Wiedenmann / Maredo STrac
700 revolutionising turf tasks
he STrac is a practical pedestrian turf maintenance operating system that offers EIGHT processes.
Choose either an 8.5 hp Honda engine to power the STrac’s 700 hydraulic hitch or guiding handle. (Choose the 12.5 hp for the STrac720.) Just connect a dedicated ST task cassette head to the STrac’s hydraulic hitch, then the mechanical PTO drive and you are ready to go.
The STrac is light, fast and versatile and allows site-wide uniformity of care and presentation. Challenging spots such as high traffic or wet areas or, where a tractor is too heavy, suddenly are within reach.
Flexible wheel positions mean the rear wheels can be manoeuvred close to edges.
Cassettes, with a working width of 65 cm, are available for overseeding, aerating, scarifying, coring, fraise mowing, sand filling, sod cutting and seeding.
The ST120 SodCutter Uses a counterbalanced blade that slices smoothly. Minimal vibration ensures clean cut and ‘no lines’.
The ST160 CleanCutSandFiller creates a dry and healthy top layer without surface material. Injects dried sand to 20 mm.
The ST170 FlexFrase-Mower strips off turf layer to 20 mm, leaving a smooth surface to overseed. Ideal for removing bumps on goal mouths.
The ST200 Flex-Verticutter scarifies to 25 mm using carbide tipped blades with tool free adjustment. The blades counter rotate so material lifts tidily out the way.
ST230 HighSpeed-Corer relieves compaction, opening the top layer to 75 mm. Hole spacing is changed by amending forward speed. Multiple hollow and solid tine options.
The ST418 VibeDisc-Seeder has unique technology to plant and protect seed. This slit seeder doses seed 0 to -15 mm at as low as 2 g/m ² to 15 g / m². The seed box holds 6 kg of seed with disc seeder slit spacings at 42 mm.
The ST424 VibeSpikeSeeder is similar to the ST418 VibeDisc-Seeder but with a dimple seeder head, vibratory spikes creating dimple patterns for seed placement.

New Sales Manager signal
Wildwood’s ambitious growth plan
ames Bastian, managing director of Winchesterbased groundcare company Wildwood Machinery, says that the appointment of new Sales Manager, Rob Hogarth signals the company’s ambition to expand in geographic coverage and client sectors in 2025.
“This year, we’ve made significant progress in developing Wildwood Machinery with the goal of being the leading supplier of groundcare services in the South of England.”
“Our deal with leading machinery supplier INFINICUT®, our new, purpose-built headquarters, and the appointment of Rob Hogarth give us the platform to build further business with professional sports clubs, local authorities, schools and heritage properties,” says James.
Rob Hogarth brings 40 years of experience.
Wildwood Machinery’s newlyappointed Sales Manager, Rob Hogarth brings 25 years of experience working for golf clubs across the UK, including the prestigious Remedy Oak Golf Club in Dorset where he was responsible for the ‘grow-in’ of the new course.
Rob’s priorities at Wildwood will be to drive sales of groundcare equipment and after-sales service, and to build relationships with other suitable equipment manufacturers and clients.
Reesink and Toro combined for the quick winter win
here aren’t many quick wins in life, but Reesink and Toro certainly provide one when it comes to winter machinery maintenance.
Getting ready for winter means being prepared. The work is tougher and harder for machines, and that means parts are more likely to wear out, bend, crack or damage more easily and with more frequency. But there’s no need to experience a delay to work or unnecessary downtime. Here’s a genuine take on why.
Having the reliability of Reesink as a distributor means parts delivery within 24 hours to anywhere in the UK. That level of service reduces the amount of downtime incurred, as well as making life easier.

The work is tougher and harder for machines, and that means parts are more likely to wear out, bend, crack or damage more easily and with more frequency. But there’s no need to experience a delay to work or unnecessary downtime. Here’s a genuine take on why.
Rob started his greenkeeping career at his home town golf club in Peebles, rising to Head Greenkeeper at the tender age of 19 – the youngest in Scotland at the time. In 2016, Rob moved into sales, taking a Dubai-based opportunity to work across the GULF region, before returning to the UK in 2019 to work for Fairways Professional Groundcare as Sales Manager for Scotland.
“I’m very excited to be joining James and the team at Wildwood, and I’m looking forward to getting out to meet a lot of old faces and hopefully making a lot of new friendships,” says Rob.
“Wildwood Machinery has rapidly established a positive reputation since launching in 2022, and there is so much potential to build the business further with the foundations that James and his team have put in place.”
Rob Hogarth can be contacted on 07349 124 926 and rob@wildwoodmachinery.com www.wildwoodmachinery.com
The reassurance of having a genuine service don’t end there. It comes with a comprehensive stock reserve and local support. But significantly, customers can rely on the fact that they’re getting the genuine Toro part – and that’s a big distinction.
Going for the will-fit part means customers are not choosing the parts that are specifically built for the machine. Nor are they choosing the high-quality materials Toro is synonymous with to ensure maximum performance. Or indeed choosing parts that are rigorously tested to make sure they can withstand the daily stress that come with keeping a course or pitch in top condition.
Michael Hampton, Parts Manager at Reesink Turfcare says: “It’s
Getting ready for winter means being prepared and Reesink and Toro make that easy when it comes to machinery maintenance.
not possible to make winter machinery maintenance any easier than by choosing Reesink and Toro, so while the weather might be unpredictable something you can guarantee won’t be is the quality you get from Toro and the service and support you receive from Reesink.”
But the winter wins don’t stop there. Getting ready is as simple as ordering MVP kits in advance to cover over 100 different maintenance issues such as rebuilding rollers, replacing hydraulic hoses, filter kits or even overhauling cutting units. When packaged up in one handy box customers get all the required parts and save up to 20 percent
on the cost of buying the parts individually. And importantly, they are on the shelf ready to use.
And finally, never underestimate the power of simply being organised by planning in winter servicing now. After all, routine checks and preventing rather than curing problems is considerably cheaper than ad-hoc repairs and thanks to Reesink peace of mind this winter is guaranteed with its ReeAssure servicing plans and the option of three types for every budget and requirement level.

