sessions in different cities to gauge unique perspectives. That gives you an idea about how deep Dylan and his team think. Great music drills into one’s core and resonates, creating a special moment in time and space. That’s why this artist connects on a deeper level and most only scratch the surface of what Bob is all about. Dylan has been able to weather the storm of other people’s opinion and just kept on with what his ever-changing vision is. An artist who polarises people, he doesn’t do interviews or venture into his opinion on politics; boy, wouldn’t you love to go there right now? But that’s the great thing about Dylan. He does it for his art. Who is he? The closest you get will be to see an ICON of modern music at Horncastle arena on 28 August. This may be your last chance – I suggest you go, with an open mind.

Commercial speed dating We’re all familiar with the concept of speed dating – a quick fire meet and greet of potential partners. Recognising the potential in this concept for our businesses, two local women – Rosina Bond and Bronwyn Sheehan – have combined speed dating with a commercial imperative. Metropol talks to Bronwyn about this clever collaborative concept.
1. 2. 3.
How did the speed networking event come about? When we were out celebrating Valentine’s Day over dinner, we spoke about creating excitement in business by connecting and empowering women in Christchurch. It has always been a bucket list goal for me to start a business bringing a dynamic group together, seeing women uplift each other for the benefit of empowering business relationships and forging friendships, while Rosina inspires women daily through her numerology and mentoring business. How long has this been going for? We have been building our business since February and launched our first event on 20th June at Supreme Supreme. What is the concept behind it? This was about forming strong connections through business contacts that didn’t call for dragging yourself out of bed early for breakfast or taking hours out of the workday. As small business owners, we realise the value of providing that service. Our core networking values are fast, fun and a funky approach to allow people to connect and collaborate in business. We launched first with women, as they are busy juggling many roles. This was the perfect start point for them to ‘shine and share’.
18 July 5, 2018 Metropol
4. 5. 6.
How was the first event received? Our first Speed Network event filled quickly before launching and our registrations are filling fast for our next event in August. The feedback that we have received from the ladies who attended is fantastic. Most have reported that they made four to five good contacts to reconnect with after the event. How powerful do you think this concept could be on the local networking/business environment? Business is in for change and small business is the way of the future. It is essential for any business to collaborate, but for small or individual business owners, this is a must, as it is easy to hide and then lose connection and profit. To stay connected and mindful of each other is how most powerful businesses remain fresh and profitable. Our platform and connection concept can accommodate people who want to take their business to the next level by spending a few hours coming along to chat about why they got into business and what solutions they can provide for their potential connections. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? We will continue to build our networking on the ground and our online presence. We have set ourselves first to connect women and in the next three months, we are planning to run a mixed event. www.thespeednetwork.co.nz

Q&A
SUSTAINED SUCCESS Jenni Rolton’s experience and success is evident in everything she does and is supported by the facts. Year after year she has been a member of Canterbury’s Harcourts Top 10. Today she talks about some of the many reasons for her success. Q. Would I be right in suggesting “people first” is a key to your business success? A. Yes, great real estate is definitely about “people first”, of course
it is also about homes being sold or bought. In order to achieve those outcomes I know you need to be a good listener and I will always take the time to find out exactly what my clients need. During my time in real estate I have made many good friends and have become not only their preferred salesperson but also their wider family’s. Every week I am amazed what a high percentage of my business is based on referrals from passed clients and for that I am truly grateful.
Q. If you were to choose five personal qualities that have kept you succeeding, what would they be? A. Pride in what I do for my clients is so important to me. Linked
to this is understanding and empathy, taking the time for people is essential. Another non-negotiable quality is integrity, this is one of the fundamental reasons I choose to work at Harcourts Holmwood. My final two qualities would be strong communication skills (I always tell my clients the truth) and tenacity (I don’t give up easily, as many of my clients would attest to).
Q. If I am thinking of selling with you, what should I do before we meet? A. The heart of a great business relationship is trust and open
communication. I am a details person so that means lots of notes on the house, technical matters along with all EQC and insurance information. Part of that determination to do the right thing is that once I have completed an appraisal I will revisit and discuss my findings with you. It is imperative in a changing market that this is up to date.
Q. What drives you Jenni?
Q. If I am looking for a property can you help?
A. In a way it’s quite simple, I am a results driven person. In my
A. I am always happy to assist buyers and I have found it works
early years in real estate it was a matter of sink or swim as I had a young son to support and educate. There was only one way to do it and that was to work hard. As it is said, it only takes 21 days to form a habit so my passion to achieve just became the norm. There were some very tough times, however, my pride, would never allow me to give up and survival was certainly my ‘why’. My personal dedication for doing the very best for my clients whether they are selling or buying, is a huge driver for me. When showing a potential purchaser a home I always treat the home as if it is my own.
most effectively when we share warm, open dialogue. I appreciate that many people have never purchased before and the process can be daunting and that is why I am here to help. I also have a great team of colleagues that I work with daily to help find you that special place.

long public courses from the Sydenham premises, for individuals or groups in class sizes of up to 16. “We get lots of feedback from people saying they were blown away – it’s not dull or boring as they were expecting,” Health and First Aid Manager Craig McGuigan says. Chest compressions timed to the beat of Queen’s song ‘Another one bites the dust’ and the latest equipment, such as mannequins which light up, make for a memorable learning experience. “Our engaging trainers teach the latest best practice. We have a former paramedic, a first responder, and a New York fire fighter, all with teaching excellence under their belts, sharing personal stories. They go beyond just compliance.” Craig says realistically everyone should be trained. “Although most companies are required to have first aid representatives, they are not always on site and might even be the person injured. First aid skills are invaluable outside of the workplace too.” A six-hour refresher course offers the chance to learn variety and new protocols, even if someone initially trained with another provider. “As a local and privatelyowned company, we can respond to changes very quickly.” Four-hour psychological first aid courses are also taught, for mental health wellbeing in the workplace – providing the tools to recognise and talk about it. For Work & Play Christchurch’s own menswear brand, Cutler & Co, has a new flagship store. On the Colombo street-side ground floor of The Crossing, it’s offering a warm, heritage-infused winter range.
H
aving expanded out well beyond Canterbury’s borders to premium retail stores throughout Australasia, Cutler’s clothes combine tactile, quality materials with sophisticated ease of wear. European in styling, the clothes here are silhouette-savvy, with a ‘premium-casual-cool’ sort of vibe. Successfully trading since the ‘90s, the Cutler brand has proven pedigree. In addition, European labels LTB Jeans, DStrezzed and the Amsterdam-based No Excess are also on-site. These allow Cutler & Co to offer every type of jean, from professional-image clean-finish denim to worn-in ‘destroyed’ denim. General Manager Cameron Wright says the store’s clothing is all about great-feeling Italian cottons and knit fabrics in clothes designed to
fit well, ideal for Kiwi lifestyles. “Most events in urban life are premium-casual. We sell almost the entire man’s wardrobe…clothes, shoes, and accessories for work, after-work gatherings, not forgetting off-duty weekends.” Cutler & Co gear this season includes leglengthening shorter blazers, sporty quilted jackets and car coats – featuring in-built weather-defense. Winter stars: the colours indigo, ox-blood and mustard. Chelsea boots and loafers are currently huge. The new Colombo Street store provides an ideal shopping experience. Staff are on hand to co-ordinate an entire outfit with several options. A perfectly smooth-torugged selection of shoes, boots, and loafers complete each look.

ATriumphant Return Maureen Taane is the head of a creative empire – more than 200 artists, craftspeople and businesses behind design store, HAPA. On the executive board of the Central City Business Association, she is a fierce advocate of the space that makes up our CBD. Metropol talks to Maureen about HAPA’s triumphant return to its central city roots. At the heart of HAPA is the desire to showcase local creative talent, how did you come up with the concept? I’ve been part of the local creative industry for more than two decades and in the aftermath of the earthquakes I was mourning the fact that we had lost many of our showcase spaces, galleries, retailers and exhibition spaces; yet another issue to overcome in the complex myriad of issues we all faced at that time. There was a palpable desire to ‘support local’ as Cantabrians understood that we needed to reach 22 July 5, 2018 Metropol
out to each other and the rest of the country looked for ways to support our recovering city. Showcasing local talent started out as a business case, a necessity and a personal passion. It’s now the core focus of our offering as we support more than 200 local businesses. Internationally the craft/local design movement and appreciation grows stronger as people react negatively to mass produced and imported goods and increasingly value handmade, handcrafted, and locally produced quality items. That is our HAPA happy place!
One of the early adopters of the Container Mall concept, how did it feel to take a leap and get on board with something so unique and innovative? I had a strong feeling it would be a success because we were all so desperate to reclaim the heart of our city after eight months of being locked out and there were numerous successful examples of this style of project internationally. It sure felt crazy to be building a colourful container mall in the dust and debris of the fallen CBD, under army cordon and in the shadow of buildings that were still to come down.
You’re on the executive board for the Central City Business Association, how important is the central city to you? I’ve been on the board since its inception more than 10 years ago, because I believe a strong central city heart benefits the wider city as a whole. I have lived in and worked in the CBD for more than two decades and our daughter went to school right here in the heart of the city too. It is indelibly etched in my heart as a tūrangawaewae. It’s an unprecedented time in the CBD right now – the changes are coming quickly as the retail precinct takes shape; workers are returning to the central city, new apartments are underway and Ao Tawhiti (Discovery Unlimited School) is returning… the buzz is building. It’s joyful and infectious!
Tell us about your new store open in the BNZ Centre? We opened on the 11th of May, with a beautiful, sustainable fitout by local duo Frontal Lobe! It’s wonderful to be back in the heart of the city, in the busy bustling space that is the BNZ Centre. We feel very lucky to have secured a space in this quality precinct with some of our Re:Start friends too (Scorpio Books, COSMIC and Simply NZ are our neighbour friends). We are also super lucky to be right opposite the most amazing café Little Brews Espresso – best coffee and banter in town! What’s the most fulfilling aspect of what you do? I feel immensely proud that we showcase beautiful, functional, well-made items that mostly have a very small footprint. One example is dear Keith Partridge who is in his 80s – a master craftsman who makes native wood products that he brings in while driving his electric car! Or the lovely Nadia from Shakey Smiles who makes a range of wonderful creatures from recycled woollen blankets. People love to see the maker’s mark and feel the warmth that exudes from items that are handmade, locally designed and a little bit different to mainstream gift ranges. I also design some products for HAPA that are only available instore, with a Te Reo Māori focus, in a push to ‘normalise’ Māori language in the retail gift environment.

