EDWARDS JOHANN By Kate Pierson
heir latest exhibition Double Agents – A Network that Never Sleeps is a tribute to all of the above. On show at 50 Works Gallery at 50 London Street in Lyttelton, the work of these visual storytellers is a catalyst for curiosity. Reflecting on the sentiment expressed through their work, the artists state, “It is on the seam of things that most of our works develop and evolve; this seam is a point of connection, but also a space of friction, tension and inevitable fragility. For us this territory reflects a basic human condition...to connect, work, play and test the space we inhabit in order to grow...and deal with crisis.” Having both enjoyed widely celebrated careers, their collaborative work interweaves drawing, painting, performative activities, video and installation with photography. They adopt a mixed media and mixed methodology approach to their projects and ideas come to life in what is described as a “process based research lab”. In 2016 they were the Supreme Winners of the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Award, and in 2017, they received a Highly Commended Award in the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award. Edwards+Johann’s major exhibition, Rebels, Knights and Other Tomorrows with the Christchurch Art Gallery Outer Spaces Projects in 2014 was featured in the CAG Bulletin with an article Thieves in the Attic by Sally Blundell. For further information on their practice, go to www.edwardsjohann.com. Visit the gallery online at www.50worksgallery.com. Gallery hours are Thursday and Friday from 2pm–4pm and Saturday, 11am–4pm.
It takes courage and creative conviction to lean into the unknown. Artists Edwards+Johann embrace the abstract and are pioneers of investigating imperfection – they pursue the unpolished, the uneasy, the unseen, the untold and the unfinished.

Min and Sue have been busy lining up artists for Min’s opening at the Arts Centre in March 2017. LIVING AN
EXTRAORDINARY LIFE By Kate Pierson
A natural-born innovator, Bridget talks to Metropol about leading a life that has seen her in the company of fashion heavy-weights like Karl Lagerfeld and André Leon Talley and why Magpie Style was the next step in an already highly decorated career.
You have had a remarkable career in fashion and publishing – was this always an ambition for you? When I was at university, I wanted to be a photo-journalist, but was approached for the editor’s role of a teen magazine shortly after. Looking back, I’m sure it was because I was a cheap hire in that I could do the interviews, style and photograph the talent at the same time. I remember doing a cover shoot with Billie Piper and doing just that. Her people thought it was all a bit bizarre, as she was such a big star at the time.
Bridget wears Paula Ryan jacket and basque pleat pants.
T
here are few who can say they have walked the halls of fashion bibles like Harpers Bazaar, Cleo and Cosmopolitan as a publishing director. Bridget Hope, founder of personal fashion showroom Magpie Style, not only successfully navigated this extraordinary path for herself, but even more impressively excelled in the international publishing industry while her integrity and humility remained intact.
Having been raised by two very successful parents, how have you sought to forge your own identity? My parents started Fashion Quarterly in the 80s out of our garage loft in Idris road. They would work around the clock in that little loft and everything they made was earned by their own hard work. So, I learnt that if you put your head down and worked hard then you would get rewarded for your efforts. As kids, we always had to work for our money. I was a dishwasher and waited tables through uni, worked as a photographer’s assistant, cleaned houses and ran my own little car-washing racket on the weekends in our street. My twenties were then spent in 70-hour work weeks as an editor pretty much from the get go. I never did a gap year or backpack around Europe like my friends did, but I don’t regret it for a minute. It was basically head down after leaving school. Publishing can be brutal when you are working with a miniscule team, but it does teach you the ropes fast. As for forging your own identity, I think this comes from being good at something yourself over time. Growing up I knew that I was lucky to be surrounded by some very smart people and I am grateful for the opportunities it gave me.
Guys! It’s time to propose Avoid that frustrating mall experience and create a ring at the price you choose She will know a ring from Kennett Crafted Jewels says

What has been the most significant milestone in your career to date? Working as the publishing director for Harper’s Bazaar Singapore and going to New York for meetings in the Hearst Tower. Standing in that lobby with my little visitor badge was one of those rare “I have arrived” moments. It was very special to be surrounded by the best editors and publishers in the world. When you find yourself in that position, you really have to bring your A-game. I was quite star-struck meeting Glenda Bailey and Carol Smith from Harper’s Bazaar US for the first time. It was also pretty thrilling to have Karl Lagerfeld within arm’s-reach at a Chanel cruise show. I remember looking over at a colleague who was sitting next to André Leon Talley from US Vogue and I had to pinch myself. Your new venture, Magpie Style, is a personal fashion showroom – what makes it different or unique? The rise of online shopping has made the whole retail experience very impersonal. It has given us more choice, but it has reduced the personalised experience. I developed Magpie Style out of a desire to create a shopping experience for women to stop and catch their breath for an hour or two and focus on themselves – with some genuine advice on hand. It is a shopping environment that focuses wholly on a women’s personal experience, where I can help them find the perfect pair of pants, a great work outfit or even just slowly contribute to their wardrobe over time in a meaningful way. It’s a different philosophy than just going out shopping. The showroom has been carefully designed in the style of a very feminine oversized dressing room. It is fully stocked and operates like a shop – except you get the special privilege of having the whole shop and a personal shopper all to yourself. We also have an online store, for those who can’t make it to the showroom. This will also act as a research tool for those wanting to see a slice of what we have. I have tried to make the website as personal as possible by giving styling and sizing notes to each individual garment. It’s a hassle to have to send something back, so I’m keen to make the experience as seamless as possible for customers.
Bridget wears Paula Ryan long navy vest and cigarette pants.
What is your own personal style and what role does style play in communicating a personal identity? I am a bit of a Magpie in that I am drawn to beautiful things – which is a shared thread in most women. My base wardrobe is full of quality black and navy basics which I style up with colour and prints. I love a print – but you have to be careful with prints. Patricia Field, costume designer for Sex & The City once said, “once you wear a statement print, it’s kind of done”. So, I try to buy prints that are not too definitive of a single designer or season. What does a day in the life of Bridget Hope look like? My children jump into bed with us at about 7am (unless they are already there) and it’s generally a coordinated effort to get everyone to the breakfast table. I try to do some exercise with my husband – a walk or weights at home. Client appointments start at 10am which takes me through to around 5ish. A glass of chardonnay is poured and then some downtime spent with the kids. Dinner with husband is either together, or not – depending on his conference calls (and how many online orders I need to pack – hopefully lots!). We crash into bed at around 10pm, when we should go to sleep, but instead binge-watch far too many episodes of something very academic like - Suits, Homeland or Sons of Anarchy. Or if he is away – The Return of The Gilmore Girls! Do you have a favourite mantra? “Life’s too short to stuff a mushroom.” My mother says it all the time and it makes me laugh.

CALLING TO THEM It may have been Andrew Drummond’s controversial ‘Crucifixion’, performed at the CSA Gallery in 1978, that introduced Christchurch people to the artistic genre called Performance Art.

