MAKES AERATING EFFORTLESS

The IQ dual-clutch F24/R24 gear box was chosen as it makes manoeuvring the tractor around the course whilst operating the equipment so easy. Another feature we really like is the Auto PTO function or the Headland Management System, it is brilliant for when we get to the end of the run with the aerator, we can lift the implement up, the PTO automatically cuts out, we can turn around then lower again and PTO restarts by itself. Brilliant for safety and avoiding damage or excess wear and tear on the implements themselves.”

UK’s first Bobcat compact tractor working hard in Yorkshire

The first Bobcat compact tractor purchased in the UK and Europe is working hard on the Meadow Farm property in Laverton Village outside Ripon in North Yorkshire. Purchased by the property owners, the Ball family, the new CT2540 compact tractor has joined new Bobcat E10z and E26 mini-excavators already purchased by the family for work on the site. All of the new Bobcat equipment was purchased from and is supported by the local Authorised Bobcat Dealer, Bedalebased Grays Machinery Ltd.

Originally from the area, the Ball family have recently moved back to North Yorkshire with the purchase of Meadow Farm and other properties

in the village. Much of the work at the 300-year-old Meadow Farm is being carried out by Stephen Ball and his father, Steve Ball, who splits his time between properties in the UK and the USA.

Using the new Bobcat CT2540 compact tractor and miniexcavators, Stephen and Steve have been carrying out extensive landscape restoration and redevelopment work at the farm. Stephen commented: “My sister who lives in the USA has a Bobcat compact tractor and she has been impressed with its performance. She recommended that we buy one for tasks around the properties here. We have been very pleased with the performance of the new CT2540there’s plenty of work for a compact

tractor to do, including maintaining the stables and arena for our horses.”

COMPACT TRACTORS TO SUIT EVERY REQUIREMENT

Bobcat compact tractors are part of the company’s ground maintenance equipment (GME) range launched last Autumn. Together with the compact tractors, the GME range in Europe includes mowers and turf equipment, as well as Bobcat’s existing mini track and small articulated loaders.

The CT2540 is one of nine compact tractor models from Bobcat from 25 to 58 HP designed to meet the varying needs of customers in Europe. The CT2540 is part of the 2000 series, one of three series of compact tractors in the range, which include

the 1000 and 4000 series. Each of the nine models in the Bobcat compact tractor range varies in size and engine horsepower, with the option to choose between manual and hydrostatic transmissions; 3-point hitch with telescopic or quick lower links and open canopies (ROPS) and cabs.

The CT2540 purchased by the Ball family has a hydrostatic transmission and is equipped with turf tyres. Like all of the Bobcat tractor models, the CT2540 comes standard with 4-wheel drive. Customers can easily engage it whenever the work demands it – enjoying superior power and traction in even the toughest working conditions. The CT2540 at Meadow Farm also has an auto-PTO, mid-PTO and a front hitch, which are also standard on all models in the range, which is not the case on several of the other tractors on the market today.

TRULY MULTI-PURPOSE AND CUSTOMISABLE

Together the nine models offer a wide choice of clever application solutions and can be equipped with front, mid and rear connections and power take-offs. Instead of an auto-PTO, features on the tractors can include an independent PTO, PTO Cruise, HST Cruise or Draft control ensuring optimum productivity and uptime.

All the models offer all-day comfort in the cleverly designed and generously appointed workspace. With air conditioning (cab models), a suspended seat, an adjustable steering wheel, linked pedal and intuitive ergonomic controls.

The CT2540 at Meadow Farm has the front-end loader option which has the proven Bob-Tach system as standard - this enables users to switch easily between different Bobcat attachments to carry out multiple jobs easily,

delivering greater value and versatility for customers’ businesses. The CT2540 at Meadow Farm was supplied with Bobcat bucket and pallet fork attachments.

Daily maintenance is simple thanks to the one-piece engine cover. Bobcat’s extensive dealer network means that customers can count on a one-stop-shop for expert advice, timely service and parts availability for both machines and attachments. In addition to the superior uptime and serviceability features, each tractor is backed by a 24-month, 2000hour warranty.

WORKING ALONGSIDE BOBCAT MINI-EXCAVATORS

As mentioned above, before the CT2540 compact tractor arrived, the Ball family had already bought Bobcat E10z 1 tonne and E26 2.6 tonne mini-excavators from Grays Machinery. Talking about the Bobcat mini-excavators, Stephen said: “The E10z is very powerful for its size and we have been using it to complete three levels of landscaping on the garden in front of one of the old houses on the farm. The E26 has been very useful for larger landscaping work, including digging out the earth for the new pond on the property. Again this is intended to beautify the property and we are pleased with the way the E26 has performed in achieving the results we have.”

Stephen Ball added: “We are lucky to be very local to the Grays Machinery depot and benefit from the excellent service they provide. We are always talking and we may well add more Bobcat attachments to use with the CT2540 tractor and the mini-excavators.”

GRAYS MACHINERY - AUTHORISED BOBCAT DEALER

As the dedicated Bobcat Authorised Dealer for North and West Yorkshire in the UK, Grays Machinery has sole responsibility in its area for sales and service of the market-leading range of Bobcat skid-steer and compact track loaders, mini-excavators, telehandlers, compact wheel loaders, light compaction and attachments.

As well as the entire Bobcat range, Grays also offers a full selection of genuine Bobcat accessories and parts to support both new and existing Bobcat customers in its area. This is backed up by a stock of both brand new and second hand Bobcat machines for sale. Lobb + Partners sign new partnership agreement

International golf course architecture practice

Lobb + Partners (L+P) has been hired as a strategic partner for the design of multiple golf destinations across India with the PGA of America by Aivot Golf & Sports Management Private Limited, a newly-founded organisation created by a group of Indian/American investors.

Golf has a long history in India – the subcontinent’s first course, Royal Calcutta, was established in 1829, the first in the world outside Scotland (before golf had even spread to England or Ireland), and in the modern age, there are approximately 300 courses across the country. But large-scale golf development has been slow to take off in India, despite the historical and cultural fit, because fragmented land ownership has made it difficult for potential developers to acquire suitable properties. Aivot, along with its partners, has ambitions to fix this, and transform the development of golf in India.

After signing the partnership agreement at the newly opened PGA of America headquarters in Frisco, Texas, USA, L+P founder and principal Tim Lobb said: “As a team we aspire to create world-class golf courses, academies, and outstanding hotel and residential amenities alongside them. This is massively exciting for Indian golf, and we are overjoyed to be involved.”

The golf facilities will be PGA-branded, and are planned to include a mix of courses, academies and training centres, where Indians, whether previously exposed to golf or not, can develop their skills and enjoy the game. A substantial number of developments

are planned across the subcontinent, in cities and regions including Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR), Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru (Bangalore), Chandigarh and Lucknow. The Mumbai, Goa and Hyderabad projects are slated to be first up.

“The Goa project will be a resort – ideal for an area that is a major tourist destination – but some of the others, nearer to major cities, will be integrated golf communities,” says Lobb. “Aivot is a very forward thinking and talented

group aiming to achieve something new for golf in India.”

Aivot’s CEO Alok Tiwari, a leading entrepreneur in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), says: “Our plans are hugely ambitious – we are trying to create a hub for innovation and excellence in golfer development for India. As such, we naturally need partners who provide the absolute best quality support available, and we are confident that, in the PGA of America and Lobb + Partners, we have just that.”

The Crucial Role of Product Distributors

In a market where products journey from manufacturer to end user, distributors play an important role. These links of supply chains are pivotal in ensuring products reach their intended destinations efficiently, bridging the gap between manufacturers and consumers.

One of the most significant contributions of product distributors is the ability to extend market reach. Distributors possess the necessary networks, logistical capacity, and market insights to navigate all areas of the industry. Distributors have a duty to offer a wide range of products with a single thing in common; inarguable data backed performance. End users will each have different needs and preferences and distribution must ensure that all these needs are catered for.

Market efficiency is another critical area where product distributors shine. By optimising supply chains, managing stockholding, and co-ordinating deliveries, distributors streamline the movement of goods. This not only reduces wastage and excess inventory but also ensures that products are readily available, meeting consumer demands promptly. Essentially, distributors contribute to a smoother flow of goods, preventing bottlenecks and enhancing overall market performance.

In an era where e-commerce and digital marketplaces are reshaping shopping behaviours, distribution should continue to adapt to ensure that end users have several seamless routes to market, in addition to the traditional face to face template. This adaptability reinforces the importance of distributors as the link between traditional and modern landscapes.

