This project began when a couple decided to sell their primary residence in the city to purchase a cottage on the northern point of Archambault Lake in Saint-Donat.

House Sher

House is defined along an axis which separates the living areas on the south side and the Gym and guest bedroom on the north. The linear axis is pronounced by a tower-like lobby and ends with a natural filtered eco-pool as the focal point. Concrete and facebrick walls flank the space from which a steel staircase hangs from steel dowels defined by the meandering skylight above.

SB Architects

Ascaya, the exclusive residential development set in the foothills of the McCullough Range outside of Las Vegas, is celebrating the completion of its first inspiration home. The 7,200-square-foot luxury estate, designed by SB Architects, includes four bedrooms, six and a half baths, an office and entertainment room.

Initially built as a small storage space by the first owner who was a lumberman, the shed was later rearranged into a forest refuge by its next owners. La Colombière (Dovery) thus represents the completion and third phase of this simple one-storey construction into a true retreat expanding on three floors.

Broad Street House is new build home in Suffolk by Nash Baker Architects. The house utilises a palette of natural and traditional materials to blend with the rural street scene, and the exterior uses oak cladding and handmade bricks (both locally sourced) to blend with the architectural character of the village.

In our redesign we removed the walls including a part of a bearing wall, which was replaced with a wooden beam. A kitchen and a living room became one space.

his project began when a couple decided to sell their primary residence in the city to purchase a cottage on the northern point of Archambault Lake in Saint-Donat. It was located

on a picturesque, south-facing site with a hundred metres of private beach. They planned to retire in this magnificent place. They decided to call on the interior design firm FX Studio par Clairoux to transform the rustic cottage into a peaceful retreat for the whole family. Their dream renovation project was about to come true.

Understanding the clients’ wishes Transforming the cottage into a primary residence that is both warm and contemporary:

A trusting relationship had already developed between the clients and the interior design firm because they had already worked together on an earlier project. This fact allowed FX Studio par Clairoux to suggest a highly contemporary design from the very beginning.

The first idea was to inundate the interior with natural light and work with soft, airy textures to create a calming, peaceful atmosphere.

Northern white cedar—a local tree species—was the basis for the colouration and choice of materials. With time, this wood develops a silvery hue on the outside while retaining its blond colouring inside. Using it for both exterior siding and certain structural elements, such as the staircase, the main beam and the living room ceiling, amplifies the project’s overall impression of harmony.

Since the house is surrounded by conifers, the FX Studio par Clairoux team decided to be daring and use green glass accents. Often used in contemporary spaces, clear glass can define different areas while remaining subtle.

Spatial Organization and the Interior Because the cottage was in a wetland, it was impossible to increase its surface area, so the team had to work with the house’s existing structure.

The porch was integrated into the interior environment while preserving its separateness. The northern white cedar walls and ceiling, which are identical to the exterior walls, make the area into an intermediary space between outdoor activities and household comfort. The existing fireplace in the living room was reoriented toward the porch and replaced with a more functional gas fireplace.

Armstrong Commercial Laundry Systems

Primus industrial washers help keep hospital uniforms clean and infection free in nhs Grampian. The Foresterhill laundry is situated on the same site as the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and Aberdeen Maternity Hospital. It handles all the laundry from these three hospitals, as well as another seven hospitals within NHS Grampian, serving a total of 500,000 people in the Grampian region of Scotland. Much of the laundry including all the bed linen is processed in large multi-chamber tunnel washers but some individual machines are required to handle scrubs, other staff uniforms, bags and personal clothing. Last year the laundry needed to replace two machines in this area, and called on Armstrong Commercial Laundry Systems. They installed two Primus industrial

BDG ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN COMPLETE WPP Hamburg’s new workspace strategy

As one of the largest shipping ports in Europe, Hamburg has long been established as a leading transport hub, when WPP took the decision to co-locate its agencies and media companies into a new city central workspace the intention was to establish their presence as a leading creative hub. BDG architecture + design was appointed to undertake the strategy, concept and developed design for the new WPP Hamburg collocated space accommodating over 850 people, which was then delivered in partnership with a local architect and developer. BDG worked closely with all WPP companies in Hamburg, evaluating their requirements in order to develop the strategic architectural brief. This included utilisation and accommodation analysis, observational studies and senior level workshops, results of which defined and formed the workplace strategy for a consolidated working environment. In an attempt to preserve the surrounding nature, the footprint of the building remained untouched. This new phase inspired itself from the natural growth of trees. The link of the tree/house to the soil remains the same while growing vertically and developing an aerial volume reminiscent of tree canopies.

By following such principles, the extension was done without any trees being cut or heavy machinery, which could have spoiled the natural environment offered by the forest. Recalling the bark of the tall surrounding conifer, the exterior volume is covered in dark cedar.

La Colombière’s vertiginous interior is a space painted all in white. Materials and structure of the previous phase are kept and uninterrupted so that the addition acts as an extension rather than an insertion.

On the ground floor, a simple space with exposed structure offers a direct link between rooms and towards the forest’s soil. On the upper floors, each room opens into a vast vertical shaft punctured by an ultra light stairwell, an aerial structure. On the last floor, an exterior covered terrace acts as white perch from where one can admire the surroundings.

