ur clients, a fashion designer & a digital designer, are avid collectors of reclaimed architectural artefacts. Together with the existing fabric of the barn, their discoveries form the material palette. The result – part curation, part restoration – is a unique interpretation of the 18th Century threshing barn, a building type that often engenders a uniformity of approach when converted. Rather than demand specific spaces or programmes, their brief focused on materiality and atmosphere, and on creative reuse of the existing volumes. Our task was to combine the quality of the surviving barn fragments with the texture and tone of their found materials. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the 18th Century threshing barn, dairy and stables are a prominent feature from the North Downs
Way. To maintain the barn’s brooding presence - and to provide security and a sense of protection from rolling Channel mists - the barn is usually kept in a closed state. However, industrial-scale kinetic mechanisms create openings that address key views into the countryside.

This structural approach allowed for rapid completion of the building envelope and incorporation of the huge opening mechanisms. One of the central spatial challenges was insertion of a mezzanine (for sleeping and bathing) into the main volume. insurance warranties for a £3.25 million luxury residential renovation of a historic former glassworks. The structural defects insurance specialist was selected by J G Woodcock to advise on the restoration of one of the country’s largest glass manufacturing sites, The Royal Brierley Glassworks in Dudley, West Midlands, which dates back to 1776. The heritage site has now been transformed into an award-winning residential development of 10 two and three-bed houses and 17 one and two-bed apartments and houses, which have all been sold.
When The Royal Brierley Glassworks scheme completed in October 2015, the 10-year structural defects insurance cover took effect and was passed on to the tenants or owners of the houses.

It assisted the family business in seeing through their father’s vision of creating luxury homes for families in the community, while sensitively restoring this historic building.
CRL were appointed midway through the scheme following the passing of entrepreneur and property developer John Woodcock in 2014, who was head of family business J G Woodcock. The Royal Brierley Glassworks in Dudley, awarded Royal Charter in the early 1900s, was bought by J G Woodcock in 2006 and had been in a state of ruin for more than 10 years. J G Woodcock Contracts Manager John Turner said CRL was appointed to put retrospective structural defects insurance in place and protect the properties by arranging a
CRL – partner of choice John Turner said: “CRL took all our requirements on board and worked with the local authority to supply a warranty that suited our individual circumstances. “We needed a project partner to assist and support us on the scheme. “CRL was that partner, they formed a relationship with us and made the process easy as opposed to creating more red tape and resistance. “There was a lot of emotion involved in this project for our family and they were sensitive to the circumstances as well as the unusual stage of construction to be instructed.” The historical site brought numerous issues for the developer, which included maintaining the conservation of the building and making modern bespoke handmade metal framed double glazed windows to match the originals. The listed chimney on the site needed work, as well as to national heritage requirements and retained the period features.

Under normal residential development circumstances, builders and contractors apply for structural warranties ahead of planning being submitted, or at least prior to the foundations being laid. This is so structural defects insurance providers can assist on plans and inspect the development throughout construction. arranging the policy retrospectively allowed plans for The Royal Brierley Glassworks to progress with the assurance of a warranty for the potential purchasing residents. “The conversion of the existing heritage building meant John and his team had a lot of restrictions placed on the build, we were able to take these into

Cementing a strong working relationship, CR CRL L is arranging structural defects insurance for three further J G Woodcock projects, including a £2.7m barn pound new build home in Telford. The level of customer service we have received from CRL CR has been phenomenal. “We e would recommend CRL to any residential developer or local builder that standards and cover. cove “They removed the headache and complexity of the warranty process by managing it all for me. Lindapter CE Marked Hollo-Bolts Specified For Central Square, Leeds
The multi-million U-shaped building is structured around a large fully glazed winter garden with a modern exposed steel design. The atrium framework is secured with Lindapter’s CE Marked Hollo-Bolts which connect structural hollow section back to circular hollow section to form five bowstring trusses. The 27m-tall trusses support a large balcony on level 8 and allow all floors to benefit from natural daylight. Lindapter’s countersunk M16 HolloBolt was chosen to secure the beams and splice connections because of their high
clamping force, independent product approvals and discrete architectural finish. The simple installation required access from one side only and did not require drilling or welding, helping the contractors to complete the project on time. In addition to the atrium structure, Lindapter composite decking fixings were used for suspending building services throughout the entire 12 storey office building, including the first two floors which are dedicated to retail, leisure and health and fitness. 10
As a British pioneer with over 80 years’ experience in designing and manufacturing steel-to-steel connections, Lindapter has an extensive range of independent product approvals. Although Lindapter invented the first blind fastener in 1948, the range has developed significantly and today the Hollo-Bolt is available in various architectural head types, lengths and finishes. To discover the significance of the high clamping force, watch the video at www.lindapter.com

Thermal bridging calculator available LARGE online LONDON HOSPICE
RELIES ON Complex thermal technology criteria calculated in five easy steps In respect of the overall energy efficiency of new buildings, the Approved Document Part L1A and L2A and further BS regulations are becoming more and more stringent in terms of thermal requirements. As a result, thermal bridges are becoming an increasingly sensitive area. To meet the specific needs of architects and energy assessors, Schöck Ltd has launched a free internet-based system for real-time calculation of various complex thermal technology criteria at www.psi.schoeck.co.uk. The calculator enables planners to produce substantiated thermal bridge analysis in just five easy steps and It can be printed it out immediately.

