At face value, an urban space is classified a city once its inhabitants reach 50,000. The fact that this means that people are what make a city – both in the literal and figurative sense – isn’t lost on our team here at Metropol. We’ve long recognised the importance of people to our Christchurch identity because, although we’re drawn to landscapes and architecture, it’s the people that we engage with. In recognition of this fact, we’ve been profiling some of the people behind our city; the movers, the shakers and the magic makers. What makes them tick – both commercially and emotionally; what exciting new ventures do they have in the commercial pipelines and, how do they fill their weekends? This issue we talk to Mike Pero’s son Aaron about his own real estate moves, Maree Lucas about putting her event planning powers to the very worthy Ronald McDonald House fashion show and Dr Sue Bagshaw about her $10 million goal to cement a new multimillion dollar youth hub for the CBD. Not to mention, we caught up with living legend Lionel Richie during his New Zealand tour and interviewed one of the country’s most sartorial elite, our cover model this issue, Karen Walker. Christchurch is filled with incredibly inspiring people and we think Metropol is an incredible vehicle to share their success with you. known as Guy Ellis. They tell a visual story incorporating native plants and birds, Maori design motifs, and a Lyttelton inspired urban scene featuring a skateboarder. Dcypher had fellow DTR Crew artists – Wongi, Ikarus and Jacob Yikes – assisting him on the job. Christchurch City Council project manager, Jon Malis, says the murals reflect the history of Lyttelton and the site and appeal directly to the youth of the area who are the primary users of the park. The artworks are a key element of the $375,000 site upgrade, which includes extensive playground landscaping, repairs to the park’s earthquake-damaged heritage walls, and the skate park being rebuilt. An acclaimed muralist, Dcypher’s work features in the Spectrum Street Art Show and several murals around Christchurch, along with international street art festivals, cityscapes, museums and high-profile advertising campaigns. His work has also been showcased in Brazil, New Zealand and the United States, and he was recently invited to participate in painting the World’s Largest Graffiti Wall for the Guinness Book of World Records in Dubai. Most impressive of all however, is that the prodigiously talented Dcypher has truly hit the big time, having developed mural art works specifically for the TV shows, Sons of Anarchy, Silicon Valley and NCIS.

Accounting Magic “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic,” Arthur C Clark once said. Thankfully, if you are struggling with your small business paperwork, you can now pack away your Gandalf robes because Jason McFadden of McFadden Accounting says that advanced technology is now both mainstream and userfriendly when it comes to accounting software.

pproaching wizard status himself, Jason has seen the rise and rise of technology in his 30 years of accounting and remembers the day the first computer came through the corporate front door. Now IRD is front-footing technology and, from 1 April 2018, will require businesses to electronically file their pay roll on every employee payday of the year. The most popular accounting software packages are available for about $600 per annum. You or your accountant can run it, or a combination of you both. The cost can be offset through time saved at your accountant, but it depends on your business as to whether it really is a cost effective and suitable choice. “Firstly, always talk to your accountant before you decide to buy,” Jason says. There are different features available, and part-time, low-transaction, or nostaff businesses can often do very well sticking with a simple cash book, while others keep organised with Excel. Secondly, if you do purchase, get your accountant to help set it up for your business. Finally, learn how to use it properly and code transactions accurately, Jason says. “The principle of garbage in garbage out is fundamental to success with your software.”

is one business that has truly been built to last. Established in 1893 by Samuel Irvine

McHarg, it is one of the oldest businesses in Christchurch still owned and operated by the founding family, an illustrious occasion which was marked with a cocktail party last month for 150 clients, suppliers, staff and friends. A well-known identity in the New Zealand industry, Stuart McHarg has run the business since he was 18 years old and continues to work in the business with his wife Christine. Their sons – the fourth generation of McHargs – General Manager Johnny McHarg and Factory Manager Tim McHarg, continue to run the business, which offers traditional book binding and the largest commercial print finishing operation in New Zealand. Moving with the times has enabled McHargs to stay ahead of the commercial game and, during the past three decades it has become fully automated, using modern folding, collating, guillotining, stapling, wiro and perfect binding, with continual investment in the latest machinery supporting these abilities. Binding and restoring books is a tradition and a skill which has earned the company recognition at the highest levels in the country, including supreme runner up at the Pride in Print Awards for a fully cased Christchurch earthquake book in 2017. McHargs is bound by tradition but equipped for the future. Visit www.mchargs.co.nz.

Long established as a top-flight professional real estate agent in Christchurch, Cindy-Lee Sinclair of Harcourts Holmwood Real Estate Merivale says there are several things to know when putting property on the market. An absolutely key element is to ensure an agent has a signed listing authority before they bring buyers through, Cindy says.

Y

our agent should provide you with a written market appraisal to help you set your expectations about price range for the property. The agent should also discuss with you all the different ways you can sell the property and help you settle on the method that best suits. The agent should also talk through the marketing options and help you choose a programme that meets your needs and the method of sale chosen. Cindy says you also need to understand how and when the agent will be paid, and how the commission on the completed sale will be

calculated. Other costs to consider include marketing and the auctioneers fee, if you choose to sell via auction. Cindy recommends everyone planning to sell their home read the ‘New Zealand Residential Property Agency Agreement Guide’ prepared by The Real Estate Agents Authority. It sets out in some detail the information you need and the decisions you will have to make and you can clarify any information in there with Cindy or your agent. MATT HENRY PHOTOGRAPHY + AMBIENT LIGHT

It’s such a privilege to meet you, I grew up with your music in the 1980s and Hello is such a beautiful song “You know what? I grew up with that music too! When I first started, people would say ‘what a sexy man’. When I got into my late 20s early 30s, people would say, ‘what a handsome man’. Now all I get is... ‘You look good for your age!’ “I was out in a bar in New Orleans and I saw this attractive woman looking across at me and I started looking at her, she looked at me and I was giving her ‘the look’ when she came over to me and said in this French accent ‘Yoouu are Lion-Nell Reechiiee?’ And I said ‘Yeeeesss, I am Lion-Nell Reechiiee’. “She then handed me her mobile and said, ‘I’m friends with your daughter Nicole, she wants to say hi’. That’s when I got an earful from my daughter about hitting on her friends. I’m OLD now!” How do you find the audiences respond to your music these days? “Nothing’s changed except for the fact when I started off everyone said that if I kissed a girl at the front of the stage, the audience would go nuts – so I started doing that. Obviously now it’s a lot harder to lean that far down, so I don’t do that anymore. I’m OLD. I’m really looking forward to the Christchurch audience. You’re going to have a fun time tomorrow night.” And he was so, so right. Those fortunate enough to be at Horncastle Arena were subjected to hit after boogiedown hit. The energy that this 68-year-old can conjure up on stage would make any teenage musician envious. Reminding us just how prolific and how relevant he was during the decade of music that was the 80s, back when he had us all singing We are the World, which he co-wrote with Michael Jackson. Music royalty was visiting Christchurch. “As always, Lionel put on an amazing show, we love hosting him at Horncastle Arena,” Turlough Carolan from Vbase says. “It’s also great to see such a varied range of events visiting the city over the coming months, from the incredible Dynamo (20-21 July) to the sublime Queens of the Stone Age (25 August), yet again, Vbase will be bringing many more great acts to Christchurch.” Marvellous to have caught up with a living legend here, such a down to earth man with a beautiful voice for singing and conversation. A moment all those who saw him in concert will remember for a long time. He had us all, Dancing on the Ceiling.

Forging Path his own

It can be a hard road growing up in the shadow of a big name, but Aaron Pero has stepped up to the commercial party and forged a career path all of his own. Metropol talks to the real estate whizz about his new career. Can you tell us a bit about your foray into real estate and what attracted you to this career path? When I was 14 I developed a website for a New York Times bestselling property author and since then I’ve continued working with investors, developers and real estate agents with marketing and technology. I was the Marketing & IT Manager at my father’s real estate company for two and a half years before going back on my own 14 May 24, 2018 Metropol

to work with developers and agents in real estate marketing. It was a natural progression. You grew up with a very high profile father, what influence did this have on your career path? I spent most of my childhood in Wellington with my mum but there was no escaping the Mike Pero Mortgages jingle which kids would recite at school on a daily basis, so

I guess I was always destined to be connected to property! I would fly down to Christchurch during school holidays and spent time in my father’s office. When I was 19 I moved back down to Christchurch and started working for a property investor as an unpaid intern, then went on to work in my father’s aviation technology business. I’ve been lucky to have had those opportunities which all shaped my career.

Aaron and Sophie Pero

You’re a bit of an entrepreneur. Can you tell us about some of your other ventures? On Valentine’s Day 2011 I started an online divorce business with a friend of mine to help people finalise their separations and move on. The Christian group Family First criticised us for being destructive and the publicity they gave us got us on TV3 news, Seven Days, radio and in most newspapers around the country. We received 150,000 hits on our website in a day.

