o not surprising then that Archibalds Motors would seek to capture these same elements in its new Porsche showroom in the city, the delivery of which was tasked to award-winning Map Architects and construction company Hanham & Philp. They have definitely delivered on that. The luxury vehicles that come under the Porsche marquee are certainly at home in their new flagship dealership on the corner of Tuam and Antigua Streets, where the floor

space covers some 1500 square metres and is framed by steel and floor to ceiling glass. Plans for the new development – which opened in November – have been on the drawing board for 10 years, with the post-quake need to rebuild its site and the area around it being rezoned as the Health Precinct ramping up a longheld vision for an innovative mixed-use building. Today the exceptional twolevel high curved façade stands just 200 metres from where Alex Archibald founded his family’s Christchurch motor company a century ago. Topped with three floors of medical tenancies, including the Christchurch Clinical Studies Trust on the top floor, the building covers a total of some 6700 square metres. Much like the top of the range vehicles are right at home in the new surroundings, the exceptional space of the new Archibalds Porsche showroom is right at home in the rebuilding city. After all, what better fit than a worldleading marquee in a worldleading CBD?

here’s something addictive about success. Whether it’s kicking bad habits, forming better ones or setting our lives on the paths we aspire to. However, we’ve talked to some highly motivated women recently who don’t set New Year’s resolutions – including Chelsea Winter in our last issue and Karen Walker in the pages ahead – which has seen me reflecting on resolutions and what they seek to accomplish. As Physiotherapist and Pilates therapist Cath Julius points out on page 39, humans are emotional beings and goals that focus on what we want to achieve rather than how we want to feel is what lets us down in the resolution stakes. So focus on the feelings that will result from the actions. If being able to run that 5km is going to bring you soul-fulfilling contentment; if it’s going to make you feel strong, confident and healthy and those are the feelings you seek, then I say make all the resolutions in the world. Whether you choose to set resolutions or not, I say do whatever it is that makes you happy. Step into this New Year without ABC AUDITED baggage from the last. If it feeds your soul, do it. If it makes you want to get out of bed in the morning with a smile, carry on. So rather than focusing on resolutions, why not use the New Year to take stock of where you are and what you want out of life? Importantly, do whatever it is that makes you feel good. Life’s too short for AUDITED anything else.

Who helped bring your castle to life? Sarah Scott was my architect and, along with UK staff member Jenny, who knew loads about castles, we designed the castle from aspects of several different castles that I liked. What difficulties did you face during the build? Mainly rules and regulations. At the time of building, the law stated we could have five guests and build as a private house. As we’ve four ensuite rooms, I applied for eight guests. That put me into a hotel category. The firedoors and regulations were extremely costly. How did you overcome these obstacles? Once the project was underway, there was no turning back. I worked with builder Mike Spier on every aspect, and was always there to watch progress and provide innovative ideas when problems arose. Describe sleeping in your castle We’ve a beautiful bedroom. At night we turn the main lights out and switch the star lights on. Watching the stars twinkling on our ceiling is pretty special. Very different from our farm cottage of 35 years.

Do you ever have ‘pinch me!’ moments? Yes, with the changing moods of weather. On still nights, the sunsets reflect a mirror image of the lake. On misty mornings, the castle appears like a ghost through the mist. That’s when I think how lucky I am to look at such a beautiful building. What landscaping remains to be completed? A bridge is to be built across to the island, so that eventually the castle will stand alone, surrounded entirely by a lake. What gives the Chatelaine of Riverstone Castle her happiest moments? Showing visitors around the castle makes me very proud. People nowadays build open plan homes, whereas I love rooms that aren’t the same. Every room is different here – some traditional, some modern, some extravagantly decorated and some relaxing. What’s your vision for the Castle and Riverstone 20-30 years from now? Neil and I will be getting our telegram from the King! The castle’s been built to last hundreds of years, so I hope it will always be known as Granny Smith’s Castle. Eventually it will become a guest B&B; that way we’ll meet interesting people who will hopefully keep us young. The Riverstone complex grows every year. This year we have to do major renovations to bring the main shop up to fire and building regulations. We will build a farm shop selling our own and other local farmers’ produce. The future of Riverstone is ever changing.

When did you decide to fulfil your childhood dream of having your own castle? The day I turned 60 – February 19, 2008. I thought if we were serious about building the castle, we’d better get started and I was right.

Gets the sartorial edge Karen Walker designs have always had a bit of edge. Described once as the “consummate collision of attitude and aptitude”, Walker has added a more literal edge to her latest collection, Bad Apple.

I

nspired by a day at an orchard in Upstate New York, the new ready-towear collection is marked by apple tree references, but in classic Walker style, there’s a wry twist; look closely and you’ll see that medieval apple tree print has a small serpent concealed within its branches. We caught up with up with Walker to discuss the collection and what the New Year has in store for one of the country’s most beloved designers. Can you tell us a bit about your new readyto-wear collection Bad Apple? It’s preppy dressing for people who want to misbehave with lots of print and tailoring and denim.