Paul Freeman, facilities supervisor at the hospice, told us that the relationship with Armstrong was excellent. “The equipment is robust and reliable – even after many years of service”, he told us. “If we do have a problem with a machine the engineers come out within 24 hours to get it up and running again, and there’s always good advice when we need to expand or replace a machine”. The machines are operated by dedicated laundry staff and are all in operation seven days a week.
Based on the construction details, the new thermal bridge calculator computes two-dimensional heat flows, isothermals, temperature factors, surface temperatures and psi values (ψ values). The calculation results provide architects, structural engineers and building physicists with all the information needed to produce a detailed thermal bridge analysis. The results log contains all relevant properties and notes relating to the building structure. It does for example reveal whether the building structure is at risk and whether mould and condensation prevention has been adequately considered. If all minimum requirements are met, planners are automatically provided with proof of compliance with the minimum thermal insulation requirements of Approved Document Part L1A, L2A, BS EN 6946 and BS 5250.

A GREEN SECRET WORTH DISCOVERING…

WINDMILL TURNS TO SILICATE PAINT
In the conservation village of Barnham, a traditional Suffolk windmill was converted into a home after World War II. Originally built in the 1820s, the local brick is soft and the windmill has suffered with damp for much of its life. Damp rising through the bricks from the ground should have been able to evaporate away - instead, it was sealed in the wall by the exterior coatings and acrylic paint inside. The build up of moisture eventually caused blown paint and damage to walls. The owners decided there was only one solution. Remove all coatings from the exterior, then apply a breathable masonry paint. Earthborn’s Ecopro silicate masonry system is water based, oil and acrylic free, making it virtually VOC free and very environmentally friendly. It gives the same breathability as limewash but is far superior in terms of longevity and ease of use. Together, the primer and paint form a chemical bond with the underlying mineral substrate. This produces a very hard wearing, water and weather resistant barrier, but it is also highly breathable, so safeguarding the windmill's fabric for future generations. Ecopro Silicate Masonry Paint is available in 24 standard shades and bespoke colours can be produced by Earthborn stockists such as Celtic Sustainables which supplied this project.

After the dark winter months, what a joy that the evenings are getting longer and the urge to cast off those extra layers gets stronger. As the birds start to feather their nests in preparation for their young, so humans instinctively move towards cleansing and clearing. What better way to round this off than by looking at your own interior scheme?
Trends for the natural and real show no sign of letting up, but this season greens take a front seat; think a palette ranging from mints to vivid fern green, highlighted against real woods. Unlike the dark, rich woods favoured in winter, Spring heralds the resurgence of blonde woods with their airy lightness. Step forward the humble door, often overlooked in refurbishment but can be the ticket to making or breaking a scheme.

pre-fabricated units which are simply hoisted in place. A shared community activity building, which meets the strict requirements of the Danish low-energy class 2020, is located centrally as a natural gathering point for all of Himmerland Housing Association’s residents in the area.
ALL-ROUND TRANSFORMATION The Departments 19 and 22 of the housing estate were typical examples of public housing dating from the 1970s. On arrival at the complex, the outdoor areas were deserted. There were desolate and anonymous central car parks and monotonous vegetation in the shape of open lawns and uniform shrubs and bushes. The complex turned its back on the local area and each individual residential unit turned in on itself. The recreational areas were sporadic, fragmented and their identity unclear. The areas in
35
front of the residential units were public right up to the facades, and no-one took ownership of these areas. The existing concrete façades were monotonous, sad and dilapidated. Small windows and ponderous balconies resulted in dark residential units and an unwelcoming appearance. Flats were draughty, and the structure showed severe heat loss in critical areas. The renovation project has transformed this anonymous residential area into a vibrant, socially sustainably district, in which landscape elements ma e it eas t find r a and open front gardens create individual identity for this location. The open front gardens encourage residents to take ownership of the spaces between the houses and add a sense of security in the public spaces. Similarly, the former closed end-walls have been revitalized, with windows and balconies overlooking more of the area.

