Month-long Arts, Crafts, Food and Drink Extravaganza at RHS Garden Rosemoor Throughout September and until 2 October, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Garden Rosemoor in Great Torrington, Devon becomes THE place to go if you’re into arts, crafts, food or drink. Rosemoor celebrates the rich heritage of arts and crafts, food and drink that the local area has to offer. Starting with the Artists’ Garden Exhibition on 2 September and culminating in the now-famous Rosemoor Apple Day on 2 October, there will be treats for all the senses.
The Artists' Garden: Art Exhibition 2 – 18 September The popular Artists’ Garden art exhibition returns to Rosemoor, bringing together more than 80 of the South West’s most talented artists all under one roof. The exciting and colourful display of pictures, prints and cards are inspired by the natural world, especially gardens, plants and flowers. They have been created using a variety of media and will also include landscapes, seascapes, animals and wildlife pictures from well-known and less familiar local artists. The exhibition opens daily, 2 –18 September, 11am – 5pm. All the works exhibited are for sale, and visitors will be able to talk to at least two of the artists every day. Celebrate September Weekends 2 - 4, 10 – 11 and 17 – 18 September In addition to the rich colours of the late summer and early autumn in the garden, for three weekends in September, Rosemoor celebrates the work of more than 40 different local craftspeople and food artisans. Many will be demonstrating the beauty and creativity of the products they make. From 10am to 4pm each day, come and support these talented craftsmen and women by treating yourself

to an unusual handcrafted item. Peruse and shop to your heart’s content among craft and art stalls, sample and buy local produce, and join us for hands-on activities and entertainment. Visitors can also learn to throw clay with Ash Tree Pottery 11am - 1pm & 2pm 4pm a free hands on 20 minute lesson to throw your own pot. If you’re happy with your creation then Ash Tree will fire it for you in their kiln and post it for only £8. Celebrate September Weekends will be found in our temporary events village set against Rosemoor's magnificent Lower Woodland, where you can see how the autumn harvest is coming along in the Forest Garden, Community Allotments and raised beds. Real Ale and Cider Weekend 23 – 25 September In late September, Rosemoor holds its Real Ale and Cider Weekend (Friday – Sunday, 12noon – 5pm), supported by the North Devon branch of CAMRA. It will feature a range of interesting, unusual and eminently quaffable real ales from near and far – plus ciders, too – all served direct from the barrel. We will celebrate the harvest with displays of produce from
the garden, and food stalls, as well as the chance to sample and buy delicious wines from Devon and Cornish vineyards. This is our fourth Real Ale and Cider Weekend, which once again promises to be a truly great occasion. Note: if you're worried about driving, two-pint carry-outs will also be available so that you can take your favourites home. Apple Day 2 October Our arts, crafts, food and drink extravaganza then culminates in Rosemoor’s famous Apple Day. A grand day out for all the family, Rosemoor’s Apple Day is organised in conjunction with Orchards Live, Thornhayes Nursery and the RHS South West Area Fruit Group – who will endeavour to identify your unknown apple cultivars. With fantastic apple displays; tastings; planting and cultivation tips; children’s activities and trails; plus stalls selling fruit, cider and apple juice, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Angle Twitch, a Morris side from Barnstaple whose dances are loosely based on both Border and Cotswold styles, will be dancing in the Fruit Field today with their brightly coloured tatter jackets, sticks and bells – truly a ‘rainbow’ Morris side. Gastronomic treats in store this autumn at RHS Gardens As crisp and clear days herald the arrival of autumn, foodie fans are in for a smorgasbord of gourmet treats at the four Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) gardens. From real ale and cider festivals to apple tasting days, the gardens’ packed schedule offers a vibrant chance to enjoy the colours, tastes and scents of autumn at events to suit all tastes. Visitors will have the chance to browse and buy fresh autumn produce at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey, RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex, RHS Garden Harlow Carr in North Yorkshire and RHS Garden Rosemoor in Devon. From Devon apples to Yorkshire ales, there will be a wide selection of regional food and drink on offer and visitors can celebrate the rich bounty of the autumn harvests as well as take part in a range of events and activities for all the family. The events will be set against the richly coloured and beautiful backdrop of the gardens in autumn, when they come ablaze with fiery reds, rustic bronzes and vibrant hues of amber and gold. From the reds, russets and browns of ornamental grasses to the abundance of bright autumn berries, the gardens provide an evocative setting for invigorating autumn walks. The season starts in September with a Real Ale and Cider Festival at RHS Garden Harlow Carr (10-11 Sept), celebrating all things Yorkshire and for the first time featuring Yorkshire wines. RHS Garden Rosemoor’s Real Ale and Cider Weekend (23-25 Sept) will include traditional ‘pub style’ games for children such as Table Skittles and Quoits. RHS Garden Wisley’s Taste of Autumn event (19-23 Oct) offers a platter of delights including cheese, fudge, cakes, liquorice, nuts and garlic, apples and more. The autumn events season draws to a close with RHS Garden Hyde Hall’s Autumn Festival (5-6 Nov) which as well as tasty treats also offers the chance to admire the beauty of crafted wood. Kebony Adds Sustainability To City Hang-Out Slussplan Urban Park Celebrates One Year Anniversary

