Kinderlou Forest reduces workload with Capillary Bunkers
Georgia semi-private course instals liner system to beat washouts
The Kinderlou Forest course in south Georgia is in the middle of a project to instal the Capillary Bunkers liner system in a quest to make better use of its course maintenance labour resource.
Designed by the firm of Love Golf Design, run by PGA Tour legend Davis Love III, and opened in 2004, Kinderlou Forest is a semi-private course. Part of a substantial real estate development, the course has 250 members, about half of whom live on the property, and is also open to the public. The course played host to the Web.com Tour every year from 2008-2016, and is the venue for the Korn Ferry Tour’s qualifying school this year.
“The bunkers were originally designed to have flat bottoms with turf rolling down the sides,” explains superintendent Heath Allen. “But the course is about eighteen years old, and the bunkers had not been touched in that time, so we have started to see a lot of erosion when we have a big rain event.” The course has a total of 84 bunkers, the majority of which are found on the more open front nine – the tree-lined back nine has fewer, bigger bunkers.
Allen has been at the course for sixteen of its eighteen years. “In the last five to eight years, we’ve noticed a lot of washouts and erosion. The first few years I was here, we’d have big rains and minimal impacts, but recently, it has got a lot worse,” he says. “We were spending more labour on bunkers than on any other part of the golf course – even greens. That didn’t seem right to me.”
Allen started looking around at bunker
liner products. “I saw the Capillary Bunkers system at the GCSAA show in 2020, and I was very impressed,” he explains. “The biggest issue is that we maintain our bunkers using machines. I felt that if we used a fabric liner, and it snagged on the machines, we were going to spend a lot of time and money repairing it. We want to do this one time
and not have to worry about going back in to replace anything. And the Capillary sytem is very easy to install – there are very few restrictions about suitable weather, or time of day, and so on.”
Georgia-based contractor Pristine Golf started work on the project in July. “We ran into a few issues getting
“

started – the bunkers were not properly flat-bottomed any more,” says Allen. We hauled a lot of dirt in to raise the bottoms and get them flattened out.”
Twelve holes are done, and Allen hopes to be finished by the end of October, though the Korn Ferry qualifying school forced work to be paused for a while.
We have had three rain events over two inches since they started, and I’ve been very impressed. No washing out, no
algae,” he says. “We do get a lot of algae, and it has been getting worse, so we are installing the Capillary Wash Box, which will allow us to pressure wash the sand and extend its lifespan. On over half the bunkers, we’d have to go in and scrape
off the top layer of sand after a rain event, because it was contaminated. After we’re finished, we’ll be able to pressure wash those bunkers, which will save time and money.”
Amazing coincidence at Landmand Fourball qualifier
Childhood friends from Surrey, England, win (separate) places at Kiawah, five thousand miles from home
Storey
The recent qualifier for the USGA Amateue Fourball, held at the new Landmand course in Nebraka, produced a remarkable result. With two qualifying slots available for pairs to compete in the final, to be held. at the Kiawah Island club in May, both qualifiying teams contained a player from England. And, by an amazing coincidence, those two Englishmen were childhood friends, who have known each other since the age of four.
Sam Storey, assistant golf coach at Morningside University in Sioux City, Iowa, and his partner Corey Matthey, took the first qualifying spot with a 65. The second spot went to Zac Jenkins and his partner Lucas Scherf, who shot a 66 around the King-Collins designed Landmand course, which only opened in September. Storey and Jenkins were childhood friends in Surrey, England, and were in the same class at school between the ages of four and twelve.
“I came to America in 2018, after putting myself on a site called ProDream USA, designed for young golfers seeking a college scholarship,” says Sam. “I ended up at Morningside University in Sioux City, which was great for me – I wasn’t a brilliant player when I came out, and my time at college has really done me good. Zac used the same site, and by pure coincidence, ended up at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. That’s amazing enough, but to find ourselves qualifying for a USGA championship at the same venue, on the same day, is quite astonishing.”
Given that he is based in Sioux City, only a few miles from Landmand, Sam was very familiar with the new course. “I had probably played five rounds there before the qualifier, but Corey and I saved our best golf for the day,” he says. “Corey is a local guy, born and bred in Sioux City, though he now lives in Scottsdale, Arizona. Because I knew the course fairly well, I was able to tell him where and where not to hit it. It’s all about playing the course the way it was designed – it is a long, long way from being a stereotypical get a
yardage and hit it there tournament course. We executed our game plan really well. Our main plan was no bogeys and take on the par fives, which is not a normal strategy for fourball golf – you normally have to attack the golf course all the way round. But there are places at Landmand where you can run up a big score, so it paid to be a little more cautious. I think the field contained quite a lot of players who had heard about the course and really wanted to see it. I understand that – it’s a remarkable place.”
and Jenkins were childhood friends in Surrey, England, and were in the same class at school between the ages of four and twelve.
Kubota announces further expansion with George Browns
Kubota (UK) Ltd is pleased to announce that George Browns Ltd has opened a new depot. Located in Witney, West Oxfordshire, this new site creates a wider spread of dealership locations across its sales area, that better meets the needs of its customers.
Essentially a depot relocation, the opening of the Witney branch has seen George Browns’ groundcare-only Haddenham depot close its doors to enable the development of this latest full-line tractor dealership in West Oxfordshire.
“Geographically, our new depot in West Oxfordshire puts George Browns and Kubota within easier reach for many more customers,” explains Steve Brown, managing director of George Browns. “This is another strategic move for our long-term business partnership with
Kubota, to grow the groundcare and agricultural machinery aspects of the business.”
As a result of good infrastructure in west Oxfordshire, the new site offers easy access for customers and more usable space for the workshops - both internally and externally. Longer term, the plan is to employ a total of 12 staff at the depot, and the business is keen to encourage an uptake of apprentices across the business, for parts and service roles.
“It’s great to be part of the local economy, by bringing business and job creation into the area,” says George Browns’ group sales manager for agriculture, James Gibbins. “And as a full-line depot, Witney will be providing sales, service, parts and support for the Kubota tractor and implement ranges, in addition to Kubota groundcare equipment.”
Henry Bredin, general manager of Kubota (UK)’s Tractor Business Unit, fully supports the relocation.
“We’re delighted that George Browns continues to develop its partnership with Kubota,” he says. “This new depot is a tactical move that actively supports a wider customer base in both agricultural and groundcare sectors, across the Browns’ area.”
George Browns’ Witney location complements existing depots in Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Essex, with the Chesham and Buckingham branches now supporting those existing groundcare customers who used the former Haddenham site.

