ADVERTORIAL
TRUSTED & RECOGNISED One of the wonderful things about Harcourts Holmwood is that when you talk to our top achievers they understand it was not the result of their efforts alone but because of the support of their sellers and buyers who have trust in them. Our top sales consultant Chris Lewis commented, “the clients I have worked with this year have been such a delight it has been so great to share their journey, and to help them achieve their real estate dreams”. In many ways this has been such a glittering year for Harcourts Holmwood. Week after week our consultants share stories of their client’s success and how we as a company have helped make it possible. When one looks closely at the top twenty we see individuals who year on year have produced consistent results - a sure sign of client loyalty. Holmwood was thrilled that we also saw a number of newer consultants make their way into that elite group. Application and commitment were the trademarks of their success. It is a real credit to our new agents that all achieved top twenty status within such a short time of starting their real estate careers. An area of traditional strength for Holmwood has been its focus on auction success and therefore it is of little surprise 4 June 21, 2018 Metropol
to see such a strong correlation between our consultant’s commitment to the auction process and their clients’ individual success. A quick look at the statistics would illustrate how successfully the auction process has been for our clients. That winning belief is an immutable part of the Holmwood culture. Holmwood has many different components and is driven by our passionate CEO Tony Jenkins whose focus has always been on the client experience. To him, our priority is always answering the question, are we doing all we can for our clients? The Holmwood mantra is ‘our kind of people’ and for the team that means doing their best for everyone without exception. Our direction remains simply to work closely with all our clients to deliver award winning results for them. EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE
Melinda Collins
hen I was 10, I wanted to be a forensic scientist; when I was 11, I wanted to be a veterinarian; but ever since I was 12 years old I have wanted to be a journalist. A somewhat unusual occupation for a young person growing up in a small rural town, in fact, I can remember a favourite teacher gently guiding me in another direction. Fact is, at face value, it wasn’t an achievable goal. Due to a complete lack of relevant work experience options in my town, school work experience was spent at the local vet and, although this undoubtedly would have resulted in an extremely fulfilling career, writing was where my heart was – although my three dogs stand as testament to my love of animals. Eventually, after leaving my family to commence several years of study, I got there, the first in my immediate family to attend university. But that is the country we live in. It’s a country of opportunity; it’s a country of ‘if you work hard you can achieve’ and it’s a country where anything is possible. Also from a small rural town is our beautiful cover model this issue. From the small South Otago town of Milton, Sam Hayes made her way up to the big lights of Auckland and found herself on the hot seat of Nightline at an incredible age of 23. She hasn’t stopped achieving and pushing the boundaries of what is achievable. She was, and is, an inspiration. At the time of print, Sam was heading into the elimination episode of Dancing With the Stars and, although we doubt this fleet-footed beauty is at risk of leaving us, Suzy Cato’s shock elimination goes to show that anything can happen in the world of reality TV. So all the best Sam – your former Tokomairiro High School classmates aren’t ready to see you leave just yet.

Mark Hadlow has played a middle-aged man in lycra, vaudevillian Harry in Sir Peter Jackson’s King Kong, a S.N.A.G. (Sensitive New Age Guy) and a grey-haired, bulbous-nosed dwarf. Now he’s playing the uptight Stu who’s having a bit of a hard time in The Biggest. Metropol catches up with Mark about a busy but fulfilling career.
You must be one of the busiest blokes in the business! How does a day in the life of Mark Hadlow look these days? It’s busy! If I was to take the last four weeks and pick a day, well breakfast at 7 (Manuka honey Pic’s Peanut Butter on Vogel’s toast and a Kenya Bold tea). Learn some lines for the morning rehearsals which start at 10 and go till 4 with The Biggest. Then after rehearsals bike home, stopping briefly to have a puncture repaired at Scotty Browns, then home and walk up Harry Ell walkway saying the 1235 lines of MAMIL in prep for the season just completed at the Isaac Theatre Royal.

So it is pretty hectic but it keeps you alert mentally and there’s so much support from your colleagues. How does it feel to have been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit recognising your career on stage, screen and radio last year? The ONZM is pretty special and I’m chuffed to have received it. It’s a great honour, but a lot of people both professional and family have been a huge part of my success by supporting me, so I like to think of it as an award for the industry, the acting and theatre community getting the nod of the award as much as me.
How much of acting is natural talent and how much is sheer hard work? I think it’s fifty/fifty. There is no doubt that the playing field is different now – much more competition. It’s a tough business; less money, fewer theatres and more variety. But the essence, the proof of the pudding is in the content, the writing and the performance. It’s about quality – it always should be. People are paying big money to see shows and we have to deliver. That means talent and experience and of course a well-acted, directed, costume and
set design and lighting theatrical experience; they need to be at a level that is the best. What do you see as some of the challenges facing theatre in New Zealand? Challenges facing theatres are pretty daunting. Dwindling audiences are a constant issue. And an incredible loyal audience educated into live
theatre is getting fewer. This age of technology in your hand on countless devices presents such an alternative entertainment opportunity for so many. The uprising of Netflix, Lightbox, arena spectaculars, constant touring bands and many other largescale productions and, of course, Sky Sport right into the lounge – so why go out, let alone to the theatre? I think education has a lot to

What does the next 12 months have in store for you? The Biggest at The Court Theatre and then the world premiere of Stef Harris’ film Blue Moon in the NZIFF at the ITR in August with myself and Jed Brophy in the lead roles. In October I’m heading to Auckland and ATC to be in Shortland St the Musical, then back here in Christchurch Jan-March 2019 for Elling at The Court Theatre and on stage with Ross Gumbley. do with keeping it relevant and available. The resurgence of Shakespeare with the Pop Up Globe has certainly stimulated the interest in that, but for the pro theatre companies and smaller independent productions, capturing the future audience attendees on a regular basis requires considerable resilience and resources, especially encouraging New Zealand writers with NZ stories.

