canopy above. This reaches around the existing house, and continues to the west of the plot, providing an additional sheltered seating space. This canopy incorporates openings for the existing trees and partial shading elements, providing protection to the southern facing façade with delicate timber louvres. In terms of updating the existing house, the traditional geometry has been embraced, using materiality to tie the scheme together. The wrapping gesture is continued with an element of Zinc, beginning on the north elevation of the existing house and continuing over the roof to overhang and provide shading to the south elevation, while the remaining facades of the existing house are now clad in timber to match the extension. A palette of natural and man-made materials was carefully curated. The zinc has a strong agricultural feel that defines the context and client’s heritage whilst providing a protective gesture. This is contrasted with the linear timber cladding which acts as a contemporary, yet rural material, and the fibre cement provides a cool toned solidity to compliment the warm details of timber.

6

7

Visually, the extension appears as a single mass placed on the landscape, with the snug, kitchen/living and dining space, utility room, and two of 3 bedrooms on the ground floor. Small punctuations have been made into the timber cladding to introduce natural light, yet their scale kept modest to protect the rooms from the on looking driveway. The geometry of the façade is clad with fibre cement and provides the dining area with more privacy. The hidden subterranean mass below avoids a visual bulk which could otherwise swamp the existing house’s proportions, and includes a bedroom, plant room and garage space for 2 cars. Internally, the finishes have been kept minimal with cool grey tones, similar to that of the fibre cement cladding. Warm touches are constantly visible through the furnishings and timber cladding. East facing bedrooms catch the morning light and have extensive views over the surrounding South Downs, whilst strategically placed skylights have been used throughout the project to introduce natural light into spaces deeper in the plan. The scheme now stands as a single architectural form that stretches out across the garden setting. Looking at the wider context, the strong geometry sits amongst a structured landscape, which gradually dissolves into the farm land beyond.

Our Wetroom Drain has sunk to New Depths – only 55mm! CCL Wetrooms launch the NEW Lo-Seal Trap for Shallow Concrete Floors

Clever Living from the Screen Experts Power screens from Phantom Screens are designed for large openings and glass extensions. They work with bifold and sliding doors to help improve privacy, energy management and interior environment quality. The trend for glazed extensions has helped us make more of the outdoors. But what isn't always considered at the point of design is that large lighter spaces create attractive habitats for flies and increase interior temperatures during summer months. Our Power Screens help manage these challenges. Available to fit openings up to 7m wide, they can be fully recessed into the building-fabric but are also weather-proof and blend discreetly with exterior framing for retro-fitting. Visit www.phantom-screens.co.uk and click on ‘For Larger Openings’ or call us on 0800 0963015.

CCL Wetrooms, the UK’s leading wetroom specialist, have launched their shallowest ever waterless trap – the NEW Lo-Seal Trap – at a cutting edge depth of only 55mm. Developed specifically for use in wetroom construction projects with screed depths of below 60mm, the new trap allows wetroom drainage to be installed where standard depth drains cannot be accommodated. The NEW Lo-Seal Trap is the latest technological development to the market leading Linear Screed Drain from CCL Wetrooms, which has been providing shallow drainage solutions to architects, interior designers and house builders for many years. Whilst the current trap provides a shallow drain height of 67mm, the NEW 55mm Lo-Seal Trap offers all of the same benefits but with the added advantage of a new slimline trap for installation into shallow screed depths of less than 60mm. For further technical details about the new LoSeal Trap or the Linear Screed Drain, call CCL Wetrooms on 0844 327 6002 or visit www.ccl-wetrooms.co.uk.

Do You Know What Your House Is Made Of? Masonry cavity walls are the most popular option for UK housing and have been for many years. There are good reasons for this, including their proven all-round performance, whilst also being the least expensive of the main walling options. Another reason is the local availability of the materials and labour needed for cavity wall construction. The standardised size and format of blocks provides designers with significant versatility and flexibility. Masonry construction is also readily adaptable, making future alterations and extensions to homes straightforward. Concrete blocks have good sustainability credentials. They are local, low carbon and long lasting. They also include a high percentage of recycled content. Because manufacture and raw material sourcing is all local to the UK, the highest levels of Responsible Sourcing are readily achieved and maintained. ARBOUR HOUSE / NIMTIM ARCHITECTS

T

he client, a young professional, approached us to extend her small 1950’s infill terraced house in Peckham to create a more usable kitchen and dining area with a better

connection to the rear garden. The existing house had particularly low ceiling heights and narrow, awkward living spaces. The client felt that the house had been built from poor quality materials which compared poorly with the Victorian neighbours. The brief was to create a bright and open living space with materials of quality and character.

nimtim took an ambitious approach for extending and updating this small and unremarkable house. Taking inspiration from the Case Study Houses of the 1950s, as well as traditional and contemporary Japanese domestic architecture, nimtim proposed an addition formed of a series of lightweight timber portals running both front to back and side to side. The timber structure defines a series of openings along the roof and onto the rear garden. This grid extends through the house and out into the garden; blurring the threshold between inside and out.