Johnsons J Premier Pitch proves tough enough to withstand high wear at Boreham Wood
osting upwards of 70 fixtures in a season, it’s fair to say that the grounds staff at Boreham Wood Football Club have their work cut out when it comes to creating a pitch able to withstand the pressure of sustained levels of play. Add to that a lack of under soil heating and lighting rigs which means it’s down to mother nature to assist Head Groundsperson Ben Howell in the establishment and germination of seed – which for the last five years has been Johnsons J Premier Pitch, with fantastic results!
H
The pitch is home to National League Boreham Wood FC, alongside Arsenal Women and Arsenal Men’s Under 21 home fixtures which was the reason a replica of the Emirates Stadium pitch was installed at Meadow Park in 2017. Ben, part of the Arsenal grounds team, is assisted by Jack Reed and contractors Premiership Lawncare in the maintenance of the ground. “The play schedule is seemingly never-ending but our budget and resources are not, so we have to be sure that every operation we carry out is going to give us the desired result” explains Ben.
“When it comes to seed, wear tolerance is undoubtedly the key for us, but we also need something that recovers well and demonstrates strong resistance to disease.” For this, Ben uses J Premier Pitch from Johnsons Sports Seed. This 100% perennial ryegrass mixture features a proven combination of cultivars that provide high shoot density, rapid recovery and a camerafriendly finish even under intense wear.
“With this mixture, I just know it works! We’ll use it during our full renovation in the summer and then we will overseed again in the spring to repair any damage sustained over the winter which normally sees us through to the end of the season. It gives us the strength we need and holds up well against any disease, even this year which has been a challenging summer with very high disease pressure over an extended period. With the help of our preventative disease management programme, we have been able to
deliver a high-quality playing surface.”
Ben adds, “Our local DLF Technical Advisor Craig Spooner comes in regularly to check how the seed is performing and has always been fantastic at helping and advising us should we be looking to make any changes to the programme. He appreciates that with our calendar there is no margin for error, but with J Premier Pitch we always have a surface that is fit and ready for play.”
Switch to Suståne delivers strong and sustainable greens at Wildernesse Golf Club
Agreens programme from Suståne® has been praised for delivering sustainable, steady and healthy growth at Wildernesse Golf Club. After making the switch six years ago, Course Manager Mark Todd cites that the combination of bi-monthly granular feeds and regular liquid applications has actively encouraged the natural soil biology, helping to reduce disease occurrence and in turn costly fungicide applications.
Wildernesse is widely recognised as one of the finest courses in Kent, with treelined fairways and fast-paced push-up greens regularly playing host to a number of England Golf and Kent County events. On the maintenance, Mark is supported by a team of ten. “For us, sustainability begins with working with what we have, looking at ways of encouraging both the biology and the species we want for our greens” explains Mark. “We chose the
organic route to be more in-keeping with the older-style construction and straight away spoke to Suståne® after hearing great feedback from other clubs.”
“Russell Riley from Suståne® came in and, following some soil analysis, created a programme which we first trialled on our chipping greens. After just six months we could see the good results it was achieving which was when we decided to roll the programme out across all of our 20 greens.”
The programme consists of Suståne’s 4-6-4 slow-release fertiliser, 5-2-4+Fe and Suståne® Turf Revival® 6-2-4 which is applied regularly, in addition to being Mark’s ‘go-to’ for post renovation recovery. Turf Revival® 6-2-4 combines sources of water-soluble nitrogen with Suståne’s unique organic compost base which supplies a range of nutrients to enhance recovery and replenish soilincluding a rich supply of humus and
mycorrhizal fungi which contribute to efficient nutrient uptake and overall plant health.
“We have definitely noticed an improvement in plant health, less disease activity and steady growth – not peaks and troughs which tend to be evident with other products. We have also seen an increase in our bent population which is obviously beneficial for a more sustainable management approach moving forwards.”
Mark continues, “In addition to our regular feeds, we’ve also had great success with Suståne®’s Bolster® liquid plant biostimulant.” Bolster® is specially formulated to prepare plants for stress conditions by increasing root mass and growth, and accelerating chlorophyll production, improving its tolerance to heat, cold & frost and minimising pressure from parasitic nematodes.

