ARCHITECTS PROJECTS
APERTURE Chevallier Architectes "I was going to walk in the footsteps of my grandfather" that was the motivation of the architect when he agreed to renovate this residence built by his grandfather, also an architect. And with a particularly emotional commitment, the grandson began a contemporary reinterpretation of the main residence, two generations apart. The project is also a meeting, a consultation between architect and client; a client himself involved in construction and holding a vigorous viewpoint. The latter is committed from the start to being the ideal client, and he endeavors to demonstrate his availability, reliability, investment and, of course, his high standards. It was a robust consultation with sustained commitments. 4
With the help of new technological solutions, the architect was able to "frame" the views and position openings in their ideal positions. A permanent frame on a quiet environment. The challenges were abundant. It was necessary to integrate the modernity of the equipment and the networks, while keeping original parts, including a heat pump, an elaborate home automation, air conditioning, LED lighting and to utilize different materials which the agency had not previously used, including leather and brass. Finally, the maximum size for one of the many bay windows was attained. Today, we could not see how to design a larger one.
ARCHITECTS PROJECTS
"With the help of new technological solutions, the architect was able to "frame" the views and position openings in their ideal positions."
The architect will complete the project based on two assets: the first is close consultation with an exceptional client, as expected; the second is the pride of extending the project of his grandfather, while preserving an authentic architectural heritage that is currently no longer feasible, as in the case of building a house with a pitched roof. *Aperture in English, which in photography defines the opening of the lens through which the light passes to enter the camera. DOES FORM ALWAYS TRUMP FUNCTION? Those involved in the planning, design and construction of buildings, whether for use as living accommodation or working environments are acutely aware that aesthetic consideration is key for both interior and exterior design. It is common and natural to be drawn to beautiful designs as they immediately provide a feeling of tranquillity, peace, and relaxation and that is so important in today’s crazy, pressured world. Within many new build projects, the battle lines are often drawn around wall and ceiling clutter typically being light switches, thermostats, alarm panels, sensors and speakers. The intention is that the property must look a certain way which often removes the control of the creature comforts that a modern property owner still desires. It is a hugely common misconception and a mistake made by many that these hurdles can be overcome by hiding controls away and using a modern-day smart phone, job done and on paper it looks perfect. The looks of these type of projects are stunning and can be real pieces of art. However, unlike art these properties need to be lived in and a poorly thought out user experience will tarnish even 6
the best aesthetic design over time as this is where the secondary sensory feeling comes from, the pure joy and simplicity of using and interacting with the property.
APP OVERLOAD Research is showing that “App Overload” is killing productivity as it creates a sudden mini distraction to a primary thought process. Although it’s great fun to be able to control your lights and turn the heating up and down from your sofa this should never be a primary form of control. A similar issue occurs on wall touch screens that have confusing user interfaces or try to provide too many options. Touch screens also carry an unintended fear factor to visitor or guests as they don’t want to trigger something unintentionally. It really kills the atmosphere giving your guests an induction on how to change the temperature of their room or letting them know which apps they need to download.

