The project consisted of the renovation of a bungalow existing in QuĂŠbec city, Canada. The owners wished to adapt their residence to their new lifestyle and the building needed a face-lift. Besides the addition of a complete floor and a garage, the reorganization of facades was carefully thought. To pull the maximum of the natural luminosity and the views on their spacious and wooded ground, the owners wished to open the inside of the residence on the outside. The dining room so opens on a terrace and big openings allow to appreciate the landscape.

www.hatem.ca

HATEM+D The kitchen, which is in area opened on the dining room, also takes advantage of big openings and distinguishes itself by a wide island and a very minimalist style. The integrated furniture hides a shower-room and a wide meat safe. The addition of a floor allowed the creation of three vast bedrooms. The master chamber consists of an independent module combining a wide walk-in and a shower-room. This room also takes advantage of a balcony towards the back favouring a place for the quiet pondering over the wood. A big hallway was added in front of the residence and makes the link between this one and its new garage. The hallway, generous and open, throws a great deal of light at the heart of the project. As regards the architecture of facades, openings and materials were completely rethought. A cover of pale grey wood was installed at the level of the main block and a mixture of fibrocement and black bricks was installed on the block of horizontal reception. This set of simple volume created a dynamism in facade, the whole remaining sober and elegant. The landscaping was thought to preserve a maximum of existing elements. Rocks discovered during the works were moved in various places on the site. Also, three mature trees were considered during the elaboration of the concept and preserved. Today, their foliage allows a magnificent play of shadow and light on facades.

New Online Waterproofing CPD Newton Waterproofing Systems recently filmed Commercial Director Toby Champion presenting the RIBA Approved Double Points CPD ‘Structural Waterproofing Design Strategies to BS8102:2009’ in our training facilities. The presentation is 20 minutes long and we are offering it to architects and specifiers as an alternative to booking a CPD at their premises. There are a number of advantages with this approach: architects can watch the presentation in a time convenient to them, they can forward it to their colleagues to watch and they can refer to it again at a later date. When the architect has watched the CPD, they will email us with the names of all those who have watched the CPD and we will issue them their RIBA certificates.

Bespoke Residential & Commercial Environmentally Friendly Development, Energy Efficient, Modular Buildings

DI-NOC Architectural Finishes Deliver First Class Results

Low Carbon Construction, based in Portsmouth, Hampshire, manufactures buildings, both residential and commercial, using Kingspan TEK SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) in modular format. The modules, once constructed in our factory, are transported to any UK site and craned into position. Architects and developers are embracing this fast-track method of build as it reduces site costs and site disruption and delivers to the end user an incredibly energy efficient building consuming up to 70% less energy than that of a traditionally built property.

Innovatively crafted, decorative surface finishes from 3M have been used to refresh service counters as part of a Post Office Network Transformation Project involving 6,500 main and local category outlets. An estimated 5,000 metres of easy to apply and highly durable DI-NOC Architectural Finishes have been installed by leading corporate signage specialist Sign 2000, to refurbish all of the service counters at these sites rather than having to meet the high cost of replacement, thereby enabling savings to be made by the Post Office. DI-NOC offers additional benefits including the ease with which the films can be applied and purposely removed as required.

Fibrelite Composite Covers Prove Ideal Solution for New Storm Water Tank in Wales #coveringtheworld! The Fibrelite design and technical team recently helped overcome a number of potential problems for a construction company installing a storm water attenuation tank to alleviate serious flooding on a housing development in Gwersyllt, North Wales. On-site infrastructure changes included the building of a large underground tank to store rainwater during a deluge until slowrelease back into the waste water network downstream was deemed safe. Multiple Requirements including Non-Slip, Easy Access David Holmes, Technical Director at Fibrelite, explained: “The tank comprised a 3mx13m chamber with a fixed structural beam running down the centre so covers were needed over a large area and had to be quickly removable by water board operatives for regular maintenance and emergency work.” “In addition, given the siting of the tank in a residential area, the covers had to be both secure and safe to walk across with a negligible environmental impact, especially as the area is also home to the great crested newt, a protected species. The Composite Solution Lightweight, bolt-down, medium-duty composite trench covers were quickly identified as a solution to the various difficulties. And the specialist anti-slip material incorporated into the manufacturing process as standard also proved beneficial, as it meant that this relatively large area of covers would be safe for residents to cross on a daily basis. David Holmes added: “Covers were supplied in a modular arrangement to fit the challenging entrance specifications which allowed us to provide safe and easy access to the chamber via selected areas - a job that can be completed by just two workers using our specialist lifting handles; whereas a traditionally-made concrete or metal cover would have required dedicated lifting equipment.”

Fit-and-Forget – The Maintenance-Free Solution Fibrelite composite covers are available in a range of sizes and load ratings. Designed to be a “fit-and-forget” product, they are maintenance-free, lightweight, durable and very strong as a matter of course. Naturally inert, they have no impact on the environment where they are installed. Custom Sizes Available Custom-made trench covering solutions are available on request which means that dimensions, internal stiffeners and fibrearchitecture can be altered to optimize the performance of each panel based on project-specific design criteria. Coloured Covers for Easy Identification Fibrelite composite covers can also be moulded in virtually any colour or colour-combination and as the pigment is added into the resin during manufacture, there are no problems with the colour scratching or fading over time. This means that covers can incorporate logos and/or be colour-coded to match a facility’s branding or even to identify the specific underground service that can be accessed via a particular cover. About Fibrelite Founded on a tradition of quality and innovation, Fibrelite has been at the forefront of composite technology since 1980. The first ever composite manhole cover was designed by Fibrelite for petrol stations, to eliminate health and safety issues associated with traditional metal covers. Today, Fibrelite is established as a leading world player in its specialist field, with a global reputation for high quality products, increasingly specified as an alternative to heavier metal and concrete options for both new construction and retrofit work across all major industries. To find out more about how composite access covers can resolve specific onsite problems please visit: www.fibrelite.com/i-case-studies

Anti Slip Floor Treatment SHANGRI-LA at THE SHARD, LONDON At the newly opened Shangri-la Hotel in London, all the marble shower floors have been treated by SLIPSTOP.

