ANX PLACES ZINC AND WOOD
VOLUME OVERLOOKING THE SIERRA PELONA MOUNTAINS
Weary from years of two-hour work commutes, the project owners engaged ANX to develop a new residence within a mile of their Southern California manufacturing company’s facility and offices. Interested in maintaining a similar connection to the land as their current residence, an undeveloped rugged sandstone terrain, bisected by a dry river and dotted with native yucca, oak, sagebrush, and beavertail cactus, was selected as the site for the new home.
In response to the challenge of creating spaces to view, measure, and engage with the diversity of the surrounding semi-arid landscape, the Arroyo Oak House is open and transparent, immersed in natural light, and visually integrated with the surrounding Sierra Pelona Mountains. Optimizing the connection to this unique topography, multiple interlocking program-specific pavilions are oriented across the site. The placement and overlap of these pavilions result in varying scales of gardens, terraces, and decks, encouraging landscape elements to literally and perceptually permeate the home’s interior.
Upon approach, an elevated, horizontally-clad zinc volume is presented, both transparent to focus attention on the distant ridgelines, and semi-reflective to capture the impression of the clouds. Entering below the elevated mass and into the living level, primary apertures located on the perimeter and secondary fissures between the pavilions collage distinct mountain and sky views. Split-level interior spaces expand into exterior terraces, collapsing the domestic environment upon the rural landscape.
The lower level, containing a home gym, laundry room, guest suite, and pool terrace, extends into the hillside, providing an unobstructed panoramic vista. The continuous materiality of cedar and limestone accentuates the experiential relationship between inside and out. This connection to the outdoors continues on the upper level, which contains the primary bedroom, home office, two secondary bedrooms, linear balcony, and lounge deck.
The pool terrace and adjacent open-air living room unfold onto the meadow and ultimately the arroyo below, augmenting a natural, preexisting path for animals with a minimally delineated walking loop with which to explore the site. The sensitive nature of the fire-susceptible landscape, as well as the unique climate, solar, and seasonal conditions, called for careful positioning of the home, as well as consideration of plant specifications and irrigation requirements.

ESG SWITCHABLE ™ GLASS FINDS SPIRITUAL HOME AT ST DIONIS CHURCH
ESG Switchable™ glass has been used to create a new multiuse space for the church and community at St Dionis Church in Parsons Green, London. Ion Glass, which provides bespoke structural glass solutions for a range of distinctive buildings, including churches, specified ESG’s Switchable™ glass as part of a stunning refurbishment of the historic Anglican church building. Using meticulously cut ESG Switchable™ panels, Ion Glass installed new glazing to gothic arches at the rear of the church, separating the main worship area from the newly enclosed area. They also added new privacy glazing to shield the church hall from the public gaze, so that meetings and functions such as weddings can take place in privacy.
The church’s gothic arch shapes made for quite a challenge for leading glass processor ESG, whose expert technicians cut the required panels to the precise shape of each arch
using advanced CNC techniques while preserving the functionality of the privacy interlayer. This complex task also required the Switchable™ interlayer to be cut to the exact shape and dimensions of each arch with pinpoint accuracy, making each panel a truly bespoke project.
ESG and Ion Glass worked together to ensure that not only did the ESG Switchable™ glass fit to perfection, but that the connections for mains wiring to provide privacy at the touch of a button were positioned so that the wiring itself could be routed as discreetly as possible in this historic setting.
Ion Glass and ESG have collaborated successfully on a number of projects, ESG’s glass processing expertise perfectly complementing Ion Glass’s innovative and imaginative approach to refurbishing and replanning unique built environments.
Susan Sinden, Commercial Manager for ESG Group Ltd commented, “This has been one of our most satisfying projects, as our experts really enjoy finding solutions for unusual applications. This was one of our most complex CNC challenges to date and the end results are quite exceptionally beautiful.”
ESG is renowned for its collaborative approach, working in consultation with its clients on both product development and delivering world class glazing solutions for a multiplicity of applications and settings. www.esg.glass

SIX OF THE QUICKEST AND MOST COST-EFFECTIVE KITCHEN UPDATES TO TRANSFORM YOUR SPACE
1. PERFECT YOUR PAINT
“There is no better way to freshen up a space than adding a lick of paint. Whether you opt for calming neutrals or striking bolds, re-painting the walls in your kitchen can transform the space without breaking the bank.
“A fresh lick of paint can really freshen up a room, giving it a new lease of life. If you’re working with a small space, or prefer to keep things neutral, dove grey or light caramel hues can provide the perfect backdrop for cooking meals and spending time with the family.
“If you’re looking for a bolder change, why not opt for a brighter hue, or something darker like a forest green or midnight blue? Making a drastic colour change can completely change the feel of the space, but make sure the colour you pick compliments your current kitchen fittings if you’re not planning to update them.
2. SWITCH UP YOUR KITCHEN SPLASHBACK
“For instant impact, consider replacing or installing a new kitchen splashback behind your sink and hob. Tricky tiling and grubby grouting can easily be avoided by opting for an aluminium kitchen splashback, such as the Alloy range from Bushboard, which is available in a variety of beautifully patterned designs and finishes.
“The benefit of opting for this type of splashback is that they can be easily cut to fit your desired size and shape, meaning they’re easy to install in any area of the kitchen – regardless of its shape and size. They’re also simple to clean and maintain, making them perfect for busy households.
“The joy of aluminium options is that they can be cut, drilled, and shaped to fit required measurements using standard tools – making them the perfect DIY update. The lightweight design also means they are easy to manoeuvre into place and because the panels come as solid, opaque pieces, they can be effortlessly fitted over unfinished surfaces. This makes for a much quicker update than a tiled equivalent, without involving too much disruption.
"A few relatively simple changes can make a noticeable impact on the look and feel of your space, whilst being a cost-effective alternative to a full renovation."
3. WORKSURFACES WITH THE ‘WOW’ FACTOR
“Bring your kitchen back to life by replacing tired worksurfaces. Compact laminate worktops are a great option if you’re looking to achieve a high-quality look for less, as they can have a huge influence on the look of a kitchen without ripping it out and starting afresh.
“Compact laminate worktops are fully waterproof and boast realistic stone textures for a fraction of the price of the raw materials they emulate. An ideal solution for family kitchens, this type of surface is hardwearing and easy to care for, too.
“For a seamless look, continue the surfaces up the wall as a sleek looking upstand or splashback. This is something a tradesperson can help fit and can be done in a day’s work.
4. ACCESSORISE WITH STYLE
“The little touches can often have the biggest effect, so if you are time strapped, consider paying attention to the smaller details in your space, such as soft furnishings, artwork or furniture.
“Accessories are a great way to add a pop of colour to the space without any commitment, so be fun and bold with your choices – you can recycle into another room if you fancy a change next year.
5. INSTANT ILLUMINATION
“Wireless innovations make it easier than ever to install and control lighting – even DIY novices.
“Rearranging existing sources or incorporating additional features will improve the ambience of the space – especially as we move into autumn. Under-cupboard spotlights are a great way to not only set the mood, but illuminate spaces that you may want to draw attention to, such as stand-out worksurfaces or strategically-placed accessories.
“Strip LEDs are another handy addition to create impact under worktops or shelving, with plinth lighting providing the opportunity to layer illumination in all areas of the kitchen.
6. THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAIL
“Swapping out the hardware on kitchen cabinets and sinks can transform your kitchen in moments. These small changes can have a large impact, elevating your kitchen to create a cohesive and well put together scheme.
“I’d always recommend co-ordinating these elements for a consistent look. Whether you opt for brushed brass, stainless steel, matt black or copper – ensure this finish is the thread that ties together any metallics in your kitchen’s design scheme.”

