ith Canterbury Fashion Week next week, and our latest cover a fashionable nod to what we can expect from this year's show, I've been thinking quite a lot about the subject. Generating billions of dollars per annum in New Zealand, fashion is the untameable beast at the heart of consumer culture. The chameleon like nature of the industry keeps loyalists to 'what's hot and what's not' on their toes, and leaves the rest of us who consider ourselves a 'work in progress' rather perplexed. All of this 'threads and kicks' talk has inspired some nostalgic and rather cringeinducing memories for me as I reflect on my style – or rather unstylish evolution. PHANTOM BILLSTICKERS
NATIONAL POETRY DAY By Céline Gibson
Celebrated on the last Friday of August, Phantom Billstickers National Poetry Day (NPD) has been running continuously since 1997. It brings with it a myriad of events up and down the country (NPD 2016 saw up to 100 events), where the genre of poetry is expanded and explored by means of poetry slams, flash readings, and pop-up events that take place in venues such as schools, libraries, bars, galleries, surf clubs and parks.

n May 24, to mark the 20th anniversary of NPD, the 20/20 Collection was launched. Twenty acclaimed Kiwi poets were asked to choose one of their own poems, plus select one other by a poet that they viewed as essential reading. The resulting 20/20 Collection is an inspirational representation of our finest in contemporary national literature. The 20/20 Collection will be published in groups of ten poems between now and NPD, and features a luminary line-up including Apirana Taylor and Kiri Piahana Wong; Andrew Johnston and Bill Nelson; Bill Manhire and Louise Wallace; Cilla McQueen and David Holmes, and from our own Ōtautahi, Christchurch, highly respected poets James Norcliffe and Marisa Capetta. Paula Morris, NPD spokesperson for the New Zealand Books Awards Trust, that govern and administer National Poetry Day, said she was “excited to see the range of voices selected, and the ethnic and geographic diversity in the poets chosen by our twenty established writers. This list speaks to a ‘new’ New Zealand literature, and reflects how much our culture is changing and growing.” Phantom Billstickers are a street poster company, now into their second year of naming rights sponsorship of National Poetry Day. Since 1982, Phantom has actively promoted New Zealand art, music, poetry and culture. Info: poetryday@nzbookawards.org.nz and poetryday.co.nz.

REAL ESTATE WISDOM
is sage opinion helps clients glean the best outcome. Cameron states, “A great agent doesn’t sit back and wait for things to happen, but rather creates sales. There’s a huge difference between agents and their modus operandi.” Cameron stresses that premiums are still available in the Canterbury market right now, if sellers choose their consultant well, and the consultant gets the process right. One question sellers should ask themselves is whether those working for you are creating a platform of competition. Auctions are a successful way to do this, but only in the context of diligent, intelligent marketing; something Cameron excels at. He recommends a determined marketing program that identifies both current buyers and those who take action when very specific properties appear. He calls these ‘unconscious buyers’. Outstanding agents allow buyers to feel comfortable and confident about the property they’re interested in. If two parties want to buy a property on the day, the competition element focuses everyone on achieving the purchase of that property, rather than on preconceived ideas of value. Cameron had a good example recently in Strowan, where a great property attracted nine bidders and a top result for his sellers. If you want to deal with the market leader, contact Cameron today.
When Cameron Bailey shares his advice, it makes sense to listen. He’s not only the number one salesperson in Canterbury; he’s also the top residential sales consultant in New Zealand for Harcourts!

WE LIKE LOVE ISAAC Metropol talks the ins and outs of a day in the life of Isaac and how Isaac Likes stormed onto the scene, never looking back.
Tell us about how Isaac Likes came to be When I was 18 I volunteered at New Zealand Fashion Week driving the VIP guests from show to show and it was a life changing moment for me — I knew I wanted to be involved in that world in a professional capacity. So over the next couple of years I moved up the ranks and became a PA to the VIP guests, then when I was about 21 years old I decided to fly over to Sydney to check their Fashion Week out and I pitched a story to FQMen to write a diary of my experience. That’s when I started writing professionally for the first time. Fast forward a few years and I felt like I had a lot to say for myself but I was always being toned down or politically corrected by editors, so I started my own thing. I started writing opinion pieces and breaking news on the site, and there was nothing else of that kind in New Zealand at the time, so it took off. Ten months in I broke the story of my career that ACP Media was shutting down its websites division and firing all those staff, and it became a national scoop — which was denied in the press by ACP’s CEO, which led to me being fired from my day job as the Market Editor of Urbis Magazine, which became another national story because I was the first blogger in New Zealand history to lose his job for writing something online. A couple of days later I booked a flight to Paris to go to Fashion Week there and never looked back.
H
e’s definitely not a conformist; he shuns political correctness; lives in NYC DJing, modelling and delivering pearls of relationship wisdom to a global
audience through his blog Isaac Likes. Yes, it’s official, Kiwi-expat Isaac Hindin-Miller, is living the dream. And that’s before you consider the fact he works with some of the world’s most prestigious brands including YSL, Calvin Klein, Coach, Tiffany & Co and Adidas. See for yourself here www.isaaclikes.com and here www.isaaclikesjenny.com.
How much has serendipity versus strategy played a role in what has been an enviable career journey thus far? I subscribed to the Woody Allen philosophy that 80 percent of success is showing up. It’s always worked that way for me. I’m not a particularly structured person or a particularly organised person, but I’ve always had the drive to go places other people might not, and that’s been the thing that’s gotten me the furthest. Whether it was Milan/Paris/New York Fashion Week, or attempting to interview people like Kanye West, or getting signed by agents here in NYC, none of it would have been possible without me actually being on the ground in the moment.

What are some of your most memorable experiences while working in the blogosphere? Having access to the world’s top fashion shows and traveling all over the globe has been an amazing experience, but to be honest the glamour and excitement of it all wears off after a while and the things you really remember are the personal connections you make with people along the way. My favorite part of the job these days is the relationship advice I write and the fact that strangers from all over the world write to me with their extremely personal love dilemmas and ask me what I’d do if I was in their position. That’s a real privilege for me. Who have been some of your favourite encounters along the way? Meeting Kanye West was always a huge deal for me, it happened a few times in Paris and New York and one time I absolutely flipped my wig and couldn’t stop hugging him but I’m slightly SLIGHTLY cooler these days. Now that my work is mainly as a DJ I get to play for crowds that have included Justin Timberlake, Leonard DiCaprio, The Chainsmokers, Rita Ora, Luka Sabbat and Virgil Abloh. Seeing people going crazy to the music we’re playing is pretty much the best feeling I’ve ever experienced. The blogosphere has absolutely exploded since you arrived on the scene back in 2008, what are your views on its future? These days it’s all about Instagram — that’s where the money is. I just feel like the whole scene has reached critical mass and everyone’s attention spans are about two seconds long. At some point I hope people will get back into longer pieces of writing and more thoughtful content than an iPhone photo. But who knows. I can’t complain — it’s how I get paid. But as someone who comes from a writing background, it has been slightly disheartening to see that nobody cares about the words as much as they care about a pretty image. I imagine it’ll get bigger and bigger and more and more lucrative and then one day it’ll pop. Or maybe not. It remains to be seen. Tell us about what a day in the life of you looks like I wake up, pray and meditate, drink a protein shake, go to the gym, go to a meeting, come home, shower and eat breakfast. Depending on the day, I might shoot photos, or go to therapy, or DJ a party, or run around the city going to all the different events, then back home to sleep.
I SUBSCRIBED TO THE WOODY ALLEN PHILOSOPHY THAT 80 PERCENT OF SUCCESS IS SHOWING UP. What attracted you to NYC? The opportunities are endless — if you can dream it and you’re willing to work for it, you’ll probably be able to make money doing it. Also, this is the most positive place I’ve ever lived. Everyone supports each other and collaborates and there is no such thing as tall poppy syndrome. The bigger the personality, the better the response. Where to from here? More DJing, more shoots, more travel, and definitely more relationship advice.

CAPTURING THE COSMOS By Kate Pierson
The Christchurch Art Gallery has managed the impossible – it has captured the cosmos and is giving art-hungry adventurers the chance to get up close and personal with the chaotic world we live in.

ommissioned with the support of the Christchurch Art Gallery Foundation, this major new art piece is by highly acclaimed British artist Bridget Riley. Aptly titled Cosmos, the piece conveys a powerful experience through its use of simple shapes, arrangements and colour. Christchurch Art Gallery Director Jenny Harper comments, “The Gallery has the special privilege of sharing Cosmos, and nine other incredible Riley works, with everyone who comes through our doors between now and 12 November. “The word cosmos refers to the universe being seen as a well-ordered, harmonious system, which, when you approach the painting, is how it appears – a collection of small, equally spaced discs arranged as a large rectangle. “As you look closer and more
deliberately, however, you can’t help but search for a pattern amongst the colours and their random distribution. It’s a powerful take on the sometimes chaotic world in which we live, and a reminder that we are all part of a much larger whole.” Having found her glory on the British arts scene in the sixties with striking black and white paintings, Riley’s experimentation with abstraction has transcended an illustrious career of almost six decades. Over the last 10 years, Riley’s works have sold for as much as $7 million, placing her among the top 10 most expensive female artists. Cosmos joins the Art Gallery’s three other major acquisitions to date - Martin Creed’s Everything is Going to Be Alright, Bill Culbert’s Bebop, and Michael Parekowhai’s bronze bull Chapman’s Homer. T
he work of Spanish born, New York based artist, Antonio Murado, is a particularly powerful example. The fragility, vulnerability and delicacy of his work owes to his subtle surface treatments. Complex and unusual painting techniques are applied such as blowing upon diluted pigments to diffuse them into petal-like forms, and corroding surfaces with turpentine and varnish. There is a subtle palette and meditative mood to his work, which is being generously exhibited as part of The Tannery’s Gow Langsford Gallery Pop Up. Running until Sunday (25 June), a large warehouse space is hosting the brilliant works of Murado (1964), Karl Maughan (1964) and Paul Dibble (1943). Discover their extraordinary versatility for yourself at The Tannery, 200 Cumnor Terrace in Woolston. Open 10am-5pm.

inter is the busiest season for faeries, for they have two balls to prepare for – the Faerie Ball, 1 July at Wunderbar, and the Labyrinth Masquerade Ball in late August. Lily is already flat out sewing faerie frocks, and hot gluing flowers and sequins to hair garlands and wings. “Glue Guns are a faerie’s best friend,” laughs Lily. “They know me by name at Spotlight and Lincraft.” Lily says the Christchurch Faerie Circle began in 2014, and numbers around 18

The Faerie Ball features music by Rhomboid in the first hour, followed by the faeries fluttering onstage to frolic to their favourite faerie music. There will be prizes for best dancer, best costume, and best wings. “Our fundraising balls are about celebration and fun,” says Lily, “We bring all this magic out for one night; it’s the greatest thing!”

HAVING A
BLAST!
“BECAUSE HIS PLAYS NOT ONLY HAVE THAT ‘FEEL GOOD’ FACTOR, THEY HAVE HEART,” SAYS DEREK.
Derek Doddington, Founder and Director of Top Dog Theatre Company, and recent recipient of an MNZM ( Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit) for services to theatre, acknowledges a soft spot for John Godber, “Because his plays not only have that ‘feel good’ factor, they have heart,” says Derek.
Up‘n’ Under is a comedy play that begins with painter/decorator Arthur getting into an argument with Reg, the coach of rugby league champions the ‘Cobblers Arms’, which ends with Arthur declaring he could train any team to beat the ‘Cobblers Arms’, and will stake his house on it. Unfortunately, Reg nominates the ‘Wheatsheaf Arms’ - renowned for losing every game. “This play asks the universal question,” says Derek, “What are the chances of the underdog becoming the champion?”

