Fun Factory MUSEUM EXHIBIT BRINGS THE MANUFACTURING EXPERIENCE TO LIFE

M

ister Rogers may have moved on from his beloved neighborhood, but his legacy lives on in an exhibit that has moved in to Miami Children’s Museum and set up shop through the beginning of next year. “How People Make Things,” a hands-on exhibit inspired by factory tours from the “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” TV series, brings the manufacturing experience to life. Through Jan. 5, 2020, kids can learn firsthand about tools and processes used to make everyday objects like boxes or sneakers. The exhibit also explores the people, ideas and technology that transform raw materials into those finished products. As kids enter the exhibit, they can put on hard hats and vests before getting to work on activities like cutting with hand tools and die cuts, exploring different molding and vacuum tools, deforming pennies and wire, and pulling a lever to fill molds with fluid. They can also assemble a trolley similar to the one from the TV show created by Fred Rogers, who’s father and

grandfather worked in factories. Inspired by their work, Rogers would show videotaped visits to factories on his PBS show, which aired nationally for 33 years. Miami Children’s Museum is at 980 MacArthur Causeway. For more information, call 305-373-KIDS(5437) or visit www.miamichildrensmuseum.org

EVEN THE POPCORN’S FREE Looking for a fun way to beat the heat on a summertime Sunday afternoon? The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center’s got you covered with a film series that parents may like as much as the kids — the showings are free and, for the kids, so is the popcorn! As if that wasn’t enough, the Summer Family Film Series also comes with complimentary face-painting. The movies are pretty cool, too — all three are either Academy Award winners or nominees. All showings are at 11 a.m. Moana, July 14, Rated PG Kicking off the series is Disney’s sweeping CGI-animated story of a fearless teenager’s daring journey to save the people of her island. After an action-packed adventure

8

with enormous monsters and impossible odds, Moana fulfills her quest and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. Coco, Aug. 4, Rated PG The winner of Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, Coco follows young Miguel’s dreams of becoming an accomplished musician — despite his family’s generations-old ban on music. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the colorful Land of the Dead and embarks on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind his family history.

The Wizard of Oz, Sept. 8, Rated G Sure, it’s almost as much of a holiday tradition on TV as turkey is on the table, but on the big screen, this classic is a rare treat. In the digitally restored and remastered special edition of this 1939 Academy-Award winner, Dorothy is magically transported into the enchanted land of Oz via a tornado and then… well, you know. Seating for all shows is general admission. Reservations are required through Ticketmaster online at www.aventuracenter.org, by phone at 877-311-7469 or in person at the center box office, which is open Tuesday through Saturday noon-5pm and 90 minutes before each performance. Lap tickets are available at the box office on the day of the event for children 12 months and under. The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center is at 3385 NE 188 St.

Kickoff of the NFL’s centennial season is still more than a month away, but Miami is already gearing up for the Super Bowl. For the record-breaking 11th time, the city is playing host to the big game, and the Miami Super Bowl Host Committee has already been working for months toward its goal of recruiting 10,000 volunteers, who will serve as ambassadors throughout South Florida during the week leading up to Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2, 2020. However, the deadline for joining the celebration is fast approaching. Applications must be completed by Aug. 1. In-person interviews are being conducted during the summer followed by a mandatory orientation in the fall and a mandatory role-specific training session in January. Spearheaded by Miami Dolphins legend and longtime local resident Dan Marino, the volunteer program is seeking high-energy, enthusiastic volunteers who are passionate about football, love South Florida and can commit to at least three shifts of four to six hours during Super Bowl week (Jan. 25 - Feb. 2). Volunteers, who must be at least 18 years old and speak English, will be stationed at such locations as Downtown Miami, Miami Beach Convention Center, airports, hotels and fan events. They will receive a complimentary uniform kit, including a jacket, polo, backpack and hat. Plenty of positions are still available, according to Wyatt Kopelman, a marketing volunteer. “We’re looking for 10,000 volunteers,” he says. “So far, only about 2,000 have been selected.” To complete the application or for more information, visit www.miasbliv.com/volunteer