We are building on the success of 2022, with a collection of stunning homes in the pipeline, however, we want to continue our growth and are actively searching for new sites that will allow us increase and improve our offering. Typically, we have focused our operations in and around high-profile areas of North London and the Home Counties, but we are expanding our parameters to take our bespoke product further afield into new markets where there is strong demand.”
"Our interior design team has worked hard to showcase the bespoke joinery and furniture that our purchasers and clients can use to complete the look of their new home."
Rutu added: “We see our Amara Family continuing to grow with the mammoth momentum we have seen over the last decade. We’re excited for the launch of our next swathe of developments, whilst we also hope to grow our Bespoke Homes division that will see us further elevate the design and quality attributes that we have become known for.”

CABERDEK HELPS KEEP BERKSHIRE SELFBUILDER ON BUDGET AND PROGRAMME
Having nurtured a desire to construct his own dream home for the past 20 years, self-builder and project manager, Harjit Padda, is now nearing the stage of achieving a fully weatherproof envelope.
Harjit took the prudent step of installing West Fraser's CaberDek across the upper floor level, knowing the board product can resist exposure to the elements until the roof is tiled while also shrugging off plaster or paint spills as the fit-out progresses.
Harjit acquired the Berkshire site some four years ago and opted to replace the
existing bungalow with a high-performance two-storey, four-bedroom dwelling incorporating a variety of modern building solutions. Harjit laid 22mm CaberDek P5 panels across the timber beams to create a strong, resilient platform for work to proceed.

PART O, A-OK
Time’s up. The end of the one-year transition period, which allowed works to be built to previous regulations if started within 12 months of submitting a building notice before 15 June 2022, is nigh. So, if you haven't already, it's time to get your compliance in order.
Designed to tackle overheating, the Building Regulations Approved Document
Part O became the first of its kind when it was introduced in the summer. It seeks to ensure that the design and construction of new residential buildings limit unwanted solar gain in summer and provide adequate means to remove heat from the indoor environment.
By using a tinted coating on the exterior of the glass to reflect heat away from the interior, solar glass creates ambient indoor temperatures. It’s even possible to fit solar glass that reflects twice as much heat as standard glass: TuffX has achieved this through a unique new coating specifically developed for a new rooflight in its popular Infinity range. And unlike most solar glass it’s untinted, so achieves maximum light transmission too.
“As a leading supplier of rooflights, we’ve always known no one wants an uncomfortable, unusable space for any part of the year, no matter how light and bright and welcoming it might look,” said TuffX’s Commercial Director Paul Higgins.
And it's not just about overheating in summer. “Come winter, our new rooflight’s untinted glass lets in maximum light, but it also has a U-value of 1.0 – exceeding current Building Regulation requirements and making it the UK’s most energy efficient rooflight all year round.
Because the industry knows it can expect more changes aimed at improving the energy efficiency of buildings soon, with the Government’s Future Homes and Building Standards due to come into force in 2025, just two short years away.

HOUSEBUILDER MOVES INTO MODERN NEW OFFICE FOLLOWING £250,000 RENOVATION
Staff at an expanding home builder have moved into a new £250,000 office as the company continues its rapid growth.
Genesis Homes has invested significantly in creating a bespoke office base for its staff through the major renovation of a 6,000 square foot building on Penrith’s Gilwilly Industrial Estate, providing a more comfortable, spacious and modern office space for its growing number of employees.
The company has expanded considerably since being founded in 2017 and now employs more than 60 people.
Chief Executive Nicky Gordon said: “As Genesis Homes continues to grow, it became apparent to us that we needed a larger office space to make sure that everybody who comes into the office feels comfortable as they step through the doors.
“We made the decision to carry out the renovation of an adjacent building which would allow us to tailor the environment to our working needs, and provide a space which is extremely modern and crisp.
“Watching the renovation progress from our previous office windows over the months has only added to the excitement of the move, and our staff are really enjoying being in their new surroundings.
“For us, creating a purpose-built new office is not just an investment in infrastructure, it is an investment in our people and our business as a whole as we strive towards meeting our ambitions for further growth.”
The new, two-storey Genesis Homes HQ provides extra working space for employees to operate in. In addition, the building features ample meeting rooms and social spaces.
For Nicky, the creation of the new space represents the rapid progress the company has made over the years and also prepares the ground for further significant growth.
He said: “The journey Genesis Homes has been on since we formed the company in 2017 has been an incredible one and we are extremely proud with all we have achieved to date, particularly as we have had to weather some extremely turbulent years.
“But the hard work and expertise of the staff meant we were able to plan to overcome all obstacles and we want to reward the efforts of our employees along the way. I see this spacious, modern and high-tech new office as a way of
company has expanded considerably since being founded in 2017 and now employs more than 60 people."
showing our gratitude to the staff for their dedication and commitment.
“Genesis Homes has big ambitions to double in size in terms of properties built per annum by 2028, and to achieve this target we will need to add to our team and the larger office space allows us to accommodate this growth comfortably.”
Genesis Homes currently has properties for sale across Cumbria in Lazonby, Calthwaite, Rheda North Park, Penrith, Stainburn and Kendal, and in Halton, Lancashire.

MAKING ROOM FOR NEW EASY-TOINSTALL GLAZING SOLUTIONS WITH CRL LAURENCE AT FIT SHOW 2023
CRL heads to Birmingham’s NEC for FIT Show 2023 armed with a raft of new glazing hardware systems and solutions that will make Stand S21 a stop-off not to be missed.
Following the huge popularity of its Glass Rooms since launch, the company will preview new versions of its structure that weather-proof the garden. Offering even more flexibility in installation and design than the original modular version, these latest freestanding additions include one with a glass roof and a version with a motorised louvered roof, which doesn’t require a ceiling awning. With integrated drainage a choice of four RAL colours with others available on request, and options now including fixed glass panels, sliding doors, vertical blinds, heating and lighting, CRL Glass Rooms in 2023 are a flexible all-weather solution.
Other highlights of the CRL stand at the FIT Show will include its Paris (pictured) and Juliette balconies, which are increasingly being specified for new buildings and added to existing dwellings, for practical and decorative purposes. A particularly popular option on buildings where space is at a premium, the latest systems from CRL make light work of installation and maintenance while tested to BS6180:2011 to prioritise safety.
Installation demonstrations will also take place throughout the show, with visitors able to see how innovative systems such as CRL’s brand-new POSIone is to fit.
Installed from the safe side with no requirement for scaffolding, the system is fixed through the base to a substrate and is adjustable to 20mm in both directions. Innovative screw-clamp technology locks the glass panels into position effortlessly, enabling the minimal, frameless glass windbreaks to be used in exposed locations on balconies and decking.