More recently I created software for real estate agents called AgentSend. It helps agents deliver property documents to potential buyers and track their interest while also keeping the property at the top of the buyer’s mind by showing them ads across a network of more than two million websites. The software is used by agents from all brands around New Zealand, including myself! What do you love about Christchurch? I love that it’s both a major city and small town at the same time. There are plenty of opportunities and things happening, but people are still friendly and there’s a real sense of community. I think it’s an exciting place to live, we are lucky to have local developers and businesses willing to invest in our city and make it the wonderful town that it is. What are some of your favourite city haunts or things to do in the weekends? I’m a big fan of Victoria Street: Louis, Sister Kong and Dirty Land. I’m also really enjoying The Terrace - it’s great to be back dining there again and it’s come back better than ever. I look forward to Saturday mornings when my wife and I grab Posh Porridge at the Riccarton House Farmer’s Market before taking our dog Ruby to Halswell Quarry.

How difficult was the decision to go with a completely different company? It was easy. I respect what my father has been able to build in real estate but wanted to take my own path and build a business of my own, which he understands. Good friends of mine, Sarah and Hamish Mcleod, bought the Halswell Harcourts office last year and a conversation in February resulted in me completing my real estate papers, obtaining my licence and getting a desk at the office the following month. They are incredibly supportive and have a wealth of knowledge and experience. I couldn’t ask for better managers. Being backed by the Grenadier franchise means I have a lot of resources at my disposal and the Harcourts brand is an amazing asset.

Dr Sue Bagshaw CHAMPION OF CITY’S YOUTH By Melinda Collins

I

The physical scars of the Canterbury quakes are almost fully healed. But below the surface, the mental scars remain.

n line with international research showing the long term mental health effects of natural disasters, demand for mental health, addiction and domestic violence services has skyrocketed in Canterbury post-quake. As demand for child and youth mental health services soars, it can take months for specialist treatment for some of the most severe mental health problems. From her first ever job in student health at the university, to her involvement with Family Planning and the Methadone Programme, Dr Sue Bagshaw has been heavily invested in

16 May 24, 2018 Metropol

improving youth outcomes. “In those roles we came across a lot of young people that were in boxes,” she says. “So we asked young people what they wanted and that was the birth of the Youth One Stop Shop.” Designed to increase accessibility for youth, the One Stop Shop concept brought together medical, physical, sexual, mental and even social health services under one roof, with Christchurch’s 198 Youth Health Centre one of the first of its kind. “Individually we can only provide so much with a small budget,” Dr Bagshaw says. “We thought why not work together with other organisations. By bringing them all together we can be a lot more efficient and more effective.” After providing free health services to young people for 15 years, lack of funding forced its closure in 2010. But Dr Bagshaw was determined to bring these integral services back to the city and, in 2012, she and Peter Young from Action Works brought 16 youth organisations together to form the first youth hub in Barbadoes Street. Despite unprecedented need for these collective services over the past three years, the individual need for bigger, better spaces has

seen the organisations disperse and Dr Bagshaw has been on a tireless crusade since 2015 to develop a purpose-built hub to bring them all back together. The Anglican Church’s social service agency has stepped in to help, purchasing the old Salisbury Street bowling club site last year for $4 million. Now Dr Bagshaw is focused on raising the $10 million to make it happen. Co-designed by youth, for youth, the most important feature will be transitional accommodation for young people to stay for 3-18 months while they find work. “While they’re there, they will have access to all the services around them they need for support,” Dr Bagshaw says.

“This is about cooperation, not competition.” Youth workers will be in residence overnight, there will be a drop in centre, spaces to provide activities such as art, music and acting, outdoor ball courts and on site services including legal aid. Importantly, a social enterprise hub will support young people with good ideas but lack of opportunity, to become social entrepreneurs. “We’re living in a generation that is all about ‘me’. It’s become more about competition and less about community. We’ve all had enough of that. The poverty gap has got bigger. We know we need a new story,” Dr Bagshaw says. “This is about doing things together. People working in silo doesn’t help our young people. This is about cooperation, not competition.”

How fulfilling is it to be able to give back to an organisation which has given so much to your own family? It definitely is a special place. The fact my family have stayed there and used Ronald McDonald House makes the event even more special for me. It’s lovely to be able to give back to a place that gives so much each and every day. How much time goes into planning and preparation for an event such as this? We have started working on next year’s show already, so a lot of thought and preparation goes into it. It definitely becomes easier each year as we build our sponsors and supporters. Generally once someone has come along to the event, they want to give back in some way the following year, whether through sponsorship, donating auction/raffle items, modelling, volunteering or just spreading the word about ticket sales. As I am a full time primary school principal, it is something I do in my spare time. Generally I use the January school holidays to get a lot of it organised, plus I always have my school involved. It’s a great way for the children to learn how to give back and pay it forward.

Maree Lucas brought tears to the eyes of some of the biggest fashion followers last month at one of the city’s most covetable fashion shows of the year. Supporting a cause very close to her heart, the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) Fashion Show is her annual contribution to a charitable cause which has done so much for her own family.

B

orn prematurely, one with a hole in her heart, Maree’s twin nieces spent time at Starship, with the family staying

at RMH during their treatment. Metropol talks to the school principal and owner of M Factor Events about this very worthy cause.

How successful was this year’s event compared to previous years? I was really happy with this year’s event. There was such a positive and energetic vibe in the audience; the models looked great and have so much fun on the catwalk showcasing the gorgeous clothes and the most important thing to me is to raise awareness of this amazing charity. On top of that, we managed to raise over $60,000 for RMH.

Metropol May 24, 2018 17

A fashionable crusade

How did you become involved with RMH? A friend was organising a fashion show for Ronald McDonald House about 14 years ago and I was modelling in it. I gave her a hand on the day with the organising and met the team from RMH and realised what a special charity it was. I was already organising events, so this then became one of my annual events and we used it to raise money for RMH. It is such a fun event and relates well with the RMH charity as there are so many children involved and it’s about gorgeous fashion, but also has different aspects to a normal fashion show – the All Blacks/Crusaders always add some character and the amount of children involved makes it a really lively event.

LAVERICKS BAY

Distinctive Slumbers

By Melinda Collins

If the regional rebuild has demonstrated anything, it’s the innovation and determination of its habitants, as out of the box concepts, creations and contraptions come to life.

I

t’s certainly evident in the range of unique accommodations in greater Canterbury. From luxury tree houses to glass pods and grain silos, this is what sweet dreams are truly made of.

1.

Luxury treehouses: Hapuku Lodge + Tree Houses is a contemporary country hotel located on a deer breeding farm, 12 kilometres north of Kaikoura. Where else could you stay in a luxury tree hut 30feet above the ground in the canopy of a native manuka grove?

2.

Jail bird: Go to jail and do not pass go, just for the night with The Jailhouse. The award-winning Addington accommodation once served as an actual prison, before being refurbished and opened as accommodation more than a decade ago.

3. 4.

Stay in silo style: It may have once been just a humble grain silo, but some clever creators have converted this Little River marvel into innovative and stylish serviced apartments known as SiloStay. Pod perfection: Sleep in a glass pod surrounded by nature in Kaikoura, Banks Peninsula or Waipara with PurePods. These glass eco-cabins are located in the midst of the stunning New Zealand landscape.

20 May 24, 2018 Metropol

5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Timber tents: Spend the evening staring at the stars from a ‘wooden tent’ with see-through roofing at Onuku Farm Hostel that is located in a tranquil clearing amidst Kanuka trees in Banks Peninsula. Glorious glamping: Try your hand at glamping – that’s glamourous camping – with Canopy Camping Escapes at Lavericks Bay in Banks Peninsula. Rich in history, the scenic bay is set on a 1000-hectare sheep and beef farm and its luxury tents feature woodburners, a camp kitchen and even a bathroom Harmonious huts: Stay in a snug little domeshaped pod in Mt Lyford with Harakeke Huts. The five-hectare private property is set at the bottom end of Mt Lyford village. You have the comfort of proper lighting and heating and each hut has its own private deck and deck chairs. Star light, star bright: Stare at the amazing Mackenzie skies from SkyScape’s building made almost entirely of glass. This distinctive accommodation is designed to maximise the extraordinary views of the Mackenzie Country both day and night. Downton dalliance: Why not head back in time to Downton Abbey. Otahuna Lodge is a beguiling Victorian mansion that offers its guests a unique sense of wonder and discovery. New Zealand’s largest private historic residence has been revitalised with luxury accommodation.

hile Metropol has made the conscious decision to not plastic wrap our fortnightly glossy magazine, we’re excited to see some of the country’s largest retailers adopt a less is more approach when it comes to plastic. Earlier this month Countdown announced 10 of its supermarkets would go plastic bag free, with the remaining 172 to follow by the end of the year. Soon after Mitre 10 followed commercial suit, announcing its 128 stores, including Mitre 10 Mega and Hammer Hardware, will be plastic bag free from 1 July, a ban which includes bags at the checkout and boot liners. From this date, customers can either bring in their own bags, or other means to

transport their shopping home, or can choose to purchase a reusable bag in store for $1. Recycled paper sheets will be available in Mitre 10 and Mitre 10 MEGA stores for customers requiring something to keep their vehicles free from dirt and debris when transporting garden goods. Mitre 10 General Manager Marketing, Jules Lloyd-Jones, says the decision to remove bags and boot liners was an easy one to make and had unanimous support from the co-operative’s owner-operators. “As the country’s biggest home improvement retailer, we take our duty to be socially responsible seriously and always strive to do the right thing by our customers, communities and the environment.” We’re sure it won’t take long before consumer expectation sees others follow commercial suit.