Manufacturers seem to want to create their own isolated eco system and have an app for everything. Polar Bear Design takes a different approach, a customer centric approach. This does not mean that the Polar Bear Zentium thermostat is not smart, far from it with its ARM processor and Edge BMS technology. We create a customer led approach by ensuring that the Heating and Cooling controls can be integrated and compatible with as many different control systems as possible which includes the traditional HVAC controls, but also the AV Controllers such as Control4, Crestron, Lutron, AMX etc. This creates a singular interface for the user and the HVAC becomes part of the solution of a Smart Home.
BLENDING FORM AND FUNCTION Technology has matured to a stage where control has grown beyond touch screens. Polar Bear Design believes that they can blend form and function with a range of phenomenally powerful and elegant thermostats that can be combined with lighting controls and offer highly customisable luxury finishes. The Zentium pro thermostat with its digital crown, offers a user interface that has a traditional approach but is underpinned with modern hardware and a beautiful high resolution colour screen. Not only is this thermostat incredibly aesthetically pleasing, the Zentium pro thermostat is capable of directly controlling both air conditioning and heating without the need for overly complex controller systems that need to be programmed by costly engineers.
"As Sir Jonathan Paul Ive, British-American industrial, product and architectural designer and former Chief Design Officer of Apple Inc once said, “There is beauty when something works and it works intuitively."
SO, DO AESTHETICS REALLY MATTER? Aesthetics are always going to be a key driving force for the design of a building, our natural desire for this is unquestionable. If we take aesthetics as one of the challenges that designers and installers face, we have to realise that they are a core design principle that can make a difference to a customer’s final purchasing decision. Aesthetics are not just about the exterior design of the faceplate or fascia of a smart thermostat, which takes on board factors such as colour, style, pattern, shape, weight and more, but it also has to include the design of the control panel and digital display if available. Designers must use aesthetics to complement their designs ease-of-use and desirability. Attractive design layouts can and will be the first impression a customer receives, it could be an initial barrier to acceptance of a product within the building design industry. Polar Bear Design feel that the Zentium thermostat plays a unique role in providing an elegant solution that can work with the design but potentially more crucially, giving control back to the user.
FLOOR TEMPERATURE Some natural modern finishes look stunning and can really create some amazing visual impacts but how do they feel? Natural stone can often suck the heat out of a room and take many hours to heat back up. Wood on the other hand if heated up too much can warp. Creating a comfortable environment in terms of temperature is as important to creating the visual impact. The Zentium Pro thermostat will allow you to have both a minimum and maximum floor temperature. No longer will you walk into a bathroom with a cold floor. This can also help in larger rooms such as an orangeries where the heat will drop out of them overnight and they can then take hours to warm back up. This process puts huge amounts of heat into the floor and that can then often lead to the room over shooting the desired temperature just at the same time the sun is coming out, leading to a higher cooling energy bill. 7
EDITORS CHOICE INTUITIVE NOT SIMPLE It is not uncommon for a thermostat to have buttons that just don’t do anything. Maybe the feature has been disabled, maybe overridden; for whatever reason, this complicates the experience and can even lead to support calls as the user’s perception is that the system is not working. This is also true for the strange choice of symbols and cryptic hieroglyphics displayed on a screen. The luxury client is not interested if it is in frost protection mode, the floor has reached max temperature or in the angle of the ventilation grills. Yes, this information is important and should be accessible, but does it need to be so prevalent? The best user interface is one that from a glance the user knows what’s happening and how to use it. The Zentiums’ digital crown is a universally understood control interface. Turn it up and the room temperature increases, turn it down it stops heating or starts cooling. Press the crown to change pages to fan speed, zone two or towel radiator. There is no language barrier to this interface and different features that are being disabled can be altered. This allows the same thermostat to be used across spaces with different requirements without causing confusion.
INTEGRATION With any modern home regardless of the styling principles, the devices installed should seamlessly create an intuitive solution. Something that looks great often lacks the technical features that a quality installation requires. As an installer, your company profit is reliant on repeatability from the lessons learnt on previous jobs. Why have a different solution if you use Crestron, Lutron, Control4, Savant, Elan etc. Choose a thermostat that can be used with all these control systems so a repeatable design profile can be created. Additionally, it is important to consider its integration with BMS control systems such as NorthBT, Trend 8
and Delta etc. Many AV installers shy away from this key part of an integrated smart building, in much the same way they hide the thermostats away in a cupboard. The broad spectrum of integration offered by the Zentium thermostat allows AV and BMS companies to work in a much more harmonious way. The benefits of this are the deep technical knowledge that BMS companies offer, allowing for a truly customer centric design.
AWARD WINNING DESIGN The Zentium pro thermostat won a prestigious award for CEDIA best new hardware product 2020 and is going from strength to strength as customers agree with the beautiful no nonsense concept. Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) is an international trade association representing the professional home automation/ smart home technology industry. www.polarbeardesign.co.uk 01635 945700 | sales@polarbeardesign.co.uk

BUILDING FOR AN INDUSTRY EXPERT Paul and Jane Hopkins knew from day one that Octagon were the developer to build their dream home. As Managing Director of St James North London – part of Berkeley Group PLC, Paul Hopkins was well aware of Octagon’s well-established reputation, delivering high specification homes in the most desirable locations.
Paul Hopkins comments, “I trusted Octagon from day one, as they share a similar ethos to my company, never compromising on attention to detail or specification. There is a true art to house building, engineering out complexity without losing quality, and Octagon deliver this like nobody else.” The Hopkins spent a number of years searching for the perfect spot to build, eventually finding a 0.6- acre plot on one of Northwood’s premier residential roads. They already knew the estate well, having lived there for 5 years, before temporarily moving away to downsize. Once grandchildren were on the scene, they wanted the space to entertain, so upsizing was back on the cards. Paul explains: “Our aim was to find the worst possible house on the best possible plot in the best road, to knock down the existing property and build a home to our exact specification. The plot we finally settled on was perfect, backing on to a bridle path and Ruislip Woods – we just needed the house to match.”
10
ARCHITECTS PROJECTS
Octagon’s Bespoke team began by showing the Hopkins a number of earlier projects, showcasing the quality of product that Octagon deliver, and providing inspiration for their own bespoke home. Paul mentions: “One particular home in Virginia Water stood out to us, and by coincidence was the perfect dimensions to fit on our plot. It was a huge benefit to be able to walk around a home that near mimicked what we were building, giving a feeling of the sense of space and light that we would

Paul says: “We couldn’t be happier with the end result. Every element is exactly how we envisaged, from the exquisite

stone detailing on the exterior, to the beautiful landscaping surrounding the home.”