Up ‘n’ Under reunites Derek with actors Tom Trevella, Aaron Boyce and Dan Crossen for the first time in twelve years. “They last acted together in 2005 for our Summer Shakespeare at Mona Vale,” says Derek. “It’s a blast having the old gang reunited.” The rest of the cast comprises Darren Sundborn, Dougal Frame and Miriam van Voorthuizen, who plays the role of kind-hearted Hazel, a fitness studio owner who is determined to get the ‘Wheatsheaf Arms’ boys back in shape. Top Dog Theatre will once again be partnering with LAF (Lyttelton Arts Factory) for the staging of this production; it’s a good relationship that Derek is keen to develop in the future. N HOW TO GROW AN
EXPO!
In 2011, Nic Foster, Chairperson of the Regional Art Development Initiative (RADi) compiled the Nelson Arts Guide, a superbly presented book on some of the best cultural treasures found in the region. Fired by its success, Nic envisaged Nelson hosting an art expo - then he thought of all the contacts inside the book.
Info: www.artexponelson.co.nz
ow looking to celebrate Art Expo Nelson 2017, with over 1,500 artworks from the cream of Aotearoa’s painters, sculptors, jewellers, glassworkers and photographers, Nic must feel extremely proud of all he and his team have achieved. Numbered amongst the national exhibitors are Galina Kim, Jane Blackmore, Sue Lund and multi-media abstract artist Anna Stitchbury, while Barb Lawson, Lee-Anne Dixon and Ken Laws make up some of the Nelson exhibitors. “Our curated expos are renowned for their point of difference – every year we ramp it up a notch,” says Nic. “This year features a forum with two guest speakers, one of whom is Will Korner from the Art Loss Register (ALR).” The ALR is the world’s largest private database of lost and stolen art, antiques and collectables. “It was quite a coup to get Will. His inside knowledge is fascinating – such as the stolen art works retrieved after Nazi occupation.” Art Expo Nelson 2017 will be held in the recently refurbished, earthquake strengthened Trafalgar Centre, and runs for three days: Fri 18 Aug 2017, 10am–6pm Sat 19 Aug 2017, 10am–6pm Sun 20 Aug 2017, 10am–4pm

WHERE
PEOPLE & PETS COME FIRST The role our pets play in our lives is nothing short of significant. For many of us, they become an integral part of our family and the memories we create together last a lifetime.
I
t’s no surprise, therefore, that medical care for our special fur-friends is of paramount importance. We endeavour to engage with a veterinary practice that is not only practicing modern medicine, but is genuinely passionate about its work. Ourvets is exemplary on both counts. With a number of branches across Christchurch, the equipment and services available to the Ourvets group is extensive. These include ultrasonography, CT (only small-animal machine in the South Island), digital radiographs, endoscopy and dental radiography. Each clinic is equipped with in-house laboratory, emergency and critical care equipment. Working with this cutting-edge technology are experienced orthopedic veterinarians Dr Geoff Mehrtens and Dr John Ingles who are able to perform a wide range of advanced techniques.
Additionally, Dr Richard Lucy is one of the most experienced cardiorespiratory vets in the South Island. The doctors are able to perform a wide range of advanced treatments including having the ability and facilities to perform chemotherapy. Ourvets is justly proud of its purposebuilt clinic in Riccarton that re-opened in 2015 following the earthquakes. The clinic was specifically designed for veterinary use and all that is required for day to day care of pets. There is a unique, speciallyconstructed radioactive iodine ward for specialised treatment of hyperthyroidism in cats as well as well as Kitty City Hotel (a home away from home for your cat) for spacious and affordable short or long term stay. On Saturday 12 August, an exciting opportunity awaits for the public to look around the clinic and cattery in Riccarton. There will be a number of representatives

T
he marriage of sport and style has, in fact, done such a good job at capturing popular imagination, that it has given rise to a niche category of clothing – ‘athleisure’. We briefly touched on this concept on page 26 of our 8 June issue, and felt given its cult status, it was only right to pay the sartorial genre some merited lip service. It seems to be the zeitgeist of 2016/2017 although its origins date back to the seventies.

It seems to be the zeitgeist of 2016/2017 although its origins date back to the seventies. A portmanteau – the coming together of athletics and leisure – athleisure has been the IT-Kid for some time now with the High Street cashing in on the concept. Look at Kanye West’s Yeezy collections right through to retail giants like Reebok and Lululemon; the so-called ‘couture paired with comfort’ phenomenon has shown it is more than capable of going the distance. While athleisure is seemingly rooted in practicality, not everything that has made the conceptual cut would be appropriate apparel for a lifestyle that is rough and ready. However, it’s certainly made to measure for those who want to look fabulous at the intersection of fitness and fashion.

IN THE
BEAUTY BOX By Kate Pierson
While the temptation exists to abandon all beauty rituals in the face of seasonally induced ‘hibernation mode’; treat winter as an opportunity to lavish some TLC on skin and hair.
T
he cooler temperatures may be harder on our physical wellbeing, but we’ve never shied away from a challenge. In this spirit, here’s a rundown of our beauty box goals.
1.
Native Rituals Coconut Milk Bath: it’s got looks and mad-skills when it comes to working magic on the skin. What’s not to love? Embrace this magnesium enriched concoction of vegan coconut milk, Halloysite clay from Matauri Bay and effervescent sodium bicarbonate for silky smooth skin that glows.
2. Gruff Soap: three big ticks for this natural wonder – it’s 100 percent organic; doesn’t test on animals; and uses natural oils, ingredients and fragrances. All praise!
3. Triumph & Disaster Shampoo. This bold tamer of tresses is a melting pot of all things magical – soft notes of mint are mixed with all sorts of yummies like date, pepper, keratin and Argan oil. Your scalp will love you for it thanks to its moisturising, cleansing and calming qualities. Available from collected.co.nz.

FOR THE LOVE OF
SCARVES I love a good scarf. It can be the perfect full-stop to winter dressing and make your coat feel complete. That said, undue scarves can also be the root cause of clutter in the most discerning of wardrobes. Here’s how to find your perfect match.
Cashmere & Wool: Natural fibres will always trump man-made when it comes to scarves. They drape better around the neck and funnily enough are designed to keep you warm. This also comes with a buy-less, buy-better philosophy. Many of us have mountains of scarves collected from trips away which never see the light of day because they are too bright, too patterned and all too reflective of a holiday market that swept us off our feet. Sound familiar? If this is you, consider stripping back to 2-3 quality scarves in classic designs that can be styled with everything – rather than a United Nations festival of scarves, which looked fabulous in that boho boutique, but that’s where the story ended. Hot tip: A good quality cashmere scarf should fit through the eye of a woman’s ring.
2.
Scarf length and width: A scarf too short in length makes for awkward tying and can leave you feeling lacklustre. Scarf width determines how bulky the scarf will appear around your neck. Taller people can get away with extra bulk in this area – just be mindful of limits. Also be wary of scarves (and coats for that matter) which physically weigh you down. Ask yourself – are you wearing this scarf, or is the scarf wearing you?
3.
Wardrobe suitability: Do you have any colours or clothes that will coordinate with the scarf in question? A scarf is designed to accessorise an outfit, not the other way around.

Pictured: Bridget wears grey marl/lilac merino and cashmere scarf from The Luxury Cashmere Company, $165.
Red flags:
4.
Acrylic: Nothing good will come from a scarf made out of acrylic. It won’t keep you warm, sweats easily (at the first sign of heat), and can look tired after just a few washes. Even in warmer months, suggest cotton or silk over acrylic in scarves – always.
5.
Tassels on cheap scarves: These are a dead ringer for a poor quality scarf as they can fray with washing and make you look like an old teddy left out in the rain. For the budget conscious, opt for scarves without tassels, or at least tassels that have some interest and will hold their form after washing.
Two failproof ways to tie a scarf:
1.
The slip knot. Take your scarf and fold in half lengthways, tie around your neck, then slip the ends through the loop. Note – best suited on longer scarves that are not too wide.
2.
The double knot. 1) Drape your scarf around your neck with one end longer than the other. Bring the longest end up and loop it around your neck and down again. 2) Tie one end over the other so that the longest end is below. www.magpiestyle.co.nz

Is something missing? What changes might we have the power to make, which will offer solutions, and increased happiness?” Sheila has seen an increase in depression and anxiety occurring together in our city six-plus years post-quakes. She says bad moods or prolonged feelings of tiredness are often warning signals that people should explore the ways ahead.

WHAT IS
NASH? INSIGHT AND ADVICE FROM SOUTHERN CLINICAL TRIALS
Non-alcoholic (NASH) is fatty liver disease due to causes other than alcohol. NASH was first described in 1980 in a series of patients of the Mayo Clinic. Its relevance and high prevalence were recognised mainly in the 1990s.
N
ASH is estimated to occur in five percent of the adult population and can progress to fibrosis and eventually cirrhosis. Now that huge treatment advances have been made in treating and curing Hepatitis C, NASH is predicted to become the leading cause of liver disease requiring liver transplantation.
NASH IS PREDICTED TO BECOME THE LEADING CAUSE OF LIVER DISEASE REQUIRING LIVER TRANSPLANTATION.
How do I know if I might have NASH? Fatty liver typically has no associated symptoms. You may experience fatigue or vague abdominal discomfort. Your liver may become slightly enlarged, and your doctor can detect this during a physical exam. Fatty liver is more common in people with Type 2 Diabetes. If you have Type 2 Diabetes, you are overweight, and your doctor has told you that your liver function blood test is abnormal, then it is quite likely you might have NASH.
Simple Treatments Dramatic Results • Laser hair removal • Cosmetic injectables • Red vein & pigmentation removal
What can I do if I have NASH? No pharmacological treatment has received approval as of 2015 for NASH. Some studies suggest diet, exercise, and oral diabetic medication may alter the course of the disease. General recommendations include losing weight, exercise, changing to a low fat diet and reducing alcohol intake.
Have you been diagnosed with a fatty liver? Do you also have Type 2 Diabetes AND are overweight? If yes, you may be eligible to participate in a clinical research study of a new drug to treat Fatty Liver that is being conducted at Southern Clinical Trials. The new drug is a tablet taken once a day along with your current medication.

F
rom the moment you meet the experienced Dean, with 15 years in the industry, it’s evident his passion lies in imbuing clients with a radiant confidence –in terms of their aesthetic, and how they work with their hair on a daily basis. This is a philosophy that is shared and embraced by colleagues Julie, Belinda, Kat & Jess, who jointly covet a century of experience. Rubbing shoulders with Merivale, close by to Strowan and Papanui, the boutique salon offers excellent parking, a ‘walk in’ service (although appointments are always recommended), and easy access to beautiful cafes and retailers, so clients can make a day of treating themselves. “Our vibe is definitely high-fashion, but very inclusive,” confirms salon co-owner Erin. “We aim to be welcoming, never pretentious, and love working with different people and hair.” Dean adds, “We start every appointment with a style consultation where we discuss with the client what they want to achieve before helping them to determine what will work best with their personal look and lifestyle. “While we always invite people to bring in pictures of the look they want to achieve, we will always be open and honest in guiding clients towards something that will work for them.” A Joico salon, Holmwood & Rossall also works with Ethique and Olapex products to ensure hair and colour is treated with the utmost respect. Since 1960 the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation has funded more than $20 million in health research in the Canterbury area. The mission of the Foundation is to fund new research that will make a difference to people’s lives, now and for future generations.
Each year, the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation (CMRF) runs a Wine and Art Auction to raise funds for a specific medical research project being run here in Canterbury.
P
ast winners of the grant have included, The Rose Centre for Stroke Recovery and Research, Professor Frank Frizelle’s Colorectal Cancer Project and Doctor Julia Rucklidge’s work in treating children with ADHD with micronutrients (as featured on TV One’s “Sunday” programme). This year, the Foundation has selected the work of Professor Stephen Chambers at the University of Otago Medical School. Professor Chambers is working to discover why we have such high rates of Legionnaire’s disease here in Canterbury and what we can do to keep gardeners safe from the bacteria that causes it given that it is so common in our composts and potting mix. Legionnaires’ disease is the most common cause of severe pneumonia in Canterbury from November to February, with 30 percent of patients needing intensive care treatment and 10 percent dying. Its importance was first demonstrated in Christchurch but high rates occur across New Zealand. Most of these cases are associated with gardening, especially with the use of compost or potting mix. Legionnaires’ disease should be preventable, but cases still occur frequently. To find out when and why legionella organisms thrive in soils, creating the risk to gardeners, Professor Chambers’ group has developed new tests for environmental organisms.
THESE STUDIES WILL SHOW US THE CONDITIONS THAT ALLOW LEGIONELLA TO THRIVE, HOW ORGANISMS ARE TRANSMITTED, AND HELP US PREVENT INFECTIONS.
PROFESSOR STEPHEN CHAMBERS
PROTECTING CANTERBURY’S GARDENERS
PROFESSOR CHAMBERS AND STAFF SAMPLING COMMERCIAL COMPOST.
With these tests they will determine legionella survival and growth in potting mix, compost and soils, on hands, and in airborne particles under controlled conditions. They will also study Christchurch-wide private compost heaps, stored potting mix, and commercial gardening products from September to February when the risk is greatest.
RESEARCH SAVES LIVES The risk to gardeners and garden product manufacturers’ staff across Christchurch will then be determined. These studies will show us the conditions that allow legionella to thrive, how organisms are transmitted, and help us prevent infections. It is the group’s hope that a partnership between researchers and gardeners will promote safer gardening city-wide and across New Zealand. You can read more about the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation and the important medical research it supports, by visiting the website at www.cmrf.org.nz or following the foundation on Facebook. Canterbury Medical Research Foundation has funded more than 26 million in research grants since it began in 1960 through the work and passion of the late Professor Don Beaven and a group of committed Rotarians. There are also some great added features including updated menus and longer open hours. New Manager, Ethan Xiao, says Country Oven’s new mission is to provide great food that is fresh, with tasty flavours, is high in quality – both in ingredients and presentation – and of a quantity that guarantees great value. “Stocked in the food cabinets are now more pies, such as steak pepper, chicken mushroom, and chicken cheese cranberry. Try the new butter chicken pie, too. There are more sandwiches, and rolls filled with BBQ pork, pulled pork, and pulled beef, with featured Turkish bread as well. Everything is baked and made daily on-site.”