GroundWOW ®
A trail blazing year for the turf tech innovators
022 has been another busy year for GroundWOW® as they continue to make their mark on the sports industry – quite literally. After launching in 2019, the technology innovators have continued to gain traction with a huge leap in activations on major playing fields, most recently
being St George’s Park and Emirates Old Trafford.
In October, GroundWOW® helped to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of St George’s Park, home of the England national teams and the FA. The FA Group Marketing Department reached out to
the innovators with a campaign proposal requiring a grand scale commemorative design on the centre of pitch four. Using their SFX ULTRA™ model, GroundWOW® printed the tenth anniversary design directly onto the perfect canvas at one of the world’s leading training and educational establishments.
“
Using their SFX ULTRA™ model, GroundWOW® printed the tenth anniversary design directly onto the perfect canvas at one of the world’s leading training and educational establishments.
Created pixel by pixel, the image contained the highly decorative design intricacies of the Three Lions as part of an activation that measured a whopping 400 square metres in size. The whole activation was a class act completed in time for the Home of England Football to welcome The Prince of Wales, President of the FA.
This print was the debut of the SFX ULTRA™ system, and there was no better place for this than St George’s Park. The Staffordshire facility oversees the development of elite English football in a performance-first environment, a fitting location therefore for GroundWOW® to demonstrate its transformative technology that is taking on the sports sector with a performance-first approach.
Another standout moment for the innovators was at Emirates Old Trafford, home of Lancashire Cricket. The objective was to print a giant logo for the University Academy 92 (UA92), measuring 5m wide by 9.5m long, in a tight operational window in time for the Lancashire v Derbyshire encounter. UA92 Manchester Academy, which is located directly opposite the cricket ground, is a higher education institute formed by the Manchester United ‘Class of ‘92’ with football legends including Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes among the group.
This project required the use of the SFX MAX™ ground printer which has a 3m wide printer head attached making it faster to print bigger images.
The robot operated in 10mm pixels to create a pixel perfect replica of the UA92 logo in high resolution. Each swirl, line, and dot in the logo was included in the print.
The SFX ULTRA™ and the SFX MAX™ are two of the systems announced during a product range expansion earlier in the year. The four systems come alongside substantive subscription models to suit an array of use cases. From navigation to surface ability, these developments have resulted in systems which meet a wider range of requirements.
They include the original SFX PRO™ features plus extra qualities from autonomous navigation to 3m wide printer heads for larger scale activations. The SFX PRO™ was developed with pitch side presence in mind but also had the capability to create larger out-of-home advertising campaigns. The other three models, SFX MAX™, SFX APEX™ and SFX ULTRA™, create campaigns more efficiently as they are now more suitable to fit the requirements of larger, creative prints.
All GroundWOW’s trailblazing work has
not gone unnoticed as the company has received recognition from five awards nominations within the space of three months. The awards put GroundWOW® up against big name players within the technology, sport and entertainment industries.
The nominations include Small Tech Company of The Year at Prolific North Tech Awards, Sports Technology of The Year at Sports Business Awards, Leading Technology/Digital Innovator at This Is Manchester Awards, Hottest B2B SaaS Start-up at The
Europas, and Innovation Award at the Stockport Business Awards which they went on to win. This was their 11th innovation award win following their win at TheStadiumBusiness Summit in December 2021.
All of this is gearing GroundWOW® up for another fantastic year full of exciting partnerships, expansion of the company and the continuation of taking the sports industry by storm.

The successful future for the new Tiny Pro X is all marked out
TinyMobileRobots recently announced the launch of the latest model for GPS robotic line marking technology, the Tiny Pro X. Packed with a range of brand-new innovative features and hardware upgrades, the Tiny Pro X is designed to make line marking projects as streamlined and effortless as possible and is already generating rave reviews within the industry.
TinyMobileRobots is marketed and distributed in the UK exclusively by Origin Amenity Solutions which brings
together four leading industry names - Headland Amenity, Rigby Taylor, TurfKeeper.com and Symbio.
The Tiny Pro X appeals to a wide audience; it is designed for fast and accurate initial and overmarking of a huge variety of sports ranging from mainstream athletics, football, and rugby to the more obscure such as Quadball. Pre-season can be a stressful time for grounds maintenance specialists, but the Tiny Pro X not only saves money but also saves time, meaning the operator can carry out
other essential tasks such as mowing, aeration, spraying and spreading while the robot does the marking. This makes the most of valuable resources and supports general pitch improvement when seasonal workload is at its peak.
Jayne Leyland, a Product Manager with Origin Amenity Solutions comments; “We are delighted to bring the Tiny Pro X to market. It is the most advanced robot from the TinyMobileRobots UK range and builds upon an already solid offering but with added extras. It has really taken off in the UK as it delivers many
sought-after features, including ease of use, time & cost savings, reliability, and accuracy. We are already receiving fantastic feedback and reviews from our customers”
MULTI-SELECT TOOL
Perhaps the most popular new feature is the multi-select tool. Recurring feedback is the positive time saving that the Tiny Pro X is affording its users.
This tool gives users the ability to queue up multiple pitches to be marked out in a specific order of their choosing. The

