Platipus supports Landform Consultants and Lotus Design in 1st Public Park in Gibraltar Since first pioneering the concept of underground tree anchoring in 1983, Platipus have designed, manufactured and supplied solutions to secure and stabilise trees across the world on prestigious projects such as the Commonwealth Park in Gibraltar.

This British territory on the South coast of Spain is inhabited by the British expats and a variety of communities working in shipping and tourism. The “Rock” is then one of the most densely populated territories with about 5,000 inhabitants per square kilometre. Despite over 30,000 inhabitants, Gibraltar lacked a public park for people to relax and enjoy green open spaces. The Local Authority used a former car park of 4000 m² to create the first park for the city - The “Commonwealth Park”. Landform Consultants were lead designers for the Scheme. The fountain and grassed areas were covered with trees and shrubs from Deepdale Nursery.

The construction required a reliable fixing system to secure the trees and shrubs and provide a safe environment for visitors to the park. Two types of Platipus Anchors underground rootball fixing systems were specified creating an aesthetically pleasing finish to the landscape. "The weather down on Gibraltar can be unpredictable and fierce at times. Securing our 140 mature trees effectively was a major concern. Having used the Platipus system for many years, it was the only reliable option to specify to date and they have performed brilliantly under some testing winter conditions. “said Mark Gregory MD Landform Consultants. Field Operations has designed the 5-acre Central Green at the heart of the Philadelphia Navy Yard Corporate Center. The site was historically marked by wetlands, meadows, and bird habitat and is growing into Philadelphia’s most innovative and progressive corporate neighborhood. The design unites the cutting edge urban potential of the site with its native habitat, resulting in a new type of environment that is sustainable, green, and natural as well as social, active, and urban. A 20-ft wide Social Track organizes the site’s circulation and frames a unique, immersive interior park featuring flowering meadows, a hammock grove, an outdoor amphitheater, bocce courts, and fitness stations.

A Lesson From A Caterpillar In its anniversary year, the Caterpillar from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is brought to life once again as an InstaPlant® display at RHS Garden, Wisley.

One of the strangest acquaintances that Alice makes during her adventures in wonderland is a blue, 3 inch tall Caterpillar, sat upon a mushroom smoking a pipe, who greets a very confused Alice with the question ‘Whooo are you?” Despite being disliked by Alice at first due to his stand offish nature, he becomes a teacher to Alice and she later remarks that he will one day turn into a butterfly, which he does. It is rather apt then that earlier this year we were commissioned by RHS Garden, Wisley to design and produce a 3D InstaPlant replica of the traditional caterpillar on a mushroom illustration originally drawn by John Tenniel, incorporating a few minor adjustments, for their summer celebration of the 150th anniversary of the well-loved Lewis Carroll creation Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In early spring we set to work on the initial design of the steel framework which was then fabricated off-site by a local company. When the framework was ready, our team of experienced workers fitted an intricate internal irrigation system before planting up the structure to design specifications.

A specific type of blocking compost was required to fill the structure, a very traditional method that spans back to Victorian times. Using approximately 3000 carpet bedding plants, that’s approximately 400 plants per square metre, we used a range of Alternanthera, Echeveria and Sedum producing a magnificent display. Standing 2.3 metres tall and weighing 1.5 tonnes the InstaPlant® team worked on the structure, taking great pride in every stage of the build to ensure that the final product was just right. We finally added some extra finishing touches such as painting the caterpillar’s face then the display remained in the nursery for six weeks where we grew and maintained it until it was ready to send out to the customer. The 3-D sculpture of the caterpillar relaxing on a mushroom welcomed visitors to RHS Garden, Wisley as part of the Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland inspired ‘Top Terrace’ bedding scheme created by Wisley’s second-year horticulture diploma students. The living sculpture has been nestled above the striking Rudbeckia hirta ‘Prairie Sun’, Ageratum houstonianum ‘High

