STYLES & WOOD DELIVERS £1.2M HOSPITAL REFURBISHMENT

Integrated property services and project delivery specialist Styles&Wood has completed a £1.2 million clinical refurbishment scheme to create a new specialist women’s healthcare facility at Chesterfield Royal Hospital in Derbyshire. The 21-week project involved the complete strip-out and remodelling of the hospital’s Women’s Health Unit and Trinity Ward, to bring its gynaecology services together in one modern high quality facility. Styles&Wood’s specialist health service team – which has extensive experience operating in working hospital environments – was appointed following a competitive tender process. The team employed special infection control partitions and technology designed to help prevent the spread of dust and debris, to enable work to be carried out around live clinical services. The project included the identification and removal of asbestos, the installation of new M&E services and saw the two wards transformed with a modern, high quality finish providing new reception, triage and treatment areas as well as individual 5-bed wards and secondary service rooms. Richard Hall, Account Principal from Styles&Wood, said: “We’ve created an attractive, secure and efficient space with a very high quality finish which will significantly enhance the excellent patient care delivered by the team at Chesterfield. “The health sector is a key strategic market for Styles&Wood. Delivering complex schemes around live clinical services presents specific challenges. The solid in-house
expertise we’ve developed in this field is seeing health projects account for a growing share of the group’s revenues, climbing five per cent in the past 12 months alone.” Linda Gustard, Head of Midwifery and Senior Matron for Gynaecology at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the way the two wards look and, in particular, how it will improve the privacy and dignity of the WHU patients by bringing all gynaecology out-patient clinics into one place. The WHU has three clinic rooms where we’ll see patients who previously came to out-patient suite one, we also have a completely separate area and waiting room for the women coming to our early pregnancy assessment unit along with other separate areas for out-patient procedures and day case surgery and completely private areas for changing. “Our gynaecology patients will notice a big difference as will anybody returning to Trinity ward. We’ve incorporated the same styles, furnishings and relaxing artwork that you will have seen in our birth centre. It will allow for a much smoother transition from the birth centre to the maternity ward, and additional features there include a milk preparation room and parent’s rest room. The feedback we’ve had from our patients has been overwhelmingly positive.” The project is the second which the Altrincham-headquartered business has successfully completed for Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (CRH), after being appointed to design and deliver a new entrance to the hospital following a devastating fire in 2011.

Volcanic Bath Erupts into UK Market
Changing places to achieve inclusive status
Saniflo, the total solution provider
Meet the Etna. A bath that unites a luxurious bathing experience within an artistic bathroom centrepiece that is wholeheartedly cost-effective.
The target of becoming ‘the most accessible city in Europe’ is set in Manchester with the opening of the local government’s first Changing Places toilet.
Including two innovative technologies, the Etna features nano silver technology which coats the bath in a protective shield of nano particles to create an anti-bacterial layer which is also self-cleaning. But it is the Etna system itself which is quite simply ground-breaking. Connected to your central heating system the bath not only retains its water temperature but acts as a bathroom radiator too, becoming an incredibly energy and water saving solution within the bathroom. Furthermore, the choice of lighting provides a chromo-therapy bathing experience.
The new public toilet facility, in Manchester’s Town Hall Complex in Lloyd St, enables disabled people and their carers to be able to enjoy the city for as long as they like, without worrying about access to appropriate toilets.
In commercial settings, most customers want to ensure continuity of business. The Sanicubic contains 2 separate pumps for absolute reliability and power. Each is fitted with a high performance maceration system and the two pumps operate alternately, ensuring even wear of the motors. In the event of inflow overload, such as a busy Saturday night in a city night club or a Sunday morning in a B&B, both motors run at the same time.
Ultimately, this bath deserves to be named after one of Europe’s largest volcanos as it is a force of nature in itself.
The Changing Places toilet is larger than the usual wheelchair accessible (disabled) toilet, to accommodate the user and their carer. www.clos-o-mat.com E: info@clos-o-mat.com tel 0161 969 1199

With equipment supplied by Manchester-based Clos-o-Mat, the new purpose-built Changing Places public toilet is the first of its kind planned by Manchester City Council. Steve Dingley from sub-contractor Gariff Construction, commented, “Clos-o-Mat is a very professional company which helped ensure a smooth site installation.”

If on the rare occasion one pump should fail, the other pump takes over, guaranteeing continuity of business and happy punters. The Sanicubic is an extremely hard working macerator that can take up to 340 litres of water a minute. It pumps up to 11 metres vertically through 50mm pipework and 100 metres horizontally, or a lesser combination of both. Trendsetting Industrial style Bringing sense to lighting
With the trend for utilitarian interior design taking hold, Solus Ceramics introduces the stylish Replicate range, a concrete inspired floor and wall tile that embodies a modern industrial aesthetic.

News
Replicate is influenced by urban architectural trends and industrial landscapes, and features nine contemporary colours including raw greys and rustic browns.

The range reflects the patterns, colours and irregularities that appear in polished concrete and also display variations that look similar to flaking plaster. Some of the tiles have also been designed to evoke oxidized metal, presenting a chic rusted finish. In addition the range also includes an interesting option that features fractured images of beautiful flowers within the stone. Perfect for creating a contemporary but distressed design, Replicate is available in a number of large format sizes, which can be used to create flowing uninterrupted floor and wall spaces: plank shaped ‘floorboard’ style pieces and standard sizes. Feature Bathroom lighting is becoming more desirable, but until now the choices of switching have been severely limited. (Pull-cords, PIRs or outside switching). Sensorbility, has therefore developed the NEW Bathroom Switch controller, with Dimmer and Timer variants; thus allowing bathroom designers far more flexibility when it comes to lighting design and operation within bathrooms. The variations of the new controller include simple on/off switching, ramp-up dimming, ramp-down switch-off and time delay switch-off. Wired to our proven Bathroom Switch Sensor Pads, which can be placed behind most materials such as Ceramic Tiles, Wood, Plastic, Glass, and even Metals, users can create switches or dimmers in virtually any shape and situation. Tiles covering Sensor Pads are adhered with silicone allowing access should it be necessary. In Bathrooms, these Sensor Pads can even be placed behind tiles reachable from the bath or shower (zones 1&2) and thus allow safe switching and dimming. The new Bathroom Switch controllers can be activated from up to 12 low voltage (5vdc) Sensor Pads, so for example a Dimmer Controller can be operated from a Sensor Pad by the door and then the lights dimmed by touching a tile whilst in the bath. Most types of lighting can be operated by the Bathroom Switch; this includes incandescent bulbs, halogens (mains and low voltage), LEDs and low energy bulbs. Sensorbility Ltd. Relcross LCN Auto Equalizers Aid Democracy at Aylesbury Vale.
Design freedom and solutions to modern environmental issues are a complex requirement.
The doors of Aylesbury Vale’s Council Chamber can be now opened and closed by Relcross LCN Auto Equalizers. Both entrances to the ‘Oculus’ at the Council’s Gateway offices and conference centre in Aylesbury feature two pairs of double doors at either end of an entrance vestibule. All these doors have been fitted with Auto Equalizers controlled by wall mounted push pads that each open and close one pair of doors.
Alu-Timber EFT provides thermally efficient Larch timber with time tested aluminium for protection. To maximise spans and centres, a wide range of timber mullions and transoms are available. Larch also offers aesthetic benefits; grain deepens over time providing a stunning solution.
Many standard door closers could not be fitted to doors of this size or could not cope with the fire specifications. Roger Hudman of installer Rowsman Ltd suggested the pneumatic powered Relcross system as he has had considerable success with it before.