“If I had to give a favourite room, it would be the master ensuite. Hidden behind pocket doors leading from the generous master bedroom, the bathroom is a masterclass in the use of book-matched marble. A feature bath sits central to a quadruple length walk-in shower, whilst a substantial roof-light provides views of mature Oak trees, providing a wonderful connection with the outdoors.” Small details make a huge impact, with coffered ceilings throughout the ground floor reception rooms creating a unique and visually interesting feature, while L-shaped glass partitions on each side of the dining room enhance the sense of openness, and provide a practical barrier to prevent kitchen aromas travelling through the ground floor.
Paul comments: “Natural light is hugely important to us, so we incorporated a window that transcends the height of the home overlooking the South-facing garden; the result is a mesmerising column of light which greets us every morning.” The Hopkins brought onboard interior design agency Killer5 from the very start of the project, meaning important details such as the placement of electrical sockets and lighting layouts were established before the first spade hit the soil. Paul adds: “Bringing the interior designers in from the start of the process not only made it smoother and more efficient, but it also meant that the total cost stayed close to the original estimate.” 12

Paul finishes: “Working for one of the most successful and detailed developers in the UK, it was inevitably going to be tough to really impress me, but Octagon did just that. Now we get to wake up in our dream home every day, and that never could have happened without Octagon.” For more information, visit www.octagonbespoke.com, or call 020 8481 7500 13

The best way to avoid this is to ensure you select a door handle that instils trust and delivers that ‘wow factor’. WATERLANE HOUSE POOLSIDE KITCHEN BY BRANDT DESIGN Creative and inspiring British interior design specialists, Brandt Design, create a ‘room with a view’ with this poolside contemporary kitchen featuring its ultramodern Urban Furniture Collection. Julia Steadman, Commercial Director at Brandt Design says, “We are well-versed in creating unique schemes for our customers, especially when it comes to balancing both the practical and extravagant elements of kitchen design. This newly completed kitchen living space is a great example of how enhancing the flow of the entire ground floor, will unify both the design and residents in the home. As trends continue to err towards multi-generational living, a one-size fits all kitchen is now a thing of the past and instead, multidiscipline interiors have taken over to welcome a new era of ‘high-performance’ kitchen living spaces.” Waterlane House is a kitchen living space that is all things to all people, providing a perfect space to cook, dine, entertain and even swim in, thanks to the connecting swimming pool off the main kitchen. Featuring a statement bar-style island, 16
bank of appliances, hidden larder storage and the latest premium appliances for the modern home, the kitchen is zoned by a run of bi-fold patio doors and practical roof terrace with lantern window that floods natural light throughout the ground floor. To accompany the urban flavour of the concrete effect, handleless slab doors is a deluxe 60mm porcelain worktop with square-edged profile, which completes the look and provides a practical surface to prepare and cook food. In the chef quarters, there is a fully integrated twin-set of Gaggenau combination microwave and steam ovens in Silver, as well as a BORA X Pure combined cooktop and extractor that sits alongside a Matt Back Sink by 1810 Company and Quooker Flex Black all-in-one hot water tap with flexible hose.

When admiring the pool, the homeowners can take advantage of the hidden breakfast station to their right. Featuring a Miele Coffee Machine with matching black toaster, marble effect countertop and splashback, this type of lifestyle solution is extremely convenient by creating a practical area to make coffee and prepare breakfast that disappears when not in use. Matt black fixtures and fittings complement the industrial-style elements throughout the kitchen space like contemporary door handles, light switches, window frames and bar stools. Large format square tiles in matching graphite have been designed to run continuously throughout the ground floor and this ensures a direct connection between inside and out, so the kitchen and swimming pool area are intrinsically linked: whatever the weather!

A LOW CARBON NEW BUILD HOME IN HAMPSHIRE Claywood House Claywood House, a new 5-bedroom low-carbon home in Hampshire, is a perfect example of combing unique materials, high-performance bespoke glazing and innovative green power sources to create a sustainable family home. Splitting their two-acre plot of land in half, the client wanted the new home to contrast the existing one completely, so from the original design of a gothic home with turrets and a red brick exterior came this stunning modern home design with timber cladding, pale brickwork and a minimalistic glazing package. Significant excavation was required to level the ground for this luxury new build home before the building could start, and space had to be dug for the home's new indoor physiotherapy pool. The home also has lift access and a clear entrance point for ease of access for all the homes occupants.
20
Utilising a ground source heat pump, a 12kw photovoltaic array and a mechanical heat recovery ventilation system, this low-carbon home showcases exactly how a new home should be built, with the future in mind. IQ are always looking to utilise the latest advances in glazing technology to ensure the systems stand the test of time and will still perform just as well in 20 years' time. Bespoke timber cladding was used for the upper floor of the home, designed to mimic the surrounding trees. The deep coloured wooden slats line the home in a rhythmic pattern, only disrupted by the frameless glazing which allows a vast amount of natural light into the internal living spaces. Grand Designs interviewed the homeowners after the build, talking to them about how the design of the new home revolved around being completely wheelchair user friendly, even down to the smallest details. From a lowered kitchen sink to an elevated washer and dryer, the architects on the