dance df Sunday and Monday nights, many of us are locked to TV Three to watch some of our much-loved celebrities swing, pirouette, lunge and cha-cha their way across our screens in an attempt to become New Zealand’s heartfelt winner of Dancing with the Stars. Metropol talks to Sam Hayes about her journey from the news desk to the dance floor. How far out of your comfort zone is ballroom dancing? The show is right at the very edge of my comfort zone but I’ve managed to get the nerves under control now we’re a few weeks in. I’ve never danced before, so every week means starting our assigned style from scratch, remembering the steps and trying to breathe confidence and emotion into every movement. I liken it to climbing a mountain every week, because that’s what the challenge feels like! I’d probably prefer to tackle a mountain to be honest, but I’m throwing everything I’ve got at dancing and having a lot of fun along the way. How important is your chosen charity, Riding for the Disabled, to you? I wanted to support a charity that helps children and because I grew up riding horses and teaching kids to ride, NZ Riding for the Disabled (RDA) seemed like the perfect fit. There are 55 RDA centres around the country that work with thousands of children and adults with disabilities every week, using four legged therapists to assist the development of their bodies and minds. I’ve been lucky enough to meet several young riders who just love their weekly sessions. Seven year old Pippa has spina bifida and rides with braces on her legs. It’s brilliant physiotherapy for her and helps develop the muscles in her legs, back and core, all while she’s having fun and not thinking about any pain. Seeing the smiles on the RDA riders’ faces is motivation enough for me to get cracking with five or more hours of dance training each day. RDA has a long waiting list and wants to reach double the number of people they already do. I want to do everything I can to help them reach that goal and once I have some free time again (after the show is finished!) I’ll be volunteering as often as I can. How has your career thus far prepared you for Dancing with the Stars? More than a decade in a news studio has certainly helped me with the live TV aspect of the show, but that’s about it. Dancing with the Stars is completely different to anything I’ve ever done before and it’s fair to say it really pushes me out of my comfort zone, but I love a good challenge and it’s for a great cause. Have you always loved dancing? I love music but I’ve never danced before and never thought I would find myself taking up a dancing challenge like this one. Do I love dance? Of course! 12 June 21, 2018 Metropol
Aaron and I went to see the Cuban ballet company Ballet Revolución for some inspiration and I was absolutely floored by their beauty and skill, especially now I have a bit of insight into just how difficult it really is. Do you find it a challenge physically or is it more of a mental challenge? Both. Physically, I am getting fitter and stronger, but there’s no time to rest and recover so every week it gets a bit harder, rather than easier. Mentally, I find my mind fatigues more quickly than my body, and I get frustrated when a move or sequence isn’t sinking in. It’s been so good for me to face that mental and physical fatigue and push myself to keep going. I’ve learnt a lot about myself and what I’m capable of. It’s been such a positive and rewarding journey – and I have to say a huge thank you to my dance partner Aaron for that.
You’re in great shape on the show; how much preparation went in before and was it enough for the demands you’re facing now? Not nearly enough! I thought I was reasonably fit before the show; I went to the gym a couple of times a week and would run a fair bit too but none of that prepared me for the physical demands. I’ve trained for a minimum of four hours a day, every day since Easter, back in March. There are definitely moments when everything hurts! Earlier in the season I was on Tramadol for a rib injury, thanks to a lift in one of our dances. But is it all worth it? Absolutely. We’re supporting an incredible charity and I’m now starting to believe we could make it to the final. I’d love to win that mirror ball trophy for all the kids at Riding for the Disabled. If they can overcome the challenges in their lives then I can push on through the mental and physical fatigue and hopefully make them proud each week when we take to the dancefloor. Do you have anyone you admire from the show? How’s the dynamic with the other dancers? We’re a happy little family at the studio. We’re all going through the same ups and downs and supporting each other through it. I admire each and every one of the professional dancers. They’re not only teaching their celebrities a dance each week in record time, but they choreograph that dance too. They’re endlessly creative and encouraging in what is a highly stressful environment. They’re the real stars.

Ballantynes has long been the haven for everything beautiful, across fashion, lifestyles and homewares. But as the main store began its rebuild along Lichfield Street post-quake, its homewares departments were temporarily relocated into new premises.
A
temporary building opposite the South City Mall at 520 Colombo Street was set up to house most of these offerings for the past seven years. Now the department store is celebrating the homecoming of its homewares departments, on their return to the city mall store, with the Home Edit store at 520 Colombo Street now closed. Recognising its customers wanted all the store’s departments under one roof while the rebuild project is underway, Ballantynes made the decision to bring them home and they have made room within the existing footprint to
house the different homewares departments. You’ll now find the Stationery, Home & Living, French Country, NZ Gifts, Bed & Bath, and Childrenswear & Toys departments on the lower ground floor of Ballantynes in the city, with the Cook & Dining department on the ground floor. Ballantynes is also celebrating its annual home event. On Wednesday 27 June, there will be an evening of home inspiration, food tastings, entertainment, giveaways and exclusive deals. radar by a careers advisor in high school, before she attended Canterbury University, supporting herself with part time promotional work in radio – of all things. “I wanted to be a story teller and there’s no better place than the media to do that,” she says. “I had so much admiration for journalists and radio hosts. I’ve loved the adventure over the past decade.” Brodie has some pretty impressive accolades under her commercial belt, including interviewing Mick Fleetwood from Fleetwood Mac, even winning Best Broadcast Sports Story award a couple of years back. But it’s her work with Fair Go that stands out as one of the most rewarding. “Every day I feel lucky to be in the job I’m in. I am very lucky to be in an industry I love; that’s pretty cheesy, but hey!” So how is radio treating her? “If print, TV and radio were three siblings, radio would be the super fun party sister,” she laughs.
“It is so much fun; there are so many passionate people that work here. What I really like is you get to be yourself. What I love about The Hits is that they’re awesome about encouraging you to be a strong woman, not enforcing old school stereotypes. “They really want their women hosts across the country to be strong and speak their mind. I’m really lucky to be able to do that; get up every morning, work with Fitzy and just have so much fun. It makes the awful time of the alarm clock going off worth it.” What does the next 12 months have in store? “I’ve got some exciting personal projects like the Auckland Marathon later this year and other sports broadcasting related things on the cards. But workwise, we will continue to grow the show so that every single person in Christchurch sets their alarm for 6am and listens to us for the next three hours,” she laughs. With that level of passion and dedication, you just know it’s going to happen.

I really enjoyed my job working on Breakfast, but as time went by, it was the lure of a new challenge. I’ve always loved radio and one of my goals was to host a radio show. “The opportunity to host a breakfast radio show was too good to be true, combined with being able to come home to spend more time with my family and give something else a good crack. It just made sense in the end.” So how’s she enjoying being back? “I’m answering this on what’s probably the coldest day of the year,” she laughs. “I’m loving it. The last time I lived in Christchurch was for 18 months back in 2014. It was a broken city. I know there is such a long way to go, but equally there are so many wonderful things happening, so many wonderful people are involved in getting the city back on its feet. “Christchurch is a really colourful, vibrant city. It’s really grown in the last 12 months or so and it’s fun to see it happen.” Journalism was first put on Brodie’s

eToo
Following hot on the high-profile heels of the Harvey Weinstein allegations, it has been gaining viral traction since October 2017 when it emerged as a tool to demonstrate the widespread prevalence of sexual assault and harassment, particularly in the workplace.
A
lyssa Milano first encouraged women to tweet about it to “give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem” and it has since been given high profile endorsement from the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley Judd, Jennifer Lawrence and Uma Thurman.
What prompted you to start the #metoo movement here in New Zealand? I was really moved by the power the #metoo movement, after the Weinstein revelations, gave back to women. Survivors’ stories of sexual harassment at work have been ignored or minimised since, well, forever. In late October I saw an excolleague of mine in Australia, Tracey Spice OA, had set up an investigation into the media and entertainment industry over there and had thousands of people contact her. I got her on my radio show to explain what she was doing, and after the interview she emailed and strongly encouraged me to do the same here. I took a few months to pluck up the courage, really. There were great journalists telling #metooNZ stories here, but no co-ordinated effort with a sole-focus team. Then Melanie Reid and Sasha Borissenko broke the Russell McVeagh story and it was obvious to me there must be others, perhaps hundreds of others. I had the opportunity to give the idea in a two minute ‘elevator pitch’ to Stuff CEO Sinead Boucher, and she said an unequivocal ‘yes’ on the spot. This is so much more than a social movement. What is the ultimate goal? The goal is make sure womens’ (and there are men who are also survivors
Now our very own Alison Mau is heading New Zealand’s very own #metoo movement. But as she tells Metropol, this campaign is about so much more than a social movement, with the potential to make some very real, very powerful change.
of this) voices are heard and believed. In too many of the cases that have come to us, organisations have been reluctant to believe, or have minimised/dismissed, the reports of workers who have been harassed. That alone would lead to better practices and outcomes. I also want it make sure that it’s not only people in professional jobs, who have a voice. Women working in minimum waged jobs often feel even more powerless against this kind of behaviour than women with the knowledge and relative power and privilege that lawyers for example, have. Why should women who work in hospitality, in factory or farming or freezing works jobs, miss out on a voice? Ultimately, I’d also like to see every organisation in New Zealand thoroughly examine and (if needs be) overhaul their harassment and bullying policies so that they’re no longer geared to protect the corporate reputation, but instead are focussed on justice and help for the victim. How does it feel to have received the support and resources that you have to be able to make a real difference in this area? Amazing – it feels just amazing! I’m so grateful to Stuff for being willing to jump into this without a time limit, without any nit-picking
about resources. They’ve allowed me to lead the team in a reasonably hands-off manner and it’s hard work, but we’re starting to make some real headway. How powerful are some of the stories that have been coming out as a result of this? Open-a-bottle-of-wine-type powerful. Keep-you-awake-at-3ampowerful. I’ve been in tears at my laptop on a few occasions. The number of people diagnosed with PTSD and who have had to leave their careers, or even leave town, is really disturbing. How much of a problem do we have in New Zealand? I’d have to say we don’t really know yet. We’ve had around 400 people contact us but there are new people coming to us every day. Every time we publish a story it gives others the courage to come forward. What is your message to New Zealand? The message is in the work – after three months’ graft we’re starting to publish some big stories. Each one takes a great deal of careful research and attention to detail to get right. Sometimes that takes months. I’d like Kiwis to keep reading the results of our work and understand the breadth and the nuance of the problem. Metropol June 21, 2018 19

