TREES THAT COUNT

ANZAC day, Tuesday 25 April, is already a special occasion, honouring the strength and stoicism of the people that fought for our freedom.

I

t seems a fitting occasion therefore, that new life will be given an opportunity to thrive this ANZAC day thanks to the recently launched national native tree planting programme for Tūhaitara Coastal Park in North Canterbury - Trees That Count. With the support of Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust, Trees That Count are working tirelessly through a gifting programme to make their vision a reality. The Trust has a 200 year vision for the restoration of the park, which includes areas of major ecological and cultural significance and offers extensive educational and recreational opportunities. Tūhaitara Coastal Park covers approximately 700 hectares of land along the coastline from the Waimakariri River mouth to the settlement of Waikuku Beach. Stretching along the coast for 10.5 kilometres, it comprises many natural features of local, regional and national importance.

E N V I R O N M E N T A L

“ANZAC Day is a symbolic day for Kiwis; a day to commemorate and honour those who served New Zealand during the war,” says Joris de Bres, spokesperson for Trees That Count. “By bringing volunteers and donors together to plant on this important day of remembrance, we aim to promote the commitment and camaraderie of the ANZACs as we give back to our beautiful country. Our goal is to ensure a positive future for generations to come, with the fostering of new life in every native tree which is planted.” Donate or sign up to volunteer via www.treesthatcount.co.nz.

T HOT THIS EASTER A zesty citrus and spice-scented bun with a tasty blend of mixed fruits – this is the Hot Cross Bun judged the best, most delicious bun in Christchurch and North Canterbury in the recent Great New Zealand Hot Cross Bun Competition 2017.

12 March 30, 2017 Metropol

he hotly contested Top 10 Hot Cross Buns across New Zealand were announced in Wellington earlier this month with Canterbury’s Continental Bakery team delighted to be 4th in the country (after bakeries in Auckland, Hastings and Timaru). This was the first time for some years Continental Bakery, based in Rangiora, has entered the annual competition held by the Bakery Industry of New Zealand (BIANZ). Some weeks of trialling recipes, staff tastings and critiquing saw one recipe stand out from the rest – and the judges agreed. Continental Bakery and Patisserie Manager Marcus Braun believes what makes the Continental Hot Cross Buns so delicious is a special glaze and a new mix of different fruits including fresh lemon and orange zest. To be officially recognised as producing the best Hot Cross Buns In Christchurch and North Canterbury is an amazing achievement, Braun says. “We’re really excited about producing them now for our customers to enjoy.” The award-winning buns are available to savour with a coffee or pre-order purchase until 21 April from Continental Bakery (Percival Street, Rangiora), Kingsford Kitchen (Southbrook) or Mona Vale Pantry (Fendalton).

GETTING YOUR DUE

It’s that time of year when many of us have been pondering tax matters. One person ideally suited to help during any time of the year is mobile accountant Jason McFadden of McFadden Accounting Ltd.

D

espite a home office in the midst of a beautiful garden in Clarkville, Jason enjoys travelling to meet Canterbury business clients, often working for a fixed fee. It affords him a greater understanding of how client businesses operate. Personable and experienced, Jason is also a qualified lawyer. He counts this a great blessing when it comes to New Zealand’s constantly changing taxation and banking laws. “It’s true that countries can have a simple or a fair tax system, but they’re mutually exclusive.” The take-home message is that Kiwis have a fair system, but one weighted with complexity. Also contracted to Tax Link, Christchurch,

Jason prepares financial statements, income tax and GST returns, and helps smooth out jams with Inland Revenue. He advises on optimal business and tax structures. He is equally happy working for sole traders or larger enterprises, and content with a client’s preferred accounting system. This could be a shoe-box, or sophisticated cloud-based software. “Sometimes clients use accounting software to save time and accountant’s fees, but while sometimes successful, without proper training it can become counter-productive. “People can inadvertently miss out on taxation entitlements or make an investment blue by forgoing an accountant. As the fee is tax-deductible, this makes no sense,” Jason adds. Visit mcfaddenaccounting.nz

AN EXCITING

LINE UP OF PRODUCTIONS

DISCOVER THE EXCITING SHOWS FOR YOURSELF.

Community Theatre group Elmwood Players have finalised their exciting line up of productions for this year.

T

hree major productions will be staged, the first being the adult comedy, “All This Intimacy”. This will be followed by the adult drama, “The Thrill Of Love”, which tells the true story of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hung in Britain. The final production for the year will be the New Zealand comedy, “Heaven

Help Us!” The Players will also present a short season of one act plays mid-year, under the title “Mix ‘n Match”. “All This Intimacy”, directed by Doug Clarke and opening 19 April, is a comedy about friendship and lust and how the two don’t mix. Ty Greene is a normal guy with three very big problems. In an unprecedented (for him) run of promiscuity, Ty has managed to impregnate three women in the span of one week: His ex-girlfriend, his 40-something married nextdoor neighbour, and his 18 yearold student. In this edgy comedy Ty’s problems illuminate every triumph and failure of his life, and as the women in his world converge and figure out what’s happened, Ty realises that his life is adrift, and that he only has a limited time to try to piece it back together. Discover the exciting shows for yourself.

