CITY’S COLOURFUL

NEW HEART For some of us the central city has been a place best avoided for several years, but that behaviour has to change if we are to avoid a great big dose of FOMO this spring.

T

he long and concerted effort with the civic defibrillators has paid off. “The heart of the city is starting to beat again,” says Colliers International Retail Property Manager Andrew Barclay. The BNZ Centre is a delicious melange of food, retail, and commercial space that is begging for exploration. “If you looked at this one development alone you could see that the fabric of the city is coming back together,” Andrew says. The project is centred around a sheltered public greeting, meeting and eating space, the colourful hub of the laneways fanning out from it and linking the square to the surrounding streets. The yield from the huge array of food outlets – Robert Harris, New York Deli, Wendys Milk Bar, Mumbai Wallah, Hachi Hachi, Burger Fuel, Pita Pit, Little Brews Espresso, Tank Juice, The Sushi Company and Wendy’s Hamburgers – can be eaten al fresco. Small and specialty stores have found a home, with the lanes hosting Simply New Zealand, Scorpio Books, Death by Denim, Loose Change, Hair Co and Beauty, Royal Nail, Riccarton Florist, Davis Bridal and Taking Shape. For your tech needs there’s 2 Degrees, Spark and Omnitech. Unichem Pharmacy, Michael Hill Jeweller and Repertoire are there, and Andrew says the recent opening of H&M at the Crossing, plus the three new Terrace bars shows that critical mass is coming back to the central city.

ith Canterbury Fashion Week next week, and our latest cover a fashionable nod to what we can expect from this year's show, I've been thinking quite a lot about the subject. Generating billions of dollars per annum in New Zealand, fashion is the untameable beast at the heart of consumer culture. The chameleon like nature of the industry keeps loyalists to 'what's hot and what's not' on their toes, and leaves the rest of us who consider ourselves a 'work in progress' rather perplexed. All of this 'threads and kicks' talk has inspired some nostalgic and rather cringeinducing memories for me as I reflect on my style – or rather unstylish evolution. It would be difficult to determine which of the styles I donned as a kid of the eighties and nineties eras deserves the 'most heinous' fashion faux pas title. My obsession with unflattering fabrics; oversized, wideleg jeans, and tie-dye leggings with slouch socks spring to mind as does a denim 'cowgirl' styled dress covered in sequins, which I picked up second-hand shopping with my Mum and wore to the point of its extinction. That was a sad day in our household. I also can't forget the pink, patent leather heels that my friend and I wore on Your work is going to fill a large part of your life; the only way girls' nights out. My preoccupation with heeled shoes (no longer the case these to be truly satisfied isinto what youthe believe great work days) factdo started at around age of sixis when I begged my parents for my 'clip clops'. I stillis vividly remember whenyou they took and the only way own to pair do ofgreat work to love what do”me – to buy them. I think I probably insisted on sleeping in them such was the love of these $20 Steve Jobs white, pointed heels with bows on. The interesting thing about a lot of the styles we have banished to the back of our minds/wardrobes is that they find themselves back in vogue when style hey say start asroyalists you mean to In a day and time when words decide to give them a second wind. finish. EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

T

Consideration was given to waxing lyrical about my love of writing, my proclivity towards strong imagery and content generation. And yet, although such sentiments are certainly accurate, the desire to impart something more meaningful than cliché rhetoric was simply too strong. Metropol captures imaginations and inspires a city in a way which is rarely seen. It has, after all, been doing it for almost 20 years.

Kate Pierson

Although beautiful imagery plays an integral role in this, we’re so much more than a pretty face. Engaging, thought-provoking and just plain enjoyable content has become a mainstay of the Metropol brand, as developed and curated most recently by Kate Pierson, who leaves very big – and very stylish – shoes to fill. I look forward to continuing to create just that. Thankfully, I too love what I do.

FAMILY ENVIRONMENT

Fitzroy of Merivale is a boutique rest home located just 100 steps from Merivale Mall. One of very few privately owned rest homes, its Owners Daryn and Vanessa Pirie are active within the home daily. “We really get to know the residents and their families in our unique family environment,” Vanessa Pirie says.

We get to know the residents and their families in our unique family environment.”

“M

ost of our staff have been with us a long time and provide dedicated care, more intimate than in larger facilities. This makes the transition to their new home with us a smooth one.” Due to the boutique size of a 30 guest maximum, residents develop a trusting relationship with the multi-disciplinary team of highly skilled health-care

professionals, all of whom are engaged in on-going training and professional development. There is warmth and comfort in the home; a security in knowing needs are met by an engaged team member. The cosy environment offers good food, company and a full programme of activities. A number of rooms have a direct view across the main lawn, gardens and

entranceway, and all enjoy access to their own private courtyard or garden. A clear paved pathway meanders around the entire facility, through perfumed gardens, around mature rhododendrons. Believing dining should always be an enjoyable experience, white tablecloths, linen serviettes and intimate dining room table settings are the norm. As are celebrations – their third resident has just turned 100 and a lively, festive Mid Winter Christmas event was also a recent good time. “We are always looking for new friends to share our beautiful home,” says one resident. A local affectionate “adopted” cat happily obliges this statement with its regular presence.

sustainability The beauty of

Ethique’s clever beauty bars haven’t compromised on their luxurious nature (beauty) or the scientific nature (brains) behind their creation. So much so, it seems almost unfair on their highly packaged rivals. It has struck a commercial chord, not only with those seeking to lower their product packaging and those seeking natural products, but Ethique also manages to capture those who seek luxury and beauty en masse. Metropol talks to Brianne about producing products and capturing imaginations.

How did your commercial journey begin? Ethique began in my kitchen back in October 2012 and whilst I always had in the back of my mind this idea of creating a global organisation that ‘rid the world of plastic bottles’, I had no real idea how to achieve that. Ethique became a proper company in my mind when we moved into our first premises – a tiny 93sqm factory unit. That was when investors and staff started to come on board. Before then it was just Helen and myself in our homes, making, packing and sending out bars.

B

rains, brawn and beauty are three of the most coveted characteristics and ones which are often seen as only existing in isolation. And yet, not only is Ethique (French for ‘ethical’ and pronounced Eh-tique) Founder and Managing Director Brianne West in possession of all three, she has singlehandedly conceptualised a commercial entity which too personifies these three desirable qualities.

Can you tell us about the core philosophy of your brand? Obviously Ethique’s purpose is to encourage as many people as possible to #giveupthebottle and move to using solid products instead of liquid, to curb the ridiculous use of plastic bottles around the world. But beyond that, we aim to operate as ethically as possible; from sourcing biodegradable, sustainably produced ingredients, ensuring our supply chain is palm and child labour free, paying our team a living wage and working with producers around the world to ensure they are paid a fair price for their products.

