Generating billions of dollars per annum in New Zealand, fashion is the untameable beast at the heart of consumer culture. WESTERLUND 2 Physics is described as the study of matter, energy and the interaction between them. At its heart, it is about asking fundamental questions and trying to answer them through observation and experimentation.

ertainly, this is the premise for and pursuit of The Physics Room in Christchurch. The contemporary art space was established in Christchurch in 1996 and is dedicated to promoting contemporary art and critical discourse in New Zealand. Until 11 June, its South Gallery is playing host to an immersive installation, dislocating the gallery with four walls lined floor-to-ceiling in velvet nebula. Westerlund 2 is the creation of Lyttelton based, award-wining artist Hannah Beehre, and is a work that occupies a disjunctive space between reality and unreality.

Exploring these two mutually exclusive possibilities, Beehre uses imagery from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space telescope-photographs of the star cluster Westerlund 2, located in the Milky Way. She has blended iconic galactic imagery with an antimonumental focus on familiar detail and scale seen in the use of household axminster carpet. The deliberate use of such recognisable and culturally oversaturated images contributes to the series of counterpoints constructed within the work – kitsch, high art; lotech/high-tech; near/far.

In the heart of Merivale, the privately owned facility promotes a sense of peace and privacy for its guests who occupy 30 spacious and elegantly decorated self-contained units that make the most of the outdoor surroundings. Fitzroy of Merivale’s convenient proximity to health care services, banks, shops, cafes and taxi stands is all part of the Pirie’s commitment to providing considered and compassionate care to its residents. Communal areas offer a comfortable and cosy backdrop for socialising, while a full and diverse schedule of activities fivedays a week provides great entertainment and a fun way to stay active and fit. Enjoyable days lead into charming evenings with every dinner treated as a special occasion including white tablecloths, linen napkins and delicious flavours. “Offering a true home environment and a community spirit is very important to us and we enjoy an excellent relationship with our residents predicated on trust and great communication,” the Pirie’s say. Supported by a loyal staff base with an impressive mix of skills, experience, professionalism and empathy, Fitzroy’s fundamental focus is ensuring its residents receive impeccable care while being able to maintain their independence and quality of life. THE POWER OF

CHITHow would you define PechaKucha? PechaKucha (pronounced pe-cha-ku-cha) means ‘chit-chat’ in Japanese. It is a presentation style where the presenter has 20 images on display for 20 seconds each, advancing automatically, giving a total time limit of 6 minutes 40 seconds to share a project or convey an idea. PechaKucha Nights are informal and fun gatherings where people get together and share in the PechaKucha 20x20 format. Here in Christchurch, we run 4 events each year in various venues around the city. PechaKucha was devised by Klein Dytham Architecture in Tokyo, as a means to share information in a succinct and visually powerful way. For 14 years now, cities all over the world have been holding events that pull together a collection of quick, fun and informative talks, accompanied by thinking and drinking. The beauty of PechaKucha is that anyone can present! You don’t have to be a traditional creative or have an existing portfolio of work you want to share, and you can talk about anything.

PECHAKUCHA HAS IGNITED A POWERFUL, CREATIVE DISCOURSE IN CHRISTCHURCH AND ACROSS THE GLOBE. BORN OUT OF TOKYO, PECHAKUCHA HAS GROWN AND SCATTERED ALL OVER THE GLOBE, SPREADING QUICK, FUN AND INFORMATIVE TALKS ON JUST ABOUT ANYTHING.

What is your role and how did you become involved? PechaKucha Night Christchurch has been running in Christchurch for nine years and I have been co-organising it for two years with my predecessor Netta Egoz. After she was appointed Executive Director at PechaKucha Global HQ, I took over the role as City Organiser of PechaKucha Night Christchurch with support from volunteers.

Metropol talks to PechaKucha Night Christchurch City Organiser Erica Austin about the power of chit-chat and its role in strengthening the social fabric of a changed city.

My background is in architecture and I have always been interested in how creative disciplines, businesses, community organisations and individuals can work collaboratively. I have a passion for making Christchurch awesome and see this city as a place to experiment and grow creatively. I work at Ministry of Awesome as

-CHAT the Experience Awesomist, I’m a wedding and events photographer and am also an organiser for other events such as, FESTA, Startup Weekend and TEDxChristchurch etc. When Netta asked me to join the team in 2015, I had to say yes! This was another great opportunity to contribute to the social rebuild of our city. How and when did PechaKucha find itself in Christchurch? Vanessa Coxhead (ex-curator of The Physics Room, now architectural graduate) brought the first PechaKucha Night event to Christchurch in 2008. PechaKucha is non-profit and run completely by volunteers, myself included. We do this for the love. Other past city-organisers include Jessica Halliday (FESTA director, Architectural Historian), Chloe Geoghegan (Art Gallery Curator) and Netta Egoz (exlawyer, now current Director at PechaKucha Global HQ). What has the response been like to date? Amazing - people love the PechaKucha Night format and we always sell out! The next event is our 31st event in Christchurch and it sold out in just 3 days. The largest event we have hosted was my first as co-organiser and was held at the Isaac Theatre Royal with 600 attendees. This was a collaboration with Heritage New Zealand. Since then, we’ve partnered with numerous organisations such as the WORD Festival, University of Canterbury, Spectrum Street Art Festival, Christchurch Art Gallery, FESTA and more. People always tell us they enjoy being part of this event, as it follows the creative rebuild of our city. How important do you think the concept of PechaKucha is to Christchurch as it works to find and establish a new sense of identity post-quakes? PechaKucha Nights are important to the Christchurch creative community, it’s more than just an event but part of the cultural canvas. We love popping up in new and recently returned buildings all over the city, offering

different experiences to various communities as well as contributing to a range of conversations in Christchurch. It also means we are part of a global community. PechaKucha will soon be active in a stunning 1,000 cities, who have collectively hosted 10,000 PechaKucha nights around the globe, and uploaded 10,000 presentations to PechaKucha.org. What do you consider to be some of the greatest perks of your role? Being the City Organiser gives me the opportunity to meet some of the most interesting and creative people in our city! I am continuously blown away by the stories they have to tell using the 20 x 20 format. Annually, PechaKucha hosts a PowWow event for organisers from around the world in Tokyo to connect, share experiences and learn from each other. I was fortunate enough to attend last year’s gathering. Meeting some of the world’s leading creatives, and the founders, Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein, in person. I’m hoping to attend next year’s PowWow and look forward to bringing back valuable learnings and new ways of thinking. We are part of a global community and with Netta Egoz (one of us) based at PechaKucha Global HQ, we are privileged to work together on a global level. What can we expect from PechaKucha in the coming months? The next event will be held at CoCA Centre of Contemporary Art, on Wednesday 14th of June (sold out) themed Making Space. The notion of making or creating space is extremely broad and we would like to celebrate different perspectives on this theme. This time, the event will be amongst CoCA’s upcoming exhibition with speakers focusing on what making space means to them. Do you have a favourite mantra? Be the change you wish to see in the world.