Tide Blue’, Heliotropium ‘Dwarf Marine’ and Limonium sinatum ‘Rose Light’ where clashing colours and the ‘White Rabbit’ structure seemingly leads you from reality to Wonderland. Matthew Pottage, Acting Curator at RHS Garden, Wisley said that the caterpillar had been “a real hit over the summer.” We of course will be looking forward to working with RHS Garden, Wisley on future projects with more InstaPlant® creations. One of the beauties of this particular product here at Kernock is that they can be replanted time and time again and used for year on year displays. In fact, these kinds of structures are often returned to us for a complete make-over and recycled for new events, often reappearing from our glasshouses as a completely different looking product. All of the plants that were used in making this structure can be found in the InstaPlant® brochure or on our website www.instaplant.co.uk. The display is expected to last until the first frost of winter. Sarah Beckett Marketing Co-Ordinator

Low Maintenance Garden Design Pro-mats specialise in transforming unusable spaces into relaxing areas requiring the minimum amount of maintenance for residential and commercial clients.

The Hauraton RECYFIX® GREEN STANDARD surface reinforcement grid system was used extensively in the grassed pathways, where a high footfall was expected, and the grassed areas surrounding Banovallum School, Horncastle .The system helped to prevent erosion and improve surface drainage. Once installed, the RECYFIX® GREEN modules were discreet, yet provided a permanent surface reinforcement to the grassed areas with a loading capacity of 200 tonne/m². The pathways and area to be grassed were excavated, covered with a granular sub-base, a layer of sharp sand applied and then rolled. The RECYFIX® GREEN modules were then secured on top of the rolled surface and their apertures filled with top soil which was compacted then grass seeded. The grass was left to grow over several weeks before access was allowed.

Show-homes without question need to exude quality, promise and warmth, something to make the buyer feel as though they could potentially be standing in their brand new home. Interior design is a fundamental part of the buying and selling process; nobody wants to take on a renovation project, but what about the exterior of the home?

Most people dream of a beautiful and spacious garden, but can be put off by the idea of constant maintenance and upkeep. That’s why Pentland Homes in Scholars Green, Folkestone, decided to have stunning artificial grass from QuickGrass installed outside their gorgeous show home. The builders of the show home at Pentland Homes wanted a clean, streamlined garden that would be easy to maintain, while still looking realistic and be soft and natural underfoot.

A Must-Have For Any Work Place

PLANTS - TREES - FLOWERS

When supplied for offices, artificial plants can really brighten up any space, especially for those workplaces that consist of lots of grey concrete. A couple of fake trees located outside an office door can create a welcoming entrance, while silk flowers placed in a reception area provide a great first impression, and will look continually at their best at any time of year. When staff are busy focusing on their jobs, they are not likely to have time to water and care for real plants, but artificial plants placed inside an office or outdoors area require hardly any maintenance at all. Since they look so real, plants will continue to create a favourable impression with clients and customers. Fake trees and flowers are also incredibly cost-effective for any business, as they last such a long time. For offices with an outdoor area, installing fake grass can also

cut out the need for hiring garden maintenance services to keep the lawn trim and looking pristine - another money-saving bonus that comes with opting for artificial greenery. Research has proven that house plants and greenery can improve a person's mood and increase concentration levels, which makes them ideal for offices. However, with many people suffering from allergies associated with the pollen from real plants, it is not always practical having genuine specimens in the workplace. This is where artificial plants really come into their own when used in offices. They provide the stunning colour and lifelike greenery that can make an office space a more invigorating and inviting place to work, without the inconvenience of producing allergens that can negatively affect a person's health.

Artificial plants and flowers have come a long way over the years. It was once easy to spot a fake specimen, even from a distance, but with advances in production and technology, fake trees, plants and flowers are now more lifelike than ever before. The advantages of dotting artificial plants in and around our homes and gardens are well-known, but they also work spectacularly well when used in the work place.