It was an amalgam of a sound recording, poetry and dance. The performance ended inside the Museum, signifying Nina’s reclamation of a space for herself within a building that remains an edifice built from colonial power despite being a storehouse of Polynesian Taonga. “It was brave of the museum,” Amelia says. “And they were so open and supportive of this performance piece.” Leafa’s Me and My Salu Lima performance began outside the Cardboard Cathedral on 12 February. Leafa used her salu lima (hand broom) to sweep the simple, repetitive sweeping movements being representative of the hard work carried out by migrant workers of previous generations. “It was due to the manual work of migrants that their children were able to attend universities and gain better lives. So much is conveyed in this humble gesture,” Amelia says. Faith performed her Confessions – Let it Burn on 12 February. In Samoa, shame is often a public experience, so Faith mimicked this very traditional part of her culture by reading aloud her written confession. It was up to her mother (Leafa) to listen, understand or forgive her daughter. Vaimaila Urale’s Typeface, 23 -25 February, used the computer symbols ‘v’, ‘>’, ‘<’, ‘/’, and ‘\’, to create a Polynesian inspired mural at Artbox, Ara Polytechnic. The final part to the performance was the tattooing of this design onto a volunteer. Vaimaila’s work comments on being Samoan in a Western environment, and the impact a digital age has on traditions and values in contemporary life. “I have so enjoyed working with these artists,” Amelia says. “And I look forward to working with them again in the future.” For further information email amelia@coca.org.nz

aving started real estate in 1979 based in Kaiapoi, Lindsay enjoyed being a local agent and at that time was the only agent who lived and sold in Kaiapoi. When he was joined around twelve years ago by his wife Marilyn, the business took off. Since coming under the Mike Pero Real Estate umbrella in 2012, Lindsay and Marilyn have opened three successful offices
surrounding themselves with an impressive team of people and have sold in excess of 300 homes. To get these results they have perfected their skills in all areas of real estate, from detailed marketing to negotiating effectively. Their vendors and purchasers get to take advantage of their exceptional selling techniques to ensure a ‘stress free’ process on both sides. FESTIVAL OF
COLOUR
WE CONTINUE THIS YEAR WITH AN ACTIONPACKED PROGRAMME OF THEATRE, MUSIC, DANCE, VISUAL ARTS, FILM DISCUSSION AND DEBATE BRINGING THE WORLD TO WANAKA.”
CREATES RECORD DEMAND
The Southern Lakes Festival of Colour continues to cement its role as New Zealand’s “best little arts festival”.
T
his year’s festival features several international performances including four hit shows from Edinburgh Fringe Festival – New York cabaret star Lady Rizo’s Indigo Child, award-winning Every Brilliant Thing, the Irish one woman play How to Keep an Alien and German flipbooks creator Volker Gerling’s Portraits in Motion. “The seven international shows – awardwinners from Edinburgh and music from the United States, Canada, Germany and Australia – have been standout highlights
for me and take this year’s festival up a notch,” says Festival of Colour Director Philip Tremewan. Several New Zealand productions will be on the stage including Hudson and Halls Live! and the world premieres of No Science to Goodbye by Wanaka writer, Annabel Wilson; poet Bill Manhire’s song and music performance Tell Me My Name; a sing-off between four local choirs called Sing It To My Face, plus a full music programme being staged in the Central Lakes Trust Crystal Palace. The festival’s diverse music programme includes country star Tami Neilson, ukulele trio The Nukes and renowned classical pianist Michael Houston who is performing in two shows playing Bach’s Preludes
and Fugues and leading the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in two Mozart concertos. Aspiring Conversations, the festival’s literary, science and socio-political debating forum is back for 2017 and running throughout the event is Schoolfest – a programme for schools at all levels featuring workshops and performances. “We have established ourselves a fine track record of consistently being the best little arts festival in the country,” Philip says. “We continue this year with an action-packed programme of theatre, music, dance, visual arts, film discussion and debate bringing the world to Wanaka.” The Festival of Colour runs 4 – 10 April 2017 in Wanaka and the Southern Lakes.

Celebrating the home of
SURFING
Few may know that beloved New Brighton Beach was actually the first home of surfing here in Aotearoa. In February 1915, legendary Duke Kahanamoku from Hawaii introduced surfing to New Zealand by riding a wooden surfboard in front of a crowded New Brighton beach.
I
n February 2015, the New Brighton Pier and Foreshore Society celebrated the centenary of this by erecting a replica Hawaiian wooden surfboard and commemorative plaque. In March 2016, the very first Ray White New Brighton Duke Festival of Surfing was held, and it was so successful that another is planned for 2017. From tomorrow, 17 March until 26 March, a celebration of surfing will be held in remembrance of ‘The Duke’, his sport and to further promote the wonderful spirit of the New Brighton and beachside communities. There will be three days of surfing competitions held beside the New Brighton Pier. These competitions are sanctioned by The South Island Surfing Association and Surfing New Zealand, which means that competitors can all earn circuit points for their various events. Last year there were 207 entries with surfers travelling from as far north as Whangarei and as far south as Dunedin. More entries are expected this year with entries already confirmed from Australia and the North Island. “We will have the best age group surfers in New Zealand competing as well as some of the best longboard surfers in New Zealand,” Festival Organiser Warren Hawke says. The age group short board surfers range from under 12 years through to under 20 years, with Open Longboard Men’s and Women’s, Open Traditional

Logger Men’s and Women’s, and age groups right through to over 60 years. All finalists will receive a hand-made replica trophy of the solid wooden surfboard that stands beside the New Brighton Library in commemoration of Duke Kahanamoku surfing here in 1915. Adding to the surfing action, organisers are also hitting the repeat button on another successful event from last year - The Eco Frame and Mirror Surf and Beach Art Exhibition will be held at the Fiksate Gallery in New Brighton Mall. This show is curated by local artist Josh O’Rourke and this year features local and emerging artists as well as some established New Zealand artists including Simon Kaan, Tony Ogle, Justin Summerton and Kees Bruin. A new display will feature 100 surfboards and surfing memorabilia dating back to the 1950s. This is being held in a shop space in the middle of New Brighton Mall. The festival will also provide around 100 free surfing lessons to kids from beachside schools as well as an art competition for these schools. For the general public, two rock concerts will spoil the senses along with a free open-air surf movie night to be held at the beach side amphitheatre in front of the War Cenotaph on Friday 24 March beginning at 6pm. Organised by the New Brighton Pier and Foreshore Promotion Society Inc., enquiries about the event can be directed to Warren Hawke, wajhawke@yahoo.com and Esther Perriam, esther@eldernet.co.nz.
W GALLERY GIGS: Grayson Gilmour By Céline Gibson
Eminent music critic Nic Bollinger wrote these words about Wellington solo artist, film composer and synthesizer maestro Grayson Gilmour: “Who else writes tunes as achingly beautiful as these? Not many people around here, that’s for sure.”
ith recognition such as this, you can be fairly confident your star is rising. Christchurch audiences were in for the treat of their lives then when the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna O Waiwhetu kicked off their 2017 Gallery Gigs with the man himself. Grayson Gilmour appeared with his band on 3 March, and held his audience spellbound with music from his album Otherness, due for release in mid-2017. Growing up in Palmerston North, Gilmour has said music was his way out of small town life. He began playing the piano at five, and released his first solo album while still a student at Palmerston North Boys High School. Signed to Flying Nun Records since 2010, Gilmour has a lot to be proud of. His last album Infinite Life was nominated for the Best Alternative Album at the 2014 New Zealand Music Awards. His foray into film composing was hugely successful with Gilmour receiving awards for Best Score at the 2012 NZ Film Awards for the film The Most Fun You Can Have Dying, and the 2015 APRA Silver Scrolls for the feature length drama Consent: The Louise Nicholas Story. Grayson was supported by local space goddesses New Dawn, and sisters Clementine and Valentine Nixon of Purple Pilgrims.