The design references the original Victorian property that was situated on the site before being destroyed in the Second World War; stepping back in plan to echo the original closet wing, while allowing the garden to extend into the living space.

Internally materiality was key; materials had to be high quality, with a distinctive, honest timbre - in direct contrast to those of the existing dwelling. The exposed timber portal frames are in Douglas Fir that creates a warm, pink hue, the floor is poured concrete and an exposed wall of specially selected long bricks runs along one edge of the living space extending out into the garden. A restrained, simple

T

he concept of the project originates due to the physical parameters of the terrain - steep slope due to its location in the Cordillera de los Andes

- and the client requirements of 4 single-family homes of 300 m2. An analysis is made both in section and plan of the plot where a collective project is conceived, interpreted by a series of volumes introduced in the ground with different heights and depths that generate terraced green areas at different levels, each one of the interior spaces has views of the forest to the front and access to the different terraces that are conjugated with the natural environment of the site.

All the volumes are projected as visors that have a direct relationship - visual and spatial - between interior and exterior spaces, achieving continuity between public, semi - public and private spaces. The served spaces are located towards the exterior due to the views, illumination and ventilation while the vertical circulations that connect these volumes are semi buried and illuminated from the roof, turning the project into a composition of lights and shadows in its inside, working the fifth facade as a main layer, within the programmatic system that generates different dynamics in its internal spaces.

Each house is made up of 3 volumes of different proportions which are located at different levels according to the internal activity and its pedestrian and vehicular entrances, breaking the internal monotony where the double height main volume

contains public activities - with a mezzanine with semi public activities, and 2 simple height volumes for private activities. These volumes are connected by a main vertical core with a continuous circulation, which alternates to the other volume as it distributes the spaces.

The 12 volumes that make up the 4 houses are located strategically to adapt to the slope of the terrain but the use of these is overlapping in each body like a fabric, that is to say, the internal use is moving horizontally and vertically in the project generating both transverse and longitudinal views in the exterior and interior, transforming the built masses into a urban landscape. www.tec.com.ec

Customer care is king for kitchen installers

Customer satisfaction and care, rather than ease of work and time spent on the job, are top priority for kitchen installers according to the latest research from kitchen and bathroom worktop manufacturer, Maxtop Quartz Ltd.

Almost three quarters (72 per cent) ranked this amongst their top considerations. Managing director of Maxtop Quartz Ltd, Stephen Moss, discusses how this reflects installers’ pride in their work: “Having worked with installers and tradesmen for many years, we’re well aware that those in the industry really care about what they do and how happy customers are at the end of it.

When discussing how they select material, manufacturer or brand they recommend to customers, 78 per cent of installers questioned said the www.maxtopquartz.co.uk durability of the worktop is the key factor, shortly followed by discussing the comparative quality Quarter of materialsPage used. A-TO-Z HOUSE/ SAW // SPIEGEL AIHARA WORKSHOP

modest home expands through aggregation, multiplying scaled versions of the original A-type pulled along a twisted Z axis. The result is a double

offset – a 2nd story structure to capture sweeping views and a voided landscape carved into the hillside. New forms combine with the old, erasing boundaries.

The A-to-Z House by SAW // Spiegel Aihara Workshop wins a 2017 Architecture Award from the San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIASF).

The A-to-Z House proposes an alternative to conventional approaches for expanding an outmoded San Francisco home. Perched on a hillside in Golden Gate Heights, a modest single story 1934 developer vernacular structure had limited space and failed to take advantage of expansive views of Sutro Tower, Golden Gate Park, Sausalito, and the Bay. But rather than replacing or merely attaching to the existing structure, the A-to-Z strategy seizes upon the existing forms – scaling, repeating, and manipulating found objects into a contextual collection of structures comprising a dynamic home immersed in its surroundings.