Steel windows and screens deliver style to enhance interior decor
Strong yet comparatively slim steel frame sections are well recognised amongst architects for offering excellent light transmission, while the slender sightlines are also ideal for allowing windows to “bring the outdoors in.” However, contemporary systems available from members of the Steel Window Association (SWA) can also play a pivotal role in influencing interior fitouts.
The unexpected property boom from the pandemic included people adding extensions or improving their homes and saw SWA members responding to high demand for both classic and contemporary steel windows, doors and interior screens. In fact, the latter has proved ideal for creating home offices or sub-dividing living spaces without significantly cutting light reaching deep plan areas; while introducing an aesthetic often described as industrial but also sophisticated.

TRADELINK TRANSFORMS INTERIOR LAYOUTS WITH ALUSPACE
Already well respected across the UK window industry for its high levels of service, product quality and value for money, Tradelink has further enhanced its offer to customers through the introduction of a new range of interior screening solutions: styled to complement the elegant slim lines of its widely specified window and door offerings.
Suitable for both residential and commercial applications, the AluSpace Internal Screening System has been developed to create a light and spacious ambience within interior settings. The versatile products are also viewed as being a solution for dividing and delineating various shapes and sizes of room, thanks to the wide variety of configurations available. These include hinged single and double doors, as well as pivot and sliding doors to install within the fixed glazed screen.
Further options include visible hinges or concealed pivot or sliding mechanisms, enabling the systems to be completely tailored to meet virtually any design style. The frames are
single glazed, normally with toughened glass, and can be supplied with a choice of 6, 8 or 18mm thicknesses: providing acoustic attenuation as well as a high degree of thermal isolation and excellent light transmission.
For further design flexibility, there is also a wide range of accessories including a choice of classic, modern and industrial handles; all of which may be supplied in a matched, contrasting or complementary colour to the screen and doors.
Stuart Judge, MD for Tradelink, reflected: “The launch of AluSpace is very much in step with current trends for customers improving their properties, including wanting to create home offices or sub-dividing existing floorplans to make better use of available space. The made-to-measure screens and door options are available on a three to four week delivery.”

ENHANCE YOUR HOME WITH STRUCTURAL GLASS
Enhancing and transforming your home with bespoke structural glass creates a design statement that is not just stunningly beautiful but individual, timeless and functional.
Frameless structural glass specialists Ion Glass will take your design from concept to reality, however complex or challenging the brief. Each installation is entirely unique, working with home- owners, interior designers, architects and builders to create stunning and inspiring results.
Deceptively simple, a frameless glass installation is sleek, contemporary and minimal, whilst meeting every criteria for strength and structural integrity.
Ion Glass MD, Peter Hazeldean comments, ‘More and more of our discerning clients opt for fully frameless glass designs with, ideally, no visible fixings. Many of them also choose low-iron glass, for perfect clarity and a more opulent feel. It’s a very exciting choice in home design – we love to push the boundaries and explore new ways to incorporate glass into both older style and new-build properties. Whilst we can provide more traditional framed structural glass - and in some circumstances some minimal framework is essential –frameless glass is definitely more elegant.’
Take a look at the scope of Ion’s work and imagine how your home could be styled and transformed with glass.
IMPRESSIVE CURVES
Consider a sweep of glass balustrading to enhance a curved staircase, each individual glass panel perfectly aligned with the steps and blending seamlessly with the glass to the landing. This luxurious new build residence in Nigeria installed frameless glass to the double curves of the staircase for an impressive style statement that works perfectly with the cool, minimal appeal of marble flooring.
If you like an even more pared-down approach to stairs, you’ll love this elliptical floating staircase, created in metal with frameless glass panels perfectly aligned to the handforged treads. Each panel of glass is as individual as the owners, the finish a testament to their unique design style and Ion’s ability to fulfil this challenging brief. ‘Helical panels are notoriously difficult to create in glass,’ Peter commented, ‘but with the benefit of Ion’s computer aided measuring techniques we achieved an accurate and flawless result.’
A LIGHT TOUCH FOR STAIRS IN GLASS
With each glass tread finished in sand-blasted glass to create a non-slip surface and illuminated with LED lights for style and safety Ion Glass created a striking staircase, descending to an outside terrace in a villa on the Cote D’Azur. The client, who owns several properties in stunning locations around the world, was delighted!
‘Distance is not an issue for us,’ added Peter, ‘We make a comprehensive initial survey and site assessment to ensure the glass fits perfectly when it arrives at your home. Wherever you are, we understand our clients want minimal disruption when the glass is installed.’
SHOWERS, SPAS AND SAUNAS
Glass is the obvious choice for showers but don’t limit yourself when it comes to designing your leisure area. Think over-sized mirrors, reflecting your space and maximising the light or consider studio-style walls of bespoke mirrored glass.
Separate different areas of your leisure environment with floor to ceiling glass screens fitted with fully frameless doors and discreet fittings for optimum style and minimal visual impact. Introducing a glass wall to your sauna will change the vibe of the space to one that is more open and inclusive whilst efficiently retaining heat.
Take glass one step further and use it in swimming pools for the ultimate in luxurious leisure. ‘Glass panels around your pool make for a unique swimming experience,’ says Peter Hazeldean. ‘We can install full depth panels so you can swim underwater with full vision, especially rewarding if you have a pool with a view!’
A GLASS WELCOME
A glass porch can be taken to design extremes, limited only by your imagination! The owner of this country home barn conversion wanted a statement entrance created entirely from glass, in a break from the more traditional ‘oak and glass’ porch construction of many heritage updates.
He stated, ‘I wanted the light and airy feel that only glass can provide, using glass throughout the conversion, including frameless balustrades to the mezzanine floor and an internal bridge. We approached a number of suppliers but Ion
Glass was the only company who were confident they could achieve the result I was hoping for, especially with regard to the porch.’
Welcoming guests to this stunning country property has taken on a new dimension!
Ion Glass have an experienced team of experts who will be delighted to discuss how they can transform your home with structural glass. Consider glass linkways, internal and external balustrades, rooflights, floor panels or glass bridges.
Every Ion Glass project is as individual as their clients.
"Deceptively simple, a frameless glass installation is sleek, contemporary and minimal, whilst meeting every criteria for strength and structural integrity."
CARPET RECYCLING UK: STRENGTHENED WITH 80% SUPPORT FROM CARPET AND TEXTILE FLOORING SECTOR
Adnan continues: “New homes flooring contractors, for example, are already segregating carpet and textile flooring waste for reuse and recycling. They recognise the savings in resources and costs associated that they have achieved and the benefit of their connection with us when tendering for new work.”
David Heafey is Finance Director of CRUK member Saint Flooring, who implemented waste material recycling throughout the company’s nationwide sites in 2019. He says that membership of Carpet Recycling UK is contributing to their sustainability goals and helping to achieve annual savings of up to £170,000 a year on disposal costs by reusing and recycling their waste materials, including carpets.
Following significant growth in its membership network, Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) is seeking more engagement from the construction, facilities management and flooring sectors to act to reduce textile flooring waste such as commercial broadloom carpet, carpet tiles and underlay.
The not-for-profit association reports that working with 80% of the UK’s carpet and textile flooring manufacturers and distributors puts it in a stronger position to represent the sector when it comes to discussions on favourable Government policy outcomes.
Support from CRUK’s 17 core members comes from Balsan, Betap, Brintons Carpets, Condor Group, Cormar Carpets, ege Carpets, Furlong Flooring, Gradus, Headlam Group, IVC Commercial, Likewise Floors, Milliken, Modulyss, Rawson Carpet Solutions, Shaw, Tarkett and Victoria Group. They are taking voluntary producer responsibility for the products they place on the market and striving to reduce waste in production as well as for their customers, helping to create cost savings.
Commenting on their focus for 2023, Adnan Zeb-Khan, CRUK Scheme Manager says: “In our 15th year, the 80% increase in industry support adds weight to our representation for the sector, recognising the achievements of our members and wider network, as we continue to help the sector to develop sustainably.
“Moving forward, companies will need to demonstrate reductions in use of new resources, design products with recycling in mind, include methods of identification of material make up and consideration of reverse logistics for take-back and recycling outcomes. Our members are making great strides ahead with many developing products with recycling in mind, from single polymer ranges, to ranges made with recycled content.”
For the construction sector, developers and facilities companies interested in sustainable solutions to flooring waste, CRUK offers an extensive network of specialists handling surplus and used textile flooring waste, such as carpet tiles, carpet rolls and clean installation offcuts.
“Carpet Recycling UK supported us throughout and our membership helped us to find partners to recycle the carpet. Without being a member, I do not think we would have had this success.”
CRUK’s 136-strong membership includes specialist reuse and recycling members repurposing surplus flooring for reuse and recycling in feasible outlets or used as an alternative fuel source. Adnan observes: “Our ultimate aim is to move carpet and textile flooring up the waste hierarchy and create circularity to maximise the use of these resources. Obviously, preventing this material becoming a waste by reusing flooring in new settings is the best outcome for unwanted and surplus material. This helps to provide affordable flooring for social housing tenants and low-cost flooring for property developers. That’s why we’re inviting companies to discuss their projects with us.”
Key to CRUK’s work is collecting accurate data on the volume of carpet and textile flooring placed on the market together with tonnages for waste material which is being diverted from landfill – it is estimated that of the 470,000 tonnes arising in 2020, 70% was diverted from landfill. The latest figures due back from the 2021 tonnage survey will be presented at CRUK’s annual conference on June 21-22 for which early registration is advised.
“Given the heightened interest in legislation issues, developments and challenges surrounding the treatment of textile flooring related wastes, we’re expecting high demand for our conference,” adds Adnan. “In just 15 years, we have come a long way in developing solutions for carpet and textile waste that preserve valuable resources and reduce costs for the supply chain.
“We want to reach more companies who would like to find sustainable solutions for their waste carpet and textile flooring material that help to reduce the impact this waste stream has on the environment. Thanks to our rapidly growing network, we can help you.”