Collier Turf Care truly knows what it means to be an effective distributor and believe that working closely with a few, select suppliers with whom we share an important set of core values, will result in each of our end users benefiting from the best customer experience possible.

Benefits of dealing with an effective distributor

A British manufacturing success story

Since 1986, SCH Supplies have been dedicated to building machinery specifically for groundskeepers. Their product range fits perfectly between domestic garden products and heavy industrial farm machinery. The TS98 lawn sweeper collector collects leaves, cut grass and lawn debris. It is robust in construction to withstand prolonged heavy use. A differential mechanism allows the sweeper to be manoeuvred in tight corners without the wheels “scuffing”. The differential mechanism also allows both ground wheels to drive the pick-up brushes giving it superior sweeping power. The height adjustment is simple, allowing it to be used on many different surfaces. The main drive is transmitted via strong metal gears. The large capacity solid plastic catcher is rot and tear-proof and straightforward to empty. Reversing onto the tipping heap can be difficult for some, but it is made easier with the TS98 as it only has two wheels in contact with the ground.

Cain Markings claim Aspen Fuel to be the perfect choice for a clean working environment

A

fter choosing Aspen Fuel to power their business just six months after opening in 2017, Cain Markings now claim to be firm believers of the product and the benefits it brings to the operator, their machinery and the surrounding environment. Fuelling a range of 2 and 4-stroke equipment for sports maintenance and line marking, Owner Sam Cain explains how efficiency and reliability have improved saving the team time and reducing costly repair bills!

Young GMA Board Member Sam Cain founded Cain Markings alongside his parents six years ago, the three-strong team providing a range of contract services to commercial customers in Hertfordshire and across the South East. “We were undergoing training on some new equipment with High Five Training who asked us whether we’d considered using Aspen Fuel” explains Sam. “The first thing I thought was the advantage of Aspen 2 being pre-mixed which eliminates the risk of getting the ratios wrong but the more I read, the more benefits I discovered, and it quickly became a no-brainer. We’ve never looked back.”

Being virtually free from sulphur, benzene and other solvents means Aspen Alkylate Fuel burns cleaner, reducing harmful emissions - important for many businesses, but a necessity for Sam who delivers a large number of contracts in schools and other enclosed environments. “The reduction in pollution and smell is a major plus and makes for a much more pleasant environment for the operator and those in and around the worksite.”

“We’re using Aspen in all of our petrol equipment including blowers, strimmers, hedge cutters and some of our ride-on artificial turf equipment.” He continues, “The majority of our work is conducted between the spring and autumn which sometimes means our kit will spend periods of the year in storage. Because Aspen is ethanol-free, we find that we can get equipment out after being dormant for months and it will still start first-time.”

“That extends more generally to the

overall health of our machines. We definitely see fewer engine-related issues and, when we do, as soon as we tell the mechanic we use Aspen they allbut eliminate it being a fuel problem.”

Sam purchases the Alkylate Fuel from Hertfordshire Garden Machinery, adding convenience and control to their supply. “We easily keep track of how much we’re using which helps us with budgeting etc.” He concludes, “We tell other contractors about the benefits and as soon as people try it, then see exactly what we mean… Even down to the can and automatic stopping nozzle which reduces spillages – it’s great!” www.aspenfuel.co.uk

“We initially hired-in the machine with a Tough Cut deck to work on the banks clearing scrub on our 9-hole golf course, but quickly appreciated the opportunity the versatility of the machine could provide across the estate,” he said.

“Unfortunately for our Golf team, the machine is used almost exclusively by the Grounds team and that’s simple down to its versatility. The Finishing deck was initially purchased for use on our formal lawns, as it leaves a very pleasing strip and presentation is very important here at Wellington.

“We used to cut our pitches with a ride-on cylinder mower, but the quality of cut from the Finishing deck is excellent and now we use it extensively on our winter pitches. The light footprint of the machine is another factor and we can continue our maintenance regimes, even in inclement weather.

“We are hosting the Women’s Rugby Under-18 Six Nations in April, which includes three back-to-back matches over 10 days. It’s a quick turnaround and we’ll cut the main pitch with the Ventrac and finish with our Dennis hand mowers.

“The design of this machine has been well thought through; maintenance is easy and the mounting system allows for a quick and easy exchange of attachments. Add to this the responsive support from our dealer, RT Machinery,

and we have a package that we are delighted with.”

Mark Dodd heads a team of 16 across three departments: Grounds, Gardens and Golf. He has been in his current role for the past two years, having joined Wellington in 2015. Prior to this he spent seven years at Benenden School and three years at Epsom College as Head of Grounds & Gardens.

Made for every slope….

Zero-Turns from Cub Cadet

Our large range means that both professionals and business owner alike can find their ideal zero-turn machine; whether they are looking for a serious bit of kit to mow steep slopes or to mow their customers large lawns… Cub Cadet have got you covered this year and every year going forward.

Z9 – OUR TOP OF THE RANGE PROFESSIONAL ZERO-TURN

The top of the range Z9 183id zeroturn, will fulfil all your commercial requirements.

With extremely wide double wheels, the Z9 has been developed to effortlessly tackle even the steepest slopes up to 25° / 46%.

The ability to control all four wheels with a steering wheel and steerable front wheels, an exclusive offering by Cub Cadet in the commercial sector, minimises the turf being churned up by the wheels or crabbing on banks. The patented Synchro Steer® technology means that even the less experienced operators can benefit from the ease of use and amazing manoeuvrability of this machine.

The Z9 provides greater hillside stability and enhanced traction on uneven terrain as well as mowing in straighter lines. It powers through the thickest grass in one pass at maximum speeds of up to 12mph meaning you can do the job quicker. The high lift Marbain blades with a blade tip speed up to 18,500 fpm and the 3” total blade overlap will ensure that you always get a tight consistent cut. The frame and axle on the Z9 floats as the machine moves, allowing the multireinforced steel deck to follow the shape of the terrain and avoid scalping. The cutting deck can be adjusted at the touch of a button.

The Kawasaki EFI engine provides the consistent power you need to get the job done and maximise your workday – reducing the downtime which could cost you both time and money. The petrol engine benefits from having reduced fuel usage, while the 2 x 34 litre tanks gives you the ability to operate all day.

Comfort is at the forefront of the machine’s design. Your operators can experience a smooth ride all day long thanks to the exclusive air-ride seat and isolated dampening system on the Z9 – meaning they are working in vibration-controlled comfort, lessening downtime for your business. Angled back adjustments, padded armrest and lumbar support give added protection.

Ideal for commercial users, the Z9 has everything and more that you would expect from a quality professional machine - ultimate performance, comfort and durability that delivers a fast, premium cut time and time again. You’ll also benefit from a warranty of 3 year or up to 1000 hours (whichever comes first) for commercial and private use.

Cobra set to showcase key products at Saltex and Groundsfest this year

Henton and Chattell has announced that it will be showcasing the Cobra brand at two upcoming events this year. The company will be returning to Saltex, held on 1st and 2nd November at the NEC in Birmingham, and is excited to announce its debut at GroundsFest, taking place at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire on 20th and 21st September.

The two events represent key industry opportunities to showcase the Cobra range to customers, dealers and stockists – as well as presenting invaluable chances to network, including directly with buyers.

Both Saltex and GroundsFest will also be a great chance for Cobra to demonstrate the capabilities of the Fortis cylinder mowers and lawn tractor ranges – both of which were launched earlier this year.

The Fortis range combines eight machines in one to give the ultimate package for creating picture perfect lawns, and are the first powered cylinder mowers to be launched by Cobra. It features four mowers, starting with a compact 14” model powered by a Loncin petrol engine, and then the 17”, 20” and 25” all featuring Briggs & Stratton engines for extra power for larger lawns.

What makes the Fortis machines the ultimate in lawncare however, is their ability to transform into seven other machines to ensure that lawns are immaculate and healthy. The Fortis sixbladed cassette can simply be removed and replaced with another accessory cassette in the range to switch its use. Other cartridges include a verticutter, scarifier, dethatcher, aerator, turf rake, lawn brush and 10-blade cassette.

For those with larger lawns to tend to, Cobra’s new range of ride-on lawnmowers

provides a high-quality, yet wallet-friendly option. Starting with compact LT62 rider models, each with a 24” cutting width and comfortable seat, these have a particular focus on manoeuvrability, allowing gardeners to flow and mow around their lawns.

Those with larger areas to mow will appreciate one of the other new six ride-on tractors available. With cutting widths ranging from 33” up to 42”, and choices again being manual and hydrostatic gear changing, as well as a twin cutting blade and the option to collect the cuttings, release them back to the ground or turn them to mulch. They also offer enhanced comfort with a padded seat and easy electric key starting.