The day Re:Start opened was the first time that the people of Christchurch were able to see what was left of the CBD and I’ll never forget it… 25,000 people came through that weekend. We felt a little bit like pioneers on a frontier… a tiny oasis in the middle of utter chaos. The Re:Start mall outlasted the critics and become a force in its own right; a destination for tourists and locals alike, and was eventually demolished in January 2018 to make way for the new Riverside Farmers Market.

ucky are the bride and groom who say “I do” to having the most memorable wedding, ever, in a glorious garden setting, with the backdrop of a working vineyard only enhancing the magic; add in the luxury of being pampered by attentive staff, dining on delectable fare and toasting their happy future together from the vineyards bountiful best in wines, and it’s no wonder the newly-weds can’t stop smiling. Winter weddings are plusher than plush in the Pinot Noir Room that boasts floor to ceiling windows and comfortably seats up to 200 guests. With a separate dance floor draped in fairy lights, and a quiet, intimate lounge and bridal room with ensuite for our besotted lovebirds to retreat to, should they want time out, it doesn’t come better than this. Jimmy also worked with other restaurant entrepreneurs, designing their refits in Christchurch, Queenstown and South Canterbury, including The Camden Restaurant and Bar in Riccarton Road’s Clyde Building. When choosing the central location for their new businesses, Alfred says he wanted to get away from what he saw as “vanilla mall culture” parts of Christchurch which had developed during the rebuild, instead yearning for a dynamic space back in the city that matched the vibrancy of the food. “We’d been offered a number of potential locations, but it wasn’t until we saw the vivacity of The Crossing that we felt that the timing was right for Cookai to return to the city, joined by an adjacent and energised Joyful Express,” he says. Cookai opens this week followed by the smaller neighbouring Joyful Express, opening in August 2018.

Diagonal dressing HAUS OF SONG
Some things in life are all about keeping on the straight and narrow. But this season, the beauty is in the asymmetry.
D
esigners are stepping outside of the sartorial box, working dramatic asymmetry into their creations and it’s not just about high-low dresses and diagonal hemlines. This year it’s all about hems that go sideways, hems cut in multiple jagged angles and high-low dresses with the longer side in the front because, the 2018 incarnation of this creative creationism is all about an unexpected silhouette. Meanwhile, we’re increasingly seeing asymmetrical necklines and mismatched earrings, as this fashion makes its way north. Australian designer Haus of Song (pictured) has balanced an asymmetrical skirt, asymmetrical lace top and mismatched earrings all together, creating a look that is effortlessly chic. After all, symmetry is overrated anyway.

Style Notes
1.
HOLIDAY S.O.S Headed off on a much-needed winter break? Try these tips to help steer you towards a stress-free packing experience.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Take one light suitcase Samsonite make the best ones. Weighing in around 2kg, you can get more in it without over-stepping the 23kg luggage limit of local airlines.
2.
Ditch the white White clothing is painfully limiting for travel. It can only be worn once and when you send it off for cleaning, the hotel or resort – yes, even 5 stars – will almost always return it looking grey.
4.
3.
Only pack enough outfits to force you to wear everything once Less is more when travelling. Less thinking, less decisions and less stuff. Work out how many outfits you have versus days. If you have fourteen looks for a seven-day holiday, halve this, then add three back in as evening options. This leaves ample options and ensures you wear everything. Remove clothes that need an iron The sound of the ironing board opening is uncomfortable enough at home. On holiday, it feels like nails on a blackboard. Pack 2-3 pairs of shoes max Shoes are weighty and cumbersome in the suitcase. Heels look silly in the islands. In the city, they become impractical when you are exploring your location. Reduce footwear options to a pair of dressy trainers, ballet flats or sandal and - if you must - a kitten heel for dinner. Bring two carry bags – total This means one large (but light) tote you can that pack down flat into a suitcase for extra shopping. Ensure it has a zip across the top to keep everything inside. The second bag should be a small, flat canvas over the shoulder bag with multiple pockets to keep you hands-free on the move. Wear a neutral coloured scarf on the plane – wool or cashmere (not acrylic!) Grey or sand tones will style with everything and not look too wintry on arrival. A warm, but light, scarf is also a blessing if the temperature drops.

Have a dedicated wallet on hand to house valuables Losing valuables on holiday is no joke. Keep them safe in a dedicated travel wallet and lock it in the safe before heading out. This will save you from leaving things lying around your hotel to be forgotten or stolen. Taking jewellery? Opt for light pieces only. Heading for the tropics? Take a small selection of easy-care kaftans you can wear day or night, but not so fussy they can’t stand exposure to sunscreen. Preferably in crease-free fabrics for easy washing and wear. “I’ll meet you by the pool, just as soon as I iron this kaftan” said no-one ever! Leave wiggle room in your case for shopping Even if you are travelling to a desert island, chances are you will find yourself raiding the spa of Pure Fiji products. So leave a little room to prevent that inevitable suitcase struggle on your final day. www.magpiestyle.co.nz

You’ve been incredibly successful. Why do you think people have connected with your designs? For me the measure of success is more about doing what I love and feeling fulfilled by my work – I am lucky enough to do my passion for a living so in that respect, I am blessed. I love creating beautiful unique jewellery that makes women feel fabulous and special. The women who wear our Kagi brand are always who we design for first and foremost and there is nothing more rewarding than seeing them enjoying our designs. I think women connect with our brand as we listen to them and design what they want – we don’t tell women what to wear, we listen to what they tell us. How would you define the Kagi brand? Kagi is about letting your own unique style shine. We are a brand that allows women to feel fabulous everyday.

Along with your firstborn (the business), you have a small human in your charge. How do you balance motherhood and a successful business? It’s a constant juggle and some days I feel as if I’m not winning and then other days are high fives all round! At the end of the day though we all do the best we can as working mums and need to cut ourselves some slack. The whole concept of ‘you can have it all!’ needs a wee subtitle added ‘but not at the same time...’ as we put so much pressure on ourselves to have every plate spinning perfectly at all times.
“I was very young to start up a business, but I guess that was the beauty of it.” What exciting plans do you have in the works for the next 12 months? Hahaha a break from having children! It will be nice to move out of nappies that’s for sure and recover two years’ worth of sleep! In terms of Kagi we are contining our Kat Gee collaboration and we have some very exciting new colourful and sparkly designs in the mix – it’s by far our best range yet and comes out early July. I still run my business remotely, so I’d say there will be some more travel in there and we have a couple of trips planned to Raro with the kids for some relaxation and recharging.

You were quite young when you established Kagi, where did your passion for jewellery come from? I have always had a passion for jewellery from a young girl fossicking through my grandma’s bead drawers to selling jewellery to classmates aged 7; a career in jewellery seemed inevitable. Looking back, I was very young to start up a business but I guess that was the beauty of it; I didn’t know what I didn’t know and literally felt like I had nothing to lose…

t the top end of Barbadoes street, Mondo Black stocks the professional-only haircare brand named NAK, which is manufactured in Australia and customised for Australasian weather conditions. Nak formulations include heat-protectants to keep tresses in peak condition. Salon owners Janeen and Ross say their staff are passionate about giving clients the exact colour and cut to suit their wants and needs. Most Mondo Black stylists have been trained in Australia as well as on site in Christchurch when a Nak product educator visits several times each year. Clients at Mondo Black are encouraged to show their stylist pictures from magazines or Instagram. For instance, when ‘going blonde’ there are so many variations a client might envisage, from gold, to cream, to grey blonde. Then, depending on which shade is selected, plus the texture and style of hair, a product for this will be stocked here to give the colour treatment longevity. Such colour masque products also work to renew the intensity of certain gorgeous highlights. And, because everyone’s crowning glory is unique, the products needed to nurture each client’s hair should be personalised also. That’s something at which Mondo Black stylists excel.