It’s tried and trusted Trilo’s – time and time again –for Gavin Jones
ith a remit of defence and public open spaces, Gavin Jones is one of five companies that make up the wider Nurture Group. Helping the team to deliver maintenance contracts on Ministry of Defence (MOD) sites across the southwest are a fleet of multi-functional units from Trilo the current compliment of three M8’s, one M10 and one S12 adding to a long list of reliable performance delivered by Trilo machines for over a decade.
Andy Mighall has been the Regional Manager for the southwest for the last 14 years and explains why the company comes back to Trilo time and time again. “We’ve run blowers, SG400’s and SU40’s in the past and where they would have primarily been purchased for leaf clearance, the newer units
give us the multi-functionality to conduct tasks year-round” he explains. “In our experience, there’s no other machines out there that combine the versatility and reliability we get from Trilo.”
The current fleet was procured over a two-year period from supporting dealers Lister Wilder, and now reside with teams based at five of the largest MOD sites across the region. “From October to March they’re utilised for leaf clearance, which is incredibly quick and efficient compared to alternative methods. Our new units offer the ability to control the Wanderhose from the cab which saves someone having to operate it manually and now frees that person up to do other tasks.”
Trilo’s Multipurpose (M) range enables the swift switching between shafts to conduct multiple maintenance tasks, all
with one machine, a feature which Gavin Jones utilise to the full! Andy continues, “We additionally purchased the scarifier and flail shafts which means that come the summer we can use the Trilo’s not only for site clearance and collection of arisings from large area grass cutting, but also to conduct those cut and collection tasks and/or scarification on areas such as the airfields.”
“Together with great efficiency and build quality, something we’ve also always had with Trilo is great back-up support from Listers and Vanmac’s Jeremy Vincent. On the delivery of the newest machine, Jeremy delivered full installation and familiarity training which means every operator has the knowledge and confidence to get the very best out of each machine.”

Training
he preparations for the new season begin in earnest now. The Christmas binges are long forgotten – although their legacy lives on and reminds us when we look in the mirror!
Those who know realise this period before spring starts in earnest is a great time to service the equipment, clean out the ‘mothballs’ from winterised machinery and make sure everyone has what they need for the season ahead.
Part of preparing a business and the people is ensuring training is researched, certificates checked and courses booked, but some courses are non-negotiable. Pesticide courses are a legal requirement – one of the few written into law. LANTRA and City & Guilds (NPTC) are the only two awarding bodies for pesticide courses in the UK – both are equally valid.
Cooper-Pegler & Berthoud sprayers, are championing the work of training centres and trainers in 2025. Richard Wheatcroft the National Account Manager, who has a training background, says: “the value of a trained workforce is hard to overstate and not just for legal reasons. Improved morale, lower insurance premiums, increased professionalism and pride in the job are just some of the extra benefits a business or club can reap”
Some pesticide courses can be done fully online, such as the Safe Use of Pesticides (commonly called PA1) but the majority of ‘PA’ units are trained and assessed in person.
Training centres offering pesticide courses and refresher courses are dotted around the country and they will vary in size, from regional Training Groups run by volounteers, to Colleges and professional, dedicated training companies. However there are also many freelance
trainers, not tied to a company, who will travel to site premises… the awarding bodies offer more info on their respective websites: www.NPTC.org.uk & www.Lantra.co.uk Lantra also offer a useful certificate and learner checker too: www.lantra.co.uk/certificatechecker. Or, for NPTC, ring the Support Team on 024 7685 7300
Here you’ll also find information on refresher courses and the guidance on how often a refresher should be done….weirdly they differ
www.cooper-pegler.com will post more information on training and training establishments on their website in the coming weeks and months.
Training is an investment for a business, group or club and it invests in the environment we work in; safe, trained application protects the worker and everything else in it too.

BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME)
The British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association is proud to welcome readers of the Groundskeeping Journal to Harrogate this January for the highly anticipated BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME). Renowned as Europe’s premier event for turf professionals, BTME has become a pivotal date on the groundskeeping calendar, offering unparalleled opportunities for education, networking and innovation.
This year’s event is already breaking records, with exhibitors set to showcase their products across five halls of the Harrogate Convention Centre. The 4,145m of space reserved by exhibitors by mid-December saw BTME
exceed the overall floor size of the 2024 edition. To accommodate the growing interest, BIGGA has introduced the Industry Launchpad, a platform designed to help first time exhibitors participate on a smaller scale while making their mark on the industry.
Education at the core of BTME
A cornerstone of BTME is the Continue to Learn education programme, which serves as a vital resource for those working in sports turf and golf course management. Since the 2025 programme was launched in October, demand for the programme has surged. By mid-December over 80% of the Continue to Learn: Classes sessions were sold out and more than 1,000 individual bookings secured. This milestone was reached faster than ever before, underscoring
the industry’s growing appetite for professional development.
This year’s programme features the most extensive lineup of free education sessions to date and Jim Croxton, BIGGA CEO, expressed his pride in the event’s continued growth, adding: “I’m incredibly proud of the BIGGA team, whose dedication and innovation has propelled BTME and Continue to Learn to new heights. Their commitment to creating an exceptional experience for our members and the wider turf industry has established BTME as a cornerstone of the golfing calendar that is growing in size and reputation each year.
“The strong support for Continue to Learn also highlights a positive shift in attitudes towards greenkeeper
education. The golf industry has a growing appetite for education and training and Continue to Learn and BTME are the ideal format for that to take place. This enthusiasm for professional development bodes well for the future of our sport and the industry as a whole.”

BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME)
TThe British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association is proud to welcome readers of the Groundskeeping Journal to Harrogate this January for the highly anticipated BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME).

Foley Grinders
W hy Foley Grinders
Are the Equipment Manager’s Choice
Maintaining turf equipment is about achieving precise, consistent cutting performance while maximizing longevity and reliability. For equipment managers and greens staff, spin and relief grinding are essential techniques to ensure reel mowers stay sharp and operational. Foley Grinders, with their advanced features and robust design, make both processes seamless, delivering unmatched precision, reliability, and ease of use.
Relief & Spin Grinding:
The Key Differences
Relief Grinding focuses on restoring and sharpening the relief angle on the back of each blade, reducing the contact area between the reel blades and the cutting unit. This decreases friction, improves cutting efficiency, and extends the life of the blades. Relief grinding also reduces the power needed to operate the mower, leading to lower energy consumption and operational costs.
Spin Grinding on the other hand, sharpens the entire cylindrical cutting edge of the reel. While spin grinding restores sharpness, combining it with relief grinding enhances efficiency and helps maintain original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications for optimal performance.
Foley’s grinders excel at both processes, providing equipment managers with the tools to keep reels performing at their best.

Discover the ‘Aspen Difference’ with a stop by stand 423 at BTME 2025
ith sustainability high on the agenda for many golf courses around the country, there has never been a better time to review all aspects of the greenkeeping operation –including the method of power.
Aspen Fuel is an alkylate petrol, 99% cleaner than traditional pump unleaded and offers a viable alternative for serviceable petrol-engined hand tools and equipment. Visitors to BTME 2025 can find out more as Aspen make their debut on stand 423.
Aspen Alkylate petrol offers numerous benefits to professional and commercial customers, making it a popular choice for those working in construction, landscaping and arboriculture, and already making a name for itself with golf courses around the world. Virtually free from sulphur, benzene and solvents, it reduces emissions and all-but eliminates odours –freeing operators from the headaches and other health implications this can cause.
Not only that, Aspen is also ethanol-free, protecting your machines during use and in storage, and extending engine life and reliability.
A growing list of UK courses have already made the switch to Aspen, including Newark Golf Club.
New airter® models and partnership promise to revolutionise active aeration
After encountering availability issues with pump fuel during COVID, the team trialled Aspen 2 and Aspen 4 in their machinery and have not looked back since. “It’s not until you incorporate it into the day to day operations that you really begin to appreciate the improvements
Aspen delivers for both the operators and the equipment.
The biggest benefit for me is its shelf-life, which has seen us get equipment out of the shed that has been dormant for a year and starts again with no trouble at all” explains Course Manager Alex Clarricoates.
“We use roughly 400 litres of the 4-stroke Aspen, and 200 litres of the 2-stroke each year, both delivered in 200 litre barrels and stored exactly
where we need it.” He continues, “Another benefit we’ve found is the Aspen 2 being pre-mixed which has eliminated issues we’ve experienced in the past where incorrect fuel to oil ratios have resulted in faults with some of our 2-stroke engines.”
Those wishing to trail Aspen alkylate petrol in their own businesses can now do so, risk-free, with Aspen’s moneyback guarantee. If you don’t ‘Experience the Difference’ by the end of your trial period, Aspen will refund you the cost difference compared to what you would have spent on pump fuel.
More details on this, and the full Aspen range, can be found by speaking to the technical team who will be available on stand 423 across the three-day show.
After more than three years in development, the airter® neo and airter® trike are set to revolutionise sports turf aeration, utilising high compressed air to not only break through surface compaction, but provide 100% biological and effective control of pests, root-damaging grubs and Tipula larvae (Leather Jackets).
The airter® neo 12140 is equipped with 12 lances making it ideal for large golf greens and football
pitches, which can be covered in less than three and a half hours. One of the largest models in the airter® range, it’s set to deliver high productivity without excess weight preventing any further, unnecessary compaction.
Designed for smaller areas such as golf greens, the airter® trike 8140 is an electrically-driven, self propelled unit featuring 8 lances. The working depth on both models can now be quickly and easily adjusted to suit operations between 8cm and 20cm in the ground.