To find out more about these new ranges, to see them demonstrated, meet the team and discover the difference a Cobra lawnmower can make, be sure to visit GroundsFest and Saltex this year. GroundsFest combines indoor business and education opportunities with outdoor demonstrations, providing an interactive experience which strengthens the connection between exhibitors and visitors. Saltex is Europe’s largest free turf management show, where visitors can hear from industry experts, and see the latest technologies and product development from over 400 leading brands. The Long Reach Irrigator

Introducing Mawdsleys’ Long Reach Irrigator (LRi) - the solution for irrigating large areas with the convenience of a portable system that does not require machinery to move it.

Paired with a single-phase pump, the LRi can deliver up to 5,000 litres per hour. If you have access to three phase power, greater flowrates are achievable.

The LRi is fed from a pump (either submersible or booster pump) and does not require mains power to the irrigator.  By varying the diameter of the nozzle on the irrigation head, the throw of the irrigator can be controlled, from 14 meters up to 37 metres.

Mawdsleys can offer a turn-key solution – supplying the LRi along with the tanks, pumps and distribution hoses, with onsite set up and commissioning support.

Mawdsleys Pump Services, Unit C2, Kingsland Trading Estate,

The LRI Premier offers many of the advantages of a large irrigation gun, but only requires a standard water supply, enabling broad areas to be watered from one place. It therefore gives many of the benefits of a permanent underground system, without the need for expensive installation. It can be left to run through the night and is designed to be left unattended.

Campey to have Industry Leading Machines in Action at GroundsFest

Campey Turf Care Systems is ready to take full advantage of the outdoor demonstration space at GroundsFest, with the Imants ShockWave, Dakota Turf Tender, Foley Company Air2G2 336 and Campey UNIRAKE© all prepared for action on stand OSA460.

The combination of outdoor and indoor stands has made GroundsFest the perfect event for Campey to give visitors valuable in-action insights into machines, how they work and the difference they can make.

Speaking about the inaugural event, Campey Turf Care Director Lee Morgado said: “GroundsFest is a new concept which puts the visitors at the forefront of the experience. One of those aspects is live demos, which makes the event more valuable to us as a company.

“As a machinery dealer and manufacturer, it is invaluable to show people exactly what the equipment

can do, how it operates, and the results they can expect. It also allows us to answer questions in greater detail which benefits our customers, and that is what it’s all about.”

Campey has chosen machines that encompass a range of maintenance practices for the show. For variable organic matter removal, the UNIRAKE© is the perfect choice. Users can adjust the severity of grooming to remove a varying amount of organic matter or simp-ly stand the sward up to encourage growth. Altering the severity of grooming is quick and easy and can be done in no less than 30 seconds.

The latest re-designed Imants ShockWave sporting its new livery, will be on show for wide area aeration, proving in person why it is the best linear compactor for heavily used areas where play can’t stop. It is designed to revitalise fine turf and sports fields by reliev-ing soil compaction, improving aeration, and removing surface water,

all whilst causing minimal surface disruption so play can resume quickly and safely.

In smaller or tighter areas, the Foley Air2G2 336 remains the industry’s finest pedestrian aerator. Instant results and the immediate continuation of play have set this machine apart since its release, making it a mainstay across most sports.

Completing the line-up of must-see machinery is the Dakota Turf Tender. The topdresser offers an impressive level of consistency with electric control boxes allowing users to set their width of spread an infinitely variable amount while ensuring that it can be changed and returned to that width at any time.

Campey’s team of product specialists will be demonstrating the machinery and will be available throughout the two days to provide advice, answer questions or have a catch-up over a coffee.

Irrigation Overhaul: Water Boosting by T-T Pumps

Redbourn Golf Club in St Albans, Hertfordshire, boasts a beautifully landscaped 18-hole course and shorter 9-hole course. In an effort to improve their on-site water harvesting, the club built a 7200m3 reservoir that allowed them to rely more heavily on rainfall for their greenkeeping needs.

The next phase of their water usage improvements included a complete irrigation system overhaul, reducing the need for mains water even further with effective water boosting.

T-T Pumps supplied a dual pump HiDro Boost, a UK manufactured clean water pressurisation set, to Redbourn Golf Club. The set was carefully specified to ensure that water could be pumped far enough and with sufficient pressure to reliably irrigate the course, with a flow rate of 20m³/hr and a maximum pressure of 8.8 bar.

The booster set featured two vertical multistage pumps and a variable speed drive that monitors system pressure and adjusts power consumption in real time to match the fluctuating demand for/supply of water; further improving

the courses water usage efficiency. A bespoke control panel was also designed and supplied to guarantee effective performance from the HiDro Boost. Additionally, a T-T Smart Digital Pressure Controller was installed as a fail-safe, providing additional dryrunning protection and pressure limit settings for the operator.

To maximise the new irrigation system’s reliability, the entire set was housed in a custom kiosk – with heating to prevent equipment from freezing in the winter and ventilation to prevent pumps and controls from overheating in the summer.

Contact our experts today to discuss a bespoke and comprehensive clean water booster set to suit your irrigation and groundskeeping needs.

Aiding Water Management for Performance and Consistency

We all know that turf management at times can be very stressful, but have you really thought about the stress that the grass plant endures at various times of the year, day and even minute?

Our aims as Turf managers are to mitigate these stress factors as much as possible whether they are

climatic or cultural to aid turf health, consistency and to allow the grass plant the best possible opportunity to provide the playing surfaces we require.

With the warmer weather now upon us one of our main focuses is on drought stress and moisture management. Using a wetting agent program is key

to maintaining optimum moisture levels within soils, maximising water availability whether from natural rainfall episodes or through automatic irrigation systems. The amount of available water to the plant will influence the plants ability to function normally and withstand both biotic and abiotic stress factors.

38 GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | September/October 2023
AERATION, IRRIGATION & DRAINAGE

Why is this so important? With water becoming a precious resource we must look at ways as turf managers to become more efficient in our water use. This can take many forms such as, looking at where our water comes from, how efficient our watering systems are and how efficient and effective our watering practices are. These are all important factors to use water more sustainably in the future and are best practice to help achieve your goals.

Consolidate Turf have been distributors of Aqua Aid wetting agents and surfactants in the UK since 2021. Initially working alongside existing Consolidate Turf customers many embraced Aqua Aid products and incorporated them into their turf management plans with strong growth in the number of customers year on year.

One of the main reasons for this growth is both the compatibility, longevity and

consistency that has been seen by customers out in the field. Compatibility with other products such as Consolidate Turf nutritional programs and Seaweeds which benefit from root uptake reduce the frequency of spraying applications, as does the longevity of the wetting agent (potentially up to 45 days between applications) due to it’s Multi-branched chemistry. However, the consistency of products such as Aqua Aid Hs and Ps measured using data compiled by moisture meter readings is where we are seeing outstanding customer feedback. The ability to provide superior

soil moisture uniformity not only across individual areas (such as an individual golf green) but also between areas on an entire site (from green to green) has been a regular occurrence with customers. This has reduced the number of man hours required for additional hand watering and also seen a reduction in the overall amount of water required across the site, alongside an increase in turf health due to reduced stress upon the plant.

In conclusion, water and moisture management are key both in short and long term Turf management strategies for all turf managers, to provide the surface quality that is required to expected both today and in the future. A proven wetting agent program will help you achieve this and become better custodians of one of our most precious resources going forward.

Terrain Aeration hitches a lift

Devonshire Homes has been committed to building high quality new homes across the West Country for more than thirty years. As a wholly owned subsidiary of London and Devonshire Trust, they have built over 1500 new homes and created over thirty new communities. One such development at Gwallon Keas, St Austell, is built on clay laden soil and they encountered a common problem facing new build developers. During construction, the use of heavy machinery can unavoidably cause compaction panning in areas designated to be the gardens of new houses. Even with land drainage installed and soil ripped, the compaction can reach such a depth normal treatment will not relieve it and provide the natural drainage needed. Consequently, with seven gardens of the new houses, severe waterlogging was occurring.

To rectify it, they were given what they called ‘some silly quotes’ with no guarantee the solutions would work. A ground works contractor recommended compaction specialists Terrain Aeration and Devonshire Homes decided to proceed with them. However, there was just one further problem, how to get the Terrain Aeration’s Tracker Terralift machine, compressor and aggregate backfill material into the gardens with limited access.