LAKE DISTRICT SETS THE SCENE FOR CERAMIQUE INTERNATIONALE’S LATEST TILE RANGE
Ceramique Internationale’s new Cutstone tile collection delivers a backdrop as dramatic as the ancient Lakeland stone it is inspired by.
Burlington stone, which has been quarried from the heart of the Lake District for more than 400 years, has informed the tone and texture of these commanding 600mm x 1200mm porcelain wall and floor tiles.
Offered in four neutral shades - graphite, smoke, sand and white – Cutstone tiles are characterised by indiscriminate white veining on a matt finish. Distinctive tone changes reflect their natural origins and no two tiles are alike.
Peter Vann, Managing Director of Ceramique Internationale, said: “The visually compelling Cutstone range, from Spanish manufacturer Baldocer, will provide a distinguished backdrop to any space.
“Their understated tones reflect the subtle beauty of the Lake District, while their very large size and unique finish are sure to make a matchless statement on walls and floors.”

DRU REPORTS EXCELLENT GROWTH FROM ITS EXPANDING DIK GEURTS WOOD STOVE RANGE
Established in the Netherlands in 1981, Dik Geurts stoves and fires are now produced by DRU, one of Europe’s leading fireplace companies.
Soaring energy prices have provided a welcome boost to wood stove sales. Consumers are looking for cheaper and greener sources of home heating that can be supplied and installed rapidly to alleviate punitive home heating bills.
INCREASED PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION
This market uplift has led to DRU increasing production and distribution of its Dik Geurts Ivar selection of classic and contemporary stoves, which align with British and European emissions and efficiency standards. They are a popular choice to replace older, inefficient stoves or open fires.
The Dik Geurts Ivar series also includes the Aste, Soren and Modivar models. These stoves are based on classic designs, making them ideal for traditional or modern homes. They are easily installed into Class 1 chimneys, with their dark anthracite colour finishes blending perfectly with any style of décor.
A+ ENERGY LABELS AND HIGH EFFICIENCY
Each model in the range has an A+ energy label, with an efficiency rating of over 80%. And for added air quality, there are external air and room-sealed options available.
All stoves in the range are Ecodesign ready, so they comply with European standards for low emissions and clean burning. In addition, they have HETAS, DEFRA and clearSkies approvals.
FREESTANDING AND WATER HEATING OPTIONS
For homes with no chimney, customers can choose from a range of freestanding models, which are available in a selection of sizes and capacities with built-in wood storage.
In addition, The Ivar 10 H2O Store model is an Ecodesign ‘boiler stove’ with a substantial 4.7 kW room heating output and 5.5 kW of water heating power. It provides supplementary water heating for radiators, showers and general domestic hot water.
Commenting on the success of the Dik Geurts range, DRU UK general manager Niall Deiraniya said:
“The Dik Geurts Ivar series and its associated models are among the best performing and best value wood stoves in Europe. That is why we are committed to increasing their production and distribution throughout the UK.
“In return, we offer high profitability, regular stocks, prompt deliveries, nationwide technical and marketing support, friendly customer service and expert account management.”

