ith Canterbury Fashion Week next week, and our latest cover a fashionable nod to what we can expect from this year's show, I've been thinking quite a lot about the subject. Generating billions of dollars per annum in New Zealand, fashion is the untameable beast at the heart of consumer culture. The chameleon like nature of the industry keeps loyalists to 'what's hot and what's not' on their toes, and leaves the rest of us who consider ourselves a 'work in progress' rather perplexed. All of this 'threads and kicks' talk has inspired some nostalgic and rather cringeinducing memories for me as I reflect on my style – or rather unstylish evolution. It would be difficult to determine which of the styles I donned as a kid of the eighties and nineties eras deserves the 'most heinous' fashion faux pas title. My obsession with unflattering fabrics; oversized, wideleg jeans, and tie-dye leggings with slouch socks spring to mind as does a denim 'cowgirl' styled dress covered in sequins, which I picked up second-hand shopping with my As the world seems to be moving at an ever-increasing pace, Mum and wore to the point of its extinction. SPOT A SPECTACULAR

By Nicholas Henare

If you’re looking for a long weekend away from the Garden City, Queenstown is an old favourite.

14 November 23, 2017 Metropol

ituated in the heart of Kawarau Village on the edge of Lake Wakatipu, DoubleTree by Hilton Queenstown boasts spectacular views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Family-friendly restaurants, bars and a café are a stone’s throw away. There’s no better way to start the day than breakfast at Wakatipu Grill. The restaurants, bars, wineries and cafés in Queenstown are all exceptional; who can go past Rata or Madam Woo, for starters? Water taxis are available from the on-site jetty to the town centre if a long lunch or night out is what you’re after. Access to the lake and water activities is at the front door and, if it’s skiing you’re after, Remarkables or Coronet is less than an hour’s drive. For adrenalin junkies, bungy jumping, the Shotover Jet and Fly By Wire are amongst a plethora of local activities, while the Earnslaw, a refurbished 1912 steamship, is a wonderful 1.5 hour trip across Lake Wakitipu. You can take one of the bikes available at Double Tree and see some of the amazing scenic bike rides and the walking tracks are at your fingertips. My weekend was a mix of fashion, food and frivolity, but my home away from home at the Double Tree by Hilton was exceptional. After all, use a great hotel as your home base and you can’t go wrong.

irector, choreographer and costume designer Stephen Robertson transports audiences to 1920s Chicago with an authentic stage setting, stunning costumes and iconic musical numbers such as ‘All That Jazz’ and ‘Roxie’ under the musical direction of Richard Marrett. Chicago will run from 25 November to 20 January. Playwright Maureen Dallas Watkins wrote the original play as a satire of the justice system in 1926, based on two murder trials she covered during a stint as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune. “While being a loved classic, it is just as relevant today as it was in the ’20s, if not more so – especially with the rise of the internet,” says Marketing Manager Samantha McConnell. “The media sensationalises murderess Roxie Hart, turning her into a darling of the press. We see this all the time in modern media.” Nomi Cohen perfectly portrays Roxie, the wannabe vaudeville performer who shot her cheatin’ good-for-nothin’ lover. Fellow murderess Velma Kelly is played by Darlene Mohekey, with her powerhouse opera-trained voice. Roy Snow becomes Billy Flynn, the silver-tongued lawyer, promising the lure of stardom and escape from death row. “The cast is exceptional and the audience will recognise a few familiar faces.” Before the evening shows, The Court’s wood-fired pizzas and licenced bar is ideal for groups of friends and colleagues to share in this feast of scandalous musical theatre. foo Everyone’s favourite

In the dramatic season-two finale of MasterChef, Jax Hamilton’s elaborate macaroon tower collapsed and crashed to the floor, with her dreams of winning the MasterChef title falling to pieces along with her dessert. But she won the heart of the nation and now everyone’s favourite foodie, Jax Hamilton has a new project, ‘Jax Food Hax’.

18 November 23, 2017 Metropol

How did the idea for Jax Food Hax come about? What made you want to create easy and quick meals for people who don’t have a lot of time to cook? Following the breakdown of my 18-year marriage, 11 years ago, I found myself a single mother of two teenage boys, with voracious appetites and a very small food budget. I was also a working mother, so I needed to really look at the ingredients in my pantry that I had already purchased (with new eyes) in order to create delicious, filling meals with personality for my boys. Also I only had half the time in which to do so and I couldn’t afford any waste. What is your favourite (secret) spot in Christchurch? Taylors Mistake beach at twilight with fish and chips. 3. If you could pick one of your favourite dishes to cook and eat what would it be? Whitebait and Scallop ravioli with a Limoncello and Dill sauce – significantly my best dish this year. The sauce can also be drizzled over oysters, scallops (in the shell) or over mussels with my breadcrumb hax, grilled to seafood perfection. Or you can poach some white fish in it – divine.

Did you find your cooking style changed when you moved to New Zealand, was there a difference in the availability of ingredients etc that meant you had to change what you were used to doing? I’m a Jamaican, cockney, New Zealand citizen. Whenever I travel, I always investigate the natural pantry of the region, which is what I’ve always done, especially when I lived in London and travelled to Europe most months. New Zealand is no different, when I arrived, I’d never eaten, feijoa, persimmon, pumpkin, paua, NZ Whitebait, kina, pikopiko and mutton bird. The food here has had a significant impression on the way I cook and lends well to my Jamaican heritage. What would you say is the key to making good food for someone who can’t cook? People are always more engaged when they have invested part of themselves in the process. Get them to help, taste and be proud of what they’ve achieved. My kitchen is open and full of personality. It was designed so that anyone sitting at the breakfast bar can interact with me and be part of the process when I cook: chop, stir, taste – it’s very participant-friendly and colourful. If you didn’t become a chef, what would you have done instead? If I wasn’t a chef, I would play clarinet for the London Symphony Orchestra or be a contemporary dancer. If you could name a secret talent, apart from cooking, what would it be? Er, if I tell you it won’t be secret anymore! I’m a genius recorder player. If you had to put together the most classic kiwi dish you could think of, what would be in it? I’d probably make some lamb, mint and kumara sausages. Chop them up and pop them in a pie with a mint sauce then top with grated cheese………mmm mmm mmm ooh I feel a recipe coming on.

