Kloof Road House

Located at the foot of a nature reserve in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, Kloof Road House is the latest project by Nico van der Meulen Architects. 4

M Square Lifestyle Design is an interior design practice that creates bold and contemporary design solutions while M Square Lifestyle Necessities is an upmarket furniture and dĂŠcor showroom with a selection of the finest imported furniture from design studios around the world. Both companies were established in association with Nico van der Meulen Architects. Photographs by: David Ross and Barend Roberts Website: www.nicovdmeulen.com 5

The client's brief called for a family orientated home suitable for indoor/ outdoor entertainment that maximizes the views to the north. The result is a 1100m² sculptural piece of architecture that is an extreme transformation from the previously modest single story. With every room in the house opening outdoors, linking the home with the landscaped garden, indoor/outdoor living is guaranteed. Werner van der Meulen used morphed steels forms that wrap around and frame the structure by the use of parasitic architecture. From

the street, the boldly designed offshutter boundary wall with black steel shapes creeping over predicts that this is no ordinary piece of architecture. The black steel sliding garage doors of the four new garages that were added on top of the existing house, combine with the sculptural steel forms of the guard house and porte cochere. Diagonal strip lights featured within the wall of the entrance create an abstract pattern at night that guides visitors to the entrance gate.

6

Steel, glass and concrete are prominently used in Kloof Road House and have been integrated into the design, from the boundary wall all the way to the interior. The angled steel roof of the entrance hall overhangs the double volume window and glass front door at the entrance, while the sculptural steel staircase is visible behind the window. The wall of the entrance is clad with natural timber in a herringbone pattern to soften the harshness of the steel, glass and concrete interior, while the backlit

ceilings create a shadowless interior inside the sculptured 3D forms.

lights that complement this are sourced from M Square Lifestyle Necessities.

M Square Lifestyle Design translated the architectural concept of Kloof Road House into the interior design. Steel perforated panels and off-shutter concrete were amongst the elements used for the interior, while the design of the lighting compliments the bold forms of the home and defines the angles. Concrete, glass and steel visually link the interior and exterior, smoothly integrating architecture and interior design. The furniture, decor and feature

Nico van der Meulen Architect’s trademark of seamlessly connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces is achieved through the use of frameless folding glass doors, transforming the lanai into an extension of the living room. The double volume living room and dining room, kitchen and lanai are situated in an open plan area and coherently merge into one another with a polished concrete floor extending 7

to the lanai. The angled columns supporting steel beams and the roof pierce the double volume space. These structural elements were designed to appear sculptural, while the sculptures on display compliment the structural components of the building.

Energy efficiency was very important, so a decision was made to use a waterbased under floor heating system, connected to solar panels and a heat pump, both for heating and cooling. This was installed in a polished concrete floor for good conductivity. Kloof Road House has four en suite bedrooms; two children’s bedrooms and a guest bedroom situated downstairs and the main bedroom suite located upstairs. The design of the main bedroom incorporates a large open balcony with views stretching to

the far horizon, while the open plan bathroom flows around the corner to the expansive dressing room. The main suite has its own lounge area with a television and fireplace, as well as a mini kitchenette cum bar. A pajama-lounge and playroom is located upstairs and overlooks the double volume living spaces and kitchen, leading onto a large northfacing balcony that forms the roof of the lanai, offering views of the garden and other distant views.

8

A 12 x 8m floating pavilion is located on the lower level of the sloping garden and affords views of the northern façade in its entirety, as well as the cantilevered koi pond and north views towards Sandton. The pavilion allows for effortless entertaining at the swimming pool with an open fire pit next to it, as well as a barbeque and bar located within. www.nicovdmeulen.com

LABSS Approval Granted For Celsius Roof

New generation thermal breaks – Schöck Stand E3060

Global UPVC Delivers The Perfect Remedy at Historic Hospital Site

The recently-introduced Celsius Solid Roof system from Synseal is now fully approved and registered by the LABSS (Local Authority Building Standards Scotland) as checked for compliance with Scottish Building Regulations under certificate number EWS550. Construction of a completely new solid roof or replacement of an existing conservatory roof with a retrofit solid roof involves a statutory obligation to submit a Building Regulations application. The scope of Synseal’s updated certificate number EWS550 now covers England, Wales and Scotland to facilitate mandatory legal technical compliance procedures for site locations in all three countries. The market opportunity for retro-fitting existing tired old conservatories is significant and our fast-fitting Celsius Solid Roof has a traditional all-timber core construction to provide a truly warm yet relatively lightweight structure that will not unduly stress existing conservatory window walling structures and foundations. OMSORG / GRAUX & BAEYENS Architects An archetypal “Flemish wide-house in the center of Ename, Belgium, next to the archaeological site of the St Salvator's Abbey, is the setting for this refurbishment. The property hosts a psychotherapy center and a dwelling. Both claim a relationship with the garden. This stalemate is lifted by introducing a

concrete canopy in the garden attached to the main volume. This self-supporting element acts as extension for the cabinets, as private terrace, access to garden and as a carport. The patio is bounded by the old wall and creates privacy towards the garden. The terrace created by this canopy offers a view over the archaeological site.