WITCHERY LONGLINE PUFFER
ULTIMATE COMEBACK By Kate Pierson
PAIR A PUFFER WITH A STRIKING BACKPACK.
While the puffer jacket never ran completely out of sartorial steam, the urban apparel was regularly eclipsed by bigger style stars over the last decade. For a while, it was even perceived as somewhat of a fashion faux pas.
I
remember having one in my wardrobe in 2007 and I wore it religiously – it was my ‘go to’ on the chillier days. For the functional fashion lovers out there, you’ll be tickled pink to know that the dejected puffer jacket is making the ultimate comeback and this time, it has a high-fashion twist. One of the earliest signs of its return was at a Fall 2016 Chanel runway show where models were donning the revamped aesthetic. From cropped, biker jacket styles right through to ankle skimming looks, the new iterations of the puffer are all about glam. A harmonious compromise between comfort and class, the puffer stands to be your new best friend. WITCHERY KIM BACKPACK

ong-time friends, Susie Chisnall and Becs Taulango, joined professional minds to develop a concept where hair, nail and beauty experts could work individually from the sparklingnew premises, providing clients with top-to-toe services and treatments. With a spacious salon, outdoor courtyard, and private beauty rooms, clients can order in coffee from The Origin next door and experience heaven here, in unhurried St Albans.
Gemma, the perfectionist beauty therapist, is doing plenty of the latest Micro-blading eyebrow technique – a long-lasting pigmentation of semipermanent colour. Interested in only the best products, Susie, a professional makeup artist, says: “Matrix Biolage has taken the natural step to remove chemicals in its R.A.W ‘Real Authentic Wholesome’ range, which we’re among the first in New Zealand to provide.” It’s like breakfast-time in the shower, with the luscious natural scents and ingredients in the air. “When we opened the promotional package we thought they’d sent us smoothies!” says Becs, a senior hairstylist. Continuing the deliciously natural path, the salon’s Australian-made Edible Beauty range has names like Citrus Rhapsody Toning Mist and Dessert Lime Flawless Micro-Exfoliate – with no plastic micro beads. Gold Rush Eye Balm incorporates dissolving flecks of real gold. FEMININITY FINDS A STUNNING FORM The dynamic duo of Bettie Monroe owners Lucy and Helen is a compelling case of friendship and creativity. Each bringing a unique but complementary set of skills to their New Zealand made clothing brand, the pair prioritises playful and pretty, and that is certainly reflected in their feminine range.
“I
n the first month we had sold everything in stock and we were frantically trying to make more!” they laugh. A graceful and greatly admired step away from the androgynous styles and ‘one size fits all’ mentality, Bettie Monroe celebrates the feminine silhouette, designing garments for all body shapes. “Our design aesthetic transcends trends and we aim to make women look good and feel great at all ages. We listen to our customers, their needs and wants. Our highly trained team of
personal stylists, from all walks of life, offer a personal approach every time.” Proudly New Zealand made at a competitive price, the garments at Bettie Monroe are manufactured under strict quality control processes. “We hand select all our fabrics and do rigorous wear tests to ensure longevity. Our clothes wash and wear well, and if needed we pre-wash garments to ensure no surprises.” To discover the stunning options for your wardrobe, visit Shop 24 at The Colombo and for a sneak peek preview, go to www.bettiemonroe.co.nz

DIGITAL DENTAL WIZARDRY “Innovation fascinates me,” says Ronald Sluiter of OrthodontiX. “I am always on the lookout for new technology that will help me in my practice by making the orthodontic process easier and more comfortable for my patients.”
T
he 3D scanner 3Shape is so much more than just a gadget. OrthodontiX has been using this piece of Danish wizardry for a few months now and the benefits it has had for patients and for the practice as a whole, have been significant. “Digital technology of this kind is very much a global trend and we are excited to be at the forefront of its introduction to Canterbury.” The 3Shape scanner is a small wand which is moved around inside a patient’s mouth to create a 3D image of the current placement of their teeth. Its advantages are many – increased patient comfort with the phasing out of physical impressions, improved
accuracy of imaging, a complete digital record of a patient’s data and a quicker and smoother workflow. “It takes about five to ten minutes to scan a patient. That’s it. There’s no impression material used; no sitting around waiting for the PVS to harden; no gagging; no mess. Our patients love it. And it has also enabled us to communicate with our providers more efficiently. Previously we had to send a physical mould to Invisalign, the aligner manufacturer. Now we simply upload the scan and send them a digital file”. OrthodontiX has clinics in Merivale, Cashmere and Ashburton. Call 0800 678 463 to make an appointment for your free first consultation.

ppointments can be really hard to keep these days – everyone is so busy, and it can be hard to plan ahead around an everchanging schedule,” says John Musgrave, who has owned the salon with his wife Deb for the past six years, along with Beauty Co Westfield and Beauty Co at Northlands Shopping Centre. Customers can walk in at any time, with usually around a 10 to 15-minute wait at the most. “Most of our services are walk-in, and the only thing you really need to make an appointment for is a colour. We use Matrix for all our colours and it’s a really popular service, so it gets very busy – especially in the weekends.” Children’s haircuts are also available, from $15.
“Most of our services are walk-in, and the only thing you really need to make an appointment for is a colour.” He says the best time to come in is the mornings, as the wait time is less. “You could get a massage or a facial while the kids are at the movies, or quickly get your eyebrows done before you do the groceries.” Located at Westfield Riccarton, The Hair & Beauty Company offers the full range of hair and beauty therapy services, specialising in waxing and threading. “Our therapists are all qualified and experienced, and our prices are really affordable.” The store sells the full range of Matrix products, as well as Morrocan Oil and GHDs. ON GUARD FOR
CHILDREN’S TEETH Children’s teeth are precious. But children also like to play sports and be involved in the physical contact that these activities can involve. The solution is a mouth guard and that’s where Dentures Plus comes in.
B
esides all its services associated with the making and repairing of dentures, this practice offers custom-fitted mouth guards for children and for adults. “Mouth guards are an essential part of playing sports – particularly sports such as rugby, hockey and basketball, says Ryan Carlton of Dentures Plus. “Not only do they help protect teeth, but they also help prevent concussion and jaw injuries. Ryan has a great deal of experience in the professional moulding and fitting of mouth guards. It’s a personal interest and makes a bit of a change from fitting dentures. “I like people to keep their teeth, especially children. That’s why we have a special offer for school age kids on our heat-moulded rubber mouth guards. These mouth guards are custom-made for each child and although children’s mouths and teeth are still developing, the mouth guard should last for a season. There are just two appointments needed – the first to take a mould of the upper teeth and the second to check the mouth guard is fitting properly and is comfortable. “We make sure our mouth guards are fun as well as functional. We have them in a big range of colours to suit children’s personalities. Dentures Plus is located at 396 Innes Road. Phone 385 5517. Open Monday – Thursday 8am – 5pm, and on Friday 8am – 2pm. Check out the Caldent denture cleaner as well.

