Combining experience with professionalism Whyte Construction’s commercial portfolio is extensive; the company covers a full range of building solutions, including new builds, strengthening, shop and office fitouts. One such project is 8 Nelson Street, Riccarton. From the initial discussions with the Dunn Family, commercial property owners and building contractors themselves, it was clear their building upgrade would require a high level of workmanship and structural integrity. The building had to be functional, yet have an architecturally modern edge, and Nelson Street certainly delivers. Based on this brief, Structural Engineer Kevin Simcock introduced the Dunn Family to Whyte Construction. “It was an interesting time for us as builders, having to entrust this major job to another construction company,” comments Roger Dunn. The Dunn Family believed the best approach was not to deal with assessors and insurance companies directly, but that it would in fact be beneficial to have a third-party deal with all of this on their behalf. From the first meeting with Whyte Construction, the three Dunn brothers – all builders – were impressed and felt confident entrusting Whyte’s to carry out this major construction work. Whyte Construction’s professionalism was evident from the outset, with the company’s managers, foreman, experienced quantity surveyors, detailed pricing and Whyte’s total efficiency throughout the job. The entire team at Whyte Construction, including the builders on site, ensured this 10-month contract ran smoothly, on time and within budget. The Dunn Family are so impressed with Whyte Construction, they have entrusted them to carry out two more major property refurbishments. Number 8 Nelson Street has been architecturally and structurally upgraded, along with a full refurbishment to a very high standard. With off-street parking on a sunny site, this makes it very appealing to potential tenants and their employees.

ith Canterbury Fashion Week next week, and our latest cover a fashionable nod to what we can expect from this year's show, I've been thinking quite a lot about the subject. Generating billions of dollars per annum in New Zealand, fashion is the untameable beast at the heart of consumer culture. The chameleon like nature of the industry keeps loyalists to 'what's hot and what's not' on their toes, and leaves the rest of us who consider ourselves a 'work in progress' rather perplexed. Situated at the ground floor of the Unimed building in central Christchurch, in a pristine retail space kindly brokered by Life in Vacant Spaces, the gallery is proudly funded by the Christchurch City Council through the Enliven Spaces Fund. Running until 1 October, Harsh Harmony is one of the current exhibitions. It is made up of 25 giclée fine art works of colourful, intricate, intimate and meditative abstractions taken from a collection of visual textures, found objects, photographs of the patina on rocks and anything else the artist Jagu Gibson discovered on Indian adventures. As Jagu has developed an interest in photography, she has learnt that the visual ‘textures’ we find in the natural world around us are able to be captured in photographs. These can then be digitised via tools on the computer with clever techniques used to extract the essential elements she introduces into her compositions. Jagu has suffered from multiple sclerosis for 15 years and her dedication to her art, despite the difficulty of her situation, should be celebrated within the wider community. The accessibility of computer software plays a large part in her process, and this is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness around both digital and realworld accessibility. Feeding mind,
BODY & SOUL She is a highly respected Nutritional Biochemist, Author and Speaker that requires little introduction; Dr Libby is the name on everyone’s lips concerning matters of personal health and wellbeing.
Ahead of the highly-anticipated release of her new book What Am I Supposed to Eat? the holistic nutrition specialist talks to Metropol about the power behind taking an informed approach to nutrition and what this involves. Why is food so challenging for so many people today? Between conflicting research and everything else we read online from people sharing their individual successes, it can be challenging to know what’s right for us. I think the problem is twofold. We are bombarded with too much information and it is simply overwhelming. We’re told to make ‘healthy’ choices but that word can be used to describe anything from a low-fat yoghurt or packet of biscuits to a banana. On the other side of the coin, we’ve also lost faith in our body’s wisdom and we no longer trust that we can make decisions for ourselves that best support our health. So we go looking for answers externally. When we don’t know who to trust, but we also don’t trust ourselves, it can make things incredibly complicated.
There are a lot of health and wellness bloggers appearing these days, are there any downsides to this? It’s truly wonderful that so many people are taking a vested interest in their own health and wellness, and helping to motivate and inspire others. What we need to be mindful of, is when specific nutrition-related information is claimed to be the best approach for everyone, especially when it comes from sources who have no training. We need to remember that what is supportive of one person may not be for another—and this is sometimes missed by health and wellness bloggers who are, with the best of intentions, trying to assist other people. We can miss out on vital nutrients by following particular eating guidelines, especially if the person doing the advising

doesn’t have an in depth understanding of how the body works. Plus, if someone is advising you and they haven’t asked you any questions about your health, or suggested you reflect on certain aspects of your life, then how can they know what is best for you? You talk about listening to your body, how do you do this? Obviously our body doesn’t have a voice; we can’t have a conversation with it! But it does give us feedback on a regular basis as to whether the decisions we are making are agreeing with it or not. Our body communicates to us with the symptoms we experience. It might be trying to communicate that we need to eat, drink, move, think, breathe, believe or perceive differently. It’s up to us to decipher what we need to change. This is one area where working one on one with a qualified health professional can be incredibly valuable. What do you hope people will get out of reading your new book? What Am I Supposed to Eat? delves deeply into the nutritional aspect of my three-pillared approach, examining the biochemistry of food along with what I’ve learned from 14 years of study and 20 years of clinical practice. My goal with this book is to help people get back in touch with how to best meet their own nutritional needs, instead of just following a prescribed diet or food plan without considering their bioindividuality. I hope that, through its pages, people will see the value of viewing food as nourishment and feel less confused about what to eat. How do we encourage the next generation to take better care of themselves? The next generation are in our hands. While of course they will make their own decisions as they grow up, we are all influenced by our childhood. The way we nourish and take care of ourselves is no exception. If we’re telling our children to do one thing and then doing another, they are going to see a discrepancy in that. They’re more likely to do what we do than do what we say! So, we encourage them to take better care of themselves by taking better care of ourselves. We also need to address the way we view food and the language we use to describe it. If we believe that food is simple calories, if we eat only to maintain or drop body weight, or fluctuate between dieting and eating poorly, that teaches the next generation to view food the same way.
If there was one thing we could change to improve our health what would it be? In terms of food, it would be to eat more vegetables. There are some studies that indicate that less than 10 percent of New Zealanders and Australians eat the recommended minimum of five serves of vegetables daily. It seems so small and insignificant, but it really does have an incredible impact on our health when we nourish ourselves this way. Dr Libby, internationally acclaimed Nutritional Biochemist, Author and Speaker, is bringing her brand new What Am I Supposed to Eat? live event to: Christchurch on 12 & 18 October from 7pm – 9pm, St Margaret’s College, 12 Winchester St. Tickets from www.drlibby.com/events

CMS has a long and respected history of bringing life, humour and drama to the stage. Formally established in 1964, the theatre company has reportedly been delighting audiences since the 1920s. The company prides itself on its diverse and daring offerings, all presented at a professional calibre seldom seen in amateur theatre. Recent productions have included Beauty and the Beast, Aida, Chicago and, most recently, its sell-out production of The Sound of Music. This November, NCMS presents Stephen Sondheim’s Company, a perceptive and urbane look at marriage and commitment that combines raw honesty with sophisticated humour. The storyline features the attractive and single Bobby, surrounded on his 35th birthday by his married friends. Through a series of vignettes with his friends and his three girlfriends, Bobby explores the many facets of modern relationships and his own lack of commitment. Songs include ‘Another Hundred People’, ‘Marry Me a Little’, ‘You Could Drive a Person Crazy’ and ‘Side by Side by Side’. Publicist for NCMS, Barbi Larkins, says, “NCMS is providing a step off the beaten track for Canterbury theatre-goers in their coming production. Sondheim’s Company takes a daring look at the realities of living single in a married world with sharp insight and often acerbic humour.” Company is performing 2-11 November 2017 at Rangiora Town Hall. Tickets available from i-ticket.co.nz and from ncms.co.nz.

FRANKIE’S SECRET While the cutest of cats often have large, sharp teeth, it’s not something usually featured on feline Instagram. Below the whiskers, problems can lurk.
F
rankie, an adored long-haired, regal black cat looks a picture of health. And she seemed to be…until the vet examined her mouth. Ourvets veterinary surgeon Geoff Mehrtens says it’s a little known fact that 70 percent of pets over three years have dental disease. Symptoms can vary widely depending on severity, but include smelly breath, reluctance to eat and in the worst cases – major infection. “Often people don’t realise that dental health plays a huge part in a pet’s overall well-being. Dental disease starts with a film of bacteria, mineralising over time and forming soft sludge which hardens to tartar. Animals suffer the sort of generalised ill-health that accompanies a low-grade infection. It drains their energy and as with any ‘tooth-ache’, it can become quite uncomfortable,” Geoff adds. Aged ten human years, Frankie started life the hard way as an abandoned kitten. When owner Clemency found her, she was existing on mostly insects and home was an uninviting spot under a hedge in Hanmer. Clemency took Frankie to Christchurch, where she upgraded to a loving home, and started eating a mixture of wet food and biscuits. Frankie trained her new ‘mum’ to offer wet food with crunch sprinkled over. Geoff Mehrtens advocates the benefits of a dry kibble, served alone for preventing tartar and gingivitis. He suggests owners look at pets’ teeth and discuss any changes with a professional. Frankie had significant tartar which would have made her teeth loose, and her gums tender, red and painful. Luckily, she’s had a full mouth clean under general anaesthetic before things worsened. Frankie can now enjoy a cleansed, healthy and pain-free mouth!

Children grow and change so fast – it’s the little moments and details of everyday life with them that are so precious and yet so hard to capture and hold in memory. Lifestyle photographer Paul Tatterson understands the importance of capturing moments that go by so quickly. With a young family himself, his passion for taking family photography out of the studio and into families’ homes and favourite places is all about capturing magic in the everyday. “I love being able to photograph families
just being themselves, having a great time together doing what families do,” Paul explains. “It’s not about props and poses or magazine-perfect settings for me. It’s about muddy gumboots, giant bear hugs and sparkly eyes.” Whether it’s epic couch forts, bedtime cuddles, snow fights, or baking purple
muffins (and licking the bowl!)… when families are in their favourite places doing their favourite things, Paul can capture the real personalities, stories and fleeting moments that are so special within every family - and so valuable. For further information, visit www.ptfamilies.co.nz.