Roasts come in two sizes, and at $12.80 and $16.80, they offer excellent dining value. Dine in the warmth of the fireplace until 7pm every night of the week. THE CREATIVE OF
ART INK
S
Tattoos are in! Okay, they’ve been in for a while, but more recently this form of art has evolved, become more sophisticated and socially acceptable.
teve Purtle, owner and head artist at NZ Ink Tattoo Studio in Rangiora has been an artist for most of his life. He has perfected the art of tattooing over the last 17 years, and continues to gather a loyal client base that would recommend him and his studio. He is, quite simply, very good at what he does. Two years ago, Steve and his soon-to-be wife, Trudi, bought the business he had been employed in for several years, renamed it, and it’s proved to be very successful. Steve specialises in custom design and, if needed, can draw freehand on your skin as part of the free consultation process to give you an idea of overall look. Soon after starting, the business added body piercing to its list of services. Trudi has been piercing for a long time, is very experienced and, as far as she knows, is the only Body Piercer in Rangiora. The $20 price includes surgical stainless piercing jewellery or titanium as another option. Recently, NZ Ink added laser tattoo removal to its business. A free consultation is necessary to discuss options and answer any questions. Price is determined by tattoo size. Rates are competitive, but colour, age and location on the body can affect the number of sessions required, also whether you want it totally removed or lightened so it can be covered by a new Tattoo. Contact NZ Ink Tattoo Studio on its Facebook page.

THE RIGHT
CELEBRANT
By Kineta Booker
Dressing beautifully, spending precious time with your family and friends, drinking champagne, and laughing and enjoying your day away is exactly what you should look forward to at your wedding. But don’t forget to make it legal! Book a celebrant.
I
f you think it’s a bit of a drag meeting lots of celebrants to find the right fit for you, here’s a few tips to see who could make a short list before you even start approaching people:
1.
Weddings Private Functions Corporate Events
Check out their website: What’s it like? Is it engaging? Informative? Do they have a calendar? Are they available on your wedding date?
2.
Check their Facebook: Do they sound and look interesting? What’s their feedback like? How do they communicate and talk with others on their Facebook page?
3.
Are they a member of CANZ (Celebrants Association of New Zealand)? You should find this information on their website, if not, look them up on www.celebrantsassociation.co.nz. It’s not mandatory for a celebrant to be a member, but it’s a professional group, and they support celebrants to deliver high-quality services
View our 360° Tour 100 Old Tai Tapu Road, Halswell, Christchurch office@rossendale.co.nz www.rossendale.co.nz Phone 03 322 7780
By finding out a little bit about each celebrant on their website and Facebook page, it gives you insight into what they’re like, rather than just a name on a computer screen.
Once you’ve set a time to meet here are some things to think about:
1.
Do you like them? Do they seem caring and kind? Obvious questions, but you’ve got to like them because they’ll be there when you’re most vulnerable – standing in front of many people, speaking your vows and saying “I do”
2.
Are they warm and friendly? It’s not just you and your bridal party that will spend time with them, it’s your families and your guests too before you arrive
3.
Are they enthusiastic and do they listen to what you want? If they don’t think your idea will work, they’re not right for you. It is your day, and a good celebrant will want you to fulfill your dream of 100 kittens walking you down the aisle
do they charge, and what do they 4. What offer as part of their fee? Is it within your budget? Maybe it’s $50 or $100 more than you’d hoped, but my advice is go for them if they’re your perfect match.

something a little different – our customers are always very surprised and delighted when they see their dish.” Dumplings are the star of the show at MK – bigger and better than what you’ve seen before, with tastes from around the globe. From Italian-style, Polish, and Japanese Gyoza, the menu also features a range of sweet dumpling dishes for dessert, which have been described as ‘epic’. The tasty fruit fillings include blueberry, strawberry, or apple, banana and cinnamon – served with ice cream and a special molecular gastronomy sponge. RECIPES FOOD WINE BARS & CAFÉS RESTAURANTS
CLICQUOT IN THE SNOW By Nicholas Henare
One of the top events of last year for me was Clicquot in the Snow down in Queenstown. The food at Rata Dining with Chef Josh Emett was one of the finest lunches I’ve ever had and I caught up with Josh to field some questions on this year’s spectacular event.
As part of the Clicquot in the Snow celebrations this year you are hosting two Clicquot Long Lunches at Rata, how do you go about pairing food to champagne? Yes, we are delighted to be hosting two four course lunches on Friday 4 August and Saturday 5 August. This involves a lot of champagne tasting, which is the fun part, and then plenty of discussion around what we think will work with the different flavour profiles we get from the champagne. Then, we cook some of the dishes and taste them with the champagne together.
What dishes might we expect on the long lunch menu this year? I think one thing people don’t usually expect to see when they think champagne is red meat dishes, but it is amazing what flavours can work with a great champagne like Veuve Clicquot. It is winter, so think delicious slow braised beef for main course perhaps and a light shellfish dish to start. Long Lunch tickets can be purchased from Rata for $160, including champagne. Contact 03 442 9393 and bookings@ratadining.co.nz.
What are your top five tips for cooking with champagne? 1. Do a thorough tasting of the champagne before you begin 2. Fish is an obvious match with champagne, so a good place to start with ideas 3. Don’t start with overly elaborate dishes, rather begin with an idea and layer it as you go along 4. Seasoning, fat content of dishes, and acid levels (lemon, lime, vinegar) can all make a big difference to a pairing working well 5. Don’t be afraid to try anything, champagnes can be very versatile and work very well with red meat dishes as well like Veuve Clicquot. Make sure you understand the champagne characteristics. Your restaurant Rata in Queenstown has just celebrated its 5th birthday, what inspired you to launch Rata in 2012? I was living overseas and wanted to open a restaurant of my own in New Zealand and loved Queenstown as a location. I had met Fleur Caulton when she invited me down to do a dinner at Amisfield and we clicked, so decided to open something together. We shared a lot of the same ideas, so did a trip to New York to eat and discuss the idea. The rest, as they say, is history.

WHISKY WONDERS Nicholas Henare
To be honest I’m rather pleased. Amazed, even. Often, I’ve driven over the over bridge at Tower Junction and gazed down upon the massive Rimu barrels at 26 Lowe Street and thought, ‘I wonder what that is?’
T
urns out, it’s what I consider to be the best distillery this side of Scotland. I dropped into Workshops Whisky after being told it was ‘a must see for a whisky aficionado’. I caught up with Anthony and Doug Lawry and as it transpires, the whole Lawry clan are working in the distillery to produce what I can only term as ‘Amber Gold’. They have been perfecting it with the help of Michael from Whisky Galore. Anthony says, “We have released our whisky at Whisky Galore; Michael and his team have been an integral part of our journey. Michael said to us early on before we released our first whisky to believe in what we have produced; listen to feedback, but not change too much; and that we have the key ingredient of passion that can be missed sometimes.” The cellaring of the whisky is quite an eye to behold at Workshops Whisky and ‘The Angels’ Share’ seems to permeate the room. I also noticed the barrels were virgin, whereas usually you are after an old red wine/bourbon barrel when aging whisky. Anthony explains, “We are using virgin French oak barrels from France. The main reason we went with virgin wood was that we believed that we needed to know what our whisky would taste like with no influence from the barrels.”

It’s what I consider to be the best distillery this side of Scotland. I’m really impressed with the attitude of the distillers and the whisky produced. It’s great to see them producing whisky to try and create a New Zealand style that is made with Canterbury water; Canterbury grown and malted barley; equipment made in Canterbury, with stills and brewing equipment all made on site. It’s a key part of their story that has now become their passion and now, mine. I would advise getting a bottle to try from Whisky Galore at $98. It’s the perfect gift for anyone but now New Zealand has a distillery that can hold its own against the rest of the world. I could go on and on about how their whisky tastes but you really need to try this ambrosia for yourself. Sla’inte. Visit www.workshopswhisky.com. Metropol June 22, 2017 49
EMPOWERED,
EDUCATED EATING The yo-yo dieting trend is a global phenomenon. Many of us are still dumbfounded when it comes to holistic, balanced eating. I was, until I met Mark Macdonald, world renowned nutrition and fitness expert.
A
best-selling author, Mark is the driving force behind Jeunesse’s newest weight management product, the cutting-edge Zen Project 8 Program. Mark’s food philosophy focuses on the rule of thirds – or PFC (protein, fat and carbs), eating every three hours, and not counting calories. More here: zenproject8.com. On a whirlwind visit to Christchurch, Mark accompanied me to some of Christchurch’s favourite cafes, educating and empowering me on how to order PFC-style.

Raeward Fresh Cafe, 800 Harewood Road Mark describes Raewood Fresh as “A safe haven of the highest quality foods you can get”. “For breakfast it would be the open omelet (protein) with veges (carbs), Dukkah eggs or the eggs bene. You could have avocado or cheese for fat. You could have bread, but if you wanted a clean eat, substitute the bread for fruit or veges. It’s about swapping a dense carb for a healthier, simple carb. “The Acai Bowl offers a great antioxidant boost countering free radicals and you can add a shot of protein for a further boost.” For lunch Mark tells me salad is King – specifically the Boss Lady Salad and Chicken Caesar Salad. “Opt for the dressing on the side.”