as botox and dysport injections, but also non-invasive laser face-lifting, and administering PRP (Platelet-RichPlasma).” The clinic has a great track record treating medical issues that may not be visible, but which negatively impact lives. Jenny says Transform’s clinicians have successfully laser-treated problems as wide-ranging as stress incontinence, vaginal atrophy, and snoring. A well-respected medical destination for two decades, Transform’s clinical work has made many people contented, Jenny says. “People come in with conditions or features which can make them very unhappy and leave our building smiling. Some of our clients who visited us in the 1990s continue to return to see us to this day,” she adds. Underpinning all of the medical and cosmetic procedures here is a strong, highly experienced professional team with a doctor, five registered nurses and two beauty therapists. Working in concert, they offer completely confidential expert advice and can treat “just about anything,” Jenny says. For instance, fungal skin infections in toenails are successfully dealt-to by laser technology. Or if skin spots could be moles requiring a health check prior to another procedure, Transform Clinic is a sensible choice. “We do mole
checking. We also remove moles, skin tags and other dermal lesions,” Jenny says. She’d love to get a message out to younger people to start their skincare regime early and to learn at a young age which sunblocks to use, and how to use them correctly. “Sunscreen creams are not all created equal. Also, application needs to be managed properly, so we educate people on this, as it’s the best preventer of sun-damage and disease within our influence.”
Jenny says the clinic nurses and therapists continue to offer free initial half-hour consultations, which is actually a great place to start for all types of health and appearance treatment advice. Transform clinic sees people of all ages and all skin conditions. The psychological side of such conditions is every bit as important, Jenny believes, and she loves seeing clients recover their good spirits in tandem with their physical transformations. good asgo Dress to impress is generally a figurative instructive to describe the art of dressing up. But injecting gold into your wardrobe is one way to pay a more literal homage to this sentiment, with our affections for this illustrious hue.
T
he golden child of fashion has been putting the Midas touch on our wardrobes for the longest of times and its prevailing popularity suggests that it’s here to stay. A signifier of wealth and quality, gold has been used in the arts from the gold artefacts found in the Balkans in the 4th millennium BC to the iconic Egyptian hieroglyphs. The shine hasn’t come off metallics for the 2018 sartorial season. A warm colour at face value, gold can also be considered a neutral, which means it makes the perfect partnership with just about anything. Outshine your sartorial rivals by incorporating gold in unexpected ways. Because, although the golden sheen of jewellery is almost a given, trousers, skirts, singlets and even puffer jackets take a bit more imagination. It takes only a few pieces to add a golden new dimension to your wardrobe.

T
im is the Clinical Director at the NZBRI and has been in this role since 2004 when the institute began. He was born in Christchurch and studied medicine at the University of Otago. Describing himself as “the black sheep of the family” (because his brother, father and grandfather were all radiologists), Tim became a neurologist, the branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. The NZBRI is the only independent brain research institution in New Zealand. It is also unique in that it is very patient-centred; “Rolls-Royce type care”, as Tim puts it. Patients are not charged. Based in a building near Christchurch Hospital, the NZBRI is a leading international star of research undertaken by 42 staff and senior students from all over the world. Nurturing emergent researchers is of particular importance and one of its former students Dr Campbell Le Heron, now a fully-fledged neurologist, has recently returned to work here from his post at the University of Oxford. Research at the institute covers Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s diseases; sleep-disorders, multiple sclerosis and stroke. A strong focus is on finding ways to predict who might be at risk of getting these and similar disorders, and ways to prevent them. This research has gathered international recognition.
Researchers at the NZBRI have just completed the world’s largest study of people with Parkinson’s looking at Alzheimer’s-like changes in the brain. They have also been undertaking one of the world’s largest Parkinson’s longitudinal studies, following the progression of changes in thinking and memory over 10 years. While the NZBRI does receive funding from the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation, Brain Research NZ, the Health Research Council of New Zealand and the Neurological Foundation of New Zealand (and has a support group called the Friends of the NZBRI), it receives no direct government funding. Research is expensive, not least because a lot of time is taken with each patient, and state of the art brain imaging with MRI and PET scans is costly. However, the outcomes of the research will be highly relevant to virtually every person in New Zealand and further afield. This research is well worth supporting and much more funding is needed. The NZBRI is a Registered Charity. If you would like to do your brain a favour and make a donation you can do so online at www.nzbri.org. Every donation counts. If you would like to make a major donation or leave a bequest please contact fiona@cmrf.org.nz. Metropol July 5, 2018 45

Breakfasts from 9am to 11:30am offer sumptuous specialities fit for a king. The Eggs Kiwiana is the classic Benedict with Route 72’s special twist – poached freerange eggs, kumara rosti, spinach, creamy mushrooms on wholesome seeduction bread with tarragon hollandaise, with a choice of smoked salmon or bacon. There’s light fluffy pancakes through to the extra filling farmer’s full-cooked breakfast and tender juicy steak with all the trimmings. There are plenty of equally delectable vegetarian and gluten-free options too. The café offers a gorgeous setting in the winter with a toasty fire in the café’s downstairs dining area and the upstairs seating offers vistas over the snow-capped mountains. A bonus of dining here for breakfast, lunch, dinner, tasty snacks or great organic coffee, is the Aladdin’s cave of tempting treasures. cookie-cutter wedding Avoid a
By Melinda Collins
Let’s be honest, from the minute we say ‘I do’, our heads are stuck in bridal magazines and we’re hunting out inspiration from wherever we can glean it. But amongst all the Pinterest and Instagramming, how do you create that one of a kind vibe? After all, your big day should never be a one size fits all affair.
T
oday’s most memorable weddings are becoming less about the 6-tiered wedding cakes, expensive floral arrangements and guest lists the length of your arm. Today it is all about a wedding that is unique, personal and reflects who you are as a couple. We’ve got all the inspiration you need to be a trendsetter not a copycat.
Personalised vows A sure fire way to ensure no other ceremony will be quite like yours, while making it special and intimate, is writing your own vows. However, reciting the tried and true doesn’t automatically doom you to a ‘basic’ big day after all, mixing the modern with the classic is a clever way to create matrimonial magic.
Be a storyteller Where did you meet? How did your partner propose? What do you both enjoy doing in your spare time? You can’t get more authentic than telling your story through your theming. Incorporating things which are meaningful to you will be fun and all it takes is one single object, memory or emotion to get the creative ball rolling.
Careful curation Many venues offer package deals and, while this is certainly a saving in time and effort, it’s also a saving in personalisation because, the more freedom you have to select your vendors, the more unique your big day will naturally be. Research your venues thoroughly to ensure you’re not tied into specific vendors before you sign on the dotted line.

Powerful playlist Think outside of the box when it comes to your playlist, after all how many first dances have been done to John Legend’s All of Me? Pick a playlist that truly speaks to you. Warning: this could take some time, but your efforts will totally pay off! Culinary creativity Much like your playlist, your menu should reflect who you are. A five-course silver service is always going to be out of place for a beers and BBQ kind of couple. Think there’s no place for beers and a BBQ on your big day? Think again. Much like Converse shoes or gummies tucked under a wedding dress, it’s about making it your own. And anyway, you’re not here to please anyone else but yourself – and perhaps your other half.
Going bespoke is a lovely tribute to a special relationship.
I
t’s inherently romantic to seek out your own symbolic sparkle mixed with gorgeous gold, silver or platinum. In fact, deciding on an engagement ring, wedding rings, or other special occasion jewellery is one of life’s most delightful times. A family-owned Christchurch business since 1996, Via Sollertia of New Regent Street is a family of young inspired designers who welcome client input. For those who want to buy on the spot, a tempting display of handcrafted beauties – both vintage and modern – awaits. It’s not necessarily more expensive, but definitely more exciting to help in the initial design, stone selection and perfect-fit of your own rings. Via Sollertia Manager Joel says some clients opt to bring them old or inherited pieces for a remodel into something intimate and exclusive, to love now.
Fashionable feminine locks V For Hair and Beauty Merivale has specialists in the team for whom balayage and ombre is their passion; creating beautiful fashionable, feminine looks for their clients.

he free-hand application allows them to achieve a more natural and modern effect with subtle transitions between the chosen hues, whether blonde, brunette, red or the latest pastlefier colours. You can amplify the hue to vary from a soft wash to bright and bold depending on your personal preference. When balayage or ombre grows out, the demarcation line between the roots and the coloured strands is not noticeable when
done by a trained expert. Outside of very short cropped hair, it can work on a variety of hair lengths, textures and colours, making it truly universal and flattering for all women. Nothing helps to stay looking current as a modern hair colour and a trendy cut. The balayage or ombre look is deservedly considered the hottest customised hair colour solution of today.

uilt in 1856 as the residence for the landowner of the entire suburb of Ilam, the homestead subsequently became part of the University of Canterbury. It was a residence for university officials and later on, an exclusive staff club. Its true potential is now realised following the launch of Ilam Homestead Functions Centre in April 2017. This is one of those glorious houses where, if the skies opened on your big day, it wouldn’t matter in the least. Carved antiques, expansively-proportioned windows and ornate fireplaces provide the artistic background, not to mention gracious outdoor porch-verandas and lush gardens. Following the 2010 and 2011 quakes, the homestead was extensively remediated. Thankfully, refurbishment has trodden lightly on the past. It’s now a beautiful venue for weddings; a choice which means photography doesn’t need to happen elsewhere. Homestead General Manager Jamie Costelloe is well used to hosting both larger weddings and more intimate cocktail-style gatherings here. Canterbury’s best catering partners are employed, meaning there’s plenty of choice in inspired and creative food to suit any occasion. The whole house can be hired, or part thereof, and differently sized rooms allow for plenty of big-day options. See www.ilamhomestead.co.nz.
cuisine Creamy Butternut Squash Soup With blue cheese & thyme Nothing soothes the soul and fills the tummy quite like a soup in winter. Here’s one of our favourites.
Ingredients:
Method:
6 cups peeled, seeded and diced butternut squash 1/4 cup olive oil 1 tbs salt 1 tsp freshly ground pepper 3 tbs butter 3 cups chopped onions 1/2 cup chopped carrots 1 clove crushed garlic 1 or 2 sprigs fresh thyme 4 cups chicken stock 4 cups water Blue cheese to taste Crème Fraîche, for garnish Pumpking kernels, for garnish
Preheat oven to 230°C. Line a rimmed baking tray with baking paper. Toss squash in a bowl with olive oil, 1 tsp of the salt and 1/2 tsp of the pepper. Transfer squash to the baking tray and roast until lightly caramelised and tender. Set aside. While the squash is roasting, melt the butter over medium heat. Add veges, 2 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp pepper to pot. Cook until soft. Add stock and water. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat, then simmer for 15 minutes. Add the roasted squash to the pot and remove it from heat. Discard the thyme sprigs. Blend the soup until completely smooth. Serve hot, garnished with crème fraiche, crumbled blue cheese and pumpkin kernels, with toasted and buttered crusty bread.