Like many businesses that have been in operation for decades, Cameron & Co can lay claim to having an ‘inter-generational’ client base.
M
anager Julie Beijen says, “We often have the privilege of looking after 2 or 3 generations of clients from the same family, that speaks volumes about the way that we do business with our clients. “We always try and find a ‘fit’ for clients, someone to look out for a client, who will be proactive and give ‘preventative’ legal advice rather than sit back and wait until the legal needs are focused on a legal problem.” The firm is proud of the fact that it has built such a personalised relationship with its clients predicated on trust, integrity and mutual respect. “We love the fact that even though clients are coming to us for help with their legal needs, often the first point of business is catching up on what grandkids are up to, how the daughter’s

OE is going – it’s not quite textbook client lawyer etiquette, but it’s a core component of why clients are so loyal – they know that we care.”
The firm is proud of the fact that it has built such a personalised relationship with its clients predicated on trust, integrity and mutual respect. The firm’s profile mirrors the client demographic that we serve and it considers itself fortunate to have some of the region’s most experienced legal practitioners within the firm. “But equally, we have an influx of younger legal practitioners and legal professionals joining the team, and
that meets with a really good fit with the younger clients that the firm is beginning to attract.” Cameron & Co has a very strong collegial approach to the work it undertakes for clients, and all client work will be overseen by a partner of the firm, so clients will always have a relationship with senior legal staff within the business. “The benefit of such an approach is that we can couple young solicitors and young clients together who might be at similar stages in their lives – buying first homes, negotiating employment contracts, transitioning into providing for a young family – the synergy of the relationship works really well, but it always has the experience and legal expertise of senior legal staff in support.”

A DAY AT
By Céline Gibson
With Term 3 holidays looming, two fantastic exhibitions currently showing at Canterbury Museum, provide for that perfect weekend/holiday expedition.
Hākui: Women of Kāi Tahu profiles the achievements of 50 women from the perspective of kā uri whakatipu (today’s generation) and shared through taoka (treasured objects), photographs and memories. The term hākui is an acknowledgement of respect and a form of address to a female elder. Visitors have the opportunity to share memories of their own female forebears, or try their hand at plaiting kāwai kete (flax bag handles) in ‘Aunty’s Kitchen’. Hākui: Women of Kāi Tahu, is a touring exhibition from Otago Museum which

Postcards to Antarctica, by photojournalist Guy Frederick, celebrates Antarctica’s significance to science and humanity through photographs and film. “Writing a postcard to Antarctica may not be as strange as it seems,” Guy says. “Te Urewera and the Whanganui River have both been granted legal personhood status. That idea is really at the heart of my work – regarding the places in our lives
as a person that we have a relationship with, someone that impacts on lives and who deserves the same respect and justice that we all desire.” Guy visited Antarctica in December 2016 on Antarctica New Zealand’s Community Engagement Programme. Some of the greatest masterpieces in the world have been created in black and white – from Picasso’s sensual, monochromatic works to award-winning cinematic classic Casablanca. This simple yet striking palette has transcended many creative genres, including fashion.

oday we are celebrating these iconic hues in a stylish tribute – collating stunning wears and accessories that effortlessly illuminate the chic virtues of both black and white – individually, and as a match made in heaven. At a glance, it’s not hard to see why there is an enduring preoccupation with the combination. We’ve previously extoled the many virtues of black, dubbing it ‘the new black’, but this dynamic duo can offer so much more. Better yet, monochrome has received quite a makeover as reflected by the dominant looks on catwalks in the Northern Hemisphere. Black and white has shifted gear, moving from conservative to playful territory – designers are reimagining the concept with a play on black and white polka dots, racing checks and bold stripes. Black and white is always a win-win and with our must-haves you definitely can’t go wrong.

There is even an opportunity for children and teenagers to join in the fun, with the unique KSFX holiday programme. The specialised school was established by renowned Christchurch makeup artist, Kristen Stewart, as a sister company to her successful makeup school, Kristen Stewart School of Make Up (KSSM). The courses were developed in conjunction with Midge Holding, Minifies owner and highly experienced BBC trained makeup artist. Midge is also a mentor and guest speaker for the course in her specialist area of TV Makeup.
Tutor Rebecca Guyton, who has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry, teaches the latest techniques in special effects, including cuts and bruises, airbrushing, prosthetics, and working with facial hair and wigs. Classes are deliberately kept small to maximise learning potential and ensures graduates are work-ready to the highest international standards. The holiday programmes run for a week of the school holidays, for ages 8-12 and 13-17, Rebecca says. “They learn a new technique every day and on the last day they make each other up as a special character, such as a zombie or vampire, and we have a photoshoot – it’s a lot of fun.” Visit www.ksfx.co.nz for more info or to apply.

ummer also brings with it a lighter, brighter air to dressing which works to lift the spirits. Here are the top 5 trends that I see shining through for summer.
Bridget Hope, Magpie Style STYLE DOCTOR By Wardrobe Director
FASHION FORECAST
LET IT BE SPRING! There is something magical about the optimism of spring that I wish I could bottle. People are generally happier in spring; the promise of longer days, the prospect of a voluptuous garden and that pre-Christmas buzz that comes in the knowledge that you are on the right side of summer.
1.
WHITE – Now is the time to invest in a new pair of white pants, mainly because the most flattering styles tend to sell-out early. Seek out fabrics in stretch to avoid losing the will to live after trying the first pair. I almost always recommend going up a size in white pants to avoid show-through and cling. Narrow styles are generally the more flattering regardless of your shape or age. This summer, a new pair of white pants will be the connector piece to your wardrobe as they look great with almost every printed tunic or shirt and breathe new life into summer styles.
2.
ON SAFARI – Animal prints in chiffons, linen and mesh fabrics will add a touch of glamour to your weekend wardrobe. Great when worn with black, they can also be a go-to staple for holiday travel. Avoid wearing too much gold with animal prints as it can come off a little brassy and instead opt for neutral tones in black and white with graphic accessories. That said a pop of bright colour with an animal print can also make it your own. Animal prints are timeless and don’t date as quickly as some bold prints can.

3.
LINEN – Choose linen in styles where a little crumpling will add to the relaxed look rather than making you feel like a crumpled mess at the end of a day. A full linen skirt in a bold print, an easy linen shirt, or neutral jacket does project an easy elegance when worn well. Not all linens are created equal. Look for lightweight fabrics over heavier, thicker weaves.
4.
THE COLD SHOULDER – No matter what your body hang-ups are (and we all have them) every woman has a great shoulder and this summer’s cut-outs play beautifully to this. The Paula Ryan Magyar Top is my go-to style for summer. Loose fitting and with a slight dolman sleeve, it hides a fuller mid-section while showing a touch of the upper arm and shoulder. It also ties back beautifully with the new season fuller printed skirts.
5.
THE BELL SLEEVE – I am still perplexed about the notion of the bell sleeve. Why we would add volume to our narrowest area is beyond me. But for summer, the bell sleeves continue. Look for styles with a gentle easy bell sleeve that will complement the arm rather than blow it out completely. A bell sleeve which narrows around the wrist will always be the most flattering and complementary style to any outfit.

THE SKIN
Chronic low-grade inflammation within our body is often the cause of disease and ageing.
Mr Laporte, Gernetic training centre, France.
C
onsistent inflammation ultimately manifests in and on the skin as wrinkles, pigmentation, loss of elasticity, redness, itchiness, flaking, breakout and dullness, says Beauty Progress owner, Wendy Barker. “It’s not fun and it ain’t pretty.” Senescence is the irreversible loss of the power of division and growth of cells often caused by damaged DNA. Mr Laporte, founder of Gernetic French skin and bodycare, suggests eating and drinking cannot totally nourish skin or reduce external inflammation and most food and liquid is degraded by the digestive system. Everyone reacts differently to what nourishment reaches the skin after other essentials organs have taken their ‘cut’. “All of my work has been towards making
product penetrate through skin so the digestive system will synthesise the active elements effectively,” he says. When applying Gernetic creams with effleurage movements, large fatty molecules remain on the skin, while smaller molecules go deeper, absorbing nutrients into the bloodstream delivering to organs such as the liver, helping counteract ‘deficiencies’ and skin problems. Mr Laporte explains Gernetic creams deliver exact dosages of active vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids and oligo elements. Synchro day and night moisturiser is the ‘hero’, with anti-inflammatory benefits for sensitive and reactive skins. All facial treatments at Beauty Progress Thai Massage Spa include Synchro face, neck and shoulder massage. Beauty Progress has a new treatment, Les Parfait Facial, (The Perfect, in French). To celebrate the launch, seventy-five minutes of pure luxury is on offer including a face, neck and décolletage massage, anti-age mask, eye treatment, luxurious foot and leg massage all for a special introductory offer of $129.00 (normally $229.00). A world-leading new University of Canterbury research trial aims to help pregnant women improve symptoms of anxiety and antenatal depression through better nutrition.
P
sychology PhD student Hayley Bradley is recruiting pregnant women for a new clinical trial at the University of Canterbury’s Medical Health and Nutrition Research Group. “New Zealand has one of the highest rates of depression and anxiety among pregnant women in the developed world, between 12 to 25 percent. It is well known that depression and anxiety during pregnancy can have devastating short and long-term consequences – not only for the pregnant woman but also for her baby and the wider family,” she says. Current treatments include antidepressant medication or psychotherapy. However, given the risks associated with in-utero exposure to antidepressants and barriers such as access and cost associated with psychotherapy, many pregnant women remain untreated.
“Alternative interventions are therefore desperately needed. We want to see if vitamins and minerals can help pregnant women deal better with low mood and anxiety,” Hayley says. One emerging treatment option is nutritional supplementation. Nutritional demands are increased during childbirth which may potentially result in nutritional deficiencies. There is also emerging evidence that poor diet and nutritional deficiency may be correlated with postnatal depression. It would therefore make sense to increase the nutritional intake of pregnant women which can be done by supplementing their diets. “Evidence has accumulated over the last decade showing large, beneficial effects of broad-spectrum vitamin and mineral (micronutrient) interventions for various mental health problems suggesting that micronutrient interventions could be a
Throughout the study, participants will be required to complete various assessments and provide two blood samples to examine any changes in DNA activity, nutrient levels and inflammatory biomarkers that may predict a treatment response. Participants will also have the option to undergo a short ECG to see the impact nutrients have on brain activity. “This study is open to pregnant women across the Canterbury region and focuses on improving outcomes for those suffering from low mood and anxiety. Should the micronutrients prove beneficial, then pregnant women will have an alternative treatment option available, especially taking into consideration the positive effects micronutrients have for other psychiatric symptoms.” The study may also provide evidence for better health, wellbeing and development of infants exposed to nutrients in-utero. “When this research is interpreted alongside the large body of literature showing the importance of nutrients and nutrition for mental health, there is potential that a nutrient approach results in a fundamental shift in how we conceptualise and treat mental disorders during pregnancy,” Hayley says. Pregnant women interested in the study can register their interest and find more information about the pregnancy study at www.bit.ly/pregnancy-study or contact the study’s coordinator Hayley Bradley by phone on 03 364 2987 ext. 7705 or email hayley.bradley@pg.canterbury.ac.nz.

promising way forward,” she says. The Medical Health and Nutrition Research Group is recruiting for a study (until December 2018) to see whether a multi-vitamin and mineral (micronutrient) treatment can improve symptoms of depression and anxiety in pregnant women. In this double blind, randomised, controlled trial, women between 12 and 20 weeks pregnant will take either the micronutrient formula or an iodine supplement for 12 weeks. After 12 weeks, all women will have the opportunity to take the micronutrient formula for a further 12 weeks or until their baby arrives. Participants and their babies will be followed up postnatally to ensure wellbeing and see if the nutrients can also prevent postnatal depression and anxiety and improve developmental outcomes for infants.