Dux Dine, 28 Riccarton Road Nestled in its pristine historical Villa, Dux Dine is more than just a pretty face. Mark immediately identifies a number of healthy standouts on the breakfast menu including organic scrambled eggs with slow roasted tomatoes or a side of fruit as an alternative. “The organic granola is a great option. Or have the crepe, but add the eggs on the side for protein. You can always have something dessert like and then add protein to it. But fill up on the protein first, and then you’ll feel like less dessert. “When it comes to lunch, a deli salad with a protein side is a great choice. Or the fish of the day, baked, with a vege medley. Avoid the fries and replace these with quinoa.” Reality Bites, 245A Sawyers Arms Road At local favourite, Reality Bites, Mark is quick to identify a number of items that collectively tick the ‘balanced’ box. “With its vegan salads and vegan soups, plant based food eaters will do well here. The homemade granola and egg options are super clean and healthy, but not as balanced on their own. With veges or fruit you can address that. “This is a popular coffee stop, but coffee suppresses the appetite and then

when people become very hungry all of sudden that’s when they’ll reach for a carb fix like a bagel. Be ready with one of their balanced options. I’d personally opt for the free range eggs with mushrooms and tomatoes, or have some of their fruit as a side. You can have the streaky bacon or a dessert, but go for the protein first.” Columbus Coffee Westfield Riccarton, 129 Riccarton Road It might be located in the hustle and bustle of Westfield Mall, but there is a conscious, considered approach to the food made on site at Columbus Coffee. Mark tells me, “I’m always looking at what I can order fresh. Columbus prepares food from scratch in ten minutes. That’s a small investment of your time. “I’d go for a smoothie any time – and have an extra shot of protein with it. I’d also go for the unique and super-healthy vegetarian or chicken burger – it’s on a coconut black charcoal bun. “Your third option is the free range eggs – the eggs benedict or the paleo breakfast scrambled eggs are super clean and protein packed. What you want to do is avoid lots of fat and starch in your choices.”

A CLEAN GREEN MOTTO There’s nothing like having clean, fresh uniforms and linen every working day – especially when someone else takes care of the dirty laundry.
Q
uality Laundry Services Ltd ensures smaller Christchurch companies can concentrate on doing business - instead of taking the tea towels home to wash. Owner Paul Gray says prices are as cost-effective as they were when the company began in 1995. The pick-up and dropoff service offers a personalised package – from laundering to bathroom and kitchen supplies. A Christchurch based chemist has formulated the specialist eco-friendly industrial cleaning “Ecochem” laundry detergents and soap products. Stain removal is a speciality, without resorting to colour-fading bleach. The largest of the washing machine fleet manages a 70kg load and the Huebsch dryers automate the perfect drying time. Helpful staff members, with many years in the business, provide services ranging from laundering tablecloths for Ballantynes and cafes, to ensuring a constant supply of clean, repaired uniforms and high visibility vests for construction and trades. They will even embroider or print company logos in partnership with Brand HQ. Another invaluable hire option is the anti-fatigue mats which reduce leg tiredness and increase safety and hygiene in wet areas, a common concern in hospitality. Durable, non-slip entrance-way mats, that absorb moisture and oils, can even be company branded. “It’s surprising how many useful services and products we actually offer – we’re essentially a one-stop shop,” Paul says. Visit www.qualitylaundry.co.nz to see a complete list of the extensive services, email qualitylaundryservices@gmail.com or phone 03 374 2188.

DELICIOUS CHANGE The Famous Grouse is about to undergo another major change. The Lincoln pub is under new management and there are some exciting things starting to happen.

ill Stock has been in the hospitality industry in Australia and New Zealand for twenty years. He and his wife, Danielle Tait, who grew up on the West Coast, have taken the helm at the Grouse and are updating the menu and parts of the venue. They’ve added more staff and are changing the way things are done. As Lincoln is growing at a phenomenal rate, the university town is changing. To keep up with the evolving demographic, Will wants to create a more family friendly environment. One change will be a new-look garden bar, upgraded to be more of a relaxing outdoor space that all ages can enjoy. Another change is to the menu. Traditional pub style food will still feature, such as the 350gram Flintstone steak, and chicken wings in a spicy, habanero sauce, but other additions, such as the venison on roast parsnip puree with a blackcurrant

demi will offer a wider choice for diners. Perhaps the most exciting change will be more of a café feel to the pub. Its new brand, Red Bird Espresso, modelled after the iconic bird in the pub’s name, will bring delicious brewed coffees, and cabinet cakes and food to customers who want it to go, or they can sit in and relax for a while. There will also be express lunches. “It’s changed, and everybody’s welcome,” Will says. The Famous Grouse is set to re-establish its reputation in the quickly changing town.

The George Hotel and I go way back. On 1 July the award-winning, boutique hotel is celebrating its 30th anniversary and I was there on day one of this journey.
G
org Spiteri originally hired chefs from the 706 Chefs Guild Training Class to help him clean up the old hotel and 30 years on it’s become an icon of luxury accommodation and functions in our fair city. I’ve got a few George teddy bears, which are bestowed on people who stay at the George, and I’ve got plenty of great, fun memories. The George is celebrating its momentous occasion with a black tie soiree which will encapsulate some of the best moments from the last 30 years with guest chefs and George celebrities to talk through some of the highlights and frivolities that have occurred. I’m sure there will be the odd astonishing 1980s cocktail or two to make the occasion just that touch more retrospective. The Chefs will present some of the signature dishes from the past and tickets are limited. At just $187 for five courses prepared by five chefs, they will be gone quickly, so be in quick. There are also special deals on accommodation priced at $330, so perhaps a special night away for you and a loved one is in order? With Pescatore for dinner and 50 Bistro for lunch, at The George, there is a stunning choice for food and definitely something to put on the bucket list. This luxury hotel has a special connection with Christchurch and for a lot of people, like me, has helped to create some very special memoires. It’s never been just a hotel for visitors to Christchurch; it’s an institution for us to all enjoy. Bon Anniversaire, The George Hotel.

he menu is extensive, with a lengthy list of entrees and sharing plates. Choose one as a starter, or order a selection and dine tapas style. The drinks menu is just as substantial; filled with a good line up of non-alcoholic choices, craft and mainstream tap or bottled beers, ciders and cocktails. There is also a great array of wines, including the popular wine flights, where you can taste three different red or white wines – a great way to sample the various flavours of different varietals and regions. The mains menu is spectacular - succulent steaks cooked to perfection, pork belly, chicken, or fish of the day, as well as value for money favourites such as beef or chicken schnitzel, burgers and pasta. Many are gluten free options, and kids have their own great menu too. Try some of the great lunch specials as well, Friday to Sunday from 12pm. Function rooms for larger groups are available, both at Quartz, and in the Stella Room, next door at The Rock. Contact details are on the website www.quartzrolleston.co.nz. EXTERIORS INTERIORS BUILDING OUTDOORS KITCHENS & BATHROOMS
THE
OUTSIDE ROOM By Kate Pierson
There is great value in having a little nest-egg outside of the traditional living spaces provided by a home. The growing appetite for such a spot has inspired the concept of ‘The Outside Room’.
T
he name gives it all away – it is a space, outside, that provides another avenue for creativity. Some choose to fix the theme of the space, while others let its purpose and potential be dictated by whatever need they may have at the time. The two traditional purposes for The Outside Room are a) to have an extra sleeping quarter for guests or independence-hungry teens and b) a working space that affords peace and quiet – a rare thing with a busy family at home.
The sanctuary of an outside room is simply priceless.

MADE WITH YOU IN MIND
When it’s time to update your kitchen there are really only two choices - install new or remodel the existing one. Adrian and Tammy Kay and the team at Dream Doors Christchurch specialise at doing both.
A
n outdated or poorly designed or constructed kitchen makes life difficult and devalues a house. Adrian specialises in everything from a small kitchen facelift to a brand new kitchen installation, all the while working closely with his clients to do as little or as much as they need.
The company employs qualified installers and joiners who make the kitchens in Christchurch using quality materials. The project is managed by Adrian, from a free measure and quote consultation, to the presentation of a 3D preview. A wide range of quality products are then sourced as necessary. These could be whiteware,
spectacular finishes from formica to engineered stone, or granite bench tops, and then choose from a broad selection of doors, and even colours and handles. People spend a lot of time in their kitchens. The team at Dream Doors wants you to have a kitchen that complements your lifestyle. Pop down to the new showroom in Wigram and have a play with samples, and see what can be achieved. CRAFTING UNIQUE ARCHITECTURE THE TEAM FROM CYMON ALLFREY ARCHITECTS LTD EXPLAIN WHY THE BRIEFING PROCESS IS VITAL TO ENSURING THE SUCCESS OF YOUR BUILDING PROJECT.
F
rom an architectural perspective, the process of creating a built form is deliberate and follows a pattern. The result, however, is always unique as it
is driven and informed by different sets of criteria, each and every time. At Cymon Allfrey Architects, we pride ourselves on our ability to produce buildings
that are completely unique to our clients. There may be small quirks that are identifiable in our designs, but no two projects are comparable. There isn’t a ‘standard’ Cymon Allfrey Architects design, no fundamental blueprint in which we build on and no predetermined ideas. Each design is derived from the specific needs of our clients.

EACH DESIGN IS DERIVED FROM THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF CLIENTS. When first working with you, our client, we ask you to focus on the end result. We want to know your ambitions and aspirations, how you want your new home to feel, what emotions you want the spaces to evoke and why this building project is so important to you. We want to help you imagine the celebratory pinot on the terrace at the completion of your new home. In order to produce the best possible outcome for you, we need to completely understand your needs. By listening and asking questions, we begin to develop a
clear picture of the intricate quirks and idiosyncrasies that form how you live. It is then up to us to convert this into built form. Your project presents us with specific needs, aspirations and challenges. And your unique site helps us to define the way we address your design, taking into consideration the orientation, topography, views, wind and so forth. No two sites are the same – even if they stand side by side. In order to accomplish all of your objectives, we bring together a design team specifically selected for the unique
skills they bring to your project. Our aim is to craft a design that will complement your site whilst enhancing the way you want to live, marrying the two together in perfect harmony. At Cymon Allfrey Architects, we take the time to really get to know you, what you value and how you want to live. As architects and designers, our job is to create a solution that not only meets those needs but also respects the site, what has gone before and the environment in which your home will stand. While we want our architecture to stand out from the crowd and make a statement, we also understand the importance of respecting the surroundings in order to achieve a cohesive and considered insertion into the environment. Although we are often eager to put pen to paper and begin sketching ideas, excited by your site and aspirations, we recognise the value of waiting until we are confident we completely understand your expectations. We take great pleasure in presenting a design that has been well considered and tailored to your specific needs. The initial briefing process is crucially important in ensuring the success of that design. For more about Cymon Allfrey Architects, visit their website www.caarc.co.nz

he owner now is Sue Hauser-Deakin, who makes Kandle Co soy candles. She originally supplied previous owner Gail Harris, who initially created the Scandinavian-styled petite paradise. Sue dreamt of owning it one day, so when it came up for sale last August, four days later it was hers! Sue has always been “a great little shopper” and it’s evident in the personality of the items embellishing the shelves in pastel hues, including Jason giftware and plant hangers, scarves, soaps, cushions, bags, blankets, baskets, jewellery, charming children’s gifts, and of course those exquisitely scented candles and melts. When walking the dog (Sue has dog treats) or lunching at The Cup next door with its city views, it’s impossible to bypass the friendly, inviting space without being intrigued. Winter often has a bad reputation – we talk about the ‘winter blues’; curse the crisper temperatures; pine for the sun to return; and are quick to disregard all of the amazing style prospects it brings our way.

ur habitat is an important consideration when it comes to style savvy winter warmers. From the gown you don when you walk through the door, to the cocoon like throw that becomes your favourite couch companion; there are cosy options to spoil the senses all winter long. Remember the key low-tech tips for keeping a warm home during the chillier temperatures include thick curtains, blocking off minidraughts, covering bare floorboards, and shutting up any unused spaces. In the spirit of a stylish winter, these are our ‘must haves’ for the season.