robot will then mark out the designated areas without the user having to recalibrate the robot each time.
To help avoid problems, the robot displays the route it will take to mark out all queued pitches, so the user can ensure that the path is clear of obstructions for a seamless line marking project. As a part of this feature, the robot also gives an estimated time of completion as well as the distance to drive so users know when they can expect their project to be completed
LOW PAINT ALERT
Working hand in hand with the MultiSelect Tool, the Low Paint Alert feature ensures no time is wasted due to running low on paint when sending the Tiny Pro X off to mark multiple pitches in succession.
When the robot is running low on paint, an automatic alert is sent to the user’s
hand-held tablet notifying paint level is low.
In addition, the robot will also send an alert if there is blockage which is preventing the robot from marking. A simple yet time saving feature that users are reporting is incredibly useful.
Ian Wigglesworth from Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council is another happy user of the Tiny Pro X. He pointed out the Low Paint Alert as his favourite new feature, stating: “It’s good to have the peace of mind that you haven’t set
the robot off on a line marking project with barely any paint in the tank! It means I can carry out other jobs nearby, but I don’t have to be monitoring the robot closely and I can get straight over to it to top up when it runs out. The Low Paint Alert is such a simple new feature but one that’s helped increase my productivity so much, definitely one I’m thankful for!”
CUSTOM LOGO FEATURE
With the Tiny Pro X, users are now able to mark out custom logos
It’s very straightforward and efficientusing the tablet supplied with the robot, users only need to follow a simple three step process which will then enable them to paint a logo of their choice at whichever size they desire on their grounds.
This revolutionary feature has been in the works for a while and has been heavily requested, and the TinyMobileRobots UK team are now delighted how well received it has been.
Users are already taking advantage of this feature and it is returning rave reviews. One of the first customers to take delivery of the Tiny Pro X, is full of praise for the robot and its custom logo feature, stating, “I have started to use this feature. We marked a 20-metre bespoke crest for a primary school, and they were over the moon with it. I am promoting this feature to schools and councils as we approach remembrance Sunday when poppies will be in demand.”
UPGRADED HARDWARE AND ELECTRONICS
In addition to the host of new features, the Tiny Pro X boasts general hardware and electronic upgrades too. The robot now has buttons to activate the pump and nozzle, which allows users to prime, clean and test their robot without the use of the tablet. Thanks to the electronics upgrades, it produces the most reliable and powerful line marking results seen so far from the wider TinyMobileRobots
UK range. The robot itself is compact and robust, ensuring it can be transported easily but can also withstand the elements.
Danny Perkins from Groundtel, was particularly impressed by the upgrades. He commented; “You can really feel and see the added quality when the Tiny Pro X is in action. It has cut down the time spent line marking and I love how easy it is to clean and test it now. With all the new features and the upgrades, it is
certainly an investment worth making and one that’s had a great impact on my team’s work.”
Combining cutting edge technology and brand-new features, the Tiny Pro X delivers reliable and accurate line marking and is fast becoming indispensable for grounds maintenance professionals.

Iseki fleet is the top gun
Alandscape maintenance contractor has revealed why he insists on using ISEKI tractors for maintaining two former RAF (Royal Air Force) stations.
Keith Clipsham works for Urban andCivic, and he looks after two unique, former RAF stations. RAF Waterbeach and RAF Alconbury have since made way for new housing developments and Keith is the man responsible for keeping the vast areas of green space intact.
“We cut approximately 350 acres
at Alconbury and 400 acres at Waterbeach, so we need machinery that is 100% reliable,” he said. “This is why we have three ISEKI machines.”
“My first ever ISEKI tractor was a 47hp, and that has carried out approximately 3,500 hours with a flail on the back of it which is still going strong.
“
With a superior lift capacity of up to 1,600kg, the ISEKI TG6687 allows you to run all your implements without the need to increase the size or horsepower of your tractor.
Based on the success of that, we bought a larger 80hp model and again it is brilliant.
“Most recently we wanted one in between the two models we already have and our dealer, Fentons of Bourne, recommended the ISEKI TG6687.”
The ISEKI TG6687 is fitted with a Stage V 67hp engine and is compact in size with all the accessories and options of the higher specification tractors. The technology allows for easy operation and less fatigue on the driver.
With a superior lift capacity of up to 1,600kg, the ISEKI TG6687 allows you to run all your implements without the need to increase the size or horsepower of your tractor.
The HST model also gives users the benefit of cruise control, which is perfect for a variety of turf maintenance implements where accuracy is required. The PS model has an F12/R12 Power Shuttle transmission.
It is safe to say that Keith is pleased with the newest addition to his ISEKI fleet.
“It is excellent for what we want it to do,” continued Keith. “It is so quiet in operation and its fuel consumption is between 50-60 litres per day which we are very happy with. Furthermore, it is very user-friendly and comfortable. On other brands of tractors, I struggle with leg length, but I don’t with an ISEKI. The options to adjust the seat are great and you are not jumping about like a kangaroo like you are on others. None of us that use the ISEKI machines struggle with bad backs which is a good sign!
“The air-conditioning is very beneficial, and maintenance wise it is very simple – for example it is very easy to declutter the radiators of any debris, dirt or dust.
“Overall, I would highly recommend ISEKI – it cuts a huge amount of grass and cuts it quickly.”

Aberdeen FC purchase brace of INFINICUT® mowers in the charge towards carbon neutrality
berdeen Football Club have made a major step forward in their aim of reducing emissions by 50% by 2030 with the purchase of a brace of batterypowered mowers from INFINICUT®. The combination of an INFINICUT® SM34
rotary and 34” floating head mower form part of a wider sustainability strategy for The Dons – reducing not just their carbon footprint but noise pollution too.
The Club have recently added their signature to the UN Sports for Climate Change framework - underlining its
intent to become carbon neutral, and are implementing a plan across all areas of operation to meet this commitment. In charge of this for the fibre-sand stadium pitch is Head Groundsperson David Nicholson, who alongside his team of four are now discovering the many benefits of battery-power.
“
From our very first conversation with Bobby McDougall at INFINICUT®, we could see how the purchase of these mowers would be a fantastic step forward in reducing our fuel usage and improving our green credentials.
“From our very first conversation with Bobby McDougall at INFINICUT®, we could see how the purchase of these mowers would be a fantastic step forward in reducing our fuel usage and improving our green credentials” explains David. “Once we’d decided battery was the way to go, it didn’t take
us long to settle on the INFINICUT’s® – we had a demonstration of both the rotary machine and floating head cylinder mower and were so impressed that we didn’t look at anything else!”
“We thought the cut quality of our previous petrol-driven machine would be hard to beat but the cut we get from the INFINICUT® SM34, together with the powerful suction, is superb.” Used for the post-match clean-up cut, another thing that has impressed David and the team is the noise – or lack of it – emitted from the mower, equipped with a UXR lithium battery. “Sometimes it would be half an hour or more before we could resume work after a fixture because of media interviews happening around the ground but with the SM34 we can be out and cutting straight away.”
“It’s comfortable to operate and simple
to control. We can manually adjust the height of cut really easily and settings such as the walking speed can all be set via the INFINIApp® which means that in the winter, when the ground is softer and the plant is more vulnerable, we can simply slow it right down and achieve a better result.”
Also delivered in July 2022 was an INFINICUT® FL34. “This has been another fantastic purchase and the floating head has without doubt improved the quality of cut and, in turn, had a really positive impact on plant health even in this relatively short period of time.” David concludes, “These machines tick a lot of boxes but ultimately do the job of cutting and presenting a first-class surface better than any other machine we’ve used.”
DOUBLE EDGE – Biostimulant
With more and more chemicals being withdrawn from the market, groundskeepers are turning to biostimulants to feed, strengthen, and protect against disease. The need to follow an IPM program is now more important than ever and being more environmentally conscious this isn’t such a bad thing either. Using DOUBLE EDGE in a regular spray program will cut the need for conventional chemistry by strengthening the plant and allowing it to better withstand disease pressures.
DOUBLE EDGE is powered by GoActiv Technology and Amino Acids, which boost plant health, protein synthesis and aids stress recovery on sports pitches & turf. GoActiv Technology improves the movement and
distribution of these amino acids, water, and nutrients through the plant by increasing the enzymatic activity that improves rooting, water movement and nutrient uptake.
Composition:
• GoActiv Technology (Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed filtrate)
• Vegetable amino acids (complex of 18 types)
• Nitrogen (N) 2%
• Phosphorus pentoxide (P2 O5) 1.8%
• Potassium oxide (K2 O) 1.2%

