ith Canterbury Fashion Week next week, and our latest cover a fashionable nod to what we can expect from this year's show, I've been thinking quite a lot about the subject. L’il Chuck –
THE ONE MAN SKIFFLE MACHINE By Celine Gibson
Christchurch musician David Thorpe (aka Li’l Chuck –The One Man Skiffle Machine) came to New Zealand from the U.K. in 2003. “I was in a duo band back home called Little Chuck Little, so the name kind of stuck – only I abbreviated it a bit.”

H
ow would David describe Li’l Chuck’s sound? “Skiffolicious! Very organic; no added preservatives or flavourings!” Skiffle is a mish-mash of jazz, blues and folk, typically using homegrown, improvised instruments, that originated in the United States of America. Lonnie Donegan made it popular in the U.K. during the 1950s. We watch a video promotional track for David’s soon to be released album Utility Blues in which L’il Chuck is sharing his unique music with an appreciative audience in
Cathedral Square. The song Stick It In Your Pipe And Smoke It, from the album, is a cheeky, sassy backing to the video. There are twelve songs on Utility Blues, all bar one penned by the multi-talented David – as was the same for his previous 2014 album Blues in Full Swing. David, who played with the Black Velvet band for over a decade, says it was the earthquakes, turning forty and the birth of his first daughter that prompted him to go solo. “Time is precious; also, there was the desire to create an archive for my children.” Utility Blues comes out 17 March with an album release show at Wunderbar, Lyttelton on 18 March. That was really exciting for both our owners and purchasers and a privilege for my team.” Cameron says that New Year resolutions and a chance to reflect over the holiday break often lead people to determine new directions for their lives and living environments and so houses come on to the market. “There’s plenty of choice in homes available currently right across the spectrum of the market, from houses in the several million dollar bracket to those at entry level range. a very fair market for both buyers and sellers.” Cameron and his team achieve the kinds of results they do only because of their experience, knowledge and exceptional levels of service. These attributes can make all the difference between simply selling and selling well. The fact that Cameron is now selling properties for the sons and daughters of previous clients speaks volumes for the way he works closely with vendors and has their best interests to the fore. “The ‘Three Ps’ are my mantra – my vendors and I want the best possible price. “To get this we must present and promote a house to the best of our abilities. Engaging a large real estate company, such as Harcourts, with a network of agents, adds credibility to a sale and ensures maximum exposure and price.” Contact Cameron on 027 555 7079, (03) 352 6166 or email cameron.bailey@harcourts.co.nz.

MASTERPIECE RETURNS
‘The Devil’s Marksman’ (Der Freischütz), one of the most important and often played operas in history, was well known in New Zealand a century and more ago. Today, it is known only to a handful of Kiwis. This marvellous opera is about to be revived, in Christchurch, at the Lansdown Festival.
Weber: The Devil’s Marksman March 5 (7.30) & 12 (7.00 PM) Mozart: Women are like that (Così fan tutte) March 19 (6.30) & 26 (6.00PM)
n 1874, the Evening Post wrote, “The great event of the operatic season, ‘Der Freischütz’, took place last night before a very large audience....the applause was immense....such cheers hardly ever have been heard before in this theatre...” Seven years later, The NZ Herald wrote of another performance, “It is one of the most beautiful compositions in the repertoire of operatic music” adding, rather tellingly, that “Der Freischütz is too well known to require any detailed statement of the plot”. How has Kiwi knowledge of this masterpiece evaporated? The opera’s story is dynamic, a battle between good and evil; its music is contagiously beautiful and immediately appealing; it is one of the three most often performed German operas over the past 200 years. In early 19th century Germany, there was an explosive revival of interest in fairy tales which inspired Weber to write ‘The Devil’s Marksman’ in 1821. Its overnight fame swept through the international music world like wild-fire and its influence on other composers was enormous. This forgotten masterpiece will be reintroduced to the Kiwi public on March 5th (7.30PM) and 12th (7PM) in the Golden Room at heritage “Lansdown”, 132 Old Tai Tapu Road (between Halswell and Tai Tapu), as part of its popular festival of narrated opera. Tickets $55. For bookings, general information and directions, visit www.lansdownsummer.com or ring (03) 963 0870 (ticketing via The Court Theatre).

UNEARTHING
HIDDEN BEAUTY Sometimes full of meaning, insights and inspiration, other times fun and light hearted, Charles Hannah produces art, illustration and designs, born of a love of art, fashion, advertising, furniture and design in its many forms. Metropol talks to the talented artist about her creative adventures and what it means to be able to truly delight the senses.
Tell us about your adventure into the arts world – did you always aspire to be an artist? I started drawing at a very young age. It was actually first noted by a Plunket Nurse in my Plunket Book when I was one and a half (the wallpaper never recovered!) Even though I studied art at RMIT in Melbourne, I still thought of it only as a hobby and instead focused on a career in advertising. However, my passion for art never left, and as the years went on, I realised that given a choice in life, it was the only thing I really wanted to pursue.
C
harles Hannah celebrates the diversity of art and design, from different cultures and interpretations of beauty, through to different styles of form and subject matter. Her works are designed to make you stop, think, and appreciate the everyday beauty that is often simple, hidden and just waiting for you to stop long enough to appreciate it
Your work is very quirky and has a comforting soul to it – how would you describe the evolution of your style? I have always drawn animals and still have sketches of lions, elephants, etc. that I did when I was 11. Years spent working as a Veterinary Nurse gave me real insight into the quirky personalities and characteristics of animals. Ideally I want people to find a real connection with my animals and think…. ‘Oh, what a character, I just have to take him home!’ What is the most liberating part of being an artist? Conversely, what are some of the challenges? The most liberating and rewarding part is producing work you thoroughly love creating, and meeting clients that adore what you do too. Some of the challenges come if there is a lull between exhibitions and the temptation to return to the