A new gabled roof structure is inserted at the ridgeline of the existing living room bar, stepping back from the street to reduce mass and nestling into the existing roof to establish a low horizon line. This datum is characterized by a ribbon of operable windows that wrap two corners of the building to take advantage of critical views, accented by to a sawtooth window system and thickened metal edge. Inside, variations of the floor level and ceiling height provide different ways to experience this horizon in each space, from sweeping vista to private lookout.

B Y : SAW I N C

As the new gabled structure reaches the carefully terraced back yard, it twists and wraps down around the dining room. This turn along a torqued Z-shaped axis (alternately horizontal and vertical) is held ever so slightly apart from the existing house, using a band of light and the articulation of the ceiling to create meaningful difference out of similar forms. MINIMALIST HOME FOR EGG BOUTIQUE OWNER / JONATHAN TUCKEY DESIGN

J

onathan Tuckey Design has completed a project for Egg, a fashion boutique known for its minimalist approach to the clothes it stocks and the way they are presented to

the buyer, acting more like a gallery than a traditional shop. Egg is located on a small mews in Knightsbridge, discreetly hidden by timber shutters that open up to reveal plain white and wooden interiors. This recently finished phase is part of an ongoing re-configuration of what is actually a series of buildings centred around the mews, creating a new home for the boutique’s owner and a much-needed expansion of the back-of-house facilities for the adjacent shop.

The arrangement of internal spaces and the materials selected were inspired by Egg’s pared-back design ethos, which is both elegant and informal. A series of timber containers have been inserted into the existing building, dividing domestic and commercial functions and sometimes blending the two. These boxes sit within the volume of the roof and create the nest-like atmosphere of an attic or store room, with skylights allowing light to pour down into the spaces below. Small openings create surprising views through to adjacent rooms and a timber staircase is made up of a series of planks suspended above the hallway.

Interior walls remain unadorned and furniture is kept to a minimum, further emphasising the minimalist aesthetic and creating a collection of calm spaces to occupy. Built-in storage hides the clutter of everyday life as they blend into the walls when closed. On the ground floor the

CASA SFA/ ARQMOV WORKSHOP

T

he SFA house is a refurbishment project that is faithful to the client’s specific requirements. Arqmov Workshop initially suggested a brand new project, given the previous (quite unfortunate) refurbishment work on the property. However, the

nostalgia of its owner led the firm to reconsider adapting his childhood home to suit his new family – with a wife and three children. Given more than 30 years since the construction of the house, the decision was made to strip its original structure bare, to use the house’s spatial potential and to take advantage of its location opposite to a golf course.

The dividing floor of the residence was demolished to create a large double height volume with large windows to the rear and interior facade to the garden and the swimming pool. Due to the importance placed on light intake in this project, a void was opened on the wall supporting the stairs towards the bar area through which a shaft of light pierces the space. The entertainment area of the scheme - a lounge with a fireplace and large walls with beige stone slab veneers, ring-shaped pendant lamps by Henge and a red-coloured carpet - is crowned by a bar area framed by wooden panels and with wooden floors. In contrast, the dining room is a small

room on a more compact - rather cosy - scale, that can be seen as a recess in which to display art pieces and a designer sideboard with a Pietra Serena stone top. Wooden panels on the wall serve to conceal the doors to the kitchen and toilet. The family room is also double height and is framed by custom-made concertina-like wooden panels that create a presence in the space towards the entrance, the transition to the garden and the rest of the entertaining areas. Once again there are wood, light fittings and upholstery in warm shades. The private areas comprise three bedrooms, one for each child, fitted out to the personal taste and preferred colours of each. Wood features throughout the project. The original master bedroom gains another 150sqm and includes a sleeping area, work desk, reading corner, a seating area and a coffee table. The use of walnut joinery and natural stone is complemented by upholstery in neutral shades. Perimetral and ceiling light are kept separate. The main bathroom and dressing room feature large areas of Italian arabescato marble. The distribution allows for two symmetrical bathrooms opposite each other, joined by a steam shower, and two identical dressing tables. The main facade was also redesigned. The different volumes were integrated through lines which continue from one volume to the other. The integration of squared arches, large openings and feature panels create a bold connection between the old and new houses, including the garden boasting a large eating area by an open grill with a fire pit and the swimming pool. Furnishings, light fittings and art selection were personalised according to each space and, when applicable, each user. Architectural Design: Arquitectura en movimiento Workshop Built Area: 950 sqm

GARADOR ON TREND WITH ITS NEW CHARTWELL GREEN

Replacement aluminium windows for period and new homes

A new look is about to hit our streets! Garador has introduced a new colour option on its steel Up & Over garage doors called Chartwell Green.