KEEP YOUR KNAPSACK FOR LONGER
- TAKE LANTRA’S LATEST SHORT COURSE
and-based Awarding Organisation Lantra has launched a short course to help heighten awareness of the key role that due care of knapsack sprayers plays in maximising lifetime and safety of the equipment.
Lantra added the Knapsack & Handheld Sprayer Maintenance course to its portfolio in October, before announcing it at Saltex in early November.
Adopting material supplied by professional knapsack sprayer manufacturer Hozelock-Exel, Lantraaccredited training providers Outlook Training, Greenscope Training and Harper Adams University collaborated to design the course, intended “to prolong equipment lifetime, ensure correct application of liquids and save time and money”.
“The course is designed to develop the knowledge to maintain and service handheld pesticide, feeds and control products applicators,” says David Fisher, Lantra Head of Industry Partnerships, “and is available for learners aged 16-plus who hold Safe Use of Pesticides and Handheld Application of Pesticides qualifications.
“For pesticides and general users, it is vital to ensure equipment is safe, fully calibrated and in good working order,” he adds. “The outcome from taking the course is that operators can prolong the life of their sprayers, while also helping the environment by using trusted equipment.”
The new course, embracing theory and practice, will equip learners with the knowledge and understanding to:
Strip down the knapsack;
Identify damaged or broken parts that need replacing;
This is a major advance for the sector.
Allan Wainwright, Sales Manager (Commercial Spraying)
“
Pursue safe working practices and personal safety;
Reduce risk of incorrect/off-target application;
Enable companies to ensure compliance with the Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
Operators can recertify after five years, confirms Lantra, which says that after completing the course, operators will keep their knapsacks in good working condition for longer by identifying damaged or broken parts, then replacing them, rather than disposing of the whole unit, so boosting their cost-effectiveness.
Allan Wainwright, Hozelock-Exel Sales Manager (Commercial Spraying) adds: “Raising awareness of the importance of knapsack maintenance has been a cornerstone of our strategy for some time.
“I’m delighted that the knowledge operators need to extend sprayer lifetime has been assembled into a certification of training by Lantra. This is a major advance for the sprayer sector.”

Foamstream proves a real all-rounder, following switch by Tim Brooks Garden Services
Switching to the nonherbicidal Foamstream system for total weed control hasn’t only brought benefit for the team at Tim Brooks Garden Services in terms of time and efficiency, the fact it is glyphosatefree has been very well received by their customers too! Owner Tim Brooks purchased an L12 from Weedingtech two years ago and comments that the machine has already paid itself back multiple times
over – both in terms of the additional work it has generated and the convenience and fewer treatment cycles that Foamstream demands per year.
Tim and his team of three undertake all gardening and landscaping tasks, mainly in domestic settings, which was the reason for the switch to a weed control solution that would be kinder to both people and the environment. “Customers are far more conscious of the negative
impact of chemicals now on health and their surroundings, so we decided to trial various different alternatives to Glyphosate. We tried burning and hot water treatments, but found Foamstream to be by far the most effective” Tim explains.
Foamstream is an organically approved process, utilising a plant-based foam comprised of naturally-occurring oils and sugars which acts as an insultation blanket to the active ingredient - hot water - maintaining ‘kill zone’ temperatures of 57oc+ to penetrate and kill a full range of broadleaf weed species. In independent trials, the efficiency of Foamstream was found to be comparable to that of Glyphosate, out-performing other nonchemical methods.
Not only that, but because Foamstream sterilises the spores and seeds before weeds appear, we have found that we are only having to treat surfaces once or twice a year which is significantly less than the multiple applications of Glyphosate that were previously required.”
Safe to use around children, animals and environmentally sensitive areas such as watercourses, Foamstream has also opened up new opportunities for Tim when it comes to working on commercial jobs in conjunction with local authorities. “We’ve demonstrated our Foamstream service to a number of town councils who are all looking for more sustainable, chemicalfree alternatives. Their positive response mirrors that of everyone we speak to, and we can only see that Foamstream and its benefits will continue to open more doors for us in the future.”
“One of the big benefits we have found is that we can use the same method for multiple purposes – treating weeds, moss and algae but also for surface cleaning and pressure washing which is fantastic. www.weedingtech.com
The Water Works Predicament
Completed in 2022, Jacksons Fencing was specified to install Securi-Mesh® security panels and ball-stop fencing for Water Treatment Works in Surrey, for one of the UK’s largest water utility companies. Sewage Treatment Works are an important site for any water utility company focusing on the treatment and processing of local wastewater. Perimeter security and access control are essential at most water treatment works, however at this site, there were additional challenges.
THE SAFETY REQUIREMENT
The treatment facility shares a boundary with a recreation ground, therefore there is a high risk of objects such as stray footballs entering the site facilities. As a result, a practical solution compromising more than just boundary security fencing was needed. The solution would need to be beneficial and complement both the treatment plant and recreation ground users.
Additionally, the recreation ground is in close vicinity to a local community centre with an attached preschool, so ensuring all are safe and secure is paramount.
TWO SOLUTIONS, ONCE FENCE
In order to create a safe, secure, and long-lasting boundary fencing solution for the water treatment works, more than 230 metres of Securi-Mesh® security panels were installed around the perimeter, backing onto the treatment works itself. Two different heights were specified; 3 and 5 metres,
and these were installed to prevent the risk of vandalism and tampering with the high-security site. A break-in could result in a threat to public safety, so preventing this was a top priority.
Securi-Mesh® fencing boasts an anti-climb design; its small apertures between the mesh wires eliminate foot and hand holds, and it is also highly resistant to cutting with conventional hand tools. The tamper-proof bolts and clamp bars secure the overlapped mesh panels to posts, and this system further deters any form of criminal behaviour or entry by preventing the panels from being prised away from posts.
BIGGER, BETTER, SAFER
To reduce the risk of balls and other airborne objects entering the recreation ground and landing on the water treatment facilities which include several wastewater bins, tanks, clarifies, and covers, Jacksons’ Ball Stop Fencing was a key component in the boundary

