EAST MEETS WEST: CREATING A TRANQUIL ENGLISH GARDEN IN THE HEART OF JAPAN

Located 100 kilometres southwest of Tokyo on the island of Honshû, lies an extraordinary landscaping project. Most designers, given the opportunity to create a scheme in the heart of one of Japan’s bustling towns would be forgiven for relying solely on typical Japanese hard landscaping elements. A sori-bashi bridge, rocks, gravel and sand all obvious choices, and all synonymous with Japanese garden design.

But British-born landscape designer Stuart Axtell had a more unorthodox vision when tasked with transforming a derelict area of land for his private residential client. The result? A serene space that embodies the beauty of formal English gardens while honouring

Japanese cultural values and design principles. It’s a scheme that despite contrasting so starkly with its surroundings still manages to incorporate two essential Japanese garden elements - stone to form the structure of the landscape; and water, to represent life-giving force. It was only apt therefore that Stuart, who is Haddonstone’s sole East Asian distributor, placed the Northamptonshire cast stone manufacturer’s Neapolitan Small Double Fountain and Pool Surround centre stage in his scheme.

Drawing inspiration from his childhood in the South West of England, Stuart named the project Kingswell, after the small Somerset hamlet between Bath and Wells

where he was born. As part of the design process, Stuart travelled back to the UK with his client to source designs especially for the garden. Together, they carefully selected a variety of products from Haddonstone’s extensive garden and landscaping range. Known for their enduring beauty and exceptional quality, these handcrafted-to-order designs were made especially for the project, and once completed, the pieces were securely packaged and shipped across to Japan.

The cast stone designs that Stuart and his client chose for Kingswell evoke that classic combination of elegance and grandeur which is so admired in English garden design. Among the designs selected were

Haddonstone’s Large Basket of Fruits, Hadrian Seats, and AcanthusLeaf Balls with Collared Bases.

Stuart reflects on why he incorporated these elements into the project: “When I first visited the site, it was clear that we had an incredible opportunity to bring something entirely unique to the area, and thankfully my client was happy for me to draw on my own English influences. My vision was to combine the beauty of the English countryside whilst respecting the Japanese location. I do believe that we have done just that and the designs we selected from Haddonstone played a large part in helping us achieve this balance. Their craftsmanship is unparalleled, and it’s the little touches - the texture, the detail, the colours - that have really helped transform the space into something quite special.”

The influence of English garden design doesn’t stop there. The garden’s soft landscaping is inextricably shaped by the symmetrical parterres that can so often be found in the formal gardens of Stuart’s homeland. Buxus Sempervirens hedging circumnavigates two enclosed beds which in turn display simple plantings of euphorbia, as well as shrub, floribunda and English climbing roses in blush pink, sherbet and ivory. A pair of Cupressus sempervirens stand proudly in front of a flight of stone steps, while rambling roses can be found scrambling across the garden’s redbrick walls. But look closely and there are still plenty of Japanese garden design principles to be found. There’s a strong sense of balance in the design, as well as the ancient Asian garden design technique shakkei or “borrowed scenery”, where a distant view, in this case, the surrounding hedges and trees, is incorporated into the garden composition.

The design also adheres to the principle of naturalism, Haddonstone 01604 770711 Haddonstone.com

WATERSCAPES CREATE PART OF THE EVOLUTION OF CANARY WHARF

Waterscapes Ltd have been involved with providing irrigation services to the newly created Eden Dock within Canary Wharf. Formerly known as Middle Dock, Canary Wharf Group have formed a groundbreaking partnership with the Eden Project to create the first of many urban greening zones within the East London development.

Designed to have a significant positive impact on biodiversity and focused on connecting people with water & nature, Eden Dock is part of a much larger plan to have a green ‘spine’ running through Canary Wharf.

Being termed an ‘Urban Oasis’, Eden Dock offers a place to meet, to read, a hang-out amongst the gleaming

towers that form Canary Wharf. Open water swimmers, visitors and residents alike, will improve their wellbeing whilst using the space. Working closely with Willerby Landscapes & Applied Landscape Design, Waterscapes have created a virtually invisible watering system through each of the floating pontoons to allow all of the different planting zones to receive the water they require to stay healthy. Using Rain Bird drip products, each tree, hedge, shrub and grass is watered accurately to prevent unnecessary water usage.

Built onboard the floating pontoons, each section of the gardens was constructed with meticulous detail to provide a fluid connection between each area. Irrigation

services are routed between each pontoon through a series of hidden ducts built into the structure, and invisible to the eye.

Located below the Jubilee Plaza, the plant which operates the irrigation system is located, allowing the Client to create, implement and adapt a variety of irrigation programs using the Rain Bird IVM control system. This intelligent system monitors the condition of the controls continually, providing data on each element of the control system, keeping the Client informed of any potential problems and making fault finding simple. If you would like to know more about this project or others that Waterscapes have been involved with including the roof gardens at Google HQ in King’s Cross or the new gardens at the Natural History Museum in Kensington.

OLIVE CLAY PAVERS TRANSFORM

GARDEN

Matthew Childs Garden Design embraced the challenge to transform this garden into a multipurpose space for relaxation, dining and year-round beauty, creating a design with functional zones: a dining terrace with an outdoor grill, a pergola, a hot tub, a firepit, and a garden room.

They addressed drainage issues and replaced the central lawn with gravel planting, multi-stemmed Rhus trees, and natural pathways. The dining area features Vande Moortel’s SeptimA Olive clay pavers, chosen for their green tones that complement the planting. These pavers also ensure excellent water permeability and a lifespan of over 160 years.

This garden redesign not only revitalized the outdoor space but also won the 2022-2023 Clay Paver Award in the Residential Gardens category for its innovative approach to functionality and beauty.

POWDER COATINGS:

THE PERFECT CHOICE FOR SIGNAGE AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN

Outdoor signage is an important part of landscape design, serving as both a practical and interesting visual element. Whether you are creating wayfinding signs for a public park, accent pieces for hotel grounds, or branding signage for a commercial space, powder coatings provide the durability and aesthetic flexibility required.

As an architectural powder coater, Powdertech Corby has always included landscape architecture within its remit and has developed a wide range of unique finishes that are particularly suited to signage and other metallic landscape features.

The advantages of using powder coatings on metal range from the lightweight and structural integrity of the metal component itself, to the durability and low maintenance of the sign when in situ. There are sustainability benefits also as

powder coated metal can be easily stripped and re-used.

Versatility of finishes

As with any architectural design, the environment and intended purpose of the space influences the overall visual approach and design considerations. In green parkland spaces it is often preferable for signage to blend seamlessly with natural surroundings. Natural materials themselves have

inherent drawbacks. Wood must be continuously treated and maintained to prevent rot, mildew or warping; stone is heavy to transport and work with; terracotta is brittle and often damaged by frost. All these materials need regular cleaning, often requiring aggressive chemicals.

On the other hand, blending with the natural world through powder coating finishes brings a raft of benefits. Over many years Powdertech has perfected a wide range of finishes replicating natural materials, and the only maintenance they require is quick wash down with water every now and again.

Powdertech Wood Finish matches the natural variations in colour, grain density and grain pattern of wood. It is perfect for signage in parks, nature reserves, and rusticthemed spaces

Powdertech Stone Finish allows you to achieve the look of stone or concrete while using lightweight, durable metal for signage. These finishes are perfect for contemporary or minimalist landscape designs, offering a range of shades from warm honey-toned stone to grey and flinty rock. Significant weight saving, and low maintenance, make this a costeffective alternative to traditional stone materials.

Terracotta: Warm and earthy terracotta shades never lose their appeal for landscape projects. Powdertech Terracotta lets you combine the strength and versatility of aluminium and steel with the natural appeal of terracotta, be it Mediterranean, Eastern, rustic, or Art Deco. We also have beautiful ‘glazed terracotta’ finishes within our latest range, PowderLUX©.

Rust: Our Rust range provides the rugged look of weathered metal.

Unlike Corten the powder coated finish is 100% stable and rainwater or cleaning will not cause any runoff staining on to surrounding surfaces, skin or clothing.

Patination: As metals age, natural oxidation produces stunning colourful effects known as patinas. These include blue-green verdigris, dark chocolate shades of aged bronze and muted golds of brass. Powdertech’s Evolution/Aged Metal and PowderLUX ranges celebrate

GARDEN DESIGN

the beauty of patination, with PowderLUX offering a particularly lustrous finish.

Creating a striking contrast

For a contemporary, urban or industrial look, our Satellite and Anomatch ranges provide an appearance similar to anodising, capturing the inherent beauty of raw metal, but avoiding the environmental drawbacks of the anodising process.

For a touch of vibrancy and fun we have our Zest range, the lively appearance of the ‘Sherbet’ and ‘Crush’ colours being evident by their names.

For those seeking to design their own finish, our innovative ‘Freeform’ process offers endless possibilities. This is a unique process developed by Powdertech allowing you to transfer images from any 2-D format, to be realised in powder coating. This technique is especially valuable for signage applications and provides a creative alternative to traditional routed detailing

Durability in an outdoor setting

Outdoor signage will endure a variety of environmental challenges

including UV exposure, rain, ice and snow, and potential physical damage. Our high-performance architectural powder coatings offer

• Excellent corrosion protection

• Scratch and impact resistance

• Colour durability with UV resistance

An eco-friendly and costeffective solution

Powder coatings have environmentally friendly credentials. They also align with circular sustainable design principles, so called ‘cradle to cradle’. A sign can be stripped and re-coated with a different finish as often as required. The removal of the coating has no effect on the underlying metal. And the longlasting performance of powder coatings reduces maintenance and replacement costs, making them a cost-effective choice for both large and small projects.