ridget Hanrahan, manager of the recently opened helloworld travel agency in Fendalton Village, says that ever since high school she was determined to be a travel consultant. “I’ve been in the travel industry for over 12 years now and I never tire of helping clients to turn their travel ideas and dreams into reality – and also hearing about their experiences and seeing their photos when they return.” With such a wealth of travel knowledge behind her, in both wholesale and retail travel, Bridget was ready to own her own business. Together with her husband Glenn she took the huge leap to create helloworld Fendalton. “We opened on 1 February. Yes – it’s certainly daunting setting up your own store, but it’s also super exciting and the feedback we have already had from the public about how convenient it is to have a travel agent in this area is very positive for our future here. We are at the beginning of our journey, making our way up Everest and we will make every step count. ” Bridget is supported at helloworld Fendalton by consultants Angela Blazey and Carolyn Parker. Angela has been in the travel industry for nine years and Carolyn for 23. “We value ourselves on the personal experience and understanding of travel locations and opportunities that we can offer our clients. It is very important to us to spend time with clients, building rapport with them and finding out what sorts of travel experiences will give them the most pleasure and satisfaction. This approach is at the heart of the helloworld philosophy and what makes it such a fresh brand.” helloworld Fendalton is located in the Fendalton Village Shopping Centre on the corner of Clyde and Ilam roads. THE SPIRIT OF TIMELESS STYLE

I

t is hard not to fall head over halls for the effortless glamour of Harman Grubiša. A visual and tactile delight, a remarkable triumph and a style statement so beautiful it is almost gratuitous, in its relatively short life, the brand has experienced tremendous glory since it burst onto the scene a couple of years ago. And rightly so.

The product of two visionaries Jess and Madeleine, Harman Grubiša is celebrating the release of its sixth ready-to-wear season, Rococo, and talks to Metropol about the journey to date, and what lies ahead. What does Harman Grubiša offer as a unique point of difference in the fashion landscape? There is an element of effortless glamour injected into your wardrobe from every Harman Grubiša piece. How did you each come to know that fashion was your passion and your forte? Jess: I can simply put this down to one moment – for me it was at a very young age watching a Christian Dior by Galliano Couture Show. From there I knew wanted to create in the world of fashion. Madeleine: My background has been very art focused; design, paint and art history. As time went on it became evident to me that design was inherent to who I am and I just wanted to explore creating beautiful, interesting, unique things.

16 March 30, 2017 Metropol

What was it like to be welcomed into the global family of Mercedes-Benz Presents designers at the 2016 New Zealand Fashion Week? It was an immense honour. We’ve always dreamed of opening Fashion Week. At two years into our business, it was a surreal moment for us – (personally and professionally), to say the least. What do you both consider to be the top three milestones for the brand to date? There have been so many for us – it has been an amazing ride, and we are so grateful for all the experiences we have had. If we had to pick three: Mercedes-Benz Presents Harman Grubiša and opening New Zealand Fashion Week 2016; being amongst some of the first New Zealand labels to be nominated for the International Woolmark Prize; our store - creating a home at 20 Jervois Road, Ponsonby Auckland for Harman Grubiša less than a year in.

W

e are surrounded by so many inspiring people on a daily basis ... A lot of the women we dress have inspiring stories– and we get to meet them through our store.

Photography by: Guy Coombes + Olivia Hemus

How would you sum up Harman Grubiša in a sentence? Effortless glamour with much personality. Who have been some of the most inspiring innovators on your journey? We have had the pleasure of working with Alison Veness and Rebecca Khoury (of Australian Vogue & 10 Magazine) as mentors. They are abundant in passion and support and the relationship has been both challenging and wonderful. We are surrounded by so many inspiring people on a daily basis however, a lot of the women we dress have inspiring stories– and we get to meet them through our store, which is such a wonderful aspect of our ‘job’! Can you share the narrative for your latest collection with us? Rococo is designed to be both refined and playful, as its namesake suggests. This season we focused on romantic silhouettes, pleating and rich colour and textures throughout. Think high shine metallic golds, mixed with blush and berry coloured sateens and a signature jacquard textile woven throughout. The range includes our well-loved statement coats, as well as a collaborative jewellery offering, made alongside local jeweller Jasmin Sparrow, and a return to footwear. Rococo is feminine and lush and romantic.

Without giving away any secrets, what lies in store for Harman Grubiša? We have so many secrets! That’s why Jess’ hair is so big! We are moving into international expansion this year – we have some very exciting editorial projects coming up and some wonderful events happening with our brand partners – MAC, Mercedes-Benz, Stephen Marr et al - our fashion family. Do you have a favourite mantra or philosophy? Madeleine: In fashion the only constant is change – often I can find myself a little overwhelmed amidst all the commotion and Jess will say to me ‘Tide comes in, tide goes out’ - which is too true. It’s a romantic way of saying, ‘you have to roll with the punches’ I guess.

vent organiser Mike Sheppard comments, “We are delighted we have been able to keep The Christmas Country Fete in Hurunui District, as they have been a great supporter over the years. We plan to maintain the very successful format, and quality stallholders that the Christmas Country Fete has been famous for.” This year’s event will usher in a fabulous new VIP tent, giving ticketholders access to the fete one hour earlier for an enjoyable shopping spree. They can then enjoy all day food and wine from White Tie Catering. “This will be an area to come back to allowing you to relax and recharge before heading out to shop again,” Mike explains. A sterling MC for the demonstrator tent is in the pipelines with a pending announcement to be made at www.thefete.co.nz as well as on Facebook. “We are also working to setup a men’s area this year for all the men who come along with wives and partners, so I encourage any men who are not sure, to put the day in their diary, as it will be a great day out for them as well.” With plenty of free parking and access available from two separate areas, what’s not to love about this year’s event?