Where do you draw inspiration from for new products and flavour combinations? Often delicious flavours from nature. For example, our limited edition launch party bar is going to be pink (as our logo is pink.) So we looked for a beautiful natural ingredient that shared a similar colour and smelt delicious. We settled on pink grapefruit with a twist of vanilla which is such a divine combination. In regards to new products, I am forever looking for new products that need disrupting. I have a list about 30 products long that I intend to formulate but it’s a long process from concept to production so it’ll take me awhile to get through them. Our customers send through loads of ideas too which is fantastic. They can’t all be done, but I give each idea serious thought. How does a day in your life look these days? There is no typical day which is exactly how I like it. Currently we are preparing for a capital raise, so it’s more frenetic than usual with lots of paperwork and legal requirements, alongside pitch practise and reaching out to potential investors. Ordinarily I spend a lot of time answering emails, interviews or the phone, but I get to spend a good chunk of my time spreading the word about Ethique through various speaking engagements and events. I’m very lucky that I get to travel pretty extensively too now, mostly to Australia and the USA as we build our brand in these markets. I don’t get a lot of time in the lab as they are so busy with mass production, but I do usually spend at least one weekend day tinkering around with new formulations or improving existing products. I’m working on a whole new range which is really quite different to anything we’ve ever released, so I’m very excited about that! Ethique has struck a global chord, what do you put its success down to? A unique idea; solving a legitimate problem with a compelling story. We listen to our customers and strive to be as transparent and authentic as possible.

What are some of your proudest professional milestones? There have been so many amazing moments and achievements, it’s hard to pick one or two. Certainly one of them is our successful crowdfunding raise – we raised $200,000 in under 10 days through Pledgeme, which was pretty incredible. Other days I look back fondly on are when we featured in Forbes, the Huffington Post and other international media in July last year. And of course, when Britney Spears gave us a shout out on Facebook!

“I’m working on a whole new range which is really quite different to anything we’ve ever released.”

“Many of us have been left frustrated and tired. But it’s time to smell the roses again.” 14 September 28, 2017 Metropol

e are an innovative bunch in Canterbury with a population that is constantly coming up with initiatives to make our city ever better, Hooper says. The quakes have opened up new possibilities, throwing open the question of what our city could be like, and what new amenity it could possess. While we collectively experienced grief and disruption, the silver lining is the creative input our city has experienced since, he believes. Ideas are flowing in on a weekly, if not daily, basis to ChristchurchNZ. “Cantabrians have faced economic challenges, and many of us have been left frustrated and tired. But it’s time to smell the roses again; to look at the amazing living on offer here now that amenity has and is increasingly returning to us.” So what are our lifestyle pluses here in Aotearoa’s biggest southern city? Tom doesn’t hesitate. “They’re everywhere you look. We have relatively affordable housing. We have amazingly beautiful outdoor options as a result of our geography of the alps, sea, central riverways, and Banks Peninsula.” Hooper cites the fact we are both the oldest and newest city in New Zealand. Environmentally, we’re on the starting blocks to become an urban rolemodel, because we’ve been able to add extra cycleways, and biking is so much more of a viable transport option in a predominantly flat metropolis. “We’ve also futureproofed and planned for infrastructure needed to charge up many more electric cars, right in the CBD. Plus, we now boast so many strong new buildings with all of the design features and allied car-parking and lifts required for the elderly and the disabled. If accessibility was somewhat lacklustre before, it’s not now.” Hooper is excited about Christchurch’s renewed artistic vibe which started soon after the quakes with ‘Life in Vacant Spaces,’ and the ‘Ministry of Awesome.’ “It was arts entrepreneurship from a new generation of talent, giving our city impetus to be creative and cool. We have an edgier, quirkier and younger profile as a result.” And talking youth, the new Worsley Spur bike park was, prePort Hills fires, so popular that it proved the demand was indeed there (even for non-youth!). “Lots of exciting things and new initiatives for Christchurch are on the cusp of happening right now,” he says. “Central city markets are a top feature of our city’s rebirth. The highly successful container mall is morphing into something equally fabulous. How many cities have a true high-end farmer’s market in the absolute centre?” Hooper sees this, coupled with the beautiful river waterfront adjacent, as a game-changer for our city’s attractiveness. “Once the (Oxford Terrace) ‘Terraces’ are completed and buzzing with cafés and laneways, and the East Frame is full of architecturally interesting housing and residents, the CBD will fizz with even more energy. The sum total equals a superlative pad to call ‘home’.”

Featuring international and New Zealand based artists, it fearlessly explores how altruism, cheating and group formation influence society in unexpected ways. Power, persuasion, coercion and reconciliation are explored through the use of language with a profound reflection on markets that valorise certain forms of labour and the traumatic effects of language within histories of inequitable power relations.

GREAT JOURNEYS

They were a pretty dynamic outfit already, but the team at Travel 2U say they are now even more formidable. “We’re delighted that Sandra Toland and Bruce Harris, formerly of YOU Travel Tower Junction, have joined us,” according to Andrew and Michele Fibbens, and John and Marie Kottier, Directors of independently owned company Travel 2U.

“S

andra and Bruce bring with them exceptional skills and expertise from many years being involved in the travel industry. We’re very fortunate that they appreciate our distinctive way of operating and wanted to contribute their considerable talents to growing our brand.” Sandra and Bruce have been business partners for some 30 years. They have extensive travel knowledge and a passion for helping clients design wonderful and

adventurous experiences around the world. “We especially like the fact Travel 2 U share the same philosophy as ourselves in respect of clients, many of whom have become friends over the years,” Sandra and Bruce comment. “It’s such a relaxed environment here where clients are made to feel welcome from the moment they walk through the front door. We sit down with them on comfortable couches in a relaxed living-

room environment, cup of tea or coffee in hand and chat about their travel ideas and plans. “Then our expertise kicks into gear designing the perfect holiday specifically tailored to their needs, with some personal touches along the way. Working with an enthusiastic, mature and experienced leisure team of Linda and Natalie, whose ethos and mind-set are parallel, we know we’ve got it right.” This approach results in many repeat clients for Travel 2U, believing the company has a genuine interest in them and will create a truly memorable trip. While Travel 2U is a specialist in designing and escorting small group experiences, Sandra and Bruce will concentrate on working with independent travellers to bring together their personalised unique holiday. “We do the work so all our clients need to do is, sit back, relax and savour the joy of the journey.” You’ll find Travel 2U at 47 Birmingham Drive, Middleton – phone (03) 338 1222.

ith its cult street appeal, this amour of cool is a jack of all fashionable trades; toughen up a floral dress or pull together a chic, all-black ensemble, it’s all about adding a bit of exterior edge to an otherwise easy-going look. But the cool, calm and collected nature of this style chameleon doesn’t end there, with leather offering its talented hand to a range of embellishments from headbands and keyrings through to jewellery and watches. Your Beauty Countdown to Summer Yay! Spring is finally here and we are counting down the days until summer arrives.

E

veryone wants to look their best no matter what age they are. However, the beauty needs of someone in their twenties is going to be very different compared to someone in their eighties. All beauty treatments can be divided into four main categories – relax, restore, enhance and rejuvenate. It is very important to work out what is required by each individual so that they can have a personalised treatment to help them achieve the results they are wanting.