025 sees an exciting shake up in the sustainable seed solutions available from DLF and visitors to stand 126 at BTME 2025 can be some of the first the find out what’s new.
Among the changes is the exciting introduction of Sybille – a new slender creeping red fescue cultivar, bringing its No.1 ranking for close mown turf to a number of mixtures across the updated Johnsons Sports Seed lineup. Also new is an expanded Ultrafine Rye range which promises fast establishment, high wear tolerance and aesthetic quality for the golf and bowls market.
In their pursuit for ever-improved sustainability, DLF have introduced Sybille slender creeping red fescue. With its high density and disease tolerance, Sybille helps to supress unwanted weeds and diseases, reducing the need for pesticides. Not just a good choice for the environment and your budget, Sybille features fine leaves and beautiful summer colour making it a top-class variety for low mown areas delivered with high visual quality.
Also of significant interest for turf managers is the expanded range of Johnsons Sports Seed Ultrafine Perennial Ryegrass (PRG) mixtures. Building on the success of J Ultrafine Rye 100, DLF has introduced additional 25% and 50% formulations to provide turf managers with versatile, sustainable options for golf and bowling greens. The incredibly high wear tolerance, bolstered by the exceptionally fine leaf and high shoot density of Duranova, also makes the Ultrafine PRG range ideal high-traffic areas like tees, fairways, pathways, tennis courts and cricket outfields.
Stand 126 is the place to learn more about other developments across the DLF portfolio, such as the increased UK wildflower production to support demand and the growth of their ProFlora and ColourBoost ranges which are ideal for increasing biodiversity and colour on the golf course. It is also where you can have your say in shaping seed mixtures of the future by taking part in DLF’s Disease Watch Programme. DLF are actively seeking feedback and insights on the types and severity of diseases you are witnessing to develop future research, trials and breeding programmes. Those that share their experiences are not only helping to improve the performance of seed mixtures of the future, they can also win some excellent prizes in the process.

Top quality topdressing tops the bill for GKB at BTME 2025
I finding top quality topdressing solutions is the question, visitors to BTME are guaranteed to find the answer on stand 644 as GKB Machines return to Harrogate. Before attendees have even stepped foot inside the exhibition halls, they’ll be able to see the mounted GKB SP100 parked outside of the Hall 6 entrance, with details of trailed and material-handling options all available by speaking with the GKB technical team.
With four different hopper capacities and trailed and mounted models, there’s a GKB Sandspreader to suit all surfaces. Delivering the ultimate versatility for broadcast topdressing, it is the fast and effective way to incorporate sand into greens, fairways and surrounding areas to assist in the breakdown of thatch, increase infiltration and create conditions for vigorous grass growth.
The GKB SP100 is the smallest unit in the range, offering a
1.0m3 hopper capacity and up to 10m spreading width making it ideal for tasks around the golf course. Moving up through the range are hopper capacities of 2.3m3, 3.0m3 and 4.0m3 – the larger SP400 models providing unrivalled productivity therefore making them a popular choice for the contractor market.
In addition to the SP range, GKB also offer three SPM models, combining all of the characteristics and qualities of the robust and reliable Sandspreader with the addition of a material handler –ideal for topping up bunkers.
If time is tight and conducting sand integration with other operations is what’s needed, then GKB have you covered here too with the renowned GKB Sandfiller! The Sandfiller is proof positive that multi-tasking doesn’t have to result in a compromise in quality, tackling the issues of organic matter, compaction, drainage and sward density in a single pass.
The Sandfiller utilises the principles of GKB’s much-praised Combinator, with carbide blades effectively slitting the surface, removing vegetation and creating channels to be easily refilled with dried sand, or a combination of sand and seed, creating a clean, play-ready finish.
Visitors will be able to see solutions from across GKB’s portfolio for natural turf in action on stand 644’s high-impact video wall, so be sure to stop by this January, grab some GKB giveaways and find out more.

