Bellaria
Bellaria is an innovative air purifying device which re-establishes a healthy balance in indoor atmosphere, thanks to its active ionization system, getting rid of odours and other harmful substances. The inner working of Bellaria take their roots on patented E.Ion technology by Falmec, which releases ions indoors in a pristine atmosphere–like concentration. Indoor pollution at home, but in public spaces and workplaces as well, can be a menace for our health. Chemical cleaners and harmful substances generated by heating systems, AC or electric appliances can drastically reduce the quality of the air we breathe.
Lighting Specifier
Air ‘checking’, during the purifying process by Bellaria, is done in the maximum quietness and gradually shown through the colour-changing leaves (from yellow to green) of its light indicator, which measures the environment quality improvement. Tests made by University of Padua have found a reduction by 85% of bacterial charge in the atmosphere when Bellaria is active. Bellaria matches also the two functions of air purifying device and dimmable LED light, thus becoming a real interior design object for living rooms or offices. The looks of Bellaria are made even more charming by the minimal but distinguished design and by the Murano glass structure, exclusively handmade, as per the century-long Venetian glass masters tradition. Bellaria won the Silver Prize, in the ‘Wellness and Relaxation Products’ category, at the European Product Design Award contest, which every year honours the best products in term of features, innovation and environment-friendliness. The awards were announced last March by an eminent committee of journalists coming from the most renowned design publications, gathered at the European Parliament in Brussels. www.bellaria.falmec.com www.falmec.com/ Photo credit: Contratti Company

New outdoor collection by Catellani & Smith
Lighting Specifier
Enzo Catellani has designed his first collection of outdoor lights for Catellani & Smith in response to the trend that, over the years, has seen living spaces move outside into terraces and gardens, creating extensions of the house. Enzo Catellani’s main goal was to create a collection of indoor lamps suitable for outdoor installation; lighting fixtures created for the outside, but able to recreate the same warmth and atmosphere as indoor lights. Glass plays a starring role in this collection; glass which, before being completely cooled, is shaped by hand. As occurs with the processing of all Catellani & Smith lamps, aesthetics and craftsmanship are combined with the latest technology for outdoor lighting. The most striking piece in the collection is Medousê, a light made of two overlapping glass hemispheres, which is green when switched off, to complement the surrounding landscape perfectly, and an ethereal white when switched on. Also made of glass, the composition of irregular shapes of More, which is supported by stems in green-gold colour, seems to magically emerge from the ground like a luminous hedge. More moves and sways with each gust of wind and becomes the fruits of a tree in the unique piece ‘Albero della Luce’, created by Enzo Catellani in 2005, whose copper trunk, in several colour shades, takes us back to a magical nature of the past.

Syphasera is a potentially endless family of customizable light sources, which are available in different versions for the ground, for pots or for water, and which when off are able to blend into the surrounding natural environment. These luminous ‘plants’ are ideal for architects and designers as they can create new shapes,
flourish, multiply and change their surroundings. If ‘design’ means ‘to invent’ new shapes, then Syphasera is a piece of non-design that doesn’t dare change something that is already naturally perfect. Syphasera is nature, but gives light. The family includes several elements, developed by Guido Parenzan and Maurizio Quargnale together with the expertise of the agronomist Maurizio Vegini. www.cavalleri.com - info@cavalleri.com

