ith Canterbury Fashion Week next week, and our latest cover a fashionable nod to what we can expect from this year's show, I've been thinking quite a lot about the subject. Energy has seemingly talismanic qualities. Abstract and intangible energy – the unseen kind – is the focus of an upcoming Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu exhibition.
E
nergies is a comprehensive presentation of the multi-sensory art practices of two Australian creatives – artists, David Haines and Joyce Hinterding. Full of sensory stimulants, Energies will show from 26 November 2016 to 5 March 2017. Featuring collaborative projects and solo works by both artists, this the first major New Zealand survey show of the artists. Curated by the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia’s Anna Davis, the exhibition features large-scale, immersive virtual-3D environments for visitors to explore and navigate. Working in a synergistic partnership, the artists - who hail from the mystical Blue Mountains - are both educators at the University of Sydney and have been creating together for more than 15 years. Inspired by unseen energies that surround us – including very

low frequency radio waves, television signals, paranormal events, satellite transmissions and psychic forces – their mission is to illuminate these energies, visualising them in work that draws upon aspects of science, the occult and philosophy. Building on earlier game-based works, Haines’ and Hinterding’s latest work, Geology (2015), utilises computer-game technologies and a motion-detection system to create powerful and interactive simulations of the natural and supernatural world Geology was inspired by a research trip the artists made to Christchurch Art Gallery after the earthquakes of 2011. They describe it as an investigation of “how culture interacts with chaotic forces”. Projected at more than 11 metres wide in high (4K) resolution, Geology is an amplified, interactive, cinematic experience. Its imaginary terrain is multi-faceted with multiple levels open for adventure, each one taking the audience deeper underground to discover hidden arcane energies.

elicity Jane Powell, RE: Director of RE: Edit Publishing previously published nine different books for customers ranging from New York exchange students to Silicon Valley CEOs. In March 2015 she pitched an ambitious and eclectic idea at the Ministry of Awesome’s Coffee & Jam. It was called “Rebuild This City” - an interactive activity guide to Christchurch, designed to help residents and visitors creatively connect to Christchurch as it transitioned towards its new normal. Felicity spent nearly two years working towards making that book a reality, and now RE: Edit Publishing is thrilled to release AddVenture Christchurch tomorrow - the 21 October 2016 at XCHC. The launch is a celebration open to the patriots of Christchurch. “This is not the end of a journey, but just the beginning of what we hope will be many ‘AddVentures’ to come,” Felicity says. The launch provides an opportunity for a series of firsts – the first edition of course, but also the first opportunity to RE: Edit the book for its first large print run (what does this involve? coloured pens, post-its, and a healthy dose of humour!) The team involved will share their experiences from day dot onwards – specifically, what it’s been like starting an independent publishing company. During the evening, a few of the key figures in RE: Edit and AddVenture’s development - members of the community who made this project possible from day one – will take the stage to share their words of wisdom. What do you need to bring with you? Imagination, inspiration, your smartphone and your tablet if you’re interested in testing out the first beta version of AddVenture Christchurch in digital form. The event starts at 6pm and ends, at the latest, at 8pm. An exhibition of AddVenture materials and the RE:Edit portfolio will be available to experience, reedit, and re-discover all week until the 28 October. This will be a family-friendly occasion so feel free to bring along mini-adventurers, too.

