A Good Time To Be Blue A LOCAL AUTISM-FRIENDLY HAPPENINGS SHINE A LIGHT ON THE SPECTRUM pril is one sensory-friendly month for children and adults affected by autism. Not only does April 2 mark annual World Autism Awareness Day, designated by the U.N. General Assembly and first observed in 2008, it also kicks off World Autism Month. In recognition, hundreds of thousands of landmarks, buildings, homes and communities around the world will go light blue, the sensory-friendly color. Throughout the month, special events and educational activities will promote understanding, acceptance and support of people on the spectrum. Miami-Dade is no exception. Among the autism-friendly happenings around the county are: AUTISM AWARENESS CONCERT, GREATER MIAMI YOUTH SYMPHONY. April 4, 7pm, Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 Red Rd., Pinecrest A live performance by the Youth Symphony’s Young Mozarts, Strings Orchestra, Concert Orchestra & Concert Chamber, including information to raise awareness

about autism. For information visit www.pinecrestgardens.org or www.gmys.org. SENSORY SATURDAY: CELEBRATING AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH. April 13, 9-11am, Miami Children’s Museum, 980 MacArthur Causeway This special event is designed for children with sensory-processing disorder and general development delay as well as their families. Lights and sounds will be dimmed to create a comfortable environment featuring sensory-based activities developed by an occupational therapist and designed to improve the ability to process and regulate sensory information. There will be Creative Movement and Mindfulness; a special interactive music performance, Singin’ With Susan; a sensory-friendly stage performance; and calming movement groups. Community professionals, such as occupational therapists, speech pathologists or ABA therapists, will be available. For information visit www.miamichildrensmuseum.org or call 305-373-5437, Ext. 126. FLIP FLOP FAMILY FUN FEST & EXPO FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES. April 14, 10am-3pm, Haulover Beach Park, 10800 Collins Ave., Miami

A ‘MADE IN DADE’ CELEBRATION It’s The Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth. That’s what the Miami Maker Faire calls itself, and it’s hard to debate that billing. Part science fair, part county fair and part something entirely new, the family-friendly festival is an all-ages showcase for “makers” to show what they’ve made and share what they’ve learned in making it. From 10am-5pm April 6-7, Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus will host the seventh incarnation of this celebration of the “Maker” movement, a gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students and commercial exhibitors. Following the original Maker Faire in the Bay Area in 2006, Miami-Dade got into the mix with its first Mini Faire in 2013. By 2017, over 190 independently produced Mini Maker Faires and over 30 larger-scale Maker Faires had taken place around the world. There is no fee for individuals or community groups to exhibit. Tickets for both days are $15; $7.50, ages 6-16; free, 5 and under. For either day, prices are $10 and $5, respectively. For more information, please visit www.miami.makerfaire.com. The campus is at 300 NE Second Ave.

WORRIED

SICK? HOW TO BREAK THE HABIT OF FRET TING OVER YOUR KIDS BY SHANNON DEAN

I

admit it. In my filing cabinet, hidden behind medical records, I have a folder on the AFM virus — an extremely rare polio-like illness — just in case. I have always been a worrier, but when I became a mother, my fretting reached crippling new heights. Suddenly, I panicked over perceived threats like terrorism, school shootings, abductions and rare childhood diseases. I know that I am not alone. A recent survey revealed that over half of polled mothers were “obsessed” with concerns about their children. No surprise there. When I share my unease with other moms, they give me a knowing, sympathetic nod. We’re all struggling under the weight of bearing responsibility for the children we love more than anything. At the same time, we suspect our anxiety is inching toward excessive levels. HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? A parent’s worry is instinctual and essential. We have a sixth sense about our kids’ well-being because it helps us to keep them safe. So we don’t want to silence our worries. But there is an important distinction between what’s constructive and what’s toxic. “When worry becomes toxic, it ceases to serve as the built-in alarm system nature meant it to be and instead becomes a painful problem,” says Dr. Edward Hallowell, author of Worry: Controlling It and Using It Wisely. Most experts agree that worry is destructive if it causes regular emotional distress or interferes with daily functioning. Fixating on “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios is a red flag. Such rumination can turn an innocent concern into something worse. For example, the worry “my child is struggling with his homework” could morph into “my child is not at grade level,” then move on to “he’ll never get into a decent college” and end up with “I’m not a good enough parent.” SHORT AND LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES Although many of us hope that a good dose of worry staves off disaster, the opposite is true. Misplaced worry can severely affect our health, our selfesteem, our productivity and our family’s well-being. Even worse, experts warn that chronic worriers can pass an anxious outlook to their kids. “How you live will influence how your children live,” explains Cindi McMenamin, author of 10 Secrets to Becoming a WorryFree Mom. “What you worry about, they will worry about, too.” A BREAKABLE CYCLE “It’s vital to understand that chronic worry is a habit, which with conscious effort can be broken,” says Dr. Beverly Potter, author of The Worry Wart’s Companion. Although breaking this cycle may take effort, the results are worth it. Women who learn the live now-worry later approach (used by many men) suffer much lower rates of depression than overthinking women.