F

or over 30 years SLIPSTOP, based at Coalville in Leicestershire has been helping to prevent slips and accidents in industry, commerce, leisure and even on luxurious cruise liners. Now the company is campaigning to prevent slippery ceramic tiled floors from being replaced in an effort to help the environment. Hundreds of thousands of square metres of flooring have already been treated by the company to make them anti-slip, thus preventing thousands of accidents to staff and members of the public. Slippery floors are the largest single cause of accidents and cost millions of pounds in claims every year. Yet many millions more are spent in replacing shiny glazed ceramic and porcelain floors when all that is required is a specialised application by SLIPSTOP. Technical Director Terje Brodahl explained: “Building owners, architects and specifiers are replacing thousands of square metres

of ceramic and porcelain floor tiles throughout the UK just because they present a slip problem. Tiles are very durable and offer many qualities not found in other materials. Even so, old tiles are often replaced with inferior products, just because they have become slippery. We have a treatment that is quick, safe and extremely economical as well as being eco-friendly. Our anti-slip treatments eliminate accidents at a fraction of the cost of replacement”. “Effective under dry, wet and even greasy conditions, the SLIPSTOP process, that is guaranteed for five years, also removes most stains and calcium deposits and is approved by the Health and Safety Executive. It is good to see more and more architects and building owners choosing treatment before replacement,” he added. Don’t be too sure about your insurer! SLIPSTOP was recently called in by a company that had to

pay out tens of thousands of pounds for a slip accident, as its own insurance company refused to pay compensation because the problem had been highlighted in a previous Health and Safety Audit. SLIPSTOP was able to make the floor safe for less than £2,000 and since the treatment was carried out there has not been one single accident. Sarah Hannah, Sales Manager for SLIPSTOP, explained: ‘The situation with this company proves yet again that prevention is better than cure. We want to raise the level of awareness amongst companies.’ ‘What we offer is a permanent solution to most types of slippery floors. One single application is guaranteed for five years and the product is even environmentally friendly. It creates a microstructure on the floor’s surface leaving it safe even when wet or oily. World’s largest passivhaus scheme uses Schöck The picturesque German city of Heidelberg is residentially very popular, but has no room for expansion, and the spectacular solution is to build a completely new district – the Bahnstadt. The 286 acre area that was once Heidelberg's rail freight yards sees a €2 billion initiative, claimed to be the largest passivhaus development anywhere. By 2022 it will provide living space for around 5000 residents and all buildings, not just residential properties, will meet advanced passivhaus standards. Balconies are an important feature of the Bahnstadt residential apartments, but they have not always been a popular choice in the context of high efficiency passivhaus design. That has changed with the Schöck Isokorb type XT structural thermal break unit. This latest generation product for concreteto-concrete applications offers such a high level of insulation that the Passivhaus Institute in Darmstadt

The Bahnstadt residential development is open and spacious . has awarded it the “low thermal bridge construction” certificate, confirming its suitability for passivhaus construction. Thousands of type XT units are incorporated into the Bahnstadt development. The units offer designers a variety of design options, including the capability to construct stepped height balconies, with increased fire protection also taken into account. The full Schöck Isokorb range allows connections to be made between concrete-to-concrete, concrete-to-steel and steel-to-steel – and in the UK, all units meet full compliance with all relevant building regulations, while also providing BBA Certification and LABC Registration. For your free copy of the new ‘Thermal Bridging Guide’ or the Schöck Specifiers Guide contact the company on 01865 290 890 or visit www.schoeck.co.uk

Vision London:

The Architectural Showcase Showcasing the latest building products and technology for design, interiors, art and architecture, Vision London 2015 opens its doors for two days on June 2 at London’s Olympia, providing the opportunity to check out its raft of products and solutions. There’s also a highly informative and worthwhile programme of seminars. Vision London brings communities together to discuss, debate and showcase the latest innovations and developments in architecture, design and the built environment. Over 100 organisations are exhibiting their new and inventive solutions that facilitate the creation of better building design. The event’s extensive speaker programme has gathered together some 100 influential industry figures to speak on a range of topics under the four prime themes of Future Materials & Systems, Technology, ‘Innovation in Architecture & Design and Building for Health & Wellness. Among the raft of highly informative seminar sessions, Future Housing is a prime topic with the UK now facing pressing housing issues. Architects and designers are developing solutions that are practical and affordable, designed with community in mind.