WHAT PEOPLE WANT! Real estate has its share of ‘I want’ moments: I want a sale, I want a listing, I want that listing, I want this price. The list is a long one, demands coming in from every participant and stakeholder involved in the process of buying and selling real estate. Consultants who want so many things matched by owners who want one very specific thing, and that’s More! This is usually followed by the word ‘Money’. It’s a simple enough request, but like all simple matters, the devil is in not just the detail but the delivery.
The words I don’t hear enough of are, I will: I will do what it takes, I will work longer, harder, smarter, putting your (the clients) interests over my own.
I will turn up on time and market your home with flair and intelligence, chasing every lead till it goes no further. Now some ‘I wills’ from owners. I will take an interest in your recommendations on how to get the best result. I will have my home presented in a manner that will attract buyers and their attention, and if I’ve got it wrong I will take on board what you say. I will provide you with accurate and truthful details about my property and I will not say there is insulation everywhere when there is not, or the underfloor heating is throughout the entire house when it stops at the living room. Here are some buyer ‘I wills’. I will let you know if I no longer want to keep my appointment so you don’t have to spend time and energy on research or drive for miles. I will give you the best brief

I can so that when I ask you to show me three-bedroom townhouses but I buy a two-bedroom villa you understand. Like everyone else, as a stakeholder in this relationship I want things as well. I want the business I’ve worked two decades on and in to stand for something. I want people to be proud to work for it. I want to lead with integrity and inspire standout performance. What are my ‘I wills’? I will work as long and as hard as it takes everyday. I will provide consistent, inspirational leadership, anchored with a commitment to the needs of our team and our clients. And I’ll try to balance the 50 balls I’ve got up in the air without falling over, losing the plot or being hit in the head by one. Not easy!

SAVVY STORAGE By Kate Pierson
‘Storage’ by name and by nature doesn’t carry the sexiest reputation. In our mind’s eye it tends to conjure up images of haphazardly thrown together shelves, or boxes teeming with overflow.

ur recent discoveries will put an end to all of these negative connotations. While it may sound like an oxymoron; we’ve managed to track down stylish storage solutions. Organisation evangelists and hopefuls alike will revel in these visual delights that pack a very practical punch. While the perception may be that storage is a necessary evil, clever design innovations mean these space-savers can now provide an attractive aesthetic as well as helping to declutter your living environments. From floating shelves – as seen in the String Storage Solutions system, to a modern take on the more traditional bookshelf as per the Buster + Punch unit from Trenzseater; there is a myriad of options that will tick all the right boxes.

ow many large office tenants have moved back into the CBD, attention is turning to smaller operators. The next wave of demand for CBD space is coming from owner-occupiers who don’t want or need the big floor plates that were on offer in the more substantial office builds. A prime example of this emerging office space is a new build at 150 Lichfield Street in the Innovation Precinct. Shared office space provider Bizdojo has taken the lion’s share but there are other spaces on offer ranging from 40m2 through to 180m2. The advantage of these tenancies is that additional space is available if required at Bizdojo. Another of these developments is the restoration of the National Bank building opposite Victoria Square. Developers who created the Dux Central hospitality precinct have restored the historic building and are now looking to either sell or lease units. The site was originally earmarked for the city’s new Convention Centre, but the Crown lifted the designation on the property in 2015. Despite talk about an over-supply of CBD office space, it hasn’t really eventuated. The reality is there’s not too much vacant office space in the city core – especially for substantial office tenants. We think it will be another five to 10 years before there are more new builds with large floor plates to accommodate such tenants. Developers won’t be interested in speculating, particularly when banks are being more cautious about funding. In the meantime, we’ll see the organic development of smaller spaces.
I
n my role as Chief Executive of the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce, I spend a lot of time talking at various conferences, to interest groups and to different business sectors (both within New Zealand and abroad) on how the Canterbury community, particularly the business community, managed to ride out the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, and remain strong and vibrant to participate in the regeneration of our city and our region. The subject always generates high interest. The examples of the resilience of Orion (our lines company) and the way it had built redundancy into systems prior to the earthquakes which enabled electricity supply to be re-established reliably and quickly, and Lyttelton Port not missing a day of operations since September 2010, are amazing stories worth telling. The survival rate of businesses in our community post-earthquake is regarded internationally as quite remarkable. There are some very good reasons for that and the earthquake support subsidy is amongst them. We should never underestimate the lessons we have learned and how those lessons can be applied in disaster scenarios here and abroad. Appropriate interventions make an enormous difference to business survival and, therefore, community welfare.
O
ne of the more encouraging business results this year was a 13 per cent lift in profits for Christchurch International Airport. Chief Executive Malcolm Johns attributed this to increases in domestic and international passengers. Good news for Christchurch, with Johns estimating every dollar spent at the airport represents $50 in the local economy. Johns is notable for his ongoing involvement in the tourism sector and his leadership philosophy. The airport team is, he says, in the business of supporting and creating great “passenger journeys”. Far from a piece of infrastructure, the airport is a key contributor to the social and economic wellbeing of Christchurch and the South Island. It is a business approach that resonates well with Arrow as we reflect on six years of “making good” post-earthquakes. It has been quite a journey; the dreariness of the demolition, the gradual rebuilding of essential services, the excitement of new builds, commencement of some “visionary” anchor projects, and now a gradual transition towards relative normality. A principal reason for this transition is increasing private sector confidence translating into construction of new commercial premises, aged-care facilities and visitor venues. Christchurch is reclaiming its place as gateway to the south, and we welcome this return towards business as usual and the opportunities it creates to establish new ways of doing things. We should all be proud of this milestone. However, for those thinking about moving to other centres with building shortages: don’t leave town just yet because this journey is not over, it’s work in progress.

hen presenting Budget 2017, Finance Minister Steven Joyce spoke about New Zealand’s growth and the need for investment in infrastructure, public services and business to support and sustain it. In Canterbury, this carries special meaning. A huge investment has been required to rebuild – and there is still work to do. But the progress is real. Canterbury’s population has topped pre-quake numbers and the economy is growing faster than many other parts of the country. Canterbury’s unemployment rate is below national average – 4 per cent in the latest quarter. Budget 2017 makes further commitments to the region, including new funding of $51 million for Canterbury DHB, bringing total funding to a record $1.5 billion for the coming year. Budget 2017 provides an additional $4 billion across education, health, defence, justice, housing, transport and the primary sector, bringing total infrastructure spend to $32.5 billion over the next four years. This includes $812 million to reinstate State Highway One between Picton and Christchurch, and $450 million in KiwiRail over the next two years to restore the South Island Main Truck Line and the rail track. Almost $5 million is set aside to cover costs associated with the Port Hills fires. This is in addition to other significant local investments, including $1.1 billion in 115 schools; $215 million for the new Burwood Hospital, and $3 million for the Margaret Mahy Family Playground. Our strong economy has made these choices possible. But there is no room for complacency. We need to focus on delivering a strong economy.

or anyone who lives in the more than 30,000 cold, damp houses in Canterbury, it can be a struggle to stay healthy, let alone happy and thriving. Winter is a time when reaching out to others strengthens our community’s mental health. Caring for our most vulnerable is a measure of a healthy society. Canterbury children in need shouldn’t have to wait months to access Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. Long wait times are partly due to chronic underfunding across the health sector. Our public system has been squeezed tight by National’s budget cuts. Budget 2017 compounded this. According to the CTU, our District Health Boards (DHBs) were underfunded by an estimated $152m in 2016. Canterbury DHB remains one of New Zealand’s most pressured and underfunded, classified by Treasury as “in need of attention”. The team at “All Right?” say “psychosocial recovery after a disaster can take five to ten years”. Many of us know first-hand there is the “double-blow” of initial trauma, then “recovery-related issues” such as broken homes and insurance claims. The dedicated and passionate people working within Canterbury’s mental health services deserve a big thank you. We need to support them so they can continue to support our most vulnerable. The Green Party has repeatedly called for a nationwide inquiry into the dire state of New Zealand’s mental health services. The Green Party will increase funding and support for early intervention for children and young people with behavioural and mental health issues. It shouldn’t be one group at the cost of the other.
T
he decision on the Christ Church Cathedral has loomed over the recovery of our city for a long time. The Cathedral was a strong icon of the Cantabrian identity and recognised worldwide as the heart of the city. Today however, it symbolises the slow, staggered recovery. Like all locals, I am frustrated at the lack of progress and committed to getting resolution. This is a deadlock that needs to be broken. It’s an issue that needs strong government figures to pull together to find a solution. In late May, local Labour and Green MPs wrote to the Minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration to seek the establishment of a cross party initiative to identify solutions to the Cathedral deadlock. We were pleased the Minister accepted our offer to work together. The same week, the Government released the Cathedral Working Group report, including the recommendation the building be restored. It’s outlined how the insurance pay-out can be supplemented by government and council funding, with the remainder gathered through fundraising. This shows there is a way forward if the Synod opts for restoration. Recovery in our central city cannot and will not flourish while the Cathedral remains unrepaired, and this isn’t an issue that can be tossed around like a political hot potato. Labour is open to working with all parties and city leaders to get this resolved. The last thing anyone wants to see is the issue tied up in the courts for years. The Cathedral is the heart of our city, and whether it’s a restored Cathedral or a new build, we need to get it beating again.

NICKY WAGNER takes charge
Gerry Brownlee’s six-year reign as the Greater Christchurch Regeneration Minister has come to an end following last month’s Cabinet reshuffle and the responsibility of rebuilding the city has been turned over to local MP Nicky Wagner.
C
anterbury Build magazine talks to Minister Wagner about how far we’ve come on the road to recovery and where to now.
Q. How far has Christchurch come postquake? A. The last six years have been incredibly difficult — we’ve lost loved ones, friends, homes, livelihoods and communities. The recovery and rebuild have also been challenging and it’s fair to say we’ve all been stretched, sometimes almost to breaking point. But we’ve supported one another and now we’re squarely in the regeneration phase, with lots of interesting
and exciting projects on the go. I describe Christchurch as The City of Opportunity because I firmly believe we need to embrace every opportunity to create the most liveable, people-friendly and dynamic city possible. Q. How on track is the city’s rebuild? A. It’s easy to look at what’s not done or the inconvenience caused by work still underway, but we’re getting there. For example, the $2.7 billion programme to repair Christchurch’s underground pipes and roads is almost complete, safeguarding our vital horizontal infrastructure.

Since the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority wound up in April last year, two of the key organisations that took its place have also made exciting progress. Ōtākaro Limited has begun work on the new Convention Centre and the East Frame residential project, and the Innovation Precinct is open for business.

Regenerate Christchurch has started building a 12km long transitional trail along the banks of the Avon River, which will open in stages from spring this year. I know there’s still a lot of work to be done — we need to pick up the pace and stay focussed on moving in the right direction.
Q. What areas will be your key focus under this role? A. My key focus is ensuring we get the best results for the people of Christchurch and greater Canterbury. I think we all want the same thing — a vibrant city where our families can thrive. We want a great education for our kids, we want training and higher learner opportunities, we want jobs we like, we want support services, solid infrastructure and a safe place to relax and enjoy ourselves. I’m working hard alongside Mayor Lianne Dalziel, the Council, Regenerate Christchurch, Ōtākaro, other agencies and community groups so we see results sooner rather than later.
Q. What are your favourite things about Christchurch? A. I was born and raised in Christchurch. This city is my home and the reason I got into politics. I love the opportunities our new city offers every generation — children, young people, families and older people. In terms of the rebuild and regeneration, my favourite development is the Avon River precinct, which provides a green, people-friendly public space winding through the city. The precinct includes the Earthquake Memorial — an important place for reflection — and the Margaret Mahy Family Playground, which brings children and families into the city centre to enjoy everything it has to offer.

Christchurch is bursting from its commercial seams, as a striking new streetscape emerges in our central core. But alongside the contemporary building facades with their eye-catching angles, colours and materials sit the deteriorating remains of partlydemolished and damaged buildings, eye-catching not for their angles and colour selection, but for the graffiti, squatters, damage and safety cordons which, six years post-quake, continue to encroach on public space.

ollowing a recommendation last year from the Christchurch City Development Forum to start forcing property owners’ hands over derelict buildings, the Christchurch City Council has released a ‘living’ list of about 30 buildings and sites considered a “barrier to the regeneration of Christchurch’s city centre”. The list forms part of a council report which outlines a threestep approach for dealing with property owners. Firstly, council will engage with owners, offering advice on development options. Secondly, it will apply pressure by charging fees for the use of public land and, as a last resort, joint action will be taken by agencies with enforcement and land acquisition powers. Initial contact has already been made with the owners. “We will be working with the owners on a case-by-basis and we remain very supportive of owners and developers who are working to repair their buildings,” says Council Strategy and Transformation General Manager Brendan Anstiss. “We also understand that some building owners are still in dispute with insurers or face other complicated issues that are delaying progress. Council will be working and assisting these owners where we can.’’