Bring Lavender Back To London

Historically, lavender was grown and harvested across areas of London, but as time passed this slowly disappeared from the capital. From the start, Wild About Roofs claims to “Bring Lavender Back to London and has developed methods to utilise the roof space to grow this beautiful plant. Besides this, it gives you a striking pool of colour attracting bees and butterflies. In addition there is a possibility for a return for your money from a yearly harvest. The yearly harvest can be utilised to make a different range of products.

love nature you should love our company. People tend to think that a lavender roof is much more expensive than a standard green roof but the cost is roughly the same. The cost of installing a green roof can be easily offset by reducing ground level water storage. Also, it acts as an additional layer of thick insulation and improves the air quality by absorbing pollutants. The benefits of a Lavender Roof are countless. A research study from the University of Melbourne, said the green roof boosted the mental resources controlling attention, which

Griffin Glasshouse Takes Pride of Place at Coton Manor The installation of a Griffin Glasshouses greenhouse at Coton Manor in Northamptonshire three years ago has proved to be an essential part of nursery life ever since at the garden. This peaceful ten acre garden occupies a hillside position extending down from the 17th century manor house, constructed of mellow Northamptonshire stone. Landscaped on different levels, it comprises a series of distinctive smaller gardens, providing variety and interest throughout the season, and enhanced by flowing streams, fountains and ponds. Beyond the confines of the garden, there is a magical five acre bluebell wood and a colourful wildflower meadow at its best in June & July. As well as enjoying the garden, many visitors are drawn to the Victorian style Griffin Glasshouses greenhouse which houses propagators, young plants and over-winter 1000 sweet peas.

Caroline Tait, Coton Manor nursery manager, said: “The Griffin Glasshouse is bespoke in design and perfect for our requirements. We are delighted with our greenhouse; it not only looks great but it helps us raise much needed money for charity when Coton Manor Garden opens for the NGS.” Every year NGS gardens across England and Wales welcome about 750,000 visitors. Most gardens which open for the NGS are privately owned and open just a few times each year. Some gardens open as part of a group with the whole community involved. The gardens give all the money raised directly to the NGS. Charities supported by the NGS include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices, Crossroads Care and Alzheimer’s Society.

Visitors to Coton Manor can also explore the extensive nursery, take light lunches or teas from the Stableyard Café, or visit the garden shop. Garden courses complete the range of activities available at Coton. Linda Lane, Griffin Glasshouses managing director, said: “Griffin Glasshouses are thoroughly 21st century in design and maintenance. They are produced from the highest quality, maintenance-free aluminium. Our product range also includes an NGS collection. The NGS receives 5% of the proceeds from the sale of every glasshouse in this collection.”

Among eighteen international artists, the collaborating team of Atelier Bow-Wow & Architectuuratelier Dertien12 were asked to work on this idea. They worked together on the project Canal

and water. It is both people who damage the water quality and who enjoy the water in the city. I found there is huge potential to create new public space from the relationship between people’s behavior and water’s behavior.

City expected to have a sunbathing platform on the water to encourage people swimming again in the canal. I ask city to let us design this sunbathing platform. Then the project became one of the BrugesTriennale exhibits. It not only enlarges the public space within a too busy touristic city center, but also indicates how much the water quality has been improved by the effort of people and city government. The behavior of people swimming in the water would signal the improvement of water quality. We expect young citizen to practice their own public space in the water as well as the eldery who used to enjoy swimming in the canal. We name this the ‘Canal Swimmer’s Club’ in order to assign a fictional social background behind it. The site is divided into two areas by the “Carmersbrug”. One side provides a main access point for swimmers entering the water. On the other side tourist boats pass by on a regular basis and swimming is prohibited. Two platforms are placed on each side, connected by a path running under the “Carmersbrug”.