Tuesday Seminars:

Tuesday’s Innovations in Architecture & Design sessions include Designing Out Crime and Planning for Crime Prevention at 10.15am. Presented by Secured by Design, the UK wide police initiative, the seminar provides information and guidance in key areas. Topics include Police involvement with the Housing Standards Review, the organisation’s commercial and homes guidance documents and the new National Building Approval scheme that brings a simplified route to SBD compliance for developers. At 10.55am, Arup Foresight Associate Josef Hargrave presents his keynote talk on Smart & Resilient spaces – Exploring the future of the Built Environment. Smart Cities, at 1.15pm, looks at how we generate enough connectivity and data to develop a truly ‘smart’ built environment. Pioneers in this area discuss how IOT technology is increasingly being embedded, looking at benefits from energy efficiency, to remote maintenance to better health. The sessions also address how data is brought together and made sense of, and also considers security risk. Future Materials seminars on Tuesday include Façade Evolution

at 10.15am. Jointly branded with CAB in the UK, this session looks at the latest thinking/ research on glazed façades, covering an update on material sustainability and responsible sourcing, through to the latest in innovation and installation. Looking at how London and other world cities are using CLT, cross-laminated timber, for city regeneration, Stora Enso delivers its fifth Future City, Future Wood series event at 11.45am. CLT is appropriate for large and small scale education and residential projects including medium high rise developments currently at 9~10 floors, where speed and ease of construction are key, with the bar set high for environmental and building performance targets. In the Technology Talks arena on Tuesday, Digital Fabricators at 12pm looks at how computers allied to manufacturing and fabrication have opened up new ways for designers to engage with building. 3D design software is now commonplace and we have moved beyond rapid prototyping to now directly 3D printing components. Robots can build components at full scale and a new level of complexity is possible, allowing visualisation, customisation and efficiency to be embraced in the same software program.

Healthy Residential Solutions in the Workshop & Talks seminars on Tuesday, 11am, focus on ventilation, with a review of regulations, what is needed and how to comply. Other topics include demand controlled ventilation and why this is important moving forwards, as well as night time and intense natural ventilation.

Wednesday Sessions:

Innovations in Architecture & Design sessions on Wednesday include Future Housing at 1pm. The seminar looks at how architects and designers are developing practical and affordable solutions designed with community in mind in view of the UK currently facing pressing housing issues. Case studies highlight the UK’s first amphibious and flood resilient home, designed to tackle increasing flood risk. There will also be a close look at social housing in Rotterdam, built around its own community school and where the children’s playground is at its heart. With the increasing search for more responsive, dynamic adaptable buildings and structures that can change over time, disassemble and relocate, Adaptive Architecture at 2.15pm, puts the problem under the microscope. The session looks at passive, material, mechanical and

active approaches in adaptive architecture, as most architecture is to a degree adaptive with components that allow change. How buildings should adapt over time and whether we need more resilient and dynamic building technologies is also under discussion. Future Materials sessions on Wednesday include Innovating with Low Impact Materials at 11.15am. It discusses how low impact materials can encourage the construction of low carbon healthy buildings and share knowledge about how best to use low impact materials. At 1.30pm, The CLT Engineer & Architect Masterclass launches Store Enso’s free CLT Engineer design software for efficient structural analysis for CLT structures. The software is heralded as the most advanced CLT program, constructed according to latest design standards and governing regulations in a variety of European countries. Vision London’s Technology Talks include the 10.15am session on Healthy Buildings, Healthy People. With emphasis on energy efficiency, the performance gap and now the circular economy, health and wellbeing remain at the centre of the push for improved resource efficiency.

With so much time spent indoors, it is essential that the industry delivers healthy buildings. The seminar introduces the work of UKIEG and reports on the Active Buildings research project. Green Walls & Living Roofs is the 10.15am Wednesday Workshop & Talks topic, presents the benefits and design possibilities of green roof and wall technology. The session addresses key issues and development and is particularly relevant in the light of increased interest in green infrastructure to make our cities healthy and more resilient. The latest R&D bringing this industry into the mainstream is on the agenda, including thermal benefits of living walls and a growing frame technology that can be used across diverse applications. L. McComber 01. Juliette aux combles - Transforming an attic into a bookcase - "Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed." Subtraction In approaching this project, we studied the composition of the existing building and identified multiple layers added to one another over time. These additions had compressed the living space since the original construction dating back to 1880. Inside the attic, we found that the current flat roof was built on top of a former sloped roof together reaching a thickness of over five feet which was mixed in with layers of tar. Through a subtraction process and by replacing the existing structure with new joists, we gained 5 feet of space, therefore making up a 13 foot height on the third floor. The space of the new master bedroom and artist studio gained in natural light with the integration of a ribbon window where the attic was.

Addition The floor is organized around a small volume wrapped by hemlock shelves obtained through the careful deconstruction of the roof structure. The patina of the aged wood is preserved and highlighted by contrast as the surroun- dings are composed of abstract white surfaces. The shelves winding around the volume seem to protect a secret. This volume is sliced in two by a tempered glass roof, bringing natural light into the marble tiled shower. Abstraction and texture If the main intervention unfolds on the top floor, several situations were identified throughout the house as opportu- nities for small interventions. Although textures vary, a white paint finish is applied in order to preserve

the original textures and the beauty of wooden structures while connecting their various expressions together. A tailored living space The changes introduced throughout the house support a contemporary family dynamic. By rethinking space dis- tribution and by integrating moving partitions, the house can adapt to everyday needs with new areas dedicated to children and parents and with added possibilities in terms of privacy. This project puts forward an intervention, which, despite its small scale, expresses with strength and sensitivity the expression of a local architecture. www.lmccomber.ca/en/projets/ juliette-aux-combles/

The SiTa Siphonic Roof DRainage SySTem “maDe in geRmany” inSTalleD in englanD, DRaining engliSh Rainfall

The huge construction of the Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd. (CCE) plant in Wakefield covers an area equal to 33 football fields, and is the largest and the most environmentally friendly fully-automatic bottling factory in Europe, it is a plant of superlatives. 6,000 cans of soft drinks and 3,200 PET bottles a minute can be produced here. The plant recently became accredited to the Energy-Management Standard ISO 50001 – the first of its kind in the world. Since 2009 the plant has been operating in line with the “Zero Waste to Landfill Principle” by either recycling waste or incineration. The complex was extended in 2013 with a new high-bay warehouse in order to optimise the storage capacity and logistic capability as well as to minimise transportation. The possibility to deliver directly to the customers will save in the future an average of approx. 500,000 miles ( 804,672 km) of road travel per year, in addition to saving the environment a lot of CO2 pollution.