BLACK FOREST BANANA PEEL SMOOTHIE I’ve snuck in banana peel here to add the extra nutrients of vitamin B6 and B12, as well as magnesium and potassium. Just make sure the bananas are washed and super ripe resulting in a sweeter flavour. For a vegan option, feel free to use almond or coconut milk in place of dairy.
There aren’t many better ways to start the day than with a Black Forest Smoothie. Chocolate, berries and banana (skin and all) are combined to make one deliciously thick, creamy and healthy smoothie. SERVES

2 medium bananas, washed, unpeeled and sliced 1 cup frozen mixed berries 2 tbsp almond butter 2 cups regular or almond milk 2 tsp chia seeds 1½ tbsp cocoa powder 2 tbsp raw honey Add all ingredients to a blender or smoothie maker and blitz on high-speed until completely smooth. Divide mixture between 2 glasses and top with extra banana if you wish.

J
uicing may have enjoyed a seemingly unending profile in the world of wellness, but according to the powers that be, the kudos it has earned will continue. According to legendary food writer and author Annabelle White, “Juices will get bigger and we will see more raw food and healthy options”. For those of us who haven’t jumped on this nutritional bandwagon, ingredients of the moment include kale and cucumber; antioxidant rich stars such as blueberries, strawberries and mango; detox darlings including high-fiber root vegies ginger, beet, carrots and apple; among many others. Google has infinite recipes on tap so bottoms up!
The Villas is inviting its happy guests to speak for themselves. Here’s what just a few of them told the stunning restaurant on its Facebook page. First Table – Review of the week “Whisked away upstairs to a room filled with beautiful artwork and warmth. Food just fantastic, we had roasted duck leg and Flintstone steak. Even though already full, we had to try desserts... pana cotta with saffron sauce and sticky toffee pudding were just the perfect finish to the meal. Staff all friendly and happy. 10/10.” “In a class of its own” We went for breakfast here for the first time. The atmosphere and decor was beautiful, full of character. The restaurant was spotlessly clean; the food was just delicious and reasonably priced. The staff were very welcoming and attentive without being intrusive. There was no loud music to spoil the peace and conversation. Highly recommend The Villas. We will definitely be visiting again.” “Superb Service”. Wonderful staff. I was in Christchurch for the Weekend and came here for breakfast both the days. I was amazed to see the second day that one of the staff recognised me from the previous day and remembered my drink selection as well. Warm and cosy sitting arrangements for cold Christchurch mornings. I’m definitely coming here again.” Why don’t you book a table or drop in and find out why people love The Villas?

sophistication that is the Hotel Montreal. I caught up with Vicki Bretherton, Hotel Manager who told me, “I am delighted to be at the helm of one of New Zealand’s finest boutique hotels. We have a passionate team committed to excellence in service and product.” The stunning location has also teamed up with Showbiz Christchurch and will be providing packages, as part of a worthy sponsorship, to patrons of the hotel. A local hotel supporting local arts. Like all good things, Hotel Montreal ticks all the boxes for guests and people visiting for food and beverage. Quality and style go hand in hand for a great experience.

WINE By Ben Selby
If you see yourself as a connoisseur of the grape, then you might go redder than a pinot noir with jealously. A team of four Kiwis has been selected to compete in the World Wine Tasting Championships in France in October 2017, the first New Zealand team to do so.
T
he team was decided at The Option Bistro in Northwood in August where contestants tasted over 40 local and international wines. The Blind Tasting Challenge which followed put palates through their paces as contestants had to sample 12 mystery wines from around the world, with the highest point scorers being selected for the team. When Chef David Napier found out he had been chosen to represent New Zealand at the Olympics of Wine, he thought someone was pulling a prank on him. “I honestly thought it was a big joke, like someone was winding me up. It’s awesome to be given the chance to represent New Zealand in this competition and show the international scene that we are a wine growing country.” Fellow team member Dion Wai also expressed his interest to fly the fern and share the stage with the international sommeliers. “We have never been present at this competition before and our attendance is exemplary not just to our emerging sommelier scene but to the levels of high quality we are producing.” The World Wine Tasting Championships will be held in Nuits-St-Georges, France on 13 and 14 October.

a protected outdoor environment where access is made very easy. Comprised of two lake areas, there is a great deal of wildlife and fauna. Why did no one in Christchurch tell me about this? Mount Victoria, although windy, is a great way to see the surrounding Wellington area. My visit to the restaurants and bars of Courtney Place, with its quirky multicultural foods and charismatic interiors and great cuisine, were nothing short of delightful. The Chocolate Milkshake at Slim Davies and the Poutine at Pravda are must-do cuisine experiences. A roam down Cuba street visiting an eclectic range of stores and a snack lunch at the weekend markets on the waterfront made for a full weekend of activity and I wished I had more time to explore. Although leaving the Grand Mercure luxury was hard, Wellington really made it worthwhile. I was totally surprised by the diversity it had to offer. Would I recommend Wellington and the Grand Mercure for a weekend away? Absolutely, Positively Wellington I would.
@nickhenare
I
nvited to stay at the Grand Mercure overlooking the city, I decided I’d give Wellington a go, and on arrival, I picked up the VW EGolf thanks to Europcar and VW to get around in. The Grand Mercure has just finished renovations and has an incredibly stylish, modern design. Foragers is its in-house restaurant and provides a truly gourmet menu with head chef, Steve Fernando, making me some exquisite dishes. Truffle and mushroom ravioli, beef cheeks with apple and pear, duck ragu and orange witloof were all there to amaze my palate. And the service was truly 5-star. The impressive elegance of the hotel’s food and amenities inevitably make it hard to leave, but I managed to pull myself away for an exploration of the city. Visiting the incredible Gallipoli exhibit at Te Papa is an unquestionable 10/10 must see. It’s a visceral exhibition thanks to Weta Workshops input. I felt the same about Zealandia; a native reserve not 10 minutes from the hotel and a pure “WOW” visit. Discover native birds and animals in

can, therefore, attest with sincerity that there are many wares to marvel over in this gateway to Africa. Extravagant, eclectic, enthralling to the eye; Moroccan style furnishings burst with colour and boast fabulous fabrics. At home in New Zealand, we have décor for Africa (pun intended) that pays homage to this world-wonder and its artisan style creations. From glittering gold cutlery and ornate ceramic bowls, through to striking linens, pillows and tiles, you can transform your abode into a mecca of magnificent accents. Maximalism is the aim of this stylish game introducing unapologetically bold hues, prints and textures. There is a great deal of freedom in this aesthetic thanks to Morocco’s wildly diverse nature – made up of Arabic, Berber, European and subSaharan African immigrants. The interior design possibilities reflect the myriad contributions made by these creative sub-cultures. Here is a small selection of the marvels you could make your own.
TIMELESS DESIGN Architects and designers regularly use the word “timeless” – however the term can be easily overused or thrown around. Often buildings are revered because they’re so timeless, but what does that actually mean, and how can you achieve it? Metropol sat down with the team at O’Neil Architecture to figure out the nuts and bolts of timeless design in architecture.
“O
ften new clients come to us because they’ve seen one of our designs either on the street or on our website that resonates with them. What they may not realise initially, is that the house could be 10 - 15+ years old; to us, this is a testament to the value of good enduring design.” Enduring design doesn’t draw from trends, it is quietly understated and requires restraint; it allows the process of weathering to improve the architecture, with attention focusing on function, form and relevance. Good design is as much about what you cannot see, as it is about what you can see. It deliberately organises
the functional elements, like structural walls, and allows for big open spaces that can be altered and changed over time as needed. Timeless design has many key elements, starting with the above; however, each project needs to be assessed individually to suit the client needs, the sites, and the environmental factors. O’Neil Architecture offers obligation free meetings and is happy to discuss your future ideas or projects, If you would like more information about the services the team can offer you, enquire via the website at www.oneil.co.nz, or give one of the friendly team a call to discuss further.
ENDURING DESIGN DOESN’T DRAW FROM TRENDS, IT IS QUIETLY UNDERSTATED AND REQUIRES RESTRAINT.

