For every Cantabrian who is happy to see the cruise ships back in Lyttelton, there is another who is upset about them.
Uncertainty and concerns swirl around the environmental impacts that they have, and their

value to the ports settlements where they dock.
The past few weeks have seen numerous cruise ships pull in to the new $67 million Lyttelton berth. The cruise ship season, which runs until April 10, 2023, will see 85 cruise ships tie up in Lyttelton Harbour, carrying about 170,000 passengers and 35,000 crew.
Akaroa, which held the fort while the Lyttelton wharf was constructed, will host at least 15 ships, carrying another 8000 passengers and 1000 crew.
Overall the cruise season is expected to inject $262 million into the local economy, which is great news, even though many small tourism operators in the

I’ve been on several cruises of varying vessel sizes and travel durations, and the formula is usually the same. The tourists pre-book excursions, disembark and head away from the entry ports without spending any money locally.
Excitement does pervade the atmosphere when a large ship sails into port, yet often that is where it ends. There’s a reason why Venice, Dubrovnik, Dublin, Amsterdam, Marseille, Barcelona, and Santorini have banned large cruise ships in recent times. If you had told Brigit Blair that her solution to soothing her children’s eczema would one day become an internationally recognised brand, she might not have believed you. Twenty seven years later her daughter Juliet speaks to Metropol’s Georgia Summerton about taking on the CEO role of that very brand.
Born in England to Cantabrian parents, Juliet spent her first four years immersed in di erent cultures and places. This is where she suspects her love of travelling was born.
“I’m one of three kids and, somehow, we all caught the wanderlust bug. We’ve all spent time living in di erent corners of the globe, and have actually all started our families with partners from other parts of the world.
“Within our wider family now we have a great melting pot of cultures - Kiwi, German, Canadian and Japanese.”
Juliet recently succeeded her mother as CEO of skincare company Linden Leaves. While this role holds an extra special significance, her experience has set her up to hit the ground running.
“I studied fairly eclectically at university, dabbling in law and languages before settling on architecture.
“From there I worked in film, then marketing, slowly growing more and more interested in the bigger picture of business, and how business can and should fit in the context of modern society.
“Brigit Blair, my mother, began the Linden Leaves story back in 1995, and it truly was your typical kitchen table start up in many ways,” Juliet explains.
It was her children’s su ering from bad eczema and allergies that led Brigit to consider the chemical contents of the products recommended at the time. It also started her thinking about how these kinds of products, contained in their ugly chemist packaging, simply failed to ‘spark joy’.
“She felt that alongside the ‘nature knows best’ ethos of blending product
formulas from quality, natural ingredients, there must also be an intrinsic wellbeing factor in beauty and appreciation,” says Juliet. “Results were important, but products could do more than just help improve people’s skin.”
Like all businesses, the now much-loved and recognised New Zealand brand has faced its own set of challenges, Juliet reflects.
“Oh there have been a few setbacks for the business over the years! The first fully fitted out international brand concept store we invested in ended in a pile of rubble when the building collapsed in a
“Work out what risk you can sustain should the worst happen, then have courage and take action. Be prepared to go all-in, work like a demon, be endlessly resilient, fail fast and learn from it - pick up the pieces and try again.”
tragic event in Seoul. The global financial crisis challenged our early progress, e ectively curtailing several blossoming distribution partnerships – our Canadian distributor at the time lost her best 80 stores in a single overnight decision by the store chain to close that part of their business. “Later Brigit broke her neck at the upper spine, closely avoiding paralysis, yet managed to continue to lead her team from home in a neck brace throughout her recovery. Then came the Christchurch earthquakes. And then the recent years of Covid-19.
“Business is never as easy as you plan.” It proves true that going through the
ups and downs of running a business will teach you a few things, and in the end make you stronger.
Brigit and Juliet’s best advice for women wanting to start a business is: “Work out what risk you can sustain should the worst happen, then have courage and take action. Be prepared to go all-in, work like a demon, be endlessly resilient, fail fast and learn from it - pick up the pieces and try again.”
Looking towards the future, for Juliet it’s mostly excitement as she moves into her new role.
“As her daughter and successor in the leadership role, it’s exciting to be able to bring some fresh energy to the table and wonderful to take up the opportunity to build on the sound foundations in place.
“I am truly in awe of my mother’s dedication, and her patience, resilience and pure, determined hard work over the last quarter century.”
Brigit, who will remain as Chief Brand Ambassador and Executive Chair, is looking forward to a slight change in focus and a little more time on her hands.
“I am looking forward to exploring and learning more about the areas of skin health that I feel passionate about. Over the years I have noticed the relationship between our skin health and how we feel. When we feel good our skin is healthy and when we are healthy our skin is good. The smell, texture and the way products feel on the skin can be moodlifting and build resilience. Small moments of self-care are so important.”
“I am also looking forward to the luxury of time - something that has been in short supply for too long. Time for family, friends, travel and just time to smell the roses!”

Joy Reid
One mother
Growing up in Auckland, Joy has lived around the country as well as abroad, including time spent in Germany as an exchange student. It’s fair to say a love of travel was sparked at a young age.
“I moved to Christchurch in 2002 to attend the New Zealand Broadcasting School, where I trained as a broadcast journalist, and met my now husband [Geo rey].”
Starting her career in radio, Joy was
based in Hamilton, then Auckland after landing a role with RNZ. Eventually returning to Christchurch in 2009, Joy took a job in the TVNZ newsroom, where she would go on to cover a range of monumental events, including the Canterbury earthquakes.
Success reached a new high for Joy when she landed a dream role as TVNZ’s European Correspondent in London.
Having had her first two children at this point, the Reid family packed up and moved to the UK. As the first mother to
ever be given this role, it is a very proud career moment for her.
“I covered royal weddings, Brexit and reported in nearly 20 di erent countries, returning home just before the pandemic hit. I’m now part-time with TVNZ, having had another baby in 2021 and am the CEO of the charity I co-founded, One Mother to Another.”
While Joy’s career in broadcasting has been full of special moments, a few stand out as particularly memorable. “Covering the recent death of Her Majesty the