HIMMERLAND RENOVATION
With the brick gables, black-painted prefabricated timber cladding with glass secti ns r m r t cei in characteristic “roof boxes” and new light stairways in steel and glass, the building complex has left the 1970s behind, setting contemporary new standards for the renovation of public housing in northern Jutland. the ats ha e een fully renovated, accessibility has been improved and, via conversions and extensions, new types of housing have been established that were not previously among the ran e ats ered in these two sections of the housing association. For example, 91 the re r ished ats are now two-storey units and many have large, south-facing balconies. There is still a solid base of well-renovated twoand three r m ats hi e more interesting new home typologies are added to bring a greater diversity of residents into the area.
SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY The overall sustainability strategy is based on a holistic approach, in which the en ir nmenta financia and social aspects are all incorporated into the
concept. We seek to achieve cohesive interplay between the architectonic qualities in the renovation, the enera financia imitati ns and a variety of integral sustainability measures. The Himmerland Housing Association wished the renovation to give emphasis to social sustainability, environmental sustainability, accessibility, openness, variety, diversity and identity. The project is therefore based on a clear, forwardlooking sustainability
strategy, which addresses energy optimisation, rational construction techniques, prefabrication, climatechange resilience, social living qualities and the local community. Cohesion of these factors has been achieved without compromising the aim to create a distinctive new neighbourhood, with low operating and maintenance costs, and all energy-savings in the renovated homes achieved solely by means of passive measures. The landscaping is part of the sustainability and accessibility strategy, replacing most stairs with ramps and introducing the use of sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS), including surface water infi trati n and permea e surfaces in swales to the south of the blocks. South of the central activity building, a small “wetland” is established, with rain beds to handle increasing precipitation. The rain beds collect rainwater so that it does not have to be drained

Desirable Rainwater System for Desirable Residence Yeoman Rainguard’s XL Aluminium Rainwater System was chosen to add the finishing touch to an £11 million property in the desirable area of Virginia Water.
Built by development company Watersmead Homes who pride themselves in building properties of quality and style that exceed expectations, the Georgian style home covers approximately 12,000 square feet over 4 floors. Constructed out of Cotswold Stone, Watersmead ensured that the property combines practicality with style meeting the high standards and demands of the discerning purchaser.
Meeting such standards required the use of high quality building materials and systems which included choosing the right rainwater system.
“We obviously needed gutters and downpipes which not only matched the style of the house but were of a quality which would give the homeowner many years of maintenance free service whilst retaining its colour and style well into the future. Yeoman Rainguard’s stylish XL Aluminium rainwater system fitted the bill.” Explained Mrs Gill Burns of Watersmead Homes.
150 x 100mm MOG XL Aluminium gutters were installed along with a 75 x 75mm square downpipe with the stylish look being completed with Cast Aluminium Plain Hoppers.
Finished in a durable black textured powder coating which eliminates colour bleaching and ensures a life expectancy of the rainwater system to that of 25 years and more. “The rainwater systems look perfect on the finished property and we are very pleased with the quality of products and service that Yeoman Rainguard gave us.” Concluded Mrs Burns. www.rainguard.co.uk

Floodcheck
Whilst studying at London University in 1972, William Saint worked at a small chain of retail shops specialising in white goods. Saint saw the extensive damage that these products could cause by flooding and leaking if broken. He invented the first Floodcheck product, the MANUAL model as a solution for protecting properties by preventing flooding from these machines. In 1998, working with the latest microprocessor electronics, William Saint designed a more sophisticated product and the AUTO model was invented. The Auto model was entered in the Essex County Council‚ Innovation Competition and won the Innovation Award. The product was later granted International Trademarks and Patents. It was tested by the UK water standards to WRAS Requirements and so Floodcheck was formed. Following further research and developments in it’s products the “interceptor” product was launched in 2011. It was awarded the coveted NATIONAL HOMEBUILDING and Renovation Award for Innovation and Excellence. For more information visit www.floodcheck.co.uk

Underlay and underfloor heating have always sat uncomfortably together. The reason: underfloor heating needs underlay with low thermal resistance – and the only suitable products are dense and hard, more suited to commercial use. But that’s all changing with HeatWave from QA Flooring Solutions. It is the first underlay that combines a low tog rating (1.2) with a super soft PU foam that gives excellent comfort underfoot. HeatWave is also flame retardant – making it a safe choice for any property where underfloor heating is used. ‘TACT TILES’
ISLINGTON CUSTOMER CENTRE
Olivers Contracts chose a UZIN system to install luxury vinyl tiles at the Islington Customer Centre. Approximately 900 m2 of old flooring had become contaminated and worn from general foot traffic. Overall, the floor appeared soft and a little unstable. A further concern was that premium luxury vinyl tiles needed to be installed within open and expansive areas containing large windows. Consequently, the floor would be subject to a considerable amount of natural light and potential heat. The floor preparation and installation therefore had to be perfect so Olivers Contracts turned to UZIN’s premium quality product systems to resolve the problems. A Wolff Samba machine with a diamond bits was first used to remove all contamination and loose latex. UZIN PE 280 primer was used to create a barrier between the cementitious subfloor and UZIN NC 110 calcium sulphate based smoothing compound. The luxury vinyl tiles were then installed with UZIN KE 66 high temperature adhesive. The project was completed without any complications. The client was exceptionally pleased with the finish throughout all areas and there hasn’t been any subfloor or product failuresince.GarethJenkins,ProjectManageratIslingtonCouncilsaid“Iamvery pleased with the quality and appearance of the finished flooring.” For further information about UZIN products visit – www.uzin.com/products
‘Tact Tiles’ Antistatic and ESD tiles are perfect for areas such as laboratories, computer suites, electronic assembly areas or any areas where static electricity generation is an issue. Our Range of ESD (electro static dissipative) tiles are specifically designed and manufactured to prevent electro static discharges from affecting or damaging electrical devices as well as for the safety of employees. Greenwich Turns Greener With Aliva UK’s Insulated Render
Guardian UK Earns ‘Responsible Sourcing’ Certification
An ambitious regeneration scheme at Greenwich Peninsula in London is showing off its green credentials with a sophisticated insulated render façade from Aliva UK. The development by Wates Construction is one of the largest schemes in Europe. Architects Jestico + Whiles asked Aliva, the UK leader in façades and interior finishes for a cost effective yet aesthetically pleasing finish to an eight storey residential block of 240 apartments. Aliva supplied 5,500sqm of white acrylic TermoK8 insulated render to give the buildings a crisp, pared-back look that brought the project in on budget. The installers were Regency Plastering. The architects said: “We chose Aliva for Greenwich Peninsula because they provide a successful selection from a high quality, through coloured acrylic render system. The finish needed to provide a calm, understated composition, which has been achieved beautifully with a very neat, crisp finish throughout the elements of render within the development."
Guardian Industries UK Ltd. (Guardian) has earned the coveted BES 6001 accreditation for its responsible sourcing of materials. After independent assessment by the British Standards Institution, the awarding body, Guardian UK received a “Very Good” score, highlighting the company’s long-term focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility. Specifically, it acknowledges the “Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products.” Part of Guardian Industries Corp. – a leading global manufacturer of high-quality commercial, residential, interior and automotive glass products – Guardian secured accreditation in late December. Having the BES 6001 certification not only shows Guardian to be a responsible company that cares for the environment, noted Steven Scrivens, Marketing Manager for Guardian Glass UK & Ireland, but it also helps it to stand out amongst its competitors.`

