university lecturer once asked me and a group of my female peers how many of us were feminists. One hand of the 12 present went up. That was just seven years ago; 118 years after women got the vote, 92 years after women were allowed to stand for parliament and 78 years after the first woman was elected into parliament. Somewhere between the brave and radical women’s rights campaigners of the late 1800s and post 1980s, it seems to have become uncool to be a feminist. Feminism by definition is simply the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes. Yet, according to the World Economic Forum’s 2017 Gender Gap Report, gender parity is still more than 200 years away. Men and women are different. We have different biological abilities, different hormones and we look – for the most part – different. There are slightly more women in the world than men – 52 percent of the population are women. And yet, most of the positions of power are occupied by men. In quite a literal sense, men rule the world. This made sense 1000 years ago when physical strength was one of the key determinants of survival. But we live in a very different world now, one where creativity, intelligence and innovation are equal determinants of success. Earlier this month we celebrated International Women’s Day. It’s one day a year where we reflect on the economic, political and social achievements of women. And, while it may not be ‘cool’ to identify as a feminist, as my university lecturer pointed out that day, why wouldn’t you?

If you’ve long dreamed of singing Italian and sounding Italian, then Claudia Lues can help you realise your dream.

“I

think my love of music began in the crib,” says South African born Claudia. “My parents are Italian; my mother sang all the popular Italian songs, including opera and my maternal grandfather was a conductor, so music surrounded my entire life.” In response to the earthquakes, Claudia pitched the idea of Italian singing classes to the Canterbury Workers’ Educational Association (CWEA). “I felt the need to do my bit – to help traumatised people.”

The CWEA gave her a ‘test run’ to ascertain interest. “That was in 2014. I began with six students then it kept growing. Now I have 15…and I would love more!” Claudia says there’s no need to feel apprehensive about singing in a foreign language. “It doesn’t matter if you don’t speak Italian; the joy is in singing the words – that’s how you learn the language.” The song repertoire ranges from classics

to modern – “From Puccini to Bocelli, we do it all,” Claudia says. “My students say the class is the highlight of their week; they’ve grown to love the language so much, they’ve taken trips to Italy!” Claudia feels very fortunate to be doing what she loves most. “It’s who I am – a musical Italian. fashionable philanthropy For more than 10 years, Sue Bramwell has put her considerable entrepreneurial skills to work for Nurse Maude, partnering commercial enterprise with a charitable imperative. Metropol talks to the dedicated General Manager of Marketing about her love of philanthropy and her dedication to the vital service that has been caring for the community since 1896. You have enjoyed a decorated career in journalism, marketing, communications and writing books for children, what attracted you to Nurse Maude? My family will tell you I was very badly designed to provide care (I’m the sort of person who would wander off and read a book in the middle of changing an Elastoplast) but very well suited to find the money for that care to be provided by others. I have always believed that your right to exercise choice and retain independence shouldn’t disappear with age or illness and so does Nurse Maude. Making that work visible to others is a diverse, complex and interesting business. How challenging can the philanthropic environment be in terms of engaging support and how can people help more? Working with sponsors, individuals and businesses that really get what we do makes it a whole lot easier. It is because of them we can provide end of life care and support free of charge to our patients and their families. Whether people are donating money, clothing for our hospice shops, furniture, and household goods to Maudes on Trade Me, or sponsoring one of our fleet of little white cars…there’s a whole lot of ways to be part of

providing that care to those who need it most. We’ve been caring for the people of Canterbury for more than 120 years now, and we’re an integral part of the community. Thankfully, the community is also an integral part of Nurse Maude. What are some of the greatest joys in your role? As someone who is well known as being able to shop to Olympic standard, it has to be opening our seven hospice shops throughout Christchurch. Opening the first and the biggest in Merivale nearly 10 years ago was a heartstopping moment in terms of calculated risk but it has been incredibly successful from the day it first opened its doors. The skill, compassion, and sheer commitment the staff and volunteers of Nurse Maude put into their work is also a joy to behold. For many of those we care for we are often the only people they may talk to from week to week. We never forget that.

What would surprise people about Nurse Maude? Nurse Maude effectively started district nursing in New Zealand. She devoted her life to the poor and sick on the streets of Christchurch and was the driving force behind the registration of nurses. Her legacy is a large and diverse organisation providing nursing in our hospital, hospice and the community, homecare, specialist services such as home dialysis, wound care, school-based nursing and paediatric services as well as founding the New Zealand Institute of Community Health Care for research and development. I live in hope that one day the woman who saved the lives of generations of Cantabrians will join the bronze busts of the Canterbury Heroes outside the Arts Centre. What is the overarching philosophy of the organisation and how do the team live and breathe it? Alleviating suffering in our community. It’s not just about providing nursing and homecare, it’s about recognising that with age can come social isolation and profound loneliness. There’s a real sense of loss that comes with increasing

dependence on others and the belief of some that their life no longer holds purpose. Everyone needs to matter to someone and they matter to us. What exciting plans and events are on the horizon for Nurse Maude? The rebuilding of the Nurse Maude Hospital on McDougall Avenue, opening in September, would have to be one of the biggest in terms of size and financial commitment. Canterbury has the largest population aged over 75. In less than eight years the number of people aged 85 or more will have doubled. Many of the frail elderly cared for by Nurse Maude live in reduced circumstances with little or no family support and a bare minimum of income. The Nurse Maude Hospital is where they can live their final months in a safe and compassionate environment, where specialist palliative care is provided at no cost to them. If there’s one thing Nurse Maude does exceptionally well, it’s providing care that is often considered too hard, too complex and too expensive by other aged care facilities without imposing private charges.