What does the collection mean to you and what are your favourite pieces? I love the apple tree with the hidden snake print especially and also the denim suit (featured on the cover) which we’re thrilled to have had to release early after Mrs Obama wore it on her recent book tour. What do your upcoming collections have in store for us? Our March 2019 collection pays homage to two great female chess players. You’re in a high-paced creative role, how do you unwind and prevent burnout? Handstands on my yoga mat, chess with my daughter (she’s yet to beat me), reading,


one on one playing piano and playing tennis are, I find, all pretty good ways to unwind. Also, I do find myself anxiously waiting through autumn until there’s enough snow on Coronet Peak to get the snowboard out and I’ve also recently taken up running (thanks to my new Adidas UltraBoost runners!) and I find I love it. I do also love a history podcast, especially the BBC’s In Our Time. Also, Glenn Gould playing absolutely anything but especially his first version of the Goldberg Variations. What’s your design philosophy? Does it make me smile? Where do you draw your inspiration from? Anywhere and everywhere. What does personal success mean to you? Waking up looking forward to and excited by my day.

What are your New Year’s resolutions? I don’t do New Year resolutions. I try to go into every day of the year with focus, clarity and passion. What are you most looking forward to over the next 12 months? We’ve got some very exciting projects in place for 2019 and I’m looking forward to pulling them together and seeing what we can create.

city again.” One of the most prestigious examples of street art is of the late Parihaka elder, Whero O Te Tangi Bailey, known to many as Poppy. This amazing woman has been painted on the side of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Christchurch. The mural is painted by Canadian street artist Kevin Ledo and based on a photo taken by New Zealand photographer Stu Robertson, as part of his Peace in 10,000 Hands project to renew the conversation for peace. Art is a huge part of our culture without us being aware of it, Caroline says. “I read a lovely quote from a woman that I wanted to share, who said that art is important as a way of exploring and understanding the world around us. She said, ‘we are not art experts but whether it’s creating our own art, visiting museums and galleries or finding beauty in the world around us, I value these special moments as a family’.” Along with Super Senior tours and Food tours, tailored tours for special events

It was a packed and attentive audience that gathered to hear Tony Buettner, Blue Zones National Spokesperson, give his second presentation at Alpine View Lifestyle Village, courtesy of their TRILife Talks Wellness Programme.

T

ony shared remarkable stories of five diverse places in the world, known as the Blue Zones, where the populations have one thing in common – their longevity. The five Blue Zones are: Sardinia, Italy; Okinawa, Japan; Lorna Linda, California; Nicoya, Costa Rica, and Ikaria, Greece. On average, the inhabitants of Blue Zones live ten years longer than the rest of us. It was in 2004 that Tony’s explorer and researcher brother Dan, along with National Geographic and longevity experts, began looking into regions where people lived to very ripe old ages. Dan’s findings were published in National

Geographic’s November 2005 issue, The Secrets of Living Longer. The research has continued on these regions of centenarians for more than three decades from his Minnesotabased company Blue Zones. For those of us who have been led to believe that longevity is down to good genes, think again. Buettner’s research shows the link between longevity and genes is only 20 percent; at 80 percent, it’s lifestyle that is our roadmap for longevity. Tony spoke of The Nine Commonalities, or as he calls them, “The Power Nine lessons of living a longer, happy life,” that Blue Zones people share.

Have a sense of purpose: It has been proved that those who have a sense of purpose live seven years longer than those who don’t.

Drink in moderation: By all means enjoy your glass of wine, but make it only a couple, like the Sardinians.

5.

Eat less red meat: Follow the Mediterranean diet of vegetables, beans, olive oils and fruits; 95 percent of the Blue Zone populations consume a plant-based whole grain diet.

Eat less: As the Okinawans do, stop eating when you feel 80 percent full. Try the Blue Zoners rule: Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.

Families: Family life takes priority in Blue Zone regions.

Be social: According to research, isolation is a major cause of early death. Having a laugh with friends is very good for our health and our stress levels. Laughter truly is the best medicine.

Faith: Attending a faith-based community four times a month will see you living 14 years longer than those who don’t.

Previously, the only babies in the country with access to a pasteurised milk bank service were premature or sick babies at Christchurch Hospital’s neo-natal unit. The Rotary Community Breast Milk Bank extends that service. The Christchurch scheme based at St George’s Hospital and launched in June 2018 was initiated by four local Rotary clubs and is supported through donations and fundraising. The milk bank is currently open one day a week to receive donor milk and to dispense it once it has been pasteurised. It is staffed by volunteers and it is hoped that eventually the bank will be open five days a week. Such a service needs continuing funding to pay for the pasteurisation through the Neo Natal Unit and the CDHB and storage of donated breast milk. am a life-long fan of Queen, they are part of the soundtrack of my misspent youth, so it is fantastic news to hear that Showbiz Christchurch is staging the New Zealand theatre company premiere of We Will Rock You here in our iconic Isaac Theatre Royal this coming March/April. This show has been rocking theatre fans all over the world since 2002, featuring 24 of Queen’s greatest songs woven into a hit show written by comedic genius Ben Elton (writer of Popcorn and Blackadder). More than 60 million people have seen it live in 28 countries, so now it is Christchurch’s turn! Christchurch has certainly hit a golden age for major musicals with Showbiz

Christchurch since its return to the rebuilt Isaac Theatre Royal in 2015, Showbiz manager Michael Bayly says. “Showbiz is at a pinnacle of our 80 year history. Animal print is leading the pack this season, as designers tap into their wild side.

eopard, tiger, zebra and even snakeskin have been seen prowling the streets in 2018 and now they’re set to make their impact known even more as we enter 2019. Tom Ford, Victoria Beckham, Calvin Klein and Michael Kors are just some of the designers who have been indulging their animal instinct and transforming the catwalk into an urban jungle. Despite an otherwise intricate pattern, animal print has a muted colour palette which has seen it pegged as 2019’s equivalent to a neutral, with a chic, almost understated elegance (note, we said ‘almost’).