Why is putting personality and love into your cooking so important for you? Is it a philosophy you try to incorporate in your life too? Food is like music; it has the same language of any good book. Personality and love are the drivers of my cooking…. they fulfill the needs of everyone in the world. G N I D R REWA DESIGN

What attracted you to the fashion design industry? I’ve always fancied the creative and visionary aspect of design. I love textiles and design, for me, starts with fabrication and colour. I have a limited attention span, so the whole process and variety involved in sourcing fabric, working with collection colour palettes and textures, cutting a pattern, fitting, sewing (although this is best left in someone else’s capable hands these days) and finishing appeals. Being able to wear it or even more satisfying, seeing someone else enjoying a garment I’ve designed, is incredibly rewarding, I still get a kick out of it. What’s your design philosophy? With the abundance of what is on offer and the constant stimulation in modern society, I have over the last few years felt a real need to simplify my world, which has organically extended to design. Better and fewer is my philosophy, I take a more minimal approach these days, with quality in design, make and fabrication as my guide. Items may cost a little more, but will last and be loved for longer, and fewer will be required. Where do you draw your inspiration from? Absolutely everything and everywhere, I’ve been described as a magpie before, as I seem to have a honing mechanism that seeks out newness or fresh interpretations on old favourites. Immersed in a busy life with two teenagers, I don’t have the luxury of sketching for hours, or researching online for current or historic fashion, so I’m looking to people, music, objects, cuisine, and nature and especially travel for design inspiration. There’s never a shortage as I can incorporate it into my every day. What are some of the looks we can expect to see coming through in the upcoming sartorial season? I am a big fan of athleisure, the juxtaposition of sport and luxe has resulted in a trend that is versatile and practical, but polished and sophisticated. The three collections we design all have elements of this trend, ranging from trench coats in active wear fabrications, dress pants in sweat shirting finished with sporty stripes in rich satins, and luxurious soft cotton blend knits in sweatshirts, joggers, and more unexpectedly in skirts and dresses.

With a new store at Merivale Mall, Caroline Sills Head Designer Ange Todd talks fashion.

WARDROBE ADD A TOUCH OF MAGIC TO YOUR

If you adore fine natural fabrics like silks and wools, and love to express yourself in fashion, then prepare to be utterly seduced by the gorgeousness on offer at Bettie Monroe at The Colombo.

I

ndeed, my own intended content-gathering chat with lovely Helen Fraser who, along with Lucy Thomas, owns and designs for their six New Zealand boutiques, resulted in me leaving with four delicious additions to my wardrobe. All entirely justifiable purchases of course… “Each garment adds a touch of magic to your wardrobe with vibrant colours and delightful prints,” Helen says. Designing for twelve years, Helen and Lucy take great pride in being fully New Zealand designed and made, employing 30 staff in house and up to 20 more out of house. There are new arrivals every week and, by always listening to their customers, the most popular items are remade in different fabrics.

Helen loves the way their clothes empower women: they design fun adjustable clothes for all silhouettes. The capped-sleeve Sophia wrap dress in luscious red print is wearable five different ways. It’s ideal for cocktails midnight Saturday, then reverse it Monday morning to create a high neck for an office lunch and Christmas cake with great aunt Prudence on Wednesday. The Kaya dress in azure 100 per cent silk is perfect for sophisticated parties or cool calm Christmas shopping. Wearable eight different ways, it can be structured, billowing, or use the clever tabs at the hem for floaty and flowing. As Helen and Lucy say “go to gorgeousness”. Go to Bettie Monroe.

o-owner Deborah Lewthwaite says the team “find huge satisfaction in treating customers well, making women feel beautiful as well as comfortable”. Clients respond with feedback such as “lovely service, I felt beautiful walking out” and “I felt like myself again after going through a difficult time”. With winter layers shed, our silhouette is more visible. Deborah says they can create the perfect foundation for uplift, support and shape under t-shirts and sheer layers. For summer dresses, The Fitting Room has strapless bras in sizes 8-22, as well as up to GG cup size. If your backless dress doesn’t

lend itself to strapless, the store also stocks a breast uplift tape in three sizes, up to cup size H. Gifts receive free gift boxing and wrapping. Luxury items that women might not buy for themselves are popular and the team can assist with sizing, or choose a gorgeous chemise where exact size is less crucial. Deborah says new styles are added to favourites every month and they are always trialling new brands such as Parfait, which joins existing French favourite Chantelle, now available in cup sizes C DD. Much-loved UK brand Fantasie is a store fixture and is available up to an H cup.

NO SUCH THING AS A

healthy tan Dr Frost’s philosophy at Face Value Cosmetic Clinic is usually ‘Less is more’ however, when it comes to sun protection for your skin, the reverse is true.

hen asked about the single most important aspect of skin care, using a high quality, broad spectrum sunscreen is his top tip. Summer can be especially harmful for our skin, with excessive sun exposure, hot dry winds and air conditioning playing a part. The sun’s rays are a main cause of skin damage, resulting in uneven pigmentation, dehydration, wrinkles, thickening and general signs of aging.

26 November 23, 2017 Metropol

Follow these steps to care for your summer skin:

1.

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen, every day… even when it’s cloudy. Reapply frequently, especially after swimming or exercise.

2.

Don’t forget the cleavage! The neck and décolletage are too often neglected and are prone to premature ageing.

3.

Exfoliate. Dead cells sit on the surface of your skin making it look dull, rough and dry. Exfoliating removes these dead cells, allowing your radiant summer skin to shine through, while allowing new cells to regenerate faster.

4.

Moisturise and hydrate. It is tempting to ease up on moisturising in summer because your skin may not feel as dry. But good moisturisers and hydrating serums work over time, promoting healthy skin with consistent use.

5.

Watch out for photosensitivity; some medications, and even herbal products like St Johns Wort, can make your skin more sensitive to sun exposure, increasing the risk of sunburn. Talk to your general practice team if you are taking any medications.