Named Omsorg, the project involved a complete renovation of the run-down three-storey house in Destelbergen, while the new concrete platform was installed in the garden to create both a shelter over the existing patio and a new first-floor terrace. www.graux-baeyens.be

John Ray Infant School Rises From The Ashes PUPILS and staff at an Essex school started the term at a brand new multimillion pound facility, after their school was devastated by fire two years ago in a rebuild programme overseen by leading independent management, design and construction consultancy Pick Everard The buildings at John Ray Infant School in Braintree, Essex were swept through by a fire in August 2013, just days before the school was expected to open for the autumn term, creating an urgent need for temporary accommodation. Pick Everard was appointed to ensure temporary accommodation was secured quickly so as to minimise disruption. The firm conducted an initial dilapidations survey and provided cost management services for the enabling works to use the vacant Takeley Primary School where the school's 285 pupils were initially housed - nearly 15 miles away. Essex County Council approved funding for a comprehensive rebuild and expansion of the school to create much-needed additional school places in the area, increasing classes from three

to four per year to take pupil numbers to around 360. Pick Everard provided project management, cost management and CDM services. Gary Buick, at Pick Everard, said: "This has been a very difficult time for the pupils and staff at John Ray Infant School and we are very pleased to be handing over their brand new school ready for the new term this September. "Initially it was essential that appropriate temporary accommodation was secured to help minimise disruption. We worked very closely with the school and the council to get pupils into the vacant building at the former Takeley Primary School as a temporary solution. "As a firm we have a great deal of experience within the education sector, particularly in and around Greater London, but this project provided us with the unique challenge of delivering suitable accommodation on the playing fields of the of the next door John Ray Juniors School and Notley High School, ensuring that they did not have to travel nearly 15 miles to school each day.

"Time was very much of the essence so we worked closely with the school and the council, as well as all the other parties involved in delivering the project, to ensure the classroom accommodation was delivered as soon as practicable something which was achieved in just six weeks." A new look John Ray Infant School will open to staff and pupils in September. As well as creating new places at the infant school, the new school also includes an expansion to the junior school and space for 120 additional pupils. Paul Darlow added: "We are delighted to be able to hand over the brand new school to the council, which will not only provide excellent new facilities for its staff and pupils for any years to come but has also created space for a number of new school places for the area - something which is challenging local authorities across the UK." www.johnrayinfants.com

Purchasers are demanding products that do not compromise on style, but offer exceptional value for money. 3. Monochrome to marble

The most popular worktop colours are still the traditional shades of White, Black and Grey. However there is an increase demand for subtle marble finishes and beige tones. 4. Definitely durable?

Whether it is a consumer looking to renovate or an architect or specifier, working on a large-scale project durability is a key consideration. 5. Growing confidence

As 2015 has progressed we have received rave reviews from a host of installers who have been amazed at the speed and ease of working with modular work surfaces such as Max-Top Quarz. For more information visit www.maxtopquartz.co.uk

Noe Residence - A Detail-Oriented, Introspective, Modern Home A research scientist with an eye for detail approached Studio VARA with a modest vision and a couple of basic practical needs: First, transform a 1908 Noe Valley cottage– with a history of subpar alterations – into a cohesive modern dwelling. Second, provide an enclosed garage in a neighborhood with tough parking. The result is a quiet house of 3500 sq. ft. with two distinct faces; one that provides privacy from

urban street traffic, and another that opens up to expansive Bay views.Traces of the original cottage are preserved in the massing and circulation of the final building. The grand stair marks the separation between public spaces to the south and private spaces to the north. The new garage is incorporated into the “public” massing, with guest suites

both above and below. To the north, the open living area at the heart of the home expands past the folding window wall to the east-facing deck beyond, where one can bask in the panoramic views of the City and East Bay, or contemplate the juxtaposition of urban and natural in the garden below. Above this main space is the master suite, which takes advantage of even grander views through both framed openings and a lofty private deck.