Can you tell us about your career evolution and what you’re up to now? I have worked in hospitality since I was 18 and been cooking for the last 16 years, starting off as a kitchen hand and working my way up to head chef. In April I was offered a fantastic opportunity to be kitchen manager with the team at Louis and soon to open You Hanoi Me. What are some of the exciting offers on the menu at the moment? We’ve just released our new winter menu to great response. A clear stand-out favourite dish would be the butter poached lobster, braised pork cheek and celeriac. Also our ocean plate is another dish that is proving to be popular; it gives our customers a chance to try scallops, bluff oysters, tuna and market fresh fish all as a tasting entrée.
Delicious Offerings Louis Champagne and Oyster Bar is one of the city’s most delicious offerings. Metropol talks to Kitchen Manager, Lawrence Harvey, about his culinary passion and what’s cooking at this hospitality hotspot.
What is the most enjoying or fulfilling part of what you do? I love cooking for so many reasons; the process of making and creating food; turning raw ingredients into something special that brings people together. The people. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some unique individuals; in this setting you form bonds and relationships which are hard to explain especially if you haven’t been subjected to stressful kitchen life. Chef life can be tough, it’s not for everyone, but for those who fall in love with the profession, it’s a lifelong relationship. That’s me. What does the next 12 months have in store for you? It’s going to be a busy 12 months. Josh Emett is an ex-Master Chef judge and owner of a number of restaurants – Rata, Ostro, five Madam Woo restaurants and the latest, Hawker & Roll. His chosen charity is Melanoma New Zealand, in memory of his late father, who sadly passed away from this six years ago. Founder of Eat My Lunch, and previous owner of Merediths, in Auckland, Michael Meredith has chosen to support the Fred Hollows Foundation, an organisation aiming to eliminate avoidable blindness through training doctors and nurses, strengthening health systems and driving innovation and research. Michael has personal experience dealing with blindness, after living with someone in Samoa with cataracts. He believes sight is an important part of our everyday existence and he is thrilled to support Fred Hollows’ incredible work giving people in the Pacific nations their sight back. Peter Gordon is the author of ten cookbooks, owner of Bellota, The Sugar Club, plus renowned restaurant Providores, in London. Peter’s chosen charity is The New Zealand LAM (lymphangioleiomyomatosis) Charitable Trust, who supports research of, and women with this rare lung disease. Peter has a long history supporting The LAM Charitable Trust, as a close friend of this suffers from the disease. He has cooked for a number of fundraising events and he is thrilled to be supporting them again through Chefs for Good.

project that will support a range of New Zealand charities, ‘Chefs for Good’ will see a line-up of iconic Kiwi chefs collaborate with The Collective to create their own gourmet probiotic yoghurts. Being sold nationwide with proceeds going to the charity of each chef’s choice, the charitable initiative is a celebration of The Collective’s own chef heritage and a way to give back to local communities. The Collective was co-founded nearly nine years ago by chefs Angus Allan & Ofer Shenhav. “We believe everyone deserves great food, so we’re stoked to now be working with some amazing chefs with the same passion and desire to help our communities through food,” Angus says. “Taste has always been paramount, so it’s been very cool to see the unique flavour combos they have come up with. It’s both inspiring and humbling that chefs we admire have been so enthusiastic about this project and keen to get involved, offering their time for free.” Al Brown is the owner of Depot, Federal Street Deli and Best Ugly Bagels, a TV presenter and a bestselling cookbook author. His chosen charity Garden to Table aims to change the way Kiwi kids think about food, by teaching them how to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh, seasonal food. Having grown up on a farm, Al is proud to have lived off the land for the first part of his life and has been an ambassador for Garden to Table since 2012.

What comes to your mind upon hearing the word ‘Opera’? Most will think of opera as the performing arts. Some will visualise the Sydney Opera House. However, many regular customers of Patisserie Yahagi, at Church Corner Mall in Upper Riccarton, will imagine the Opera Cake.

T
he Opera Cake is a French cake named after the Opera House in Paris. It is made with layers of almond sponge cake soaked in coffee syrup, layered with chocolate ganache and coffee buttercream, and covered in a chocolate glaze. Unfortunately, when Eri Yahagi, the owner of Patisserie Yahagi, opened her shop in 2009, Opera Cakes were not well-known because only a few shops sold them in Christchurch. So, when Eri first began to sell her beautiful Opera Cakes in her shop, she explains that many customers asked her if it was a tiramisu, to which she has always responded with a smile, “No. This is Opera. It’s not an Italian cake but a French cake. You must try it, once.” Fast forward seven years and the only question that her customers ask is, “Can I have your award-winning Opera?” Her exquisite Opera even won the Gold Award, winning in the Café Dessert Section of New Zealand Bakery of the Year in 2010 – and they can easily be enjoyed along with other awardwinning cakes that await at Patisserie Yahagi. If cake lovers have never tried Patisserie Yahagi’s Opera Cake, they have been missing out on a great opportunity to step into the Christchurch Opera House!

A culinary destination
It feels like yesterday that it opened, but Café Berlin is fast approaching its third anniversary. During these three years, the deli and coffee shop in Normans Road has built up a top reputation for its German sausages, smallgoods and cakes, attracting migrants and locals, as well as tourists longing for familiar treats.
W
hile Currywurst, Sauerkraut, meatballs, Beesting and Black Forest Gateau have always been bestsellers, the café has over time become a soughtafter place for European cheeses. Due to customer demand owner Anneke Molly has increased her offerings from two to nearly twenty kinds of cheese from the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Denmark and Italy.
While she makes it clear that the typical German goods will remain a priority, she now promotes her shop as a destination for cheese lovers. The main reason for this is the impending closure of the famous Canterbury Cheesemongers at the Arts Centre. “It is a pity that they are closing as they are such an iconic institution in our city,” Molly says. “But the end of their trading is not the end of European cheeses in Christchurch.
We are an alternative and we intend to get more and more cheeses in. If someone asks for a certain cheese, I can provide it. We will also try to offer English cheeses soon.” Anneke’s personal favourites are the mild Fol Epi and the Gouda with walnuts. “This Gouda is particularly tasty in winter, cut into cubes with a glass of red wine.” No bread needed, it is pure cheese indulgence.

cuisine Where did your passion for food come from? From a young age, my parents both cooked; we always ended up with interesting stuff in our school lunches. They had friends in the hospitality industry, so I got to see into kitchens, which turned me on. Food is inspiring really; I’m like a kid in a candy store and that’s naturally evolved from a young age. Why do you think the country has connected with you and what you do? I dislike the word ‘celebrity chef’ intensely. I’m like any another chef out there. I never thought I’d be on TV, had no burning desire to do it. Once you get on the box people see what you’re like, see the real you. Someone said to me once, the most important thing about doing TV is to remember your mates will see it. They know what you’re like, so be yourself. I’m myself on TV; it’s not an acting role. You just do what you do – some people will like it, some people won’t. Last year was pretty busy for you, with a three-part doco on obesity and a new restaurant Giraffe on Auckland’s Viaduct. What does the next 12 months have in store for you? I’ve become pretty passionate about the health sector and helping people like me really – people who are overweight and struggling with
it. The documentary ‘Why Are We Fat’ helped a lot of people. I get emails from around the world saying it changed their lives. People come up to me in the restaurant in tears saying, ‘you don’t know what you’ve done for me’. That inspires me to help more people. I have the ability to make an impact – we’re the third fattest nation in the world. What is the winning recipe for a great dining establishment? Family – that sums it up really. All our people that work in the restaurant are our family. We spend a lot of time there, so it’s about enjoying it, being a family. We employ people who are fun and love what they do. If we can have that family environment, that rubs off on customers; they feel it. Obviously you need the other things – best produce and cooked well – but without family you’ve got nothing. Heading into winter, what are some of your go-to comfort meals? It’s pretty hard to beat a casserole in winter – Moroccan lamb casserole or beef casserole; they’re hearty and delicious and will fill you up in winter. What’s the most fulfilling aspect of what you do? Spending time with my daughter, nothing beats that