BEAUTIFUL OUTDOOR FURNITURE T
“
Furniture comes in various colours and styles.
What do you do if you simply can’t find what you are looking for - if the product is either not good enough quality or too expensive?
he answer, as far as The Crowded House Furniture Company was concerned, was to design, source and import it directly themselves from an overseas manufacturer. “The manufacturer we deal with builds the furniture to our specifications,” owner Jodi says. “That means the outdoor furniture we sell is appropriate for New Zealand conditions and the New Zealand way of life. Our outdoor chairs and lounger sets have generous proportions and are therefore really comfortable to relax in.” “We have outdoor furniture for every occasion from hanging egg chairs, dining tables and chairs and lounger sets to sun
loungers, bar sets and bar stools. We also have extra large waterproof storage boxes designed to take all those large cushions that often end up filling up your lounge and garage.” Made of UV resistant polyethylene rattan over solid powder aluminium frames, the outdoor furniture comes in various colours and styles. oday, entertaining at home has never been easier and nobody knows this better than clients of Canterbury based company Louvre Solutions, owned and operated by Craig Rogers. Craig’s company has removed all the challenges an environment can bring with hosts now able to plan an outside gathering without having to worry about whether or not there will be a change in the weather. A customised, automated louvre roof over a patio, spa pool, or deck, or as a freestanding feature anywhere on a property, provides a space sheltered from the elements. But the benefits don’t just stop there. A louvre roof is an affordable and brilliant addition to a home. Practical and stylish, it can be planned as part of the home’s initial design, or retrofitted once the need is identified post-construction. With more than ten years in the industry, the business’ reputation has been built on a solid foundation. Testament to this is the positive feedback from clients and the referred business generated through word of mouth from architects, landscape architects and building companies.

SUMMER SETTING
Spring is here and, with the promise of warmer weather on the horizon, Kiwis are thinking about the long summer evenings ahead when they can enjoy a barbecue outside with family and friends.
“At the research, development and design stage, we worked closely with our engineers to ensure all our products could endure whatever the environment threw at them,” says Craig who works with his team alongside clients from the free measure and quote stage to design and installation. Attending to any adjustment needs that may follow is all part of the service. “It’s all about building a product that has not only been engineered correctly but also installed correctly,” says Craig. “It’s also important to me to build a good rapport with my clients and it’s paramount for them to know that you are an established and reputable company.” The quality of products, which, as well as motorised opening louvre roofs also includes elliptical sun louvres, privacy and security screens, gates, fences, chimney cowls, cedar louvres and vertical sun shades, has never been faulted. All products come with a ten-year warranty. Louvre Solutions manufactures its products at its Canterbury-based factory for agents located in Queenstown, Wanaka, Central Canterbury, Marlborough and Nelson. The business can have a louvre roof ready for installation within four to six weeks, making now just the right time to order if you want to be ready for summer. PIONEERING LANDMARK PROJECTS
Two years prior to the dedication of Oi Manawa Canterbury Earthquake Memorial Wall, Peter Carroll made six trips to Northern Italy, and two trips to a quarry in the remote rainforest of Haikou Island, China. His mission was the procurement and delivery of two hundred tons of Carrara marble and 125 tons of basalt.
Rooms, sleep outs, studios, creative space
T
he family business, SlabCo Ltd, was lead contractor on supply of materials, design detailing and fixing that became what is perhaps one of the most important landmarks in Canterbury. “It was an extremely tight programme,” Peter says. To meet the deadline, the entire SlabCo team was working seven days a week, occasionally pulling 18 hour days. On 22 February 2017, the stunning memorial Oi Manawa was unveiled to the nation. The business wholesales marble, granite, basalt, engineered stone and semi-precious stone for projects ranging from benchtops and stone cladding to large public space projects, commercial and residential developments. Peter
has more than 30 years in the stone trade with completed projects in Europe, Hong Kong, Kuwait, and right here in Canterbury, recently supplying Brazilian Super-White Granite to the new Novatel Airport project. The Christchurch warehouse stocks internationally sourced granite from Brazil and Madagascar; Iranian Onyx; Spanish and Lebanese Marble, to name a few. Many materials are unique to SlabCo. Peter says, “We pride ourselves on superb quality, from quarry to project site”. These exacting standards and high demand have paved the way for a new Auckland operation for early 2018. THE TEAM OFFERS AN EXPERT DESIGN CONSULTATION SERVICE TO HELP CUSTOMERS CREATE THEIR DESIRED AESTHETIC. “Visiting your home to help choose the right design for you, and then to make sure the layout and installation brief is correct, is all part of the experience. Our goal is to make sure people are having a pleasant experience – we simplify the process and so many of our customers tell us how easy we make it for them and that they don’t get this kind of service anywhere else.” The business also has strong relationships with leading Canterbury designers who utilise it for tile advice and supply. A current trend is the ‘woodlook’ tile, for interiors as well as exteriors, such as such as patios, terraces, paths and walkways. Another popular, unique look is ‘tile rugs’ – choose two different tiles to create the appearance of a rug, with a range of different colours, patterns, finishes and sizes to add contrast and character. INSIDE & OUT The team from Cymon Allfrey Architects offer an insight into what makes them stand out from the crowd when it comes to offering the complete design package.
A
s biological beings we essentially all live and function the same way, meaning the basic needs for our houses – bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living – are the same, but how these spaces interact and connect, influences how we live, enjoy and experience our homes. Architecture is not simply about being shiny and new, it is about well-crafted, well-organised spaces that
enhance living, not limit it. However, many only consider architecture as an external benefit, as a tool that has been utilised to craft a well-orientated, well-dressed ‘shell’ of a structure on a site. At Cymon Allfrey Architects our ability to offer an end-to-end architectural service allows us to achieve a cohesive and coordinated design for our clients, both inside and out.

We believe the success of your interior comes down to the relationships that exist between your internal spaces. Where interior design provides the finishing touches, interior architecture provides the canvas on which these touches can be applied, working together to create a wellcrafted interior that will stand the test of time. For example, your kitchen needs to be considered in terms of positioning and connection to other spaces, to ensure it is maximising its function within the home. The materials and decorative finishes then come second. Where you envision having your morning coffee, eating your lunch, entertaining, and so forth, is influenced by the internal spaces you have available. And translating this vision for living is not simply about ticking the boxes around required spaces, but ensuring your interior has been approached holistically. The manner in which we envision these different activities in our home, and how we want our interior environments to perform, is all part of the dream that is presented at the beginning of the project. As a team of architects and designers, the Cymon Allfrey Interior Team has a unique set of skills that allows it to extract and understand the idiosyncrasies of how you live, based on these early discussions. This is about taking your interior beyond our biological needs, and considering new ways of living, while achieving cohesion
INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE ALLOWS THE PROVISION OF A COHESIVE AND COORDINATED DESIGN FROM THE INSIDE OUT. between inside and out. We recently received a commendation at the 2017 ADNZ-Resene Design Awards for a residential interior; recognition of our ability to provide a cohesive and fully considered end result. A new build, the project allowed us to work with our clients to provide a complete design package and offer them a deeper grain of detail. The architectural language, inside and out, was the same and the palette of materials and finishes was integrated to ensure the interior architecture (such as the kitchen) was a complete solution, rather than simply an installation into the space.
Whether we are working with you to build something from the ground up, or offering our skills to provide an interior solution within someone else’s architecture, we are proud to be able to deliver interiors that deliver new and creative solutions to living. Interior architecture allows the provision of a cohesive and coordinated design from the inside out. While one cannot exist without the other, the success and enjoyment of your interior is intrinsically linked to the success of your home as a whole. F O E S I R E& THE RIS
I’m sure I’m not the only employer who wonders at the incredible influence of social media in the workplace. Only a few years ago, having Facebook up on your work computer would have resulted in either an awkward “what are you up to?” moment or a straight-out “get off that” bark. Well, from me at least, because many of the things I was seeing didn’t apply to the task at hand. But things have changed. Social media in many of its applications now provides a viable form of connection and marketing. It’s become an integrated business tool and a purposeful part of any real estate company’s DNA. A lot of people might say, “I saw that coming,” and they might be right, but who would have thought we would measure
‘likes’ and ‘impressions’, employ a full-time videographer, have a ‘boosting’ budget or look to identify our top posts of the month. Not only do we actually get engagement and business opportunities from our social media, with connections being made beyond our own country’s borders, we know the demographics behind the engagement: how many people we reach, how many of these engage with the posts or videos, what ages predominate and what time of the day they are looking. Because I know that the most views are from followers online between 3pm and 4pm on Fridays, I’m thinking they either want to see what properties are new to the market for the weekend ahead or can’t wait to quit the day and just want to enjoy the passive act of constant scrolling.

The reach of social media, backed up by the massive engines of Facebook and Google, hasn’t displaced great hardcopy marketing, but like anything deeply innovative it adds an interesting and potentially competitive new ingredient. Conversely, it can also bore and offend with its repetitive and disruptive nature. It can also make the world so incredibly filtered (as in Instagram) that all sense of reality is lost. As with all change, there are followers and detractors, imitators and originals. I’m in the ‘let’s make it happen’ camp, because it’s not going away and, although I’d normally not admit to it, a ‘like’ is a ‘like’ is a ‘like’. Spring is a breath away and I for one can’t wait. If your’e hooked on your computer and your social media, now’s the time to give yourself a break!

That is an advantage because details are important. “It gets you up close and personal, and allows you to pick up and fix even the smallest defect.” Hailing from Ireland, Paul met Hornby girl Justene in London and they moved to Christchurch and have lived here ever since. In 1994 he established his owner-operated plastering service. Over nearly twenty-five years, Paul and his team have plastered many homes that have gone on to win industry awards, a testament to good workmanship and extremely high standards. “We work in many architecturally designed houses, each with different shapes, angles and challenges.” Hill sites are also a specialty. Paul’s business has provided high quality plastering services and expertise to builders, architects, and painters. “We aim to keep the painters happy,” he says. Painters can only do their job properly if the plastered surface is flawless. Only high quality materials are used.” Paul prides himself on professionalism in all his interactions, and being respectful of his clients’ homes, both while on the job and in the cleanup. His fully qualified team is experienced with all aspects of plastering services, EQC work, renovations and new builds, coving, cornices, negative detail and even stippling. The hardwearing Charles Parson fabric is guaranteed against fading for three years. After her Diploma in Soft Furnishings from Fashion and Interior Design College of New Zealand, the A+ student started business in 1994. She’s now assisted by daughter Leanne Boyte, with artist-husband Ray Lewis’s inspiration. The showroom displays accessories and fabric ranges for cushions through to curtains. s the Christchurch and Canterbury economies continue to grow apace, good infrastructure will be vital to ensure an increase in economic activity is well supported. The evolution of our highway infrastructure is impressive and needs to continue. The work in progress to connect Christchurch to Rolleston with a four-lane highway, the overbridge at the Airport (over State Highway 1) and the continuing progress on the Northern Motorway are all very encouraging.
The evolution of our highway infrastructure is impressive and needs to continue. Regardless of who assumes power post23 September the continuation of four lane highways from Ashburton through to Pegasus township will be vitally important for our future. It will make an incredible difference to traffic flows on State Highway 1. If the proposed investment is adopted and quickly it will be another big step forward in good infrastructure in Canterbury that will reinforce this city and this region as a living destination of choice. Regardless of the development of other forms of transport, good regional roading resulting in good connectivity is going to be important for a long time yet. From the perspective of ease of travel through to the efficient movement of products and the increased safety of our roading network, investment is necessary and welcome.
T
he construction industry’s perceived inability to be an innovation adopter is receiving considerable attention of late. This is not just a local problem. In 2016, the World Economic Forum labelled the global construction industry’s track record on innovation adoption as “unimpressive”. Closer to home, a recent Herald headline read: “Building, the industry that got left behind”. In my view, market forces will drive innovation. In the current low-margin environment, the market has little capacity to pay more for a new building, house, or piece of infrastructure. Therefore, in order to provide competitive advantage, the sector needs to develop ways to cut cost and time from the construction process. One such example of this playing out is the builder who won the Innovation category at the recent NZIOB Awards for Excellence. He developed a rolling gantry that temporarily supported 12 tonnes of roof area, while providing a safe working platform. That innovation cut 15 weeks from the build programme. Sometimes a little incentive helps. This year, the NZIOB Charitable Trust awarded a $10,000 scholarship to an academic proposing to develop New Zealand’s first Facades major for a construction qualification. Another winner will use their $10,000 prize to fund research into ways to reduce the construction industry’s waste. The BRANZ led Industry Transformation Agenda addresses the innovation adoption deficit in New Zealand. With meaningful buy-in across the industry, construction is set for a powerful sea-change to the way the sector designs, documents, and delivers our built environment.