Remodelled County Hall thriving as a civic and community hub Bright, airy and with a main priority to reduce energy consumption by 40 per cent were the requirements when Reynaers Aluminium was contracted to provide their quality aluminium window and door solutions for the remodelled County Hall in Trowbridge. Run by Wiltshire County Council, the ÂŁ22 million refurbishment project incorporates a 1930s civic building and a tired 1970s office extension with an underutilised external courtyard. With many stakeholders operating out of the town centre building, flexibility for future developments was fundamental to the design, as well as the heavy emphasis on energy efficiency. It was the task of architects Stride Treglown, working closely with Wiltshire County Council, along with structural engineers Integral Engineering, to design and develop the transformation of the existing site into a multifunctional facility. Key to this involved close and early liaison with stakeholder in order to establish the full functional requirements of County Hall upon completion of the first phase. This was particularly important as library services along with a new Registry Office and restaurants all had to be accommodated within a dynamic environment, key to the effective delivery of council services.
www.reynaers.com
The success of the remodelling and renovation recently culminated in the County Hall Remodelling project receiving the British Council for Offices 2013, Regional Award for Refurbished/Recycled offices. In selecting the development the judges commented, “This challenging project has transformed a dated building into a modern and vibrant workplace. The creation of a community hub, combining informal areas, reception facilities and restaurants has been well received by the public and local authority staff.” The external courtyard of County Hall is now covered with a new ETFE ‘bubble’ roof, creating a vibrant public space between the existing buildings. The remaining sides of the courtyard are opened up to a new public library, dining area, registry services and meeting rooms, utilising Reynaers glazing systems CW 60-SC and capped, CW 50 capped, Eco windows and doors and the heavy duty Vision 50 ground entrance. Offering high performance solutions for a range of specifications, Reynaers CW 50 curtain wall systems provided the optimum choice for both thermal insulation and flexibility of design for much of the glazed facades. For the larger, heavier glass surfaces, the thermally improved CW 60 curtain wall system – ideal for renovation projects due to its ability to hold a weight of up to 450kg per glass panel within sloping, vertical and curved constructions, was installed. Reynaers Eco windows and doors were used extensively throughout the project for their aesthetically pleasing design combined with high energy efficient properties. These offer a significant contribution to the overall aim to reduce the energy consumption of the building. The windows provide thermal insulation levels of 2.20 W/m²K Uf, depending on the frame/vent combination in line with all the latest requirements.
Providing 200,000sqft of modern open plan working environment for 1,500 Wiltshire Council employees alone, extremely high durability within ground floor windows and doors was vital. Reynaers Vision 50 door solutions are designed specifically for heavy traffic areas, such as shopping centres, so was the natural choice for the County Hall. Available with a variety of mechanisms for both inward and outward openings, these too provided the high performance and durability along with the flexibility required to meet the aims of the project. Paul Duffy, Sales Director of Reynaers Aluminium said: “There were two key requirements for this project; the need to reduce energy consumption significantly, and the need to incorporate an element of flexibility in the design for future developments within the complex. “The Reynaers Aluminium solutions identified for installation were all developed with these needs in mind and have been proven many times before to deliver optimum results, so we are confident they will assist considerably to the overall project aims.” The Main contractor for the project was Kier Construction, working with fabricator System Glaze. A BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating has been targeted due to the high level of energy savings made via a culmination of energy efficient glazing, thermally upgraded walls and roof. As part of the remodelling a complete services overhaul and upgrade was undertaken, which included the installation of a highly energy efficient heat pump system, in order to significantly reduce the energy consumption. Army personnel at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, have saluted the renovation work carried out to their Berkshire training college by Ventrolla South East. After the existing windows, dating back to 1862, were given their marching orders due to their poor condition, the timber renovation specialists were drafted in to upgrade the ageing sashes. As part of a £7.5 million refurbishment across two years, the Grade II listed building, used by the Army Medical Directorate, presented 450 windows in dire need of complete renovation and upgrade due to many years of exposure to the elements. The majority of sashes were one and a half metres tall with larger ground floor windows reaching two and half metres. The deteriorated condition of both the sashes and frames meant the building was very draughty with many of the windows being rotten and inoperable. To remedy these problems the rotten timber was routed out of the original box frames, and replaced with Ventrolla’s patented epoxy resin VR90. Bespoke slim double glazed windows were manufactured to match the existing window profile, and fitted into the newly renovated frames. Preserving the original sash windows was just as important as improving the energy efficiency of the building.
www.ventrolla.co.uk
Following this process, the unique Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS) was installed to combat draughts and reduce external noise. The sash cords were then replaced, pulleys serviced and sashes correctly balanced to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the windows.
VENTROLLA SERVICES ‘DRAUGHTED’ IN TO HELP SANDHURST
Andy Meachen, Project Manager of the Military Academy, said: “The service that Ventrolla provided was excellent and we were very pleased with the final result. We have really benefited from the renovation work as the building is noticeably warmer, there are no more draughts and the windows now open easily.” “We were very concerned about maintaining the aesthetics of the building and being sympathetic to its heritage, Ventrolla managed this beautifully.” “Due to their professionalism and craftsmanship, we have also asked them to start work on our Old College renovation project too.” The Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst was founded in 1947 and offers military, practical and academic training.
Ventrolla offers a bespoke renovation service for timber sliding sash and casement windows as well as timber doors. The central office is in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, with additional offices located throughout the Ireland and the UK. Rainwater Harvesting – from Polypipe The Polypipe Rainstream rainwater harvesting system is available as a gravity fed or a pressurised system. Within a gravity fed system, water is pumped from the Rainstream Tank to a header tank in the loft. The water is then fed to each appliance by gravity. Pressurised systems use a pump to feed water directly to the appliance or appliances on demand. The units come pre-assembled ready for installation - you can select from a wide range of tank sizes to meet your specific needs - and the rainwater harvested by the system goes through a three stage filtration process, down to 130 microns. Installation of a Rainstream system from Polypipe will reduce mains water usage by around 50% - a valuable saving particularly if you're on a metered water supply. Contract Works Insurance for Those Wanting to Refurbish or Build an Extension If you are refurbishing or extended your building or erecting a new one, you will need insurance to be in place from the moment works start, to when they finish. The type of policy that covers loss or damage to the new works is known as “Contractors All Risks” or sometimes “Contract Works.” We have dealt with this type of cover for many years and know from experience that many property owners believe that their current insurance policy for a building being refurbished or extended will automatically cover them for all new works whilst in progress. Sadly, this is not usually correct – although you must remember to inform your current insurers of any work being undertaken before it starts, plus when it is completed, advise them of any changes plus any increase of rebuilding cost. Editor’s Choice New Suppliers Get Screwfix Seal Of Approval
Scolmore adds New Media Modules
Leading multi-channel trade supplier Screwfix is continuing to back innovation after listing more than 170 new products on its popular website. As ownership of portable electronic devices - such as smart phones, cameras and E-readers - continues to increase, so too does the number of leads and adaptors required to keep these devices charged. Scolmore Group has come up with a simple and neat solution with its new USB Charging Module, which negates the need for a myriad of charging leads and means just one USB cable is required to charge all devices. Designed for easy installation into a 25mm back box and with a charging capacity of 1000mA, the Scolmore USB Charging Module is a standard clip-in 25mm x 50mm Euro module design. It is available in either a white or black finish and can be fitted into all Scolmore’s media plates to complement any installation. An ideal retrofit product, the application potential is enormous with homes, offices, schools, hotels, education, leisure outlets and transport interchanges allset to benefit. One company which is already benefitting from their online listing with Screwfix is Centurion Europe. After meeting the Screwfix buyers at the ‘Innovation Day’, Centurion Europe’s sales director, John Burley, impressed the team with the company’s stencil letter and number kits and lockout electrical safety kits. Both products are now listed on the Screwfix website, allowing Doncaster-based Centurion Europe to reach a new customer base. For many of the companies taking part in the online trial, this is the first time their products have been made available through a large supplier. Brett Permeable paving meets the complex drainage needs of a car park site
Integritank waterproofing protection for exclusive Goodman's Fields development
Onyx 20mm – Another New Exciting Product
Permeable paving supplied by Brett Landscaping has provided an effective Sustainable Drainage Solution (SUDS) for a car park site in Cheltenham.
Stirling Lloyd's Integritank high performance structural waterproofing membrane is being used to protect a prestigious new mixed use development in the heart of the City of London.
Long Rake Spar continually strive to introduce unique new products to the trade that have a high sell through rate, whilst offering a sound profit return.
Cheltenham Architects car park is part of a complex that includes an adjoining three-storey Victorian building and garden. The complex is designed in such a way that requires a specific functional infiltration method to cope with excessive water levels, while preventing detrimental effects from flooding – something which the site has previously experienced. Brett Landscaping used its PermCalc design software, focusing on specific techniques and detailing to achieve the optimum mix of functionality and aesthetics.
Main contractors Berkeley Homes required a high quality structural waterproofing system with a proven track record of successful use on podium decks, apartment balconies and green roof areas and some 2,200m2 of Integritank was applied by Stirling Lloyd Construction. For further information on Stirling Lloyd please contact E: marketing@stirlinglloyd.com W: www.stirlinglloyd.com Enq. 154
The sales of our recently launched, uniquely different Flamingo chippings have excelled in this respect, already outselling many established products such as Plum and Blue Slate in both, bulk bags and pre-pack; a fantastic achievement for this relatively new product. Following on from this success we now introduce our 20mm ONYX a further unique, highly decorative chipping. The enriching, golden, buff and apricot tones of this 20mm angular chipping uplift and contrast beautifully with paving. Onyx is available to order in either bulk bags or pre-pack bags with complimentary samples available by immediate delivery. Visit – www.longrakespar.co.uk/ or call : 01629 636210