financial security of the corporate world rears its head. That’s when wonderful feedback from clients keeps you going. Are there any particular mentors or icons that have inspired your journey? Wow. That’s hard. There are so many international and historical artists whose work inspires me… yet honestly, it is my fellow artists here in Christchurch that really keep me going and whose support over a coffee feeds the soul when I need it most. What is the latest news with Charles Hannah Art Design? After working on rather detailed oil paintings for the last year or so, I’ve really enjoyed my current project producing a series of loose charcoal drawings based on re-homed dogs from Dogwatch. The stories and photos sent through from families have been used as a reference for my project and have made it so rewarding. Why the moniker Charles Hannah? Artists have used pseudonyms for centuries (Marc Chagall, Caravaggio, Man Ray) and when I was first preparing to leave the relative security of the corporate life to become an artist, I drew inspiration from my great-great-grandparents Charles Maidment and Hannah Pickering. As early pioneers, they were bold enough to leave the comfort of an everyday existence and risk everything to pursue their dream life. Do you have any advice for other aspiring artists? If you love it enough and are passionate enough about it, keep going, keep persevering through the hard times - it will work. You spend a great deal of your life working; don’t get to the end of your life only to regret how you spent it. And yes, buy the occasional Lotto ticket! What is your favourite mantra? “A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.” — John A. Shedd
The most liberating and rewarding part is producing work you thoroughly love creating, and meeting clients that adore what you do too.

TREATMENT
It is impossible to overstate the special role that felines play in our lives. For many of us, they are the equivalent to family members and just like our human relatives; we are keen to help them fulfil their potential.
A
t the forefront of modern medicine and treatment, Ourvets, embraces a simple yet significant philosophy - “People and pets”. All of the loyal and caring staff at Ourvets have a fundamental desire to remain at the forefront of medicine and technological innovation to ensure pets get the care they deserve. An impressive service offered by Ourvets is the Iodine 131 treatment. Radioactive iodine (I131) can be used to provide a safe cure for hyperthyroidism in felines. This is a common condition seen in older cats, but thankfully a single injection of the I131 can cure around 95 percent of cases. Where the condition persists, cats can be re treated with another dose. The specially trained veterinarians at Ourvets administer the treatment by injecting a small amount of liquid under the skin – similar to a receiving a vaccination. This is a simple procedure that does not require an anaesthetic. The feline patients then remain in the care of the veterinarians and veterinary nurses at Ourvets for 5-7 days following the treatment in cosy cattery style accommodation provided in their purpose built Radioactive Iodine ward. ‘Spice’ is currently undergoing radioactive Iodine treatment and is staying with the team at Ourvets for the next 5 days in the Iodine ward. Spice will revisit the team at Ourvets in 6 weeks’ time for a blood test to confirm that the I131 treatment has been successful. Keep an eye on Metropol for more heartwarming recovery stories from Ourvets. For further information visit www.ourvets.co.nz

Tegan’s sister Briar will be the alternate lead role as the willful nun turned nanny, Maria, in three performances, but for the majority of the season, Maria will be played by Burnside High’s drama teacher, Shannon Peck, a mum of two who returned to the theatre, enticed by her all-time “bucket-list role”. The girls say, “There’s something about Maria – you literally become her”. Everyone agrees the ‘Canterbury Marias’ rival Julie Andrews. FAMILY FOCUSED AND FLEXIBLE For Angeline Boniface and her team, being lawyers means looking outside the box for solutions that work for both Cameron & Co and its clients.
he employment and family law team at Cameron & Co’s Upper Riccarton branch manage a balancing act - working in a thriving legal firm, as well as facing the demands of being working parents. “So I can work as a partner in the firm, as well as being an active and involved parent, I start my days early – very early,” Angeline says. “I noticed that when I was stopping for my early morning coffee, most of the other people lined up were tradies. Their day starts early; so does mine. The fact that we can offer appointments at 6.15am in the morning works for them – hence the reason we say that we’ve got a ‘tradie’ client base at this office.” Angeline adds that because she is married to a tradie, she knows that for many working parents, including many of Cameron & Co’s clients, a 9am - 5pm day isn’t the norm. As a result, the firm offers a service that allows all clients, not only tradies, to come in for appointments outside of normal business hours – at lunchtimes and after hours. “Because we are known predominantly as a family law practice, we stand by what that really means. So it’s not uncommon to have toddlers causing havoc, or surly teenagers silently glaring at mum or dad during appointments. It’s what we do, and we love it.”