NATIONAL

FLASH FICTION DAY

By Céline Gibson

Mark Twain once said: “To condense the diffused light of a page of thought into the luminous flash of a single sentence is worthy to rank as a prize composition just by itself.”

O

n the shortest day of the year, 22 June, the “luminous flash” of condensed sentences will be celebrated simultaneously at National Flash Fiction Day (NFFD) events in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and, for the first time, Dunedin. Brindi Joy, Christchurch Chair of NFFD 2017, and Canterbury regional winner of the inaugural NFFD 2012, says this of the genre: “The challenge of writing flash is in the brevity of the piece. There has to be enough for the reader to hold onto, while also allowing the reader to do a little of the work themselves.” Brindi says this year’s event has some exciting new components, such as Matariki - the Maori New Year - being celebrated with flash readings in Te Reo from writers Teoti Jardine and Tania Roxborogh, and the NFFD youth section for 8-18 year olds, judged by Wellington writer, Fleur Beale, and Christchurch writer, Heather McQuillan. Heather reports there have been 125 entries for this. Brindi reflects on what the Christchurch NFFD 2017 event means to her: “It’s not only a celebration of literature in our community; it’s a celebration of Cantabrians and their flair for flash fiction!” She could well be referring to NFFD youth section judge Heather McQuillan, who was not only declared winner of NFFD 2016, but also awarded a Highly Commended, and scooped 1st place in the Micro-flash

competition! In the NFFD 2015 competition, Christchurch poet Frankie McMillan, took out first and third place. Need we say more? It’s timely, then, to get Heather McQuillan’s take on what the inaugural youth section will bring to NFFD. “The NFFD youth section provides a rare opportunity for young writing voices to be heard in a wider setting. There are few anthologies in New Zealand, particularly for teenagers (the Redraft series is a shining example) or online spaces for younger writers. While some competitions provide a prompt, this one didn’t, which has brought a huge variety of entries; we have legends, science fiction, comedy, letters, prose poems, tall tales, adventures, memoir, and monologue. The stories Fleur and I have started reading are full of inventiveness, fun and fear, heart and hope.” And of the genre itself, Heather has this to say: “Writing flash fiction requires full attention to the redrafting process, something that beginning writers are often reluctant to do, thinking they have to get it right first time. Experienced writers know that redrafting is where the true craft of writing comes to the fore.” The NFFD 2017 event will be held at the Space Academy, 22 June, 6-8 pm, and will once again be compered by the incomparable MC Morrin Rout. Unprecedented creativity has found its feet in Christchurch following the earthquakes. The collective imagination of entrepreneurs and innovators has simply refused to remain quiet in the face of significant adversity; instead filling the gaps; challenging the status quo; and bravely introducing the type of eclectic energy that a somewhat conservative Christchurch may have previously shied away from.

A

dynamic new exhibition at Toi Moroki Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA) this June speaks to this very energy. MAKING SPACE (10 June – 20 August 2017) will involve six diverse artist collectives and over thirty individuals practising at the cutting-edge of the Aotearoa New Zealand art community. MAKING SPACE will transform the gallery into a host for thought-provoking discourse with the objective of inviting diverse communities to connect and create art. Works, events and participation from the members of FAFSWAG, FIKA Writers, Fresh and Fruity, Mata Aho Collective, SaVAge K’lub, and The Social are all on the agenda. Notable highlights include Mata Aho Collective, who are also currently exhibiting at Documenta; one of the world’s most highly regarded art exhibitions. Of the opportunity Khye Hitchcock, curator at CoCA says, “MAKING SPACE is a timely celebration of collective practices, which have flourished across Aotearoa over the last few years. Collectives often form around a shared need for space, whether that is conceptual, physical or cultural. “This exhibition looks at what is happening nationally in collective practice by inviting six active groups to participate in a programme that will include both installation and live performances. MAKING SPACE will celebrate their mahi (work) and the important role these collectives play in maintaining their own communities, as well as acknowledging their contribution to contemporary art and culture in Aotearoa.” MAKING SPACE is a free admission exhibition opening on Saturday 10 June and will be supported by a rich programme of public events.

With only six weeks to rehearse, costume and light the 45 minute show, it’s a big ask for a company of mainly volunteer staff. MAKE A SHIFT INTO THE

WORLD OF TECHNOLOGY Looking for a career change, or wanting to return to the workplace?

International Masters Exhibition June 8th - 22nd Joseph Zbukvic, Alvaro Castagnet, Amanda Hyatt, John Lovett

hift offers a well-designed pathway to a tech career. And, with the tech world booming in the South Island, it’s the perfect time to make your move into the sector. Shift is a nine-month programme run by SIGNAL, the ICT Graduate School for the South Island. SIGNAL Director, Stuart Charters, describes Shift as the ideal career transition education, with hands on, real world projects that ensure students get experiences that prepare them for the reality of a career in tech. “Shift is for anyone who has a degree, and that degree can be in any discipline. We take Shift students and we hot-house them for nine months, giving them the tools they need to step strongly into an IT role – anything from a tech-writer to project management.” Shift students learn the fundamentals of the tech industry, including agile and design thinking. But the real world immersion is what really sets the course apart. “Our Shift cohort in Dunedin just completed their first industry-led project. They worked with HATCH, a children’s innovation workshop space, to design a web-based solution for 8–12 year olds within nine days. It was a tough brief, but the team loved it and HATCH was thrilled with the result. “The Shift team is now moving onto their next group project for the Lilliput Libraries. It’s a full on nine months. But you really come out of it ready to roll in a tech job.” Shift’s next cohort starts in Christchurch on July 24th. Visit www.signal.ac.nz/shift or email info@signal.ac.nz.

MONUMENTAL MOMENT By Kate Pierson

A week ago today (1 June), ‘Karen Walker Men’s Eyewear’ escaped the designer’s lips for the first time in her eponymous brand’s history.

W

alker’s first official menswear collection is as unapologetically bold - in looks and theme - as those eyewear collections that came before. Transformers, we’re looking at you when we say this. The aptly title Monumental range is a clever hybrid – on one hand it talks to the fluidity of modern masculinity, while on the other it plays by the rules of classic virility. As always, the cultural references are present and palpable if one is an intellectually curious type. Connections to Hemingway, Pablo and Voltaire echo throughout the collection. The thirties and fifties play an important role in Monumental with an honest, masculine simplicity in materials and colours: black horn and tortoiseshell acetates; silver and gold metal; polarized or classic lens colours of smoke, brown and green. Walker says, “It just felt like the right time to reassess

It just felt like the right time to reassess the concept of modern masculinity.” the concept of modern masculinity. When we talk about what it is to be a man now, it’s such a fluid concept. And yet, there’s also this wonderful permanence. We wanted to capture that. To be subversive and classic at the same time.” The campaign imagery was shot in LA on none other than zeitgeist-defining monumental man Connan Mockasin.