It’s exceptional teamed with an otherwise all-black ensemble and striking teamed with an all-white outfit, or why not get wild with some serious power clashing? However you choose to wear it, it’s officially a reliable print that can be paired with just about any look. Christian Dior famously wrote in his 1954 manual, The Little Dictionary of Fashion that “to wear leopard you must have a kind of femininity which is a little bit sophisticated. If you are fair and sweet, don’t wear it.” Since then, it’s always been a little bit sexy, a little bit raunchy, a little bit daring and a little bit wild.

The gall with gallstones A four-inch, pear-shaped organ tucked comfortably away below your liver, the gallbladder is a handy organ to have on your side. But when things get tense, it can cause a lot of problems – and pain.

T

he main job of the gallbladder is to store bile until the body needs it to help digest fatty food. “When we eat, the gallbladder contracts and squeezes out bile, which acts like detergent – it breaks up what we’ve eaten so it can be dissolved and absorbed,” Christchurch surgeon Ross Roberts from The Endoscopy Clinic explains. However, sometimes crystal-like deposits that can range in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball can wreak absolute havoc on this organ and it’s not a lot of fun for the body housing them. Sudden and rapidly intensifying pain in the centre or upper right portion of your abdomen, back pain between your shoulder blades, pain in your right shoulder and nausea or vomiting can all be symptoms of gallstones. About 70 percent of gallstones are cholesterol stones, formed when the bile contains too much cholesterol. As many as 20 percent of people

produce gallstones however, not all develop symptoms. There are genetics links to gallstones and being older, female and overweight increases your risk. Pregnant women and those who have had weightloss surgery are also at higher risk, with evidence suggesting that yo-yo dieting may also play a part. Some gallstone problems only flare up occasionally, when they get lodged against the narrow neck of the gallbladder once it starts contracting to release bile after a large or fatty meal, with pain subsiding once the gallbladder relaxes again. Other gallstones get forced out of the gallbladder and into the ducts that carry bile from the liver to the small intestine, where they can cause further debilitating complications. Sometimes gallstones pass through the liver, into the digestive system and eventually out of the body, naturally. However, it’s not a straightforward journey and they can cause a lot of pain and

damage on the way. In fact, even if your body gets rid of one gallstone, that’s unlikely to be the end of the matter. “In most people, gallstones are not just singular – there are usually more gallstones left in the gallbladder,” Ross says. For those who experience symptoms, the gallbladder generally needs to be removed using keyhole surgery. In most cases this is a straightforward operation that requires a one-night hospital stay and a two-week recovery period. With our livers generally capable of producing enough bile to deal with even the fattiest meals and any extra able to be stored in the bile ducts, we can survive – quite comfortably – without a gallbladder. “If you don’t have a gallbladder you can digest food perfectly well. It’s a luxury, not a necessity.” “I say to people that there’s no point in picking up the eggs – you have to get rid of the chicken,” Ross says. “The gallbladder here is laying the gallstones.”

Do you like things ‘shockingly simple’ and if so, how does that translate to the catering? If you want every guest to the ceremony to receive something immediately afterward, would you prefer that to be a glass of champagne, a mocktail, or an ice-cream? Solemnity is still required for the ‘I take you..’ part of the ceremony. There isn’t much solemnity in daily life, so this bit is superlatively memorable. Think carefully about the wording of the vows. Do whatever you can to make the day a personalised celebration where guests are comfortable and catered-to. One popular getaway is the Hurunui River Retreat. Nestled into a peaceful rural valley are two fully contained cottages close to the Hurunui River for swimming and fishing. Chill out during the day, enjoy nearby vineyards and restaurants and at night relax in the outside tub taking in the spectacular sky and listening to the frogs. The Tiromoana Bush Walkway is one of many walks in the area, and offers a fantastic hiking experience for all ages and abilities. pice traders first seduced Brits with the leafy elixir in the 1700s. However, it has increasingly crept onto café countertops here, as real competition to coffee. Tea has a comforting aroma and uplifting health properties, as quality blends seduce hot-drink addicts. The caffeine amount in tea varies with brew and blend, but it is around a third to half that of a cup of coffee. The question then arises, black, green or white? Black tea has been reinvented by the industry, boutique New Zealand businesses included, by blending additional ingredients – which read like poetry. Rosebuds and black tea is marriage in a teapot. Green tea can be infused with the likes of orange or mint to seduce newcomers to its natural benefits. White tea comes from young, minimally processed leaves. China White is a Christchurch company that jazzes up this delicate flavour with ginger or jasmine. Some specialist teas are of unique origins, such as Darjeeling from West Bengal or Oolong from China. Try a sip first, before adding milk and sugar. To convert the traditional ‘gumboot’ tea drinker, offer the fancier stuff and they’ll likely ask for a second cup. Cafés often present a loose-leaf in a teapot experience – and it’s all about presentation. Tea cups of fine-white bone china or gilded vintage floral, make an afternoon tea gathering quite something. Meanwhile, chilled fruitinfused tea is beautiful served in a wine glass. The nice thing about meeting up over a pot of tea for two, is that a pot lasts longer than a fast-cooling flat white – and so then can the conversation.