No space wasted

In order to get the utmost out of the new warehouse capacity, the Architects decided to exploit the advantages of a Sita siphonic rainwater drainage system for the 6000 square metre flat roof. This would incorporate space-saving ceiling-mounted horizontal piping set almost parallel to the roof, allowing the maximum height of storage space for the racking. Frank Birwe, a technical design specialist at Sita Bauelemente GmbH, explains further: “In this way, racking space is not wasted. Another advantage is that fewer downpipes are necessary, and correspondingly, less pipework protection is required, which increases the useable floor area of the warehouse and with fewer downpipes, less underground piping is required and considerable savings in cost and effort are “achieved”

Working in free air

High-bay warehouses have a special construction feature. The building shell and roof are erected around the already standing racking construction. This poses particular challenges for the installation of the flat roof drainage. Suspended scaffolding, (attached to the track rails of the store-and-retrieve vehicle), could only be utilised in the aisles. The remaining work high above the floor was carried out by experienced industrial siphonic rainwater system installers from the specialist firm V-TECH Lochmann & Semmelmann GbR based in Dortmund. The project leader Thomas Glunz, who accompanied the installation work, said “The Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd. high-bay warehouse was a very tall building site. The technicians had to work, secured with harnesses connected to running safety ropes. It was an advantage for them that the pipes were made of polyethylene, and consequently were relatively light to handle, even in 5 metre lengths. Also, the high degree of prefabrication of the mounting system was appreciated by the team under these challenging conditions”. Mr. Cengiz Karadeniz, who is a key-account manager at Sita, commented: “The SitaDSS mounting system has been so designed that the complete fitting of the drainage pipes can be concluded with the minimum use of fixing tools. In a high-bay warehouse, the technicians are dependent on managing with fewer tools. The workplace is 35 meters above ground and only a limited amount of space is available for tools and equipment”.

On the right tracks

The SitaDSS rapid assembly technology for PE pipes proved itself on site in Wakefield as a dependable support for the installation team. Thanks to the SitaRail mounting rails with the prefabricated clamp pipe brackets, the 300 metres for the main drainage and 340 metres for the emergency drainage were fitted relatively quickly. Now 640 metres of PE pipeline and 32 Sita DSSProfi rainwater outlets are connected together to provide a highperformance siphonic rainwater drainage system which can hold its own against the infamous English rainfall. Because siphonic drainage systems function especially effectively with fully-filled pipes, it is sufficient to employ

Tel : (44) 01732 847320

pipes and formed parts with relatively small diameters – a fact which serves not only the static structure of the building, but also reduces the construction cost. Siphonic drainage systems are power plants which project water under pressure through pipelines. The mounting of those pipelines must therefore be given a significance which cannot be underestimated. The SitaDSS mounting system, which is typified by pipeline with rail guides and fixed-point fittings on pipes and building parts, holds the ceiling-mounted pipes of the siphonic rainwater drainage system securely at a defined distance from the roof construction. The provision of fixed points which fasten the pipeline at intervals of 5 metres as well as all branches to the rainwater outlets, ensure secure anchoring. Expansion of pipe length, through thermal effects, or sagging of the pipes, is prevented. The so-called “rocking” associated with siphonic systems working with high pressure is avoided by transferring unwanted movements safely into the anchor points.

Rainy, but not intensively rainy

In preparation for the project, the Sita calculation specialists who were to design, with the help of CAD programmes the layout plan of the main and emergency drainage became active. With a calculated rainfall r(5,5) of 320 l/s x ha and a century rainfall r(5/100) of 640 l/s x ha, the location Wakefield in Yorkshire counted as a “rainy” but not “intensively rainy” area. For the main drainage, 16 SitaDSS Profi DN 75 siphonic rainwater outlets with an extension element to accommodate the thickness of the thermal insulation were selected. They feed 183 litres of water every second into the underground drains. Because the warehouse is surrounded on three sides, the emergency drainage could not be designed with simple parapet spouts. Therefore the emergency rainwater drainage includes 16 further Sita rainwater outlets of the same type which are however equipped with additional accumulation elements for their special task. As soon as the water level, due to extreme rainfall on the roof rises above a defined accumulation height, they dispose the difference between the main rainwater drainage and the emergency rainwater drainage through a special emergency pipeline, which drains freely to an outside area of ground that may be flooded without concern. (It is regulated that emergency drainage systems must be separate from regular drainage systems and that the outflow may not be fed into regular drains). Every second, the emergency system can swallow up 183 litres of water, resulting in the roof being relieved of additional extra weight. The particular positioning of the new warehouse directly onto the existing building complex made it necessary to find a unique solution to piping the emergency rainwater away. Sita technical specialist Frank Birwe summarised: “Because no free run-off at the lowest-point axis was possible, the emergency drainage pipeline had to be led partially through the forward zone of the high-bay warehouse, this however posed no problem thanks to the horizontal positioning of the pipes in the Sita siphonic rainwater drainage system.“

Conclusion: a “watertight” system

The project in Wakefield was not only about delivering a perfectly functioning rainwater drainage system, but was also about establishing just-in-time international project logistics. The one-stop-one-shop concept of Sita proved to be convincing. From the CAD calculations for the effective Sita siphonic rainwater drainage system, to the Sita siphonic rainwater outlets, the piping, the fittings and everything was “made in Germany – made by Sita Bauelemente GmbH“, at Sita`s plant location in Rheda-Wiedenbrueck. One of their DSS Siphonic rainwater drainage systems is now taking care of the safe rainwater drainage of the English rain.