From inside to outside, the architectural/ engineering team provided full-services every step of the way, from initial concepts to final completion in 2013: City planning, building permits, and all phases of design and construction oversight, including architecture, interiors, furnishings, landscape, and lighting. The team consistently worked toward creating a calm and peaceful retreat, with a balance of restraint and supple details sure to be appreciated by a client

with a discerning eye. The project’s success lies in the judicious use of these carefully executed “moments” –natural wood screening at the master bedroom window which reinterprets an existing invasive tree; a wall of custom cabinetry that unifies the kitchen and living room, clad in veneer hand-picked by the client; the dance of metal and glass on the main stair guardrail; the subtle palette of “warm” mixed with “cool” that recurs in both tone and materials: wood juxtaposed with glass, metal against stone.

P C Henderson offers solutions to help meet the desire for adaptable living

As it becomes more difficult and expensive to buy a house, many homeowners are opting to improve their current property rather than move. Mary Duggan, a judge for the RIBA House of the Year award has noticed an increase in the trend for a broken-plan layout, leading to a demand for snugs and private spaces, partly due to the changes in the modern family, interests, lifestyle and technology. Adaptable living is not a new concept to P C Henderson. Fergus Pickard, Research & Development Director at P C Henderson comments: “We have worked to offer a range for sliding and folding door hardware that effortlessly divide a multitude of spaces both in the home and in the workplace. By using our residential range of sliding and folding systems, homeowners can combine both open and broken-plan living by neatly storing the room dividers when the spaces are opened for entertaining or socialising. Heating, Ventilation & Insulation

Energy Efficient Cooling for Students at the University of Essex

Underfloor systems utilise the plenum beneath a raised floor as the ventilation zone removing the need for most, if not all, ceiling based ducting or pipework. Commonly found in office environments, there has recently been an increase in use in academic facilities, particularly University and Sixth Form learning and study centres. With AET Flexible Space systems, fully conditioned air is fed into the plenum by zonal downflow units (CAM), which is then introduced into the space via floor recessed fan terminal units or Fantiles, which are easily relocated with the 600 x 600 mm raised floor tiles and also feature integrated controllers allowing users to personally adjust temperature and fan speed settings. The CAM-V units introduce conditioned air at floor level into the plenum beneath the raised floor and then receive return air at high level for reconditioning. Rinnai Welcomes Advent of ‘Transparent’ Energy Labelling

Rinnai, designer and manufacturer of the Infinity range of continuous flow gas fired water heaters, welcomes the implementation of the ERP and Energy Labelling Directive as its expansive range of water heaters can satisfy a complete range of load profiles and all units are A RATED. On 26 September 2015 The Energy Related Products (ERP) Directive, incorporating Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Directives for water heaters (Lot 2) comes into force, meaning that water-heating products sold in the UK will need to meet minimum energy performance criteria in order to be legally placed on the market, and will require an energy label. Tony Gittings, Managing Director of Rinnai UK says “Rinnai now brings to market the most expansive range of A-rated appliances, that have load profiles suitable for both domestic and commercial projects. Our appliances range from load profile(s) for small domestic models to XXL sized commercial units.

NEW Budget Differential Thermometer Kit

Airflow and HVAC Maintenance

JS Air Curtains New Product Catalogue

Electronic Temperature Instruments Ltd has introduced a new budget Differential thermometer kit, to meet the needs of plumbers and HVAC engineers. The ETI Differential thermometer measures temperature over the range of -99.9 to 299.9 °C with a 0.1 °C resolution or 300 to 1372 °C with a 1 °C resolution. The thermometer features a custom, LCD display with °C/°F, T1, T2, diff, hold, open circuit, low battery indication and a user selectable backlight. The unit incorporates an auto-power off facility that automatically turns the instrument off after approximately ten minutes, maximising battery life. The unit is housed in a durable, ABS case that has an integrated rubber seal to ensure complete water resistance and help reduce the possibility of damage in the field. Each Differential thermometer is supplied as a kit, with two pipe clamp probes in a protective zip wallet.

Airflow is the single most critical element in the correct operation of ALL air heating and cooling systems. Yet most systems do not have the correct airflow. Highly qualified engineers are wasting hours on the environmentally unfriendly, chemical cleaning of coil fins instead of fine tuning and balancing the sensitive air handling systems they are trained to maintain. In most regions of the UK, pollen is a major contributor to the fouling of cooling equipment. This, combined with general debris caused by foliage, refuse and other airborne particulates, can have a significant impact upon the dayto-day running of the equipment. It has always been difficult to add filtration to cooling equipment (air and water cooled), small condensers and cooling towers. Until now. RABScreen external filters now provide a solution to air intake debris, contaminated coils and clogged cooling tower sumps.

JS Air Curtains, the UK’s leading air curtain specialist, is pleased to announce the launch of its new product catalogue. Packed with detailed information on its wide range of exposed, recessed, industrial and revolving door units, the catalogue incorporates quick glance product options and performance data tables for each model. Tim Scott, Head of Sales at JS Air Curtains comments, “This catalogue has many new products, an easy to view selection guide, information on heat pump technology and more control options. These details and its comprehensive range for all air curtain applications, makes this catalogue the “go-to” resource for air curtain selection and expert advice”.