Coordinating with other architectural landscape features

Powder coatings can be used for any metallic features in a landscape project, creating a harmonious effect across the whole, and achieving appearances ranging from sleek

and modern to rustic textures. Powder coated benches and seating can mirror the finishes of nearby signage as can planters, balustrades, railings, canopies and sculptural installations.

The ultimate finish for landscape designs

Tough, durable, imaginative Powdertech finishes, used on flexible, strong metal structures, offer numerous options for signage design. Their ability to withstand harsh conditions, mimic natural materials, add points of interest and integrate with other landscape features makes them an unparalleled choice for designers and architects.

Explore our range of powder coatings that deliver not just performance but also creativity, allowing your outdoor spaces to stand the test of time whilst captivating the eye.

OUR TOP 5 TIPS FOR MANAGING YOUR GARDEN MAINTENANCE

CLIENTS, MAKING A PROFIT, AND ENSURING LONGEVITY BY A.S. GARDENS

Managing garden maintenance services involves more than just keeping plants healthy, it’s about building strong relationships, maintaining profitability, and ensuring long-term success. At A.S. Gardens and Landscapes, we’ve learned how to strike the perfect balance between exceptional service and sustainable growth. Here are our top five tips for managing your clients, making a profit, and securing longevity in the industry.

1. Build Strong, Lasting Client Relationships

The foundation of a successful business is trust. Regular communication with your clients helps keep them informed about their garden’s needs, progress, and future care. When clients feel heard and valued, they are more likely to continue working with you longterm.

Tip: Personalise your service by learning about each client’s specific needs and preferences. This approach helps foster strong, longlasting relationships.

2. Offer Tailored Maintenance Plans

One-size-fits-all maintenance packages rarely work. Offering tailored services that address the unique needs of each garden helps increase client satisfaction and predict work schedules. Seasonal tasks such as pruning, mulching, and lawn care can be planned in advance, ensuring smooth operations and steady revenue.

Tip: Provide flexible pricing options and packages that suit different budgets and garden requirements, which can help attract and retain a wider range of clients.

3. Streamline Operations for Maximum Efficiency

Efficient operations are essential for profitability. Use task management tools to schedule visits, track client preferences, and keep detailed records of each job. A well-organised team with the right equipment ensures that your work is completed on time and to a high standard, reducing costs and improving service.

Tip: Invest in scheduling software to optimise your team’s time and avoid missed appointments or delays.

4. Upsell Additional Services

Offering extra services beyond routine maintenance is an excellent way to boost profitability. From seasonal planting to lawn treatments or garden redesigns, upselling provides additional value to your clients and increases your bottom line.

Tip: Train your team to identify opportunities for extra services during regular visits and present

them in a way that enhances the overall garden experience.

5. Deliver Consistent, HighQuality Service

To ensure long-term success, focus on delivering quality work consistently. Clients stay loyal when they know they can rely on you for dependable, expert care. Address issues proactively, and always maintain high standards across all aspects of the job.

Tip: Regularly review your services and gather client feedback to ensure you are consistently meeting their expectations.

Successfully managing garden maintenance clients involves excellent service, strong relationships, and efficient operations. By offering tailored care, upselling services, and focusing on quality, you can ensure profitability and longevity in the business.

Suffolk’s best kept secret offers instant wins for privacy and biodiversity net gain

Elveden Instant Hedge is an innovative solution to many garden design challenges including privacy, shelter, maturity and biodiversity net gain. With ease of installation and immediate visual appeal these fully grown hedges have a lot to offer.

The Elveden Estate in Suffolk has been growing edible and ornamental crops for over two hundred years. This family run organisation is renowned for its sustainability ethos. Wildlife conservation plays a huge role in the day-to-day running of the farm. And recently, considerable investment has been made into water-saving growing methods.

Elveden Instant Hedging was developed during the 1990s to satisfy the demand for pre-grown hedging in the construction and landscaping industries. Growing and harvesting methods continue to be refined as new innovations become available to us.

Natural hedges have the potential to nurture and support a wide range of insects, birds, mammals and reptiles. As such they are becoming more and more important in landscaping schemes where biodiversity net gain is a necessary part of the design brief. Hedges provide habitat, resting places and foraging opportunities for all manner of species, and also help to manage the microclimate within a garden.

In terms of benefits to humans, natural hedges are not only aesthetically pleasing, they provide privacy, help with

UK G R OWN

noise amelioration and can cool an area through the process of evapotranspiration. Think of them as nature’s original living green walls.

The Elveden Instant Hedge is a fully knitted, mature hedging product with a distinct difference. Not only is it 100% UK grown, unlike other hedging, the Elveden Instant Hedge has uniquely developed root system. This allows hedges to be lifted, transported and transplanted at any time of the year without the risk of root shock. There are no pots, troughs or pallets to dispose of either as our growing system has been developed to minimise waste.

Landscape designers and landscapers can choose from a diverse range of hedging types and heights. We offer evergreen varieties, native species, hedges with eye-catching foliage and thorny hedges for added site security. No matter what aesthetic you wish to create, or what challenges you are facing on site, there is an Elveden Instant Hedge type to suit your project.

Additionally the team at Elveden offers a contract growing service for customers with specific needs in terms of species, size, shape or order volume.

TIME TO DITCH TIMBER AND SWITCH TO COMPOSITE

Composite panels are an increasingly popular alternative to timber, offering a combination of lasting looks and low maintenance. Here, Patrick Guest, Managing Director at Birkdale, discusses the advantages of composite fence panel solutions.

Timber panels have been a firm favourite amongst fencers and homeowners for some years, thanks to their relative ease of installation, aesthetics and low cost. However, with these positives come drawbacks such as their short lifespan, their relative fragility and the maintenance they require. In contrast, composite panels offer a longer lasting, lower maintenance option that is just as affordable.

Lifespan

While timber fence panels deliver a limited lifespan of up to 10 years with regular treatment and

maintenance, a composite panel is engineered to resist the worst of the elements. Birkdale’s panels are made from either a mixture of virgin and recycled high-density polypropylene (HDPE) and rice husks, or woodplastic composite (WPC) in the case of the DuraPost VISTA® panel range. These sustainable solutions won’t rot and aren’t susceptible to damage from insects. For these reasons, Birkdale guarantees its composite products for 15 years.

Durability

To make timber panels light and cost-efficient, they are often cut very thin, increasing their susceptibility to wind and impact damage. Composite panels are created with the intention of maximising strength to weight ratio. Galvanised steel rails above and below the panel are nanocoated and powder coated for extra protection and provide the

necessary rigidity, enabling the panel to withstand the worst of the British weather.

Low maintenance

Unlike timber panels, composite solutions do not need to be treated because the WPC or recycled HDPE used to make them won’t warp, rot or splinter. Products like Birkdale’s DuraPost VISTA® panels are also UV stabilised, meaning the colour of the panel will not fade over time, keeping the fence looking fresh and new.

DuraPost VISTA® panels also deliver on price, meaning more homeowners and contractors alike can now reap the benefits of this contemporary fencing solution.

To find out more about Birkdale’s range of composite alternatives to timber, including the new DuraPost VISTA® composite panels, visit www.durapost.co.uk.

HARROWDEN’S SCIENCELED APPROACH TO SEED PRODUCTION

Wildflowers are not just a beautiful addition to our landscapes, they play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity, supporting pollinators and the overall health of ecosystems. Robust seed production is essential for ensuring the availability of authentic, high-quality wildflower seeds with documented traceability. Harrowden has been producing Meadowmat wildflower turf since the early 2000s but is now taking complete control of its seed production throughout the lifecycle. Harrowden’s new Wildflower Development Programme combines PhD level scientific leadership with forward-looking ecological approaches and decades of growing expertise. Harrowden are now growing their own plants, processing their own seeds and bringing them to market.

Harrowden’s effective traceability systems unlocks valuable

information for informed decision-making in wildflower seed production. The Wildflower Development Team work with data on the performance of different seed lots to adapt cultivation practices and make strategic choices to improve overall production efficiency. REIMAGINE OUTDOOR SPACES WITH ADVANCED DECKING

When focusing on garden designs, one way the space can be creatively reimagined, is to add in various decking areas, which become the foundation of the outdoor design. Be it patios, breakaway areas, a garden pergola or even garden pathways, these great designs do start from the ground up. Decking should not be considered just an addition, but rather the base of the design that sets the tone for the entire space.

Decking, and building materials in general, are evolving and revolutionizing continuously, so careful research assists when planning your next outdoor oasis. You may be doing a renovation where there is an old wooden deck, already in place. However, a simple replacement may not be the best

long-term option to keep clients or yourself happy, for a variety of reasons.

Wood decks are actually now deemed inferior to composite decks, thanks to innovative composite engineering that pushes boundaries for better results.