Two new INFINICUT® mowers
set
to take centre stage at BTME 2025
Twelve months on from the launch of the INFINICUT® 22” FL golf cutting unit at BTME 2024, the company is set to return to Harrogate in January 2025 with two new patent-pending additions to the range. The new design of the INFINICUT® 22” FX and 26” FX features a brand-new cutting system and attachment/removal method offering unparalleled accuracy of cut and ease of maintenance. More details can be found by visiting stand 614.
The INFINICUT® stand is always awash with solutions designed to meet the exacting requirements for modern golf course maintenance, and BTME 2025 is shaping up to be no different. In the year since it’s launch, the 22” FL golf cutting unit has proven itself to be the most balanced mower for achieving low heights of cut with greenkeepers around the world. The two new models promise to build on this success, combining the very best in cut quality with technological advancements which not only benefit plant health, but optimise the operator experience.
Appreciating that every golf course is different and that course managers don’t necessarily follow the same maintenance doctrine, all INFINICUT® models offer the ability to quickly and easily alter a range of mower parameters via the InfiniApp™. Settings can also
be stored for retrieval and/or simultaneously sent wirelessly to multiple machines in a fleet, reducing time and allbut eliminating differentiation between mowers.
One InfiniApp™ feature that has proven extremely popular with operators is ‘tilt and turn’. At the end of line turn, a sensor automatically detects that the mower is lifted and slows the unit down to a prechosen percentage of walk speed. Each individual operator can choose a slow-down rate that they are comfortable with and, when dropped back
to the mow position, the regular mowing speed is engaged.
Further convenience is delivered thanks to the dedicated INFINICUT® trailer, offering the swift and safe transportation of 22” and 26” units between greens.
The technical team will be on hand across the three days to discuss the full INFINICUT® pedestrian range, together with the TMSystem™ collection of maintenance cassettes which transform the INFINICUT® or mainstream models of multi-gang mower into units for complete turf refinement.
Kubota to showcase versatile greenkeeping solutions at BTME on stand 624
Kubota will be back BTME once again in January, joining Baroness on stand 624 to showcase the very best in Japanese excellence. Complementing an array of Baroness implements, pedestrian and ride on mowers will be models from across Kubota’s RTV, mower and compact tractor range including the B2-261 and robust and versatile L2-622HST – the agile all-rounder that effortlessly tackles all maintenance tasks around the golf course.

Meet the Perfect Volunteer: The Robot Revolutionising Pitch Marking
very groundskeeper knows the challenge: You’ve got a match to prepare for, and time is never on your side. Heavy rain, last-minute changes, and limited volunteers make marking pitches a race against the clock. But what if there were a perfect volunteer one that never tires, never complains, and always delivers precision? For Edgewater High School across the Atlantic, that volunteer came in the form of a TinyMobileRobot.
Their success story shows how this innovative solution transformed pitch maintenance from a logistical nightmare to a streamlined operation.
“It has really changed the game,” says Chris Jenkins, Edgewater’s groundskeeper. He can now set the robot and focus on other tasks while the robot marks goal lines, touchlines, hashes, and intricate patterns with ease.
Guided by GPS technology, the robot ensures perfectly straight lines in any condition even on rain-soaked pitches or when facing tight deadlines. Everything is ready by game time it’s reliable, no matter what.

ISEKI Covers the Course with Remote-Control Tool Carrier, Tractors and Mowers at BTME 2025
Iseki UK and Ireland will be exhibiting tractors, a remote-control tool carrier and mowers for every area of the golf course in Hall 6, Stand 645, at BTME 2025.
Recognised as one of the leading exhibitions for greenkeepers, BTME provides the perfect platform for Iseki to showcase its innovative range of machinery tailored to the needs of golf courses and turf management.
This year, Iseki will exhibit a lineup of equipment designed for precision, efficiency, and sustainability, including the Raymo remote-controlled Torpedo with Electric Power Pack and R42/R48 Deck. This ecofriendly mower provides quiet operation and zero-emission performance across all terrain and is especially effective on side slopes, around water hazards and other areas that traditional mowers can’t reach.
The powerful yet compact theme is continued with the TH5 ROPS tractor. This tractor is perfect for a variety of course maintenance needs, with its hydrostatic transmission and high lift capacity giving the operator complete control. Comfort, lift capacity and manoeuvrability combine to make a tractor that can access and operate in almost any area of the course on essentials tasks.
For jobs that need more power over more expansive areas, Iseki has the TG6507 IQ Tractor with Loader - a robust and powerful tractor equipped with the IQ transmission system. The IQ dual-clutch gearbox works on the principle of a directshift gearbox, which consists of two gearboxes working in unison, offering the control of a manual with the convenience of an automatic. There are eight main gears and three ranges. Gears are changed by simply moving the gear lever through the straight shift gate with no need to use the main clutch. If D is selected, then gears 4 – 8 are operated automatically – ideal for aeration, spraying, topdressing or cutting.
For cutting in more compact areas, Iseki offers the SXG327 with 54” High-Tip Collector. Known for its precision and high-performance collection capabilities of up to 650 litres, this mower is perfect for fine