INSTINCT By Melinda Collins

They say a leopard never changes its spots and, while that may be true, its sartorial inspiration sure does, in the most stylish of ways of course.

B

ecause, although the leopard print has been lauded for its luxe appeal for the longest of times, it is regularly given a new seasonal spin at the hands of some of the most popular purveyors of what’s hot and what’s not. And what better opportunity to indulge your animal instinct with an aesthetic that lends itself so well to autumn. Tom Ford, Victoria Beckham, Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors and Calvin Klein have all gone wild this sartorial season, transposing leopard into the urban jungle. Hear us roar!

Going Nude By Melinda Collins

It seems bare is the new beautiful because, although it would be rather irresponsible of us to suggest you take this in a literal sense, everyone is going nude right now. Whether you’re filling the bathroom cabinet or the wardrobe, going nude is all about a less is more approach.

ike the skin tones it is designed to mimic, nude comes in every colour, from soft ivories to deep browns and, whether you’re shopping for makeup or clothing, not every nude may be right for you. When it comes to sartorial selections, ensure there’s some contrast between your nude clothing and your nude skin so it doesn’t look like you are taking the concept literally. When it comes to makeup, mix it up with a light caramel colour, a pale pink, or for darker skin tones, a rich golden brown. All one tone and you risk looking washed out. The real beauty of the nude look is that you can pair it with almost any outfit, whether it’s a slinky red cocktail dress or a dark wash skinny jean. Its pared back aesthetic allows a bold outfit to do the talking.

Striking Every industry has one; the prodigious talents whose comfort zones are outside of the box and for whom rules are more guideline than instruction. They’re the rebels, the misfits, the rulebreakers and the nonconformists. But equally, they’re the trendsetters, the innovators, the visionaries and the true talent. For New Zealand fashion, that’s Karen Walker.

I

n 1989, at 19 years of age with just $100 in her pocket and two shirts in her commercial repertoire, she launched the Karen Walker label. Since then, she has steadily grown to be New Zealand’s most famous fashion export, with more than 1020 stores globally stocking her fashion, eyewear, jewellery, fragrance and paint collections, and a cult following from Lady Gaga to Madonna.

Offbeat designs distinguishable by their punchy, tomboyish edge With the ability to pair neons with pastels and floral prints with military touches in a way that only a true talent can, she has struck sartorial gold with her androgynous and offbeat designs distinguishable by their punchy, tomboyish edge. Metropol caught up with the sartorial powerhouse after a whirlwind trip to Dunedin where she was judging this year’s iD Fashion Week.

26 May 24, 2018 Metropol

What was a standout at this year’s iD Fashion Week? The stand-out for me, obviously, was our first prize winner, Damir Begović, but there were a lot of other collections that I thought were really excellent – I was very impressed and delighted to be there. How important is it to you to support emerging designers coming through the industry? I think it’s very important for anyone who’s well established in this industry to support emerging talent and iD Fashion Week’s got a great structure in place for doing this in a unique and outwardfacing way. Karen Walker has become an iconic Kiwi label, why do you think it has been such a success and how do you continue to stay ahead of the game in such a constantly evolving industry? It all comes down to the ideas and we’re very fortunate that people like what we make. With regard to staying ahead of the game, I guess that’s just a result of us being interested in new ideas.

What drew you to fashion in the first place? The feeling it gives you when you create or find something truly new/exciting/great.

How would you define the Karen Walker brand? Chic meets eccentric. You’ve been involved with some pretty cool collaborations recently, including cookie mix and cute canine accessories. How much fun has it been to do something completely different? We’re in this business because we love to work with and create new ideas, especially ones that put a smile on people’s faces, and we’re always thinking about and working on projects that are new and exciting. We have to ask the cliché question – what are your biggest style secrets? A combination of lots of things really but the things that are important to me include: quality, a sense of self and a calmness within that, plenty of sleep and, for me personally, if in doubt… navy. And never, ever, ever counterfeits. What can we look forward to from Karen Walker this coming year? Coming up in the second half of the year we’ve got new eyewear (guys and girls), new ready-to-wear and bags and a big, exciting, top secret collab to top the year off.

Tickled Pink

With cooler temperatures welcoming a cooler colour palette, one hot new trend is breaking all the season’s sartorial rules. With both street cred and practical appeal, pink is the colour the fashion world is falling for in 2018. By Melinda Collins

F

rom caps to coats, there’s something for everyone in this pretty palette, but not as you’ve ever seen it before. Yes, the dusky shade of postmodern girlhood has emerged with an intriguing new edge. The 2018 season is putting its own

sartorial spin on this bubble-gum classic – gone is the girly-girl look. Not so much in the pieces themselves, but rather how they’re put together. Teamed with masculine cuts and dirty shades of olive and brown, pink is quickly taking over as fashion’s new power player.

ACTION IN THE

City’s heart Many Cantabrians have said that central cities come to life with essential services placed in top locations. That’s now happening. One great example is the new Unichem Cashel Pharmacy, right opposite Ballantynes.

T

his year the retail heart of Christchurch is back to teeming with life. Cashel Mall, BNZ Square, and The Crossing have everything city dwellers want or need during lunch breaks. Plus, a visit to the Unichem Cashel Pharmacy holds more time-saving value than ever before. It now offers medical aesthetic services, so people can boost their wellbeing on the fly. Not only for collecting your prescriptions, the pharmacy – which also boasts a Post Shop – offers booked appointments with a registered nurse. Flu jabs are administered here, as are initial complementary skin consultations. These then can lead onto service-oriented appearance medicine, such as dermal fillers, collagen-inducing needling, or simply a

spot of nutritional counselling. This is a no-nonsense, caring place where health, nutrition, beauty and cosmetic medicine align within a highly medically-regulated pharmacy setting. All consultations and treatments happen in confidential, private surroundings, with intensively trained, experienced registered nurses. Pharmacist owner Annabel Turley has introduced this service three days a week – Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Cosmetic medicine treatments such as botox and dysport injections are administered in a private room and clients’ initial consultation includes a full assessment of a client’s skin requirements, and his or her overall lifestyle and health. hankfully, there’s plenty of eye – or more specifically ear – candy to tempt a loosening of the purse strings, with statement earrings doing the sartorial seducing this season. They don’t have to be full of colour to meet

the ‘bold’ brief. From ‘chandelier’ to ‘door knocker’, playing with angles, or just trying something completely out of left field, the statement earring is a game changer for any look but, let’s face it, it’s not like we need an excuse to have a fling with some new bling.

his attention to detail extends to far more than the physical face of the business, with a talented team at the top of its professional game. “Our team is highly trained and extremely motivated, with strong creativity and a deep love for what we do,” Senior Stylist and Director Michelle Farmer says. It certainly explains the loyal clientele the growing team continues to accumulate. Laura has recently joined the salon and specialises in cutting and flawless balayage. With more than 15 years’ experience, she fits right in at the dynamic salon where you are always greeted with a smile, a choice of beverage and the latest glossy magazine. Kudos has recently started using System Professional products, a range based on the recognition that everyone’s hair is as unique as their fingerprint. “All our treatments are 100 percent customised and the results are fantastic,” Michelle explains. A total curl range delivering up to 48 hours of defined, moisture locked curls, the new Sebastian Professional Twisted range is another popular addition while, for those after a sleek, straight look, a Keratin Express blow out can last for up to six weeks. The salon also stocks Quay Australia sunglasses, a cutting-edge brand Kylie Jenner has collaborated with.

Keeping up with current trends is all part of the fun and fuels the team’s creativity. So, while you may leave with a new look or some new shades, either way, you’ll leave looking fantastic.

In a different life, Alistair Burbury might have become a doctor. As the oldest male of his generation in his family however, he fell into a life of farming in North Canterbury after agricultural training at Lincoln. Now, at an age when some are retired, and after stints in real estate and working as a reflexologist in Australia, he’s in Christchurch, busy as the latter.