Flexenergy Launches UK First in PB Pipe Network Control
Flexenergy, one of the UK's leading providers of district heating scheme pipe networks, has developed the UK's first pre-insulated valve system for Polybutene (PB-1) pipe applications. V-Flex will transform the ability of operators to control and service PB networks by delivering zonal control via pre-insulated valve technology that can be fusion welded directly to the main network. The valve innovation includes a key-operated steel ball valve inside a polyethylene casing, insulated by PUR foam, and incorporates PB tails for a fully welded connection to a Polybutene pipe network. The V-Flex valve system means it is now possible to create an all-plastic fusion weld to the main network, thereby avoiding a secondary joint, with its inherent weakness. The valves can be specified for single or twin pipe applications and come in a number of chamber sizes (to accommodate depth variation) in order to provide flexibility in network or zonal control. Gaia Heats Hektor’s House…Or Rather His Barn
When somebody books a beautiful historic timber-framed barn as a wedding venue, they want to see the mellow oak beams in their natural glory; they do not want to see unsightly steel radiators bolted to them. That is why landowner and developer, Hektor Rous, chose Gaia’s wet underfloor heating system in the renovation of the Grade II listed barn at the family seat, Henham Park, in Suffolk. Now, Henham Park has become a much sought-after wedding venue thanks to the sensitive renovation of its historic timber barn. For this large oak-framed building, which takes some heating due to the high-vaulted roof. Hektor chose underfloor heating. “I have a power-floated concrete floor providing excellent thermal mass,” he explains. “As a Grade II-listed structure, the barn must be kept, as far as possible, in its original state which did not include wall mounted radiators. With the new concrete floor, a UFH system was a clear choice.” For further information on Gaia Climate Solutions, please contact 0845 434 9488 or visit www.gaia.co.uk

Inta Goes HIPER For Heat Interface Units Inta has introduced its ‘HIPER’ high performance heat interface unit (HIU), designed to deliver heating and hot water whilst improving energy efficiency and minimising costs in multi-dwelling developments. Installed in shared residential buildings, the HIU distributes heating and domestic hot water from a central plant system to individual properties. By removing the need for each area to have a conventional boiler, gas flue and hot water cylinder, the interface units dramatically reduce build costs for developers. Inta has worked to develop a product that has more features and benefits than any other HIU on the market. With Inta’s HIPER HIU, landlords can integrate renewable energy sources into the system, shrinking the size of a building’s carbon footprint and reducing energy costs for tenants, as well as improving reliability. Passivhaus Design Maintains Indoor Environment Using Omnie MVHR
With less than 400 PassivHaus certified properties so far completed across the UK, the ultra-low energy standard from Germany can still be viewed as nascent in this country, though there are many compliant components and technologies available to assist in these designs: such as the mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system offered by Omnie. The highly efficient Passive house certified CA550 heat recover unit (HRU) has in fact just been installed as a crucial element to the building services within a private residential property under construction near Tiverton in Devon. Gale & Snowden is the specialist architectural consultant and passive house designer responsible for the specification process Gale & Snowden identified the HRU as being the most appropriate, low energy model on the market for the project and the fact that Omnie is an Exeter based company also fitted with our ethos of trying to buy local.