Just when it seems the world is suffering a surfeit of doom and gloom stories, along comes a story big-hearted enough to illuminate the entire universe. Along comes Project EBC and four fabulous people – Mike Lowden, Bette Chen, Tina Morrell and Fergus Flannery.

roject EBC (Everest Base Camp) was born from the coming together of like-minded individuals whose passion and vision for Everest initiated a two-fold mission: to trek to Everest Base Camp (at an elevation of 5,364 metres) and to help a family from Khumjung Village rebuild their earthquake-damaged home. The home belongs to Tshering Thundu (Sandu), his wife, Tangii, and their four children. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake of April 25, 2015 wrought such havoc that Sandu – a porter and guide for more than 15 years who has summited Everest five times – and his family have had to camp under canvas ever since; not pleasant 16 March 15, 2018 Metropol

Transforming a 1980’s office block into a code-compliant, sophisticated hotel contains hidden complexities that the lay-person would struggle to comprehend. ogether with a total reconfiguration, the structure had to be strengthened with engineers incorporating carbon fibre wrapping. Robert says the original architects had rotated the stair and lift shafts by 45 degrees. “Creating viable rooms out of interesting shaped spaces was challenging!” Three lower levels are now conference rooms. Converting bars, restaurants and kitchens from car parks required a change to flat floors and working with lowered ceiling heights. One design challenge was concealing necessary additional services within the existing structure: there is a 50,000 litre water tank hidden beneath the café floor area to provide water in an emergency. Originally the carpark wings were visually incorporated with the main tower block, but facade removal and the incorporation of a crisp white cladding now delineates them from the central tower, bringing the tower into sharp relief. Robert has brought human scale at street level with the use of multi-faceted canopies. But Weir Architecture is also an awardwinning house designer too. Robert enjoys the challenges of residential and loves working with his clients. Many clients have built three houses with him over 30 years, as their life stages changed. His modern style is softened with colour and sophisticated detailing; creating spaces that flow seamlessly is a trademark.

FO GUANG YUANG GALLERY: Taiwanese artisan Huang Da An is currently on exhibition until April 8, 2018. Huang is a self-taught artist who has recreated the traditional woodfiring ceramic art through a decadelong of experimentation. His ceramics speak for themselves; each piece is a joy – a wonder of texture and colour. Not to be missed! Auckland artist Dean Buchanan’s works will be on display from April to mid-July. His oils, typically large in size, are colourful, vivid and dramatic, reflecting Dean’s passion and connection to his homeland. Rumour has it that if you’re looking for the painting to grace your home, it should be a Dean Buchanan.

CoCA TOI MOROKI: Peter Robinson’s solo exhibition Fieldwork in which delicate, sculptural forms (comprising wood, wire, paper, metals, magnets and nails) sprawl through CoCA’s galleries. The intricate scale of the materials also highlights the nature of CoCA’s ‘Christchurch Style’ Brutalist Architecture. The exhibition coincides with the building’s 50th anniversary this year. BRYCE GALLERY: Their first 2018 exhibition is ‘Nature Speak’, a celebration of our native flora and fauna from artists J. Stewart, Min Kim and Galina Kim. J. Stewart’s landscapes are mighty, magnificent works that draw the eye and hold your attention, while his C.F. Goldie inspired portraits are flawlessly executed. The subjects look into your very soul; their eyes speak of their stories, their history. Min Kim’s native tree and birdlife works are exquisite in detail and rendering. Min’s Kowhai, for example, is of the brightest, fieriest autumnal hues, while her New Zealand Falcon pays full tribute to these noble birds of prey. A collaboration between two North Canterbury wineries, a grape harvesting company and several other generous donors is producing wine with a difference and the couple behind the project-turned-wine-label are still reeling from its early success.

lanna and Pete Chapman initially started 27Seconds as a oneoff fundraiser for Hagar – an international NGO that helps survivors of modern-day slavery. “We wanted to help so we created delicious wine, where 100

percent of the profits go to survivors,” Alanna says. “It was only meant to be a one-off fundraiser. But as we sort of delved deeper, it snowballed into a company.” Terrace Edge, which is owned by