job left no stone unturned when it came to a home that was usable for all members of the family. Internally, the home uses a mostly bright colour scheme to increase the perceived size of the space, which is also aided by the huge influx of natural light that enters through the glazing. Splashes of colour and dark feature walls help to bring depth and character to the interior spaces. Intricate joinery can be seen around the home, and these delicate details bring the design to the next level creating a truly luxurious feel. And the placement of low windows and floor to ceiling glazing allows the sun's rays to highlight these interior design elements. The bespoke glazing package from IQ glass included minimal windows Sliding Doors at multiple points around the home. This sliding door system is the perfect choice for this type of project as the flush thresholds are certified for barrier-free access under DIN 18040-1 and DIN 18040-2. The sliding door that was triple glazed and used the minimal windows 4+ framing profile was designed with the freeway base to maintain a completely flush threshold. This triple glazed sliding door system also included heated glass for condensation relief. Wide corridors and open plan spaces allow the wheelchair dependent client to move around the house with ease and the flush threshold of the minimal windows sliding doors allows for easy access to the stunning garden space.
"Bespoke timber cladding was used for the upper floor of the home, designed to mimic the surrounding trees."
The east and west facing elevations of the upper floor both have floor to ceiling frameless picture windows, allowing the rooms to have clear views of the stunning landscape around the home whether you are seated or standing. Working alongside the architects, the team at IQ designed every aspect of the glazing with sustainability in mind. This specialist glazing package utilised a wide variety of systems including slim sliding doors, structural glazing, steel framed fire rated doors and frameless effect roof glazing. 21
ARCHITECTS PROJECTS
Within the systems, innovative technical glazing solutions were utilised including solar control glass, heated glass and low iron glass. The heated glass was essential for some parts of the home as it prevents condensation build-up, making it a popular choice for indoor pool areas such as this one. All the sliding door systems were motorized to make them wheelchair user friendly. Our motorized sliding doors have a range of control options from a remote to integrating it with smart home automation. Being able to open floor to ceiling slim sliding doors at the push of a button enhances the usability of any space. www.iqglassuk.com Jim Stephenson Photography 22

CUBE | HOUSE PALETTE ARCHITECTURE Palette Architecture blends the traditional and contemporary with addition of new volume Palette Architecture, a firm focused on the creation of built environment that enhances the daily experience of our contemporary lives, is proud to unveil CUBE | HOUSE, located in historic brownstone Brooklyn, New York. The late1800s Italianate townhouse needed rescue. After previous owners stripped away the original details, partitions, and materials, the building's spirit had become muddled. The design brief called for the revitalization of the house's original character, with contemporary connections to history and nature. “The architectural approach was twofold,” says Peter Miller, a Partner at Palette Architecture. “In addition to creating a threshold to the historic qualities by carving a 17-foot square hole into the rear of the home, we endeavored to create new contemporary connections through a 20-foot cube located in the rear yard.” 26
The removal of the rear wall exposes the contrasting qualities of the parlor and garden levels. While the upper level retains much of the building's original detailing, the lower floor does not. A thin metal portal outlines the opening, drawing attention to the contrast. On the lower level, the incision allows for a continuation of an open plan. On the upper level, a gridded glass wall infills the portal and creates a delicate veil to the more traditional character of the upper floors. Taking cues from 19th-century Brooklyn

building traditions, the glass wall becomes a porous threshold between the old and new.
A CUBE OF CONNECTIVITY The cube addition is a minimally-adorned, double-height extension that stands in contrast to the upper floors. It is free of all moldings and partitions, a characteristic that extends throughout the garden level. The narrow edging of the kitchen cabinetry, the elegantly thin borders of the custom herringbone floor, and the thin lines of each light fixture set the aesthetic of this floor. Ancillary programs such as the pantry, cellar stairs, powder room, and wine storage fill the narrow space along the Western edge of the kitchen. “The form of the cube allows for a variety of outdoor spaces, and the carefully crafted openings accentuate connections to nature,” explains Miller. “For example, the upper face of the cube features a large, asymmetrical skylight that provides a tangible connection to the exterior environment, allowing residents to track the passage of time and weather from the interior.” 27
ARCHITECTS PROJECTS The skylight also creates a visual link between the partiallysheltered rooftop terrace above, and the people inside. The rear face of the cube features four full-length doors and a gridded glass curtain wall that faces onto a sunken brick court and manicured gardens beyond. Nestled amongst the native grasses and shrubs, several hidden seating areas were created, as well as a patio for entertaining. 28
UPPER - LEVEL INTRICACIES In contrast to the lower floors, the upper levels are more partitioned and intricately programmed. On the first floor, guests are welcomed into an open, yet formal parlor. Large pocket doors open into a rear library leading down into the cube below. Unique Italianate trims, moldings, and colors

distinguish the library and parlor, evoking a true sense of the building’s original character. A refurbished wooden staircase leads from the entry hall to the more intimate second floor. At the top of the stairs, a personal study, adorned with bookshelves and a pair of glass doors, leads out to a roof terrace overlooking the garden. The second floor also includes the primary bedroom suite, which features a working fireplace, a restored bedroom niche, and a marbleclad bathroom. The third floor features a pair of bedrooms and bathrooms, each with unique wall coverings, fixtures, and lighting.