POST-QUAKE PICTURE
Change has the most pervasive influence over life itself; its presence, one of life’s few inevitabilities. In Christchurch, we know this perhaps better than most.
O
ne of the strongest indicators of how the city is adapting to change post-quake, is the Canterbury Wellbeing Survey, which has been assessing quality of life in the region since 2012. The latest Canterbury Wellbeing Survey shows the wellbeing of greater Christchurch residents continues to improve. According to Psychosocial Governance Group Chair Evon Currie, quality of life indicators have been on an upward trend since the first survey in September 2012, with 82 per cent of respondents rating their quality of life as good or extremely good. “The results indicate that life is getting much better for the majority of people in greater Christchurch – it’s clear that time is a great healer,” Evon says. While many are doing better, things are still “not so rosy” for a significant section of the population, with the survey highlighting concerns over the quality of earthquake repairs. Nearly half of Canterbury homeowners who had the Earthquake

Of the 474 who answered the question, 51 per cent were happy with their repair, while 45 per cent were concerned about the quality of repairs or believed re-repairs were required. Of those who were concerned, more than half took no action. Others were waiting for a re-repair, had a re-repair, or selffunded a re-repair. “It is clear that the recovery is far from over for some in our community,” Evon says. “The wealth of information provided by the Survey will help ensure recovery policies and programmes reflect the real needs of our community.”

BRIGHT FUTURE CENTRAL CITY COMING TO LIFE
Charles Darwin once theorised that rather than the most physically or mentally able, it was those who were responsive to change who were deemed most likely to survive.
I
t’s a notion which lends itself well to the local narrative because, although greater Christchurch may forever be associated with the impact of the earthquakes in the hearts and minds of our nation, it’s the spirit of recovery that defines our region. This spirit of recovery is perhaps best encapsulated by our central core. An evolutionary gridiron for the better part of the last six years, our central city has been changing at a rapid pace in recent months. A veritable oasis of the retail kind, life is bursting from the central city seams, as the local population finds its way back, injecting life and vibrancy back into the central reaches. The central city’s returned office-worker population has been estimated at 11,000 now and expected to reach 14,000 by next year. In January, 500 public servants from several government departments moved into the new
$85m Grand Central building just east of the ANZ Centre. In March hundreds of workers shifted into the second stage of Nick Hunt’s $140m BNZ Centre, with staff from law firm Cavell Leitch and ACC joining BNZ staff and government tenants in the two-building complex. And, in April 500 office staff from ANZ bank and Beca shifted into the $80 million ANZ Centre on Cashel Street. Together the ANZ Centre and the BNZ Centre offer a mix of office space and high-end retail, with the former proving a popular fashion hub. Yet there’s still more to come, with the Crossing development to open in the CBD this year to further enhance the retail arena. “The central city rebuild has reached a point now where you can really get a feel for what it is going to be like when all the construction work is finally finished,” says Central Ward Councillor Deon Swiggs.

“There are new buildings, new shops, new cafés, new laneways, new courtyards – and a new vibe. The rebuild has created some fantastic people places which are adding a real sense of excitement and vibrancy to the city centre.” Limited parking options which once discouraged a central city sojourn are no longer an issue, with more than 3500 parking spaces now available in the central city – about 2120 off-street parking spaces and 1700 on-street metered parking spaces. When the Lichfield Street parking building opens later this year, another 805 parking spaces will be added to central city capacity. “There is a perception that finding a park in the central city is difficult says Christchurch City Council Transport Operations Manager Aaron Haymes. “But with the Innovation parking building and the recent opening of the West End carpark, the Hereford Street carpark and The Crossing carpark, the retail area of the city centre is actually very well served by parking buildings. “So, there’s plenty of options for people if they are coming into the city by car.”

ARCHITECTURAL AWARDS
EMBODY EXCELLENCE I t was an honour to convene this year’s award’s jury and a pleasure to be joined by fellow Christchurch architect Bernadette Muir, graduate Prue Johnstone, lay juror Johnny Moore and Dunedin-based Architect Andrea Bell. The overall quality was impressive and we took great delight in discovering the joys and idiosyncrasies inherent in each. It became evident that successful architecture is more than the finished product; it is about the process, communication between architect and client, and relationships with consultants and contractors. The success of these relationships is manifested in the outcome, which highlights another important role of these awards – to celebrate the architect and wider project teams. Some of the highlights were Sculptor’s House in Banks Peninsula, the triple gabled Fendalton Road House by Patterson Associates, the little gem at 18 Butler Street by Maurice Mahoney, the creative design on a small footprint h01 House, and the joyful C Nott Architects designs on Montreal and Kotare Streets. Although I risk echoing convenors from preceding years, it is worth reiterating that quality architecture begins with strong ideas; it is about creating exceptional environments.
It’s no surprise that most projects in the Canterbury Architecture Awards this year are either directly or indirectly related to the earthquakes. Our city is changing at an unprecedented pace and the importance of architecture is unquestionable.
Not all smoke and mirrors, this Butler Street home by Maurice Mahoney earned an Enduring Architecture award. Photographer: Dennis Radermacher .
Quality architecture is also about joy – that sense of wonderment you find when you encounter an uplifting space or an unexpected detail. As a profession, we should ensure that while we continue to strive for excellence, we also remember the power of architecture to inspire, intrigue and give meaning. Mike Callaghan is an Associate | Architect at Athfield Architects and was the Convenor of this year’s NZIA Canterbury Architecture Awards.

NOISE REDUCTION
AN INTEGRAL FEATURE OF ARCHITECTURAL PLANS A few decades ago, noise reduction by technology and design was not overly considered. Today it plays a key role in all architectural plans.
P
yrotek WavebarÂŽ is an industry leader in controlling noise. Australian made and tested by Canterbury University, it is a
high-performance, flexible, mass-loaded, vinyl noise barrier that offers superior acoustic transmission loss in indoor or outdoor settings. It has been designed to meet global market requirements in reducing building, commercial, industrial, transport, marine and oil and gas noise. The dense core reflects and absorbs the transmission
of sound, reducing frequencies generated from mechanical equipment, engine noise and audio electronic devices.
Wavebar reduces noise transfer in walls and ceilings, and addresses inter-office noise transmission, providing comfort, privacy and confidentiality. It can also control d

the level of crosstalk between acoustically sensitive rooms, as well as control external noise interference from aircraft, traffic or rain.
Obstructions inside a building such as pipes, ducting, light fittings and power points make it difficult to create a noise-tight seal, but Wavebar is simple to cut and install, providing flexibility when installing in challenging places. It can also be retrofitted over existing walls to increase performance.
From an environmental perspective, Wavebar meets the highest standards, containing no ozone depleting substances, in full compliance with European and Australian standards for Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions. It is free from lead and odour-producing oils and bitumen, as well as being resistant to most chemicals, solvents, petrol, weather and UV light. Visit www.pyroteknc.com.

THE BEAUTY OF BRICKS By Allison O’Neill
The ‘Euro Range’ from Brick and Stone defies old fashioned perceptions of brick as a cladding option. “Red bricks have pigeon holed this cladding option for years as “the look” attainable with bricks but this is a view from the dark ages. New modern bricks have changed the perception of what can be created with this medium,” says Shane Blackburn, from Sales and Operations at Brick and Stone.
A
New Zealand family owned and operated business, Brick and Stone has one of the country’s most extensive ranges of brick and stone, as well as schist, roof tiles and tile flooring. “Our Euro range has five new colours: the clean lines of a crisp white, an understated warm cream, an elegant light grey, a striking dark grey and the undeniable style statement of the rich black,” Blackburn explains. The Euro Range is designed in New Zealand and made in Europe. It provides sharp, modern architectural lines. Mixing up different sizes and colours, or choosing to match or contrast the grout colour allows you to make your home truly unique with limitless design choices. The new smart colours bring elegance and style, offering new options with all the benefits building with brick offers: low maintenance, cost effective, strong, weather tight and safe for a lifetime – and no painting required. The Brick and Stone showroom is at 35 Edmonton Road, Hornby, Christchurch.
NEW MODERN BRICKS HAVE CHANGED THE PERCEPTION OF WHAT CAN BE CREATED WITH THIS MEDIUM.”

ow located in Wigram, the business was established seven years ago by Joshua Wong. After working in the engineering field since 2001, he launched Cephas Rock just before the Canterbury earthquakes. As a result, the company grew dramatically in a short amount of time. “I now have 11 staff and our ultimate goal is to continue this success and growth, to become multidisciplinary and multinational. Now that we have more space and facilities for our team, it’s the perfect opportunity to do so.” Cephas is the Aramaic word for ‘rock’, so the company’s philosophy is as solid as every project it undertakes. The business ensures structures are up to the building code, through Detailed Seismic Assessment (DSA) for commercial building owners, and structural assessments for homeowners. “We carry out seismic strengthening to increase the bracing capacity of the building, to make sure it’s safe and stable, whether it’s an earthquake or a storm. Our services also include Geotech engineering; we can now do full Geotech reports for TC3 properties.” Wong says his wide range of clientele appreciate not only the top-notch professionalism and workmanship, but also the efficient turnaround time. “Many people turn to us when they are tired of waiting and we also have the capability to cater a wide range of jobs, from small to big.” For more information visit www.cephasrock. co.nz or phone 03 3385387.

Rigid Air Barrier (RAB) is an engineered panel made from reconstituted timber that can be used as an interior lining to replace builders’ wrap.
S
trand-RAB is a tri-board with a core of wood flakes pressed between two outer layers of MDF. A new concept for New Zealand builds, it has been developed to reduce the build time on new homes. Engineered timber specialist Juken New Zealand (JNL) is in the final stages of completing a CodeMark certification. “Strand-RAB provides bracing elements and repels moisture during the construction phase. By using an approved waterproof tape on the sheet joins, you can effectively close the house in providing a brace element that builders’ wrap doesn’t and it’s easier to install than plastic wrap,” Juken’s Gordon Wilmshurst says.
By adding waterproof tape to the Strand-RAB joins, you can close a house up quicker than using other methods and therefore start work on the interior faster. Strand-RAB is waterproof for limited periods, making the house weatherresistant once the waterproof tape is applied and the exterior cladding can be finished when appropriate.
A NEW CONCEPT FOR NEW ZEALAND, STRAND-RAB IS DESIGNED TO REDUCE NEW HOME BUILD TIMES. Once Strand-RAB is CodeMark certified, it can be used as an approved system throughout New Zealand. For more information about Strand-RAB, phone 09 373 3933 or email info@jnl.co.nz.