T

op of the popularity list at South City is ‘Selfies with Santa’, the little twist the centre has given to having photos taken with Father Christmas. Bring your children and your mobile device and track Santa down wherever he may be in the complex between 12pm - 2pm daily from December 16-23. He could be in the food court; he could be in a shop; he could even be having 40 winks somewhere. Once you have found him, take your own photo with him. He might even have a few lollies in his pockets to give away to children who have been nice, not naughty. Having gifts wrapped is always helpful for people under time pressure. South City has thought of this too. From December 16-24 between 11am-7pm, St John volunteers will be in the central court and, for a gold coin donation, they will make your gift packages look stunning. There are a whole range of different papers to choose from, so there’s sure to be one that will perfectly suit the recipient of your gift. In the week before Christmas, the centre is open Monday - Saturday from 9am-7pm and on Sunday December 17 and 24, until 6pm. New World and The Warehouse have slightly longer hours. Then after Christmas, on New Year’s Day, South City will again be running the ‘South City on Sale’ event, where one lucky shopper who visits the centre will win a huge prize pack. Check out South City’s Facebook page for more details.

LEARNING BARRIERS The Seabrook McKenzie Centre is an education centre for those with Specific Learning Disabilities. This, an umbrella term that covers such conditions such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia. The centre provides assessments, guidance, referral services and specialised tuition to between 250 and 300 students, with 31 specially trained teachers registered with the centre.

A

t Seabrook McKenzie assessments are wide, ensuring all possible sources of difficulties are covered. The results and recommendations address ‘barriers to life’ as well as ‘barriers to learning’. For example, when working with adults, short term memory and organisational difficulties are often more of a problem in employment than literacy is. For young people a word finding difficulty that affects verbal communication can be a bigger source of embarrassment than poor maths or reading. The centre’s approach targets confidence and wellbeing first, then cognitive processes and academic skills to give best results. “We aim to give a breathing pace and ease pressure while working on all the above, by restoring belief in themselves, lessening anxiety and maladaptive coping behaviour and ensuring success by working from where they are in small steps,” Registered Psychologist and Clinical Director at Seabrook McKenzie Centre, Anne Stercq, explains.

“We teach strategies – not just academic skills, but organisation and social skills too.” This approach enables students to progress despite their difficulties, by minimising social and school barriers to learning. Tutors who provide highly individualised intervention that complements help given by school and accommodations (such as teacher aides, reader writers, technology and cooperative learning) means they get results at Seabrook McKenzie. “The school has now been going for 10 years and it is a pleasure to see how these young people, some with very severe difficulties, have gone on to achieve their aims, passing NCEA level 3 and UE, successfully obtaining trade qualifications,” Stercq continues. Seabrook also runs Touch Type Read and Spell programme (which just won an educational award in the UK) after school specifically designed for students with dyslexia. Visit www.seabrookmckenzie.net.

TREATMENT AVAILABLE

Between 10 and 20 per cent of people in the western world suffer from gastroesophageal reflux. This is a condition in which gastric content from the stomach is brought up to the oesophagus (on a much more regular basis than for those of us who might periodically overreach ourselves on curry night).

A

ffecting people of all ages including babies, symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux can be mild, such as an acidic taste in the mouth, regurgitation, heartburn, belching and bloating; or more severe, including chest pain, difficultly in swallowing, asthma, coughing, or choking at night. Sufferers find the symptoms individually or in clusters, quite negatively impact their quality of life. Ongoing and untreated severe gastroesophageal reflux can lead to serious complications such as ulceration, narrowing of the oesophagus, and a condition known as Barrett’s Oesophagus, where the cells lining the oesophagus in the affected area are changed and may become cancerous over time. Ross Roberts, Specialist at The Endoscopy Clinic, 9 Caledonian Road, has practised since 1998 in Christchurch in areas including gastrointestinal surgery, gastroesophageal reflux, endoscopy (including colonoscopy and gastroscopy) and hernia surgery. He says people need not and should not continue to suffer. Mild cases can be treated with dietary changes, weight loss, over-the-counter medications, and raising bed heads. Where symptoms are significant or severe, a proton pump inhibitor medication, such as Omeprazole, can be used.

If medication fails to fully control the reflux, or a patient prefers not to take medication long term, laparoscopic surgery is available to repair defects in the diaphragm, or to strengthen a weak lower oesophageal sphincter. “In our experience surgery is successful in 90 per cent of patients who benefit from long term symptom control and so an improved quality of life,” Ross says He recommends sufferers see their GP first, as investigation of persistent systems is advised however, most people will not require surgery. Clinic Practice Nurse Debbie Osborn supports Ross with assessment, oesophageal function testing, dietary advice and pre-and post-operative care, and endoscopy. Endoscopy is a day procedure done at a dedicated centre nearby. Keyhole surgery requires a two-day hospital stay, but most patients are back to work in two weeks, Ross says. “The laparoscopic approach has revolutionised treatment in this area and sometimes people are not aware that large abdominal incisions are no longer required.” Ross says most insurance plans do cover surgical procedures, but advises patients check on cover for diagnostic testing with their insurer. ow we’ve made a home for the first ever New Zealand Bike Expo, with the first annual event held last month. Approximately 3,500 people attended the twoday event at the Wigram Air Force Museum. “We are absolutely stoked with the response to the expo,” says Cycling Action Network (CAN) spokesperson Jo Mackay. “We aimed to create a consumer show that would attract a wide range of people, who enjoy all types of biking. We’re really happy to have achieved that aim.” More than 65 exhibitors showcased bicycles, electric bicycles, bike componentry, gear, accessories, clothing, bicycle tours, trails, parks, events and nutrition. Visitors tested bicycles out on the large airfield and runway, with electric bikes the outstanding new feature that many came to try; 23 different electric bike brands were on show. The bicycle smoothie blender operated by Frocks on Bikes was a popular drawcard, as was Christchurch Adventure Park’s CAP LAP mini-bike circuit, and Keith Guthrie from Cycle Trading Company’s exhibition of penny farthings, velocipedes and a 1970s BMX. “About a quarter of people in Christchurch are on a bike at least once a week,” Jo says. “Christchurch was the right place to hold our first expo and it’s the right time with cycling on the up across all fronts – sport, commuting, competitive cycling and holidaying.” The dates for the next NZ Bike Expo will be announced before Christmas. ARTISTICALLY EXCEPTIONAL

“I’ve drawn and made art all my life,” Artist Nina Cook says. “Drawing and painting are part intellectual curiosity for me and part passion. The content, colour and form in art thrill me.”