Highlights at Clerkenwell Design Week 2023: 23 – 25 May 2023
Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW), now in its 12th edition, will return to EC1 London between 23 – 25 May 2023. Taking place across the whole of Clerkenwell, a neighbourhood renowned for its high concentration of architects and designers, the festival is set to offer its biggest programme yet – featuring more than 600 events and, for the first time, merging with its sister show, Design London.
CDW 2023 sees a total of 12 exhibition venues across Clerkenwell including: Design Fields, Contract, Light, Project, Elements, British Collection, Detail, Platform, Ceramics of Italy, Old Sessions House (the festival hub), and two new additions – Catapult and The Garden. While these unique venues will present over 300 design brands and emerging talent covering furniture, kitchens and bathrooms, materials and surfaces, textiles, decorative accessories, and lighting, an extensive network of more than 130 local showroom partners will host product launches, workshops and talks over the three days of the festival.
ARCHITECTURE GOES INFLATABLE
Headlining this year’s CDW Presents programme is a specially commissioned installation by British artist, Steve Messam – who exhibits internationally and is well known for his large-scale, inflatable artwork reimagining our everyday surroundings. At the festival, the County Durham-based artist will bring his distinctive public art – sponsored by 3D design software company, SketchUp – to St John’s Gate of the Order of St John. This site-specific piece, titled Gateway and measuring 6m (height) by 15.5m (length), will feature 27 giant spikes hand-sewn in a striking blue textile. It forms part of Messam’s ongoing art series taking over historic architectural sites – and inviting the public to examine their environment in a new light through its deliberately ambiguous shape and size.
“Gateway offers a dynamic and unforgettable sensory experience,” says Messam. “While the spikes tower above the public as they pass through the gate, the bespoke piece traces the internal space between the arches before bursting out beyond the bounds of the building.”
In addition to Gateway, visitors will have the opportunity to experience Messam’s artistic treatment of the iconic telephone boxes – sponsored by Budvar. K6, originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott for the coronation of George V in 1935, is one of the most recognised telephone boxes; while K2 – also designed by Scott in 1924 – was the first national telephone box, many of which were initially installed in Clerkenwell. Spread over three locations, the former is located on Cowcross Street, and the latter can be found on Clerkenwell Road as well as outside St James’s Church.
SUSTAINABILITY IS THE NORM
Creating a more sustainable way of living – from biodiversity to reduce-reuse-recycle – remains a key subject matter for many design manufacturers and makers. Using modern technology and the latest research, many explore and propose new ways to challenge the status quo while tackling these industry-wide issues with a global outlook.
As part of the CDW Presents series, SYMBIOCENE LIVING: Mycelium Building Block is an interpretive, artistic mycelium installation that encourages the public to envision and engage with fungi architecture. While the modular feature is made of mycelium blocks with a 3D printed timber shell, the blocks – each similar in size to a watermelon – will be arranged to create a different formation incorporating abstract seating and towers on each day of the festival.
Set to be situated outside Clerkenwell & Social on St John’s Square, this one-off installation is designed by East London-based PLP Architecture – which has produced some of the world’s greenest and most intelligent designs through a profound commitment to social, economic and environmental values.
Over at Old Sessions House, Heiter X – a sustainable food design and experience studio founded by Estonia-based
Helis Heiter – will launch its first collection of sculptural tableware in collaboration with Krohwin. Crafted using traditional building techniques and innovative 3D clay printing technology, the Mound Collection is made from raw clay and natural carnauba wax – as well as repurposed food industry waste including buckwheat and hemp shells. The collection symbolises the mounds of food wasted every day, serving as a visual reminder of the need for more conscious consumption and waste reduction.
The new tableware will be shown alongside Terra Firma, an edible tablescape aimed to spark conversation and inspire change in the way we think about and interact with food.

Launched in 2022, Kent-based Recork (Project) specialises in stylish cork flooring made from 85% natural cork, harvested from trees grown in well-managed cork oak Montado. According to the eco-conscious company, it is the only one on the market that takes raw material from the Portuguese oak forests and turns production waste used for stoppers – as well as cork from early harvests – into flooring planks. Recork’s stand at CDW will feature its latest rug collection – made entirely from sustainably sourced cork, wool and cotton – in partnership with Portuguese brand Sugo Cork Rugs.

• Parkside (Showroom) – Its newly launched Sequel Principle will be a key highlight – a recycled composite tile consisting of over 91% recycled content; in particular, unwanted materials from the ceramic and glass industry locally sourced in Spain; and
Vepa (Showroom) – The sustainable furniture manufacturer from the Netherlands will open its new showroom and sustainability education centre at 45 Gee Street during CDW, and show the full colour range of its Felt seating –made from PET plastic bottles – for the first time in the UK.
MODERN CRAFT PERSEVERES
Our enduring love for the craft as seen in recent years shows no signs of slowing down. The UK continues to lead the way in championing the best talent and finest craftsmanship –and visitors to this year’s CDW will not be disappointed by the eclectic mix of independent makers and businesses this country has to offer.
Greek-born, London-based furniture designer and sculptor Kostas Synodis (Platform) will join the festival for the first time. Blending art and design with his signature pared-down aesthetic, the newcomer will exhibit a new foldable low deckchair. Made from three pieces of veneer plywood cut out of the same panels to minimise material use, Notch is inspired by an African palaver chair but reimagined in a more contemporary approach. It can be folded into a 24-mm thick board when not in use.
Recork x Sugo Cork RugsNow in its 12th year, Curiousa (Light) is renowned for its bespoke hand-blown glass lighting made in its Derbyshirebased old mill studio. At CDW, the brand will present its new Wave chandelier – designed by its founder Esther Patterson – featuring five hand-formed glass vessels threaded onto beams of light. Including horizontal Ripple Beams and vertical Crest and Cascade pendants, the pieces intersect with each other creating a feeling of effortless interplay and suspension.
Run by husband and wife, Jamie Hoyle and Katherine Mathew, Koda (British Collection) designs and makes bespoke furniture – by hand – in its studio and workshop in Yorkshire. The 10-year-old business will bring its ergonomic height-adjustable walnut desk – an elegant reimagination of a traditional writing desk – as well as its walnut media unit to the festival this May.
Also led by a husband-and-wife duo, Joel and Helena Haran, Cornwall-based Studio Haran (Light) specialises in lighting and furniture with sustainability at its core. Its founders work closely with a team of local skilled craftspeople to produce slip-cast ceramics and woodwork; some of which – including the Dawn pendant and wall light – will be on show at CDW.
Fibre artist Livi Hecht of London-based Knot My Name will display her contemporary artwork at Platform. Using ecofriendly materials, Hecht produces handmade macramé products and made-to-order pieces. Another one to watch at Platform is Timber Robot Studio – set up by Philip Gay in 2022. A former propmaker from the film industry, Gay retrained in fine woodwork in 2021 before starting his furniture and homeware business. At CDW, he will showcase his latest handmade designs – including an Art Decoinspired chest made from solid ash and rippled ash veneer.
Meanwhile, over at Detail, interior architects and founders of Ziba Homes, Mitali Bansal and Ria Chhabra, will launch three new pieces of furniture – an exquisite collection of patterns curated using a wide range of materials and handcrafted techniques. One of them is the Emerald Envy malachite console combined with ash wood and wicker – which will be on show alongside a coordinating set of home accessories. Also at Detail is Holmes Bespoke – founded by Laylah Holmes – which will debut its new range of handcrafted rugs and runners exclusively at CDW.

Today’s high-performance composite deck boards, like those from Trex®, are warrantied to last for 25 years or longer. But what about the substructure material underneath? If the posts and beams that support the deck are made of wood, they are likely to deteriorate long before the decking warranty elapses.
Now, there is a simple and cost-effective solution to combatting the damaging effects of both Mother Nature and Father Time. Designed specifically for use on decks, Trex® Protect™ Joist and Beam Tape protects wooden joinery from moisture that can lead to rot and the loosening of deck fasteners.
This self-adhesive, butyl-based tape effectively shields the tops of joists, rim joists, ledger boards and beams from moisture penetration that can cause wood to decay and deteriorate. It also seals deck fasteners and helps deck screws to hold longer and stronger by preventing moisture from seeping into screw holes. Additionally, Trex Protect defends against splitting that can result from seasonal freezing and thawing.