The real beef and cheese and the pepper beef are popular with the hard-working regulars that are known by name here. There are pies and quiches too in the freezer to take home for tea. The latest addition to the pie warmer is handmade savouries, previously only for their catering customers. Pete and Kayla make an amazing Vivace coffee, with dairyfree options including velvety almond milk, coconut, rice and soy. A real mix of customers, from workmen to office locals, come
from Prebbleton and beyond for the fast and friendly service. Office shouts of lunches and morning teas are a speciality. Sandwiches are made with a larger McKenzie loaf slice, and bacon and egg paninis are breakfast heaven. There’s raspberry and white chocolate and blueberry muffins that are ‘chock full’ – JoAnne promises they won’t disappoint. “I enjoy taking pride in what I make.” Gorgeous Food, 66 Springs Road, has the cabinets full for a 6am opening Monday to Friday, until 3:30pm. cheesecake brownie Raspberries, chocolate, cheesecake and brownie are some of the best things in life, so why not put them all together for a decadent winter treat?
Makes about 24 brownies
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Lightly grease a 9x13inch baking pan. Brownie batter: In a large saucepan, melt the butter, then stir in the sugar, cooking until the mixture is smooth and shiny. Remove from the heat and stir in the cocoa, salt, baking powder, powdered coffee powder and vanilla. Allow to cool for about five minutes. Whisk in the eggs, then the flour, stirring until smooth. Cream cheese batter: Beat the room temperature cream cheese until it is completely smooth and there are no lumps. Mix in the sugar and flour, then the vanilla, cream and eggs. Next fold the chocolate chips into the brownie batter and spoon half the brownie batter into the prepared pan. Add the cream cheese batter to the top of the brownie batter. Whip up the raspberry coulis by placing raspberries, caster sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice (no more than 1 tsp) into a bowl and beating with a hand blender. Place the coulis on top of the cream cheese batter, then add the remaining brownie batter onto the cream cheese, swirling these together. Bake the brownies for 35 to 45 minutes, until a toothpick or knife inserted into the centre comes out clean and the edges are set. Remove the tray from the oven and loosen the edges with a knife. Cool completely before cutting. Can be frozen and added to the lunchbox as needed. Freezing this decadent slice may, after all, be the only way it will last more than one meal!

home Creating Serene Spaces The busier our lives get, the more important it is to make your home a place of retreat, somewhere you can recharge at the end of a long day.
Here are our top tips to create a home that is both serene and beautiful.
1.
Colour me calm: Little has such a dramatic effect on human emotion as colour. White’s calming capabilities make it a great wall option, with soft but uplifting colours best suited to accessories.
2.
Quality counts: When it comes to your most well-used items, such as your bed and couch, quality counts. Well-performing furniture will create a comforting space.
3.
LINEN HOUSE
Feng Shui following: If your home isn’t as restorative as it should be, it may be time for the ancient art of arranging our living spaces to come into play.
4.
Great greenery: Greenery is one of the easiest ways to breathe life into internal spaces – both figuratively and literally, with their ability to clean the air of pollutants and provide fresh air for concealed areas.
5.
Cut the clutter: Tackling clutter can be overwhelming. Break it down into manageable projects, such as one room at a time.

Blushing Beauty

relaxing, peaceful colour, it makes the perfect partnership with shades of grey, while a pale blush champagne can complement metallic highlights and contrasts perfectly against a white wall. This heavenly hue isn’t just for the ladies, in fact, pair it with black or charcoals and it can pack a powerful punch. But perhaps the best part of this colour crush is that it looks elegant, sophisticated and simply timeless paired with other neutrals. Don’t want to take the plunge with statement furniture? Add pops of colour with tableware or an artwork. Some sweet accessories for on the coffee table, a new print for on the wall or some new cushions for on the bed can add an elegant touch to a room. set up the company 10 years ago after working in London for a few years,” owner Johnny Gardner says. “I wanted to provide a service for clients that covered a range of trades all under one roof, all working to the same consistently high standards of workmanship and timeliness.” High standards and attention to detail are at its heart, as are comprehensive systems and planning. This enables the team to provide quality practice and service for every job, no matter how big or small. With 25 qualified tradesmen, Inline Plumbing can handle every aspect of plumbing for a new build or help with a wide range of repairs and maintenance, from blocked drains and
roofing repairs to hot water cylinder replacement. It offers solutions for all drainlaying needs and can provide gas hot water conversions and install gas appliances. A dedicated team manages all the bathroom laundry and kitchen renovations; a full floor to ceiling renovation service with fast turnaround and exemplary quality. “Our service begins with meeting the client at their property and completing a thorough design and quote process. From there we manage the project until completion.” Inline Plumbing is so serious about its bathroom renovation programme that it has a dedicated Bathroom Manager – Sarah Driver – whose product knowledge is second to none.

Pool Preparation Julie and Warren Hastings supply one of the world’s largest manufacturers of composite fibreglass swimming pools – Leisure Pools – to homes in Canterbury and wider South Island.
eisure Pools incorporate patented technology to provide additional strength and durability, using corrosive resistant, 100 percent vinyl ester resin, ensuring the pool is kept safe, secure and free of damage; and a lifetime structural and osmosis warranty for peace of mind. Julie says although it’s the middle of winter, now is the ideal time to think about getting a pool installed for the summer. “Our busiest time is from September onwards as people usually want their pool in by Christmas, so winter installs allow for a no-rush, stress-free time.” From large pools 12m in length, to sizes perfect for smaller sections, Julie and Warren of Lagoon Pools can assist with every stage of the planning and installation. Council consents generally take at least 20 working days to secure, and planning and landscaping can take time, so it makes sense to get the process started as soon as possible. From Elite hideaway rollers, automatic cover systems, pool surrounds and fencing, to fountains, strip lighting and spa jets – as well as swim trainers and robot pool cleaners – the business offers the full package. “We never say no to anything and spend time with every customer to work out exactly what they want.” Visit www.leisurepools.co.nz for more information about the pools and www.lagoonpools.co.nz. “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” WINSTON CHURCHI LL
One of my personal missions is to live an authentic life. I always try to measure this by my own yardstick, not that of others, and to do that I’ve had to counter something that challenges all of us at some time or another – fear, especially the fear of failure. More than anything else, this can be the biggest hurdle to achieving the things that you most want, whether professionally or personally. Winston Churchill said: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts,” and he was right. I’m noticing the relevance of these words in a professional capacity as the market takes on its winter coat. Auction clearance rates edge back and people enter, then exit, the industry, shocked that it’s not as ‘easy’ as they thought it would be. What were their expectations? Careers are built, not pulled out of a hat, and there’s more hard work than magic as you come to grips with the requirements of balancing the often diametrically opposed agendas of buyers and sellers. It’s not a failure to miss a listing, find out a buyer has purchased from someone else or have an auction not sell on the day. It’s life, a reminder of things you could have or should have done or, as is often the case at the moment, it’s a reflection of
HERE’S A FEW TIPS FOR THOSE OF YOU SELLING YOUR HOME IN WINTER
the market and how you personally adapt and engage with it. I’m not proffering excuses, I’m just encouraging an objective viewpoint where you learn from rather than repeat failures. I’ve had massive failures. One of the biggest of these helped develop my character and my resilience, although at the time I thought the world was ending. Having come to the end of my nursing studies and sat my final exams, I failed my surgical paper, one of three papers that made up our assessment. It was a shock and although highly disappointed I had the opportunity to re-sit the paper six months later. The position I had been offered as a staff nurse was put on hold and I was able to keep working at the hospital as I studied hard and prepared to re-sit the required paper. The day came, and then I awaited the results – confidently. Too confidently, it seems, because I failed the paper again! All patience from my employer was gone and on December 20 I was paid for the last time and told that if I should re-sit the paper again they might reconsider me. Three-and-a-half years of work and joy gone, self-esteem in my boots, and friends still at the hospital who didn’t know what to say.
It was a difficult time and that’s putting it lightly. I was unemployed, had a mortgage and I’d been married for six months. I found work nurse-aiding, delivering cookies and basically doing anything I could. This went on for a year, during which time I finally passed the paper I needed – and also got over my own sense of deep disappointment. I returned to the hospital and enjoyed nine years as a senior staff nurse, loving my time there. Then one day I decided to change direction and made the move into real estate. That was 24 years ago. The exam failure helped me look at the world and my part in it differently. It made me less bulletproof, whilst leaving me more confident to try new things. Great things, mad things, everything. Be brave with your choices and decisions. Failure isn’t the end, it’s the start or, at worst, a kink in the road. Travel well.

1. Clean Up the Garden. Rake dead leaves and debris from your lawn. Prune bushes and trees to let the sun inside. Plant yellow chrysanthemums or marigolds in pots, it’s a good home selling colour.
2. Set the Mood. Put a tray of cinnamon sticks on the counter. Open a cookbook to a Winter stew. Fill a bowl with crisp red apples. Toss a quilt or warm-coloured throw over a chair. Clear away clutter.
3. Dress the Windows. Rain and wind can make your windows dusty and streaked in Winter. You might not notice smudges, but buyers will, if only on a subconscious level. To sell a home, your windows need to sparkle.
4. Above all, bring in the light. When days get shorter, the sun sets lower and casts wider shadows. Pull up the blinds open the shutters and turn on the lights for a welcoming look.