Each kit is competitively priced at £87.50 exclusive of VAT and available direct from www.etiltd.com ordering code 860-095.

Hitachi Air Conditioning Europe releases new heat pump product line-up Completely redesigned to meet the needs of specifiers, installers and homeowners, Hitachi’s expanded Yutaki air source heat pump product range is one of the widest on the market. Utilising common components, common outdoor units and simplified design to benefit both end users and installers, the extended line-up includes a total of 70 new models which are more compact for small installation spaces and are lighter weight for easier handling. The introduction of common components and controllers streamlines product training requirements, reduces the need for carrying multiple spares, and lowers installation and maintenance time. Performances have also been improved, with higher COPs, better seasonal efficiencies and higher capacities. Yutaki-S has a new 6kW outdoor unit as well as three indoor units (4.5kW, 6kW and 7.5kW) to suit the heating and domestic hot water requirements of small to large properties and is ideal for both new build and renovation projects. All-in-one Yutaki-SCombi also includes a new 6kW model, plus an innovative solar version with integrated 260L

domestic hot water (DHW) tank, with solar coils designed specifically to be ‘ready to use’ with solar panels. High temperature Yutaki-S80, which generates domestic hot water at up to 80oC, has been completely redesigned and now includes two specific indoor units to be used either standalone (with top pipe connections) or with an optional 200L or 260L domestic hot water (DHW) tank, with rigid pipe connections to the rear of the unit. Monobloc Yutaki-M, which requires no indoor space, now shares many of the same components and controllers as the splits in the range for simplicity of installation and maintenance. All Yutaki models can be supplied with a new Cooling Kit accessory to enable both heating and cooling modes. A new multi-function wired remote control is common to all Yutaki models – meaning a single menu for all Yutaki products with a dedicated installer view, wizard start up configuration and a more intuitive menu for quick and simple commissioning. The alarm history is also logged to assist engineers with troubleshooting.

42

Talking about the benefits for end users, Andy Hooper, UK Heating Manager, Johnson Controls – Hitachi Air Conditioning Solutions said, “Yutaki has some of the best seasonal performance (SCOP) figures on the market, many models are A+++ efficient and the new wired and wireless thermostats are simple to use with weekly timers, holiday modes and a favourite button, so it’s a great product range for homeowners looking to reduce their energy bills as well as their impact on climate change.” The new Yutaki product range is launching at Ecobuild and will be available for delivery from April. All Hitachi’s Yutaki air source heat pumps are MCS approved, eligible for the domestic and non-domestic RHI and have domestic hot water (DHW) Legionella Protection and a five-year warranty as standard. H67 / StudioPractice Habitat 67, an iconic architectural landmark not only in North America but also across the world, marked a beginning. The beginning of an organic, dynamic and democratic residential space, where every citizen has its own unique light and space. This beautifully designed and executed masterpiece catapulted the carriers of Moche Sadie and his team, and inspires architecture ever since. This influence can be found in Ricardo Boffil’s kafka castle (1968), Kisho Kurokawa’s Nkagin Capsule Tower (1972) and even recently in BIG’s mountain Dwelling (2008).

Our project consisted of refurbishing a Habitat 67 unit that was remodeled many times in the past, adding layers of opacity to the original design. As a result, our primary challenge was to renew with its past design philosophy. Functional but minimal design of open space was hence chosen as a medium to obtain this concept. This was obtained by removing all interior walls to optimize light management and by adding transparency and reflection of glass to the exposed original cement walls. A modern touch of moving cubes were 44

introduced in the interior design of the apartment, recalling the fact that these hanging boxes attain equilibrium, in the background of moving water. A conversation between inside and out was consequently restored, in this modern times version of hanging gardens. Integrating the qualities of a suburban home into an urban high-rise, through a medium of prefabricated forms was a revolutionary concept that rethought the apartment-building design in 1967; and we revived this concept, in a weightless and panoramic environment of hanging concrete, in 2015.

Spotlight On Industry Growth And Market Priorities At Ecobuild 2016 Ecobuild returns in March with an increased and in-depth focus on the latest industry trends, challenges and opportunities – and how professionals from across the whole supply chain can capitalise on them. The UK’s largest show dedicated to construction and energy will provide visitors with access to invaluable industry insights and projections relating to all aspects of the construction sector through a mix of a high-level conference, CPD-accredited learning hubs and more than 800 exhibitors showcasing a wide range of new products, materials, solutions and services. Attracting more than 40,000 industry professionals from across the whole supply chain each year, Ecobuild is the leading exhibition and conference for the UK construction and energy market. It attracts a broad range of visitors from architects to manufacturers, suppliers to installers.