Blooming beautiful
SAMANTHA ROSE FLOWERS CELEBRATED ITS FIRST SUCCESSFUL YEAR AS ASHBURTON’S BUDDING NEW BUSINESS. On 28 May, Samantha Rose Trott gave out 100 roses around town for the occasion. The now 30-year-old excelled in both her floristry course at Christchurch Academy and her decade’s experience here and in Australia. However, the creative entrepreneur’s destiny was to return home to fill the mid-Canterbury gap in the market for beautiful blooms.
H
er design flair incorporates her sense of colour and theme and looks unique against the shop’s modernindustrial style – designed by her architect partner. With help from Sophie and Toni, she arranges the freshest flowers for all sorts of occasions, including birthdays, anniversaries and sympathy, and can also set up on site. From Rakaia to Rangitata, with a twice-daily delivery to Christchurch on weekdays, same day delivery requests are welcomed.
Samantha offers a private room for discretely planning wedding flowers. Meghan and Harry’s wedding bouquets included delicate forget-me-nots, lily of the valley, sweet pea and jasmine, whereas Samantha was busy last season with popular blush-toned blooms. Winter offers long-lasting Cymbidium orchids in lime-yellows, pinks and whites – with spring flowers blossoming very soon. She encourages men to give flowers as a romantic gesture. “It would be so nice to
see it happen more! It doesn’t have to be extravagant – even a bunch of lilies.” Samantha Rose Flowers also sells the luxury-scented Living Light candles and atomisers, handmade in Golden Bay, along with baby giftware, plants and cards. Open at 179 Burnett Street Ashburton Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and Saturdays 10am-1pm. Phone 03-307 4020 or visit www.samantharoseflowers.co.nz, Facebook and Instagram.

These include Look Sharp and a new concept store for Bed, Bath & Beyond. Further retailers including Tower Nails, Acquisitions, SuRa and others are open, or will be opening in the coming weeks. Ngāi Tahu Property has worked closely with Matapopore, a charitable trust incepted after the quakes to ensure mana whenua values and the voice of Ngāi Tūāhuriri and Ngāi Tahu are included in the rebuild. Kennedy says this relationship has resulted in markers of Ngāi Tahu culture being included in the development. The work of Fayne Robinson, a Ngāi Tahu master carver, and other Māori artists, have been incorporated on site. “These examples of Toi Māori (Māori art) reflect the stories of mana whenua from this area of Canterbury and acknowledge its Māori history. GREEN WITH envy
2.
By Melinda Collins
Green is the colour associated with envy and, when it comes to fashion, that makes sartorial sense because, with so many things to covet and collect in this space, there’s always something bigger and better to fix our aspirational eyes on.
The colours of nature bring fashion to life
T
his season we’re going green with envy in a much more literal sense as designers use the colours of nature to bring fashion to life. Green’s growth in popularity also represents a deliberate shift towards presenting sustainable fashion and we’re looking forward to adding the lush palette to our wardrobes.

A tad classy The best designer clothing is supremely comfortable, toasty, and addictive. Ditto with accessories. This describes the wares at TAD. Even the wallets, key-rings and cuffs here have feel-good factor.
F
or real feather handbags sharing display space with fine sterling silver necklaces, cuddly merino ponchos and wholly desirable LTB denim and Black Orchid jeans, the TAD stores at either Pegasus, North Canterbury or Northlands, Papanui are great destinations. TAD is actually a bit of a fashion-blogger’s paradise. That’s because cool pieces to coordinate co-exist here. The result? That ‘I just pulled on the clothes hanging over the end of my bed’ look, when you want the appearance of effortless. It’s non-matchy-matchy; authenticity plus attitude.
Even hats here are knubbly knits or that rarely found style essential; the felted, 100 percent woollen panama. And extra fashion points apply for this appearing in navy as well as ubiquitous black. TAD offers delectable fluffy slide-slippers. There’s comfort mixed with IT-girl nonchalance and enough practicality to justify their purchase. “We buy and stock highly wearable clothes,” co-owner Tracey says. TAD’s tactile, sensuous stock has labels like Ivy Blu, Naudic, Ministry of Style, Nyx & Min, Mooi, and Silk & Steel amongst many more.

Going Grey Gracefully
Beautifully styled grey hair is turning more heads than ever before in a growing trend towards natural beauty – enhanced with a little salon magic.
M
aster Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee, of V for Hair and Beauty upstairs in Merivale Mall, says women often start to grey by 35, or even earlier – and many are now loving the look and making the most of the change. It’s important to choose a shade that suits your skin. The grey colour palette in clothes fashion has never dated, so sultry hues of silver, sand, dove, iris and lilac for hair can also be incredibly feminine and flattering. Like any change in hair colour or style, it’s a transition, so planning ahead for special occasions is vital. V for Hair and Beauty’s stylists offer a complimentary consultation and may suggest going lighter with a base colour, highlights, age-blend colours to soften obvious lines, or weaving in lowlights for darker hair. the fashion ante in a custom Stella McCartney midi dress, with cap-sleeves, cinched-in waist and pencil skirt silhouette. The Pre-Fall 2018 collection of New Zealand’s very own Trelise Cooper offers a delicious look at just what can be achieved with this colour palette. It mirrors the trending colours of homewares and Tile Warehouse has on offer some exciting new ranges that reflect these colours. Pictured is the stunning Maiolica range fresh from Brazil, with a luxurious gloss finish, in shades of yellow, orange, red, navy blue and turquoise. Bright, beautiful and luxurious, we expect this trend to stay around. The direct complementary colour on the colour wheel to Pantone’s Colour of 2018, Ultra Violet, the two make a clever colour companionship. Berry tones such as fuchsia and magenta make for a powerful partnership, while rich mustard yellow and pale mauve-pink make an unexpected, yet cheerful combo. After all, as they say, opposites do attract.

