PRICE, PRESENTATION, PROMOTION “Real estate is about more than houses. It’s actually about people,” says Cameron Bailey, Canterbury’s and New Zealand’s highest performing Harcourts sales consultant.

“B

uilding relationships with my clients, negotiating the very best price for them and seeing them move forward is what motivates me and keeps me focused.” The fact that Cameron is now selling properties for the sons and daughters of previous clients speaks volumes for the way he works closely with vendors and has their best interests at the fore. “Here at the Papanui Harcourts Gold people really matter. We’ve taken that key value beyond our Canterbury clients to help out the Treasure House Orphanage in Nadi, Fiji by donating $12,500. I was fortunate recently to spend some time with the children there. That experience gave me renewed energy and drive for the next few busy months.” Indeed the period from now until

Christmas is probably the busiest of the real estate calendar. “With properties looking their best this is the time people look to sell. That also means there are more buyers out there. But with an increased number of properties available, having an experienced, credible agent can make all the difference between simply selling and selling really well. “The ‘Three Ps’ are my mantra – my vendors and I want the best possible price. To get this we must present and promote a house to the best of our abilities. Engaging a large real estate company, such as Harcourts, with a network of agents, adds credibility to a sale and ensures maximum exposure and price.” Contact Cameron on 027 555 7079, 352 6166 or email cameron.bailey@harcourts.co.nz.

nergies is a comprehensive presentation of the multi-sensory art practices of two Australian creatives – artists, David Haines and Joyce Hinterding. Full of sensory stimulants, Energies will show from 26 November 2016 to 5 March 2017. Featuring collaborative projects and solo works by both artists, this the first major New Zealand survey show of the artists. Curated by the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia’s Anna Davis, the exhibition features large-scale, immersive virtual-3D environments for visitors to explore and navigate. Working in a synergistic partnership, the artists - who hail from the mystical Blue Mountains - are both educators at the University of Sydney and have been creating together for more than 15 years. low frequency radio waves, television signals, paranormal events, satellite transmissions and psychic forces – their mission is to illuminate these energies, visualising them in work that draws upon aspects of science, the occult and philosophy. Building on earlier game-based works, Haines’ and Hinterding’s latest work, Geology (2015), utilises computer-game technologies and a motion-detection system to create powerful and interactive simulations of the natural and supernatural world Geology was inspired by a research trip the artists made to Christchurch Art Gallery after the earthquakes of 2011. They describe it as an investigation of “how culture interacts with chaotic forces”. Projected at more than 11 metres wide in high (4K) resolution, Geology is an amplified, interactive, cinematic experience. Its imaginary terrain is multi-faceted with multiple levels open for adventure, each one taking the audience deeper underground to discover hidden arcane energies.

What does 19 months, 755 hand-illustrated pages and 236 litres of coffee add up to? One Grand ‘AddVenture’ that has culminated in a 200 page physical and digital book.

F

elicity Jane Powell, RE: Director of RE: Edit Publishing previously published nine different books for customers ranging from New York exchange students to Silicon Valley CEOs. In March 2015 she pitched an ambitious and eclectic idea at the Ministry of Awesome’s Coffee & Jam. It was called “Rebuild This City” - an interactive activity guide to Christchurch, designed to help residents and visitors creatively connect to Christchurch as it transitioned towards its new normal. Felicity spent nearly two years working towards making that book a reality, and now RE: Edit Publishing is thrilled to release AddVenture Christchurch tomorrow - the 21 October 2016 at XCHC. The launch is a celebration open to the patriots of Christchurch. “This is not the end of a journey, but just the beginning of what we hope will be many ‘AddVentures’ to come,” Felicity says. The launch provides an opportunity for a series of firsts – the first edition of course, but also the first opportunity to RE: Edit the book for its first large print run (what does this involve? coloured pens, post-its, and a healthy dose of humour!) The team involved will share their experiences from day dot onwards – specifically, what it’s been like starting an independent publishing company. During the evening, a few of the key figures in RE: Edit and AddVenture’s development - members of the community who made this project possible from day one – will take the stage to share their words of wisdom. What do you need to bring with you? Imagination, inspiration, your smartphone and your tablet if you’re interested in testing out the first beta version of AddVenture Christchurch in digital form. The event starts at 6pm and ends, at the latest, at 8pm. An exhibition of AddVenture materials and the RE:Edit portfolio will be available to experience, reedit, and re-discover all week until the 28 October. This will be a family-friendly occasion so feel free to bring along mini-adventurers, too.

oh

baby!

Winners of the Ballantynes Dragon’s Den style initiative ‘Back to the Boardroom’ Lianne de Jong and Lee Scheepers (Marlee + Jo) have mastered the art of mixing business and babies. They talk to Metropol about their recent coup – taking out top spot in the business challenge – and winning the right to have their book created and sold by Ballantynes in Christchurch and Timaru for one year. 1. Tell us about why you entered the competition We heard about the competition through quite a few friends of ours - all of them wanted us to enter and prompted us to do so because they believed in our product. We also love Ballantynes and felt The Baby Book would fit in perfectly with their exclusive image. 2. What inspired the creation of your product? When we became mums we found it really hard to find the perfect baby book to record our babies’ milestones. They were all lacking in style and content so we decided to create our own which goes from birth up to age five and even includes the first day of school. We both have a background in graphic design and fashion and we like staying on top of current trends. That’s why we chose to go with the stylish monochromatic theme to keep it gender neutral and we did the hand illustrations ourselves to make it unique. This allowed us to create the exact images we needed for each carefully thought out page.

We spent a lot of time finding the exact questions and information we wanted to include in order to document all the special moments of our own little ones based on our experience as mothers. We wanted to make sure there was enough space to add photos, artworks, invitations or other keepsakes so we added a lot of beautifully illustrated pages for this purpose, which also look fabulous if you choose to leave them blank. 3. How do you juggle motherhood with all the other demands on your time? Motherhood will always come first. Our children are still pre-school age and they are our biggest priority during this stage of life. That is why we would work at night when the kids are asleep. We meet at our local coffee shop, our “office”, to discuss, brainstorm and do planning. During the rest of the week we would work from home in the evenings or during the kids’ nap times during the day.