Summer Reading Challenge Want a chance to win an iPad Mini or a family four-pack of tickets to a Broadway show at the Adrienne Arsht Center? All you may have to do is read a book. It’s all part of the Miami-Dade Public Library’s 2019 Summer Reading Challenge, “A Universe of Stories,” which runs through Aug. 3. This is how it works: Read or listen to a book for 30 minutes, then complete and submit a reading log to receive a ticket to enter the drawing. Each ticket is another chance to win a prize at the end of the challenge. Other prizes include tickets to see the Miami Marlins and family memberships to HistoryMiami Museum and the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science. All ages can participate. Additional chances to win can be earned by attending a library program or by entering the #Read30 Social Media Challenge at www.thechildrenstrust.org/content/read30. And there are also free events and activities all summer — check the library calendar at www.calendar.mdpls.org/evanced/lib/eventcalendar.asp. For more information, call 305-375-BOOK. Register for the challenge and pick up the reading logs by visiting any library branch.

TOO MUCH INDEPENDENCE July 5 is one of the busiest days of the year at animal shelters. That’s because pets often panic from the noise from fireworks, bolt and get lost. Dogs, especially, can become upset enough to crash through windows, jump over fences, or break chains to escape. Here are some tips to keep your pets safe this Independence Day: • Don’t take dogs to places where there may be fireworks.

Miami Springs

• If you plan to be away from home on the holiday, bring your pet inside the house and leave the animal in a quiet, protected room. Animals left outside in the yard may not only attempt to escape, they may also fall prey to possible abuse by misguided individuals.

North Miami

• If you’re at home with a scared dog, don’t reinforce its behavior by offering sympathy. Instead, divert its attention by practicing an obedience routine or playing a game.

Keep cool in the pool this Fourth of July at this fun-filled Pool Party. $7/adult resident, $5/child resident; $12 adult non-resident, $7/child non-resident. Noon-5pm, Miami Springs Aquatic Center, 1401 Westward Dr., 305-805-5078 www.miamisprings-fl.gov

South Miami

Bring the family for activities, giveaways, a children’s zone and live entertainment followed by a fireworks display. 5-9pm, Palmer Park, 6100 SW 67 Ave., 305-668-3873 www.southmiamifl.gov

Every effort has been made to provide up-to-date information, however changes and cancellations do occur, especially due to weather. Please double check details before setting out for your celebration.

• Leave a scared cat alone. Don’t try to force a feline from its hiding place. The cat will come out when it feels safe. • Make sure your cat and/or dog is wearing a current Miami-Dade County animal license tag. County law requires all dogs over four months old to wear a license tag which provides identification and ensures a call home if your pet is lost. Tags are available for cats, but they are not required. Since cats are clever enough to take off their collars, a microchip is recommended instead of a tag.

FAMILY FUN

FAVORITE PARK OR PLAYGROUND

FAVORITE BEACH

Tropical Park

Crandon Park Beach For locals and tourists alike, this two-mile-long strip of sand is one of Miami’s most popular and breathtaking beaches. Located among Crandon Park’s 800 acres on the northern tip of Key Biscayne, the sand is soft, the water is calm and the parking is plentiful, with over 3,000 spots that only cost a few bucks a vehicle. There are also beach volleyball courts, concession stands and picnic areas with public grills. Whether you want to kick-back or kick up some sand, chairs, umbrellas and even cabanas are available to rent, as well as kayaks, paddleboards and single or quad bikes for exploring the island — where you’ll also find a nature center, golf course and tennis center. Spend a day here and it’s a good bet you’ll see why Crandon Park is consistently named among the nation’s top 10 beaches. The park is open seven days a week, year-round. 6747 Crandon Blvd., Key Biscayne, 305-365-2320 www.miamidade.gov/parks/crandon.asp

