“The higher you go, the fewer women there are,” Wangari Maathai.

A

EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

Melinda Collins

university lecturer once asked me and a group of my female peers how many of us were feminists. One hand of the 12 present went up. That was just seven years ago; 118 years after women got the vote, 92 years after women were allowed to stand for parliament and 78 years after the first woman was elected into parliament. Somewhere between the brave and radical women’s rights campaigners of the late 1800s and post 1980s, it seems to have become uncool to be a feminist. Feminism by definition is simply the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes. Yet, according to the World Economic Forum’s 2017 Gender Gap Report, gender parity is still more than 200 years away. Men and women are different. We have different biological abilities, different hormones and we look – for the most part – different. There are slightly more women in the world than men – 52 percent of the population are women. And yet, most of the positions of power are occupied by men. In quite a literal sense, men rule the world. This made sense 1000 years ago when physical strength was one of the key determinants of survival. But we live in a very different world now, one where creativity, intelligence and innovation are equal determinants of success. Earlier this month we celebrated International Women’s Day. It’s one day a year where we reflect on the economic, political and social achievements of women. And, while it may not be ‘cool’ to identify as a feminist, as my university lecturer pointed out that day, why wouldn’t you?

Cantare in Italiano! By Céline Gibson

If you’ve long dreamed of singing Italian and sounding Italian, then Claudia Lues can help you realise your dream.

“I

think my love of music began in the crib,” says South African born Claudia. “My parents are Italian; my mother sang all the popular Italian songs, including opera and my maternal grandfather was a conductor, so music surrounded my entire life.” In response to the earthquakes, Claudia pitched the idea of Italian singing classes to the Canterbury Workers’ Educational Association (CWEA). “I felt the need to do my bit – to help traumatised people.”

The CWEA gave her a ‘test run’ to ascertain interest. “That was in 2014. I began with six students then it kept growing. Now I have 15…and I would love more!” Claudia says there’s no need to feel apprehensive about singing in a foreign language. “It doesn’t matter if you don’t speak Italian; the joy is in singing the words – that’s how you learn the language.” The song repertoire ranges from classics

to modern – “From Puccini to Bocelli, we do it all,” Claudia says. “My students say the class is the highlight of their week; they’ve grown to love the language so much, they’ve taken trips to Italy!” Claudia feels very fortunate to be doing what she loves most. “It’s who I am – a musical Italian. To share my passion and make people smile, that’s my goal. For me, it’s pure pleasure.” For more information visit admin@cwea.org.nz.

fashionable philanthropy For more than 10 years, Sue Bramwell has put her considerable entrepreneurial skills to work for Nurse Maude, partnering commercial enterprise with a charitable imperative. Metropol talks to the dedicated General Manager of Marketing about her love of philanthropy and her dedication to the vital service that has been caring for the community since 1896. You have enjoyed a decorated career in journalism, marketing, communications and writing books for children, what attracted you to Nurse Maude? My family will tell you I was very badly designed to provide care (I’m the sort of person who would wander off and read a book in the middle of changing an Elastoplast) but very well suited to find the money for that care to be provided by others. I have always believed that your right to exercise choice and retain independence shouldn’t disappear with age or illness and so does Nurse Maude. Making that work visible to others is a diverse, complex and interesting business. How challenging can the philanthropic environment be in terms of engaging support and how can people help more? Working with sponsors, individuals and businesses that really get what we do makes it a whole lot easier. It is because of them we can provide end of life care and support free of charge to our patients and their families. Whether people are donating money, clothing for our hospice shops, furniture, and household goods to Maudes on Trade Me, or sponsoring one of our fleet of little white cars…there’s a whole lot of ways to be part of

10 March 15, 2018 Metropol

providing that care to those who need it most. We’ve been caring for the people of Canterbury for more than 120 years now, and we’re an integral part of the community. Thankfully, the community is also an integral part of Nurse Maude. What are some of the greatest joys in your role? As someone who is well known as being able to shop to Olympic standard, it has to be opening our seven hospice shops throughout Christchurch. Opening the first and the biggest in Merivale nearly 10 years ago was a heartstopping moment in terms of calculated risk but it has been incredibly successful from the day it first opened its doors. The skill, compassion, and sheer commitment the staff and volunteers of Nurse Maude put into their work is also a joy to behold. For many of those we care for we are often the only people they may talk to from week to week. We never forget that.

What would surprise people about Nurse Maude? Nurse Maude effectively started district nursing in New Zealand. She devoted her life to the poor and sick on the streets of Christchurch and was the driving force behind the registration of nurses. Her legacy is a large and diverse organisation providing nursing in our hospital, hospice and the community, homecare, specialist services such as home dialysis, wound care, school-based nursing and paediatric services as well as founding the New Zealand Institute of Community Health Care for research and development. I live in hope that one day the woman who saved the lives of generations of Cantabrians will join the bronze busts of the Canterbury Heroes outside the Arts Centre. What is the overarching philosophy of the organisation and how do the team live and breathe it? Alleviating suffering in our community. It’s not just about providing nursing and homecare, it’s about recognising that with age can come social isolation and profound loneliness. There’s a real sense of loss that comes with increasing

dependence on others and the belief of some that their life no longer holds purpose. Everyone needs to matter to someone and they matter to us. What exciting plans and events are on the horizon for Nurse Maude? The rebuilding of the Nurse Maude Hospital on McDougall Avenue, opening in September, would have to be one of the biggest in terms of size and financial commitment. Canterbury has the largest population aged over 75. In less than eight years the number of people aged 85 or more will have doubled. Many of the frail elderly cared for by Nurse Maude live in reduced circumstances with little or no family support and a bare minimum of income. The Nurse Maude Hospital is where they can live their final months in a safe and compassionate environment, where specialist palliative care is provided at no cost to them. If there’s one thing Nurse Maude does exceptionally well, it’s providing care that is often considered too hard, too complex and too expensive by other aged care facilities without imposing private charges.

Powerful Partnerships 20 years of providing a platform for success

Metropol is honoured to work with some hugely successful brands and businesses in Canterbury. As we celebrate our 20 year anniversary, we want to take the opportunity to thank our loyal clients for trusting in our abilities to provide a platform to reach their targeted audiences and grow their businesses.

We started using Metropol’s ‘In Your Kitchen’ not long after we opened about three years ago and we haven’t regretted a day of it. Not having had a great experience with print advertising in the past, we were genuinely surprised and delighted by the level of customer engagement that our Metropol ads generated and how easily those leads translated into sales. We love how simple the service is, and how experienced the team are, as it makes doing business painless!

Administration Manager McDonald and Hartshorne Congratulations to the Metropol team on their 20th birthday. Whyte Construction have been a very well served customer working together for the last 12 years as part of a high performance, high quality magazine. Colleen came to us with an offer, looking for a building company to feature in a speciality article and then took us on the journey to regular print media advertising and articles. With remarkable success, our brand has grown to be recognised widely throughout the Canterbury region. Well done Metropol for the last 20 years, we look forward to working with your team and seeing all the developments in the future.

Michael Bayly General Manager Showbiz Christchurch

We started our business in 2004 and soon discovered that advertising in the Metropol was the way to go. Reaching a wide target market with their creative front pages, Metropol is a beautiful glossy magazine that I personally like to have sitting on my coffee table. They have always made the process easy with good communication via email and phone, to monthly visits to say hello and drop off some magazines. Our editorials are well written, always accompanied with photos and a great title. Congratulations on your 20year anniversary Metropol.

Showbiz Christchurch has been working with Metropol since 2016. As our organisation returned to staging full scale megamusicals at the rebuilt Isaac Theatre Royal, after an EQ enforced hiatus, Metropol was a natural partner. The publication is dynamic, creative and passionate about theatre and the arts in Christchurch. Metropol have worked with us to create memorable layouts that capture the magic of specific shows, and we greatly enjoy the relationship that allows such customised results to go to print.

Just when it seems the world is suffering a surfeit of doom and gloom stories, along comes a story big-hearted enough to illuminate the entire universe. Along comes Project EBC and four fabulous people – Mike Lowden, Bette Chen, Tina Morrell and Fergus Flannery.

P

roject EBC (Everest Base Camp) was born from the coming together of like-minded individuals whose passion and vision for Everest initiated a two-fold mission: to trek to Everest Base Camp (at an elevation of 5,364 metres) and to help a family from Khumjung Village rebuild their earthquake-damaged home. The home belongs to Tshering Thundu (Sandu), his wife, Tangii, and their four children. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake of April 25, 2015 wrought such havoc that Sandu – a porter and guide for more than 15 years who has summited Everest five times – and his family have had to camp under canvas ever since; not pleasant 16 March 15, 2018 Metropol

when winter temperatures can plummet to minus 15.

IF ANYBODY CAN UNDERSTAND THE HARDSHIPS THIS FAMILY HAS ENDURED, IT’S CANTABRIANS.” “If anybody can understand the hardships this family has endured, it’s Cantabrians,” Tina says.

The cost for the materials and freight for the repair of the family home exceed NZD $20,000. Funds raised in excess of building and repair costs will aid in the children’s schooling and any surplus to support the Project EBC team, which will be working on-site in Khumjung for two days alongside local Nepalese tradesmen. This is ‘trekking with a mission’. With a goal of raising $25,000, Project EBC ran the 2017 Mount Cook Marathon as a team and raised $1,800+; they completed the 2017 CBD Stampede Obstacle Course, and on February 17 hosted a fundraiser gala dinner which raised more than $7,000. “It may seem only one family’s benefitting,” says Fergus, “but the community will help build the home – the ripple effect from that can’t be measured.” Tina nods, “A bit like conquering Everest – one step at a time.” For more information, visit www.projectebc.com.

Transforming a 1980’s office block into a code-compliant, sophisticated hotel contains hidden complexities that the lay-person would struggle to comprehend. However, Weir Architecture Director Robert Weir achieved this feat of design, consenting, construction and ingenuity within two years, converting the Forsythe Barr building into the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

ogether with a total reconfiguration, the structure had to be strengthened with engineers incorporating carbon fibre wrapping. Robert says the original architects had rotated the stair and lift shafts by 45 degrees. “Creating viable rooms out of interesting shaped spaces was challenging!” Three lower levels are now conference rooms. Converting bars, restaurants and kitchens from car parks required a change to flat floors and working with lowered ceiling heights. One design challenge was concealing necessary additional services within the existing structure: there is a 50,000 litre water tank hidden beneath the café floor area to provide water in an emergency. Originally the carpark wings were visually incorporated with the main tower block, but facade removal and the incorporation of a crisp white cladding now delineates them from the central tower, bringing the tower into sharp relief. Robert has brought human scale at street level with the use of multi-faceted canopies. But Weir Architecture is also an awardwinning house designer too. Robert enjoys the challenges of residential and loves working with his clients. Many clients have built three houses with him over 30 years, as their life stages changed. His modern style is softened with colour and sophisticated detailing; creating spaces that flow seamlessly is a trademark.

Bryce Gallery: Min Kim Kingfisher

Ladies and gentlemen, forget Paris, London and New York. The best in art is right here in Ōtautahi, Christchurch. For your viewing pleasure, we’ve gone in search of some of the latest and greatest. When it comes to art, these four favourites are exhibitionists in all the right ways.