NEW BRUSH CUTTER FOR SPRING & SUMMER FROM MARUYAMA STABLE Maruyama is launching a new power tool for spring and summer says its UK importer. The Maruyama BCV5020 50CC Semi Clearing Brush Cutter will be available through Leicestershire-based DMMP Ltd. “Maruyama is a company which constantly develops its techniques and ideas,” explains DMMP managing director Marcus Palmer. “This latest model benefits from their fastidious strive for excellence as it exceeds the company's already high standards of technology, performance and design.” The ultra lightweight BCV5020 has a new anti-vibration system, which uses oversized volumetric anti-vibration dampers, located in tandem on the front side and the engine side. The round shape of the vibration damper is streamline and compact for smooth operation. It also has a new gear case. The revised-size gear wheel provides more durability than conventional brushcutters and a pressed gear blade shaft for reducing backlash. The inside gear case has improved machining accuracy, and the blade shaft angle has been revised to 60 degrees (55 is conventional for brush cutters). The BCV5020 has a useful tool-free handle adjustment: the central wing nut enables easy adjustment without the use of tools. For transportation and space-saving storage, the handle can be rotated 90 degrees. Maruyama NE engines are engineered with high compression ratio (7.5) resulting in higher torque and power. “This is an excellent, hardworking power tool,” concludes Marcus"representing a good value, quality investment. Glass & Glazing ISG Secures £6.5 Million London Art Deco Restoration The Senate House library houses world class Arts, Humanities and Socialcience collections ISG has been awarded a £6.5 million project to refurbish the north section of Senate House – the iconic Portland Stone building that houses the University of London’s world-famous library and central administration facilities. Formerly used as the Ministry of Information during World War II, the Grade II* listed Art Decoinspired modernist building at the centre of the university’s campus in Russell Square. The first phase of the project sees ISG carry out a systematic strip out of the accommodation, followed by sensitive demolition works to break out the existing floor slabs and insertion of new structural steelwork. A large access void will be created within the concrete floor and an existing basement-to-roof riser will be stripped out, the space reconfigured and a new lift installed. The internal remodelling of Senate House includes the provision of new partition walls to create a library, with book racking, shelving and research facilities. ISG will also deliver new lecture theatres, conference facilities and a number of cellular offices and studies. The high specification fit out is being carried out in an architecturally sensitive manner to preserve the heritage of the building, using traditional materials and skilled craftspeople to repair lime stone plaster, interior timberwork and stone cornices.
The Portland Stone building is reputedly the inspiration for George Orwell’s description of the Ministry of Truth in the novel 1984. Secondary glazing will be either replaced or upgraded to improve the building’s thermal and acoustic performance and existing parquet flooring repaired and rejuvenated. ISG is delivering a full turnkey solution for the University of London involving the sourcing and supply of all fixtures, fittings and equipment. A key element of the modernisation works includes the installation of modern and efficient mechanical and electrical systems. Stuart Deverill, ISG’s Southern regional managing director, commented: “ISG has built up a wealth of experience successfully delivering projects involving complex structural alterations within some of London’s most iconic and architecturally sensitive buildings. The demand for better performing accommodation has never been greater and this is driving a market where ISG’s specialist knowledge and expertise in complex space reconfiguration and retrofit services upgrades continues to be highly valued.” For further information about ISG, its companies and its offerings, please visit our website www.isgplc.com