Available in widths for use on wooden joists and beams, Trex Protect works on horizontal and vertical surfaces and is applied as a “cap” (vs. wrapping), which allows the wood to breathe. The peel-and-stick application is simple and requires almost no trimming. Furthermore, Trex Protect won’t bleed, dry out as quickly, or curl up and hold water like many asphalt-based tapes, and it is backed by an industry-leading 25-year warranty.

DAVAL FURNITURE SHARE 2023 BEDROOM TRENDS
Award-winning British designer and manufacturer of quality fitted furniture, Daval, predicts a bumper year for bedrooms as homeowners put indulgence and multifunctional flexibility at the top of their 2023-4 wish lists…
Simon Bodsworth, Managing Director at Daval says, “As we look to renovation season this spring, we predict luxury dressing rooms and versatile hybrid home offices will be in demand this year to deliver a more flexible and luxurious lifestyle experience. Creating beautiful spaces for rest, relaxation, studying, hobbies and working remotely will be fundamental to enhancing quality of life and wellbeing in 2023. In fact, research from the Mayo Clinic confirms organising your space can enhance your mental health, so investing in bespoke storage solutions is beneficial for your mind as well as your home.” As the bedroom market develops and expands to reflect an increasing need for selfcare and wellness, the Daval team is pleased to offer its insights on the latest trends.
FLOOR - TO - CEILING FLAIR: Tall units which maximise storage potential will be in demand as the way to maximise every inch of space in the 2023 bedroom. Installing wardrobes and cupboards which extend up to the ceiling will ensure the perfect fit and bring a streamlined feel to the bedroom. Must-have textures like linen and metallic
effects will cater to a desire for luxurious, feelgood finishes as homeowners yearn for tactile effects to match a calming aesthetic. In addition, highlighting decorative accessories with integrated display shelving is the latest way to add a personal touch in keeping with a harmonious linear look.
DELUXE DRESSING ISLANDS: New deluxe central storage island units will be top of the charts in 2023, making getting ready even easier. Selecting eyewear, watches and jewellery to enhance your outfits will be a breeze thanks to a range of storage solutions such as specially designed leather trays. Zoned storage is big news this year, so only will you be able to see your favourite items at a glance, you’ll also be freeing up valuable space at the dressing table for your preferred grooming tools and cosmetics, helping to streamlining your daily beauty ritual.
SIZE MATTERS: Furniture which is precisely tailored to your needs will be at the heart of a calm and organized dressing area and bedroom in 2023, with a range of drawer sizes varying from slimline to deep to take care of non-
hanging items. In fact, drawer storage is being reinvented in state-of-the-art island units as well as inside traditional wardrobes making it simpler than ever to manage clothes and travel goods as well as storing essentials like lingerie and nightwear.
SUSTAINABLE CHOICES: Furniture which is ethically made and environmentally friendly will be in demand this year reflecting the global movement to use resources more efficiently and creatively. With this in mind, custom British made fitted furniture which comes from renewable sources is an on-trend choice to reduce carbon footprint whilst catering to the unique nature of your home and lifestyle, helping you to maintain and protect your clothes and muchloved accessories. The latest smoked glass shelving, sturdy pull-out, soft-close drawers for shoes, pull down hanging rails, integrated mirrors and industrial inspired lighting options will personalise your space as well as promoting better organisation. It’s a real win-win for your wardrobe!
DEEP & RICH COLOURS: Navy blue bedrooms and home offices will be in vogue with year as Google confirms a 180% rise in searches for this relaxing, gender-neutral hue. This go-to calming colour is the perfect partner for indemand wood details and luxurious metallic mineral effects which will elevate and transform fitted furniture this year.
HYBRID HERO SOLUTIONS: With hybrid working patterns here to stay in the UK, 2023 will see soaring demand for customised home office solutions. A mixture of open and closed storage will be in demand to cater for hanging files, office stationery, lever arch folders and media devices.
For the ultimate in ease and practicality, premium home office suites will have hanging storage for workwear so workers can grab a jacket for a polished look ahead of video conferences and Zoom meetings. As flexibility will be key to professional and family life in 2023, converting a spare bedroom into a home office will be increasingly popular with versatile furniture which can be flipped as required. Selecting desks that can double as dressing tables and choosing dual zone cabinetry to accommodate office supplies or your guests’ belongings will make all the difference in a functional and comfortable multi-purpose room.

SMALL SPACES - HOW TO BEST UTILISE THE SPACE IN YOUR HOME
Good things come in small packages, and the same can be said for your home. With careful planning and unique design features, compact kitchens, bootrooms and bedrooms can be transformed into stylish, yet functional, spaces. Whether you are looking to use every nook of storage space or to bring a new lease of life through texture, below, Will Lyne, Lead Designer and Co-owner of Christopher Peters Kitchens & Interiors, shares his top three ways you can best utilise your space using innovative design concepts.
1. ALL PLACES GREAT AND SMALL
Small practical spaces can be just as efficient - and elegant - as rooms on a grander scale. In your culinary space, think about creating units that combine high-level and lowlevel storage, with integrated appliances in between. Hidden fridges and freezers can also create a contemporary look in the kitchen with your appliances sitting flush against the wall, freeing up pivotal space around counters, cupboards and islands.
For your bootroom, think about creating something that combines high-level storage, hooks, seating and low-level shoe storage. Designing a bespoke piece of furniture that will completely fill the space whilst also fulfilling your needs will ensure you are maximising the potential of your home.
2. IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS
When it comes to your colour palette, try to keep things simple. Less really can be more - sticking to one or two colours and choosing similar shades for the cabinets or furniture, walls and floors allows the whole room to feel coherent. To showcase your room and its beautiful features,
let in as much natural light as possible to give the room a bright and airy feel. When it comes to your choice of artificial lighting, add additional task lighting to illuminate desk space or countertops to save on visual space.
Consider your choice of furniture too – in the kitchen, backless stools can live under the work surfaces when not in use to save on space, and a handy bar cart in your dining area means you do not need to waste cabinet or table space on storing a tipple or two.
3. SAVE ON SPACE WITH SHELVING
If your bedroom does not have the necessary floorplan for a classic, walk-in wardrobe, consider investing in open-style shelving – a suitable place to store all manner of jewellery, sentimental heirlooms or other everyday items. Open shelving can also be used in other rooms – like studies – to save on workspace. These units can usually be brought in all manner of configurations, with tall, slim options working in smaller spaces.
In the kitchen, if you have always had your heart set on a pantry but you are not blessed with the space, a larder unit could be a great option for you. With room for glassware, crockery, jars, cans – and even coffee machines – as well as deep doors for smaller items, like herbs and spicesthese units can be built to your exacting specifications. At Christopher Peters, this is a service we often offer our clients, ensuring the storage solution truly does fulfil the need that they have for the space.