1.

ART METRO: With more than 400 students attending classes weekly, this art school is ace! There’s an ABC for beginners and for the advanced student, classes in freehand drawing, sketching, pastels and water colour; there are classes in oils, acrylics and pastel techniques and, for those into self-expression, classes in abstract art. Children are offered after school painting, drawing and cartoon classes and the holiday programme is very popular. Do browse their gallery and chat to the artists at work.

3. 4.

FO GUANG YUANG GALLERY: Taiwanese artisan Huang Da An is currently on exhibition until April 8, 2018. Huang is a self-taught artist who has recreated the traditional woodfiring ceramic art through a decadelong of experimentation. His ceramics speak for themselves; each piece is a joy – a wonder of texture and colour. Not to be missed! Auckland artist Dean Buchanan’s works will be on display from April to mid-July. His oils, typically large in size, are colourful, vivid and dramatic, reflecting Dean’s passion and connection to his homeland. Rumour has it that if you’re looking for the painting to grace your home, it should be a Dean Buchanan.

CoCA TOI MOROKI: Peter Robinson’s solo exhibition Fieldwork in which delicate, sculptural forms (comprising wood, wire, paper, metals, magnets and nails) sprawl through CoCA’s galleries. The intricate scale of the materials also highlights the nature of CoCA’s ‘Christchurch Style’ Brutalist Architecture. The exhibition coincides with the building’s 50th anniversary this year. CoCA was designed by Minson, Henning Hansen and Dines and was purpose built in 1968. Fieldwork runs 3 March to 13 May. Metropol March 15, 2018 19

BRYCE GALLERY: Their first 2018 exhibition is ‘Nature Speak’, a celebration of our native flora and fauna from artists J. Stewart, Min Kim and Galina Kim. J. Stewart’s landscapes are mighty, magnificent works that draw the eye and hold your attention, while his C.F. Goldie inspired portraits are flawlessly executed. The subjects look into your very soul; their eyes speak of their stories, their history. Min Kim’s native tree and birdlife works are exquisite in detail and rendering. Min’s Kowhai, for example, is of the brightest, fieriest autumnal hues, while her New Zealand Falcon pays full tribute to these noble birds of prey. Galina Kim brings the flora component to the exhibition with flowers that you wish to reach out and touch. Her wildflowers are an untamed delight, while her peonies are delicate, yet flaunting and voluptuous. Planned since December 2017, ‘Nature Speak’ was definitely worth the wait! A collaboration between two North Canterbury wineries, a grape harvesting company and several other generous donors is producing wine with a difference and the couple behind the project-turned-wine-label are still reeling from its early success.

lanna and Pete Chapman initially started 27Seconds as a oneoff fundraiser for Hagar – an international NGO that helps survivors of modern-day slavery. “We wanted to help so we created delicious wine, where 100

percent of the profits go to survivors,” Alanna says. “It was only meant to be a one-off fundraiser. But as we sort of delved deeper, it snowballed into a company.” Terrace Edge, which is owned by

Pete’s parents, provided the grapes for 27Seconds’ first run of wine and Omihi Creek Harvesting harvested them for free. Greystone Wines, just up the road from Terrace Edge, did the winemaking, with various others jumping on board to help. Alanna was working in Hagar’s Christchurch office when she learned that every 27 seconds a person is trafficked into slavery and, while in India, walking through the alleyways of Sonagachi in Calcutta, the country’s largest red-light district, she and Pete witnessed it first-hand. Alanna and Pete, a viticulturist who works on the family vineyard, realised wine was one way they could help. “We love the idea that something accessible, like wine, can be used for good. It empowers people to make a difference through just a single choice.” Alanna says the combined generosity of the wine community meant 27Seconds was able to give away $10 from every $17-$23 bottle in the first run of wine. Greystone Wines provided heavily discounted winemaking, Kiwi bottle supplier O-I halved its prices, another company provided free caps and local designer Piet van Leeuwen of Port Edison did the labels pro bono. “We love our labels. We’re super proud of them. Piet wanted to portray the name itself so that’s why there are 27 dots on the front and there are three dots that you can’t see as well. The idea behind that is once someone has been sold it is sort of like an ending,” Alanna says. “It’s a really morbid topic but there is hope as well. There are things that can be put in place that reduce trafficking. We wanted it to be a hopeful brand as well so that’s why the colours are quite bright.” 27Seconds’ Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Rosé are available online and there are plans to start selling wholesale to local restaurants. Three bottles of 27Seconds wine can provide a young survivor with a school uniform, shoes and stationery for a year, five can provide a bike to get to school and seven bottles every month can put a survivor through university. Lansdown House, the venue for Lansdown Summer

Music at Lansdown After Mozart’s Don Giovanni on St Patrick’s Day, ‘Lansdown Summer’ concludes its 5th festival at the beautiful heritage property at 132 Old Tai Tapu Road, with its second ‘narropera’ – a narrated format of opera. Weber’s ‘Der Freischütz’, The Devil’s Marksman will be held on 25 and 31 March.

arropera reduces an opera to its musical and storyline essentials. Performances last 85 minutes and are without interval, as mesmerising as a ‘Who dunnit’. One hundred and fifty years ago, Wellington’s Evening Post wrote, “The great event of the operatic season, Der Freischütz, took place last night. The applause was immense... such cheers hardly ever have been heard before in this theatre.” Fifty years later, the same newspaper wrote of another performance, “Lovers of operatic music will welcome the performance of Weber’s Der Freischütz, next Saturday. The best cast of soloists to be obtained in the Dominion has been engaged”. The NZ Herald described a third performance of Der Freischütz as “one of the most beautiful compositions in the repertoire of operatic music, too well known to require any detailed statement of the plot”. It is hard to believe that a work that was so loved and admired in early New Zealand is now unknown. So, head to Lansdown and discover the exquisite music and wonderful story of Der Freischütz, for yourself. When and where: Giovanni 17 March; Freischütz 25 March and 31 March, The Golden Room, Lansdown House, 132 Old Tai Tapu Road at 8PM, parking in grounds. Bookings, location map and more are available from www.lansdownsummer.com or c/o Box Office, Court Theatre 03-963 0870. Take a picnic, gates open at 6.30pm.

aking its worldwide debut this March at The Court Theatre, Easy Money is a laugh-a-minute satire about greed, with playwright Hall describing the play as having “no moral, no message – just entertainment.” Adapted from the 17th Century play The Alchemist; Easy Money is a hilarious romp which follows the two con artists as they try to fool their prestigious Auckland neighbours into buying shares in the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The duo claims that there’s a congestion toll coming that will send shares skyrocketing… If, in fact, there are any shares at all. Featuring Roy Snow, Luanne Gordon, Lynda Milligan, Bruce Phillips, Geoffrey Heath, Jared Corbin, Gregory Cooper, Susannah Kenton, Melinda Joe and Albany Peseta, director Ross Gumbley has assembled a dream cast. “I’ve got a cast who are wonderful actors and packed with funny bones.” Will Trudi & Stephen’s neighbours fall for it? The question on Hall’s mind is whether or not audiences will. His aim is for audiences to walk away wondering, “...would we have been taken in by them?” To find out, you’ll just have to go and see it all play out... Easy Money opens at The Court on 17th March and runs through until 14th April.

ast year’s National Flash Fiction Day (NFFD) competition saw Christchurch writer – and former Metropol scribe – Rachel Smith, awarded runner-up, while first place went to Auckland writer, Patrick Pink, for his flash Gunshots Are Too Common. “Flash is a concentrated moment, a distilled glimpse, the juicy essence between characters, setting, conflict and time,” Patrick says of the genre. “Every word is precious and precise. Flash challenges the writer. Flash is poetry. Flash is meditation. It restricts and releases. Flash is the visceral stuff of heart and guts.”

FLASHEST FICTION By Céline Gibson

Up and down the country writers are pounding their keyboards, pausing only to scratch their heads as they scrabble to craft a flash little story that will be awarded the flashest little 300 words in Aotearoa. 28 March 15, 2018 Metropol

Founded in 2012, NFFD is now one of the most anticipated writing competitions in New Zealand. The 2018 round is open until 30 April and, as New Zealand’s celebration of the shortest form of fiction writing, winners are announced on the shortest day of the year – 22 June. This year’s judges are acclaimed short story writers, novelists and poets Tracey Slaughter and Sue Wootton. Last year, NFFD launched the Youth Category, and this year sees Patrick and poet/writer Tim Jones as judges in this space. NFFD 2018 introduces a te reo Māori prize in both youth and adult categories, judged by poet/ novelist and short story writer Vaughan Rapatahana. This year, the fourth annual Micro Madness series will also run, with 22 micros selected for inclusion, and three winners will be selected from the 22 finalists. So, calling all Cantabrian writers...the challenge is on! Think you can fashion that flashiest flash? Well then… head to those keyboards – pronto! Held at Space Academy, June 22 from 6-8pm. CITY OF CHOICE In a recent speech, Peter Townsend the former CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, referred to Christchurch as “the City of Choice”. A quick trip around the town will underline the ‘about to blossom’ feel that the city has. 2018 is going to be a year of celebrations whether it is new inner-city shopping centres, the Christchurch Hospital extensions, the Terrace, Hoyts new fifty million dollar theatre complex, Victoria Square or the new Central Library. Cones are starting to disappear slowly and the completion of the Town Hall with its new space for the CSO is scheduled for next year. The promise to build on this opportunity is evident as we look at the red zone and consider the wide range of options, the revitalisation of New Brighton and - after too long a time, a repaired Cathedral. In the inner city, new residential projects are well underway and stylish complexes such as Cranmer Gardens, offer a genuinely exciting alternative to suburban living. This luxury development is exclusive to Harcourts Holmwood and comprises of 39 spacious, high-spec apartments and penthouses.

30 March 15, 2018 Metropol

In the suburbs and in the satellite towns, new subdivisions and shops are springing up and just in time, a network of motorways are connecting them to the city. Of course Christchurch has a long way to go and while it has already been seven years we need to keep reminding ourselves of the magnitude of the task and the progress which has been made so far. What it represents is the bright future of our city and that same optimism can be applied to the real estate market. Low interest rates and sustained migration are the external factors having a positive effect on property. At Holmwood we continue to see encouraging numbers through our open homes and strong auction results in 2018. Christchurch today is an incomplete work of art but it will become a city of choice, just mark my words.

radiology department, an expanded intensive care unit, an emergency department and a rooftop helipad. • The Margaret Mahy Family Playground is the largest play project in New Zealand. • There have been 1240 demolitions within the four avenues since the September 2010 earthquakes. • There are 681 short term rentals available in Christchurch available through organisations such as Airbnb. • The 42,000m2 Justice Precinct is heated and cooled using aquifers beneath. It’s a heat exchange technology that works like a heat pump. • Christchurch residents and visitors will be able to enjoy new riverside bars, central city cinemas, a farmers’ market, a new swimming pool complex, and a new library in 2018. More than half a billion dollars’ worth of developments are nearing completion and are set to open across the city this year.