F

rom her studio in Westmorland, Nina Cook creates exquisite oil paintings on a wide range of subjects and genre. Nina is endlessly curious and largely self-taught, mastering her media though books, experimentation and years of practice. Her work is exhibited at the Little River Gallery and at Kereru Gallery in Nelson. “What I do is difficult to categorise. I focus on developing and mastering classical techniques, but am always open to new ways of using media. Fine art with a personal touch is what I offer to any person who would like to buy or commission a work from me.” Visitors can purchase from existing work that is displayed in Nina’s studio, or commission a

bespoke piece made to their requirements. Creating works especially for clients excites Nina. “My studio is open by appointment. I love people to visit, be inspired and discuss their ideas with me.” With such a creative mind Nina can bring virtually any concept to life, but she does specialise in portraits of children. “Portraiture is a real honour.” A recent commissioned work depicts three children in a waka. The client and the children themselves were ecstatic with the outcome. “We love our painting,” they wrote to Nina. “You have done an amazing job capturing the children’s individual personalities and interests. We believe you are a unique and special talent. Thank you.”

cuisine COCKTAIL CRAZE By Melinda Collins

First it was the freakshake. Now it’s our cocktails that are getting an innovative makeover, as a global groundswell of extreme cocktails pushes palates to the extreme.

W

here once it might have just been the names that were on that outlandish side, today’s tipples have gone next level. So much so, that police became involved with one bar which was producing an illegal Japanese whale-skin whisky. The same venue uses bee pollen syrup, traditionally only fed to a queen bee and offers a glossary on its menu to explain their plankton, specifically cross-bred by a Michelin-starred chef exclusively for their culinary use. The 1691, available from London’s Worship Street Whistling Shop, blends goats cheese, raspberry, Grand Marnier reduction and vodka. That’s your starter, dessert, shot and nightcap all in one.

Also available in London, the Kobe Cocktail at Sushisamba uses Kobe beef as a wash, with the addition of maple syrup and salted caramel in a somewhat unique take on the classic Old Fashioned cocktail. Botanist is the newest addition to Vancouver’s vibrant culinary scene, inspired by the principles of botany. Although that sounds conventional enough, its cocktails (pictured) incorporate blue algae, drift wood, forest moss and bird nests. Which really gives new meaning to the concept of foraged fare.

CELLAR SELECTIONS By Allison O’Neill

Whether you know nothing, little or lots about wine, tasting rooms are the place to learn a whole lot more. With them set out in front of you, you can find out for yourself. You don’t leave wondering. Tasting at the cellar door is a wine experience to be savoured.

Ataahua Wine

Fiddler’s Green

83 Church Road, Waipara Cellar door only, no tastings The Māori translation of Ātaahua is beautiful. The goal at Ataahua Wine is to translate the beauty of the vineyard into the wines the land produces.

Georges Road, Waipara Tastings 11am-5pm on Saturdays and Sundays The striking double gates greet first, then ‘the vineyard girl’ (a dog called Jem). A foundation member of Sustainable Winegrowing NZ which provides a framework for environmentally and economically sustainable viticultural practices.

Pukeko Junction

Muddy Water Wines

263 Stockgrove Rd, Waipara Tastings daily 10-5pm, restaurant Thursday to Monday, 12-4 pm The restaurant creates its menu around their wine list. On a summer’s day you can enjoy the outdoor area with beautiful gardens, lakes and their unique wetlands while, in winter, the large open fire creates atmosphere inside.

458 Ashworths Road, Leithfield Open Tuesday to Sunday 9-4:30pm Pukeko Junction is a destination café. The food is all made in-house, from the bread to the tarts, cakes, sauces and fresh salads. The adjoining shop sells wine from the region and beyond.

376 Omihi Rd, Waipara Cellar door (Shared with Greystone Wines) daily 11am-4pm Muddy Water is a literal translation of ‘Waipara’. Muddy Water was the first certified organic winery in Canterbury, all its wines are certified AsureQuality organic. As some New Zealand wine brands become more commercialised, Muddy Water’s aim is the opposite – small batches with soul.

Waipara Springs 409 Omihi Rd, Waipara Cellar door and restaurant open daily 11am-5pm Planted in the early 1980s, the vineyard contains some of the oldest vines in the valley, providing the entirely estate grown wines with a depth and intensity that only old vines can produce.

Waipara Hills Winery 780 Glasnevin Road, Waipara Cellar door and restaurant open daily 10am-5pm Formerly Canterbury House and then Mud House, Waipara Hills must be the region’s most iconic winery. The café is a fabulous place to spend an afternoon post-tasting.

Terrace Edge 328 Georges Rd, Waipara Open for tastings Thursday to Sunday 11am-4:30pm, tours on request Terrace Edge is certified organic by BioGro. Developing healthy soils, meticulously managing the vines to prevent disease and using only naturally derived products is all part of the belief that everything in nature can work together.

Torlesse Wines Loffhagen Dr, Waipara Open for tastings daily 11-5pm A foundation Member of Greening Waipara and Biodiversity Trails, Torlesse was the first winery in Waipara to bottle with the screw cap.

Greystone Wines

Mt. Beautiful

376 Omihi Road, Waipara Tasting daily 11am-4pm As well as cellar door tasting, Greystone does a tour each weekday at 12.30pm, which includes a winery and vineyard tour, barrel tasting and artisan platter. You’ll see how they make wine and have the opportunity to taste wine straight from the barrel.

11 Hall Street, Cheviot Weekdays (closed Tuesday) 12-5pm, weekends 11am-5pm The Tasting Room is adjacent to the Two Rivers Café in central Cheviot. Wine tasters can order from their menu and enjoy meals seated in the Tasting Room while experiencing Mt. Beautiful wines.

CLEVER S R E R E T CA Innovation is a covetable commodity in the context of our culinary creators, but with liquid nitrogen desserts just one of the unique creations gracing the menus of this Christchurch Hospitality Awards Caterer of the Year, this is where Eaton Drink Co. excels. Metropol talks to Owners Toby Eaton and Nikki Collins.