BRANDT DESIGN 2023 HOME INTERIOR TRENDS
Luxury kitchen and home interior design specialists, Brandt Design, forecast a new wave of creativity throughout the home in 2023 as bespoke furniture design is the standout trend in every living space.
Julia Steadman, Commercial Director at Brandt Design explains “Over the last ten years, the idea of a contemporary handleless kitchen was the norm when updating the home. But given its popularity, we are now finding that our customers feel this look is ‘overdone’, with the majority wanting to break away from this style of kitchen and instead, ensure their own sense of style and personal character. Current trends tell us that individuality is key when undertaking a new renovation project.”
FUN WITH FURNITURE: This year, contemporary slab doors will become a blank canvas in the kitchen, allowing you to inject personality through the colour, finish and even texture of the front surfaces. In-frame cabinetry will also prove worth in the modern home with different styles like shallow square raised and inset designs helping to add personality without being tied to a traditional kitchen scheme. As the idea of classic design continues to reshape
itself this year, taking a ‘mix and match’ approach to your fitted furniture throughout your home will be a growing trend. If your heart is set on a handleless kitchen go for it as it will present a clear design identity you wouldn’t find anywhere else.
If you prefer more traditionally styled interiors, then beauty is in the details in 2023. Decorative paneling, bold worksurfaces, hand painted elements and ornate lighting will all help to define your own sense of style while remaining adaptable to your everyday life. There really are no limits to what can be achieved, as original and unique elements will be highly desirable in the best homes. Why not consider integrated bench seating, custom wine storage, a walk-in larder, and even a personalised overmantel inscribed with your family name as these elements will not only be ontrend but also make your home truly distinctive?
FINISHING TOUCHES: Adding flair and personality through surfaces will be a massive trend in 2023. Every room in the home offers you a range of surfaces that can be tailored to your own personal style with worktops, splashbacks, flooring and even soft furnishings opening the door for you to customise your living space. Take it to the next level by blending or contrasting a variety of materials, colours and finishes as this will enhance the bespoke elements in your interiors and show you are ahead of the design curve. Think covetable concrete surfaces, brick walls, trim details in metal and leather, along with opposing textures that can influence your mood, and perception of light and space.
Statement taps, appliances and handles will be a fantastic resource in the kitchen in 2023 with chrome, stainless steel and white no longer the go-to options as the market now offers a variety of finishes and colours that will help define a kitchen’s personal style. Coloured designs will be a front runner in brassware, with special PVD coatings ensuring kitchen taps can adopt a made-to-last texture and colour by having a high resistance to external factors like scratches and cleaning products. Smart black editions will be all the rage in cooking too, with the latest built-in ovens taking their inspiration from sleek induction hobs, extraction units and smaller appliances like your coffee machine and toaster. We will also be seeing a huge rise in the use of bespoke handles to give furniture throughout the home a completely unique look this year available in a limitless range of special finishes.
FAMILY - FIRST DESIGN: There is no doubt that 2023 will be a year of ‘designed for you’ ergonomic layouts, which will be tailored precisely to how your household uses the space and will ensure a truly personal living experience. Hot trends will include breakfast bars which can become office stations to accommodate home working a few days as week as well as meeting the need for casual dining or entertaining friends and family. Other must-haves for luxurious kitchen living will be all-purpose island units complete with additional storage, seating and dining space, downdraft cooktop and under cabinet appliances like a practical wine fridge or an extra sink for food prep. Discreet home bars will be key to entertaining and customised boot rooms and utility areas will be very popular busy families to maintain privacy and separate task zones.
Dedicated storage space for provisions will be increasingly sought after in 2023 homes to support bulk buying and online grocery deliveries. Deluxe pantries and walk-in larders off the main kitchen living area will be in demand with the most attractive offerings boasting integrated lighting, deep drawer storage, durable, easy-clean quartz surfaces and power points so blenders and coffee makers are always ready for action. A mixture of open and closed storage will be coming through so that you can keep your favourite foodstuffs within easy reach and in date order, to prevent waste and assist with menu planning.
UPSCALE UPSTAIRS: Expect the passion for personalization to extend to the first floor this year as bespoke dressing rooms will be at the top of the most wanted list. The most fashionable homes will have bedroom islands and designed-in storage for accessories along with
generous wardrobe space off the master suite. Look out for graphic marble-effect surfaces and soothing painted finishes to bring the very best of boutique-inspired styling to the forever home in 2023.

ELEGANT AND FUNCTIONAL PERGOLAS
Pergolas are so much more than a garden structure. There are lots of considerations to make before you decide which model and features to purchase. It is recommended that you explore the finishes, configurations, and build materials to ensure that you select a structure that is durable, comfortable and looks amazing year after year.
There are suppliers, such as Babilonia, who only work with the best materials and provide robust structures with various configuration options, allowing you to source a unique model that is custom built for your exact needs. Your supplier may also offer complementary products such as an outdoor kitchen, fire pit, bar and accessories which together greatly enhance the outdoor living experience.
Elegant pergolas can easily be designed so that all their transmission systems are hidden inside the structure, creating a pleasant space. These systems include a range of comfort options such as infrared heating systems, waterproof audio systems, and perimeter lighting that uses low-consumption RGB and white light LED spotlights.
Bluetooth systems allow you to control your pergola from an app on your phone and a Wi-Fi switchboard makes it easy to control remotely so you don’t need to worry if you forget to switch something off after you leave your home.
Automatic rain, wind and snow sensors with adjustable heavy-duty rotating louvres can close automatically or via the app providing a breathable and waterproof cover. Water channeling ensures all water collected on the surface is channeled to the drainage point through the columns.
Various styles and dimensions are available. It is even possible to specially make irregular shapes that adapt to any
space. You can create a timeless design in any RAL colour with a textured or matte finish. There are a multitude of enclosure options to isolate your pergola from the outside including sliding glass doors and fixed panels. You can also insulate your pergola with canvas screens in various colors and materials with a retractable motor to cover the pergola automatically from your smartphone. If you want to create a structure that looks completely homogeneous and without visible screws, assemblies can be carried out on the inside of the structure. Be mindful to look for robust materials in the structure and reinforced pillars that provide durability.
Not only can you create a stunning, comfortable structure, it is possible to create a sustainable space. The installation of transparent photovoltaic panels can produce a slight shade and generate clean energy.
Buying your pergola from an outdoor living specialist such as Babilonia can help you navigate the many options available, also the additional products they offer which make outdoor living such a joy.