AN

ADVENTUROUS STYLE STORY It would be fair to say that Jane Daniels is most certainly a jewel in the sartorial crown in Christchurch.

eld in the highest regard for its exquisite, timeless styles, the brand is taking on the world in an adventurous fashion for autumn and winter. Jane says, “My autumn winter 2017 collection is all about the opulence of old Imperial Russia. I was inspired by my recent travel through St Petersburg and Moscow. “I loved the extraordinary embellishments, fine craftsmanship of the costumes and architecture, and the hidden gems inside the Faberge eggs. Most of this has translated into the colour palette of the collection with a few hints of surprise in patterned linings, hand painting and beading and the beautiful braided detailing.” The stunning new collection features fabrics that are beautifully tactile and personally selected from Europe – alpaca, wool, velvet and silk play an important role, telling a luxurious story. “I have worked with colours like Prussian blue, military khaki, regiment red, ballet pink, deep purples and blues of the gemstones.” As the brand ambassador for Innovative Travel since 2007, Jane has a deep affinity for adventure and her most recent experience of Russia. She has taken this inspiration and used it to create magical details in her line – from hand sculptured buttons to embellished chokers and belts. “I love to create high-quality, timeless pieces with a stylish edge for a range of ages. All of my pieces are made in New Zealand and my team and I are currently working on getting our new online store up and running so watch this space.”

“One of the best projects with external providers, I’ve been involved with. The Ricoh staff were the reason for success...”

Buy the best quality coat you can afford. Generally, the more expensive a coat, the longer it will last due to its wool or down count. Cheap coats, made from cheap fabrics, never hang as well on the body and crumple more easily too. Check the label: Assuming you want to achieve warmth from your coat, if the fabric label reveals anything under 50 percent wool content - leave it on the hanger. Better still, a cashmere/wool mix delivers extra softness without the heavy bulk. Cashmere is the softest natural fibre against the skin and mixing it with wool is a wonderful way to reap the benefits without the hefty price tag of 100 percent cashmere. Shop with purpose: Consider your lifestyle. A lawyer going to court has very different coat needs to a busy mum running here, there and everywhere. And if you find yourself with mounting evening engagements, it’s worth investing in an evening coat to take you from the car to inside. This could see velvet or satin on the collar or cuffs. Here the wool count isn’t so important as it needs to be not too cumbersome once indoors. Consider colour: If there was ever a season to break out of the black, this is it. We have never seen so much colour and embellishment on jackets and coats. A bright coat is also an easy fix to lift even the blackest of wardrobes.

5.

Study the collar and shape: This can be the deciding factor as to whether a coat is ‘the one’. A long-line slim lapel can balance out a fuller bust and a wider collar can give shape to a petite or very tall frame. Gut feel is everything when it comes to coats. If it doesn’t feel right, leave it in the shop. But if you find yourself doing a little jump for joy when trying it on, clutch it firmly with both hands and head straight to the sales counter. Do not pass go. Finding the perfect coat can be akin to finding the perfect man - in definite short supply! Bridget Hope is the wardrobe director for Magpie Style – a personalised fashion showroom.

WRAP UP Winter has so many positives when it comes to fashion – from luxurious fabrics to fabulous layers, the chillier temperatures are the perfect time to experiment with both.

K

owtow’s Autumn Winter knitwear range has officially launched and is available to shop now with stunning pieces that tick both boxes. The range is available in three colour ways from the down-to-earth hue of dark oatmeal to the striking aesthetics of black and yellow. The Queen of Hollywood herself – Reese Witherspoon - brought the yellow Kowtow knit on her recent trip to New Zealand. As per all its clothing, Kowtow’s knitwear is made from 100 percent sustainable organic cotton and under ethical Fairtrade certified conditions; the brand ensures workers across the production chain have sustainable livelihoods.

Owner Ali is the buyer and has the expertise and eye for bringing in lines that provide a stunning selection of choices for every occasion. “We are proud of offering beautiful clothes that are not mass produced – we stock everything from casual-wear to wedding attire in all different colours and gorgeous fabrics including Italian silk and very soft, supple cotton.” Favouites for the season include Not Your Daughter’s Jeans, which are particularly striking when paired with the delicate looking yet very robust Optimum Knitwear made in New Zealand. “We also have a range of puffer jackets that are popular.” Certainly the latter is a look straight off the international catwalks! Offering top to toe ensembles, Ali says her advice to clients is to come in and get things that match and complement each other. “A complete look is best achieved when pieces are bought together otherwise people can get stuck with a piece they can never match and then it dates.” Salted Ink, Lisette L pants and Evas Sunday – a fan favourite thanks to its use of natural fibres – are all also on offer at Made in the Shade. A HOME FOR

EXCEPTIONAL CREATIVITY

Framemakers and Ellbee Crafts are the two creative sides to Graham and Lynn Barr’s home business.