The solution was a crane presented itself with the arrival of a crane to lift bags of topsoil into the gardens. Whilst Terrain Aeration has had machines lifted before, they have never been this high. The fences between the seven gardens had been taken down, so the Tracker Terralift could move along the gardens to do its work. This comprises the machine’s JCB road hammer and probe driving down to a depth of one metre.

At this depth, a blast of compressed air is released to a maximum of 20Bar (280psi). This has the effect of fracturing the compacted soil and creating fissures. The treatment is

worked on a grid system at two metre spacings so the fissures interlink. As the probe withdraws, dried seaweed is injected which expands when it rains and keeps the fissure open to allow normal drainage. The probe holes are then backfilled with aggregate It is a solution Terrain Aeration has specialised in for over thirty years, treating areas ranging from back gardens to sports pitches, golf courses, bowling greens, race courses, parks, trees and public spaces. For Devonshire Homes, it provided a timely solution, albeit one which, on this occasion, needed a crane to carry it out.

THE BEFORE AND AFTER OF ONE METRE DEEP AERATION

Terrain Aeration’s long-term treatment reaches one metre deep where compressed air blasts the compaction. The soil is opened up for good drainage and a healthy sward with minimum disruption. We have been successfully deep aerating sports turf, bowling greens, golf courses, parks, racecourses, trees and gardens for over thirty years.

Pinewood Scout Centre lake reopened thanks to Otterbine

Otterbine’s Air Flo 3 underwater ‘bubbler’ diffused aeration system is the safe solution for Pinewood Scout Centre in Croydon, bringing its lake back to life and reopening it for water sports after a period of closure due to poor water quality.

When Jim Clements, site manager and scout leader, took on Pinewood Scout Centre last year he made it his mission to reform the site’s grounds, and fixing the lake that hosts the centre’s watersport activities was the first step. With the water quality of the lake being key to keeping the scouts safe, the Otterbine Air Flo 3 aerator was the ideal choice to get the lake back into action.

When it came time to find an aeration solution, Jim was after two key things: a system that is safe and can access the bottom of the lake to increase circulation and oxygenation. Otterbine ticked both boxes.

“The lake doesn’t have a natural river feed so is dependent on rainfall and groundwater,” Jim says. “Getting oxygen into the bottom of the lake is critical and the thing I like with the Air Flo is that all the electrics are on the bank. There’s absolutely nothing in the water that could pose a risk to people using the lake.”

Otterbine’s Air Flo 3 is an underwater ‘bubbler’ diffused aeration system that is designed to aerate and circulate the water without disturbing its natural surroundings. But best of all for Jim and the scouts at Pinewood, is that the diffuser requires no electricity or moving parts near the water which makes the system entirely safe for swimming and for all of the centre’s water based activities.

Since installing the Air Flo 3 system, Jim says: “The circulation and improved oxygenation of the water has massively improved the quality in terms of clarity. I think it’s the best it’s potentially ever been.”

Getting the lake back into a safe and working condition is a relief all round after Jim was forced to cancel the scout’s water activity programme last summer: “We had an exceptional drought so water temperature was high, water levels were dropping and conditions were perfect for an algae bloom. It went toxic very quickly and I had to shut the lake. We couldn’t do any activities until I was able to get it back under control,” Jim recounts.

The best way to prevent algal blooms is to increase oxygen levels in the water, and Otterbine has the highest Oxygen Transfer Rates on the market – a key factor in Jim’s choice.

“When I took the site on last year, I had no background in lake management, so it’s been a great learning experience. Sometimes you’re presented with a problem and you have to find the best solution. Reesink has been fantastic. Any technical advice or any questions that I had on parts or suitability, they were just a phone call away.”

Thanks to this Otterbine solution, the Pinewood lake is ready to be used for a summer programme of activities, but it’s not just the scouts that are benefitting from the new system. Jim says: “We’re seeing a lot more fish and amphibians in the lake, and the marginal plants are all really thriving too.”

Cleaning up the lake area is just the first step in Jim’s grand plan: “Now the lake is in a stable condition the next stage is the surrounding woodland and making it far more accessible. Where previously it was overgrown, we’re removing a lot of the Rhododendron and replacing it with indigenous broadleaf species, making the whole site far more ecologically viable.”

To find out more about how the Otterbine range of aerators and fountains can help your lakes and ponds, contact Reesink on 01480 226800, email info@reesinkturfcare.co.uk or visit reesinkturfcare.co.uk.

Using Attraxor for consistency and ease of maintenance

AGolf Course Manager from a deluxe golf and spa resort nestled in the scenic Cheshire countryside explains why they use Attraxor to keep their turf green, clear of Poa annua, and easily maintainable.

Golf course manager John Quinn, based at The Mere Golf Resort and Spa near Knutsford, has been using Attraxor for three seasons and has shared the benefits he’s seen on the golf course.

The Mere offers a deluxe four-star hotel experience with a spa and a scenic 18-hole lakeside Championship

Golf Course, encompassed by mature trees and extensive vegetation. The 81-room hotel is a popular retreat for avid golfers, with many posting their experience on Trip Advisor complimenting the greens as being “smooth, fabulous, and well kept.”

John discussed the reasons he began to use Attraxor at The Mere: “After hearing lots of good stories about Attraxor, I decided to try it with the hope it would make the greens growth consistent and reduce clippings. We also wanted to suppress the growth of Poa annua seedheads to keep the greens smooth.”

Attraxor has been proven to regulate growth effectively as part of a wellmanaged turf strategy, meaning the hard work put into the upkeep of the grounds lasts longer. The active product within Attraxor is Prohexadione-calcium, which inhibits the gibberellic acid pathway, resulting in reduction of turf height and biomass. Root growth is promoted through Attraxor to aid strength, whilst turf colour and quality are maintained.

John said: “I use Attraxor every 21 days on our greens and it has lowered the mowing maintenance of the greens and complemented our existing efforts of

better uptake from our overseeding work!

“Introducing Attraxor to our maintenance regime has meant we spend less time mowing the greens. Having such good control over the growth rates means the option is always there to give the greens a break for a day without any mechanical input if we feel it would benefit. Attraxor has given me so much control over the golf course, it has allowed for consistent and quality greens coverage with minimal growth which is smooth and develops at the same pace as all the other greens.”

greens upkeep. During periods of high growth, we alternate days mowing and rolling to reduce plant stress. Attraxor gives me better control of growth rates. Throughout the 21-day period, a more uniform sward is possible each week. I’ve found that the Poa annua seedhead suppression qualities are superior to Trinexapac-ethyl products. If any seedheads do pop up, they are remarkably smaller and leave a much finer putting surface.”

John also discussed the improvement of quality he is seeing within the grass, saying: “We have been overseeding with creeping bentgrass for three years now, and in conjunction with our use of Attraxor, we have seen a much

Centurion Club thank George Browns and Baroness for support during successful LIV Golf Tournament

Having been machinery partners to Hertfordshire’s Centurion Club for a number of years, George Browns recently played a pivotal role in the successful delivery of the LIV Golf League London event in early July. The supply of additional equipment and service training was the result of six months of intricate planning between Course Manager Andrew Garland, Stuart Gray from Baroness and David Fisher, Area Sales Manager at George Browns’ Chesham branch. The result, says Andrew, was “outstanding support and a perfect playing surface from start to finish!”

Nestled into rural countryside to the west of St Albans, the Centurion Club delivers a mixture of open, undulating holes combined with challenging woodland-lined holes, delivering a feeling of maturity to the club which opened to members and the public in 2013. “Our relationship with George Browns

was cemented roughly four years ago after we fell victim to the theft of our tees mowers” explains Andrew. “David lent us their demonstration Baroness mowers to get us out of a really tricky situation at the time, and the team ended up liking the mowers that much that we purchased them! Since then, any time we’re in the market for a new machine, we’ll get David in and nine times out of ten, that’s the machine we purchase.”

Andrew and his team of 12 currently run a fleet of Kubota tractors and RTV utility vehicles, three fairway and four tees mowers from Baroness along with a Redexim TopBrush and Verti-Drain – all supplied by the Chesham depot of George Browns.

“We started preparing for the LIV Golf League event in January. I sat down with Stuart and David to draw up a list of what we’d need – not just extra equipment but ensuring that the machinery already in the

shed was performing as it should. My team received excellent service training in the run-up to July to get the fairway mowers in tip-top condition, and my mechanic was then advised on the correct way to grind them and set them up.”

In addition to training, George Browns also loaned the club a triple greens mower, four extra Baroness hand tee mowers, a rough mower and an aprons machine. “We had six additional team members from the Turf Institute of South Africa and a further ten volunteers who all had to get stuck in and straight out with the equipment. All of them found the machines easy to use and were particularly impressed by the quality of cut.” Andrew concludes, “All of this, together with the support provided throughout the event, helped the whole tournament run smoothly.”