What does a chef eat in his/her time off? Do you ever fast? What’s your summer fave? I love steamed Dim Sum! I purchase it from Church Corner in Christchurch – pork buns, prawn and chive dumplings… it’s my go to dinner when neither my wife nor I want to cook. Fasting? No. But I do crave vegetables and drop meat from a couple of meals a week. In summer I love fresh fruit and vegetables, grilled asparagus or broccolini, roast figs and of course, lovely fresh fish!

Metropol catches up with Crowne Plaza Executive Chef Hamish Watt to discuss his tips of the trade, the most exciting dish he’s turned his hand to recently and what’s up his culinary sleeve for 2019.

It must be a high-stress, exacting sort of thing being an executive chef. What secret can you share to making cooking easier for the general population cooking dinner for the family? Planning, planning, planning! You can never over-plan a dinner or a big event. The biggest trick is to get every dish as close to being ready as possible without spoiling the ingredients. For example, blanch and refresh your vegetables so they’re still crisp and only need two minutes to finish off. Make all your sauces and dressings ahead of time so they just need to be heated. Finally, I learned the hard way to always make garnishes first because they are the first thing to suffer when something goes wrong (and it always does!)

Do you see any particular food or drink trends which are sweeping through the developed world? Or are you trying to create any? Buying directly from the farm is only getting more popular! We all love to know where our food comes from. What is the most exciting dish you’ve been cooking lately? And who typically loves it? Whitebait cakes with cauliflower puree and tarragon dressing. I wouldn’t call it groundbreaking but it’s a simple dish with great texture and flavour. It’s a take on an English fish cake but using local, fresh New Zealand whitebait. Tourists always want to try whitebait and locals go nuts for it too! What’s your pick of holiday destinations and holiday style, if money was no object? I love travelling and exploring what gastronomy treasures a region or country has to offer. Sitting in one spot for a week would send me stir crazy! Jumping in a camper and hitting the open road is my idea of heaven. Since being in New Zealand, my wife and I have clocked up a lot of kilometres exploring the South Island! What’s your favourite dining destination anywhere in the world, the first place on the itinerary if you could be whisked there tomorrow? Some of my most memorable meals were unforeseen! Europe in summer is just special; there’s a buzz in the air, sitting outside in a medieval courtyard in France or Italy eating local specialties. I once stumbled across a monastery in Austria with a hidden beer garden, serving only one beer and a grand array of local meats, cheeses pickles and breads. What’s up your culinary sleeve for 2019? We have a new menu coming out in March with a selection of dishes which feature ingredients all sourced from within 70 kilometres – talk about local!

Salted caramel nut brownies A decadent recipe that can be made ahead, even frozen – with or without the caramel sauce. So what are you waiting for?

INGREDIENTS 1 cup caster sugar 1 cup heavy cream 1/2 cup butter 3/4 cup chocolate dots 1/4 cup cocoa powder 3 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup sugar 1 cup white flour 1 cup chopped nuts such as walnuts, pecans or almonds Coarse salt to taste Vanilla ice cream

ME THOD 1.

In a saucepan, melt the caster sugar, add the heavy cream and stir constantly until a smooth caramel is formed. Set the caramel aside to cool.

2.

In a saucepan, melt butter and chocolate over low heat. Remove the chocolate mix from the heat and add cocoa, then eggs, one at a time, mixing well between each addition.

3.

Add the sugar, vanilla, flour and walnuts. Mix well and place half the mixture in a cake pan greased with butter.

4.

Drizzle some of the caramel mix over the batter in the cake pan, then cover with the remaining batter. Bake in preheated oven at 180°C for approximately 30 minutes. Test with a toothpick inserted into the centre of the brownie. The brownies are done when only a few moist crumbs of brownie come out with the toothpick.

5.

Remove from the oven and pour remaining caramel on top of hot brownies. Sprinkle top with coarse salt and serve with ice cream.

The Perfect Pairing At The Monday Room, cuisine is about so much more than food – it’s an experience.

eavily influenced by her Finnish background, Head Chef Eeva Torvinen uses techniques that include curing, brining and pickling, while Finnish flavours such as berries, buttermilk, liquorice, rye and malt bring flavour to the ingredients. “I want to create dishes that make people talk while they dine.” Metropol talks to Eeva about the dish and Wine Consultant at Wine Sentience, Stephen Wong finds its perfect pairing.

Wine Match: Bellbird Spring Home Block White 2015 - Waipara, North Canterbury According to Wine Consultant at Wine Sentience, Stephen Wong, the earthy, yet sweet flavours are an interesting combination. “At first glance, they suggest a red wine, but for the summer season, exaggerating a dry, earthy and dense flavour profile doesn’t make sense.” He has opted instead to frame the earthiness through contrast, choosing to complement the acidity, the almonds,

brioche and the curded yolk with something fruity, sweet, slightly chilled and white. Inspired by the concept of forest foraging, Wong has selected Guy Porter’s field blended white, the Bellbird Spring Home Block White 2015. Four aromatic varieties come together in this wine - Pinot Gris, Riesling, Muscat and Gewürztraminer. Together they combine the lifted floral scented smells of summer with the savoury richness and texture derived from Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer. “The honeyed character it displays works perfectly with a buttery brioche and the intensity of egg yolk. The savoury, aged characters resonate with the mushroomy base of the dish and highlight its inherent sweetness through contrast (think of how salted caramel and savoury desserts work).”