Composite decking’s definition, easily demystifies the why ie: “ A manufactured product comprised of a mix of recycled plastics and organic fibers.” So these are manmade alternatives which outperform traditional wood. Benefits of composite now include enhanced and more realistic aesthetics, better resilience to the elements, kinder on the environment and even beneficial on the pocket over the long run.

Therefore when planning either a repurposed or new outdoor space, composite should be the choice as it requires little to no maintenance, available in a broader variety of colors and is definitely more environmentally friendly. Eva-Last, a premium supplier of decking in the UK, manufactures using bamboo fibers instead of wood fibers and and uses recycled plastic - that otherwise may have ended up in our landfills. Eva-Last offer three different composite decking brands, Pioneer featuring high-resolution digital replications of timber, Apex and Infinity, all with different features, benefits and price points.

So by choosing advanced composite decking such as Eva-Last, landscape architects can create a durable, stylish and sustainable base upon which every other design element can be seamlessly integrated, ready to soak up the sun.

RETHINK OUTDOOR STORAGE WITH AN INNOVATIVE UNDERDECK DRAINAGE SYSTEM

From small additions to total renovations, high demand from customers interested in garden projects is expected to continue in 2025.

One of the easiest – and often overlooked – ways to add value and function to an outdoor area is to create a usable, dry storage space under a deck.

As long as the space is tall enough for a homeowner to gain access and properly protected from the elements, it can be used to store virtually anything. And who couldn’t use a little more storage space?

Simon Thomas, of Simon Thomas Deck & Design, said: “For years, homeowners – not to mention architects, builders and contractors –have neglected to take advantage of under-deck spaces.”

“And for those that have used the space under a deck for storage, odds are it hasn’t been pretty – especially in light of our often wet and rainy UK climate. I’ve certainly seen my share of outdoor storage spaces filled with deteriorating items covered in mud, mould and mildew due to being exposed to too much moisture.”

“Creating a useable space beneath a deck is one of my favourite add-ons to any garden project.”

A deck drainage system, such as Trex® RainEscape®, will protect the space beneath decking – by keeping it dry, ensuring moisture never builds up beneath it or within the supporting studwork - creating a functional storage space.

Once protected from the elements, this new space can be used for storing bikes, lawnmowers, gardening tools, patio furniture and other outdoor essentials. Or, if used as an additional living space it could be fitted with everything from furniture and decorative accessories to televisions, speakers, lights and heaters. The wiring for these components is hidden between the deck surface and the soffit ceiling.

Simon, who is also a TrexPro installer, said: “Sometimes, it’s what you don’t see that makes all the difference. That’s the innovative advantage of a deck drainage system which can add value and functionality to an outdoor living space without adding significant cost.”

There are endless uses for underdeck storage, here are a few of the possibilities that make the project

such a useful installation:

1. Store off-season items. As homeowners put away the barbecue paraphernalia and deck chairs from the summer, they’ll be glad you thoughtfully finished the space under their deck.

2. Keep sports items clean and ready for action. Under-deck storage is perfect for bicycles, sports gear and all those camping chairs.

3. Convert the storage into a playhouse for the kids. On those days when the kids need to get out of the house, but it’s windy or cold or rainy, your customers will love the under-deck playhouse you built.

THE ORCHESTRA PARK: SOBA

The Orchestra Park in Kunshan’s Huaqiao Economic Development Zone covers 8,500 square meters between two high-density residential areas and along the confluence of two rivers. With mature camphor and dawn redwood trees and nearby wetlands, the project faced the challenge of integrating a skateboarding area, preserving the natural woodland, and adding essential amenities like restrooms. The design prioritizes ecosystem preservation, creating a functional, modern park for all age groups while providing a green, natural retreat. This project transforms an urban vacant lot into a vibrant recreational space that serves the public and is beloved by the community. We aim to

create a livable green space that meets residents’ diverse needs while providing a rich natural experience—a green oasis and social hub in the neighborhood.

The Jiangnan Silk and Bamboo music tradition, featuring instruments like the bamboo flute and erhu, is known for its graceful melodies and was recognized as part of Kunshan’s intangible cultural heritage in 2007. Inspired by this cultural heritage, our design incorporates smooth lines and natural forms that reflect the rhythms of the music. The park’s layout uses curves inspired by these instruments, blending recreation with a three-dimensional representation of the music, offering

residents a harmonious mix of nature and culture.

We fully respect the existing conditions of the site, aiming to preserve the natural woodland and the undulating terrain to the greatest extent. The overall layout is structured around the symbolic forms of silk and bamboo, with a circular jogging path running through the entire park, connecting Xugongqiao Road and the two adjacent residential communities to the north and south. This path also divides the park into two main areas: a riverside greenbelt and a vibrant recreational zone.

The design of the riverside greenbelt prioritizes the preservation of existing woodland and vegetation,

using a minimal intervention approach. We added a waterside viewing platform along the riverbank and created winding exploration paths under the natural canopy, featuring playful soundinteractive installations to enhance visitors’ experiences. This greenbelt seamlessly integrates natural woodland, planting design, and functional spaces, resulting in a layered park environment with a balanced mix of open and dense areas, distinct seasonal changes, and a clear thematic focus. This design provides residents with a lush space for relaxation and a unique opportunity to connect with nature.

The vibrant recreational area utilizes the site’s natural topography to transform the two-dimensional outlines of Jiangnan silk and bamboo instruments into an

abstract three-dimensional experience. It features a series of unique interactive facilities, including a skatepark, climbing area, fitness playground, open-air theater, bamboo grove pathways, musical fountain plaza, and a small music classroom. These spaces appeal to residents of all ages, encouraging exploration and engagement with the environment.

The Orchestra Park integrates diverse activities while preserving Huaqiao’s cultural heritage. This community park offers spaces for viewing, leisure, and exploration, quickly becoming a favorite destination for local residents. With activities for all ages, it serves as both a natural retreat and a vibrant gathering place.

PERMEABLE PAVING ACCESS ROUTE INSTALLED FOR BOSTON BARRIER FLOOD DEFENCES

Completed in 2021, The Boston flood defence scheme is a £124 million project which provides improved flood protection to over 14,300 homes and businesses, including around 226 at risk listed buildings. Designed to safeguard the town against tidal surges such as the 2013 event which flooded over 820 homes and businesses, the scheme protects against forecast sea level rises for the next 100 years and provides 1 in 300 year storm event protection.

A road for utilities vehicles was required to enable maintenance teams to access the barrier from the top of the embankment and adjacent to the flood defence wall. The Environment Agency also required a natural grass/wildflower surface since the road forms part of the Macmillan Way walking route, a 290 mile footpath linking Boston to Abbotsbury in Dorset with provision for disability access.

The right bank of the project incorporates 4,300m2 of ABG’s Sudsgrid 40 cellular paving along with Abgrid, Geogrid and Terrex geotextile to complete a 600m long reinforced grass service road. Sudsgrid® is a cellular plastic porous paving solution for use in Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). Sudsgrid is suitable for a wide range of trafficked applications where a stabilised, free-draining grass or gravel surface is required.

SMART, SCALABLE SUDS: STRENGTH IN NUMBERS

Climate change and urbanisation are pushing our drainage networks to the edge of their capabilities –and beyond. A combination of a preference for impermeable surfaces, population growth and more intense rainfall events (owing to climate change) has left our sewer networks struggling to cope. The result? More frequent surface water flooding, overwhelmed wastewater treatment works and harmful combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges into rivers and seas.

Innovation for Better Flood Resilience

But there is a smart, scalable solution: Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). When implemented at scale, discrete SuDS interventions add up to an effect that is more than the sum of their parts, providing a transformative positive impact on urban water management capabilities – without the cost and long-term disruption of overhauling existing sewer infrastructure.

The solution isn’t just about expanding capacity, it’s about working smarter, and using nature-based systems to deliver wider benefits as well as solve the immediate issue of easily overwhelmed sewers. SuDS offer a way to manage water sustainably, easing the burden on traditional sewer systems while simultaneously delivering improved environmental and social outcomes.

Scalable, Sustainable and Effective

When deployed strategically at scale, small SuDS interventions – such as permeable paving, raingardens,

bioswales, green roofs and tree pits –can deliver huge benefits.

These features help slow, store and filter stormwater at source, preventing it from overwhelming drainage networks. The advantages include:

• Reduced flood risk: small SuDS absorb and attenuate stormwater before it reaches sewers, reducing surface water flooding.

• Improved water quality: SuDS filter out pollutants, preventing contaminants from washing into rivers and watercourses.

• Quick, low-disruption installation: unlike major drainage infrastructure projects, SuDS can be installed rapidly with minimal disruption to local communities.

• Enhanced urban biodiversity: green SuDS features provide vital habitats for pollinators and other wildlife, improving ecological health.

• Better public spaces: green SuDS create more attractive, cooler and quieter streetscapes, improving urban liveability.

Proven Performance, Engineered for Success

The effectiveness of SuDS is no longer theoretical, it’s proven. Independently tested systems, developed by hydraulic engineering specialists, demonstrate that SuDS can handle significant stormwater volumes while maintaining efficiency over time.