“The traditional and tailored aspects of the upper floors stand in contrast to the simple and airy qualities of the garden level and cube,” concludes Peter Miller. “However, the cube harmonizes them and mediates the interaction of interior and landscape, just as the incision and 'veil' mediate the two distinct interior characteristics.” www.palettearch.com 29

metal brushed brass and metal brushed copper (PVD coating, Physical Vapor Deposition, which ensures abrasion, scratch and corrosion resistance). The coloured hinges and handles of the pura 5000 have an even more contemporary effect and form a pleasant and elegant visual contrast to the transparency and brilliance of the glass. PHAEDRA GLASS - A CELEBRATION OF COLOUR AND LIGHT
Though the ethos of bespoke, customerled and commissionbased work is the basis of the Phaedra Glass operations, a number of collections have also been developed over the years that are now available to buy
Over the last 20 years of creating glass for the home, the enduring essence of the Phaedra Glass brand has been in the coexistence of the ephemeral qualities of light, colour, depth and transparency with a contradictory robustness and strength in the materiality of double fired kiln-worked glass. These visually arresting glass works are the creations of glass artist and designer/maker Phaedra Politis. With her little nod

to the Arts and Crafts movement, Phaedra’s work focusses on the “beautifully functional and the functionally beautiful”. Always led by the overall aesthetic outcome but driven by their fundamental purpose, her works both adorn and serve simultaneously.
Here visitors will be able to see and touch the glass, they can hold pieces up to the light and generally feast their eyes on a wide display of the Phaedra Glass range.
Representing the culture of handmade quality artifacts, Phaedra, who is mostly self-taught, has developed her own distinctive style from years of trial and error. She admits that some of her experiments were “utterly disastrous” but with a determination and perseverance Phaedra has perfected her own specialist techniques pioneering the use of enamels and innovative designs which are now coveted and sought after by private collectors, galleries and corporations both here in the UK, Europe and the USA .
Phaedra’s latest edition to her treasury of works is the THALASSA glass washbasin range. A considered use of lavish colour combinations washes through the glass basins giving them a mesmerising opulence. In this latest collection you can see the masterful blend of artistic creativity with a dedication to high performance functionality. Every nuance of the design has been thoroughly thought through to ensure that they are not only spectacular for the eyes but have great user satisfaction.
Phaedra’s quintessential designs are driven by creativity and a passion for overcoming the restrictions that glass is generally feared for. Working from her studio on the Wiltshire/Somerset border both she and her small team attend to every creation with the same close attention to detail. Every piece of glass that is designed, cut, coloured, fired and born out of this studio has been thoughtfully considered resulting in luscious glassware that is guaranteed to enhance any setting.
A collaboration with a renowned bathroom designer is now underway and together they aim to have new designs ready later in the year.

2022 KITCHEN TRENDS FROM FURNITURE SPECIALIST, BA BA, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of factory-built, bespoke and made-to-measure kitchens and bedrooms and specialist components, identify the latest interior trends helping to shape the UK kitchen market in 2022-23. Nuala Brady, Group Marketing Manager at BA says, “We are noting that the latest developments in kitchens are placing an emphasis on high-quality convenience and modern originality, and this has revealed a new desire for expedient furniture design that is transformative. Well-considered space planning is therefore center stage right now, with custom furniture and bespoke design services taking the rather dated idea of four-wall kitchen design to new levels of openplan living, which is discreet and perfectly styled to suit the individual and elevate both home and lifestyle. Colourful cabinetry and classic contemporary design continues to win-out as ‘vintage’ becomes a designer term in the modern kitchen and authenticity never out-dates. Marrying two styles together to create a modern take on a timeless interior style and/or architecture, this shift towards eclectic kitchen interiors has stemmed from the markets love of industrialstyle where mixed materials, opposing interior design styles and strong, defining hardware remain a firm favourite.” 38
BA SHARE ITS THOUGHTS ON THE ‘TOP KITCHEN TRENDS’ FOR 2022 - 23: Styles: Furniture is now riding the line between traditional and contemporary design, and the iconic Shaker-style period has proved its worth, inspiring new options where the door is being used to add character and define the overall look and feel of the space. This has led to new in-frame style doors growing in popularity, with varying degrees of ornamentation added to the rail profiles to create classic square panel doors, designs with mock and narrow frames, through to V groove detailing to replicate a five-piece door. The latest handleless designs are also proving successful, especially in multi-generational households where ergonomic layouts and streamlined furniture solutions are called on to create high-functioning kitchen living spaces that are distinctly discreet.