ROCKING THE
STONE LOOK
A STYLISH ARCHITECTURAL FEATURE, INSIDE OR OUT We have all seen rock cladding at golf courses, hotels, wineries, retail buildings and in the entrance pillars and fireplaces of residential properties. It is gorgeous, natural and a stunning texture to add as an architectural feature. That said, it is likely only interior designers and architects that truly appreciate the range of looks which can be created from the portfolio of styles, colours and grouts available.
I
t is not until you peruse the colour, texture and shape options available that you see how many options there are and how different each style is from the other. The texture differences, sizes and shades of colour in the rocks make the choices seemingly endless. However, real stone cladding is expensive, while cheap ‘rock-look’ panel systems can show imperfections. Interior rock-look wallpapers can be cartoonish

and lack texture. A product that looks and feels like real stone without the weight and cost associated with the real thing is Eldorado Stone; the world’s biggest selling stone veneer. Used throughout the world since 1969, it has been earthquake tested, is half the price and installation time is three times faster than real stone. ‘Hard as Rocks’ is New Zealand’s exclusive supplier and offers a nationwide supply and installation service for this
manmade stone veneer. The company’s licensed applicators are trained not only in waterproofing and stone application, but also in detailing, to guarantee a flawless, professional finish. The cladding can be applied over timber framing and most retrofit work does not require building consent. The stone is only 50mm thick and can be applied to new builds and existing buildings, interior or exterior, with the lightweight characteristic allowing Eldorado Stone to be laid without footings or expensive steel lintels. Whatever the budget, clever design changes can completely overhaul the appearance of a home, office, business or a space there within. All Hard as Rocks stone varieties are priced the same, so once quoted you can change stone choices without having to re-price your new build,

renovation or landscaping project. Beautiful schist fireplaces or walls can be given a distinctive edge with the use of white grout. Alternatively, a riverstone fireplace, wall or letterbox is stunningly smooth on eyes used to seeing the popular flat, rectangle style rocks. Rounded river stones are the sleek and chic, picture-perfect yet varied choice which is increasingly popular. There are classic rock choices in the Hard as Rocks range like ‘Country Rubble’ or ‘Shadow Rock’ which give that rustic country appearance. Different again are ‘Pacific Lava’ rocks which have a close to nature texture many love. A schist letterbox may not be unusual, but when someone super-stylish chooses the smaller white ‘Stacked Stone Old English’ variety, then you have a letterbox made from the same medium with a completely different look. This same rock variety used at the end of a hallway looks elegant and creates ambiance that does not break your build budget. Whether you apply this cladding option inside or out, in a grand way or subtle, the different colours, sizes and textures enable endless looks from contemporary to rustic country. There are no rules; mix the stones for a varied, individual look or create a unique look using different grout colours. Hundreds of Canterbury homes are dressed in ‘Hard As Rocks’ as well as many commercial buildings – Raeward Fresh, Alpine View Lifestyle Village, Cashmere Hospital and Silverstream at Kaiapoi. Whether on its own or combined with a weatherboard, plaster or panel style house there will always be a place for rock cladding. SHEPPARD AND ROUT - MEDBURY SCHOOL
SCHOOL’S AWARD-WINNING ‘ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE’ By Allison O’Neill
Recognised with a win at the NZIA Architecture Awards, the two-storey, four classroom block at Medbury School was the first stage of a wider, regenerative master plan for the private Fendalton boys’ school. Photographer: Jason Mann
T
he school’s existing buildings were greatly varied, so Sheppard and Rout Architects put strong emphasis on creating a new architectural language to set a precedent for future projects. The scale of the new building – built by HRS Construction – was conceived to complement the existing 1980’s-style classroom it adjoins, through its proportions and verticality. Reflecting the significant shift in teaching environments, the brief was to create a contemporary, adaptable space for modern learning techniques, with natural ventilation and light, while being well-screened from direct sun. Vertical fins on the east and west-facing facades provide solar shading and reflect the verticality of the surrounding mature trees. A north-facing green wall brings the greenery of the surrounding grounds into the heart of the school, creating a distinct elevation in the central play area. Large sliding doors open to a west courtyard created as

The white brickwork exterior looks crisp paired with the champagne aluminum façade, while bright Medbury red greets at the entrance. Acoustic pinboards in shades of Medbury blue and grey are a vibrant interior highlight. “Designing with the school was a colourful, enjoyable experience. Significant collaboration ensured layout was faultless and the spaces the right size and shape. The structural solution pays clear attention to seismic strength and allows maximum flexibility with partitioning to adapt to the future needs of the school,” Sheppard and Rout Associate Jonathan Kennedy explains.

SHEPPARD AND ROUT - FENDALTON HOUSE
URBAN OASIS
Architects Sheppard and Rout were approached to design a new home on a generous north-facing site bordering the Wairarapa Stream in Fendalton. The clients’ brief for the Fendalton Road House was fairly minimal. They wanted a three-bedroom singlelevel home with design used skilfully to maintain privacy from across the stream and neighbouring properties. Located on a rear section, the site provided an opportunity to create a private retreat away from the busy street environment. The site is bordered by the stream to the north, with other properties to the south, east and west

his expansive single-level design, built by Mark Prosser Builders, is split into three separate building wings. The substantial attached garage maximises site constraints whilst complying with planning restrictions. Full-height glazing throughout bathes internal spaces in natural light, while the deep overhanging roof on the north windows incorporate shading to reduce solar gain. The protruding eastern wing forms a sun-drenched central courtyard which is fully protected from the prevailing easterly winds. The ceiling feature is striking: exposed Tonka timber rafters, set on exposed steel frames. While the external Meranti plywood soffits flow all the way through to the interior, bringing warmth to the formal living and dining areas. These timber rafters and soffit also feature in the generous light-filled gallery space which greets guests upon entry. The long building forms as seen from the outside are successfully broken up with floor to ceiling windows that are recessed. The large exterior cedar clad sliding shutters beside them add visual depth whilst providing additional privacy on demand. Sharp angular elements clad in dark vertical natural zinc at the end of each wing cleverly enable hidden light shafts for additional privacy and also provide purposeful framed views.

It is a credit to the team of Patterson Associates, an award-winner in the housing category at the 2017 Canterbury Architecture Awards, for their design that reflects both the client’s history living on the site, as well as being graciously minimalistic and future-proofed. “For the owner, the home looks to cross the divide from historic (memory) to imminent (future),” says Director Andrew Mitchell. “Its footprint was to remain the same and its formal gardens untouched.” The kitchen, living, entry, sitting and dining area were repositioned to connect to the garden, uniting as the perfect all-white interior gallery for the owner’s art

The ground floor spaces are connected with an open circulation space but transform into smaller spaces, reminiscent of its former days, just by closing large pocket sliding doors, or curtaining off areas. The widened double-height entry hall is the heart – light-filled from a central skylight, creating a fantastic space for large dinner parties. Solid Oak flooring and a gas fire with a marble hearth adds warmth. A dramatic central steel spiral stair case with contrasting oak timber tread creates an opulent climb up to the second level’s four bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a central lift as a practical alternative. Sam Manson, Director of local firm SMBC Limited which undertook the challenge of constructing the build, says it was a pleasure to work on. “As a one-off bespoke house, it needed a high level of craftsmanship and a strong relationship with our sub-trades,” he says. “Our team worked consistently throughout the project ensuring quality and efficiency, given the 15-month timeframe. A build of this nature required a collaborative relationship between the architects, construction team, the clients and our sub-trades, a key objective in all of our construction projects.” Structurally, the build consisted of three sculptured gables. olin says the relationship between the building and Hagley Park directly opposite was a key design consideration. “The design narrative was to create a sophisticated ‘tree house’ that makes the most of its proximity to the park.” The design story is further articulated by expression of the innovative viscous damper structure as the limbs of the building. Dark coloured materials reflect the views of the avenue and reinforce the crisp architecture, to provide a counter to the organic forms from the park opposite. The form of the building is two floating boxes suspended above the ground plane with fully glazed “open ends” providing stunning views of Hagley Park and the Port Hills. A lattice of alternating solid wall and glazed elements create a dappled contrast on the east and west faces, and combine with the deeply recessed end facades to reinforce the concept. High quality interior space and occupant amenity have been created, and all commercial and performance requirements briefed have been met or exceeded. A carefully considered and limited material selection, combined with simple forms and clear architectural intent, have delivered a quality commercial building within a very challenging budget.

Nott Architects achieved two awards for two very distinctive residential homes in the Housing category of the NZIA Canterbury Architecture Awards last month.
T
he Christchurch residences were designed to blend together both the clients’ unique functional requirements and their architectural dreams. Fendalton’s Kotare Street, built by awardwinning Clive Barrington Construction, is clad in aluminium-sheet and Hinuera Stone. The brief for the home, was for a synergy of gabled pavilions set around the garden. Formed by creative landscape architect Dan Rutherford, it reflects the clients’ stage of life and love of gardening. The modern-day ‘potting shed’ and greenhouse, is a centrepiece of glass-walled, useable space, enhancing the outdoor ambiance. The use of open-gabled ceilings, light-filled windows and pergolas brings picturesque tree-top, garden and riverside views from the fluid spaces into the truly peaceful and
comfortable abode. In contrast to this private paradise is another Nott Architects winning masterpiece. Showcased on bustling Montreal Street, it blends harmoniously amongst the established historic cottages, offering a fresh, unpredictable twist on pitch-roofed weatherboard tradition, painted in historic barn red with a striking contemporary dormer-window rendition. Built as two adjoining buildings, a middle pavilion makes an equally bold statement – but in a bolt of blue. Cleverly surprising throughout, the jury reportedly left “with smiles on their faces”. This is a personality-filled home built for three generations to reside together, enjoying inner-city living. Visit www.clivebarrington.com and www.nott.co.nz

even than that in Christchurch. In conjunction with the engineer, Pearson ensured seismic technology was incorporated into the design. Well played, because instead of opening as the new museum space as planned on 19 November 2016, the building instead functioned as the Civil Defence Headquarters after 14 November when the earthquake hit. Open now, Pearson says the museum is so comprehensive that a visitor could spend a day there. Its predominant role is to inform and entertain the international visitor and, with an entry fee, the museum needs to provide a highquality experience. Pearson has achieved this by blending the charm of the old museum collection, which contained such curios as mannequins of seafarers’ past, with the smartest that modern museum curation and display can offer. The exhibition is circular. The centre is a mirrored box showing mature plankton life. The next concentric ring covers natural history, followed by human history and, finally, the twin highways of sea and road, so integral to Kaikoura’s history. The Turangawaewae of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu in Kaikoura is woven throughout.
The Kaikoura Canyon lies u-shaped just off the coast and is a biodiversity hotspot, contributing to the name Kaikoura. Pearson captured its importance by designing it into the carpet beneath visitors’ feet. Pearson is passionate about museological aspect of designing for museums, in that they not only display, but collect. He breaks the “fourth wall” concept in museums by including displayed items in glass cases on one side of a unit, while on the other side is shelving, open to not just store but show the collection that is not part of the “current exhibition”. The old Kaiww at the Air Force Museum, meaning that Pearson could not view the collection while designing its new home. This museum is free and aimed at locals and the feel is modern and eclectic with boxes stacked on one another. Pearson needed to appeal to younger people both as new volunteer staff, and as visitors and he has achieved this. The museum is now full of children learning about the town, and of babies, absorbing their local history as if by osmosis!

NZIA CYMON ALLFREY CAMBRIDGE TERRACE PROJECT
ROMANTIC
RIVERSIDE RETREAT By Tracey Edwardes
FUTURE CITY ICON AN ARCHITECTURE AWARDS WINNER A central Cambridge Terrace site now stages a future city icon – an award-winner in the housing category of this year’s Canterbury Architecture Awards.
W
e had an opportunity to create a generous home, with a degree of importance,” says architect Cymon Allfrey. “The cedar and concrete home is unashamedly modernist.” Allfrey has always had a penchant for this era and serendipitously used to admire the client’s pre-quake River Road home of David Brocherie design – a staunch statement amongst romantic riverside villas. The new home also has a dynamic river-side vista, but inherently needed to be a private retirement retreat. This was assisted by the use of architectural spandrels, smaller interior spaces, purposeful angles and a welldesigned courtyard. He commends the skills of John Veitch and team from IBL Builders who were enthusiastically on board, understanding the importance of executing details correctly. The exposed steel components remained ununiformed – resisting perfection. “We set a rule, if a part wasn’t exactly as we envisaged, we’d paint it black. We didn’t want anything to look like it came from a mould. Wood is wood, concrete is concrete – we let each element be itself.” The central lift didn’t escape modesty either; its glass screen became a Christchurch-inspired montage, where the clients also contributed their memories. Cymon Allfrey Architects chose not to stick to a particular language or style, but rather to take an individualised approach to the brief, the site, the materials and the form. “A unique fit to our clients’ lifestyle; that’s how we work.” Visit www.caarc.co.nz.