This year’s trends have launched with a mix of inspirational, daring and bright colours that revitalise and invigorate, alongside tranquil tones that bring a sense of calm. Think peachy pink and earthy mustards and turmeric tones to peacock green, deep navy and rich crimsons that are bringing life into both décor and fashion. white Winter By Melinda Collins
Christchurch may not quite be in the geographical running for a white winter, but there’s no reason not to bring the crisp, fresh look to your wardrobes.
ecause, although the unspoken rules of fashion suggest that this clever colour chameleon be relegated to the summer sun, we’re all for breaking a few sartorial rules, in the most stylish of ways. While lighter textiles such as white cotton, linen and canvas can look out of place when temperatures hit below freezing levels, it’s high time to reach for white wool, cashmere, mohair, flannel, silk and leather. White coats are having a serious moment in the sartorial spotlight this season, if we’re to take our tips from the runways at top brands like Celine, Dior and Michael Kors. We’re also seeing an increasing number of white shoes making their way to market. White denim is making its comeback, offering a crisp and classy office alternative to traditional black. Accessories too are making their mark on winter, with scarves, beanies, bags and even jewellery making a seasonal splash. The farewell to summer is tough. But the change of season also signals a few months of cosiness ahead and we’re all for doing what it takes to make it through. After all, when the going gets tough, the tough get… snug!

The motivation for the arty event is about creativity, participation, inclusivity and fun. One category attracting a good number of entrants involves receiving a ‘Sow’s Ear’ bag of fabrics and assorted materials. Kim says that people can, but don’t have to model their own creations. Often family members and friends become the designer’s models. Alternatively, designers can choose to have a model provided. A range of tickets are available; some include North Canterbury wine labeled ‘27 Seconds,’ which donates profits to help stem the third world problem of human slavery. “It’s a way for us to support a great cause that touches all hearts,” Kim says. What attracted you to fashion design? I’ve been sewing and making clothes since I was seven years old, my mum taught me. It’s who I am, the creativity and fun of putting something together and enjoying wearing it. I have an eye for colour and design and I love to make people smile, whether it’s styling ladies for an event or a pretty, uplifting fabric which is loved. Why do you think people have connected so much with what you do? I was bought up on a dairy farm, in the clean country air, where I loved nature, the beauty of colours and landscapes. I have woven these intrinsic values to my business, through vibrant colours, playful prints and versatile clothing. Some of our dresses and tops can be worn several ways, easy to style and are super comfy. An outfit to can take you from daytime fun to an evening out, just change your shoes, it’s that simple and fits the busy lifestyles we lead.
Fashion label Bettie Monroe is about so much more than dressing women; it’s about empowering them. Metropol talks to one half of this design duo – locally based Helen Fraser about creating beauty and drawing inspiration.
Where do you draw your inspiration from? Nature… I love the simplicity of it, the beauty of colours. We have lots of floral prints, as well as the vibrant base colours to style with and get more out of your outfit. I never stop, I may see a cool design someone is wearing, or a photo on Pinterest, or the way a fabric drapes. I love what I do, therefore I am inspired to create pieces that evolve and will add fun to our customers’ lives.

How would you describe Bettie Monroe’s design philosophy? It’s about empowering women to feel confident and happy through their clothing and expression of personal style. We are not an age or size; we are fun, playful, whimsical and timeless. Our clothes last the distance, are feminine and versatile. Being proudly New Zealand made enables us to deliver garments at the highest quality and sustainably.

people about the risks and pitfalls of seeking cosmetic surgery overseas. He believes there’s general lack of knowledge about the sometimes devastating consequences of plastic-surgery tourism. “Our focus here is on producing good, natural-looking results for our patients in a peer-reviewed, medically multi-disciplinary environment,” Dr Ken says. “We will do a procedure only if the results are going to be right for a patient for the long term,” he adds. With specialists in slightly differing areas of expertise working side by side here, Dr Macdonald says the KM surgical team is ideally placed diagnostically. He’s been aware of patients seeking treatment for age-spots in non-medical aesthetic treatment clinics, which were actually undiagnosed melanomas. From the novice’s viewpoint, it makes sense then, even when seeking just a lunchtime facial filler or laser procedure, to have it done safely in a purpose-built daystay surgery facility, where there’s on-site medical supervision. Thankfully, KM Surgical offers just about every procedure known to be aesthetically and medically beneficial, which results in natural-looking rejuvenation. The team uses minimally-invasive techniques and light sedation for all cosmetic surgical treatments, making recovery fast and ensuring safety.

urable, versatile and highly transitional are what make a great wardrobe when it comes to the blokes in our lives, so investment pieces really are the way to go when you’re in the market for menswear. Watches and jewellery from Thomas Sabo meet this brief to a tee and thankfully are stocked locally at the likes of Petersens Jewellers. They are made to last the test of time – pun very much intended.
Man bags too are increasingly popular, with bags designed for men reported to be making up more than a fifth of the luxury handbag market – and rising. Functional or not, those with reservations around wearing a bag can be influenced by style. So why not try something upmarket and steer away from a feminine aesthetic. As they say, first impressions count and we don’t want to be the ones to test the veracity of such claims.

Whether or not our hair is in top condition is occasionally a cause for concern. Then there’s the issue of whether a cut or look still suits. It’s easy to get stuck in a style which isn’t optimally flattering. Too often we’re in the groove of our own time pressures, using once-ideal haircare products. about what will suit for a switched-up look is invaluable. It is not widely understood, yet that headache or migraine can be literally a pain in the neck,” says Clare Brandrick, Director and Senior Physiotherapist at Muscle People Physiotherapy.
I
n the past 10 years, the understanding of the causes of headaches and migraines has evolved, and research is showing that sensitisation of the brain stem can be causing the problem. If, like 13 percent of the population, you are affected by migraines and headaches, you’ll know they are unpredictable and extremely debilitating. They mean time off school or work, missed opportunities and difficulty in planning ahead. The
powerful medications used to alleviate pain can have side effects, can even cause rebound headaches and have to be taken at the right time to be effective. The approach at Muscle People does not involve manipulating or cracking the neck. Instead, the appropriate spinal segments are gently stressed in a smooth, sustained manner. The physiotherapists are trained in the ‘Watson Headache Approach’, a method of examining the small movements of the top three spinal segments. It is an internationally recognised approach for diagnostic accuracy and for reducing the pain of headaches and migraines. It can reduce the amount of medication taken, or remove the need for it altogether. Clare says that patients generally come to the clinic four or five times in the first few weeks of treatment and they are shown some very simple exercises to do at home. After the first few weeks, treatment sessions are guided by how the patient is feeling. By the time they get to the clinic for the first time, patients can be at their wit’s end, but are really surprised at how quickly things can change for the better. Migraine patient Nick says, “I have had migraines since I was about four and
since I had treatment at Muscle People and doing the exercises, I haven’t had a migraine in, I don’t know how long. I know if I do my exercises I’m ok,” Another patient Tania says, “After three months of bouncing between different physios and specialists, I found that after five minutes with Clare the problem was pretty much solved”. Three Christchurch locations – City, Bishopdale and Wigram Skies – see people travelling from as far as Auckland and Invercargill to seek treatment. Muscle People

theCoolest Workouts Snow needn’t be a hindrance when it comes to keeping fit and healthy during the winter months. In fact, with these cool sports on the winter radar, you don’t need to wait until it warms up to start work on your summer body.

Snow-biking: After languishing in big brother snowmobile’s shadow, snow bikes are having their moment in the recreational spotlight. Using a bike with two skis instead of tyres, it’s a pretty cool workout, both literally and figuratively.
Ice-skating: Not new by any stretch of the recreational imagination, ice-skating’s cool cred has stood the test of time and, despite its effortless grace, it actually utilises all your stabilising muscles.

Snowshoeing: The cool kid on the winter block, snowshoeing is a great way to enjoy the white stuff and the mountains, while having a little offpiste adventure.
Cross-country skiing: Although these days crosscountry skiing is more about recreation than transportation, this is a total body workout of the coolest kind. And, with the clean mountain air and exceptional scenery along the way, it’s the best of both worlds.