solution. Sitting at 6 metres tall and strategically placed behind goal posts, the fencing blocks the airspace and rebounds items that are likely to hit in key areas. This form of fencing also reduces the temptation to attempt to trespass onto the site due to the sheer height of the fencing solution.
The first to feature a double lattice post design, the fencing is strong enough to allow the webbing or mesh to remain in place throughout the year.
With the use of a top rail for safety and structural rigidity, combined with either polyethylene netting, galvanised chain link, or galvanised welded mesh, this type of fencing is ideal for a variety of sports sites, to keep balls in play and prevent disruptions.
Installing this form of fencing with a 25-year guarantee and powdercoating it green satisfies the local community; ensuring it blends in with the surrounding environment and stays looking good for many
years. It also limits the risk of repairs and replacements, which are more common with low-quality fencing. Opting for a cost-effective long-life product with a high-security rating, the treatment works ensures that its boundary is well protected, not only from potential trespassers and airborne objects but also from vandals intending to cause harm.
Peter Jackson, Jacksons Fencing Managing Director, comments: “We are delighted to have helped the sewage
treatment works create a secure environment for the local community and help protect this critical infrastructure. Hearing that this site was at risk of being a target by vandals or trespassers is disappointing, but I am delighted that Jacksons Fencing has been able to address the issue by installing a robust fencing and security solution to protect the site and those in the local area of Surrey.”
He continues: “We hope that with the security solutions we’ve implemented, people in the area, those using the recreation ground, and the service industry can continue without any disruption. We are incredibly confident in our products, and we hope that the Securi-Mesh and Jacksons’ Ball Stop Fencing can give the Sewage Treatment Works peace of mind that this investment is beneficial and will stand the test of time.”

Trilo S4 and BL960 prove the perfect pair for Calcot Park Golf Club
ATrilo S4 is proving that multifunctional machinery doesn’t have to mean compromised performance for the team at Calcot Park Golf Club. Assisting Course Manager Tom Jennings with various maintenance tasks including scarification and cut and collect of the sites biodiversity areas, the S4 is currently tasked with keeping on top of leaf collection with assistance from their new Trilo BL960.
The undulating 18-hole parkland course designed by Harry Colt resides within an exclusive private estate in Berkshire, providing the
picture-perfect backdrop for players of all abilities. Pre-empting the amount of time and resources that would be required to keep on top of leaf clearance, an S4 was one of the first investments Tom made when he joined Calcot Park four years ago. “With such a huge number of trees, investing in equipment to collect leaves as quickly and efficiently as possible was a priority. As soon as we saw the Trilo S4 it was a no brainer.”
“We purchased the whole package, including flail and scarifier heads which converts the machine into one we can use year-round. The board don’t
want to spend money on a machine that spends most of the year sat in the shed, or that doesn’t do a good job of what it is supposed to do – the S4 ticks all of the boxes.” Over the year, the team are utilising the S4 for cutting the eco grass areas and scarifying the roughs, along with vacuuming scarified material and other debris from the fairways. “With all the attachments, its versatile, but conducts every operation really well.”
“In the autumn, the amount of labour this machine saves us is brilliant. Where before the team would have to get into ditches and clear leaves

manually, now we can use the S4’s wander hose to suck up the leaves in a matter of minutes.” To complement the S4, the club have recently purchased a BL960 blower from Trilo, delivered by local dealer Lister Wilder. “The blower we had on our fleet ran on unleaded and with fuel costs going up,
we worked out it was costing us £50 per day to run. I had used a BL960 at my previous club and it’s bulletproof so bearing this in mind, along with the savings we could make by running it straight off the PTO shaft and tractor, it was an easy decision.”
The BL960 arrived in September 2022, just in-time for a busy autumn and winter season. “This blower is so powerful – it moves material quicker and leaves a much cleaner finish than our previous machine. To clear the fairways previously would have taken ten passes or more… with the BL960 the job is complete in two so not only are we getting better results, it takes fewer resources and is done in less time. I, the team and the club couldn’t be happier with our investment.”