5 Real Reasons to Choose Steel We often get questions about comparisons of different materials. Very frequently the choice is between steel versus plastic or aluminum. Our choice at Lindab is, and has always been, steel. We will give you 5 real reasons to choose steel for your rainwater system rather than PVC or aluminum. Most of these arguments go for all steel systems, but we think that we add even more to this fantastic material. We have been processing steel for more than 50 years and we buy over 200 000 tonnes of steel every year, so we feel that we know what we are doing. We also put our products through rigorous testing. 1. Steel has the lowest carbon footprint of all rainwater systems materials

With steel you get a cost effective and environmental friendly installation that is 100 % recyclable. Our Rainline system is made from sheet steel, a raw material that has a natural place in today’s approach towards sustainability. 2. Steel stays in shape

Virtually all materials are affected by differences in temperature and grows and shrinks as the weather changes. Compared to aluminum and plastic, steel has a lot smaller movement factor. This means that your installation is much more likely to last as connections and fixation points won’t take such a beating as with other materials.

3. It’s really long lived

A rainwater system made of steel can last in excess of 70 years. To aid to the lifespan we rustproof the material with a 275 grams zinc coating. This gives the system a self-healing quality where scratches and cuts are automatically sealed by zinc ions that migrate to re-coat the uncovered steel. 4. Strong as steel

Steel is the foundation of all modern construction, and there is a reason for that. Steel is strong. Snow, hail, falling tree branches and other circumstances can easily break a rainwater system made from aluminum or plastic materials. And even though we recommend that you are careful during the installation, a steel system is much more heavy duty than its competitors.

5. Steel is actually cheaper than plastic or aluminum

The initial cost for a steel rainwater system is higher. We’re not saying that it’s not. But if you take into consideration the lifespan and maintenance needed for the respective systems, you actually save money. The lifecycle cost for a steel system is considerably lower than any other system out there. For more information contact Telephone – 0121 585 2780 or E-mail: rainline@lindab.co.uk

Crossed House / Clavel Arquitectos On a site in the higher part of a residential zone in the environs of Murcia is located the singular, crossed house with views to the adjacent mountains, the “Sierra de la Pila” and “Valle del Ricote”. From the ambiguity, being on a site of a future densely built-up area and at the same time enjoying today’s unsurpassable views, was born the idea of the project: to orientate the lower level of the house to the garden’s intimacy and grant to the user at the superior level the delight of its views considering future edification and the influence of solar radiation. This conceptual setup is materialized by a geometrical operation, the rotation of two elements, as if it were two construction toy blocks that are stacked and handled easily. The stacked oblong volumes, of a length of 20m and a depth of about 5m, are rotated by 35 degrees so that the extremes orientate to the most favored views and generate at the same time cantilevers of about 10m length. These cantilevers, together with the rotation between both volumes, provide the necessary sun protection of the facade and pool residence.

The expressive power of this formal configuration, very elementary in principle, is further enhanced by a subtle distinction between the two volumes: the edges are rounded according to the orientation of the main openings of each level reinforcing this way the autonomous nature of the volumes. Thus, on the ground floor rounded transversal edges frame the big opening to the southeast, upstairs such treatment is applied to the longitudinal edges framing the views of the rooms at each end of the volume. This also apparently reduces the contact surface between the two stacked volumes and reinforces the oblong nature of their geometrical form. The contact to the ground is solved using again the same mechanism of rotation. This time a third, buried volume corresponding to the pool deck rotates with respect to the two volumes of the house to resolve the transition between garden ground and dwelling. The surface’s treatment of the concrete volumes provides a contrast between the outside with a rough finish created by a shuttering of sand blasted pine strips and an interior of smooth finishes.

Since their inception in 1951, Jetmaster have been bringing warmth to homes all over the world. Famous for open fires, Jetmaster are an industry hallmark of quality and ambiance. Today, Jetmaster are again redefining the market with their high-efficiency wood stoves.

The technology is made possible through it’s highlyoptimised clearnburn system which they call “PureBurn.” Combustion air is superheated through the unit, then reintroduced back in to the main chamber, igniting unburnt carbon particulates in a secondary combustion. It results in increased efficiency and fewer harmful emissions in the atmosphere.

“Look at the fire,” says David Van Vuuren, Jetmaster’s marketing director. Jetmaster inset stoves have distinctively large windows that feature the whole fire.

You can choose the fuel that’s right for you — coal, briquettes or smokeless fuels — the 16i, 18i, 50i and 60i Jetmaster stoves are multi-fuel with only the large 70i inset stove requiring a drop-in basket to burn multi-fuel.

Many modern stoves boast about their fuel-burning efficiency but can’t keep their glass clean for long. Their windows quickly darken with soot, blocking the view of the fire. The glass of the Jetmaster stoves stay clean for longer and do so with large windows. An impressive feat. This is due to their airwash system: an extra thick curtain of preheated air is forced between the fuel bed and the window, ensuring the glass keeps clear. What’s the point of a fire you can’t see? HETAS guide 2015 qualifies the Jetmaster 18i as the most efficient 18 inch inset stove and the 60i the most efficient mid-size inset stove in the UK. What’s the secret? “Our PureBurn Technology keeps each stove burning at the highest efficiency,” says David. “They achieve blazing efficiencies up to 86%. The science works.”

