ThiscourseexaminestheintersectionofmotherhoodandpoliticsintheUnitedStateswithafocuson contemporaryAmericanpolitics.Thecoursewillincludesome groundingin19thand20thcentury womenʼspoliticalhistory.Wewillconsiderthepoliticsofmotherhoodinvariousforms,including the relevanceofmotherhoodidentityinthepoliticalchoicesofwomen;theculturalandpoliticalbattles surroundingreproductivejustice;thecomplicatedwaysthatmotherhoodisrepresentedinpopular culture;andtheintersectionsofrace,class,sexualorientation,genderidentity, anddisabilitywiththe socialandpoliticalexperiences ofmotherhood Thiscourserequiresclosereadingofassignedtexts, carefulandoriginalanalysisofkeyideas,classparticipation,andwrittenanalysis Studentswill engagethecourseideasthrougha“mirrorsandwindows”pedagogy,whichrequiresthemtoreflect ontheirownexperiences,assumptions,andideasofmotherhood(mirrors)andtoempathetically engagewithexperiences,assumptions,andideasofmotherhooddifferentfromtheirown(windows)