The Eaton Drink Company has a cool and creative take on food and drink. Are you focusing on one or the other at present? There is no one thing specifically, we are always focussing on both the food and drink elements; we spend hours creating new, innovative menus for our clients. Where do you two draw your creative inspiration from? Most of our inspiration is from international chefs, bars and restaurants, whether through blogs and mood boards or through reading about their techniques and then trialling things here. We aim to raise the bar in catering for Christchurch, bringing restaurant quality food and service to our clients in all sorts of venues. What are you most famous for? That’s a hard one, it depends if you’re asking about food or drink. Toby is famous for his cocktails and unconventional beverage matches, alongside Nikki’s food. And Nikki for creative menus. However, we have just launched liquid nitrogen desserts to Christchurch, so that may be the new craze for a while! What are your own favourite cocktails? Toby’s is a Blood and Sand made with Gunpowder Rum. And Nikki’s, an Aviation. Is experimentation with new recipes high on your list this summer? We have no set menus, we are constantly experimenting with concepts and combinations to create one off unique menus for our clients. If there is something a bit ‘out there’, we will experiment the concept on friends first. Can you predict any foodie or drinking trends for New Zealand in the near future? Sustainability awareness – buying sustainable products and implementing sustainable practices. It is already happening here, but as a country there is still a long way to go. Simple ingredient lists of unique products, with uncomplicated and clean flavours. True global style fusion and a turn to old techniques to add interest.

Spend your precious time making memories - while we fill your kitchen with gorgeous home baking this Christmas... Find out why our customers say, “We love it” and keep coming back year after year. Summer’s

CULINARY ADVENTURES By Amy Wilkinson

A new season offers the perfect opportunity to introduce some new flavours into your life. We’ve stumbled across some of summer’s most scrumptious new selections. Frosé The perfect girly-girls’ rosé has had a facelift. With a sweet and refreshing taste, this drink has been popular overseas and sets to win the hearts of locals. Place the drink into a tray and into the freezer until almost frozen (it won’t solidify because of the alcohol), then blend to create a slushy consistency. Decorate with strawberries or other photogenic fruit and a straw to get the perfect pairing for a variety of meals.

Tacos The ultimate no-fuss food is set to make its return for summer. Perfect to throw together at short notice, tacos can satisfy even the fussiest of eaters. Almost anything can be used as a filling, making it the perfect meal to share with friends and family. Cook up a range of fillings and sides for the tacos, serve down the centre of the table and dig in.

WWW.

Bowl dishes These Insta-worthy bowl foods are perfect for summer, with the Hawaiian Poke bowls (pronounced po-kay) set to make a culinary impression in New Zealand. They typically contain fresh, raw seafood (usually cubed) mixed with soy sauce, green onions and sesame oil over a bed of rice. Super easy to customise, poke bowls are a creative and healthy sibling to traditional sushi. Be prepared to swap the plate for a bowl this season as more bowl dishes become popular!

hen it comes to dining and eating out, when is the best time? Do you go early, as in 5.30 or 6pm when few are about and you can be served quickly, in relative peace? Or do you wait until the venue’s heaving and watch hawk-like over tables which might soon be vacated, to pounce on your seats? I guess it depends on personality. A hungry introvert might opt for the former; an extrovert the latter, when there’s plenty of scope for people-watching and networking. If you’re not intimately acquainted with your local urban scene, dining early can hold pitfalls. You can’t tell an eatery’s popularity as easily. That’s where Trip-Advisor

46 November 23, 2017 Metropol

or other online review sites are so great. It’s actually not all bad to occasionally take a couple of good friends and head out to eat at an anticipatory hour. It’s akin to avoiding traffic rushes. As our city expands and attracts us once more in droves to the centre, dining early will make perfect sense. Plusses include being free to not hurry. You can really talk, listen and have a laugh without overhearing louder neighbouring conversations. No-one hustles your courses away early. Afterward, the evening is still young. There’s walking time left to you, which cancels out dessert sinfulness.

The authentic Indian cuisine at Pepper Bridge Restaurant offers a sumptuous, unique taste, with each dish made from scratch, combining fresh local produce with years of experience.

O

wner Sani Thomas opened the restaurant two years ago after selling his popular ‘food van’ business. Manager Roy Poulose says the menu offers a distinctive Indian flavour. “We are very different to other local restaurants and our curry is the best in town – we have customers from all over the city.” Along with the firm favourites, a range of new dishes has recently been added to the extensive menu – although the high quality and affordable prices remain the same. The Chilli Chicken – boneless deep-fried chicken cubes marinated with spices and cooked with capsicum, onion, garlic and a blend of soya sauce, chili sauce and vinegar – is still very popular, Roy says. “This dish is mildly hot, sweet and sour – it’s unique, spicy and very special.” Seafood is another specialty of the chefs at Pepper Bridge – the prawn Malabari curry, garlic prawn and seafood platter are a delicious choice. For lunchtime diners, the half portion combo deals offer great value, for less than $10. Located at Addington Mall, the BYO restaurant caters to gluten-free and vegan diners, as well as functions, and also offers takeaway and delivery options – including via UberEats, Menulog and Food Taxi. For excellent quality Indian fare, a warm, welcoming environment and friendly staff, phone 03-595 0442 or visit www.pepperbridge.co.nz.

VOGUE By Melinda Collins

The New Year offers the perfect opportunity to introduce a new aesthetic into the home. So we’ve discovered the interior trends which are set to make the hearts of décor darlings go pitter patter.

HEATHERLY DESIGN

W

hile the pared back look of modern minimalism has been dominating the home market throughout 2016 and most of 2015, we’re relinquishing our hold on the ‘less is more aesthetic’ to make way for a more relaxed, lived-in vibe. Because, although the Scandinavian style still inspires, life philosophies such as hygge and wabi-sabi, which encourage the authentic signs of a living presence in the home, are offering an easier to maintain aesthetic. In line with this transformation, colours too are warming up from the clean neutral palette, with hushed chalky tones bridging the transformative gap between neutrals and bold primary colours. While at the International Home + Housewares Show, Pantone Colour Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman predicted a continued infatuation with iridescence and “anything pearlised” in 2018, while emerald greens, terracottas and muted blue hues continue to bring balance to a busy world. As we rebel against a culture of mass-production, our spaces too are becoming more meaningful, offering authenticity to our internal spaces, with indoor plants, bold artworks and plenty of textures lending themselves to warmth of character, not just warmth of appearance. We look at some of our favourite interior trends, including millennial pink and the wabi-sabi aesthetic in the pages ahead. Enjoy.

