SMS (electronic text messaging) The basic principles governing Spanish SMS abbreviations are similar to those governing English SMS. Certain words or syllables can be represented by letters or numbers that sound the same but take up less space. Also, points, accents, and other diacritics are omitted altogether. For example, the syllable ‘-ca’ can be replaced by ‘k’, the word ‘por’ by ‘x’, the syllable or conjunction ‘que’ by ‘q’ and the syllable ‘es-’ at the start of a word can be substituted by ‘s’. Another way of shortening words is simply to omit certain letters, especially vowels.
For example, ‘bastante’ becomes ‘bstnt’, ‘gente’ becomes ‘gnt’, and ‘hola’ can be replaced by ‘hl’. As in English, ‘emoticons’ are very popular, and some of the more established ones are included in the table below.