Simply Indulge Bakehaus will have a wide range of BOE products including the famous 5 grain, ciabatta and Turkish loaves and some of their more indulgent treats including cronuts and danishes, as well as hot Breads of Europe pies. Brian has always been a master pie baker; his simple, wholesome fillings and flaky golden pastry make his pies irresistible, and now that he has a skilled team working on the bread production, Brian’s had time to turn his hand back to the pies. If you are heading to the rugby this season, make sure you stop at one of the Bratwurst Stands and try out the BOE sourdough hot dog bun, made especially for the venue. The last few months have been frantic, in the best possible way, with the new website attracting more customer enquiries than ever and Brian and Lydia love the opportunities to help new businesses get started or existing businesses revamp their menus. Christchurch loves to shake its tailfeather and it’s not hard to see why. Positively bursting at the seams with creativity, our recreational landscape is a veritable treasure chest of amazing freebies as the beneficiary of this untamed entrepreneurism.

etropol loves to be right in the thick of the “who’s who” and the “what’s what”, so here’s a low-down on the best events in your neck of the woods. We know you can’t resist!
1. CANTERBURY JAPAN DAY, RICCARTON PARK Sunday 5 March, 9.30am-4.30pm The beauty of Japanese Spring will be brought to life right here in the Garden City. From sushi, ramen noodles and Japanese delicacies right through to a sumo tournament, tea ceremony and other cultural events and performances, Japan Day is an enlightening holiday without having to get on a plane.
2. RAINER WESTON, CHRISTCHURCH ART GALLERY
PECHAKUCHA NIGHT CHRISTCHURCH VOLUME 30, ART CENTRE
Finishing Sunday 12 March The Devil’s Blindspot is sadly on its way out the gallery door in just over a week and it’s a must-see. Rainer Weston’s work is a particular stand-out in this showcase of emerging and early-career talent. A response to the new cultural conditions of photography, the artistry doesn’t play by the rules of tradition or convention, it bypasses them. Our favourite kind of creative expression!
Wednesday 15 March PechaKucha has come to play an important role in Christchurch’s burgeoning arts and culture scene. Stoking intellectual curiosity, satiating a desire for creative networking, and meeting a need for progress in Christchurch across all industries, the next installation of this popular pasttime will bring arts, culture, education and creativity back to the Christchurch Arts Centre.

TICKET GIVEAWAY! Priscilla, Queen of the Desert rolls into town on 24 March for what will be the first production in Showbiz Christchurch’s 2017 season.
U
tilising over 700 costumes, wigs and headdresses from the UK touring show, Showbiz’s production will be the first New Zealand theatre company staging of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. The show opens at the Isaac Theatre Royal on 24 March until 8 April. Translating the iconic movie to a stage musical setting required significant changes by the authors of the film, Stephen Elliot and Allan Scott, and the musical’s writer and first director, Simon Phillips. The musical has evolved considerably since the first production left Australia eight years ago, and there are now several stage versions, all different yet all preserving the audience focus on

the show’s three unique characters and their personal and physical journey. The show’s enormous success has seen versions staged from South Korea to Sao Paulo and in just about every language including French, Portuguese, Spanish, Greek and Swedish. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is without doubt Australia’s most successful theatrical export. Metropol is proud to have two double passes to give away to the Saturday 25 March show. To be in to win simply head to www.metropol.co.nz/win (or scan our QR code with your smart phone), put in your details and tick the competitions you want to be in to win. FASHION NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT: BALLANTYNES LAUNCHES YOUR STYLE By Kate Pierson
I
In the eyes of its loyal clients, it’s impossible not to have high expectations of Ballantynes. A bona fide retail icon, its Midas Touch means that everything it turns its hand to has a dynamism embraced and celebrated by customers.
t came as no real surprise, therefore, that my exclusive experience of Ballantynes’ brand new Your Style launch saw me swept off my feet. A pioneering service, Your Style offers a professional, private one-to-one consultation with experienced stylists in either Fashion, Beauty or The Home. With very reasonable consultation fees fully redeemable on product purchased, the service rises magnificently to challenges faced by its clients – those who are time poor, hungry for inspiration and looking for style guidance that is informed, considerate and compelling.
Sheila Larsen Helping you make and find solutions
My day begins with a fresh orange juice and I’m asked if I would like to place my order for some light refreshments to be served throughout my experience. I’m introduced to Ben Knox, Beauty Stylist, who works his magic in a plush room on the ground level of the building. I’m immediately put at ease by the beautiful space and Ben’s warm, witty and endearing demeanour. Admittedly, I am not the savviest when it comes to my beauty and skin regimes, but Ben assures me I’ve entered a ‘no judgement’ zone. “I meet with clients who want to get ready for special occasions or those who simply

want to revisit their beauty look,” he tells me. “My philosophy is to listen carefully to what my clients already do and what they are looking for and I help them to express themselves in a way that is true to them and their personality. “I champion a wellbalanced makeup aesthetic – it’s about focusing on every feature and amplifying the assets so the whole face gets touched but not in a way that the features are competing with each other.” Ben is rich in technical and life experience after a decade in the industry and I enjoy learning his top tips for makeup application and removal and keeping my skin in the best possible condition, as well as being advised on the value of the products he is working with. “I am not a loyalist to just one brand – I work with elements of brands that best suit my clients.” After enjoying a full beauty makeover, my skin is absolutely glowing with a look that enhances my features and I immediately know this is reflected in my confidence. From here, I’m escorted over to the homewares area where I have a private consult with Adrienne Campbell. I’m impressed by her incredible stories of how she came to acquire her self-taught styling knowledge and am immediately relaxed thanks to her down-to-earth nature. From linen for the bedroom and china for the dining table through to mirrors, lamps and pictures to brighten up the living room, Adrienne has a natural ability