Each stove is built in the UK according to rigorous quality standards. Jetmaster says they stand by the longevity of their inset stoves, giving them a 5-year guarantee when registered. Crafted lovingly in Hampshire, England. These are British made stoves designed for British homes. “People love these fires,” says David Van Vuuren, “and we’re listening to the demand and expanding the range.” That’s why there are now two new wood-only landscape versions: the 60i Low and the 70i Low. The view of the fire has remained a critical design element and this is now experienced through a wide panoramic view, lending to an almost cinematic feel of the fire. It’s a must watch. Beautiful fire, refined There’s nothing like a roaring wood stove warming your home. A Jetmaster stove delivers a welcoming warmth to your home that cannot be compared to gas or electric fires. No heating solution comes close to the ambiance of a log fire. Light up a Jetmaster and you’ll feel the difference. Crafted lovingly in Hampshire, England, Jetmaster stoves are British-made fires for British homes.

VERSATILE. SUSTAINABLE. MARMOLEUM MODULAR. It is not often a floor covering collection comes along that provides so many opportunities to play and experiment in such a dramatic fashion. Mix, match, combine or contrast - create your unique expression as the new Marmoleum modular collection from Forbo Flooring Systems offers the possibility to create the floor of your choice. Modularity surrounds us; it is reflected throughout the natural and man-made world, and in particular, urban architecture. So it was only time before an advanced floor covering collection would bridge the gap to allow for a step change in floor design. Marmoleum Modular turns designing with a sustainable floor covering on its head by providing a distinctive format that allows specifiers to easily combine and connect various shapes, sizes and colours of tiles to develop a completely new and exclusive flooring design.

It is a collection with a twist; with over 144 items, the variety of colours, designs and complimentary tile sizes opens up a whole new world of simple, accessible floor design. Including tiles in four sizes ranging from extra-large (75x50cm) to small (25x25cm) and in between, the medium format square and rectangular tiles (50x50cm and 50x25cm respectively) also complement the offer. Meanwhile two plank options (100x15cm and 100x25cm) provide even more choice, exclusive to the Lines range. The intriguing modular collection presents itself in four individual themes, enticing the designer to work with shade, colour, marble and lines - and to be inspired. Marmoleum modular shade is a range of concrete structures in cool and warm greys, complemented by the classic ‘black and white’, all presented in delicate steps of colour intensity and hues to create natural realistic stone and concrete patterns. At the heart of the collection, Marmoleum modular colour features fashionable pastels alongside

an eclectic and modern mix of colourful concrete varieties and a full spectrum of bright warm colours. Within the marble theme, a beautiful compendium of classic and contemporary marbled colours has been assembled to create a special mix and match dimension to any floor plan. Whilst the newest addition is Marmoleum modular lines that brings 15 fresh colours based on the popular Marmoleum Striato design, along with innovative ‘cross-grained’ tiles. The plank formats within this range are completely new to Marmoleum and as such immediately opens up a number of design options, from abstract linear designs to classic herringbone. Whether it is subtle nuances or stark contrasts, natural looking concrete or marbled floor designs, tonal progression or bold and vivid expressions of colour, experimentation is definitely encouraged. To help specifiers, Forbo has developed a

series of design ‘grids’ which can be used as part of its online Room Planner tool. These can be coloured online and demonstrates how design transforms into real floors in real environments. Julie Dempster, Marketing Manager at Forbo Flooring Systems explains: “The Marmoleum modular collection takes Marmoleum into new market sectors as the range offers a playful experiment with colour and structure. In this way, it is a completely new flooring concept that goes beyond the traditional offer, with no complicated design process or installation. “Marmoleum modular is also a wholly sustainable alternative to other modular design floors available in the market today, as it is made up of 88% natural raw materials, 76% rapidly renewable and 58% recycled content. With our new Topshield2 finish, the floor is ready for use immediately after installation and the modular tiles are easy to install and easy to clean – ticking every box.”

PREMIUM SURFACE TECHNOLOGY Now Available At Lathams

The innovative and highly textured range of premium, Thermo Structured Surface (TSS) decors - XyloCleaf - which offers a variety of wood grains, linens and other unique materials - is now available through James Latham.

The deep textures and intricate detail of XyloCleaf makes it difficult to distinguish from the real material it is designed to mimic and the portfolio includes 50 different colours and patterns, all of which come with ABS edging as standard.

Unlike anything else on the UK market, XyloCleaf is a highly original and exclusive range of decors which are created using a unique process of thermal fusing in which decorative papers are treated with melamine resins, that under heat and pressure become part of the panel itself, hence the term Thermo Structured Surface.

Paul Morson, James Latham’s Group Product Champion for Melamine said, ”XyloCleaf represents a new generation of panel product and one which offers extraordinary potential, delivering a complete solution of innovative products to suit all interior decorative tastes, trends and applications. I have no doubt at all that it will become a big success for us.”

This process provides not only a stunning end result, but also a product that is strong, durable and highly scratch and chemical resistant, meaning that as well as looking great, it will stand up to the toughest of challenges when used in high traffic areas. The sensational and inspiring new XyloCleaf collection is perfectly suited to premium domestic design schemes such as kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms as well as for wall panelling and furniture and it has already proved particularly popular within high end commercial, leisure and hotel specifications.