No one understands the value of a family home better than a family. It pays to shop around to compare all your options. Call us today.

4. What are you each most inspired by/what do you find motivating? Lianne: I am most inspired by my kids and children in general. Becoming a mother changed my perspective on life and what’s really important. When I look at my two beautiful girls, I’m inspired by their tolerance, innocence, optimism, honesty and courage. Very cliché, but children are our future which makes it my biggest motivation to raise two strong and loving individuals and make this world a little bit better. They make me want to improve myself all the time so I can be a great role model to them. Lee: I am inspired by successful women and mothers in business. I think it takes such strength and dedication to be able to juggle all the demands of children, home life and a career. My mother has always been an inspiration as she managed to be a solo parent to two very young children while at the same time excelling at her career. She always made us feel like the most important

Milestone Cards. They are all hand illustrated and gender neutral and have the same look and feel as the Baby Book. Currently we are working on the NICU Book which will be for babies who start out life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. These babies have different milestones, which a normal baby book will not cater for. We would love to be able to make it available to these families at no cost to them as they are going through such a stressful time as it is. We are currently looking into funding for this to make it possible. We also plan on creating a book for the school years, a mum and dad book, and many more. In the future we would like

A Collision of Vowels By Céline Gibson

Auckland artist, designer and typographer Catherine Griffiths has a fascination for letters - vowels in particular.

C

atherine doesn’t think of vowels solely in their visual form; for her, sound is just as important. Catherine refers to them as ‘Soundscapes’, which possibly explains why the giant glass panel confirmed for the entranceway to the new administration block - Te Kei - at Ara Institute of Canterbury is to be called Collidescape. “Because of Catherine’s long association with Ian Athfield Architects, she was a natural choice for us. Ara is extremely fortunate to have this work as part of our art collection,” says Julie Humby, Art Curator at Ara. Julie leafs through a folder containing images of vector dot patterns. “This is the design Catherine has created for us. The process is done in ceramic ink that’s

printed on the interior of the glazing.” Though a scaled down model of the final result, it makes a sizeable impression! “With night lighting, imagine how different it will look from day - that was very much a consideration when Catherine was designing this work.” Julie expounds on the function of the Te Kei building. “It will bring together the Executive team, Human Resources, Finance, Workforce Development, Marketing Services and the Project Management Office, which are currently in a number of buildings across the Madras Street campus. On 24 October, the event will showcase citizens of Christchurch (and beyond) and how they are using the resources around them to participate in our community. An inspiring start in life Medbury School is the only independent preparatory boys’ school in Christchurch, offering an education for both dayboys and boarders from years 1 to 8.

M

edbury offers a traditional education, encompassing the Medbury values of manners and respect. While the school places a high value on the boys’ literacy and numeracy skills, it also helps them to develop personal attributes, such as organisation, confidence, relationships with others and independence. Small classes and personalised learning programmes ensure that every boy has the support, extension and encouragement he needs to discover and develop his particular strengths. The learning programmes are all focused on a boy’s way of learning, providing them with a structured environment, which provides competition, boundaries and an opportunity to succeed.

Peter Kay, Headmaster of the school states quite categorically, “Our passion at Medbury is to unlock the potential of every boy. It is why we exist – to understand each boy’s opportunities and challenges, then personalise an education that brings out the very best he can be - ready for the next stage of his education and life with strong values to support him through the journey ahead. Boys leave Medbury with an education equipping them for life in the 21st Century. Friendships, values and a quiet selfconfidence that comes with sound preparation will provide an invaluable foundation for their journey ahead.” For further information please phone 351 6169 or visit www.medbury.school.nz

Sled dog unveiled:

HECTOR

THE HERO By Céline Gibson

Photo by Kim Westerskov Antartica New Zealand Pictorial Collection

It has taken four years of planning and steadfast belief in their project, but for the NZ Antarctic Society’s Canterbury Branch, and members of the Lyttelton Advisory Committee in particular, the unveiling ceremony of ‘Hector’ the Sled Dog near the (currently being refurbished) Lyttelton Library on Saturday 1 October was a triumphal reward for their labours.

S

ue Stubenvoll, project co-ordinator, has been a tireless advocate for Hector from the outset. “The purpose of this statue is to remind us what’s so great about where we live, our strong Antarctic links and the bravery of our forbears.

24 October 20, 2016 Metropol

If one child asks, “Why is this dog here? Why is it so important?”, then our work is done!” The Lyttelton Antarctic Advisory Committee selected local sculptor, Mark Whyte, and local author, Ben Brown, to create an Antarctic sled dog that would forever encourage our future explorers to ask those very questions. Ben Brown’s Dogs of the Vastness is a book that should be in every New Zealand home. It is exquisitely illustrated by Trish Bowles, and edited by Sue. Though the story is fiction, there are companion pages throughout of superb archival photographs and accounts of renowned Antarctic explorers and their teams of valiant dogs. To quote from the plaque that will go alongside ‘Hector’: The Sled Dog symbolises the courage, commitment and comradeship of all those involved in this continuing endeavour. es, it’s true; Christchurch has a long way to go. That said, look how far it has come. The metamorphosis of Christchurch’s architecture is palpable. In a state of progressive evolution, the Garden City’s architectural typology is nothing short of distinct. Marrying heritage and contemporary is no mean feat, but we are witnessing the rebirth of a cosmopolitan city that will be characterised by low rise buildings with personality. New building facades are playing with eye catching angles, colours and materials – a welcome digression from the archetypal concrete and stone buildings previously adopted in the city. The image accompany this story is of the new $51 million, four green star ECan building – an exemplary model of what is possible when ingenuity and innovation are the motivating driver. FESTA is celebrating this fact. Governed by a registered charity - the Christchurch Transitional Architecture Trust - the impending event is part of the year-round programme of Te Pūtahi - the Christchurch Centre for architecture and citymaking. the pace of a year progressing in leaps and bounds. It also presents an opportunity for retrospection, reflection and experiencing a reimagined city. The theme for this year’s festival is ‘We Have the Means’, which focuses on making the most of the resources available to us – in terms of our people (and their skills and knowledge) and reusable materials. The FESTA posse is focused on sustainability through the reuse of waste materials in design and creative urban regeneration. Architecture aficionados and even amateurs like myself can expect to enjoy spectacular imaginative architectural installations, workshops, talks, pop-up projects, family events, foraging tours, live performance, artworks and more. hrough its energy-efficient copiers, printers, IT service and software solutions Ricoh has helped its customers to be more sustainable in the office environment by reducing paper usage and minimising energy, toner and paper consumption. Being good citizens and caring for the environment becomes even more physical and “hands-on” with Ricoh Christchurch’s involvement in local community events. The team has formed an allegiance with Keep New Zealand Beautiful - the organisation that promotes the advantages of making and keeping our wonderful city clean, something that definitely fits with the Ricoh ethos. So on 17 September, Ricoh staff members volunteered for a “clean up” of New Brighton beach along with one of their clients - NZ Couriers.