to accessorise any space in the home with the clever placement of beautiful objects. “My philosophy is to ensure the service is really relaxed and inclusive. I encourage my clients to focus on creating a home that is true to their identity. For some customers they are starting from scratch while others have pieces they need to build on. “We are committed to getting it right and helping them to find exactly what they want. If it’s a bedroom, we will pull out duvets, cushions and throws, and bring their dream to life right in front of their eyes. We also work in the home and love to experiment. Our buyers spend a lot of time sourcing stunning products and our range reflects that.” As the final cherry on top to an inspiring morning, I next meet with Fashion Stylist Anna Williams. Her standard practice prior to a consultation is to provide a Your Style questionnaire which helps her to ascertain what her client is looking for
{
while providing insight to their personality and tastes. I’m thrilled to discover Anna has already pulled some incredible looks in my size and before long we are talking through the cuts, fabrics and colours that work best for me. Anna’s confidence coupled with her great sense of humour make her the ideal wardrobe consultant and I found myself drinking in her knowledge. “I love interacting with customers, showing them options and offering new ideas. Many of my clients see me because they find clothes shopping a bore or can become easily frustrated. My philosophy is that I want to see them smiling and that if they only wear something once they have bought through me, I haven’t done my job.” An expert with colours, materials and body shapes, Anna has already worked with clients ranging from 18-80 years old. “I like to help women discover fashion that speaks to them. Eighty percent of a wardrobe should be practical, comfortable

items that fit beautifully – our alteration service on offer ensures that.” From here my experience has sadly come to an end – the final word about Your Style is best left to the ever-inspiring CEO Maria O’Halloran, “Ballantynes has always prided itself on its ability to create amazing customer experiences that surprise and delight. “Your Style is a natural extension of this philosophy. For us, a visit to a Your Style consultant is not just about purchasing beautiful products; it’s about creating a memorable and positive experience.”

his is a welcoming, supportive place to work out, no matter how fit or unfit you feel you are,” says owner, Moana Williams. “We encourage people to take a healthy approach to feeling fit, healthy and happy. It’s not just about weight loss – it comes from within.” Established in 2011, the unique gym specialises in group exercise classes, and the expert trainers offer a wealth of industry experience. “We have a really balanced team, who are all highly knowledgeable in their own set of niche markets,” Moana says. “There’s a real fun, family feel here and we offer a personal touch. he intensive 10-week course is taught by carefully chosen tutors, who have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry. Tutor Rebecca Guyton began her career in 2003, when she was trained at the Design & Arts College by Midge Holding – Minifies owner and highly experienced BBC trained makeup artist. Rebecca went on to become a freelance
makeup artist, and also worked as a senior makeup artist at Minifies. From running classes and teaching special effects makeup, to working in the wedding industry and bodypainting for events such as Cup Day, her creative talent and knowledge runs across all areas. “I studied art before I got into makeup and I also have experience with hair and photography, as well as costume design, so that’s a bonus,” she says. “Having experienced everything across the board, teaching people is now what I enjoy the most. It’s a real privilege to be working here, alongside Kristen and Midge.” KSFX follows on from the success of Kristen’s first makeup school, the Kristen Stewart School of Makeup (KSSM). “Kristen really hit the nail on the head opening a second specialised school, especially with New Zealand becoming so well-known in the film industry,” Rebecca says. “This is a great opportunity for people who want an industry-recognised qualification in special effects makeup, completed in a fun, supportive and creative environment.” KSFX offers three classes per year. n energizing and uplifting mix of fun, empathy, comradeship and community are palpable at this family friendly and successful event, as it brings together some of the most beloved fashion powerhouses in the country to raise funds for families who stay at Ronald McDonald House (RMH). This year the event will take place at The Foundry in Christchurch with fashion deities including Andrea Moore, Augustine and Annah Stretton – among others – bringing their stunning collections to the catwalk for this deserving cause. After the success of last year’s Fashion Show, Maree Harris, Owner and Events Organiser at M Factor Events, is looking forward to bringing more glitz, glamour and fashion to this year’s runway. “My twin nieces and family spent two months staying at Ronald McDonald House and it was such a calm, welcoming and family orientated escape for them away from the hospital,” Maree explains. “It’s a really special charity to me, which is why I am so excited to use my passion to support such an incredible cause.” Ronald McDonald House South Island CEO Matthew Mark comments of New Zealand’s role in the charity, “Last year over 627 families from across the South Island stayed at Ronald McDonald House South Island, and because we receive no direct government funding we rely on community support.” The event will be held at 7pm on Saturday April 1 at The Foundry. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.co.nz and are priced at $75 for VIP, $55 for General Admission and $30 for children and students.