Choosing ECO-friendly Lighting for your Business or Home: An Introduction Making sustainable choices for your business or home isn’t always easy. Each year brings new technologies, new standards and requirements. Too many choices, needs and wants can easily confuse anyone. You care about the environment. Because you are part of it. But which sustainable decisions should you be making for your business or at home? Are you doing everything it takes? We share a social responsibility to make a change. To reduce waste. To embrace environmentally friendly solutions and materials, over traditional, outdated ones. To help each other make truly sustainable choices.
Lighting Specifier
That’s where ECO Lights comes in. We are a UK based LED Lighting brand, helping businesses stick to their sustainable goals by providing energy efficient LED bulbs. We are shining a light on the latest lighting technologies, to break the cycle of companies’ unsustainable lighting business models. Because we believe that we should put our money where our mouth is in creating environmentally friendly products with actual, significant results. We are not only advocates of ‘living green’, we aim to educate, engage and move leading companies towards more sustainable goals in their lighting.
“We aim to make the world greener, one LED bulb at a time.” Lighting is an overlooked sector when it comes to some environments. Picking the right lights for your business or any other space (such as hotels, schools, retail and even residential spaces) can be confusing, as there are lots of options to choose from. Should you go for cheap Halogen bulbs or CFL bulbs? Which LED lights suit your needs best? How can you best illuminate your environment as well as save money and energy?
12
Taking a shortcut and avoiding the consulting of experts can definitely save you time and money in the short run. However, if you want to make effective, sustainable decisions in the long run, look for reliable solutions. Spending some extra time to understand LED lighting technologies and picking suitable LED bulbs can make an astonishing difference to making effective, sustainable decisions. If time is precious then you have no time to waste, we provide in-depth support to people like you. Simplifying the process of purchasing LED lighting and providing you practical LED lighting guides, tailored to your needs. So you can correctly illuminate your space whilst saving money and energy.
Traditional Lighting VS. New LED Technologies A lot has changed in the past few years, when it comes to lighting technologies. Incandescent were once a popular bulb for residential and commercial spaces. Traditional incandescent lighting, whilst cost effective, is not a sustainable option and has been replaced with other lighting technologies. Halogen bulbs were a follow-up to incandescent bulbs. These bulbs, shine bright and can still be found today. They were a popular option for businesses, but these halogen bulbs are only cost-effective in the short run. We’re here to make sustainable choices and reduce waste. Look at short-term solutions means we will not be able to help the earth, nor its people. For any home or business, making sustainable LED lighting decisions is not just a moral issue, but a dire need to set straight the structure of the company, whilst also an important ethical issue. “..Making sustainable LED lighting decisions is not just a moral issue, but a dire need. To set straight the ethical structure of a company whilst also an important ethical issue.”
Luckily, technology is on our side. The latest LED light technologies, which we have embraced in the production of our LED bulbs, make it easier for people to contribute to a healthier environment. For instance, the Compact Fluorescent Lighting (CFL) technology was invented to replace most inefficient Halogen bulbs. You can recognise CFL bulbs by its distinctive swirl shape, that looks nothing like the Edison bulb we all know well. CFL bulbs however, despite saving energy, usually contain traces of mercury and cannot be disposed easily, especially if broken. CFL bulbs cannot be dimmed either, so when compared to LED lights, they are less versatile and less environmentally friendly. Which is why LED light technologies excites us so much. A regular Halogen incandescent bulb burns-out after 3000 hours. A LED bulb on the other hand, lasts 10x longer, shining bright for a staggering 25.000-30.000 hours. It reduces maintenance costs, saves energy and money in the long run, thanks to its incredibly technology and performance. LED lights, are truly the only sustainable light bulbs any home or business should go for. It’s the smartest choice for all premises! If you are in need of replacing your current lighting system, or if you are ready to make the right decision to illuminate your space, do get in touch with our ECO Lights team. We can help you assess how much money and carbon you will be saving when you make the switch to LED lights. Our bulbs can easily be retrofitted in your existing fittings, so you will not have to spend extra time and money on maintenance. If you’re ready to make the switch, visit our website for more information and to see the ECO Lights LED bulbs you can choose from. Our stock caters for all needs, and we deliver any bulb swiftly. The site was dug to allow the underpass, then bermed up slightly to accommodate the 24-metre steel bridge structure. The reinforced concrete abutments extend into zigzagging retaining walls, creating a dynamic mineral landscape. The 44-metre guardrails on either side of the viaduct were made in four sections: they are steel-framed assemblages backed by perforated steel plaques, coated with metalized paint. The diagonal steel plates recall the triangulated motif of more traditional truss bridges. A similar motif was developed for the protective railings along the sidewalks below. The viaduct’s unique signature transforms it into a subtle landmark on the campus. Lighting Specifier 20
A New Viaduct For The MIL Campus Of The Université De Montréal
Facing the campus, the viaduct acts as a backdrop that comes to life at night when four light ‘tableaux’, inspired by Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawings, appear and disappear in the dark. These, generated by 135 LED light bars inserted on the diagonal grid of the west guardrail, are programmed to produce ephemeral patterns in constant movement.
Lighting Specifier
In forthcoming years, the University of Montréal, one of the city’s major institutions, will be opening a second campus located on a former railway yard. Existing tracks had to be relocated in order to accommodate the new facilities and a new viaduct was built over the campus’ future access road.
The chosen theme for this virtual animation is that of the four seasons: drops of rain, followed by snowflakes, allude to the fall and winter seasons; creepers announce the spring and fireflies celebrate the summer. The east guardrail is treated in a more static but no less dramatic way. At night, the upper structure appears to float above its sculptural base, every detail emphasized by lighting. The geometric pattern used for the architectural guardrails is reproduced on the railings protecting the parallel sidewalks, below the viaduct. Responsible for the architectural and lighting treatment of this bridge, the designers believed that a subtle and poetic use of light would resonate within the heavily transformed environment. They hoped to draw attention to the railway yard’s history, soon to be totally eradicated with the advent of new university pavilions and urban streetscape. www.civiliti.com 21