Meal: Into the Woods “This dish is a story of my childhood. We spent a lot of time in the forest picking mushrooms and berries with my parents. This dish is an enchanted reminder of my childhood.” An earthy umami flavour from the forest floor, it features a creamy mushroom pate and curded egg yolk; salty, rich and unctuous, intensifying the flavour of the yolk. The raisin almond oil adds a sweet, dense crunchy texture. The cranberry pearls are sour; exploding with a burst of flavour in your mouth. that would not otherwise make the grade. Until wild and interesting becomes the new normal, they sport a cheaper price tag – a great way to save money. In many remote parts of the world, living off the land correlates to longevity. Food in its heirloom ancient form is unrecognisable to many of our purposely bred next-gen varieties and those pumped with chemicals to increase shelf-life and aesthetic value. Thankfully, in many a home vege garden in New Zealand, it’s often taste before beauty. It is at the retail stores where we often have our aestheticappeal radars out. Carrots spring to mind in the funny deformity stakes – the Frankensteins of the vege world. The tangled multi-limbed vegetable has simply just struck a pebble or stick while growing, then branched out to save itself. Capsicums come a close second in hilarious, but harmless, renditions. Strawberries and tomatoes can split or fuse together or sprout extra ‘bits’. Share your comical food photos on Instagram, support farmers’ markets and ask for their more aesthetically challenged items, grow your own and shop for what’s on the inside – not the outside. There is in fact a fruit called Ugly Fruit, which interestingly has exotic-food status. This bulbous oddity is a hybridised Jamaican grapefruit, tangelo and orange mix. It might be a while until we see Master Chef: the ugly edition, or warty root vegetables in Michelin Star dishes – but watch this space.

A

lthough an unflattering title, ugly food is a new food group we can include in our shopping baskets. People are saving on pennies whilst simultaneously saving the world food-shortage and wastage problem. As a growing trend, with those like Jamie Oliver spreading the word, this is really just a reversal back to the good old days. In decades passed, a child’s image of an apple included a worm peeping out the side. Now it’s more likely the Apple logo. Cut out the codling moth, peel away the brown patch and pop that puny cast-off into the lunchbox. Take a large perfectly spherical Californian orange for instance and a local, small organic blemished one. Cut both into quarters and compare. It’s likely the later surpasses in intense juicy flavour. Every year reportedly 2.9 trillion pounds of food gets dumped, according the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations – ‘ugly food’ is a big part of the problem. The EU, until recently, imposed rules on the length, size and condition of what fruits and vegetables retailers could sell. Big is not necessarily beautiful, but the food industry has been conditioning our eyes over our taste buds. New Zealand produce, such as kiwifruit, sells overseas as voluptuous clones in a row – for an arguably brazen price-tag. The tasty small fuzzy ones left behind, can sell for a song. However, times ‘they are a changing’. It’s been a couple of years since Countdown introduced The Odd Bunch – asymmetrical avocados, odd-ball kumaras, hail-stone pocked stone fruit, or apples

athrooms are often south-side windowless rooms, so take a walk on the dark side and enhance the cosiness. Black fixtures are now a mainstay in most bathroom ranges. They create a feature out of the functional, such as matte black shower surrounds and tapware. And finger marks won’t show. Spa baths have lost popularity to the free-standing bath, which can be a focal feature in black. Add a black chandelier and candles to elevate to movie-star status. Monochromatic bathroom wallpapers look striking in geometrics, metallics or vintage prints. Black-tiling combined with black-painted walls is effective, particularly with 1920s-style pedestal basins. Black makes a statement around the edges in cornices, framing, mirrors and

shelving. A dark vanity in a corner stands out, where white would otherwise just blend. Black ceilings are inviting, especially if the room is small with a tall ceiling. And against black aluminium windows, a black and white theme is a classic. Marble blends magnificently against ebony surrounds – instant five-star luxury in white with grey marbling, or black with white marbling. Incorporate dark woods and wrought iron features. A New Year gives you the chance to really take stock, to review where you’ve been – I always do this with someone I trust implicitly – and then work out where you want to go. You can consider the challenges, the game-changers, the small wins and the larger victories. They will all be there and each of these will provide great insights as to what comes next. That’s where the resolutions come in … or, at least, they do for me. Statistically, the most common resolutions involve: weight loss (been there) and, let’s face it, who hasn’t? Eat healthier (another tick), exercise, read more, make more, save more, it’s always something more. Bill Gates once said, “most people overestimate what they can do in a year and underestimate what they can do in ten.” This year, personally and in business, I’m mindful of the word and nature of ‘less’.