arlier this year the Christchurch Foundation was announced as an initiative that will have a significant impact on Christchurch for generations to come. We are close to completing the formal establishment of the Foundation. I thought it timely to remind Christchurch residents of our objectives. The foundation has been formed to foster and promote philanthropy within the city. Through it, corporates and individual donors can contribute to a range of charities, causes, projects and communities, thereby creating a legacy for the long-term good of Christchurch. Gifts can also be ‘untagged’ and spent at the discretion of the foundation which will ensure donor wishes are met. It will make it easier for those who live here, newly arrived citizens and expatriates abroad, to give directly to their city and existing charities. We are already seeing interest from corporates and organisations in other parts of the country, who want to engage with and build relationships with Christchurch. This approach to supporting Christchurch has already appealed to KPMG, Perception PR and Marketing, Spark, Southbase and TSB Bank which are the foundation’s first principal partners. This new strategic thinking is coming from the next generation of Christchurch citizens and business leaders who are now shaping our city. They want and know there are better and more dynamic ways of sharing wealth that will provide greater well-being for us all and assist in creating a more interesting city.

wo of the Government’s largest anchor projects have made tangible progress in recent weeks, providing a real boost to the construction industry. In early August, I announced a $240 million contract to complete the design and construction of Christchurch Convention Centre. To date, the Government has spent $74 million on land acquisition, $34 million on professional services and $4 million on land remediation. Our main works contractor, CPB Contractors Limited, has committed to completing construction in the first quarter of 2020. The Convention Centre will be a worldclass boutique facility, capable of hosting international conferences as well as community meetings, balls, galas and weddings. The Government estimates a direct economic benefit of more than $320 million in the first eight years and $57 million every year after that. Continued development in the central city and wider Christchurch area is vital for economic growth and, importantly, jobs. A pre-feasibility report for the Multi-Use Arena is now in the public domain and prompting much discussion. The report considers the viability of an arena and outlines four options of varying size, functionality and cost. The preferred option is for a 30,000-capacity arena with a fully closed roof and retractable turf, but whatever the final configuration may be, this is great news for the local construction sector. Work is expected to start next year but I’d like to explore getting the groundworks started even sooner. The Multi-Use Arena is the final anchor project to get underway and the Government is committed to getting it done for the benefit of Christchurch.

here is no doubt that mental health is a huge concern to many of us. In recent years here in Christchurch, it’s become a huge challenge for so many families. I am being overwhelmed and saddened by my conversations with parents and teachers about just how much some of our young people are struggling with mental health related problems such as behavioural issues and developmental delays. Families, schools and health care professionals are all doing their best in these circumstances. However, under the National government, many mental health services are underfunded. The current CDHB’s school mental health team provides help to children at primary, intermediate, and secondary level – but it has just seven full-time staff covering 136 schools. This is not nearly enough. This is why I was so proud to be with Jacinda Ardern in August as we announced Labour’s plan for better mental health care for our Canterbury kids. We’re committed to boosting health funding by $8b more than National, including restoring National’s $2.3b of underfunding. This will go a long way in helping to give our children the resources they need. Labour also will provide 80 health professionals to provide mental health services in primary and intermediate schools in Christchurch and other earthquake-affected parts of Canterbury, including Kaikoura, for an initial three years. We have to do better for our young people in this country. It’s not good enough to keep our kids waiting for up to six weeks before they can be seen by a professional. A Labour government in September will put mental health and wellbeing first.
I
t’s that time of the political cycle again when politicians are making promises about how they are going to spend our money on us. Both major parties have been throwing lolly scrambles in Christchurch, in a bid to push for our vote. I’m always a bit cynical when politicians use our hard-earned tax dollars to bribe us, largely for their own gain, i.e. to have a job in parliament. That been said, there has been a lot of new infrastructure spending promised for Christchurch, which will provide further momentum for the rebuild. The election and associated spending spree will hopefully result in a kick start to some of the anchor projects and also, hopefully, the proposed new stadium. Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr indoor stadium has been a huge success. Not only is it ideal for staging rugby matches in the depths of winter, but it is also ideal for staging concerts from international superstars requiring a large indoor arena. Take it from somebody who attended AC/DC and Guns n Roses in Wellington recently in hurricane-like conditions, a large weather-proof indoor stadium will be a great asset. It is also hoped the extra cash being thrown at Christchurch will result in the construction of the much publicised convention centre, which will be another tremendous asset. All this extra spending is also good news for us engineers, as these large infrastructure projects will require engineering input. The learnings from the Canterbury earthquakes, in particular the design of foundations for liquefaction-prone areas, will ensure they are robust and able to withstand the harmful effects of liquefaction associated with any potential earthquake events.

Q&A: CURATED CONTENT FOR A REBUILDING CITY On September 6, 2010, while many of us were still coming to terms with the shock of the earthquake, Deon Swiggs was busy conceptualising what would become one of the most visible and accessible information portals; a collaboration of curated content for a city hungry with the need to know.
S
even years later, Rebuild Christchurch remains a central pillar of the Canterbury rebuild and, likewise, Swiggs remains one of the city’s most active advocates. Canterbury Build magazine talks to Swiggs about the work of his foundation, his role in council and where to from here for Rebuild Christchurch. How did the concept of Rebuild Christchurch eventuate? Rebuild Christchurch was born on the 6th September 2010, my birthday. I was quite over shovelling silt and wanted to find information about the earthquake and I discovered it wasn’t easily accessible in one place. So, I decided to build a simple blog to tell my story, so there was one portal where I could share all the information I had gathered.

How do you see Rebuild Christchurch’s role evolving in the future? As the rebuild evolves, so must we. On September 1st, I started my final Master’s thesis on this very topic. In my mind, we need to move forward from a rebuild story to sharing the story of our city. To do this, some elements of our brand will be wound up, but the intellectual property and ability to share stories and
canterbury build
Locals will only be familiar with the visible aspect of Rebuild Christchurch; can you tell us about the work of your foundation? Online we have a very visible and commanding presence, but after the February 2011 earthquake it was quickly noted we needed to use our voice and help people. We set up the Rebuild Christchurch Foundation with the purpose of supporting people in recovery through volunteer coordination, events, funding support and provision of information. We were fully self-funded and mostly worked to support and strengthen existing organisations in the community to better help them deliver their needs at a very stressful time. Back then, we will have coordinated tens of thousands of volunteer hours and financially supported dozens of small organisations.
the exciting opportunities here will evolve into something new that will enhance the online presence for the city. You’re clearly a big advocate for the city, which has culminated in a role in council, what are some of the key areas you’re passionate about in terms of the city’s ongoing development? I’ve grown to love being a part of the Christchurch story and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. I am now in a privileged position and am therefore able to access so many people and a lot of meaningful information about our city. But that comes with a huge responsibility. For me, success will be when people who live in our city fully share the excitement and see the same opportunities as I do. A major part of this is ensuring everyone regains a
tight emotional attachment to their city and is absolutely positive about why they are here. This is why I love being the Councillor for Central Christchurch because I believe by rebuilding a thriving city heart, by building confidence and opening pathways for positive development, anything can happen. Also, being a Generation Y, I love technology and all the wonderful applications this can have in city living. Smart Cities… it is a real, it is underway and it is coming. We will see such things as open source council data to free citywide public spaces wifi. Ultimately all these developments will help to create a liveable city; an aspirational dream maybe, but I truly believe that from the disaster of the earthquakes these are the opportunities we must take for our city.

A touch stone on a plinth, playful pops of colour as in the library’s striped squabs, local birdlife depicted in the atrium and exterior, all radiate beach life. Tokens of the old were retained. The former museum’s doors form a stately entrance to the ground floor community hub. The original foundation-stone lies adjacent to the new, and a war memorial roll reminds. Kauri trusses from the original community centre were repurposed as large communal tables in both upstairs and downstairs atriums – their smoothed surfaces to be weathered once again with a new history.