MILLENNIAL PINK:

MAKES the HOME By Kate Pierson

Long synonymous with sugar, spice and all things nice, pink has had a facelift. It’s climbed out of the ‘too hard basket’, ditched its reputation for being a tad too saccharine, and is winning affections left, right and centre.

A

ptly dubbed ‘millennial pink’ in honour of the founding generation that has helped it fulfil its potential on hangers and in habitats the world over, this game-changing hue has moved from acquired taste to musthave aesthetic. A harmonious hybrid of salmonpeach, or apricot salmon, or beige with a touch of blush (depending on which oracle of knowledge

60 November 23, 2017 Metropol

you consult), millennial pink has transformative potential when it comes to your abode. Whether you’re already a convert when it comes to this colour and want to take a liberal approach to painting your corner of the world pink, or conversely, you need some gentle coaxing to join the party, here is the most sage advice we can muster to help you introduce this beautiful tone.

The pink writing is on the wall: a feature wall or a wall decal can be a compelling way to introduce this complementary colour. It’s a match made in heaven when paired with metallics and other pastels. This is a quick and cost-effective way to introduce the aesthetic - and wall decals are the perfect ‘toe in the water’ solution for non-committal decorators.

Pillow talk: cushions/pillows are the perfect decor accent thanks to their transient nature. Millennial pink cushions are divine in velvet - another cool kid on the decor block. A picture paints a thousand words: if you want more of a statement piece, opt for a bold print in millennial pink. Abstract art is in, so pair these two pretties together. Kitchen candy: culinary designers continue to serve up a generous portion of kitchenware that dazzles in this soughtafter shade. Le Creuset is the ‘go to’ if you want to deck out your kitchen in a look as delicious as cotton candy. A blushing boudoir: guarantee yourself a night of the sweetest dreams with a look that promotes rest and relaxation. Many have extolled the virtues of a millennial pink slumber pad - the psychology behind pink is that it represents unconditional love and nurturing.

a handcrafted journey

At Corcovado, there is a story behind every piece of beautifully handcrafted furniture.

E

thically sourced and created using sustainable materials, owners Larissa and Andrew Hamilton work directly with artisans to create the Corcovado brand of products. “As conscious consumerism grows, people are more aware and not only do they want something unique that can seldom be found elsewhere, but they want to know its origins,” Larissa says. While knowing where a product comes from is important, handcrafted items also tend to have a different feel and energy. “Everything is beautifully and professionally made with time and care, but with a special handcrafted nature to them, which is something no manufacturer or machine can reproduce.” The Corcovado brand is inspired by global adventures, including the 10 years they spent living and working in various parts of Asia and Europe. Early prototypes of their best-selling furniture pieces can be found in their own home. From design and collaboration, through to selling the products in the beautiful showroom on bustling Victoria Street, Corcovado owns the entire relationship, from the creator to the Corcovado customer. “We love that our

customers want to know the story behind the investment they make – where was it made, by whom and how. We can, hand on heart, explain this process as we are there every step of the way during the creation cycle. For us, the principles of fair trade, fair working practises and pay are critical to the prosperity and success of the artisans we work with.” The business also has a strong focus on providing an amazing customer service experience, which was recently recognised by the 2017 Retail NZ Top Shop Awards, as only one of a handful of national finalists. Going above and beyond for every customer, whether it be instore, online or over the phone, the team provide a personal, proactive service. “We are very focussed on helping them to achieve their desired result. We can also customise a lot of our furniture range, which allows our customers the option to own something truly unique.” Visit the store on 137 Victoria Street or order online – delivery is available throughout New Zealand. To be notified of the latest ranges and arrivals, like Corcovado on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ corcovadostore, visit www.corcovado.co.nz or follow on Instagram @corcovadostore. Based on that philosophy, they inevitably become our clients for life.” Contractors are also a highly valued part of the team, he says. “Every single project is always completed on time and on budget. allpaper is back in vogue and bold, graphic designs are a smart way to liven up an empty wall. However, removable wall decals combine the two concepts in surprising and cost-effective ways. Removable vinyl graphics, decals are available in almost every size, shape and style. From the wisdom of a popular proverb, to realistic murals that look like a window into another world, decals can create a look to suit. Easily installed, these supersized stickers can be easily replaced when an update is called for, making them a great option for children’s bedrooms, creating a bedroom space which is easily transformed as the child grows. Stimulate your baby’s growing imagination with inspiring, whimsical and just plain gorgeous nursery wall stickers, or try some New Zealand made creations to festoon your lounge or dining spaces such as those from Your Decal Shop, www.yourdecalshop.co.nz.

I

n traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi is a philosophy centred on the acceptance of transience and imperfection; it’s about finding beauty in the ‘imperfect, impermanent and incomplete’. According to Japanese Gardens: Symbolism and Design authors Seiko Goto and Takahiro Naka, wabi refers to the appreciation of simplicity, poverty and age, while sabi speaks of the environment or objects. “Both wabi and sabi express the beauty that comes with age. This is quiet or sober refinement, a subdued taste, characterised by humility, restraint, simplicity, naturalism, profundity, imperfection and asymmetry.” At a philosophical level, wabi-sabi reminds us of the transient nature of life. Nature’s cycles of growth, decay and erosion are embodied in frayed edges,

rust and chipped paint. Through wabi-sabi, we learn to embrace both the glory and the melancholy found in these marks of passing time. It’s about learning to accept the natural cycle of growth and death, and more importantly, embracing the imperfections that come with this progression. In the home, it’s about creating a homely, lived-in aesthetic, offering a thoughtful, understated approach to design. It’s not

just about accepting imperfection as a necessary evil, but rather viewing imperfection as a positive, inherent aspect of beauty. Unlike most other decorating trends, incorporating the philosophies of wabi-sabi into your home doesn’t require a significant outlay, training or unique abilities. You simply need an appreciation of muted beauty, courage not to fear a lack of embellishment and a willingness to accept things as they are—free from superfluous ornamentation. It relies almost exclusively on one’s ability to slow down, to shift the balance from doing to being and to appreciate rather than seek to perfect. You don’t have to understand why you’re drawn to the beauty in the wabi-sabi aesthetic, but you do have to accept it as it is. Metropol November 23, 2017 67

Not simply a must-stop en-route to Banks Peninsula beauty spots, The Little River Gallery is a destination in its own right and never more so than at this time of year.