New Bella colours by BA in 2022: Matt Sage Green | Matt Colonial Blue | Light Grey | White New Foil upgrades by BA in 2022: Indigo Blue | Dust Grey Layout: Open plan living continues to champion the broken plan layout, presenting a more flexible ground floor way of living as more and more homeowners want a kitchen that doubles as a social hub whilst retaining a dedicated space for cooking and dining. As a result, a need for practical island solutions like flush-mounted hobs and inset sinks continue to provide clutter free surfaces, as well as key design features like split level breakfast bars and essential low-level storage being used to separate the living area from the main kitchen. We believe this increased demand for practical storage in the home is a direct result of open plan living now being central to all aspects of kitchen design, with many customers erring towards seamless layouts that help to avoid negative space and maximise on the kitchen’s working layout. 97% less water per minute thanks to the specially designed flow-limited aerators that reduce the flow rate, but not the pressure!
We are finding that designed-in sustainability is a big topic right now and given the energy price cap from 1 April, the trend to reduce energy is running in parallel with water-use efficiency. Eco laundry appliances, water-saving showers and toilets, and a range of specialist kitchen taps are now a major priority for the UK homeowner, offering their own green rewards like reduced carbon footprint, energy and waste. The development market is therefore in a prime position to offer tangible benefits to the buyer by choosing sustainable products at the design and build phase, which in the long run, will lower energy consumption and help reduce utility bills for each occupant.”

FLUID CONNECTIONS WITH THE NATURAL SETTING OF BROME LAKE Muuk Architecture, in collaboration avec Adurra Doors & Windows This house, designed by Muuk Architecture, is located on an enchanting site on the edge of Brome Lake in southern Quebec. Built-in place of an old chalet on the tip of Cedar Bay, the clean and sober lines of the new residence highlight the surrounding nature. With openings onto the lake at the essence of the project, and being its initial inspiration, the architects chose Adurra products for the framing of the spectacular discoveries.
CLEARING ON THE HORIZON The terrain slopes gently towards the lake, presenting numerous challenges, and accommodates a volumetry deployed according to the specific topography situated inside of the margins, and outside of the wetlands and riparian protection strips. The ground floor slab unfolds beneath the drop. Respecting the majestic views, a few steps separate the entrance from the living areas, as well as the dining room from the living room, thus allowing for perfectly unobstructed views of the horizon from each zone of the house. The living room, dining room, and kitchen are organized on the ground floor, while the more intimate bedroom areas are located upstairs. A transparent office on the upper level is strategically placed at the heart of the house, offering a view of the lake and the central walkway overlooking the main entrance. In addition, a stand-alone garage studio can accommodate guests on its upper level, with space to store a boat on the ground floor.

“Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this house is conducive to lighter, simpler living, while also inspiring creativity and new ideas within the professionals who live there,” explains Sylvain Bélanger, architect at Muuk Architecture.
MAGNIFIED VISUAL BREAKTHROUGHS The use of white on the surfaces and black in concave spaces results in a bright and luminous house, enhanced by its natural setting. Visual breakthroughs and a juxtaposition of volumes combine in light and delicate form. The fully fenestrated south façade, as well as terraces arranged on

“We chose products from the Essence collection by Adurra, including tilt-and-turn windows and fixed architectural windows which were favored to create a smooth transition to the outdoors. The use of aluminum systems provided superior structural integrity, making it possible to manufacture custom doors and windows outside of the usual standards and space constraints, resulting in a living area in perfect harmony with its surrounding nature,” concludes Costa Pantazopoulos of Adurra. www.adurra.com www.muuk.ca www.nannespringer.com 55

design-led fringe events, pop-ups, workshops, talks and showroom presentations. This year’s edition will feature ten exhibition venues, with three new for 2022. Once again, CDW will host a series of talks in Spa Fields by leading designers and architects tackling topical and newsworthy issues.
Clerkenwell Design Week’s 11th edition celebrates design in London’s most creative district. Set across three days, 24th – 26th May 2022, CDW is the UK’s leading independent design festival, providing a welcome platform for brands to showcase their products and for the 125+ resident showrooms to open their doors to new audiences. The festival programme has been tailored to reflect the unique nature of this culturally rich area playing host to showrooms, fringe events, talks, workshops and installations.
Cult Danish design brand HAY will also be presenting at CDW 2022, installing their stylish outdoor furniture within The Long Walk, part of Crypt on the Green, as well as hosting a number of events across the week. CDW's official automotive sponsor Porsche will be showcasing the design brilliance of the Taycan within an interactive installation.

With Love, the installation will feature talks and music across the three days. CDW will also feature a specially created Wellness Area created by acoustic panel specialist, Texaa. Billi Taps will be supplying free drinking water with water taps located throughout Clerkenwell - visitors can bring their own bottles and fill up – a sustainable nod to the traditional Clerk’s Well that gave the area its name. Lois O’Hara, will also be creating colourful visual installations across the threedays. Conversations at Clerkenwell always prompts lively debates and discussions on the current design scene. This year the talks series taking place across the week in a specially designed venue in Spa Fields. Curated by Katie Richardson, Conversations at Clerkenwell brings to life topics of the day with leading and emerging designers, architects, thought leaders and creative institutes. Talk highlights for 2022 include New London Architecture, who will explore the revitalisation of town centres and a new ‘hybrid’ work pattern that impacts suburb vs the Greater London’s economy. Jonas Pettersson from Swedish design studio Form us With Love, will discuss movements in sustainability and the future of design, post-pandemic. Designer Adam Nathaniel Furman and Architectural Historian Joshua Mardell co-editors of ‘Queer Spaces’ for RIBA Books, will share some of the book’s historic, contemporary and speculative examples of Queer Spaces