“It was a real commitment by our staff,” says Duane Smithson, Christchurch branch manager.” Over three and a half hours, north and south of the New Brighton Pier, they gathered up refuse and materials for recycling. It was something of a family day out with the children of some staff helping out too and learning the importance of preserving our environment.” Ricoh is a CarboNZero certified company and offsets its carbon emissions through carbon credits and through practical activities - in Christchurch it is tree planting. On 1 May, in association with Trees for Canterbury, Ricoh staff planted hundreds of trees in the Styx Mill Reserve. “Tree planting will be an annual event for the company from now on. It is a way we can be practical Cantabrians and model the company’s values.”

Spring and summer is an opportune time to change up your tresses and give them some much-deserved TLC following a few months in hibernation.

W

e’re on the fringe for the coming seasons – and we’re going to be blunt about it. You don’t need to read too far between the lines to see what we’re getting at. Blunt bangs are on our radar in a big way and better still, they’re adorable paired with curls or a blown out ‘do and can take years off your look in an au naturel way. Like any hairstyle, there are definite pros and cons to consider before you decide whether bangs will make the cut for your warmer weather aesthetic. If you have textured hair, a blunt fringe can be hard to maintain, and a straightening iron needs to take pride of place in your bathroom. Avoid cowlicks by working through it with a brush and hairdryer. A thicker fringe works on thicker hair – seems obvious, but it’s important to consider the density of your hair before you lop any of it off into a fringe because fine hair could end up looking drab. Fringes can also do a fabulous job at framing your face, but talk to your stylist about what would work best for you.

ocal Christchurch fashion designer, Bianca Astle, who made a splash at NZ Fashion Week last September with her women’s fashion brand Ivy Blu, has a brand new childrenswear line. Proudly launched in May this year, Miss Ivy is dedicated to girls 3-14 years old. “I have a 5 year old daughter and I love buying clothes for her, but I’ve often been disappointed with the quality on offer,” Bianca says. Seeing the gap in the market, the Ivy Blu designer jumped at the chance to fill it. Because it is designed by Bianca here in Christchurch and made in New Zealand, it ensures a high quality control. “Before launching the brand, we consulted mums to find out what girls of this age liked and the most suitable styles for them,” Bianca explains. “This is something we’re constantly developing in relation to customer feedback.” Following the success of the first collection launched for winter, Miss Ivy’s summer collection is due out later this month. Bianca says customers can expect to see a range of cute styles that include printed shorts, casual cotton dresses, and pretty broderie anglaise tops and dresses, with a fresh summery colour palette of pastel pink, blue, and yellow, offset by crisp white and a punchy orange for a zesty splash. Miss Ivy is available at The Collective in The Colombo and online through ‘Miss Ivy’ on Facebook.

CLOTHING

As a business professional, maintaining a stylish working wardrobe that integrates seamlessly into the office culture can be time-consuming.

T

o banish this dilemma, Kiwi entrepreneurs Hannah Burnard and Robyn Pelvin recently launched Issue Clothing Company – an online capsule wardrobe concept that’s climbing the corporate ladder. The desire to fill that middle gap in the market between high fashion and casual clothing came from Robyn’s corporate background and Hannah’s retail experience including her time in the US, where online clothes shopping is a growing trend. “Women tend to have a whole lot of demands on their time so now they can effortlessly look polished, appropriate and confident at work – and save the fun fashion fix for leisure-time,” Robyn says. “Our ranges are all designed and made in New Zealand. You can choose just one item, or purchase the whole five-piece wardrobe of key pieces for each season, in generous-fitting sizes from 6 to 16. Fabrics are soft and wash-and-wear. The classic styling is not too suit-like, but made to flatter by

skimming the silhouette.” Robyn herself had found it hard finding comfortable, contemporary work-style clothes, such as a good white shirt, which the perfectionist patternmaker now creates from luxuriously thick Oxford cotton. “You can never have too many – they also look great with jeans.” The team is passionate about fabrics, which are selected in neutral palettes, for you to personalise with accessories. Special

OCCASIONS

The jubilant arrival of spring heralds the beginning of wedding season. Park Avenue Fashions is excited to see a range of beautiful new colour palettes in a variety of diverse styles and fabrics to make you feel a million dollars at your next special event.