Electric Boiler Heat Packs With a significant increase in the awareness of electric boilers for wet central heating systems many heating engineers are genuinely considering this type of system as a feasible replacement where natural gas is not available or there are issues with concealed gas flues. An electric boiler on a wet central heating system presents all the controllability that a gas fired central heating system offers. As no flue is involved and no gas analysis is required the installation of the system will be a lot quicker than that of a gas boiler. The Electric Heating Company recognise that “Time is Money” and as such have developed Electric Boiler & Cylinder Heat Packs that incorporate all the necessary components (with the exception of radiators, radiator valves and pipe-work) for a complete electric heating & hot water system. CLEARVIEW STOVES
Britain’s leading manufacturer of clean burning wood stoves 6 GOOD REASONS TO INSTALL A CLEARVIEW STOVE 1. Clearview Stoves are the best Clearview have been designing and manufacturing wood-burning stoves for nearly 25 years. They were the first company ever to have a multi fuel stove approved for burning wood in smokeless zones and since then have continued to set the standards that others aspire too. Many people consider them to be the best in the world.
2. Clearview Stoves are efficient A Clearview Stove is over 70% efficient while most open fires are only 10% efficient. A Clearview in the living room keeps you warm and cozy in the place you spend most of your time.
3. Clearview Stoves are a joy to use There is nothing quite so elemental as the log fire, nothing that excites the imagination like its flames. It’s one of life’s little pleasures. A Clearview Stove offers an exceptional view of the fire, is easy to light and burns for long periods unattended.
4. Wood is a renewable fuel that’s good for the environment During their lifetime trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, provide food and shelter for wildlife and add beauty to our lives. Burning wood releases no more CO2 than would its eventual decay. Simply put, burning wood just warms you, not the planet.
5. Wood and Clearview put you in control The huge, centralized; energy companies can be unreliable. When a storm interrupts the electrical supply, you can be left stumbling around in the dark with no heating to speak of. However, a Clearview wood stove is 100% reliable and keeps you safe, and warm during a power-cut.
6. Wood saves you money! We almost forgot to mention it, but for many, wood is the cheapest fuel you can use. Best of all, it grows on trees!

SOLAR FIRST FOR SPEEDHEAT
A converted Victorian village school has become the first home in the UK to run electrical floor heating from Speedheat by solar power. Generating at least part of their electricity needs from solar panels was one of the first things that Richard and Yvonne Gurney considered after the family moved into the five bedroom home, which already benefited from Speedheat underfloor heating throughout under a mix of floor finishes. Halo Energy designed of three sets of roof-mounted panels capable of supporting an 8kw supply – double that of more typical residential systems but less than required for commercial use – taking into account the slate roof of an 1830s building with a modern extension. It’s daylight, not sun, that triggers the panels into action, so even during the
dullest times of the year the system is still making a valuable contribution to the family’s energy needs. The sums add up, too. The mains electricity supplier pays for half of everything generated from the roof panels at 14.5p per kw. In the first eight months, which included a full winter, the Gurneys received £550 to offset against their overall bill. It has also led to a different way of using electricity, especially the heating. Speedheat’s advanced thermostat controls are adjustable to suit how and when the family uses the heating to maximise the electricity generated during daylight and keep the house cosy. Said Yvonne, who runs her Verbal Copywriter and coaching consultancy from home, “We are not neutral in terms of our bill, but we’re fairly close to being carbon neutral in our electricity use.”