PRE-CONSTRUCTION – THE VITAL UNSEEN WORK Fraser Thomas is a team of engineers, surveyors and resource managers who seem to have a hand in everything happening in Christchurch and afar at the moment. “We do a lot of interesting, varied work, which the team enjoy,” Mason Reed, Director or Geotechnical Engineering and Christchurch Branch Manager of Fraser Thomas says.
T
he company has been busy undertaking earthquake damage assessments in Waiau, Mt Lyford and Kaikoura since recent events, and providing consultancy services for sites in Ashburton and Timaru, ranging from forensic engineering appraisals to design works for commercial building developments. The company also does land surveying relating to changing cross-leases to fee simple tenure and work in the early stages of new subdivisions – including preparing applications for subdivision consent. Their licensed cadastral surveyor, who is experienced in all topographical type surveying, is always busy. The team of environmental scientists have a lot of experience
in soil contamination assessments and more recently asbestos contamination assessments, which has been in high demand since the earthquakes. “We are a growing team. We are currently in need of a senior structural engineer. “There is a shortage of experienced Chartered structural engineers in New Zealand, largely due to the earthquakes and the demand from the Auckland building boom,” Reed says. The company may fly under the radar of us common folk, but behind the scenes Fraser Thomas has a hand in a variety of engineering and survey work that directly effects the developments where we build our homes or visit our new favourite places.

as speakers as they are in practice, their boldness purposed to “make architecture significant in daily life”. “Each design,” they say, “transforms a collage of influences into architecture that is beautiful and layered with meaning, but also welcoming—spaces and landscapes where people want to hang out.” You can hang out with them in Christchurch at their public talk at St Andrews College Chapel on Thursday 14th September 6pm. And as a bonus, the Chapel is a wonderful new work of architecture you’ll want to hang out in anyway. The Festival is designed to engage and inspire a wide audience, and to reinforce the message that Architecture Matters. Other highlights include seven Open Studios, (architects open their offices to the public to show how things really work in the engine room), two City Tours of recent developments in Cashel Street, and an exhibition of 3D artworks made by architects titled Parallel Practices Vol.2. This exhibition will be on throughout the festival, until September 17th at 65 Cambridge Terrace. Details for the remaining events can be found on the NZIA website – nzia.co.nz. All events are free and open to the public.

Enjoying working in partnership with some of the bigger commercial building companies, Scott says the challenges tend to come externally. “The bigger the project, the more it can be affected by changes in the political and economic climate around it.” Working closely with a group of builders such as Mike Greer Homes, Manager Anita Boyd says new-build residential work is a bit of a favourite for her, with the opportunities that come with a clean slate and participation in the design process with the client.

THE PROFESSIONAL PLASTERERS With a few accolades under his belt, and a strong team and work ethic, Glen Andrew is putting his Cladtech Plastering business on the rebuild map.
A
fter nearly four years in operation, he decided to keep Cladtech Plastering smaller in size – to keep the quality high and closely monitor progress. His talented crew include Aman the foreman and qualified plasterers Isaac, Andre and Tyler. Camila, the office manager, is also there for the clients. “For us is more about quality over quantity,” Glen says. With 20 years’ experience, Glen is on site, hands on, nearly every day, often even before the guys arrive. “I always make sure the project is completed perfectly –
otherwise I wouldn’t sleep at night!” The diversity in their skill set and experience means the team can turn their commercial hand to most projects – they were subcontracted to repair intricate plasterwork on a few of the Art Centre’s historic archways. “For the last two years, we’ve worked on over 100 units at Lady Wigram Retirement Village,” Glen says. “We were also subcontracted for the plastering and painting for Clearwater’s Modern Manor which won a Gold Award in last year’s Registered Master Builders House of Year.”
For all your plaster solutions...
Cladtech uses a company called Specialised, for Kiwi-made cladding systems and materials designed for futureproofing and the New Zealand environment. Although sought after for new builds for the domestic and commercial sector, Glen can plaster outdoor fireplaces, fences and do some repair work. Cladtech is also happy to go up to North Canterbury, over to the bays and down to Ashburton. Phone 021 08446463 visit www.cladtechplastering.co.nz or Facebook.

STONE A HEART OF
STONE PROFILES OFFER CLADDING DIVERSITY
The grandeur, real feel, and earthy look of rock cladding transforms a home’s architectural beauty.
E
ldorado has been the world’s biggest stone veneer manufacturer since 1969 and Hard as Rocks is New Zealand’s exclusive supplier. This lightweight, cost-effective solution creates the timeless look and elegance of stone features at up to half the price of the real thing. Today’s profiles are as diverse as they are in nature, from emulating the time-smoothed rocks of a Canterbury river bed through to an English-country farm wall. Uses go beyond front-of-house features or statement fireplaces, with creative practicalities anywhere inside and outside the home. Comparatively, competitors’ modular rock-look panelling screams artificial, and real stone carries impractical cost and weight. It is also easy to create a home owner’s own look by combining different stone profiles and coloured grouts. As the stone veneer is only 50mm thick, it is adhered to the wall piece by piece by a Hard as Rocks licensed applicator, with a sand and cement based adhesive. Most installations are on fibre cement board cladding over standard timber framing, but it can also be applied to concrete block and some brick and plaster applications. Hard as Rocks has had plenty of input in rebuilding Christchurch with hundreds of completed residential projects throughout Canterbury, showcasing the full range of profiles and products available. Customers can call Hard as Rocks for examples of the team’s work, in their own neighbourhood. NUMBER 13 NOT UNLUCKY FOR

The team won a basket-full again in 2017: with 13 awards comprising of nine gold, two silver, one category winner and one Outdoor Lifestyle Award.
By Rhonda Mitchell
Four golds have since been reclassified as ‘Gold Reserve’, qualifying the company for the National Master Build Awards. “The annual awards are an acknowledgement of the hard work that goes into every home we design and build. It’s great recognition for us and our clients,” says Richard McEwan, CEO at Mike Greer Homes. Gold awards were won for new homes, as well as showhomes designed and built by Mike Greer Homes. The design innovation and construction excellence was recognised across their branches in Canterbury, North Canterbury, Nelson, West Coast and Central Otago. Their gold winning showhome in Silverstream was also the category winner in the GIB Show Home category for the Canterbury region. Mike Greer Architectural achieved success in the New Home $1-2 million category (as well as an additional gold for the $2m+ category) for a stunning 535sqm character home in Merivale, the home which went on to win the Outdoor Lifestyle Award for Canterbury. With thirteen branches nationwide, Mike Greer Homes exhibits consistent quality and craftsmanship as recognised at the Registered Master Builder House of the Year awards. Although each region has unique housing demands and characteristics, Mike Greer Homes offers a consistent level of service and high construction standards that deliver on client needs. From affordable homes to stylish architectural builds, Mike Greer Homes continues to use their scale, expertise and experience to deliver more.

PREMIUM HOMES - HOUSE OF THE YEAR
HOTY GOLD FIRST-TIME ENTRANT WINS
By Rhonda Mitchell
Premium Homes has won a Canterbury Master Builders House of the Year Gold Award for its renovation of a house in Lyttelton.
D
irectors Kelly Wood and Andrew Breward are particularly pleased with this win because it is their first year of entry. As a Gold Award winner, the house now goes through to the national competition. Andrew says the 1960s-built house, that
included two later additions, required post-earthquake repair. On seeing the great bones and potential of the house, Andrew worked closely with the owners to not just reinstate, but to upgrade. The house received a new ensuite, improved insulation, double glazing and
new windows that better capture the view, straightened and strengthened framing as well as a reshaped roof profile. The once-adored original knotty pine ceilings are gone, and Andrew says the owners are so pleased they went with his advice to change them.

Both acknowledge the role of their subcontractors. “We have been established a long time with the same subcontractors, who are striving for the level of perfection which has helped win the award,” Andrew says. Caring about products used, Premium Homes study all the options to find the best deal and performance and, they say, it’s not always about the big brand names. Kelly says that after a great deal of research and practical experience, Premium Homes has become an expert in passive and ecohouses. The team believes New Zealand homes have not changed dramatically for many years and passive homes are the way forward. Premium Homes is working hard to get clients to recognise the benefits of airtight products and thermal efficiencies, calculating how much extra passive thermal and energy efficient features people can have for their budgets. “We are passionate about getting standards above the minimum building code requirements,” Kelly says. “And in fact, our next entry in the House of the Year competition is likely to feature in the Innovation and Technology section.” Andrew says they are totally flexible on changes to plans, they work harder for clients because they are passionate
about what they do. They don’t build cookie cutter-style from pre-existing plans, they work on budget, size, wish lists, and energy efficiency. “We work with our clients to get the best mix.” There is a consultant available to work with clients on the look of the finished house – how the colours and finish textures will work together, plus the appliances and fittings. They find some clients struggle to visualise the finished house at the time that they need to make design choices and the consultant can ensure the result is cohesive and aesthetically pleasing. You can see the work of Premium Homes on You Tube.
AFTER SEEING THE GREAT POTENTIAL OF THE HOUSE, THE DECISION WAS MADE NOT JUST TO REINSTATE, BUT TO UPGRADE.

“WE ARE A BOUTIQUE BUILDING COMPANY, SMALL BY DESIGN.”
T
he 136sqm design of the latter is versatile – the plans can be adapted to face north on almost any site for solar gain keeping the interior light, warm and comfortable. With three bedrooms, two bathrooms and open plan living, it is a beautiful first home with all the add ons: an ensuite with on-trend honeycomb tiles and a walk-in robe, with a laundry that boasts a tonne of storage. Clever design means the vaulted ceilings create an abundant feeling of space in the main living area, while the built-in window seat feigns connection between inside and out. The wraparound deck does the same, creating a desire to regularly step out on a whim. The exterior look of timber cladding that is light in colour flows inside, with a similar hue used as interior flooring. The contrasting dark gable roof and joinery is bold, making the houses colour palette catch the eye. SC Projects Director Steve Cliff believes the company’s success is due in large part to the fact that he and his team are
realistic about timing and never overcommit. “We are a boutique building company, small by design.” In 2015, they won gold in the ‘Builders Own Home’ Canterbury. “The guys like
nothing better than tackling a challenging build, but are equally adept at building a standard family home that will stand the test of time,” Cliff says. Their folio of work offers the perfect mix of both.
Congratulations to Steve Cliff on Winning the House of the Year award for this SC Project.

