Thisclassisdecidedlyinterdisciplinary–usingtheassignedtextsasprimarysources whilealsoreflectingonthepedagogicalvalueofstudyingAmericanpoliticsfromthe standpointofyoungwomenʼslives.

Thiscourseexploresgirlsʼstories(broadlyconceived)asprimarydocumentsfor understandingmeaningsofrace,racialidentity,andlivedracialexperiencesandinvestigates howgirlsʼstoriesareusedbyyoungwomenastoolsofpoliticalactionandorganizingwhile beingattentivetohowthesestoriescanbeusedverydifferentlybyothers.Theclassexplores multipleexamplesofhowgirlsʼstoriesoperateasscholarlyandpublicpedagogy.Thiscourse focusesontheUnitedStatesinthe20thand21stcenturies.

Studentsareexpectedtoreadassignedmaterialsthoroughlyandbepreparedforextensive, detailedconversationaboutkeythemesandideas. Thiscoursehasasubstantialwriting component.

LEARNINGOBJECTIVES:

Studentswillcriticallyengageawiderangeofscholarlyandliterarytextsaddressingthelivesofgirlsand youngwomen. Manyofthesetextsarewrittenbyandaboutgirls/youngwomeninmarginalizedracial, ethnic,religiousorlinguisticcommunities. Becausemanyofthesegirls/youngwomenexperienceadditional vulnerabilities,studentswilllearnhowtoanalyzewaysthatintersectionalidentitiesaffectlifeexperiences.

Studentswillbecomefamiliarwithbroadthemesandapproachestosocialscientific,historical,literary,and pedagogicalresearchaboutrace,gender,andethnicity.

Studentswilldevelopskillsofcriticalanalysisandpracticalproblemsolving.

Studentswillbeintroducedtomultiplecontestedideasforunderstandingtheconnectionsbetweenpersonal identitiesandthe politicalworld.

StudentswilldevelopfamiliaritywithhistoryandscholarshiponAmericangirls

Studentswilldevelopskillsofcriticalanalysisandscholarlyreflection.

Studentswillgaincompetencywithcollegelevelanalysis,speaking,andwriting.

LateAssignmentPolicy

AllstudentshaveTWOFREEPASSES tobeusedonanyassignmentsexceptthefinalpaper. ThismeansanyTWO(2)assignmentcanbeturnedinupto48hourslatewithnoquestions askedandnonegativeconsequencesforthegrade.Aerthetwo(2)FREEPASSESareused, anyassignmentsubmittedlatewillbesubjecttothelateassignmentpolicy.