Queen was a huge honour, privilege and an experience I will never forget. I’m also really proud of a series of stories I did in 2012 exposing the dangers of synthetic cannabis, which resulted in a huge community conversation and eventually resulted in law change,” says Joy.
Her charity, One Mother to Another, also holds a lot of pride in her life.
“One Mother to Another was started in 2016 by myself and my friend Christina, as we’d both experienced the distress and fear of having a child in hospital.”
All three of Joy’s children have spent time in hospital in either neonatal units or paediatric wards. As parents and non-parents alike can imagine, this is an extremely scary and lonely time.
“We wanted to encourage others who were in our position. Christina made up the first 10 care packages and they were so well received that I suggested we approach businesses to see if we could make it a more regular occurrence. Fast forward six years and we now give out 4000+ care packages a year to parents, primarily mothers, and whānau in 10 wards at four South Island hospitals.”
The care packages are made up of a few treats, practical and useful items, and a handwritten note of encouragement.
A small gesture that packs a lot of heart and support to those who need it most.
“Our dream is to one day support every parent in hospital with their child in Aotearoa but that is a really long-term

goal. In the shorter term we are wanting to expand into all South Island neonatal units and paediatric wards. We really want to encourage as many parents as possible as they walk through such a distressing time.”
Having gone through these experiences herself, Joy has a unique perspective, and wonderful advice to those struggling right now, emphasising the key message that, you’re never alone.
“You can feel so overwhelmed and think that everyone else is coping, but my biggest advice is to be honest, as you’ll realise there’s a whole community out there who can walk the journey with you.”

“M
ore precious” is the catchphrase for the Cancer Society’s campaign to raise the $3.5 million required to complete its new cancer centre in Papanui.
“Over a decade after losing our old premises in the earthquakes, our new centre is due to open its doors in May next year,” says Nicola Coom, Chief Executive of the Cancer Society’s Canterbury-West Coast Division.
“It aims to be the first of its kind,
providing integrated support for patients from across the South Island.” she says.
The building will include the largest accommodation facility available for South Island cancer patients. Up to 50 families can stay while their one of their loved ones are having treatment. There will also be a new cancer hub providing a range of support services – from nutrition and counselling to massage and financial advice - and a ‘Park and Ride’ shuttle service will transport patients to their hospital appointments and back again.”
Nicola says that one of the big drivers for the centre has been the increased rate of cancer diagnoses. This year alone, 26,000 New Zealanders will learn they have cancer, and this number is set to double in the next decade.
“So we are preparing for the future with the new centre and taking a collaborative approach where everyone involved in the cancer sector can work together.”

Spring has been cool and unpredictable and to be able to dine outdoors in lovely surroundings will be a boost to many spirits. A special place to dine is in the garden of the Red Post Cafe in Culverden. The cafe is in a picturesque restored villa; the garden echoes the period with its cottage-style plantings of irises and granny bonnets, roses and rhododendrons creating a riot of colour. The garden is so beautifully cultivated that it is visited by garden tours.
Beneath the shade of big trees you can enjoy the appetising food for which the cafe is famous. Light seasonal salads are perfect fare – Caesar, smoked salmon, Moroccan chicken or Thai beef salad – and of course there is the cloud-like salmon sou é that can never be taken o the menu.
You can enjoy Red Post Cafe’s food away from the cafe itself as well. They have an out-catering service for all kinds of functions around the North Canterbury area they might be – anywhere is possible. The cafe owners are happy to recommend you food based on what you like.
It could be a morning or afternoon tea, or a set lunch or platters for a crowd. Whatever you choose you can be assured it will be delicious.
Red Post Cafe is open seven days. Monday – Thursday 8am – 4.30pm; Friday, Saturday and Sunday 8am – 5pm.

The name change supports the vision to see locally driven year-round activities, participation and organising around ‘Sharing, Growing and Celebrating’ in Aotearoa.
Streets, apartment blocks, rural communities, neighbourhoods, and suburbs are encouraged to connect, share and celebrate together in meaningful ways
through small gatherings, shared projects, special events or a shared sentiment.
“We want neighbourhoods to have the ability to act, shape, and influence the things that matter to them,” says community developer Cissy Rock.
“This might be something that filters out beyond the month of March, therefore having a year-long support network such as Neighbours Aotearoa is needed.”
From humble beginnings and one day in 2009, Neighbours Aotearoa has evolved, initially to 10 days, and next year it will be all month.
The focus is on neighbours connecting to each other in their local communities, through common denominator activities, such as cooking, eating, craftwork, and learning.

Focus on long term
When we take Auckland and Wellington statistics out, we can get a far clearer picture of what is happening, says Marijke Sheppard of Ray White Rangiora.
“Waimakariri and Hurunui are still trending upwards, albeit on a slower basis,” she says.
“Those sellers who hold their nerve are still seeing realistic o er levels, however those who believe the market is dropping on a daily basis are leaving potential money behind for the purchasers to enjoy.
“We may be living in unusual times, but this is not an unusual market - it is more of a ‘normal’ market.”
Marijke adds that home ownership has never been a short term investment.
“Focus on the long term and enjoy your home. We at Ray White deal in only facts benefitting our clients with real-time accurate data that is relevant to you and your local market. “It is important to always seek professional, unbiased opinions that are backed up by factual data,” Marijke explains.

holiday scams
A new report from cyber safety brand Norton has revealed that 28 percent of New Zealanders have fallen victim to scams during holidays seasons, losing on average NZ$509.
The report also showed that almost a quarter of New Zealanders are still willing to take more risks, such as buying online from an unknown seller and clicking on advertisements, when shopping during a holiday season.
Nearly two in five Kiwi adults (38 percent) also admit to risking their personal information or privacy during holidays, many by posting a picture of their travel
destination or tagging their current location on social media.
The results also show that while people are aware of the risks online, many still make holiday purchases by clicking on questionable advertisements on social media, putting themselves at risk of fraud.
The research was conducted online in August 2022 among 1001 New Zealand adults by The Harris Poll.
This year, respondents name toys, books
or board games, smartphones, smart watches, and gaming consoles as the most sought-after gifts. Half of those surveyed were willing to take various actions this Christmas season to get a coveted gift, with 30 percent prepared to spend more than three hours searching online. Thirteen percent were also prepared to risk their personal or online safety by sharing personal information.
When a business is sold, there is normally a period of restraint on the Vendor to prevent them owning or working in a similar business for a specified period after the sale, within a specified distance of the business. The reason for this is to prevent the Vendor competing directly with their Purchaser, who has paid goodwill for the opportunity to own and operate the business.
A Vendor may be aware that they intend to be involved in a similar business close to the original business. If this is the case, it is important for the Business Broker handling
the sale to be aware of that and insert a clause in the Agreement to the effect that nothing in the Agreement will prevent the Vendor from operating XYZ Business at the new location. This is to have complete transparency, so that the Purchaser isn’t blind-sided by the Vendor’s actions.
An experienced Business Broker will be able to assist in ensuring that the parties are fully informed and are aware of what is happening and that there are no future ramifications.

