ThisseminarexploresAmericanFirstLadiesaspoliticalandsocialactors.Ourprimary questionis,whatdoesAmericanhistoryandpoliticslooklikewhentoldthroughthestoriesof womenwithgreataccesstopowerbutwithlittleformalpoweroftheirown?Wewilltracethe evolutionoftheroleofFirstLadyandexplorehowindividualwomenwhohaveplayedthis rolehaveunderstooditandadaptedit. Studentsareexpectedtoreadassignedmaterials thoroughlyandbepreparedforextensive,detailedconversationaboutkeythemesandideas. Thiscoursehasasubstantialwritingcomponent.

LEARNINGOBJECTIVES:

StudentswillcriticallyengageawiderangeofscholarlyandliterarytextsaddressingthelivesofAmericaʼs FirstLadies.Thesearetextsbothwrittenaboutandwrittenbythesewomen.Studentswilldevelopskillsof criticalassessmentofprimaryandsecondary historical documentsasawindowtounderstandingAmerican politics.

Studentswillbecomefamiliarwithbroadthemesandapproachestosocialscientific,historical,literary,and pedagogicalstudyofAmericaʼsFirstLadies.

Studentswillbeintroducedtomultiplecontestedideasforunderstandingtheconnectionsbetweenpersonal identitiesandthe politicalworld.

StudentswilldevelopfamiliaritywithhistoryandscholarshiponAmericanFirstLadies.

Studentswilldevelopskillsofcriticalanalysisandscholarlyreflection.

Studentswillgaincompetencywithcollegelevelanalysis,speaking,andwriting.

AllstudentshaveONEFREELATEPASS tobeusedonanyassignmentsexceptthefinal paper.ThismeansanyONE(1)assignmentcanbeturnedinupto48hourslatewithno questionsaskedandnonegativeconsequencesforthegrade.AertheFREEPASSis used, anyassignmentsubmittedlatewillbesubjecttothelateassignmentpolicy.