Louvres
Adding a louvre roof to your existing home or new build in the middle of winter is the perfect timing to protect you from the winter elements and to be ready for the summer months.
“T
he weather may be considerably cooler at this time of year but a customised, automated louvre roof over a patio, spa pool, or deck, or as a freestanding feature anywhere on a property, provides a space sheltered from the elements,” says Craig Rogers, owner of Canterbury-based company, Louvre Solutions. “There are often fine, crisp days in winter when it would be great to be outside and the protection of a louvre roof can make doing that so much more appealing, especially with our integrated heating and side screens.” During the warmer months, louvre roofs are equally beneficial, making them structures for all seasons. Craig has significant experience in the architectural louvre industry and knows the benefits of his company’s products.
Quality is paramount too over the range of products, which, as well as motorised opening louvre roofs, also includes elliptical sun louvres, privacy and security screens, gates, fences, chimney cowls, cedar louvres and vertical sun shades – all the company’s louvre roofs come with a ten-year warranty. With more than ten years in the industry, Louvre Solutions’ reputation has been built on a solid foundation. Testament to this is the positive feedback from clients and a robust network of contacts including independent builders, building companies, architects and landscape architects, all of whom recommend the company to potential clients. “I work with our clients throughout the entire process for every project, from design to manufacturing and installation. This relationship is very important to Louvre Solutions. I know what works and
what doesn’t, both from a practical and aesthetic perspective and attending to any adjustment needs that may follow is all part of our service,” says Craig. The custom-made louvre roof product, with bespoke features like powder coated colouring tailored to the client’s needs, can be included in a new build and/or retrofitted to an existing home. Many louvre-roof installations are taking place now, not only to take advantage of the benefits they offer during winter months, but also to be well-prepared for summer. While Louvre Solutions’ headquarters and factory are based in the heart of Canterbury, the company has agents throughout the South Island based in Timaru, Wanaka, Nelson, Marlborough and Queenstown. JE NE SAIS QUOI JD&A Design Furniture is a vibrant young bespoke furniture design and build company creating furniture concepts you won’t find anywhere else. The style could be broadly classed as industrial/contemporary, but the pieces come with such inherent elegance they harmonise with any setting.
H
ow is that possible? Well mes amis, it all becomes clear when you discover the JD&A Design Furniture owners and directors are French born and raised. Alizée Cadart and Jerome Delage bring their French je ne sais quoi and that means low tolerance for the nonaesthetically pleasing, an instinct for detail, understanding fine finish, proportion and a lightness that belies intrinsic strength. “We are perfectionists and won’t put a piece out until it is flawless,” Alizée says. Doing the design and construction themselves, both love to work with their hands and have come to furniture design through creative training and careers in fashion, pastry cheffing and photography. Everything is made to measure and completely unique – they never repeat a design, choosing to begin the creative process from scratch for every commission. Inspired by life experiences and a love of nature, their pieces transcend the ordinary:
earth bound and industrial yet with organic flights of fancy expressed on surfaces. The patina on one table displayed in the showroom is otherworldly, a Rorschach pattern on which to project your visions, or be led to an illusory realm.
Inspired by life experiences and a love of nature, their pieces transcend the ordinary They work using metal framing, with tops in reclaimed and new wood, glass, or a variety of metals such copper and brass. Visually striking, the pieces can stand alone as architectural forms or showstopping objets d’art, but they are of course made to be
used. The classic proportions and deft use of materials means they assimilate easily with other pieces you might own. Recent projects have been varied and they love a challenge. They do commercial and resident work, recently creating tables and a counter for the new Cloudy Bay winery restaurant in Cromwell, as well as a built-in wine rack, and dining and coffee tables for a private client. Alizée and Jerome will come to your site to work with you on your ideas, plus suitable timeframes. Their plan is to stay small to continue their approach of liaising closely with clients through the design, build and possible installation process. The brand-new showroom at 419 Tuam Street is almost complete and open every day from 9am to 6pm, or by arrangement: living and breathing their craft as they do, it won’t come as any surprise that Alizée and Jerome live above their showroom and workshop. When it comes to building, experience counts. So does a deep understanding of construction processes and what it takes to complete large projects on time and to the satisfaction of clients. G I Builders Ltd, run by Grant and Kelly Irving along with Quantity Surveyor Mark Shaw, has proven over the years since being established in 2008 that it has the capacity and expertise to handle complex residential builds – notably multi-unit projects.

“T
hese can be challenging jobs,” Grant says. “Many builders simply shy away from them because they present too many complications. We, on the other hand, thrive on resolving complications. We’ve definitely dealt with plenty of them in post-earthquake Christchurch with renovations, repairs, cash settlements, rebuilds and new builds.” G I Builders’ tight team is small enough to care, but big enough to deliver. And deliver it does. Several recent multi-unit projects are testament to that fact. Take the four very attractive two-storey conjoined townhouses now gracing Madras Street. With mono pitch roofs and clad in Rockcote and linear weather board, these architecturally-designed units, each with three bedrooms, took nine months to complete. “We find these types of projects really good to manage. They certainly require more resources – more of everything really – but we’re not overwhelmed by the size or by the timeframes that need to be adhered to.” In Andover Street, G I Builders took immense satisfaction in completing another similar project. “Because
you are dealing with a number of different homeowners in these builds, communication and maintaining a constant flow of information is vital. The owners may come from different backgrounds and have varying levels of understanding of building processes. This necessitates a very personal approach.” Grant explains that multi-unit dwellings should not look different from the outside in terms of colours for walls and roofing. “To deal with this situation we meet with all the clients, show them alternatives and work with them to reach a common agreement. The interiors of the units can of course be customised to suit individual tastes for colours and textures.” A slightly different multi-unit build on Browns Road required ground remediation before the foundations could be laid. “We liaised with both structural and geotechnical engineers on this two-unit project. Since the earthquakes we have become pretty specialised in various foundation systems. Of our three recent multi-unit builds each one has had a different type of foundation.” The team at G I Builders say the company’s strength lies in the staff’s experience and ability to combine expertise to brainstorm over any issues that may arise. “We have a ‘can-do’ attitude and don’t give up if things seem too hard. The last seven years have taught us a great deal and we have all that skill and knowledge to bring to our work.” Contact G I Builders for more information at www.gibuilders.co.nz.

H
e counts himself lucky that his charitable dreams have borne fruit. The results have been a boon to many Christchurch people, many who’ve become close friends over the ensuing years. In short, the Kenneth F. Weaver Trust Incorporated has securely and comfortably housed many older city residents who’ve found themselves in genuine housing need. Set up in the mid-‘70s, the charitable trust today owns and operates 29 quality, spacious rental units which are eminently affordable as a result of their charitable status. Tenants pay a rental which represents a great reduction from comparative market rates. Another huge boon for tenants is that their housing is secure; a home for life. Generally they vacate only if needing resthome care or similar. In order to qualify for one of these units in one of their four Christchurch locations, applicants must be aged over 60, have less than $25,000 in cash, and be truly needy of good accommodation. “For whatever reason, people can be hard-working and yet remain in positions of hardship,” Kenneth says. He urges older people in such need to put their names onto the trust’s waiting list. Kenneth credits his ability to help people with the fact he managed to establish the Kenneth F Weaver Trust Inc. At the

time, this meant having viable architectural plans, and applying to both the city council and central government. The latter application was for funding. As a boy who’d left school in his mid-teens with no higher qualifications, it was a bold move. It paid off. “I recall taking my housing plans to the Housing Corporation architect and being asked who I was.” That first attempt wasn’t successful, but after a discussion Kenneth amended the plans and called back in a few days later. “I remember him saying ‘Not you again!’ So I said, ‘You have a look at these plans… there’s nothing wrong with them.’ Two days later I had a phone-call from the national Director of Housing who advised me to attach my endeavours to a church, for board governance purposes.” Kenneth acquiesced. The “long bureaucratic process” involved sending his building grant proposal to parliament’s Minister of Housing. “One night weeks later a reporter was standing at my door,” Kenneth says. “He’d heard a release in Wellington stating that Mr Kenneth F Weaver was the first individual ever to be offered such a government grant.” The rest is history. Beauty is somewhat of a subjective force and, while this means that some have an architectural preference for aged beauty and others fancy a more contemporary look, our newly developing city is proving to be a beautiful opportunity to showcase the best of both. Globally, few cities are built at such a rapid pace from the ground up with so little time allotted to their painstaking maturation and yet, despite this challenge – or perhaps even because of it – Christchurch continues to command attention on the global stage for its richly developing urban spaces. The metamorphosis of Christchurch’s commercial offering is palpable, measurable and impressive, with the thought that is going into seamlessly fusing the old with the new ensuring that our city remains visually interesting and inspiring at street level. However, the extent to which the commercial backbone of the recovering city can fulfil its architectural potential largely rests on the commercial shoulders of the identities spearheading the change in our built environment. The developers, the architects, the construction firms and the individuals behind them that are heading this exciting new architectural era should all take the opportunity to pat themselves on the back. In the interim, the judges of the NZIA’s Canterbury Architectural Awards have gone some way towards this, recognising both the old and the new in this year’s winner’s list. And, from the Metropol team, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your dedication to our emerging city. Christchurch has never looked so good.

iving in Christchurch should offer an experience comparable to other major cities and that which is expected of the second largest city in NZ. That’s why we need to commit to building a multi-use stadium. The economic and social benefits of a vibrant sporting and contemporary events calendar are considerable, as evidenced in Dunedin by Ed Sheeran: sixty thousand visitors over a weekend, with an estimated $34m of economic benefit. The benefits would be even greater if the stadium was capable of hosting both high-profile sports events and concerts, trade shows and other major events. That’s why it needs a roof, as its location in the residential East Frame and modern noise standards, combined with the harsh Canterbury winters, mean its viability as a multi-use facility is limited if it is not enclosed. The vibrancy of the new central city is starting to develop. We have amazing retail and hospitality developments including The Crossing, The Terraces, the soon-to-open Hoyt’s development and the city’s anchor tenant Ballantynes. New facilities such as the central library and the Margaret Mahy playground are strong reasons to visit the central city. Attracting people to visit is a must for businesses who have invested in the city and we need to support them. A new, covered, multi-use arena will take the city to a new level, not only by hosting events that will provide access to top notch sporting and cultural entertainment, but also by bringing people and economic activity from wider Canterbury and the greater South Island.
T
e Pae, the official name for the Christchurch Convention Centre, was recently unveiled at MEETINGS 2018, New Zealand’s largest business events tradeshow, in Auckland. The name is a unique yet simple way for domestic and international visitors to identify this premium, purpose-built convention and exhibition venue. We worked with local cultural advisers, Matapopore on a name that reflects not only what this facility is, but also what makes it different from any other. The term Te Pae references a gathering place but also has other fitting meanings. Te pae tangata means ‘the orator’s bench’. Given the design of the building has been heavily influenced by the local landscape, it’s particularly relevant that te pae maunga means ‘the view of the mountains’, and te pae whenua means ‘the view of the plains’. It is why simply calling the facility the “Christchurch Convention Centre” would have been underselling it in a globally competitive conventions and exhibitions market. As a central city landmark, on a specifically selected riverside site, supported by great hospitality or manaakitanga, Te Pae will be enjoyable and memorable. Accommodation, shops, bars, restaurants and parks are all a few steps away and, drive less than two hours in any direction from Christchurch, and you will find a scenic part of the South Island. Those of us who live here can sometimes take what’s on our doorstep for granted but, when you look at everything that makes this region special, you can see how Te Pae will offer delegates an experience like no other.