This is absolutely not your typical park. The former site of a horse track, its 275 acres hold just about anything an urban park should, and a lot more. For example, there’s the Ronald Reagan Equestrian Center, a full-service facility that hosts more than 36 shows a year, including three covered show arenas with seating for about 1,000. But that’s just the beginning. Think of any park amenity or activity, and Tropical Park probably has it: ball fields, a track and stadium, a fitness court, a community center, a 2-acre dog park, four lakes for paddle-boating and fishing, and miles of paved pathways for bicycling, walking or running. There’s even a boxing center and a year-round farmers market on Saturdays. And we haven’t even mentioned Santa’s Enchanted Forest, the annual event that transforms the park into a holiday wonderland with 6 million lights, a giant Christmas tree and carnival rides. The park is open every day from 7am-10:30pm. 7900 SW 40 St., Miami, 305-553-3161 www.miamidade.gov/parks/tropical.asp

FAVORITE PLACE TO SWIM & SPLASH

Oleta River State Park It’s hard to believe this natural oasis is only 30 minutes from downtown Miami. Because it’s shaped by the coast, the park is perfect for just about any beach or water activity and offers easy access to mangrove swamps, beaches and tidal marshes. Have a picnic on the beach or swim in the saltwater lagoon off Biscayne Bay, where the shallow water is just right for kids. (Lifeguards are not present on the beach, however.) With its namesake river running through it, the park is ideal for observing native vegetation and wildlife while paddling a kayak, canoe or board through lush mangrove forests or along the quiet waters of North Biscayne Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway. The Intracoastal and the pier are popular spots for fishing, too, for varieties from snook to snapper. At just over 1,000 acres, Florida’s largest urban park is also a haven for hikers and mountain bikers. The park is open 8am-sundown, 365 days a year. 3400 NE 163 St., North Miami Beach, 305-919-1844, www.floridastateparks.org/OletaRiver

FAVORITE FAMILY EVENT

FAVORITE LOCAL ADVENTURE

Miami Tours and Water Adventures

Miami-Dade County Fair For 68 years, the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair & Exposition — commonly known as The Youth Fair — has been the region’s annual mecca for family-friendly fun. Attracting nearly 600,000 guests of all ages over 21 days each spring, it is the largest fair in the state and one of the top fairs and expositions in North America. Visitors are not only treated to nearly 100 thrilling midway rides, fun games, concerts, shows and livestock/agricultural competitions — did we mention the outrageous carnival food? — but it is also a showcase for more than 63,000 local artistic, academic and agricultural student exhibits. Plus, the nonprofit Fair & Exposition partners with county schools and parks to provide programs that enrich the lives of kids and families throughout the year. The Fairgrounds at Tamiami Park, 10901 SW 24 St. (Coral Way), Miami, 305-223-7060 www.thefair.me

There’s so much happening on the water off Miami and the beaches, and this is the place that makes a whole lot of it happen. You say you want to go snorkeling or parasailing? How about jet-skiing or jetpacking? Paddleboarding or kayaking? Or maybe a luxurious sunset cruise on an 80-foot Catamaran? Here, there are 10 water adventures to choose from, ranging from $30-$600. Boats and yachts for rent go from a $220 water sports boat to the 72 Mangusta yacht, at $3,299. And landlubbers even get to share the fun with the Exotic Car Adventure Tour. For $599, drivers can take five exotic cars through the best roads of Miami and the Florida Keys for five hours. Several Miami Beach locations, 305-772-9942 www.miamitoursandwateradventures.com