To help New Zealanders stay safer this holiday season, Norton recommends these key actions to avoiding risks while shopping online:
STICK TO REPUTABLE RETAILERS
Check seller ratings, and preferably purchase from retailers with a physical address, a customer service phone number and a professional-looking site. Warning signs of sketchy sites include poor spelling, odd design and slow loading.
LOOK OUT FOR FAKE WEBSITES
Fraudsters may set up fake websites of products that don’t exist so they can collect payments for goods they’ll never send.
AVOID SUSPICIOUS LINKS FROM SOCIAL MEDIA ADVERTISEMENTS OR UNFAMILIAR EMAILS
Don’t click on suspicious links even if they look attractive. Stay vigilant and don’t fall for the cheap price tag.
IF YOU GET A MESSAGE, AN EMAIL OR TEXT ABOUT AN ITEM YOU DIDN’T ORDER, STOP AND THINK
If you’re unsure whether a message is legitimate, contact the business through established channels you can find, chat through their website or call their customer service phone number.
USE A VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK (VPN) when making online purchases on public or unsecured Wi-Fi.
USE REPUTABLE ONLINE SAFETY TOOLS
Identity theft is an ongoing concern, with people’s personal data used to take out loans and secure credit cards in the victim’s name.

Victoria Jane
COLLECTIONS OF DIVINE DESIGN
The Victoria Jane collections of divine design tell the world that she might love flowers but she is no wallflower, she blooms; she might like parrots but she won’t copy the words of another, she has her own; her crown might tilt from time to time but she will straighten it and stride ahead and delight in discovering more gems in her life. Just as you will delight in discovering more gems in the Victoria Jane collections of divine design that personify your beauty and mood of the moment. And your loved ones will want to give you ‘more’ so
that sparkle, shine and smile in your eyes stays bright and never dulls.
‘More is more’ for the Victoria Jane woman but every Victoria Jane woman gets to define what ‘more’ looks like for her. For one it might be having a home full to the brim of the bold and the bright yet for another it might be just a flash or splash here and there of deeply decadent designs. It might well be discreetly behind closed doors emerging out of the bath to the smell of sensual Victoria Jane

candles, wrapped in a decadent Victoria Jane bath towel, lounging across a beautiful and bold Victoria Jane blanket, resting against a divinely designed Victoria Jane cushion and all the time delighting in being secretly gloriously decadent.
It could be the treasure of a luxury designer vegan Victoria Jane handbag that makes her feel like a crowned princess with a splash of colour that catches your eye and the twinkle in her eye. The design she reaches for can tell you if she is feeling as strong, silent and sensual as the prowling tiger or as flitty, flirty and flighty as the hummingbird or as a bold, bright and brilliant as the flamingo.
Victoria Jane is the embodiment of my love of designing and curating collections that you want to engulf you, that you can see, smell and touch. It is a celebration of being all we are and all we can be as women, giving ourselves permission to be plentiful, playful and purposeful. The greatest joy is standing back and watching people savor it all and their smile reaching their eyes. It makes my heart smile when I hear stories about how glorious someone has been made to feel with a gift or random act of kindness from the Victoria Jane collections ‘just because’ they are truly special to you. It has been a life-long dream to be able to design and curate collections that take on and reflect the identity of the woman who treasures them. Many hours are spent on the design and bringing together ‘more’ because every woman deserves ‘more’ so she never accepts ‘less.’ It’s why we have the collections as we do so that you can curate your own collection over time or you might need a little help putting this together for a loved one. And we love hearing the stories behind why a design has struck a chord with you or your loved one – and of course, a picture tells a thousand words.

1 April,
Returning to the one of the world’s longest catwalks, the iD Show will feature fashion royalty including NOM*d, Company of Strangers, Mild Red, Charmaine Reveley, Carlson, Kahuwai, Moochi, and Liz Mitchell showcasing full Winter23 collections.
The event received funding this year from the Russell Henderson Trust to support three Central Otago designers to present capsule collections in next year’s
show - ReCreate, New Lands, and Margaret Wray. Additionally, Willmott-Dalton, su’mar, Jojo Ross, and Vader, and Kate&Frances will present considered edits of their upcoming collections.
Event Manager Victoria Muir says, “We want the show to celebrate diversity in all its forms – including the designer collections and models on the catwalk. We have already held a successful open model casting to ensure the model cast is diverse. “Another strong theme for iD 2023 is
sustainability and we are working towards being a zero-waste event. The submission process this year included a request for detail about both these themes - it’s so fantastic to see how designers interpret these words and are implementing the concepts in their day-to-day practice,” she adds.
The iD Dunedin Fashion Show will also feature the finalists in the iD International Emerging Designer Awards. Tickets are on sale now.

OASIS blonde BEAUTY
Anne Mclean, owner of The Lightroom, relocated her business to Christchurch from Methven in late August. She says, “The new location on the Boardwalk, at The Tannery, is a calm and restful oasis amongst the busy atmosphere of the boutique shopping emporium.” Her clients receive tailored rejuvenation, body sculpting, cryosurgery, and laser hair removal treatments at competitive prices.
HERE ARE SOME OPTIONS:
The Milesman Diode laser gently and safely removes unwanted hair. This treatment is a safe and e ective way to permanently reduce unwanted facial and body hair.
Ulfit is a non-invasive, chemical-free alternative to surgical facelifts and injectables. It also produces long-lasting results (12-18 months).
Commonly called the ‘Lunchtime Facelift’, the full-face skin tightening treatment produces immediate visible firming and reduction in lines and sagging skin, and works deep down to stimulate collagen production. This creates continuous improvement in the skin’s texture and plumpness over the following 90 days.
The popular ‘Hollywood Facial’ can provide you with clearer, glowing, plumper skin and is a great option to have before a special event, or whenever you want to look your best.
FreezPen quickly and painlessly removes unwanted pigmentation, skin tags, cherry angiomas and benign moles or spots. Get in touch to learn more.