which have regulatory or architectural constraints.
The technology is so simple and intuitive that it “installs itself”, without any wiring, and is active as soon as it is installed: the signal is transmitted via radio, travelling on the electrical installation via the actuator, without the need for any wired connections. An ideal solution for renovations, redevelopments and furnishing updates, or any installations
The device is in fact powered by exploiting the energy generated by pressing the buttons, so requires no batteries, which would otherwise have to be replaced and disposed of.
The new radio-frequency command is also ZigBee certified and is therefore compatible with systems using the ZigBee Green Power standard, a new lighting control protocol that is spreading rapidly, with the adoption of increasingly green solutions.
The device is compatible with other products marked with the indication “Works with EasyAir” because it can be used with EasyAir radio
sensors (incorporated in many professional appliances available on the market), for example for applications in which a lamp or group of lamps have to react in the event of movement or change of brightness. Finally, with the possibility to coordinate the device with the elegant and sophisticated designs of Eikon, the modern design of Arké or the essential and rigorous designs of Plana, the new radio-frequency command blends perfectly with any kind of home decor style. The other features of this device are, finally, minimum stand-out, thus designed to blend style with full installation flexibility. www.vimar.com

Lightmaker Studio Makes U.S. Debut at ICFF NY 2017 Lighting Specifier
Toronto-based Lightmaker Studio makes their U.S. debut at ICFF New York May 21-24, 2017 at the Javits Center. The Studio will introduce their sculpture-like modern lighting pieces and launch their new Boom Chandelier. Established in 2014, Lightmaker Studio designs and produces original chandeliers and architectural lighting. All pieces are assembled by hand and finished in Toronto. The Studio, led by Denise Murphy, uses rhythm and geometry to create distinctive pieces. The Studio's work has been described as being more like lit sculptures than conventional light fixtures. Refined materials such as handfinished brass and blown glass predominate but polished copper and nickel are also used. Vintage lighting forms help to create a sense of timelessness throughout the collection. Lightmaker Studio collaborates with designers and architects in the U.S. and Canada on residential and commercial projects.

Float - Wall
Boom upends the traditional chandelier with an exuberant and unrestrained form. Pure shapes appear to extend at random but the underlying geometry maintains order.
A new addition to the Float series, Float Wall balances a seemingly random pattern of globes on a rigid brass frame. More art-piece than light fixture, Float Wall extends the traditional wall sconce into new territory.
The Boom Series includes both circular and ovalshaped chandeliers.
Curve Sconces The Curve Series balances rusticity with refinement. Solid brass or steel bowls hold smoked glass orbs. Used on the wall or flushmount on the ceiling, the simplicity of the Curve Sconce allows it to harmonize with almost any element.