Panasonic Unveils Revolutionary New Etherea Air Conditioning Range Panasonic has relaunched its Etherea range with an innovative new line of products. The new Z and XZ domestic air conditioning units are a brand new design: sleek, compact and modern, suitable for any interior. They are also the first air conditioning products from Panasonic that have been fully optimised to contain the R32 refrigerant, offering the most efficient performance, and so are more environmentally friendly than ever before.

R32 refrigerant with low Global Warming Potential (GWP) Outstanding efficiency A+++ / A++ Comfort features – super quiet technology – only 19dB(A) Sleek, compact design Nanoe i air-purifying system and Econavi sensors with Z range
Panasonic has launched two new ranges of domestic air conditioning units that are a huge step forward in air conditioning unit design, perfectly complementing its existing Etherea line up. The high spec Z and XZ range features the white Z7SKE, Z9SKE, Z12SKE, Z15SKE and Z18SKE indoor wall-mounted models, and the silver XZ7SKE, XZ9SKE, XZ12SKE, and XZ18SKE units.
unobstrusive, but also more compact than ever before. With this clean, fresh, white design, the Panasonic Z range leads the market in its appearance, ensuring that wherever the units are installed they won’t impact on the look and feel of the interior aesthetic. The unobtrusive and sleek design of the new Etherea range is echoed in the noise levels at which it operates. The new Z and XZ ranges are incredibly quiet, operating at 19dB(A), to offer the utmost comfort to the end user. This ultra-low level of noise is equivalent to night-time in the counrtyside, ensuring that the air conditioning units cause no disturbance to sleep or distraction in the office environment.
Whilst other systems use refrigerant R410A as standard, Panasonic’s new Etherea products use the environmentally friendly R32 alternative. R32 is a single component refrigerant which means it is easy to recycle, and it also has a much lower impact on global warming, reducing the effect on global warming by 67%. By utilising this refrigerant in its new products, Panasonic is responding to customers needs and industry requirements.
The new Z range of Etherea products has been fundamentally redesigned to suit the interior of any home or commerical property. The sleek new design of the units means they are not only
The Z range includes Panasonic’s EcoNavi sensor and Nanoe i air purifying system. Econavi features an in-built human activity sensor and a new sunlight detection technology to adjust output, therefore providing the best comfort at all times, whilst still saving energy. CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK 24 - 26 May 2016. New Masterplan for Festival Announced
T
he seventh edition of Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) promises to be the best and most ambitious yet, as new locations, brands and installations join this vibrant festival in one of London’s most idiosyncratic and creative quarters. In a first for the festival, organisers have appointed architecture practice OMMX to create a strategic masterplan for the event. The plan marks a significant point in CDW’s development, with the format expanding to eight exhibition venues, a gateway destination to Clerkenwell’s showrooms, an installation trail and a brand new destination at Spa Fields. Clerkenwell Design Week, sponsored by Renault, will take place 24 – 26 May 2016 across Clerkenwell.
STRATEGIC MASTERPLAN The new, integrated approach to planning the festival across both the temporary (exhibitions and installations) and the permanent (showrooms and fringe) will improve the flow and navigation around the many and varied elements, creating a compelling experience for the visitor as they explore all that Clerkenwell has to offer. OMMX, an emerging practice based in Clerkenwell, has developed a plan based on an understanding of context and experiential quality. OMMX’s work on the Clerkenwell Design Week masterplan will help build a cohesive story as the festival expands and develops. Hikaru Nissanke and Jon Lopez, Directors of OMMX, said:

CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK to become a festival favourite with live content and temporary spaces designed to connect, relax and recharge. The park space at St James’s Church Garden will become a key destination as part of Clerkenwell Design Week’s new look with the new exhibition Project hosting leading international brands presenting furniture, lighting and product design, alongside the hugely successful interior products show Additions. A new show, British Collection, will showcase some of the UK’s most exciting home- grown talent within the barrel-roofed Crypt of St James’s Church. Each will enhance the wellestablished CDW exhibitions; Detail at the Order of St John and pavilion on St John’s Square and Platform at the unique underground space House of Detention. Long-time collaborators Icon Magazine will again stage Icon’s House of Culture exhibition at another iconic Clerkenwell destination; Fabric. Underpinning Clerkenwell Design Week, the area’s multitude of design-led showrooms is a vital part of this unique event. For the first time Brewhouse Yard off St John Street will act as a gateway to the showrooms, many of which are clustered close by. In addition, the Goldsmith’s Centre on Britton Street will also join the festival as a key destination for live content with fresh programming and activity throughout CDW.
FRESH VISUAL IDENTITY For 2016 London designers Studio Parallel have created a new visual identity for this year’s festival. The campaign, ‘Covered’, plays to the strength and variety within Clerkenwell Design Week, through five
thematic images from furniture and lighting, design talent, to materials and architecture, all unified with the festival’s signature colour, magenta. Paul Fox, Creative Director of Studio Parallel, said; ‘We feel that it’s the right time for a change in design direction. We worked to achieve the right balance to add a new visual narrative, and still make it instantly recognisable as Clerkenwell Design Week to the audience.’ Set designer Kei Yoshino and photographer Lydia Whitmore collaborated to bring the themes to life. Clerkenwell Design Week 2016 will celebrate the extraordinary creativity of the area with hundreds of events, from sitespecific installations and new launches, to workshops and thought-provoking debates across a huge range of venues. William Knight, Show Director, Clerkenwell Design Week, said; ‘The expansion of Clerkenwell Design Week‘s exhibition programme to eight major locations is a sign of how dynamic the creative industries are in this area, and a testament to the successes of previous years’ shows. We have new exhibitions, a new masterplan and a new visual identity. But it is the energy and sense of community among architects and designers here that inspires us, and helps make the festival so unique in London.’ Festival events take place across Clerkenwell, and registration is free.