Highly valued Specflue customer Dave Clarke & Son is a long established heating and plumbing family firm in Hinckley, Leicestershire whose professionalism has been truly rewarded and noted with the three major awards in their sector.
50
The company has just picked up the title of Energy Efficient Installer Of The Year In the Heating & Ventilating sector at the prestigious event held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel in Mayfair. The award reflects the work they have done in recent years to promote high quality installation work using the latest equipment designed to use less energy, create less emissions and reduce heating bills. The Specflue products involved include their pioneering stainless steel Xcel HEATBANK ® thermal storage technology, the elegant MCZ biomass stove and boiler selection and of course the all embracing original flues range. As Dave Clarke observes” It’s always nice to be recognised for what we do, day to day, for a living. There are so many quality firms operating in our industry that to be singled out for an award like this is humbling. Dixons Retail chooses Daikin Sky Air for improved energy efficiencies Dixons Retail, operator of the Currys and PC World brands, has a portfolio of more than 500 stores in the UK. As part of its corporate policy, the company strives to minimise its impact on the environment. Its ethos is to sell the best leading-edge technological products possible and to reflect this policy in the systems used to heat, cool and light its stores.
In this application five condenser units are connected to five of Daikin’s new self-cleaning ceiling cassettes, which run down the centre of the store. Together with an RTD-20 Retail Economiser intelligent control system, the system is designed to provide Dixons Retail with the highest levels of energy efficiency at the 8,000 sq. ft. store.
As part of its rolling refurbishment programme, Dixons Retail is always looking for the highest energy efficient climate control systems to replace older, outdated models.
Daikin’s round flow cassettes blend with interior décor as they are integrated into the ceiling with only the decoration panel visible. This decoration panel is the secret to increasing comfort levels and providing the perfect climate conditions as the various flaps can be individually opened and closed to ensure that the heating and cooling are directed to where they are needed.
Take, for example, its Currys PCWorld shop at RichmondUpon-Thames. The store underwent refurbishment in October 2012 and as part of that work, outdated equipment running on the now banned R22 refrigerant needed to be replaced with a system that could deliver much higher levels of energy efficiency together with a reduced carbon impact. The company chose Sky Air Seasonal Smart condensers from Daikin UK. Seasonal Smart condensers offer at least 20% better performance than previous inverter solutions and exceed the recently introduced European Energy Related Products Directive legislation that sets minimum efficiency standards for air conditioning systems. They meet the needs of projects requiring greater levels of flexibility such as longer piping lengths, a wider operating range or EDP applications. Efficiency and comfort can be further enhanced with selectable evaporating and condensing temperatures. The system is discreet with limited visual and operating impact, creating and inviting atmosphere for customers. Key features t R-22/R-407C Replacement technology has been incorporated; replacement solutions deliver major energy savings, offering rapid payback and a cost-effective upgrade solution, phased for minimal downtime. t Guarantees operation in heating mode down to -20°C external temperature. t t A 75m pipe run to achieve longer runs for installation(100-140 class). t Compatibility with D-BACS – links your unit into the wider building management system. t Customisable evaporating & condensing temperatures to improve operating efficiencies. t 3 phase or single phase available for all classes.
The decoration panel also reduces maintenance as it conceals the auto cleaning function. This traps dust with a special filter that cleans itself once a day, and allows easy removal of the collected dust. The selfcleaning function can reduce energy consumption by up to a half, when compared with other systems.
operating and performing. We will definitely be looking at installing more of these systems in our stores over the coming 12 months.” Simon Oliver, whose company CCN Limited has worked with Dixons Retail for 30 years, was responsible for installing the Daikin system. He said: “The installation of the Richmond system was very straightforward. The store was closed for a total of four weeks for full refurbishment and the air conditioning installation was completed within two weeks during that time. We also fitted a similar system to the company’s Currys.Digital store in Camden Town, which took a week to install and commission. “The Camden Town store is situated in one of the busiest shopping streets in the country and Dixons Retail had been particularly concerned about the staining around the old ceiling cassettes. Daikin’s self-cleaning cassettes have solved this problem.”
Developed by Daikin UK, the RTD 20 Retail Economiser monitors and controls air conditioning systems, allowing different temperature settings for trading hours or non-trading periods where staff are at work. It adjusts depending on the comfort requirements of different parts of a store, such as main retail area, changing rooms, or till area. It also takes into account footfall and the external temperature to optimise internal conditions accordingly. The level of smart control offered can give real reductions in carbon footprint and running costs. Colin Braidwood, Energy Manager for Dixons Retail, was responsible for selecting the system. He said: “We are very pleased with the energy efficiency we are experiencing at Richmond, and at our stores at Camden Town and Victoria Station, which have also used Daikin products in their refurbishments in 2012. Ideally, I would like to judge a system over a full 12 month period, but the difference in energy efficiency that we are experiencing at this store so far is looking really good. “We also like the controls and visibility of the system as we can clearly see how the system is

Insulation For all new build or refurbishment projects windows and doors play a vital role in the overall energy efficiency of a building’s fabric. There are thousands of buildings in the UK that would benefit from upgrading the energy performance of the building fabric. Windows and doors play a vital role in minimising energy use, a more cost-effective way to reduce CO2 emissions in buildings often much better than costly and often ineffective, bolt-on measures. As part of a refurbishment scheme the replacement of existing windows with new high performance windows should be a top priority. In almost all the ‘top ten’ tip lists for improving energy efficiency you will find preventing heat loss (leakage) from windows right at the top of the list. This is good advice, but in the UK many of the generally available window styles and materials are not suitable for many reasons including building type and age, aesthetic considerations, or performance requirements. How to specify quality performance windows that qualify as sustainable in their construction is a real issue. Not everyone can (or wants to) build to Passivhaus standards, many older or character buildings will have a limit on the overall performance they can achieve. This requires a joinery specification that can provide the best option for reducing energy use, with a sympathetic design at a price that fits both performance and budget. This is where Ecomerchant excel as they have over 15 years’ experience in designing and delivering joinery.
This experience means that an option is available for almost all situations including period, listed and historic buildings which deserve particular attention to detail when considering replacement windows, additionally they may need conservation approval. Ecomerchant offer a broad range of performance
joinery in wood, aluminium clad and wood composite to suit a wide range of budgets including tilt and turn, casement, sliding sash, French doors, internal doors and external doors. Now for each application choice, price and performance can be combined into the optimum specification for any job.

Prevent a damp outside skin becoming a damp inside wall when an extension is added The exterior skin of a cavity wall is designed to become wet when rain falls. The cavity prevents that wetness from reaching the inside skin. Wherever the skins connect at lintel level, a dpc tray ensures the penetrating water is prevented from reaching the inside skin. Similarly all wall ties are shaped so water tracking along a tie drips off it into the cavity before it reaches the inner skin. The attachment to an existing exterior skin of an extension results in the original exterior skin becoming an internal wall below the new roofline. If the abutting roof is flashed only, there is nothing to prevent the penetrating wetness from gravitating downwardly into the new extension. The solution is to install cavity trays. The only cavitray awarded European Technical Approval and designed for insertion into existing walls is the Type X manufactured by Cavity Trays of Yeovil. This approved tray has many novel features that make the task of installation and compliance easy, swift and economical The Type X cavitray may be used to regularise construction junctions in new and existing structures to comply with the building Regulations.