BEFORE

AFTER 90 DAYS

REJUVENATE Everyone can benefit from healthy looking skin and this can be achieved through IPL (Intense Pulsed Light to remove broken capillaries and age/sun spots from the skin), active at home skincare, in-clinic facial treatments such as facials, dermal stamping and V2 Skin Boosters.

RESTORE It’s also important to restore the natural contours – tighten the jowls and the lax skin of the face and neck with Ulthera and lift and restore cheek and facial volume with hyaluronic fillers.

RELAX The next step is to relax lines that are visible on the face such as frown, forehead and crow’s feet. This is done using Botulinum Toxin such as Botox or Dysport

ENHANCE Finally, some clients like to enhance their natural features with cheek and jaw definition and fuller lips and beautifully arched eyebrows.

At the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic, every treatment is tailored to the individual client and the results speak for themselves when happy clients look in the mirror and see a refreshed and rejuvenated face smiling back at them.

W

inter has finally retreated, skin rejoice! Until the sun drenched days arrive with the dawn of summer, fake it ‘til you make it to achieve that ever-sought after dewy glow. Its perfect companion is a bright lip, so pucker up and prepare yourself for the aesthetic perfection that Lauren and Louise is renowned for all-year round. Here are the beauty kit must-haves this spring so you can look on the bright side of life:

dewy skin never goes out of fashion

1.

2.

3.

1.

It’s all about the base: BB Cream (blemish balm) is an everyday hero when it comes to hydrating, covering flaws and providing the perfect canvas for foundation. It also contributes to the dewy aesthetic and can be worn on its own.

2.

The foundation of every great makeover: finding the right shade of foundation is essential. To create a dewy look, opt for a liquid that offers great coverage without caking.

3.

Bronzed goddesses reign supreme: less is more with bronzer when it comes to achieving a dewy complexion, just concentrate on the T-Zone. Subtle bronzing and a flush of highlight is a winning combination.

4.

Berry beautiful: a dewy complexion looks divine with a nude lip but for a look that pops, a strong red lip will always be a winner.

Judging by spring’s sartorial showcase, it would seem our flirtation with florals has become a fixation.

A

non-conformist approach is being taken with the aesthetic, however, so abandon your pre-conceptions of what lies ahead. Sure, femininity is still synonymous with this achingly elegant style, but ditch the notion that florals are old-fashioned, overly demure, or reminiscent of grandma’s old curtains. The latest incarnations are marching to the beat of their own drum, embracing an edgier interpretation of the florals our predecessors relegated to the back of the wardrobe. From fully sequinned flowers adorning Trelise Cooper’s Slip Away With Me Dress, to the delicate floral silk featured on Alice McCall’s Sunday Love Dress, collections from New Zealand’s most beloved designers are absolutely blooming. The to-die-for designs are all on offer at the mecca of fashion – Lynn Woods Boutique on Victoria Street. Discover the most exquisite ranges boasting everything from fundamentals to luxuries. The effortlessly stylish team – with a wealth of incredible experience – is on hand to help select every day and special occasion garments characterised by quality, sophistication and excellent fit. The first-time or immediate set of dentures is the most important you will ever have made. They are fitted immediately after the extraction of teeth either by an oral surgeon or a dentist. It is critical they are made with the utmost care for the patient’s future comfort and the functionality of the dentures. The position of teeth, how they need to be moved and the change in the patient’s occlusion (the way their teeth come together) are all part of the consideration.

A

t Dentures Plus, the treatment protocol around making and fitting immediate dentures is second-to-none. Ryan Carlton knows that immediate dentures are a major change to your body and it may take quite some time to adapt to them. Dentures Plus provides comprehensive advice for patients and is just a phone call away if there is anything you are concerned about. It is their role to solve any problems and to achieve the best outcome for each patient. Once you have your dentures, it is very important to clean them effectively daily to reduce the amount of bacteria that can accumulate on them – just as with natural teeth. Keeping your dentures clean will greatly aid in keeping your whole mouth clean and healthy. They need to be cleaned with denture toothpaste and a brush and Dentures Plus highly recommend Caldent Denture Cleaner. If you want a new smile for Christmas, Ryan says now is the time to come in for a consultation. Dentures do take several weeks to design and make. You will find Dentures Plus at 396 Innes Road. Ryan is happy to take evening appointments up to 7.00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays in addition to their normal hours.

MAGIC AT THE MALL There is something very special about school holidays at South City Centre – and the October holiday programme is especially exciting.

E

veryone’s favourite, the delightful Melanie Poppins, is back. Melanie is truly loved in Canterbury for brightening up children’s birthday parties with her red party frock and sparkly shoes. Melanie will be in the central court at 11.30am from October 2-6 to enthral children with her magic show, her storytelling and her singing and ukulele playing. She will also do free face painting between 12-1pm after each show. But wait, there’s even more in store. Shiver me timbers – the Natural Magic Pirates are coming. That’s Captain Long John Knickers and his sidekick, Nudger. They will be up to their usual

tricks of pirate theatre, original music and animal puppetry – watch out for the crocodile’s teeth – and, of course, lots of games for children to join in.

In store there will be pirate theatre, original music and animal puppetry. Don’t we all want to learn to talk like a pirate! There will be two shows daily at 11.00am and 1.00pm from October 11- 13. No doubt after all that shouting and clapping and general high jinks, many

children will be feeling rather hungry. Well, there is no excuse for leaving South City with a grumbling tummy when the best food court in town is right in the heart of the centre, offering choices to suit all tastes. Whatever the final choice is, the food can all be enjoyed in the comfort of the food court’s eating area, right beside the indoor children’s playground. With 550 free car parks on-site, South City has very easy access from both Durham and Colombo Streets. Find out about what is happening at the centre in the way of events and competitions and through Facebook – facebook.com/ southcityshoppingcentre.

PROSTATE CANCER’S

KIWI INTERVE The Kiwi bloke is a rugged rural figure, tough, hardworking and a little rough around the edges. He’s a lonesome figure with an innovative bent that lends itself well to being a bit of a DIYer and he’s not very in touch with his emotions – at least if the stereotypes are anything to go by.