Forward-thinking school invests in future with new machinery fleet
Aprestigious college with a history of producing elite sporting athletes has marked its 100th anniversary with a significant investment in its groundscare.
Lord Wandsworth College in Hampshire has completely renewed its machinery in order to maintain a huge area of sports pitches, running tracks and amenity grounds.
A GPS precision sprayer has been added to the fleet, and combustion engines have given way to electric wherever possible in line with the college’s sustainability ambitions.
Founded in 1912, Lord Wandsworth left a generous bequest in his will to educate the children of agricultural workers and children who had lost one or both parents.
“
We’ve been with John Deere for 15 years – they’re always very competitive on price and the reliability of the machines is as good as any.
“The outdoors is still at the heart of the school, although the emphasis on farming has been replaced by sport, with notable former pupils including rugby stars such as world cup winner Jonny Wilkinson and British & Irish Lion Ugo Monye,” Alistair Cotton, Grounds and Gardens Manager, says.
Other notable alumni include Squadron leader George Johnson – the last remaining member of the 1943 Dambusters raid – HelloFresh founder Patrick Drake, and Claudia Gwinnutt, who created the beauty brand Circla.
Out of the total 1,200 acres on the site, the team is responsible for 150 acres which includes 14 winter pitches ranging from full size rugby and football to touch rugby and seven-aside football pitches.
“There is also a full-size and half-size astroturf pitch and in the summer there are six grass cricket squares, two artificial cricket grounds and a grass 400m running track,” says Alistair.
“It would be enough to keep 13 people busy – at the moment, we only have a team of five.”
With staff recruitment an issue, a common problem at present in the industry, ensuring that the kit is up to speed and efficient is particularly important.
The grounds team upgraded its fleet of John Deere kit this year, to better service the sports fields, some of which have
increased in size, and to contribute to the college’s overall aim to reduce carbon emissions.
“The school was passionate about cutting carbon emissions even before the current issues with power prices,” he says. “Opting for electric TE Gators was just one element of that – they’re also about to install solar panels on all the roofs to try and offset the utility bills.”
So far, the team have been pleased with the performance.
“They last a day and we’ve had no issues with battery life,” he says. “Compared to the combustion Gators we had before, they are not as fast, but if you’d never had one of the older models, you’d wouldn’t know – they do the job just as well.”
A significant investment in solar panels across the college’s buildings will see the Gators charged by on-site renewable energy in the near future, but the team continues to run a diesel TH 6x4 Gator.
This new collection of kit marks the school’s third deal with John Deere through their local dealer, Hunt Forest, in Blashford.
“Each deal has grown year on year to the point we’re at now,” Alistair says. “We’ve been with John Deere for 15 years –they’re always very competitive on price and the reliability of the machines is as good as any.”
The team’s schedule is dictated by the school timetable. “We know when all the fixtures are and we know we have to be
off the pitches by around 3pm because that’s when they’ll all be out playing,” Alistair says. “In the school holidays, when the pupils aren’t here, we do things like irrigation – we do it ourselves, no contractors are involved.
“We try to do as much ourselves as possible and keep contractors to a minimum – we’re lucky that the school has the financial resource to provide the extent of the machinery we require. There aren’t many schools that would.”
Lord Wandsworth College is one of the only independent schools in the country to operate a John Deere Progator GPS sprayer. It’s an investment which Alistair says is hard to justify on the chemical saving alone, but one that takes into account the overall improvement in performance and the ability to evolve other practices using the technology.
“Not only does it improve the spraying, but it also makes everything else better too – the process is better because of it,” he explains.
“We’ve put the infrastructure in for GPS on the three series tractor as well so we can use it for fertilising and other things.”
The 7700A fairway mowers are used to cut the cricket outfield in the summer and the winter pitches throughout the winter. The 9009A cuts in-between the pitches and the athletics area in the summer.
The deal also included two 4066R tractors, an 8900A triple mower and the Gators have trailers on the back to transport mowers and markers around.
The team has also taken delivery of a 3046R compact tractor alongside the five electric TE Gators.
“The team has been really pleased with the new kit – with John Deere, it doesn’t matter what machine you’re in, it’s all the same excellent quality and ease of operation.” Alistair says.
Electric greens at Sheringham Golf Club

A
ll-electric ride-on power arrives in East Anglia for the first time as Sheringham Golf Course becomes the first club in the area to purchase Toro’s all-electric eTriFlex 3370 riding greensmower.
When ranked 75th in the 2022 National Club Golfer Top 100 Courses in England, the work undertaken each year isn’t just about maintaining the status quo, it’s about working hard to enhance the club in meaningful ways, according to course manager Ricky Goodman, and in 2022 sustainability is top of the agenda.
Currently in his fourth year at the Norfolk club, known for its unique ocean and stream train views, Ricky made his bid for new Toro machinery when he arrived, and the board supported the move once they understood all the benefits this change would bring to the club.
Ricky says: “I shared my plans and ideas for the course and how bringing Toro in, the quality of the machines and innovation of the brand would benefit the course and with finance through distributor Reesink available, I got their backing. Clubs in Norfolk, including this one, are known for using a specific brand of turfcare machinery and our club was ready to move on and set itself apart, all it needed was a little push.
“We’re focusing on many sustainable initiatives this year and using lithium-ion battery-power for cutting our greens spearheads them all. The all-electric eTriFlex 3370 ticks so many boxes and
solves many issues. There’s no noise pollution which means we can start mowing earlier without disturbing the residents we have bordering the back of the club and we no longer need to worry about oil spills on the greens, which causes incredible damage.”
In addition to this, Ricky explains how the club is using solar panels to create its own energy and is replacing plastic tees with biodegradable wooden ones instead. Irrigation is a top priority, both supply and storage given the recent draught and Ricky is “looking into water storage and capture for irrigation for the paths and fairways”, alongside construction works, including levelling tees that are 100 years old. Ricky is also cutting back on the nutrients in the greens to help preserve more sustainable species.
The Greensmaster eTriFlex 3370 is not the only Toro machine the club is investing in, also on order are a ProCore 648 aerator and Reelmaster 3575-D. The reason for further expanding the fleet is for the brand’s longevity and resale value as Ricky explains: “Toro machines can run for five to six years no trouble; they have a market leading resale value and whereas other brands would go off-cut very quickly with Toro it’s just a quick click and you’re back on it. Plus, I can take all units off quick release and back on in five minutes, other brands would take 30 minutes just to take them out so productivity with Toro is much improved.”
It’s certainly a decision that’s proved itself with Ricky’s seven-strong team, the members and board, says Ricky: “The Greensmaster eTriFlex 3370 mower is the benchmark, the next level in turfcare machinery, and we couldn’t be happier with the difference we can see on the course. All-electric mowers are the talk of the industry, and discussion on their benefits has influenced other clubs to go green as well. We’ve had a lot of interest in ours – the local contractor mechanics have asked to borrow it for training, getting to know the machine and preparing for how the market will be progressing. It won’t be long before every golf course will want one.”