Winners of the Ballantynes Dragon’s Den style initiative ‘Back to the Boardroom’ Lianne de Jong and Lee Scheepers (Marlee + Jo) have mastered the art of mixing business and babies. They talk to Metropol about their recent coup – taking out top spot in the business challenge – and winning the right to have their book created and sold by Ballantynes in Christchurch and Timaru for one year. 1. Tell us about why you entered the competition We heard about the competition through quite a few friends of ours - all of them wanted us to enter and prompted us to do so because they believed in our product. We also love Ballantynes and felt The Baby Book would fit in perfectly with their exclusive image. 2. What inspired the creation of your product? When we became mums we found it really hard to find the perfect baby book to record our babies’ milestones. They were all lacking in style and content so we decided to create our own which goes from birth up to age five and even includes the first day of school. We both have a background in graphic design and fashion and we like staying on top of current trends. That’s why we chose to go with the stylish monochromatic theme to keep it gender neutral and we did the hand illustrations ourselves to make it unique. This allowed us to create the exact images we needed for each carefully thought out page.
We spent a lot of time finding the exact questions and information we wanted to include in order to document all the special moments of our own little ones based on our experience as mothers. We wanted to make sure there was enough space to add photos, artworks, invitations or other keepsakes so we added a lot of beautifully illustrated pages for this purpose, which also look fabulous if you choose to leave them blank. 3. How do you juggle motherhood with all the other demands on your time? Motherhood will always come first. Our children are still pre-school age and they are our biggest priority during this stage of life. That is why we would work at night when the kids are asleep. We meet at our local coffee shop, our “office”, to discuss, brainstorm and do planning. 4. What are you each most inspired by/what do you find motivating? Lianne: I am most inspired by my kids and children in general. Becoming a mother changed my perspective on life and what’s really important. When I look at my two beautiful girls, I’m inspired by their tolerance, innocence, optimism, honesty and courage. Very cliché, but children are our future which makes it my biggest motivation to raise two strong and loving individuals and make this world a little bit better. They make me want to improve myself all the time so I can be a great role model to them. Lee: I am inspired by successful women and mothers in business. I think it takes such strength and dedication to be able to juggle all the demands of children, home life and a career. My mother has always been an inspiration as she managed to be a solo parent to two very young children while at the same time excelling at her career. She always made us feel like the most important

A Collision of Vowels By Céline Gibson
Auckland artist, designer and typographer Catherine Griffiths has a fascination for letters - vowels in particular.
C
atherine doesn’t think of vowels solely in their visual form; for her, sound is just as important. Catherine refers to them as ‘Soundscapes’, which possibly explains why the giant glass panel confirmed for the entranceway to the new administration block - Te Kei - at Ara Institute of Canterbury is to be called Collidescape. “Because of Catherine’s long association with Ian Athfield Architects, she was a natural choice for us. Ara is extremely fortunate to have this work as part of our art collection,” says Julie Humby, Art Curator at Ara. Julie leafs through a folder containing images of vector dot patterns. “This is the design Catherine has created for us. The process is done in ceramic ink that’s

printed on the interior of the glazing.” Though a scaled down model of the final result, it makes a sizeable impression! “With night lighting, imagine how different it will look from day - that was very much a consideration when Catherine was designing this work.” Julie expounds on the function of the Te Kei building. “It will bring together the Executive team, Human Resources, Finance, Workforce Development, Marketing Services and the Project Management Office, which are currently in a number of buildings across the Madras Street campus. This will then enable the Rakaia Centre to be refurbished as a student hub.” Te Kei construction has commenced with completion estimated mid 2017.

It has taken four years of planning and steadfast belief in their project, but for the NZ Antarctic Society’s Canterbury Branch, and members of the Lyttelton Advisory Committee in particular, the unveiling ceremony of ‘Hector’ the Sled Dog near the (currently being refurbished) Lyttelton Library on Saturday 1 October was a triumphal reward for their labours.

ue Stubenvoll, project co-ordinator, has been a tireless advocate for Hector from the outset. “The purpose of this statue is to remind us what’s so great about where we live, our strong Antarctic links and the bravery of our forbears.

Why is it so important?”, then our work is done!” The Lyttelton Antarctic Advisory Committee selected local sculptor, Mark Whyte, and local author, Ben Brown, to create an Antarctic sled dog that would forever encourage our future explorers to ask those very questions. Ben Brown’s Dogs of the Vastness is a book that should be in every New Zealand home. It is exquisitely illustrated by Trish Bowles, and edited by Sue. Though the story is fiction, there are companion pages throughout of superb archival photographs and accounts of renowned Antarctic explorers and their teams of valiant dogs. To quote from the plaque that will go alongside ‘Hector’: The Sled Dog symbolises the courage, commitment and comradeship of all those involved in this continuing endeavour. iona has been spending most of the Winter months teaching violin and also writing music, some of which will be included in this concert. This will range from a piece dedicated to her father, Jim’s Gypsy Groove; two moody and vibrant tango numbers, Dark Dreaming and Torango; and a classical-jazz number, Behind the Hills, during which you can imagine yourself on the Port Hills on a dark night. Spring and summer is an opportune time to change up your tresses and give them some much-deserved TLC following a few months in hibernation.