HONEYBONE BUILDERS - HOUSE OF THE YEAR
MAMMOTH FROM MICRO TO
DOUBLE GOLD AWARDS AT OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE SPECTRUM By Allison O’Neill
No strangers to House of The Year awards, Honeybone Builders won two more in 2017.
ONE PLUS HOMES A new way of living

One Plus Homes create beautiful, flexible, architecturally designed modular homes. Built for Kiwi living.
T
he first, a new home in the $1-2 million category that is grand and angular like a ship, is positioned to make the most of the amazing outlook of Banks Peninsula. Of its three decks: one gives the sensation of being on a ship’s bow, one provides a sheltered space for barbecues and the third is a luxury given that it leads off the home office. The second win is quite the opposite: sweet and petite, a 42sqm design of one bedroom (a walk-in wardrobe not forgotten), one bathroom and one living. This simple but smart abode is a baby of One Plus Homes – a division of Honeybone Builders which creates architecturally designed modular homes, putting homeownership in reach of those wanting to get on the ladder. In the case of this gold winning home, its owner is a young woman who used her Kiwisaver to purchase her first home. One Plus Homes use space inventively, the high ceilings give a feeling spaciousness and clients get choices regarding kitchen, bathroom, cladding and roofing options. Honeybone Builders is adept at blending modern building materials and techniques with the traditional. “Many of our projects use the traditional looks of stone and natural timbers weaved in with modern steel, glass, fibre boards and foam cladding. “We believe in attention to detail and extracting the maximum value for our clients – building to a modest budget should not constrain the quality of the finished result,” explains Owner of Honeybone Builders, Brian Honeybone. Christchurch is lucky to have this entrepreneurial husband and wife team that delivers homes from the micro to the mammoth and producing winners at both ends of the spectrum.

category. With a focus on traditional design, the three-bedroom bungalow was built using recycled rimu flooring from the earthquake-damaged home it replaced. Featuring macrocarpa architraves and skirtings, and cedar weatherboards, the home opens out onto a beautiful macrocarpa deck. A unique loft room with ladder-style stairs sits above the garage and the north-facing open plan living/dining/ kitchen area captures plenty of sun. With a strong focus on thermal efficiencies, the home is insulated throughout with a double cross laminated natural wool blanket and the low-E thermal glazing combined with noise control internal walls makes for a cosy, peaceful abode indeed. The second entry, a four-bedroom two-storey home in Papanui, won a gold in the $700,000 - $1m category. It also won the overall in this category out of 15 entries, 10 of which were golds. Working alongside the client’s own architect, the project presented ground engineering challenges, which were alleviated by a unique Armidillo re-levelable concrete foundation floor system. With a strong Scandanavian design influence on the overall aesthetics of the house, the owner subdivided the section and built the home to replace an earthquake damaged one on the other half of the site. ohn believes this entry won because the judges could not fault the house. “It’s down to design functionality and then how well it is executed. The devil is in the detail and the workmanship on site was outstanding.” The house on Mt Pleasant won four other awards: Bathroom, Kitchen, Workmanship, and House over $2 million. John acknowledges the role of Architect Chris Dewere, saying nothing is ever left to chance, everything is so well thought out. “Plus, it was a fantastic team effort from our builders and subcontractors on site.” John’s favourite part is the award-winning kitchen, spacious with an excellent layout, it includes a beautiful wine cellar. The kitchen opens on to the lounge which in turn introduces a sheltered deck with a barbeque and fireplace, and is wrapped around by fabulous views across the city. John Creighton Builders has won quite a few awards over the years: as well as the Supreme award three times, the team has come away with gold awards most years and renovation awards too. John says the awards give clients confidence that they’ve got a great team with a proven track record. They are looking forward to making more clients very happy, with some special projects to enter House of the Year next year.

he company’s Rhodes Street project received a Gold, Overall Category Winner and Gold Reserve Award for the new ‘Multi Unit and Apartment’ Category, the Merivale House received a Gold Award for ‘House $700k - $1 million’ category, and the Prestons Apartment received a Silver Award for ‘House $450k - $550k’. Company Director Peter de Gouw says the Rhodes Street project is an example of outstanding contemporary architecture. Utilising a number of exterior claddings, it is beautifully designed to fit on the narrow site. The apartments include clever features such as removable glass balustrading to the entry stairway, which takes the stress out of moving large items. The homeowners love living there and have people knocking on their front doors, keen to know about the designers and builders. The Merivale House follows a black and white theme with crisp clean exterior appeal. Louvres to the upstairs windows offer not only privacy on a busy site, but respite from direct sun. The house features great flow to the outdoors and alfresco
Merivale Home spaces are designed for everyday enjoyment and entertaining. It is a highly specified home that includes a stunning kitchen. Prestons is one of seven apartments, making its Silver win in the House
category even more special. Sun and views are captured by large, north-facing glassed walls, while lightweight concrete plastered panels and dark painted weatherboards make for a high-impact, low maintenance exterior.

A hat-trick of
WINNING HOMES
A ground-breaking building company has produced a home with three things in mind – efficiency, affordability and sustainability. And the three awards it has won reflects these principles.
usion Homes took home a hat trick of prizes in the Canterbury 2017 Registered Master Builder of the Home of the Year Awards. Director Chris Haughey demonstrated all the things he is passionate about when building his own beachside home in Christchurch. Deservedly, it was the Lifestyle award winner for sustainability in the builder’s own home category for its use of sustainable materials with minimal lifecycle costs, such as natural timber cladding, stone features, solar panels, an Onduline roof using organic recycled paper, UPVC windows, and the highest possible rating for insulation using NZFoam and mechanical ventilation. Additionally, the house achieved a silver award in this category. This warm family home, behind the impressive upcycled antique door, has clever functional flow making it feel larger than its 133sqm - with the master bedroom leading out to the expansive Kwila decking. A grand concrete kitchen bench, wrought iron and stone features, printed-glass doors and slate titles are some of its rustic and contemporary creativity, inside and out – and there is nothing to tip the budget. Fusion Homes was also awarded bronze in the Canterbury New Home $550,000 to $700,000 category for its use of quality materials, leadingedge construction techniques and its energy efficiency. Spaciousness and beautiful aesthetics impressed, but most noteworthy was the constant warm, comfortable temperature. Visit www.fusionhomes.co.nz, or phone 0800 238 746.

HILLVIEW CONSTRUCTION - HOUSE OF THE YEAR
HILLSIDE SPECIALIST REACHES THE TOP In its first year of entry, Hillview Construction is delighted to win three awards at the Canterbury Master Builders House of the Year competition.
T
he City Centre house won Gold, Gold Reserve, and Category Winner for the ‘House $550k $700k’ category, and goes through to the New Zealand-wide competition. Its fresh and light plaster panel cladding sits beneath pitched heritage tray roofing and red aluminium composite panels are a design highlight, as is the glazed floating staircase. Director Shaun Campbell’s home on Mount Pleasant won a Silver Award in the ‘Builder’s Own Home’ category. Ultra-modern, the house features an expansive stairwell leading to a mezzanine floor overlooking the dining area, double height ceilings and designer lighting. Shaun employs his house as a private show home. Clients can come up and see new and designer products in situ, while Sean can guarantee their functionality and quality. “Clients love to visit at night to experience the lighting, while more quirky features such as the automatic lawnmower provide inspiration and food for thought,” he says. Together with its work on the flat, Hillview has a focus on hill and architectural houses. Shaun is passionate about building on the hills, loving the

challenge of a rocky site, unpredictable winds, and where the detailing and finishing is truly difficult to do. he base of the winning bathroom is a moody backdrop of charcoal tiles. Layered atop are the sharp clean lines formed by the contemporary Corian basin and plinth, a wall-hung timber vanity and large mirrored cabinets, which provide in practicality, more specifically, with excellent storage. The tap ware is a feature in dramatic black. Backlighting the cabinets reinforces the sense that the bathroom is a series of floating layered elements. According to judges, Sutton’s design featured a lovely composition of colours with clean lines, timber accents and strong, sculptural form. A kitchen project in Wanaka delivered ‘Detail by Davinia Sutton’ the Supreme Kitchen Design of the Year Runner Up accolade also. The strongly veined marble bench top and splash back are eye-catching and elegant, contrasting with the rawness of the concrete bench top that is the island. Dark timber cabinetry and flooring deepen the mix further. Slatted louvres above the overhead cabinets conceal a heating system. “This meant we didn’t need to have steel grills interfering with the kitchen ‘money shot’. The louvres also add texture,” while building those structured layers that come so naturally to Sutton. A large and light scullery houses a second set of appliances and plenty of storage. Also awarded in 2017: Certified Designers Society Best Bathroom Design and Best Kitchen Design, Canterbury Region Best Bathroom and Best Kitchen. Davinia and her team are having a major impact on the style of New Zealand’s kitchens and bathrooms.

WRAP-AROUND KITCHEN WINS OVER JUDGES Vicki Andrews, kitchen designer at Vicki Andrews Design, is pleased to win the “Classic Kitchen” category at the 2017 National Kitchen and Bathroom Awards.
“G
reat design is not about the current fleeting fashion in fittings and materials,” Vicki says. “The kitchen has to work within the space, blend with the style of the home and meet the client’s needs.” Her winning kitchen’s client brief detailed a “classic kitchen with a modern slant, both practical and visually stunning”. The client requested a space additional to the kitchen for baking, preserving, and preparation work, and a separate coffee and drinks area, resulting in a partially divided off scullery with two sinks, a dishwasher, additional ovens and plenty of bench space. Extensive lighting highlights the kitchen’s details and brings the kitchen dramatically to life after dark. The result is superb. With more than 25 years in the industry as independent designer and a multiple award winner, Vicki says the more information she has from a client in the brief the better, “because a kitchen is a very personal thing”. Information that Vicki requests from clients can include how they live, their family size, the house style, past kitchen annoyances, passions for cooking or entertaining, any special requirements for separate areas such as a bar or coffee making space, and of course preferences for colours, materials and textures. The outcome is a bespoke kitchen that has been thoughtfully and carefully designed to suit each client and the space. Blended materials and design features result in a kitchen that is very workable, timeless and stunning.

F3 DESIGN - ADNZ
DESIGN BOX THINKING OUTSIDE THE
Lyttelton Landing is an ingenious use of space, design and mementos of Christchurch past.
“I
spent 80 per cent of the time dreaming,” Architectural Designer Pippin Wright-Stow says of the build process for his functional family home. It is a residential rendition of the Madras Street ArtBox design, with both utilising his adaptable modular Boxus system. Every part of the beguiling 66sqm home, with an additional office space for F3 Design under the carport, is an intrigue of sustainable minimalist creativity. It is well deserved of the joint win in the ADNZ Canterbury Awards in the under-150sqm category and also residential interior winner. Consistent warmth from heatedwater pipes radiates from the concrete floor. The front door, from the old Christchurch Woman’s hospital, is painted nautically-inspired ‘Renew’ and allows a jaw-dropping view through the home down to Lyttelton’s port. Faded-turquoise corrugated iron from the original garage becomes the
kitchen splashback and wall-coverings in the sumptuous-sized bathroom, with its exposed-copper piping, and a surgeon’s basin and taps – also rescued from the hospital. Pippin says no one can have all the ideas, so he worked closely with the construction team from Port Hills Smith & Sons, figuring out practical solutions to inventive concepts. “I enjoyed the collaborative environment,” says builder Anthony Bown, who embraces challenging sights such as this 24-degree slope. Box steel forms tree-like foundation posts, load-bearing the steel-framed structure of horizontal and vertical Douglas Fir timber panels, and minicorrugated steel. “Pippin is certainly the master of the upcycle,” he says. Even the veges grow in a row of recycled pipes from the port – nothing is ordinary here. Visit www.f3design.co.nz and www.smithandsonsporthills.co.nz.