ast year, the Malmö Municipality in Sweden unveiled the opening of Slussplan, a brand new urban park. One year on, Slussplan Urban Park has proved to be a great success, offering a public space without the use of tropical hardwood, ensuring sustainability at its core.

The park combines a unique stairway providing access to Malmö’s historic canal, green space for the residents of the surrounding neighbourhood and triangular seating made from sustainable Kebony wood. Bordered by the existing buildings, the triangular park is divided into two parts featuring circular vegetation beds adorned with shrubs and plants on one side and an active urban square on the other. The park vaunts an art installation by David Svensson, which was unveiled at the park’s opening last year by Ola Melin, director of Urban planning division in Malmö.

Designed by Mandaworks for the Malmö Municipality, this project is a triumph of landscaping architecture, weaving together infrastructure to create a new area for urban ecology and recreational space. Following the outright ban imposed upon tropical hardwood in Stockholm, and a growing trend in European cities of legislating against, and voluntarily avoiding the use of timber imported from the tropics in public projects, Mandaworks wanted to ensure that the materials chosen were sourced from sustainably managed, non-tropical forests. Kebony’s sustainable wood was therefore selected for the ‘urban hang-out’ benches along the promenade, due to the material’s positive impact in reducing demand for high performance tropical timber. A recent study by environmental consulting firm Bergfald & Co. demonstrated that Kebony has a substantially lower carbon footprint than its tropical hardwood equivalents.
The study shows that the carbon footprint for clear-fell Brazilian Ipê is in the range of 7,500–15,000 kilograms per cubic metre; whilst the carbon footprint of Kebony is approximately 459 kilograms per cubic meter, both figures include treatment and transportation to Northern Europe. This paves the way for a future in which wood is an integral and, most importantly, sustainable part of the construction industry.

eveloped in Norway, the patented Kebony technology is an environmentally friendly process, which modifies sustainably sourced softwoods by heating the wood with furfuryl alcohol - an agricultural by-product. By polymerising the wood’s cell wall, the softwoods permanently take on the attributes of tropical hardwood including high durability, hardness and dimensional stability, without the need for tropical deforestation.
For Kebony, this waterside urban landscaping project follows another recent project at Fjord City, Oslo, a publically accessible park and bathing complex. Here there was a similar effort to capitalise on Kebony’s strong eco-credentials and durability to transform a post-industrial waterfront into a recreational space of this nature. In both cases, Kebony’s versatility as a material has rendered it invaluable for the construction of everything from street furniture to public boardwalk.
The silver-grey patina that the wood develops over its elongated life-span has also singled it out as a popular material for architects in marine settings like these, where its matured colour is frequently a perfect complement to the setting. Martin Arfalk of Mandaworks commented “We wanted the park to be a lasting space for public recreation and Kebony’s wood is suitably durable that it will stand up to wearing and weathering. What Makes Leaves Change Color In The Fall? A beautiful fall landscape is a sign your trees have been hard at work

oon enough, summer trips to the beach and refreshing lemonade will be replaced by autumn’s cool breeze, football games and pumpkin lattes. The real sign fall is here though, is the brilliant folliage — the most beloved sign of autumn.