ASTHMA AWARENESS
TIPS FOR ASTHMATICS DURING BUSH FIRES: • •
While the bush fires in Christchurch have sadly wreaked havoc on our environment and lives, they are also a timely reminder about health. •
T
he Asthma and Respiratory Foundation New Zealand urges those with asthma and respiratory conditions in the Christchurch area to be prepared – as bush fire smoke can trigger asthma attacks, allergies and shortness of breath. The smoke from bush fires contains small particles that can cause irritation to the lungs, eyes, nose and throat. People are advised to minimise their exposure to smoke and time spent outdoors. Windows and doors need to be kept closed, air vents blocked, and air conditioning set to a recycle setting.
•
•
Continue taking asthma preventer medication as prescribed. Always carry asthma reliever medication, and use it as soon as asthma symptoms are present. When possible use a spacer which enables more medication to be delivered into the lungs. If asthma reliever medication is not working, or is required every 2-3 hours or more, seek medical advice by calling 111 for an ambulance. Elderly people, children, and people working at the fire front are most at risk. Access help fast if someone appears unwell. If you don’t have an Asthma Action Plan or are unsure of what to do in an asthma emergency, follow the Asthma First Aid Procedure (www.asthmafoundation.org.nz)
It is important to remember that people who aren’t in affected areas are also at high risk, as winds can carry smoke and ash particles for long distances. Smoke and air pollution can linger long after the fires have subsided, so it is essential to remain prepared. The Asthma and Respiratory Foundation New Zealand is a not-for-profit organisation committed to those affected by asthma and respiratory illness. Free resources are available at www.asthmaandrespiratory.org.nz.

WINE
The North Canterbury
The North Canterbury Wine & Food Festival is returning on Sunday 12 March 2017 to bring together a day of quality food and wine from local North Canterbury producers. Set under the beautiful oaks of Glenmark Domain, the event welcomes all ages and features quirky pockets of delight to entertain both young and old.
I
t’s never been so local. The boutique festival will celebrate the harvest of local wine growers and the fresh, modern food offerings from passionate stallholders – featuring both well-known regulars and newcomers to the festival. More than 30 wineries from the region will be onsite to showcase their variety of wines as well as an eclectic line up of approximately 20 chefs, bakers, foragers and Waipara Valley Farmers’ Market vendors serving everything from slow-cooked meats, plant-based hot
dogs, foraged fruit sorbet and gelato to whitebait patties and a diverse range of dishes from North Canterbury’s booming hospitality community. ramemakers was born when the keen photographers were seeking perfection and couldn’t find a framer to do their work justice. So up their countryside driveway, just beyond Woodend Township, they began their own framing service in a purpose-built studio. “We take time to work with people to get the best from their artwork,” says Graham, a skilled framer utilising a wide range of frames and mounts for artwork and photographs, through to needlecraft works. The selection of glass includes the new UltraVue UV70 with clarity equivalent to museum glass, and a frame repair and picture-hanging service is offered. Their new baby is the impressive Pro4000 Canon printer. Being the first installed nationwide, it transforms photographs into real showpieces up to 1100mm in length. Always doing a test strip to get the right tonal range, there is a range of quality photograph papers, including German etching fine art paper. Top-

&FOOD FESTIVAL
WINE
The North Canterbury
The festival invites you to geek out with other food and wine lovers and producers throughout the day. It offers plenty of opportunities to expand your wine and food knowledge and become conscious of where it all comes from. The Lincoln University ConversatioNZ tent will pull together an amazing group of producers from near and far to share their wine and food experiences and encourage people to join the movement towards supporting local and nourishing your body with good stuff. There will be jazz, folk, singer-songwriter and laid back beats to act as background music to perfectly complement the tastings of food and wine and allow friends and families to hang out in a relaxing picnic-styled environment. Don’t
worry, there will still be opportunities to get up and move to the tunes. To lift the region back up following November’s devastating Earthquake, Qantas (lead partners of the festival) have come onboard to support North Canterbury with special charity raffle at the festival. Qantas will roam around under the oaks selling $2 ‘Red Raffle Tickets’ during the day. 100% of the funds raised from the raffle tickets will go towards The Mayoral Earthquake Fund to make sure the region continues to be a thriving destination. Tickets available online at Dash Tickets - Adult ticket: $35, Sober Drivers: $15 Under 18s: FREE. Visit www.ncwineandfood.co.nz, www.fb.com/ncwineandfood and www.instagram.com/ncwineandfood

hen it comes to Bridal Fashion Week, you’ve got to expect a certain amount of predictability in the style stakes – lace, tulle and ivory, of course.
1.
BOWS
Bows have come and gone over the years, but what makes their modern-day incarnation so unique, is that they are popping up in the most unexpected of places. For some at Bridal Fashion Week they showed up on a simple sash at the waistline, for others it was ‘go big or go home’ with oversized bows attached to sleeves, trains and necklines. While for others, the bow was the focal point of the dress’ design. As seen on: Houghton, Oscar de la Renta, Reem Acra, Sarah Nouri, Viktor & Rolf
3.
HALTER TOPS
Sometimes, however, you don’t want to cover it up and the halter top style dress offers the perfect alternative for when you want to show some summer time skin.
2.
LONG SLEEVES
This year brides are covering up with sleeves hanging past the hands making a dramatic statement on the catwalk as much as the aisle. As seen on: Ines di Santo, Julie Vino, Odylyne the Ceremony, Vera Wang
4.
PEARLS
Much like the classic knot of the bow, pearls too have been a style statement of yesteryear, with their modern incarnation offering more versatility for bridal styles than ever before. Rather than just featuring as jewellery, they’re taking centre stage, embroidered right into the dresses themselves along hemlines and bodices. As seen on: Lihi Hod, Lela Rose