Happy 2019! I’ve learnt that most people fit into one of two camps when it comes to acknowledging a New Year and the concept of setting New Year’s resolutions. They either embrace them and jump in with the zeal of someone slightly demented (I’m probably in that camp) or they side-line the opportunity, comfortable in the belief that the year will be what it will be and that no amount of forced change, good intent or actions can be carried out for 12 whole months on a wish alone. In fact, an American survey conducted in 2018 found that up to 32% of people don’t set any form of resolution at all, seeing little value in the process and no likelihood of an outcome. I’ve never been able to see things through the lens of ‘relax, breathe, then wait and see’, but I’m

As a company, it’s got us focused on some of the finer aspects of less. Less paper, less waste, less stress. Which means more community involvement and more mindfulness. I’m looking forward to it and I’m heartened by the fact all of us are aware of the need to be kinder to ourselves, our community and our planet. So those are some of my resolutions. I couldn’t go into 2019 without some of the old favourites as well (which I’ll keep to myself ) but I will finally give up on backing a trailer, or worse, the boat!! No amount of intention will change the fact that I’m terrible! Whatever school you subscribe to, all the best for 2019. It will be no surprise that the year will be whatever you expect it to be!

Add an arty, earthly, organic vibe to a room with fibre art. This is far from something new – but then that’s the beauty of it.

riginating as a craft in the ’60s, and common on walls by the ’70s, the fashion faded until recently. Now handmade, woven art style is recreating the fabric of our homes. With interior design focus toward natural woods and stoneware, this decor trend is a natural match. A hands-on craft involving manually knotting, twining, plaiting, coiling, pleating, lashing and interlacing, materials range from tough jute, rattan and rope to finer wool, cotton or silk. Although traditionally reserved for natural materials, acrylics also feature. Art can be hung by invisible fishing tackle, string and wooden rods, or framed on canvas, or boxed for structure. Fibre art is everywhere, especially in the bedroom. A macramé woven wall hanging

in lieu of a headboard is pure cosiness. There’s a softening natural effect of fibre art against a stark gibbed wall. Beading or fabric is sometimes woven into the mix. Incorporating seashells such as paua and using flax, is a Kiwi version of a dreamcatcher! Plants have now snuck back inside as oxygen-producing adornments and they’re now seen dangling from the rafters in creative macramé hangers. The textiles in fibre art can be beautiful, with raw, or natural dyes creating interesting aesthetics. A colourful ethnic tapestry above the mantle in the lounge is a refreshing change from framed art and a woven rug on the bathroom floor is a step up from the common acrylic bath math.

owever, as we increasingly seek spaces that bring a sense of comfort and safety, it seems the fourposter bed is making a contemporary comeback. Today’s iteration errs on the side of simplicity compared to its luxurious forebears, with modern heating rendering the traditional addition of drapery pointless, with the bedframe, canopy and all, often left exposed, or just sheer curtains draping down. he three innovative projects are among more than 32 projects which have received grants from Christchurch City Council’s Innovation and Sustainability Fund since it was set up in September 2017. “Christchurch is a city of opportunity and we want to be able to support the group and businesses in our community who have great ideas about how things can be done differently – and more sustainably,” says Cr Vicki Buck, who chairs the Council’s Innovation and Sustainability Committee.

“Through the Innovation and Sustainability Fund we have given out $860,000 worth of grants to a wide range of projects that are making a difference in our communities and in our environment.’’ Projects that have received funding include: City Harvest Food Rescue – A food rescue service that takes quality surplus food and redistributes it through agencies to families and individuals in need. O

ur city has become such a dynamic place to live, work and visit, with a real sense of excitement in the air. Our visitor economy remains the growth market for the city and region, with guest nights and visitor spending well surpassing pre-earthquake levels. This positive trend is likely to continue over the next few months, as our city plays host to events for locals and visitors alike. The Bread & Circus World Buskers Festival, which is just winding down, was even better than ever, with an amazing lineup of over 520 performances. There is the much-loved annual Sparks concert in February, as well as the Night Noodle Markets. I’m also looking forward to the Holi Festival and the South Island Lantern Festival – two family events that really showcase our region’s diversity and community spirit. The events calendar will be boosted by the staged re-opening of the Christchurch Town Hall – a key milestone in the regeneration of our city and a very welcome world-class venue. This will join other developments, such as the newly opened central city library Tūranga and entertainment complex EntX, in helping to bring thousands of visitors into the heart of the city. We are also heartened to see that earthworks have started on the Metro Sports Facility, site preparation works have begun on the Cathedral site, and they are making headway on the Riverside Farmers’ Market site, which is set to become an impressive complex with a focus on local produce. It’s a great to see our regenerated – and rejuvenated – city really taking shape.

A

s we head into our second year of office, it’s been great to be able to take some time over the summer break and reflect on a very busy 2018. There have been some significant changes to make sure that people are able to get their homes fixed and get on with their lives, and I have been thrilled to see some of the results that we’ve achieved. A big step was the Independent Ministerial Advisor’s report in June, which demonstrated the need for a wide range of reforms to speed up the resolution of outstanding EQC claims. It was clear there was a lot of work to do to get those claims moving but some critical changes were made to ensure faster resolution. As of the end of November 2018, there are only 2,337 EQC claims outstanding, with 72 percent of claims that were on hand at 30 June 2018 resolved. In addition, the launch of the Greater Christchurch Claims Resolution Service (GCCRS) in October was met with a great response and has made a difference for many people. This year is shaping up to be just as busy. The Canterbury Earthquakes Insurance Tribunal will be established and the inquiry into the EQC will provide an interim report back by the end of June, but our major focus for 2019 will continue to be ensuring that people are getting their claims resolved as quickly as possible and are able to move on with their lives.