F

ramemakers was born when the keen photographers were seeking perfection and couldn’t find a framer to do their work justice. So up their countryside driveway, just beyond Woodend Township, they began their own framing service in a purpose-built studio. “We take time to work with people to get the best from their artwork,” says Graham, a skilled framer utilising a wide range of frames and mounts for artwork and photographs, through to needlecraft works. The selection of glass includes the new UltraVue UV70 with clarity equivalent to museum glass, and a frame repair and picturehanging service is offered. Their new baby is the impressive Pro4000 Canon printer. Being the first installed nationwide, it transforms photographs into real showpieces up to 1100mm in length. The business always does a test strip to get the right tonal range, and there is a range of quality photograph papers, including German etching fine art paper. Top-of-the-range Breathing Color canvas is also an option. Fronting the crafting section Lynn says, “I’ve always been a

crafter, so two years ago Ellbee Crafts became a natural extension to the business”. Scrapbooking supplies, stencils, ribbons and bling right through to dies, as well as Lynn’s own embellishments and greeting cards, make an impressive display. She teaches card making, mixed media and crafting techniques, welcoming anyone to join her emailing list for upcoming classes. Their customers, who are South Island-wide, enjoy taking their time, chatting with the Barrs for inspiration. Visit 137 Main North Road, Woodend. rent and Carolyn Allison, originally from Southland, have owned the café for nine years, but now friendly Culverden is home. “Carolyn is our passionate chef, and Shobna is the baker extraordinaire,” Trent says. “We make 90 percent of our food, which we’ve perfected over the years.” The range is diverse, from the big breakfast and homemade muesli to enticingly presented, freshly made cabinet food, blackboard menu fare, and fantastic Piazza D’Oro coffee. The salmon soufflé is now too popular to remove from the menu, and there’s a rotation of delicious desserts – but Trent assures their carrot cake disappears the fastest. The Blue Cod pan fried with herbs and juicy steak sandwiches are favourites too. Carolyn also volunteers as a firefighter and the energetic couple perform with the Amuri Players - their community support and involvement, including local rugby, is certainly alive with many a birthday, wedding, meeting and function being hosted or catered for. “We’re very flexible. Everyone is well looked after including glutenfree, dairy free or vegetarians,” Trent says. There’s seating for up to 70 inside, and 40 in the tree-shaded garden. Red Post Café is open Friday nights for pizza – Shobna also cooks her creative curry of the moment these nights. Stop by Red Post Café, State Highway 7, Culverden. Open 8am-5pm from Monday to Thursday, 8am- 8pm on Friday and 8am-5.30pm Saturdays and Sundays. Phone 03 315 8492 or visit Facebook.

RECIPES FOOD WINE BARS & CAFÉS RESTAURANTS

SAUSAGE By Nicholas Henare

G For centuries we’ve had the illustrious sausage. One of humanities oldest prepared foods, every country in the world has their take on it.

rowing up in New Zealand in the 70s, the ‘go to’ was a real beef sausage on the BBQ fried until it resembled a stick of charcoal and pretty much tasted the same. The occasional foray into “something exotic” in the way of a “sausage casserole” or “devilled sausage” dish had its place too. But oh, how far we have come New Zealand! With the increase in cultures and the access to overseas cuisine, the variations of the sausage we now eat are numerous. Greg Neal, Retail Marketing

Manager for Alliance Meats who has been in the meat industry for thirty years, comments of the industry: “The meat industry is a great industry to work in with competition amongst butchers trying to find the next new flavour to give them an edge over their rivals. “Each year Retail Meat New Zealand runs a competition to find the sausage that is a stand out above the rest and butchers from all around the country vie for the honour of being able to promote that they are a competition winner.” Dropping down to my favourite butcher, Peter Timbs, I caught up with Nick Buist, Business Development Manager, and asked him what was the most underrated sausage. “Currently I believe our Spanish Sausage is the most under rated of all kinds, as it is a timeless classic that has been produced by us for countless years and still has a place. I believe it’s dwindled due to the success of our other gold medal winning sausages such as Jalapeño, Pork Leek and Lemon, and the Wild Venison and Plum.” So here’s to the humble sausage. An underrated player in our modern-day cuisine.

I Probably…

a Great Little Ristorante

In a wash of ordinary, there is an extraordinary Italian cuisine innovator that is romancing senses with its down-to-earth yet very charming demeanour. Say a warm hello to the culinary Casanova that is Formaggio’s.

ts tongue in cheek new strapline “probably” which follows suit after any one of its well-deserved accolades, such as being in the Top 20 on Trip Advisor, goes hand-in-hand with the selfdeprecating nature of the business and its staff. Humility aside, there is nothing humble about the cuisine – it is a loud and proud showstopper, and certainly not shy about its ability to make grown men cry with joy. Ok, not quite, but you get the drift. In a cube-esque white building at 150 Colombo Street is where the magic takes place, and one thing’s for sure, diners at Formaggio’s best be prepared to have their socks rocked off by fresh, fulsome and fabulous fare. Every considered and carefully selected dish has a viticultural soulmate – both the food and wine lists are to die for. While having an ‘I don’t want this to end’ moment with your plate, the exuberant sounds of Pavarotti will serenade you. Meanwhile, the highly skilled kitchen team led by Simon, who was trained in Germany and has decades of experience, whips up dish after dish of what can only be described as distinctly honest, good looking and great tasting food. It’s a three-charm offensive, what’s not to love? If you’ve yet to discover the true taste of Italy, Formaggio’s with its magnetic “F” sign and stylized geraniums beckons you in to experience sensational flavours. Although the modest boss Damien would say there’s “probably” a very good chance you’ll fall truly, madly, deeply in love, we’d say with conviction, it’s a guarantee.