ut Filipino food? Who can tell balut from their adobo? With more than 7,000 islands and a colourful history, this archipelago has some delicious dishes of its own and Filipino restaurants are having an “it food” moment which is quickly spreading around the world. The number of places where you can explore one of the original fusion cuisines is increasing rapidly. Described by Bloomberg as Pinoy food that is a mix of “among other things - Chinese, Spanish, Malay, and plenty of other Southeast Asian influences,” Filipino cuisine centres around the combination of sweet (tamis), sour (asim), and salty (alat). Andrew Zimmern, host of “Bizarre Foods” on the Travel Channel said when he predicted the rise of Filipino foods that everybody loves Chinese food, Thai food, Japanese food, and it’s all been exploited. “The Filipinos combined the best of all of that

There is no denying, Filipino food is on the rise. So why not give it a go?

The Spanish were a colonial power there for 500 years, and they left behind adobo and cooking in vinegar — techniques that, applied to those tropical Asian ingredients, are miraculous.” Though it’s been kept under wraps for many years – which most chalk up to a strong homecooked food culture – there is no denying, Filipino food is on the rise. T
he most important thing is to keep your cool when you’re pushing the adrenalin boundaries. Fortunately for the action-addicts out there, we’ve found a real show pony when it comes to staying fashionably hydrated. Say hello to the Corkcicle Canteen! A lean, mean beverage machine, this striking accessory boasts all the mod cons and it’s definitely not shy about being an over-achiever. With proprietary triple insulation, the Canteen loves a challenge – it can keep beverages cold for 25 hours or hot for 12 – in any location! This pretty little number is always in its best dressed, available in 14 colours and four sizes including the 25 ounces which holds a standard bottle of wine; the perfect way to transport a little tipple or two when you’re packing a picnic. The Canteen is definitely a hero in its own right, but it has an equally attractive and robust sibling – the Tumbler. Sip in style at home or on the go, and the tripleinsulated Tumbler won’t let you down when you want to keep your drink cool for nine hours or hot for three. Happy rough + tumble(r)!

Creativity and imagination are the only limits as to what can be achieved when it comes to mixing things up when the going becomes bland in your own kitchen. For the more adventurous eaters, why not pull out some online recipes for five-spice, curry, Bloody Mary, spicy peanut and scallion-bacon ketchup? If you’re out at the supermarket, why not look for black sesame tahini, habanero jam, ghee, Pomegranate Molasses, black garlic purée, date syrup, plum jam with chia seeds or beet salsa? How about Mexican hot chocolate spreads, Sambal Oelek or piri piri sauce, Mina Harissa and Frontera Adobo Sauces (Ancho, Chipotle and Guajillo varieties)? Or, if you’re out for dinner, why not try something completely unique? Perhaps try something completely crazy and order something you can’t pronounce!

amed after the three brothers who played an integral part in the history of Bishopdale, owning the first orchards in the area, Bishop Brothers Public House is committed to following on in the spirit of the settlers, welcoming patrons with their friendly atmosphere, great selection of beverages and exemplary service. The stunning refurbishment was completed in April last year. The bigger outdoor area is the ideal spot for a beer after work as it misses the easterly wind but captures the afternoon sun. Air conditioned with a carpark of free parking, it is the perfect location for a great Sunday session. An eclectic mixture of covers and dance music is played during summer and autumn between 3-6pm. Winners of the prestigious “NZ Beef and Lamb Excellence Award 2017, Bishop Brothers pride themselves on the quality of their meat. Premium Angus steaks are perfectly cooked by award winning chef Kathryn Ahu to bring out the unique flavours and texture. Treat yourself to one of their famous $15 lunches. Delicious options from the ocean, land and grill are complemented by a sweet dessert in the evening menu. The Bishop Brothers Public House is an ideal function venue. You can hire the entire restaurant, or talk to the owner about what suits you. Fundraising and quiz nights for clubs are also possible; they will supply the quizmaster and quizzes, if you supply the people. The Bishop Brothers Public House is a great place for a casual drink with friends with a regular jackpot, 18 state-ofthe-art poker machines and full TAB facilities.

here’s no better way to start the day than with a good, healthy breakfast, something we do exceptionally well at The Villas. But sometimes we just don’t seem to find the time or just run out of ideas for something that’s quick, easy and a bit different. It’s just too easy to fall back to the usual cereals and toast or a banana on the run. Give yourself just 10 minutes and a few simple ingredients, and you can rustle up a healthy treat before the family has to run out the door for work and school.
Ingredients (2 - 4 servings) • 1 or 2 large capsicum - rinsed, cored and sliced • 4 eggs • 1 or 2 medium sized tomatoes - thinly sliced • Salt and black pepper • Butter & a splash of olive oil.