Commenting on the relationship, David Fisher says, “It has been a real privilege to work closely with our franchises to maximise the knowledge we could provide to Andrew and his team in what promises to be a celebratory decade year for the club. All at George Browns congratulate Centurion Club on the tournament, and we look forward to continuing to build on this success.”

Stuart Gray adds, “It’s been great working with Andy and his fantastic team and supporting them through the LIV tournaments in both 2022 and 2023, cementing the level of support Baroness and its dealers are proud to deliver to the industry.”

Ultra-low noise, low vibration, user friendly and super low CO2 footprint, the new range of mowers are helping users towards the carbon neutral goal.

Electrifying Dennis E-Series at GroundsFest

“ 58 GROUNDSFEST SHOW PREVIEW

ennis will be showcasing a wide-range of pedestrian battery-powered products on stand 50 in hall 2 at GroundsFest 2023.

Since its launch, the Dennis E-Series has taken the industry by storm standing out from the competition in terms of power, battery-range and performance.

Reliable and long lasting, the exciting Dennis E-Series is a range of battery powered mowers that are no compromise alternatives to its popular range of petrol machines. Ultra-low noise, low vibration, user friendly and super low CO2 footprint, the new range of mowers are helping users towards the carbon neutral goal.

GroundsFest visitors can expect to see a selection of products in the E-Series range such as:

ES-860

Users of the Dennis G860 cylinder mower will no doubt see familiarities in the new ES-860.

This 34” battery powered turf management system delivers maximum versatility and the range of 13 interchangeable cassette options provide a solution to many day-today maintenance tasks. The power of the battery system ensures the machine is capable of cutting at least 3-4 pitches on a single charge or verticutting a full pitch without anxiety. Furthermore, current G860 cassettes will also fit the ES-860.

ES-34R

The ES-34R rotary mower has twin contra rotating blades with the height of cut controlled by an easy to use ‘click’ system. Suction and blade speed can be adapted to meet the most challenging collection conditions. The mower is also available with optional front wheels, smooth or wiele roller, and has excellent sight lines.

ES-36

Based on the Dennis Premier, the ES-36 provides a perfect finish every time and capable of cutting 2-3 pitches on a single charge. The powerful battery system allows the addition of a trailer seat to be attached and still achieve a minimum of 20km of cutting. A uniquely developed micro adjuster makes it very easy to set the bottom blade to cylinder.

ES-510

This new mower is based on the Dennis FT510 – which is, historically, the company’s most popular machine. With a choice of 12 interchangeable cassettes, the ES-510 is capable of scarifying down to -10mm. Ideal for fine turf it has the power to cut 4-5 bowling greens or approximately 10km on a single charge.

ES-22 ULTRA

Users of the Dennis Razor Ultra will be familiar with this machine, which features an ultra-short wheelbase for undulating surfaces. Using a 7 or 11 bladed cutting cylinder and groomer reel, this 560mm (22”) battery mower produces a quality of cut which provides an ultra-fine finish on bowling greens, golf greens and tees, and cricket pitches.

ES-26

Easy to use, superb balance, control, and easy pull back for accurate alignment of next run are just some of the features of the ES-26. With a 26” cutting width, this mower is available with a standard front roller for maintaining fine turf sports surfaces such as golf greens and tees.

The E-Series features a robust LCD keypad screen which provides the operator with a multitude of information options including speed, clip rate, service checks, lifetime running reports and battery information. The mowers take just 2-3 hours for an ultra-fast full battery recharge.

STIHL TO EXHIBIT AT GROUNDSFEST 2023

Stand OSA 30, Stoneleigh Park (20-21 September)

STIHL will be showcasing its full AP System range of professional battery tools at the first GroundsFest 2023 exhibition, highlighting how cordless tools can meet the varying needs of landscapers and groundscare teams.

Visitors to the STIHL stand will be able to see the new PS 3000, STIHL’s first portable 230V power supply, providing users with a quiet, low maintenance and emission-free alternative to petrol-powered generators. Weighing only 19.8kg and boasting a 3.6kW power output, the new PS 3000 offers a high power-to-weight ratio and is one of the most powerful portable power supply units in its weight class.

Other new tools available for professional users to get their hands on at the exhibition will be the BGA 300 backpack blower, HSA 100 cordless hedge trimmer, and the updated MSA 220 C-B chainsaw.

The BGA 300, STIHL’s first cordless backpack blower for professional users, offers high performance and a significantly less disruptive sound thanks to its innovative STIHL Noise Reduction System (NRS). Thanks to the STIHL

NRS, the BGA 300 produces fewer high pitch frequencies often associated with cordless blowers, meaning operation is much more pleasant and less intrusive for bystanders.

In addition, The HSA 100 boasts a 60cm double-sided, double-edged cutting blade, which offers improved cutting performance due to the large cutter spacing of the blades, whereas the updated MSA 220 C-B is a robust and powerful cordless chainsaw, ideal for felling small trees, pruning and cutting to length.

meters, the ET Lander is very compact. Thanks to the power steering, the short turning radius of 4.40 meters and 360 ° visibility, it goes anywhere. The autonomy of the vehicle lasts for a full working day – without noise pollution, can transport loads of up to 940kgs and can also tow up to 750kgs.

The Etesia Bahia M2EL – the world’s first 100% electric professional ride-onmower with grass collection, is powered by a 48V, 100Ah lithium battery. This enables users to get up to 4 hrs 30 mins of action before it needs recharging.

A pocket-size ride-on mower, just 0.82 m wide and 1.98 m long, the Etesia electric Bahia features an incredibly tight turning circle. It nips into every nook and cranny

and can be easily transported. With its low centre of gravity, the Etesia electric Bahia’s 33/67 weight distribution on the front/rear axles make it a highly stable mower that masterfully copes with slopes.

It is also highly economical – the electric Bahia’s running costs are £0.35 against £3.57 for the petrol version and there are the obvious reduced maintenance costs – such as no belt, no filters, and no engine oil.

Visitors to GroundsFest will get the chance to see these two products in action in a demonstration area in Ring B.

As always, the company’s knowledgeable staff will be available throughout the two days at GroundsFest to advise and assist.

The TinyLineMarker Sport

Stoke City FC save hundreds of man hours marking out their training pitches with robot

It’s been nine months since Stoke City FC took delivery of their GPS guided robot line marker from Origin Amenity Solutions, the TinyLineMarker (TLM) Sport.

Andy Jackson, Grounds Manager for the football club says, “we are more than happy. It has been a fantastic buy for the club.”

Andy who has been at Stoke City FC for the last 27 years manages a team of 12 grounds staff who are trained to use the Tiny Sport. He adds, “using the robot is so easy, it makes life so much simpler and helps us manage the business much easier and more efficiently.”

The club has nine grass training pitches, “before the robot we used a spray line marker and it took two people half a day to initial mark each pitch, the TLM

Sport does the same job in 20 minutes. This is a massive saving in time and resources which enables us to get more jobs complete at the same time. In the summer we will be overmarking the pitches two or three times a week, the labour savings we are making, to deploy elsewhere, are just incredible.”

TinyMobileRobots is marketed and distributed exclusively in the UK by Origin Amenity Solutions which brings together four leading industry names - Headland Amenity, Rigby Taylor, TurfKeeper.com and Symbio.

Packed with a range of innovative features, the TLM Sport is a GPS guided robot designed to make line marking projects as reliable, streamlined, and effortless as possible. Its low weight enables it to be lifted easily by one person, its small size means

it can fit into a regular sized car and be transported from one location to another easily.

Andy adds, “It is important for the club to stay at the forefront of technology. Robots for line marking is definitely visionary and the way forward. It really isn’t going to take very long for the robot to pay for itself.”

“What I really like about the robot is the flexibility it offers; it does so many things. For example if one of our training coaches wanted training grids, we can produce that really quickly and easily –it’s just no problem at all.”

The football club also use the Impact paint supplied by Origin Amenity Solutions, “I’m really happy with the paint. It works perfectly with the robot. It produces nice bright white lines and

66 GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | September/October 2023 PITCH & LINE MARKERS

doesn’t transfer to the grass via the wheels and rollers from machinery. I am very impressed.”

Andy continues, “Swapping to Impact paint is also saving us a significant amount of money. We used to use around seven litres of paint to mark a pitch but switching to the Impact paint and with the constant speed of the robot has reduced this to around four litres. At the height of summer we overmark all our training pitches a total of around 20 times a week. For one week alone this saves us in the region of 40 litres of paint. That’s a lot of paint and a lot of money over the course of a year!”