e’re on the fringe for the coming seasons – and we’re going to be blunt about it. You don’t need to read too far between the lines to see what we’re getting at. Blunt bangs are on our radar in a big way and better still, they’re adorable paired with curls or a blown out ‘do and can take years off your look in an au naturel way. Like any hairstyle, there are definite pros and cons to consider before you decide whether bangs will make the cut for your warmer weather aesthetic. If you have textured hair, a blunt fringe can be hard to maintain, and a straightening iron needs to take pride of place in your bathroom. Avoid cowlicks by working through it with a brush and hairdryer. A thicker fringe works on thicker hair – seems obvious, but it’s important to consider the density of your hair before you lop any of it off into a fringe because fine hair could end up looking drab. Fringes can also do a fabulous job at framing your face, but talk to your stylist about what would work best for you.

ocal Christchurch fashion designer, Bianca Astle, who made a splash at NZ Fashion Week last September with her women’s fashion brand Ivy Blu, has a brand new childrenswear line. Proudly launched in May this year, Miss Ivy is dedicated to girls 3-14 years old. “I have a 5 year old daughter and I love buying clothes for her, but I’ve often been disappointed with the quality on offer,” Bianca says. Seeing the gap in the market, the Ivy Blu designer jumped at the chance to fill it. Because it is designed by Bianca here in Christchurch and made in New Zealand, it ensures a high quality control. “Before launching the brand, we consulted mums to find out what girls of this age liked and the most suitable styles for them,” Bianca explains. “This is something we’re constantly developing in relation to customer feedback.” Following the success of the first collection launched for winter, Miss Ivy’s summer collection is due out later this month. Bianca says customers can expect to see a range of cute styles that include printed shorts, casual cotton dresses, and pretty broderie anglaise tops and dresses, with a fresh summery colour palette of pastel pink, blue, and yellow, offset by crisp white and a punchy orange for a zesty splash. hese are often not easy issues to discuss or to admit suffering from,” say surgeons John Frye and Richard Tapper. “But with New Zealand having one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world, it is really important for people to put aside any squeamishness and be checked by a doctor if you notice any of the common symptoms or have any concerns at all - especially if there is a family history of bowel cancer.” Those common signs and symptoms may include changes in the normal pattern of going to the toilet that continue for several weeks (such as diarrhoea, constipation, or a feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely), blood in your bowel motion, tiredness and weight loss. “Bowel cancer is more common as you get older, particularly from the age of 50 and affects more men than women. People can make an appointment with us at Christchurch Colorectal and we can carry out a diagnostic colonoscopy. Bowel cancer can be more successfully treated, with a 90 percent chance of long-term survival if detected early. If there is a delay in diagnosis and the cancer is more advanced, it is harder to cure. So our advice is not to delay.” Apart from bowel cancer, Christchurch Colorectal specialises in a number of other colorectal health conditions. “For example we can help with the treatment of
a number of benign but troublesome anal conditions such as haemorrhoids, fissures and fistulas.” All of the surgeons at Christchurch Colorectal are members or fellows of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. They are all recognised by the NZ Conjoint Committee and the Gastroenterological Society of Australia as providing excellence in colonoscopy. In addition, Richard Tapper, Tim Eglinton and John Frye

Ingredients 1¾ cup semi-sweet chocolate (60%), finely chopped 1 Tbsp pure Mexican vanilla extract ½ tsp coffee extract 1 Tbsp runny honey 5 egg whites, large, at room temperature ½ tsp cream of tartar 1 Tbsp super fine sugar ¼ tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp chipotle or smoked chilli powder
To Serve 240 ml vanilla whipped cream 1-2 Tbsp cocoa nibs 1 vanilla pod