Form over function, or function over form? Safety, fit for purpose, standards, ergonomics… not the usual starting points for designing aesthetically pleasing furniture. So how can you incorporate practicality without stifling creativity? The answer lies within a new resource for furniture designers, set to be launched in September at 100% Design, a trade show for the design industry. The Furniture Design Toolkit (FDT), created by the Furniture Industry Research Association, aims to provide designers with the tools needed to incorporate ergonomics, user trials standards and legislation into the design process. The Toolkit is the only design resource to contain this highly valuable information, provided by industry experts. FIRA’s FDT will be launched at 11am on Thursday 19th September at an exclusive event during 100% Design. A panel of design experts will discuss their views on the Toolkit and open the session up for questions. In addition, FIRA will be exhibiting and giving out information about the Toolkit throughout 100% Design (18-21 September) at Stand O33a. Levent Çaglar, FIRA’s Principal Ergonomist, said: “In today’s marketplace, to compete with low-priced imported products from abroad, UK manufacturers are concentrating on adding value through design expertise. For a product to be commercially successful, it needs to be attractive to users, fit for purpose and designed to sound ergonomic principles to ensure good usability; regardless of price point.” The toolkit will focus on three areas of furniture: t t t
Office furniture School furniture Contract/Hospitality furniture
It will include key information about ergonomics, user testing, task analysis and standards. Levent continued: “Designing new products using the Toolkit will significantly reduce the cost of development and the time taken by getting it right first time. The FDT provides designers with tools and guidance to help them concentrate on creating visually attractive and desirable products which meet all standards and are ready for market.” Following the launch at 100% Design, the Furniture Design Toolkit will be available to download from the website as an interactive PDF. The Toolkit can be accessed free of charge to members of the Furniture Industry Research Association or purchased for £90 by non-members. Established sixty four years ago, the Furniture Industry Research Association was set by the industry for the industry. It provides invaluable technical support to the entire furniture supply chain and funds projects for the benefit of the industry. 100% Design is the largest and longest running contemporary design event for industry professionals in the UK. Staged at London’s Earls Court Exhibition Centre, it is the commercial cornerstone event of the London Design Festival. Enhancing the working environment and reducing energy bills with the flick of a switch… Award-winning lighting company is leading the way when it comes to slashing energy usage and lowering carbon emissions. MHA Lighting, based in Greater Manchester, uses two-thirds of the energy of its closest competitors and has developed bespoke light fittings for a variety of clients from both public and private sectors. Most recently, MHA Lighting provided a powerful solution to renovate the lightning inside St. Mary’s Court, a 36,000 square foot commercial building on the Isle of Man allowing them to significantly reduce their lighting energy consumption – savings are estimated to exceed £300,000 and 850 Tonnes of Co2. MHA Lighting’s TiLites were chosen that supplied 80CRI and 4000 kelvin colour temperature. This particular combination can significantly enhance the working environment, which is also known to aid concentration – contributing to a greater feeling of wellbeing amongst the staff. The project saw a total of 227 awardwinning TiLite (TL) luminaires installed in the offices and lobby areas of the three companies, Charlemagne Capital, Nedbank Private Wealth and Tristao Services. This has reduced combined annual lighting energy consumption at St. Mary’s Court from, 153,925kW/h (annual cost of £20,780) to just 55,053kW/h. Mutual annual energy bills have therefore been reduced to an average of just £7,432 per annum. Through their low-energy LED Luminaires, MHA Lighting was also able to achieve a significant reduction in Co2 production for the offices, equating to product lifetime Co2 savings of 853 tonnes (an average of 55 tonnes per year). Due to the lighting system’s design and high-reliability, the units also extremely low maintenance and will run for 66,000 hours of continuous use. With Charlemagne Capital’s 14, Nedbank Private Wealth’s 15 and Tristao Services’ 13 hour a day operations – the lights will not need replacing for 16, 15 and 18 years respectively. This makes for additional savings on maintenance costs of £56,382 over the products’ lifetime – bringing total lifetime savings to £310,737.
How does the technology work? MHA is the only lighting manufacturer to use waveguide technology to shine light sideways into an encapsulation – not directly outwards. This avoids direct contact with the eye and provides a safe and efficient light output. The patented waveguide technology offers distinct advantages over other LED manufacturers as it allows the company to replicate the light quality and uniformity of traditional lighting. MHA also use acrylic rods to amplify and control the light output, reducing the number of LEDs required. This means they can use high power LEDs, draw less current and have no need to diffuse the output. Penn Wood Primary and nursery school branches out With neW building 'the tree house' In line with the eco-friendly ethos of Penn Wood Primary and Nursery School (PWS) based in Slough, the school has called in the services of Wernick to produce a building to meet their ‘sustainable’ themed criteria, a building justly called ‘The Tree House’. The primary aged population is at the highest it has been for 50 years, an increase that is unlikely to subside, with primary schools expected to face a further 18% rise in pupils by 2020. Discussing the concept of an expansion, head teacher Jane Girle was adamant that any new building was aesthetically pleasing and a mirror image of the main school building. The other primary objective was to ensure that the building conformed to the eco-friendly philosophy of the school. Fortunately, the highly receptive architects listened and worked
Constructing 3 new classrooms, together with two breakout rooms, Wernick, in conjunction with the appointed architects and the school’s own consultant cleverly utilised the space so cedar wooden cladding was matched carefully to the existing building and the roof of the new building was in line with the The classrooms themselves are bright, airy and well ventilated with air-conditioning. The new building does not appear to be out of place and blends in effortlessly with the whole school environment. The colour of the walls and carpets match the current school décor and the children in the Tree House do not feel segregated in any way from the main building. The construction was seamless – the modular buildings were
for teaching in the 21st century. Anne Sheridan, the business manager of the school, made this statement regarding why the new building was named ‘The Tree House’: “Sustainability is a very prominent ethos throughout our school; it is something that we try to inform all of our students about. We are happy to announce that we are the the key incentives behind the name. Another factor is that the school is immersed in nature, entirely surrounded by trees...so it simply seemed applicable.” The school opted for a modular building because it required an increased capacity in a short space of time; furthermore, the cost of the build was inherently far less than that of regular construction. Anne Sheridan also informs us that a great deal of research went into the building: Word of mouth speaks volumes, and through a continued correspondence with other schools in Slough we found that one name featured heavily, that name was Wernick. we visited other schools that had recently expanded to take a look at the work that had taken place and were very impressed with the results.”
began in earnest. The construction team were unobtrusive, and the noise levels were kept to a minimum and did not impact on the teaching and learning of the school. All of the staff are delighted with the new building and the classrooms; so much so that the school is currently in talks with SBC regarding a phase 2 expansion. All of the teachers conveyed a desire to move into the new building as soon as possible, expressing how much they believed it was in sync in terms of design, and welcoming the integration of state of the art ICT and air-con. St Giles-on-the-Heath School North Devon
A very special little school Wernick modular buildings When cost-effectiveness, a tight delivery time and minimum disruption are top priorities The Ofsted inspection report on St Giles-on-the-Heath School in Devon described it as “an outstanding and very special little school”. The three modules for the school’s new pre-school building were craned in over three hours one morning. Finishing work on the site took just eight weeks, giving an on-site construction time that was dramatically less than traditional build and without the noise, intrusion and disruption that traditional techniques bring with them. The exterior of Wernick modular buildings can be finished to suit our clients’ budgets and aesthetic choice. St Giles School’s new building is clad in Siberian Larch, a sustainable wood that complements the school’s environment. With the addition of this new purpose-designed building, St Giles School experienced a period of great positive change, of which Wernick Buildings were proud to be part.