W

hether or not this is realistic or a representation is up for debate, but what the statistics clearly show about the Kiwi bloke is that he’s not taking ownership of his health. Prostate cancer is having an alarming impact on the male population according to figures from the Prostate Cancer Foundation which reveal the extent, stealth and genetic link behind the nation’s most commonly diagnosed cancer amongst men. One in eight Kiwi men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime, with one man diagnosed every three hours and one or more dying every day. Risk also increases up to 11 times if two or more first-degree relatives were diagnosed with prostate cancer under the age of 65 years. The scale of the figures is reinforced by the comparison to diagnosis of breast cancer in women, with prostate cancer diagnoses over the past decade greater than breast cancer diagnosis levels. • Research shows we’re OK with ‘getting the finger’, yet only two in five men ask for a potentially life-saving test from their GP • Diagnosis numbers are revealed to be greater than breast cancer figures during the past decade • Men failing to take ownership of their own health identified as a key problem, coupled with a lack of proactivity from some GPs to recommend testing • New Zealand scientific projects have potential to change the course of diagnosis and treatment moving forward. Prostate Cancer Foundation CEO Graeme Woodside says the extent of the issue brings prostate cancer close to home for Kiwis. “It’s an awful reality check to discover just how many men are affected in New Zealand and for most people there will be at least one man in their circle who will develop prostate cancer at some point,” he says. “This year we’ve harnessed the insights from

36 September 28, 2017 Metropol

independent nationwide research of Kiwi men, coupled with asking prostate cancer survivors about their experiences, to really help us understand what needs to be done to get more men tested earlier.” Independent research of 1,000 men and 100 prostate cancer survivors has lifted the lid on awareness, attitudes to testing and the impact on the lives of men and their families. Woodside says the solution to turning the tide of unnecessary deaths lies in a quick trip to the doctor each year. “Our research was enlightening on many levels. Here’s what we discovered – our men are familiar with symptoms, tests and aren’t put off by what needs to happen when they get a check-up by their GP. They’re also passionate about living their life to the fullest. So why are so many men dying needlessly when a quick trip to the doctor each year can intercept and treat this dreadful type of cancer in its early stages?” Future focused efforts underway Kiwi excellence in science, research and development is pioneering world-class innovations in diagnosis and treatment, creating ground-breaking techniques with potential to change the course of prostate cancer amongst men globally. Caldera Health CEO Rob Mitchell says the opportunity to save lives through earlier, more accurate diagnosis is becoming a reality thanks to the efforts of New Zealand’s best scientific minds. “We’re working on a urine sample test with unparalleled accuracy and zero invasiveness. This kind of ingenuity, especially because it’s ‘homegrown’ right here in New Zealand, makes our work exciting and inspiring and we know it has the potential to make a huge impact once it becomes available.” PSMA scanning research at Mercy Radiology, immunotherapy vaccine development at the University of Otago and the prostate cancer registry are also making headway in the treatment of prostate cancer.

The new settlers are then greeted by the Mana Whenua of the land. From there a parade moves the celebrations down Rue Lavaud, entering Jubilee Park for the ‘Le Jour du Marché’. Here the magic of the blue, white and red swirls around a full day of market stalls, traditional French games, French food, wine, education, entertainment and much more.

Spying the land through their portholes last century, French colonisers set their hearts on Akaroa and not surprisingly. To this day, the small seaside spot remains rich in French history and the township celebrates this distinct heritage biennially at the Akaroa Frenchfest.

eld over the weekend of 6-8 October 2017, Frenchfest kicks off with a Friday night street party. The Beach Road waterfront is closed to vehicles, allowing people to enjoy a night of entertainment while spilling out onto the road, or from within the restaurants and bars. Saturday morning French Bay plays host to one of the most important historical parts of the Frenchfest, the re-

enactment of the landing of the French and German passengers of the Comte de Paris. Spectators will be entertained by a theatrical living history that brings to life the settlement of Akaroa in 1840. A multi-cultural camp site on the beach with French and English soldiers, whalers from around the world, early farmers and tangata whenua will set the scene for the arrival of the Comte de Paris. Spectators will watch as the cutters make their way

Saturday night plays host to a ticketed cabaret evening for the adults in the large marquee, with Can Can dancers, bands and burlesque entertainment, and on Sunday, the Frenchfest once again strengthens its connection with the local tangata whenua, with a celebration of Maori culture at the Onuku Marae Whanau Fun Day. “Akaroa is very proud of its European and Maori heritage, and the celebration of Frenchfest is one way of paying homage to it,” Akaroa Heritage Festival Society Chairman Margaret Moir says. “The connection with the local tangata whenua who were here to welcome the settlers is very important too and we are thrilled to have them as part of the events.” Frenchfest is a mainly free family orientated event celebrating the unity of European and Maori cultures in a historic township like no other. It continues to develop a national and international following by offering the perfect excuse to spend the weekend in Akaroa, enjoying the culture, food, wine and hospitality.

By the time swimmers finish our programme, we want them to swim at least 800 metres competently.” And there’s more to swimming than just learning to swim, Huia and Jenny say. “There’s so many aquatic sports out there,” Jenny says. “We urge everyone – particularly young people – to ‘imagine tomorrow’. If they can learn to swim now it can provide them with the ability to do other really neat water-based activities, such as surfing, wakeboarding, boardsailing and waterskiing. If you can’t swim, you’re really limited as far as the water’s concerned. Water confidence and capability can lead to so much more enjoyment.” Canterbury Swim School caters for all ages – babies through to adults – with lessons seven days a week. cuisine FORGOTTEN FRUITS By Melinda Collins

Though it’s easy to more closely associate the term ‘trend’ with our sartorial splurges or dalliances with decorating, our culinary creations are equally as swayed by the tide of popularity.

W

hether driven by an increasing popularity of foraging for our fare, a leaning toward more natural eats, or a growing sustainability movement, we’re seeing many of our natural natives coming back in vogue. Quince, crabapple, persimmons, as well as elderflowers and their berries, are just some of the rich bounty which are once again making their way from the branch to the bowl. A popular perennial which often finds itself cooked, sweetened and combined with other fruits as a dessert, rhubarb too is facing a culinary comeback. The tart flavour of this clever crop makes it a standout in crumbles, cobblers, tarts and cakes, especially when complemented with apple and berries. But it also plays a strong hand in jams, jellies, appetisers and soups. You could stick to the classics with a rhubarb tart or crumble, go all out with a rhubarb ripple semifreddo, or if you’re more tempted by a tipple, it’s been known to make a good gin.

FINALISING FESTIVE functions?

Once we reach the last quarter of the year we know the festive season with all its functions and events is looming large. Cosy intimate venues for family or office celebrations aren’t easy to find, but there is one little gem in Northwood that provides both of those elements and lots of other surprising special offerings as well.

T

he European owners of The Option Bistro and Wines know a thing or two about hospitality and ensuring their guests have both a wonderful experience and superb food as well. For pre-Christmas functions, they have designed two different threecourse set menus for lunch and dinner. One menu features traditional festive dishes – salmon, glazed hot ham, roast turkey, or chicken with cranberry sauce – while the other showcases items from the restaurant’s seasonal menu – ribeye steak, pork belly, fish of the day, or chicken and bacon salad. But lunch or dinner may not be the kind of celebration you want to hold. The Option has thought of that possibility too and created menus for Christmas

champagne breakfasts complemented by either Moet or Chandon champagne for $60 per person or sparkling wine for $25 per person. The Moet breakfast is especially luxurious with its caviar

A mid-afternoon festive high tea or a Sunday cocktail and canapé function may appeal. served on toasted bread and honey and sparkling fruit salad. A mid-afternoon festive high tea or a Sunday cocktail and canapé function may appeal. The Option won’t disappoint

for these types of functions. High tea on Monday – Thursday comes with cake stands filled with a selection of the chef’s irresistible savoury and sweet treats. Of course no high tea is complete without a glass of bubbles. If you book for cocktails and canapés on a Sunday you can have the whole venue for you and your guests (up to 60 people) and the restaurant will provide decorations and set out the venue exactly as you wish. There is no venue hire fee for these functions. Providing customers with what works for them is at the heart of The Option Bistro and Wines’ service philosophy. You can find the restaurant at 158 Hussey Road, Northwood. For bookings phone (03) 323 5455 or email bistro@theoption.co.nz.