L For an authentic Argentinian-style dining experience

ocated in plush Hotel Montreal, the restaurant offers an effortlessly elegant atmosphere, and a spacious al fresco dining area. With an emphasis on shared plates and tapas, one of Flavien’s signature dishes is the Rotisserie Lechon de leche Empanadas. “This is a filled pastry dish with roasted suckling pig, so it’s beautifully soft and tender, cooked on our outdoor rotisserie and served with green chimichurri – a well-loved traditional Argentinian sauce.” For an authentic Argentinian-style dining experience, the Parilla Argentina for Two is beautifully presented on a wooden board, with a choice of two meats from the grill, along with chicken winglets, lamb sausages, patatas bravas, garden salad, vegetables, and four sauces. “Diners are always wowed by this dish.” A must-try on the sweets menu is the Churros with Rum Dulce de Leche – Argentinian-style donuts, with rum caramel sauce. The new breakfast menu (served from 6:30am-11:00am) is also receiving great feedback, Flavien says, from French crepes with mixed berry compote, berry glaze and crème chantily, to the ‘Pain Perdu’ – traditional Brioche French Toast, served with caramelised banana and salted caramel sauce. Just a short stroll from North Hagley Park and Victoria Street, the central location also provides plenty of on-site parking, and is the perfect spot to meet with friends for post-event hot chocolates and churros.

he Monday Room has operated as a restaurant for over a year now. With owner Joel Christian and head chef Hannah Cooper-Grieve at the helm, the restaurant is well established as the home of shared European dining in Christchurch. Stop in during the week to experience one of the city’s best lunch menus, complete with entrees, mains, desserts, and a cocktail list available until 3pm. The evening menu is all about sharing. The entrees are a mix of traditional items such as Beef Tartare and Duck Parfait, and the more contemporary Vegan Buffalo Wings. For the main course, guests are encouraged to build a meal to share from the middle of the table, much like dinner at mums on a Sunday night. Every night there is a banquet menu on offer – “Trust the Chef” - where your entrees and mains are sent by the chef. With by far the most expansive cocktail list in the city, some of the best desserts in the country, and staff members who are as passionate about the restaurant as they are knowledgeable of their products; The Monday Room is a must visit. Stay tuned for the restaurant relocating to bigger and better premises later in the year.

DELICIOUS DROPS FROM

SUN-SOAKED LAND Kono NZ is a family owned Māori food and beverage provider. A connection with the land and sea is at the heart of Māori identity, and from this, Kono aspires to be the world’s leading indigenous food and beverage provider.

A

otearoa New Zealand is rich in natural resources which provide ideal growing conditions to make fabulous wines. With such a strong, spiritual connection to the land, Kono is committed to employing sustainable methods that are gentle on the environment but do not compromise the quality of all its products. From a vineyard in the Awatere Valley come exceptional grapes and even more exceptional wines. Tohu Wines are a sign (Tohu means “sign”) of integrity – to the

land, and to the quality of wines that reflect the land. Outstanding in this family of wines are those that are of such high quality they deserve the name “Kaumātua”. A Kaumātua is a respected elder of the Whanau who is recognised for the significant contribution they make to their community. In the Kaumātua Reserve range of wines are Rore Reserve Marlborough Pinot Noir; Raiha Reserve Limited Release Noble Riesling; Hemi Reserve Marlborough Chardonnay, and

Mugwi Reserve Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. These multi-award winning wines are available New Zealand wide, and internationally. Tohu, one of several Kono brands, was the world’s first Māori owned wine company. It now has an international reputation for producing premium wines. The Kono philosophy is that wine should encapsulate a place and a time. In the sun-soaked heart of Marlborough, it’s likely Kono will continue to produce awardwinning wines for a long, long time.

Kaumātua Reserve Range Our reserve wines are each named in honour of a kaumātua (elder) of our whānau.

The best option is to find a relaxed spot in town where you can choose something that soothes, pleases and even challenges the palate. And you can find just that at The Villas, a relaxed spot where you can indulge yourself and enjoy a selection of expertly crafted ales and delicious food to treat your taste buds.