FORGET HAVING TO PLAY IT SAFE WITH LINING JUST THE WATERLINE; A MORE DRAMATIC LOOK AWAITS.

By Kate Pierson

When it comes to pre-prepping skin ahead of creating a desired look, cutting corners is never sensible. Indulging the skin with a delicious facial and then priming your canvas with a subtle illuminator is a strategy that will never lead you astray.

I

n a stroke of irony, however, when it comes to ‘the’ aesthetic for eyes this autumn/ winter, perfect imperfections are all the rage. A direct export from the catwalks of Milan, over lining is the current obsession – specifically smudgy black eyes with a pop of colour. Forget having to play it safe with lining just the waterline; a more dramatic look awaits. The collection of makeup assets we’ve scoured for your viewing and testing pleasure will help you to Get the Look.

NEW AND EXCITING

Anti-ageing treatments

Appearance medicine is a rapidly growing area of medicine with new and improved treatments to reverse the signs of ageing being developed constantly. With so much information out there it’s hard to know which treatments are going to give you the best results for your time and money.

BEFORE

AFTER

r Brigid Lee from the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic in Christchurch has reviewed two of the best for 2017 for Metropol readers. Everyone wants firmer, stronger and glowing skin as it makes you look youthful and healthy. To achieve this, there is the V2 Beauty Booster treatment. The treatment involves injecting a unique hyaluronic acid that hydrates and repairs the dermis into the skin of the entire face with the V2 injection device. The hyaluronic acid includes a patented formula of natural components - amino acids, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins - and it’s this combination that helps to optimise DNA synthesis and stimulate collagen production giving skin a fabulous glow! When clients say, ‘I look older than I really am’ it can be very disconcerting. One of the most common ‘trouble spots’ is the lower face and neck. In fact, a change in the contour of the jawline is one of the first things ageing clients say they notice when they look in the mirror. The formation of jowls, the degeneration of soft tissue cells, and the sinking in of the chin are all connected to collagen deficiencies. Now there is Ultherapy which is the only non-invasive procedure, FDA-cleared, to lift skin on the neck, under the chin and jowls and around the eyes. Ultherapy uses the power of ultrasound to rejuvenate and lift these trouble spots!

W

hile there is a longstanding school of thought that casual and chic are mutually exclusive concepts, we’d beg to differ. Eva Mendes may have once said that she would never be seen in ‘slacks’ in front of her significant other, we’ve discovered some style darlings in this vein that are equal parts cosy and cool. A generous step above athleisure (clothing designed for active lives that still has street cred), this creed of clothing has been affectionately dubbed ‘loungewear’. The urban dictionary tells us that it is ‘comfortable wear that appeals to each individual’s state of mind’. It’s difficult to know when the two worlds (loungewear and daywear) started to collide, but the meteoric rise of the harem pant might be able to take some credit. Likewise, greater experimentation with fit and fabric has helped the style to shrug off its previously negative stigma. One thing’s for sure, we’re living in the Golden Age of casual clothing, and we like it a lot. Brands like Kowtow and Bassike are legends when it comes to loungewear. So if you’re planning a night in or a day out and want to stay a little bit glam, but very warm and comfortable, you’ve found the solution.

THE PATH TO

PERFECTION With the award-winning Petersens Jewellers at Bush Inn Centre, designing engagement rings and diamond jewellery is a personal experience with quite an extraordinary story behind the creations.

anaging Director, Brent Morrison, personally travels to Antwerp in Belgium, the centre of the world’s diamond trade, to carefully inspect and select each individual diamond. Antwerp is home of the HRD (Diamond High Council), the world’s leading diamond certification lab which inspects and controls all diamonds moving in and out of Antwerp. Recently Brent was part of a select group who were able to follow the path of diamonds from the Botswanan Jwaneng Mine to the De Beers sorting facility and then to one of the factories that cut and polish the rough diamonds into sparkling precious gems. “It was simply an amazing journey for all of us. Very few jewellers in the world have had the opportunity to tour the Jwaneng Mine, nor the De Beers diamond sorting facility. When we moved into the area where the largest stones are sorted, we were allowed to hold a huge piece of rough diamond, worth in excess of US$10 million.” Celebrated by clients as a diamond and engagement ring specialist, Petersens is New Zealand’s oldest jewellery retailer, creating stunning jewellery and watches since 1863. “We have been around a long time, so people really trust us. We often work with several generations of the same family.” Open seven days a week in the Bush Inn Centre, phone Petersens Jewellers on 348 8042 or visit www.petersensjewellerschristchurch.co.nz.

We offer a friendly, personal service and can find the perfect colour and style to suit you amongst our huge variety.”

ffering an alternative hairloss solution, award-winning business Georgies Wig Shop has arrived in Christchurch. Owner, Eleanor Burgess, discovered her passion for working with wigs after helping a friend who was going through chemotherapy. The qualified hairdresser founded Georgies Wig Shop in Palmerston North in 1993 after her friend sadly lost her battle with breast cancer, aged just 42. “She really encouraged me and told me to start the business,” says Eleanor, who has now been supplying wigs all over New Zealand for the past 24 years. “I wanted to offer a more personal service, rather than choosing colours and styles from catalogues. It’s important to see it, try it, feel it.” Georgies Wig Shop is also a recognised service provider and stocks a wide selection of high quality products including European-sourced real and synthetic wigs, custom-made clip-in hair extensions, as well as a full range of beautiful Kiwi-made turbans. Eleanor and Charlotte run the shop in St Albans and can also offer private consultations outside of shop hours. “We also have a new range of synthetic wigs and clip-ins which are heat-resistant, so they can be straightened or curled,” says Eleanor, who has assisted people ranging in ages from four to 90 years old. “We offer a friendly, personal service and can find the perfect colour and style to suit you amongst our huge variety.”

NEW, MODERN, ARCHITECTURALLYDESIGNED TOILETS WITH STATE-OFTHE-ART FACILITIES FOR BOTH THE PUBLIC AND CENTRE STAFF.