In 2015, 96% of the top 25 architectural practices featured on the AJ 120 List and 84% of the leading housebuilders and contractors attended the show. The 2016 event will see an evolved proposition for the event to focus on areas of industry growth and market priorities such as housing, infrastructure, next generation innovation, technology and people. Dedicated days to Homes, Architecture and Next Generation Ecobuild 2016’s high-level conference is split into three daily streams. The first day’s stream of Homes explores the most pressing, divisive and important decisions that the industry must take to deliver comfortable, sustainable, resilient places and homes. What do new-build and retrofitted homes and communities 46

need to deliver, and at what cost? Chaired by broadcaster Cathy Newman, speakers include Tony Pidgley, Chairman of Berkeley Group; David Sheridan, Chief Executive of Keepmoat, and Rowan Moore, Architecture Critic for the Observer. All three will provide a unique and inspiring look at what makes good housing. Our range of wardrobes can be supplied fitted or free-standing by our team of approved fitters, who are craftsmen in their own right. Every fitter has experience of working in period properties and unusually designed modern homes, so you can be assured of a quality finish.

Each design is brought to life with striking features, including period skirting, ornate cornice and vaulted columns. These create eye-catching designs that complement their interior surroundings.

All of our interiors are designed with a choice of finish, from aromatic Lebanon Cedar to warm tones of Oak and Walnut wood and Melamine veneers. Elegant storage solutions ensure your garments and shoes are presented in functional 52

order, from easy-to-use pull down and fixed hanging rails, and soft-glide pull out trays, to practical shelving and stylish glass fronted drawers. Colour Me Happy - Bright and Bold Roman Blinds and Curtains for 2016

Style Studio’s new range of curtains and roman blinds are a celebration of pattern and offer a kaleidoscope of colours, which have been hand picked to deliver the on-trend looks for 2016 and beyond. From citrus shades to blue hues, the rainbow array of vibrant fabrics will provide a burst of brightness in homes throughout the coming seasons. Citrus Brights Citrus shades are a key trend for 2016; zesty tangerine, lime and blood orange accent fabrics will freshen up rooms and quench colour cravings. Style tip: “Don’t be afraid to mix and match different colours and patterns in citrus shades to brighten a neutral living space, as long as they are the same tones you can’t go far wrong.” Lorna McAleer, Style Studio. It’s Timeless … it's the 'Real Teal' Teal offers a great deal for the home – it’s timeless and according to colour experts 'those who choose blue are often considered confident and dependable'. Style Studio’s bright and beautiful teal-based colour ways and patterns are guaranteed to leave homeowners far from feeling blue. Try teal, turquoise and lively cobalt blues with crosshatch and nirvana patterns, or

choose Sherwood, which has a gorgeous shiny stitched vine detail.

an eye-catching look to draw the eye to wonderful windows.

Style tip: "Mixing blue stripes, plains and patterns can help to bring a grey background to life." Lorna McAleer, Style Studio.

Flaming Florals For a more feminine take on colour, choose florals but opt for red hot shades to deliver impact and interest.

Or opt for darker, rich royal blues for a more subtle and sophisticated look. The blue and white trend of 2015 is set to continue long into 2016, so it’s a great colour scheme to invest in.

Contemporary Greys Grey is by far one of the most versatile colours, which is why it’s a mainstay in many UK homes and a look that designers love to continue to experiment with year on year.

Don’t be a Plain Jane – Contrast designs and patterns Combining roman blinds and curtains in the same window, in different patterned fabrics of the same tone, is a big look for UK homes; and it’s a sure fire way to make a window the focal point of a room. Try Style Studio’s show-stopping patterns in bold blackcurrant and luscious berry shades and follow the look through by adding scatter cushions in more patterns and plain fabrics of the same colour group. Tried & Tested Texture Texture is often an interior designer’s favourite tool to inject depth and interest into a room’s décor. Add texture at windows with crushed velvet or tartan – the light effects on these rich, sumptuous fabrics deliver 58

Style tip: “Grey can be used as both a calming backdrop for a room or applied to make a dramatic statement when darker shades are used. Keeping your palette in tones of grey means you can afford to be more experimental with pattern and texture.” Lorna McAleer, Style Studio. Prices start at £166 for a 600mm x 600mm made-to-measure Roman blind from Style Studio, while Curtains start at £235 for a pair of 1600mm x 1000mm made-to-measure curtains. Surface Design Show and Interiors & Interior Designs HERADESIGN CONTINUES TO INNOVATE AND EXCITE AT SURFACE DESIGN SHOW

KALLISTO TAKES SERVICE TO ANOTHER LEVEL

At last year’s Surface Design Show, Heradesign from Knauf AMF Ceilings made an impact on architects and designers for the visual energy and contemporary warmth it adds to their interiors.