A new world of

FOOD AND SERVICE “The air… so fragrant that it was delicious to breathe it,” Christopher Columbus once said, and would say again at the eponymous Columbus Coffee at Westfield Mall, had the great explorer lived to discover it.

wners Ian and Tess France and their team work hard to ensure that the food delights the senses. The cabinet choices are colourful and packed with variety. All made in the on-site kitchen, the selection covers the gamut from custom pies to M&M slice. Ian says customers find it hard to choose. Paleo and Gluten-free choices are a strength, and a sought-after specialty of the house is their Asian-style burger, on a charcoal bun. Ian says, “It’s like homemade food in that it is

made with love, the baking team is so passionate and inventive and every day is different”. The café is bathed in natural light, an enhancing experience for customers

“It’s like homemade food in that it is made with love.” resurfacing after mining the treasures of the mall. Seating up to 60, there is ample space for people and purchases.

Columbus is open seven days from 7am until mall closing time, while the kitchen supplies food ordered from the menu from 7am until 2pm. Ian delights in getting to know the patrons and goes on to say how much the team really cares about the customers. Just as I thought Ian might be ‘over-egging the omelette’, a customer approached our table to complement him on how lovely the staff are here, every visit. It’s a new world of food and service that Columbus would be proud of.

CHRISTCHURCH, the café city Don’t get me wrong. I agree we’re the garden city. It’s just that, for anyone employing their taste-buds as well as eyesight, we are spectacular in coffee and food. To come totally clean here, I’m specifically talking cake, muffins, scones, or friands.

O

The sweet stuff made here in Christchurch is brilliant.

ur eateries the country over are excelling in café fare of all levels of savouriness, with fresh flavour combos and fabulous salad ingredients. But the sweet stuff made here in Christchurch is brilliant. To any sceptics about our city’s quiet culinary achievements, check out the innovative flavour combos, plus the gluten-free and vegan options found here in Ōtākaro. There’s passionfruit paired with coconut; nectarine, white chocolate and ginger; plum, maple and pistachio; apple, blueberry and oatmeal; cardamom and caramel cakes. It’s dreamy. Most Christchurch cafés do stunning renditions of chocolate (or double-chocolate) brownie, and fudge, such as chocolate caramel cheesecake brownie, or macadamia,

cranberry chocolate fudge. Then there’s ginger crunch, which bears slight relation to the Edmonds Cookbook crunch (spoiler alert: its topping is bigger now than its base). Most Canterbury scones are also superlative. Down here in the south, we well understand that sweet goodness can be a life-boat. It’s not all sinful; most of the cakes I sampled had lower sugar levels than in baking’s 1950’s heyday. But they were unfailingly scrumptious. Regardless, what you’re really after with a cake order is a half-hour shuffle toward decadence. Life is tough enough; we occasionally need cream. Alongside a brilliant coffee, turmeric latte or berry smoothie, of-course.

Position a rack in the centre of the oven and preheat to 180˚C. Line a standard 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners. Sift flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, vanilla and 1¼ cups water. Make a well in the flour mixture and gradually pour in the oil mixture, whisking as you go until the dry ingredients absorb all the wet ingredients. Stir in the chocolate chips and raspberries, taking care not to break the latter apart too much, and divide the batter evenly among the prepared muffin cups. COFFEE NOOK A

Award Winning Butchery

FAMILIAR HAVEN

Coco Espresso feels a bit special. Welcoming. Being an owner operated business means every time you walk in the door you see either business owner Nick or staff member Caitlyn (often referred to as ‘the keeper of the peace’).

“I

t is just the two of us working here, so we very quickly end up learning new customer names, remembering orders and chatting away. We are the opposite of a faceless business.” Being a Monday to Friday business, Coco services the many businesses surrounding their Barbadoes Street location. In operation for a year and a half, they have a committed following of regulars. As they do not have their own kitchen, the cabinet is catered by the Blueberry Kitchen Catering and is full of homemade classics. Customers feel the calm, relaxed vibe: be it from the people, the water bowl for the (not forgotten) dogs, or the quality banter. The water bowl was heavily used when a neighbouring workplace had a ‘bring your dog

to work’ day. Handy with a camera, Nick stepped away from the espresso machine to take some photos for them. There is a familiarity to this coffee nook, a respite from the outside world for but a moment, as you enjoy sustenance in your work day (rumoured to have the best cheese rolls in town). If the hilarious Coco’s ‘Review of the Month’ board is anything to go by, “Actually pretty alright” – according to some Australian guy, then this place is obviously a must visit. According to another customer, “Words cannot espresso how awesome this cafe is”.

LUXURIOUS LINEN By Melinda Collins

Tough, durable and yet soft to the touch, it’s a textile oxymoron and, despite being one of the oldest fabrics in the world, linen is taking over the homewares space in beautiful fashion.

W

hen it comes to upholstery and sheets, linen is a fabric favourite, with its durability lending itself well to the family environment. Resisting wear from abrasion as well as dirt and stains, this tempting textile even stands its own against pills and stretching. So, it’s not surprising that its use is spreading across an even greater range of homewares than ever before, with draperies, table cloths, bedspreads, curtains, drapes

and even rugs looking luxurious in linen. Known rather romantically by the ancient Romans as textus ventilus, or ‘woven wind’, texture is linen’s main allure. Soft and cool, it’s a great summertime addition to the bedroom and it becomes softer after use. Linen is, by its very nature (pun intended), a sustainable product – with flax plants requiring very little irrigation, pest control and processing energy. Inherently antimicrobial, linen is even resistant to mildew. What’s not to love?

This tempting textile is a great summertime addition to the bedroom.

SPORT

Architect Cymon Allfrey discusses the valuable role a new stadium will play in ensuring we are rebuilding a greater Christchurch.