Six Echo TM-2050’s transform the task of winter presentation at Hartsbourne Country Club
t’s not just the greenkeepers that are impressed with the fleet of six Echo TM-2050 robotic mowers installed by GroundTech at Hartsbourne Country Club, the members are too! Less than a month after their delivery, players and staff alike have recognised the transformation in presentation of some of the club’s perimeter areas which previously proved near-impossible to maintain in challenging winter conditions.
Like many heavy clay soil courses, this 27-hole club in South Hertfordshire can often lay wet during prolonged periods of rainfall, creating problems in getting machinery out to regularly cut the rough and fairways.
General Manager Terry MulfordLawlor explains that the knockon impact extends well beyond
the winter, “Both presentation and playability suffers and then, come the spring, the grass is so long and dense that it takes a lot of hard work to get them back to where we want them to be.”
“The proposition that the Echo robotic mowers could be cutting consistently whatever the weather was of great interest.”
Terry was assisted in his search by Marcus Glover and Sam Baker from GroundTech, along with Sam Daybell from Echo who paired the club with six TM-2050 robots with solar array and portable battery chargers. The largest of the Echo range the TM-2050 offers the pinnacle of productivity, capable of mowing areas of up to 75,000m while simultaneously providing precise mulching of material for an immaculate finish.
“It’s no exaggeration to say that these mowers have been a gamechanger for us. The intention was that they’d be used only for the rough. However, the GroundTech team mapped all of our fairways and with the results so outstanding we’d be mad not to use them everywhere.” Terry adds, “The work these Robots are doing has already freed up our skilled team of ten greenkeepers to then focus their efforts elsewhere, hand-cutting areas such as aprons which we’ve not previously had the resources to do and focussing on the technical and agronomic aspects of course management that will take our offering to the next level.”
“Members have been quick to comment that the rough has never looked better, but what’s more they just love watching the robots at work – we’ve even been asked if it’s possible to name and sponsor them!”
Terry concludes, “The process from start to finish has been smooth, personalised and professional. GroundTech supported us and went the extra mile to ensure we had the right set-up and infrastructure to get the most out of our machines. They didn’t over-emphasise what the mowers were capable of, but then they didn’t really need to! We already see this is the future for us.”
Terrain Aeration’s long-term treatment reaches one metre deep where compressed air blasts the compaction.
The soil is opened up for good drainage and a healthy sward with minimum disruption. We have been successfully deep aerating sports turf, bowling greens, golf courses, parks, racecourses, trees and gardens for over thirty years.

Phytophthora destroys Yew trees in Surrey
Arboriculturists and gardeners alike will be familiar with the devastating effects that Phytophthora causes. There are several hundred organisms of the Phytophthora species of
oomycetes, commonly known as water moulds, and after honey fungus, they are the most destructive cause of root rot and stem base decay in trees and shrubs. They don’t stop there.
Member species cause enormous
problems for crops, bedding plants, pot plants, herbaceous perennials, and all types of woody plants.
Above-ground symptoms include wilting and branch dieback, but these are often not apparent until the root decay is well and
truly advanced. It may also be there are other factors at work below ground. Examination of roots might show a poor root system, but Phytophthora are microscopic, so there will be no evidence the organisms are the cause. Laboratory examination may be needed to decide if it is Phytophthora root rot or waterlogging, with which it is usually associated. Either way, improving drainage reduces the chances and risk of the disease.
Such was the case at an extensive property in Farnham, Surrey. The owner had planted between 150 and 200 new Yew trees only to lose them to Phytophthora. It was decided to replace them, but the spores remain living in the soil. One solution is to destroy

affected plants and replace the root run with fresh topsoil. The problem is, the Phytophthora may remain at depth. The solution in the Farnham garden was provided by Terrain Aeration with a combination of their Terralift
deep aeration system and the owner’s treatment with a liquid product when rain was imminent. While the product does not kill the Phytophthora, it stops it from spreading. The Terralift uses a probe to reach a one-metre depth where it releases compressed air which fractures and fissures the soil in interlinked stages. The resulting aeration allows water and air to reach the roots and the water to drain, so no waterlogging. If the liquid product was watered over the top of the roots, there would be a lot of wasted run-off. Fracturing down at one-metre depth, creating fissures that allow the liquid to be washed in by the rain, and to reach through the root areas, is an effective combination.

These improvements allow turf professionals to focus on delivering exceptional results while simplifying maintenance and operation, making their work more efficient and hassle-free.
A Decade of Trusted Performance – Now Better Than Ever
For over ten years, the Snake has been trusted by leading golf courses and sports facilities worldwide.
Here’s what Damian Beattie, Head Groundskeeper, Helens Bay Golf Club had to say about his experience:
“We are into our 5th year with the Snake S2 now and it’s a fantastic bit of machinery. We went from a dedicated ride-on mower to the Snake and we haven’t looked back. It has brought down fuel costs, man hours and maintenance.
We are yet to find an area that the Snake can’t get into or won’t cut. We are able to use it in the winter months to cut fairways by lowering the height… it has just helped us out massively”.