THE ART OF
ACCESSORISING By Kate Pierson
We’ve all been plagued by that ‘something’s missing’ feeling when we’re looking to finalise our look.

supreme when it comes to an aesthetic that is bordering on too basic. Conversely, it is easy to compromise an otherwise strong look with the wrong accessories. BIRDS & KNOLL KELAFONIA AGHIA SUNSET SCARF
• Ensure your best features are accentuated by the accessories – i.e. use coloured earrings to bring out your eyes, or use a waist-belt to accentuate this area • Pick pieces that complement – if you are wearing silver earrings a gold necklace may clash. However, mixed metals within one statement piece can work beautifully. • A scarf can offer great versatility and because of its chameleon like nature, can offer a point of difference time and time again.

If egg freezing is undertaken while a woman is in her early to mid-20s, then the chance of conceiving in her mid to late 30s can improve.
PLANNING FOR FUTURE FERTILITY OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, THE TOPIC OF EGG FREEZING HAS FREQUENTLY FOUND ITSELF TRENDING AND APPEARING IN GLOBAL HEADLINES.
intervention,” Doctor Brown explains. However, if egg freezing is undertaken while a woman is in her early to mid-20s, then the chance of conceiving in her mid to late 30s can improve. “Young women, who are facing conditions like endometriosis or cancer, or those in high-powered careers, make up the majority of women we see for egg freezing.” A 24 year old woman can usually freeze 10 to 12 good quality eggs for the same price as one IVF cycle in her late 30s. Egg harvesting in a woman’s late 30s may only be able to save 4 to 6 eggs. “When you have good quality eggs, it also reduces the risk of miscarriage and chromosomal abnormalities.” At 40 years of age, 40 percent of eggs are chromosomally abnormal compared to less than 20 percent at age 30. Internationally, the number of women who fall pregnant through using their frozen eggs ranges from 5 to 50 percent. The success rate depends predominantly on the number of eggs that were frozen and the age of the woman at the time her eggs were frozen. “Just as there is no absolute guarantee that woman will fall pregnant through IVF, there is no guarantee that women will become pregnant using frozen eggs.” The process to remove and freeze eggs is the same process followed for IVF. After harvesting, the eggs are frozen very quickly in liquid nitrogen – the New Zealand Government has set a ten year limit for keeping the eggs and people can extend this for five years at a time. If you are interested in egg freezing, call 03 377 8949 to make an appointment with a Genea Oxford Fertility specialist.

We have flipped the perspective of how children and people can help the environment, to how the natural environment can help the development of the child.” TimberNook was founded in America seven years ago, by an occupational therapist who noticed many children had balance issues, as well as shortsightedness due to underuse of their distance vision. “We like to think of Kiwi kids as outdoor kids, but the reality is most aren’t,” Kim says. “From over-use of digital devices, being indoors at school all day and travelling to and from, the actual time spent outside can be minimal. f you want to see an impressive example with your own eyes, then discover what’s on offer at Heather and Neville Brown’s Studio 125 Gallery at 125 Aikmans Road between Thursday 16 March and Thursday 13 April. Last night - 15 March - saw invitation only guests getting a sneak peek of the stunning artistic showcase with a unique opportunity to purchase sculptures and artworks and to participate in a live auction. The gallery is open for one month in support of SCAPE Public Art which runs an annual six week season, encompassing a wider programme of events. SCAPE is the foremost producer of public art in the city and this new philanthropic model is a catalyst for supporting and amplifying the reputation of exhibiting artists. Deborah McCormick, Director of SCAPE Public Art, says the presentation of work in Studio 125 Gallery is an exciting new location to exhibit. “Studio 125 Gallery offers an eclectic selection including original sculptures, paintings, photographs, ceramics and limited editions that places art at the heart of Merivale, sparking the imagination of locals. A new way of supporting public art in a positive way.” The artists and exhibits include original works and editions from Anneke Stewart, Ariana Kutia, David McCracken, Fayne Robinson, Fiona Jack, George Lewis, Gill Gatfield, Greer Twiss, Heather Brown, Holly Best, Janna van Hasselt, Judy Darragh, Julia Morison, Mark Catley, Mischa Kuball, Nathan Pohio, Neil Dawson, Peter Atkins, Phil Price, Rachael Dewhirst, Sam Harrison, Sarah Greig and Virginia King. Heather Brown says her hope is to make people feel ‘at home’ in art environments. “By opening my studio as a gallery I hope to develop a closer connection and relationship between artists, galleries, art organisations and the public. I would like people to feel welcomed and relaxed to experience and enjoy a wide range of excellent artwork.” The Studio 125 Gallery pop-up will open for one month to the public at 125 Aikmans Road, Merivale from today, Thursday March 16 until Thursday 13 April. Opening hours are Thursday (3-5pm) Friday and Saturday (10am-4pm).

PRISCILLA,
OF UEENTHE DESERT ISAAC THEATRE ROYAL 24 MARCH – 8 APRIL 2017
T
he extravagant musical opens at the Isaac Theatre Royal on 24 March and runs until 8 April, utilising over 700 costumes, wigs and headdresses from the UK touring show, and a brand new big pink bus! The iconic movie was a surprise runaway Oscar winning hit when released in 1994. The show’s flamboyant storyline, tracing the bus journey of a trio of drag queens from Sydney to Alice Springs,
was translated to the musical stage in 2006. The musical’s enormous international success has seen versions staged from South Korea to Sao Paulo and in just about every language including French, Portuguese, Spanish, Greek and Swedish. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is without doubt Australia’s most successful theatrical export. The leading trio of stars in Priscilla is that of two drag queens, Mitzi and Felicia, and an older
transsexual Bernadette, who find love, friendship and tolerance in the most unlikely places when on a road trip to perform at Alice Springs Casino. The principal role of transsexual Bernadette is performed by Cameron Douglas who has enjoyed a busy career since graduating NASDA in 2002, including performing in over 20 musicals. The two other lead roles will feature Isaac Pawson (Tick/Mitzi) and Tom Worthington (Adam/Felicia), both graduates of NASDA who are carving out careers in musical theatre. Providing many of the pumping disco hits that Priscilla has become synonymous with are the three flying Divas: Emily Burns, Naomi Ferguson and Jane Leonard accompanied by a rocking live band lead by musical theatre maestro, Richard Marrett. Priscilla’s message of tolerance, diversity and anti-bigotry is as relevant today as when the film was first released in 1994. Showbiz Christchurch is delighted to bring this mega musical, in a new production directed by Stephen Robertson, to the Isaac Theatre Royal where it can be enjoyed in all its feathered, sparkly, fabulous glory. For more information, or to book, go to www.showbiz.org.nz/priscilla-queen-desert. Priscilla contains some strong language, with adult themes, and is not recommended for younger audiences.