R

ebuilding our city over the last few years hasn’t just been about achieving spaces in which we can live and work, but about creating a city that people want to live in. I was recently invited to be part of a review panel in the final critique of a design challenge, put in place by Regenerate Christchurch. Bringing together emerging design talent, each group was required to review and provide a solution for key sites across the city. Listening to one particular team present their proposal saw them take us on a verbal journey of the site, talking about the route they took to arrive there and how this impacted their final design solution. A notion that reminded me that cities are made up of various layers, each one

dreaming of a beautiful new

contributing to what makes it functional, beautiful and, of course, livable. People respond to built environments for different reasons and purposes, connecting with space and buildings on psychological, physical and metaphysical levels; connections that have been forming in Christchurch for hundreds of years. 170 years ago our colonial ancestors trekked across the Bridle Path, selecting the vast empty site before them as the perfect location in which to build a city. Historical records also tell the story of important Māori trade routes that existed along sections of the Avon River. And now it is our time to continue this legacy of building a great place in which to gather, work and live. While there are a number of political carrots being dangled to Christchurch residents at the moment, discussions around a stadium are hard to ignore. Raising numerous questions, including at what point we should be investing in such a large project, considering there is so much more these valuable dollars could be spent on. As experts in living, the design community brings a unique perspective when it comes to viewing spaces as a whole, rather than simply as a structure. Ensuring each project ticks not only the requirements of those who will inhabit it, but that it supports the overall need to create a greater city. Like many cultural aspects of the city, and other such iconic buildings and features, a stadium is not something that will be used by, or be relevant to all of us. Yet without it we are failing to attract the diversity we need to ensure the layers of our city exist and to ensure we are building a useable, workable city. While the economic benefits are hard to ignore, the critical aspect is about creating a livable environment

“IT’S ABOUT CREATING A LIVABLE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH WE CAN CONNECT WITH VARIED GROUPS, NOT SIMPLY THOSE WHO ARE SPORTS MAD.” in which we can connect with wide and varied groups of people. Not simply those who are sports mad. One of the most picturesque areas of our city to walk is the stretch of road leading from the Canterbury Museum to Cathedral Square. If we extend that experience to culminate at a stadium, imagine the activity that would emerge as a result; activating a route that will be utilised by all, not simply stadium users. It is without doubt that this is a grain of infrastructure that every city needs, including ours. Like all key projects, discussions around the stadium are both polarising and on-going, yet we have to ask ourselves how we can ensure we are adding value to as many users, visitors and residents of the city as possible. A stadium is an essential component to achieving this. www.caarc.co.nz

I

n the real world, keeping your home calm and uplifting to the spirits is slightly trickier. So, while we all need our homes to be sanctuaries, both physically and emotionally, how do we actually make this happen?

• A throw-out of stuff that’s past its useby-date in any sense, coupled with enough storage facilities, is your starting point. • Employ the assistance of some rolling storage to literally roll away the clutter. Wheeled storage containers are great to sort things and roll them into large cupboards or under beds. • Next, a spring-clean is in order. We all know that the key to actually doing, is to put on loud, upbeat music and a ‘pinny’, and going for it. • Cabinets are always stuffed with items, let’s face it, it’s what they’re there for. But why not sort kitchen cupboards into matching, labelled containers and caddies.

OZ DESIGN FURNITURE

CREATING CALM By Liesl Johnstone

In your dreams, your kitchen bench is always a vision of polished perfection – and here’s the thing – it’s completely empty. No dirty dishes, keys, mail or extraneous clothing waiting for the mammoth clean-up.

• If you’re constantly finding jackets and cardigans strewn throughout the house, why not invest in some nice coathangers, ensuring the ease of access doesn’t impede your calm space. • This is the time of year to throw open the doors and windows and prepare to paint a wall or two. Colour really does affect our moods. For instance, too much of the wrong yellow makes people irritable. It’s still a great mood-booster when used as an accent. • Decide on whether your home-life needs a white, cream, taupe, or a blue or green backdrop. Most shades of each of these broad colour categories will be deeply calming. In general, blue – like the endlessness of space, is profoundly restful and contemplative. • Flowers and greenery have a naturally (pun intended!) calming effect, so put together some floral arrangements (to match the new paint job) and invest in some new pots and plants. • Send them all out; lie on a couch under your new blue wall and fall soundly asleep.

DRESS YOUR HOME IN ITS SUNDAY BEST Home staging is the art and science of preparing a home to sell in the shortest time for the highest value. A stylishly presented home can transform a property, says Pamela Bamforth, who is celebrating 11 years of owning and operating the Style File, furnishing empty properties on the market.

I

t’s been said that only about five percent of people are able to visualise their furnishings in an empty space, so any imperfections or unusual spaces can be magnified without staging, she says. “An empty house looks very bare, especially with many of the EQC builds completed using quite neutral colours. Every house is individual and I focus on giving it warmth and character to make it feel like a home, by supplying furniture to fill the property and ensuring it’s presented to its full potential.” Based on each home’s style, colour palette and client preference, Pamela has a warehouse filled with quality pieces, from statement furniture for living and dining spaces to the smaller touches, such as flowers, soft furnishings and art work. Pamela provides home staging and interior styling across Canterbury for everything from traditional homesteads to contemporary new builds. “Things are ticking along nicely as we head into spring – photos look so much more appealing when the sun is shining, so now is a great time to prepare to sell your home.” Contact Pam on 03-349 4626 and 021 314 626 or visit www.thestylefile.co.nz for more information.

The company feels Christchurch is now in the third phase of the rebuild, possibly the most challenging, but also the most sustainable, that being the ‘business as usual’ phase. “We feel that seeing each new stage in the rebuild as a positive challenge, rather than the end of a ‘boom’, is pivotal to our ongoing success,” company Director Avon Dickie says.

SEEING EACH NEW STAGE IN THE REBUILD AS A POSITIVE CHALLENGE IS PIVOTAL TO OUR ONGOING SUCCESS.”

CONSTRUCTION GAME-CHANGER After being incorporated in August 2005, and like many businesses, Avon Dickie Construction has been through some huge changes in the Christchurch construction scene. Again the market is changing and the company is relishing the current opportunities being presented to its team.

T

he initial strategy for Avon was to remain a small, boutique operation, building one or two high-end projects at a time. However, the growth opportunities of the earthquakes forced a change of direction. An increase of scale and professionalism was required and the business strove to meet the demands

of a market driven mainly by project management offices. Increasing the size of the team and investing in plant was fundamental to growth, and allowed the business to train staff and increase skill levels in anticipation of getting back to its true passion, architectural construction.

Along with this attitude, accepting that a business’s prosperity is all about the team rather than a name above a door, is crucial. “We have such a great bunch of guys working for us, many who have stayed with us for years, and hopefully have every intention of staying and growing with the company for many more to come,” Avon says. “Our longest serving member has been with us for ten years and even some of those who I think of as new have been with us for five or six years. The reality is that we have staff working for us who are better at running sites, and completing projects to a high standard than I could have achieved myself, and as a company owner, nothing is more satisfying than knowing your guys have this level of skill and dedication.” Moving forward, some of the original goals are as they were at the beginning. The company still wants to be recognised as one of the best architectural construction companies in Christchurch, although possibly on a slightly larger scale than the original vision. The company has some great projects in the pipeline, and is currently working on seven larger projects, as well as other smaller works around the city. Added to that are the many buildings they have already completed. The portfolio is certainly growing. “We have definitely learnt a lot in the last twelve years, and like all businesses, we have had our ups and downs. We have built some great relationships with architects and homeowners over the years, and we intend to be building exciting houses for years to come. From our point of view, we still feel like a very young company just warming up and with a lot still to achieve.”