S

pecialising in all types of special occasion wear, Park Avenue Fashions offers a substantial collection of dresses, evening gowns and formal outfits to suit a range of different occasions, from cruise ship attire through to the whole wedding party. As the biggest importer in the South Island, Park Avenue Fashions proudly offers the widest range of hats and fascinators to match every outfit. This summer chiffon is this season’s favoured fabric that achieves a soft, feminine look. While lace offers a more structured look, it is also proving very popular. Park Avenue Fashions Owner Sonia Caird says beaded embellishments on wedding and ball gowns and Race Day outfits are very much still a key feature. Sonia says popular hues arriving for spring and summer include captivating corals, serene sky blues, platinum and a range of pretty pastel pinks in a wide range of styles to flatter every woman’s

figure (from 6-24) and suit all personalities. Many of Park Avenue’s outfits are imported directly from Spain and therefore the store is now receiving many of the very latest styles and colours direct from the European summer. “We are also very selective about which styles and colours we order, often only having a limited edition of numbers in store, with many outfits and dresses being one-offs,” Sonia says. For your special occasion requirements pop into Park Avenue Fashions at 363 Lincoln Road in Addington (with car parking alongside the railway line) or peruse the selection of formal attire and accessories online at www.parkavenue.co.nz

The Australian-made brand has just released two new products – Ultra Dark Tanning Foam, for an extra dark airbrushed tan, and the Everyday Gradual Tanning Foam, for a nice, natural gradual tan. The range consists of lotions, foams, and dry oils, also offering light/ medium tones, to blend beautifully with pale skin tones, as well as dark to develop already olive or tanned skin. “This is definitely our best-selling tanning product,” says cosmetics counter manager Kendall Tompkins. “It produces a beautiful golden tan, rather than the bronze

It’s easy to apply with the streak-free mitt, you can shower an hour after application, and the colour lasts for between five and seven days. “It’s a really reasonable price too, and with between 8 and 10 applications per bottle, it’s really good value for money. People of all ages love it and our first lot of Ultra Dark Tanning Foam sold out within 24 hours.” The pharmacy is holding a ‘Get Gorgeous’ event, from 2-12 November, inviting customers to in-store events and a chance to try new colours, and learn beauty tips and tricks. Modern Boho Chic Google the words ‘bohemian fashion’ and you’ll be bombarded with images of lasses with flowing locks sporting crotchet ponchos, paisley prints, plenty of tassels and swinging tooled leather handbags. However, to achieve a modern take on boho style you needn’t look like you’ve just escaped from a hippie commune.

L

ook to the dictionary and a Bohemian is described as someone who is unconventional, nonconformist, unorthodox, offbeat, experimental and artistic. Keep these key principals at the forefront of your mind when putting together the ultimate boho chic outfit and you’re bound to hit the mark. Layering is a key ingredient in creating the boho look, but be wary of going overboard with too many layers, long lengths or swamping your figure with shapes that overwhelm. Nip baggy styles in with a belt, and if in doubt, take one thing off before walking out the door. The boho colour palette is firmly grounded by earthy hues and tends to be warm and rich. Think muddy browns, sandy creams, and olive greens. Use these colours as a foundation and build on them with metallic gold or brass, and add bold splashes of colour for interest. Inject one standout hue as an accent like fuchsia or scarlet. Boho style is influenced by all corners of the world, so consider adding some flavour to your outfit with some exotic ethnic elements. Look to nomadic cultures for the various types of colour, pattern, fabric, and decorative embellishments that could inject some character into your personal take on boho chic. Create your own unique personal style by adding treasured heirloom pieces of jewellery or other accessories. Either raid your mother’s or grandmother’s closet for inspired pieces or embark on an op shop mission where you’re destined to unearth some gems to complete your outfit. Dressing to reflect your personality or to simply express your mood is all about having fun, breaking the rules, and above all, being confident in the way you wear it. Create the look. Love it, wear it, own it.

Help us explore a potential way to protect your heart

New Zealand has one of the highest bowel cancer rates in the world.

The STRENGTH Trial is looking at an investigational medication for people who have high levels of triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood that can raise your risk of heart disease), low levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C; the ’good’ cholesterol), and other risk factors for heart disease. The investigational medication is a concentrate of omega-3 free fatty acids, developed from fish oils. Who can take part in this research study? You may be able to take part in the STRENGTH Trial if you: • are 18 years of age or older • take a statin medication but still have high triglyceride levels • have at least one risk factor for heart disease, such as: o a history of heart problems or stroke o type 1 or 2 diabetes o high blood pressure or taking a blood pressure medication o being a regular smoker. • Want to know more?

MODERN MEDICINE Christchurch Colorectal is the largest specialist colorectal surgical unit in the South Island. The facility serves over 2500 patients a year and its five surgeons – Richard Tapper, John Frye, Frank Frizelle, Tim Eglinton and Chris Wakeman - all have extensive experience in the management of colorectal and general surgical conditions.

“T

hese are often not easy issues to discuss or to admit suffering from,” say surgeons John Frye and Richard Tapper. “But with New Zealand having one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world, it is really important for people to put aside any squeamishness and be checked by a doctor if you notice any of the common symptoms or have any concerns at all - especially if there is a family history of bowel cancer.” Those common signs and symptoms may include changes in the normal pattern of going to the toilet that continue for several weeks (such as diarrhoea, constipation, or a feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely), blood in your bowel motion, tiredness and weight loss. “Bowel cancer is more common as you get older, particularly from the age of 50 and affects more men than women. People can make an appointment with us at Christchurch Colorectal and we can carry out a diagnostic colonoscopy. Bowel cancer can be more successfully treated, with a 90 percent chance of long-term survival if detected early. If there is a delay in diagnosis and the cancer is more advanced, it is harder to cure. So our advice is not to delay.” Apart from bowel cancer, Christchurch Colorectal specialises in a number of other colorectal health conditions. “For example we can help with the treatment of

a number of benign but troublesome anal conditions such as haemorrhoids, fissures and fistulas.” All of the surgeons at Christchurch Colorectal are members or fellows of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. They are all recognised by the NZ Conjoint Committee and the Gastroenterological Society of Australia as providing excellence in colonoscopy. In addition, Richard Tapper, Tim Eglinton and John Frye

perform general surgical operations such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy and hernia repair. “If you have concerning symptoms please contact our rooms and be assured that you will receive effective, safe and professional treatment from our team.” Christchurch Colorectal is based at Specialist Centre@21, Level 2, 21 Caledonian Road, St Albans - on the Southern Cross campus. These are new, modern rooms with easy access, including a lift and discreet covered and uncovered parking.