If you’ve ever been to a Showbiz Christchurch performance and been blown away by the onstage performance, you’re seeing just a small fraction of the local talent that culminates in an end product of this calibre.

T

he 80-year-old community theatrical society stages three productions each year. The Saunders & Co 2018 season commences at the Isaac Theatre Royal with Wicked from 6-21 April; followed by Broadway Hitmen, a concert of Cole Porter and Andrew Lloyd Webber hits, from 13-15 July; and is completed by Les Misérables opening on 14 September. Up to 100 people can be involved behind the scenes in just one show, volunteers who put hundreds of unpaid hours into their roles. In Wicked’s on stage performance, you will see two leads (played by four actors on alternate nights), six principal roles, 16 ensemble cast and 15 dancers, with 16 backing vocalists and 18 orchestral performers in the pit. Backstage however, 100 equally important parts make it all come together.

Vicki Morris-Williamson has been volunteering for Showbiz Christchurch for 19 years and is part of a team responsible for ensuring hats and costumes are made show ready and fit the brief of Director Stephen Robertson. Successful Broadway shows like Wicked, complete national and international tours before the rights to stage them are given to community theatre groups. Showbiz Christchurch is the first in New Zealand to get these rights to stage Wicked. “The Showbiz Christchurch performance is a whole new production,” Vicki says. “Stephen creates the best shows he can and is completely invested in bringing something special to the stage. He visualises exactly what he wants down to the smallest detail. We then start with the bones of the costumes, adding and improving everything, making it our own unique show.” Vicki is currently living in a sea of green, as she works diligently to overhaul hats that came from an international production and create new ones for the Emerald City townsfolk in Wicked. Just about every member of the cast is on stage for this scene and every costume has a hat. That’s 35 hats, each representing Vicki’s work to realise Stephen’s vision for it. Vicki wears many hats herself in the months that go into each performance. She is involved in costuming, pre-setting (planning set positioning), pack in (putting props up in the theatre), then the intheatre rehearsals, before the run of shows. “I warn my hubby heading into show season, that he won’t see me for three months,” she laughs. But working around a full-time job, it’s not an exaggeration. It’s a family affair for her though. Vicki’s son James (then 12) joined her in her first production, playing Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Her daughter Jenna – a professional dancer from the New Zealand School of Dance – made her Showbiz Christchurch debut at 19 and will be performing in Wicked when it starts next month. uilt in 1934 and leased from the Sydney Tramway Museum, Tram 1888 started life at the Fort Macquarie Depot – now the location of the Sydney Opera House. It was used on the city’s Watson’s Bay line until the Fort Macquarie Depot closed in 1955 and even received air raid precaution modifications to minimise window damage during World War II. From 1955 to 1960, the tram was shuffled around Sydney depots until the body was written off and sold to a tobacco farmer in New South Wales, where it accommodated seasonal farm hands for 24 years until 1984, when the farmer donated the battered tram body to a local council interested in its preservation. The restoration involved removing hundreds of nails that had been hammered into the inside of the body for coat hooks, lantern holders and clotheslines. The tram was furnished with original R-class seats before being put on display in Bondi Junction for five years. In 1993, it entered storage before the Sydney Tramway Museum took responsibility for it in 2000. The museum shipped Tram 1888 to Bendigo, where it was restored to an operational level. In subsequent years, it was put on display in Melbourne, repainted and used on a tour around Melbourne’s tram system. In 2009, Tram 1888 was leased to Auckland’s Museum of Transport and Technology, before being leased to Christchurch Attractions late last year.

City’s new Centrepiece The inner city’s trams are iconic Christchurch at its best. But the latest addition to Christchurch Attractions’ eyecatching fleet is Tram 1888 – a handsome blue R-class with a very colourful life.

The perfect throw-over for a t-shirt or turtleneck; the ultimate in effortless, chic cover-ups; a loyal companion to every season – the kimono, a Japanese native, is gloriously adaptable and lives up to its literal translation ‘a thing to wear’.

F

rom flowing tops to floor-sweeping maxis, the kimono silhouette has found favour with multiple styles. The hallmarks of a kimono include its robe style, attached collar and wide, floaty arms. Flattering for every body type given the extensive range of options, the kimono captures the imagination most when made in a bold pattern or plush fabric – we’re a big fan of vibrant velvets right now, particularly in millennial pink or this year’s Pantone colour of the year – ultra violet. The go-to in Japan for formal events or festivals, the kimono has retained its special occasion status but is also channeling some low-key vibes too. Perfect as a slip-over at the beach or as a resort-wear staple, this stylish shape-shifter is a serious contender for most versatile wardrobe must-have.

Kristen says they will soon be offering more specialist short courses, in areas such as airbrushing and hair styling. “We have a photography studio and hair basins here, so the new facility will enable a much greater range of options.”

eye care exceptional

Christchurch’s Corneal Lens Corporation is thrilled to welcome the Evolve range of eye drops for dry eyes. Created and manufactured in London, Evolve Eye Drops quickly became a top seller in the UK, prompting Corneal Lens Corporation to bring the premium products to New Zealand.

hitney Parsons, Marketing and Accounts Manager for Corneal Lens Corporation, says because this is a top quality and specialised dry eye product range, it is only available through optometrists nationwide. The four products in the range are: Hypromellose 3 percent for mild dry eye, Carmellose 0.5 percent for moderate dry eye, and H.A 0.2 percent for severe dry eyes. There are also eyelid wipes for general lid and eyelash hygiene, Whitney adds. Whitney’s favourites are the Carmellose and the H.A., but your optometrist will advise you on the best item for you and offer free samples. “Each of the four products within the range is preservative free and can be used with contact lenses,” Whitney says. They are easy to use – contained in a small portable squeezy bottle, with blue tip technology to help with accuracy, and are competitively priced. Once opened, the bottle will last for three months. As well as supplying Evolve eye drops to New Zealand, Corneal Lens Corporation is the maker and supplier of specialist contact lenses, contact lens solutions, TheraTears, and Ortho-K – the type of contact lenses that you wear overnight to reshape the cornea of your eye.

“I

t’s not enough to just sell a makeup anymore – makeup needs to be good for the skin, outperform pharmacy and retail brands for wear and pigment density and, really importantly, consumers are becoming far more socially responsible – makeup now needs to be cruelty free.” Two years ago, frustrated by trying to find a brand to stock in her own successful Christchurch clinic Making Faces, Pip decided to create her own collection. The brand Lauren & Louise was titled over a glass of wine using Pip’s middle name – Lauren – and her collaborator and makeup artist Tammy’s middle name – Louise. It took two years to finalise the collection, which is sourced predominantly from New York and Australia. “We tried hundreds of formulations from multiple high-end cosmetics manufacturers around the world and we couldn’t be happier with the final collection – our stockists’ feedback has been fantastic.” Other than the manufacturing, Pip has been dedicated to sourcing New Zealand suppliers wherever possible. “I love that some of our suppliers are literally two minutes away. During the development stage I felt like I was seeing our packaging and branding experts every other day. The team at Pakworld did an amazing job, as did Spectrum Print and Riana Bennett from Ree Design, who also helped with our entire marketing image and print material. Another award-winning Christchurch business we worked with was Mint Design – they were integral in helping us with our online presence. We are asking New Zealand hair and beauty salons to support local, so it’s important we are walking the walk too.” The new season’s 37 eyeshadow and pigment pots launching this month also tell a story and personalise the journey of the brand. To name a few there is Tawny Tammy, Samtastic Bronze (after Pip’s fantastic receptionist), Nelliata (after Pip’s best friend and Lauren & Louise National Sales and Marketing Manager Shanelle) and even a holographic fuschia named after Pip’s daughter’s colourful Nanny, Deborah. “Without these people Lauren & Louise wouldn’t exist so it’s just a small recognition of thanks and that they too are part of this awesome brand.” For more information or to become a stockist, email info@laurenlouise.co.nz.

AN ORTHODONTIC REVOLUTION “Online ‘dental monitoring’ will completely change the delivery of orthodontic care,” says Ronald Sluiter of OrthodontiX.

D

ental monitoring is appbased artificial intelligence developed in Paris to follow an ortho-dontic treatment intensely and Ronald is pleased to offer it in each of the three Canterbury OrthodontiX clinics. In his opinion, the sophisticated software will become essential for busy people, or for those who live a distance from their clinic. While a standard two year plus on aligner treatment requires about 25 visits to the orthodontist, dental monitoring can cut those trips down to just 12 or 13. Currently suited to Invisalign aligners, the technology will be available for use on all the aligning tools. The programme enables a patient to take weekly photographs of their teeth, with and without aligners, using their smartphone, then Ronald receives

that scan for analysis at the clinic. A patient from the West Coast is using the technology. “I haven’t seen her in eight weeks, but I have seen her progress every week!” The app notifies Ronald if the client forgets to take a picture, it checks that the attachments are still in place, that the movement is happening correctly, and identifies when a patient should move to the next aligner. It costs extra, but Ronald says the benefits far outweigh the cost, reducing logistics and decreasing treatment time because of optimised aligner change. Aligners fit better, making treatment more discrete, patients receive instant feedback and more intensive care through weekly analysis, plus people love to see evidence of how their smile is changing.

Good Stuff By Melinda Collins

Natural, preservative-free and organic are the buzz words of the culinary world, as we increasingly seek foods which are equally as good for our bodies as they are for our planet. Yet it’s not just our food which is getting the natural makeover, as we seek safer and simpler products to fill up our bathrooms.

feminine detailing from laceembellished jerseys to floral quilted jackets, and also the lovely Lissette-L pants. NYDJ jeans’ winter range has landed, and timeless New Zealand-made Anne Mardell dresses and tops come in adorable patterns in sizes 8 to 18. When Ali was a youngster, her favourite saying was “I’m made in the shade” – meaning I’m cool, home ‘n’ hosed. And that’s how she likes her clients to feel – relaxed and comfortable. “I buy in what’s easy to wear, and what fits and hangs beautifully. You just put it on and feel great.” Made in the Shade, 151a Colombo Street, Beckenham, open Monday-Friday 9am5.30pm and Saturdays 10am-4pm or visit madeintheshade.co.nz.

lean, green and organic are just some of the terms that have crossed the culinary divide and made their way into mainstream makeups with, even more surprisingly, vegan and glutenfree also making an increasing appearance on cosmetic packaging, alongside fragrance-free and paraben-free. Thankfully, New Zealand and Australia are proud homes to some pretty powerful players in the natural beauty space, including Plantae and Ethique. And it’s not just the ingredients list that these top talents are taking more responsibility over, with brands such as the Goodness range of skincare products and Christchurch’s own Lauren & Louise makeups choosing to source and supply only cruelty-free products. Germany was first to this consumer consciousness party, banning animal testing in 1986 and, by 2009, the entire European Union had joined in. Since then, Israel, India, Norway, New Zealand, South Korea, Turkey, Taiwan and parts of Brazil have all banned cosmetic testing on animals. We’ve roped Australia in too, with the country now committed to banning all cosmetic animal testing by July 2018.

Something to

SMILE ABOUT Do you have one or several missing teeth? Have you had dentures for years but want something solid and natural looking to chew and smile with? Dental implants may be the solution for you.