The Origin Amenity Solutions team offer onsite training, maintenance, and general advice. Andy concludes “The communication, support, and advice I have received from Glen Howard at Origin Amenity Solutions has been excellent. I wasn’t convinced by robotic line marking in the past but

I’m glad I had a demo from Glen – its revolutionised the way we carry out our pitch marking.”

Free demonstrations are being offered across the UK. To book or enquire visit www.tinymobilerobots.com/ tinymobilerobots-uk/

Calderdale Council Keeps Line Marking on Track with Turf Tank

esource management, time and consistency were all factors that needed tackling at Calderdale Council, and the Turf Tank One has addressed them all.

Senior Technical Officer Samantha Ward had retirements in her line marking team, which meant losing over 60 years of experience. Temporarily, Samantha utilised members of the gardening group to mark out the running tracks and football, rugby and rounders pitches needed in the borough, but she was always looking for a solution.

“I thought there must be a better way to utilise resources that didn’t involve additional recruitment and the time it takes to provide full training,” Samantha explained.

PITCH & LINE
R
MARKERS

“Our line marking team were impressed by the time that Turf Tank would save and the way you could plot the pitches. We knew from there that our gardeners could focus more on their traditional jobs whilst people like me who are technically minded could work with the Turf Tank robot.”

Redistributing resources had an immediate positive impact on the team, with timesaving and line accuracy next in line. Savile Park is one of the Council’s busiest pitches, with athletics, football and rounders all hosted at the site.

Previously it took staff an entire day to line a 400m running track, whereas now it takes less than two hours.

“ Savile Park, is a multiple-game site, and it’s much easier to mark out now. Once we set a template on the Turf Tank, we can pretty much set up each sport, football, running tracks, rugby, and rounders, and let it go.

“ Every time it goes out, it’s in the right space, and it’s accurate.

“Our time is precious, and the running

track we’ve marked out today now takes just under two hours with one person and the Turf Tank, so we have pretty much smashed the time in terms of the full day. Because of that, the Turf Tank has recovered a lot of time for our staff to do other things on the sports pitches and around the borough.

“We have also saved time with initial marking of football pitches, probably a week and a half every time we mark out, which is invaluable time.” www.golfbusinessnews.com

The third INFINICUT® is the charm for Norwich City Football Club

They say that good things tend to come in threes, which is certainly the case for Norwich City FC following the recent addition of a third INFINICUT® SM34 rotary mower to their fleet at Carrow Road. Giving the team of three outstanding versatility and quality of finish, Head of Grounds Adam Grantham adds that the delivery in June 2023, has also significantly improved efficiency when it comes to that all-important post-match cut.

Adam’s first INFINICUT® delivery came shortly after taking the reins in January 2022, following an assessment of the current fleet shared across both the stadium and club’s Lotus Training Centre. “I’d used INFINICUT’s at my previous venue and had always been impressed with their performance” he explains. “I put in a request for two SM34 rotary mowers which the club backed, and these proved to be a brilliant investment. The pair gave us a vastly improved battery-life and quality of finish compared to our previous units.”

Used initially and primarily for debris clearance and the post-match clean-up cut, Adam could see the possibilities a third SM34 could bring to the efficiency of operations, with the latest machine delivered in time for the start of the new season. “The trio have become a big part of our preparations as we move through the week, particularly during periods where we want to let the pitch ‘be’ for a little while - cutting with the rotaries to remove quantity ahead of a final cut with the cylinders.” He continues, “They’re bullet proof in

their build and the set up couldn’t be simpler, literally one spanner and you’re away!”

Adopting many of the principles of their renowned collection of cylinder mowers, the SM34 from INFINICUT® delivers millimetre precision adjustment and strong vacuum performance for powerful debris removal, cleanness of cut and an immaculate finish – driven by a long-lasting and reliable 105Ah lithium-ion battery.

“Post match training is quite a regular thing here at Norwich so frequently the team and I are having to wait close to an hour following the end of a match before we can get on and cut. This extra machine not only knocks 20 minutes off the job but now means we can each go a bit slower to achieve a really clean, crisp finish.” He concludes, “Normally you get speed or finesse with a machine, but rarely both. With the SM34’s we can tick those boxes to the benefit of my team and the pitch quality alike.”

Profitable Soil Preparation with the Turf Teq Power Rake

When preparing soil for turf, grass seed or wild flowers, what’s the best piece of equipment to use?

A rotavator will churn up the ground, bringing stones and debris to the top, leaving four of five inches of lumpy, soft soil that will need to be re-consolidated and top-raked in order to achieve a firm, stone-free surface. No matter what compaction method is used, the job will be time-consuming and the sub-soil will rarely be as firm as it was previously. Consequently, it is liable to slump when the first serious fall of rain comes along, and the client will expect the contractor to return to site to rectify the problem.

The profitable alternative is to use the Turf Teq Power Rake. It has twice the working width of a rotavator and is capable of a much faster working

speed. The machine tills only the top layer, so doesn’t disturb the sub-soil. First, angle the rake box left or right to work the stones into windrows for easy collection and disposal. Whilst doing this, the Rake is already starting to grade the site and produce a fine tilth. Next, pivot the head straight and drive it across the area in two or three directions in order to complete the job. Because the machine tills only the top layer (max 25mm), the soil is immediately ready for use. You don’t have to re-consolidate it as you would if you used a rotavator.

You now have a level, rough-raked site ready to accept turf. If you are seeding,

you just need to touch in the wheel marks with a hand rake.

The Turf Teq Power Rake will also:

• facilitate repair of an existing lawn without lifting the turf

• spread topsoil evenly

• break up compacted gravel areas or paths, golf buggy paths and similar surfaces prior to re- levelling.

Manufactured in USA, the Turf Teq machine has hydrostatic drive; hardened steel rotor teeth with tungsten tips; diff lock; simple controls and a Honda GXV390 petrol engine.

Lord’s Cricket Ground Selects Sustainable Fencing Solution for Renovation Project

As the UK’s summer of cricket fever continues, Lord’s Cricket Ground, the most famous cricket venue globally, has made investments in sustainable fencing options. The aim is to ensure an environmentally-conscious as well as action-packed season.

With its rich history dating back to 1787, architectural significance, and unmatched glamour, Lord’s Cricket Ground has always strived to maintain its world-class facilities while preserving its unique charm. Over the years, the ground has undergone various developments to enhance sightlines, increase capacity, and improve accessibility, all while maintaining architectural excellence.

PERFECTLY PLANNED

With a rich history of carefully planned developments, Lord’s recently embarked on a renovation project focused on enhancing sustainability and replacing deteriorated fencing.

Given the ground’s prestigious status, every development at Lord’s is executed with meticulous planning and attention to detail. Previous improvements have aimed at enhancing sightlines, reducing restricted view seats, increasing capacity, and improving accessibility. An eco-conscious redevelopment

Recognising the importance of environmental stewardship, Lord’s

Cricket Ground has been proactive in improving its eco-credentials. From 2014 to 2017, a series of measures were implemented to enhance energy usage and make the grounds more environmentally friendly. These included the installation of ground source heat pumps, solar panels, and ‘living’ green walls. The construction of the ground’s roof incorporated advanced timber technology, prioritising the use of sustainable and replaceable materials.

FENCING THAT FITS THE BILL

With sustainability as a top priority for all developments, it was essential to select a fencing company that shared the same ethos and offered products that met green requirements. The existing fencing in front of the Thomas

Lord Suite had suffered from rot and fallen into disrepair, with panels either collapsed or leaning.

The Thomas Lord Suite is a key feature of Lord’s Cricket Ground, often used for prestigious events. Its design emphasises natural light, making it crucial to balance privacy without compromising on the amount of natural light entering the suite. To address these requirements, 13.5 metres of Jacksons’ Venetian Hit and Miss fence panels were specified as the replacement for the old fencing. These modern slatted fence panels offer elegance, privacy, and the ability to allow light through. They are widely regarded as a “luxury fence panel” and are popular among garden designers for their contemporary style

76 GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | September/October 2023 SPORTS PITCHES

and space-enhancing properties. Given Lord’s wide and open space, wind resistance was a significant consideration for the new fencing. Hit and miss fencing proved to be the ideal solution as it allows wind to filter through the gaps, reducing strain on the panels and posts. Installed by Garden Fencing London, one of Jacksons Fencing’s Approved Installers, the panels were securely attached to the timber slotted posts to enhance stability and deter unauthorised access.