As spiral staircases go through a renaissance and architects and developers alike identify the benefits in new builds, Kallisto, the pre-cast concrete spiral and helical staircase division of Milbank Concrete Products, offers customers an exclusive full service, tailored to suit the individual needs of domestic and commercial developments. Based at its dedicated production facility in Essex, Kallisto prides itself on working closely with architects, engineers and designers to achieve stunning, durable pre-cast spiral and helical staircase solutions and has been commissioned for installations in some of the most prestigious properties in the UK. By working closely with the client to reach a unique solution, for what is sometimes a tricky element in building design, each individual pre-cast concrete staircase by Kallisto is individually designed, manufactured and installed to meet the specific requirements of that project, whilst remaining highly – often surprisingly - affordable.

Visit Stand 100 at The Surface Design Show, 9 - 11 February 2016 at the London Business Centre. to find out why.

Endless design possibilities Heradesign is a range of sustainable, wood-wool based ceiling tiles and wall panels, which are cost effective and easy to install. The visible wood fibres give Heradesign its naturally textured finish. The panels are robust to ensure longevity. Michael Laird Architects (MLA) and Reiach and Hall Architects designed and delivered a new campus at Glasgow City College. Heradesign’s appearance made it an ideal fit for the large engineering hall. “The Engineering hall is an industrial space where raw and robust materials have been left exposed. We felt that the material quality of Heradesign aligned with the intended design aesthetic.” Design possibilities are endless, Heradesign is available in a wide range of sizes, edge details and unlimited colours. To create memorable interiors, Heradesign can be fitted as a suspended ceiling, hung as rafts or fits, or directly onto walls and ceilings.

Reggiani Lights Up The Barclaycard Arena Reggiani Lighting UK has supplied the interior and exterior luminaires for the £26 million redevelopment of the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham formerly known as the National Indoor Arena, or NIA. Lighting designers LAPD worked closely with the design team at Reggiani to come up with a scheme to provide illumination throughout the sporting and entertainment venue. All areas of the Barclaycard Arena have been touched by the redevelopment – from front of house through to backstage. The most dramatic element is a new glassfronted façade and front of house showcase which creates a dynamic arrival point for visitors, whilst iconic 20m high ‘Sky Needles’ on top of the building add to the skyline of Birmingham and light up at night. The redevelopment also includes enhanced hospitality/food and beverage offers and seven-days-a-week retail outlets which add value to the visitor experience.

The flow within the Arena has been made much easier, increasing the ease of access and level of comfort. For the internal lighting Reggiani supplied Unisio surface mounted downlighters in white with 26W LEDs for entrance and concourse areas. Perfect for use in large spaces with ceiling heights of more than six metres, Reggiani’s Unisio is a highly versatile, recessed luminaire with exceptional visual comfort that is also well-suited to fixed accent lighting. Special LowLED downlights were also used on concourse levels, with medium beam LowLED downlighters and MiLED downlighters with a wide beam also installed in toilet cubicles and the arena. Sombra 26W LED 3000K asymmetric wallwashers have been employed under the mezzanine on the concourse floor. 64

Two spherical rotating sections enable the light to rotate by 45 degrees and 356 degrees respectively on the axes, keeping the light source hidden from view at practically any angle. Perhaps most striking of all is the exterior lighting scheme using Reggiani’s Envios fittings. This builds on the success achieved by its predecessor, the LAPD-designed Woolwich Squares scheme, also based on Reggiani’s Envios fittings. In this case, the lighting is provided by pole-mounted Envios

in configurations of two, four and six per 5m column in a deliberately chosen mix of 32W and 39W LEDs with colour temperatures of 3000 and 4000K, all tailored to the height and location of the areas to be illuminated. The Envios family of interior and exterior luminaires features a comprehensive array of mounting options and accessories which enable the end user to place them virtually anywhere. www.reggiani.net