All of the surgeons at Christchurch Colorectal are members or fellows of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand.

ABOVE Cutting time and costs in half at the hairdressers, while still getting great service in a classy new salon, is now a reality in Rangiora.

T

he Cutting Room, launched this Spring, does away with washes and colouring to focus on the cut. The time you want a haircut is usually now – so there’s no appointments either. Welsh-born Jay Boswell always wanted her own salon so when opportunity knocked in the redeveloped historic 1868 building (previously Robbie’s Bistro), Jay and her husband, Alan, didn’t hesitate. With its original façade, black and white grandeur, high ceilings and chic contemporary interior, The Cutting Room occupies the first space when entering the new retail premises. “It was exciting watching it take shape. People say we look expensive, but we’re not!” she says. Jay and Alan have over two decades experience, and are joined by Sharon and Catherine. Together the chatty experts create a relaxed buzz. Polished concrete flooring, fresh minimalist décor, and edgy signage, complete the spacious salon.

If you need anything from a fringe or beard trim to a complete restyle – just pop in. The comfortable waiting area, if you indeed have to wait, showcase’s fabulous styling products from $20. “The men’s black gel which disguises those grays has been flying off the shelves,” Jay says. With a loyalty card, the 10th haircut is free. From $18 for men’s cuts and $24 for ladies, it’s affordable and convenient to bring the whole family in. Visit The Cutting Room at 112 High Street, Rangiora from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and Saturday 9am to 1pm.

Braided babe Eye-catching and intricate, there’s a braided hairstyle to match most dress designs, wedding styles and even hair types. Whether it’s an elaborate braided up-do with soft strands framing the face, or a simple single braid forming a hairband across the front of the head, braids can be the epitome of romantic. Why not try interweaving your plait with flowers or jewelled hair accessories because, when it comes to the trendy bridal hair 2016 styles, braids are one of the most versatile looks.

Shaggy boho First there was the au natural make up look, now letting your hair hang foot loose and fancy free for the big day is the next big thing. There are lots of variations on this look; add in a braid, pull some hair back, create some curls and, better yet, get your flower power on. So if you like the more natural look and you want to show off your long locks, this is the style for you. The best part? There’s no fuss and no serious styling.

3.

Messy up-do While the classic up-do is not only practical, it completes a delicate bridal look better than any other hairstyle type. But today’s up-dos don’t have to maintain the structure of the traditional look. Loose, relaxed and perhaps even a little messy is the way to do the up-do this year, with flowers such as the ever-popular baby’s breath completing the look.

FABRICS WITH

There are many reasons to visit Fabrics at Lincoln, from curtain making to Christmas shopping – or just for inspiration.

T

he growing giftware selection includes Le Forge homeware, advent dolls and a plethora of quirky cushions – or you can make your own if a particular fabric catches your eye. The layby service is also helpful. Owner Colleen Bennetts provides a curtain-making service with free measure and quotes and professional, creative advice. Q-card is accepted; offering 12 months interest-free credit - so there’s no need to save for stunning new curtains. Busy embellishing new builds with quality window coverings, Colleen says sheers look lovely on double tracks and are invaluable to help shield UV rays. Linen-look sheers are also in vogue. With an eye for detail, quality and design, she selects from a variety of New Zealand fabric houses. There’s everything from English patterns and stripes to retro and romantic designs. The fabulous staff can order fabrics if they are not in stock, and also supply and install tracks and roller blinds. Business is now in full swing, considering the business has only been open since January. “The response so far has been absolutely amazing. I’ve had wonderful support and comments from the Lincoln community,” Colleen says. Supporting the rural sector, and also accepting Farmlands Cards, the business has a stand at the AMP show, selling gifts, fabrics and cushions

– all with a rural theme. Look for the team near the entrance. Visit Fabrics at Lincoln, 3 Gerald Street, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 1.30pm. Phone 325 7400, email shop@fabricsatlincoln.nz or follow the business on Facebook.

a fusion of

FLAVOURS Exquisite fare, fine wine and cocktails in a beautiful, relaxed environment, is what you will find at The Monday Room – any day of the week.

W

ell known for specialising in all things delicious, especially their magnificent desserts, The Monday Room has been reborn. Under the direction of new owner Joel Christian, the establishment has transformed from a late-night party venue to an awardwinning, romantic dining space. “We are never in a rush to push people out the door, instead we encourage our guests to sink in to a comfortable booth and enjoy our hospitality.” With a focus on seasonal, locallysourced produce, head chef Hannah Cooper-Grieve has created four sumptous menus- weekday lunch, weekend brunch, dinner, and dessert. The vegetarian and vegan-friendly menus also feature some of the most exceptional dishes in Christchurch. The Melbourne-inspired brunch and lunch menu’s extensive range of options include the slow braised, pulled Merino lamb brioche sandwich

with smoked mozzarella, cherry relish, and watercress. For those more inclined towards a sweet delight, the Nuttellastuffed French toast, with toffee-poached pear, marscapone, hazelnuts and real maple syrup is a must have! The dinner menu consists of three plate sizes, with traditional entrees, followed by a selection of vegetable driven medium plates, and protein focussed large plates. Evenings at the Monday Room are focussed on social-dining, with guests encouraged to order a selection of dishes to share from the middle of the table, akin to traditional family dinner. Flavour and texture combinations such as the confit dutch carrots, roasted cauliflower in tallegio mornay, and kwark gnocci on cultivated fungi with crispy sage, parmesan wafer, and brown butter, are sure to satiate even the most particular pallate. Dessert aficionados will be inspired by the selection of high-end sweet treats, including passionfruit crème brulee tart with Stolen rum roasted pineapple, blueberry mousse with liquorice meringue and cinnamon crumb, or the vegan snickers bar with coconut and peanut. From 10:30am weekdays, and 9am on weekends, The Monday Room is your place to enjoy brunch, dessert, and everything in-between.