Looking for your new favourite product, treatment, hairstyle or workout but not sure where to start? Here are a few inside tips and tricks from local beauty, body and hair experts.
PREVENT AND REVERSE AGEING
We all want to look and feel our best, and for many of us, that means having healthy skin.
Dermapen microneedling is a popular treatment that stimulates the body’s natural healing response. Say goodbye to acne scarring, fine lines, and crows feet, and hello to plump, youthful and beautiful.
Very fine needles lightly puncture the skin’s superficial top layer by a fraction of millimetres, prompting the stimulation of collagen and elastin, which heals and plumps the skin. Not only does it help restore your skin’s youthful appearance, but it also reduces inflammation, pore size and acne scarring, unlocking a more youthful appearance. Learn more at https://quinnbeautyspa.co.nz/microneedling/

slip into silk
For centuries silk has been lauded as a luxurious indulgence, soft on the skin, eye-catching, and something special.
New Zealand’s home linen brand, M.M Linen, introduced a ‘Silk’ collection to its range a little over two years ago. The collection includes silk robes and chemises, silk duvet sets, pillowcases, makeup bags, eye masks, and face masks.
Luxurious and smooth, the silk collection is made from premium high density pure 22 momme mulberry silk, except for the duvet set, which utilises 19 momme silk. The momme value (pronounced mo-mae)
depicts the weight of the silk fabric; the higher the value, the higher the density of the silk fabric.
Mulberry silk is known to have hypoallergenic properties and has been produced and worn for many centuries, says company founder Kerry Jackson. “The smoothness and breathability of the fabric makes it ideal for sleepwear and bedding,” she adds.
M.M Linen is known for its signature designer florals in bedding.
Now its beautiful prints, along with
complimentary plain colours, are available in luxurious and lustrous silk chemises and robes, beautifully presented in monogramed gift boxes.
The company’s new store opened at the Elmwood village shops, Christchurch, last month. Since opening, a steady stream of linen-loving shoppers have called in. Beautifully decorative, the store is well worth a visit.

The term was allegedly coined during the 2001 recession by Leonard Lauder, then the chairman of Estee Lauder Cosmetics. He noted that lipstick sales rose in the autumn of that year, indicating that women facing an uncertain economic environment turned to beauty products as an a ordable treat.
DID YOU KNOW…
Lipstick became a symbol of female emancipation in the early 1900s, bolstered by the endorsement of the su ragettes.
The swivel tube, used today by the majority of lipstick brands, was invented in 1923 by James Bruce Mason, Jr.
Lipstick materials continue to change as make-up becomes more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Now makeup sales are booming as masks have been abandoned, and lipstick has been leading the way in the USA and Europe, and probably in New Zealand too.

lift yourmood
Feeling down? Many simple activities and techniques can help to lift your mood naturally.
Eating chocolate is one. Both raw and dark chocolate contain phytochemicals that play a role in lifting mood. These include theobromine, anandamide, ca eine, and phenylethylamine, which are known to stimulate brain function and pleasure centres in the brain, positively a ecting your mood.
Start with 70 percent dark chocolate and work your way up to at least 85 percent cocoa. Chocolate lower than 85
percent is higher in sugar and will give you a very short-lived happy mood followed by a craving for more sugar. If you prefer you can eat cacao in all its forms, beans, nibs, powder, and paste.
Here are other mood enhancing tips:
1. SMILE EVEN WHEN YOU DON’T NEED TO. Smile at others, when alone, out walking or at work.
2. GET BACK TO NATURE. Take a walk in the park, smell the roses, run your fingers through the grass, and enjoy your surroundings. Leave your melancholy behind.
3. MINDFULNESS AND MEDITATION are simple practices that will help to lift your mood, and improve sleep quality.
4. START A JOURNAL. Expressing yourself on paper (or computer) can help to organise feelings and thoughts, and lead to answers and solutions to questions.
5. AVOID THE NEWS. Estimates are that 90 percent of all news headlines are negative, and negativity impacts how we feel. Tune out for a week and see what it feels like in your mind. Relax with a Metropol magazine instead.

wellness regime
Getting older doesn’t cause neurological conditions, although it does increase the chances. Some people with these conditions are young, even in their 30s. Ex-CEO of Ryman Healthcare, Simon Challies, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (a progressive nervous system disorder that a ects movement) in 2011. After his diagnosis, Simon consulted international specialists to learn more.
The specialists believed that people who ate healthily, slept well, exercised regularly, mentally challenged themselves, and kept up social contacts, lived well with their neurological disorders.
Significant data now proves this advice was right, showing that people who adopt a total wellness regime, covering exercise, diet, cognitive stimulation, education, and social connection, enjoy better lives.
In 2017, The Canterbury Brain Collective
Ltd (CBC) - a registered charity and partnership between Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Canterbury, and Dementia Canterbury - was established to develop a wellness centre to help local people living with neurological conditions.
Chairman Graeme Marriott is supported by fellow directors Simon Challies, Brendan Prendergast, Darryl Gri n, Anne-Marie Kite and Lindsey Rhodes, and independent advisers Malcolm Rickerby, Darron Charity and Diane Keenan.
In June of this year, the BrainTree wellness centre opened to the public.
General Manager Phil Marshall-Lee, says “BrainTree has started its journey well with plenty of public interest and local community support.” Organisations to also join the collective include Southern Stroke Foundation, Aspire Canterbury, Southern Music Therapy and Adult Conductive Education Trust.
THE BUILD
Designed by Wilson & Hill Architects, with Armitage Williams as lead builders and Darron Charity as the independent project director, the centre is an inviting space for everyone. It comprises tenant o ce spaces, a retail shop, gym, yoga and dance studio, large seminar/meeting rooms, a wholefoods cafe, an extensive outdoor deck and other internal meeting places.
Its $8 million total cost was almost entirely funded by private individuals, businesses and community trusts, with over one million given in-kind by consultants and contractors, a loan of one million from the Rātā Foundation, and minimal Government support.
CBC and the BrainTree collective wish to thank all the donors, funders, partners and supporters for their huge generosity so far to help make the centre a reality, and the first in New Zealand.
OPEN DAY
BrainTree will have its first public Open Day on Saturday 26 November, 10am to midday, with barista-made co ee and food available for purchase at the cafe. Parking is at 70 Langdons Road, Papanui.

treatable and beatable BOWEL CANCER
New Zealand has an internationally high rate of bowel cancer death – needlessly.
Pacific Radiology and the New Zealand Gut Foundation are working together to reduce New Zealand’s mortality rate from bowel cancer. Research conducted collectively with the Department of Population Health University of Otago last year, identified the need to remove barriers people have against monitoring their own gut-health and seeking help.
The organisations’ innovative responses to the findings offer ways for Kiwis to tackle this topic head-on. A key line of defence is timely diagnosis. Pacific Radiology, New Zealand’s largest private radiology provider, offers CT Colonography (CTC).
This minimally intrusive scanning method, usually available within a week of referral, can give peace of mind
quickly or identify if you need to get treatment started immediately.
Cancer survivor Jenny Cameron has nothing but praise for the CTC method.
“CTC is a quick and gentle method, which is important when you’re already unwell. I was able to keep my focus and energy where it needed to be. Crucially it detected bowel cancer involving the lymph nodes while I still had time to act - it gave me my second chance.”
Not only does CT Colonography help save lives, it takes pressure off our struggling hospital system. Importantly, it also shows beyond the bowel into all other organs in the abdomen, which a colonoscopy cannot do.
“Gaining access to a timely diagnosis can be lifesaving. If we as a radiology community can help our surgical and
gastroenterology colleagues by taking some of the pressure off colonoscopy waitlists, then let’s do it,” says Dr Adrian Balasingam, the Chief Medical Officer of Pacific Radiology, who has 20 years of experience in this area.
The other key line of defence against bowel cancer is yourself. So, the Gut Foundation’s colourful artwork hits the road again in December – the Travelling Port-A-Loo. Staff are on hand to share the message ‘know your normal’, with practical resources to help you monitor and ‘review your poo’.
These two organisations are united in their determination to remove barriers to lifesaving healthcare. It’s time to step outside our comfort zones and tackle this beatable disease.