The Conservation Range

As a new fashionable colour, Chartwell Green is on the ascent with increased demand for this soft subtle green to add elegance to properties ranging from bungalows to country houses.

• Single or dual RAL colours • A-rated energy efficiency • Fit into timber or direct to stone • UK manufactured

Chartwell Green is now commonly found among existing entrance door and window frame colours on many new build homes and refurbished properties too.

For expert advice call 08008 401 508 www.thwc.co.uk Showrooms at: Sevenoaks Dorking Beaconsfield Loughton

Garadorís Managing Director, Simon Hipgrave commented:

ìChartwell Green has been used more and more on windows and doors in recent years, so it seemed like a logical decision to give our customers a garage door in a colour they could match to their existing windows and doors.î Garador has launched the new shade as a standard colour across all its Up & Over, Side Hinged and Personnel steel door ranges. The paint reference for this colour is Chartwell Green (BS 4800). Find out more about the Garador steel garage door range by visiting www.garador.co.uk or calling 01935 443799.

The plan is cleverly designed to fit a spacious three-bedroom house with flexible reception spaces onto a tight brownfield plot, without compromising privacy for the occupants or neighbours. On entering the house into a double-height atrium, a short flight of steps descends to ground level, where the plan opens out to a kitchen/diner and two reception spaces. A central glazed courtyard and rear courtyard bring natural light and the outdoors deep interspersed with pockets of sunlight and greenery, which can be enjoyed in all seasons. The open plan living spaces are unified with a black concrete floor and animated by a wood burning stove housed within the exposed concrete plinth of the chimney, whose red brick stack rises up beyond the roofline, tethered to the house by concrete supports.

A dramatic oak staircase top-lit by the front window leads up to the two bedrooms and bathroom on the first floor, and master bedroom with en-suite shower room at the top.

The agency acts especially in Parisian region and South-East of France, with a great diversity of projects. The programs of all types, as well public as private, go to an individual house, an office tower or even a luxury hotel. The agency claims an architectural approach both demanding and poetic, built and developed around its own philosophy: “the

romantic rationalism”. This concept connects well a constructive, strict and optimized conception to a precise and meaningful site analysis. The architectures are elegant, soft and timeless. The material nobility takes a primordial place in the project’s conception. This way, PietriArchitectes drew a unique ceramic for the undulating back frontage of La Barquière, a 62-housing program delivered in November 2016 in Marseille. In 2014, the agency won two awards: a mention at Les Trophées VMZinc in the “2014 collective housing” category for Carré Seine, a housing project in Issy-les-Moulineaux, and “Le Geste d’Or” prize for the rehabilitation of La Major cathedral in Marseille. In 2016, PietriArchitectes won with two other agencies the international competition for the Rhine embankments renovation in Huningue. PietriArchitectes is also the winner of two other projects: on the side with Linkcity, for a student residence, a hotel and a nursing home conception located in Asnières-sur-Seine, but also with Vinci Immobilier for a housing program in Neuilly-sur-Seine. In addition, the agency delivered these last months two projects: La Barquière in Marseille and La MaisonA, a private house in Aix-enProvence. Many projects are under construction, such as a luxury hotel named l’Hôtel des Roches in Le Lavandou, a senior residence in Brétigny-sur-

Warmshell Insulation Proves A Winner For New Timber Frame Cottage

M

uch Wenlock is a beautiful historic town in Shropshire, perhaps best known for being the birthplace of the modern Olympics. Full of gorgeous period properties and with space at a premium,

when an opportunity arose for Sandra and Mike to build on a plot in the centre of the town, they leapt at the chance to create their very own dream cottage from scratch. The site was relatively tight and, with a narrow drive as the only means of access, building on the site was potentially challenging. To avoid the noise and disruption of a constant stream of lorries delivering heavy building materials, the couple opted for a timber framed construction, to be built and customised offsite by Hereford-based manufacturer, Taylor Lane. Keen that the property should blend in as much as possible, they chose Lime Green products for the surface render and, whilst consulting us on what products to use, the couple discovered that our highly effective wall insulation system – WarmShell – would be perfect for their new build. It offered an important additional benefit on a small plot over a traditional masonry build. For the same heat U value the timber framed construction has a smaller footprint leaving more space for the garden. Consisting of a unique combination of wood fibre boards and special lime render, WarmShell works by enveloping timber frame structures in a complete layer of rigid insulation with minimal air gaps, or ‘thermal bridges’, across which cold can travel inwards. However, because WarmShell’s breathable insulation means that damaging moisture won’t get trapped in the structure and a healthier environment will be created inside.