Aecom Report On Life Cycle Costing: Continuous Flow Up To 7% More Cost Effective AECOM, a major global player in the building engineering services consultancy arena, has concluded a report showing that continuous flow water heating systems have a clear advantage in terms of initial capital costs as well as life cycle costs over 20 years, when compared with stored hot water systems*. The study** shows that continuous flow water heating systems can be up to 7% more economical than equivalent â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;traditionalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; stored hot water systems. AECOM was commissioned to carry out a life cycle study on continuous flow water heating systems, and to provide a comparison with conventional storage systems. Two case studies were provided that are based on projects using continuous flow water heating systems. AECOM then determined an equivalent storage based system for each case study and compared operational and capital costs.

For the life cycle comparison, the analysis period was 20 years, based on the expected service life. The net present value (NPV) calculation is based on a discount rate of 3.5% (The GREEN BOOK - HM Treasury), an inflation rate of 2% for servicing costs and projected retail fuel costs from DECC1. In both case studies the continuous flow system showed a clear advantage in terms of initial capital costs, as well as life cycle costs over 20 years, with the continuous flow system consistently lower in energy use than the two storage systems.

Case study 1 This was a system for a typical, small, pre-fabricated fast food restaurant. It is assumed the system only serves the hot water demand. The life cycle analysis includes the initial capital costs, projected annual fuel costs, and estimated annual servicing costs which are assumed to increase by 2% each year. The annual fuel cost assumes the same daily fuel consumption over the whole year. The servicing cost is based on £130/ year per boiler, and £160/year for a boiler and cylinder. The resulting net present values of the three showed that the continuous flow system is 6 - 7% lower than the two storage systems based on that 20-year analysis period. Case study 2 This was a system for a shower block in a holiday camp, with six showers and four basin taps. For the continuous flow option, the analysis is based on a configuration of 4 continuous flow water heaters that each have a nominal output of 48 kW, which, for this particular application, because there is a very short run of pipe work between the water heaters and the fixtures, it is possible for the water heaters to generate water at 40°C. The risk of legionella is overcome by regular flushing of the system. For the energy required to deal with the instantaneous hot water demand the analysis assumes that the bulk of the hot water demand would be due to the showers. Each shower would typically have a flow rate of around 9 litres per minute, which if mixed to 40ºC would equate to an instantaneous load of around 19 kW each, so even if there was only one shower running, the load on a single continuous flow water heater would equate to an efficiency of 95% based on the performance curve. As the hot water demand increases, the modular nature of this particular configuration would allow the 95% efficiency to be maintained for the bulk of the demand.

The difference in daily fuel costs between the three systems is around 7%. The usage profile for this case study is particularly suited to continuous flow systems (i.e. high but infrequent demand over the day), which is why there is an advantage in fuel consumption over the storage systems. SYSTEMS EMPLOYED IN THE STUDY * Indirect fired storage systems This consists of separate heat source and storage cylinders, where for this study the heat source will be gas fired boilers running on 80ºC flow and 60ºC return with gross efficiency of 89%. As the hot water is stored at 60ºC in insulated cylinders there will be standing heat losses. The standby electricity is assumed to be 15W per boiler, and 60W when operating to cover fan and controls. Direct fired storage systems This is where the hot water storage cylinder has an integral gas burner to directly heat the water, and the key difference with indirect fired storage systems is that they are designed to operate in condensing mode and generally achieve gross efficiency up to 96%. A disadvantage of direct fired storage systems is that the standing losses are around 3 times higher than indirect storage cylinders. Continuous flow systems This is essentially a gas boiler that is designed to instantaneously heat mains water for supply directly to water fixtures without any storage. The key advantages with this type of hot water heating, is firstly saving in space needed for hot water cylinders and the associated standing heat losses. The challenge is that instantaneous hot water demand can vary hugely for most systems and therefore the continuous flow heating system needs to have a wide modulation range as well as maintaining efficiency over that range. The site was relatively tight and, with a narrow drive as the only means of access, building on the site was potentially challenging. To avoid the noise and disruption of a constant stream of lorries delivering heavy building materials, the couple opted for a timber framed construction, to be built and customised offsite by Hereford-based manufacturer, Taylor Lane. Keen that the property should blend in as much as possible, they chose Lime Green products for the surface render and, whilst consulting us on what products to use, the couple discovered that our highly effective wall insulation system – WarmShell – would be perfect for their new build. It offered an important additional benefit on a small plot over a traditional masonry build. property for a growing family, the core ambition was to create a flexible living space that reflected a new approach to contemporary design, characterized by light and simplicity.

Minimal sightlines and subtle textures generate a sense of relaxation and harmony, whilst glass and douglas fir run throughout the home to create a series of interconnected spaces that inspire social and flexible living. A glass staircase links all floors, allowing light to flow effortlessly through the property, with views up through the home to create a sense of space and continuity.

The project involved a complete renovation of a Victorian terraced house in West London, and included a kitchen extension, loft and basement conversion. The design built within the faรงade of a Victorian home, and sought to modernize it whilst remaining respectful to the existing exterior and setting, creating a flexible living space filled with light within the surrounds of a period property.

Each year 100% Design adopts a theme, which is reflected across its installations, features, talks programmes and show design. he object of a reconstruction is a country/suburban house near Kyiv (Ukraine). It was totally neglected by

former owners. Original building had a lot of small rooms and an attic. In our redesign we removed the walls including a part of a bearing wall, which was replaced with a wooden beam. A kitchen and a living room became one space.

The living room was designed as a double height area, but there was not enough daylight. So we made windows in a roof to enhance the lighting. We offered to set a fireplace in a corner and a plasma TV opposite the couch. Almost all our ideas, including general layout, self-leveling floor, kitchen worktop by the window, combination of colors and others were welcomed by the client.