L

iving and working at the Surfer’s Paradise Crowne Plaza Day Spa as a reflexologist some years ago, Alistair was treating an international clientele. Management were loath to lose him, but Alistair returned to Christchurch to be near family. Needless to say, timing wasn’t ideal for reflexology after the quakes. Now however, it’s all about the help, happiness and stress release he can endow. Alistair’s very busy; he’s now even training other practitioners. ‘Reflexology’ is a practice of applying pressure to feet and hands in certain skilled ways. The results include deep, rejuvenating relaxation, improved sleep, increased energy and optimising clients’ lymphatic systems, boosting health and freedom from pain. Alistair spends much of his working week assisting friends’ businesses. However, during evenings he takes his reflexology gear on the road to clients’ houses. He often treats couples, one after the other, starting with a foot-spa. For this, he’ll go as far afield as Rangiora and Tai Tapu. “Travelling to treat clients just makes sense, because then for them there’s no driving anywhere afterwards. Instead, they can immediately fall into a beautiful sleep.”

What impact does diet have? Diet plays an important role in gastric reflux and some patients can manage symptoms by steering clear of certain foods. A number of common foods and drinks which can exacerbate reflux include coffee, wine, chocolate and fatty foods – all the enjoyable stuff. But onions, garlic and tomato can also exacerbate symptoms, so it’s not just the bad foods.

4.

What role does surgery play? Surgery is a very effective and safe means of permanent control of acid reflux. It can be undertaken using a laparoscopic (keyhole) technique and most people will recover normal activity within two weeks. Though it is a minimally invasive surgery, laparoscopy is most suitable for younger, fitter patients who have ongoing symptoms despite appropriate medication. Surgery can have side effects, so the decision to undergo surgery requires consultation with a specialist and the family doctor. Some conditions can exacerbate acid reflux, such as pregnancy and obesity, as these raise the pressure in the abdomen. For most women who suffer from pregnancy related symptoms (heartburn), this will resolve spontaneously after delivery.

5.

How is acid reflux diagnosed? Gastroscopy is the most accurate way to confirm acid reflux and this involves passing a video camera down the throat into the stomach to examine the upper digestive tract The best person to advise you about this is your family doctor and he or she can then refer the patient for a gastroscopy if required.

Eating and drinking are some of the most basic human needs and yet, for many people who suffer from chronic and repeated gastric reflux, the freedom to eat and drink what they choose may not be a given.

M

etropol talks to endoscopy specialist, Surgeon Ross Roberts from The Endoscopy Clinic about gastric reflux and what treatment options are available.

1.

What is gastric reflux? Put into simple terms, gastric reflux is the regurgitation of gastric contents into the oesophagus, which can create a burning pain in the lower chest area, often after eating. However, it’s important to recognise, gastric reflux is not just one symptom and is often a pattern of heartburn, choking and sometimes coughing. The symptoms of gastric reflux can come on at a young age, even in babies, and may not be easily recognised in younger patients.

health

2.

What treatments are available? Broadly classified as medical treatment or surgery, the aim of medical intervention is to reduce the acidity of the fluid that regurgitates and causes the inflammation of the oesophagus. For people with mild symptoms, simple measures like over-the-counter medications such as antacids often suffice, by treating and preventing symptoms. However, more severe cases, particularly if the patient is unresponsive to lifestyle changes, often requires the use of Losec (Omeprazole) and similar treatments, which slow or prevent the production of acid within the stomach. While these treatments can be very effective, they may not necessarily control all regurgitation for all patients, so surgery may be a preferable option for some.

T

he firm enjoys a point of difference which the partners believe makes it unique among law firms in Christchurch. Rich in diverse cultures with staff from all corners of the globe, there are an astonishing ten languages spoken at the firm which, at least in part explains the firm’s by-line, ‘We speak your language’. The by-line is also something of a play on words and intended to portray the fact that the lawyers and support staff at Kannangara Thomson break down the often complicated language of the law and explain your legal issues to you in plain English (or Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean and Afrikaans to name just a few of the other languages spoken at the firm). As well as being culturally diverse, the firm provides a wide range of legal services to its divergent client base, with lawyers specialising in business sales and purchases, commercial property transactions, investment property, residential property sales and purchases, estates, asset protection and estate planning involving the use of family trusts, wills, company law, family law and much more beyond. The partners at Kannangara Thomson have a good grounding in the law having all served their time at much bigger law firms. Part of the ethos of the firm is that it does not wish to replicate the typical law office environment of those larger firms and,

with that in mind, staff and partners are not burdened with such mundane daily tasks as time recording in six minute units or fee budgets, as is the case at almost all larger law firms. Another factor which sets the firm apart from its larger counterparts is that once a fee range is quoted, it will very rarely be departed from, thereby giving clients certainty. The staff at Kannangara Thomson is respected and well looked after, with occasional unexpected gifts from the partners in recognition of stellar performance, frequent morning teas, flexibility of work hours and arrangements and almost fortnightly lunches provided by the partnership. As a result, the team at Kannangara Thomson is a settled and happy one, able to function at its absolute best to provide excellent legal results for clients. With ample off street parking available and a convenient location near the airport, the gateway to the south, the new western Belfast bypass and the motorway north, the Wairakei Road location has proven to be one which is very popular with the firm’s client base. The team at Kannangara Thomson look forward to being part of the Canterbury legal landscape for many decades to come and assisting you with your legal needs.

cuisine High Tea Temptations The new Executive Chef of The George, Antony Page, recently filled us in on the new 50 Bistro winter menu heading our way, when the discussion moved to a charity function that runs close to Metropol’s heart – the Pink Ribbon Breakfast, supporting the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.

T

he George is getting behind this very worthy cause by throwing a Pink Ribbon High Tea until 15 June. Now you’ll be able to have the opportunity to enjoy something as decadent and delicious as a high tea at The George, while supporting research into breast cancer, with the goal of getting zero deaths from the disease. You can start your High Tea with a Nautilus Rosé, or tea and coffee. Culinary options on offer include chicken, cranberry and brie sandwiches, carpaccio of beef and horseradish, and smoked salmon and herb cream cheese rolls. Or perhaps you’ll be tempted

by the sweet treats like raspberry macaroons, strawberry custard tart or cherry chocolate brownie. The choices on the menu are extensive yet, with one of Canterbury’s top chefs, Kelly Te Mete, behind the menu design, how could it possibly be anything but stunning? Why not get your BFFs together and make a date from mid-morning till late afternoon by calling The George to book your table? Any time is a good time for that convivial catch up with the ladies over high tea when you can join with the George in supporting the wonderful endeavour that is the Pink Ribbon Breakfast.

OUR NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF

What drew you to hospitality? I loved cooking from a young age and it has evolved from there. It’s a hit to share something I have created with customers and see them enjoy it. What are some of the key ingredients for a successful hospitality establishment? Consistency. Anyone who has ever worked with me will have heard the ‘consistency’ word over and over! Whether it’s fish and chips, fine dining, Asian or Spanish, it has to be consistent. Obviously good service and environment come into play too. Music level, lighting and temperature are also critical. On the flip side, sometimes customers don’t respond and I have no reason why. Some of the best businesses I have created have closed their doors.

CHIWAHWAH TONY ASTLE BRINGS THE

Christchurch hospitality kingpin Tony Astle already heads a culinary empire, but now he’s bringing the Chiwahwah to town. Metropol talks to him about raising the bar – both literally and figuratively.

The

RACECOURSE HOTEL

& Motorlodge

What are some of your favourite haunts or places to head out to in Christchurch? I don’t go too far from my own establishments. I’m a creature of habit so don’t necessarily follow the newest or trendiest venues. Foo San is my favourite, followed by Rangoon Ruby. My wife and I prefer to share a lot of smaller dishes. What do the next 12 months have in store for you? I will strive to keep the businesses I have consistent. There is a tempting night club opportunity at the moment… I’ve always said I will finish my time in the industry back in the kitchen cooking, whether that time is here, I’m not sure. What I do know is I want to spend more time with my family.

When does Chiwahwah open and can you describe the cuisine and vibe you’re creating? We have only recently received our building consent so sometime in the next few weeks, hopefully June. The cuisine will be Mexican. As always, we will endeavour to provide the best of its type in town. The vibe will be fun, with street cool interiors not straying to far from the Mexican I have created in the past with a few surprises. There will be a private area.

CHRISTY AND GIULIO STURLA PHOTO GUY FREDERICK

Taking Root

From an unassuming two-storey building on the main street of Lyttelton, a small restaurant is turning out some of the best food in the country.