What the Colour of Your home SaYS about You

When it comes to interior colour schemes, we’re not short of choice. You can colour match paint to any hue, virtually pick ‘any shade under the sun’ for window blinds or curtains and, for the colour confident, even invest in furniture, like a kitchen, in vibrant reds, zingy greens and cobalt blues. But colour,“a property causing visual sensation”, not only evokes feelings and emotions within us, it’s a reflection of somebody’s real self. Our decision of what colours to surround ourselves with day in day out in our homes says a lot about our personality. Colour adviser for Betta Living Alwyn Human reveals the meanings behind your interior design colour choices.

Blue

Blue symbolises loyalty, trust and control. Those who choose blue are considered confident and dependable. No wonder it’s most peoples’ favorite colour! With all types of colour, there are variants within blue – from pale baby blue to strong electric and royal blues - but overall, blue is a calming, serene colour and people have been found to be more productive when in a blue room because they are calm and focused. Some say it can boost efficiency and intelligence.

existence and never desire much excitement, closing the door on the hustle and bustle of life to an impartial décor. Pale grey is a very calming colour, delivering a practical, tranquil environment, while darker shades of grey can denote a tendency towards power and authority. Grey is by far one of the most versatile colours and can be used as both a calming backdrop for a room or applied to make a dramatic statement when darker shades are used.

People who choose blue have a deep need for peace and harmony in their everyday life. They are sensitive to the needs of others and like to be needed.

Designer’s Tip: Amplify the punch in your grey room by adding bright accents or keep it calm with whites and soft neutrals.

Blue tones work best in bathrooms, studies and bedrooms. It’s also great for small rooms. Use similar tones on the walls, moldings and floor to merge the boundaries of the room. This creates the illusion of space.

The colour most closely connected with nature, green also says wealth, growth and generosity.

Designer’s Tip: use a blue with a warm undertone to stop the room from feeling cold.

Grey

Grey is associated with an air of neutrality. It’s a colour often favoured by those who are cool, conserved, composed and reliable, and people who like to be in control of their emotions. ‘Greys’ tend to be the middle of the road types and are simply seeking a contented life. You prefer a safe, secure and balanced

Green

It’s another calming colour and, being located at the centre of the color spectrum, it’s considered the pigment of balance, stability and restoration. In its softer forms, green helps us feel relaxed and refreshed. But bolder greens are the sign for ‘go’ – reflecting a person’s energy and natural love for life. If green is your favorite colour for the home, it says you’re practical and down-to-earth with a zest for life. Using green in the home instantly makes us feel connected to nature and the outdoors.

Using the correct shade will make the room feel like it continues outside the window. Designer’s Tip: When choosing green for your room draw inspiration from the tones you see outside.

Pink

If your home décor colour of choice is pink you are loving, kind and generous with an underlying need to be accepted and loved unconditionally. You are friendly and approachable, methodical and organised, although you can sometimes be rather flippant when the immature girly side of pink appears. For those who sway to the paler pink hues, you’re reflecting a warmth and softness others are drawn to. You are romantic and sensual and sensitive. More vibrant pinks represent your optimistic and positive outlook on life, you see the good in everyone. Pink inspires those who are surrounded by it, for its fun and energy. It reminds us that life is for living! Pink is best used in domestic spaces such as living rooms, dining rooms and children’s rooms. Warm colours like pink are thought to stimulate conversation and make people feel connected. Designer’s Tip: Pink can make a space feel small. This colour is best used in a space with large windows or that gets a lot of light.

Red

Red demands attention and having red in your home matches your energy and lust for life. You crave excitement and are action oriented. You were given your five senses for a reason - to use them to the full, including your ability to see red! Studies show that this colour actually raises heart rates and evokes emotion, so red rooms are not for those who feel the need to sit and chill, and who don’t want their visitors to either. If you choose red in the home you’re not a ‘sit on the fence’ kind of person – you know what you want and you’re confident in your choice, regardless whether others like it or not.

White

While not strictly a “colour” white is heavily used in the home and I can see why. It projects simplicity and independence. People who choose all white schemes tend to be assured, self-reliant and see the finer detail in objects and others. They are not influenced by the obvious but want a calm and beautiful life. Fans of white decors can be ‘neat freaks’ in the presentation of their home almost to the point of being fanatical; white isn’t for messy minds or clumsy clots. White rooms inspire positivity and clear thinking, a blank canvas with which to allow your imagination to flow.

Red used in living spaces will make a room feel opulent and welcoming. It also creates the perception of warmth, especially during the winter months.

The beauty of white is that it sets a natural backdrop and creates interest in any room. Using white in an open plan living space also resolves the flow of any interior by creating the perception of space.

Designer’s Tip: Set the tone to your home by painting your front door red.

Designer’s Tip: Add a touch of warmth and tranquility to your home by mixing shades of white.

Yellow

Brown

Yellow is the colour of happiness and sunlight, it says you are upbeat, friendly and creative. It is also reported to cause the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter chemical that contributes to a feeling of wellbeing and so can lift your spirits. The color also has the power to bring out creativity, but can be overpowering if too much is used. Whether light and airy or bold and bright, yellows really help to lift any room and bring in a renewed sense of vibrancy. It’s best used in bedrooms and bathrooms and is said to evoke a stress free environment. Designer’s Tip: Liven up your yellow room by adding contrasting black or sophisticated grey accents.

Wholesome brown shows you are honest, down-to-earth and with both feet planted firmly on the ground. You are steady and reliable and quietly confident. You are friendly and approachable, genuine and sincere. Brown is associated with earth tones, inspiring feelings of strength and growth. Brown furniture nods towards being connected to nature, it’s comforting and supportive. Brown is a colour best used in moderation and is naturally suited to smaller spaces. It blurs the perimeter of the room and makes it feel more cavernous. Brown rooms are dramatic and have a natural sense of opulence. Designer Tip: The trick to making a natural scheme interesting is to use contrasting textures, fabrics and accessories.