For example, our SuDSPOD product has been undergoing testing by EUGINE (Enhancing Urban Green Infrastructure via kNowledge

Exchange) – a collaborative project between The University of Sheffield and Severn Trent Water – and the interim results have highlighted SuDSPod as a highly effective attenuation solution for managing stormwater at the downpipe level.

The trial demonstrated that the SuDSPod provides significant peak flow attenuation, reducing peak inflow by up to 5.9 l/min for a 46.5 m² catchment during an M10-240 rainfall event. The system maintained consistent performance over the four-month trial period, with no reported maintenance issues. Additionally, its robust hydraulic model has been validated against real-world data, confirming its ability to predict and manage water flow effectively.

These findings position the SuDSPod as a reliable, scalable and lowmaintenance solution for sustainable urban drainage, making it an attractive option for widespread deployment where there is a need for pressure to be taken off the existing sewer network to reduce surfacewater flooding and CSO discharges.

SuDS are not just a ‘nice-to-have’, they are a necessity for futureproofing urban infrastructure against climate change. To find out more about the proven capabilities of our SuDSPOD, and other discrete SuDS solutions suitable for deploying at scale, contact us today.

GREEN-TECH SUPPLY PLANTERS AND IRRIGATION TO REJUVENATE THE CONNAH’S QUAY WAR MEMORIAL

The Background:

The Connah’s Quay War Memorial, situated in Wales, serves as a poignant tribute to the residents of Connah’s Quay and Shotton who were killed or reported missing during the First and Second World Wars. Flintshire County Council aimed to enhance this memorial site by creating a serene garden space that would provide an area for reflection and honour the memory of those who served.

The Solution

As part of the UK Government Shared Prosperity funding allotted to the Town Centre Investment Programme, Flintshire County Council undertook the project to rejuvenate the memorial’s surroundings. The initiative comprised ten projects aimed at improving urban spaces across Flintshire. As such, the memorial garden at Connah’s Quay War Memorial was identified. Concurrently, the Interservice Committee approached the council for funding to clean the memorial and to add names of soldiers who had not been previously recognised.

This provided the council with the opportunity to consider creating a memorial garden that combines the names in the best way possible. It was decided to use planters around the cenotaph to create a space for reflection and year-round interest for the site. The species identified in the planters offer substantial biodiversity benefits to the area.

To achieve this, Flintshire County Council collaborated with EE Civils, based in Holywell, to install the

bespoke planters and Mona Tank 24 irrigation systems and fill them with Green-tree topsoil, all supplied by Green-tech. This collaborative effort sought to create a peaceful garden area using planters that would contribute to the site’s visual appeal and biodiversity.

Products Used

Green-tech supplied:

• 30 bespoke planters

• 30 Mona Tank 24 Irrigation systems

• 4 Bulk Bags of Green-tree Topsoil

Charlotte Wilcock, Project Development Officer at Flintshire County Council, advises, “Greentech was selected as the range of planters on offer worked with our requirements and timescales. Our Green-tech advisor, James Renfrew, was supportive in advising and quoting for the required products and discussing the project and its requirements. Flintshire County Council had previously used Greentech for another project, and having been pleased with the results and services from that project, there was confidence that this would be repeated on this project.”

The bespoke planters were chosen to provide a specific aesthetic that appealed to the project’s stakeholders while ensuring

durability for long-term use. The inclusion of the Mona irrigation system was recommended to facilitate the ongoing maintenance of the planters and enhance their growth and sustainability. The 100% water-efficient, subterranean plant irrigation system acts as a reservoir to hold water and distribute it to the plant’s roots as and when required.

The Outcome

The transformation of the Connah’s Quay War Memorial into a beautiful garden space was well-received by the community. The planters, now filled with lush greenery, have drawn positive feedback from residents.

Ian Dunbar, Chair of the Interservice Committee, remarked, “We have had many good comments from the public regarding the planters filled with plants, and have a request from some schools to sponsor a planter and look after it, which is brilliant.”

Conclusion

The successful installation of the planters at Connah’s Quay War Memorial highlights the positive impact of collaborative efforts in community regeneration. Green-tech’s commitment to quality products ensured the delivery of a meaningful project that enhances the memorial site, supporting biodiversity and community involvement. This project is a testament to how thoughtful landscaping can create serene spaces for reflection and remembrance.

URBAN REGENERATION BY ATARCHITECTURE

The project rejuvenates a natural water lily pond, creates a new river edge along the Brahmaputra, and seamlessly connects the site to the adjacent heritage museum, fostering public interaction.

The Brahmaputra, one of the world’s widest and longest rivers, serves as the lifeline of northeast India.

Perched on its banks, the site offers views of an island adorned with an ancient temple, a boat corridor, and a cable car. A 10-meter elevation difference between the river’s high water mark and the ground is navigated through gently cascading terraces and pathways that respect the natural contours, minimizing cut-and-fill. Terraces intertwine

with the riparian vegetation like interlocking fingertips and increase biomass through a combination of gabions and recharge pits that improve soil health. Trees and shrubs spanning 250,000 square meters rejuvenate native species, attract wildlife, and shape an openair botanical gallery.

The larger piece of land between the Brahmaputra River and the lake has been transformed into curvilinear spaces that provide a variety of recreational opportunities for tourists and residents

The project revitalizes the Padam Pukhuri—meaning “lotus pond”— originally 1.5–2 meters below ground level. A pixelated, stepped pavilion follows the site’s natural contours, providing both a recreational platform and access to the water and its aquatic flora and fauna.

The foundation uses gabions to preserve the natural groundwater flow. One edge of the site runs parallel to a historic road, formerly a major artery of old Guwahati, now home to the Assam Post Office. A long corridor enhances the narrow existing footpath, with subdued grey granite tones forming a calm backdrop to the vibrant hues of nature.

The design improves the mobility of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists while creating open, breathable spaces in this densely populated neighborhood. A partly sunken car park serves both the museum and the riverside. Walkable,

interconnected, meandering paths connect the Padam Pukhuri, the courts, and the riverbanks.

As a pilot initiative for riverfront development undertaken by the local urban development authority, the model design emphasizes durable and sustainable details that can be standardized and easily replicated for the phased expansion of the riverfront. With the completion of the first phase, now open to the public, upcoming phases will introduce key features including a riverfront restaurant and another Padam Pukhuri with more intimate, curvilinear stepped pavilions.

TREE RELOCATION: PRESERVING NATURE’S BEAUTY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

Since 1963, Civic Trees have been at the forefront of tree relocation throughout the UK, from importing the very first Vermeer tree spade into Europe, to designing and constructing the Newman Frame which is now used worldwide.

Civic Trees are always looking to pioneer new techniques that aid the relocation of trees.

Tree relocation is a concept that involves uprooting trees from one location and transplanting them to another. With current events surrounding environmental issues, relocating trees is even more important now than ever before. By relocating trees instead of cutting them down, we can preserve nature’s beauty while also promoting sustainability.

We are proud of our reputation for efficient, cost effective and reliable tree relocation throughout the UK. You can be confident that through our exemplary commitment to staff

training and development, our work meets the highest technical and safety standards.

We believe that a tree is only as good as the way it is handled, planted and maintained. Ground preparation and aftercare are crucial to the successful establishment of the tree.

Before we start the tree move process we arrange a site visit with our client and assess the tree’s health, size, and root system. We also create a site specific risk assessment to ensure the whole operation is carried out safely.

Our team of experts use specialised equipment to excavate the tree with minimal damage to its root structure. The tree is then carefully transported to its new location,

where it is replanted and nurtured to ensure its successful adaptation.

Our experienced team will know and understand the benefits and methods of loading and unloading a tree using the correct lifting techniques in order not to stress the tree or root ball. This is imperative for the longevity of the tree’s life.

In conclusion, tree relocation is an environmentally friendly method that allows us to preserve nature’s beauty while supporting urban growth. By carefully uprooting and relocating trees, we can maintain the valuable benefits they provide to our communities.

Civic Trees prides itself in paying great attention to the health and well being of our clients most prized asset “THE TREE”.

BESPOKE PAVING SOLUTIONS FROM BLYKO: ELEVATING

THE URBAN LANDSCAPE

Urban Spaces and the Importance of Paving

Urban spaces are defined not just by their architecture but also by the surfaces that connect and protect them. Paving is a vital element in creating environments that are both functional and visually appealing, whether in a bustling commercial district, a tranquil residential neighbourhood, or a heritage site in need of sensitive restoration.

Innovative Solutions for Modern Urban Challenges

In today’s urban landscape, the evolution of paving techniques has addressed challenges such as water management and safety. Modern solutions include permeable systems that allow rainwater to filter through the surface, easing the burden on drainage systems and helping to replenish groundwater. At the same time, enhanced finishes and textures

contribute to better visibility and improved slip resistance, ensuring that the practical needs of heavy pedestrian traffic and diverse weather conditions are met without compromising design.

Durability and Long-Term Performance

Durability and long-term performance are equally essential. Advances in material science have enabled the creation of surfaces that retain their vibrant colours and textures over time while resisting wear and weathering. Such attributes are critical for maintaining the integrity and aesthetic appeal of paved areas, whether in public infrastructure projects or private developments.

Our Comprehensive Paving Portfolio

Recognising these diverse needs,

we at Blyko offer a comprehensive range of paving solutions designed to suit a variety of applications. Our portfolio includes options that cater to sustainable urban drainage, highperformance safety requirements, and the demands of both traditional and contemporary aesthetics. Our products are engineered to deliver both form and function, ensuring that every paved area contributes seamlessly to its environment.