Greystone Wines, just up the road from Terrace Edge, did the winemaking, with various others jumping on board to help. Alanna was working in Hagar’s Christchurch office when she learned that every 27 seconds a person is trafficked into slavery and, while in India, walking through the alleyways of Sonagachi in Calcutta, the country’s largest red-light district, she and Pete witnessed it first-hand. Alanna and Pete, a viticulturist who works on the family vineyard, realised wine was one way they could help. “We love the idea that something accessible, like wine, can be used for good. It empowers people to make a difference through just a single choice.” Alanna says the combined generosity of the wine community meant 27Seconds was able to give away $10 from every $17-$23 bottle in the first run of wine. Greystone Wines provided heavily discounted winemaking, Kiwi bottle supplier O-I halved its prices, another company provided free caps and local designer Piet van Leeuwen of Port Edison did the labels pro bono. “We love our labels. We’re super proud of them. Piet wanted to portray the name itself so that’s why there are 27 dots on the front and there are three dots that you can’t see as well. The idea behind that is once someone has been sold it is sort of like an ending,” Alanna says. “It’s a really morbid topic but there is hope as well. There are things that can be put in place that reduce trafficking. We wanted it to be a hopeful brand as well so that’s why the colours are quite bright.” 27Seconds’ Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Rosé are available online and there are plans to start selling wholesale to local restaurants. Three bottles of 27Seconds wine can provide a young survivor with a school uniform, shoes and stationery for a year, five can provide a bike to get to school and seven bottles every month can put a survivor through university. The NZ Herald described a third performance of Der Freischütz as “one of the most beautiful compositions in the repertoire of operatic music, too well known to require any detailed statement of the plot”. It is hard to believe that a work that was so loved and admired in early New Zealand is now unknown. The duo claims that there’s a congestion toll coming that will send shares skyrocketing… If, in fact, there are any shares at all. Featuring Roy Snow, Luanne Gordon, Lynda Milligan, Bruce Phillips, Geoffrey Heath, Jared Corbin, Gregory Cooper, Susannah Kenton, Melinda Joe and Albany Peseta, director Ross Gumbley has assembled a dream cast. “I’ve got a cast who are wonderful actors and packed with funny bones.” Will Trudi & Stephen’s neighbours fall for it? Founded in 2012, NFFD is now one of the most anticipated writing competitions in New Zealand. The 2018 round is open until 30 April and, as New Zealand’s celebration of the shortest form of fiction writing, winners are announced on the shortest day of the year – 22 June. This year’s judges are acclaimed short story writers, novelists and poets Tracey Slaughter and Sue Wootton. Last year, NFFD launched the Youth Category, and this year sees Patrick and poet/writer Tim Jones as judges in this space. NFFD 2018 introduces a te reo Māori prize in both youth and adult categories, judged by poet/ novelist and short story writer Vaughan Rapatahana. This year, the fourth annual Micro Madness series will also run, with 22 micros selected for inclusion, and three winners will be selected from the 22 finalists. If you’ve ever been to a Showbiz Christchurch performance and been blown away by the onstage performance, you’re seeing just a small fraction of the local talent that culminates in an end product of this calibre.

he 80-year-old community theatrical society stages three productions each year. The Saunders & Co 2018 season commences at the Isaac Theatre Royal with Wicked from 6-21 April; followed by Broadway Hitmen, a concert of Cole Porter and Andrew Lloyd Webber hits, from 13-15 July; and is completed by Les Misérables opening on 14 September. Up to 100 people can be involved behind the scenes in just one show, volunteers who put hundreds of unpaid hours into their roles. In Wicked’s on stage performance, you will see two leads (played by four actors on alternate nights), six principal roles, 16 ensemble cast and 15 dancers, with 16 backing vocalists and 18 orchestral performers in the pit. Backstage however, 100 equally important parts make it all come together.

Vicki Morris-Williamson has been volunteering for Showbiz Christchurch for 19 years and is part of a team responsible for ensuring hats and costumes are made show ready and fit the brief of Director Stephen Robertson. Successful Broadway shows like Wicked, complete national and international tours before the rights to stage them are given to community theatre groups. Showbiz Christchurch is the first in New Zealand to get these rights to stage Wicked. “The Showbiz Christchurch performance is a whole new production,” Vicki says. “Stephen creates the best shows he can and is completely invested in bringing something special to the stage. We then start with the bones of the costumes, adding and improving everything, making it our own unique show.” Vicki is currently living in a sea of green, as she works diligently to overhaul hats that came from an international production and create new ones for the Emerald City townsfolk in Wicked. Just about every member of the cast is on stage for this scene and every costume has a hat. That’s 35 hats, each representing Vicki’s work to realise Stephen’s vision for it. Vicki wears many hats herself in the months that go into each performance. She is involved in costuming, pre-setting (planning set positioning), pack in (putting props up in the theatre), then the intheatre rehearsals, before the run of shows. “I warn my hubby heading into show season, that he won’t see me for three months,” she laughs. But working around a full-time job, it’s not an exaggeration. It’s a family affair for her though. Vicki’s son James (then 12) joined her in her first production, playing Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Her daughter Jenna – a professional dancer from the New Zealand School of Dance – made her Showbiz Christchurch debut at 19 and will be performing in Wicked when it starts next month. uilt in 1934 and leased from the Sydney Tramway Museum, Tram 1888 started life at the Fort Macquarie Depot – now the location of the Sydney Opera House. It was used on the city’s Watson’s Bay line until the Fort Macquarie Depot closed in 1955 and even received air raid precaution modifications to minimise window damage during World War II. From 1955 to 1960, the tram was shuffled around Sydney depots until the body was written off and sold to a tobacco farmer in New South Wales, where it accommodated seasonal farm hands for 24 years until 1984, when the farmer donated the battered tram body to a local council interested in its preservation. The restoration involved removing hundreds of nails that had been hammered into the inside of the body for coat hooks, lantern holders and clotheslines. The tram was furnished with original R-class seats before being put on display in Bondi Junction for five years. In 1993, it entered storage before the Sydney Tramway Museum took responsibility for it in 2000. The museum shipped Tram 1888 to Bendigo, where it was restored to an operational level. In subsequent years, it was put on display in Melbourne, repainted and used on a tour around Melbourne’s tram system. In 2009, Tram 1888 was leased to Auckland’s Museum of Transport and Technology, before being leased to Christchurch Attractions late last year.