DESIGNED FOR DURABILITY

In line with Lord’s preference for renewable materials, Jacksons Fencing responsibly source and treat all timber used in the fencing with its unique Jakcure® preservation process. This process ensures that the timber is kiln dried and pressure treated, offering exceptional durability and longevity. As a result, all timber products come

with a 25-year guarantee against rot and insect attack, reducing the lifetime cost and minimising the environmental impact of used fencing going to landfill. Brailsford finds Berthoud knapsacks weed out the competition

Brailsford Golf Centre is a thriving proprietary hub skirting the beautiful Peak District, which is at the cutting edge of sustainable practices.

Shortlisted for England Golf’s Club of the Year earlier in 2023, the centre relies on a tight team of three greenkeepers to keep presentational and playability standards high.

Once a field sports venue before its redevelopment as a 9-hole course, target golf and practice areas, Brailsford’s heavily rural aspect demands year-round commitment to weed control.

“Several areas require us to handrather than boom spray,” says course manager Ben Archer. “We control thistles between the 2nd and 3rd holes as well as along the 4th and 5th, through pine woodland, spraying fringes of the greens and approaches and keeping weed outbreaks in check,” he explains.

“There’s also our car parks, paths and gravel tracks across the course to keep free of unwanted growth.”

“I like the robustness - it stands up well against others available - and you can spray at a comfortable height. The telescopic lance is very handy for hard to reach areas like the six-foot-deep ditch running along the course.”

Ben’s been trialling a Pro Comfort knapsack sprayer from Berthoud - sister brand to popular make Cooper Pegler - and likes what he’s used. “I found it comfy with plenty of adjustability for differing body sizes,” he reports.

“The cushioned straps, including the chest and belly belts, allow the weight of the knapsack to be spread in a way that limits forces acting on the shoulders and back.

The ability to switch the spray handle from one side of the knapsack to the other is another welcome feature. “I’m left handed but years of pumping with my left means I’ve gained a skill set with that hand.

“If I’m carrying an injury, I can pump with my right hand then hold the trigger with my left. That’s simply done. The trigger itself is also ergonomically designed, making operation a one finger exercise.”

Ben adds: “I like the robustness - it stands up well against others available - and you can spray at a comfortable height. The telescopic lance is very handy for hard to reach areas like the six-foot-deep ditch running along the course.”

Under their sustainability strategy, Brailsford limits its applIcation of treatment liquids, Ben explains. “When winter spraying, we spot treat any disease outbreak on greens, rather than blanket covering, as we don’t want to spray unnecessarily.”

Maintenance is always a priority, Ben says. “We strip down sprayers twice a year, washing and soaking knapsacks thoroughly and clearing filters of anything that might block them.”

Sports pitch renovations

rom premier league to grassroots clubs - this period marks the most critical time of the year for sports pitch managers, as it presents an occasion to reset for any modifications from the previous year.

Sports pitch renovations are essential to maintain a high-quality playing surface for athletes to perform at their best. Renovations can range from simple repairs to complete overhauls of the playing surface, depending on the level of wear and tear, weather conditions, and usage.

The renovation process usually involves several stages, starting with an assessment of the pitch’s current condition. This can include analysing the drainage system, soil structure, grass cover, and any damage to the surface. The results of this assessment will determine the necessary steps to take, such as aerating, fertilizing, reseeding, or replacing the playing surface altogether.

The renovation process can be timeconsuming and costly, but it is a worthwhile investment in the long run. Speak to our specialist Winter Sports Area Manager for free technical advice on topdressing, overseeding, nutrition and pitch marking. Let’s be mindful of the young plant when adding nutrition and ensure that the plant can utilize most of the applied nutrients. This approach not only saves costs but also minimizes environmental harm.

Along with mowing, an essential operation at this time of year, the following end of season operations will be carried out:

• Aeration to de-compact the pitch.

• Repair worn areas.

• Top dressing.

• Seeding / Overseeding.

• Pre-seeding fertiliser application.

• Scarification (where required).

• Line Marking

• Irrigation (where required).

Obtaining the correct products for your sports turf is important. For further information regarding the various approaches and products to use, call Craig Housley on 07546 307052 or email craig@ eastridingturfcare.co.uk

Responsible fertiliser use for a greener future

n the realm of modern groundskeeping, the pursuit of vibrant, healthy landscapes intertwines with the responsibility to care for our environment. As we approach the Autumn/Winter season, we, at GreenBest Limited, recognise the imperative role that fertilisers play in achieving both quality sports turf landscapes and sustainable practices.

CONSCIOUS CHOICES

At the heart of responsible fertiliser application lies a commitment to precision. We champion the notion of not using more than necessary. Overapplication can lead to nutrient runoff, pollution of water bodies, volatilisation of chemicals into the atmosphere and a compromised ecosystem. Our Velvit fertilisers, meticulously crafted to deliver precise nutrient doses, exemplify our dedication to promoting efficient usage. By adhering to the principle of ‘less is more’, we can optimise plant growth while safeguarding the environment.

EMBRACING NATURE’S WISDOM

Organic and controlled-release fertilisers stand as champions of sustainability. Our Organo-mineral fertilisers, including the Onyx, YUCCA, Aminaid and Velsea ranges, epitomise this approach. These formulations harmonise the benefits of organic matter with carefully balanced mineral nutrients. By releasing nutrients gradually, these fertilisers foster sustained growth, reduce leaching, and fortify soil structure. The result is a landscape that thrives in symmetry with nature.

BESPOKE FERTILISER FORMULATION

Responsible fertiliser use is a commitment. Through our Bespoke

Fertilisers service we can bring together custom manufacturing, advanced ingredients, own-brand packaging, and worldwide shipping. Tailoring your fertilisers to match your soil reserves and the needs of your turf will avoid an excess of any one component, thus reducing cost and environmental harm. Our technical advice will support you in creating your unique products, adopting precisiondriven application methods, and embracing organic and controlledrelease fertilisers.

EMPOWERMENT THROUGH EDUCATION

As we navigate the path towards responsible fertiliser use, knowledge is power. The GreenBest Academy is becoming our hub of education, equipping professionals, and enthusiasts with the tools to make informed choices. Our Academy hosts

courses and free webinars presented by our FACTS-qualified sales team. We’re giving consumers an insight into fertiliser application techniques, new products, and seasonal updates. By empowering ourselves with knowledge, we pave the way for a greener and more vibrant future.

airter® the sports turf care of the future with active aerification

Unique in the world, the airter® loosens the turf layers homogeneously from 8 cm to a depth of more than 24 cmwith adjustable compressed air and in one continuous operation. 14 specially developed injection lances with different types of nozzles inject up to one million litres of air per working process into the ground of a football pitch. With regard to water infiltration, an improvement can be measured immediately on the treated surfaces. Even football pitches that tend to become waterlogged due to an unfavourable structural quality in terms of material selection and grain size distribution; soil properties as well as an unsuitable choice of substrate could be “defused” by working with the airter® with 2 to 9 bars of air pressure.

The airter as a maintenance machine can sustainably and extremely loosen

strongly compacted sports turf soils with compressed air. It reaches all rooted areas and loosens the turf base layer there horizontally and homogeneously. These are the facts:

- Proven soil loosening of the turf base layer of at least 30%, the soil loosening lasts up to 4 weeks

- At the same time a 23% increase in lawn clippings was measured

- As well as up to 48% better water drainage in the soil

- Also the unwanted grubs (May and June beetles) and the Tipula larvae can be controlled

- Effectively - with the airter and biologically with compressed air to 100%.

- The oxygen from the aeration provides stronger roots and vital plant growth

- No more black layer!

High work rate of Wiedenmann Terra Spike key for contractor Sports Turf N E

arlington contractor, Sports Turf North East, credits their Wiedenmann Terra Spike GXi8 HD as being central to their maintenance operations at over 150 sites across Cumbria, Yorkshire, and Humber.

Director, Alastair Briggs, says deep aeration is vital for any quality sports surface and one of the first things they recommend when asked how best to keep a pitch playable for longer during the season.

“Whatever the code, be it rugby, football, cricket and whether it’s a professional or amateur club, or a school or local authority project, every pitch benefits from reducing compaction and letting air and nutrients through its profile.

“If a pitch is spiked regularly, rootzone health improves and ultimately less surface water gathers.

“We like the GXI8 HD because it is so smooth and powers through lots of work effortlessly. It has dual-belt drive with a balanced crankshaft, a sprungloaded headstock – the VibraStop – and PowerPacks as part of the anti-shock anti-vibration system, all built into the machine. All this protects the tractor and, crucially, the operator, important if a team member is in the cab for a large part of every day.

