WOKA LAMPS VIENNA is a Vienna-based

Manufacturer of Iconic 20th Century Lighting Design. Lovers of iconic lamps from the early 20th century were for decades deprived of the possibility of owning some of the most striking pieces by the Wiener Werkstätte and the Bauhaus, which had long fallen out of production. The designers whose work WOKA is licensed to produce read like a who’s who of the Vienna design pantheon. In addition to Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, the manufacturer has reissued striking table, ceiling, wall and floor lamps, as well as chandelier pieces, by the likes of Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner and Carl Witzmann. A collection of very rare antiques of the early 20th century as well as a large collection of chandeliers from the 18th century until the 1960s is completing the business of the

Acrylicize, the award-winning art collective and consultancy, has unveiled a stunning light installation in the lobby windows of Lacon House. The client Blackstone, who are one of the World’s leading investment firms, added Lacon House to its property portfolio in 2014. Lacon House offers contemporary office space in one of the most well connected areas of London.

The client commissioned Acrylicize to create an art installation that would reflect the contemporary and 24 hour nature of the building, as well as rebranding the building and creating an entrance which is striking yet welcoming. The result was Equilibrium; an intricate and highly detailed bespoke lighting installation representing the sun and moon.

Lighting Specifier

Lighting Specifier Acrylicize decided upon a lighting sculpture to best illustrate the 24 hour nature of the building, whilst adding sparkle and interest to the space during the day and illuminating the front of Lacon House at night. Equilibrium is two lighting sculptures which are part of the same concept, looking at the duality of the Sun and Moon and their relationship. The whimsical nature of the piece lends itself to the concept describing how these celestial orbs have travelled down through the Atrium and become trapped within the front bay windows at Lacon House. The negative form that creates the Sun and its reflective positive shape creating the moon describe a symmetry in the installation, the density of the moon orb creating a harmonious equilibrium once it fills the empty void of the main Sun piece.

10

Equilibrium is an intricate and highly detailed bespoke lighting installation, designed to draw in the warmth of the sunlight outside and be reflective of the sun and moons intrinsic relationship. The light work acts as an ethereal time piece, five minute cycles of communication with dramatic simulations building towards the hour, finishing with hourly crescendos of moving lights. Onlookers are rewarded with a restored sense of energy and wellbeing as they witness the subtle ebb and flow of thousands of delicate illuminated orbs. This elegant fluidity brings movement and life into the space and as day turns to night, the piece takes on an ethereal presence as the lights are gently dimmed to reflect the calming of the hectic city day.

Lighting Specifier The delicacy of the hanging installation creates an intimate experience, with brass and glass balls floating within the space to create an elegant prism reflecting its surroundings and any human interaction with the art work. On further investigation the form of the sun will appear and disappear when viewed at different angles, showcasing the micro and macro success of the piece and rewarding repeat viewings. On moving around the piece the viewer will become consumed by the forest of lights and for those few moments of each day creating a sense of serenity.

Casa Batllò, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, is one of Antoni Gaudì’s architectural jewels, located in the heart of the Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona.

The interiors of this real wonder of Spanish Modernism - built between 1904 and 1906 - have been illuminated by the prestigious creations of Catellani & Smith, that has decorated the noble floor, former residence of the Batlló family, with a Macchina della Luce, a sculpture-like suspension lamp that integrates perfectly with the golden colour that dominates the space. The wall lamps of PostKrisi collection, on the contrary, seem to capture light and shape its shadows, with a charming interplay between transparencies and contrasts. Another model of lamp that belongs to the ‘Oggetti senza tempo’ collection, the ‘Bella’ wall lamps complete the selection made for Casa Batllo. This lamp was created between the 80s and the 90s by Enzo Catellani and it is covered with gold coloured leaf, to represent the most classic Catellani & Smith style.