H

eaded by Giulio and Christy Sturla, Roots opened in London St in 2012 and has been making culinary waves in the port-side town. Metropol talks to the couple behind this award-winning restaurant. What is your culinary philosophy? We look at nature as our main inspiration; the environment around us is our creative space. We are an ingredient based kitchen and we pride ourselves on using only the best that New Zealand produces. We have a sustainable approach to everything we do, from selecting the produce, to the way we cook and how we enjoy life with our family members.

44 May 24, 2018 Metropol

Can you tell us about your cuisine journey? The journey never ends, I started cooking at a young age at home while growing up in Ecuador, fresh natural foods were abundant and I really like to eat a lot. I started cooking professionally right after school. I have been cooking in many countries and different kinds of establishments, after a whole year interning at Mugaritz when I was 28 my style of cooking was defined. We opened Roots in November of 2012 and every single day is a journey that we enjoy. How important is Lyttelton to you? Lyttelton is the place that we could make our dreams come true. Lyttelton is the place where my daughters were born. Lyttelton is the community that opened their arms and gave us the support we needed to start our crazy dream. Lyttelton is home for us. What attracted you to the cuisine industry? At the beginning was the food, I love to eat. Now I look at cooking as an opportunity to express myself, to tell a story from my kitchen or the people we work with. I know that cooking good food has the power to make the world a better place for the future.

What are some of your favourite dishes or culinary creations? All of our creations are my favourite; they tell a story of time and place. We want to create a memory of taste for our guests that hopefully stays with them forever. You’ve earned some pretty impressive accolades now, why do you think it’s been such a success? We believe in what we do, we are passionate, we don’t give up. What are some of your favourite haunts or things to do in Canterbury? We love the Banks Peninsula in general, every corner of it is an attraction for us, we can forage, we can surf, we can enjoy the stars. Also the North Canterbury wine region is something that always surprises us and the potential to become an incredible wine region is inspiring. What does the next 12 months have in store for Roots? A whole new Roots is in the making… also a small farm behind the restaurant is hopefully coming to fruition by the end of winter, probably harvesting by summer 2019.

and with dietary options to suit everyone from paleo to vegan, expertly crafted and proudly served coffee, Castle Rock is well worth the visit. “I think what makes us stand out is that we all genuinely love food and what we do,” Head Chef and Manager Candice Davies says. “I couldn’t ask for a better team especially with our new General Manager Zach Askew on board, who has an exciting new vision which we are all really excited about sharing with our customers.” Castle Rock Café also caters for private functions, whether a morning tea shout, full lunch option or corporate canapes. The venue is also available for private hire. “We are a small team of very passionate individuals who want to provide a fun and relaxed atmosphere, amazing food, great coffee and exceptional service. The place to be for those after the definitive Thai dining experience

Best Kept Oriental Secret Hoon Hay Thai is one of the city’s best kept oriental secrets. Tucked away amongst the bustling shops of Coppell Place, it is the place to be for those after the definitive Thai dining experience.

Winter Tipples We recently caught up with Andy Deuchars from Wigram Brewery to discuss some of the company’s fine beers.

The red wine of beers that takes your palate on a journey with its mixture of fine components to keep you amused. That end of the night beer, that meal in a bottle. Can’t you just imagine sitting by a warm fire with some hearty food and a trusty 500ml bottle? Speaking of food, these dark ales go stunningly in dishes such as a hearty venison stew. The staff also create their own entrees which include spring rolls, curry puffs and Thai fish cakes. Hoon Hay Thai is fully licenced, with a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages on offer and BYO is also catered for. Clever I Coffee Creators

One of the things you discover about Black and White Coffee Cartel when you drop in for a coffee is the company’s passion for satisfied customers – whether it’s the exquisite coffee, the ambient environment or the staff who serve you.

t’s a culture consciously created to ensure every customer’s experience is one that makes them want to return. Combine that with the company’s innovative microroasting, done in small batches on site, and the freedom to allow each café the space to express individuality and you have a winning combination, resulting in an atmosphere that not only makes you want to return, but also a team of people who want to work there. It’s only taken 300 years of humanity consuming coffee to get there! As Bink Bowler from Black and White says, “Coffee is a relationship made for you. We take

pride in all the coffee we make for our guests.” That’s really the pervasive feeling you get at Black and White; gone are the 1990s snobbery coffee house. Here is the vibrant culture of people meeting people to share a rich atmosphere that has culture and coffee made for your taste. It’s a little bohemian; a little edgy; a little bit you. With the forward-thinking team at Black and White Coffee Cartel, it’s nice to think there’s someone in the industry who has finally got that essence right. The most important thing to think about a great cup of coffee is, who’s drinking it?

southern lakes THE REMARKABLES TERRAIN PARK

Winter thrills & spills By Keiran Bleach

Four Southern Lakes ski areas will open soon, heralding a winter of thrills and spills on the slopes. Here’s a taste of what skiers and boarders can expect… after all, it’s all downhill from here.

1.

The Remarkables is extending its learner terrain by a massive 70 percent this season, as well as installing a new conveyor to access the area. Ski Area Manager Ross Lawrence believes this will significantly improve the experience for novice riders. “The learner experience is about progression, so providing another step will get guests feeling even more comfortable and capable as they gradually move up the mountain.” Remarkables Snow Sports Academy will also continue. The freeski and snowboard development programmes offer season-long and school holiday courses for children aged 6-18. For those who love jumps and bumps, there are extensive freestyle features across three dedicated terrain parks. The Remarkables is a 40-minute drive from Queenstown and three-quarters of the road is now sealed. Opens 9 June, closes 7 October* www.theremarkables.co.nz

2.

Coronet Peak offers the longest skiing hours in the Southern Lakes. Mornings start with First Tracks, when earlybirds can watch the sun rise as they glide down freshly-groomed trails against the backdrop of panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu. As twilight arrives, families and friends can catch up over a pizza or burger, watch the sun go down and take to the slopes under lights. “People love night skiing – it’s a magical and fun experience,” Ski Area Manager Nigel Kerr says. “And it’s extremely convenient at just 20 minutes from downtown Queenstown.” This winter, night skiing runs three times a week, with Wednesday added to Friday and Saturday nights. “We have key events teed up for our guests to enjoy, bringing some well-known and loved DJs and bands to Coronet.” Opens 16 June, closes 30 September* www.coronetpeak.co.nz

*All dates subject to weather and snow conditions. 58 May 24, 2018 Metropol

3.

Treble Cone is renowned for its unmatched terrain and leg-burning vertical, new General Manager Toby Arnott says. “To complement this, visitors can expect a fresh approach to the Treble Cone experience; wide open, uncrowded terrain, and short lift queues,” he says. It has a northwest-facing learners’ and beginners’ area, so it’s bathed in sunshine and warmth all season. For hard-core types wanting advanced terrain, Saddle Basin and Summit Slopes offer plenty of challenges with open powder faces, natural halfpipes and fun drops. New for 2018 is a Snow Shoe Experience, which includes a scenic chair ride to the top of the ski area; snowshoe and equipment rental, and a fully-guided walk with a qualified instructor. Opens 28 June, closes 23 September* www.treblecone.com

4.

Cardrona Alpine Resort is handily situated between Wanaka and Queenstown. It has three wide, open basins featuring some of New Zealand’s most progressive terrain and promises that every family member will find a favourite trail. It also boasts New Zealand’s only gondola cabin-style lift on a ski area, McDougall’s Express Chondola. Spokesperson Jen Houltham predicts “another epic season” this year. “Highlights of the 2018 winter up at Cardrona will be the Real Journeys Queenstown Winter Festival; the Audi quattro Winter Games NZ, and the Jossi Wells Invitational,” she says. Opens 16 June, closes 14 October* www.cardrona.com

We’ve gathered together some brilliant Kiwi artists to celebrate with us in true Queenstown Winter Festival style,” Rae says. Among the stellar line up are well known names Tiki Taane, Maala, Leisure, The Black Seeds and The Feelers, who are celebrating their 25th anniversary tour. When the sun sets crowds will head to one of the traditionally sold out comedy events or the SKYCITY Vive le Cirque Ball which will be in a secret location this year. “Festival has always been about letting your inhibitions run a bit wild and embracing the true essence of Queenstown.

Traditionally for Festival this has meant anything from throwing you and your canine buddy down a mountain side to running about in your undies in freezing temperatures, we continue these traditions in 2018 and add a few surprises along the way.” For full programme details visit www.winterfestival.co.nz.

TOWNHOUSES TO TEMPT A new development of eight exceptional townhouses is well underway in Queenstown. Located in Arthurs Point, Coronet Grove is nestled in a quiet, relaxed village occupied by nature lovers and peace-and-quiet keepers.

THIS PROVIDES VERY ATTRACTIVE INVESTMENT RETURNS FOR PURCHASERS.”