recently had the pleasure of attending a presentation from four millennials talking about social enterprises here in Christchurch. The future leaders were excited to share their findings with the baby boomers and gen Xers. After all, in their minds, social enterprise is a relatively new concept, largely driven by their generation. Those of us with laughter lines and natural ‘highlights’ in our hair openly questioned if it was a new concept, or just the re-labeling of an existing model? Currently there is no nationally agreed legal definition of what a social enterprise is. The Akina Foundation, the Governmentfunded entity charged with growing social enterprise, defines them as purposedriven originations that trade to deliver social and environmental impact. Akina also references that they use commercial methods to be financially self-sustained. Based on that definition, I’m sure we could all draft a list, including many larger long-established charities, that have developed commercial products to underwrite the social or environmental services they deliver. Christchurch has been informally recognised as a hotspot for social enterprise since the 2010/11 earthquakes. Last year we hosted the Social Enterprise World Forum because of this. I have certainly seen an increase in entities popping up that want to make a difference, largely driven by impressive younger talent. However, our own Kilmarnock Enterprises was established in 1958. I don’t believe social enterprise is a new concept. What we call it is largely immaterial; what is important is the amazing work they do and what can be achieved by taking this approach.

fter five weeks, our Red Zone Futures exhibition has ended and we are now assessing the feedback provided by everyone who visited the Cashel Mall site, engaged with our travelling exhibition and commented via the online exhibition. This information, as well as the findings of qualitative research carried out during the exhibition period, will inform our development of the draft Regeneration Plan for the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor. As the exhibition entered its final weeks, another of our projects reached a significant milestone. The release of our vision for Cathedral Square followed 18 months of design work, technical reports and engagement with Cathedral Square property owners, business groups, heritage groups, Ngāi Tūāhuriri, the public and other key stakeholders. We have appreciated the significant interest in our thinking for the square. But it’s not just about new things. To be regenerated, the square must return to its original purpose as a gathering place for local people and visitors. It needs to be a strong symbol of the vibrant future of the city centre. The vision, which will be delivered in stages as funding and other developments allow, is aspirational in terms of design. But we believe the social regeneration of the square is achievable sooner rather than later and should be prioritised by tidying the place up and making it a place for the people again. With that in mind, we will work with the city council on the development of a delivery strategy to support the private and public investment being made in the area.
P
rior to the devastating earthquake events of 2010/2011, the public generally didn’t know a geotechnical engineer from a civil engineer; with much of an engineer’s work often being hidden. Indeed, if it works and continues to do so, then an engineer’s work is often buried in the ground, or hidden behind building finishes, quietly doing its job. High demand saw increased competition with many firms coming into Canterbury, only to now be leaving as we begin the ongoing trend back to pre-earthquake construction levels. Which begs the question, where will the providers of this advice be when future questions are raised on post-earthquake designs and earthquake repairs? With so much achieved during the rebuild and so much still to be done, it’s important for clients to understand that seeking enduring, quality advice should always be balanced against the cost of acquiring it. Cost effective solutions are rarely the cheapest option. Engaging a well-established expert as your trusted advisor brings with it long term benefits that endure long after the bill for the alternative cheaper design would have been paid. A trusted advisor will seek to help the client find an enduring long-term solution with practical options, easily discussed because of your ongoing working relationship based on trust and good communication. Canterbury and beyond remains an active seismic area and earthquakes are a way of life for New Zealanders. Get the best advice by making sure your consultant is an expert and is willing to put the time in to become your trusted advisor.
O
ne of the priorities for me as the Minister for Greater Christchurch Regeneration is ensuring that we are well placed to learn from the Canterbury Earthquakes sequence going ahead. We know that there are valuable lessons to be learned from such an unprecedented event that will enable us to make sure our communities are more resilient and prepared in the future. It was a great pleasure to announce recently that there will be a two-day symposium held in November this year in conjunction with the Christchurch City Council. This symposium will also provide a platform to lead into a bigger international event that will mark the quake’s tenth anniversary in 2021. We anticipate the involvement of up to 250 participants from across the public and private sectors, representing those who have been involved in the local recovery, as well as those that may be impacted by future events. Crucially, the symposium and workshops will also give communities the chance to share their wisdom and experiences as those at the coalface of the recovery. Given New Zealand’s complex geography, we know that it’s merely a question of when and not if another community faces the same challenges. Our communities need to know that the disaster and recovery systems are effective and robust. The symposium will provide a unique opportunity for community leaders, recovery practitioners and academics to learn from what’s happened in the past and to make sure we get it right in the future.

chlorine! GOODBYE
Maxwell Plumbing is bringing back the clean taste and benefits of good old Christchurch water, consistent, fresh and pure – without the strong odour of chlorine.
W
ith Christchurch’s chlorinated water supply not going away any time soon, hands-on local owner
Stephen Whittaker has met the increasing customer demand to install quality water filters. It’s more affordable than most
people think. From between $700 and $1100 for a whole house water supply, dependent on work required to source and connect to the mains pipe, pure-tasting drinking water is easy. Water pressure is not affected, health conditions exacerbated by chlorine may get relief, and the hassle of buying and storing drinking water is gone. Alternatively, for around $450, a small filter can connect under the sink for the kitchen tap only. Stephen says filters in more modern homes with an isolating valve in the garage can be installed on internal garage walls, or on the outside or fence-lines of older homes. Relatively unobtrusive, they are nothing a bush wouldn’t hide. Experienced plumbers are best for the job and Maxwell Plumbing has 35 years knowledge in all sorts of situations. The Puretec or Trevoli cartridges use Chloraguard filters which only need replacing annually to remain effective in removing sediment, rust, dirt, bad taste and chlorine down to an undetectable one micron. Friendly service is fast – filters can be installed with as little as two days’ notice. Just phone Marion on 03-366 4403 or email marion@maxwellplumbing.co.nz. SuperGold Card members receive 10 percent discount – another reason to be, once again, able to turn on the tap and enjoy. Visit www.maxwellplumbing.co.nz.

oday’s apartments are designed to meet stringent building codes around engineering standards, structural integrity, acoustics and insulation. Ease of living, a ‘lock and leave’ mindset, plus the sense of safety and security of multiple residents in a complex are strong drawcards for city occupiers. In recent years there has been consistent growth in young KiwiSavers buying their ďŹ rst home, professional couples, single adults, semiretired buyers and investors looking to buy completed or o the plans inner-city apartments or townhouses. The recent completion of new apartment projects at 50 Kilmore, 194 Worcester and 282 Madras Streets replaced only 90 of the approximate 1200 inner-city multi-unit dwellings removed post-quake. We have just launched a very cool boutique project ‘Identity’ at 135 Kilmore Street adjacent to the refurnished Town Hall and Victoria Square. The 15 apartments have been crafted by Stufkens Chambers Architects to be attractive to the mix of owner-occupiers, KiwiSavers, investors and retirees, priced from $450,000 each, built over ďŹ ve levels with good city views. An onsite display and model is open Sunday 1:45 to 2:15 to view or by appointment. Launched late June, there are four under option already. Our inner city is a ourishing and exciting place to live. The simple lifestyle of apartment living was never a secret in the world, but in Christchurch the secret is out.

s the rebuilding city becomes a commercial playground for talented teams to create dynamic, contemporary designs, there are equally talented teams hard at work salvaging and strengthening what they can of our distinct built heritage. While some exciting new commercial builds usher in a new era of construction in the city, they are rubbing architectural shoulders with some equally grandiose identities. Both the old and the new have been recognised at this year’s NZIA Canterbury Architecture Awards, with large and complex public and commercial architectural projects, innovative buildings for learning and restored Christchurch landmarks among the winners. In total, 34 awards were announced at the Awards 2018 event at Christchurch’s Cardboard Cathedral.
The jury convenor for this year’s Canterbury awards, Christchurch architect Melanda Slemint, praised the ability of architects to produce buildings of beauty, which function well and contribute positively to their wider environment. “What really stood out is the way architects have been able to keep sight of the human scale, and the context within which the projects sit,” she says. “Christchurch is undergoing a period of identity change and some of the new projects speak eloquently about the quality of life we celebrate here. “The world’s best cities have a fine-grained rhythm that creates interest and variation and prevents streets and public spaces from being overwhelming. As post-quake Christchurch continues to develop, it is heartening to see that the city’s architects are attuned to the needs of people.” All Canterbury Architecture Award-winning projects are eligible for shortlisting in the New Zealand Architecture Awards. Those awards will be announced in November. For a full list of the winners visit www.nzia.co.nz.