Arrowtown’s C U LT U R A L

By Keiran Bleach
If outdoor pursuits in the bone-chilling Southern Lakes winter are not your bag, take refuge indoors and discover some of the cultural, historic and artistic gems in Arrowtown. You don’t have to wander far off the beaten track – or the main street – to get a decent dose of intellectual and sensory stimulation.
1.
Take a step back in time at Lakes District Museum. Arrowtown is steeped in rich history, thanks to its fascinating goldmining past, and the museum showcases it well. Jane Peasey – who is responsible for special projects – says it’s an excellent starting point to get an overview of how the area was developed and who and what shaped this quaint town. Throughout the three heritage buildings there are working displays illustrating early Maori life and the harsh pioneering times that European settlers and goldminers endured. For winter there’s a display of historic skiing, snowshoeing and ice skating gear and photos. Lakes District Museum also houses an art gallery, bookshop, archives and a busy education programme. Open seven days at 49 Buckingham Street.

Nadene Milne Gallery is a calm, peaceful space that provides welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the main street. Operated by two of the most experienced gallerists in New Zealand, Nadene Milne and Jacinta Byron, it shows many of the most collectible, contemporary artists in the country. Its stable of well-known names includes Judy Millar, Shane Cotton, Fiona Pardington and Max Gimblett. Having carved out a strong reputation within the industry, the gallery attracts serious art collectors nationwide as well as from overseas. A highlight this winter will be a presentation of new works by Shane Cotton, due in early July. Nadene Milne Gallery is open 11am to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday, at 16 Buckingham Street. For viewings outside these times, phone 0274 401 665.

For a unique experience that is so much more than just a standard trip to ‘the flicks,’ check out Dorothy Browns boutique theatre, bar and bookshop. The atmosphere in the main cinema is all romantic charm, with floating pink chiffon decorating the walls and glass-beaded chandeliers setting a scene of opulence and sophistication. Cheeseboards and wine glasses are easily accommodated by the armrests on the huge seats and, if you need more sustenance half-way through the movie, there’s a very handy intermission. The den is a smaller, more cosy environment, with seating for 20. Screening both mainstream and arthouse films, Dorothy Browns is at 18 Buckingham Street.
Blue Moon Rummage is a treasure chest filled with an eclectic mix of furniture, lamps, chandeliers, ornaments, jewellery and rustic clocks made from wine barrel ends. Specialising in vintage skiing memorabilia, it has an impressive display of vintage skis, snowshoes, cushions, reproduced signs and shirts. Pam Lawrence – who calls herself “Head Rummager” – has owned the shop for nine years and injects her own quirky style and passion in to the business. She makes regular trips to gift fairs in Canada and the United States so she can hand-pick her favourite items. Visitors will chuckle over what must be the best collection of witty and naughty gift cards to be found in the Southern Lakes. Find Blue Moon Rummage in The Arcade, Buckingham Street.

Southern Study Success Shovik Saha is a graduate of Southern Institute of Technology (SIT)’s Graduate Diploma in Hotel Management. Studying at the picturesque Queenstown campus, Shovik was impressed by the standard of learning and the tutors on his course. “All the tutors are awesome and have been great advisors. The programme was a step up in my learning and incredibly helpful towards my education surrounding New Zealand hospitality.” Studying the Graduate Diploma in Hotel Management definitely helped with finding a job in the hospitality industry in Queenstown. “I was given great exposure into New Zealand’s hospitality industry working for a year with Holiday Inn Queenstown and then stepped up to work with Novotel Queenstown Lakeside, which will boost my hospitality career. “I would definitely recommend the Graduate Diploma in Hotel Management to other students who wish to further their studies in hospitality.” The next intake for this programme begins on 30 July 2018, and SIT looks forward to receiving enrolments from interested students.

unedin’s restored Law Courts, a modern counterpart to the historic Eichardt’s Building in Queenstown and a series of small shelters for an Invercargill Estuary Walkway are among the winners of this year’s awards, announced earlier this month. But it’s not just the commercial spaces which are making an architectural statement, with the jury presenting eight awards to residential projects within the region. Amongst the winning properties were two standalone Queenstown houses. Condon Scott Architects was praised for the planning, orientation and siting of its Kelvin Heights House, while Fleck House, designed by Jeremy Kingan Architects, has “proportions to die for”, according to judges. We have found out more about these exceptional spaces on pages 50-51.

With the building boom in Queenstown and Southern Lakes putting pressure on the industry, Master Builder Paul Reed Homes has shared some ‘Insider Tips’ to help you avoid some of the stress and hidden ‘financial traps’.
1.
Beware of low-ball quotes that are full of substitutions to the original specs. Underpricing often results in builders cutting corners later to maximise profit, or even running out of cash before the work is completed, causing them to go bankrupt.
2.
Question every ‘PC Sum’ in your quote. These are estimates only for kitchens, bathroom fittings, floor-coverings, electrical fit-out etc, but they are often underestimated to keep quotes as low as possible, with unexpected expenses if you upgrade fittings later.
3.
Avoid over-committed contractors. Yes, projects can be delayed by bad weather etc but try to avoid unrealistic promises from contractors who might be tempted to take more work than they can handle at one time.
4.
Always choose the best value for money quote. Remember to look for what’s not included in your contract as well as what is included. And, as a rule of thumb, the cheapest quotes usually have the least information – again often leading to more expenditure later.

T
he rhythmic design concept of patterned repetition is evident in the gabled barn section of the house where the roof is clad in ‘tray’ style steel of flat pan and rib, which is then folded down the walls. Rhythmic progression is provided by the second form and material: a box-shaped wing sided in cedar shiplap. Jeremy’s aesthetic is to stay true to the material he is using and find something intriguing about it. “If you choose to use plywood, don’t pretend it is board and batten; be sure to celebrate its sheet form.” Rhythm is apparent in the outlook of this home, as well as its design, positioned as it is for maximum appreciation of the four seasons as they cycle across the elevations of Coronet Peak. This stunning northern outlook can be appreciated from the kitchen and family area, as well as the dining and living areas, and the main bedroom. The interior features polished concrete, which Jeremy has been incorporating into designs for 40 years “long before it became fashionable” and its counterpoint is planking in oak. Jeremy says the concept for the house came together really harmoniously: the clients’ architect family member introduced the concept; the clients brought thoughts of their own; Jeremy added his ideas then finessed the proportions and pulled it together. Richard Fleck of Fleck Construction built the house for his young family. Growing up just down the road from the site, the
50 June 21, 2018 Metropol
desire to raise his family in a rural setting made the choice of location obvious. The family found working with Jeremy straightforward and collaborative, Richard says. “We love the proportions Jeremy produced for the design. Proportions are key to a great home and they are perfect here.” Not only does the house feature stunning good looks, the space and layout make it easy for a young family to live in. There are four in the Fleck Construction team, working all around the Southern Lakes area. It’s a flexible company working on larger or smaller scale homes, and on major or minor renovations. Richard says projects come through word of mouth and, while larger architectural homes are now making up a greater share of the business, smaller developments and proposals are always welcome. The next build is an Arrowtown house incorporating environmentally sustainable features. Richard says the ‘greening’ and increased energy efficiency of homes is a positive step given “the annual struggle with elements, which is the price Mother Nature extracts for living within such outstanding natural beauty”. Loty heights of success
Thanks to the very positive collaboration of architect, builder and client, a stunningly beautiful home now graces the shores of Lake Wakatipu, high up on Kelvin Heights, Queenstown. All involved in the process were so delighted with the final outcome with the project winning the housing category of the NZIA’s 2018 Southern Architecture Awards.
“T
his was no easy project,” says Barry Condon, of Condon Scott Architects, Wanaka. “But I’m passionate about solving the unique challenges that are presented with each new site and client brief.” The site for this house definitely posed those challenges on which Barry and his team thrive. It is a steeply sloping site overlooking Lake Wakatipu, but adding to the complications was the fact that the footing for the house is a rocky outcrop, which diagonally cuts the site in two. “The clients’ brief was for us to create a family home that would capitalise on the views to the lake and mountains, and which would also have an outdoor area protected from the wind. Not only did we have the site itself to contend with, but also a 7m height control envelope, which restricts roof form heights once over the edge of the escarpment.” Condon Scott is known for tailor-made solutions using strong design-based architecture. Barry’s solution was a series of stepped levels contained within two wedge-shaped forms, designed to fit under
the height control envelope. The southern wedge (containing the guest bedrooms) presents to the street; its stepped metal cladding hinting at the level changes within. The northern wedge is orientated west to the lake view and contains the day-today living areas and the master bedroom suite. The two wedges are linked by a low roofed element creating a courtyard to capitalise on morning sun and provide a sheltered retreat on windy days. “With such a challenging site, we had to be innovative. We believe that the solution is elegant and responds harmoniously to the complexities of the site.” It wasn’t only the architect who had to grapple with the constraints posed by the site. The responsibility for translating the design from paper into concrete form lay with Trevor Ward Builders of Queenstown. This construction company specialises in building architectural homes and has consistently won prestigious awards at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year. “Because of the slope of the site we had to start at the lower edge and work our
way back up to the street,” Trevor Ward explains. “The building is literally drilled into the site with starter bars driven into the schist stone for the footings of the foundation walls of the house. The ground-works and up-to-slab level construction took almost half of the build time with the steep terrain making it difficult to access and operate machinery, particularly at the lower levels of the site.” Trevor and his team are known for the fastidious quality of their workmanship as well as their attention to detail and the Kelvin Heights house is a particular source of pride to them all. “The whole project was undoubtedly a total team effort which was very satisfying to be part of.”