oyal Caribbean operates the largest global fleet of cruise ships, six of which have Helvar lighting control systems. Harmony of the Seas is the largest of these, carrying just under 5,500 guests and weighing 226,963 gross registered tonnes. The ship boasts innovative features including the Ultimate Abyss, a thrilling slide – 10 stories high – that is the tallest at sea; robot bartenders, virtual balconies with real-time views of the destination for interior rooms, and VOOM – the fastest internet at sea. The existing Helvar lighting control installations have performed so well that it was an easy decision for system integrator Wärtsilä FUNA and Royal Caribbean to specify the Helvar system for Harmony of the Seas, its latest and largest ship. “Using Helvar lighting control was a simple decision for us,” says Andreas Köhler of Wärtsilä FUNA. “Harmony of the Seas is like a floating city, so we needed a lighting control solution that is simple to install and gives us all the capabilities we need on a project of this size and complexity. We have worked with Helvar on a number of Royal Caribbean projects and always found them a fantastic partner. The customer support is also second to none, which can be very important on challenging projects.” Using Helvar technology across its fleet of ships meant that Royal Caribbean was able to feel confident that the lighting control

For Wärtsilä FUNA, the key was also familiarity; the team knew from past experience they could rely on Helvar’s superior lighting control to provide dependable performance and deliver exactly what was needed in a challenging installation. Wärtsilä FUNA also knew that it could rely on Helvar’s fantastic customer service for help with any issues that arose during the project.

The sheer size of Harmony of the Seas presented a significant challenge to Wärtsilä FUNA. International lighting design practice launches bespoke luminaire division

ighting design consultancy Nulty has launched a bespoke luminaire design and manufacturing company – aptly named Nulty Bespoke – in response to a growing need for customised lighting pieces.

Lighting Specifier 20

As lighting scheme designers for establishments such as the Royal Albert Hall, Harrods and News Corp HQ, Nulty often requires handcrafted alternatives to off-the-shelf fittings, in order to achieve a delicacy of detail and seamlessness between light and space. With Nulty Bespoke, the practice now has an official in-house division dedicated to such luminaires. In addition to catering to Nulty's own needs for impeccable quality and beauty, Nulty Bespoke is an effective solution for architects, interior designers and other lighting design practices who are increasingly demanding their own tailor-made fixtures. By employing world-class designers, sourcing the highestquality materials and working with specialist manufacturers from around the world, the Nulty Bespoke team is able to produce truly magnificent pieces.

Managing Director Trevor Morgan has 30 years’ experience in the lighting industry, where he’s worked at all stages of lighting and product design – from initial design conception and manufacture to installation and commissioning. “By scratching our own itch, we’re also able to provide our colleagues in the industry with the handcrafted and unique lighting fixtures they desire,” he says. The launch of Nulty Bespoke follows a busy and successful year for Nulty, and coincides with the practice’s fifth birthday. Since opening in 2011, the team has grown to become one of the UK’s largest lighting design practices, delivering high-end projects across the retail, hospitality, commercial and residential sectors within the UK and internationally. In 2015, they rebranded in recognition of the strength and expertise of the team – many of whom have worked on some of the largest lighting projects in the UK, as well as in Thailand, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Russia.

Bringing wellbeing and vitality to life through light Nulty has completed the interior lighting design for the first Hemsley + Hemsley wellness café with an invigorating and fresh scheme that supports the duo’s passion for quality, healthy eating and living. Located in the new Selfridges Body Studio and within 37,000sq ft of retail space, the café’s lighting concept complements the wider interior design but offers a sense of sanctuary. Taking influence from the surrounding Body Studio character, the café captures the feeling of a ‘summer holiday’ as it looks out over the beachwear department; the light and airy interior, natural materials and foliage giving a nod to Californian and Japanese influences of clean lines, summer, and simplicity. The Nulty team worked closely with the interior architects Neri & Hu, to create a space that would enable visitors to experience the brand’s ethos and leave them feeling energised and healthy. Nulty balanced the effects of vibrancy and serenity by layering three layers of illumination that teased out the natural tones of the interior design and deflected the light from the wider Body Studio retail area. It is this layered composition that creates mood and directly engages the emotions of the visitor. The team placed pendants over the individual tables creating a sense of intimacy; an overall ambience set at a tone different to the rest of the Body Studio generates a sense of warmth and calm, and soft lighting at the perimeter blends the overall effect.