C

ase in point is the scrumptious southern superfoods by the makers of the world’s top Pinot Noir – Crown Range Cellar. Their new range is made from South Island blackcurrants and Manuka Honey – the perfect ingredients for bliss balls! With the health-giving properties of Manuka honey already widely-known, New Zealand blackcurrants have been shown to have the highest level of anthocyanins and antioxidants in the world, outperforming acai, goji, pomegranate, blueberry and more in terms of antioxidant potency. High in Vitamin C, blackcurrants are also known to support cardiovascular and brain function, immunity, circulation, vision, and muscle performance and recovery. Also in the range are two versatile drinks; blackcurrant and Manuka and Manuka and lemon, that can be enjoyed hot or cold. Try mixing up an icy glass for a refreshing mid-afternoon boost or sip a steaming mug before bed. With no added sugar and just a touch of apple cider vinegar, each bottle makes eight to nine drinks. Available at www.crownrangecellar.com, these new delights will most definitely steal your heart.

P

ark yourselves in the back bar or beer garden where you can order up a tasting tray of four craft beers of the day. There will generally be three from Emerson’s Brewery and one ‘barman’s choice’ guest beer to sample. The 4th tap changes often so there are always new flavours to sample. The ‘Of Grain’ platter is the perfect partner for a beer tasting. It comprises of a generous selection of treats including pulled pork balls, smoked tomato relish mouse traps, Dhal wadi (spiced split pea patty), stuffed jalapenos, chicken skewers and spiced wedges with sour cream. T INDULGE YOUR SWEET TOOTH Patisserie Yahagi is a stunning shop inside the tiny arcade at Church Corner Mall in Upper Riccarton. While it is in a discreet location given there aren’t any signs on Riccarton Road, you can’t miss out on the opportunity to find awardwinning, beautiful desserts.

New Zealand’s

Healthiest

Menu

here are many kinds of gorgeous and mouth-watering desserts and cakes in Patisserie Yahagi. One of them is “Opera” which is named after the Opera House in Paris. Some customers from Sydney once stated, “This shop’s Opera is better than the one in Lindt Cafe in Sydney!” Patisserie Yahagi’s Opera is made from layers of coffee butter cream, chocolate ganache and almond sponges (also gluten free!) It has been sold ever since Patisserie Yahagi opened in 2009 and has become one of the best sellers in the shop. When Patisserie Yahagi started to sell the Opera, Eri Yahagi, the owner, had not seen Opera sold in Christchurch although it is a very famous cake all over the world. As she wanted people in Christchurch to know the true Opera, she entered her Opera into the Café Dessert Section of the New Zealand Bakery of the Year in 2010 and won the Gold Award. But the Gold Award winning Opera was not only made for the competition - they are usually available in the shop too! This award-winning quality is normal for Patisserie Yahagi and you can taste these world-class desserts at your home at any time. Patisserie Yahagi has more than 15 kinds of other desserts and cakes in the cabinet every day – a very unique combination to the types of desserts seen in other bakeries and cafes. You will definitely be rewarded for stepping into the unknown arcade to try jewel-like desserts and cakes!

WE’VE BEEN WATCHING THIS DASHING HUE WORKING ITS MAGIC ALL OVER THE STYLE SHOW

ROSE TINTED STYLE By Kate Pierson

The quintessential colour for shabby chic and cottage chic, rose quartz creates feelings of warmth and intimacy in a space. When it earned the in-demand top spot as ‘Pantone’s Colour of The Year’ in 2016, the company decreed it was an “antidote to modern-day stresses”.

DON’T SHY AWAY FROM SEEING YOUR HOME LIFE THROUGH ROSE TINTED STYLE; THE COLOUR PROMISES CALM AND TRANQUILITY.

F

ast forward a year, and rose quartz is still holding its own on the home décor scene. A social butterfly on the colour spectrum, it pairs effortlessly with all finishes – from matte to metallic – and comes alive when partnered with other mid-tones. Think

delicious rich browns, greens, purples and yellows and other pinky shades. We’ve been watching this dashing hue working its magic all over the style show and to that end, have prepared a ‘shop the look’ of soft and hard furnishings for your home that pay tribute to the rose colour range.

While it has long been synonymous with décor belonging to little girls, there is a way to appropriate the colour so that it finds a home in the world of us grown up kids. A less is more approach is sensible to avoid a look that is saccharine – light touches in the form of accents are a strategic way forward. Don’t shy away from seeing your home life through rose tinted style; the colour promises calm and tranquility. And let’s be honest, we can all use more of that! WALLACE COTTON MONGOLIAN FUR CUSHION

THE BEAUTY OF A STRIKING BATHROOM Let’s face it – a bathroom without the “wow” factor doesn’t cut it anymore. These days bathrooms are no longer just places to get clean. Neither are they hidden and out of sight. Instead they have become focal points of a home.

EVERYONE DESERVES A LITTLE PAMPERING AND THERE IS NO LIMIT TO THE POSSIBILITIES WITH A COMBINATION OF STUNNING NEW PRODUCTS AND INNOVATIVE DESIGN.