Heartland Brew is blended and
roasted to meet the palate of New Zealanders, and with five di erent blends, there is plenty to choose from.
“The focus is on the people who enjoy great tasting co ee without all the fuss,” Deb explains, sharing their philosophy that co ee should be brewed the way each person prefers it; she doesn’t think co ee should be weighed and timed to get the best taste.
Deb believes that it’s getting the correct grind for your brewing equipment that can’t be compromised, and she encourages people to contact their roastery when unsure what grind will work best.

Inviting friends and family for lunch is a popular way to catch up, especially during the holiday season when there’s more time to prepare, and to socialise.
SETTING
THE SCENE
Whether you’re having two or 20 guests, setting the table doesn’t have to be a time consuming task. Planning is one of the pillars to hosting an enjoyable, care-free lunch. A couple of days is good, but impromptu also works such as with a spur-of-the-moment barbecue where everyone pitches in. Gone are the days when you have to make everything yourself, although if you enjoy cooking, creating and entertaining, you still can.
HERE ARE SOME IDEAS FROM METROPOL: DECIDE WHEN, WHERE – indoors, outdoors, at the beach, in your front paddock – and how many guests, and invite them.
SORT THE STYLE OF DINING – bu et, casual, formal, a theme, and then the menu. Bu et style makes it easy for guests to help themselves at larger gatherings, while plated is better for smaller a airs.
KEEP IT SIMPLE. Often less is best, such as hors d’oeuvres or an antipasto platter to start, a main course with summer salads, and a dessert platter of chocolates, fresh fruit and cheeses. CALL IN THE HELP. If you don’t have the time or inclination, have it catered. Christchurch has numerous catering firms, and you’ll find some of the best on our pages. If you really want to make it easy on yourself, pick up the phone.
ALTERNATIVELY YOU COULD COMBINE A FEW FRESH STORE-BOUGHT ITEMS, with a few of your favourite dishes. SIMPLE WORKS FOR TABLE SETTINGS TOO Try a crisp white cloth, sparking glasses and cutlery, and jars of fresh flowers.
DON’T FORGET THE DRINKS, bottles of bubbles, bowls of punch and jugs of cocktails work well for the festive season, with plenty of ice-cold water on hand too.

Tis the season to be jolly, and with that comes celebrating Christmas, New Year and anything else you fancy.
Of course, to do all that means stocking the wine cupboard, the cocktail cabinet, and ensuring there is plenty of ice on ice.
Celebration drinking is an ancient tradition, although no-one knows exactly when it began. The ancient Egyptians made beer and wine, the ancient Chinese made wine from rice and grapes, the Mayans made pulque from fermented corn, the Celts got tipsy on mead, and the Mongols drank kumis from fermented mare’s milk.
No matter your ethnicity, or your heritage, you will find plenty to celebrate with this festive season at Big Daddy’s Liquor.
Cheers to one and all.

Roughly cut the fish into 1cm cubes. In a bowl, combine the fish, salt and pepper and let it rest for a couple of minutes to give the fish a firm texture. Add the garlic, ginger, red chilli, red onion, and celery to the fish, and mix well.
Add the lime juice and the ice cubes. Stir for a few seconds and let it rest for about two minutes (the acidity of the lime will start to cook the fish meat slightly. The ice will keep the ceviche cold and will also balance the acidity of the preparation).

Seamless
Gone are the days when displaying your quality technology was the craze. Today the best technology fits seamlessly into your life, or better yet invisibly.
Invisible speakers (above) are one solution to obnoxious black boxes lurking in the corners of curated spaces. Installed into walls throughout a home, the speakers are painted over to ensure they are completely concealed. The speakers are then able to be controlled by keypads, or a smart device.
In Christchurch, Soundline Audio is the solution to your needs, specialising in
completely customised audio and visual.
The company’s award-winning team takes the time to listen and to find the ideal fix to all your tech needs. Additionally, its innovative audio showrooms and theatres allow you to experience first-hand any of their high-class audio options before you purchase.
“There is no excuse to put up with the terrible sound of a boom box, when with our 40 years of experience and modern products we can o er you a superior sound system that either complements your interior design or completely disappears from view,” says Terry Wyatt, who runs and
technology
co-owns Soundline Audio.
“Our showroom features working examples of some of the bespoke solutions we provide. Our installation service provides the expert knowledge to get the best performance.”
Technology is always evolving, and Soundline Audio can help you expand or upgrade your sound system to ensure you always have the best possible audio. Stop by their impressive showroom on 329 Madras Street or visit the website.

Pet for apresent pets
So many hope that on Christmas morning one of their presents under the tree might let out a bark or meow.
Pets are a wonderful addition to a household, and every year many animals are gifted as a special Christmas present.
Although giving a pet as a gift may seem like a straightto-the-heart gesture, it is something that needs to be considered in-depth. New Zealand animal shelter HUHA shares that, sadly, the number of pets being given up for adoption has been rising over the last few years.
This is sometimes due to first-time owners not realising the extent of what goes into caring for a pet. Before you decide to gift a pet this Christmas, here are some important points to take into consideration.
• Ensure your recipient really wants a pet. Don’t just go o of a passing comment or the fact that they love animals.
• Are you the right person to be choosing a pet for the recipient? Consider if this needs to be a joint decision, for instance with a parent or parents.
• Understand the recipient’s lifestyle and ability to care for the pet long-term. Can they commit to the responsibility?
• There are years of financial commitments that pets require, these need to be considered.
• Speak to other close friends or family to double-check this is the right ‘gift’ for your recipient at this time in their life.