A DynAmic new Lighting SignAture for compLexe DeSjArDinS A new custom lighting design developed by Montreal based Lightemotion has made its mark in downtown Montreal. Working closely with the facilities team at Complexe Desjardins, Lightemotion has breathed new life into Montreal's largest mixed use development, totaling 4 million square feet. Located in the Quartier Des Spectacles and facing the recently renovated Place Des Arts, featuring an innovative lighting scheme designed by Lightemotion, Complexe Desjardins is the latest addition to the Quartier to include a dynamic and innovative lighting design strategy.

The client was interested in resolving numerous issues through a lighting design strategy for the interior retail concourse and two main entrances to the retail concourse. Lightemotion was selected to develop a distinctive new lighting scheme to create a warmer overall ambiance, be dynamic and programmable, reduce heating and cooling costs and produce a call to action from the street so pedestrians will enter the complex. One of the main features of the design is the ability for the client to create programmable and dynamic lighting effects that adapt to the time of day, season and activity within the space. Environmental sustainability was also

paramount in the lighting program to reduce hydro consumption, cooling and maintenance costs. We undertook an exhaustive research and mock-up program that recommended replacing the existing flood lights with a custom designed fixture. We conceived a bi-directional 140 watt LED lighting fixture that showcased the unique diamond coffered ceiling combined with a powerful down light to illuminate the entire shopping centre, adding much needed texture and nuance to the space. This also created unique floor pattern which enlivened the space enhanced intuitive wayfinding and also diminished the vastness of the space. “This lighting system not only provides a warmer ambience, with pre-programmed lighting that changes over the course of the day, but it is 67% more economical than the previous system and provides triple the lighting intensity at floor level!â€? explains François Roupinian, the founder and president of Lightemotion.

Custom Lighting Solution: To create a lighting ambience that is both friendly and dynamic, Lightemotion conceived a bidirectional LED (lightemitting diode) lighting fixture that the Montreal company Lumenpulse developed for this project. Composed of two elements (a frame equipped with RGB LEDs and a downward-directed directional flood), this brand-new fixture both directs coloured light upward as well as directing lighting downwards towards the floor. By installing one of these fixtures in each ceiling coffer, Lightemotion made it possible to create very subtle chromatic nuances that produce the effect of a path of colours covering the vault of the retail concourse. Outside, the marquees covering each of the building’s two entrances have also been provided with a lighting system that can project onto the ground a chromatic ambience creating a call to action to enter the retail concourse. The down lights provide 4 times more lux level than the previous fixtures while also creating a visually stimulating pattern on the floor eliminating the typical flat floodlight wash effect. The Urban Clock: Since the Complex is both an event space and shopping centre, there was a mandate to ensure the new fixtures provided a wide range of visual options. After a careful study of the traffic patterns based on time of day and activity, we developed an “Urban Clock” concept which uses

programmable DMX system to adapt the colours, tones, intensity and colour temperature. Mornings were a bright and energetic dynamic white scheme to help people start their day. For the lunch time rush we added warm colour tones to provide a luminotherapy effect, especially in the darker fall and winter months, and at night we selected darker tones in blues and greens to create a relaxing ambience for shopping. The custom fixtures were also used outside at each of the build¬ing’s entrances. By utilizing the same design principles and technologies as inside, the entrance lighting system projects onto the sidewalk creating a chromatic coloured am¬biance which compliments the lighting display inside. Environmental Stewardship: The lighting design does more than offer a daily show to visitors and a visual signature to Complexe Desjardins. It is also much more energy-efficient than the traditional 400-watt lighting fixtures that replaced. Using only 132 watts each, the new fixtures reduce energy consumption by 67%. Because they are also equipped with photoelectric cells, they are capable of automatically adjusting the lighting intensity and power consumption to compensate for the amount of natural light entering the concourse through two large curtain wall windows at each of the two main entrances.

Moorland Makes Its Mark On Energy Efficient Homes

NVELOPE Clads BREEAM Excellent Office

Cembrit Moorland fibre cement slates have contributed to a £2.1 million social housing scheme in Liverpool cutting its carbon emissions by two thirds and achieving Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4.. The six three-story and twelve two-story homes are designed by Richard King of John McCall Architects, a mixture of modern and traditional materials have been used on the new buildings to create a contemporary appearance which is in keeping with the surroundings. Fibre cement slates have a similarity to traditional natural slate but are more cost effective. It was for this reason, and the fact that the product is BREEAM A/A+ rated, that Cembrit’s Moorland slate was specified. Moorland is an attractive slate with a dressed edge, which is similar to the appearance of natural slates.

NVELOPE, the rainscreen cladding specialist has supplied its NV1 system to a recently built BREEAM Excellent rated office in Aberdeen. The vertical cladding support system has been applied to the five storey bespoke building, supporting approximately 3000 square metres of granite cladding. The 40,000 sq ft office space is part of the regeneration of the North Dee Business. The new office is the first building in Aberdeen to achieve BREEAM excellent rating under the 2011 regeneration scheme. “The main advantage of working with NVELOPE was the technical support, the product itself and the cost effective price.” says Derek Morgan, of GLASSOLUTIONS. “We have worked with NVELOPE on previous projects and not only do the systems look great, but you get extremely good value for money.

This new catalogue also sees the introduction of a fully guarded desktop Mini CNC machine for 2D and 3D engravings, photo images and routing projects. Ideal for the hobbyist or school.