ouncil has met to begin finalising its Long Term Plan (LTP) – the document that maps out the council’s work programme and priorities for the next 10 years and how it proposes to fund the works. More than 1500 groups and individuals made submissions on the draft LTP. In response to their feedback, the council is considering:
“We heard very clearly from the community that people want roads and footpaths repaired faster, so we’ve made changes that allow us to repair those in the worst condition sooner,” Mayor Lianne Dalziel says.
• Bringing forward $25 million in capital expenditure into the next three years to pay for work to ensure Christchurch’s drinking water is safe, secure and unchlorinated. The focus for the first year remains getting chlorine out of the drinking water
• Providing a $30 million loan facility to support the building of more social housing in the city
• Allocating an extra $16.8 million over the next three years for improving roads and footpaths, including intersections and school safety • Approve spending an extra $48 million over the next three years on improving the performance of the city’s wastewater network.
Additional recommendations include: • Bringing forward funding for the city’s planned new stadium by two years
• Supporting a range of initiatives in the community, for example Thompson Park, Linwood Pool, Edgeware Pool and additional opening hours for Matuku Takotako: Sumner Centre • Continuing the Landmark Heritage Grant for three years • Fast-tracking sections of the Quarryman’s Trail and Nor’West Arc cycleways, which will support a number of schools
• Extending the one-hour free parking offer in its central city car parking buildings until the end of January 2019 • Requesting the Development Forum develops a work programme to maintain momentum in the CBD, focusing on landbanking practices and incentives to develop inner-city residential properties • Continuing free swims for green prescription holders and preschoolers at council pools during school hours.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel is recommending council puts extra money into improving core infrastructure To fund this work, it is proposed rates increase by an average of 5.5 percent in the coming financial year (plus $6.52 per property for the special heritage Cathedral grant). This is about $2.80 more a week for a home with the average RV of $500,000.

wide range of cool boutique shops warrant some perusing time. Head into secondhand store London St Books for a dose of nostalgia, record store Spookie Boogie to find music, limited edition T-shirts and original art or drop by the Harbour Co-op – a community and staff-owned co-operative store that supports local, organic, fair trade and wholefoods producers. There’s also Sweet Thursday, which always has the most interesting window displays, while Henry Trading offers an ‘independent miniature department store’, right next door. Every Saturday from 10am to 1pm, London Street comes alive with food stalls, music and the bustle of people buying fresh produce or simply catching up with friends and enjoying a coffee or two. The market has a commitment to local food with more than a dozen stallholders from Lyttelton and a whole swathe from under 20 kilometres away. When it comes to portside eats, Lyttelton’s players are on top of their culinary game. Established in February in Norwich Quay, alongside Lyttelton’s busy
port, Super’s kitchen serves up fresh eats with a Japanese twist. From an unassuming two-storey building on the main street, Roots restaurant is turning out some of the best food in the country, its owners Giulio and Christy Sturla driven by a simple philosophy of serving good food using fresh, seasonal, organic ingredients.
There is plenty keeping this portside township ahead of the game Iconic hotspot Wunderbar – known for its quirky décor – has churned out some of the region’s most prodigious talents, including former local Marlon Williams who still makes the list amongst an extensive line-up of local artists and touring acts. Meanwhile, with an intimate, nostalgic vibe owing to its rustic fit out and location in a historic building that once
housed a tailor shop of the same name, Civil & Naval is another happening hangout. From its 1921 heritage building, the Lyttelton Coffee Company supplies beans to more than 30 cafés in the city, so it’s fair to say they know what they are doing when it comes to coffee. Harbourside views make it a beautiful spot for a brew. Cruise ships are one step closer to returning to Lyttelton Harbour, as construction begins on Lyttelton Port Company’s (LPC) cruise berth, which will be located between Cashin Quay and the entrance to the Inner Harbour. It will be the first custom-built cruise ship facility in New Zealand designed to accommodate the world’s largest cruise vessels. In preparation, the navigation channel is being widened by 20 metres and deepened to allow vessels with a 13.3 metre draft to call at Lyttelton. The channel deepening will not only allow bigger ships to access the Port, but it will provide Canterbury’s importers and exporters the best possible and mostcost effective international shipping solutions.

THINKING INSIDE THE SQUARE Regenerate Christchurch has released its vision for Cathedral Square, emphasising that a return to its original purpose as a gathering place for local people and visitors must be front and centre.
C
hief Executive Ivan Iafeta says while the vision for the physical regeneration of the Square is aspirational in terms of design, the social regeneration of the square is achievable sooner and should be prioritised. The design for the square includes a series of interconnected spaces suitable for public events, with a combination of paving and green areas and more trees than in the past. There is an option for three enclosed pavilions connected by
a lattice-style structure which Ivan says, would provide a year-round undercover area for markets and other activities. Ivan says the greater regeneration will need to be delivered in stages as funding and other developments allow, but delivering a comprehensive programme of events, activities and festivals will reestablish the square as a gathering place. “To be regenerated, the square cannot remain symbolic of the city’s loss and ’s experience instead needs to be a strong symbol of the vibrant future of the centre of our city. long-term vision will provide the impetus and drive for the public and private sectors to work toward a common goal. “But it’s not just about new things. It is about people and we need to get on with making the square a place for the people again.” Regenerate Christchurch’s longterm vision can be viewed at regeneratechristchurch.nz/cathedralsquare and the organisation will now work with Christchurch City Council to develop a delivery strategy.

he ABI Piers Adjustable Height Steel Pier is affordable, incredibly durable, easy to fit, and can be used in your home’s foundation. If any ground settlement or movement occurs, it can be adjusted back to the level it was before the latest shake. ABI Piers Director Chris Colenso says, “ABI Piers Adjustable Height Steel Pier bolts your house firmly to its foundations, is fast to install on new builds or easily retrofitted to existing houses, and makes it faster, easier and cheaper to put your house back to original level after the next quake. “With almost daily reports of dodgy repairs to a reported thousands of substandard house foundations in Christchurch, we think it’s time that proper, permanent foundation repairs are carried out before the value of the entire Christchurch second hand property market becomes infected by the scandal.” How does it improve on the

dodgy repairs that have become common around Christchurch? You first unbolt the pier sliders, jack the whole house back to level, then simply re-adjust the piers to the correct height and re-bolt them. Remove the jacks and your house is back to pre-earthquake condition. Faster repairs mean less disruption for the homeowner and lower overheads for the insurer/ EQC, therefore less arguments. The ABI Piers adjustable height steel pier was especially developed to enable owners of buildings with raised floors to repair their foundations “once and for all”. The system is fast to install and easy to adjust post-quake. It’s great for modular homes, cabins too, and works on all types of land, including TC3. ABI Piers are available in four standard heights and in configurations for various building styles, including ‘base isolation’. Visit www.abipiers.com to find out more.

“W
e love to work with all sorts of people – our clients and the locations inspire us and we never stop learning.” A project close to home has received an Architecture Award in this year’s NZIA Canterbury Architecture Awards programme. ‘Mount Pleasant House’ came with a demanding brief for a rebuild on a tricky wedge-shaped hillside section, which faces into the prevailing easterly wind. What emerged from the clever design team in consultation with its clients, is a contemporary family home featuring angled wings that embrace the sun, sea views and a central private garden courtyard. “A connection with the outdoors is paramount and this has happened with this house,” Wulf says. The eco-friendly design expresses natural cross ventilation, solar gain, natural light to every room, great privacy, protection from the prevailing wind and it blends well with the context of the
neighbourhood. Making beautiful buildings and creating happy clients is reward enough for Wulf and the team but, “this is a standout house and to receive the award is great,” he says. “It’s a tribute to working together – both in-house and with our clients. Plus T & D Builders were amazing to work with; they’ve done a fantastic job.” Hadley Morgan, Director of T & D Construction has a soft spot for Mount Pleasant House, having won a Silver Award for the home in the Master Builders’ House of the Year 2016 competition New Home $650,000-$1 million category. “The house utilises a lot of different materials and it provided a great opportunity for our team to complete some really nice finishing carpentry work,” Hadley says. “They did a brilliant job of that. “The 12-month build process was a great experience – working with Wulf and his team and owners Clara and John, who made the project a real pleasure.” Not Just Kitchens (NJK) was proud to be asked to manufacture and install the
custom-made joinery for this beautiful home. After a site meeting, NJK was left to manufacture and install the products in a short time frame, to meet the schedule. “These types of homes only come together when the trades people involved have the same vision for the house, and work together collectively to complete the project to the standard expected by the all of the parties,” says Not Just Kitchens Director Paul Campbell. “It was great to have their trust, and to show the flare of our team.”

esigned by Matt Barrett of Walker Architecture, it has been nominated for an Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ) Regional Award, in the Residential New Home Over 300 square metres category of the 2018 competition. The completely secluded site has its own lake and retains established trees. These magical surroundings flow indoors via decks which reach into the landscape. Raised well above its historical wetland setting, the house also features a generous stud height inside, but clever landscaping around the house means it nestles into its environs, rather than overpowering them. Matt says the great thing about this design was the “ability to focus on the details – the best details are the ones you don’t see”. Environmental sustainability and energy efficiency elements are a feature of the practice and the clients were very receptive and open to ideas. Matt says “it’s a series of tweaks, rather than construction overhaul,” to obtain increased energy efficiency and eco-credentials. Tweaks include robustly upscaled insulation, thermally broken windows recessed in line with the insulation rather than with the cladding, water storage and the use of natural materials such as cedar and stonework. Current projects – the rebuild of the Richmond Club, along with the Duncan Building rebuild and façade retention – might not form the shape of the cross as Hughes House does, but they will receive the Walker Architecture eye for detail and efficiency. Amen to that!