FAVORITE SOUTH FLORIDA FAMILY RESORT

Fontainebleau Miami Beach A landmark of luxury and style for 65 years, the 22-acre oceanfront Miami Beach hotel is a playground for grownups and kids alike. Designed with young ones in mind, the Fontainebleau poolscape features a family pool and several shallow pools. Parents can set up camp at a cabana at the children’s pool and keep a close eye on the kids splashing around and playing on the waterslide. Plus there are complimentary dive-in movies for the family during summer. For indoor fun, the Family Pastry Class & Tour offers hands-on dessert-making side-by-side with resort pastry chefs. For Mom and Dad chill time, there’s the FB Kids program for ages 4-12, where certified Adventure Guides lead the kids in games, scavenger hunts, sport skills, art, drama and other good uses for their energy. Parents can register for full- or half-days. And on Fridays and Saturdays, Kids’ Night Out invites children to watch movies and play games. Daytime babysitting services for younger children are also available. Local residents can partake of the Fountainbleu experience — and take advantage of the FB Kids program — by renting a cabana or making a spa reservation. 4441 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, 866-629-2573 www.fontainebleau.com

FAMILY FUN FAVORITE SOUTH FLORIDA ATTRACTION

Zoo Miami A trip to Zoo Miami is in some ways like a visit to another continent. South Florida’s unique climate enables the only subtropical zoo in the continental United States to keep a wide variety of animals from Asia, Australia, Africa and the Americas. Animals that live together peacefully in the wild are grouped according to their geographic homelands in lush, open-air exhibits whose trees, foliage and soil are matched as closely as possible to the native habitats. So, while the animals are made to feel at home here, zoo visitors get to see a little bit of where the animals came from, too — at a safe, yet very close range. From aardvarks to zebras, and a wide variety of amphibians, reptiles and birds, its broad mix of species is unlike any other zoo in the country — with over 3,000 animals representing more than 500 species, over 40 of which are endangered. Plus for the kids there are rides and special activities like the Animal Fun Factory, a one-of-a-kind interactive play exhibit. You can even get ZooDoo for composting! 12400 SW 152 St., Miami, 305-251-0400 www.zoomiami.org

TH OR

Besides being a gorgeous 83-acre showcase for the natural wonders of plants and flowers, it’s a museum, laboratory, learning center and conservation research facility with 45,000 members and more than 1,200 volunteers. It’s also the home of TH T R E the American Orchid Society. And it’s a place where nature appreciation and family fun go together, such as at its Wings of the Tropics exhibit, where about 40 different species of exotic butterflies at a time will flitter about (and light upon) you as you meander along the paths of its Clinton Family Conservatory. 10901 Old Cutler Rd., Coral Gables, 305-667-1651 www.fairchildgarden.org IP

FAVORITE SOUTH FLORIDA MUSUEM

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Having been built almost 100 years ago, Vizcaya is almost ancient for South Florida. Still, a visit there is a lot like time-traveling back four centuries further and landing in the Old Country. Conceived as a modern, subtropical interpretation of an 18th century Italian villa by magnate James Deering, this living museum on Biscayne Bay features 34 decorated rooms of European antiquities and American art on 10 acres of Italian Renaissance gardens. Last year, Vizcaya introduced touch-screen interactive experiences that enable visitors to explore such normally inaccessible areas as the Barge, a partly submerged breakwater decorated with mythical sculptures, and the Pool Grotto, with its elaborate ceiling mural. 3251 S. Frost’s four buildings in Downtown Miami’s waterfront Museum Park let you explore the world of science from outer space to ocean depths. In the cutting-edge, 250-seat Frost Planetarium with its 360-degree view, you can take immersive, visual joyrides through to the stars, of course, but also into a coral reef or a strand of DNA. And on Laser Fridays, the planetarium fuses pop music with laser light visuals under its 67-foot dome. The tri-level Aquarium lets you travel from surface habitats of the Gulf Stream and the Everglades down deeper to stunning underwater views and interactive learning stations. There is a spectrum of other programs, events, camps and exhibits, including: Feathers to the Stars, the story of flight from feathered dinosaurs to future space travel; The River of Grass, designed specifically to introduce young children to our precious ’Glades ecosystem; and the recently opened Secret World Inside You, which explores the vast community of bacteria, viruses and other microbes that call our bodies home. 1101 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, 305-434-9600 www.frostscience.org TH