t’s hard to believe that the xmas break is over and we are already well into the New Year. As a business owner, the start of a New Year is a good time to step back and to reflect on the past business year and set some goals for the year to come. It is easy, when we are busy, to fall into the trap of working in the business rather than working on the business. Having a break gives us the opportunity to step back from the business and to have a critical look at it. This year is shaping to be another busy one for Fraser Thomas Ltd. We moved into our new office late last year, which is much more suitable for our expanding workforce. We are working with some inspirational clients, who are challenging our engineering ingenuity and will ensure that we are exposed to some exciting engineering challenges this year. That being said, this year my goal is to try and make more time in my busy schedule, to ensure that I have more time for my wife and kids and also for myself. Success in business typically takes a lot of time and effort, but we also need to try and prioritise working on ourselves, in order to enable us to maintain our health and focus (which ultimately will help to improve our businesses).

or Ōtākaro, 2019 is going to be a year where we go up rather than out. Having opened the City Promenade, completed the bulk of the South Frame and finished almost all of our roading projects, we’re largely out of your way on the streets. So, you will be seeing activity ramp up on both the Te Pae and Metro Sports Facility sites. Te Pae is over a quarter of the way through construction and on track to start holding conventions and exhibitions from late 2020. The most obvious change you will see this year is the construction of the 3600m2 exhibition hall, to the south of the well-advanced auditorium. It effectively doubles the size of the building on the site. At the peak of construction, you will see more than 400 people working on Te Pae. Around May, the last of the 7000 or so in-ground stone columns will be installed on the Metro Sports Facility site between Moorhouse Ave and St Asaph St. This is one of the largest ground improvement projects of its kind in New Zealand and will help mitigate liquefaction risks or damage to pools and courts in any future earthquakes. We are working on reaching an agreement with a Main Works contractor that will see work on the building start when groundworks finish. These are large facilities that will have a positive impact for everyone, from kids learning to swim through to the operators of the South Island’s largest tourism ventures. It’s an exciting time to be watching the Christchurch skyline.

I

f you visited somewhere outside Christchurch during the holiday period and found several tower cranes and a number of mobile cranes operating in close proximity, it is likely that you considered it to be an area where there was a lot of investment and development happening. It is also likely that people from outside Christchurch who visited our city and saw just that, had a similar impression – the impact of which cannot be underestimated. Dynamic cities attract highly skilled people whose efforts have a ripple effect, creating new jobs and driving economic development. Christchurch is wellpositioned to accommodate stronger growth and must compete harder to attract a greater share. This year, Regenerate Christchurch is focussed on identifying and addressing impediments to regeneration in the short, medium and long term. This will build on our central city momentum work, which has already led to the development and implementation of the central city revitalisation action plan by both the public and private sectors. All cities have a constant need to regenerate in some shape or form. The fact that Christchurch’s regeneration phase follows a period of recovery means an ongoing long-term commitment will be essential. Progress can sometimes be obscured from view by familiarity and it is critical that we, as a community, acknowledge and celebrate it. However, there is still plenty to be done.

How great was it to see Christchurch humming with locals and visitors this holiday period?

Y

ou didn’t have to look far to see people out and about enjoying what the new-look city has to

offer. Thanks to some great weather, and multiple events and festivals, thousands and thousands of happy visitors – both

domestic and international – enjoyed the freedom to roam our inner-city. The Hagley Oval hosted the Black Caps’ match against Sri Lanka and the newly-revitalised World Buskers’ Festival attracted both young and old to its spectacular events. We’ve also been treated to some awesome concerts at Hagley Park, with the likes of Fat Freddy’s Drop, as well as ‘A Summer’s Day Live’, which featured international guests, Dragon, TOTO, and Jefferson Starship. What better way to spend a spectacular Canterbury day than with a concert and picnic in the park? Elsewhere, retailers and hospitality workers were kept happy – and very busy – with a welcome Christmas boost, thanks to late-night shopping, and bars, cafés and restaurants were open for business. Of course, the great weather helped, too. It’s also been interesting to see many of the new central city anchor projects starting to become a reality and it’s exciting to watch their progress. I really enjoyed exploring the city over the summer break and seeing so many smiles and families having fun. Well done to the council and all parties involved in presenting our inner-city to the world. Have you checked out your new backyard? If you have driven or walked along any of the main city routes and wondered what is in that shiny new building, you are not alone. Naming rights offers some indication, but more often than not, there are gems inside that may not be so obvious. For example, Grant Thornton House on Oxford Terrace is not only the striking new home of the global accounting giant, it also houses Amaterrace Teppanyaki Japanese Steak House and, on the street level, the newly opened (early Jan) Chiwahwah Mexican Cantina and Bar. Across the river is 93 Cambridge Terrace, a four-storey black-glass, nondescript building called Iwikau. Inside are Aurecon and EY. On the ground floor, West End Pharmacy, West End Expressmart, and West End Stories Café. But Iwikau’s surprise lies on the opposite side of the building, invisible from the busy thoroughfare. It is Ngā Mara a Te Wera, The Gardens of Te Wera. Te Wera was a Ngāi Tahu warrior chief and had a long association with the area that came also to be occupied by the King Edward Barracks. It is a beautiful, quiet, shared seating space that respects its deep Maori and European histories. You can read more about it on the storyboard in the garden.