“During Autumn, once the playing season is underway, we spend a lot of time on aeration for clients. Typically, on a rugby or football pitch, we can be looking to punch holes down to 250 mm with 18 mm tines. Speed and a top-quality finish are important. We push hard to get pitches aerated for the run up to Christmas, ahead of periods of increased rainfall.

“By doing regular aeration, clients enjoy better-quality playing surfaces. Some clubs can now see the benefits

commercially, too; fewer alterations to their fixtures calendar means gate receipts and takings at the bar are less impacted.

“Essentially, the primary goal of STNE is to get grass roots pitches to a higher level. As a relatively new business ourselves, we are enjoying building these relationships and showing that maintaining healthy turf goes hand-in-hand with the more widely acknowledged aspects of club life.”

Tournament Support Key Aspect of ProSport UK’s Foley Success at Open Championship Venues

here are few greater events in golf that match The Open. For many greenkeepers, it is the pinnacle of their careers, but to make it a success, tireless work goes on behind the scenes to have mowers ready for cutting each day.

When the 151st Open begins in the third week of July, every Toro and John Deere mower used at Royal Liverpool will be ground by a Foley under the expert eye of ProSport UK’s Ian Robson. More than ever, speed and accuracy are crucial during a tournament, and it’s then the 633 ACCU-Pro with ACCU-Touch 3 comes into its own.

The machines come with an automated computer system that provides a step-by-step tutorial for new technicians and a quicker setup and spin grind feature for the more experienced operators. You input the details of the unit you’re working on, and it automatically spin or relief grinds to completion. Preprogrammed spin speeds, relief torque, and in-feeds are only a few of the features found in the ACCU-Touch 3 system that ensures efficiency and guarantees a quality grind with every use.

With Foley grinders at four Open Championship venues, Ian knows the importance of tournament support and the difference it makes. “An Open Championship is a unique event that calls for a team effort to make it a success,” Ian explains. “In my experience, it’s an intricately planned but high-pressure environment, and we’re there to make sure everything runs smoothly.

“We want to ensure every unit that goes on the course is at its best because the quality of cut is so important to turf health and the presentation. Using the ACCU-Pro 633 means we can turn around the units quickly and efficiently while always guaranteeing the best quality, and that is the key thing. Course conditions are the biggest variable during a tournament, and we can very easily adjust our grinding to suit what the course team needs.

“Royal Liverpool has had to wait because of the Open rota being put back a year and the redevelopment of the 17th hole, but the work they’ve put into hosting this Championship will be worth it, and we’re proud to be a part of it.”

92 GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | September/October 2023 GREENKEEPING
T

Being England’s second oldest seaside links comes with a lot of history. Royal Liverpool was the second English course to host the Open Championship in 1897 and hosted the prestigious competition a further nine times before a 39-year gap between 1967 and 2006 when Tiger Woods won the tournament before Rory McIlroy won his first eight years later in 2014.

The club has far from stood still since then, with their new 17th hole aiming to make a name for itself among golfs standout par-3s. Using the Dee Estuary as a backdrop, the well-guarded elevated green could well be a decision maker on who lifts the Claret Jug along with the redesigned over 600-yard par-5 18th.

OPEN QUALITY

Royal Liverpool is the second successive Open host to use Foley, following St Andrews, who used the American-made machines during the 150th Open.

Customer support ranks highly at the home of golf, with the personal touch ranking as highly as the ability to provide solutions for Head of Maintenance Lani Togi.

“When it comes to buying machines, it’s not always about the cost of the item; it’s the personal side of things as well,” he said. “You buy from people, and we’ve worked with Ian for many years, and we know we can rely on his backup service.

“One of the biggest things that’s helped us get the results is the Borazon stone we have for the 673 bottom blade grinder. The new Toro E-Reels use a tungsten mixture that makes them very hard, and that stone really cuts it in well. That saves us a lot of problems because previously we would have had to sharpen them again, but now we get it done the first time around.”

Wembley brings in new pitch for season opener

Wembley Stadium, connected by EE, will have a new stateof-the-art pitch in place for this week’s FA Community Shield between Manchester City FC and Arsenal FC.

The FA Community Shield is the traditional curtain-raiser to a new football season. Last year’s contest was moved to the King Power Stadium in Leicester while Wembley Stadium hosted the UEFA Women’s Euro ‘22 Final.

The fixture returns to its usual home this week, with the Wembley groundsteam adding the final touches to a playing surface, which over the summer played host to sell-out concerts attended by over half a million people.

The fact Wembley Stadium is ready to host such a prestigious football match, so soon after concert season, is down

to the latest advancement in pitch technology. The hybrid carpet ‘Lay and Play’ grass pitch was grown off site, on a turf farm hundreds of miles away from the stadium. Link to timelapse video here: https://drive.google. com/drive/folders/1HEHX2zIwjzPx_ wLp7qjQ6YzdbSNhD1HS?usp=sharing

Once it was ready, more than 720 rolls of the hallowed turf were put on a number of lorries and transported to the stadium, before it was laid out last week. At 10 metres long by 1.2 metres (which if end to end would be 7km in length), the whole install took 60 hours to complete.

Wembley Stadium’s Grounds Manager Karl Standley said: “Lay and Play is a game-changer for a multi-purpose venue like Wembley Stadium. Previously, it might have taken up to five weeks after a concert to get a pitch ready for a football fixture. Now this can be done in just five days.

“Growing it offsite means we can ultimately cut down the time required between concerts and football to let the pitch recover, so that Wembley can continue to keep up with global demand to stage world-class events.”

It took more than three years of research and development to get to a stage where the meticulous Wembley team was happy that lay and play technology could meet their high standards.

“The Wembley pitch is unique and has very certain requirements. It involves a specific blend of sun, water, nutrients and takes 14 weeks to get into perfect shape. Even the fertiliser plan is bespoke to our requirements,” adds Karl.

“It is like one big chemistry experiment. We had to test every stage of the process including the grow time, any potential damage during transport and how it reacts

when it comes into the stadium. It is a very precise procedure, and we monitor every stage closely.

“The pitch for this week’s FA Community Shield fixture came into the stadium on July 25 and has settled in nicely. After that it will be used for the Rugby League Challenge Final before concerts and events including AEW Elite Wrestling at the stadium.

“The next step is to make the whole process sustainable with the old pitch going back into grassroots football.

“At present the old pitch goes off to a production site where the grass, sand

and plastic is separated. The grass decomposes naturally, and the sand is sent back to us so it can be re-used or sent out for use on grassroot pitches.

“We are close to now finding a use for the plastic, whereby it can be melted down and used to produce equipment for sports teams. Eventually the whole process will be 100% sustainable.”

Safe Weed Control by name and nature for NZ contractors thanks to Foamstream

As awareness of the hazards associated with glyphosate continues to grow across the globe, it is unsurprising that the number of commercial organisations switching to non-herbicidal weed control is on the rise. Safe Weed Control, based on the outskirts of Auckland in New Zealand, was established to service vegetation clearance for a range of clients including those in environmentally sensitive areas, which they tackle with ease thanks to Foamstream.

Owner of Safe Weed Control Matt Kirby was first introduced to Foamstream through his father, who was an early adopter of the technology, available from Weedingtech. “I established Safe Weed Control four years ago after spotting a gap in the New Zealand market for clients who don’t want to be using chemical herbicides but aren’t necessarily sizeable enough to invest in their own Foamstream equipment” he explains. “It was the simplicity and effectiveness of the system really appealed to me.”

Foamstream kills unwanted vegetation including weeds, moss and algae using the precise application of hot water insulated by a biodegradable, organic, plantbased foam. Delivered via a range of patented machinery, the retained heat from the water penetrates the plant through the leaves and travels down the root, killing the weeds quickly and safely.

“We have an L12 and M1200 unit

which we use on all of our jobs –everything from roads and verges, to boat ramps and retirement villages! The vast majority of our workload is in playgrounds and Foamstream is absolutely ideal for this purpose, preserving the aesthetic of the area with no harmful chemicals which children can potentially ingest.”

As well as killing the plant, Foamstream also sterilises surrounding seeds and spores, reducing future regrowth which results in fewer treatment cycles per year compared to other nonherbicidal methods of weed control such as burning or steam. “We get fantastic results with this system, in all environments – including sensitive areas – and in all weathers, which is another major plus on the Foamstream system.”

Matt continues, “In addition, the technical team at Weedingtech have always gone above and beyond. Despite the time difference, someone will tend to make themselves available and provide patient, knowledgeable and methodical advice when we’ve needed it.”