Love

ental implants are small, pure titanium screws that are surgically placed in your jaw and have proven themselves to be a reliable addition to the treatment options currently available in high quality dental practice. Implants are placed and then left to heal for three or more months, during which time ‘osseointegration’ occurs – the bone heals around the implant fixtures, locking them into place permanently. False teeth, crowns, or other appliances can then be attached, either with screws or cement. If only one tooth is to be replaced, generally a porcelain crown will be attached to a single implant fixture. If a few teeth are missing, more than one fixture may be required – a three or four teeth bridge can often be attached to two implants. Or if a full arch (all the upper or lower teeth) is to be restored, several fixtures can be placed, with the denture either screwed to or clipped onto the fixtures. Dental implant treatment can initially be more costly than conventional treatment options. However, as it provides a very long term solution, the cost is often comparable over time. Doctor David Walsh has more than 25 years of experience with providing implant based solutions for people of all ages and backgrounds. label which is characterised by strong, paredback, minimalist design, her pieces are a powerful combination of unfussy femininity. This is a designer who is all about timeless quality. Metropol talks to Juliette about her sartorial inspirations and her latest collection. Can you tell us how your career began? Mum taught me to sew from a very early age, but I never had aspirations to be a fashion designer. I studied Textiles at Massey University in Wellington and went on to win the Dare to Be competition to study at Parson’s School of Design in New York. This time really shaped who I was as a designer and it was only then that I decided I was going to come back to New Zealand to start my own label.

The fashion industry has been said to not take any prisoners, why do you think you’ve been such a success? Perseverance and clarity. I have had always had a very clear idea of my design sense and clarity about where I’ve wanted to go. How do you create designs which resonate so strongly with New Zealand women? Opening stores has given me amazing insight into what women want to wear. I have always been a selfish designer however, having direct contact with the wonderful people who engage with my brand gives me invaluable insight. I am in business to make women feel good about themselves. Who are some of your biggest fashion inspirations? I can never succinctly answer this question as I don’t look to celebrities or other designers for inspiration. Inspiration comes from more abstract places for me such as beautiful open landscapes, subtle movement in a silk or dappled shadow formations. What’s the most fulfilling part of what you do? Seeing women in my designs, working with my amazing team and getting to do what I love every day. What are some of the new looks and styles which we can expect to see coming through in the coming seasons? AW18 Undertone is such a beautiful rich collection and my stand out piece is the Surround Coat in Talc; it completely envelopes without overwhelming you. I also love the rich merlot and deep reds that run through the collection.

ocused on transitional science, to identify a very clear nexus between what’s being done in the field of research and the outcome for the patient, the real ethos of the foundation is around legacy – what it can do to make a better life for future generations and in turn, ensure less suffering for people with chronic illness and their families. While trying to reduce the bureaucracy that frustrates so many in the field, the foundation’s assessment process for its research is no less rigorous than any other. “The key is that we are not just some faceless funding agency; we develop a meaningful relationship with those we support,” CEO Kate Russell says. “With the likes of the Universities of Canterbury and Otago, we feel a great deal of responsibility, friendship and goodwill towards them, because they are doing a brilliant job.” An important part of Canterbury Medical Research Foundation’s remit focuses on health issues important to New Zealanders and those with a local relevance to Christchurch such as depression and anxiety, particularly post-quakes. “We also support the ADHD work of Dr Julia Rucklidge at University of Canterbury, Prof Frank Frizzell and his team working on colorectal research and so many others. The work of our own NZ Brain Research Institute is an important part of what we do. “The Brain ‘Centre of Research Excellence’ (CoRE) that our institute participates in, has been given a very clear focus – to push the beginnings of cognitive decline out by five years. Most people, if they live long enough, will experience some level of cognitive decline, so if we can delay this, it affects the whole trajectory of the disease.” One of the main reasons it exists is to fill a very important gap.

“We are niche funders who commit to small and interesting projects to help them become large and interesting projects. “The reason Professor Don Bevan started our foundation is because we have a huge hospital base here, a medical school and the University of Canterbury. We have a lot of lovely, young, bright minds fresh out of study with their PhD, and if they are not supported or given opportunities, they go overseas and we risk permanently losing that intellectual capital.” With $1.6 million given away annually by Canterbury Medical Research Foundation and a goal to give away $2 million annually by 2020, Russell says the foundation wishes to sincerely thank all its generous donors. “We have been so blessed in the generous bequests received. A lot of people think, ‘I don’t donate because surely they are only interested in big donors’, but actually, it is our hundreds and hundreds of small donors who give us what they can that helps us push our reserves up. There are a lot of worthy charities in New Zealand and we’re so thankful because the only reason we can do all of this is because of our generous community.” Tomorrow – 16 March – Canterbury Medical Research Foundation is partnering with the Cancer Society for its annual Russley Golf Club Tournament. Also on the agenda this year, is its annual Wine and Art Auction where $100,000 is guaranteed to be raised to support a selected project. Applications for project funding have also just closed, so keep an eye out for further news. Visit www.cmrg.org.nz. Metropol March 15, 2018 49

ehind the glitz and glamour of the day itself, are key essentials fundamental to the success of the day. Few would know this better than Dakins Group, a true specialist in the sanitation industry.

54 March 15, 2018 Metropol

In a stroke of irony, Dakins has taken the concept of sanitation and made it into something extremely stylish – an impressive feat! Offering everything from single unit portaloos to luxury facilities, guests can enjoy posh practicalities. The business is justly proud to be the owner of the South Island’s largest selection of 20-foot and 40-foot portable toilet and bathroom blocks cementing its place as the region’s foremost supplier to large scale events. The pride and joy of the fleet is a stateof-the-art New Zealand-built deluxe men’s and women’s bathroom block called the ‘Sheraton’ with contemporary vanity areas, full-length mirrors, hand lotion and even hair straighteners for that special touch. “Throughout any event all our facilities are monitored by service technicians charged with keeping everything in pristine condition. She hand-draws all her designs, encouraging client involvement, which are then handcrafted inhouse. Display pieces are unique hand makes too. “We also recreate old into new. GRACEFULLY

Beautifully styled grey hair is turning more heads than ever before in a growing trend towards natural beauty – enhanced with a little salon magic.

M

aster Stylist Vicki O’Fee, of V for Hair and Beauty upstairs in Merivale Mall, says women often start to grey by 35, or even earlier – and many are now loving the look and making the most of the change. It’s important to choose a shade that suits your skin. The grey colour palette in clothes fashion has never dated, so sultry hues of silver, sand, dove, iris and lilac for hair can also be incredibly feminine and flattering. Like any change in hair colour or style, it’s a transition, so planning ahead for special occasions is vital. V for Hair and Beauty’s stylists offer a complimentary consultation and may suggest going lighter with a base colour, highlights, age-blend colours to soften obvious lines, or weaving in lowlights for darker hair. Professional photographs are a must. “You have one shot at making an impression – and there’s definitely an art to it. It’s a marginal expense compared to the benefits.” She believes presentation is paramount and with her experience and attention to detail,

Marijke offers those useful and creative tricks of her trade. “It is important not to leave any stone unturned or cut corners. Be prepared for all scenarios. ut if silver linings can come in ship-sized packages, this could well be one, with the ship’s demise spawning a historical account of the Kaiapoi Port. Developed soon after Kaiapoi was established in the 1850s, the Port of Kaiapoi became one of the busiest coastal ports in the country, but its 175-year history was at risk of being lost. When the ship met its untimely end, the MV Tuhoe Kaiapoi Trust took up the challenge of preserving its history. Rebranding itself as the Kaiapoi Maritime Heritage Trust, it set about commissioning a book to detail the port’s colourful past. “We wanted to do something to recognise the history of the port and the boats that sailed in and out of it for all those

years,” explains trust member Andrew Blackwell. Writer Colin Amodeo and trust member Paul Croucher captured the changing fortunes of the port that was once the centre of commerce for North Canterbury in Taking the bar – A history of Kaiapoi Port. It was a labour of love for Colin, a maritime historian with ancestors who have been seamen. “It is the kind of book which will appeal to ship lovers elsewhere and not just to Kaiapoi residents. My intention had been to place Kaiapoi port history in a wider framework of New Zealand history,” Colin says. Taking the Bar is available from Blackwells Department Store in Kaiapoi. cuisine Drinkable Soups By Kate Pierson

When someone suggests wrapping your laughing gear around the newest culinary powerhouse ‘drinkable soup’ you’d be well within your rights to look at them like they’re a little bit bonkers for stating the obvious. The concept of drinkable soup seems pretty standard, right? Wrong.

D

rinkable soup is flipping the status quo on its head. The new foodie favourite dominating the headlines has rendered spoons redundant. Just your lips or a straw are all that’s required to indulge. Dubbed the new ‘juice’, drinkable soups can be made from scratch at home and enjoyed cold or hot on the go, or alternatively, purchased from the cafes or grocers who are supporting this new wellness warrior and its super powers. Superfood power that is. Drinkable soups are packing a super healthy punch with all their yummy ingredients – veggies galore, plus all the other goodies like kale, hemp seeds, ginger and turmeric. Marrying the best of both worlds – convenience and nutrition – they’ve moved out of the margins and into the mainstream. Bottoms up!

Uber hit the global market some time ago, revolutionising the transport industry overnight. Now we’re being spoon fed generous amounts of its culinary innovation via Uber Eats. Shattering glass ceilings in the tech industry, the Country Manager Emma Foley talks with Metropol about what it’s like to run one of the most iconic brands in the world.

1. 2. 3.

The Uber Eats concept is revolutionary – what does it mean for the culinary industry in Christchurch? Uber Eats offers Christchurch locals unprecedented convenience, selection and reliability to get the food they love, delivered to where they happen to be. There are currently more than 100 restaurants and more than 5,000 freshly prepared menu items available on the Uber Eats app. Since we launched in October 2017 we’ve expanded the Uber Eats Christchurch service area by more than 55 percent. We covered 100 square kms at launch, and we now deliver to an area spanning 155 square kms. How is Uber Eats harnessing the best of technological innovation? Uber Eats is an on-demand food delivery app and website that helps bring millions of people around the world the food they want, at the tap of a button. If you compare our platform to retailers who embraced the move to online and to customers wanting to use multiple channels, they are doing the best today. We are passionate about helping restaurants thrive. We do this by offering 24/7 support, access to innovative marketing campaigns, data about the meals they sell, and reliable access to delivery services. Women in tech remains a hot topic given the gender imbalance across the industry – how does it feel to be the Country Manager for one of the world’s most recognisable tech companies? I absolutely love my job and feel lucky to be surrounded by passionate people. Currently my

60 March 15, 2018 Metropol

manager and her manager are both female, so I feel lucky to have some great role models to look up to. I would love to see even more women going into careers in technology. While the obvious path is continuing to study STEM subjects through school and university, it’s also great to realise that it’s never too late to give it a go. I’m a passionate member of our ‘WomANZ’ committee (our Australia and NZ women’s employee group). One of the projects is determining how we can use our skills and experience to encourage more young women into tech careers.

4.