Bright green leaves transform into browns, buttery yellows, deep reds and vibrant shades of orange. This awe-inspiring phenomenon is greatly appreciated, yet often misunderstood. Many believe that cool weather alone causes leaves to change color.
Leaves
While temperature can dictate intensity, it is just one of the factors that play a part in painting a striking fall landscape. Cooler temperatures, changes in rainfall, and most of all, shortening day length, play a role in the changing color of tree leaves. This is what’s really going on behind the scenes as green leaves turn to shades of autumn. During the spring and summer, leaves are busy creating the foods necessary for the tree’s growth. But in fall, leaves reduce their food-making process because of changing temperatures and the amount of sunlight. Chlorophyll, the chemical that gives leaves their bright green color, begins to breakdown and disappear. Carotenes, the substances that gives leaves their yellow and orange hues, are present in leaves throughout the growing season.
The larger amount of green chlorophyll masks the colors of carotenoids until fall’s arrival when chlorophyll production wanes and other pigments get their chance to shine. The pigments that produce the most exciting colors —reds, pinks and purples — come from anthocyanins, which are manufactured from sugars the tree produces. As days shorten and nights cool, excess sugars are trapped in the leaf as veins leading into and out of the leaves close. Combined with bright light, the sugars are used in the production of anthocyanin pigments. These colors are the most variable from year to year, because their formation is the most dependent on favorable fall environmental conditions and sunlight.
By late autumn, the yellow and red pigments, following the green, disintegrate in the leaves. This final step exposes the brown tannins. When leaves fall, they decompose and provide the soil with nutrients. These leaves also become a food source for many organisms. Sugar maples, birches and other broad-leafed trees shed their leaves in the fall. But before they do, they salvage as many nutrients as possible to store through the cold months and reuse the following spring. Autumn leaf colors vary from year to year. Some years, those bright and beautiful reds, purples and yellows last for weeks, while other years, autumn leaves quickly turn to brown. The factor responsible for the onset of fall and the intensity of autumn color is the weather.
A warm, wet spring combined with a mild summer and bright autumn days with cool nights results in more vivid colors. On the other hand, a late spring or severe drought will delay the onset of fall color for weeks. A warm fall will also dull autumn colors. Wind and rain during the fall color season will often knock the leaves off the tree before they can produce their best color. Trees under stress may discolor or drop leaves early. Extreme heat, drought, insects, disease and damaged roots can all be great stressors for trees. The best time of year to examine your trees for signs of stress is early September. Make Your Own Seasons and Grow Indoors Year-Round You don’t need a yard to cultivate a garden — you can have it all indoors.

he kitchen counter is just one of the many places plants will pop up, as indoor gardening becomes the new, easy way people can grow vegetables, herbs, foliage plants and flowers all year. One of the main advantages of indoor gardens is they aren’t limited by seasons, which means gardeners can grow summer crops in the middle of winter and vice versa. Truly any plant can be grown indoors, as long as the growing environment is suited to the plant’s needs. You can grow virtually anything inside as long as you have a little space, a lot of light and decide whether you want to grow in soil or hydroponically. Hydroponic systems grow plants in anything but soil, mediums such as coco coir, sand, gravel, or straight water. When growing hydroponically, the gardener provides all the nutrients a plant would need to their water supply. Plants are more sensitive to environmental changes when grown

hydroponically and should be checked daily.

Systems with soil are little more forgiving and can be managed more on an as-needed basis. Soil found outside is not appropriate, since it’s often too heavy and may contain weeds and insects. Opt for a mix specific to indoor plants. Starting your indoor garden is simple. Maintaining the garden’s "Indoor Limiting Factors" is the key to success. Indoor Limiting Factors 1.
Let there be light. The type of lighting needed in any indoor gardening system depends on the types of plants you want to grow. Aggressive fruiting and flowering plants or gardens with dense canopies need more intense lighting compared to others. There is more to a grow light than the bulb so talk to your Homestead Gardens garden center specialist about buying a Sun System that includes all the proper equipment.