PIONEERING LANDMARK PROJECTS

Two years prior to the dedication of Oi Manawa Canterbury Earthquake Memorial Wall, Peter Carroll made six trips to Northern Italy, and two trips to a quarry in the remote rainforest of Haikou Island, China. His mission was the procurement and delivery of two hundred tons of Carrara marble and 125 tons of basalt.

T

he family business, SlabCo Ltd, was lead contractor on supply of materials, design detailing and fixing that became what is perhaps one of the most important landmarks in Canterbury. “It was an extremely tight programme,” Peter says. To meet the deadline, the entire SlabCo team was working seven days a week, occasionally pulling 18 hour days. On 22 February 2017, the stunning memorial Oi Manawa was unveiled to the nation. The business wholesales marble, granite, basalt, engineered stone and semi-precious stone for projects ranging from benchtops and stone cladding to large public space projects, commercial and residential developments. Peter

has more than 30 years in the stone trade with completed projects in Europe, Hong Kong, Kuwait, and right here in Canterbury, recently supplying Brazilian Super-White Granite to the new Novatel Airport project. The Christchurch warehouse stocks internationally sourced granite from Brazil and Madagascar; Iranian Onyx; Spanish and Lebanese Marble, to name a few. Many materials are unique to SlabCo. Peter says, “We pride ourselves on superb quality, from quarry to project site”. These exacting standards and high demand have paved the way for a new Auckland operation for early 2018. See www.slabco.co.nz for details and more information. Metropol September 28, 2017 63

wner Simon Walmisley says more than 450 students attend their adults and children’s courses each week; with the youngest being five years old, and their oldest nearly 90, it’s clear this is a school, gallery and art supplier that has a broad, far-reaching appeal. “We have five amazing tutors who are completely dedicated to their students in helping them to reach their artistic potential,” Simon says. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, he is rightly proud of the place this creative hub holds in people’s hearts. With a focus on the final term 16 Oct – 15 December, courses available cater to all and every preferred media of painting, from adult freehand drawing, sketching, pastels and watercolours, through to oils and acrylics, abstract painting, and for those tentative beginners – the ABCs of painting. The children’s courses are diverse and exciting, covering painting courses, in which the children are taught in acrylics then progress onto oils; drawing and cartoon classes, in which children are taught the steps to become proficient in this medium; and then there are holiday art programmes. “The best reward is seeing their work hanging in our gallery,” Simon says. “But our Facebook page is pretty awesome too.” Visit www.artmetro.com or Facebook www.facebook.com/ArtMetroNZ.

POOL PERFECTION BETTER POOLS BEGIN WITH BETTER MATERIALS The most important component of any swimming pool is the pool shell itself. It is the centrepiece for the surrounding landscaping, and possibly the whole yard.

The Acclaim pool

agoon Pools, owned and operated by Julie and Warren Hastings, is the South Island dealer, from North Canterbury to Southland, for Leisure Pools, world leaders in fibreglass swimming pool design and manufacture. The primary ingredient in any fibreglass pool is the resin, and there are two types utilised in most pool construction. Poly Ester Resin is a less durable option that is vulnerable to osmosis, where the resin breaks down and allows bubbles of trapped water and pressure to reduce the integrity of the pool shell. Leisure Pools uses only Vinyl Ester Resin, a highperformance, corrosive resistant resin that prevents water penetration, along with Composite Armour, which improves the strength of the shell. These elements allow the manufacturer to offer a Lifetime Structural and Lifetime Osmosis Warranty. Lagoon Pools has recently added two new pools to its already stunning line up. The Acclaim takes pool design features to the next level. The Europa is an incredibly stylish rectangular pool. Both feature a large splash deck that allows children to play safely, entry steps or bench seats to suit, and an unmatched High Water Line design with hidden skimmers that remove debris from the water surface. The Acclaim and Europa, and classical pools such as Elegance and Reflection, are available through Lagoon Pools. Julie and Warren will oversee the design, manage the consent process if required and, along with the installation, they can also assist with everything related to landscaping and pool equipment. Contact them at www.lagoonpools.co.nz and 0800 927 282.

o whether you are planning a new garden or simply revamping your old one, McSaveney’s Nursery has everything you need to create a stylish contemporary look or a more formal classic style. Over the next few months, flowering perennials will be doing their thing beautifully – McSaveney’s has some wonderful specimens available. Trees are also bursting into life and McSaveney’s has a great selection of maples, flowering cherries, mop tops, magnolias and michelias catering to customers’ needs for evergreen and deciduous trees. As always, the nursey also has shrubs, hedging, and groundcovers to choose from and the quality, size and price are hard to beat. Top of people’s plant purchasing lists at the moment are plants with colour and texture for adding to established gardens. There is also a swing back to flowers and plants with fragrance are popular too. The drab winter must have something to do with this. Justin, Carolyn, Michelle and Adrian are always on hand at the nursery to give helpful advice to help you create a garden to suit your lifestyle – one that you will look forward to spending many hours in over the summer months. TILING TEMPTATIONS As the warmer months draw close, thoughts can turn to entertaining friends and family, and the desire to give a tired kitchen a lift. But how often have you taken a sample product away from a showroom, only to groan at how it actually looks in your house? At the showroom of Exquisite Tiles, natural light streams onto the huge variety of tiles displayed, so you get to see how they really look.

t is easy to add elegance to your kitchen with a splashback in a pattern, shape or texture that changes a scheme up from conventional to stunning, at minimal cost,” Consultant Michele O’Connell says. Where coloured glass was once the goto for splashbacks, the cost-effectiveness of tiles, their versatility and ability to add character, means their popularity is at an all-time high. There are tiles to suit all price ranges, and consultants are available to talk through your plans, or start your selection process with references to existing colours, benchtops and cabinetry. A free on-site measure and quote, plus a supply and installation package, is part of the service. Tiles are available in large format or small, smooth or textured, strongly or softly patterned in geometric shapes, or marbled finishes. The textured tiles astonish with their easy-clean finish – somehow the relief of the profile is more visual than physical. The fabulous Geostone Esagonetta replicates a glass mosaic but without the acreage of grout to clean. Whether your tile style is anaglypta, mixed décor, rustic, subway, or yet to be determined, Exquisite Tiles can assist.

spring success The secret to

Despite what you might think, success in the spring garden is really easy if you follow a few really basic principles.

M

ost plants love good soil because, just like us, they get hungry, especially when they’re growing, so pre-planting preparation is an easy way to get success. And that’s very simple to achieve with the mixing of good quality fibrous compost and ‘Real Blood & Bone’ into the soil before planting. ‘Real Blood & Bone’ hasn’t had any of the blood content extracted so it’s twice as effective. These additions will provide fertility, encourage earthworms and improve aeration and drainage. Most plants love warmth, so protect them from excessive wind where possible and, if necessary, use a few bricks to build a short low wall to maximise heat for growing great herbs including basil, which thrives in high heat.