Homemade Bresaola – Villas Style riginating from the Lombardy region of the Italian Alps, Bresaola is a delicious air-dried, cured meat, generally made with topside or other premium leg meat. The process of curing and drying Bresaola is simple to try at home make sure your beef cut is trimmed well. You will need: Butcher’s string, Muslin/ cheesecloth, freezer bags.

Ingredients

For those scratching their heads at the title – specifically, the word ‘turmeric’ – you’re not alone. We’ve only just cottoned onto this new trend ourselves.

I

t seems turmeric is giving coffee a run for its money and has taken over as ‘the’ fashionable beverage for the coming season. Turmeric lattes are winning affection all over the culinary show. So what, exactly, is this popular spice? Well, it’s more than just a pretty face, its earned street cred’ as one of the most powerful herbs on the planet, rubbing shoulders with the likes of garlic, ginseng, ginger and cinnamon. It is considered equivalent to many pharmaceutical medications and is revered for its anti-inflammatory effects as well as being a strong antioxidant. Try it yourself – go in search of a turmeric latte and ride the healthy wave.

• 500g – 1kg piece of topside beef, eye round or loin piece • 1 cup red wine • 100g coarse sea salt • 100g sugar • 20g fresh or dried rosemary, chopped • 5g black peppercorns • 2.5g curing salt per kilo of meat (ask your local butcher)

Method Ensure that your meat is well trimmed of all fat and sinew Weigh the meat (essential for knowing when your bresaola is ready) Put meat in freezer bag and add red wine. Remove air, seal and refrigerate overnight Combine all cure ingredients, crush and grind in mortar & pestle. Remove refrigerated meat from bag, pat dry and add half of the

facebook.com/Coffeehouse290 cure mixture to the dry meat in a clean freezer bag. Press out air and seal. Turn meat once a day. After one week, empty any liquid from bag, add the second half of cure mixture, reseal and refrigerate for one more week. Turn meat daily. Now you are ready to wrap and hang your meat – head to The Villas Facebook page for the next steps to create your own delicious bresaola. In the meantime, experience The Villas lunch and dinner version.

⅔ fl cup Port, A Ramos Pinto 2005 Late Bottled Vintage* ¾ cup Vermouth, A Cocchi Vermouth Di Torino* ¼ fl cup Li Hing Mui Juice 1 Tbsp Pure Vanilla Extract About 10 dried prunes, cut in half

24 cherry tomatoes 12 pieces goat cheese, rolled into balls ½ cup macadamia nuts, lightly toasted 2 cups mixed baby lettuce 2 vanilla pods, split lengthwise, halved *The two alcohols have a lot of vanilla nuances in them so that’s why they are specific. If you can’t get these, ask your local bottle shop for recommendations.

L

i hing mui is a very popular snack in Hawaii. When growing up, I ate them like potato chips. There are leis made up of strung-together packages of li hing mui that people give as gifts. Li hing mui, called “crack seed” here on the islands, are dried preserved plums and are Chinese in origin. Found in Asian grocer shops, they can be sweet, salty, sour, wet or dried. Other

fruit, including lemons, mangoes and other stone fruit, are also given the li hing mui treatment. The nuances are all about the balance of sweet/salty/sour, with so many variations they are never consistently the same taste. This salad uses a dessert port, a dessert vermouth, and seductive vanilla. Alan Wong for Vanilla Table by Natasha MacAller

Add 1 ¼ fl cups/300ml water to all the ingredients, bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Cool, strain and then add to the dressing.

Heat the port and vermouth in a small saucepan. Let boil 5 minutes to burn off the alcohol, then remove from heat and decant to a bowl. Add the li hing mui juice, vanilla and prunes, whisking well. Set aside.

Strain the dressing, discarding prunes. Place dressing on the bottom of a bowl. Arrange the mixed baby lettuce, tomatoes, goat cheese balls and lightly toasted macadamia nuts on top, garnish with the vanilla pods.

WHITE EXTERIORS INTERIORS BUILDING OUTDOORS KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

Come spring and summer, the aesthetic for the ultimate outdoor area is all about white.

F

resh, crisp and clean, white is the perfect companion to wicker and wood and will make outdoor living more sophisticated and stylish than ever before. The best part is that an investment in white furniture means you can furnish with confidence knowing these legacy pieces will stand the test of time. The thought of white may be tantalizing but has often carried a ‘proceed with caution’ label given that it has an increased susceptibility to dirt. Allay those fears though with a number of practical hacks including removing mold and mildew

by applying a solution of one part chlorine bleach with four parts of water. Patience is key – ensure you wait at least 10-15 minutes before rinsing and then let the sun work its magic to dry out your handy work. In the spirit of a ‘white out’ (seemingly ironic!), we’ve pulled together a collection of some of our favourite looks for the longer, balmier days. We’re feeling particularly generous, so you’ll also be able to spy some stunning flora over on page 75 of today’s issue that will make your outdoor area the envy of all your visitors.

Prioritising sustainability and innovation Award-winning company Weir Architecture is at the forefront of innovative, sustainable and bespoke design. “Each client receives a design individually tailored to their unique requirements and wishes,” says director, Robert Weir. “Every site is also carefully assessed to ensure the best position for outdoor areas and maximise North West aspects, capturing optimum sun and the best views.”