What does a day in your life look like? There’s no typical day leading the Uber Eats NZ business, and it’s one of the things I love most about my role. I’d say my role is a 50/50 mix of people management and business strategy – but every day looks different! I might start the day with a check-in meeting with my team, discussing our key business metrics and diving into any issues or project details. In the afternoon, you might find me on a call with a colleague in Brisbane talking about our virtual restaurant initiatives (where restaurants can run new brands out of one kitchen), a meeting with one of our large restaurant partners, then in a call with one of our product team in Singapore discussing the rollout of one of our new app features. And of course, finding some time for emails! It takes a lot to stay on top of all the exciting things happening with Uber, so connecting with my colleagues around the world is a must.

he humble chickpea is packed full of goodness and when roasted makes a tasty snack to munch on while enjoying a beer, or as a healthy lunchbox treat. Ingredients • 2 cans chickpeas • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon salt • 2 to 4 teaspoons spices or finely chopped fresh herbs, like chili powder, curry powder, garam masala, cumin, sweet or smoked paprika, rosemary, thyme, or other favourite spices and herbs Method • Pre-heat oven to 210C • Strain and rinse chickpeas. Dry the chickpeas well. Lay them on a clean dish towel or paper towels and pat them until they are matte and dry. Remove any loose skins that come off while drying. • Spread them in an even layer on a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Mix well so they are evenly coated. Don’t add the spices now, add them when fresh from

the oven, or they may burn. • Roast 20-30 minutes, shaking the pan every 10 minutes. The chickpeas are done when golden and slightly darkened, dry and crispy on the outside, and soft in the middle. • Sprinkle your choice of spices over the chickpeas and mix well to coat evenly. Serve while still warm and crispy or cool and enjoy in salads or as a lunch box snack.

hese clever little culinary concoctions have been injected with matcha. A fine green tea powder, matcha has been produced in Japan for centuries, with Buddhist monks using it to help them stay calm and alert during meditation. Despite this illustrious past, matcha has only really hit the fore of western conscience in more recent years, where it has struck a culinary chord with the wellbeing crowd. Its vivid green colour comes from the high levels of chlorophyll produced by growing the tea leaves in the shade, a method that also boosts its inherent antioxidants. While matcha can be purchased in its raw form in health shops, it’s increasingly making an appearance in cafés, bakeries and even restaurants inside a daring range of baking, smoothies, desserts and plenty of other cooked creations – even burger buns! Matcha and… well anything really, might just be a match made in culinary heaven. Metropol March 15, 2018 67

These were posted on the Facebook page of one of her customers on Valentine’s Day.

Heath Wells posted at 16:33 posted on his Facebook: “So this just happened… This morning Heather Wells and I had a conversation along the lines of Valentine’s Day being a commercialised thing and we wouldn’t buy into it and get each other anything. So, as per my previous post, I went along to Patisserie Yahagi and got that heart shaped treat… Well, it seems Heather Wells had similar thoughts, and also called into Patisserie Yahagi on the way home and picked up this gorgeous looking chocolate tart! Great minds think alike!” This heartwarming story is right at the heart of what Eri loves most about her business. “They got their desserts from Patisserie Yahagi for each other because they thought this was the best for each other!” And so Eri will continue to bake her desserts and cakes to make people you love like your partner, family and friends happy. Bohemian decor can’t help but be a stand-out style in any room. Bohemian is too hip to be square; it’s a welcome digression away from the conversative; proudly eclectic. Whoever partners with this concept must appreciate an adventurous aesthetic.

free-spirit, bohemian decor embraces culture, colour and carefree style – from compelling patterns and fiery orange, saturated purple, terracotta and metallic shades, to ornate boxes, mismatched china, vintage finds, and striking tapestries, every feature in your bohemian space should tell a story. The best part about bohemian decor is that it can be done on a budget with repurposed and reclaimed items offering a cost-effective way forward. And when it comes to dressing your bedroom in this down-to-earth decor, it’s not hard to uncover some charming features and accents that will see you resting your head in boho heaven. Rugs, curtains, duvets, lighting and accent pillows can all play their part in creating the ultimate boho style story. Trinkets like lanterns, antique candelabras, shabby chic throws and mystical artwork will add to the ambience. Pinterest is a great place let your imagination run wild before you bring your ideas to fruition.

A SOUTHERN EXPANSION

It’s going to be a big year for the Casa Construction team. With Wanaka’s population continuing to grow, Casa Construction has decided to start operating across the area, beginning early 2018.

C

asa will primarily focus on residential new builds, working with local architects and building teams to deliver beautifully crafted homes. Working in Wanaka has been a long-term dream for Casa Construction Director, Jeff Root. “A number of our clients either have holiday homes or are looking to move down that way. We’re delighted to be able to work with them on their new projects down there.” Both construction activity and costs are expected to continue to increase in the

broader Wanaka area, yet these challenges have not deterred the team. A number of innovations in supply chain, sourcing and team management are being considered to ensure the award-winning Casa Construction team can continue to exceed client and architect expectations. Jeff adds, “It’s exciting to be able to bring something a little different to the market. There are a number of good operators down there already. We’re looking forward to the challenge of delivering the Casa promise of being on-time and within

budget while maintaining the highest quality construction experience possible.” The Casa team will kick off its Wanaka venture with projects in Hawea and West Wanaka. The team will be led by Jeff who will commute fortnightly, as well as a lead construction manager on the ground. Casa Construction will continue operations in Christchurch alongside the new Wanaka venture. For more information, contact Jeff Root on 021 460 670 or go to our website www.casaconstructio.co.nz

is also ‘full steam ahead’ on client projects, driven by passion rather than need. Original and repeat clients have been waiting patiently for the peak of earthquake work to pass, so they can carry out alterations, extensions and new builds. Residential projects are core, from entry level, to large scale hillside architectural homes such as Kiteroa Terrace, pictured. But at any one time the company will be deeply involved in a great diversity of work, with current projects including recladding a university hostel and alterations to a funeral home. Weathertight homes are also a specialty. “We are excellent at solutions,” David says. “We are not into mass housing, but we are competitive with them.” There are no packages. “It’s bespoke to your needs, from end to end.” Your single point of contact is a trade qualified project manager who is experienced, personable, and both quality and service-driven. Low staff turnover is a source of pride – the team is highly skilled and dynamic, and loves new ventures and problem solving. “We assist and guide clients in a way that enables them to come out of their comfort zones.” The team loves “the delight in people’s faces, when they see what they have achieved”.

YEAR-ROUND OUTDOOR SPACES

Sleek, stylish and contemporary – louvre roofs not only look great but transform your space for year-round outdoor living.

L

ouvre Solutions’ product range includes motorised opening louvre roofs, elliptical sun louvres, privacy and security screens, gates, fences, chimney cowls, and bracket fixed/end fixed louvres. Providing shelter and privacy, while allowing for light, shade and airflow control, a constantly evolving selection of added value products ensures function, comfort and efficiency – whatever the season. From integrated heating and side screens to enclose the area, to vertical sun shades, side curtains and LED lights, the company has a commitment to ongoing product development. “Now is an ideal time to get your louvre roof installed, before winter arrives,” says owner Craig Rogers, who has significant experience in the architectural louvre industry. The custom-made louvre roof product, with bespoke features like powder coated colouring tailored to the client’s needs, is manufactured at the business’ own local factory. Proudly based in Canterbury, the company has agents around the South

Island, including representatives based in Nelson, Marlborough, South Canterbury, Wanaka, and Queenstown. “I work with our clients throughout the entire process for every project, from design to manufacturing and installation – this relationship is very important to us. I know

NOW IS AN IDEAL TIME TO GET YOUR LOUVRE ROOF INSTALLED, BEFORE WINTER ARRIVES. what works and what doesn’t, both from a practical and aesthetic perspective.” A customised, automated louvre roof over a patio, spa pool, or deck, or as a freestanding feature anywhere on a property, provides a space sheltered from

the elements. The product is a brilliant addition to homes and can be proactively planned as part of the design and build process, or retrofitted post-construction. With more than 10 years in the industry, the business’ reputation has been built on a solid foundation. Craig and his team pride themselves on their impressive portfolio of repeat and referred business, generated through word of mouth and a robust network of contacts, including independent builders, building companies, architects and landscape architects – all of whom recommend the company to potential clients. All products come with a 10-year warranty and attending to any adjustment needs that may follow is all part of the service, Craig says. “It’s about building a product that has not only been engineered correctly but also installed correctly. And it’s imperative for our clients to know they are dealing with an established and reputable company, for peace of mind and a stress-free experience.” Visit www.louvresolutions.co.nz for more information, or phone 0275 356 286. ecade after decade this style staple maintains its place on the ‘latest looks’ lists. Beloved for its timeless appeal and ‘dress up dress down’ versatility, it’s always on trend. But this shape-shifting chameleon has sidled its way into the home and according to the powers that be, adding a dash of denim is a sure-fire way to bring enduring style to any space. Much like its performance as a fashionable powerhouse, when it comes to homewares, denim offers a notquite-neutral alternative to all of those whites and greys, can play to a variety of aesthetics, and provides a sought-after splash of textural interest. With options in dark-wash, chambray, faded and even the well-worn look available, there is something to suit every style. So shop our inspirational look, or raid the wardrobe or thrift store to craft some clever creations all of your own.

Not so long ago, black and blue were considered a sartorial sin. Now, not only has this match-made in heaven pairing marched its way down the catwalk, but it’s equally marched its way into our homes and hearts. aking their cues from the fashion world, design darlings of the décor world have been taking this trend into the home, where it’s found its way into almost every room. Dark and moody in all the right ways, black and blue are a crowd favourite and for very good reason. But if you want to lighten the mood, consider marrying black with vivid tones of cobalt, teal and sapphire and lighter blues like robin’s egg and sky blue. So stay ahead of the style game with some creative combinations.

ith the weather now beginning its downward descent, it’s an opportune time to harness the power of colours and textiles to create the cosiest of winter retreats. Not only do leather and wood bring a natural warmth to the home, but they cleverly encapsulate the deliciously rich and earthy tones of autumn. With a versatility owing to their neutral aesthetic, both leather and wood work well with a variety of colours, including other neutrals. Make a powerful autumnal statement with a big new leather sofa or dip your toes in the water with some smaller scale accessories. Although leather may not bring the cuddly factor to your cushions or couches, paired with fluffy textural cushions and throws in deeper brown tones, it can make your space warm and welcoming. Wood on the other hand, lends itself exceptionally well to sidetables, cabinetry and lamps, though it can be incorporated on a smaller scale through ornaments and photo frames. Colour is a complex phenomenon and theories about its effect on our minds and emotions range across the scientific and artistic realms. Shop our look and you’ll quickly realise the power colour has to dramatically transform a space and create a warm winter retreat.