Lighting Specifier

The team overcame the challenge of creating a feeling of summer without the use of natural light by adding cove lighting, a concealed LED light strip to highlight the back wall of the cafe. The light not only creates a natural illumination effect but draws the eye through and encourages the senses to take in the space as a whole As well as directing mood and atmosphere, the lighting scheme also played an important role in showcasing the food. Nulty used high colour rendering across the café space to highlight the high quality ingredients and help bring the menu to life and enhance the culinary experience for the diners. Anna Sandgren, Senior Designer said: “Hemsley + Hemsley have created a strong brand ethos

24

that inspires people and influences behaviour and it was vital that the lighting, as an influencer of mood, supported this. Balancing light was key to help people feel a sense of calm, away from the retail space, but also energised by their surroundings. The lighting design is intimate

and complements the architectural language by Neri & Hu. This relationship between light and food is of the utmost importance when designing for restaurant space.”

“A strong brand ethos that inspires people and influences behaviour”

This minimalism, designed to leave light pure and untouched, makes the Lederam collection unique and valuable, but at the same time familiar, deep, but immediate. ith a diameter of 3metres and a drop of over 4metres, the chandelier features over 6,000 individual high quality crystal octagon drops, each one attached to a chrome wire frame to prevent movement and vibration when the ship is under way. The drops are suspended from a finely engineered custom brass frame.

Chelsom created a striking chandelier to hang in the decadent stairwell which featured hand cut triedri clear glass drops hanging from a polished brass frame.

Further high quality glass, but in a more contemporary style, is used in the Meridian Lounge where a 5.5metre diameter horseshoe chandelier illuminates the dancefloor and surrounding tables. Three tiers of individually mouth blown teardrop glasses are illuminated from above with LED light sources.

Having a good time extends beyond the confines of the ship and shore excursions to the various destinations is a big part of the cruising programme. The Destination Centre therefore is a popular area which guests can visit and relax in whilst arranging exciting times ashore.

By contrast, in the Canyon Ranch Spa Club, Chelsom created a spectacular modern lighting feature using polished stainless steel and hand sculpted glass cylinder shades. At 2.5metres diameter, the fitting draws the eye as soon as you enter the spa reception and further chandeliers were created throughout the rest of the spa. Entertaining guests is a high priority on board and the luxurious Constellation Theatre provides the ideal setting for evening performances, many in the true Hollywood style.

Illuminated from within by a myriad of clear lamps, the chandelier adds just the right kind of sparkle to this theatrical setting.

The words cruise and luxury have been inextricably linked since the days when the mighty liners were the preferred mode of transport for traversing the globe. Regent Seven Seas have taken those levels of luxury to new higher standards with their recently launched ship Explorer. Christened by Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco in 2016, the ship brings elegance and glamour to the world’s greatest destinations allowing guests to travel whilst viewing Picassos and Segals hanging within the spacious interiors.

Centred above the opulent sofas hangs a custom made Chelsom chandelier dressed with 350 individual rods each containing 5 or 6 mouth blown glass spheres in a mixture of mirrored and clear crystal glass with the light reflected off the highly polished metal frame. Were those passengers from the great early twentieth century liners able to come back today and cruise on the Explorer, they would no doubt feel completely at home in the opulent luxury of her magnificent interiors.

Trilux Office Lighting Contributes To 40% Reduction In Connected Load For Watershed Bristol Lighting Specifier

Arup’s lighting team developed and specified an attractive, all-LED design for the lighting of public, conference and office areas at the well-known and much-loved arts centre Watershed in Bristol. TRIUX Lighting was chosen to provide ultra-modern, light and airy lighting for the back-office zone.

To read the full case study visit the TRILUX Experience: www.trilux.com

Mike Matthews, TRILUX Project Engineer Midlands & South West Region, describes, “The main objective for the office area was to have a lighting scheme which was invisible and modern, that would help to rejuvenate and refresh the admin areas for staff. Our Lateralo range provided the optimum solution. The innovative optic provides outstanding visual comfort, ideal for working offices. Visually it provides a striking office statement but when switched-off the optic is transparent, enabling the extremely flat luminaire to discreetly float in the space.” 30

The building’s original lighting installation included layers of luminaires installed during previous maintenance or refurbishment programmes. In many cases, these luminaires were fitted with inefficient tungsten halogen lamps. The new all-LED installation prioritised flexibility and took full consideration of both the building’s original architectural features and current occupancy patterns. Laura Walder, Watershed, Head of Facilities comments, “Our new office lighting creates a bright and uplifting atmosphere. We were aware our lighting wasn’t up to scratch and spent a long time choosing a replacement that would add to the architecture of the spaces and make the most of our high ceilings. Our new lights are lot more comfortable to work under and ideal for screens. Plus, the design is really striking and looks great against our industrial style backdrop.” The overall result is a more attractive and flexible lighting system as well as one that has helped to reduced Watershed’s lighting-related connected load by 40%.