Here are five tips that may help: Define The Real Issue: When concerns spiral out of control, identify what you’re truly worried about. Our darkest fears stem from scenarios that may never materialize. Rather than imagining vague, bleak outcomes, identify the specific concern at play. Once you define it, take action and move on. Regain Control: A perceived lack of control fuels worries. Instead of being paralyzed by fear, seek reliable information to determine if fears are rational. If they are, take manageable steps toward a solution. For example, address concerns about your child’s academic performance by finding one immediate action, like setting up an appointment with his teacher or guidance counselor. Reach Out: Avoid worrying alone. Share concerns with your spouse, a trusted friend or family member who can help with perspective. If no one is immediately available, ask yourself what your most trusted confidant would say. Find Productive Distractions: Lose yourself in comforting activities like scrap-booking, reading or a good movie. Exercise, yoga and meditation are also excellent options. Exercise relieves stress and releases endorphins that enhance physical and emotional well-being. Yoga reprograms your body to relax while meditation encourages your mind to follow. Surrender: Once you’ve identified, shared and addressed your worries, the last healthy step is to let go. Hand your concerns to the universe or a higher power. There are many ways to accomplish this. Suggestions are praying, meditating or watching journal pages burn. Trusting in wise, compassionate intervention releases the worries that no longer serve you. Changing the worry habit takes continuous effort and self-policing, but even small amounts of self-awareness yield noticeable results. Yesterday, not only did I allow my kids to play in the rain, but I joined them. Although I was tempted to worry about their health, my floors and our dinner, I allowed myself to enjoy the moment. My kids were thrilled and, in the end, all was well. I now realize that my compulsive worry was an attempt to prevent anything from ruining moments like this. How ironic that if I had worried a little less, I might have had them all along.

WORDS of wisdom

The Nearly Naked Truth THE REAL SKINNY ON SHOPPING FOR A SWIMSUIT IN A MOM BODY BY PAM MOLNAR I dread shopping for swimsuits. I know I am not alone when I say that. Normally, I am the kind of shopper who can find something quickly. Sales people love me because I don’t waffle back and forth when choosing new furniture. I picked out all the items for my remodeled kitchen in an afternoon. But swimwear? That takes forever. In fact, I probably spent less time looking for my wedding dress than I did looking for last year’s swimsuit. Like most women, I guess I fear being judged. Let’s be honest. We have all seen those women who clearly did not use the mirror in the dressing room. They are the highlight of people-watching on the beach. While it’s true that people may judge your choice of granite or living room sofa, it’s just not the same. You are not wearing your granite on your way-over-25-check-out-all-my-flaws-post-children body. There is something to be said for those bathing suits from the early 1900s. I normally shop for a swimsuit alone, but I wonder if it wouldn’t be better taking a friend for moral support. A friend would understand why you need to order margaritas at lunch and she would not remind you about them when you complained about your muffin top in the dressing room. No, I brave the dressing room sans friends (and margaritas). I wander around the swimwear department grabbing swimsuits that only look good on the hanger. I undress and try them on in a tiny room with bad lighting. While I criticize every wrinkle, stretch mark and pound, I make a silent promise to stop at the gym on the way home. After hitting three or four stores at the mall, I either give up and go home or settle on something that doesn’t look “too bad.” Online shopping is no better. Sure, you are in the comfort of your own home and you save yourself the embarrassment of running in and out of the dressing room looking for bigger sizes, but you open yourself up to another frustration: You have to guess how these suits will fit. The swimsuits look adorable on these tiny models with big boobs and flat stomachs but that wasn’t my body before I had children, let alone now.

The online stores offer size charts and body-type suggestions, but honestly, they are no help. The size charts are from size 2 to size 16. Wouldn’t it be nice if they could show the suit on models that fit in each size? That way, if you were a size 12, you would be able to see what your size-12 butt was going to look like in the suit versus the size-2 butt. But it’s not like that. You only see the suit on the picture of the Barbie Doll-shaped model and you have to guess. But that’s what I did this year. I searched online for what I thought looked nice and I hit the purchase button. The good news is that it is back-ordered until May, so I can put off the agony of trying it on until then.