loudy Bay pairs up with the best in restaurants to create great pairings for its magnificent Te Wahi Pinot Noir. This year, the addition of prosciutto, a thinly sliced Italian dry cured ham, adds some variety to the beautiful 2015 vintage. The flavours of duck and prosciutto have always gone well with the velvet smoothness and rich cherry and berry flavours of pinot noir, which Master Sommelier, Madeline Triffon calls ‘Sex in a glass’.
“Following four successful years of Cloudy Bay Pinot and Duck, we are thrilled to be teaming up with top Chef Sean Connolly and Wellington-based platter artisan Kate Marinkovich to bring to life the new Pinot & Prosciutto pairing and to offer their prosciutto knowledge and styling expertise,” Cloudy Bay Senior Brand Manager Ali Campbell says. iveMeBread delivers Christchurch’s culinary favourites, fresh and hot, directly to the door, within half an
hour – for a nominal charge that rivals petrol and parking costs. The $5.99 delivery fee (up to 4kms), with $1 per extra
kilometre, makes it cost effective and convenient. Marketing entrepreneurs Cathy and Abhay, who saw a gap in the market, launched the company in January 2018. Via an easy app or the website, customers order what they want, including special requests and instructions. GiveMeBread contracts local drivers, with sufficient deliverers for every partnered restaurant and your meal’s whereabouts can be tracked on GPS. Delivered in specially insulated bags, it’s like dinner has just come out of the oven. “Quality and size is the same as you would get at the restaurant,” Abhay says. Nearly 50 restaurants of multiple cuisines are already on board, including Slick Burgers, Thai Chef, The China Kitchen, Pitapit (Sydenham), Pedros House of Lamb and Madam Kwong. Riccarton locals have 25 choices and Papanui and Sydenham and the CBD are well represented, with further area expansion underway. Larger catering requests can also be arranged. “If you’re out, you can also place an order online from a restaurant’s menu and then pick it up on your way home at no extra cost.” The website’s Bread Burpster Club awards a discount point for every $20 spent, regular specials, discounted or even free deliveries - making it even more appealing. Grand National Steeplechase. The hotel’s popularity has continued and ongoing refurbishments are sympathetic to its classical grandeur. The hospitable Hoofbeats restaurant sports the same DNA as the Oxford on Avon, using the original ovens, recovered post-quake, to cook the same famous roasts. Wholesome fare like Hoofbeats burgers and pork belly, match the New Zealand wine selection. The family friendly restaurant has warm décor, booth seating and a cool kids’ room attached, with movies, beanbags, desks and colouring-in pads. The smart new Carbine Bar, with deepbutton leather seating, has an original stained-glass window backlit behind the bar, making it fabulous for functions. The walls have a tribute to Carbine, the 1890 Melbourne Cup winning horse that was stabled on the property and the unsolved murder of publican Donald Fraser in 1933. His ghost is believed to reside upstairs. Walk through to the large sports bar with TAB, casino and live music. People travelling in and out of town find the sunny motor lodge at the rear of the hotel. A one-stop-shop, the hotel even has a roast ready and the electric blanket on for regular tired travellers. Scrumptious Selections Banter, a busy mobile Sydenham based café that’s got the recipe perfect, is run solely by two talented best mates.
asmine Mears and Emma Croxson have been friends for five years and have always dreamed of merging their chef and organic horticulture backgrounds to open a business together. By 6am the cabinet is crammed full with scrumptious food including vegan and gluten free options and they use organic, local and seasonal where possible. As well as the ready to go toasties, bagels and salad bowls with homemade sauerkraut, the girls offer a porridge with toppings such as cinnamon apple crumble with custard, as well as a daily soup served with Grizzly bagel toast from around the corner. Serving Supreme coffee, Mikaku tea organically grown in Banks Peninsula, as well as a fresh lemon, honey and ginger, there is a hot drink choice to satisfy everyone. Superfood smoothies are also a winner if you are in need of a vitamin boost. Although super convenient for a takeaway, just by the overbridge, there are woolly blankets and hot water bottles for those wanting to hang out. Open 6am-2pm weekdays, they also offer workplace deliveries Wednesday to Friday. You can text your coffee order through to 021 0820 9942, and plenty of on street parking makes it easy to swoop on by at 500d Colombo Street, right next to The Drawing Room.

You little hottie By Melinda Collins
When our forebears started playing with fire, it represented a significant breakthrough. Now modern technology is such that these heating elements are becoming architecturally exceptional.
W
hether you’re harnessing the heat in your home with a gas fire, wood fire, ultralow emission wood burner, multi-fuel fire or electric fire, there’s a little hottie to meet your needs. Whether you are retrofitting a character home or building a contemporary dream home from scratch, whether you’re after a freestanding model or wall-mounted
masterpiece, there are some beautiful modern fireplaces that will light up your life. For a modern twist on traditional style, you can select a model reminiscent of the old-world wood-burning stoves, but with a sleek, contemporary appearance. For a modern minimalist look, try a glass fireplace. With the entire fireplace encased in glass, it creates a beautiful
open feature, making use of the smokeless flames produced by gas-burning fireplaces. Meanwhile, wood burning columns are making an increasing appearance in architecturally designed homes, often set in the centre of an open plan space. Better yet, no matter what your colour scheme, these beauties are greener than ever before.
Start from a plan or start from scratch.
We can build bespoke, or any one of our many house plans can be tailored to suit your lifestyle, giving you more choice, pure and simple.