National Treasures at Polesden Lacey
72
Kemper System’s Kemperol V210 has been used to safeguard the roof of National Trust Property, Polesden Lacey, with its many priceless antiques and collections. Located just outside Dorking, Polesden Lacey was originally constructed in the 18th Century and extensively remodelled in the Edwardian era. Not only does it boast breath taking views of the Surrey hills, it is also home to a large collection of paintings and antiques so, when a section of the house’s decorative copper and lead eaves guttering began to leak, The National Trust needed to arrange for a repair quickly to prevent any damage to the house or its
contents, but replacing the copper and lead would have put too big a hole in the much needed funds at their disposal. Specialist contractor, Imperial Leadwork, was brought in to overlay the 25m X 30cm section of perished decorative guttering with Kemper System’s Kemperol V210, to provide a cost effective repair with a guaranteed service life. Imperial Leadwork began by cleaning the copper and lead surface and making localised repairs before applying Kemper System’s D Primer. Once the primer had cured, the installation team applied the Kemperol V210 cold liquid resin.
The resin saturates a polyester reinforcement fleece and bonds directly to the substrate. Once cured the Kemperol system forms a seamless, durable and flexible waterproof membrane that cannot delaminate. Explains Peter Lane at Imperial Leadwork: “Replacing the decorative copper and lead eaves with copper and lead would not only be more costly but would also take more time. By opting for Kemper System’s Kemperol V210, The National Trust has used an alternative that looks authentic, is quick and costeffective to install and will provide a robust solution for many years to come.”

CERAMIC GRANITE CLADDING PROVIDES COST-EFFECTIVE FACELIFT AT PRIVATE HOSPITAL As part of a multi million pound refurbishment project at a Nuffield Health private hospital in Tunbridge Wells, ceramic granite ventilated façades supplied by Shackerley® have given the dated, red-brick exteriors a facelift. Architects at Kendall Kingscott in Bristol specified Shackerley’s Sureclad® ceramic granite cladding system to provide a new outer envelope that would present an upmarket contemporary image befitting the newly modernised healthcare facility. “Our aim was to dramatically improve the facilities and patient experience at the hospital“, commented Mark Palmer, Project Architect. “Whilst the interior refurbishment was our main priority, the exterior styling, dating back to 1968, needed of a radical makeover. Overcladding was the obvious solution.” The practice considered a wide range of different façade installation methods and materials before opting to use Shackerley’s Sureclad ventilated cladding system in conjunction with a travertine effect ceramic granite façade panel. “We were impressed by the appearance and quality of the ceramic granite,” said Mark. “From a distance it looks slick and streamlined as you would expect from an engineered material, yet at close quarters it has a very natural stone look with real depth and texture.”
beyond recognition according to Mark Palmer: “As a practice we’re very pleased indeed with the final results. Shackerley’s Sureclad ceramic granite cladding offers an attractive and extremely cost effective way to completely transform the appearance of a building and at the same time enhance its environmental performance. We will certainly consider this approach again for projects across our core business areas including healthcare, retail, education and custodial developments.”
For further information please contact Shackerley on 0800 783 0391 or visit www.shackerley.com Shackerley® and Sureclad® are both registered trademarks of the Shackerley (Holdings) Group Limited
Before
Specification of the Sureclad system also provided an opportunity to upgrade the environmental performance of the building. Kingspan K15 insulation was installed in the cavity behind the ceramic granite, significantly improving thermal efficiency. In comparison to other quality cladding materials and façade systems under consideration, Shackerley’s system proved to offer excellent value for money. Because ceramic granite is extremely strong and hard, with none of the flaws of stone in its quarried state, façade panels of just 12mm thick deliver exceptional building protection. The relative light weight reduces loadings on the building and panels can be handled, manoeuvred and installed on site more easily than many traditional, heavier cladding materials. Use of Shackerley’s standard 1200 x 600mm module minimised cutting operations and panels were supplied in an ‘installation ready’ format, reducing the need for on-site preparatory work. All prefabrication work was carried out at Shackerley’s ISO 9001 accredited manufacturing facilities, including precision undercut drilling and the securing of Sureclad metal straps using a patented stainless steel undercut anchorage system. The new look Nuffield Health Tunbridge Wells Hospital is now fully operational and the outward appearance of the building has changed