Don’t let it dry out. Whether you’re growing in soil or water, a clean source of water is required to grow healthy plants. Water with added chemicals, such as public tap water with fluoride, would upset the balance. Well water also works in hydroponic systems as long as the pH levels are monitored closely. Regularly test water and soil pH levels for the best results. Get settled. Regulating indoor factors like heat, humidity and CO2 keep plants alive. CO2 that plants use during photosynthesis is important so exhaust fans and air filtration systems are critical. Supplemental CO2 can be added to indoor systems with mushroom bags or natural gas burners. Feed and repeat. Plants grown indoors will need an extra boost since most of the nutrients in the soil or growing medium are quickly
eaten by the roots. Good sources of fertilizer facilitate the needs of the indoor garden. Choose organic if you’re growing vegetables. 5.
Get to the root of it. A healthy root zone is the key to strong plants. Well-draining soil or soil-less mix allows oxygen to flow through. When combined with air pumps, stones and diffusers, your system will be complete.

he International Garden Festival invites visitors to explore twenty-six interactive garden installations created by seventytwo landscape architects, architects, designers and visual artists from nine countries.
For the 17th edition, five new creations by designers from Canada, the United States, France and Switzerland will join the temporary installations on view and a sixth will be exhibited at special events throughout the summer. Five new gardens of the 2016 edition of the Festival were selected by the jury from 203 projects submitted from 31 countries for the annual competition. LE CAVEAU is a complex construction made of stone gabions that support a levitating green platform.

In TiiLT, 24 tents populate a space like a school of fish or a flock of birds. CARBONE offers a charred tree trunk, capturing carbon during its entire life and contributing to the renaissance of the forest. These new installations create new experiences and environments to add to those of past editions. The growing plane is shrouded in the intimacy of Le Caveau - a simple room of stone and earth. It is a room for reflection. It is a room for dreamers. Just as the plane levitates before us, we are held in the balance of the stone and life itself. The personification of our own imagination is suspended in time. The primitive plane symbolizes a beginning, while the seeds and the soil form the tilted horizon between earth and sky.

and understanding of the ephemeral and temporal qualities of space. CYCLOPS by Craig Chapple, architect, Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Cyclops is a singular object on the landscape as well as a singular frame of the landscape. It is made up of 100 8-meter long tapering timber planks held in the shape of an inverted cone around a central opening for the user to occupy. These planks are fastened to each other at the innermost diameter and held upright by a 150 mm steel ring beam at the outer diameter.
At first approach, Cyclops is an object on the landscape, seen as a clear, platonic form. Through its transparency and porosity, however, it is an object that is also dynamic and changing, blending with the environment. By entering the central 1.5 m opening at the bottom of the cone, the user enters into a different relationship with the object and the landscape. By experiencing it from the inside-out, the object acts to frame the surrounding landscape and sky for the viewer in this same dynamic, temporal
way by blending the manmade, platonic clarity of the frame with the organic and natural. The viewer plays the central role of the work in rediscovering the relationship between the object, the frame, and the natural landscape. Formally trained as an architect at Yale University but with a deep commitment to creating art, Craig Chapple has pursued both architecture and the visual arts simultaneously throughout his career. Craig’s work is born from the synergy of these two disciplines, producing work that focuses on the overlap
of line, pattern, texture, and process. He works in analog and digital practices in drawing, painting, and sculpture. Finding roots in the formal geometries of the labyrinth and the many informal camping traditions in the Canadian landscape, TiiLT is a transformable and inhabitable place for visitors to act, or to idle, however they may be inclined.
Each structure may be flipped between two orientations, responding to the position of the sun, offering alternating views and shifting pathways through the site. The toggling movement conjures a school of fish, or a flock of birds, flitting in opposite directions yet connected as a whole. The straw-like lightness of the structures and the white skin recall a field of floral blooms, contrasting the surrounding green landscape and blue sky. TiiLT challenges the notion of the garden in creating an interactive environment that is part sculpture and part landscape - to evoke a sense of place and beauty from modest elements. TiiLT provides simple, intimate, shaded spaces in congregation, retrieving