C

oronet Peak is a 15-minute drive away, the Shotover Jet is just around the corner and there are plenty of walking and biking trails, making Coronet Grove perfect for adventure lovers. Contracted to build the first stage of Coronet Grove, Brownie Construction is an accomplished and respected building company, which covers Central Otago and Canterbury. A high standard of workmanship and professionalism has seen Blueview Developments also engage the construction firm for stage 2, which is expected to begin in June. James Brownie, the Managing Director of Brownie Construction, is delighted to be a part of this development with his

professional and dedicated staff delivering a high-quality block of units. “We are devoted with our many projects currently in progress in Queenstown and determined to maintain our high standard of workmanship,” James Brownie says. Built in three stages, these premium spec, two-storey homes are 170sqm each and feature three bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open plan living and dining area which flows easily outdoors. Thoughtfully planned by Blueview Developments Ltd, Project Manager James Flett says the carefully considered design will appeal to buyers. “The Coronet Grove zoning includes Visitor Accommodation, allowing the homes to be owner occupied, or rented out as short-stay accommodation,” he says. “This provides very attractive investment returns for purchasers looking to enter or expand in the Queenstown market.” As the complex is private and tranquil, it offers a welcome escape from city life. “These homes have been specifically designed for skiers looking to enjoy Coronet Peak during the day, dine in Queenstown through the evening before relaxing in the quietness that Arthurs Point provides,” James Flett says. Three homes in the development remain available to purchase, for more information you can contact Warwick and Megan Osborne at Harcourts 03-441 0779, osbornes@harcourts.co.nz.

The newest addition to the Eichardt’s building family has been shortlisted for a prestigious architecture award.

ichardt’s II was designed by Michael Wyatt of Wyatt+Gray Architects to have a simpatico relationship with its neighbour, Eichardt’s Private Hotel, with

a seamless connection at the upper and lower levels. Along Marine Parade, the historic 1860’s facade of the Eichardt’s Private Hotel is

flat, square ended and rectangular in profile, with plastered schist stone, with the new building mirroring its profile, with Oamaru stone masonry. The set of two neatly square off the mall to Church Street block; one with a neoclassical texture, the other more contemporary. “Earlier versions of the design were encouraged to mimic the original,” Michael says. “This is an important addition to Queenstown’s townscape and the design demonstrates that with sensitivity old and new can be happy bedfellows.” Amalgamated Builders Limited was the builder of the Eichardt’s II project. “ABL was very pleased to have won the base build contract on this prestigious project and then go on to negotiate the fitouts of the shops, restaurants, commercial spaces and hotel rooms,” ABL Managing Director Richard Johnson says. “The site which was on the waterfront and had buildings occupying 100 percent of the site area made building very difficult, creating many logistical issues which needed to be overcome. This was successfully completed with team work from our suppliers, subcontractors and the consultant team. All in all a project for all to be proud of.” Eichardt’s II has been shortlisted for a New Zealand Institute of Architects award, Southern Branch, in Dunedin on 8 June.

A house designed to blend into the landscape and withstand the Central Otago elements is up for an architecture award.

C

lyde House, by Wyatt+Gray Architects, has been short-listed in the housing category at the New Zealand Institute of Architects Southern Branch Awards. Designed by Michael Wyatt, Clyde House was shaped by sun, view and wind. Wyatt knew the wind roared down the valley from Cromwell so created a balance between shelter and sun.

“The landscape has influenced the shape of the house. It has a goal post footprint, the crossbar being a glazed link between the two wings that provides downstream shelter from wind on each side,” Michael says. The rural lifestyle block is one of the best on the subdivision as the river is on the eastern side of the house which helps with keeping the property private.

“It was built on a featureless, baron flat site, with hardly a stick to be seen, but it has established growth now and the plots are big enough that you can plant your own privacy,” he says. The colour of the four-year-old house has “weathered nicely”. Wyatt says it’s a stained cedar to fit nicely into the Central Otago landscape. “The surrounding hills are long, low and brown and this house is low, long and brown. I’m happy with how the colour has matured,” he says. Alexandra-based Breen Homes was the builder on this project and Managing Director Lindsay Breen says, “Having worked with Michael before on projects more centred around the Queenstown area, we were more than happy to be asked to price this project a little closer to home. It’s always a pleasure to work with Michael and his team. We also love his designs which are well balanced between style, innovation and buildability.” The Southern Branch NZIA awards are on 8 June in Dunedin.

ARCHITECTURAL HEADS By Cheryl Colley

“Queenstown is a wonderful place to be involved in the construction industry,” says Ben Collins, owner of Bayshore Builders which he set up in 2001. “There is so much variety of work, from residential builds to commercial construction and internal fitouts, as well as civil projects.”

I

ndeed, Bayshore Builders is skilled in all these aspects of construction, but Ben says the company’s deep passion is architecturally-designed homes. “We pride ourselves on working closely with architects from all over the country who have clients wanting to build in Queenstown. Of the last 11 houses we built here, three were for local residents, but the remainder were holiday homes for people from out of town – even as far away as Sydney.”

What excites Ben and his team of experienced tradies is the quality and the detailed craftsmanship required to build high-end houses. “Clients building this calibre of home have high expectations. It’s our challenge to deliver the best of workmanship and finish and we are not satisfied with anything less. It’s also very important for us to have excellent relationships with the architect and client throughout the build time, which can be

anything from 12-18 months because of the size and complexity of the homes.” Ben says that it takes a special breed of builder to take on these projects. “Not everyone wants to do this kind of work. It can be hard after all because of the need for perfection and total dedication, but I learned about building big houses while on OE in Canada and that ignited an enthusiasm which has never faded.” Contact Ben on 021 345 256.

I

t is well known that the areas of a home from which heat escapes are around its windows and doors. Designing window and door frames to prevent heat escaping has reached the highest standard with the use of unplasticised polyvinyl chloride or UPVC. This material, when used in conjunction with low emissivity double glazing, achieves an R-value of .8 for insulating effectiveness and thermal performance. To interpret the jargon, that’s very high and will help you enjoy a perfectly comfortable atmosphere in your home, while also lowering power bills. It’s the ideal product for the southern environment. UPVC Windows and Doors Ltd of Dunedin manufactures and installs these UPVC products using the Deceuninck Zendow profile, the world’s largest manufacturer of UPVC window and door systems. The frames come in a range of seven colours and have a fifteen-year guarantee. Once installed on a house, the frames look very similar to the beauty of timber frames but, unlike timber, they are virtually maintenance free. There are other benefits too, with high security locking features, high sound insulation and maximum water tightness for areas prone to driving rain and snow. You can contact UPVC Windows and Door Ltd about UPVC frames on 0800 455 501.

The distinction’s in the detail, according to Ben Lewis, a highend Kiwi interior designer and General Manager of Trenzseater. With stores in Christchurch, Auckland and most recently Queenstown, Ben’s designs are picking up awards, accolades and mentions in international publications.

T

renzseater in Queenstown means Southern Lakes dwellers will have ready access to stylish, luxurious and supremely comfortable Kiwidesigned furniture, room and wholehouse schemes. Architecturally designed by Peter McMenamin from BuildBIM Architecture, the new Queenstown showroom on Frankton’s Hawthorne Drive is a one-stop-shop for ontrend New Zealand-made furniture, along with opulent, authentic lighting, hardware, soft furnishings, wallpaper and accessories. The design destination also showcases exclusive product from international designmanufacturers such as Artwood, Buster+Punch, Eichholtz and Jonathon Browning. A visit to the store in person and online will no doubt reinforce Ben’s vision of what’s happening with layering in design. He says a great design will have very-well-considered and sometimes subtle iterations of texture, pattern and colour. Often

materials used will be quite diverse, with large-scale objects such as lamps and decorative whimsy pieces providing the wow-factor. Ben believes interiors are becoming more eloquently curated spaces, with personality embedded in detailing such as glamorous studs or trims. The ability to elegantly assemble various highly resolved design elements and to produce fabulously feel-good relaxing, dining and sleeping spaces is what Trenzseater’s interiors experts do best. Ben himself has been named as one of just the world’s 20 leading designers in this year’s Luxe et al magazine. That’s no small feat. Visit www.trenzseater.com.

Hanging plants are just plain cool, so why not give macramé hanging planters a go?

2.

Pot plant stands enable you to stagger the heights of your potted perennials, adding drama and dimension to your spaces, while self-standing pots are great for softening stark corners.

3.

Herbs are great in the kitchen, so why not try a hanging herb garden; you never know, the easy access might inspire a little culinary creativity.

4.

Certain plants thrive in the moisture of the bathroom and they’re a great option to break up the stark white we so often find in this space.

Terrariums come in all shapes and sizes and make a great centrepiece for the dining table.