Formed in 2013, Viridian Landscape Studio might appear to be a new kid on the block in the world of landscape design, until that is, the experience and credentials of its two Directors is taken into account. The diverse careers of Andrew Halksworth and Anne Jennings provides Viridian with a wealth of experience, knowledge and professional networks, rivalling that of long-established competitors and enabling the Studio to take on complex, diverse and exciting projects. Andrew studied at UCL’s Architecture School, specialising in Landscape Architecture and Town Planning, followed by a Master’s in Landscape Ecology. He then worked in design, development and construction throughout the UK, Hong Kong, the Middle East and West Germany. He advises and acts as consultant on a wide range of complex landscape projects, including the green screen planting installations at Kia Oval, home

of Surrey County Cricket Club. As the owner of Tendercare Nurseries Andrew developed unrivalled expertise in the procurement, supply and installation of mature trees. Anne’s long experience as a garden and landscape designer has provided her with a broad and diverse portfolio that ranges from London Squares to schools, mixed use commercial sites and top end domestic gardens, including those surrounding a £30m Hampstead newbuild. Anne is also a knowledgeable garden historian, working as advisor and consultant for projects set within sensitive and heritage sites. For several years she worked with Octagon Developments on a large historic estate in Kingswood, Surrey and acted as the company’s Expert Witness at a successful planning appeal. Anne is the author of a number of gardening books, has written for magazines and has appeared on television and radio gardening programmes. 68

She is currently shortlisted for ‘Designer of the Year’ award, part of the Garden Retail and Garden Industry Awards. Viridian is committed to creating quality private and public landscapes and gardens and has forged strong relationships with property developers and architects who turn time and again to the Studio for support. They have developed a niche offer that provides a service from pre-planning stages through the planning and design process and onto implementation. The Directors are looking forward to an exciting 2016, having already been appointed as the design team to work with Cheltenham Ladies’ College until 2020 as part of a rolling programme to refurbish all the school boarding houses. And, with a small but exquisite garden in Chelsea to finalise in February by craning 1200 litre trees into their planting position, the year will definitely start off on a high! Eco Barrier

The sustainable noise barrier Installation of the basic frame

Ecological noise barriers that offer effective protection against noise pollution or nuisance while also contributing positively to protecting the environment. These are barriers that blend harmoniously into the natural environment and become more attractive as the greenery grows with every year that passes. This plant growth also helps to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere. The extensive green wall from Gramm, called the Eco barrier, is the absolute ‘top of the tree’ when it comes to green noise barriers. A screen of living green is a structure that is able to save space and grow to full size without the need for any artificial edifice, thanks to natural precipitation.

Eco barrier with coconut fibre as foundations layer

The noise barrier is composed of just three components: 1) Framework trellis profiles 2) Outer mats 3) Vertical supports These individual components are put together on site without any bolts and/or welding. This guarantees a “zero failure” system upon assembly. The choice of covering options include: 1) Coconut fibre 2) Green fleece fibre

Advantages:

• No foundations required! • No need to remove spoil from site as it can be used in the construction of the barrier • Life span 50-75 years! • Product has been tested to 67dB “Highly Absorbent” on both sides • Low maintenance costs • Graffiti resistant • No requirement for any supplementary provisions in terms of irrigation installations • Long life durability • EU patented • Highly absorbent • Excellent insulator • Adds to the quality of the environment with greenery and CO2 reduction • Responsible landscaping • Green and completely recyclable • No expense of providing foundations thanks to their natural stability • Costs savings due to the reusing of existing barriers thereby reducing transport and removal costs as well as reducing CO2 emissions • Supplementary applications include for example solar panels, which are also possible options

The port context is rich in history and has a unique character in Montreal. The site is surrounded by water, vegetation and the massive grain silos 5. MU Architecture was commissioned to design an oasis of relaxation in this exceptional place, a little heaven in the heart of the city. It is between the boat-spa, the river and the elevated railway that Bota Bota Gardens take shape. The mandate was to create a relaxing area on the mainland and thus give customers access to the exterior. The project was to become the favorite spot for tourists and locals looking for silence, cooling and shade in the hot summer months, but also a friendly place to swim outdoors in winter with outstanding views on the downtown skyscrapers.

MU Architecture proposed development concept was for a series of green steps that gradually link the boat and the ground. In choosing the container as the main element of construction, there was a way to showcase the concept of loading dock and create a nod to the port context. The layout of the large dock included many technical challenges. Considering the site is surrounded by water, access to heavy machinery was impossible. The railway to the south and dense vegetation made it almost impossible to drive a truck or a small vehicle on site. It was also necessary to build in a semi-permanent manner so that the buildings can be assembled and disassembled easily. Thus only shipping containers, in addition to being a great opportunity to recycle, could be brought in by barge and compose all the volumes that were to house the relaxation areas, steam bath and engine room. large perforated metal sheets with a laser cut squares pattern that provides a set of shadows dancing to the rhythm of the movement of the sun.

These "pavilions" were therefore arranged to create a course oriented towards relaxation and discovery. The architectural intention was to create a simple but yet elegant set of monolithic volumes that frames strong perspectives. The volumes are positioned in order to create continuous alignments with impressive views on the grain silos, Habitat 67, the Old Port and the skyscrapers of the city. Large green roofs cantilever to create sun animated shadows that help generate this oasis feel. Soffits of these roofs consist of

The first volumes greet and direct us to the center of the project. A ray of light draws us to the pool, the central element of the project. The containers thus revolve around this great body of water divided into three basins (cold bath, large hot tub and large pool). The orientation of these basins allows for a maximum of sunlight throughout the day and their irregular shapes generate different areas in order to maximize intimacy. Everything is spread out over a hundred feet and forms the largest non-public outdoor pool in Montreal.