Your pet can enjoy the best of both worlds - indoors and outdoors - at Sharna’s Dog Care, where they o er daily care and grooming services.
The care centre is full of heart, named after owner Keryn Ashworth’s Newfoundland, who sadly passed away soon after the opening.
“Dogs just love coming to us for their grooming as they get to have have fun playing with the dogs in our day care before their bath and grooming.
“We ensure all dogs are nurtured, stimulated and have so much fun, and we cater for dogs of all sizes, including large breeds,” says Keryn.
She adds that unlike many other centres, dogs are free to roam in both indoor and outdoor spaces.
BENEFITS OF DAY CARE INCLUDE:
SOCIALISATION In a safe environment with supervision, your dog will get to interact with an entire range of personalities and learn how to play properly. This is crucial for puppies.
EXERCISE Do you feed your pooch a few too many tidbits from your plate? Dog day care can counteract this, by providing dogs with nearly all-day exercise. Additionally the exercise and dog-to-dog communication will encourage positive behaviour. It will also help to reduce unwanted chewing, jumping, and digging, which are usually brought on by boredom.

Gardening is a hobby for some, a passion for others, and it can even be a chore. The health benefits are well recorded, with studies having shown it is good physical activity for all ages, boosts your mental well-being, and can help stimulate your sense of touch, smell and sight.
Let’s not forget that gardens add appeal to a property.
Keeping a garden looking good is an ongoing occupation, yet it can be made easier with proper landscaping right from the start.
Landscaping can cost from $5000 to more than $100,000, depending on your
budget. Experts recommend setting aside 10 percent of the value of your home for landscaping to be carried out at the time of the build.
Having proper landscaping done will add value to your property, let you enjoy your outdoor space sooner, and create something nice to look at, during all four seasons with the proper plants and trees in place. Some property owners have a landscaping plan drawn up and work on it bit by bit, to create a beautiful space. Others sit back and watch the professionals develop it for them.
There’s no right or wrong, but if you want a garden that works for you, and the climatic conditions of the area you
live in, than seeing a professional is well worthwhile.
Selecting the right shrubs, grasses and flowers is important depending on the style of garden you want, so a wander around your neighbourhood looking at what is thriving in other gardens will help.
As will deciding on a style of garden that suits the property and the gardener-to-be. A cottage garden full of pretty blooms might look lovely, however they are a lot of hard work. By comparison, plants that multiply, such as hostas, usually look good, need less care and help fill spaces.
If you’re short on ideas, head to your local nurseries and plant suppliers. They will be able to tell you what works where.

Japanese design proudly refers to thousands of years of traditional art while also often being considered the epitome of what’s contemporary and modern.
Japan has a diverse artisanal history and an incomparable attention to quality due to the cultural belief that what you create is a direct reflection of you and your family’s honour.
In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi is a worldview centred on the acceptance of imperfection. It celebrates the beauty of imperfections with a simultaneous aim to rid one’s surroundings of all that isn’t useful.
Wabi-sabi has a lot in common with minimalist modernism, but it’s more intuitive, asymmetric, warm and fluid.
It looks to keep the essence of a design without losing the poetry. Clean, but not sterile. Simple, yet smart.
Natural timber stains, distressed plaster walls and muted colours are all commonplace and tie into the wabi-sabi aesthetic. It embraces things that look poor but can still be expensive, which is the opposite of what most of the world
wants; something that looks expensive but is cheap.
In this home o ce, a high ceiling, a wall clad in tongue-and-groove panelling painted in Resene Quarter Karaka and the shallow grid shelf painted in Resene Settlement all bring strong verticality and geometry.
As a counterpoint, a few circular décor items have been included such as the round dishes on the shelf, the curvaceous vase on the desk and the round side table painted in Resene Teak.
The desk painted in Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne enamel harkens back to traditional Japanese lacquerware.
The timber floor stained in Resene Colorwood Uluru and ply wall stained in Resene Colorwood Pickled Bean have been included as reminders of nature.
Together, these items create just the right amount of contrast and balance for a space that feels both zen-like and authentically Japanese.

Unique to New Zealand, it will provide young people with mental health needs and services, including supported housing.
The Youth Hub Trust is raising an additional $15 million, to build a second supported housing wing for young people, a community centre with places for recreation and creativity, and rooftop vegetable gardens.
The Government-funded Stage One of the project, a supported housing wing and o ce block for youth organisations (who
will be housed on-site) has been financed through the Covid-19 shovel-ready fund.
Naylor Love is the main building contractor and Anglican Care gifted use of the central city site at 109 Salisbury Street.
Site clearing works began in August 2022 and Stage One is scheduled for opening by mid-2024. The facility is expected to be completed in 2027.
Trust chair Dame Sue Bagshaw says, “Youth Hub Christchurch aims to be a turning point in the lives of our city’s young people aged 10-25.
“We could not be more excited, proud and grateful to have ‘boots on the ground’ and diggers at work after 10 long years of planning, persistence and fundraising.”
She says what sets the Youth Hub apart is its supported housing facilities.
“These will be able to accommodate 40 young people for anywhere from three to 18 months, during which time they’ll be assisted with their health, employment, catch-up education and given the vital support they need to transition into independent living.”

Support growth
There are many ways we can help facilitate this, one of which is ensuring the city has a vibrant innovation ecosystem.
And we are making progress — Christchurch has just jumped an astounding 168 places in Startup Blink’s 2022 Global StartUp Ecosystem index to make the global top 250.
So how did we get here? The city had a good base of strong ideas and promising technologies but was struggling to transform those into productive economic outcomes.
It took some hard mahi to reduce silos, promote collaboration and critical mass in growth sectors and connect people to the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, incubators
and accelerators that can help transform good ideas into successful businesses.
Our jump up the rankings proves investing in this ecosystem was the right call.
We support Ministry of Awesome’s work to deliver start-up incubators, as well as UC’s ThincLab business accelerators and the work of the HTK Group to help businesses to grow and thrive.
This support is key in developing home-grown start-ups, which have the potential to grow into high-growth, highwage businesses, maybe even Christchurch’s next unicorn. This new ranking is very timely as two weeks ago MoA celebrated their 10-year anniversary. Congratulations to them on that milestone.