The main platform is positioned in a way as to not interfere with the tourist boat’s path, nearby trees and protected indigenous plants grown on the vertical quay walls, which are a testimony that Bruges used to be an international port. Within these conditions we introduce a bridge and ramp that allows people with disabilities to access the water level from the street. The platform is designed to be reassembled for every future summer. We chose a galvanized steel structure that can be quickly assembled and disassembled. The structure is placed on rented pontoons typically used by military. 60% of the platform is covered by a pergola made by Z-shaped louvers taking into consideration the behavior of sun, shadow, wind and rain. The louvers allow the wind to pass through, reducing the wind loads. Rainwater is collected by the lower lip of the Z-louvers and drained directly into the canal. The floor is made of recycled wood planks typically used for scaffolding. A steel wire net safely encloses the sides of the ramps, stair and bridge by keeping a visual connection from the street. We introduce a flag system used for beaches to visually mark the current swimming condition and possibly give a public feedback on the water quality. Canal Swimmer’s Club is the temporary appropriation of public space in the city. It’s a new type of architecture made from the relationship between different behaviors, which already existed in the city. Swimming skill of people and currency of water were translated into resources to create alternative public space in this project. It shows a critical position against institutionalized space as a materialization of preceding concept of facility which has played an important role in the bio politics that governed daily life throughout the 20th century.

These products also had to fit with the modern-look new tram system therefore items from the stainless steel Centerline range were selected, including planters, curved seating, litter bins, bollards and cycle hoops. The large planters, which can be made to any dimensions, help soften the urban setting whilst the curved benches give fluidity throughout. The Centerline range of street furniture is ideal for such developments due to the robust nature of the 316 stainless steel construction and timeless design, allowing for many years of functionality without becoming dated. www.benchmark-ltd.co.uk

users of the secondary-school complex and the community health centre to the inner centre without providing any animation for those out for a walk.

Through renovation, the wide straight connection with a clearly delineated beginning and termination underwent a transformation into a kind of sequence of micro-ambients, of locally widened surfaces connected by a slightly twisting narrower path. These instances of widening (in effect squares) feature attractive concrete urban elements (benches) whose careful arrangement slows down the users and provides focus, framing the space for the additional programme content to take place. As the path locally twists along the surrounding buildings, it gives rise to larger contained open spaces, allowing future expansion of the content from the buildings outwards, or the accommodation of other additional content as required over time. In the initial phase, all these newly-formed public spaces are simply and cost-effectively laid out as sand or grass surfaces, with sand surfaces in particular representing a successful middle ground between grass and paved city spaces and allowing a wide

range of use with only modest investment. With the transformation, the Promenada is turning into a main event axis of the city, its centre being placed into the new amphitheatre along the river. The river Paka is a torrential river, which means that its watercourse swells up significantly a few times a year, but remains relatively shallow at all other times. As a consequence, the riverbed is very deep and until now, the river, which is an attractive element of any city, flowed out of sight somewhere down below. The wide bridge also meant that anyone walking across it had a hard time seeing the river at all. By narrowing the bridge and placing it off the former axis, the space for the construction of an amphitheatre, which slowly slopes down towards the river surface, is recovered. The attractive amphitheatre by the river, with the new bridge serving as its backdrop, becomes the centre of the activity in the city, and the river may once again claim an important spot in the townspeople's consciousness.

Streetlife Benches Wave to the Future With benches of the Rough&Ready Range, the Long&Lean Bench and the special designed Olympic Wave Bench throughout the park, Streetlife has been a partner in one of the biggest transformation projects of London’s near history. Last month marked the ten year anniversary of London winning the bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Since that moment, an immense project with architectural statements and unique landscape architecture has been created to serve this historic venue in 2012. And… it’s still developing. The Park was from the beginning the spill of an ambitious transformation project to revive the former industrial area. The Olympic Games in London are over, but there is plenty more to come. Towards 2030 the environment will grow further and bloom as East London has never done before into a lively and active neighborhood, with some of the best transport links in the city. The Park is set to be one of the most desirable residential locations in town. Streetlife is proud to be part of this unique piece of contemporary

landscape of international significance and able to contribute to the quality of the urban life in the park. Due to the minimal design, the Rough& Ready Range affords a contemporary appearance, making this one of the favorite categories in the Streetlife Collection. The R&R range is sturdy and robust and incorporates 3 principle themes: Street Furniture, Tree Products and Bridges & Decking. A Streetlock® system is incorporated in the support design. The optional backrest is convexly planed and can be fixed at various positions. In the Olympic Park, Streetlife delivered R&R 5 which are connected per two in the length. The Long&Lean Benches have flat seats made of extremely durable FSC® red brown hardwood. The benches come in two widths, so you can sit either towards 1 side or 2 sides (back to back). The slats are reversible and can be used on both sides. Backrest are attached by the stainless steel Streetlock® comb system. L&L benches are placed among other in front of Stadium in the Olympic Park.