T

he gallery’s annual exhibition by female artists begins on November 25 and runs through to December 18. Entitled Signature Dish, this year’s contributing artists are Kara Burrowes, Jane Downes, Blanche Fryer, Amy Hoedemakers and Lisa Grennell. e is at his wheel on a daily basis at his gallery and pottery studio, West Melton Pottery. There is nothing he can’t make with this medium and with more than 25 years in the profession, this is no surprise. Frank makes custom items, sometimes in unexpected ways. A product he sells, called a ‘knitting bowl’ (a ceramic bowl with a hole to hold your knitting needles and a gap for the yarn to feed through) came about after a customer brought one home after a holiday in Ireland, but it broke and she desperately wanted another. Frank designed and made one for her, with the product since selling like wild fire in a variety of sizes and glaze colours. Also for sale in the gallery are a variety of gorgeous ceramic buttons, necklace pendants, bird feeders and other smaller ceramic gift ideas. A visit to the West Melton Pottery Facebook page will allow you to see the range of wares, new pieces and glaze colours as they come fresh from the kiln. Visit West Melton Pottery at 7 Westview Crescent, West Melton, 10am-4pm daily.

With the warmer weather here now, there is no better job than being a landscaper. Especially, according to Carl Gildea of Willow Landscapes, when you are on a hilltop site with a view of the city below you. “It’s hard work laying paving or lawns and building decks or balustrades, but my team and I get great satisfaction from the delight we see on our clients’ faces when we complete a job – when their vision becomes reality.” For Carl, only work of the highest standard is good enough. He has earned a well-deserved reputation for professionalism and his skill in landscape design and construction. “I won’t compromise on excellence and quality. I’m passionate about landscaping and employ staff with the same attitude to the job. Everything must be done properly and tailored to the client’s wishes and the site we are working on.” Numerous clients have benefited from

Willow Landscapes’ work. “We’ve really enjoyed the variety of work we’ve been involved with – not only complex hard landscaping features, but garden maintenance work as well. Laying new lawns and replanting garden beds for people preparing their homes for sale all contributes to that first impression potential buyers get.” Willow Landscapes also has a close working relationship with Landscape Architect Dan Cameron, so they can offer the full package from design through to finished construction and planting. “Dan and I both deeply appreciate New Zealand native plants and encourage clients to use more of these.” For a free quote call Carl on 021 536 442.

REGENERATING CHRISTCHURCH: Architect Cymon Allfrey discusses the current regularity environment in Christchurch and looks at why we need to be open to changing perceptions.

P

ut in place to take us forward, Regenerate Christchurch exists to stimulate recovery. Established in 2016, it picks up where CERA left off: formed under new legislation when the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Act expired and sees central and local government working together to rebuild our city. While CERA was there to mandate the process, this current initiative is there to push the process along in the interests of the people, with a new focus on advocacy and consultation. While they still have power to implement and influence development, during their 18 months of operation they have positioned themselves as an organisation which asks and then acts – rather than the other way around. There are no governing indications in the Resource Management Act that require

them to consult with the public to the level they do; presenting us a wonderful opportunity to put our views on the table and work through some of the tough stuff. I hope the next step will see us presented with a firm proposal addressing the issues raised in the submissions, while providing an aspirational and engaging solution. Drawing on impressive in-house expertise, they have opened the door for creative engagement from the architectural sector by engaging with emerging design talent as consultants on projects and for big picture inspirational thinking. This is a governing body offering much more than simply a delivery process to an end result. They are part way through consultation regarding the red zone regeneration, with a number of proposals around possible land use combinations for the Ōtākaro Avon

home River corridor now released. Looking at the opportunities that exist, there are a number of cultural and sport options, including a purpose-designed rowing course, as well as more sensitive proposals around housing. Essentially running from the central city to the sea, it is important to remember the red zone land was deemed uneconomical to repair in terms of the use at the time, not unusable. We know for open space to be successful it requires convenient and easy accessibility. Consider Hagley Park: while sporting activities like bowls, tennis and golf bring users from further afield, and large events like Christmas in the Park draw a crowd, the day-to-day use and

THE RED ZONE WAS DEEMED UNECONOMICAL TO REPAIR IN TERMS OF THE USE AT THE TIME, NOT UNUSABLE.”

activity is from the peripheral community; those who can walk their dog down the road and into the vast open space, or venture across the road and relax in the sun with friends and family. The argument then lies in the fact that for the Ōtākaro Avon River corridor to be successful as an open space, it would need to have the edges activated by residential development to ensure daily use. While there are many who may be resistant, we need to be open to this concept and shift

our perception of what the red zone is, allowing us to establish an attractive place to play and live. Regenerate Christchurch is an agency delivering well considered in-fill development and aspirational results. While they are working hard to provide Christchurch with an exciting future, we need to ensure we are open-minded enough to embrace the legacy they are building. Visit www.caarc.co.nz.

‘STEERING’ DOWN THE ROAD RISKS By Ben Selby

Imagine this: you approach a corner and turn right or left. However, instead of navigating the turn, the front tyres lose grip and the car continues straight on. This is called ‘understeer’. Ok, what about this? You approach the same corner, make the turn, but this time the back of the car steps out and you start to slide. This is known as ‘oversteer.’