elt chocolate in microwave or over double-boiler, gently stirring with a rubber spatula until smooth and silky. Be careful not to overheat chocolate. When just melted and smooth, set aside on counter until just warm. Gently stir in vanilla, coffee extract, honey and a pinch of sea salt. Set aside. In a clean, dry stand-mixer or large stainless bowl, whip egg
whites on low speed until frothy. Sprinkle in cream of tartar and whip on medium-high for 2 minutes. Sprinkle in sugar and continue to whip until whites are thick, glossy, medium-stiff peaks. Turn to low speed and sprinkle in cinnamon and chilli powder, mixing to combine. Fold 2 large spoonfuls of whites into chocolate, then fold chocolate in 3 stages back into whites until incorporated.
To Serve Spoon mousse into serving glasses, cover and chill until ready to serve. Top each with a dollop of vanilla-scented whipped cream, a sprinkling of cocoa nibs and a sliver of vanilla pod.

The process of curing and drying Bresaola is simple to try at home make sure your beef cut is trimmed well. You will need: Butcher’s string, Muslin/ cheesecloth, freezer bags.

For those scratching their heads at the title – specifically, the word ‘turmeric’ – you’re not alone. We’ve only just cottoned onto this new trend ourselves.
I
t seems turmeric is giving coffee a run for its money and has taken over as ‘the’ fashionable beverage for the coming season. Turmeric lattes are winning affection all over the culinary show. So what, exactly, is this popular spice? Well, it’s more than just a pretty face, its earned street cred’ as one of the most powerful herbs on the planet, rubbing shoulders with the likes of garlic, ginseng, ginger and cinnamon. It is considered equivalent to many pharmaceutical medications and is revered for its anti-inflammatory effects as well as being a strong antioxidant. Try it yourself – go in search of a turmeric latte and ride the healthy wave.
• 500g – 1kg piece of topside beef, eye round or loin piece • 1 cup red wine • 100g coarse sea salt • 100g sugar • 20g fresh or dried rosemary, chopped • 5g black peppercorns • 2.5g curing salt per kilo of meat (ask your local butcher)
Method Ensure that your meat is well trimmed of all fat and sinew Weigh the meat (essential for knowing when your bresaola is ready) Put meat in freezer bag and add red wine. Remove air, seal and refrigerate overnight Combine all cure ingredients, crush and grind in mortar & pestle. Remove refrigerated meat from bag, pat dry and add half of the

After one week, empty any liquid from bag, add the second half of cure mixture, reseal and refrigerate for one more week. Turn meat daily. i hing mui is a very popular snack in Hawaii. When growing up, I ate them like potato chips. There are leis made up of strung-together packages of li hing mui that people give as gifts. Li hing mui, called “crack seed” here on the islands, are dried preserved plums and are Chinese in origin. Found in Asian grocer shops, they can be sweet, salty, sour, wet or dried. Other
fruit, including lemons, mangoes and other stone fruit, are also given the li hing mui treatment. The nuances are all about the balance of sweet/salty/sour, with so many variations they are never consistently the same taste. This salad uses a dessert port, a dessert vermouth, and seductive vanilla. Alan Wong for Vanilla Table by Natasha MacAller
Add 1 ¼ fl cups/300ml water to all the ingredients, bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Cool, strain and then add to the dressing.
Heat the port and vermouth in a small saucepan. Let boil 5 minutes to burn off the alcohol, then remove from heat and decant to a bowl. Add the li hing mui juice, vanilla and prunes, whisking well. Set aside.
Strain the dressing, discarding prunes. Place dressing on the bottom of a bowl. Arrange the mixed baby lettuce, tomatoes, goat cheese balls and lightly toasted macadamia nuts on top, garnish with the vanilla pods.