The variety of mirrors now available for bathrooms is virtually limitless. A backlit mirror with LED lights gleaming out across the wall can transform any bathroom into a glamorous sanctuary. On the other hand, opulently-framed ovals or rectangles can create an elegant, classic look while metallic frames might be preferred for their shimmer and modernity. “Many people opt for clean, simple often frameless mirrors with bevelled edges or multipanels. These styles work particularly well with tiled walls. “When it comes to bathroom design, glass splash backs, which we also provide, are a great idea, and they can be painted to match the room. We also recommend the use of mirror demisters. They keep mirrors clear of condensation which increases longevity and less cleaning is required.” Eco Frame and Mirror offers a free measure and quote service where Manager Dan can visit your home and bring samples to discuss mirrors and splash back ideas with you. This is the best way to get a feel for the space to create a timeless mirror that best suits the needs of the room. The business also provides a specialist quake proof hanging service known as ‘Art Hang’, where the team will hang anything such as bedheads, artworks, sculptures and of course mirrors – regardless of where they were purchased. I With guest contributor Kerry Jackson, Founder & Curator MM Linen

t is this fact, in tandem with its effortlessly chic collections, that makes MM Linen so special. A New Zealand made leader in luxe linens and accents for the bedroom and home, the globally recognised and celebrated brand is characterised by quality, longevity and impeccable taste. As a new season dawns, MM Linen Founder Kerry Jackson generously takes Metropol readers on a journey to discover and explore the colours and fabrics that showcase the styles of today and tomorrow.

CREATING A STYLISH SANCTUARY

As the tides of change sweep in and out, redefining the home décor landscape and what’s in vogue, creating classic furnishings and accents requires an extraordinary gift that few designers are blessed with.

“Pure linen is my absolute fave...natural and relaxed” - Kerry

IN LOVE WITH LAYERS

LIVABLE HUES FOR THE HOME From the romantic femininity of Shadow Gray (Pantone 16-1509) to the strong yet refreshing Deep Teal (Pantone 19-4914), MM Linen has harnessed the potential of these timeless Pantones. Ether (Pantone 14-4506), soft grey and natural are captured in this minimalist, luxurious collection of Neko Throws and Cushions, an important part of a timeless homeware range synonymous with elegance and sophistication. “For the bedroom, calm instead of energising colours encourage relaxation and sleep, and so does a good book!” Kerry says.

MM Linen perfectly encapsulates the philosophy that layers add interest. A stunning confluence of fundamentals and accents, the brand simplifies the process to create layers in your space. While it may be full of striking features, a room’s aesthetic stands to fall flat and look one dimensional if it lacks layers. For example, a variation of elements on a bed can create a statement piece that truly personifies functional beauty. Starting with even the most minimalist linens, add points of interest and inspiration through complementary but contrasting colours or fabrics. Add pops of colour to a decadent bedspread – embrace an au naturel or even elegant unkempt look - and drape a textured throw over the bed runner. “The ultimate investment for the ‘inside’ layer to surround yourself in comfort is a sumptuous goosedown duvet inner and pillows - so light but cosy!” Kerry says.

March Madness & April Planning March is always a frantic part of the year for me. In fact, if I’m completely honest, it’s a mixture of chaos, manic activity and stress. As a franchise, we work to a financial year that completes on March 31st and the irony of an April 1st restart has always seemed appropriate. It’s no surprise we endeavour to complete the year strongly, driven by an oldfashioned mix of personal pride, rigid deadlines and a desire to do the best possible job for our clients. We are not alone: our industry competes for the hardto-wear ‘best in the business’ label and as a leader I’m driven by the credibility this delivers as well as opportunities for our company and our people.

It’s also the time of year where we commence business planning and after 23 years of this, coupled with the quarterly reviews and numerous associated meetings, you can see why March is a little mad. It’s not just planning an effective business session with all the associated collateral, it’s using it as an opportunity to engage and connect at a deeper level with your people. I’ve navigated my way through many different types of plans – massive forms that you filled with dreams and goals, as well as single sheets that had a focus on facts, numbers and stats – and all of them had their place. Personally, I favour a mixture of both, and because I respond well to the accountability a good plan encourages, I am an absolute advocate of their benefits in business and life. After years of experimentation, I’ve come to the following conclusions regardless of the status of the plan. 1. It’s better to have a plan than not. No one wants to just float. At best, you could go forward, but the likelihood is you’ll go

nowhere … or backward. So, get a plan. It doesn’t have to be fancy; the priority is to have one, not how it looks. 2. One plan doesn’t fit all and as a business owner I’ve got to try and work within a number of frameworks and across lots of different people’s abilities. It’s a big ask at times! I guess the catchcry here is ‘patience and perseverance’. 3. We can all be open to being better and a plan gives you the chance to explore that in both a singular and a consultative manner. You can look at it and work on it quietly on your own or with others. 4. Our dreams fuel our outcomes. Dream big or dream small; I’m told the world needs more dreamers because they push both boundaries and beliefs. I refer to these four principle as my four truths when it comes business planning. Hopefully, in two weeks’ time I’ll bring them all to the table as we guide our entire company forward with this year’s Business Planning. Then it’s about watching the plan become a set of actions; that’s where the real beauty starts. Fingers crossed.

ARTISTIC EXPRESSION FOR EVERY SPACE When Jon Dong was selling his house in Auckland, to make the move to Christchurch, he decided to update the artwork in the house. However, he was soon faced with limited and expensive options. From that, Felix Paintings was created.