udding kitchen ninjas can now apply for The Ōra King Next Generation Mentoring Programme (NextGen), which is offering the chance to work with and be mentored by some of New Zealand’s top culinary kingpins. Darren Wright (Chillingworth Road), Marc Soper (Wharekauhau Country Estate) and Michael Meredith (Merediths) form this year’s chef mentor panel and are committed to helping young chefs develop the essential skills needed to progress in New Zealand’s fast paced food service industry. Michael comments, “If any young and ambitious chefs are looking to progress their career, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend applying to take part in The Ōra King Next Generation mentoring programme.” The Ōra King NextGen mentoring programme is open to all chefs who have a passion to learn and develop. Ideally applicants will have a couple of years’ commercial kitchen experience and are either Commis or Chef de Partie level. Applications will be considered on a case by case basis however, so promising individuals with less experience but who are highly ambitious will be considered. Entries for the Ōra King NextGen mentoring programme are now open at www.orakingsalmon.co.nz/nextgeneration. They close on 12 March.
Cut the capsicum into four slices, about 10mm thick. Heat a non-stick frypan with a little butter and oil and fry for four mins without turning. Take a slice of tomato and place in the middle of each capsicum ring. Season with salt and pepper and fry for a further 1-2 minutes. Crack an egg into each ring and cook to your
liking. Serve with buttered sourdough toast and a slice or two of avocado for a healthy and nutritious start to your day. For the days when you’re out and about, drop in to The Villas and let us do the work while you catch up with friends or colleagues over a bite to eat and a coffee.

EASTERN ADVENTURE Mosaic by Simo is a Moroccan culinary adventure in Addington. A confluence of delectable tagines, salads and Mediterranean deli items offer customers a fresh taste sensation of authentic, aromatic spices and flavours.
L
ocal chef and food identity Simo, with his wife Anethea, established the renowned and popular Mosaic by Simo Mediterranean café and deli. Mosaic by Simo is famous for Simo’s tagines. The melt-in-yourmouth meat is slow cooked for hours in tagines – with steam rising to the top, dripping back down again and again, making the most delicious sauce, such as the Moroccan Lamb tagine with prunes and almonds - perfect with orange scented couscous. It is a complex infusion of fragrant herbs and spices, cooked in incremental layers. Ingredients and flavours including seasonal local produce take you on a journey. Lemons are preserved for three months to marinate the lemon chicken tagine. The popularity of this dish honours the effort in the layers of flavours. Simo’s generous and tasty platters are paradise for sharing, finished with traditional mint tea, cake or marinated orange and chocolate stuffed figs. Vegan and gluten-free diners have many exquisite choices, including building their own exotic salad and tasty tapas meal for under $15. Home entertainers and weekend picnickers flock to Mosaic by Simo during the weekend, while weekday office workers and friends are drawn in for an amazing Bocadillo – a Moroccan wrap bursting with flavour yet incredibly good value. Dine-in and takeaway are available along with a wonderful catering service. Many diners stay to enjoy the authentic restaurant or sunny courtyard, imagining the East while on a culinary journey that is Mosaic by Simo. Mosaic by Simo can be discovered at Addington Mall, 3/300 Lincoln Road. Visit www.mosaicbysimo.com and phone 338 2882. Now open seven days Monday to Saturday 9am-9pm and Sunday 12pm-9pm.

From small in size to large, floor based options, this decorative accent has transformative power, helping to tie in colours and introduce layers and texture to a space. From the boudoir to the balcony, there are options for every occasion and better yet, many of these are flexible by nature and will play to their strengths in different settings. The perfect companion to throws, the cooler temperatures beg for a combination of both. THE HEART OF THE HOME “If you are selling your house an outdated kitchen can put a buyer off,” says Adrian Kay of Dream Doors Christchurch.
K
itchens sell houses. One of the most important considerations house buyers will make is the state of the kitchen. If it is not looking its best, it instantly creates a perception that a new, expensive kitchen will be required.
“A simple kitchen facelift can make your house more sellable without the cost of a new kitchen,” Adrian suggests. Adrian and Tammy Kay, and their team specialise in kitchen facelifts. They also design and install new kitchens. As part of
the Dream Doors Kitchen franchise they are able to access national purchasing powers, and are able to offer the comfort of extended warranties and support. Giving an old kitchen a fresh look is a relatively simple process that is less expensive than a renovation or a new installation. It can significantly improve the visual impact a house has on potential buyers. “On the flipside, if you are buying a property, an outdated or tired kitchen can be a good way to barter down the asking price,” Adrian says. After purchase, “a kitchen facelift can immediately add value to your home”. Adrian and his team will support you throughout the kitchen facelift process, with advice and ideas on fittings and colours, benchtops and splashbacks, and more. Dream Doors Christchurch will be at the Home Show, March 24 – 26, at Horncastle Arena. If you are interested in renovating your kitchen make sure you stop by their stand or contact them. Phone 338 1081, email Adrian@dreamdoors.co.nz and follow them on Facebook at Dream Doors Christchurch.