Then there’s the bold – Kristen Stewart School of Special Effects (KSFX). The only school of its kind in New Zealand, KSFX offers fast-paced courses in techniques

Kristen says they will soon be offering more specialist short courses, in areas such as airbrushing and hair styling. “We have a photography studio and hair basins here, so the new facility will enable a much greater range of options.”

t’s not enough to just sell a makeup anymore – makeup needs to be good for the skin, outperform pharmacy and retail brands for wear and pigment density and, really importantly, consumers are becoming far more socially responsible – makeup now needs to be cruelty free.” Two years ago, frustrated by trying to find a brand to stock in her own successful Christchurch clinic Making Faces, Pip decided to create her own collection. The brand Lauren & Louise was titled over a glass of wine using Pip’s middle name – Lauren – and her collaborator and makeup artist Tammy’s middle name – Louise. It took two years to finalise the collection, which is sourced predominantly from New York and Australia. “We tried hundreds of formulations from multiple high-end cosmetics manufacturers around the world and we couldn’t be happier with the final collection – our stockists’ feedback has been fantastic.” Other than the manufacturing, Pip has been dedicated to sourcing New Zealand suppliers wherever possible. “I love that some of our suppliers are literally two minutes away. During the development stage I felt like I was seeing our packaging and branding experts every other day. The team at Pakworld did an amazing job, as did Spectrum Print and Riana Bennett from Ree Design, who also helped with our entire marketing image and print material. Another award-winning Christchurch business we worked with was Mint Design – they were integral in helping us with our online presence. We are asking New Zealand hair and beauty salons to support local, so it’s important we are walking the walk too.” The new season’s 37 eyeshadow and pigment pots launching this month also tell a story and personalise the journey of the brand. AN ORTHODONTIC REVOLUTION “Online ‘dental monitoring’ will completely change the delivery of orthodontic care,” says Ronald Sluiter of OrthodontiX.

In his opinion, the sophisticated software will become essential for busy people, or for those who live a distance from their clinic. While a standard two year plus on aligner treatment requires about 25 visits to the orthodontist, dental monitoring can cut those trips down to just 12 or 13. Currently suited to Invisalign aligners, the technology will be available for use on all the aligning tools. The programme enables a patient to take weekly photographs of their teeth, with and without aligners, using their smartphone, then Ronald receives

that scan for analysis at the clinic. A patient from the West Coast is using the technology. “I haven’t seen her in eight weeks, but I have seen her progress every week!” The app notifies Ronald if the client forgets to take a picture, it checks that the attachments are still in place, that the movement is happening correctly, and identifies when a patient should move to the next aligner. It costs extra, but Ronald says the benefits far outweigh the cost, reducing logistics and decreasing treatment time because of optimised aligner change. Aligners fit better, making treatment more discrete, patients receive instant feedback and more intensive care through weekly analysis, plus people love to see evidence of how their smile is changing.

Metropol talks to Juliette about her sartorial inspirations and her latest collection. Can you tell us how your career began? Mum taught me to sew from a very early age, but I never had aspirations to be a fashion designer. I studied Textiles at Massey University in Wellington and went on to win the Dare to Be competition to study at Parson’s School of Design in New York. This time really shaped who I was as a designer and it was only then that I decided I was going to come back to New Zealand to start my own label.

The fashion industry has been said to not take any prisoners, why do you think you’ve been such a success? Perseverance and clarity. I have had always had a very clear idea of my design sense and clarity about where I’ve wanted to go. How do you create designs which resonate so strongly with New Zealand women? Opening stores has given me amazing insight into what women want to wear. I have always been a selfish designer however, having direct contact with the wonderful people who engage with my brand gives me invaluable insight. I am in business to make women feel good about themselves. Who are some of your biggest fashion inspirations? I can never succinctly answer this question as I don’t look to celebrities or other designers for inspiration. Inspiration comes from more abstract places for me such as beautiful open landscapes, subtle movement in a silk or dappled shadow formations. What’s the most fulfilling part of what you do? Seeing women in my designs, working with my amazing team and getting to do what I love every day. What are some of the new looks and styles which we can expect to see coming through in the coming seasons? AW18 Undertone is such a beautiful rich collection and my stand out piece is the Surround Coat in Talc; it completely envelopes without overwhelming you. I also love the rich merlot and deep reds that run through the collection.

ocused on transitional science, to identify a very clear nexus between what’s being done in the field of research and the outcome for the patient, the real ethos of the foundation is around legacy – what it can do to make a better life for future generations and in turn, ensure less suffering for people with chronic illness and their families. While trying to reduce the bureaucracy that frustrates so many in the field, the foundation’s assessment process for its research is no less rigorous than any other. “The key is that we are not just some faceless funding agency; we develop a meaningful relationship with those we support,” CEO Kate Russell says. “With the likes of the Universities of Canterbury and Otago, we feel a great deal of responsibility, friendship and goodwill towards them, because they are doing a brilliant job.” An important part of Canterbury Medical Research Foundation’s remit focuses on health issues important to New Zealanders and those with a local relevance to Christchurch such as depression and anxiety, particularly post-quakes. “We also support the ADHD work of Dr Julia Rucklidge at University of Canterbury, Prof Frank Frizzell and his team working on colorectal research and so many others. The work of our own NZ Brain Research Institute is an important part of what we do. “The Brain ‘Centre of Research Excellence’ (CoRE) that our institute participates in, has been given a very clear focus – to push the beginnings of cognitive decline out by five years. Most people, if they live long enough, will experience some level of cognitive decline, so if we can delay this, it affects the whole trajectory of the disease.” One of the main reasons it exists is to fill a very important gap.