Selfridges Designer Studio: A union of art, fashion and retail

Nulty has recently completed work on the first phase of Selfridges new Designer Studio, which has recently opened its doors to London’s most fashion conscious shoppers. The new space is designed to provide a fresh and contemporary shopping experience – one that unites the world of art, fashion and retail together.

36

Anna Sandgren, Senior Lighting Designer

“The new Designer Studio has redefined the concept of shopping”

Spanning 17,000 sq ft, the retail space reflects the new way modern woman shop and dress. Housing over 60 international fashion brands including Moschino, Joseph, J.W.Anderson, Kenzo and Christopher Kane the retail concept also features architectural installations by leading artists such as Anna Lomax and Gary Card. Working closely with Selfridges, and retail interior design specialists, Campaign, Nulty designed a minimal and low energy LED lighting solution that seamlessly blends with the Studio’s décor. By using a soft colour palette with slight variations in shades of white, the team were able to replicate a sense of serenity and imitate the thoughtful atmosphere of a gallery, whilst providing a consistent vernacular to the overall space.

Lighting Specifier

We wanted the lighting scheme to reflect that of a contemporary gallery space – to be still, and not disruptive.

Designed to minimise interference with the merchandise and installations at eye level, Nulty used integrated track and spotlights around the perimeter of the concessions, and recessed down lights along the central core. Track fittings are discreet and deliberately placed above each brand zone to subtly outline to shoppers where individual concessions are located. In addition, spotlights were positioned to provide gentle illumination to the art and merchandise, engaging the shoppers as they browse the displays and guiding them around the studio.

37

About Nulty+ Nulty+ is a nimble yet mighty architectural lighting design practice, with a healthy selection of awards and a diverse roster of clients across the commercial, hospitality, residential and retail sectors. With offices based in London and Dubai, our emphasis is on creating innovative, sustainable and energyefficient lighting schemes that aim to delight, excite and inspire those who use them.

Lighting Specifier

“It is no longer solely about selling clothes; it is about creating an experience for customers.

The bespoke changing rooms feature a softer level of lighting, designed to make shoppers feel comfortable and confident, whilst avoiding unnecessary shadows. Halo lighting around the mirrors wrap customers in a warm glow and spotlights above carry a brighter accent from the ceiling. The clever rendering of light sources was designed to pair with the instagram-worthy backdrops and selfie-sticks provided to capture the moment on camera. Energy-efficient lighting was a key factor in the design process throughout and the team managed to achieve this with approximately 15 watts per square metre. This is the second design that Nulty has delivered for Selfridges this summer, having previously completed the interior lighting for the iconic department stores first all LED scheme, the Body Studio, which opened in July 2016.

P

lessey, a leading expert in the manufacture of lighting and sensing products and components, is pleased to announce that its LEDs will be lighting up the Compton Verney Park, Warwickshire, in a lighting spectacular entitled “IN LIGHT” to commemorate the 300th anniversary of renowned British Landscape Architect; “Capability” Brown, who shaped the vision of the picture-perfect English countryside. The Plessey LEDs are being used in the Consol Solar Jars™ which are manufactured by Suntoy, a South African based company. Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park are using 1000 Consol Solar Jars™ as one of its key set pieces. Plessey’s GaN on Silicon LEDs are being used as they offer manufacturers unique flexibility when designing custom light fittings due to their compact, eco-friendly and sustainable nature.

40

This is the first time globally, that wireless DMX technology has been used to activate so many solar powered lanterns in an art exhibition of this magnitude. The technological challenge was made easier in collaboration with UJ (University of Johannesburg) and their research facility RC (Resolution circle). Compton Verney Park Visual artist Laurent from Creatmosphere, a cross-genre studio specialising in the interplay of light as art between architecture and space, has been commissioned to create a light spectacular as has never been seen before using the Consol Solar Jars™. Plessey LED Sales Director Giuliano Cassataro said, “By using 1000 Consol Solar Jars™; a product proudly conceptualized by Consol Glass and manufactured by Suntoy in South Africa using Plessey’s GaN on silicon LEDs, Laurent will be filling an entire field with pinpoints of