A ROYAL S FLUSH It’s been a long time coming, but now it’s here” could be the theme song for the new toilet facilities at South City Centre.

o break out the streamers and balloons and celebrate the arrival of these new, modern, architecturallydesigned toilets with state-of-the-art facilities for both the public and centre staff. Regular shoppers as well as the staff and the retailers at South City Centre have been hanging out for new bathrooms to replace the tired-looking 1990s versions. Walk through the bathroom doors now and you’re greeted with chic, contemporary yet classic, grey and white tiled decor, spacious cubicles, plenty of basins with no touch taps and soap dispensers, high speed hand dryers, and walls of mirrors. “We’ve put a great deal of care and thought into making sure the toilet upgrade is absolutely spot-on and right up to spec with what is required of public bathrooms today,” says Steve Hutson, South City’s

Operations Manager. “It may have all taken a little longer than we originally envisaged, but it’s been a major project requiring the old toilets to be completely stripped and gutted. We are simply delighted with the final look and functionality of the new facilities.” As well as new toilets, the facilities upgrade has included a new parents’ room right next to the main bathroom block. It too has specifically-designed features, including a comfortable chair for feeding, a changing table, and its own toilet. The final stage of the complete project is to redevelop the paraplegic unit and that is now in the design stage. South City Centre’s toilet upgrade echoes the exciting re-development of the CBD taking place nearby. Visit the centre to be part of it all and enjoy the services on offer.

WOMEN COME TO OXFORD WOMEN’S HEALTH FROM THROUGHOUT NEW ZEALAND AND OVERSEAS FOR OUR EXPERTISE.”

xford Women’s Health is a Centre of Excellence for women’s health and the only specialist endometriosis and pelvic pain treatment centre of its kind in New Zealand. “Women come to us from throughout New Zealand and overseas for our expertise, particularly in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery,” Director Simon Jones says. Supporting the gynaecological team is a wide range of specialists, who provide wrap around services to look after other aspects of women’s health. Clinical psychology, physiotherapy, nutrition, menopause, and oncoplastic breast and general surgery are among their areas of expertise. “We are a truly multi-disciplinary team backed up by an incredible group of highly-skilled nurses,” Simon says. “Assisting women with fertility issues has also become an important part of what we do, through Genea Oxford Fertility, our joint venture with international fertility experts Genea,” he says. “Whether women want to freeze their eggs to help preserve their future fertility, need assistance to get pregnant, or support before, during and after having a baby, we’re here to help.” Genea Oxford Fertility has achieved success for many couples in helping them to start or grow their family. The clinic’s focus is on making fertility treatment as comfortable, simple and stress-free

as possible. “We want to provide the best care, as well as the best possible outcome,” Simon says. “Sadly we know that women can put up with troublesome health issues, including infertility, for a long time before they talk to their family doctor or seek specialist advice. BLACK BLACK IS THE NEW By Kate Pierson

Peter E. Laws MB ChB FRCSI

WINTER COLOUR SPECIALS

Black is the colour that just keeps on winning. Try as they might, no other hue has come close to knocking it off its sartorial perch. And with good reason.

N

eiman Marcus once said, “Women who wear black lead colourful lives” – oh the irony. But he’s right. Black is unquestionably powerful – commanding, compelling and able to court many other colours thanks to its chameleon

like nature. In the past I’ve often been told ‘you wear far too much black’ – the critics hold black in contempt affiliating repetitive wear with an aggrieved state of mind. I’d argue that it represents the antithesis for me. When wearing black I feel chic, sophisticated, empowered and presentable, even when said black clothing is more informal. Quite frankly, if Coco Chanel, Christian Dior and Karl Lagerfield have all extoled the virtues of black in a woman’s wardrobe, who are we to argue?

A UNIQUE APPROACH TO

WELLBEING

In 2013, Rebecca Harford laid second-hand carpet on the floor of her garage, borrowed a gas heater from an aunt, and welcomed six people to her first adapted yoga and pilates class.

“I

t’s called Adapted Yoga and Pilates because it is adapted to the person. We believe that a simplistic, practical and individualised approach helps our people to achieve their health and wellbeing goals,” says Rebecca. With her classes eventually outgrowing the garage, Rebecca made a move to St Lukes Church, Halswell, where she became a familiar sight walking her baby daughter, dog, yoga mats and gym ball to and from the church every day. Rebecca and fellow teachers – Charmaine, Usha, Helen and Tilak – are now teaching at Te Hāpua, Halswell Centre, seven days a week, and as of June will have expanded into three additional venues at the Fendalton, St Martins and Pegasus Community Centres. “Our teachers don’t just demonstrate from the front of the class; they personalise the classes to each participant, and give individualised, hands-on feedback and support,” says Rebecca. Adapted Yoga and Pilates provides free wellbeing reviews to implement personalised wellbeing plans, personal training, workplace wellbeing programmes and classes, and yoga teaching training, from which they have fulltime teachers working for them today. “Some great friendships have been made here,” says Rebecca. “Our philosophy is based on supporting our people and their needs with a whole lifestyle approach. Anyone can achieve their goals with the right support.” Info: support@adaptedyogaandpilates.com.

or something a little different, whether it’s for a birthday party, a girls’ night out, date night, a team-building or work social event, Paint ‘n’ Sip Studio offers a great way to unleash your inner creativity. Owner Amanda Anthony started the business

almost three years ago as a fun, social activity to enjoy with friends over a wine in a relaxed environment, for all artistic abilities, including those who can’t even draw a straight line. To celebrate the company’s third birthday in August, a special deal will be available all month long – budding artists will need to keep an eye on the website for more details. A Paint ’n’ Sip session is also a great way to spend time during the upcoming July school holidays. The ‘Mini Monet’ sessions are artist-led, for children aged 8-13 years. The 1.5 hour sessions include all materials to complete the painting with step-by-step instructions. Voted one of the ‘Top 25 Most Popular School Holiday Activities’ two years in a row, it’s important to book early so the kids don’t miss out. Family paint sessions will be a new addition to the calendar over the winter months as well. “The main focus is on fun, but at the same time creating something you’re proud of and making lasting memories with friends and family.” Paint ‘n’ Sip Studio is located at 136 Ilam Road. MOËT PARTY DAY By Nicholas Henare

Building on the success of last year’s event, Moët Party Day will be returning to Baretta Bar in Christchurch.

T

his year’s Moët & Chandon Moët Party Day is one to put on the calendar; it’s a chance to introduce a little bit of special sparkle into the weekend. The event last year rolled into the small hours with a load of fun and frivolity had by everyone. Baretta is always a great venue to host such a prestigious event and everyone dresses up for something a little bit special. With Moët Party Day it’s your chance to step out in style and embrace a great beverage with great people. Kicking off at 7pm on 17 June, party goers will get to enjoy an evening of champagne, music and glamour, as well as bespoke

Moët & Chandon cocktails designed especially for the evening. Last year I tried some cocktails that were especially good and for some reason I haven’t been able to recreate what I thought they were. I know this year will bring the same amount of quality to the event. With a number of surprise #moetmoments in store for attendees of the celebrations, that means the odd prize or two, which last year came in golden bubbles. Metropol’s Editor walked away with a great prize in 2016, while I went home with a smile and some really great memories of a great night out. Hopefully you will be able to join us all there.