URBAN CYCLING IN ACTION It’s official. Cycling is cool again. Worldwide, bicycles are taking back the roads, and one business in Christchurch making it happen is Action Bicycle Club, the city’s only store dedicated to urban commuter cycling.
C
o-owners Charlotte Bebbington and Ken Ching opened their Walker Street store and workshop in November 2016, and have been encouraging the city’s cyclists with a vast range of bicycles for rent and sale. “Our aim is to get more people riding bikes, especially women,” Charlotte says. Cycling has come a long way since men threw stones at women who dared to ride bicycles in public. One of Charlotte’s goals is to learn more about cycle maintenance and repair - something other women are doing too. On the second Wednesday of each month, Charlotte helps run Wheel Womyn Wednesday, a RAD Bikes initiative at The Commons in the central city. The team runs workshops targeted at ladies who want to learn about and share their knowledge of all things cycling. Action Bicycle Club rents, sells and services bicycles. Business partner, Ken, runs the workshop where he fixes all kinds of bikes. It has a range of electric bikes, and cargo bikes to encourage urban travel and business solutions. It also specialises in city bikes and quality classic cycles in chic designs and colours. In store is a wide range of accessories, from bicycle bells hand painted in Australia, panniers and helmets, to a range of Hjul apparel, specifically designed with an urban cycling flair. THE HOME OF
PERFORMING ARTS The Gloucester Room at the Isaac Theatre Royal is a place of great transformation.
A
t the forefront of fostering boundary-pushing performing arts, The Gloucester Room innovates, inspires and incubates talent. On now for four nights (15-18 March) is Swallow. A candid and thought-provoking look into the lives of three strangers who are facing their demons head-on, it addresses realities affecting people the world over – from lost love to identity struggles. Producer/Director Garry says, “I used the Gloucester Room last year for another production, Amateur Girl and found that it suited the intimacy required for the type of play being staged. It’s a great venue, and the support offered is top notch – they make it as stress free as possible.” On 26 March at 8pm, The Nukes will take the stage at the Gloucester Room, dazzling audiences with their reckless and riveting live performances – a blend of folk, bluegrass, reggae and post-punk. A
workshop will be held between 5-6pm so audience members can enjoy the thrill of learning from the band pre-performance. The same day, prestigious TV, Film & Theatre Actor Peter Feeney will host a Christchurch Weekend Workshop from 9am-4.45pm, yet another great educational opportunity for community engagement. Peter says, “This workshop focuses on screen acting at a time when more TV and film production activity is opening up in Canterbury, and not much training specifically for screen is available. “In this workshop I offer up the results: what works; practical techniques that help the actor get in to the writer’s head and bring the thoughts and feelings of their character to life on screen. I will seek to impart good habits for lifetime learning. Participants will not just be directed to their full potential in this workshop - they are given the tools to take responsibility for their own results, learning how to anticipate and grow from failure; independently knowing where their acting is ‘at’ - and what is needed to move it forward.” For more information on all of the above, visit http://isaactheatreroyal.co.nz/

RECIPES FOOD WINE BARS & CAFÉS RESTAURANTS
BLURRING OF MEALTIMES By Melinda Collins
Once upon a time, in a land far away, families sat down together two to three times a day to eat at a mythical creation known as the dining table.
S
o, the above may be a slight exaggeration, but fact is, there is a continued blurring of mealtimes as today’s consumers eat around their schedules rather than scheduling around mealtimes and eating is just a mere pause between other activities. Even retailers and restaurants are catering to the ad hoc approach to mealtimes, with an increased number and variety of tapas and sharing plates available. Goodbye starter, main and dessert. Hello smaller snacks and sides to share. We love to snack almost as much as we want to lose weight and there’s a lot of research to suggest these snacking habits are adding too many calories and too few nutrients to our diets. But does it have to be this way? There’s certainly potential in snacking; it keeps your
energy levels up and gives you more opportunities to meet your nutritional needs, while keeping blood sugar levels stable throughout the day, which lessens unhealthy cravings. Eating snacks with the right ratio of nutrients and with the right calories will help keep your body energised and help you lose weight. Protein (plus exercise) fuels the growth of lean muscle mass, which boosts metabolic rate and increases calorie burn. Fibre, meanwhile, helps improve digestion and keeps you from binging on fats and sugars. Smart choices with these ingredients will help your body operate at maximum efficiency. Try options like canned tuna on whole-wheat crackers, sunflower lentil spread with pita bread, a shrimp stack, power berry smoothie, edamame, or a small chicken pita sandwich packed with veges.

n addition to its well-loved restaurant and bar, the newly built function venue has been open for a year. Owners Jacqui Ballantyne and Tania Smith have perfected the flexible menu styles to cater for up to 120 people, for all occasions. “There’s been 30th to 80 plus birthdays, work dos who’ve also enjoyed a round of golf next door, engagements, weddings and after-wedding parties.” The chic but rustic function room opens to a large patio, framed by pineapple palms and lush lawns for relaxing outdoors. It’s only 15 minutes from town, but set amidst rolling countryside. Sunday afternoons see live music playing in the courtyard, and a mustering-style shelter for live
bands is soon to be built. Bordering Halswell River, Jacqui has seen guests arrive in canoes and jet boats - and the 2.5 acre grounds make a perfect helicopter-landing pad. The Tap restaurant is popular for leisurely ladies’ lunches of perhaps crab cakes or corn fritters with salad. Qualified chefs, who have the perk of living upstairs, also make hearty country-style meals such as Angus minute steak sandwiches with bluecheese sauce, perfect with a local Pinot Gris or a 3 Wolves Pale Ale. Serving a range of food designed for sharing including platters and pizzas, main meals and daily-made desserts are also served all day and into the evening with dining either inside or under shaded pergolas or trees. CULINARY HOTSPOT Just off Blenheim Road, in Riccarton – look for the signs – is Box Café. It’s a chic little establishment where owner manager Olivia Hall makes all the food herself. Each week day she’s there at 3.30am, preparing delicious café food. Cakes, pastries, croissants and sandwiches, salads and bagels, all made with fresh daily ingredients.
“O
ur homemade, gourmet pies are incredibly popular,” Olivia says. Box Café is favoured by locals. It serves the office and industrial area from 6.30am until 4pm, five days a week with a selection of hot and cold drinks, smoothies and milk shakes, and the finest Vivace Union Blend Coffee. Take food and coffee away – a perfect option for busy people wanting lunch on the run, or enjoy it in the charming courtyard setting. Olivia, who has a solid history in hospitality, opened Box Café in January
2016. She designed the black and white striped theme that sets the café apart from the industrial background. There’s off street parking and it’s a very relaxed, familiar place. It’s the kind of place where regulars and staff are on a first name basis. “Customers end up becoming friends,” Olivia says. It’s obvious as she laughs and engages with a stream of lunch buyers. Box Café is the ideal spot to enjoy a relaxing coffee or grab a panini to go. Take a look at its Facebook page to see what’s in the cabinet and on the menu board.