Three hanging light sculptures majestically welcome visitors in the entrance hall. The artwork makes a link between the mineralogical heritage of nearby Mont Saint-Hilaire and the education and enrichment the public receives from the community centre’s sports and cultural activities:
The diamond shape and its variations inspired the work’s structure and recall a pattern frequently used in quilt making, an activity of the ''Cercle des fermières'' (women’s quilting group). The shapes also evoke the world of science and resemble certain mineral configurations.
During the work’s production, the artist invited the Cercle des Fermières de Beloeil to participate in assembling the zip-ties. For the Beloeil community, this created a relationship with the artist and a feeling of being part of making the art piece. Bright Solutions For Maximum Energy Savings With Fortisday Lighting Specifier
LED specialist, FortisDay has created a new range of recessed luminaires that presents 30% less energy usage than any competitor design currently available on the market and can help achieve the Government’s mandated minimum energy performance standards by April 2018. The stylish SmartiLumin range utilises latest proven lighting technology to produce a colour render index (CRI) of 93 together with light output and efficiencies of greater than 181 lumens per circuit watt. Adopting SmartiLumin technology ensures light fittings can be individually controlled to turn on and off or dim the output as required. And with light level sensors and presence detection, controls can be optimised to take advantage of natural daylight savings and maximise off periods, enhancing user environment. Says Robin Day, Chief Technical Officer at FortisDay: “Lighting in commercial buildings accounts for around 30%
28
of total energy usage. And whilst most understand LED lighting is greener, what is less well known is the effect on dramatically reducing payback times when taking into account that any maintenance costs will be virtually eliminated. “Energy consumption can be reduced further by using efficient light technologies such as SmartiLumin, which offers savings of up to 80% compared to traditional lamp technology. The range can be easily installed or retrofitted with intelligent lighting controls and schemes such as presence control, daylight harvesting and constant light controls as part of an overall building energy management system.” The introduction of SmartiLumin will also play a significant role in helping commercial office landlords to comply with the Government’s Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards coming into mandatory effect for nondomestic properties in April 2018.
Robin adds: “In the commercial sector, over 75% will fail to achieve the prescribed Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS) required by Government of 2018 unless they act now. “Changing to either full or partially automated LED lighting solutions provides the simplest and quickest return on investment. Changes are quick and easy to implement, and when installed with lighting controls offers reduced maintenance and flexibility to be reconfigured into different groups for new office layouts or other required changes; all resulting in maximum energy management.” The SmartiLumin recessed luminaire is available in various sizes including 600×600, 600×1200 and 300×1200. Studio Lieven Adjustable moving lamp
inMOOV The inspiration for the inMOOV lamp comes from the movements in nature such as flowers opening or jellyfish swimming. Studio Lieven wanted to transfer this fascinating movement into a living space. For the body of the lamp, inspired by the Invertible Cube of Paul Schatz, they invented the Invertible Disc that can fold itself in and out. Unique Properties inMOOV is a ceiling lighting device. Its unique features are that its body is movable around lamp’s horizontal axis folding itself inside and out. This movement is based on the invention of the Invertible Disc. The body of the lamp is fitted with LED strips of maximum luminous flux of 1200 lm. Users adjust position of the lamp’s body by hand. By doing so they can choose light colour changes form 3500 when it is open to 2500 Kelvin when it is closed. Operation / Interaction The unique feature of this lamp is its ability to folds itself inside out. Through this movement of the lampshade it is possible to regulate the intensity and the direction of the light. The fully opened lamp creates a soft light directed to the ceiling. The folded lamp creates more focused and warm light that illuminates the space underneath it. The movement can be done by hand.

Lucem Lichtbeton World premiere: LUCEM light transmitting concrete realized first time in salt water application
Lighting Specifier
Thermal Baths in Bad Staffelstein With a New Highlight Made of Light Transmitting Concrete
The public swimming pool “Obermaintherme” in the Bavarian city Bad Staffelstein is Bavaria’s hottest and strongest saltwater emerging from 1600 m deep drilled spring. More than 1.600 m² water surface and more than 15.000 m² sauna are inviting to relaxing and recovering.
34
Within a large renovation process of some areas in the main bath hall, the inside pool has been renewed, too. A new highlight has been designed with a cave in the shape of a salt crystal made with LUCEM translucent concrete, allowing the new shell to light in different colours along with the water. This ambient lighting concept, along with a special sound system in the Cave integrated with the massage jet nozzles in the water, creates a wellness feeling for everybody inside this installation. The light shines through the surface of the translucent concrete with more than 2 million fiber optics.
With the new light transmitting concrete salt crystals LUCEM presents a unique world’s first design object. The impressive result shows how fascinating public pools can be designed today.
Lighting Specifier
The former design of the interior pool included a cave made of natural stone and covered with artificial palms. This design was very popular over decades, therefore, the new design had to be a very special and an impressive one.
As part of the modernization of the baths, the cave should visually pick up and become a stylized salt crystal, self-illuminating and bright inside-out. The architectural firm Krieger Architekten Ingenieure GmbH from the city of Velbert/ Germany, saw in the light transmitting concrete a perfect material for this use. Translucent concrete is a very elegant and visually appealing material, with the ability to transmit the light behind through thousands of fiber optics embedded within the panels. As a result, the panels look in one moment like a heavy grounded natural stone and when lit, they shine and glow and look like a hovering light material. The duality of this material gives different ambiance for the space, use and users. The project manager of Krieger Architekten Ingenieure, Arch. Sonja Baumeister, and her team completely renewed a 170 m² large pool with underwater-jets, a waterfall and a channel as a 35