We are excited to introduce our new Menu Additions featuring innovative and interesting seafood dishes delivered fresh from the market direct to our menu The new dishes are in addition to our existing menu and change daily, depending on the morning’s catch 40 June 08, 2017 Metropol

hat is consistent across all stores is a bright, colourful, spacious environment, packed full with the freshest, most luscious fruits and vegetables their regions have

to offer. There are three stores in Christchurch at Harewood, Tower Junction, and Marshland Road. There are also stores in Nelson and Queenstown. Each Raeward Fresh store is individually owned and operated and, along with their staff, they are passionate people delivering quality “fresh food every day”. Each Raeward store is dedicated to a “paddock to plate” approach. “Our Produce Buyers source products direct from growers as well as the

local markets on a daily basis – we aim to have the best quality produce at the best value,” says Simon, owner of the Tower Junction store. Raeward Fresh has come a long way from its beginnings in the 1980s as a road-side produce stall on Johns Road near the airport. Quality fruit and vegetables are still the hallmark of each store and, combined with a butchery range of 100 percent New Zealand farmed meats prepared by instore butchers, they have got you covered for your cooking needs. “Our main focus is produce and meat,” says Peter, owner of Marshland Road, “but there is also a vast range of products that complement and enhance home cooking. There are cooking oils and vinegars, pasta, sauces, breakfast offers, herbs and spices and specialty cheeses.” Not content to simply supply the best produce and foods available, they want to provide customers an enjoyable journey around the store and a welcoming shopping experience. With reports in the media recently about the sky-rocketing price of vegetables up and down the country, it is reassuring to know that Raeward Fresh stores can not only be competitive, but because of their unique position with local growers, their prices can also often offer better value than other retailers. There are always specials listed, so check them out on their store Facebook pages.

From Lyttelton Harbour a beautiful example that even the most hardened, anti-rose ratbags need to try. The nose shows a delicate fruit sweetness and the palate is long with pristine acidity and flavours of ripe summer berries

This is richly fruited and fragrant on the nose showing yellow stone fruit, mango, mandarin and butterscotch characters. The palate is succulent and beautifully weighted, and offers creamy texture and nutty complexity, leading to a lingering expansive finish.

Deep red in colour. Lots of fruit, displaying dark cherry, plum, vanilla and mixed spice characters. The palate is succulent and rounded, and offers excellent fruit weight and intensity, beautifully framed by polished tannins.

WALNUT & KALE PESTO

SERVES

3/4

BY SAM MURPHY, Beautifully Real Food This pesto is so delicious and nourishing, and it also hides a secret nutrient punch with the addition of kale! Kale is one of the most nutrient-dense plant foods; but eating it on its own is not the most enjoyable experience (it tastes a lot like chewy grass!)

I’ve found myriad ways to incorporate kale into my meals, and one of my favourites is hiding it in pesto. Enjoy this with salads, pasta, sandwiches and crackers or use it as a dip.

INGREDIENTS 2 garlic cloves 1 tablespoon coconut oil 60g (1/2 cup) walnuts 60g (1/2 cup) raw cashews soaked for 3-6 hours 2 large handfuls of kale leaves, roughly chopped 1 bunch of basil leaves 125ml (1/2 cup) olive oil 60ml (1/4 cup) water 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, or to taste 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 2 teaspoons coconut sugar 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast

DIRECTIONS 1.

Fry the garlic cloves in a non-stick frying pan with the coconut oil until they brown and become fragrant.

2.

Blend the garlic cloves and the rest of the ingredients in a high-speed blender or food processor until smooth and creamy.

3.

Store in an airtight container and consume within 5 days.

Been skiing at Mt Hutt? Need a bite to eat or drink on the way back? Why not stop at West Melton and visit Two Fat Possums? Your culinary cravings will be satisfied.

A FUSION OF FLAVOURS Filipino food is set to be one of the biggest trends in Asian cuisine in New Zealand.

E

lizabeth Presquito decided to bring a little of that to Christchurch when she opened Dumpling Master in Barrington Mall in November 2016. “There’s no such thing as an authentic dumpling,” Elizabeth says. The humble dumpling has as many variations as there are countries and regions that cook and consume them. Local ingredients are different, as are preparation methods.” At Dumpling Master there is a fusion of Filipino and New Zealand flavours fried or steamed into its dumplings. ince opening in February, Two Fat Possums has gained a large following with locals. Anyone in West Melton after a quiet drink, a spot to dine, or just soak up the friendly atmosphere, should look no further. Step inside and quality exudes from every room. With the capacity to fit 200 people and friendly staff on hand, the atmosphere is second to none. Tasteful decor includes wooden tables and leather/fabric chairs and a few big screen TV’s to watch the rugby and racing. Menu wise, starters like crispy chicken wings are a treat before progressing up to the delectable mains like the ever popular pork belly or steaks cooked to perfection. Another highlight is the wood fired oven pizzas, with a range of toppings to suit the most discerning pizza connoisseur. There is also a wide range of desserts and drinks and a great variety of on-tap beer, cocktails and wine is also never far away. Plus special deals feature every day and Two Fat Possums also runs a quiz night on Tuesday nights and allows its function room to be used for private dining and fundraising events for your local club or school. coriander, or pork and shrimp. Also, there are cheese dumplings, two cheeses with a pork or beef or chicken filling - all with the option of an additional salad. There are also vegetarian dumplings made with kumara, pumpkin, potato and peas. “As far as I know, nobody does chocolate dumplings,” Elizabeth says. The chocolate and banana dumplings, served with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce, are inspired by a fried banana fritter, very popular in the Philippines. Another favourite is ‘siopao’, a steamed bun filled with pulled pork and a sweet sauce infused with star anise. All meals can be eaten at the food court seating, or packaged to go. Look for the bright yellow kiosk in the food court at Barrington Mall and visit the Dumpling Master Facebook page.

IS BREWING SOMETHING GREAT

By Nicholas Henare

Lately I’ve been asked to try a variety of beers with “additions” to flavour - citrus, honey, the list goes on!

I

UNDERESTIMATE ITS FLAVOUR AND YOU’LL BE THE ONE LEAVING WITH YOUR TAIL BETWEEN YOUR LEGS.”