The Olympic Wave Bench was designed in cooperation with Hargreaves Associates, LDA Design London and Arup. A variety of long configurations have been installed by the Water Works in Stratford. The generously dimensioned, slightly curving bench systems are constructed of hot-dip galvanized steel supports and 100% FSC® hardwood slat modules. The supports are anchored to underground bases. The use of FSC® hardwood with all the benches fits in well with the natural character of the environment. With these 4 different designs, Streetlife was able to deliver a total furniture concept for the Olympic Park, while sustainability goes hand in hand with esthetics and diversity. People can hang out with each other or just sit down on Streetlife furniture. While being functional, the Streetlife designs are also intertwined with the park layout. Hikers & visitors are invited to relax and enjoy the magnificent applied green scenery. www.streetlife.nl

ALPHA RAIL MANUFACTURERS BESPOKE ARCHWAY FOR FELIXSTOWE PARK

Architectural metalwork specialists Alpha Rail has been appointed to supply a bespoke decorative archway for Martello Park in Felixstowe.

that are present around Felixstowe, which helped to maintain local history and heritage.

Martello Park is a newly created leisure and recreation space between the Martello Park housing development and the Felixstowe seafront. The area runs from Sea Road to Manor Terrace.

Commenting, Simon Walker, Suffolk Coastal Norse Property Services Manager said:

Suffolk Coastal District Council wanted to further enhance this public park space to add a new Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant public toilet block, additional play equipment, and a new entrance arch to provide identity to the main access from the existing seafront. Alpha Rail’s work included interpreting the drawings into a working design and the provision of 3D representations. The company then manufactured and installed a decorative metal archway with coloured lettering. The arch was powder coated blue with green highlighted areas. The top of the archway also featured grey squares with two small windows to resemble the military forts

“Alpha Rail provided a very straight forward and professional service from start to finish. Fabrication was managed in a timely fashion and flexibility offered in agreeing an installation date. The completed installation provided an entrance archway that was very much as envisaged from the conceptual drawings and provided the park entrance with the identity we anticipated.” Established in 1985, Alpha Rail is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of metal railings, gates, archways and other bespoke architectural metalwork. www.alpharail.co.uk

Architecture Meets Horticulture At World’s Second Oldest Theme Park Living Wall specialist, ANS Global, has installed a stunning ‘living’ nine metre inverted cone at the second oldest theme park in the world, Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen. The cone measures one metre wide at the base and grows to four metres wide at the top. A spokesperson at ANS Global explains: “We worked with the architects to develop the idea from a simple sketch that they had produced. It was their dream to have a tall, evergreen structure in the striking inverted conical shape, so we worked out the logistics to make their dream come true. “The sculpture has been created to make the biggest possible visual impact with abundant greenery, yet the smallest achievable footprint to maximise the space available. We have incorporated birdsong and bedding plants, and Tivoli has the capability of adding in seasonal features such as decorations and pumpkins to keep the

Pop Up Power Supplies® specified at Covent Garden Pop Up Power Supplies® recently supplied six retractable service power units for installation in the Piazza at Covent Garden. The 450kg units are buried out of site beneath the famous cobbled piazza and are raised out of the ground when required by a turning handle. When not in use the units do not impact on the historic appearance of the Piazza as they are barely noticeable. Covent Garden Technical Services Team needed a power solution for temporary stalls and events that are put on throughout the year. New Bridge Provides Essential Link Along Cornwalls Clay Trails