from around the world. Benchmark will join a panel on wellness, alongside Trifle*, looking specifically at workplace design and what progressive spaces now need, by way of space as well as materials. BIID will shine a light on some of the female talent within their roster of interior designers. The 2022 talk space is designed by Fieldwork Architects, with a concept that reimagines the traditional Victorian bandstand as a focal point within the park, a place for gathering, discussion, entertainment and shelter. Rather than a traditional forward facing seating arrangement, the nature of the bandstand form allows the focus point to be partially in the round and engage the audience as a discussion, rather than a presentation. Daily yoga sessions will also take place in the Talks Space at 9:00am. The full talks programme will be announced closer to the show. www.clerkenwelldesignweek.com

APPLELEC PARTNERS WITH CDUK TO BRING M | R WALLS EXCLUSIVELY TO THE UK AND IRELAND
Applelec is delighted to announce we are partnering with leading supplier of surface materials CDUK to exclusively present a unique line of multidimensional parametric walls, designed by renowned Californian designer Mario Romano. M|R Walls are textured, etched and multidimensional wall surfaces made from Corian® solid surface material, with designs inspired by Mario’s love of nature. Up until now, decorative building surfaces have largely been confined to repetitive, three-dimensional tile pieces, limiting creativity and design potential. Mario has revolutionised design technology with a patented manufacturing process, involving the latest in parametric computing and CNC machining technology, not only expanding the use of solid surfaces exponentially but also its creative possibilities with its unique non-repetitive designs. Unlike drywall this versatile, non-porous, low-maintenance product can be milled to create three dimensional patterns and surfaces which are combined with an impressive puzzle piece assembly. This unique function simplifies installation so that it is no longer arduous or expensive but easily pieced together to create seamless surfaces for large or small scale design schemes.
With an extensive range of stylized and abstract shapes that are sympathetic to the natural environment, these designs are transformed into bespoke wall coverings, customised to suit the specified area. But it doesn’t end there, M|R Walls are also fully customisable, so can be used to present corporate branding, creating eye-catching, elegant schemes which complement the overall design. Backlighting can further be incorporated to provide depth and interest through the texture of the surface. The resulting solution is a unique fabrication which is visually engaging and tactile, like nothing else out there on the market. “The combination of our 20 years plus manufacturing experience and unrivalled signage and architectural lighting expertise, with CDUK’s strong reputation as the leading supplier of surface materials, will form the perfect partnership to bring Mario’s innovative and exciting product exclusively to the UK and Ireland markets through www.parametricwalls.co.uk,” said Founder of Applelec, Ian Drinkwater. M|R Walls’s Mario Romano was equally enthusiastic: “I couldn’t be more thrilled to team up with Applelec and CDUK to make this happen. They’re the best UK partners we could have hoped for, and this is hands-down the most exciting design market in the world right now. I can’t wait to see the fantastic and ground-breaking projects this alchemy will bring to life.” www.applelec.co.uk

7 REASONS DESIGNERS AND ARCHITECTS CHOOSE FORMICA® LAMINATE FOR DOORS
When it comes to choosing materials for door applications, there is no shortage of options. But only Formica® Laminate offers a powerful mix of performance, endurance, hygiene and long-term value. That combination of benefits is why Formica® High Pressure Laminates (HPL) are so well regarded across the design and construction industries. Nina Bailey, European Design Lead at Formica Group, says: “Doors are not only functional fixtures to close off spaces – they are a key part of the overall interior design and can often be the finishing touch to creating a crisp and refined look.“
WHEN YOU CHOOSE FORMICA LAMINATES FOR YOUR DOOR APPLICATIONS, YOU ENJOY: 1. Impressive toughness. All Formica laminates are highly resistant to stains, impact and scratches – making them ideal for busy areas or high-touch surfaces such as doors or work areas. 2. Long-lasting performance and beauty. Formica laminates can be installed with the confidence that they will maintain their quality and aesthetic appeal for many years to come offering better life-cycle value than lower-cost alternatives. 3. Inherent hygiene. All Formica laminates are inert, so they don’t promote bacterial growth. You don’t have to worry about specialist cleaning materials, either. Warm, soapy water is all you need to keep your laminates in perfect condition. 4. Moisture resistance. The surfaces of our laminates are non porous. A well fabricated door with sealed edges can be used in washroom and changing room settings, without fear of imminent damage or degradation. 5. Cost-effective production and easy fabrication. Formica laminates are lightweight and easy to cut to size. To ensure optimised door design and to provide maximum efficiencies in conversion, saving time and reducing material wastage, four different sheet sizes are available: 2150x950mm, 2350x950mm, 2350x1300mm and a large general 3050x1300mm sheet size.
6. Natural product textures. State-of-the-art textures can be incorporated into the laminate manufacturing process, instantly changing the look and feel of the final product. Linewood, Puregrain and Naturelle are favoured surfaces for wood decors while Matte58 is a timeless classic for colours. 7. Extensive aesthetic choices. The Formica Doors Collection includes 20 new wood decors. Additionally, a large selection of 120 plain colours are available, including 15 new colours offering the ultimate flexibility in creating an eye-catching feature door. Sheet-to-sheet consistency minimises the risk of non-matching doors across an installation. View the full Formica Doors Collection today at www.formica.com. 69