STEEL WINDOW ASSOCIATION
CHEYNE PLACE
Metal windows allow light to flood new Chelsea basement.
A
design brief that required the maximum amount of daylight to enter a four-bedroom flat within the ground floor and newly-created basement of a terraced property in Chelsea, resulted in Henri Bredenkamp, director at Studio 30 Architects, selecting bespoke steel windows and doors from Steel Window Association member Monk Metal Windows. In digging out the new basement to the Victorian building, a light well was created and three large W40 steel screens and doors were manufactured and installed by Monk Metal Windows. Employed on three facades, the metal windows serve as a unifying feature that also picks up on the block like pattern of the existing sash windows above. To serve the ground floor living area, an eight-pane screen was employed measuring 3m high x 1.2m wide. Within the master bedroom, which is located in the basement, a screen
over 2.6m high x 4.5m wide with double doors was designed to fill the entire end wall. The biggest item was a large, partly angled screen designed to follow the line of the staircase. This rises from 2.1m to over 4.2m while measuring 4.7m in width and containing 2.6m high double doors that allow access into the light well at the bottom of the staircase. All the windows and doors supplied were hot dipped galvanised and polyester powder coated in matt anthracite grey, RAL 7016. They were glazed with 24mm insulating double glazed units. The W40 range of double glazed windows from Monk Metal Windows offers slim sightlines while meeting Building Regulations for weathertightness, air infiltration, water penetration and wind loading. The W40 range features dual air seals incorporated in the opening vents which greatly enhance resistance to air and water penetration. single units together and tubular steel profiles can be added for strength or as a feature. A complete range of ironmongery is available while purpose made pressed metal sills, flashings and metal faced insulated infill panels can be fitted to the basic panel. Henri Bredenkamp comments: “The intention was always to fully glaze as many of the facades as we could in order to let ample daylight into the new master bedroom and corridor but we wanted something other than the standard bifold look. We decided to use metal windows because they look interesting and have slim sight lines. Monk was one of the few companies that could provide the height of door we required. They delivered on time and the steel windows are of high quality; the client is very happy with the result. For further information on the Steel Window Association, please visit www. steel-window-association.co.uk or call 0844 249 1355.

KEBONY CLADDING
KEBONY CLADDING FOR SWEDEN’S FIRST ROUND PASSIVE HOUSE Villa Circuitus sets a new precedent for high quality sustainable design
L
ondon: 29 March 2016] Developers Simone Kreutzer and Tommy Wesslund have recently completed work on an eco-home in Sweden, clad in Kebony. Villa Circuitus, meaning ‘a going around’ in Latin, is a spacious, circular 175 sq. m passive house containing four bedrooms and open plan kitchen and dining area.
with special expertise in energy and ventilation, knowledge they brought to the design of their latest project. They were the creative minds behind this project and cooperated with Nina Sandahl from SAJT Arkitektstudio to design the bespoke home, Sweden’s first circular passive house. The house has a 35 sq. m veranda on the second storey, from which residents can view the beautiful landscape. Surrounding this veranda is a balustrade with integrated solar panels, which make the home self-sufficient for most of the year. The round shape is carefully designed to
The Villa Circuitus was built to meet passive house requirements, with strict environmental demands in terms of design and construction materials. Both Simone Kreutzer and Tommy Wesslund are certified passive house experts

KEBONY CLADDING expose the smallest surface possible to the outdoor air and thus reduces heat loss. Large windows around the perimeter of the building allow lots of natural light to illuminate the property throughout the day and also help heat the building. Every window is custom made to retain twice as much heat as normal windows and the air circulating through the house
is kept at a steady temperature by a two stage heat exchanger which passes the air through a ground based water heater then a post-heater. This two stage process efficiently warms the air in winter to a temperature of 18.5°C – 20.5°C and cools it in summer so the air circulating is 16°C - 17°C. CREDITS All credits: Kebony
Alongside these high-tech elements is the widespread use of natural, environmentally friendly construction materials. Recycled paper and glass are used throughout the structure and the whole house is built on a wooden frame with Kebony cladding. Kebony is a modified softwood that acts as a sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood. Developed in Norway, the Kebony technology is an environmentally friendly, patented process, which enhances the properties of fast growing sustainable softwood with a bio-based liquid. By impregnating the wood with furfuryl alcohol, the wood’s cell wall is polymerised resulting in greatly improved durability and dimensional stability. Kebony therefore offers the performance qualities of a tropical hardwood, such as teak or mahogany, without the environmental damage. The balancing of modern and natural elements can also be