Hochiki Europe receives a standing ovation at the Harpa Reykjavík Concert Hall and Conference Centre A spectacular addition to the Icelandic cultural landscape, when the Harpa Reykjavík Concert Hall and Conference Centre opened its doors to the public in May 2011 it was unanimously acclaimed as one of Iceland’s most important contemporary buildings. As the city’s first purpose built concert hall, it successfully combines being used as a classical music venue – serving as the home to the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and The Icelandic Opera – with hosting conferences and exhibitions. The Harpa was the brainchild of Henning Larsen Architects and Batteríið, while the renowned artist, Ólafur Elíasson, designed the façade. It consists of a steel framework clad with 10,000 irregularly shaped glass panels of different colours that reference the columnar basalt common in Iceland’s terrain. The use of the glass panels provides a dramatic effect when the unique daylight in Iceland – which ranges from almost 24 hours in summer to the briefest glimpse of the sun above the horizon in winter – covers the building in a myriad of different colours. It consists of four halls, three of which are used for concerts. These comprise a main concert hall seating up to 1,800 people, a rehearsal hall that can also be used for concerts seating up to 450, and a chamber music hall seating 200. With events taking place on a daily basis, protecting the public and staff is vital and the building’s fire detection system plays an important role in keeping them safe. The project’s main contractor, IAV, began work in early 2008 and asked Iceland’s leading fire safety specialist, IP System ehf, to design, specify and commission the fire detection system. Kjartan Scheving, managing director of IP System, explains, ‘We have worked with IAV on many projects over the years, so when it came to implementing the life safety infrastructure at the Harpa they asked us to get involved. It was clear to me that the only way to ensure the level of reliability, quality and safety demanded was
to install state-of-the-art products from Hochiki Europe.’ Scheving and his team knew that traditional point detection would not be possible due to the Harpa’s very high ceilings. He comments, ‘Some of ceilings are over 70m high so three Hochiki Europe FIRElink aspirating fire detection systems were needed to provide the requisite level of cover above 10m. These are linked to four control panels which have 1,600 addresses assigned to them in 27 separate zones.’ Aspirating detectors are around 10 times more sensitive than general point detectors and are suitable where there is a high density of people and an early warning is desired. Explaining how the system works, Stuart Davies, Hochiki’s marketing manager, states, ‘The FIRElink aspirating unit consists of an enclosure that houses the electronics that are powered from a supply, and a fan inside it that draws air in via pipes that are connected to the unit. The air then passes across a laser light source that is projected into the air itself and if enough smoke particles are detected an alarm condition will be activated.’ The FIRElink systems are configured around Hochiki’s Enhanced Systems Protocol (ESP) – a robust addressable communications solution for intelligent fire detection and fully integrated systems. ESP delivers exceptionally secure signalling and also incorporates error-checking technology to safeguard the integrity of the data and ensure correct communication. The system also has features drift compensation technology that, when activated by the control panel, automatically recalibrates the detectors every 24 hours.’ The use of smoke machines within the auditoria necessitated the ability to turn off the detectors in these areas for up to four hours at a time. Scheving says, ‘Unwanted alarms are a serious problem for any premises but for concert halls they can be particularly disruptive, leading to the evacuation of the building and the interruption of
the event taking place. Being able to deactivate the detectors in specific zones gives designated personnel a chance to investigate the cause of the alarm before taking further action.’ Aesthetics at the Harpa are very important and design continuity has to be maintained at all times. Being able to install the FIRElink systems’ pipework in the ceiling voids helped ensure this, as did the availability of ALG-EN optical smoke detectors in black to match the colour of the ceilings in some of the rooms. The system also utilises a wide variety of other addressable devices from Hochiki Europe including HCP-E manual call points, YBO-BSB base sounder beacons, ACA-E multi sensors, ACB-E multi-heat sensors, CHQ-DIM dual input modules and CHQDRC dual relay controllers. The flexibility that the fire detection system boasts means that it can control many other aspects of the building services infrastructure such as the elevators, ventilation system, smoke curtains, smoke hatches and sprinkler system. It is also integrates and controls a public address/ voice alarm (PA/VA) system that has 1,032 speakers that can also be isolated in specific zones. IP System ehf spent a total of three years working at the Harpa and Scheving is delighted with what his team achieved. He concludes, ‘When we talked to the Reykjavík fire service they said that it was the most sophisticated fire detection system in Iceland. Since the Harpa opened it has proven 100 per cent reliable with no unwanted alarms, which goes to show that specifying products from Hochiki Europe was the right decision.’ For further information please contact Hochiki Europe on 01634 266569, email: e-marketing@hochikieurope.com or visit www. hochikieurope.com. Haddonstone helps to create pure luxury at Coworth Park The Dorchester Collection recently commissioned Haddonstone to supply the architectural stonework for their new luxury country house hotel and spa – called Coworth Park. The 70-room complex is based around a beautiful Georgian Manor House dating from 1776 and is set in 240 acres of picturesque Berkshire parkland. The design of the restored and enhanced building was conceived to acknowledge Coworth’s surroundings and the history of the manor house at the heart of the development. This meant using Haddonstone, with its ability to replicate the existing stonework on the main building, was a distinct advantage.
Working closely with EPR Architects and Galliford Try, Haddonstone provided all the architectural stonework for the project, matching the profiles of the original historic structure by taking mouldings from original stonework on site before the core structure was partly demolished and subsequently rebuilt. The models were then retouched to replicate the authenticity of the original designs before further production moulds were created. Haddonstone manufactured an array of architectural pieces, including: curved, ramped and standard balustrading for the outdoor terrace and gardens; string courses, parapets and copings; window cills; portico entablature; and decorative canopies.
Coworth Park is an example of how Haddonstone’s cast stone material can enhance and successfully refurbish an unique environment whilst meeting specific specifications. It also shows that original architecture and its associated classical landscape can be restored and enhanced by choosing a material which will complement the existing building and achieve the design aims desired. In this way the country’s architectural and landscape heritage can be preserved for future generations. Haddonstone is the UK’s leading manufacturer of landscape ornaments and architectural cast stonework. Established in 1971, the company manufactures an extensive range of high specification designs for restoration, refurbishment and new build projects – from garden ornaments such as statues, fountains and planters to architectural components including balustrades, columns, porticos, window surrounds, copings and pier caps. The company has an extensive standard range of designs and can also create custom designs to replicate. simple or intricate designs, to individual specifications in any quantity. Around 30% of all stonework manufactured by Haddonstone is custom-made, utilising the company’s extensive mould shop and production facility and the expertise of Haddonstone’s craftsmen. Haddonstone is a proud member of the British Made for Quality scheme with all designs being designed and manufactured at the company’s facilities in Northamptonshire.
Haddonstone is a unique form of cast limestone with a surface texture similar to Portland stone. In a number of important ways Haddonstone is markedly superior, one of its greatest advantages being price, which, piece for piece, is normally significantly less than that of the quarried alternative. Consequently, Haddonstone has been involved in many newbuild and refurbishment projects, including hotels, shopping centres and private houses as architects and designers around the world have seen the benefits of using cast stone. The company was a founder member of the UKCSA, has over 40 years of experience in the industry and exceeds the requirements of all relevant international standards. The technical qualities of the stone are supported by a 12-strong dedicated and knowledgeable contracts staff to assist all architectural projects.

The Cutting Edge of Screws and Fixings
Refurb
& Renovation
News
Rapierstar screws and fixings are manufactured to the highest quality, exceeding EU standards and carrying CE marking. StarTurn woodscrews and StarFix plugless masonry fixings deliver all round superior performance when compared with similar fixings due to the unique, European patented, StarForm™ cutting thread - providing faster insertion with reduced torque. The thread begins at the very point of the screw, which means that starting is virtually instant and a lubricated finish improves speed of insertion screws are also plated to exceed all industry technical recommendations. The unique StarForm™ cutting thread is a true cutting thread - unlike the thread forms found on other screw fixings which merely give the impression of a cutting thread due to the presence of (largely ineffectual) clearance channels. The StarForm™ thread provides superior performance by self tapping a reciprocal thread into the substrate. Benefits include; better resistance to the fixing pulling out of the anchor base due to the more effective thread engagement and reduced torque required to drive in (up to 30% less). There is a huge advantage in using CE-marked fixing products. Not only are Rapierstar StarTurn and StarFix screws available with all of the necessary accreditations and proof of meeting standards, you also have the reassurance of tested and approved fasteners forming the cornerstone of your construction project.