ADVENTURE Photographer: Lisa Gane
COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURE AWARD FOR ADVENTURE PARK When leisure developers Select Contracts chose the Port Hills forest as the location for the Christchurch Adventure Park, a 900-acre mountain biking Mecca, it was an opportunity for architect Andrew Watson to be part of something special.
T
he valley, only ten minutes from the city, has a “unique feel,” he says. He teamed up with builders Concision and Amalgamated Builders Ltd and bid, successfully, to design the village that serves the adventure park. “It’s a pretty special spot, and the buildings responded really well to that environment.” Andrew established AW Architects in Christchurch after studying in Auckland and travelling abroad. He was a cycle courier in London, made models for the film industry in Canada, and did a lot of snowboarding. But being an architect was always his goal. Since then his firm has continued to grow. “We’re focussing on high end residential and commercial,” he says, with some great ideas for the future of Christchurch. “In our small way, we just want to add as much design quality to what’s happening.” With at least two mixed-use projects underway in the central city, Andrew is putting his stamp on the retail precinct. He is also working on the New Brighton Hot Pools project. For its work on the Christchurch Adventure Park, AW Architects was the winner of the 2017 Canterbury Architects Award for Commercial Architecture. Andrew’s philosophy of design brings together environmental factors – wind, rain, sun, topography. “We distil those aspects and wrap a design around them. There’s a commonality in all the work we do, but we think ultimately every project has to stand in its own environment and react to it.”

THOM CRAIG - SCULPTOR’S HOUSE
AN AWARDWINNING
SEASIDE SANCTUARY By Tracey Edwardes With long-term admiration for each other’s craft, an architect and sculptor’s opportunity to work together culminated in a grand finale – a befitting award in the Housing category of the 2017 Canterbury NZIA Architecture Awards.
B
oth acknowledged the historical and environmental references of the home’s private rural site overlooking Banks Peninsula’s Tikao Bay. When he moved to New Zealand 30 years ago, architect Thom Craig became an admirer of Vernon Brown and his iconic black baches with white-framed windows, which informed the winning home’s aesthetic of steel-framed black cedar cladding and metal roofing. It also references the linear historic ‘war-time’ shed in the bay below. “The home’s two separate forms echo the break in the distant heads and connection to the open water,” Thom says. On one side are the living spaces and the other the studio and garage – the driveway a connecting jetty.

The light minimalist interior, recycled native-timber flooring, and widened corridor befit a gallery for the sculptor’s works. “The large picture windows, as opposed to full-height glass, frame the views – like a painting – ensuring the house remains ‘connected’ to the surrounding typography.” He says the house, beautifully built by Brian Honeybone, sits into the crest of the hill without breaking the visual lines of the surrounding landscape. “Sitting on columns, it touches the ground lightly evoking its nautical environment.” Suspended decks at each end anchors the home’s linear ‘floating’ accommodation, while a central vertical stair connects one to the ground and secluded terrace below the ‘red dazzle underbelly’ of the home. OCEAN-THEMED EATERY
makes architectural waves By Tracey Edwardes Have you been to Fush yet? It will be a question asked of Christchurch folk for a while, as the eatery’s architectural imagination excites the senses as much as the food does.
N
ott Architects provided the only entry that achieved an award in the Hospitality and Retail category of the NZIA 2017 Canterbury Architecture Awards – a knockout in a wave of deep-sea brilliant blue, which soaks its ceiling, flooring and walls. The Kiwi-style fish and chip restaurant in Wigram has taken things up a few notches, and simultaneously back a few decades, creating what the jury described as “an expert operator working with a clever architect”.
NZIA C NOTT ARCHITECTS - FUSH THE RESTAURANT IS A KNOCKOUT IN A WAVE OF DEEP-SEA BRILLIANT BLUE, WHICH SOAKS THE CEILING, FLOORING AND WALLS.
Built upon the theme of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues under the sea, the wall to ceiling mural backdrop takes the customers underwater, and caravan-style table tops takes them back in time. Its submarine meets bygone Kiwi nostalgia. Gas Projects supported the design with its themed branding. This quirky eye-catcher is embellished with must-see themed metal and art work. Combined with exposed ceilings with ducting and stencilled steel, an open-plan kitchen with curved-steel servery and bar, white tiling contrasting with the bottles of Kiwi tomato sauce and the authentic, impressive industrial down-lights hailing from Scottish and Japanese ships, it creates a stand-out recipe seasoned with plenty of humour. Built to perfection by Chris Beer Architectural Builders, Nott Architects describes it as a collaboration of client, builder and designer – an exemplarily statement of good people working together to create a successful project.

T
he winner amongst the entries was the Small Project category’s Urban Cottage, built by Jason Norris and described by the judges as an “Exemplar of succinct inner-city living”. For four years, Tobin designed plans for an inner-city cottage for his family, ultimately resulting in a sympathetically recreated traditional cottage floor-print in two gable sections, to fit onto a chosen tiny linear back section. A work of symmetry, its central entrance hall retains the vaultedceilinged living area’s privacy, with kitchen walls disguising an opening to reveal mezzanine storage and laundry. Space-saving in-built shelves are filled with eclectic finds – as a true cottage is never bare. Painted recycled floor boards were purposely laid without modern precision. “We didn’t want people to feel they had to take their shoes off.” Even the carport cleverly emulates a cottage ‘lean-to’ silhouette, the black-cedar exterior and 45deg-pitched gables contrast with the white-painted and light-timber interior which creates a declaration of space – and Tobin says his 80sqm cottage has oodles. The other two entries included a pair of townhouses built by Wheelers – the visual interaction between a black-cedar square statement rising above green hedging, creating a landmark for Edgeware Road. And secondly, built by respected builder Clive Barrington, Winchester Street’s celebration of rich timber – a timeless L-shaped two-level family home with a duel-entrance atrium and grandiose doorway. he name Basecamp was inspired by their new training academy – an exciting pilot program in conjunction with Hagley Adult Literacy Centre, where students will work towards NZQA standards. “It is a warm, safe starting point at the beginning of an ambitious journey,” says CEO Michelle Sharp. “A place where people can prepare and become equipped for the road ahead before they go on to achieve incredible things.” Kilmarnock helps unlock potential in individuals with disabilities by providing employment, training, support and the tools needed to lead fulfilling, independent lives. The plans for the new building were unveiled to the team using a Lego model. Everyone was involved in planning the courtyard and canteen layout, as well as many of the operational aspects. Cheerfulness is abundant at Basecamp. “We are always having each other on,” giggles a team member while hard at work. The team do regular health and wellness challenges, as well as fitness classes like boxing and Zumba in their new dance studio. Kilmarnock balances social objectives with commercial excellence in the highly competitive open market. They take great satisfaction in contracts won on the merit of the quality of work they produce. With clients like the Gough Group, Murdoch’s Manufacturing, Fonterra and Air New Zealand, Kilmarnock holds its own in the

commercial world. “We have new prospective customers presenting themselves to us regularly. Existing customers wanting more from us, high schools keen to engage with us and parents looking for a pathway for their children as school life comes to an end. I feel we are well positioned for the opportunities we see within reach after our move to Basecamp: even stronger business footing, the launch of the training academy and our positioning within the new and evolving Social Enterprise world,” Sharp says. When Christabel Robinson founded Kilmarnock Enterprises in 1958, she wanted to use education to empower people who had been marginalised by society. For adults with intellectual disabilities, there were few options for training and employment beyond high school. “We offer a work experience programme to suit school leavers and young adults,” says Islay Rackham, Group Marketing Manager at Kilmarnock. “We provide hands-on, practical training that teaches adults with a range of abilities, the skills needed to transition into further employment opportunities. Our workplace is similar to many commercial workplaces, only considerably more diverse. Trainees have the opportunity to gain experience in a large variety of industries including food processing, e-waste recycling, packing, and office services.” Today the team are confident, skilled employees who take on new challenges with ease and pride.

RAPAKI PROPERTY GROUP - BELFAST BUSINESS PARK
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Belfast Business Park’s industrial land is proving very popular, selling at a rate several years ahead of predictions. Felicity Clark of Rapaki Property Group believes the location is key to its success, with Stages 1 and 2A already 70 per cent sold and the next stage already under construction to meet demand.
S
trategically located in the northern corridor, the park is close to the airport, CBD and State Highway 1, with the new Northern Arterial Motorway Extension set to increase accessibility further. One of the savvy business owners who jumped at the opportunity, Esther Hyde from Men at Work says the company wanted to stay north of the city, as half their 50 employees travel from north of the Waimakariri River every day. The park offered a variety of section sizes and Rapaki’s Felicity Clark and Brendon Stewart assisted with designs throughout the build process. For landscaping firm MacDonald Gray, the location was ideal. “The land was price-competitive and it is so much closer to the city than Rolleston, which is priced similarly,”
says owner Phil Ansley He says the developer made the process easy and the company plans to purchase additional land there. “They have made a really nice job of the business park and we’ve been lucky enough to do a couple of landscape entrance features.” Switched On, Master Builders saw the opportunity to bring their two sites together at Belfast Business Park and has since won a New Zealand Master Builders Bronze Award, Commercial Project, for their new headquarters. Owner Chris Hughes says they didn’t require a central city site and with the company working throughout the city, Belfast is just ten-minutes away. He expects the mixture of like-minded trade-based industries will be a key advantage.

APEX PROJECTS - BELFAST BUSINESS PARK
BUILDERS OF BUSINESS THE NAME BEHIND SOME OF THE LATEST COMMERCIAL BUILDS Having recently celebrated its fifth anniversary and winning a bronze award for their first ever entry in the 2017 New Zealand Master Builder Commercial Project Awards, it’s been a busy and exciting year for Apex Projects Ltd.
A
well-established local construction firm specialising in commercial, industrial and selected residential builds, Apex Projects has completed a number of projects in the new Belfast Business Park. The forward-thinking company has constructed two buildings – and currently completing a third – in the northern Christchurch development. Traffic solution firm Men at Work was looking for a construction company to design and build their new premises. As their first new build, getting the right builder was critical and Apex Projects was recommended, with the company providing a turn-key solution. Apex was also recommended to natural stone supplier SlabCo Ltd and completed this 700m2 facility in just over nine weeks from breaking ground to handing over the keys,
ensuring the client’s operational capacity could meet their demand in the market. Most recently Apex Projects was awarded the opportunity to complete the new Winstone Glass building in Belfast, which is shaping up to be a fantastic facility in a prominent location. “We employ our own skilled carpenters, who specialise in industrial and commercial construction; we have trust in our trade partners and subcontractors who’ve worked with us throughout our first five years,” says Contracts Manager Mike Hyslop. “Our team enforces a positive attitude towards health and safety protocols and the willingness to learn more as the markets changes. We have good relationships with clients and the recommendations we’re getting is showing this.” Visit www.apexprojects.co.nz.

REDESIGN GROUP
TAKING NZ DESIGNS TO

o started the design company 18 years ago, and to say it has grown is an understatement. With a presence in many countries, offices in key locations in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, India and Vietnam, and numerous awards, Redesign Group really is a global phenomenon. “Our competency is hospitality, retail, airports, food and beverage,” Jo says. Her commercial interior design and construction projects can be seen all over the planet. From a candy store in Saudi Arabia, to Burger Kings in Fiji and Guam, to the Flat White Café in the East Midlands International Airport, UK, Redesign’s innovative interiors and branding solutions have been exciting business owners internationally. It is however, significantly rooted in Christchurch, Jo’s home town and where it all began. “We work with quite a few developers in Christchurch. One of our key clients is Robert Harris, whom we’ve worked with for many years.” Robert Harris cafés in the BNZ Building, Hornby Hub, and soon to be in Northlands Mall and The Palms, all bear the stamp of Redesign Group. So too, does the upper level of the Christchurch Airport and the new Hornby Hub food precinct.
OUR COMPETENCY IS HOSPITALITY, RETAIL, AIRPORTS, FOOD AND BEVERAGE.” “We provide a full service ranging from design, branding, construction and project management,” Jo says. She serves on a number of advisory panels and boards, and regularly meets international trade commissioners, attends government lead trade delegations and promotes New Zealand design into many developing countries. From Silver Dollar in Rolleston to Switched On in the Belfast Business Park, and many more Redesign Group projects New Zealand wide, Jo hints at something “very new” coming to the South Island market.