Lighting Specifier light to map the rich and diverse history of green spaces in a creative and captivating way. Three centuries later, Lancelot “Capability” Brown’s work is still celebrated and lives on. We are thrilled to be playing a small part in this creative initiative through supplying our LEDs into the Consol Solar Jars™ and to our customer Suntoy in South Africa.” Suntoy Managing Director Harald Schulz commented, “We here at Suntoy, together with our European distributors Sonnenglas, are enormously proud to have our Consol Solar Jars™ with the Plessey LEDs play an integral and creative part in this initiative. Seeing it being used in this way and not just as originally intended (as a reading light and portable solar lantern), demonstrates its potential as a fun, eco-friendly and sustainable alternative light supply that makes it easy to go green. eggiani Lighting’s Yori and Envios LED projectors have been incorporated in a new lighting scheme for the Chapel at the prestigious Corpus Christi College, Oxford, as part of a major refurbishment project. In coordination with GBS Architect Oxford and dpa lighting consultants designed and implemented the new lighting throughout the chapel to enhance the stunning architectural interior whilst ensuring that the new lighting allowed for all the appropriate scenes and flexibility required by a space which is used for a diverse range of functions. The refurbishment of the Chapel to provide a modern, energy-efficient lighting scheme was purposely scheduled so as to coincide with the College’s quincentenary year celebrations in 2017. The exacting brief from the college was created to ensure that the refurbishment of the 500 year-old, Grade I Listed chapel remained faithful to all the original architecture and

finishes. Reggiani’s Yori fittings with 13W LED source were supplied on track with 21 degree and 51 degree reflectors, mounted vertically into carved niches within the stone reveals of the adjacent windows each side of the Altar. With three spotlights on each track, these were directed to illuminate the Altar and the painting behind it. The painting itself had been restored prior to the refurbishment project but the new lighting, with its excellent colour temperature, allows the painting to be appreciated in a way in which it has not been seen for decades. The Yori fittings also incorporate a phase dimming driver to allow for gradual dimming as and when required. Reggiani's Envios 13W LED projectors were also used for the scheme and were positioned on the external roof to the rear of the large, central stained glass window.

With a 71 degree beam angle and 4000k colour temperature, this created a backlit effect which allowed the deep colour and intricate detail to be displayed from within the Chapel, forming an absolutely splendid interior centrepiece.

Lighting scheme plays major role in chapel refurbishment

Ian Clarke, Associate at dpa lighting consultants commented “The lighting scheme had all the normal restrictions and challenges of a protected heritage building. All lighting had to be carefully co-ordinated with the architectural elements regarding cable routes, housing of control equipment etc. It was very important that the light sources performed well under dimming to ensure a well-controlled end result. Having a common light source, the Reggiani luminaires offered excellent consistency producing just the right effect.

Good exterior lighting of a property, be it in the gardens or of the building itself, can be one of the most influential factors in how private homes or commercial premises look and function at night. From a welcoming entrance to reassuring security, most people rely on lighting without really giving it due thought or consideration early on in a project.

A

s a result, the opportunity to add extra dimensions such as areas of tranquillity, interest and safety can be lost.

To have a beautifully landscaped and planted garden disappear at 4.30 in the afternoon seems such a shame when the clients could still be enjoying their new garden as a visual backdrop through the windows of their beautiful home or country house.

Constant exposure to the elements and extremes of temperature, both place high demands on the exterior electrical installation and the light fittings themselves. Good exterior lighting can add a whole new dimension to the gardens you design, maintain and even build, creating visual statements, enhancing atmosphere, altering colour and emphasising texture. Areas of darkness, shadow and shade are just as important as the light itself and it is this dynamic, almost theatrical, contrast that adds subtlety, excitement, tranquillity and even mystery. It can positively affect mind, body and spirit.

Light defines space, emphasises texture and form, enhances colour, creates atmosphere, mood and in the more practical sense, allows us to see what we are doing and to move safely from one area to another without injury. For garden designers, landscapers and members of the public, exterior lighting offers an exciting prospect for the client in presenting an alternative perspective by night, in effect creating two different gardens.

Exterior lighting does require its own robust infrastructure which needs to be taken into consideration as early into the project as possible.