trailed rotary mower, the Snake provides a finish independently validated by the Sports Turf Institute of New Zealand to rival that of cylinder mowers.
At the same time, it maintains the versatility and reliability of Trimax’s trailed rotary design.
The Snake S3 builds on this performance and retains its ability to handle tough or wet conditions efficiently. Its unique deck and blade design optimises airflow through the cutting chamber to cleanly cut and distribute grass, ensuring unmatched grass processing ability in a range of conditions.
Zero Daily Maintenance
The Snake S3 eliminates the need for daily greasing thanks to two key design changes:
operators to focus on what matters most—delivering exceptional turf quality.
Ease of Use Meets
Practical Design
The Snake S3 incorporates several new features designed to enhance ease of use, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum efficiency.
Removable blade beams:
Simplify blade changes and offer a more practical solution for potential repairs. If damage occurs to the blade system, only the blade beam needs replacing, rather than the entire spindle, helping to minimise downtime and reduce repair costs.
Stand-on covers: Provide safe and convenient access to key areas of the mower.
Height adjustment collars: Enable fast and precise changes to cutting height.
Trimax Titan Roller Bearing System: Advanced multi-layered seals and a sophisticated ingress channel effectively prevent debris from entering the bearing ensuring smooth operation without regular lubrication. Initially incorporated into the Trimax Pegasus and ProCut mowers first, the Titan system comes with a proven track record of durability and is fully covered under Trimax’s industryleading three-year warranty.
Maintenance-free wheel hubs: Sealed automotive bearings, engineered for durability, further reduce the need for daily maintenance.
Together, these innovations drastically cut down on maintenance time, allowing
“The Snake S3 was developed in direct response to customer feedback,” said Michael Sievwright, CEO at Trimax Mowing Systems. “Their input has helped us create a mower that addresses the real-world challenges faced by our customers, reinforcing our focus on delivering practical, effective solutions.”
Core Features Operators Trust
The Snake S3 retains the features that have made it a favourite in the industry, including advanced articulation for superior contour following and zero-turn manoeuvrability for tight, complex spaces.

Introducing the Snake S3: The Turf Specialist’s Secret Weapon
Trimax Mowing Systems is proud to introduce the Snake S3, the latest version of its globally trusted golf and sports turf mower. The Snake S3 builds on the legacy of the Snake series with a range of features designed to deliver zero daily maintenance and enhance ease of use.

Pitching for Perfection: OAS Products and Formartine
FC’s Journey to Gold
In the rugged terrain of Aberdeenshire, where the winds howl and the rains pour relentlessly, lies Formartine United Football Club, a beacon of grassroots football passion in the Scottish Highlands. Despite a modest budget and a mere two months of sun (if they’re lucky!), Formartine FC has defied the odds with their pitch, recently bestowed with the prestigious Gold status by the Scottish Football Association (SFA).
Behind this remarkable achievement is not just hard work and dedication but a revolutionary approach to pitch
management, rooted in organic principles and powered by Symbio products, a subsidiary of Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS).
Leading the charge is the Head Groundsman of Formartine
United FC Paul Fiske. With 35 years of greenkeeping and grounds management experience, including a 22-year tenure as the former head groundskeeper at Aberdeen FC, Paul’s passion knows no bounds. For the past six years, he has tended to Formartine’s pitch, with unwavering support from committee members and volunteers who share his dedication to excellence.
Formartine United Football Club is a semi-professional Scottish senior association football club currently playing in the Highland Football League but with ambitious plans to make higher leagues through the pyramid system.
Despite operating on a modest budget, the football club based in Pitmedden prioritises the maintenance of its grounds above all else, thanks to a chairman who understands the importance of investing in quality infrastructure and spends more on the pitch than other teams in its league.
Paul’s partnership with OAS dates back 15 years to when he began working with Symbio’s technical representatives. He has a bespoke programme tailored to Formartine’s unique challenges which incorporates a range of biological products including Mycorrhizae Inoculant, Mycrogro fertiliser, Compost Teas and Liquid Aeration, and biostimulants like CMS Shoot and Seaweed.
“Our programme works,” says Paul Fiske. “It is well regarded that our pitch is the best in our league. It is a soil-based pitch with minimal disease. We tweak things as necessary. The changing weather means it is not an exact science. The Symbio Mycorrhizae Inoculant is truly an unbelievable product - It really accelerates grass establishment and speeds up the pitch renovation process. It’s not a cheap option, but the results speak for themselves. With the short window for pitch renovations, every day counts, and the Mycorrhizae Inoculant ensures that we get the job done efficiently.”
Complementing the Mycorrhizae Inoculant is Mycrogro fertiliser, which provides essential nutrients for robust plant growth, and Compost Tea, which promotes soil health and biodiversity.
Liquid Aeration, a noninvasive alternative to mechanical aeration, helps alleviate soil compaction by stimulating microbial activity and improving water infiltration, ensuring optimal playing conditions throughout the season.
Navigating the unpredictable Scottish weather, where rainfall has reached unprecedented levels, Paul relies on OAS’s innovative solutions to keep the pitch in play.

resilient despite adverse weather conditions. “I have needed to use more Liquid Aeration than usual, but it’s important to use it at the right time; watch the forecast closely and apply products ahead of the weather. HydraAid and Liquid Aeration are fantastic for pulling the water off the surface and speeding up percolation.”
Looking ahead, Formartine United F.C. harbours ambitions of climbing the ranks. Paul reflects on their journey and says “The results speak for themselves. Despite the challenging climate and heavy usage, Formartine’s pitch boasted
an impressive 90% grass coverage when the 2023/24 season drew to a close. It’s clear to see that the pitch is actually performing better than some topflight Scottish clubs, even ones in the same region with bigger and better resources and less usage” concludes Paul, “given the usage Formartine gets, it’s a credit to the unwavering support of the chairman, the organic products from OAS, hard work and good working practices carried out with professionalism.”
Formartine United FC is a shining example of what can be achieved with passion, innovation, and a little help from nature. As they continue to defy expectations and chase their footballing dreams, one thing is certain – their pitch will always be a source of pride and envy for many clubs in their league and higher across Scotland.