BOB BURNETT ARCHITECTURE - ADNZ
TIMELESS DESIGN MEETS HIGH PERFORMANCE Bob Burnett has been in the architecture industry for over thirty years. For nearly twenty of those he has operated his own firm, Bob Burnett Architecture. In 2000, architect Shizuka Yasui joined the firm and together they have created numerous award winning designs for a diverse range of projects.
A
t this year’s ADNZ/Resene Architectural Design Awards, Bob Burnett Architecture won the Residential New Home Between 150m2 and 300m2 category. Tucked into the upper slopes of Banks Peninsula, the winning house is a Frank
Lloyd Wright-inspired, three-bedroom, two-bathroom, environmentally sound home with spectacular views of the Akaroa Harbour. Although conceptualised in 2005, the timeless design was built much later, with updated specifications aligned with
current high-performance standards which far exceed building code minimums. This includes thicker, super-insulated walls, high-performance windows and an edge insulated concrete floor. Recycled timber has been utilised, including macrocarpa milled from trees on site. The arrangement and flow is efficient and spatially aware, with the carefully considered openings inviting views and enhancing the use of natural light. Bob’s philosophy is to create delightful living while optimising performance and value. Solar and passive design are pivotal to this. He has championed energyefficient, environmentally sound design for nearly two decades. A certified Homestar Assessor, he designed and developed New Zealand’s first 10 Star Homestar built rated homes – one of which was commended in the Residential Compact New Home – up to 150m2 Architectural Design category. The momentum from this helped launch the SUPERHOME Movement which is a not-for-profit, industry-led initiative aiming to normalise high performance homes, dispel myths in the building industry and challenge the code minimum status quo. Bob Burnett Architecture is focused on creating cleverly detailed, healthy, beautiful homes that are inspiring and have net zero energy use. See www.bbarc.co.nz for more information and beautifully designed superhomes.

COMPACT HOME COMMENDED Urban Function Architecture was Highly Commended at the Architectural Designers New Zealand Awards in the ‘Residential Compact Home up 150 square metres’ category, for its Soleares Avenue design.
A
aron Jones, Project Designer, says the concept was a high performance small home: it has thicker wall framing, extra bracing, extra insulation and high energy efficiency. The materials are high quality but value for money. “Architecture is responding to a shift in thinking about space and cost efficiency,” Aaron says. The floor system bears this out, being a crosslaminated timber system that went down in only 1.5 hours. Engineered to cross longer spans, it requires fewer piles – cost effective in itself, but doubling its value when used on a rocky hill site. The knotty pine floor, reminiscent of a DoC hut, and the knotty cedar cladding system, are 50 per cent of the cost of high grade timbers. Further, there is honesty in the structure being the finish material. The client wanted a strong connection with nature: the rooms capture all the different views; the windows are arranged to frame the planting outside, and outside comes in as the cladding returns into the entry area of the house. Aaron acknowledges builders SC Projects executed the design perfectly; the building firm also won two Golds at the NZMB House of the Year Awards, both of them Urban Function designs. The future is exciting for Urban as community project – the Spencer Park Surf Life Saving Club – is just two months from completion. A passive house, a micro home and various technical hillside projects are all on the drawing board.

“L
ike most homes of that era, it had good bones,” says Jason Higham of Higham Architecture in Rangiora. The task was to renovate the home, keeping the existing footprint. At just 119sqm, clever use of space was required. “The layout of the rooms was disjointed, and there was little regard for sun or flow to outdoor living.” Jason’s renovation design for the home was the winner of the 2017 ADNZ/Resene Architectural Design Award in the Residential Additions and Alterations category. Modern, open plan living was important and the relocation of the kitchen was key. Integrated kitchen, dining and living areas created an increased sense of space. An existing porch became part of the interior floor space, and the bathroom got a makeover. Being environmentally responsible is important to Jason. Waste is minimised, exemplified, in this case, in the feature wall that extends over the dining area. All that timber came from the existing house in some form.
LIKE MOST HOMES OF THAT ERA, IT HAD GOOD BONES. Jason chose local builder Grant Shadbolt to complete the work. “We know him personally, so with that comes a high level of trust. He is a joiner as well, so we knew he had the ability to construct all our custom cabinetry and wall panelling.” Careful selection of products and materials was crucial to ensure a healthy living environment was created. Such care is the hallmark of Higham Architecture projects. See www.highamarchitecture.co.nz for more examples of Jason’s multi awardwinning designs.

CYMON ALLFREY ARCHITECTS- ADNZ
AN AWARD-WINNING PANORAMA The transformation of a weathered, two-storey building into a modern, mixed-use apartment and commercial complex, and a striking new hillside house were winners for Cymon Allfrey Architects at the recent ADNZ/Resene Architectural Design Awards
“T
he narrative for the home nestled high on the Port Hills was directed by the site’s panoramic views and evolved from the concept of a leaf lying on a flat surface. “The risk with a large footprint home is that it gets in the way of itself,” explains Cymon Allfrey, who co-designed the 300m2 new build with his colleague Don Roy. “We had to channel the wide, panoramic views. To achieve this, our idea was for the home to terrace down the hillside as a single-level home, like a leaf on a flat surface, allowing pockets of
space around and below it.” The use of three separate compartments with dynamic volumes creates a character that cannot be achieved with level square lines. “This formed interesting spaces and perspectives throughout the home and allowed views set up on a hierarchy basis.” The home’s colour palette and natural finishes reflect the surrounding semi-rural landscape. Set amongst volcanic rock and wild tussock, many of the retaining materials used were sourced from or close to the extensive site.
The stunning abode – which was constructed by Trevor Hone Builders – was recently named best Residential New Home in the over 300m2 category at the annual Canterbury Westland Regional ADNZ/Resene Architectural Design Awards. “Our co-designing process combines our different perspectives,” Cymon says of the architectural duo behind the designs. “Don brings freedom in his thinking and I bring a bit of rigour, this gives us the opportunity to fully explore our ideas to their full potential.”
We congratulate Cymon Allfrey on his ADNZ Residential New Home Architectural Design Award

BARRY CONNOR DESIGN - ADNZ
T
he house is nestled amongst an eclectic array of bachstyle homes that typify the architectural language of the small coastal enclave. Barry says this modern interpretation of a classic beach house is filled with light and provides for generous entertaining on lazy summer nights. The main living area was positioned to allow for all-day sun and oriented for natural morning light to the master bedroom. The spaces are compact, yet functional and the light-filled staircase at the heart of the design was created to allow a sense of space on a relatively modest footprint. Strong and simple forms blending with a basic palate of vertical profile steel and plywood sheet cladding reference the typical local construction. Barry is pleased to share credit for his win with Gareth Davis Builders, Kristen Reid Design for the kitchen, and with photographer Denis Radermacher. A man for all seasons, Barry enjoys working in any style or material, and in all environments: city, rural, coastal, hill or flat. However, his key principles of all-day sun and light-filled homes are non-negotiable, and are the first consideration on visiting a site. Barry says an interesting location gets him absorbed in solving any problems with design. He aims for “thoughtprovoking designs, intriguing architecture that is never run of the mill”. Samples of his work can be viewed at www.barryconnordesign.co.nz

NZ FOAM
FOAM INSULATION’S INCREASING PROFILE To enjoy a warm, dry house, that stays that way without spending a bomb on heating, was the determination of Chris Haughey, Director of NZ Foam.
H
e researched the market and discovered the obvious answer lay in what had been used overseas since the 1960s – foam insulation. And it’s still the preferred option in many countries. In fact, it is one the oldest insulating products in New Zealand – it had just been overlooked in recent times. Chris says he was frustrated with the inconsistent performance of the fiberglass and wool products on the market. He knew there had to be something else that performed more efficiently. “Just because a product has been a mainstream choice, doesn’t mean it’s the most effective,” he says. “On the contrary, it’s proof of performance that should be the decisive factor. And it needs to be economically viable for the lifetime of the product.” NZ Foam has 20 years’ experience, but since the Christchurch rebuild, its insulation has increased in popularity ten-fold. NZ Foam is also happy to work with builders and architects for renovations and new builds.
The orange foam is sprayed on and then it quickly dries hard, so there are no gaps or open corners, and it will not move or sag. “And it never needs replacing as it lasts the life of the building – its lifecycle cost is zero,” Chris says. “We confidently guarantee our product for 25 years.”
FOAM INSULATION HAS INCREASED IN POPULARITY TEN-FOLD POST-QUAKE. It can be applied in 25mm to over 150mm in thickness, dependent on the area and requirements. It is suitable for ceilings, walls and it keeps out the moisture and dampness under wooden floorboards. Made from recyclable materials such as plastic bottles and 20 per cent sustainable soy-based oil, the foam is completely self-extinguishing and lives up to Codemark industry standards in fire safety (DS1366.1). Once sprayed on, the product
is inert and chemically stable. There is no formaldehyde present and no off-gassing after 24 hours. “It has the highest thermal R-values on the market,” Chris says. “Which means a temperature-controlled environment by keeping warm air inside the home. Equally, it helps keep out the sun’s heat during summer. Passive heating and cooling properties are energy saving – therefore it will eventually pay for itself by keeping costs down.” Rob Leach, NZ Foam’s operation manager leads a highly skilled team which can work on projects, both commercial and residential, throughout the country. “By association, NZ Foam was an awardwinner in this year’s Canterbury Registered Master Builder House of the Year awards, for its contribution in providing a measurably warm and dry home,” Chris says. “People now have options. There is a new way to insulate – and the new word is orange.” Visit www.nzfoam.co.nz or phone 0800 693 626.