LANDSCAPE LIGHTING
ILLUMINATING DIFFERENT EXTERIORS WITH DETAIL LIGHTING
Outdoor lighting requires careful consideration and planning – there is an art to it and getting it right is much harder than it looks. It is particularly tricky to master as it not only must be balanced, planned and installed correctly, it also has to contend with the elements and changing weather. With the added benefit of enhancing the aesthetics and value of a property, outdoor lighting also increases security.
From courtyards and patios to front entrances and hedgerows, the lighting for each external area should be planned independently, much like within the home, in order to illuminate exteriors to their full potential. Experts in LED lighting solutions, Detail Lighting offers beautiful, functional lighting solutions to help deliver extraordinary outdoor schemes.
When it comes to lighting greenery, choose to highlight feature trees and shrubs instead of using a blanket of light, this will add drama and help connect different zones. Light temperature is also a key element to consider – for external lighting, harsh, bright cold lighting can be too hard on the eyes and so it is recommended to use a warm white LED light for outdoor spaces, something within a colour temperature of 2700K – 3000K. Overall, it is better to have more points of low-power lighting rather than high power glaring lights to achieve a more calming and peaceful setting.
Outdoor lighting can be effective at creating something from nothing – what during the day might be a wall, or a stairway, can become a dramatic feature at night with clever lighting. Wash walls with wide beams of light from below or above, or position lighting close to surfaces to accentuate
natural textures and shadows to create spaces that are extensions of the home.
Thanks to advances in technology, modern LED lighting can offer external solutions to create beautifully architectural outdoor spaces. Established in 2000, Detail Lighting offers beautiful, functional lighting design that separates projects

HOW SCHELLEVIS ARE CHANGING THE “DIRTY” REPUTATION OF CONCRETE
Concrete is often seen as a material which is one of the largest contributors to climate change, but there great changes underway in the industry. Schellevis® has been committed to reducing the environmental impact of our products and production processes for many years. Despite the negative reputation that concrete has when it comes to sustainability, we believe that with the right practices and approach, it can be a sustainable material choice.
Our focus is on using natural materials, recycling and reducing emissions from transportation and production. We believe that promoting the use of green spaces and minimising hard landscaping can contribute to sustainability. We love to see outdoor spaces roughly 30% hard landscaping and the rest planted with lush greenery, which will ensure future generations can enjoy healthy outdoor spaces.
The Schellevis® production facility uses expertly-designed machines, with minimal energy requirements and low wastage. Our internal transport largely consists of electrical forklifts and bicycles (we are a Dutch company after all!).
At present, all of our products contain a minimum of 30% recycled concrete. We don’t use any energy sources to cure our products, as they are dried naturally. Schellevis® products are 100% recyclable and any products that do not pass our strict quality control are recycled into aggregate components, for new Schellevis® to be produced. Our sand and gravel is delivered by boat, which is equivalent to 40 deliveries by lorry. We work with suppliers located close to our production facility to reduce transport emissions further.
We take our commitment to sustainability seriously, and our efforts are independently assessed and certified by third-parties. We have been awarded an NL Greenlabel certification since 2016 and have been certified by the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) since 2022. As one of
the first paving manufacturers to achieve CSC certification, we are proud of our commitment to sustainability.
But we are not stopping there. Our focus on sustainability is an ongoing process and we are continually testing and innovating to improve the composition and production of our products, without compromising on quality. For example, we are exploring alternative components to cement to further minimise our impact on nature. We believe that by continuing to prioritise sustainability, we can help create a healthier and more sustainable future for our planet.

THE ADJUSTABLE ONE-SIDE-FIT FROM PURE VISTA
Pure Vista have announced the release of their adjustable one-side-fit balustrade profile, POSIone.
Having been available for large projects since the start of 2023, POSIone is now installed on buildings throughout the UK.
The system has been completely fire tested to EN 13501-1 and reaches the A2, S1, D0, rating with 23mm PyroGuard Glass. This result means that POSIone can be installed on projects over 11-meters high.
Pure Vista worked with Pyroguard to test both the glass and balustrade in conjunction. Ensuring that the system surpasses the strict requirements laid out by the government. Meaning we tested the channel alongside all the internal components. It was important for us to be able to provide the safest fire-rated system available.
The system benefits from our patented one-side-fit slider kit whilst continuing to use our screw-clamp technology, the glass can tilt 20mm each way at 1100mm high. The glass is easily manoeuvred to its desired position, the slider holds the position and the screw-clamp locks everything in place. This means that when fitting the channel to an uneven surface, the angle of the channel can be countered by the adjustment of the glass. POSIone has been designed with ease of fitting in mind.
Keeping to our expertise with aluminium profiles; the system is easily identified by its characteristic triangular-hollowed core, which provides an incredible strength to weight ratio. POSIone can achieve up to 1.50kN line load resistance when used with glass panels up to 1200mm high, making it a highly adaptable balustrade system suitable for use as edge protection in both domestic and commercial installations.
POSIone has a wide range of finishing accessories including 90° and 135° prefabricated corners and it’s compatible with Balcony Seal®. The POSIone channel is currently available in silver brushed and black brushed aluminium in Base-Fix.
Also new to Pure Vista is our Aluminium slot tube handrail. Perfectly colour matched to our channels and tested to 1.5kN, this is a lighter and cheaper alternative to stainlesssteel handrail. Accessories available include a 90° corner, straight connector and end caps, all made from durable black plastic and suitable for 12mm-21.5mm glass. London-based architect, WHAT_Architecture has specified CUPA PIZARRAS’ CUPACLAD 101 Logic as the ideal rainscreen cladding system for a new and unusual housing block in Peckham. Crucial to this decision was the system’s ease of installation and its natural aesthetic, which helped the contemporary design to also complement the surrounding and traditional urban landscape.
Located on the corner of Costa Street, the project is part of a wider scheme to regenerate the Peckham area. The unusual housing block has been designed to look as if it is falling. It is constructed with a cross laminated timber interior superstructure, while the form of the upper half of the building is a leaning mansard, angled towards the adjoining garden at a 72-degree angle – creating a truly striking aesthetic.
WHAT_Architecture looked at a variety of materials during the planning process, before selecting natural slate. A completely natural material, slate provided imperfections and rough edges, which suited the desired aesthetic for the housing block. In addition, the slate helped to reflect the character of the surrounding, more traditional buildings.
Antony Hoete, Director of WHAT_Architecture commented: “We have used slate here to do things that brick just could not do. The brick components of the building weigh about 150 kg per square meter, whereas the slate comes in at just under 30 kg per square meter. By using lightweight slate, we have been able to create the leaning effect we desired with an incredibly robust building material.
“Furthermore, the metal-bracketed CUPACLAD system allowed us to hide the services behind the cladding and also reinforced our idea of connecting the contemporary with the traditional.”
CUPA PIZARRAS’ CUPACLAD 101 Logic slate rainscreen cladding uses a single aluminium fixing system with selfdrilling screws designed to ensure an optimum cladding installation, while remaining invisible to the eye, to avoid impacting the overall design. The 7.65mm slate used is a
robust and weatherproof roofing material, which has passed the British Board of Agrément (BBA) certificate for impact testing, ensuring that the slate has long-term durability and will remain watertight.
“CUPACLAD is a modern and easy installation system. We chose the CUPACLAD 101 Logic as its design layout also reflects that of the brick base, without actually using brick,” said Diana Kulacka, Project Architect from WHAT_ Architecture.
Terry Collins, Specification Manager at CUPA PIZARRAS commented: “When approached to help find a solution for Costa Street, we started by undertaking a site visit and survey to ensure we would absolutely understand the architectural vision and how to make it a working reality with slate.
“It’s incredibly important to us to have a close and collaborative process, as this helps to ensure the finished project is exactly as desired. Helping us to achieve this is our London showroom, which is a valuable space where architects can view the materials and talk to our experienced team.”
Quarried from CUPA PIZARRAS’ own quarry in northern Spain, the slate used on CUPA PIZARRAS’ CUPACLAD systems requires no chemicals or heating involved in its extraction making it a sustainable material choice as well which, combined with the modern aluminium cladding system, is capable of redefining the aesthetics of façades.