Bespoke Paving: Our Tailor-Made Solutions

What truly distinguishes us is our commitment to bespoke paving. Beyond offering standard products, we collaborate closely with architects, developers, and landscape designers to create tailormade solutions that address specific project requirements. Whether it’s customising the colour, finish, or dimensions, this personalised approach ensures that every project receives exactly what it needs to stand out and integrate perfectly with its surroundings.

Conclusion: Crafting Unique Urban Spaces

In summary, paving is much more than a surface treatment—it is an integral part of urban design that balances functionality, safety, and visual appeal. With a wide array of ready-to-use and customisable options, we not only meet the evolving demands of modern infrastructure but also empower creators to craft spaces that are truly unique.

ECOPROTEC INTRODUCES ‘JUST WASHED LOOK’ PORCELAIN PAVING ENHANCER

ECOPROTEC has launched its new Porcelain Paving Enhancer – a waterbased treatment for exterior and interior porcelain tiles and pavers. As well as giving tiles a ‘just washed look’, the new self-shine enhancer also provides practical benefits, being highly resistant to foot traffic, general wear and stains, and also promoting easier maintenance. The new eco-friendly treatment also provides UV-resistance and, whilst glossy in nature, causes minimal change to a tile’s slip resistance properties.

On clean, dry and residue-free surfaces, ECOPROTEC Porcelain Paving Enhancer is applied with a foam roller, sealant applicator pad or paint brush until an even, thin film is created. The treatment should be left to dry for one hour. For a more enhanced appearance, further coats

can be applied at rights angles – and with an hour’s drying time between each application - to a maximum of four coats. The treatment can also be used on existing tiles and pavers which should first be cleaned with ECOPROTEC Intensive Cleaner and then rinsed and left to dry for 24 hours before application.

Being water-based, the enhancer can be applied over residual moisture and is safe to use in unventilated spaces. It is also breathable, so will not trap moisture within the tile or substrate. To maintain the glossy aesthetic, tiles and pavers can be renovated by stripping the original coating using ECOPROTEC Joint Residue Remover and reapplying every 2-3 years. Surfaces should be routinely swept and regularly mopped using ECOPROTEC General Cleaner.

ECOPROTEC Porcelain Paving Enhancer is available in one litre and five litre units and has an approximate coverage of 30-40 m2 per litre, per coat, depending on the tile texture. To find out more, please visit https://www.ecoprotec.co.uk or contact the ECOPROTEC Technical Team on 01823 662722 or email technical@ecoprotec.co.uk

ADD KERB APPEAL BY ENHANCING AESTHETICS WITH CONCRETE FENCING

We all know that kerb appeal helps not only to sell houses but also helps with look and feel of an area. Choosing a precast concrete fence system for your next project could be the ideal solution if you are looking to enhance the exterior of your scheme with a product that is durable, low maintenance and goodlooking.

Paul

Cartwright, Business

Development Director at Elite

Precast Concrete discusses how a fencing system can improve the aesthetics of your outside environment, while also increasing security and value.

Beautiful looks

The intricate masonry impression of a Verti-Crete fence is more appealing than vinyl, wood or chain-link, with different finishes available, the remarkable beauty of hand-pressed work

With a finish on each side, the installed product looks great whichever side of the fence you are sitting. From brickwork

to cobblestone, Verti-Crete complements your development’s architecture and landscaping, adding looks, security and value.

Privacy

In a world of noise, the tall structure and solid panels can offer you peace and quiet, so you can finally hold a celebration without your local neighbourhood inviting themselves over.

Durability

Unlike fragile materials such as wood and vinyl fencing that can suffer from denting, corrosion or fading from UV damage, a precast concrete wall will truly stand the test of time. The unbeatable durability of Verti-Crete walls is a long-term investment that saves you both time and costs.

Easy installation

Hollow-core posts are placed on a concrete base with panels set to fit securely between the posts. After each section is squared up and levelled, the columns are filled with concrete to secure the connection.

This faster and lighter methods mean less costs are incurred for heavy equipment.

Security

Keeping unwanted guests at bay, VertiCrete walling and fencing secures your surroundings with tall decorative panels that detract unwanted visitors and help keep you safe.

Exceptional value

Precast concrete is an affordable option to many construction materials, such as wood, vinyl or stone masonry and a Verti-Crete wall involves less labour, less equipment and ultimately, less cost.

Best of all, our fences and walls will not fade in the sun and can withstand hard weather conditions, so they’ll look just as the day they were installed.

TRANSFORMING WHITFIELD GARDENS: WOODSCAPE’S ROLE IN A LONDON LANDMARK

Whitfield Gardens, a cherished public space in the heart of London, has long served as a vital retreat amid the city’s bustling streets. This urban sanctuary, located off Tottenham Court Road, has undergone various enhancements over the years to maintain its welcoming and functional appeal. A key part of one such transformation was the involvement of Woodscape, a leading British manufacturer of hardwood street furniture. Their bespoke designs and commitment to sustainable urban furniture played an essential role in shaping the space into a more inviting and resilient public realm.

Enhancing a Historic Space

Whitfield Gardens is not just a park; it is a historically significant site, home to the iconic Fitzrovia Mural, originally painted in 1980. The mural stands as a tribute to the area’s rich cultural and social history. Over time, the gardens have required

sensitive refurbishments to ensure they continue serving as a vibrant space for relaxation and social interaction.

To align with this vision, Woodscape provided a series of beautifully crafted hardwood seating installations that offer both practicality and aesthetic value. The introduction of these bespoke benches has significantly improved the usability of the space, encouraging visitors to linger and enjoy their surroundings.

High-Quality Hardwood for Durability and Beauty

A defining feature of Woodscape’s work in Whitfield Gardens is its use of high-quality, sustainably sourced, naturally very durable hardwood (NVDH). The seating and street furniture were designed to seamlessly integrate with the garden’s natural elements, complementing its spaces while

providing durable, long-lasting solutions suited to the demands of an urban environment.

Woodscape’s expertise in crafting street furniture from naturally very durable hardwood ensures longevity even in high-traffic areas. NVDH develops a graceful patina over time, blending harmoniously with the surroundings while requiring minimal maintenance. This makes it an ideal choice for public spaces like Whitfield Gardens, where aesthetics and functionality must coexist. The bespoke hardwood furniture, with concealed lighting by Michael Grubb Studio, brings the area a rich glow and a sense that the space is warm and inviting, both for the people living and working nearby and visitors to the area. Indeed, the passersby have already made great use of the seating, with it providing a much-needed resting stop in their busy lives.

Custom Designs for a Unique Urban Experience

Every project Woodscape undertakes is tailored to the specific needs of the space, and Whitfield Gardens was no exception. The design of the seating elements was customised to fit within the garden’s layout while maximising comfort and usability. Thoughtfully positioned seating areas allow for both social gatherings and solitary moments of reflection, making the space more adaptable to different visitor needs.

Beyond seating, Woodscape also supplied planters and bollards, all made from the same high-quality materials. These additions help define the space, guiding pedestrian movement while enhancing the garden’s overall aesthetic appeal.

The planters, in particular, play a key role in reinforcing the greenery of Whitfield Gardens, contributing to an environment that feels both natural and curated.

With much of the furniture being movable, the space is also flexible for all manner of events, to further encourage the community to cherish the beauty of outdoor living, even in the bustling centre of London.

Sustainability at the Forefront

One of the hallmarks of Woodscape’s work is its commitment to sustainability. The hardwood used in their products is responsibly sourced from FSC® certified forests, ensuring that urban enhancements do not come at the expense of the environment. The longevity of their furniture also

STREET FURNITURE

aligns with sustainability goals by reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimising material waste.

The Impact of Thoughtful Urban Design

The transformation of Whitfield Gardens highlights the importance of well-designed public spaces in enhancing urban life. Woodscape’s involvement demonstrates how high-quality street furniture can elevate the experience of a place, making it more accessible, comfortable, and visually appealing. By integrating natural materials into the urban landscape, they have helped create a space that invites relaxation, fosters community interaction, and respects the site’s historical significance.

The project also showcases the broader role of designers and manufacturers in shaping cities. Public spaces are essential for wellbeing, and investing in thoughtful, durable design ensures they remain valuable assets for years to come. Woodscape’s expertise in this area has cemented its reputation as a leader in the field, trusted by architects, designers and planners to deliver outstanding results.

Looking Ahead

As cities evolve, the need for high-quality, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing public realm improvements remains crucial. Woodscape’s work in Whitfield Gardens serves as an inspiring example of how craftsmanship and thoughtful design can transform urban spaces for the better.

THE SUSTAINABLE REINVENTION OF ROTTERDAM’S LAGE BERGSE BOS

In the greater urban environment of Rotterdam, Lage Bergse Bos is a popular recreational area due to its variation of forests, open meadows, and water features. Though much used, the area has changed little since its inception in the 1970s, with facilities becoming outdated. And as in many other locations in the Netherlands, ash tree dieback (caused by fungal infection) has resulted in significant tree removal and deforestation. With plans for a new tunnelled A16 highway to

run semi-submerged through the site, this combination of factors provided a catalyst for a broader reconsideration of the Lage Bergse Bos with improvements including new planting, paths, water amenities, recreational facilities, and Streetlife site furnishings.