B

UNDERSTEER Understeer is more common in front-wheel drive cars as the front wheels have the task of steering and propelling the car forward. This can put plenty of stress on the front tyres which, if you turn quickly, can become overwhelmed and give up completely, sending you careering straight on, and into that lamppost you are trying desperately to avoid. However, the same thing can occur in rear and allwheel drive cars as well. The easiest way to combat understeer in a corner, is by reducing the amount of steering lock and easing gently off the throttle. This allows the front wheels to find grip and pull you around the corner. A common mistake drivers make is they panic and try to correct the slide by applying more steering. This means the

oth understeer and oversteer can happen as a result of poor weather, poor road conditions, applying too much power, or too much braking in the bends. Either way, both can be deadly if steps aren’t taken to correct them. So, with summer road trips fast approaching, AutoPlus will show you what to do the next time you are caught unawares by understeer or oversteer.

WHAT TO DO THE NEXT TIME YOU ARE CAUGHT UNAWARES BY UNDERSTEER OR OVERSTEER.

motoring tyres will be trying harder to find grip and makes the slide worse. Others lift off the throttle completely, which can make the rear unstable and flick out, resulting in ‘lift off oversteer’, so be aware. OVERSTEER Nine times out of ten, rear-wheel drive cars are prone to oversteer, with the rear wheels losing grip in a corner and the back stepping out of line. This happens as a result of turning too hard or applying too much power. In some cases, grabbing a lower gear than normal at speed accidentally, can cause oversteer by locking the rear wheels after minimal change in direction. If you find yourself in an oversteer slide, the best thing to do is counter steer into the skid and gently lift off the throttle. For example, if turning right, gently turn in left to counteract the slide and slowly come off the gas. Put this together and your car should straighten out and regain traction. Too much power and you will spin. Whether it’s correcting an understeer or oversteer, it’s all about gentle movements. Make sure your tyres are up to scratch; the less tread you have, the less grip you have on the road. Stay safe out there.

STRENGTH SALOON SEGMENT IN THE

By Ben Selby

One does wonder about the future of up-market executive saloons; a class dominated by the BMW 5-series and the Mercedes E-Class, with other manufacturers playing catch up. Now though, Volvo’s new S90 saloon is a genuine contender for top dog and proof this segment is going from strength to strength.

V

isually, the S90 from every angle is simply stunning. Long gone are the squares and 45 degree angles of yesteryear. The S90’s simple and gorgeous lines, which are shared with the XC90 SUV, offer a great example of Swedish form

and function going hand in hand. Look carefully and you also notice a nod to Nordic mythology with the S90’s headlight design bearing a strong resemblance to Thor’s hammer. Powered by a turbocharged 2l petrol

engine and mated to a slick eight-speed automatic box with all wheel-drive, the T6 AWD Inscription spec featured here starts at $99,990 and is one of multiple petrol, diesel, and even electric hybrid variants on offer. The S90’s seemingly furniture inspired interior feels more like an exquisite lounge, rather than a cabin. Buttock-hugging heated leather chairs provide wonderful support. With a high transmission tunnel, accommodating the AWD system, you feel snugly cocooned a nice reminder of Volvo’s commitment to your safety. Every switch and button feels well put

together and the iPad style infotainment system, which allows you to access all the S90’s many standard features, is easy to get your head around, though the lack of an easy to reach main control device means you are left swiping up or down on the screen while on the move. My test car was fitted with the optional ‘S90 Premium Pack’ which included rear air suspension, sun blinds for rear passengers housed in the rear doors and the epic Bowers and Wilkins sound system which in the ‘Gothenburg Concert Hall’ setting, is the closest one would get to having Pink Floyd live while on the move. Around town, the S90’s gorgeous lines do not escape the notice of passersby and every shop window provides you with an excuse to gaze upon those gorgeous lines. A360 degree view reversing camera aids in parking, though if you select the parking aid function, all you need to control is the throttle as the car steers itself perfectly into a space. Three drive modes, Eco, Comfort and Dynamic, are available and though while capable of barrelling along well in Dynamic mode, the S90 is more at home gliding silently along at the national limit in Comfort or Eco. At motorway speeds, the S90 is peerless. Mile after mile is devoured with considerable ease and if something strays into your path, the S90 will detect it and if necessary, bring it to a fast stop safely and quicker than you could do yourself. All in all, Volvo’s S90 T6 AWD provides buyers with sublime looking and feeling saloon that drives just as well as it looks.

WHAT? IT’S AN SW

SWM is the Italian motorcycle manufacturer you’ve probably never heard of. Back in the 1970s, SWM made off-road competition bikes with some success, including winning the Italian 125cc motocross championship.

Unfortunately, production ceased in 1978 and the brand lay dormant until its revival by Apelio Macchi in 2014. Macchi had been working with Husqvarna and, when BMW sold the Husqvarna brand to KTM, he had the realisation that an almost new motorcycle production facility was about to become available. He engineered a joint venture with Daxing Gong and, between them, SWM was reborn. The range of bikes now manufactured by SWM is headed by the 650 Superdual GT which, as its name implies, is an adventure style motorcycle with Givi hard luggage and at a very competitive $12,990 (plus ORC), is carving itself a nice little niche within the Kiwi motorcycle market and it’s LAMS (learner) approved to boot. To accompany these bikes is a trail style bike and a very sexy looking Motard, along with two smaller 440cc models; a retro style scrambler and a very well appointed café racer. For more info on the SWM range, call in and chat to Andy or Dan at First European.

Where for art thou

Launched this year, the first SUV for the charismatic and illustrious Italian brand has now received the same go-faster treatment as the Gulia executive saloon. Say ‘Ciao bella’ to the Stelvio Quadrifoglio. Grunt comes from a 2.9 litre Bi-Turbo V6, producing 510 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque. The Quadrifoglio also utilises Alfa’s Q4 all-wheel drive system with Active Torque Vectoring and an eight speed auto transmission, which in race mode, shifts gears in a mere 150 milliseconds. Add all this to a kerb weight of 1830kg and the Quadrifoglio will reach the national limit in 3.8 seconds and top out at 283km/h. Inside you get lashings of leather, carbon fibre and alcantara. It also features Alfa’s new 8.8-inch infotainment system, with Apple Car Play and Android Auto fitted as standard. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio also holds the record of ‘the fastest SUV’ around the notorious Nurburgring, recording a scorching lap time of 7 minutes 51 seconds. With prices yet to be confirmed, expect to see this hot high riding Italian on sale in New Zealand in 2018.