When looking for art for your home, office, showroom, or any size commercial project, it has the style, genre and palette to suit every décor and taste. “It really does depend on what you like, and what you need,” Jon says. aluminium sheet, and then hand painted. These are brightly coloured, intricate designs that are durable. They can be hung inside or even outside in some circumstances such as a covered BBQ area. In the Coppell Place store, there are a vast number of oil paintings, 3D blockart canvases, framed silk artworks and textured prints. There are also thousands of designs available in an online database. Felix Paintings rents and sells beautiful artworks to many commercial enterprises,

including construction companies for new builds, interior designers, hotels and motels and corporate offices. Jon is ideally placed to offer advice and unique pieces of art for your home or office. He will make a visual representation of the artworks in your home, or if you are serious about buying new art he will visit your home or office and help you select just the right pieces. B INTEGRITY IN ACTION

Bowers Builders Limited is a wellestablished Canterbury business that specialises in lifting and re-levelling houses, using the latest equipment to re-pile, lay new foundations, and do remedial work.

uilder and Director Johnnie Bowers has a lifetime of experience renovating houses. He and his wife, Managing Director Amanda Bowers, meet every client and work closely with them to make every project as stress free as possible. A significant portion of what the company has been doing recently is remedial work on house foundations. After the Christchurch earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, foundation work was essential to many house repairs. Unfortunately, since then, many of the repairs on foundations have been done incorrectly, so not only is the Bowers team taking on new foundation repair work, the team is also fielding calls from homeowners who need a substandard job fixed. “It’s quite common, and we are able to fix it for you,” Amanda says. Whether new repair or remedial work to your home’s foundation is required, Amanda and Johnnie will make a full assessment and provide a brief report of the damage and a comprehensive quote for the work that needs to be done. Their aim is always to complete the work in the timeframe given, and to the highest possible standard. Bowers Builders offers the reassurance of being Licenced Building Practitioners (LBP) with a Site 2 Licence. The team is also a member of the Certified Builders Association and Site Safe. hen asked how she does it, she pauses. That’s her favourite bit of the whole home-staging exercise. She can immediately visualise what’s required, colour and style-wise, whether character furnishings or starkly modern; quirky or laid back. She’ll look at how a space needs to flow. “I always make sure furniture isn’t going to be in the way, and that it’s perfect in scale and size for the room,” Pam says. “I also think rooms sometimes define themselves better with a light or dark treatment.” She offers the whole presentation job, from renting out the whole house-lot of furniture, linens, artwork and flowers, to working on several rooms, or on a smaller scale as well as providing a declutter service. The results speak for themselves. Pam has staged dwellings which had previously loitered on the market for months, to then get snapped up quickly for thousands more than asking price. When her ‘haulage men’ arrive to retrieve the furnishings, they’re often wowed at how the final staging lifted the home. “Even when I retire, my son and I plan to renovate houses. I love furnishing character places, as well as feathering the new-build nests since the quakes. I’ve seen an upsurge in character homes coming onto the market in recent months.”

On 2 April from 11am – 4pm, West Melton School will take food and fun to a whole new level at its highly anticipated Country Fete.

he event will be showcasing local produce including preserves and baking and a wide variety of food options. With over 120 stalls there’s bound to be something for everyone including crafts, homewares, clothing, health and beauty and plants. Children will be well entertained with cute animals; a white elephant stall; books; crazy games and challenges for all ages, the added quirky twist is a pumpkin growing competition. Throughout the day there will be fantastic local West Melton and Canterbury entertainment which will have visitors smiling. This heart-warming, community event celebrating harvest is committed to raising funds for West Melton School for new play areas, shade sails and seating to complete the new building. A group of parents have been working tirelessly on this event for over nine months and are looking forward to a successful day. Some of the older school children will be running their own stalls and every year group in the school is involved with a stall in some way. Additionally, all of the children have helped to design tea towels which will be for sale on the day. The West Melton School community, as with all Canterbury communities, knows how tough it is after earthquakes and so have generously decided to support some Kaikoura stallholders – a very worthy cause, along with a couple of other local charities such as Maddie Collins, Plunket and Play Centre. Get down to West Melton Country Fete on Sunday 2 April to celebrate harvest and for a fun family day out. ‘A diamond in the rough’ is a very apt expression for new works at the Christchurch Art Gallery by internationally acclaimed New Zealand jeweller Lisa Walker. The collection is entitled 0+0=0.

W

alker’s audaciously imagined works aren’t conventional boxes tickers, they comfortably own the ‘abstract’ title like a badge of honour, and rightly so. Exploring untraditional contours and working with increasingly unlikely materials – animal skins, children’s toys, even kitchen utensils, her work toys with eccentric colour, composition and notional irony. The winner of the prestigious Françoise van den Bosch Award in 2010 and an Arts Foundation Laureate, Walker’s non-conformist style and methodology is widely celebrated. Her work is best described by Curator Felicity Milburn who states, “It might be tempting to say that Lisa Walker makes jewellery out of any old thing – but it isn’t true. “The eclectic objects that form her distinctive necklaces, brooches and other body-adornments are meticulously selected and shrewdly modified before they see the light of day. She salvages her materials from an unlikely cornucopia of sources – re-presenting objects such as car parts, animal skins even kitchen utensils through the frame of body adornment’s long history.” Explore Walker’s boundless imagination for yourself. Her 0+0=0 exhibition runs until 2 April.