“We are niche funders who commit to small and interesting projects to help them become large and interesting projects. “The reason Professor Don Bevan started our foundation is because we have a huge hospital base here, a medical school and the University of Canterbury. We have a lot of lovely, young, bright minds fresh out of study with their PhD, and if they are not supported or given opportunities, they go overseas and we risk permanently losing that intellectual capital.” With $1.6 million given away annually by Canterbury Medical Research Foundation and a goal to give away $2 million annually by 2020, Russell says the foundation wishes to sincerely thank all its generous donors. “We have been so blessed in the generous bequests received. A lot of people think, ‘I don’t donate because surely they are only interested in big donors’, but actually, it is our hundreds and hundreds of small donors who give us what they can that helps us push our reserves up. There are a lot of worthy charities in New Zealand and we’re so thankful because the only reason we can do all of this is because of our generous community.” Tomorrow – 16 March – Canterbury Medical Research Foundation is partnering with the Cancer Society for its annual Russley Golf Club Tournament. ut if silver linings can come in ship-sized packages, this could well be one, with the ship’s demise spawning a historical account of the Kaiapoi Port. Developed soon after Kaiapoi was established in the 1850s, the Port of Kaiapoi became one of the busiest coastal ports in the country, but its 175-year history was at risk of being lost. When the ship met its untimely end, the MV Tuhoe Kaiapoi Trust took up the challenge of preserving its history. Rebranding itself as the Kaiapoi Maritime Heritage Trust, it set about commissioning a book to detail the port’s colourful past. “We wanted to do something to recognise the history of the port and the boats that sailed in and out of it for all those

years,” explains trust member Andrew Blackwell. Writer Colin Amodeo and trust member Paul Croucher captured the changing fortunes of the port that was once the centre of commerce for North Canterbury in Taking the bar – A history of Kaiapoi Port. It was a labour of love for Colin, a maritime historian with ancestors who have been seamen. “It is the kind of book which will appeal to ship lovers elsewhere and not just to Kaiapoi residents. I absolutely love my job and feel lucky to be surrounded by passionate people. Currently my

manager and her manager are both female, so I feel lucky to have some great role models to look up to. I would love to see even more women going into careers in technology. While the obvious path is continuing to study STEM subjects through school and university, it’s also great to realise that it’s never too late to give it a go. I’m a passionate member of our ‘WomANZ’ committee (our Australia and NZ women’s employee group). One of the projects is determining how we can use our skills and experience to encourage more young women into tech careers.

What does a day in your life look like? There’s no typical day leading the Uber Eats NZ business, and it’s one of the things I love most about my role. I’d say my role is a 50/50 mix of people management and business strategy – but every day looks different! I might start the day with a check-in meeting with my team, discussing our key business metrics and diving into any issues or project details. In the afternoon, you might find me on a call with a colleague in Brisbane talking about our virtual restaurant initiatives (where restaurants can run new brands out of one kitchen), a meeting with one of our large restaurant partners, then in a call with one of our product team in Singapore discussing the rollout of one of our new app features. And of course, finding some time for emails! It takes a lot to stay on top of all the exciting things happening with Uber, so connecting with my colleagues around the world is a must.

he humble chickpea is packed full of goodness and when roasted makes a tasty snack to munch on while enjoying a beer, or as a healthy lunchbox treat. Ingredients • 2 cans chickpeas • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon salt • 2 to 4 teaspoons spices or finely chopped fresh herbs, like chili powder, curry powder, garam masala, cumin, sweet or smoked paprika, rosemary, thyme, or other favourite spices and herbs Method • Pre-heat oven to 210C • Strain and rinse chickpeas. Dry the chickpeas well. Lay them on a clean dish towel or paper towels and pat them until they are matte and dry. Remove any loose skins that come off while drying. • Spread them in an even layer on a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Mix well so they are evenly coated. Don’t add the spices now, add them when fresh from

the oven, or they may burn. • Roast 20-30 minutes, shaking the pan every 10 minutes. The chickpeas are done when golden and slightly darkened, dry and crispy on the outside, and soft in the middle. • Sprinkle your choice of spices over the chickpeas and mix well to coat evenly. Serve while still warm and crispy or cool and enjoy in salads or as a lunch box snack.

A fine green tea powder, matcha has been produced in Japan for centuries, with Buddhist monks using it to help them stay calm and alert during meditation. Despite this illustrious past, matcha has only really hit the fore of western conscience in more recent years, where it has struck a culinary chord with the wellbeing crowd. Its vivid green colour comes from the high levels of chlorophyll produced by growing the tea leaves in the shade, a method that also boosts its inherent antioxidants. While matcha can be purchased in its raw form in health shops, it’s increasingly making an appearance in cafés, bakeries and even restaurants inside a daring range of baking, smoothies, desserts and plenty of other cooked creations – even burger buns! he busiest time is from September onwards, with people wanting their pool in by Christmas,” she says. “Pools can be put in all year round. Winter installs are very popular and allow for a norush, stress free time.” While the actual installation of a pool only takes four to five days, there are a number of other things to consider and plan. Julie and husband Warren are the owners of Lagoon Pools. Customer Satisfaction How do you rate?

As a businessperson, you’re always acutely aware of what’s required to maintain your personal and professional reputation, in addition to maintaining the goodwill of the public and your clients. Falling short on the delivery of what you promised is unacceptable, but it can nonetheless happen despite the best of intentions. It’s always confronting when you deal with a client’s disappointment and, with the power of social media, it’s important that you listen, learn and help – before matters get out of hand. Social media has an enormous ability to highlight issues, often whilst reducing a situation to only one (aggrieved) perspective. But nothing is ever that simple. In real estate, for instance, owners, purchasers, agents (whether listing or selling) and the companies they work for all have a stake in the outcome and a role in the proceedings which adds layers of potential misunderstanding. Recently, I found myself sitting with a family who had purchased a home. Their relationship with their sales consultant was extremely

positive, but they were disappointed at some of the actions taken by the vendor of the home they had purchased. Unfortunately, on settlement, the home was no longer in pristine condition. It wasn’t clean or tidy, gardens were overgrown and fixtures had been removed, leaving unsightly holes in the walls. The ‘dream home’ dream was being shattered, and they wanted to talk to someone about their feelings. With care and resourcefulness, all the problems were able to be addressed, but it made me think about how easily you can lose a valued client. Dealing with issues openly and promptly is always ideal, and usually results in the best outcome, but there are several alternative responses I have noticed – and personally been on the receiving end of – when it comes to client dissatisfaction.