A TRUE INNOVATION PIONEER
For a kitchen that is truly bespoke and personalised, there is no room for a ‘one size fits all’ approach. A return to first principles is essential and Blum New Zealand is a loyalist to this logic.
family owned brand with roots and a large presence in Austria, the company’s main product groups are lift mechanisms, hinges and drawer systems for furniture – in particular for kitchen furniture. Of the business’ focus, Marketing Consultant Sophie Beets comments, “We are always focused on the end consumer. We have an international identity but engage local designers. We also intentionally stick to three specialist product lines so we are at the forefront of innovation.” “We design for longevity and provide a lifetime guarantee for our mechanical products. We also have very strict quality control – less than one millimeter. It is mindboggling what our teams can do, all the while protecting the environment through sustainable business practices.” With geographic reach as far as Brazil and Poland, the business is fully embedded in these environments with a fundamental understanding of what makes its customers tick. A total of 6300 staff work for 28 Blum subsidiaries with New Zealand inheriting the outstanding brand six years ago. “In New Zealand, like abroad, the company philosophy revolves around the three core products and our attention to detail. We have actually conducted kitchen observations to streamline our products and what we do. “For example, our R&D team undertook a study of 10 sample New Zealand kitchens looking at how the end user interacts with the product, what ergonomic features they would benefit from when it comes to bending and straining, and how many are cooking in the kitchen on a regular basis.” The result of these examinations is a product that is truly unique to the user, combining good looks and superb functionality. Based in Woolston, Blum is a trade supplier yet has a showroom for anyone to explore. See and experience the Austrian made product range in person. For more information visit www.blum.com

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS
When you have a strong family heritage underpinning an innovative enterprise committed to Research and Development (R&D), you have a recipe for commercial success. Misco Joinery is emblematic of this fact.
E
stablished in 1988, this family-run business specialises in the design and manufacture of kitchens as well as laundries, wardrobes and study areas throughout Christchurch, North and South Canterbury and the West Coast of New Zealand. With its directors taking a hands-on role in the business, Misco Joinery continues to flourish thanks to its unwavering ambition, continuity of service and impressive capability. Accounts & Marketing Manager Penny Abell comments, “We do the whole package, from the design all the way through to installation. We use our own people to do the job so in effect we are a one stop shop. By doing it this way, we ensure everything is done to a very high standard.” Focused on the customer experience, Misco Joinery specialises in both new builds and renovations. The business is on the precipice of an exciting change with a move to Kaiapoi at the end of April. “We are so looking forward to expanding into our new, purpose-built 3500 square metre factory with state-of-theart automated machinery.” Needless to say, Misco Joinery remains destined for great things.

ome may say having a good looking kitchen is completely irrelevant if I spend little to no time in it, but I’d beg to differ. The aesthetic of a kitchen can introduce great personality into a home, fulfilling a role that is just as important as the living room or boudoir. To that end, I’ve made it my domestic mission to create a stand-out look that is all about the little details. From scissors to saucers, there is something for everyone in this kitchen collection. CREATING LIVING DREAMS The show home at 2 Carpenter Drive, The Woodlands, Prebbleton, is strong and striking on its corner section. Clad in James Hardie linea board with architectural series Onyx-honed feature bricks, A1Homes’ latest showhome in Christchurch clearly tells the story of the quality you can expect if you build with this housing company.
THE LATEST SHOWHOME IN CHRISTCHURCH CLEARLY TELLS THE STORY OF THE QUALITY YOU CAN EXPECT
Should customers choose to build with A1Homes the company handles the full build. “We believe building a new home should be one of the most rewarding experiences of anyone’s life. So when we are given charge of the build, we walk our customers through the journey, step by step, so they are aware of every part of their build, every part of the way from the concept plans through to completion. “Once a customer finds a preferred building site, we advise them to visit our nearest A1Homes’ showhome, such as this one at Prebbleton, to see just how much we can offer them for their budget.” Although A1Homes offers more than 60 architect-designed plans, there is the flexibility to mould these plans to meet specific requirements and the Prebbleton house is an example of this. Alternatively, the team can start from scratch or use your own design. A1Homes is also known for offering kitset houses where customers purchase all the materials they will need to construct a house and they contract the builders and subcontractors themselves. “Lots of our customers like to run the build themselves. That way they can save themselves thousands of dollars.” For more information on A1 Homes go to www.a1homes.co.nz or call Adam Edwards on 027 838 6077.

“STEP BEYOND WHAT’S TYPICAL AND FIND A POINT OF DIFFERENCE.” Simon Banks
S REDEFINING THE INNOVATION BOUNDARIES “Step beyond what’s typical and find a point of difference,” Simon Banks of High Country Homes says.
imon knows this can be a provocative statement, but for new home builds, quality of design and style should be as crucial to a new home project as the workmanship and materials. “I don’t believe people are entirely aware of what is possible in design today - just how many options there are. In addition to function, a new home needs an element of style that is unique to its owners. “People still aren’t venturing beyond hip roofs, mono claddings and gib groove reveals. They would do so much better for themselves to choose experienced craftsmen builders who can add a bit of flavour to their project.” The team at High Country Homes can offer expertise in concept, design and styling as well as balance in items such as insulation, heating, lighting, alternative power and off-grid requirements. High Country Homes are often finalists in NZ House of the Year. One new project just underway features a post and beam structure with schist and macrocarpa claddings. “There’s nothing typical about this house and we look forward to the development of this excellent project which is styled after a North American barn.” High Country Homes cover all over Canterbury including Christchurch city and work for people on all level of budgets. For more information on what High Country Homes can offer phone Simon directly on 027 222 4974 or 03 312 8312 or meet with him and Rachel for coffee with no obligation.