Landscape architecture firm Hosper developed a new vision for Lage Bergse Bos that prepares the area for the future environmentally, spatially, and

recreationally. The improved Lage Bergse Bos has three sub-areas: the Bosrand (Forest strip), the Eilandenrijk (Archipelago), and the Park. These sub-areas have distinctive characteristics.

Firstly, areas of the Bosrand deforested by ash dieback and disease have been planted with a sustainable mix of different tree, shrub, and meadow species that better prevent diseases in the forest and result in a more

robust, climate-proof forest for the future. Further, by restructuring paths and removing excessive parking spaces, the forest feeling of the Bosrand has been strengthened. A route winding through the area connects educational play elements that bring children into contact with nature while new furnishings along the trail provide places to sit and relax. The Rough&Ready line from Streetlife was selected as the furnishing family for the Lage Bergse Bos to enhance the natural feeling atmosphere. Here, Rough&Ready Linear Benches with FSC® certified hardwood in combination with steel supports powder coated in a rustic looking finish were selected.

Next, the Eilandenrijk is an ecologically dynamic place with variation between wet and dry created by raising the water level to create an ecologically attractive swamp forest. A walking route connects small islands with bridges and passes special experience objects, including a long boardwalk, a fauna tower for birds, bats, and insects, and matching Rough&Ready seating elements positioned to take advantage of special views.

Finally, the Park is located around the pond and on the hill of the new semi-submerged A16 highway tunnel, which has been greened with trees, shrubs, and meadow species. The park area features open areas with lawns of grass, alternating with

flowery grassland and solitary trees. Each lawn is given a type of tree with a special characteristic, which distinguishes the lawns from each other. A paved Park route runs along the water and is easily accessible. The park route passes the various lawns and gives a varied picture of flowery grasslands, neat lawns, and the forest. Additionally, Rough&Ready Picnic Sets and custom Rough&Ready Curved Benches provide places to meet, barbeque, and relax by the water. The Park also includes two existing restaurants.

Yellow powder-coated birds are hanging in the trees along all routes as markers. Every route has its own recognisable bird.

Hosper notes that multiple parties were involved throughout the design process for the Lage Bergse Bos improvements. These parties include multiple levels of government, stakeholders including the restaurants, social organisations including a nature club, local entrepreneurs and area residents.

By enhancing an already valuable public space using sustainable forestry and water management concepts and upgrading areas for recreational use, the Lage Bergse Bos remains a much-loved amenity now reinvented for present and future times.

THE PICTORIAL MEADOWS SUCCESSIONAL FLOWERING SOLUTION:

MAXIMISING IMPACT WITH MINIMAL MAINTENANCE

As landscape professionals, we are driven by a passion for creating spaces that are as functional as they are beautiful. Our goal? To design environments that are sustainable, visually captivating, and responsive to the needs of both nature and people. One of the most significant challenges is delivering landscapes that remain visually appealing across multiple months without constant intervention. This is where a successional flowering meadow offers a practical and highly effective solution.

Successional Flowering: The

Backbone of Pictorial Meadows Products

Successional flowering is the art of designing plant communities where different species bloom in a carefully planned sequence, creating dynamic and evolving displays of colour and texture throughout the growing season. This approach can

offer year-round appeal, ecological benefits and reduced maintenance. Successional flowering is core to the design of all our meadow products: annual seeds, perennial seeds and perennial meadow turf.

Pictorial Meadows has perfected this concept through meticulous research, understanding not only the timing of each bloom, but also how plants interact. The expertly designed seed mixes, such as the Classic annual mix and Pastel annual mix, ensure seamless transitions between flowering stages. The Classic mix begins with low-growing blooms like fairy toadflax and California poppy, followed by midheight poppies and cornflowers, culminating with warm hues of tickseed in autumn. Each flowering stage is slightly taller, concealing the spent flowers of the previous one. The Pastel mix, by contrast, offers a gentler palette, starting with lacelike bishop’s flower with pale pink poppies, and finishing with lateseason pink and white cosmos. Both mixes extend the flowering season from early spring to late autumn, and even into December in milder climates.

Practical Benefits for Landscape Professionals

For landscape professionals, successional flowering mixes provide the perfect balance of low maintenance and high impact, making them an ideal choice. These mixes establish quickly, with germination visible within 7–10 days and flowers appearing as

early as six weeks after sowing. The carefully orchestrated progression of taller flowering stems throughout the season naturally suppresses weeds by shading and masking them, minimising the need for time-consuming weeding and maintenance.

At the end of the season, management is straightforward. For annuals, the meadow can simply be cut down and left as a surface mulch. For perennials from seed or turf, cut and rake off. Leaving it standing over winter provides ecological benefits such as seed-rich food for birds and shelter for insects, adding another layer of value for clients focused on sustainability.

Choosing a successional flowering mix not only ensures an evolving display of colour and texture but also reduces the workload, freeing up time and resources while delivering outstanding results.

HOW HORTICULTURAL HUBS ARE TRANSFORMING URBAN DESIGN

AND SUSTAINABILITY

In the fast-paced world of landscaping and construction, time and efficiency have never been more important. Modern landscaping professionals, from landscapers and urban planners to landscape architects, are increasingly seeking innovative solutions that streamline their work while promoting sustainability. At the forefront of this movement is Palmer Nurseries, with their horticultural hub in Leeds that’s redefining how landscaping professionals access essential materials and services.

Palmer Nurseries offers much more than materials – it’s a central resource where landscapers,

contractors, and designers can find horticultural trade supplies, recycling services, rental spaces, and even ready-to-go instant hedging solutions. This one-stopshop approach is transforming how projects are delivered across the region.

Efficiency at the core of every service

With demand growing for reliable, high-quality supplies and services, Palmer Nurseries has developed a model designed for maximum convenience and sustainability. Their offering includes: Turf Depot: In partnership with

Inturf, supplying premium-quality, eco-friendly turf across West Yorkshire. Ideal for sports grounds, schools, and community spaces, this turf absorbs more carbon dioxide, maintains vibrant colour year-round, and withstands harsh weather conditions.

Instant Hedge: Supplied by Elveden, offering ready-to-go, mature hedges for immediate impact. Ideal for privacy, boundary definition, and ornamental landscaping, these

hedges are available in 17 species and can be planted year-round without root shock

Natural Stone & Porcelain Flags: In partnership with Strata, offering a range of high-quality natural stone and porcelain flags for landscaping projects. Perfect for pathways, patios, and public spaces, available in single sizes or mixed-size project packs.

Recycling Station: A green waste recycling facility that processes arboriculture residues, soils, and demolition waste into biomass fuel, compost, and usable aggregates. Drive-thru Concrete Station: The

first of its kind in Yorkshire, offering on-demand concrete, mortar, and screed with no minimum order and a fast, hassle-free collection service.

This focus on efficiency allows customers to save time, reduce waste, and minimise environmental impact – crucial for projects of all sizes, from garden makeovers to commercial developments.

Real-world testimonials highlight the difference Palmer Nurseries makes for its customers:

• Efficiency for Contractors: Landscapers have saved hours

on-site by using the drive-thru concrete station, streamlining their workflows and reducing costs. Chris Davison, Davison Fencing, says: “Palmer’s concrete station has been a real gamechanger for us. We’ve been using it for a few months now, and it’s spot on for what we need. The best part is we get exactly the amount of concrete we want— no more, no less. That means no wasted materials or money down the drain, which is key for us.”

• Full-Service Support: For businesses relying on multiple services, Palmer’s one-stop model creates seamless project delivery. Ed Bailey, Rewild, says: “There’s not a garden we’ve built this year that hasn’t been supplied by Palmer Nurseries. Adding a pod, shepherds hut, garden room or office to a property is often an attractive idea. Having facilities such as a small kitchen, shower and toilet make these buildings so much more usable and practicable. However, this can prove challenging if gravity drainage is not available.

The solution is to install a small, belowground pumping station that will collect all the waste water and sewage and then pump it uphill to the nearest public sewer.

Pumping experts, Pump Technology Ltd, offer a range of pumping stations and pump combinations to suit all site requirements.

As an example, the MiniMatic tank with its single, high-quality pump is suitable for a 6-meter lift and a max flow of 5 L/sec. It has a soft solid handling capability of 50mm and is ideal for these low volume applications. The Polyethylene tank has a capacity of 160L and is supplied complete with internal pipework and non-return valve.

ADRIAN GRAY, TO RETURN TO RHS CHELSEA THIS YEAR

WITH AN INCONCEIVABLE 3-BOULDER STONEBALANCE

Adrian Gray, the international pioneer of stonebalancing art, known for his mind-bending sculptural feats of impossibility, is back for RHS Chelsea 2025. This year, the Devon-based, sculptor will be pushing the boundaries even further with a huge, first-of-itskind 3-boulder stonebalance. The piece will be the most complex and audacious stonebalance the sculptor has ever exhibited at the flower show. Three colossal boulders will appear to defy the laws of physics and captivate spectators with their mesmerising presence.