Success in the spring garden is really easy if you follow a few really basic principles. Water is an obvious one, but the trick is to water deeply and thoroughly, then leave the water to drain away and dry out a bit before the next watering. Roses just love water, so trickling a hose at their base will give you pretty much constant flowering. Different plants have different fertiliser needs, depending on their roles. Those that produce flowers, like roses, flowering annuals, hydrangeas and perennials, need a plant food with plenty of potash, which is the element they use to produce flowers and fruit. Plants that are grown for green foliage, like most vegetables, trees and lawn grass, need high levels of nitrogen. Terra Viva Home and Garden will happily advise you on what to use for specific plants. Metropol September 28, 2017 71

designer concrete floors and unique concrete feature walls – including faux stone and timber – as well as concrete benchtops. Prefabricated benchtops are typically made from Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GFRC), Jocelyn says. “This is a super high strength, specially-designed concrete material, which looks a million bucks without the price tag – and without the weight of a solid concrete benchtop. So, it’s much easier to transport and work with.” To view the stunning flooring options so clients can see and touch the product before making their decisions, Flash Concrete displays the range at its new showroom in Sydenham, as well as at an exhibit at the Home Ideas Centre in Riccarton. Opening soon, the exhibit will feature flooring and concrete benchtops, as well as seamless thin set concrete shower systems and microtopping. “Microtopping is an internationally popular alternative to polished concrete and the seamless shower system creates a continuous look with no joins, which looks fantastic and means no grouting and no mould.” The highly skilled and experienced staff are passionate about what they do and have a strong focus on professionalism and customer service. Providing a full service, from inspiration and design to creation and completion, the team can help manage your project every step of the way – and inspire you to create something unique that will give you great pride and satisfaction, Jocelyn says. “We have a strong appreciation and understanding of concrete – it’s a lot more versatile than many realise.” Located at 32 Hawdon St, Sydenham, for more information visit flashconcrete.co.nz or phone 03 595 2079. CUES AND MORE

Lamborghini is on a roll. With the launch of the updated ‘S’ variant of the ballistic Aventador earlier this year, it was inevitable we would see an open top edition of their flagship hypercar before long. So sure enough, the new Aventador S Roadster has arrived.

“T

he new Aventador S Roadster sets new benchmarks in technology and performance on both road and track, with the roadster version adding a new dimension in driving enjoyment,” Lamborghini Chairman, Stefano Domenicali says. The new Roadster carries over the same epic styling cues from the coupe, with the addition of matt black carbon

removable roof panels which weigh less than 6kg. The Aventador S Roadster contains four driving modes, Strada, Sport and Corsa and the new Ego mode. The latter allows the driver to tailor the settings to suit their driving style. The sprint from 0-100km/h is dealt with in 3.0 seconds, with the topless bull running out of puff at 350 km/h, the same as the coupe, despite the Roadster weighing 50 kg more.

Its 6.5 litre V12 engine outputs the same 740 hp as the coupé, with 690 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm. Helping to put the power through all four wheels is a sevenspeed lightweight Independent Shifting Rod (ISR) transmission capable of shifting gears in 50 milliseconds. F1 style pushrod suspension and carbon ceramic brakes come as standard. It won’t be cheap, but with summer around the corner, would you say no?

A CLEVER SUV

COMES INTO ITS OWN

When you’re in the market for an SUV, Sports Utility Vehicle, there is a lot to consider. If we’re talking about the holy grail of SUVs – the Škoda Kodiaq – the decision is an easy one.

L

et’s start with the statistics; 110kW, 9.7 0-100Km/h, turbo petrol, 250 torque, 1395 litre, automatic, seven-seater… and that’s when things get interesting. There’s certainly plenty of room. The question I get asked the most: how does it perform loaded up? So that’s what I did, packed my boys, their friends and all the necessary gear for a beach fishing trip and headed off.

you can put cats in its spacious interior! Great to drive, a pleasure to use, at a fantastic price: the Skoda Kodiaq is a ‘must look at’ on your SUV search because, in my view, it ticks all the boxes for the SUV of the year. Ready for family and work adventures? Škoda Kodiaq you are, simply clever.

motoring

It’s comfortable and durable. The interior is well-refined with black metallic trim and leather options, reversing camera and LED lighting – interior and exterior. Škoda Connect allows you to sync your device easily so you can play your music to annoy the children on the way to the beach and receive those important calls ensuring you don’t forget to pick up milk on the way home – all through a touch screen that’s a dream to use. There’s an umbrella holder in the door and the rear light in the boot is detachable, enabling it to be used as a torch. These were used in the Škoda Superb and the brand has obviously taken the highlights from one of last year’s ‘car of the year’ competitors and integrated them into the Kodiaq. Door edge protection means no chips in the door paintwork or dings in cars at the supermarket. Now, it’s bespoke, so you can ask Škoda for all the things to make this vehicle your own – great alloys, leather, whatever. So, the trip to the beach was a success. Powerful, agile, the Kodiaq drives fantastically loaded up. I’m a real estate agent and what I really loved was that I could put six ‘open home’ signs in the back, carry the keys in my pocket and open the boot before I got out to unload the back. Push button boot closure so easy! A big help with the school pick-ups too. Now the Kodiaq ticks a lot of boxes for me. I’ve driven a lot of SUVs and there’s far more to write about than I have space but here’s the killer… $39,990 – that’s $20,000 below its nearest competitor and with more features than

WHY WE RIDE Into the garage and take the dust sheet off my bike. I can feel a stirring in the pit of my stomach as I tie my overnight bag to the tail of my trusty Speed Triple. Four of us are heading for a weekend “sortie” to the top of the South Island. We agree the pace should be sports touring mode, allowing us to make brisk progress but stay safe.

B

y mid-afternoon we are in Motueka having a coffee and planning our first pass over Takaka hill. I suggest we adopt a quicker pace over the hill and the guys raise their eyebrows knowing I’m keen to exploit the Speed Triple’s torquey engine and fantastic chassis. Afternoon tea is taken in the sun in Takaka, before a short ride through to Collingwood to finish our first day’s riding and already there are tales being told of the day’s exploits. We rise early Saturday to get to the lookout point at Puponga to see the sun

rise. The cool morning air and deserted roads make this feel really special. As we pull into the lookout carpark, the faint orange glow of the sunrise is just beginning to make its presence felt. We scramble off our bikes and run up the hill to be sure to make the most of this amazing spectacle. The sun steadily rises as does the air temperature and conversation turns to breakfast and a suitable venue. We all agree that a “spirited” ride back to Takaka should see us hit the township just as the cafés start to open their doors.

Back on the bikes and again we get to enjoy largely deserted roads. The Speed Triple R is in its element and so am I as we weave down the sinewy roads. We pull into Takaka as the young waitress from one of the cafés is pitching her board with the day’s delicacies. Breakfast is taken with the usual commentary of the ride and a plan for us to ride through to Nelson and on to Havelock and mussels for lunch.