PRIME TIME FOR POOLS

“T

he busiest time is from September onwards, with people wanting their pool in by Christmas,” she says. “Pools can be put in all year round. Winter installs are very popular and allow for a norush, stress free time.” While the actual installation of a pool only takes four to five days, there are a number of other things to consider and plan. Julie and husband Warren are the owners of Lagoon Pools. It supplies most of the South Island with pools by ‘Leisure Pools’, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of composite fibreglass swimming pools. Julie and Warren will help with every stage of the planning and installation, if required. Council consents generally take at least 20 working days to secure. Landscaping can take time, especially when you consider designing the layout, choosing pavers and fencing and having them installed. It can be a lengthy process, so it pays to get started early. The Leisure Pools website – www.leisurepools.co.nz – has lots of information about the pools available, as does the Lagoon Pools site – www.lagoonpools.co.nz – which provides information about the accessories available to make your new pool even more enjoyable. Automatic cover systems and hidden covers are popular. Fountains and strip lighting can make your pool a focal point of your landscaping, even in the winter months. Contact Julie on 0800 92 72 82 or via the website.

Customer Satisfaction How do you rate?

As a businessperson, you’re always acutely aware of what’s required to maintain your personal and professional reputation, in addition to maintaining the goodwill of the public and your clients. Falling short on the delivery of what you promised is unacceptable, but it can nonetheless happen despite the best of intentions. It’s always confronting when you deal with a client’s disappointment and, with the power of social media, it’s important that you listen, learn and help – before matters get out of hand. Social media has an enormous ability to highlight issues, often whilst reducing a situation to only one (aggrieved) perspective. But nothing is ever that simple. In real estate, for instance, owners, purchasers, agents (whether listing or selling) and the companies they work for all have a stake in the outcome and a role in the proceedings which adds layers of potential misunderstanding. Recently, I found myself sitting with a family who had purchased a home. Their relationship with their sales consultant was extremely

positive, but they were disappointed at some of the actions taken by the vendor of the home they had purchased. Unfortunately, on settlement, the home was no longer in pristine condition. It wasn’t clean or tidy, gardens were overgrown and fixtures had been removed, leaving unsightly holes in the walls. The ‘dream home’ dream was being shattered, and they wanted to talk to someone about their feelings. With care and resourcefulness, all the problems were able to be addressed, but it made me think about how easily you can lose a valued client. Dealing with issues openly and promptly is always ideal, and usually results in the best outcome, but there are several alternative responses I have noticed – and personally been on the receiving end of – when it comes to client dissatisfaction.

ahead of facts, this approach tilts the situation toward the subjective, and usually the opportunity for a compromise or a solution is lost. It can also be extremely expensive, not just financially but mentally. So, it’s probably worth remembering that although the client may not always be right, he or she is always worth listening to. And to those serial perpetrators of poor customer service: front up, listen up and, if you are in the wrong, own up! Finally a nod to the month of March. I call it a month of madness as we move with strength and focus to the end of the financial year. To the Gold team regardless of how you finish I know you are always pushing to be the best.

The ‘I’ll ignore it and it will go away’ method. This doesn’t require elaboration. As a tactic, it’s foolish, irritating and more than likely going to make the problem bigger.

Polly.

Another response to avoid is the ‘pitch battle’. By putting feelings, hearsay or guesswork

ith some traditional textures such as velvet and timber following this hue into the homewares realm, why not weave this natureinspired hue into your interior palette. After all, it’s quite the gem. When it comes to sprucing up your interiors, this heavenly hue in all its green glory, has never looked so good. And, when it comes to colour psychology, it adds visual credence to the ‘green movement’, with its reported ability to improve selfesteem, reduce anxiety and heighten awareness of one’s surroundings. e derive comfort from attempting to qualify or quantify certain facts, particularly when it relates to aspects which are beyond one’s immediate control. The ‘long tail’ of the regional rebuild being one such, rather significant, example. What was, in its ‘recovery’ stages, a test of our innate fight or flight responses, has now in an official capacity given way to the ‘rebuild’ phase, a phase one could easily argue required more stamina, both personally and professionally, as we waited with baited breath for the new places and spaces to come to fruition. Yet the metamorphosis now visible at street level is palpable, as our architects reimagine a cosmopolitan city that is perhaps shorter on stature, but certainly not on personality. Christchurch is full of creative, ambitious businesses, developers and architects who are making their own mark on the rebuilding city, with a developing physical typology that is nothing short of distinct. And yet, at the same time, it’s not a complete architectural about-face, as those responsible for this metamorphosis work hard to marry our built heritage with contemporary creations, offering an exemplary model of what is possible when ingenuity and innovation are the motivating drivers. As our new building facades play with clever new angles, colours and materials, our heritage icons make features of their ornate and rather elaborate detailing, with historic identities such as Stranges Lane and the Isaac Theatre Royal rubbing architectural shoulders with the likes of The Terraces and the Deloitte building. Each and every one of these distinct developments has its own story and yet each plays an equally important role in telling the new story of Christchurch.

city is a brand. Just like any great brand, we need to be clear on who we are and what we stand for. We need to be aspirational to inspire bold thinking to attract great talent and interest in our city. ChristchurchNZ are in the midst of redefining our city’s identity. As they work with various stakeholders, it’s clear innovation is key to our city’s brand. Innovation has always been in our blood with business pioneers like Angus Tait (Tait Communications), Bill Hamilton (CWF Hamilton) and Sir Gil Simpson (Jade Software) leading the way. I am privileged to see outstanding innovation and creativity every day. The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well. In addition to more established companies, we are lucky to have many young, passionate entrepreneurs making their mark locally and internationally. Young companies like Banqer, Ethique and Corvecto reinforce that innovation, creativity and experimentation stretches across generations. In February, Christchurch launched Yoogo Share – the first in the Southern Hemisphere. We also heard a great international tech company has chosen to base their APAC office here, choosing Christchurch over Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland. We are on the right track to redefining ourselves as a place that embraces and nurtures open-minds, experimentation, creativity and innovation. We have an exciting opportunity to reposition our city and must ensure the vision is bold, yet ensure we are able to deliver on the promise. Businesses and entrepreneurs must continue to be supported by a strong, connected ecosystem, and local and central government policy must nurture an innovation-led economy.

I

t’s not often that you get involved in a construction project where the aim is to keep almost everything the same, but after 13 months of work the fully restored Victoria Square was reopened to the public this month. No major work had been carried out on Victoria Square since the 1980s, so time and the earthquakes had taken a bit of a toll, with cracked pavers and ponding proving hazardous. A significant 40,000 man-hours, 2100 metres of cabling, 800 metres of pipe and 170,000 pavers later, the space has been returned to its former glory, with wider paths and additional lighting making Victoria Square more accessible. Australasia’s first illuminated electric fountain, the 87-year-old Bowker Fountain, is also back to its colourful best, with new pumps and lights. Additional features like the brass and concrete Kanakana table recognise the site and the city’s bi-cultural heritage. All this effort went into Victoria Square because it is somewhat of a central city linchpin. It sits along the river promenade that’s currently under construction, its neighbours are the Performing Arts Precinct and the Town Hall and people using the Convention Centre’s meeting rooms will be gazing out onto Victoria Square every time their eyes wander. This restoration ensures the best of Christchurch is on show for anyone in the central city. So, on a sunny day, why not come grab a Vanilla Ice, take a seat by the Bowker Fountain and reacquaint yourself with this restored space.

ew Zealand was recently named as the most prosperous country in the world by The Legatum Institute. The London based think tank has recently released its annual global Prosperity Index for 2018, a huge survey that ranks the most prosperous nations. New Zealand now outranks Finland – a country we are often highlighted as performing poorly against. Since the index was first founded in 2007, our lowest place was fourth and we have taken out the top spot seven times. Given recent newspaper headlines outlining our childhood poverty statistics, the housing crisis and rivers we can’t swim in, this came as a surprise to me. So, I did a little more research and thinking on this topic. The Legatum Institute doesn’t view prosperity as being just the amount of money that a country has. It compared 104 variables in developing the rankings, including personal freedom, natural environment and social capital. Further reading of their website provides more detail. It’s well worth a look – just visit https://ind.pn/2Ex2S0j. When reviewing these results, it seems to me that all of us have a role to play to ensure that our collective prosperity is spread more evenly. We are doing ok, but we can do better. Smart central government policy and investment are obviously key, but these wheels take time to turn. In contrast, a nimble, grassroots-engaged, factbased charity or social enterprise can make an impact quickly, if it is well supported.

hristchurch’s rebuild is an opportunity to transform our city and leave a legacy for future generations, something which requires public and private organisations to partner together. Exploring these new ways of working together has long-lasting, farreaching benefits for all of us. I’m really pleased that Regenerate Christchurch has now signed agreements with both the University of Canterbury and Lincoln University. These will enable new and innovative opportunities for research, teaching and learning, particularly around the environmental and social regeneration, and ecology of the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor Regeneration Area – the former red zone. We’ll share resources and knowledge, and collaborate with two of New Zealand’s most recognised universities to create new learning experiences for local and international students, communities and visitors. We’d like to establish a world-leading living laboratory, where we learn, experiment and research; testing and creating new ideas and ways of living. It’s also an opportunity to demonstrate how to adapt to the challenges and opportunities presented by natural hazards, climate change and a river’s floodplain. Long-term, we want to see Christchurch recognised as a leader in developing technology for communities to adapt to climate change, and see an increase in science and technology-based jobs in our city. These partnerships between Regenerate Christchurch and tertiary providers will provide opportunities for staff and students, such as trialling ideas and projects that could also lead to commercial opportunities, involvement in internships, community engagement, research, and investigating the long-term impact of regeneration.

A

ccording to the 2017 report ‘Future demand for construction workers’, released by the MBIE, construction investment growth is set to peak in 2020 and increase the requirements for construction-related occupations until at least late 2022. This means employers are facing an increasing skills shortage and having to alter the ways they recruit and retain the best staff. Businesses within commercial or residential construction now have the opportunity to grow. The issue stopping them is being able to get the right staff members to take on those projects and deliver quality work. There’s no area where there’s an abundance of staff, from labour to carpenters to subcontractors such as plumbers or electricians, right through to site-based staff like site managers and supervisors, quantity surveyors, project managers and site engineers. Every single area of every project is very difficult to recruit, making it hard for people to fill up their business with top-notch people. We do look to Australia, which is obviously fairly close by and has a similar way of building, but we do a lot of work with attracting people from South Africa and the UK as well, and we have also sourced candidates from the US. Retention is probably one of the biggest focuses any [construction] employer has at the moment. People are moving much more frequently than they have done in the past and that’s because it’s so competitive a lot of employers are looking to attract people from other businesses who are already trained in a similar method of construction.

O

ne of the biggest remaining challenge of our rebuild is the ongoing mental health impacts of the earthquakes – especially for our kids. As well as the initial trauma, there have also been the years of slow grinding recovery, which has been especially hard for the people still stuck in broken homes and battling EQC or their insurance companies. That is why there has been a 93 percent increase in demand for mental health services for young people in Canterbury since 2011. This is something that our Government is committed to taking action on. It is why Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced we will give every child in Canterbury and Kaikoura access to a mental health professional through their school. We will spend $28 million hiring a range of mental health professionals from counsellors to psychiatrists to work alongside schools and teachers to help our local kids get the support they deserve. The roll out will start in the east of Christchurch and Hornby and will be completed by mid-next year. This policy has been designed alongside experts at the CDHB. They have been some of the unsung heroes of the recovery, providing mental health for people who need it most. By working in partnership with local experts, we have been better able to understand the needs of Canterbury kids, and have come up with a plan that I believe will make a huge difference for our young people.

ne of so many wonderful new builds in the city, the very public yet very personally passionate, process of bringing The Terrace to life gives it a talismanic feel, symbolising the strength and confidence, leadership and faith it has taken to get to this point.