S

pecialising in hill home design, the company works alongside tradespeople and interior designers to provide a complete package. The ability to listen carefully to what the client wants is a key point of difference, Robert says. “Working closely with our clients to fully understand their requirements is crucial. It’s also about examining how they live in the house, functionality and flow. Texture,

colour and materials are important and we involve a landscape architect in our projects at an early stage to ensure the outdoor areas are also perfectly interconnected with the home.” As founding members of the NZ Green Building Council, the company has a strong belief in sustainability. “We are mindful of minimising environmental impact and ensuring thermally efficient

design, to keep power and energy usage to a bare minimum, while providing warmth and comfort for the homeowner.” Robert has over 30 years of experience in architectural design. His own home, built of textured pre-cast concrete, also won the company a prestigious national award for best home (over 300 square metres category). From designing contemporary architectural homes, to extensive commercial developments, Weir Architecture provides a user-friendly, solution-based service and upholds a strong reputation for excellence. ULTRA-LOW EMISSION BURNING FIRES 20 years of satisfied customers and a vested interest in pioneering “Ultra Low Emission Burning” pellet and wood fires in Canterbury says a lot about Heatstore’s commitment to supplying, installing and servicing ECAN Clean Air approved fires in Christchurch homes.

A

s urban clean air regulations have proven to be a moving target and are in fact still evolving, it’s definitely been an exciting and challenging ride for manufacturers, importers and retailers to keep up.

However, “keep up” the business must, as few people dispute the obvious health benefits of clean air. Home owners also need to understand the importance of embracing the latest ULEB wood fire technology as these new fires are the way forward.

These new “down draft” log and ULEB pellet fires can be installed in any home anywhere in Christchurch without restriction. Fires are primal which clearly indicates that homeowners value the comfort and romance of real flame. Sales and interest in these fires over the past twelve months have far exceeded expectation. Heatstore has five working ULEB fires on display in its showroom representing Ravelli, Rika and Enviro pellet fires and Bionic, Masport & Woodsman/Ferva log fires to enable customers to compare and experience different options. New home building in suburban and especially inner city Christchurch is flourishing with renewed energy and vitality. Heatstore is proud to have recently supplied and installed Danish “Bionic” log fires into architecturally designed town houses in the inner city. Visit Heatstore’s modern showroom to view the latest options available. It employs NZHHA registered installers and technicians who take genuine pride in their workmanship, attention to detail and provide full after sale service for the life of your fire. THE WAY

Tiling

Over the past twenty years the way in which we use tiles has changed dramatically. They are bigger and bolder than ever before in terms of our approach to tile design and manufacturing, and how we can use them in the most unconventional ways to stunning effect.

I

n the world of flooring and hard surfaces, tiles are noncombustible and durable. Easy to clean and hygienic, they are an ideal choice for floors and walls, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. An abundance of choice, can quickly become overwhelming. As a result, many end up choosing the wrong tile for their desired

Middle of the Road While dark colours, even tiles used in a larger format, can make a space appear smaller, they also show the dirt more, as do really light coloured tiles. If you want to avoid cleaning more than you have to, then opting for shades that are somewhere in between light and dark, or choosing something with a pattern, can hide a multitude of sins. A middle of the road tile also means you can choose an accent colour in the way of towels, vases, lightshades etc. Moreover, you can change accents as your tastes change.

3.

outcome or intended effect, or simply avoid the task altogether. For Christchurch designers, architects, renovation specialists, and homeowners, there is a new experience on offer that dispels any mystery. Opening in February this year MO Tiles offers excellent advice for making the best choice for your needs, alongside a complete design service. With this in mind, the team has created an everevolving showroom highlighting an impressive selection of the ranges available that makes for a truly enjoyable shopping experience. With constantly evolving trends within the industry, MO Tiles co-owner, Amy Odering, offers some invaluable advice with three top tips to help you create a magazine worthy statement in your own home.

2.

1.

Optical Illusions If you have a small bathroom, one of the easiest ways to achieve the illusion of more space is by using bigger tiles. Although this may seem counter intuitive because larger tiles require fewer grout lines, it actually makes a room feel a lot bigger than it really is.

Choose the same tile for the floor and walls Most of us don’t have the luxury of a massive bathroom, so any bright ideas to let the light in and open it up is always welcome. In addition to using larger formats, using the same tiles for both the floors and walls

achieves similar results. By taking the shower tiles all the way up to the ceiling, it makes the room appear more spacious and less boxed in. Don’t be shy to incorporate a statement wall for dramatic impact, but be aware of the colour, style and texture as it needs to complement the surrounding elements.

W

hile your choice of tiles are practically limitless, having reliable, professional advice to guide you through the process, from product choice through to design and completion with guaranteed quality workmanship, is vital. Developed with a solid commitment to being the best by presenting brands with a legacy of quality and service, MO Tiles strives to deliver on all fronts and exceed all expectations. Colour Confidence Dark hues can have such an impact and create a sense of drama yet at the same time give a very calm and cocooning feeling.

In his new book, In the Mood for Colour, Hans Blomquist offers a swag of ideas and inspired illustrated suggestions for imaginative ways to inject colour into your home.

W

hile dark and moody colours can be hard to digest for some and loved by others, many people may long to try them but don’t dare. Dark hues can have such an impact and create a sense of drama yet at the same time give a very calm and cocooning feeling. Choose from the deepest indigo, inky black, thunder grey and earthy brown shades. Variations on these colours will work well with any style of architecture and decor, whether your home is super-modern or more traditional. If you don’t want an all-dark interior, you can still create drama by using contrasting colours. Placing dark pieces of furniture and textiles against a lighter backdrop can be just as effective and arresting as when the walls are dark too, as the objects will be thrown into relief.

While white may be the first choice for many when it comes to choosing colours for their home, it can feel a little boring and safe. To create a successful pale interior, it is important to work with layers of different textures and the lighter shades of various pigments, and to add vintage surfaces into the mix. Creating a textural mix in an all-white room will give it more depth and interest, as the different materials bring an extra dimension to an otherwise plain look. There is nothing wrong with plain, but if you want to add something extra, items with a rich patina will help you create a multilayered effect. Introducing some elements of natural wood will bring warmth and texture to a scheme that may otherwise seem stark. Soften interiors by adding a few vintage pieces, as an all-new, shiny interior can lack soul and personality. A key element to add to any interior is something green. If you look at a room and feel that something is missing, but you can’t put your finger on it, try introducing some greenery. It can be a single leaf, a potted plant or a few stems of wild flowers in a simple glass jar.