In his new book, In the Mood for Colour, Hans Blomquist offers a swag of ideas and inspired illustrated suggestions for imaginative ways to inject colour into your home.
W
hile dark and moody colours can be hard to digest for some and loved by others, many people may long to try them but don’t dare. Dark hues can have such an impact and create a sense of drama yet at the same time give a very calm and cocooning feeling. Choose from the deepest indigo, inky black, thunder grey and earthy brown shades. Variations on these colours will work well with any style of architecture and decor, whether your home is super-modern or more traditional. If you don’t want an all-dark interior, you can still create drama by using contrasting colours. Placing dark pieces of furniture and textiles against a lighter backdrop can be just as effective and arresting as when the walls are dark too, as the objects will be thrown into relief.
While white may be the first choice for many when it comes to choosing colours for their home, it can feel a little boring and safe. To create a successful pale interior, it is important to work with layers of different textures and the lighter shades of various pigments, and to add vintage surfaces into the mix. Creating a textural mix in an all-white room will give it more depth and interest, as the different materials bring an extra dimension to an otherwise plain look. There is nothing wrong with plain, but if you want to add something extra, items with a rich patina will help you create a multilayered effect. Introducing some elements of natural wood will bring warmth and texture to a scheme that may otherwise seem stark. Soften interiors by adding a few vintage pieces, as an all-new, shiny interior can lack soul and personality. A key element to add to any interior is something green. If you look at a room and feel that something is missing, but you can’t put your finger on it, try introducing some greenery. It can be a single leaf, a potted plant or a few stems of wild flowers in a simple glass jar.

I recently attended a business seminar in Auckland themed around the challenges of performing under pressure. Although I’m not able to share the specific material put forward by the presenters, I am going to recount some of my most significant observations and the takehome tips that evolved from these. The seminar/summit was a collaboration between the Auckland Chamber of Commerce and the New Zealand Athletes Federation. The presenters were internationally recognized elite New Zealand athletes, all of whom were household names and singularly capable of causing a social media storm just by entering the building. This talented group shared their individual stories involving not only their outstanding successes but their soul-destroying failures, and in doing so provided the business attendees with strategies they could apply to their own professional lives. Business and sport share some commonalities. Success in either field requires a toolbox of strategies, specific disciplined behaviors, a strong mental psyche and a healthy dose of curiosity.
Performing under pressure as an athlete, as for anyone in business, is far from easy. The stakes are high and in my own industry they involve people’s biggest asset – their home – and engage their biggest emotional triggers around how they feel about it. This means business relationships that can see you teeter on the cusp of being a lifelong friend or being someone that the client never wants to work with again. The pressure comes from:
• The need to deliver, especially around price, and always around the processes or activities involved to achieve it. At times like listing, auction day, presenting offers or negotiating difficult terms, pressure is always a constant.
• The need to read and anticipate the market at any given time, just as the sportspeople presenting to us had to read the climate, their competitors and their level of fitness to undertake the job. I always do a simple and personal audit every morning to check my own level of ‘match fitness’ to lead our team. • The need to constantly make improvements. Training, be it in sport or

real estate, is a prerequisite for success and although the basics should always be attended to brilliantly, so to should new methodology be explored. High stakes require high levels of skill and commitment, and although no one at the seminar could count winning a gold medal or a Rugby World Cup among their own achievements (unlike our presenters), we could all dream about – and hope to emulate to a tiny degree – what it takes to perform under pressure and come out on top. So, there you go. As easy as it is to dismiss pressure as a New Age, First World concern, without it even the hope of performing well won’t ignite. Just imagine if Richie as a lad in Kurow, Valerie growing up in South Auckland, Hamish Carter and Mahé Drysdale hadn’t thought to confront pressure. As one of them said on the day, if I had known some of the right strategies earlier, I would have doubled my medals. Get your head around what your own pressure thresholds are and work in a space that lets you be your own champion.

This year, treasured New Zealand broadcaster Stacey Morrison was one of the chosen four alongside cook and dietitian Nadia Lim, Silver Fern Maria Tutaia and image consultant Lorraine Downes. realise how young she was. The grief gets easier but when I see how much she has missed out on… that is the tragedy… not knowing her grandchildren. “When Sealy came to me I thought it was amazing. I like the idea of mindfulness before sleep – feeling connected and safe. My design was inspired by whanau living, retro caravans, nostalgia, the arts and vintage. I wanted it to be in keeping with the colours of a Kiwi summer.” Stacey’s husband wrote the incantation around the bed base and it’s a saying they repeat to their children every night and translates to - ‘The sky is calm, the earth is at peace, the whole world is tranquil. Peaceful sleep descends, rest in the knowledge you are surrounded by deep affection, love and serenity. Rest now, rest well, rest is yours’. The four, one-off Exquisite beds will be listed on TradeMe between 17 and 31 October, with the entire proceeds donated to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.