Of the planned RHS Chelsea Flower Show piece, Adrian Gray said; “I have often demonstrated small, 3-stone balances at Chelsea, but have never shown a triple stonebalance of this magnitude. This sculpture pushes the boundaries of my work further than ever, building on the methodology I use for smaller sculptures to create a new work on a massive scale. A seesaw formation will feature two huge boulders delicately balanced on a fine pivot point around a central boulder, creating a striking equilibrium.”

The incredible sculpture will be exhibited alongside ‘Crazy For You,’ another monumental balance of 3m tall and 1.6m wide, showcasing a similarly fine and improbable

point of balance. Adrian will also be showing a number of beautiful, smaller sculptures, both for the garden and the home. All works on the stand will be for sale, with smaller pieces ranging from £300 to £5,000 in price. The monumental works are also for sale, price on application.

Facts

- The breathtaking balance will suspend three, 6-tonne Cornish granite boulders at a 4-metre height.

- It will be the first time a 3-boulder stonebalance of staggering proportions, has been shown at the flower show.

FOR GIANT IMPACT

THERE’S OTTERBINE’S GIANT FOUNTAINS

For a fountain that blends seamlessly with the scope and size of any landscape project, there’s Otterbine’s Giant Fountain range.

The multi-tiered, multi-dimensional designs of the Aqua Star, Aries, Equinox, Mystic, Polaris, Super Nova, and Triad fountains fulfil the toughest of briefs, bringing the right balance, dimension, impact and texture to the biggest of spaces.

Robert Jackson, Division Manager, at Reesink Hydro-Scapes says: “Water has the power to transform the spatial qualities of a place and influence how people perceive the landscape. These giant fountains are popular with landscape architects when a dramatic focus is desired. They have display heights of up to 90ft or 27m, cascading patterns of up to 121ft or 37m and a good fan

pattern for impressive width across the water body. There’s the option to add a night time dimension with the Fountain Glo colour changing lights as well.”

Otterbine’s 80-watt RGBW Glo colour lights were designed to light up the enormous spray patterns of the Giant Fountain line. With millions of bright and rich color combinations and 24 pre-programmed sequences, this optional element for the range brings even more value to the fountains, bringing them alive after dark and prolonging enjoyment of the feature.

Otterbine’s Giant fountains range in power from 10 to 25 horsepower and suit shallow – a minimum of one metre of water – operating depths. The floats for each fountain allow

for easy height adjustment via a water intake which minimises the visibility of the float and assist in keeping it level in the water.

Installation isn’t a problem as they are designed for ease of handling. The large wheels on the frames the unit can be moved around the lake eliminating, in most cases, the need for hoists and cranes.

When choosing Otterbine, customers make the decision to choose quality and quantity at a competitive price point.

A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION: ROBOTIC MOWERS

EMISSION-FREE TURF CARE FOR LANDSCAPERS

As sustainability gains importance for sports grounds and large grass areas, landscapers are increasingly looking for efficient and costeffective methods to lower their carbon footprints. Robotic mowers offer a modern solution, integrating advanced technology with zero emissions for environmentally conscious turf care. For example, Kress RTKn robotic mowers exemplify these innovations by providing antenna-free, zeroemissions, reliable performance.

Addressing Seasonal Grass Care Challenges

Maintaining a well-kept turf area can be challenging, particularly when working under time constraints and dealing with varying weather conditions. As the grass begins to grow with brighter days ahead, robotic mowers can be the first machines out in the morning. Their lighter body weight prevents damage to wet grass, making them ideal for early-season mowing. Many robotic mowers are specifically designed to handle these conditions efficiently, performing reliably in wet weather and ensuring consistent cutting during periods of rapid grass growth.

Addressing Staff Shortages

Robotic mowers allow staff to focus

on more important tasks, using their skills where they are needed most rather than spending time on routine mowing. This helps to enhance overall productivity while addressing staffing shortages. With staff recruitment proving increasingly difficult, robotic mowers offer a costeffective solution. The price of three mowers is comparable to the annual minimum wage of one employee, yet they can operate for over 20 hours a day, seven days a week, covering vast areas with ease.

Precision and Performance

Robotic mowers are designed to deliver autonomous precision and consistency in grass maintenance. Operating quietly and without emissions, they provide an alternative to traditional petrolpowered equipment. For example, transitioning to robotic mowers can significantly reduce carbon emissions on large properties, making them an attractive choice for those prioritising sustainability. For instance, the advanced RTKn technology in Kress robotic mowers demonstrates how robotic solutions can achieve high levels of precision and reliability, without the need for unsightly antennas on your premises.

Quiet and Safe Operation

One of the standout features of robotic mowers is their near-silent operation. This allows landscapers to schedule mowing at any time, without causing disruptions to nearby residents and players. Additionally, these machines can reduce certain safety risks, such as staff exposure to hazardous conditions or repetitive strain injuries associated with traditional mowing. Kress RTKn mowers, known for their quiet operation, illustrate the benefits of advanced robotic technology in reducing noise and enhancing safety.

A Consideration for the Future

Investing in robotic mowers offers long-term benefits. Their advanced technology and efficiency provide operational savings over time while aligning with sustainability goals. For landscapers and groundskeepers aiming to reduce environmental impact and improve grass quality, robotic mowers—such as the Kress RTKn models—present a forwardthinking solution for sustainable turf management.

The future

The Kress RTKn robot mowers extend unmanned mowing to larger areas. They efficiently operate in parallel lines and autonomously move from one area to another, as if driven by humans. There is no need for boundary wires or on-site aerials.

The Kress RTKn robot mowers maintain areas of up to 36,000 m² each.

ETESIA HYDRO 80: TRANSFORMING DAFSCAPE WITH POWER AND PRECISION

For Daf Price, owner of Dafscape, investing in the Etesia Hydro 80 ride-on mower has transformed his business.

Serving a variety of clients along the scenic St David’s coast, Daf has seen remarkable improvements in efficiency and versatility thanks to this compact machine.

“I look after mansions, campsites, small gardens, large gardens, and everything in between,” says Daf. “Most of my work is grass cutting and hedge trimming, and I work from January through to midNovember. The majority of the gardens I look after are cut once every two weeks, in all sorts of weather conditions. Some of the gardens can range from formal and tidy to overgrown jungles!”

Before acquiring the Hydro 80, Daf relied on pedestrian mowers, a method that was both time-consuming and labourintensive. The Hydro 80, with its 80cm cutting width and hydrostatic drive, has been a revelation. “Since buying the Hydro 80, it has completely changed my business. I’ve been able to go out and work in all conditions, and still do a cracking job. It has made life a lot easier,” he explains.

Equipped with a 15hp twin-cylinder Kawasaki engine, the Hydro 80 is built for performance. Its powerful motor allows Daf to mow through dense, overgrown grass without clogging, something that was a significant challenge with his previous equipment. “It is great for cutting

long overgrown grass,” Daf adds, emphasising the machine’s reliability and consistency, even in tough conditions.

HOW TRIMAX NEXABLADES SET A NEW BENCHMARK

IN FINE TURF MOWING

Drawing on over four decades of experience, Trimax has developed a blade that redefines rotary mowing performance. Scientifically tested and proven, the Trimax NexaBlade outperforms everything that’s come before it, delivering superior results for golf courses, sports fields, and turf farms.

Why NexaBlades?

Designed exclusively for Trimax rotary mowers, the NexaBlade is an elite blade engineered to provide optimal performance come rain or shine.

With perfectly relative angles and tailored geometry, the NexaBlades have proven to outperform the industry

leading Trimax LazerBladez.

Testing Results

The NexaBlade has undergone extensive testing, excelling in six key areas. Below are the results compared to the Trimax LazerBladez.

TESTED AND PROVEN TO:

• Improve clipping and spread by 70%

Reduce clumping by 51%

• Improve the cleanliness of cut by 14%

• Use 5% less PTO power

• Increase resistance to erosive wear by 50%

• Reduce aerodynamic noise by 15%

What Do Customers Say?

Ashley Craggs, owner of Knotty Hill Golf Center, has been using the Nexablades on his Trimax X-WAM mowers to cut 45 fairways three times a week.

“The NexaBlades have been fantastic. I have been using them for a year and have found the cut quality is far superior compared to the LazerBladez.

The NexaBlade’s curved shape helps glade through the grass, reducing debris build-up, which keeps the blades nice and clean. This produces finer grass clippings which evenly spread out the back of the machine, leaving behind a better playing surface. In dewy and damp

conditions, the NexaBlades don’t clump and leave excess grass debris. This allows us to keep cutting whereas before our machines would be parked up. We have also noticed a fuel saving with the new blades, they’re approximately 25% more economical.

As the NexaBlades were so successful last season, we will be changing all our Trimax mowers to the new blades as we are so pleased with their results and performance”.

After hearing about the NexaBlades on social media, Rhys McDonagh, Head Greenkeeper at Parc Golf Club decided to try

a set on his Trimax Snake. The results exceeded expectations.

The price difference wasn’t significant compared to the Lazerbladez, so we bought a set - and we haven’t looked back since!

We use the NexaBlades more in the summer months when everything is dry and a little bit shorter. Nothing can beat them. The grass dispersion, which was always good with the Lazerbladez is even better with the NexaBlades. There is

no build-up of grass underneath the decks whatsoever. They provide a much better cut and finish and perform really well even in dewy conditions. The blade length also seems longer than the Lazerbladez and more blade equals more cut!