Forged in the fire of Antony Gough’s vision, The Terrace, a glamourous and aesthetically pleasing precinct featuring innovative, thoughtful design, has brought this city section to life again, with twenty different hospitality environments open with minimum hours of 11am – 11 pm seven days, plus commercial space. It wouldn’t be out of line to describe Antony Gough as the King of the rebuild. We talk to Antony about his milestone. The Terrace has been a labour of love for you, how does it feel to have all that hard work and dedication now coming to fruition with the new bars now starting to open? A huge relief and very exciting seeing it all come together. How do you think the overall rebuild is going? The private sector is going very well, though it has taken longer than any of us would have expected. The Anchor Projects however need to get a hurry along. What are some of your favourite buildings or developments – both old and new? The Terraces – particularly the wooden building – The Arts Centre, Deloitte

House, The Crossing with its variety, Stranges Lane and the Bus Exchange. What do you see as some of the challenges facing the city as we move forward? I worry that all the cycle lanes may make travel by cars, trucks and buses too difficult. The Anchor Projects and the CBD housing are progressing too slowly. What do you think we’ve done well at as a city throughout the rebuild process? The Avon River precinct and Earthquake Memorial are excellent! Getting our sewerage and water systems back to normal as well. What do you love about Christchurch and, as a developer, what makes you choose to stay here? Christchurch is a city of huge opportunities. A brand new CBD surrounded by an exciting housing population, it is now getting a real sense of vibrancy. What does the rest of 2018 have in store for you? I have a car parking building to build and then I need to bed down The Terrace Precinct. This won’t happen by accident, it needs lots of planning and hard work behind the scenes.

THE REAL SOUL OF THE CITY IS ALWAYS A FEW STREETS BACK.

Its portfolio includes a rubber mouldings factory which is now a coffee shop and roastery (The Anchorage) and a grocery distribution centre turned bar and eatery (Welles Street). The company is also repurposing six former industrial buildings in Welles Street. The complex, which will be home to a mix of artisan businesses, is named The Welder after another long-standing tenant. Stringer says buildings from the 1950s and 1960s are just as important to Christchurch’s history as those marked with the heritage stamp. “The easy option is to bulldoze them and start again, but as the city grows and fills in we’ll just never get an opportunity to get these kinds of buildings back. They are actually going to be our future heritage buildings – as crazy as it sounds. They will be very iconic amongst the sea of glass.” The Anchorage, Welles Street, Supreme Supreme and The Welder are all part of an area of town Box 112 has branded ‘South Town’, “an area of the city that has always had more grit and intrigue to it,” Stringer says. Box 112 is also developing Christchurch’s five-storey former Public Trust Building, which has been awarded a $1.9m heritage grant from the Christchurch City Council. “We are always looking to partner with interesting local and national businesses that are looking for an authentic and unique space to leverage off.”

he company, which buys, fits out and leases buildings in Christchurch, is all about tackling the city’s ‘too hard basket’ when it comes to development, says partner James Stringer. “Buildings are not just spaces, they have memories attached to them.” Stringer joined Box 112 in 2016 after his colleagues Sam Rofe and Rob Farrell set it up a year prior. As a director of the Christchurch Heritage Trust, he was excited to steer away from new builds and tackle projects others might overlook. “When you go overseas to any major city, you’ll often find the real soul of the city is always a few streets back – it’s the places the tourists hunt out, it’s the places the locals go. “We can’t go down the road of a utopian city, we have to remember that grit and intrigue is what makes a city. Pockets, things for everyone.” Stringer says he, Rofe and Farrell look at some of Christchurch’s less-thandesirable buildings, including those historically used for industrial purposes. “We hunt buildings that are really well located and have a story. Some of them are pretty tricky, they’re often tied up in insurance disputes. We really admire people who have held on to them for so long,” he says. Box 112 finds investors for each development and co-owns the buildings.

CONCRETING CLEVER

Alan Judd is owner of two thriving Christchurch companies operating in commercial kerbing and infill concrete – KerbworxNZ, and Canterbury Kerb and Concrete.

K

erbing is in Alan’s blood – he took over the business established by his father in 1965. With more than 60 collective years of experience in the current team, all areas of concrete are covered. KerbworxNZ primarily works for corporate clients on large roading projects or subdivisions. Last year, KerbworxNZ laid in excess of 50,000m of kerbing. Currently employing 12 staff, KerbworxNZ has the capacity to lay more, and can operate all over the South Island having already worked in Blenheim,

Queenstown, Timaru and Oamaru. Recent projects include the Flemington subdivision in Lincoln and a major current Christchurch development, the Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub. In 2016, Alan purchased Canterbury Kerb and Concrete, enabling him to offer a greater package of services to his existing clients. With a domestic as well as a commercial focus, Canterbury Kerb and Concrete offers excavation, kerbing, and concrete infill using colour and stencilling. of difference – a superior alternative to cobbles and pavers. “CKC offers a ‘onestop-shop’ for all our clients with full concrete packages.” A recent project highlight for Canterbury Kerb and Concrete was the New Brighton Pools complex. Hardscaping concrete was completed under a very tight schedule with our clients HEB Construction. Alan says “this project has been a flagship pour for the company – a success from start to finish”. Look out for the next stage – hot pools in late 2018.

he fires, which broke out in February 2017, burned 1600 hectares of land on the Port Hills, claimed the life of firefighter Steve Askin, destroyed eleven homes and tore through the Christchurch Adventure Park, forcing its closure after just eight weeks of being open. Christchurch Adventure Park General Manager, Anne Newman, says at lot of hard work has gone into getting the park up and running again. “For those staff who were working at the park on that day it was obviously a stressful and traumatic experience to go through. Many staff then lost their jobs following the fires and, for those who did remain, it was ten months of incredibly hard work to get things prepared for a re-opening.” Sales and Marketing Manager, Sheena Crawford, says the facilities continue to grow. “We have recently re-opened two more of our trails, so in a biking sense we are getting closer and closer to our former capacity and are aiming to quickly grow beyond that. We have had over 40,000 people through the park in the first two months; 30,000 of those going up the chair and over a thousand enjoying the ziplines. “There is no doubt that there are still challenges for us to overcome as we continue to recover, but we are stoked to be back in business and seeing so many people out enjoying what the park has to offer again.”

HOUSE ATOP A HILL

T

he stonework goes from the entrance exterior, right the way through the centre of the house and then back outside again. A twosided fireplace utilises this stone feature, enhancing ambiance and the feature’s ingenuity further. With four bedrooms, two bathrooms, three car garaging and every other conceivable essential, this home is clad in a mix of plaster, cedar and stone. “The team enjoyed the unique challenges and certain level of difficulty a hill build presents. It is always satisfying doing a build with excellent high-end products. The homeowners are very happy with the final product and my team is proud of the result,” says Hamish McLeish of McLeish Construction. This architectural home was designed by Peter Hawtin and completed within nine months. Licensed Building Practitioner Hamish McLeish has 20 years building experience. A family operated business, it has a reliable and enthusiastic team based predominantly in Canterbury and can cater to projects further afield. “We take immense pride in the quality of workmanship and attention to detail in every aspect of our work and offer a ten-year guarantee. Our projects are completed on time and within budget by a team of qualified builders and apprentices.”

Further hubs will be added in April, including The Crossing, Ara Institute, the University of Canterbury and the Lyttelton Community Centre. By then there will be 100 battery electric vehicles at 10 or more hubs across the city.

THIS IS AN EXCITING NEW TRANSPORT SERVICE POWERED BY ELECTRICITY.

ELECTRIC CAR SHARING SCHEME

Christchurch is now home to New Zealand’s first fully battery-powered electric car sharing scheme. Developed by Christchurch City Council and run by Yoogo Share, the scheme lets people hire electric vehicles at different points in the city.

Y

oogo Share General Manager Kirsten Corson says it is the biggest deployment of electric cars in New Zealand, with Hyundai Ioniq and BMWi3

vehicles now available at several hubs in the city, including Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu and Christchurch International Airport.

“This is an exciting new transport service powered by electricity that is largely generated from renewable energy,” says CCC Resource Efficiency Manager Kevin Crutchley, who was Project Manager for the scheme. “The result is a service with zero tail pipe emissions that will both reduce our city’s greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, which will have positive health benefits for the residents of Christchurch.” Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel says she is proud that Christchurch is the first city in New Zealand, and one of the few cities internationally, that has such a service. “It’s a smart and sustainable way for businesses and for local residents to get around town and I’m excited to see the service grow. [It] will deliver improved environmental and health outcomes and help the Council achieve its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.”

The ultimate, inner city lifestyle

1 Conference Street, Christchurch Contact Chris Lewis, Harcourts Holmwood M: 0274 050 287 P: 03 355 6116

With a rapidly emerging Christchurch CBD featuring an exciting mix of new retail and hospitality offerings, there is no better time to purchase in the inner city.

N

umber 1 Conference Street offers buyers a rare opportunity to secure a parcel of prime real estate in the heart of the prestigious Victoria neighbourhood, just a short stroll from all the excitement of the city centre, and with the upmarket Victoria Street Precinct, and Hagley Park, right on its doorstep. The owner has put together an exciting proposition, with concept plans and resource consents already in place to build an exclusive, standalone 470sqm, four-level, five-bedroom private residence on the site. With properties in this exclusive area selling in the multi-millions, this is a unique opportunity to purchase an iconic parcel of land and build this extraordinary home for much less than you would pay for it already completed and on the open market. The well thought out design of the home (created by the owner and Don Donnithorne Architects) would suit a range of potential buyers, from large, blended or multi-generational families, to professionals seeking work-from-home options, and retirees wanting plenty of room for family and friends to visit.

Luxury features include a 2.7m high gallery space on the ground floor, which could be closed off at either end for potential use as a workspace, gallery, or contemplative place for yoga or exercise. Four bedrooms and two bathrooms are also located on this level, which has internal entry to the garage and access to the lift that connects all four levels of the home. Three spacious living spaces are connected to a European inspired kitchen on the first floor, along with a secluded master suite with incredible private facilities. The pièce de résistance of the design is the spectacular roof terrace, with a lap pool, sauna, spa, pavilion, outdoor kitchen and barbecue area. It is the ultimate entertainers’ space. You’ll never want to leave home! A 2.4m high basement with bathroom and kitchenette is a valuable extra space, which could be set up as a home theatre, gym, games room, workspace, a student apartment, or even as luxury Airbnb accommodation. Fully engineered drawings and a geotechnical investigation of the site are also complete, allowing a lucky purchaser to progress

immediately to full working drawings and construction. There are very few opportunities to develop a large, standalone home like this so close to the CBD. All the hard work has been done, and you could be living in your sophisticated new inner city pad before the end of 2018! Are you ready to be part of creating a future iconic architectural home in a class of its own, which will be enjoyed by you and the generations to come?

