LET’S EXPLORE DIFFERENCES OF THE WORLD The word geography comes from the Greek “Geos” means land and “Grafia” means general view, therefore geography is the description of the Earth.

This science and also Geography as a school subject studies the ways of relationship between humans and their physical environment. Thanks to it we know continents, countries and seas. It is related to the study of astronomy, geology, natural sciences, economics and history. All this makes us think that geography also studies society, and therefore different cultures of the world. At school we have friends from other countries, we participate in international projects. That makes us feel good because we are happy to share our cultural heritage and we can learn new things, other customs, another culture, foreign languages. It enriches and expand our horizons. Studying geography helps us to value importance of taking care of the environment and to be aware of problems such as global warming, pollution, water scarcity and how to solve them. Recycling, not wasting water, thus preserving our environment.

In the globalized world in which we live, in a moment we can go anywhere. Will you come with us? Eugènia Fernández Rodríguez

NICOLAS STENO (1638–1686) He was a Danish scientist. In 1666 a giant white shark was caught on the coast of Tuscany. Stenos noticed the great similarity between the teeth of the shark and the „stone tongues“ (fossils with healing properties) and deduced importance of the movements of the level of the sea for the formation of sediments and marine fossils. It was the origin of geology. María Jesús Ocaña Ramírez, Spain JUAN SEBASTIÁN ELCANO (1476–1526) He was a famous Spanish sailor. WINDOW TO SCHOOL

SANT BOI DE LLOBREGAT (Spain) Our school’s motto for this year is “Around the world”. We have been working on this theme during the cultural week. We have learnt about different countries, continents, cultures. The most interesting and fun activity was the QR Quest. We worked in small groups. Using a QR reader application, the fourth grade students tried to find QR codes stuck on the walls and some of them in hidden places. Then they had to fill in some tables with the information they got such as the extension, the capital city, the official language or colors of the flag. 6

It was a very entertaining activity. We discovered a lot of things about African countries. As we worked in groups we had to work together as a team. Using new technologies we also practiced different ways to get information. It was a very motivating activity because we had to move freely throughout the school - the codes were placed in the halls in a disorderly manner. Josep Cotonat Espinola

ČAKOVEC (Croatia) Near the end of the school year, our fourthgraders go on a school excursion which we call School in nature. That is a multi-day trip to visit natural, cultural, historical, sports and technical centers of our country – most often on the coast of our Adriatic sea. The main goal of this type of extracurricular class is to bind school subjects in immediate reality. The program contains three basic areas:

- In the evening it is time for entertainment. Theme parties with games and dancing are usually organised for children. In conclusion, our School in nature provides fun and educational activities and beautiful memories of completing first educational period. Petra Žganec

MOST (Czech Republic) Once a week we have an optional school subject called Geocaching. During autumn and spring we often go out for lessons and look for “treasures”. We have found almost all of them hidden around our school. We also create our own ones - sometimes a Geography teacher does, sometimes some of us. You can see one of them in the picture. We usually look for them by GPS, azimuth or just by photos. There is always a sweet surprise inside and some other things. In winter we sometimes create maps on the computer or send postcards with people from all over the world. We like this school subject a lot. Anna Doubková, Anna Žuravljová, Eliška Bystrá - Educational component includes walks and tours of places, buildings and monuments, field trips or activities on the beach. The goal is to acquaint pupils with our coastal terrain, climate, plants, animals and to find out what people do in that part of country and to get to know the coastal tourism. - Sports activities are mostly swimming and water sports. 7