This edited excerpt comes from In the mood for colour by Hans Blomquist with photography by Debi Treloar and Hans Blomquist, published by Ryland Peters & Small, and distributed by Bookreps NZ.

PERFORMANCE

UNDER PRESSURE

LYNETTE MCFADDEN GOLD BUSINESS OWNER, HARCOURTS AND WELL KNOWN BUSINESSWOMAN

I recently attended a business seminar in Auckland themed around the challenges of performing under pressure. Although I’m not able to share the specific material put forward by the presenters, I am going to recount some of my most significant observations and the takehome tips that evolved from these. The seminar/summit was a collaboration between the Auckland Chamber of Commerce and the New Zealand Athletes Federation. The presenters were internationally recognized elite New Zealand athletes, all of whom were household names and singularly capable of causing a social media storm just by entering the building. This talented group shared their individual stories involving not only their outstanding successes but their soul-destroying failures, and in doing so provided the business attendees with strategies they could apply to their own professional lives. Business and sport share some commonalities. Success in either field requires a toolbox of strategies, specific disciplined behaviors, a strong mental psyche and a healthy dose of curiosity.

Performing under pressure as an athlete, as for anyone in business, is far from easy. The stakes are high and in my own industry they involve people’s biggest asset – their home – and engage their biggest emotional triggers around how they feel about it. This means business relationships that can see you teeter on the cusp of being a lifelong friend or being someone that the client never wants to work with again. The pressure comes from:

• The need to deliver, especially around price, and always around the processes or activities involved to achieve it. At times like listing, auction day, presenting offers or negotiating difficult terms, pressure is always a constant.

• The need to read and anticipate the market at any given time, just as the sportspeople presenting to us had to read the climate, their competitors and their level of fitness to undertake the job. I always do a simple and personal audit every morning to check my own level of ‘match fitness’ to lead our team. • The need to constantly make improvements. Training, be it in sport or

List with Harcourts in Canterbury and you could . . . ING 7 AMAZTIONS A DESTIN S TO 7 TRIP N! BE WO

real estate, is a prerequisite for success and although the basics should always be attended to brilliantly, so to should new methodology be explored. High stakes require high levels of skill and commitment, and although no one at the seminar could count winning a gold medal or a Rugby World Cup among their own achievements (unlike our presenters), we could all dream about – and hope to emulate to a tiny degree – what it takes to perform under pressure and come out on top. So, there you go. As easy as it is to dismiss pressure as a New Age, First World concern, without it even the hope of performing well won’t ignite. Just imagine if Richie as a lad in Kurow, Valerie growing up in South Auckland, Hamish Carter and Mahé Drysdale hadn’t thought to confront pressure. As one of them said on the day, if I had known some of the right strategies earlier, I would have doubled my medals. Get your head around what your own pressure thresholds are and work in a space that lets you be your own champion.

DESIGNER PHILANTHROPY The Sealy Designer Bed campaign is at the forefront of helping to combat breast cancer.

Cancer – breast cancer in particular – profoundly affects thousands of people in New Zealand every year. The Sealy Designer Bed campaign is at the forefront of helping to combat breast cancer, creating effective dialogue around the subject, raising awareness and most importantly helping to generate funds that can be invested into vital research.

ach year the brand partners with much-loved Kiwi personalities, giving them a once in a lifetime opportunity to create fabric artwork for a Sealy Posturepedic Exquisite bed. Imaginative, inspiring and innovative, the designs add a new dimension to the expression ‘beauty sleep’.

This year, treasured New Zealand broadcaster Stacey Morrison was one of the chosen four alongside cook and dietitian Nadia Lim, Silver Fern Maria Tutaia and image consultant Lorraine Downes. Stacey’s story is particularly poignant as her mother passed away at 45 from the disease. “The older you get the more you

realise how young she was. The grief gets easier but when I see how much she has missed out on… that is the tragedy… not knowing her grandchildren. “When Sealy came to me I thought it was amazing. I like the idea of mindfulness before sleep – feeling connected and safe. My design was inspired by whanau living, retro caravans, nostalgia, the arts and vintage. I wanted it to be in keeping with the colours of a Kiwi summer.” Stacey’s husband wrote the incantation around the bed base and it’s a saying they repeat to their children every night and translates to - ‘The sky is calm, the earth is at peace, the whole world is tranquil. Peaceful sleep descends, rest in the knowledge you are surrounded by deep affection, love and serenity. Rest now, rest well, rest is yours’. The four, one-off Exquisite beds will be listed on TradeMe between 17 and 31 October, with the entire proceeds donated to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

Some truly wonderful grand old architecture is being offered here in Christchurch “as is where is” for a fracon of its original value. Perfectly habitable, this has been lived in connuously since the earthquakes, the house is deemed repairable, but the current owners have chosen otherwise and have just completed their ‘new build’ nearby. Vast spaces, 370sqm in total, a striking modern kitchen extension designed by Kerry Mason and all set on about 1200sqm. The site itself on the north side of one of our most enduringly popular streets may well hold appeal for those wishing to create new in the future. This ‘Grand Old Lady’ is being offered “As is Where is” and uninsured.

And it’s very good news for those families searching the current marketplace. Our seller is based in the 'Big Apple' now and no longer has the need for a Christchurch home. Refurbished post-earthquake by previous owners, this is a very fine example of a beaufully modernized gentleman's residence so characterisc of this era. Light and bright inside there is a fabulous kitchen which opens to decking and outdoor living. In fact all décor is stylish and tasteful. A newly constructed double garage may be the piece de resistance for some. Carpeted and with its own heat pump it could be an extra living space. Above this is a studio...again many possibilies suggest themselves.