The materials were deliberately kept to a minimum of three. Stone is everywhere on the ground and gives the effect that the basins were entirely excavated into rock. IPE was used due to its resistance to harsh weather and low maintenance. It covers all the containers to soften their impact and to remove the industrial aspect that is intrinsic to them. The roofs were all cladded with white painted steel panels, bringing back that a light industrial touch to the composition. The idea behind the green roofs was to integrate the project into its environment and minimize heat gain. Although

synthetic turf was laid temporarily, the impact of the green platforms views from the top of the boat is impressive and brings some discretion that piques our curiosity. Everything was prefabricated in a factory, disassembled and reassembled on site. Over the mechanical room, the roof becomes a waterfall that drops directly into the pool. The Bota Bota Gardens also feature a radiant heated flooring system that provides access all year long. This pioneering geothermal radiant system is powered by recovering energy from the waste water from the boat added to

water from the St. Lawrence River. A highly engineered geothermal system creates ice with the energy transferred from the waste water. The energy created in the process is used to heat water that runs in the radiant floors and heats up the different basins. A major challenge was indeed to cover all these ducts, tanks and machinery so as to present a surface architecturally refined and minimalist product. This green project is very technical and highly atypical. A second phase to the project is planned in the near future to add a sauna and another lounge area.

Roofers Urged To Make The Most Of Competentroofer Membership As well as alleviating customers of this added pressure, charges for Building Control Inspectors to approve the roof can be avoided, as well as the inconvenience of waiting for an inspector to visit. For domestic work, this saves a fee of somewhere between £200 and £400 a job, and it is even more for commercial work.

Continuing its membership awareness campaign - ‘Get wise, get savvy, get NFRC’ - The National Federation of Roofing Contractors is urging roofers to make the most of their membership of CompetentRoofer, and for non-members to seriously consider its merits. Increasingly seen as a key distinction between companies in the refurbishment market, CompetentRoofer encompasses all types of roofing - including domestic, commercial and industrial properties. The scheme essentially enables roofers to self-certify that their refurbishment work complies with Building Regulations.

Derived from the Government’s Competent Person Scheme and operated by NFRC, CompetentRoofer is open to all roofing contactors in England and Wales and is easy and inexpensive to join. As well as distinctive vehicle stickers and recognisable logos, members will feature on an exclusive website listing and enquiries can even be re-directed to members’ own websites. Regular updates and technical advice are also provided.

Should fifty percent or more of the roof need replacing, then under the Building Regulations, the Local Authority would have to be notified a minimum of 48 hours before work commences.

To register for CompetentRoofer, call 020 7448 3189 or visit www.competentroofer.co.uk 76

Get value for money? Cheap work has hidden cost implications Your property is one of the most expensive and important things that you can own so risking any building work to unregistered contractors, simply because it is the cheaper option, is false economy. •

Cowboy builders can leave your roof unsafe or unfit for purpose, and put the safety of others at risk

their work could also invalidate your building insurance

CompetentRoofer Ltd has reached the prestigious milestone of 500 Registered Contractors for the first time since inception in 2011, where will it stop… the sky is the limit! The CompetentRoofer self-certification scheme has enjoyed great success in 2015, with not only an increase of Registered Contractors and record breaking number of job notifications being issued but also the announcement of the 500th member to join the scheme. A warm welcome to Jones & Hampton Maintenance Services who are a roofing company based in Telford.

You need to either notify your roof refurbishment work via your building control or you can register it via CompetentRoofer, a Government-licenced Competent Person Scheme that allows roofers to self-certify their own work, meaning: •

we notify the council when the work is completed

you have the added reassurance that the contractor has already been vetted prior to becoming a member and will continue to have their work checked

you will automatically receive a ten year insurance-backed warranty, which includes breach of Building Regulations and contractor insolvency.

CompetentRoofer is devoted to helping Registered Contractors not only promote their business to win more work, but also to set and raise the industry standards, offering expert advice, guidance and also technical support from in-house roofing experts.

It takes a long time to create perfection.

Once in a while a product comes along and changes everything, from the way it’s crafted to the way it works. Products are often copied and many are great ideas that never really see true success in their application. Many years are spent searching for a product that will ultimately surpass expectations, stand the test of time and become recognised as the leader in its field. We created one of those successful products nearly two decades ago and still today it has never been equalled. Why? Because we have never compromised on quality.