’m kind of a purist beer lover so when I uncapped the Black Dog Breweries “Brewtus” – a coffee stout, I was very surprised, and pleased. A 500ml bottle and a Havana Coffee Collaboration with 5.9% alcohol, this is a cross-bred brew, courtesy of Black Dog Brewery and Havana Coffee Works. A rich and silky stout, dry-hopped with a hefty bag of crushed coffee beans straight from Bolivia, it has a good dose of Cascade hops to add some extra growl. This stunner is best enjoyed with hearty stew or a slab of chocolate cake. I’ve always loved stout, but to be honest, the coffee really adds deep and meaningful flavour to it. Its stunning depths and multiple layers make it the perfect companion to a hearty meal by a roaring fire. Quite truthfully, when I got to the

end of my 500ml, I actually let out an “Ohhh bugger”. I then tried the Special Agent India Pale Gold Medal BGNZA with 5.6% alcohol. This “dog” is smooth on the surface, but he’s got a hoppy little hit hiding inside. Special Agent is a dualhopped IPA, made with Nelson Sauvin and Taiheke Hops and has a piney, resinous character. The range of IPA in the market is staggering and a real reflection on the variance of individual tastes. You can really pick a style you’re comfortable with and try such a variance of each style. Black Dog Brewerie’s releases are limited, 3 months each, but definitely worth seeking out. Great flavour and real depth. Love their marketing, love their beer more. I’ll leave the tag line to them, “Underestimate its flavour and you’ll be the one leaving with your tail between your legs.”

our years ago, she asked Graham at Everybody’s Butchery for a job, but he said no. Fortuitously, he was selling the business, so Lisa, and her husband Jan, also from Germany but whom she had met in

Everybody’s Butchery provides great, friendly service and, of course, quality meat products, many of which are prepared and presented the old-fashioned way. A lot of the meat at Everybody’s Butchery is completely preservative free. Most is gluten free, and there are no fillers added. “No sugar, and no nasties,” Lisa says. Fresh meats from the cabinet are cut or minced right in front of you. Everybody’s Butchery is registered as a dual operator, providing a full range of services for home-kill and recreational game. Once verified, “We cut it up, or turn it into sausages, or turn it into whatever you want”. As specialists in paleo requirements, all its meats are sourced in Canterbury. With the change of season upon us, it’s time to enjoy a good hearty meal from the delicious new winter menu at Trevinos Restaurant & Bar.

rom a melt-in-your-mouth venison ragout to a tasty chicken stroganoff, the scrumptious selection of Mediterranean-themed dishes will warm your heart as the weather cools down. Alongside the new winter fare, the original range of favourites is still available, including the seafood paella and chicken parmigiana. Whether you fancy the beef osso bucco: braised beef shanks served with truffle whipped mash, gremolata and roast vegetables, or the tagine from the Siesta section of the menu: Moroccan spiced slow cooked stew with meat, vegetables and dried fruits, served with rice – the extensive variety is sure to please all palates. “We also have a new tapas ‘light bites’ section, to share or self-indulge,” says owner, Marty Fuller. The Trevinos $20 Cork & Fork menu is a popular option for lunch, which includes a beverage. This can all be enjoyed in a cosy atmosphere by the open fire, making it an ideal setting to gather, whether you’re dining out with family, or meeting friends for a drink or two. Trevinos not only has a great reputation for its fabulous food – it also provides the perfect venue for functions, including 21st birthdays, anniversaries, family reunions or business seminars and conferences. With a private function room, Trevinos can cater for 10 – 200 people. ADVENTURE

It’s an anything but ordinary romantic tale: Canterbury girl meets French guy while both working at a bakery in Ireland. They fall in love and dream of opening a bakery in West Melton.

T

If a taste of France is what you want for an event or an office shout, talk to the friendly team.

hat’s how it happened, says Kara Martinez. Five years in the thinking and planning, she and husband Jean-Francois opened Les Delices in January 2017. Both are bakers and have lived and worked in the area for the last twelve years. Les Delices is a little bit of patisserie come to Selwyn. JeanFrancois was born and trained in Brittany. He brings these skills and methods to his own bakery where everything is hand-rolled and baked fresh. Every day, baskets are full of specialty breads; brioche, sour dough and loaves such as walnut and raisin. Of course there are pastries and other treats too: eclairs, fruit tarts, Danishes, macarons, baguettes, pies and sandwiches. And no French styled bakery would be complete without kouignamann, a caramelised crusted Breton pastry, originally created in Jean-Francois’ home region. There is barista made coffee to go, and seating inside and out. Relax and take in the aromas and the atmosphere of West Melton’s busy little patisserie. If a taste of France is what you want for an event or an office shout, talk to the friendly team about pre-ordering some delights. Les Delices is in the new West Melton shopping Centre at 9/736 Weedons Ross Road. For more information, call 03 421 6559 and visit the Facebook page.

STAIRWAY HEAVEN TO DÉCOR By Kate Pierson

Cantilevered stairs have the ability to transform architecture into art.

W

hile they appear to defy gravity, these ‘floating’ or ‘suspended’ stairs are independent stairs strategically anchored into a stringer beam or bearing wall. Intelligent design has offered many inspiring options with staircase styles (depending on the structure and space) able to be straight or curved. While materials always come down to personal preference, the meteoric rise of the industrial aesthetic has seen significant interest in raw materials like steel and concrete. The distilled essence of minimalism, cantilevered stairs are synonymous with elegance and sophistication. Although a popular contemporary innovation, bespoke creations can actually fit in with many different home styles – from modern to classic. Giving the impression of walking on air, one of the key benefits of the design is its ability to imbue a space with a great sense of openness. The flipside is that not all homes can accommodate such a feature hence the importance of consulting the Building Code before embracing the concept. Cantilevered stairs can also be ruthless with the bank balance. But again, their timeless style means the investment pays for itself in the long-term. In short, you’ve discovered your stairway to décor heaven.

THE FOCUS + THE FO By Kate Pierson

As the saying goes, ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ and that’s an especially apt maxim when it comes to our home.

H

elping our home to fulfil its potential is a work in progress, and while being led entirely by trends can create thematic chaos, accepting the helping hand of industry experts can take the pressure off; particularly when it comes to selecting the colour palette for our homes. This autumn and winter, the experts at Dulux are promoting raw, pared back beauty derived from the Dulux Colour Trends’ Construct theme. Inspired by the renewed interest in Brutalism, combined with the influence of the geometric shapes of the Bauhaus period, this minimalist look focuses on natural materials, structure and form. Tactility is a key element in the winter palette, balancing textures with layered accessories introducing multi-dimensional interest points. Offering a dramatic backdrop to highlighting furnishings and accessories, enabling them to make a powerful statement, these moodier hues are modern and contemporary.

As well as being highly durable and providing a gorgeous rustic look, they eliminate the issues of the extra bracing and weight associated with concrete countertops.” The passionate and highly experienced bunch at Flash Concrete provides a full service, from inspiration and design, to creation and completion. With a display centre in Sydenham, clients can see and touch the product before making their decisions. “We can help you manage your project every step of the way and inspire you to create something unique that will give you great pride and satisfaction,” Jocelyn says. “We have a strong appreciation and understanding of concrete – it’s a lot more versatile than many realise.” Another display centre will soon be at the Home Ideas Centre on Mandeville Street. TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS Cymon Allfrey

ARE WE ABANDONING CENTRAL CITY LIVING IN FAVOUR OF SUBURBIA? ARCHITECT CYMON ALLFREY OFFERS AN INSIGHT INTO WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE CHARACTER OF THE CITY.