This installation evokes the cycle of production as a parallel to the carbon cycle. The garden landscaped or the landscape gardened. Regenerating the forest and sowing where we have harvested brings nature back to life. Transmit the love of landscape to those who will outlive us. A noble and familiar material, wood is our crib, our bed, our coffin. Cut a tree, remove it from the forest, in itself a vast garden, is the fruit of our labour. It is the result of the work of those who came before us, who planted a seed and provide us today with the wood that gives us rest. A sculpted tree trunk, partially cut into pieces helps to illustrate the primary material used to build furniture.
A stump and its roots, a tree trunk cut into parts and modules made of timber, some lightly burned on the surface. A young tree grows where the tree might have grown tall had the tree not fallen. Coache Lacaille Paysagistes was created in 2013 by Maxime Coache and Victor Lacaille. Luc Dallanora joined this duo in 2015. They are all graduates of the École nationale supérieure de la nature et du paysage de Blois in France. The primary interest of this trio of landscape architects is the landscape. If their knowledge requires creativity, they are also artists. Their role is somewhere between the gardener, the designer, the architect and the urban planner.

Rigby Taylor Helps Bring Nature Into Towns
Increasing numbers of county, borough and parish councils, as well as schools, are seeing high levels of improvements in the increased levels of visual impact and the biodiversity benefits being created by their use of Rigby Taylor’s EuroFlor urban flower mixtures. Addagrip Terraco Ltd are delighted to announce that their Addaset, Addabound and Terrabound Resin Bound porous surfaces have all achieved BBA certification, making them the first and only Resin Bound Surfacing manufacturer to achieve this standard. Civils Expo 2016 Crossrail, Midlands Growth And Northern Powerhouse Heading Up The Agenda At Civils Expo 2016

ivils Expo, part of the award winning UK Construction Week, is the UK's leading event dedicated to civil engineering and construction, bringing together leading suppliers of the latest technologies, systems and products required in the civil sector. The seminar schedule has been released with some of the industry’s biggest names speaking on the sector’s biggest issues. To further explore the Crossrail project there will be another seminar on day two looking at challenges, strategies and considerations of the remodelling and construction of stations along the planned route. Stations
are now being upgraded to help cater for the expected increase in passenger numbers when the service starts. Speakers confirmed to discuss the environmental, design and maintenance considerations include Rand Watkins, Lead Project Engineer at TfL and Chris Frost, Future Station Project Manager at TfL. On the final day, Richard Ogden, Chairman of Buildoffsite will be looking at OFFSITE CONSTRUCTION: WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? Construction 2025 targets mean that the industry needs to increase its output and many have highlighted offsite as a potential answer. This seminar will examine whether offsite can provide

a viable method to meet current targets and increase productivity. UK’S Biggest Furniture Event Of The Year - The January Furniture Show The UK’s number one furniture and furnishings event, the January Furniture Show (JFS), is set to be over 10% bigger and better for 2017. Hosting another strong line up of over 450 exhibitors, JFS is the place to be for retailers, buyers and commercial specifiers who are looking for the latest products and developments in the industry. New sign ups Ekornes and Malini will join big names such as Parker Knoll, Sherborne, Ashley Manor Upholstery, Libra, Buoyant and Ercol showcasing everything from cabinet furniture, upholstery and beds to soft furnishings and giftware. The four-day show runs from Sunday 22 until Wednesday 25 January across five halls at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC). Visitors will get the chance to see all the latest innovations, collections, offers, promotions and sales
support which will be key to business success over the next 12 months. Laraine Janes of the January Furniture Show said: “We had 85% of 2016 exhibitors sign up for next year on the spot which shows what a success it really is and how integral it is to the furniture and furnishings business. We have had to increase hall space by 10% to accommodate the new enquiries and, laying strong foundations for the future of the show, we have just signed a seven year deal with the NEC.” The new long term deal with the NEC underlines the centre’s confidence in the future of the show. And the seven year commitment from JFS cements its position as the UK’s biggest and best furniture and furnishings event with the NEC as its home.

The transport links, countrywide connectivity, suitability and scale of the halls and the accessibility for exhibitors are why almost all the UK’s important trade events take place there. Last year saw changes to the NEC campus with the opening of Resorts World, and, adding another layer of nationwide connectivity will be the HS2 terminal opening at the NEC in 2023.” The next show will see Hall 5 as the major destination hall offering its strongest line up of commercial big hitters for years. Hall 4 boasts leading international cabinet brands while Hall 3 will be the place to visit for furnishing accessories. Hall 2 will be the centre for top end international contemporary furniture, while Hall 1 remains a destination hall for high end exclusive ranges.