A NEW APPROACH A N

O L D

Architect Craig South explores an alternative to the norm when it comes to central city living.

rchitecture is typically viewed as a whole – the exterior lines, the internal layout and the fit-out. And while it is all of that, if we were to strip it back to a considered shell, we have what is known as Naked Architecture – a term being used overseas to describe buildings being designed and built with no preconceived ideas around their internal layout and use; buildings that the end-user is able to individually tailor to suit their needs. This is not to say that the cornerstones of architecture are ignored. The roles of the developer and the architect are still vital throughout the process. Each unit or apartment needs to be the result of

considered design; crafted for its individual location and placement within the overall structure in order for the building to be a success. The developer and architect are equally important during the fit-out stage, ensuring the end result is a well thought out, bespoke home. By offering buyers this ability to buy ‘shell space’ and fit it out to suit their personal needs, we are creating end-user buy-in in terms of what they are wanting, giving buyers the opportunity to stake a claim and invest, beyond financially, into their purchase. Where someone might spend more on floor tiles and fittings, another occupant will spend less. One may have an ‘entertainers’ kitchen and one large living area, while another will have multiple living spaces and sleeping options to suit their family – allowing everyone to create a home that falls within their budget while meeting their personal needs.

Having been seeking an inner city living option for my family, it has become apparent that finding the perfect solution is hard. Our decision to move into the inner city has been driven by the high level of amenity and the incredible opportunity Hagley Park offers as a borrowed landscape, ensuring that no matter where we move in this central neighbourhood and what size our floor plan, we have this vast green space on our doorstep. This ensures we won’t be compromising on the Kiwi backyard, rather opening up the opportunities that come with living within close proximity to such an under-utilised offering. Personally, we would jump at the chance to convert a ‘shell’ into spaces that reflect our family’s needs both now and into the

future. And what is exciting is that someone else could create something completely different in the adjacent space. This is a concept that allows for individualisation of style, budget and layout, creating a cross section and diversification of people living in our city. This type of development is not an unknown concept in New Zealand, or even Christchurch. We commonly adopt it in the design and build of commercial buildings, so the question is, why not do it for personal

living spaces? We tend to look to Europe for passive design learnings and other design concepts, so why not look to them for inspiration to encourage families into our inner city? With our central city neighbourhood bursting with amenities, yet slow to attract residential development post-earthquake, it is time to think beyond ordinary and offer a new and unique way to encourage people back. www.caarc.co.nz

structures (to code or higher), through to full construction, creating workplaces that are interesting and well-designed for staff, and can even find suitable tenants.

“In fit-out work particularly, we work closely with clients and designers to select the appropriate products and finishes, from the type of flooring, air conditioning systems, fire protection and internal wall linings, to the colour scheme, soft furnishings, equipment, furniture, lighting etc to create ambiance and a fantastic environment people really want to work in,” Director Steve Brownie says. “Our philosophy is to retain clients for life and much of our business is based on referrals. We are extremely proud of our client relationships.” The catch phrase ‘on time, on budget’ stands true; the company’s deadline track record is 100 percent. Costs up front ensures clients can lock in budgets and timeframes with no surprises, secure tenants or make plans to begin trading. “We free up clients’ time; they can feel in control without the stress. Our team has a wealth of knowledge and experience and a huge database of industry contacts,” Steve says. Dedicated project managers guide clients through the process with as much or as little input as they desire and the team’s results speak for themselves. the SIMPLE

CHOICE

Simply Heat is, quite simply, a mecca for heating design and installation options. At the company’s expansive showroom, unique in the South Island, you can see and try for yourself 41 gas fires, ultra-low emission and standard wood fires, multi fuel heaters, electric fires, water heaters, ducted heating, underfloor heating, heat pumps and solar panels.

T

he majority of homes will employ more than one form of heating and/or cooling and, the larger the home, the greater the number of sources. Steve Waring of Simply Heat says that integration of heating sources is key for the look, feel and efficiency you want. Simply working through options on paper with your architect might not give you the optimum result. Talking with the experts at Simply Heat and trying the units for yourself will help you make informed choices about the best systems and how they will integrate from the very beginning, rather than trying to retrofit when issues arise.

A chat with the Simply Heat team could see you replace a hot water cylinder with a gas heating unit outside the house, freeing up vital floor space inside for that pantry, work station, or sports equipment storage space you’ve been dreaming of. Heat seekers outside of Christchurch don’t miss out either – Simply Heat works all over the South Island. The company’s ability to design and install fabulous looking and efficient heating systems has seen it in hot demand throughout Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago, where it works with local trades on installation. It’s a simple choice – Simply Heat.

TAP TRENDS I N T O

Y O U R

O W N

When building or renovating, tapware choices should be exciting. Far from just a functional plumbing imperative, taps are rising in the design stakes. They’re top styling statements in themselves. And while there are always trends in tapware, homeowners should be true to their individual tastes.

E

dward Gibbon Retail Manager, Lesley Storm, believes if there’s a desired overall look or feel to a room, then taps, basins and sinks play a crucial part. Plumbing styles have the power to impact and personalise a design scheme. “We guide people through the process of honing in on exactly what it is they want and what will work for their home project,” Lesley says. “For instance, if a client wants a certain metallic finish to be adhered to, we can find a range which offers that shade and effect throughout all the accessories they’d want in bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and powder-rooms.” Such details may not be immediately obvious when starting out with the process of tap, basin or sink choice. Lesley adds that planning ahead is definitely a good idea. Some vanities or plumbing elements could take up to three weeks from ordering. She says customers often come in with floor or wall-tile samples, which is ideal practice applied to seemingly minute decisions about things like exact shade, gloss or matte surfaces on tapware. In the end, every attention to both function and aesthetic detail pays off of in greater pleasure for the long term. Every turn of the tap satisfies when function, shape, colour, material and finish are perfect for the room. Metallics are really popular right now, Lesley says, with black and chrome still popular perennial choices also.

Decoding Tap Talk: Taps are sometimes categorised as classic, contemporary, modern, modern-classic, and pictures tell much of the aesthetic story. The choice isn’t just between metallic colours, but black, white, glass, matte, shiny, satin finishes, even porcelain details. Then there are other considerations to ask about, like water usage/volume, size and placement of taps in relation to basins/bowls, plus the potential to fit filters.

Top Tap Tip: Choose heated towel rails when you choose your tap style if they’re to co-habit. Not all bathroom supply companies manufacture heated towel rails in all shades, but a shape or colour match may be possible. Also, consider the form of your taps alongside that of other accessories. Do they echo each other? Are they minimal and simple, or nostalgic and detailed?

Taps are top styling statements in themselves Metropol May 24, 2018 77

DESIGN CENTRE INSPIRES

Congratulations! You’ve decided to build a new home. The next step involves whittling down those Instagram and Pinterest image collections, and choosing the design features of your bricks and mortar, or weatherboard and stone, to make your home dreams come true.

Y

ou’ve actually got some 500600 decisions ahead of you – it could be daunting, but not when you know that Jennian Homes has developed the staggeringly simple but so sophisticated concept of Studio J Design Centre, located at 212 Main South Road. The stunning centre is designed to

replicate a house, setting up the decisionmaking process in a logical order that you literally walk through. You begin ‘outside’ the house where different cladding options are displayed, along with roofing, landscaping items, decking and even the garage door. Progress through the front door and a gorgeous full kitchen is installed, but that’s

just the beginning. Set up for you are all of the laminate, benchtop, tile and handle samples. You pull them out, lay them together, add and subtract, mix and match. It’s a fully interactive process enabling you to trial the visuals, sounds, and feel of your internal materials. You will also see some of Jennian’s suppliers’ newest products on display. Next are curtain and carpet samples to mix and match with your kitchen choices. Mouldings, architraves, switches and door handles follow, and even the different ways your insulation can be installed. The Fairview room displays joinery styles, while the Freedom Room showcases wallpapers. Door, wardrobe, shower, bath and vanity selections complete your experience. The team sees the design centre as a step up from the display home experience, because you have the range of options before you and it is interactive. But the company also recognises that you want to know about flow from room to room, and the indoor/outdoor dynamics. There are two beautiful display homes: one at 7 Lemonwood Drive at Farringdon in Lincoln, and the other at 9 Westpark Drive at Westpark in Rangiora, open Wednesday to Saturday 12pm-4pm. Working from Kaikoura to Rakaia, the team at Jennian is thrilled with the quality of its trades and suppliers: they have not been able to fault them. Every building journey is different, at Jennian yours can start with a trip to a display home or Studio J, a visit to the website or a chat with one of their friendly and knowledgeable sales team. The company offers a design and build service, choose from the existing ‘Ready Range’, or bring your own plans. Whether you’re are first-timer making clever decisions with your Kiwisaver nest egg, or looking forward to a high-end architectural home, the scope of Jennian Homes means the team can bring your vision to expectation to reality. aybe it’s the rise and rise of fabulouslooking faux furs. More likely it’s the gorgeous feel of velvety, furry, sheepskin-like furnishings and of flocked, patterned wallpaper. There’s logic in thinking that in the depths of the Southern Hemisphere, textures of the most opulent type are right at home. We want these fabulous items to recline on the ends of our beds, or tossed over armchairs. We like to be able to drop in total comfort to the floor-rug in front of a fire. We need the stuff around us to be sumptuously padded or silkily soft; not office-stark. It’s the glory of winter.