M

y wife was away recently and faced with having to feed my two teenage daughters I found myself walking down Montreal Street (with them in tow) heading to The Villas for dinner. Our walk was dark, with only the streetlights and occasional passing

car lighting the way. It seemed somehow eerie that the traditional two-storey villas that line the street were unlit at 7pm on a Friday evening. No longer are these characterfilled buildings used for their original residential purpose, a purpose that

would see their windows sparkling with light throughout the evening. Instead these buildings are being converted into cafes, restaurants, office spaces and other commercial uses. While they bring an amazing sense of character to their commercial users, it got me thinking about the concept of a livable city. While the Christchurch City Council has been crafting the city plan around accessibility and sustainability, livability is perhaps a less considered concept. As an architect, this is a concept that is ingrained

new residential housing in the city will bring pockets of this life back to the city. in how we operate; it is our job to be specialists in understanding not only how people live, but in creating the perfect environment for living. As we constrain the city core through planning and zoning, we are potentially restricting the residential purposes many of our inner city buildings were destined for. Consider Worcester Boulevard, the numerous buildings that line this street were once homes, now they operate on a commercial level. There isn’t the same dynamism in the street.

One of the most exciting things about any building or architecture is how it can change as light makes way for darkness, and vice versa. Windows that are dark by day turn bright by night, revealing something different about the buildings. And it is this, turning on of the lights, that we are seeing less and less of in our central city. The risk we face, is that as the daytime occupants of these buildings vacate for home at 5pm, a level of activity, of occupancy and livability is lost. There are a number of well-considered

ideas being put in place across the city and the pleasure that these character buildings bring to the overall enjoyment and aesthetic of the street can’t be ignored. There is a double edge sword, as perhaps without their commercial occupants, these wonderful buildings may not have continued to stand in the wake of the earthquakes. But what we need to consider is the consequences of the ideas. Once these Victorian mansions illuminated our city and gave it a backdrop. Now this is fading, and with it a level of energy in the central city that will be hard to get back. While new residential housing will bring pockets of this life back to the city, it will be left lacking in strict commercial zones. The flip side is that within the four avenues there are large chunks of commercial sprawl that have been restrained (consider Chester Street East and its surrounds) allowing for residential properties to reign supreme. We just need to ensure that not all of our beautiful grand homes are left deserted at the end of the working day as their occupants head for suburbia. www.caarc.co.nz

A PERSONAL TOUCH It would be a fair observation to make that in any business it’s rare for clients to experience the added benefit of the owner’s strategic vision, passion and expertise. This is what makes Newline Builders so special, differentiating it from its competitors.

ommitted to the manta ‘We build quality, not quantity’, the business’ modus operandi is to help its clients make their architectural dream a reality. Owner and operator Matt Graham takes pride in being a hands-on manager, leading a small but dedicated team on projects defined by innovation and lateral thinking. “Having a small, tight knit team that can be trusted is important to me,” Matt confirms. “We pride ourselves on being exceptionally organised and offer short lead-in times for commencing a build project.” Offering the full package from the design stage through to the final landscaping, Matt says building was always in his DNA. “I remember being a young fella and watching my Grandad building a sleep out. I sat back and observed the entire process and my passion developed from there.” The business’ impressive portfolio continues to grow thanks to innovative jobs like a project that involved creating living quarters at both ends of a house. This meant building two kitchens, two living areas and ensuites. This was a five month build, which is commensurate with the length of the team’s other projects. FUNCTIONAL

STYLE

New Zealanders have a reputation for being very quick to adopt innovative technology. We certainly know that’s the case when it comes to mobile devices, but according to Lesley Storm of Edward Gibbon, it also applies to toilets.

“W

e’ve recently introduced the Caroma Cleanflush Urbane toilet suite to our showroom. These are rimless toilets with breakthrough flushing technology to deliver a more hygienic whole bowl clean without having to expend lots of elbow grease. Everyone loves not having to spend time cleaning ‘under the rim’ and when you consider the health benefits, rimless is an impressive advancement.” Rimless toilet technology had been making waves in Europe so Caroma not only wanted to be part of this new development, but to improve it. Led by their Research and Development Manager, Dr Steve Cummings, the Caroma team dedicated two years to producing Cleanflush’s breakthrough

flush solution, including an innovative flow splitter for optimum wash coverage, sculpted flow contour for superior washdown, and a flow balancer that controls and directs the flush. And by removing the rim of the bowl, there’s nowhere for germs to hide, making cleaning quick and easy. “The Urbane Cleanflush is an elegantly versatile design that works in both contemporary and classic bathroom environments. The soft close lid and back to the wall feature enhance the bathroom design by hiding the inlet and outlet pipes.” Visit Edward Gibbon on Cranford Street to view the style of the Caroma Cleanflush Urbane in the showroom and to watch the video of how the Cleanflush system works.

BUILDING PEOPLE’S LIVES Building houses wasn’t enough for the team at Casa Construction. Earlier this year the award-winning design and build company established its own foundation, the Casa Charitable trust, with the express aim of also helping to build lives.

T

he trust was formed to assist those in the community and offshore who need a helping hand to build or rebuild their lives due to poverty, debilitating diseases, disadvantage and hardship. The trust is involved with a number of charitable ventures

with one of the key recipients being Ronald McDonald South Island House (RMHSI). As a room sponsor at RHMSI, Casa offered to host one of the iconic RMHSI Supper Clubs at its Forfar Street show home. Chef Chantelle Quinn of Twentyfour Catering will provide a dinner for eight guests at the show home tomorrow night, 9 June, with all funds raised going towards providing free accommodation for families needing to stay at RMHSI. Casa Director Phil Badger says, “Hosting charitable events is one of the things we’re looking to do more and more with the show home. It’s great to be able to kick off with RMHSI Supper Club; it’s just another way we can support RMHSI. “This will be the first of many events we hold at the Casa show home. It’s a great piece of architecture situated conveniently in the central city, so it makes sense to use it to raise additional funds for our charity partners such as the Aorangi Foundation and Haagar. Tomorrow though, is about RMHSI. We’re thrilled to be a part of the Christchurch Supper Club 2017. We attended as guests last year and it’s a great night.” As per the magic of previous events, guests who purchase supper club tickets will be informed of the chefs and venues involved, but will be treated to the ultimate element of surprise with their experience location to be revealed on the night. For more information about the Casa Charitable Trust, go to casaconstruction.co.nz/about-casa/casa-charitable-trust/ or follow Casa Construction on Facebook to find out about upcoming charitable events at the showhome.

FREEDOM FURNITURE AKORI CUSHION IN MUSTARD

Beautiful gifts and homewares available at Shelf Home+Gifts.