e derive comfort from attempting to qualify or quantify certain facts, particularly when it relates to aspects which are beyond one’s immediate control. The ‘long tail’ of the regional rebuild being one such, rather significant, example. What was, in its ‘recovery’ stages, a test of our innate fight or flight responses, has now in an official capacity given way to the ‘rebuild’ phase, a phase one could easily argue required more stamina, both personally and professionally, as we waited with baited breath for the new places and spaces to come to fruition. Yet the metamorphosis now visible at street level is palpable, as our architects reimagine a cosmopolitan city that is perhaps shorter on stature, but certainly not on personality. Christchurch is full of creative, ambitious businesses, developers and architects who are making their own mark on the rebuilding city, with a developing physical typology that is nothing short of distinct. And yet, at the same time, it’s not a complete architectural about-face, as those responsible for this metamorphosis work hard to marry our built heritage with contemporary creations, offering an exemplary model of what is possible when ingenuity and innovation are the motivating drivers. As our new building facades play with clever new angles, colours and materials, our heritage icons make features of their ornate and rather elaborate detailing, with historic identities such as Stranges Lane and the Isaac Theatre Royal rubbing architectural shoulders with the likes of The Terraces and the Deloitte building. Each and every one of these distinct developments has its own story and yet each plays an equally important role in telling the new story of Christchurch.

t’s not often that you get involved in a construction project where the aim is to keep almost everything the same, but after 13 months of work the fully restored Victoria Square was reopened to the public this month. No major work had been carried out on Victoria Square since the 1980s, so time and the earthquakes had taken a bit of a toll, with cracked pavers and ponding proving hazardous. A significant 40,000 man-hours, 2100 metres of cabling, 800 metres of pipe and 170,000 pavers later, the space has been returned to its former glory, with wider paths and additional lighting making Victoria Square more accessible. Australasia’s first illuminated electric fountain, the 87-year-old Bowker Fountain, is also back to its colourful best, with new pumps and lights. Additional features like the brass and concrete Kanakana table recognise the site and the city’s bi-cultural heritage. All this effort went into Victoria Square because it is somewhat of a central city linchpin. It sits along the river promenade that’s currently under construction, its neighbours are the Performing Arts Precinct and the Town Hall and people using the Convention Centre’s meeting rooms will be gazing out onto Victoria Square every time their eyes wander. This restoration ensures the best of Christchurch is on show for anyone in the central city. So, on a sunny day, why not come grab a Vanilla Ice, take a seat by the Bowker Fountain and reacquaint yourself with this restored space.

ew Zealand was recently named as the most prosperous country in the world by The Legatum Institute. The London based think tank has recently released its annual global Prosperity Index for 2018, a huge survey that ranks the most prosperous nations. New Zealand now outranks Finland – a country we are often highlighted as performing poorly against. Since the index was first founded in 2007, our lowest place was fourth and we have taken out the top spot seven times. Given recent newspaper headlines outlining our childhood poverty statistics, the housing crisis and rivers we can’t swim in, this came as a surprise to me. So, I did a little more research and thinking on this topic. The Legatum Institute doesn’t view prosperity as being just the amount of money that a country has. It compared 104 variables in developing the rankings, including personal freedom, natural environment and social capital. Further reading of their website provides more detail. It’s well worth a look – just visit https://ind.pn/2Ex2S0j. When reviewing these results, it seems to me that all of us have a role to play to ensure that our collective prosperity is spread more evenly. We are doing ok, but we can do better. Smart central government policy and investment are obviously key, but these wheels take time to turn. In contrast, a nimble, grassroots-engaged, factbased charity or social enterprise can make an impact quickly, if it is well supported.

hristchurch’s rebuild is an opportunity to transform our city and leave a legacy for future generations, something which requires public and private organisations to partner together. Exploring these new ways of working together has long-lasting, farreaching benefits for all of us. I’m really pleased that Regenerate Christchurch has now signed agreements with both the University of Canterbury and Lincoln University. These will enable new and innovative opportunities for research, teaching and learning, particularly around the environmental and social regeneration, and ecology of the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor Regeneration Area – the former red zone. We’ll share resources and knowledge, and collaborate with two of New Zealand’s most recognised universities to create new learning experiences for local and international students, communities and visitors. We’d like to establish a world-leading living laboratory, where we learn, experiment and research; testing and creating new ideas and ways of living. It’s also an opportunity to demonstrate how to adapt to the challenges and opportunities presented by natural hazards, climate change and a river’s floodplain. Long-term, we want to see Christchurch recognised as a leader in developing technology for communities to adapt to climate change, and see an increase in science and technology-based jobs in our city. These partnerships between Regenerate Christchurch and tertiary providers will provide opportunities for staff and students, such as trialling ideas and projects that could also lead to commercial opportunities, involvement in internships, community engagement, research, and investigating the long-term impact of regeneration.

ccording to the 2017 report ‘Future demand for construction workers’, released by the MBIE, construction investment growth is set to peak in 2020 and increase the requirements for construction-related occupations until at least late 2022. This means employers are facing an increasing skills shortage and having to alter the ways they recruit and retain the best staff. Businesses within commercial or residential construction now have the opportunity to grow. The issue stopping them is being able to get the right staff members to take on those projects and deliver quality work. There’s no area where there’s an abundance of staff, from labour to carpenters to subcontractors such as plumbers or electricians, right through to site-based staff like site managers and supervisors, quantity surveyors, project managers and site engineers. Every single area of every project is very difficult to recruit, making it hard for people to fill up their business with top-notch people. We do look to Australia, which is obviously fairly close by and has a similar way of building, but we do a lot of work with attracting people from South Africa and the UK as well, and we have also sourced candidates from the US. Retention is probably one of the biggest focuses any [construction] employer has at the moment. People are moving much more frequently than they have done in the past and that’s because it’s so competitive a lot of employers are looking to attract people from other businesses who are already trained in a similar method of construction.