favourites. With more than seven years kitchen experience and following years of travelling and learning, master chef Kevin is also the owner and he works tirelessly in Stellar’s kitchen to ensure the high quality of every dish prepared. On the menu is a wide variety of adventurous combination dishes, including vegetarian and gluten and dairy free choices. Try the white fish wrapped in banana leaf and bamboo steamed with light chilli and a lemon ginger flavour. One of Chef Kevin’s signature dishes is the braised beef cheek, with sixteen spices, cooked tender overnight and served with fresh vegetables. Stellar also offers a comprehensive breakfast and lunch menu, and a glamorous High Tea with a difference. “WE’VE GOT A LIGHT, FUN ATMOSPHERE, AND PEOPLE FEEL IT WHEN THEY WALK THROUGH THE DOOR.”
“W CUISINE WITH A SIDE OF QUIRKY Castlerock Café is a quirky place. There is driftwood on the wall and bats! An ancient cash register sits in a corner, and there are photos from past incarnations of the café on display. It all works together with colourful décor and signage to create a relaxed café vibe.
Connoisseurs of Vivace coffee and delicious food Love Coco!
Nick Lange - Proprietor
e’ve got a light, fun atmosphere, and people feel it when they walk through the door,” says Head Chef Candice Davies. The café also has a comprehensive range of food to suit all tastes and dietary requirements. “We have simple food done well.” In a former life, Castlerock came under some fire for an unfortunate incident that made many lycra-clad cyclists feel unwelcome. However, the new management team want the people of Christchurch to know that everyone is welcome, including cyclists. “We have a new smoothie range with dairy and sugar free options,” Candice says. The café even accommodates furry friends with water bowls and free doggie treats. There’s a new autumn/winter menu which includes a Southern Style buttermilk fried chicken open sandwich with Peri Peri and fries. “We use fresh, organic, and free-range and local where possible,” Candice says, such as Holy Smoke Salmon and Peter Timbs products. With off-site catering, a function facility and menu, a constantly changing food cabinet, and colourful inviting décor, Castlerock really is a fun, quirky place - a place “well worth finding”. See the café’s Facebook page for full menus and more. Visit at 21 Mary Muller Drive, Hillsborough. Phone 384 5263. Go to www.castlerockcafechch.co.nz

here our interests lie for the colder winter months is on sheepskin throws. Possessing remarkable virtues, the addition of this type of throw to your living space or boudoir is threefold – warmth, style and resilience. With fibres that breathe, the sheepskin throw doesn’t shed, it is static free (all praise!), is resistant of sagging and tearing, and retains its full shape and look even when time isn’t on its side. With the potential to add texture and layers into a space, the flexible nature of the sheepskin throw means it can easily transition from a floor positioning to a couch. My personal favourites are large wooden benches with a throw draped over the end, or a sheepskin rug that sits underneath a Scandinavian style coffee table. Explore the endless possibilities by perusing Pinterest and also scout around your local thrift-stores where you may discover a vintage find.

WHEN IT COMES TO BUILDING, ONLY A SMALL PORTION OF HOMEOWNERS ARE TURNING TO A DESIGN PROFESSIONAL TO REALISE THEIR DREAMS. ARCHITECT CYMON ALLFREY QUESTIONS WHY THE VALUE AN ARCHITECT CAN BRING TO A PROJECT IS SO EASILY DISMISSED.
F
ebruary saw internationally renowned Ghanaian-British architect Sir David Adjaye come to our shores. Knighted for being one of the leading architects of his generation and a global cultural ambassador for the UK, he is recognised as a ‘world of influence in architecture’. Yet in a radio interview with one of our more well-known presenters he was asked whether his involvement in a recent project was awarded to him due
to the colour of his skin, undermining one of the world’s most prolific and highly skilled architects in a few short words. Listening to the interview got me thinking, why do architects not have the same level of respect and value placed on them as other highly trained professions? If you are sick, the natural inclination is to turn to a doctor, so why when you are building is the same inclination not applied to using an architect or design
professional? Why are the skills and value they can add to a project so easily ignored, or dismissed? As a profession, architects themselves are not necessarily seen to be doing a lot to showcase the value we can add. Consider the way architecture is marketed: it is all about shiny, glossy images, promoting a sense of betterment rather than relatability. Stuck in a cycle of selfpromotion, this marketing is at the core of

What isn’t marketed, or told, is the value that we, as design professionals add to the fabric of our architectural landscape what we do. If the project isn’t deemed worthy of an online blog or high-end magazine, the story and design remains untold. As architects we desire these projects. We are often fueled by the ‘hero’ image of a building: a two-dimensional picture that is celebrated through publicity in the media and used as an integral part of judging in industry awards. A picture that subsequently results in the engagement of
new projects of the same ilk. What isn’t marketed, or told, is the value that we, as design professionals, add to the fabric of our architectural landscape. We don’t talk about the buildings in the background, the buildings that are the heart, or the core, of our city. We simply celebrate the foreground. What the high-end glossy pictures don’t share are how the years of training and unique skills, possessed by the architect,
are working harmoniously together to achieve an efficient, functional and cost effective result that also ticks all the boxes for appearance. The fact that a building looks good, that it pushes the boundaries of design, or that it is polarizing in its aesthetics, is overshadowing the value it is adding to the end user and the environment in which it is found. If we continue to undermine the impact an architect can have on our built environment, the heart of our city has the potential to lose out. As the buildings in the foreground shine, the essence of the city will fade, leaving in its place structures that fail to add value to how we live, interact, and experience the landscape of our city. It is reported that architects are involved in less than five percent of the housing market; a shocking figure that needs to change at a public and professional level. Don’t assume that an architect won’t be interested in your project. The reality is, that no matter what the parameters, a good designer will be able to improve the value of your project – in every sense of the word, every time. As architects we need to ask ourselves how we can be more relevant, and as consumers we need to be asking whether not having that value added is good enough. The answer is simple, it’s not. www.caarc.co.nz

AWARD-WINNING CONSTRUCTION Tonight – 16 March – Casa Construction’s new showhome will open its doors. A compelling expression of architectural excellence combined with award-winning construction expertise, the showhome seeks to redefine expectations of central living.