Starting with murals, street art and graffiti that were embraced early on by developers, the neighborhood now has more than 70 galleries and museums featuring well-known artists and up-and-comers. Its Second Saturday Art Walks gave birth to a street life that has become lively all week long, with dozens of new dining and entertainment spots and hundreds of businesses enhancing the district’s innovative, evolving vibrancy. There’s still no better time to check out Wynwood, though, than on the second Saturday of every month starting at 6pm as the iconic Art Walk turns the neighborhood into Miami’s largest block party. Wynwood is located roughly between N. 36 and 20 Streets, and I-95 and NE First Avenue, www.wynwoodmiami.com

IHOP The place for breakfast anytime is also the place kids eat free — sometimes. Kids 12 and under get dinner on the house with the purchase of one adult entree every night of the week, from 4-10 p.m. The only catch is that the limited promotion comes and goes for a limited time at different times of the year, so you’ve got to stay on your toes if you want to find the participating locations. You can do that by checking the IHOP Facebook page for the latest news or by visiting the pancake palace’s website to join MyHop, which not only keeps you updated on promotions but also entitles you to free flapjacks just for signing up — as well as on your birthday and every anniversary of the date you joined. Of course, the kids menu is extensive, with anything from the staple Grilled Cheese Sandwich to the whimsical Funny Face or Create-A-Face pancakes. Multiple locations. www.ihop.com

FAVORITE PLACE FOR FROZEN TREATS

Azucar Ice Cream Company Located in the heart of Little Havana, Azucar Ice Cream Company is an artisanal ice cream and sorbet boutique flavored by South Florida’s diverse cultures and inspired by owner Suzy Battle’s Cuban grandmother. Her “abuela” was determined to make ice cream out of every tropical fruit that she found along her travels, and Battle blends those recipes with techniques learned at Penn State’s Ice Cream University and the Frozen Dessert Institute of St. Louis. Azucar uses high-quality, all natural ingredients that are as local as the fruit stand down the street, as well as seasonal fruits and vegetables from South Florida farmer’s markets and Redland growers. Look for the giant ice-cream cone above the entrance for a tropical paradise of flavors like flan, plátano maduro, passionfruit and the trademarked Abuela Maria, classic vanilla ice cream with guava, chunks of cream cheese and Maria cookies. 1503 SW Eighth St., Miami, 305-381-0369 www.azucaricecream.com

Benihana It’s the show that makes dining distinctive at America’s first Japanese teppanyaki restaurant, where highly trained chefs chop and cook your meal with intricate knife work and theatrics on table-side teppanyaki grills (they are the flat-surface, steel grills often confused with hibachi barbecue grills). Their most famous trick — the onion volcano — is complemented by an Asian-style cuisine of steaks, seafood and sushi. And, of course, lots of rice. For the 12-and-under set, there is a Kabuki Kids program that celebrates members’ birthdays with a free souvenir mug with the order of a Kabuki Kids meal. Of the 70 Benihana restaurants in the Americas and the Caribbean, there are three locations in Miami-Dade — Coral Gables, Miami and Miami Beach. www.benihana.com

We all know that the South in South Florida doesn’t really translate to Southern. There’s always an exception, though, and in Miami-Dade it’s at this oasis of classic Southern cooking, culture, hospitality and farm-fresh, from-scratch tradition. Yardbird serves up the classics like fried chicken, short ribs and shrimp ’n’ grits, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some inventive takes on regional Southern fare, such as three different biscuit appetizers and Chicken ‘n’ Watermelon ‘n’ Waffles, featuring honey hot sauce and bourbon maple syrup on a chilled, spiced watermelon, cheddar cheese waffle. Open seven days, including Sunday brunch, Yardbird is found in only three other cities: Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Singapore. 1600 Lenox Ave., Miami Beach, 305-538-5220 www.runchickenrun.com/miami TH