ne of the biggest remaining challenge of our rebuild is the ongoing mental health impacts of the earthquakes – especially for our kids. As well as the initial trauma, there have also been the years of slow grinding recovery, which has been especially hard for the people still stuck in broken homes and battling EQC or their insurance companies. That is why there has been a 93 percent increase in demand for mental health services for young people in Canterbury since 2011. This is something that our Government is committed to taking action on. It is why Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced we will give every child in Canterbury and Kaikoura access to a mental health professional through their school. We will spend $28 million hiring a range of mental health professionals from counsellors to psychiatrists to work alongside schools and teachers to help our local kids get the support they deserve. The roll out will start in the east of Christchurch and Hornby and will be completed by mid-next year. This policy has been designed alongside experts at the CDHB. They have been some of the unsung heroes of the recovery, providing mental health for people who need it most. By working in partnership with local experts, we have been better able to understand the needs of Canterbury kids, and have come up with a plan that I believe will make a huge difference for our young people.

ne of so many wonderful new builds in the city, the very public yet very personally passionate, process of bringing The Terrace to life gives it a talismanic feel, symbolising the strength and confidence, leadership and faith it has taken to get to this point.

Forged in the fire of Antony Gough’s vision, The Terrace, a glamourous and aesthetically pleasing precinct featuring innovative, thoughtful design, has brought this city section to life again, with twenty different hospitality environments open with minimum hours of 11am – 11 pm seven days, plus commercial space. It wouldn’t be out of line to describe Antony Gough as the King of the rebuild. We talk to Antony about his milestone. The Terrace has been a labour of love for you, how does it feel to have all that hard work and dedication now coming to fruition with the new bars now starting to open? A huge relief and very exciting seeing it all come together. How do you think the overall rebuild is going? The private sector is going very well, though it has taken longer than any of us would have expected. The Anchor Projects however need to get a hurry along. What are some of your favourite buildings or developments – both old and new? The Terraces – particularly the wooden building – The Arts Centre, Deloitte

House, The Crossing with its variety, Stranges Lane and the Bus Exchange. What do you see as some of the challenges facing the city as we move forward? I worry that all the cycle lanes may make travel by cars, trucks and buses too difficult. The Anchor Projects and the CBD housing are progressing too slowly. What do you think we’ve done well at as a city throughout the rebuild process? The Avon River precinct and Earthquake Memorial are excellent! Getting our sewerage and water systems back to normal as well. What do you love about Christchurch and, as a developer, what makes you choose to stay here? Christchurch is a city of huge opportunities. A brand new CBD surrounded by an exciting housing population, it is now getting a real sense of vibrancy. What does the rest of 2018 have in store for you? I have a car parking building to build and then I need to bed down The Terrace Precinct. This won’t happen by accident, it needs lots of planning and hard work behind the scenes.

Its portfolio includes a rubber mouldings factory which is now a coffee shop and roastery (The Anchorage) and a grocery distribution centre turned bar and eatery (Welles Street). The company is also repurposing six former industrial buildings in Welles Street. The complex, which will be home to a mix of artisan businesses, is named The Welder after another long-standing tenant. Stringer says buildings from the 1950s and 1960s are just as important to Christchurch’s history as those marked with the heritage stamp. “The easy option is to bulldoze them and start again, but as the city grows and fills in we’ll just never get an opportunity to get these kinds of buildings back. They are actually going to be our future heritage buildings – as crazy as it sounds. They will be very iconic amongst the sea of glass.” The Anchorage, Welles Street, Supreme Supreme and The Welder are all part of an area of town Box 112 has branded ‘South Town’, “an area of the city that has always had more grit and intrigue to it,” Stringer says. Box 112 is also developing Christchurch’s five-storey former Public Trust Building, which has been awarded a $1.9m heritage grant from the Christchurch City Council. “We are always looking to partner with interesting local and national businesses that are looking for an authentic and unique space to leverage off.”

he company, which buys, fits out and leases buildings in Christchurch, is all about tackling the city’s ‘too hard basket’ when it comes to development, says partner James Stringer. “Buildings are not just spaces, they have memories attached to them.” Stringer joined Box 112 in 2016 after his colleagues Sam Rofe and Rob Farrell set it up a year prior. As a director of the Christchurch Heritage Trust, he was excited to steer away from new builds and tackle projects others might overlook. “When you go overseas to any major city, you’ll often find the real soul of the city is always a few streets back – it’s the places the tourists hunt out, it’s the places the locals go. “We can’t go down the road of a utopian city, we have to remember that grit and intrigue is what makes a city. Pockets, things for everyone.” Stringer says he, Rofe and Farrell look at some of Christchurch’s less-thandesirable buildings, including those historically used for industrial purposes. “We hunt buildings that are really well located and have a story. Some of them are pretty tricky, they’re often tied up in insurance disputes. We really admire people who have held on to them for so long,” he says. Box 112 finds investors for each development and co-owns the buildings.

he fires, which broke out in February 2017, burned 1600 hectares of land on the Port Hills, claimed the life of firefighter Steve Askin, destroyed eleven homes and tore through the Christchurch Adventure Park, forcing its closure after just eight weeks of being open. Christchurch Adventure Park General Manager, Anne Newman, says at lot of hard work has gone into getting the park up and running again. “For those staff who were working at the park on that day it was obviously a stressful and traumatic experience to go through. Many staff then lost their jobs following the fires and, for those who did remain, it was ten months of incredibly hard work to get things prepared for a re-opening.” Sales and Marketing Manager, Sheena Crawford, says the facilities continue to grow. “We have recently re-opened two more of our trails, so in a biking sense we are getting closer and closer to our former capacity and are aiming to quickly grow beyond that. We have had over 40,000 people through the park in the first two months; 30,000 of those going up the chair and over a thousand enjoying the ziplines. “There is no doubt that there are still challenges for us to overcome as we continue to recover, but we are stoked to be back in business and seeing so many people out enjoying what the park has to offer again.”