M It’s definitely an acquired taste for many a palate, but when it comes to the palette of the décor variety, there are very few naysayers on the subject of mustard.

ustard packs a pretty punch but its boldness means it is best paired with neutral, dark colours. It is a beloved companion to black, navy, grey, brown and olive. Depending on the shade of mustard, it can also work well with bright or pastel tones. Not everyone wants to dive into décor that heavily favours this kind of hue, so if you’ve not had much experience with the colour, perhaps start with smaller accents like throws and cushions and test the waters first.

AUTO PLUS AUTO NEWS ROAD TESTS NEW MODELS AUTO EVENTS

SPEEDING TICKET By Ben Selby

Just think: the billions of dollars lead-foot motorists have had to pay in speeding fines over the years since the car’s inception can all be traced back to an 1896 Arnold Benz Motor Carriage, the first car in history to be issued a speeding ticket.

T

he Benz will be showcasing as part of the Concours of Elegance 2017 at England’s Hampton Court Palace in September along with many other priceless pieces of automotive exotica. Built when motoring was still in its infancy, the Benz Motor Carriage was travelling at four times the speed limit at a severely hectic eight miles per hour before being pulled over by a policeman on a bicycle. At that time, the law required all cars to be led by a man on foot holding a red flag signalling to passers-by the arrival of a motor car. Plus, the speed limit was a dismal two miles per hour. Driver Walter Arnold making his way through Kent was not only speeding but had no man in front with a red flag. As a result, Walter was convicted of speeding and forced to pay a fine - a whole shilling plus costs. The law was changed later that year when the speed limit was raised to 14 miles per hour, and the red flag man was disregarded.

A GEARSHIFT

TOWARDS EXCEPTIONAL By Andy Burchall

After testing Aprilia’s 2016 Touno 1100 last year at Ruapuna, the offer from Aprilia New Zealand to test the new 2017 Tuono Factory at Hampton Downs - especially flown in for this press launch - was an offer too good to miss.

A

fter reading through the updates introduced for this year, it was instantly clear that Aprilia has worked hard at making a series of changes that transform the already extremely

capable Tuono into something truly exceptional. The new APRC (Aprilia Performance Ride Control) system now incorporates a pitch sensor in addition to the lean and yaw sensors of the old system.

The cut and thrust of the new system is that the rider can now select his preferred rider mode. The control mechanisms include the amount of intervention from the cornering ABS and the desired wheelie control using two settings – this can be turned off completely. Therefore, it’s possible to tailor the bike to the road (or track) conditions as desired. As I selected first gear - pit limiter engaged (yes you read that right) - and glanced down at the new TFT dashboard, trundling down pit lane, I wondered what difference, if any, I would feel compared to last year’s model. This was answered almost immediately. The new front end felt so much more compliant and, dare I say it, friendly, if you can call a bike making 175BHP ‘friendly’. After a sighting lap at gentle pace to find my way round (first time round Hampton Downs), I upped the pace and was immediately impressed at how well the bike turned. On my second lap I felt comfortable enough to drop the bike not just onto my knee, but to trust the front, so that even with my boots tucked up out of the way, I was still touching my toe slider on the tarseal. Make no mistake; the new Aprilia Tuono Factory is one special bike. If you fancy one of these amazing machines, pop down and have a chat to us at First European.

most iconic models, including the ultra-rare DB4 GT Zagato and 007’s legendary DB5. Designed by Ian Callum, it’s easy to see why the DB7 is one of the most beautiful cars ever. Curvaceous hips, long bonnet and a sloping rear three quarter makes for a stunning front engine, rear drive grand tourer. The DB7’s oomph comes from a 3.2 litre supercharged straight six, engineered by Tom Walkinshaw Racing. With a five speed manual or four speed automatic box, power peaks at 250kW and 489 Nm of torque. Inside, the whole cabin wraps itself around you, leaving you feeling cocooned by your leather clad surroundings. Everything is within easy reach and the combination of leather, suede and real wood just exudes quality, though taller folk may find it a bit tight and the rear seats are really only suitable for children and excess luggage. However, front and rear visibility is surprisingly good. On the move, the DB7 soothes your brow by effortlessly gliding from bend to bend. Plant boot, the bonnet rises, there is a gradual surge from the purring supercharged six, and off you go. While not lightening fast by today’s standards, the DB7 is still faster than fast enough. Topping out at 270km/h, it will reach the national limit in 5.8 seconds. However, trying to push this car like that feels wrong, as it is at its happiest cruising at a brisk yet sedate pace. At 100km/h the only thing you hear is faint tyre roar and despite weighing in at 1800kg, it can manage itself well when the going gets twisty. DB7 production wound up in 2003 where upon it received a new V12 heart, more power and subtle style changes. This is no boy racer sports car, but a distinguished gentleman’s express and one of the nicest ways to enter Aston Martin ownership. This 1998 example was supplied by Waimak Classic Cars and is for sale. Visit www.waimakclaasiccars.co.nz for more information.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE TSUNAMI OF ELECTRIC OPTIONS THAT ARE ABOUT TO BE UNLEASHED IN 2018, THEN THIS IS A VERY GOOD SCENARIO TO TEST THE WATERS IN AN EASILY ACCESSIBLE WAY.

FEEL THE ELECTRIC ENERGY By Nicholas Henare

V

We’re going to be feeling electric in the next 12 months with a range of electric cars that are injecting the auto scene with a real liveliness. The question is, which one will you choose and how do you evaluate the options?

W, in conjunction with Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch Airports, have come up with an innovative angle to introduce you to their electric Golf, the eGolf, with the Electric Day Pass. I was invited out to the airport to a function to discuss the joint venture between VW, CIAL and Europcar. It’s a fact, driving habits are changing, and the Monday to Friday programme allows regular business travellers who fly in and out of any of the three cities, the opportunity to book an e-Golf for their day of travel, free of charge. The keys are collected at the Europcar Hire desk and the cars are picked up from and dropped back to prime parking spots at all three airports. I think the team has settled on a win/win idea

for everyone. Who wouldn’t want the option of driving the eGolf for free? Driving the eGolf is actually a really good experience. I took it out for a spin after the function and found it a wonderful car to drive. Gone were my preconceptions and misconceptions, which were replaced by an admiration from the moment I picked up the model. This admiration continued thanks to its ease of use and speed. It’s a tasteful little number and the facelift model with increased battery power/range will be heading our way soon. By the time that happens, the charging stations and vehicle range should see any worries regarding electric options disappear. Corporates such as Icebreaker and AMP have already signed up. If you are interested in the tsunami of electric options that are about to be unleashed in 2018, then this is a very good scenario to test the waters in an easily accessible way. Bon Voyage.

We are proud to be your local tyre & mechanical service centre. Drive into our workshops or our fleet of mobile tyre service vans will come to you at home, work, anywhere in Christchurch.