After recently catching up with clients who are still living in their home 10 years after it was designed, the importance of well-considered design was abundantly clear. When we were designing the Brown House, they were a young family with two small boys and another on the way.
en years on, although their lives have changed, their home still works perfectly for them. They may have redecorated to match their current tastes, but the spaces remain the same; save for

the toy store! A small room off the kitchen and dining area designed for the kids’ ‘stuff’ – highchairs, games and toys – has now become the children’s study. Although the use has changed, its proximity to the
kitchen makes it ideal for its new use as it is easy to keep an eye on homework whilst cooking dinner! The value an architect brings is immeasurable; we understand that it is the

unique features and quirks that makes a house your home. Not necessarily the cedar wall in the stairwell or the double shower in the ensuite, but also how the spaces are organised to best suit the way your family lives. Some require large open plan rooms; others want more compartmentalised areas so, like the Browns, they can host dinner parties in the dining room then retire to a separate sitting area, all whilst the children are watching TV or playing video games in another space; connected but still independent. It is our job, as architects, to take the time to get to know you and your family so we can tailor your home to meet your specific needs now and into the future. After 10 years, fashions have changed, fads have come and gone but the wellconsidered design of the Brown House has stood the test of time. As architects, we want nothing more than our designs to last a lifetime. There may be cosmetic changes to ‘keep up with the times’ but the spaces should remain functional and suitable. I was surprised and delighted to hear the Browns still receive plenty of positive comments. “When people visit for the first time, they often cannot believe it’s 10 years old! Our home fits our family so perfectly that people think we have built recently, not a decade ago!” It was fascinating to discuss how the home has developed with the family and the elements they have added over time as, and when, they could afford them. When
we designed their home, a pool wasn’t a necessity, but as something they wanted in the future, it was planned for to be added later. Although the Browns would love to build again, the location, section size and their home’s spaces continue to meet their needs, so there is no real desire to move. The opportunity to revisit one of my earlier designs and discover that it is still as functional and beautiful as it was a decade ago has reminded me just how important our job, as architects, is. We help to make your house your forever home. www.caarc.co.nz

Curtain Craftmanship Combining expert craftsmanship with personalised service, New Style Blinds and Curtains is a family business with 20 years’ experience.
ounded in 1992, owners Paul O’Loughlin and his partner Alina took over the reins from Alina’s father more than a year ago. With the majority of items manufactured on site at the Waltham-based premises, New Style has been built on a solid reputation, due to many repeat clientele and word-of-mouth referrals over the years. Many of the longstanding staff have been with the company for almost as long as it’s been running. From shutters and roller blinds, to curtains of any style – traditional to ultra-modern – the team use the latest technology and industry developments combined with old-school manufacturing quality, for every creation. Offering the complete package, from consultation and design to installation, they take care of the entire process. “Not all windows are exactly the same – a couple of millimetres in a measurement makes all the difference, so it’s all about getting everything just right,” Paul says. “We have our own in-house installers and our clients’ satisfaction is of utmost importance.” Motorised roller blinds are very popular, Paul says. “It’s very affordable to motorise your blinds – prewired or battery operated – you never have to pull a blind again, just press a button.” New Style Blinds and Curtains is open Monday to Friday, 8am-5pm and Saturdays by appointment at 14 Opawa Road. he store is a gorgeous trove of all things cooking and baking. From oyster forks to cinnamon oyster tins, whatever is on your wish list, you will find it here and more besides. The baking section alone is extensive – a home baker’s heaven of tins and moulds to dream of, including friand, mini madeleines and, of the moment, donut tins. A range of cast iron cookware made in France by Staub comes in red, orange, black, grey, and blue. It’s a lifetime gift to yourself or a friend and its strength and beauty goes from stove to table. You can braise, roast, cook, stew or fry with the range, in-oven or on the stove top with the frying pans, rib grills and mussel pots. The cocottes are round and oval, and the divine pumpkin and tomato shaped casseroles will redefine your batterie de cuisine goals forever. Are you picturing a warm candlelit scene, the table alive with family and friends, good conversation and wine set off with a tasty display of tapas and sharing plates? At Total Food Equipment, the ranges available mean you’ll find a set to match your flair and flavours. There is the versatile and ever-stylish cast iron option: small
dishes in different sizes and in round and oval. Or bring colourful artisan élan to your table with the Regas range, made in Spain since 1821 from high quality fire proof terracotta clay. The cazuela is one of the oldest cooking vessels, used since pre-Roman times and still in use today in every Spanish kitchen. It is used as a frying pan over direct heat on the hob, an open fire or barbeque. It is also ovenproof and makes a great baker and roasting dish for sweet or savoury. The organic nature of terracotta adds flavour to the food and the dishes go from oven to table. Choose from round, oval, rectangle, bowls and handled bowls, there is a choice of exterior colours too. If the lashing rain and wind outside means mulled wine to you, take yours to the next level with The Herb and Spice Mill sachets of all-natural ingredients. The range of food safe presentation dishes of all types is huge at Total Food Equipment, so make it your first stop for themed parties or catering this winter too. ith Officine meaning workshop in Italian, and Voluptas being the Roman Goddess of pleasure and enjoyment, you certainly feel you have entered a workshop that diverts the five senses. The showroom is a riot of curtain options in every colour, weight and texture, with fabrics varying from velvet to silk to sheer and each room in your home catered for. The only difficulty in this temple of fabric fancies could be deciding which to choose. Fortunately, Retail Manager Kris Yang and his team of three circumvent that issue by presenting most curtain fabrics displayed in a full drop, rather than just as tiny fabric samples. You get a graceful preview of the finished effect of the curtain. The team is currently excited about helping you get your home cosy for the cold months. All clients this winter will receive free black-out weight lining with their new curtain order. The large range of winter-weight fabrics includes a luxurious 95 percent cashmere option. Kris says they will work all around the South Island, with many orders coming from the Southern Lakes area. Clients based in
Christchurch and its surrounds receive free aluminium tracking, free hanging and, of course, free measure and quote. You’ll find blinds and sunscreens as well, and all are made to measure at very competitive prices, because they are created in the company’s own factory in Auckland. The fabrics are sourced from New Zealand and China, while the roller blinds come from Australia. Most fabrics are in stock for immediate use, but should you choose something that isn’t, it will be air freighted in immediately. Where fabric is in stock, your new curtains and blinds can be hanging at your windows in under three weeks. An established business in Auckland for almost 20 years, the company expanded to Christchurch in 2016, being sure to bring the south its goal of ensuring you “receive high quality curtains at a very reasonable price”. Officine Voluptas offers a two-year warranty on all its fabrics and installation. The team would love to see Christchurch people in the new showroom and for out of town clients to phone w03-349 4888 or email officinevoluptasnz@gmail.com. Metropol June 21, 2018 75