STAY WARM THIS WINTER WITH MAKITA
Makita has released its latest heated jacket, helping to protect wearers against the elements. Powered by the reliable 18V LXT battery, this new warm and stylish jacket is a must-have for cold, harsh jobsite environments, or for outdoor leisure in the cold winter months.
The latest DCJ205 heated jacket is here to offer maximum comfort and durability. Thanks to the five heating zones, users benefit from continuous warmth in the chest and back areas whilst also having control over the three heat level settings. The powerful 18V LXT battery offers even longer continuous runtimes, with a fully charged battery lasting seven hours on the highest setting, 11 hours on medium, and 29 hours on low (when powered by the BL1850B 5.0Ah battery). Customers can use existing batteries or purchase one with the DCJ205 as a kit.
The jacket’s olive coloured, polyester outer lining makes it waterproof and windproof, whilst the inner fleece lining helps keep the user warm and comfortable even with the power off. Additionally, it is fully washable and dryable, so cleaning is easy and hassle-free without damaging its heating capabilities.
It is also equipped with a twoway zip, offering more flexibility when wearing a tool belt, as well as six pockets. And last but not least, this lightweight product is available in a range of sizes, catering to sizes M to 2XL.
said: ‘We are very excited to be releasing our new LXT heated jacket. We understand the harsh conditions that our customers are faced with during the colder months, and have designed this product with comfort, durability and style in mind. Even without the aid of our LXT battery, this jacket is an excellent product that will prove invaluable both on site but also in other outdoors environments.”

M The GreenMech evolution
oorland Treescapes can definitely say they have experienced the ‘GreenMech evolution’, with the delivery of an EVO 165D the latest in a sizeable list of different models Owner Simon Stockton has used over the years! Sitting proudly on his fleet alongside a QuadChip 160P, both woodchippers are busy on a daily basis, making light work of a heavy schedule for the small family-run team.
Simon established Moorland Treescapes almost 20 years ago, and for most of that time he has turned to GreenMech to supply chippers to suit his broad range of domestic and commercial tree works. “As our workload adapts, what we need from our woodchipper fleet changes. This means that over the years we’ve had three QuadChip’s, a 19-28 SAFE-Trak, ArbTrak 200 and then more recently, a tracked machine from the GreenMech EVO series” explains Simon. “With each machine you notice little tweaks to the design and functionality but with the EVO, it was like a whole new machine!”
Due to a reduction in embankment working, Simon has recently switched from a tracked EVO 165DT-45LE to the road tow EVO 165D. “This is proving to be a brilliant piece of kit for us. Improvements have been made to simple things like the manual override control which means that the infeed will continue to pull material through and not leave you standing in and amongst brashy or thorny material. All of the basic service points are accessible and centralised greasing makes that process really quick and easy. On top of those practical things, I think the EVO’s just look great too!”
With the EVO 165D tackling a lot of commercial work around Staffordshire
and Derbyshire, including large-scale projects on behalf of BT, the QuadChip 160P is bringing its own benefits to the day-to-day domestic jobs. “The QuadChip with the rotatable turntable is great for jobs on the kerbside. The ability to turn the chipper to be able to feed material from the pavement is brilliant for operator safety and means we don’t have members of our team working in the road.”
“In addition, we have always had fantastic service from GreenMech and our local dealer Global Sales because the nature of this industry means that things do inevitably go wrong. In my book it’s not the problems that matter, it’s how a company resolves them and Global have always been brilliant in helping us when they arise.” Simon concludes, “As there is only four of us, having equipment that does a good job and is backed up with brilliant support is like having an extra member of the team!”

The first ever stand on topdresser!
Earth & Turf Products is happy to introduce the first ever stand on topdresser! Though there are a variety of uses, this unit targets compost and sand spreading to manage soil health.
Over recent years, our customers have asked for a stand-on version, one that can cover ground faster than walking, that doesn’t require a towing vehicle, and spreads evenly. For 2 years, our engineering team sought out the ideal spreader system and came up with the 415-SP.
This unit is self-propelled, with a standon plate on the back. It has a 4-wheel hydrostatic drive system which means you have a motor on each wheel, allowing for 4
wheels to drive if need be. The spreader boasts a 15-cu. ft. hopper that can be heaped to 1 yard of light material and spreads 48” wide at a top speed of 7MPH. The expeller brush spins fast enough to propel material into the grass canopy
ahead of you, while stiff bristles regulate the spread.