seen in the external aesthetic of the house which interweaves beautiful Kebony cladding with striking orange panels around the windows. The colour of Kebony wood mellows over time from a rich brown to a silver grey patina, giving the whole structure a quiet, natural look, while the contrasting orange panels emulates the warmth and comfort emanating from the interior. The Kebony cladding helps the passive house to complement its natural surroundings, blending in with the rocky landscape, while also offering fantastic protection from the cold weather. Simone Kreutzer, developer of Villa Circuitus, commented “We have a passion for making sustainable homes and so we needed to ensure that every element of the house was responsibly sourced. The solar panelled balustrade, the recycled insulation and the striking Kebony cladding all help to realise our vision of a truly sustainable eco-home.” Per Thyberg, Country Manager Sweden at Kebony said: “We at Kebony feel excited to be part of Simone and Tommy’s innovative design. Now the Villa is complete it looks stunning, has a fantastic open plan layout and sets a new watermark for sustainability. We hope to be involved in many more projects of this quality in the future.”

STYLE AND PERFORMANCE IN OAKS RESTAURANT WASHROOMS – THANKS TO RELCROSS. PPHE Hotel Group is known for brands that offer quality with an individual style and that’s definitely true of the washrooms attached to Oaks Restaurant and Bar in Nottingham. Reviews on Tripadvisor have likened them to a Butcher’s cold storage room with “Freezer” style doors and Hadrian unpainted steel cubicles. Steel clad walls and stainless steel sink troughs complete the fittings along with bare industrial light bulbs. Hadrian toilet cubicles are supplied in the UK by Relcross Ltd. They can be supplied to match any RAL paint colour as well as in a number of special effect finishes including brushed or polished stainless steel. The 5 galvannealed steel “Elite” cubicles fitted at Oaks are floor mounted and head rail braced with privacy ensured by using continuous stop and hinge sight line fillers along the door edges. Relcross Sales and Marketing Director, Stuart McMaster, said “Modern 57
plastics, are surprisingly durable although it is true that nothing really matches the ultimate durability of steel. Many companies are realising that the whole life costs of high quality washroom equipment are considerably lower than less robust and less stylish options. We’re confident that Oak’s cubicles will go on looking good for years to come” For further information about Hadrian Toilet Partitions and Lockers visit www.hadrian-cubicles.co.uk, call Relcross on 01380 729600 or email sales@relcross.co.uk

COUNTRY HOUSE RENOVATION
Architects: Mide Architetti
T
he project site involves an old country house, built in 1887 in the immediate neighborhood of Lucca and a most recent farmhand’s cottage. The buildings are integrated in the countryside of Lucca and maintain its typical characteristics. Specifically, the buildings are located in a hilly landscape, between gentle slopes, where oaks and chestnuts lick the property. In this background, the renovation has been directed to both the maintenance and the enhancement of typical elements of the local architecture, such as exposed brick wall, stone of Matraia and chestnut wood. Pursuing this goal, and in full respect of the typical features, the components and materials used have been revised in a contemporary way, adopting the most appropriate construction techniques, in order to ensure the achievement of the best
possible result. Inside the country house we sought to manually apply, using the traditional spatulas and sponges, natural lime-based plasters that highlight the irregular rocky surface of the walls. The recovery of beams and hollow tiles by sandblasting, is an explicit call to the traditional Tuscan architecture, refreshed by the bleaching of the ceilings. The exterior was deliberately kept unchanged in surface and holes, in order to maintain its historicity without sacrificing
59
the charm. Therefore, we opted for basic external fixtures made of steel. In the garden the large swimming pool is integrated with the surrounding landscape, respecting the vegetation and the secular olive trees, leaved unaltered. The adjacent cottage has been completely renovated inside, opting for contemporary materials and colours: the concrete floor and the black lavatory contribute to give a new identity to the building. Finally, in the hypogeum you can find a spa area consisting of a large tub and a cedar wood sauna.