A new 31m x 3.5m Tied Arch bowed steel truss cycle/ bridle bridge linking St Austell to The Eden Project was recently installed by CTS Bridges during a night time road closure over the A391 Carluddon Road, Cornwall. The bridge provides an essential link for the ‘Clay Trails’ which form a network of walking, cycling and horse riding trails through mid-Cornwall encompassing the towering clay tips known collectively as the Cornish Alps. Alex Hoffen, Project Manager for Cormac praised CTS for a successful installation, saying ‘the bridge will benefit pedestrians, equestrians, cyclists,

young, old and disabled with the main aim being towards sustainability, health and wellbeing and the environment’. The bridge was designed by CTS as a tied arch formed from 500mm CHS with steel hollow section hangers and sub-frame. The deck was overlaid with rubber tiles in order to provide a safe and quiet surface for horse riders. The 1.8m high parapet comprises steel uprights and top rail with stainless steel weld mesh and a 625mm solid steel toe board. The bridge was transported in one piece from Huddersfield to Cornwall on a 5 axle triple extender step frame vehicle under police escort

for the last part of the journey. CTS planned and supervised the installation using a 350t crane. CTS Bridges specialise in the design, manufacture and installation of footbridges in timber, steel, FRP or combined materials to suit aesthetics and budget. Increased Population Specialist consultants Bernwood ECS have carried out pre- and post-development monitoring of the Great Crested Newts on the whole Hazeley site from 2002 to 2014, including the two ponds fed from concrete block permeable paving. The surveys show an overall increase in the population of Great Crested Newts and suggest that ‘Favourable Conservation Status’ on site has been achieved. In fact, it was noted that they were probably under-counted due to the ponds’ depth and turbidity,

The project takes a holistic approach and offers an impressive demonstration of concrete block permeable paving providing a controlled flow of clean water for wildlife habitats. The permeable paving provides effective water treatment generally without the need for other SuDS techniques, such as swales or filter strips, minimizing land-take. At the same time, wildlife is protected with an absence of gulleys and other traps. It clearly shows that permeable paving can be applied to sloping ground, with

the general maintenance programme for the Academy, carried out by a small non-specialist team using day-to-day equipment. It is not treated as anything unusual or apportioned a specific budget. Correct design and installation is key to the long-term performance of permeable paving, including details to prevent silt runoff from vegetated areas. The concrete block permeable paving at the school behaves well in cold weather – far better than asphalt – and rock salt provides cheap, simple and effective de-icing.

STRATA STONES – CREATING BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPES NATURALLY

From formal to informal, traditional to contemporary, Strata Stones’ extensive range of high quality natural stone landscaping products can be used to create majestic yet functional commercial and domestic schemes. Indeed such is the diversity of Strata Stones’ product offering - available in modular units or supplied to bespoke design requirements – it is possible to combine uniform shapes and lines with more random materials as a means of bringing designs to life. Taking in a number of ultimate and high quality sandstone, limestone and slate paving collections, Strata Stones has the capability to provide an unrivalled product offering that can be used to breathtaking, yet practical effect. Showcasing alongside the company’s sumptuous and stylish Elegance sandstone collection is Strata Stones’ new, three colour range of Sorrento tumbled paving in calibrated sandstone and limestone, not to mention the Salerno collection that comes in four colours, which alongside a calibrated surface also features sawn edges. This feature alone means that slabs can be laid with a minimum gab in the jointing to give a contemporary ambience, whilst retaining the traditional characteristics of natural stone paving. The outstanding popularity of Elegance, however, emanates from a palette of seven colours that also features sawn edges and surface to deliver a contemporary ambience. Elegance also works in harmony with the Planked that is widely adopted where space is at a premium and a lengthening or widening effect needs to be achieved. Four further sandstone collections take in Venetian, a slip-resistant, textured paving with a lightly sandblasted surface that is available in five colours; Parish delivers a time worn look, resembling that of reclaimed York stone paving and which complements any period setting; the Kendal Collection, a product range available in 15 -25mm thickness, making it perfectly suited to large areas or patios where depth is at a premium, and Whitchurch, a traditional paving collection that comes in a choice of nine colours, ranging from buffs, yellows and browns to light, silver and dark greys. Whitchurch is also available in three beautiful shades of limestone and is supplied with a riven finish and hand cut edges. Completing Strata Stones’ collection portfolio is a lightly riven slate paving offering that can be supplied in rustic, olive black or jade to deliver a modern and thrilling outdoor look. Serving to create the perfect focal point within any hard landscaping design, Strata Stones has developed four circle sets – Sovereign, Elegance, Classic, and Celtic Cross & Sidus. For those looking for an authentic alternative to concrete block paving, Strata Stones’ natural stone block paving or granite and sandstone setts are a must. Completing the picture is a striking range of landscaping accessories from Strata Stones that takes in water features, stepping stones, coping, edgings, steps, planters and walling. Proludic Presents