t’s an interesting thing to watch. Look at any fashion image which truly works on a model and it’s often because of sizes, lengths and exactly how they’re juxtaposed. Right now accessories are huge. Literally huge. Such as earrings which, when swinging, dust off your shoulders. They’re often supercolourful, maybe representing a slight challenge to the introverted. So it is with home design objects… light fittings, lamps, mirrors and decorative items. Currently they’re BIG. Perversely enough, a mega-sized, clashingly bright or patterned vase, bowl, clock, or piece of furniture can make even a small space seem richer, infused with more personality; more expansive. So no need to be shy! Take a walk on the opulent side.

inding through the Crown Range to Wanaka, I got a real feel for how smooth the new generation platform will run in New Zealand conditions. Called the ‘Edge’ in the northern hemisphere, the Endura is an SUV that can provide the power and torque needed for a great drive and will fill an important space in the Ford product range. Refined and spacious, yet with a very capable boot space, I could see a strong resemblance to the Landover Discovery Sport in both looks and performance, with

a price tag starting at $73,990. The high profile of the bonnet and the 20-inch rims make for appealing eye candy but with an 154kW/450Nm engine and electronic stability program (ESP) that made cornering and drive through very pleasurable on such a challenging drive, it’s much more than just a good looker. I was going to try it on the rough gravel road to Cardona ski field but was way laid at the Cardona Distillery, a must see when in Otago, testing the orange liqueur, vodka and gin. The silver-lining of this

hold up was that I got the opportunity to find out what the passenger experience is like while my companion on the trip drove back. Key features include leather trim and seating, Apple CarPlay, eight-inch colour touch screen, heated seats – great for those cold Queenstown mornings – and with a great satellite navigation system in such a quiet cabin, you hardly heard the drive. Overall the experience was brilliant; a worthy addition to the Ford line-up and a great option for someone looking for a quality SUV.

Flushed with the success of Cars and Coffee’s New Zealand launch at Auckland’s Viaduct last year, car obsessed event founders Ian Chan and Sean Young were determined to bring that action south. “We were blown away at the success of the first New Zealand launch in Auckland back in 2017, so we had no doubts that Christchurch would be just as successful, if not greater,” Chan says. “Our mission was always, and still is, to bring the C&C brand to all of New Zealand. We all know that little old New Zealand has a great presence of supercars and classics and our goal is to give New Zealand the opportunity to shine on the global C&C platform.” Lined up for all to see were so many greatest hits of current and classic automotive mecca. Thoroughbreds like Ferraris 458 and F12, Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, McLaren 650S Spyder, a gorgeous Lancia Stratos

Replica, and countless Porsches, including a very tasty 911 RSR, kept Euro enthusiasts, and myself, very happy. Lovers of American Iron were also spoiled, with ZR1 Corvettes, Mustangs, a Cobra, and a 600 Horsepower Camaro attracting green eyed stares. Also, the new Honda Civic Type R and legendary NSX showcased Japan’s fastest toys. Sean has a deep knowledge of Christchurch’s supercar scene and knew there would be a big turnout. “Well we know for a fact there is a high calibre of cars present in Christchurch. Anything from your latest Astons, Lamborghinis, Ferraris such as the F12, Porsche GT3s, to the likes of true classics such as Lancias, 930 turbos, Morgans, Fords... the list goes on. We want to bring out the best of Christchurch, that’s for sure.” Can we expect another Christchurch Cars and Coffee in the future? “We are aiming to make the event bi-annual at least but would love to see more in the calendar year,” Sean says. All in all, Cars and Coffee Christchurch provided all the entertainment a passionate petrolhead could have on a Sunday morning. Oh, and the coffee was terrific too.

The last time we saw a Mitsubishi ‘Eclipse’ it was during early noughties and it was a soft, wallowy coupe built for the American market. Now though, like it did with the Mirage, Mitsubishi has resurrected the Eclipse brand to showcase its latest sports soft roader, the Eclipse Cross.

or those after something smaller than an Outlander, yet bigger than an ASX, the Eclipse Cross fills a gap in an evergrowing niche market for the Japanese manufacturer. Visually the Eclipse is the Marmite of the motoring world – its edgy styling won’t be to everyone’s taste, but the distinctive

sharp angles and one of a kind tail section brings a real statement to the Mitsubishi family. The range consists of four models, starting with the entry point 2WD XLS at $41,690 and finishes with our test car, the top of the range AWD VRX at $47,590.

All variants come standard with Mitsubishi’s infotainment system with seven-inch screen, Apple Car Play and Android Auto. All infotainment functions are controlled by a mousepad in easy reach of the driver, though it does require a frim press. Other standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, lane departure warning, and reversing camera. The VRX we tested, thanks to its $5,900 premium, over-the-entry-level XLS, comes with adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, heated electric seats and a very clear and concise head-up display. The interior itself, for driver and passengers, is a nice place to be. Leather chairs are very supportive and sitting upright makes for a good driving position. Rear passenger headroom is a tad restrictive due to the sloping roof line and 374 litres of boot space is modest at best. However, drop the 60-40 split rear seats and this increases to 653 litres. All models also share Mitsubishi’s all-new 1.5-litre MIVEC turbo petrol engine with 112kW of power and 254Nm of torque. Mated to an eight-speed CVT auto, you will be returning fuel figures of 7.3L/100km. On the move, power delivery from the MIVEC Turbo is linear and very smooth. Electric power steering does lack in feel but still manages to be sharp and precise. The high riding stance means you aren’t as planted in the bends and it does get a bit wobbly, but thanks to the AWD system, there is plenty of grip on hand to keep you out of the trees.

The Eclipse Cross shines best when cruising motorways and suburbia. On the former, simply set the adaptive cruise control at 100km/h and the engine just hums as you waft along on a wave of torque. Plus the addition of suspension and damper tweaks makes for a sublime ride. All in all, thanks to a sweet power unit, good levels of equipment, and that love or hate styling, the all-new Eclipse Cross, despite a few niggles, is well-worth considering.

The man at the Rangiora Caltex was in awe. “Wow beautiful car mate! It’s a Stingray aye?” One could not fault him on his observation skills, for the car in my care for the day was a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, one of the true giants of automotive Americana.

mounted push button AM radio and electric windows. Hold the brake pedal, turn the key and that delicious V8 triumphantly fires. At idle you can almost hear every single cylinder firing. Ah the grumbling bliss of a simple small block. Once in drive and on the move, you quickly remember you are driving a fiftyyear-old American car, and all which that implies. Steering is very vague and you won’t be coming to a stop quickly, but you forget all that the moment you give it stick. Feed in the power and that muscular bonnet, which seems to stretch to the horizon, rises with ease. In the bends it actually tracks well despite the complete lack of steering feel and its prehistoric leaf spring suspension set up. However, the Corvette comes into its own when out for a cruise. Whether rumbling around your local suburban stomping ground or at 100km/h along a straight North Canterbury road with one arm on the wheel and one out the window, the Stingray makes you giggle as it turns heads and devours the miles. Then as soon as it arrived, it was gone. And, as this writer watched it rumble away, the words from the man at Caltex rang loud and clear, “What a beautiful car”. And the Corvette Stingray is just that. Beautiful.

T

he Corvette is the definitive allAmerican sports car. Having been in continuous production since 1953, very few people, petrolheads or not, haven’t heard of Chevrolet’s wild child. While countless variants have come and gone, each of which have their equal share of fans, the second-generation Corvette Stingray represents, for many, the Corvette’s finest hour. This 67 Stingray, supplied by Waimak Classic Cars, has all the muscle and style of Muhammad Ali. Whether you take in the beefed up rear haunches, pop up headlights, shark gill like side air vents, text book long bonnet with sloping rear coupe lines, or the wrap around rear window (earlier models had a split rear screen), a Stingray is a car you can gawp at for hours. Like Ali in the ring, the Stingray’s 5.2-litre 327 Cubic Inch V8 packs a punch. While many lust after the 427 Big-Block, the workhorse 327, in this writer’s opinion, provides more than enough grunt than is needed. Producing a claimed 300 hp, it’s mated to a three-speed automatic box, which happens to be silky smooth. The Stingray’s cabin is one of simplicity. The wood rim wheel and simple white on black instruments stare at you, while the oversized analogue clock takes centre stage. Other options include a sideways