TREX RAINESCAPE Adding a deck to one’s garden is unquestionably one of the best investments a homeowner can make, no matter the size of the garden and with outdoor space being at a premium, it is important to make the most of the space you have. Storage is a common problem many homeowners suffer with, whether it is storing garden furniture, cushions or some garden tools – we all have items that need to be put away. Yet not everyone has the space for a garden shed. For years, homeowners, builders and contractors have neglected to take advantage of under-deck spaces. However, it can offer the perfect storage solution for space conscious homeowners. The secret to creating a successful under deck storage system is adding a deck drainage system. Using a network of troughs and downspouts, these systems capture and divert water away from a deck, not only preserving the studwork but also making the area under the deck useable for storage. For optimal protection and aesthetics, Trex RainEscape offers an above the joist system. It uses an ultra-durable, rubberized

membrane that drapes down into each joist bay. The membrane pieces are shaped so that they can be stapled to the top of the joists yet hang lower at one end of the bay to facilitate drainage. When the joists cantilever past a bearer, separate pieces are installed on each side and sloped to direct water to the gutter on the inner face of the beam. MAGPLY DOUBLES UP ON SHORELINE PROPERTY TO WITHSTAND THE ‘SANDS OF TIME’
A striking new three bedroom beachfront home on the East Sussex coast has been designed to not only respect its location within an area of Special Scientific Interest, but also withstand the challenging weather conditions as well as shifting sands, with Magply boards specified as part of both the roof and wall construction. Sea Breeze at Camber Sands is being built by Coast View Property Ltd., with RX Architects being the locally based design practice leading the project. The unique residence’s amenities will include a wellness spa with a steam pod, sauna and plunge pool, while the open plan living accommodation offers large expanses of glazing looking out across the beach. The building is making use of non-traditional construction methods, which features twin 12mm layers of the rugged and versatile Magply boards as a carrier for a render like finish, applied by the Micro Cement Company across the entire envelope. Some 190 of the 12mm boards have been supplied to the site through the Rye branch of Parker Building Supplies. In the case of the habitable roof-space, the contractors are applying a single ply Renolit rubber membrane over a sarking board and then bonding aluminium rails along the line of the rafters, to which the two overlapping layers of Magply are fixed with stainless steel screws. The pink coloured finish is then applied as a primer, base and pigmented topcoat.
78
The Associate at RX Architects leading the project, Rob Pollard, commented: “We have specified Magply for a number of projects, generally where there were fire protection issues due to the closeness of other buildings. We know once it has been used to sheath the structure that we have the fire rating to safely timber clad over the top or use any other material. In the case of Sea Breeze it also makes an ideal substrate for the Micro Cement finish, being so stable. The designs are focused on creating a really robust covering for the rubber membrane that still allows us to obtain the warranty for it.” Nick Browne from Coastal View Property, added: “Weighing 38 kg each, the Magply boards are fairly easy to handle and cut, while we are having to predrill them here because of fixing into the aluminium channels bonded across the Renolit single-ply membrane. We expect to be finished by the end of October, ready for the Micro Cement system to be applied.” Magply offers a fire-safe and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB products. Additionally, the unique production process keeps the chloride content to just 0.01%, enhancing both stability and long-term durability. The different thickness of panels are also widely used as a substrate board for the direct application of proprietary render systems, as well as for flooring and flat or pitched roof build-ups. CARDIFF APARTMENTS MEET BS 8629 CODE OF PRACTICE WITH INSTALLATION OF EVACGO Two seven-storey residential apartment buildings in the cultural and social hot-spot of Cardiff Bay are now protected by evacuation alert systems from UK manufacturer, Advanced. The EvacGo panels have been installed to meet the criteria set out in the BS 8629 Code of Practice for the design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of evacuation alert systems for use by fire and rescue services in England and Wales. Situated in Cardiff Bay’s Tiger Quay development, Roath House and Queen Alexandra House are a mix of 73 social and market-rented one and two-bedroom apartments managed by Trivallis, one of Wales’ largest housing associations. Trivallis appointed Cardiff-based, Tremorfa Ltd, to complete the installation, requesting that Advanced’s EvacGo solutions be installed to ensure both residential buildings met the BS 8629 recommendations.
82
With all Advanced evacuation alert systems custom-manufactured to reflect each individual building’s evacuation zones, Advanced supplied two EvacGo systems to Tremorfa complete with 1-loop card, expandable from four to eight evacuation zones. The two systems were installed alongside a combined total of 63 sounders to provide audible warning to building occupants in the event of an emergency. www.advancedco.com
