WORD OR TWO ABOUT MATHEMATICS What is Mathematics? Is it a science, a school subject, trouble for most of pupils or miraculous land of adventure for some of them, or…?

Without Math, life would be difficult: we would not be able to weigh or measure anything; it would be impossible to pay in different currencies or to solve any challenging problem – including performing space flights. Earlier the children realize it is hard (impossible, even!) to do anything without Math, fewer problems they will have with it – and vice versa. If they accept Math in early age as a challenge, they will handle it easily and upgrade their mathematical knowledge level. If they learn how to solve math crossword puzzles, Sudoku and so on, they will not even feel that they have made extra effort, but they will certainly enrich their spirit. When we discover the beauty of fractions and decimal numbers, we are opening ourselves to architecture, medicine and space exploration – depending on how much we want to delve into the sea of numbers.

If we understand Mathematics as a game, we will quickly and easily learn its content and enrich our mind, and if we resist, then the problem increases and it seems to us that the burden becomes unbearable. And in the end – a question for you: How many children must one at least have so that each of the children has a brother and a sister? If you think the answer is three, you are not really a genuine mathematician. If the answer is four, there is hope for you to improve your relationship with Math. Jovanka Trbojević, Croatia

COOL BRAINS ADAM RIES (1492–1559) This German mathematician is not known for making a major discovery. He taught German people especially children. Ries described calculating on the lines of a calculating board, a kind of abacus. He wanted to educate the youth and teach the lower social layers how to trade properly by using Maths. Aggelos Fragkiadoulakis, Greece DAVID CALLE PARRILLA (born 1972) He is Spanish telecommunications engineer. In 2005 he founded his own academy in Madrid. He realised that the school hours in the academy were not enough for the students, so he decided to use YouTube as a pedagogical platform. By Forbes magazine he is considered as one of the hundred most creative people worldwide. Marcel Hoherz, Germany AGNER KRARUP ERLANG (1879–1929) Danish mathematician and statistician, who invented the fields of traffic engineering and queueing theory. His early work in scrutinizing the use of local, exchange and trunk telephone line usage in a small community led to the creation of the Erlang formula, which became a basic element of telecommunication network studies. Timon Kozar, Croatia 4

HYPATIA (370–415) She was the first female mathematician in the world. She has signed up to history by constructing astrolabium, hydrometer and hydroscope. She also calculated planetary positions. However, we also remember her violent death. When her enemy Cyril of Alexandria won the throne, the fanatical crowd of several hundreds of his funs attacked her. They brutally killed her and broke up her body with the sharp edges of the broken roof tiles. Marek Radimák, Czech Republic MILAN HEJNY (born 1936) He is famous Czech mathematician and pedagogue. He thinks that children should find their own ways to the goal and teachers should not correct them all the time, but to give information and knowledge how to reach the goal. They should support their pupils and become an effective facilitator. His main idea is: “The path that leads to the result becomes increasingly important than the result itself.” Yisha Zeng, Spain ROGER JOSEPH BOSCOVICH (1711–1787) He was a very talented man from Croatia. He was a man of many professions as a physicist, an astronomer, a mathematician and lots of others. He found out how to calculate the equator of a planet. He wrote more than 28 books and not all of them were about astronomy. He also wrote about poetry and architecture. Jessia Nguyen, Denmark

WINDOW TO SCHOOL

STRAHONINEC (Croatia) The Evening of Mathematics is a set of interactive workshops that encourages the development of a pupil ’s positive attitude towards Mathematics. It is organized every December and it starts at the same time in every participating school, kindergarten and college. Croatian Mathematical Society is the organizer and the teachers choose and prepare materials for team work for pupils and their parents. So, once a year, parents come to school with their children and spend quality and fun time resolving math problems or playing interesting games. 6

Participating in fun activities reveals the often forgotten fun side of Math, creating new ideas about what Math is and what it is about, and proves that mathematical problems, even without knowing your own talent, are all successfully resolved on a daily basis. The main sponsor of Mathematics Evenings is The Institute for Development and Innovation of Young People. It is the proof that effort in this project is recognized and supported. Ana Horvat

In the 10th classes, one of the most important topics is trigonometry with the calculation of sizes in general triangles. The use of interactive boards can be helpful to determine different sizes like angles and side lengths of triangles as comprehensible as possible for the students or to draw triangles exactly according to specifications.

Every year the fifth and sixth grade students do a school trip to the Cornellà Museum of Mathematics. First, we visit the exhibition in the first floor where there are mathematical games such as mirror games, puzzles and optical illusions. After the visit, we participate in a quest (similar to a treasure hunt) outside, at Can Mercader Park. We solve mathematical problems following clues on a map. Each correct answer give us a letter and with these letters in the correct order we could form three mathematical questions. The result give us the numbers of the combination to open a mysterious box. The sixth group do a different activity. They work on the construction of Leonardo’s domes using different geometric shapes. Ainara Romero García

Interactive boards have various additional functions, e.g. the geotriangle, which can be very helpful during construction and measurement. On the photos you can see examples how the interactive board can support the lessons. Diana Doll, Jolina Scheller

DOES HARD WORK PAY OFF? One day a snail started climbing a 10m tall tree and reached its top doing this strange route: during the day it climbs 3m up, and at night it goes down 2m. How many days does it need to reach the top?