Important focus
Ōtautahi Christchurch is fortunate to have a number of businesses leading the way in sustainability –including our airport – the first port of call for many of our clients and their guests – and we are proud to also be among those playing our part in this area.
For us, having a solid sustainability plan in place was a given because we know it’s a key consideration – along with health, safety and security – for many people when booking events, particularly those coming from overseas.
It’s why we chose to align ourselves with the Toitū Enviromark programme – for which we recently received Gold recertification and a nomination for Exceptional Achievement in Environmental Management – and with Qualmark,
New Zealand tourism’s o cial quality assurance organisation.
It’s also why we have partnered with fantastic local organisations such as Foodbank Canterbury, City Care, The Just Dirt Trust and the Canterbury Community Garden Association to donate either our excess food, or the “soil food” generated by our onsite dehydrator.
This takes the excess food that is unable to be donated and turns it into a nutrient rich plant food.
Internationally, the feedback that we are receiving is that visitors perceive Christchurch as both an environmentally conscious and safe city.
Moving forward, It is important that we preserve both these factors for the long-term benefit of our city and residents.

Unsung heroes
The time in the wards was an eye-opener.
From the time the condition was first identified through to being discharged a week later, there was much to observe about life “on the inside.”
First, when the chips are down the system responds, quickly and e ectively. Those of us lucky enough to live in Canterbury should never take our health system for granted.
When you really need it, it is there. That is not always the case elsewhere across the country, or around the world. Second, there are literally thousands of people working hard to keep things moving.
Of course the clinical sta are pivotal, but so too are the orderlies, the cleaners, the providers of food, security, administration sta , maintenance, and many others.
A hospital, especially a large one, is a highly complex machine with a myriad of moving parts that are all interacting and all dependant on committed people doing good work together, every day and night.
Unless that is experienced first-hand, it’s very easy to take it for granted, or worse, complain about a system that is coping as well as it can under enormous and sustained pressure.
It is clear that our hospitals are seriously under resourced, resulting in frustration, stress, delays and blockages.
That frustrates everyone but is a subject for another day. My point is that we should be grateful to the often unsung heroes who dedicate themselves to our health and wellbeing.
By the way, thanks to them, it all turned out OK for that person very close to me.
A privilege
When you start a new job you often face a big learning curve, and I’ve certainly had a lot to get my head around during the past six weeks.
One of my priorities has been getting to know the new councillors and getting everyone working together as a team.
I want us all pulling the rope in the same direction because I am determined to make Christchurch the best place to live, work, invest, and play in New Zealand.
I think we’re on the right track to achieving that.
I’m lucky that as Mayor I get to go to lots of events and to chat with many di erent people. I love getting their take on how
Christchurch is going. Generally, people are pretty positive.
During Cup Day at Addington, and the launch of the Fast5 netball world series at Christchurch Arena, I spoke to numerous visitors to Christchurch. They love the new-look central city and what’s going on here.
I have to say that one of the best things I have done since becoming Mayor was my first Citizenship Ceremony. Chrissy and I welcomed 363 new Kiwis from 51 di erent countries.
They were so happy to become New Zealanders and we were delighted to be part of their special day.
A hard slog is involved in being Mayor, but it is a great privilege.

A Christchurch designer took top honours top in the 2022 ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards, announced recently.
The supreme award was for a uniquely West Coast bach, designed by Mitchell Coll of Fabric. The bach titled ‘Biv Punakaiki’ is a reinterpretation of a historic gold miners hut, but with all the modern facilities to warmly welcome modern-day travellers to the West Coast.
Designed as a collaboration between Mitchell and a Hong Kong based architect, the building is rented as a high-end, short-
term accommodation and is the first in a series of buildings.
CEO of Architectural Designers New Zealand, Keryn Davis, said Mitchell Coll’s project was a magnificent bach to enjoy the West Coast bush, while also getting a taste of award-winning architectural design. In addition to Coll’s Supreme win, across the country there were seven national winners. The winners are Pippin Wright-Stow of F3 Design, Gareth Ritchie
of Archco Architecture, Marcus Stufkens of Stufkens+Chambers Architects, Mark Callander of Creative Arch, Jon McAlpine of TGA Ltd, Werner Naudé of DCA Architects of Transformation and Ben Gilpin of Gil-plans Architecture.
Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ) is a leading professional body for architectural designers and architects in New Zealand. Entries are received from members throughout the country.

Award-winning kitchen design
Specifying ‘form follows function’ whilst maintaining an elegant aesthetic, the goal for this project was to have a kitchen that stood out while also being silently sophisticated.
Jaden Allworthy of Allworthy Design more than rose to the challenge, using only black finishes with a white marble look engineered stone splash back and bench
tops in the primary kitchen area. Bates Joinery worked closely with Jaden to bring this ‘tuxedo kitchen’ to life, and won the Best Region Award for Canterbury in the NZ Master Joiner Annual Excellence Awards for 2022.
“The kitchen is finished in Prime Laminate Black Velvet Soft Matt, which brings the elegant feel with its soft touch finish,” says Jaden, “and a favourite element is the
Archant Aoraki 550-10 black eco granite sink, undermounted in the island top. An eye-catching feature in this kitchen is the SG Calacatta Gold engineered stone splash back that is vein matched to the bench top by the skilled team at Shane Boyd Granite Benchtops.

HILLVIEW CONSTRUCTION STRIKING SITE SOLUTION
On a narrow, 13 metre site, this cleverly constructed five bedroom home wowed the judges to win a Top 100 spot and a gold award in the 2022 Registered Master Builders national House of the Year Awards.
Entered in the New Homes $2 million to $4 million category by Hillview Construction, the build also won a gold award in the Canterbury regional finals. Constructed with a folder roof form that rises up from the entry over the kitchen, living spaces and back down towards the west, its unique design makes the outdoor landscape visible from the entrance right through to the living space.
The design of the striking 371sqm home takes you on a journey through the living space to prized views across Christchurch city.
Expanding angles are its defining feature. On the upper level, a decked
area is bordered by frameless glass balustrades to capitalise on the expansive views. The stunning vista can also be enjoyed on the lower deck where a spa pool and outdoor dining area create a welcoming evening setting.
The steel theme, combined with carefully considered use of colour and feature walls throughout the property, creates a dynamic and engaging interior environment. Particularly noteworthy is the steel on the sides of the kitchen island and the banister in the entrance. The template for the banister was laser cut with a design that represents the topography of Burnt Hill, which is visible from the deck.