H
aving won gold in the ‘Builder’s Own Home’ award category - locally and nationally - in the 2016 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards, Casa Construction remains restless in its commitment to innovation. The new showhome located at 75 Forfar Street, St Albans is characterised by the hallmarks of a quintessential Casa Construction build – stunning aesthetics, thoughtful features, meticulous attention to detail and impressive functionality. Of the construction process, Managing Director Jeff Root explains, “The team purposely sought out a suburban central location rather than subdivision setting. The objective was to demonstrate that people can build cost-effective, beautiful,
architecturally designed homes in a central location.” True to the Casa Construction way, the showhome maximises the indoor and outdoor space with the spectacular design and layout attributable to CoLab Architects. “The design sits with CoLab,” Root says. “And thanks to partnerships with our design project team, the features like the massive 250 kilogram sliding doors are possible; enabling entire sides of the home to be opened up.” The stark, black cedar exterior provides privacy while the cleverly positioned light shafts and windows beyond maximise natural light and privacy simultaneously. “This is not an ostentatious design nor is it an expensive one. The layout is thoughtful and efficient. A huge central kitchen and dining area ties the house together and creates a powerful dynamic that allows visitors to easily imagine living there.” Discover the beauty of Casa Construction’s work yourself from this Saturday, 18 March. The showroom is open to the public from 10am-4pm.

he perfect accent for a room that needs a pop of colour or point of interest, beguiling blooms can make all the difference to your space. Trouble is, replacing them frequently can take a toll on your bank account. Having recently purchased some stylish storage/ feature options for my living room – the French/English inspired Le Petit Sac En Papier recycled and highly durable kraft paper bags – I went on a mission to find
faux-flowers, which can be easily purchased online. The idea with the kraft bags is that you can stuff them with foliage and flowers to create a modernist approach to arrangements. Edgy and eclectic, this aesthetic can be achieved with minimal spend, particularly if you find artificial blooms that look sensational and are sustainable. They may come with a hefty price tag, but in the long-run, they will help you save on buying replacements.

Graphex Insulated Façade offers an external insulation system that provides a complete thermal overlay to the structure. External insulation systems or ‘outsulation’ is considered the best location for insulation as there are minimal ‘thermal breaks’ when compared to ’in wall’ insulation. SHAPESHIFTERS

THE PROMISE OF ‘TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE’ MAKES AN IMMEDIATE IMPRESSION ON BARGAIN HUNTERS LIKE MYSELF.
B
ut it’s not quite what you think – I’m not referring to the concept of getting something free with purchase - but rather the concept of ‘shapeshifting’ furniture. A shapeshifter is defined as something that is able to change its identity at will, and the furniture I’m a fan of fits perfectly into this category. I’ve included some salient examples in this piece to illustrate what I mean. Take the side table for example – the perfect host to some candles and blooms, or a delicious platter, this adaptable accent can also rise to a seating challenge when you find yourself short of furniture to host friends. The featured chair is also an excellent example of where lateral thinking can take your aesthetic – a chair is like the modern equivalent of a bookcase - able to showcase the best of your coffee table collections.
Storage baskets like the ones shown here are also functionally flexible playing host to everything from toys, pillows and blankets right through to pot plants. When next shopping for furniture, consider the shapeshifters on offer, their split personality can come in very handy!

HERE ARE OUR TOP TIPS FOR ENSURING THE PROTAGONIST IN YOUR VISUAL STORY IS A MODERN DAY HERO MAKING HEARTS FLUTTER RATHER THAN CAUSING HEARTBREAK.
1.
Let your statement piece be the centre of attention: there’s only one exception to the ‘no one likes a showoff rule’ – the statement piece. If you’re going to purchase a piece that has a come-hither look when it comes to attracting the eye, then you have to accept that it is rightly going to steal the show in your space. With this in mind, it’s essential to have other accents or furniture items play the supporting role rather than competing for attention.
2.
Context is critical: take time to consider the bigger picture – if you are dressing a room from scratch you have the benefit of introducing layers and new dimensions into the space around the statement piece. If, however, a statement piece is an afterthought, it’s important to consider how this piece will fit in with your existing décor – space and style wise.
3.
Mix and match: if you choose an avant-garde style piece this doesn’t necessarily mean the rest of the space needs to fulfil this brief. Just like with bold patterns, contrasting furniture concepts can mesh well especially when old world meets new world.

I
can’t say my skills improved all that much (I’m domestically challenged), but I will say I definitely learnt the importance of investing in a quality knife set and cutting block. It seems a rather mundane topic, but as I discovered, there is quite a lot to consider if you want your money to be well invested. With good looks and a thick skin, wood and bamboo options have become increasingly popular. The pros are that they are eco-friendly and have proven to be sanitary however they can potentially make your knives blunt, and are not a big fan of being run through the dishwasher because their material can be warped and damaged by the heat and soaps. On the flipside, plastics may not look as pretty, but they are easy breezy when it comes to popping them into the dishwasher and are excellent for cutting raw meat as they clean so quickly and there is likely less risk for cross-contamination. If in doubt, shop around. Chop to it!

pon entering the stunning showroom, the aesthetic is modern and compelling while the fashionable staff members greet customers with a genuine smile on their faces. The cute team mascots – a furry family of friendly hounds – are happily dozing in their respective areas. Most importantly, the tile ranges on offer are distinct – a combination of contemporary and classic options – with strong ties to Europe. Owner Karen Joyce says, “We have a lot of new look wood tiles coming through. For Autumn and Winter the favoured look is very Italian. “We are seeing a significant emphasis being placed on warmer tones and designers are moving more and more away from greys, which have been popular for so many years now.” Decorative and ornate style tiles are also reigning supreme on the home style front with the added interest of three dimensional options. “We are definitely seeing Cantabrian homeowners embracing a more adventurous streak. “Our ambition is to help our clients find what resonates most with them and to offer unique flexibility – tile options that have application everywhere from their splashbacks to their showers to their floors.” Keep an eye out for the brand new Exquisite Tiles website coming soon at https://exquisitetiles.co.nz/. ENTERING A NEW CREATIVE ERA After relocating to a brand new space, incorporating a new showroom and outdoor concrete overlay display, Flash Concrete could be forgiven for any ‘down time’. Judging by its active agenda over the coming weeks, the business’ innovation shows no sign of breaking pace!
WE BELIEVE THIS WILL BE AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE WHO ARE TIME POOR SO THEY CAN EXPLORE THE OPTIONS IN THEIR OWN TIME.” Microtoppings create the impression of precast concrete and can be acid stained to look like rusted metal and other custom looks. Microtopping surfaces are always sealed upon completion to protect the surface and lock in the colour, ensuring longevity. Fully customisable, customers can select almost any colour and will be delighted with the beautiful industrial look that can be created - a great companion to all kinds of décor. The team at Flash Concrete is also excited to have a presence at this year’s Horncastle Arena Homeshow (24-26 March 2017) where staff will be on hand to discuss relocation, microtopping and the options for waterproof concrete – among many other services and areas of expertise. From a designer concrete floor or stunning patio area, right through to a faux stone wall, the generous options at Flash Concrete have revolutionised the perception of concrete highlighting its multi-faceted uses and infinite potential. LUXURY & LOVE The look of
By Nicholas Henare
A year ago I was lucky to drive the Audi R8 and R6; two top line vehicles capable of leaving a big smile on your face when you test them, pushing them to their limits.
I
fell in love with Audi then, so when they asked me to try the Audi A4 saloon, I got excited. Very excited. The 2.0L, four cylinder, 140kw petrol, 7 speed transmission and front wheel drive A4 Saloon is exceptionally designed and is a stunner when it comes to the technology. I drive an older Audi A4 so it’s great to see the brand’s newest version – a brand which has a world-renowned pedigree.