The Innovation in Architecture & Design stream, sponsored by Marshalls, showcases a broad range of case studies and project types – from the new Alder Hey Children’s Hospital to architect Flanagan Lawrence’s
VISION LONDON acoustic shells on the Littlehampton seafront. The first day of seminars will feature one of the UK’s most innovation-packed homes: SOLCER House in Bridgend, South Wales. This is a one-off demonstration house, designed and constructed as part of the Wales Low Carbon Research Institute’s SOLCER project, which is led by the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University, and supported by Swansea University’s SPECIFIC research project and other partners. The Building Health & Wellness stream, sponsored by Saint-Gobain, focuses on a number of innovations which are emerging to help measure and enhance wellbeing in buildings. Saint-Gobain have created the Multi-Comfort standard – a way of designing sustainable, healthy and comfortable buildings that also achieve the Passivhaus standard in energy efficiency. The first UK project built to the standard, a new sports and drama hall for King’s Hawford Junior School in Worcester, designed by Associated Architects, is close to completion. As well as promoting high levels of energy efficiency and thermal comfort in the school, the standard focuses on audio, indoor air and visual comfort to create a quality learning environment for teachers and students.
Stacey Temprell will be outlining the Multi-Comfort concept and the story of the debut UK project as part of the Building Health & Wellness seminar programme on 7 June. Full details of all other seminar streams are now published on the Vision website, where readers can also register for a free of charge visitor pass to attend the event, giving access to all seminars, the exhibition and networking events. Vision has also agreed later opening hours for 2016 – as some busy Architects would like to visit the event in the early evening. Opening hours on the 7th June will be 10am until 9pm, with the exhibition continuing into the evening after the main seminar programmes finish. Drinks will be served to all exhibitors and visitors from 5.30pm, who will be able to browse the exhibition, attend the popular Pecha Kucha sessions organised by the NLA and participate in other exclusive evening events to be announced. THE UK’S BIGGEST CONSTRUCTION EVENT IS BACK!
Organised by Media 10, UK Construction Week is back following its successful launch in 2015.
H
up Bringing together nine shows under one roof to form the most comprehensive industry event in decades, UK Construction Week will return to the Birmingham NEC on 18 – 20 October 2016. With some of the industry’s biggest names already signed up including JCB, Kingspan, Screwfix and CEMEX, as well as support from a growing number of leading trade associations, visitors will not want to miss UK Construction Week 2016. In 2015, UK Construction Week attracted more than 24,000 trade visitors and 650 exhibitors and this year’s show is set to be even bigger, building upon the solid platform of the inaugural event. Not only will the show provide visitors with the chance to benefit from exclusive deals from leading brands but it will also give them the opportunity to network with fellow professionals, learn more about the latest legislation and the future of the construction industry, see the latest innovations first hand and progress their careers through learning new skills. Lee Newton, CEO of Media 10, commented: “As the largest event dedicated to knowledge sharing, championing good practice and
problem solving, UK Construction Week is the environment for the whole industry to look, talk, plan, learn and do business; providing answers for what, when, where and how we build our future. Research proves that the biggest attraction for visitors is the vast number of products and diverse range of services on offer. There is no other construction event that can compete at this level.” Some of the key issues that will be discussed on the main stage at the event will be diversity in construction, tackling the skills and housing shortages, BIM and much more, while the individual show feature areas will offer a wealth of further, sector-specific information. For exhibitors, the event provides a unique opportunity to interact with decision makers and purchasers from across the industry as 70 per cent of the UK’s Top 10 house building firms, 60 per cent of the UK’s Top 100 architectural firms and all of the UK’s Top 20 construction companies attended the show last year. This unique mix of visitors is why so many exhibitors have rebooked from last year’s event and is the key behind UK Construction Week’s success as it brings the whole industry together. In addition to the comprehensive business offering, UK Construction
78
Week will once again host a wide variety of evening entertainment including a casino night at the worldrenowned Genting International Casino, the extremely popular UKCW beer festival and an exclusive launch of the Construction Enquirer Awards. Lee Newton added: “We recognise that taking the time out to attend a trade show is a significant investment no matter the size of the company and so the after hours entertainment programme will provide a valuable extension of the event for professionals to relax and continue to network, particularly to those who have travelled a significant distance.” Consisting of Timber Expo, Build Show, Civils Expo, Plant & Machinery Live, Energy 2016, Smart Buildings 2016, Surface & Materials Show, HVAC 2016 and Grand Designs Live, UK Construction Week will span five halls of the NEC catering for the entire spectrum of the industry from architect to installer. With support from trade associations and partners from across the industry UK Construction Week is on course to deliver a relevant, useful and profitable show experience for all who attend. For more information, booking enquiries and exhibitor testimonials please visit www.ukconstructionweek. com or follow @UK_CW on Twitter.

H67 STUDIO PRACTICE
Habitat 67, an iconic architectural landmark not only in North America but also across the world, marked a beginning.
T
he beginning of an organic, dynamic and democratic residential space, where every citizen has its own unique light and space. This beautifully designed and executed masterpiece catapulted the carriers of Moche Sadie and his team, and inspires architecture ever since. This influence can be found in Ricardo Boffil’s kafka castle (1968), Kisho Kurokawa’s Nkagin Capsule Tower (1972) and even recently in BIG’s mountain Dwelling (2008). Our project consisted of refurbishing a Habitat 67 unit that was remodeled many times in the past, adding layers of opacity to the original design. As a result, our primary challenge was to renew with its
past design philosophy. Functional but minimal design of open space was hence chosen as a medium to obtain this concept. This was obtained by removing all interior walls to optimize light management and by adding transparency and reflection of glass to the exposed original cement walls. A modern touch of moving cubes were introduced in the interior design of the apartment, recalling the fact that these hanging boxes attain equilibrium, in the background of moving water. A conversation between inside and out was consequently restored, in this modern times version of hanging gardens. Integrating the qualities of a suburban home into an urban high-rise, through a medium of prefabricated forms was
81
a revolutionary concept that rethought the apartmentbuilding design in 1967; and we revived this concept, in a weightless and panoramic environment of hanging concrete, in 2015.