Stylish and user friendly, as the city has come alive around it, it has become the central hub it was intended to be. As more retail outlets, cafes, restaurants, and nightlife venues open, and with some very high profile projects scheduled to open in the next few years, the already buzzing city is set to erupt! With so many changes, however, navigating the city can be tricky. If you venture into The Crossing – a “diverse yet intimate, one hectare precinct of heritage facades… enticing laneways and open public spaces” and, of course, shops, shops and more shops – be sure to take some breadcrumbs because getting lost is a real possibility. It is however, a pretty nice place to be lost in for a couple of hours. Plymouth Lane is a retail space, conveniently located under a multistorey parking building with a huge cycle lock-up area and individual lockers. At the river end of Cashel Street there are cafés and eateries, including a Black & White Coffee Cartel, a Metromart and The General Store, popular with tourists and locals, for gifts and homewares.

The Canterbury sequence also put a renewed community focus on earthquake engineering and the strengthening of structures.

he Building (Earthquake-prone Buildings) Amendment Act 2016 (EPBA) was introduced on 1 July 2017, coinciding with the updated New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering assessment guidelines. The EPBA provides leadership and

direction regarding risks to public safety posed by existing buildings, and brought major changes to the way earthquake-prone buildings are identified and managed under the Building Act. It also educates building owners and tenants about seismic performance and risk.


EARTHQUAKE STRENGTHENING OF BUILDINGS HISTORICALLY FOCUSED ON THE VISIBLE STRUCTURE

The past two years has seen growing awareness about the interaction between building structures and soil during an earthquake. While the EPBA and %NBS has created a growing market for earthquake strengthening, encompassing architects, engineers, builders and developers, earthquake strengthening of existing buildings has historically focused only on bracing or stiffening the visible structure, rather than modifying the ground or footings. The design methods typically considered include FRP wrapping, concrete jacketing, additional bracing or damping, selective weakening, base isolation, foundation widening or stiffening, piling, and ground improvement.

REMEDIATION SOLUTIONS Apart from ground improvement, the strengthening solutions are structural approaches that seek to either increase flexibility or strength, or decrease deformation and displacement of the building, without addressing the behaviour of the soil. For building owners seeking to achieve a higher %NBS, it is recommended to engage both geotechnical and structural engineers when considering the best approach. Photos from the 1964 Niigata earthquake, with buildings lying on their sides, demonstrated structures strong enough to withstand the impact of an earthquake on poor ground.

It is important to remember that much of the damage observed in Canterbury was due to poor performance of the ground rather than the strength of the buildings. Since the Canterbury earthquakes, ground improvement research trials have shown that resin injection can demonstrably improve the density and stiffness of earthquake affected ground and increase the resistance of soils to liquefaction. The full research report is now available on the New Zealand Geotechnical Society online library, and is included in MBIE Module 5: Ground Improvement of Soils Prone to Liquefaction.

NEW BUILDING STANDARD The EPBA categorises New Zealand into three seismic risk categories under the New Building Standard (NBS) and sets timeframes for building owners to identify and take action to strengthen or remove earthquake-prone buildings. The lowest performing structures (33 percent NBS or less) are deemed earthquake prone and will most likely be demolished. For intermediate risk (33 percent – 67 percent NBS), building owners are required to strengthen the building to meet 67 percent NBS. The challenge for building owners undertaking earthquake strengthening works to existing buildings is to consider both ground strength and building behaviour so that the most cost effective and long-lasting solution can be identified to improve the %NBS.

With the clock ticking on the council’s self-imposed deadline to end temporary chlorination, Water Supply Improvement Programme Manager Helen Beaumont provides an update on how the work is tracking.

A water conservation campaign has resulted in average water use well below summer averages. “If that keeps up we should be able to continue with the well remediation work as planned,” Helen says. Council is confident that seven of the nine city supply zones will be chlorine free by May this year, collectively providing more than 60 percent of the city’s water supply. However, even after doing this work, providing chlorine-free water to everyone in every part of the city remains a challenge. “We are also looking at how we can reduce the amount of chlorine in the water,” Helen says. At some pump stations, doses of chlorine have been able to be halved, with work ongoing to lower chlorine levels in other areas. “We all want the chlorine out of our water and we are working hard to ensure we can have an unchlorinated water supply as soon as possible.”

nspired by a New England ‘village-style’ concept, The Oaks Village features four mixed-use commercial buildings, for 10 tenancies. The existing earthquakedamaged property had two tenants, a pharmacy and a women’s gym, so the development was designed and built around them as they continued trading before moving the two businesses into stage 1. The 1830sqm complex features Cape Cod tiled roofing and weatherboard shiplap cladding to create the village-style effect, say Drew Murray and Alan Cowie of Design Team, an architectural,

commercial interiors and project management company, who worked with developers Roger Bridge Suburban Centres Ltd on the 10-month project. “With two street frontages, the buildings are wrapped around the various pedestrian entries into the complex, with an abundance of carparking spaces in between.” A restaurant and bar will also play an important role in the development, along with new tenants at The Oaks Village which include a bottle store, chemist, convenience store, an Indian restaurant Tandoori Flame and Domino’s Pizza.