In summary, to anyone considering the NexaBlades I would say they are worth it. From the cut quality to grass dispersion, they just seem so much better!”

To learn more about NexaBlades, or arrange a demonstration visit the Trimax website or call 01933 652235.

GEORGE BROWNS DELIVERS THE FULL PACKAGE FOR MYTIME ACTIVE

A package of Baroness and Kubota equipment, supplied by George Browns Ltd, is playing its part in the ongoing investment and development across 11 courses that make up Mytime Active. More than just supplying first-class machinery, Regional Grounds Manager for the midlands Dave Cole emphasises the importance of the ‘outstanding’ back up support and service they’ve received from all George Browns departments which has helped to keep their ambitious maintenance plans on track.

Mytime Active comprises of 11 sites – offering nine and 18-hole rounds together with footgolf at locations throughout Birmingham, Bromley and Hampshire. Specifically in the midlands under the remit of Dave and his team of 20 are six

courses, three of which are the beneficiaries of the latest batch of machinery upgrades. “In taking our greenkeeping practices to new heights, we’ve completely re-kitted out three courses with the expert help of George Browns” he explains.

“Our experience with them as a dealer has always been second to none; whether that’s William Montgomerie giving us the tailored, expert advice when it comes to machine specification and on-site training, or James Bailey in their Daventry service department who is phenomenal at technical support. As we all know, the grass doesn’t stop growing if your equipment goes down! George Browns understand the pressure of time and the importance of getting fast answers, resolving any issues quickly and

going above and beyond to get us up and running.”

The new fleet of equipment installed in September 2024 consists of a Baroness GM2810, LM331 and two LM311 all-hydraulic triplex mowers along with an RTV-X1110 from Kubota. “We’ve run Baroness mowers for years and find them to be bulletproof.” Dave continues, “The cutting cylinders are industryleading and we’ve definitely witnessed a reduction in disease occurrence on our greens because of the outstanding sharpness and cut quality.”

“The Baroness machines alone give us fantastic versatility on our fleet. They’re capable of working on all ground conditions, and by adjusting the height of cut we can mow multiple areas on our multiple sites to a very high level.”

On his Kubota RTV-X1110, Dave describes it as a fantastic allrounder! “Like the Baroness machines, the RTV is incredibly comfortable and easy to operate, and it’s become our main method of transporting people and materials around the course. It was thoroughly put through its paces over the wet autumn and winter months and it never let us down, no matter how wet it was.”

He summarises, “As we continue to develop our sites around the country, we’re delighted to have the right equipment and support around us thanks to George Browns, helping us to achieve our goals both on and off the course.”

ETESIA HYDRO 100 IS THE PERFECT SOLUTION FOR THE RETREATS GROUP

The Retreats Group, which encompasses three of the leading luxury hotels in Wales—Twr y Felin Hotel, Roch Castle, and Penrhiw Priory—has always been dedicated to maintaining immaculate grounds that reflect the beauty of its locations.

For Ollie Davies, the groundskeeper and supervisor for The Retreats Group, maintaining these stunning landscapes has become significantly easier since the purchase of a Etesia Hydro 100 ride-on mower.

“The properties are undulating and steep in places,” says Ollie. “My brother used to help me look after the grounds, and when he left, we decided that instead of employing someone else full-time, we would invest in one of these machines and see how it would benefit me.”

Before the Hydro 100, Ollie managed the extensive lawns using pedestrian mowers—a task that was both timeconsuming and physically demanding.

“Prior to the Etesia machine, I would cut them all with a pedestrian mower. It was a lot of hard work. This Etesia saves so much

time and money. It is a great bit of kit.”

The Etesia Hydro 100 III ride-on mower is designed for professional users who require top-quality mowing and collection performance in all weather conditions.

Powered by an 18 HP twin-cylinder Kawasaki engine, it features a modern hydraulic drive

transmission with differential lock, a large 500-litre grass box, and a cutting deck with rear central ejection for efficient grass collection.

YORK RACECOURSE LOOKS TO THE FUTURE WITH TECHNOLOGY FROM GROUNDTECH

The award-winning grounds team at York Racecourse have gained two new recruits, in the form of an Echo TM-1050 and Echo TM-2050 robotic mower from GroundTech. In the few shorts weeks since their delivery, the pair have been well received by Head Groundsman Adrian Kay as well as visitors to site who have commented that the enclosures and other perimeter areas have never presented better at this time of year.

With a busy race season from May to October, and a calendar compromising of weddings and corporate functions, the maintenance is a year-round operation for Adrian and his team of seven. Like many in the sector, York Racecourse have found recruitment to be a challenge, particularly since the pandemic. They’ve decided

to turn to technology to provide a helping hand. “We recognise that people don’t want to be working 60-70 hours per week, or at unsociable hours, much of which was attributable to the time it takes to mow our expanses of lawn. By investing in this pair of robotic mowers, I can redeploy my skilled team to other maintenance tasks, ensuring we can maintain presentation levels” Adrian explains.

Following advice from Echo’s Sam Daybell, they opted for the Echo TM-1050 and TM-2050. “We worked really well together, assessing the size and specification of the prospective areas to find the right fit. The TM-1050 is primarily used on our premium grass car parking areas, and the TM-2050 on the enclosures,

parade rings and a number of medium and high spec lawns.”

“We’re already benefiting from all the well-documented advantages that robotics brings – mowing through the night and at weekends, in all manner of weather conditions.” Adrian continues, “It’s also meant that we’ve been able to retain presentation over a difficult, wet winter with the light footprint of the robots. This has not gone unnoticed by visitors to the course.”

“Considering the wider benefits, it means less need to turn to our petrol or diesel mowers which is a big plus from an environmental sustainability standpoint. In 2023 we launched ‘Green Knavesmire 300’ demonstrating our commitment to reaching Net Zero by 2040, with these new editions from GroundTech playing their part in this wider goal.”

Together with the expert support from the team at GroundTech and Echo, Adrian is enjoying exploring the full functionality of the software, allowing him to monitor the robots 24/7. “I’m not sure I should admit this in print, but I find I’m on the app at four in the morning, making sure everything is going according to plan!” he laughs. “But it is very useful, being able to see things like the battery life etc. Every day we’re taking the opportunity to learn more about them and really bed them into our routine before the season kicks off in May.”

Pedestrian
Stand-on Electric
Ride-on

THE AVANT 225 IS THE PERFECT WORKHORSE

For Jeff Clark, maintaining his acreand-a-half property in rural North Wales has become significantly easier thanks to the Avant 225 compact loader.

Jeff, who has some woodland, and a main field to maintain, has found the perfect solution in this versatile machine.

Jeff has extensive experience with various types of equipment, often testing new machinery for manufacturers. Initially, he sought a ride-on mower but soon realised he needed something more versatile. “I went to Clwyd Agricultural looking for a flail mower to attach to my ride-on, but I saw the Avant and thought it looked interesting,” Jeff says. After some consideration and a test drive, Jeff traded his ride-on mower for the Avant 225, along with various attachments for it.

“I needed a machine that could mow, tow a trailer, and help me move things around the garden,” Jeff explains. “I’m 76, not getting

any younger, and not as strong as I used to be. The Avant seemed to be the perfect machine to help me. It’s invaluable and well worth the money we invested. The bucket on the front is large and versatile; you can even mix cement in it, which I’ve found very useful.”

One of the standout features for Jeff is the quick-release coupling for changing attachments. “The changeover of attachments is very quick. A quick flick of a lever and there’s no effort involved,” he says.

The Avant 225’s versatility shines through in various tasks. “I’ve planted apple trees with the mini digger attachment. Rather than spending hours digging a hole, it’s done in five minutes,” Jeff explains. “The 1500 out-front mower attachment does an extremely good job, and the adjustable height of cut is perfect for the different areas we have here.”

Jeff also utilised the Avant 225 for a significant project on his driveway.

“The front drive was covered in pebbles, and I didn’t want to lose them when I had it tarmacked.

The Avant picked up 8 tonnes of pebbles, which I’ve since used around raised beds and paths. The machine has probably paid for itself already.”

For Jeff, the best feature of the Avant 225 is its versatility. “It does everything I want – it carries weights, pulls the trailer, and carries most things in the bucket up and down the garden. I even use it to pull trees from the woodland area with a rope. It’s a muscle saver and works really well. I don’t think I could do without it.”

“The joystick is easy to use, and the seat warmer is fantastic in the winter,” he adds.

The Avant 225’s impressive capabilities include a 1.4m lift height, 350kg lift capacity, 10 km/h speed, and 42 L/min auxiliary hydraulics. Easy to transport with a car trailer, it’s a powerful and versatile compact loader despite its small size. The articulated design and hydraulic 4x4 transmission are similar to larger Avant models, ensuring efficient operation with excellent visibility and easy-to-use controls.

As well as being impressed with the machine Jeff praised Clwyd Agricultural, the local dealer, for their excellent service and support. “They are lovely people, easy to deal with, and very helpful,” he notes.

Overall, the Avant 225 compact loader has proven to be the ideal workhorse for Jeff Clark, providing the versatility and efficiency needed to maintain his land with ease.