Innovative Themed Play By Gemma Nickerson, Marketing Manager at Proludic

“Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.” Albert Einstein Proludic are one company that has an extensive themed equipment range that allows equipment to be categorised into five distinct styles: City Get out to the big city and become a postman, fire fighter or even an ambulance driver! Aquatica Go under the sea with fish and creatures found at the bottom of the ocean! Adventure Lose yourself in the jungle of the tropical rainforest! Metropolis Transport each child to the futuristic city built on science fiction! Medieval Become your favourite princess or knight in this castle fortress! New for 2015 we have also allowed this theming to be carried across to our popular and existing Diabolo multiplay equipment range. Diabolo is a cost effective solution for providing a variety of activities in compact spaces.

Themed equipment encourages playing, learning, discovery and invention for children from 2 years onwards. It can make a play area come to life! Crucially it also provides children with a platform to be creative and imaginative. The games they play on themed equipment can go beyond the structures themselves. Children can be whatever they want to be: a firefighter, a princess, an astronaut…the list and possibilities are endless.

"Imaginative Play - Play where the conventional rules, which govern the physical world, do not apply." Bob Hughes, ‘A Play-Worker’s Taxonomy of Play Types’

68 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 16

If you are interested in using theming in your play area project, here are our five top tips: •

• • • •

Use a consultation with local children and adults to find out what they would like to see and adapt their ideas into the overall theme. Use the natural environment the play area sits in to shape your theme. Personalise your playground to local history of culture. Ensure that the full play project caters for all age ranges. Use the manufacturer’s knowledge and design flair to help put your dream theming into reality!

Beyond these standard themes available, Proludic also have the ability to create bespoke ideas, sketches or even logos on their equipment. This crafts a truly innovative playground with a unique look. It is an opportunity to raise the profile of playgrounds within your communities. All of our bespoke elements can be made to fit seamlessly into existing themed equipment ranges – creating a consistent look. A great example of what can be achieved is our case study of RAF Brize Norton. We built the Hercules plane which was completely bespoke, inclusive and had a wing span of 19 metres. The play area has been a huge success and was opened by the Prime Minister David Cameron in 2011. More information on this project and all our themed products are available on our website www.proludic.co.uk

Enviroplay introduces you to “Conlastic”

SLEEK, CONTEMPORARY and ELEGANT with LONGEVITY TO BOOT! These are just some of the words associated with this beautiful play equipment. Fabulous for use in areas such as urban design, so why would you use Conlastic? Looking for equipment to compliment a contemporary design. Looking for a sleek finish, rather than the colour and boldness of the usual type of equipment. Inner city development depicting a nonrustic approach. Perfect solution for an integrated play area which looks more like a designer artistic finish.

Key points • Built to last far longer than most play equipment. • No bearing damage issues due to innovative bearing system. • Minimal upkeep. • Fantastic as contrast with other materials such as wood or stone. • Most items do not require a safety surface. • Larger items are fantastic as statement pieces for an image. • Bespoke structures can be made on request. • Can be used in both water and sand.