Christchurch is now home to New Zealand’s first fully battery-powered electric car sharing scheme. Developed by Christchurch City Council and run by Yoogo Share, the scheme lets people hire electric vehicles at different points in the city.

“This is an exciting new transport service powered by electricity that is largely generated from renewable energy,” says CCC Resource Efficiency Manager Kevin Crutchley, who was Project Manager for the scheme. “The result is a service with zero tail pipe emissions that will both reduce our city’s greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, which will have positive health benefits for the residents of Christchurch.” Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel says she is proud that Christchurch is the first city in New Zealand, and one of the few cities internationally, that has such a service. “It’s a smart and sustainable way for businesses and for local residents to get around town and I’m excited to see the service grow. [It] will deliver improved environmental and health outcomes and help the Council achieve its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.”

The contrasting dark cedar shows the best of both products in a fantastic combination. We enjoy working closely with Mike Greer Homes. Their front-line communication is of a very high standard. Their design team and project managers have a wealth of knowledge to ensure a high standard of work is undertaken and met for their clients, meaning our products end up showcased beautifully. We review all details on projects collectively to ensure expectations are exceeded.” The tile supply for both showhomes was done by Garey Burgess of Giovanni Tiles, who works closely with the Mike Greer Homes inhouse colour consultant Haley Cleine. They discuss trends and designs while having a play with new products to see what will work best for each project. “Haley sees the bigger picture, so once she is happy with the concept I work to her vision and provide solutions, sourcing products especially,” Garey says. “I travel internationally personally selecting tiles. Because Mike Greer Homes is my biggest customer I keep them in mind when sourcing product and immediately introduce Haley to the new top of the range tiles that I know work well with their customer base. We have a reciprocal loyalty and I know the entire team. Both companies receive great benefits from our long-term relationship.” Dyers Road ITM supplied the building products and worked with the design team on both projects to ensure they met council criteria and the design briefs. “Our close working relationship with Mike Greer Homes means we are involved in the design process, which in turn leads

The high-spec kitchen and walk in pantry in number 19 is courtesy of Misco Joinery, which supplied Hafele European hardware with soft close drawers and powder coated handles. “The cabinetry has lasered edges which removes the glue line and makes them very smooth and ultra-watertight,” Penny Abell of Misco Joinery says. “This is a standard measure for all cabinetry we supply to Mike Greer Homes.” A launch party for the Mike Greer Homes sales team and project managers was held at number 19 to introduce them to the new line products from Misco, Hafele Hardware and Grass Componentry Range – such is the depth of knowledge Mike Greer Homes likes the team to have. Penny’s favourite part of the kitchen? “The size of the benchtop – all that entertainment space, people seem to be going for larger benchtops more and more,” she says. The project was just the type of large undertaking that this construction company thrives on with its logistical challenges and strong architectural vision. The four-storey building comprises 2,000 square metres of commercial and retail space, topped off by a loft style apartment and balcony. A hanging garden in the front of the building is a stand out feature of the project, bringing greenery to the modern façade. “The building certainly makes a dynamic feature on the Cashel Mall streetscape with its stunning seventeen metre glazed frontage to the mall,” Cook Brothers Construction Project Manager Tony Morley says. “It’s something of an architectural masterpiece of mixed materials from basalt panels and

frameless glass shop fronts to a large living wall of plants giving colour and vibrancy to the modern industrial design. It certainly was an interesting, enjoyable and rewarding build to work on and it was finished on time and to programme.” The developer Denis Sunderland had a property on the site prior to the earthquakes and had a vision to rebuild there as soon as possible. However, with the requirement for masterplanned proposals for the retail precinct it took four years for work to commence. “During the construction process we worked closely with Cequent Projects, the mall operators and the Christchurch City Council to minimise disruption to the surrounding businesses while still keeping on track with the agreed programme on a tight site with limited access,” Tony says. “All credit is due to the build team on site whose extra efforts achieved this great result.”

OUTSIDE THE BOX Annelies Zwaan met David Bar when she was living in a tiny house of her own making. Not a crammed flat like most students, but a beautiful little log cabin she had created as a response to rising housing costs.

hen she enrolled in full time study, the pair moved in together and Annelies sold her tiny house. And, when that tiny house sold for more than her reserve price, she set about building another one to move back into, creating the ultimate part time job she could do around study. “With the amount of interest she had, I realised there was quite a gap in the market for these unique homes and that became my inspiration,” David says. “It was very outside of the box, with lots of character and personality, which really goes well with a tiny house.” David joined forces with talented Austrian carpenter, Florian Angerer to meet demand for their tiny houses, with construction on number two commencing in September 2017. However, with Florian and David working full time in other jobs, it was slow going. Early this year, they sold the second tiny house, providing the capital for the third, and enabling the two men to focus on the business full time. “Our tiny houses are built on a trailer with steel framing, so people naturally make the comparison to a caravan. These are about as far removed from a caravan as possible and that’s been important to us.