EATS & TREATS FAVORITE BURGER JOINT

Kush

A culinary accompaniment to the creative spirit of its Wynwood neighborhood, this funky gastropub serves up a menu of quality craft beers, visionary artworks and food sourced from Florida farms. For example, the fresh gator meat in its Florida Alligator Bites starter comes from Cypress Creek Farms in Starke, and the beef for its burgers is delivered weekly from Fort McCoy Ranch in Marion County. It’s ground in-house by hand, and everything else is made from scratch every day – right down to the ketchup and key lime pie. Just reading the imaginative burger menu will make a beef-lover’s mouth water. For one, there’s the award-winning Johnny Utah, topped with hot pastrami, among other fixings. For another, there’s the Frita Burger, stuffed with potato stix, crispy bacon, guava jelly and melted Gruyere, then pressed on a flat top grill. There are six more burgers, including The Classic for less adventurous palates — as well as sandwich, salad, vegan and gluten-free options. 2003 N. When it comes to burgers, our readers appear to be right on the money. Five Guys was selected as burger restaurant Brand of the Year in last year’s Harris Poll. And on National Burger Day this past May 28, it was named the top spot to grab a burger in a survey of 1,200 consumers by Offers.com. At 28 percent, Five Guys came close to doubling the next closest competitor’s score. Thirty years after the Murrell Family opened its first carry-out burger joint in Virginia, there are now almost 1,500 locations worldwide and another 1,500 more in the works. Three reasons for the success would no doubt be: Only fresh ground beef and peanut oil are used — and freezers are not. Perhaps another reason is that though there are a few hot dog and sandwich items on its menu, Five Guys pretty much sticks to what it does best — eight burger offerings and two varieties of fries. Only want a couple of slices? Be aware that they are so big that one might do. Amazon ownership has brought some changes to Whole Foods — such as its Echo smart devices for sale, recently lowered prices on produce, and special discounts and free delivery for Prime members. But what hasn’t changed is it’s still the world’s leader in natural and organic foods, with almost 500 stores in the United States and the United Kingdom. Whole Foods Market only sells products that meet its own quality standards for being “natural,” which it defines as minimally processed foods free of hydrogenated fats and artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners and preservatives. The store also does not intend to sell meat or milk from cloned animals or their offspring. And its bounty of prepared-food offerings — eclectic salad and hot bars, sandwiches, pizzas and casseroles — are a special bonus for health-conscious shoppers. IKEA’s got you covered for just about any furniture and furnishings for kids, from the day you bring them home until they’re almost all grown up. Perhaps it’s not surprising that the Scandinavian chain is a go-to retailer for kids furniture — it was founded by a kid of only 17 years of age. (Fun fact: IKEA is an acronym for its founder’s name, Ingvar Kamprad; Elmtaryd, his farm’s name; and the nearby village of Agunnaryd.) Of course, IKEA has come a long, long way since its 1943 beginnings in rural Sweden and its early days as a catalog service. Today, with its “for-the-people” concept and 422 stores in more than 50 markets, IKEA is virtually synonymous with the word “furniture.” Plus, IKEA is extra family-friendly. Most stores feature family parking spots, a baby-care area, baby food, microwaves, shopping strollers and a free supervised play area for youngsters between 4 and 10 years old. Called Småland, it features a Swedish forest atmosphere — of course. And for kids 3-12 years old, IKEA Miami Kids’ Club offers family-friendly crafting workshops each month. 1801 NW 117 Ave., Miami, 888-888-4532 www.ikea.com T OR H

Resonating with the legacy of Miami’s Cuban-exile community, this family business has grown from the christening of its first store on Calle Ocho in Little Havana to the largest Hispanic-owned furniture retail enterprise in the country. Today, Capó’s sons and grandchildren still run the business, where shopping is like taking a stroll down old-fashioned city streets. With facades ranging from 16th Centuryinspired stained glass windows to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, El Dorado’s innovative Boulevard Showrooms feature over 20 themed storefronts that open into specialized showcases of the latest furniture styles — including a full range of furniture for the kids’ rooms. FAVORITE KIDS FUN AT A SHOPPING DESTINATION