Why should you use this equipment with children? • Makes children really think about play and use their imagination. • Great work out as they have to use their body weight to move the equipment. • Amazing for thought provoking play. • Keeping fit while learning and developing.

Api Supports Appg Call For Holistic Cross-Party Strategy For Children A clarion call to put play at the heart of government policy on child health and wellbeing has been welcomed by the Association of Play Industries (API). The API supports the central recommendation of the All Party Parliamentary Group on a Fit and Healthy Childhood for government to adopt a holistic strategy to support child development. Launching its report to Parliament, the group’s co-Chair, children’s advocate Baroness Floella Benjamin, called on politicians from all parties to acknowledge the vital role of play in children’s lives and particularly in helping tackle the physical inactivity crisis. Key recommendations for government in the report that win API support are:

If they do not, then we must address that. This report makes some strong recommendations which if followed will have a positive impact on creating more opportunities for children to play. High quality public play facilities bring innumerable benefits to local communities that reach far beyond simply providing children with a fun place to play.” Recent research by the API amongst families shows that over 80% of parents think there should be funding for more

EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE COUNCIL MAKES BIG OPERATIONAL SAVINGS WITH ALL-NEW TORO FLEET East Riding of Yorkshire Council has invested in Toro for the first time as a full mowers replacement programme gets underway. In a substantial £470,000 deal with Toro distributor Lely UK and Toro dealer the Russell Group, the local authority has taken delivery of 18 new Toro machines; 12 Toro LT3340s, a heavy-duty triple cylinder mower, and six Toro Groundsmaster 3400 high performance rotary mowers. The delivery marks the start of a four-year supply agreement, during which the Council will take on an additional 12 machines, making 30 in total. Andy Height, service manager for waste, streets and grounds at the Council, explains why the grounds team decided to replace their fleet with 100 percent Toro machines. “We recently underwent a comprehensive review of grass cutting across the entire authority. Every two weeks, the grounds team cuts the equivalent of 919 professional football pitches. At 6.9 million square metres of grass, that is one of the largest areas of land tended to by any council in the UK,” he says. In search of a better quality machine, the Council went out to tender and tested out a number of mowers. The evaluation process saw eight staff members – five charge hands and three grounds operatives – get involved in trialling the various machines.

“We went through a rigorous procurement exercise before purchasing Toro mowers. We have 124 grounds staff, with 54 of those being seasonal here at the Council, and it was very important to have a selection of those involved in choosing which new machines to take on board. They’re the ones out there using them every day, so it’s vital they’re happy with the choice,” Andy explains. Prior to this deal, Andy says that the Council had a couple of Toro machines out on hire throughout the summer last year, and received excellent feedback from staff using them. Along with high quality and positive staff feedback, Andy adds that financial savings were equally important in the decision-making process. With local authorities facing increasing pressure to save money and increase efficiency, investment in good machinery is imperative for future plans. “Since using Toro, the information we’ve received from the fleet shows average fuel savings of 12-15 percent, which is fantastic. On top of that, we’re also expecting to experience big savings on the maintenance and repairs side. “With this type of work, it’s vital that breakages are kept to a minimum and that we can get things repaired quickly. Toro’s reputation for reliability and after sales care is great and another key reason for choosing them,” he explains.

For councils such as East Riding, the GM3400 and LT3340 are the ideal workhorses needed to maintain the quality of green spaces in the most productive, cost effective way. Engineered to provide an outstanding, longterm and reliable solution to out-front mowing, the GM3400 is a practical and sustainable investment, while the high quality design and robust heavy duty construction of the LT3340 means it’s able to meet the most demanding of environments. From light trimming to mowing dense, overgrown areas, the LT3340 can be tailored to suit any mowing application. The 18 Toro mowers have already been put to work on East Yorkshire’s vast urban and rural grassy areas – something that’s not gone unnoticed by the public, says Andy. “If the grass isn’t cut to a good standard, people notice, and we’ve already had compliments from the public since using the Toros. Combined with fuel savings and great feedback from staff, in all, we’re very happy with our new fleet,” he adds.