MADE LOVED CHRIS BEER ARCHITECTURAL BUILDERS

TO BE

Chris Beer Architectural Builders builds exquisite homes. The company has a profile publication full of images of stunning properties to showcase its passion for architecturally-designed homes. But even more than the actual houses it builds, the team at Chris Beer cherishes the relationships established with clients and the trust and empathy that develops throughout a building process.

“W

e take immense pride in crafting homes for them that will be real homes and that they will love to live in,” Chris Beer says. “We work by the mantra ‘crafted by hand; made to be loved’ and that is what we deliver.” One of Chris Beer Architectural Builders’ latest projects – a 480sqm home on the Mona Vale Stream – encapsulates every facet of the company’s operating philosophy. “We have walked each step of the path of this build process along with our clients, from the insurance claim, to the house design by Noordanus Architects, to the build itself and then to the handing

106 March 15, 2018 Metropol

over of the keys. It’s been a two-year journey made easier through open and transparent communication. What we are most proud of is that our clients are simply delighted with their home and know it will be a pleasure to live in for years to come.” The Fendalton home is a masterpiece of both exterior and interior design, making features of different materials and custom-made fixtures and fittings. The house is clad in bluestone, copper and composite metal. A double-height entrance way and copper front door make a truly impressive statement and is just a tempter for the beauty of the interior

where attention to detail is everything. Many of the special elements of the home have been created as one-off pieces, designed by the architects, created by Chris Beer Architectural Builders to the highest of standards. The outcome of the build is breathtaking. “You don’t get a second chance with a project of this calibre. It has to be right. Of course there were challenges, but our strength as a team is the way we deal with these, talking through any issues and possible solutions with the clients and keeping the communication channels open. The result – happy clients.”

MIKE GREER HOMES

A STAGE LIKE NO O Nothing grants a building company the stage to illustrate their flair better than a showhome. The very stylish designs of the two new Mike Greer Homes showhomes in Prestons Park, Marshlands exhibit an endless supply of fabulous ideas that can be implemented into most of the company’s home plans. By Allison O’Neill

T

he single-storey home at 21 Prestons Park Drive is impressive. Designed for luxury living, the choice of colours and designer wallpaper is an interior feature that manages to be both bold and subtle, simultaneously. The bathroom is fit for a goddess. The way the shape of the bath complements the shape of the room and window is no accident, nor is the luxurious vibe provided by the marble look tile you notice as you step up to the raised bathing platform. 108 March 15, 2018 Metropol

The kitchen is another focal point, with Velux skylights in the raised ceiling over a waterfall kitchen benchtop. “The kitchens in these showhomes are very high-end and offer inspiration to clients who want to build their absolute dream home,” Mike Greer Homes Sales Manager John Callaghan says. The 226m2 home has three double bedrooms, a family bathroom (that also features the eye-catching Velux skylights), ensuite, office, two living rooms and a

double garage – all the space for modern family life. Next door at number 19, the 275m2 twostorey home is designed to maximise site and sun, featuring four double bedrooms, three bathrooms, internal laundry and double garage. Carefully designed to be spacious without feeling overwhelmingly large, the open plan layout of living spaces creates the heart of the home. The exterior plaster cladding (Integra Facade System in white) on number 19

OTHER PROJECT PARTNERS

was completed by Resene Construction Systems, with the Resene team playing a significant role, given the nature of the project: a two-storey dwelling with over-roof areas and multiple claddings. “The homes look very sharp,” Resene Construction Systems National Sales Manager Simon Petrie says. “The recess plaster features two gable ends, with acute angles and a clean and sleek finish. The contrasting dark cedar shows the best of both products in a fantastic combination. We enjoy working closely with Mike Greer Homes. Their front-line communication is of a very high standard. Their design team and project managers have a wealth of knowledge to ensure a high standard of work is undertaken and met for their clients, meaning our products end up showcased beautifully. We review all details on projects collectively to ensure expectations are exceeded.” The tile supply for both showhomes was done by Garey Burgess of Giovanni Tiles, who works closely with the Mike Greer Homes inhouse colour consultant Haley Cleine. They discuss trends and designs while having a play with new products to see what will work best for each project. “Haley sees the bigger picture, so once she is happy with the concept I work to her vision and provide solutions, sourcing products especially,” Garey says. “I travel internationally personally selecting tiles. Because Mike Greer Homes is my biggest customer I keep them in mind when sourcing product and immediately introduce Haley to the new top of the range tiles that I know work well with their customer base. We have a reciprocal loyalty and I know the entire team. Both companies receive great benefits from our long-term relationship.” Dyers Road ITM supplied the building products and worked with the design team on both projects to ensure they met council criteria and the design briefs. “Our close working relationship with Mike Greer Homes means we are involved in the design process, which in turn leads

to higher quality end products,” Dyers Road ITM Commercial Sales and Business Development Manager Andrew Reeves says. “After more than a decade working together, the relationship has flourished to a point where we work not as supplier/ client, but as a team – a partnership to achieve high quality homes built in a timely fashion while still meeting the competitive pricing demands of the both the market and individual clients.” These homes feature traditional design methods, as well as new panelised technology, the results of which Andrew is very proud of, his favourite feature being the cedar claddings on both houses. “They are eye-catching and look incredible,” he says. The high-spec kitchen and walk in pantry in number 19 is courtesy of Misco Joinery, which supplied Hafele European hardware with soft close drawers and powder coated handles. “The cabinetry has lasered edges which removes the glue line and makes them very smooth and ultra-watertight,” Penny Abell of Misco Joinery says. “This is a standard measure for all cabinetry we supply to Mike Greer Homes.” A launch party for the Mike Greer Homes sales team and project managers was held at number 19 to introduce them to the new line products from Misco, Hafele Hardware and Grass Componentry Range – such is the depth of knowledge Mike Greer Homes likes the team to have. Penny’s favourite part of the kitchen? “The size of the benchtop – all that entertainment space, people seem to be going for larger benchtops more and more,” she says. It is obvious why Mike Greer Homes consistently wins awards at the Master Builder House of the Year: it gets the details right. The company’s long-term industry relationships fuel high-quality results and there is synergy on every project. John says of those involved in the project, “They are all fantastic, great quality, service and great installation teams” – and it shows in the finish of these breathtaking homes.

IT’S SOMETHING OF AN ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECE OF MIXED MATERIALS.

C

ook Brothers Construction is proud to have been the main contractor to carry out the work on such a significant development. The project was just the type of large undertaking that this construction company thrives on with its logistical challenges and strong architectural vision. The four-storey building comprises 2,000 square metres of commercial and retail space, topped off by a loft style apartment and balcony. A hanging garden in the front of the building is a stand out feature of the project, bringing greenery to the modern façade. “The building certainly makes a dynamic feature on the Cashel Mall streetscape with its stunning seventeen metre glazed frontage to the mall,” Cook Brothers Construction Project Manager Tony Morley says. “It’s something of an architectural masterpiece of mixed materials from basalt panels and

frameless glass shop fronts to a large living wall of plants giving colour and vibrancy to the modern industrial design. It certainly was an interesting, enjoyable and rewarding build to work on and it was finished on time and to programme.” The developer Denis Sunderland had a property on the site prior to the earthquakes and had a vision to rebuild there as soon as possible. However, with the requirement for masterplanned proposals for the retail precinct it took four years for work to commence. “During the construction process we worked closely with Cequent Projects, the mall operators and the Christchurch City Council to minimise disruption to the surrounding businesses while still keeping on track with the agreed programme on a tight site with limited access,” Tony says. “All credit is due to the build team on site whose extra efforts achieved this great result.”

PUREPODS

a luxuriously

SMALL FOOTPRINT By Rhonda Mitchell

“We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us,” Churchill once said, and Canterbury’s pioneering company, PurePods, is leading from the front to ensure we are in the best possible shape.

H

umans’ stress response reduces just moments after entering a green space, and the term ‘biophilia’ is defined as the inherent human inclination to affiliate with nature. Glass eco-cabins PurePods are the essence of biophilic design, incorporating natural materials, natural light, vegetation, nature and views and other experiences of the natural world into a minimalist luxury cabin.

112 March 15, 2018 Metropol

A sojourn in a PurePod is a unique, lifestyle experience. Stephanie Hassall, CEO of PurePods says the twin goals of the company are to have the smallest ecological footprint possible, while providing luxury and 360-degree views. Privacy is key: each PurePod is located on private land, with fabulous views well away from all human activities. The experience starts as soon as you pull off the main road and leave the world behind. From your carpark, it is a 10 to 30-minute walk (depending on which PurePod you have chosen) with your overnight bag, through an indigenous nature trail. Once there, native planting is visible under you, the sky above you and the views through three walls. There are five individual PurePods located in secluded and beautiful parts of Canterbury, and they are looking for new locations. Stephanie says the first PurePod was built on site with most materials carried in on foot. Over the last 18 months they have developed a more prefabricated system. “It’s like a giant Meccano set, with as small an environmental footprint as possible.” The buildings are PurePods’ trademarked and patented design, including the in-floor heating system set into the all-glass floor. Of course, PurePods use the expertise of local craftsmen, and from the beginning Coombes Sheet Metal and Fabrication has supported Purepods’ innovative designs by constructing components for the water and heating systems, and weatherproofing panelling, enabling it to perform in an exposed and remote natural environment. The newest PurePod is at Pōhue, located high above Port Levy, where the view is rolling tussocks, down to the bay and out to the Pacific Ocean. Rock Formations (named by the original WWII Veteran owner’s Greek bride), known to climbers as The Acropolis and The Monument, are in front of and behind you. Choosing which PurePod to book online is the most taxing part of the experience. The PurePods are identical, but each setting is unique: mountain, sea, bush, winery, and the seasons bring further variation: snow views, or golden grasses? You can book the next available PurePod, or a specific one, or why not PurePod-hop and try them all! PROJECT PARTNERS Pure Pods Accommodation Ph: 021-685-022 Web: www.purepods.com

TINY HOUSE

A tiny house currently under construction.

OUTSIDE THE BOX Annelies Zwaan met David Bar when she was living in a tiny house of her own making. Not a crammed flat like most students, but a beautiful little log cabin she had created as a response to rising housing costs.

hen she enrolled in full time study, the pair moved in together and Annelies sold her tiny house. And, when that tiny house sold for more than her reserve price, she set about building another one to move back into, creating the ultimate part time job she could do around study. “With the amount of interest she had, I realised there was quite a gap in the market for these unique homes and that became my inspiration,” David says. “It was very outside of the box, with lots of character and personality, which really goes well with a tiny house.” David joined forces with talented Austrian carpenter, Florian Angerer to meet demand for their tiny houses, with construction on number two commencing in September 2017. However, with Florian and David working full time in other jobs, it was slow going. Early this year, they sold the second tiny house, providing the capital for the third, and enabling the two men to focus on the business full time. “Our tiny houses are built on a trailer with steel framing, so people naturally make the comparison to a caravan. These are about as far removed from a caravan as possible and that’s been important to us. They are like log cabins that are warm and enjoyable to live in.” For more information visit www.flowhomes.co.nz or email flowhomesnz@gmail.com.