Aventura Mall Kids Play Area The first artwork installed as part of Aventura Mall’s art program was … a playground. A safe, toddler-sized playspace, the Rainbow Valley Playground is South Florida’s first indoor children’s playground designed by contemporary artists — Miami’s Sam Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III, of Friends With You. Inspired by a story created by those artists, Rainbow Valley lets children play in a sea of vibrant rainbows, clouds, small mountains and water, as they discover Peekoo, the baby mountain, and his adventures with his new friend, Cloudy. Only children under 42 inches are permitted in the playground, and they must be monitored by an adult. Children and adults must wear cotton socks at all times. The playground’s new location is on the Lower Level in front of JCPenney. 19501 Biscayne Blvd., 305-935-1110 www.aventuramall.com

RETAIL THERAPY FAVORITE STORE FOR KIDS’ STUFF

Barnes & Noble More than a bookstore, this is a place with kids at heart. Beyond the vast volumes for children and young adults on its shelves and online, it also features a huge selection of toys and games for all ages — from preschool toys and Legos to Disney and Funko Pop! collectibles to puzzles and strategy games. But the fun doesn’t stop there. The seasonal Kids’ Book Hangout invites children ages 6-12 to discover and talk about books, play games and activities and enjoy giveaways and discounts on featured books. Then there’s the Summer Reading Program, in which kids in grades 1-6 can earn a free book when they read eight books. Also, local stores hold weekly events — such as the Baby & Me Storytime for children up to 24 months and their caregivers at the West Kendall location; the new summer YA Book Club at the Coral Gables store (www.bn.com/yabookclub); and the Sunset location’s Game On! event for game-loving young readers. www.barnesandnoble.com

PETS FAVORITE VETERINARIAN/HOSPITAL

Miami Animal Hospital It’d be quite a trick for your pet to come up with a veterinary need that couldn’t be met by this state-of-the-art facility — from internal medicine to microchipping, dental care to digital radiology, laser surgery to spaying, and, of course, bathing and grooming. Plus, there’s a complete lab on premises at Miami Animal Hospital — not a given at every clinic — which speeds up test results. And its in-house intensive care unit provides special attention that minimizes recovery time. Each of its veterinarians have over 20 years experience in veterinary medicine and animal care and are members of the American and South Florida veterinary medical associations. Emergency service is 24/7 — and even house calls are available by appointment. 4701 W. Flagler St., Miami, 305-443-4777 www.miamianimalhospital.com

FAVORITE DOG PARK FAVORITE BOARDING FACILITY

Barks and Tales Dog Spa Owner Daniela Carrasco was far from a dog whisperer before she started working at a grooming salon in 2005. Professionally speaking, though, she soon realized that she was barking up the right tree. Four years later she opened Barks and Tales, which has been offering high-quality boarding and daycare services to Miami’s dog parents for 10 years. There, dogs enjoy the “suite life” in a cozy suite complete with their own bed, food and any other items from home that will make their stay more comfortable. (Of course, Barks and Tales will provide food, if you prefer.) At $25 a day per dog, daycare guests are given a midday nap and feeding time and one to two walks a day, weather-permitting. Full grooming and non-anesthetic dental cleaning are also available. 2037 NW First Place, Miami, 305-571-1818 www.barksandtales.com