Ecobunker take on icelandic challenge at Keilir Golf Club
eilir Golf Club in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland has just completed the second phase of its bunker replacement project with industry leading synthetic faced bunker specialists, EcoBunker.
KFaced with year round weather challenges and very harsh winters, the team at Keilir have been spending a disproportionate amount of their budget on maintaining the quality of their naturally revetted bunkers. Having received very positive feedback on EcoBunker’s work at
Royal St. Georges, among other projects, Keilir invited the team to address the unique challenges of an Icelandic golf course.
“Maintaining the quality of traditionally revetted bunkers is such a time-consuming job,” commented Guðbjartur Ísak
Ásgeirsson, Head Greenkeeper at Keilir Golf Club. “We face harsh conditions here in Iceland, and the work to keep the bunkers in good condition is difficult enough.
When you add in the need for a re-build every 5 years, they eat up the maintenance budget in a way that just isn’t sustainable.”
“Keilir is such an incredible setting. The front 9 weaves a path through lava flow and the back 9 follows a small peninsular with views of a local glacier,” adds EcoBunker founder Richard Allen.
“The major appeal of Keilir is the rugged landscape so I’m delighted with how our EcoBunkers have provided solutions to the maintenance challenges the team faced, while blending perfectly with the natural terrain. This has been a fantastic project for us and look forward to the next phases.”
Phase one of the project took place this Spring with the creation of two new bunkers. Following very positive feedback from the members and maintenance team at Keilir, a further four bunkers have been installed this Autumn, with more planned for Spring 2025.
“It has actually been quicker to construct an EcoBunker that will last over 20 years than to naturally revett our bunkers. We’re delighted with the results and look forward to putting the new bunkers into play when we next open the course. certainly look forward to a maintenance free season for our six new EcoBunkers!” concluded Guðbjartur.

He was on site for only two weeks, but made a big impression on course developer Will Andersen. “I had Trevor for two weeks, and have been a fan ever since,” says Andersen. “Even in that short time it was obvious what a talent he was, both as shaper and as a human being. He was the real visionary behind Landmand’s fourth hole he created a great green that really made the hole.” He also worked with the firm on the rebuild of the Overton Park municipal in Memphis.
Dormer has just begun the reconstruction of the nine-hole Old Dane course a few miles from Landmand, for the Andersen family, his first solo design project. He will finish this project under his own name. “Trevor had agreed the Old Dane job with Will Andersen before we agreed to partner up, so it remains entirely his gig,” says Collins. “But given the relationship we have with the Andersen family, it is wonderful to think that our people will be responsible for both their courses.”
King-Collins adds third partner: Canadian architect Trevor Dormer joins dynamic golf design firm
Dormer first worked with KingCollins on the construction of the Landmand course in Nebraska.
“King-Collins is very excited to be expanding to include Trevor,” says Rob Collins. “The first time met him was on the eighth hole at Wildstone in spring 2007 when was working for Gary Player.
We became immediate and fast friends on that project and have stayed in touch ever since. He is incredibly talented on both the design and construction side –think he’s as good as anyone out there. He has a great mind for design and is highly skilled at operating equipment. He is young – he will add longevity to our operation – and he has the perfect skillset for our company, as we are a design-build firm.”
“Rob and have been really good friends for a long, long time, so when he asked me if I would like to come on as a partner, couldn’t say no,” says Dormer. “It’s tough to leave Bill and Ben, but Rob and Tad are crazily busy, and have such a great time with them, so it made total sense. First and foremost it’s fun being out there with those guys. Rob pushes the limits. He’s not scared to take risks, and there’s no-one breathing down your neck when you’re trying to be creative.”
Dormer explains that his relationship with Tad King is equally strong. “Tad is a very special person,” he says. “I’ve chatted with him at length about how he manages his construction
projects. When I’m putting together cost estimates, he’s the guy talk to. If Tad didn’t fit with me, or with him, I’d have said ‘Rob, I can’t do it’. I think what can bring to King-Collins Dormer is a different sort of experience. Rob has done a lot, Tad has been all over the world. have been working with Bill and Ben for over ten years, and I have learned a lot from them. am excited to take the experience I have gained from working with people of their calibre for so long
and put it together with Rob and Tad’s skillsets – I hope and believe we will do some outstanding work together. think that one of my talents is that have a way of managing construction crews and work teams, of putting them at ease – the shaper that‘s roughing in a fairway or the guy that’s digging bunkers all have talents, and it’s about being able to find the best niche for them.”