A perfect blend of form and function Gazco Riva2 500HL Slimline The Gazco Riva2 500HL Slimline offers striking, portrait flame visuals and versatile installation possibilities. With a shallower firebox compared to that of a typical fulldepth gas fire, the Riva2 500HL Slimline can be partially installed into the internal leaf of a cavity wall, leaving only a small 75mm protrusion into the room. For a simple installation, the ultra-modern Esprit surround can be selected to house the extra depth entirely. Alternatively, for those that prefer a hole-in-the-wall finish, a shallow non-combustible studwork surround can be built to replicate a chimney breast aesthetic. Both options are great for external wall installations and come complete with a balanced flue termination kit negating the need for a chimney. Infrared Marketing Imagine all the effects of the sun’s warmth without the harmful rays. Infra red heating produces gentle warmth that is absorbed by the walls, floor and ceiling of the room, rather than heating the air like conventional systems. The heat is then projected evenly back into the room. With conventional convection heating, such as central heating or a gas fire for example, the air in the room is heated up and circulated around the room, creating cold spots and dust. Infra red heaters produce no carbon emissions, are 100% efficient and can save up to 70% of your current heating and energy costs. Infra red is an extremely efficient form of heating because it is heating you and not trying to heat the air, this will be warmed as a secondary effect. Also, once the panel reaches optimum temperature, it will modulate on and off to maintain temperature, therefore drawing less power. Demand-controlled ventilation by Renson

Renson’s demand-controlled ventilation system combines the constant supply of fresh air through self-regulating vents and the extraction on-demand of polluted air thanks to the central extraction unit Healthbox. Dynamic sensors measure the extraction air 24 hours a day on CO2 or humidity and/or VOCs and adapt the ventilation level to the needs of the residents in an intelligent way. In this way, the system makes a healthy indoor environment possible.

66

The Healthbox is calibrated fully automatically and regulates itself so as to achieve the exact extraction capacity for each room. This avoids the risk of adjustment errors, thereby ensuring a properly working ventilation system with a proper flow rate in each room. This automatic calibration also leads to significant time savings, as installation takes only a couple of minutes. www.renson.be

In In the the early early ‘noughties’ ‘noughties’ II ran ran aa seminar seminar for for ‘Constructing ‘Constructing Excellence’ Excellence’ on on ‘Safety ‘Safety by by Design’, Design’, followed followed aa few few years years later later by by one one on on ‘Designing ‘Designing Out Out Waste’. The The purpose purpose in in mentioning mentioning them them is is to to emphasise emphasise the the fact fact that, that, despite despite new new products products and and new new and and updated updated regulations, regulations, like like those those dealing dealing with with high high speed speed electronic electronic communications communications networks networks (Approved (Approved document document ‘R’), ‘R’), the the house-building house-building industry industry has has made made little little progress progress so so far far this this century. century. Back Back then then II argued argued for for buildings buildings to to be be designed designed via via ‘partnerships’ ‘partnerships’ that that embraced embraced site site constraints, constraints, programmed programmed out out risk, risk, and and ensured ensured good good immediate immediate and and ongoing ongoing communications communications with with present present and and future future stakeholders. stakeholders. II pointed pointed out out that that to to do do so so required required ‘design ‘design teams’ teams’ who who not not only only knew knew their their legal legal duties duties && responsibilities, responsibilities, but but who who understood understood how how the the job job would would be be done. done. In In turn turn this this meant meant grasping grasping the the logistics, logistics, getting getting to to grips grips with with handling handling and and ‘Temporary’ ‘Temporary’ works, works, as as well well as as embracing embracing snagging snagging and and maintenance maintenance along along with with the the lifetime lifetime risks risks of of the the building building both both in in construction, construction, in in use use and and decommissioning. decommissioning. As As in in the the motor, motor, aircraft aircraft and and ship ship building building industries, industries, for for example, example, recognition recognition of of the the increasingly increasingly complex complex nature nature of of the the building building enterprise enterprise was was seen seen as as increasingly increasingly important. important.