No Time to Party
What is it about the month of November that has everyone rushing around, rechecking calendars and contemplating an upcoming search for the family Christmas tree?
November is a countdown month and everything about it is geared around activity, momentum and, in our industry, results.
People want results – and good ones. There’s also a push to be either sold or settled into property before Christmas and contracts must be carefully worded to allow enough working days to accommodate this.
It’s always busy, perhaps one of the busiest months, although this year’s a little different because things have changed.
Change is a powerful determinant: it excites some and cripples others, and although you may wish it hasn’t occurred, like time itself, it’s hard to stop.
Our market has adjusted to accommodate several new elements, and these are creating the changes I’m witnessing every day.
The biggest change is that The Party is Over.
The party being the market we experienced last year and up until February of this one.
That incredible abandon with which people purchased new property for huge figures off the back of exceptionally low interest rates has gone.
If, as an owner selling, you believe it hasn’t and your property will somehow escape this market realignment, then you will most likely be disappointed.
I say ‘most likely’ because occasionally premiums occur and they do so especially in the auction rooms, but these properties are usually exceptional. Beautifully presented, in locations that are highly sought after and possessing an ‘X’ factor or a big potential gain.
In this market you should be represented by a real estate professional deeply committed to your agenda whilst being brave enough to challenge any beliefs you have that aren’t helpful.
These can include: the market hasn’t changed at all; there’s never any problem with a home that doesn’t have a cavity system; open homes don’t work; and I have to get ‘X’ dollars because I’m moving to Auckland and property values are higher than here.
If this sounds familiar, it is, and it can take courage to try to address issues like these when emotion and money requirements collide. I happen to believe – having worked with thousands of owners – that all of us, myself included, want the best possible price for owners and our current market has got a lot still going for it. You just have to be realistic whilst maintaining a sense of optimism.
So, what’s realistic? Prices, as I mentioned, have pegged back from last year, but not so much that all those gains achieved in 2020 and
2021 have been eroded.
Auctions are still working and delivering that most beautiful of components: an unconditional sale. With increasing numbers of offers either falling over or being renegotiated at the last minute, this is a critical point.
I’ve already mentioned open homes, and I do so in the knowledge that consultants who say they aren’t needed or that only do one a week need to be put on notice.
In this market, everything is needed. Extra open days, marketing that includes motivation because that draws attention, regular reviews and meetings with your chosen professional, patience and commitment. Be happy you reside in Christchurch and not Wellington or Auckland!
There you have it, I’ve provided a current state of the market, your market and mine.
Next year, who knows? Some of the written rhetoric says it could get more difficult, whilst others say the reverse.
Time will tell.
Whatever you’re up to in November, make every moment count and, if you’re like me, get that Christmas tree up early!

An amazing Avonside build has added to its accolades by being in the Top 100 homes in the Registered Master Builders 2022 House of the Year Awards.
The house, constructed by John Garlick Builders, was also judged Overall Winner and won gold status, in the Canterbury Regional category for the $2m to $4m new homes.
The brief was for an eco and sustainable home with e cient functioning. Thermally broken windows, and double walls provided extra sound and temperature insulation. The tight, narrow section for the 282sqm South Architects design meant the majority of work was onsite. The cedar-framed natural and white-painted exterior and Gaboon plywood interior required forward planning to implement the customised detailing.
Constructed onsite were the main sectioned window, sweeping hand-constructed cedar gable, and hand-cut Cedar fins providing structure, aesthetics and privacy.
BUILD finely detailed superbly joinery crafted
Director Kade Atkinson project-managed alongside the company’s original founder.
“It was John’s very last house - and he placed a meticulous eye over it,” says Kade.
“It’s unique - a handcrafted masterpiece by craftsman tradesmen. Their attention to detail pulled o the intricate and technically complex geometric elements.”

Attention to detail inside and out, and quality craftsmanship, created an award-winning Christchurch home.
This Avonside Drive build was in the Top 100 of the 2022 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards, and overall winner in the annual awards Canterbury Regional category for the $2m to $4m new homes. Instrumental in that win was local company, Joinery by Design.
From small beginnings, Joinery by Design has crafted a reputation for customer satisfaction and including personal touches that make each project unique.
The team at Joinery by Design run a modern, computerised factory where traditional skills are still a part of their everyday lives. “We are not mass producers of kitchen cabinetry but produce quality, built to measure kitchens as well as windows, doors, stairs, wardrobes and feature joinery,” they say.
The company crafted the joinery for the John Garlick Builder’s Avonside Drive project, including the feature stairs, bathroom and kitchen elements. The project site and design angles often meant working onsite to implement the customised detailing.
Award judges complimented the workmanship of the building, comparing it to a work of art. They found “beauty and bespoke detail wherever you look – the angles of the rooms, the fittings, geometric facets of the kitchen island, Gaboon plywood panels.”

Haymakers Crescent is the work of family-owned Norrell Building Ltd. Built and customised specially for a family of mum, dad and four boys, a standout feature is a dramatic stone veneer wall on entrance, with an equally impressive, towering 2400mm woodgrain plasma door open into the extensive interior.
Grandeur continues with the stone wall leading to the huge pavilion-style main living area, where stonework rises more than four metres high to meet the ceiling.
It wraps all sides of the wall, enclosing a central double-sided gas fire embellished with Cerano hearths and grey ironbark mantelpieces.
Inside the statement piece is the vaulted ceiling, meeting at the axis of each gable – a complex feat and credit to the building team.
Highly polished concrete floors reflect the light in the living area, which opens onto an expansive outdoor area – the capacious swimming pool takes centre stage here.
No amenities have been excluded, with the 361 sqm, five-bedroom home featuring
a media room and a television room, two bathrooms, powder room and a separate toilet. The garage is big enough for a gym. Entertaining has been well considered, with a spacious kitchen and a dedicated bar.
Norrell Building Limited is a family owned and operated company that’s been in business since 1992.
“Owner-run and small doesn’t mean we’re short on enthusiasm, commitment and expertise – quite the contrary,” says owner Justin Norrell. “Every member of our team is enthusiastic and dedicated to doing a top-notch job.”

IN BRIEF
Heazlewood
Humans have been tinkering with plumbing since historic times. Taking water and waste water from A to B, heating it, cooling it, storing it, and experimenting with creating pressure. Queen Elizabeth I banished Sir John Harrington from Court for telling racy stories.
With time on his hands he went home and created the first flushing toilet –“the John”.
While 500 year-old plumbing is generally not an issue for Nigel Patterson, Director of Finn Plumbing, he and his team are experts in updating plumbing for historic homes and buildings.
“We have just completed a large renovation of a significant city home, together with fitting out the modern architectural extension,” says Nigel, “and we are making a start on a 100 year old home in Mt Pleasant.”
Solar, gas, and central heating are specialities of the team, making them a go-to choice for modern homes, small
commercial, and high-end architectural projects. “We are happy doing everything from relatively minor to large jobs, and we cover Ashburton, Banks Peninsula, to Rangiora and Pegasus. Challenges in both modern projects and old di cult to work with plumbing are our forte,” says Nigel.