The virtual cockpit really feels like something special. An LCD, bespoke dash tickles the fancy and stokes the curiosity. Better yet, your on-road information is easily accessed with a thoughtfully-positioned instrument cluster at the tip of your fingers. The sound system was music to my ears. In short, it was great. Why? It provided the soundtrack for the thrill of driving an exceptional vehicle. Because when it really comes down to it, it’s the acceleration and slickness of the drive that got me with the A4. You put your foot on the accelerator and there is a smooth, instant response. When it comes to the design of the interior, as a leather-lover, it fit the bill. The leather combined with the quintessential Audi-style stitching means the experience is more than just driving - it’s a pleasure. I’m not ashamed to admit I really was looking for any excuse to drive it while I had it. I recommend you zip down to Archibalds in Tuam Street to try what I consider to be one of the best drives since I discovered that Audi is every bit as magnificent as it promises to be. I’m big on first impressions and this one stole my heart from the moment I saw it. It looks great and performs with power and elegance. You can always recognise quality and that is what you get with the Audi A4. And then some.
I’M NOT ASHAMED TO ADMIT I REALLY WAS LOOKING FOR ANY EXCUSE TO DRIVE IT WHILE I HAD IT.

P
a brutal
BEAUTY By Nicholas Henare
First European is coming to the party with something special soon - the Triumph Bobber.
92 March 16, 2017 Metropol
reviewing the video, it’s easy to see that Triumph’s marketing is pretty sharp and probably aimed at a guy just like me. You love the bike, you love the attitude, and it’s just really appealing. The Bobber has the urban sports attitude that makes you want to hit the road and drive with a friend to an out of the way café or bar and park it out front. It’s got an edge as a bike that dares you to hit the back roads or blast around town. From the unique chassis set up, ride by wire, ABS and torque assist clutch to the lighter exhaust, the bells and whistles are intriguing. Better yet, you can mix things up with bespoke style and a pile of additions available. With a floating aluminium seat pan, distinctive swing cage, wide flat bars and brushed metal detailing, this bike is built for fun and loaded with style. Featuring such clean lines, it’s hard for me not to be wowed by this work of art a high calibre two wheeled beast of a machine. Triumph has been doing it long enough that you know you’ve got a reliable machine. Stripping the Bonneville down to its pure essence, the Bobber has the quintessential Triumph character. It delivers on the power as well. I could go on and on, but I guess you’re just going to have to check it out at First European for yourself. A slick 6 speed gear box with 1200cc, it’s a brutal beauty built with looks and built for speed. In fact, it’s built for everything the bad boy needs.
KEYS TO THE
KINGDOM By Nicholas Henare
Well this is a story all about how my life got flipped-turned upside down. So let me tell my story, just sit right there, and let me tell you how I lost … my car key!
I
don’t think you realise quite how important that little object is on a modern-day vehicle do you? ‘Oh, I’ll just have another cut if I lose it’. Well, this article is a warning to take my advice and prepare for Armageddon should you lose the master. After a mishap with my boys’ bikes along the side of the paintwork, my Audi was off for repairs where I was issued with a loaner. Fast forward a few days and taking the kids for a surf on a Sunday afternoon seemed like a great idea. Locking all our valuables in the loan car and popping the key in the front of my wetsuit pouch was not. Through a stupid scenario, I lost said key in the surf. What do you do? Unfortunately, you only have one option. Call a locksmith with a $250 call out fee. Most modern cars come with keys that contain a chip in the key that sends a message to the computer telling it you’re using a legitimate key and not a fake. Any other key won’t work.
The scenario quickly became worse with no phone. All I had on was a wetsuit in 30 degrees with two young boys in the same situation. What was meant to be a straightforward adventure at the beach turned into a 7-hour mammoth ordeal that cost me dearly. The story goes that if you lose your master key, prepare to pay more than $2000 dollars to have it replaced, tow trucks and locksmiths not included especially if it’s a loaner and you are not covered by insurance. Matt Stubbs from 0800 Locked Out told me, “You should always have at least two keys; people lose one and choke about paying a couple of hundred for another one. That’s a much better alternative to the drama and cost that happens when you lose the last one, isn’t it Nick?” It was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had and I want to spare you that pain. If you only have one key to the car, get another cut immediately!
I DON’T THINK YOU REALISE QUITE HOW IMPORTANT THAT LITTLE OBJECT IS ON A MODERN-DAY VEHICLE WELL, PREPARE FOR ARMAGEDDON SHOULD YOU LOSE THE MASTER.

T
he 2017 Chevy Cruze Diesel Sedan is to be introduced in the US later this year and will include options for either a standard six-speed manual or a new, optional Hydra-Matic, nine-speed, automatic transmission that includes fuel-saving stop/start technology. The vehicle range is reported to be 702 miles on a single tank of fuel. The Cruze will also come in a highly-anticipated diesel hatchback model later this year.

“For Chevy to break the 50-mpg barrier with its new Cruze Diesel Sedan sends a very strong message about the possibilities for clean diesel as a competitive technology in the fuel economy race,” says Allen Schaeffer, the Executive Director of the Diesel Technology Forum. Needless to say the accomplishment is made even more impressive because it was achieved under a more stringent EPA emissions testing regime. Even this early into 2017, the future for clean diesel in passenger vehicles in the US has received two major kickstarts. The first came with the announcement that Ford intends to offer a new 3.0L diesel option in its Ford F-150. Fact, this is the best-selling pickup truck for the past 40 years, and now the Chevy Cruze Diesel Sedan is breaking the 50-mpg barrier. “In addition, diesels are moving forward in the SUV sector. GMC has announced a new 1.6L turbo-diesel engine option for its all-new 2018 GMC Terrain SUV, Mazda will be introducing a 2017 CX-5 SKYACTIV-D SUV diesel later this year, and Chevy will also offer a diesel option for the Chevrolet Equinox,” Schaeffer explains. Diesel hasn’t played a big part in my driving history, but my latest experiences have made me look twice.

GIFT OF
THE GAB By Nicholas Henare
There are about two degrees of separation in Christchurch these days. It’s a small city where everyone knows everyone.
I
t’s even tighter in the automotive industry, so when I heard that Armstrong Motor Group had picked up Wayne McLoughlin as their Service Manager, I thought I’d drop in for a chat about where he’s been and where he is now. Servicing a vehicle is something a driver begrudgingly does so it’s important that a Service Manager makes your experience as smooth and painless as possible for someone going through the process. Wayne started off like all good kiwi lads. His dad was into it, so the acorn didn’t fall far from the tree. Wayne applied for an apprenticeship at Westminster Motors - do you remember the old Tuam Street Branch? Working on Hillmans, Morris and even the old lawn mowers, everything with a problem came in the door to see Wayne. After years of experience he ended up at
Motor Works in Shirley, a service station and garage that took on the challenge of the early days of Japanese imports. When you have skills acquired through decades of work in automotive repairs and service, it means one thing in Christchurch: you’ve done a good job because you’re still here. As we all know, you’re only as good as your last job. These days Wayne thinks the industry has become more about specialist automotive repairs and the skills you need to have are more refined. Customer expectations are so much greater and one thing you can rely on from Wayne is integrity. In a town where relationships means everything and trusting your automotive specialist to repair and service your vehicle is paramount, it looks like Armstrong Motor group have made a good choice in recruiting this gentleman.