As part of this fundamental renovation, the architects designed for one area of this new pool a cave made of LUCEM light concrete, spanning in the form of a stylized salt crystal about 7 x 5 meters. For the cladding of this monument approx. 200 m² light transmitting concrete were used. Within the double wall construction on a steel frame there is a programmable LED lighting technology, that can be adjusted to different coloured mood lighting Krieger Architects Engineers with over 50 years of experience in pool construction have realized this project as an absolute novelty - a world first time salt water application for light transmitting concrete. The salt concentration in this pool is one of the highest levels in brine water from local wells. The pool has a salt content of 3.5%, which is comparable to seawater. Accordingly, the steel frame inside the LUCEM installation had to be designed as a structure resistant to seawater.

regulations, referring to the bathroom zones and IP (ingress protection) ratings of light fittings. Spotlights are great in bathrooms. Make clever use of existing mirrors to maximise light if necessary or add an illuminated LED mirror. For a larger or L-shaped bathroom why not try combining a decorative centre light with functional downlights where more light is required. Bringing brands to life……. The use of lighting in retail application has dramatically increased in strategic importance. Brands recognise how good lighting design can define their identity and ultimately influence how consumers purchase products. For designers achieving retail lighting goals can be complex, highlighting architectural elements, lighting featured product displays to receive the most attention from shoppers.
acdc mix of architectural design and engineering knowledge have led them to produce an impressive portfolio of projects which include some of the most prestigious global brands. Juicy Couture In the case of Juicy Couture. The designers wanted a lighting concept that highlighted the couture elements while retaining its flamboyant style. They selected a Grade II listed building as their flagship London store. Visitors were greeted with a highly decorative environment where lighting played a key role in creating a luxurious and lavish environment. Products from acdc’s accent range were used to create an integrated lighting scheme where the boundaries between architecture and lighting were blurred, creating an intense lit effect perfectly highlighting the display merchandise. Victoria Secret This sexy and glamorous lingerie brand chose a grand outlet for their flagship store in London’s Bond Street. Designers were tasked with providing an alluring lighting scheme in keeping with the seductive image of the brand. The luminaires needed to make the building stand out, whilst maintaining the discretion of the clientele inside. acdc’s Blade luminaires were chosen for outstanding beam control and 44
even wash of light combining blinds on a timer with acdc’s Blade fixtures in all the window reveals. The symmetry of the building lends itself perfectly to the approach, and creates an air of intrigue to passers-by. Blade was also fitted in the landscapes surrounding the store to outline the hedges. Louis Vuitton This project was on the historic Palmolive building, an Art Deco masterpiece of downtown Chicago. The project involved the painstaking restoration of beautiful original elements and new modern glass window bays to maximise retail presence for the client. The designers worked closely with acdc on the storefront lighting. They opted for acdc’s linear uplight products to reveal the beauty and rhythm in the architecture at street level. Light was set to skim up the light coloured cast iron panels at the base of the historic columns and the contrast of the lit panels against the black cast iron behind helps to reinforce the architectural rhythm at a human scale, while the vertical emphasis plays an important role in tying the overall building composition together. www.acdclighting.co.uk

WOKA LAMPS VIENNA is a Vienna-based
Manufacturer of Iconic 20th Century Lighting Design. Lovers of iconic lamps from the early 20th century were for decades deprived of the possibility of owning some of the most striking pieces by the Wiener Werkstätte and the Bauhaus, which had long fallen out of production. The designers whose work WOKA is licensed to produce read like a who’s who of the Vienna design pantheon. In addition to Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, the manufacturer has reissued striking table, ceiling, wall and floor lamps, as well as chandelier pieces, by the likes of Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner and Carl Witzmann. A collection of very rare antiques of the early 20th century as well as a large collection of chandeliers from the 18th century until the 1960s is completing the business of the
WOKA GALLERY.