The management group is joined by three great teams of builders constructing the homes right outside Leigh’s window. “They work under my nose all day, so quality control is top notch,” explains Leigh. Currently the stunning showhome ‘The Horizon’ is being completed in the Christchurch yard and is open for viewing from late July. Architecturally designed by Architex NZ, this home is gifted with a fabulously stylish exterior and features a huge open plan indoor living area that flows effortlessly to the exterior decking. In terms of transportable homes, it’s a game-changer. If you are considering a new home, why not jump the housing queue and buy ‘off the rack’, ready made to shift to your site? Your home, holiday house, granny flat, or Air BnB could be in place in weeks. “This can be achieved by buying a completed stock house or a plan

drive and suspension systems – the basis for the sporty driving experience offered by the new BMW Z4. “The vehicle concept of the new BMW Z4 is geared consistently towards agility and driving dynamics,” explains Jos van As, Head of Application Suspension. “The high level of body stiffness and the very rigid suspension attachment provide the perfect basis for a set-up that guarantees the performance qualities of a genuine sports car in terms of steering precision as well as longitudinal and transverse acceleration.” In short, they are making sure that the drive is as smooth as silk, but with great power for THE driving experience. The new range of BMWs is providing a drive for every area of the market, with the ‘I’s, ‘Z’s, ‘X’s and ‘M’s’ bringing an alphabet soup of automotive luxury and technology. The Z models are always pulling at my heart strings, as it was my first truly modern luxury roadster. Add all this together and you will be getting 4.1L/100km/h in fuel consumption, which is pretty good. Inside, the Lexus high standard of fit and finish is everywhere. Sitting snugly in the comfortable leather chairs, you are cocooned by high quality materials. Due to the hybrid setup, interior space is
ample but not terrific and rear seats, while providing generous support, could leave lankier passengers feeling a bit cramped. The new 10.3-inch infotainment display is much better than the old 7-inch system, and all its features, such as Sat-Nav and Bluetooth, are controlled by a mouse on the centre console. The biggest improvement is the addition of Lexus Safety System+. This means a smorgasbord of up to date active safety features, including autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist. Select ‘drive’ via the slightly awkward gear selector on the centre console and you are underway. On the road, superb ride comfort is noticeable immediately. Press the EV button and you go full
electric, though only for lower speeds. Selecting sport mode and the electric charge gauge next to the speedometer, becomes a rev counter. Vigorous acceleration takes time, 10 seconds to 100km/h no less, but once you are up and running, mile after mile is devoured with considerable ease. Steering is weighted well and despite sportier damping, it feels a bit last week in the bends. That said, a spirited drive is not really the CT200H’s forte, its much more at home silently cruising along, which it does very well indeed. The range starts at $51,690 and the F-Sport will lighten your wallet by $62,690. All in all, despite the aforementioned issues of practicality and ageing dynamics, the newly tweaked CT200H is still a respectable package.

In 2011 BMW introduced its ‘i’ brand to incorporate all of its electric plug-in vehicles or hybrids. Last year I was fortunate enough to drive the exceptional i8. This month I was introduced to its zippy little cousin, the unique BMW i3.

Although comments about how it looked were not super complimentary, I found it cute with its 19-inch BMW i-light alloy wheels, turbine styling, easy connectivity and simplicity of use being great features. Its keyless entry and start were good, but the ignition switch, park and gear lever sit behind the steering wheel on what people would call a column shift. That was a little annoying, I thought, though the reasoning I guess is so that you are constantly thinking about being on/off or driving so you don’t make the mistake of leaving it in drive and having it roll away. Unlike a fuel car, it doesn’t give you clues when you take your foot off the accelerator that it’s still in gear. Charging time is not long but like your phone, you’re going to have to make sure it’s put on the charger at the end of the day. Even though it has regeneration power options when driving, you do have the option of quick charge and that takes about 15 minutes at locations that offer them. This is BMW’s mass production electronic offering for the day to day vehicle and in my opinion, it’s good! To take a test drive, go and see the wonderful Mary or Lorenzo at Christchurch BMW to try for yourself. Good driving.

T
he base model of the i-range, the i3 also has a bigger brother: the i3s. Looks-wise, it’s a bit like a ‘cube’, with unique suicide doors that open up, revealing no centre pillar and rear seats that can be laid flat to allow an amazing amount of storage space in the boot area. It also has a surprising amount of leg room and a large front windscreen. It’s packed with loads of great details like the carbon fibre chassis and hemp interior panelling, making it not only light, but also a little bit greener. The concierge system is a BMW service that allows you to connect with someone to assist you if you are lost or need assistance. Yes! Even if you’re looking for good Indian food in another city! Crazy, huh? The Li-ion battery is 33kWh and, although that doesn’t sound very powerful, I felt it was more than enough for getting around town. And that’s really what this is; an easy to park, no petrol cost, rear view camera, turn cycle of 9.9 meters, town mobile. With petrol prices around $2.30 a litre, most of us are thinking of options. Charging from your garage wall socket, easy to use, a $77,200 starting price, all with a 200km range.

AKING MAGIC H aving recently represented Hertz as an ambassador for the Mustang, I cut my teeth with the make last year, but this reintroduction was a whole different experience. Taking the five-litre V8 through the Crowne range with the beauty of its curved open road is an exceptional driving experience. Delivering a peak of 339kW – around 450 horsepower – as standard has been achieved with the first application for Mustang of Ford’s new dual-fuel, highpressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection on a V8 engine. The result is low-end torque, high-rpm power and improved fuel efficiency. With the price of petrol, fuel efficiency is important, but when you buy a Mustang, you’re not buying it because you want
to save gas. Its sleek lines have been impressing its loyal fan base since 1965; those loyalists who sit in the vintage camp shudder at the ‘new’ models but I say they are still a Mustang. With the introduction of the Mustang to Virgin Australia’s V8 supercar series as well, there’s a lot for the Mustang fans to be happy about. Even though it’s pretty much a different breed under the hood, it’s still one of the world’s most popular brands. What I love about the Mustang is how you can, as someone on the street, involve yourself with such a great car. Anyone with the tin can get behind the wheel and be Steve McQueen; the roads aren’t long enough and the speed limit is a bit low, but it’s a pure pleasure to drive. The torque on the GT even surprised me as the back

end swung out a bit leaving the hotel, so it’s not a pussy cat drive; it’s a real driving machine. Pushing the foot to the floor, legend has it that you can be doing the speed limit in under four seconds; Porsche fans eat your heart out. Its acceleration skills and its steering-assist make it a tiger on a good open road. Returning to the QT in Queenstown after putting the Mustang GT Fastback through its paces, Tom from Ford walked round the car to check for any damage. He stopped at the front wheel, bent down and said, “Bit of brake dust there Nick?” Yes Tom, that’s what they are for. Two beautiful experiences together – Queenstown and an open road with the Ford Mustang V8 GT Fastback. What more could an automotive fan want?

cutting it
Still
By Ben Selby
Ever popular and so widely loved by Kiwi motorists, the Subaru Outback has been around for quite a while. In fact, so long that it would come as no surprise to find Napoleon had one in his garage. Armstrong Subaru allowed me to experience the new facelifted Outback for 2018 and I am happy to report that it can still cut it.
P
rices start at $44,990 for the 2.5i Sport and finish at the 3.6R Premium ($59,990). My test car was the 2.5i Premium at $49,990; a 2.5-litre version of Subaru’s trademark four pot boxer engine, producing 129kW/235Nm while returning 7.3L/100km respectively. Subaru’s proven Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and six-speed Linatronic SLT gearbox complete the technical ensemble. The Outback now features on board Apple Car Play and Android Auto, along with ‘Eyesight Driver Assist’. This contains adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and lane keep assist, keeping you on the straight and narrow, while Subaru’s pre collision breaking will bring you to halt in an emergency.
Head and legroom is very generous for front and rear passengers and its 512 litres of boot space grows to 1801 litres with seats folded flat. Some of the switchgear feels a tad underwhelming
What you see is what you get but every feature, from the infotainment system to the HUD, is easy to operate and understand.

On the move, the quality of ride is the first thing you notice. The Outback’s 213mm of ground clearance means dirt and gravel roads are of little concern. Around town, despite the slight girth of the Outback, it never feels unwieldy. Open road cruising is an effortless pastime and, when off the beaten track, Subaru’s X-Mode function with hill descent control allows you to climb every mountain and ford every stream. What you see with the 2018 Subaru Outback is what you get, it doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. What it is though, is a practical, well equipped, and rather refined go anywhere vehicle. Maybe a tad too agricultural for some, but the Outback is almost all the car you could ever need.