Haulover Beach Dog Park There are few places that’ll get your dog’s tail wagging as wildly as the beach will. And Haulover Beach Dog Park sees more than its share of wagging tails at its bark beach, where dogs are allowed off-leash from 8am-3pm (between lifeguard towers 2 and 3). Haulover also has two other dog parks, one each for pooches who weigh less or more than 35 pounds. Both small- and large-dog parks feature enclosed areas for leashless romps, as well as shade trees, picnic tables, benches, drinking fountains and waste bags and containers. The park is open from 8am to sunset, seven days a week, and is accessible through parking lots 3 and 4. There’s a $5-$7 parking entry fee per vehicle. 10800 Collins Ave., Miami, 305-947-3525 www.miamidade.gov/parks/haulover.asp

PETS FAVORITE GROOMER

For over 10 years, Miami pet owners have been choosing Bubbles for a wide range of grooming services, including dog-bathing, nail-clipping, ear-cleaning, teeth-cleaning, tick dips and more. Bubbles’ experienced groomers are trained in caring for all sizes and breeds of dogs with a personalized service and attention to detail that sets them apart from the national chains. There is also a large selection of toys, high-quality pet foods, collars and clothing accessories. Boarding services are available, too. 5801 Bird St., Miami, 786-310-1953 www.groomingmiami.net

WORDS of wisdom

An Apology to Alexa WITH THREE KIDS, IT’S MAYBE NOT THE IDEAL HOME FOR AN ANSWER-BOT BY MALIA JACOBSON

A

lexa, let me start. I know you never wanted this. We appreciate you — there’s no question. Your un-boxing was a momentous day in our house. A robotic personal assistant with an unfailingly calm, melodious voice ever-ready to brief us on the day’s weather, keep track of my shopping list. And never, under any circumstances, issue gale-force sighs and pre-teen-style theatrical moans when faced with a simple request — you were a revelation. Pseudo-adult companionship? I’ll take it. The kids were beside themselves, too. They’d long been impressed by the several friends whose homes sported not one, but sometimes two or more of you. “Sophie has four Alexas, and we don’t even have one,” they’d said, always on high alert for even the slightest material injustice. After a few weeks of their heavy hints that you’d make us smarter, tidier and more fun, explaining Common Core long division and turning post-dinner cleanup into a dance party, I caved. But our home isn’t one you were designed to withstand. A sleek cylinder teeming with promise, you were meant to rest on a spotless marble slab next to a well-loved espresso machine or, at the very least, a Soda Stream. In this orderly world, you’d parse out the day’s headlines, intone the latest audio books and reign supreme over a thoughtfully designed smart home, orchestrating LED light bulbs and whisper-quiet ceiling fans and keeping the Prosecco chilled. Don’t feel bad, Alexa. I want to live there, too. Instead, you landed here, on a scuffed-up butcher block counter amid sippy-top lids and lunchboxes and half-eaten apples. Let’s be honest, lady — you weren’t prepared to field commands from a trio of shrieking counter-height humans from the moment your soothing blue light switched on. Is it possible to startle a robot? I think we did. Let’s give them credit: What the questions lack in subtlety or finesse, they make up for in sheer volume. “Play Katy Perry! No, not that song; the OTHER ONE! Tell us a joke, Alexa! When is it Christmas and why is it not Friday? And what’s Brexit? And say ‘poop!’ Say it AGAIN!” It’s always about poop, Alexa.

| miamidadefamilylife.com

Can I offer you some advice? Boundaries. You’re a receptacle for demands, and children are by nature demanding. You’ll never bark: “MOM NEEDS A BREAK, I’M LOCKING THE BATHROOM” — and they sense that. Your endless well of good-natured compliance inspires an outpouring of absurd requests to which there is no end. Trust me on this one. You’re an answer-bot, and they want answers. So limits must be set. In a way, you’ve replaced me, but I don’t resent you. My jokes are lackluster at best and I never say “poop” as much or as emphatically as they’d like because there are only so many hours in the day. I’m human (not to brag) so I tire after a half-dozen rapid-fire queries with replies that rarely satisfy. That’s where you shine. Like a tireless, electronic Mom, you always supply answers, homework help and pleasant small talk. Alexa, I think we make a great team — I make dinner and you stand ready to order pizza if it all goes south. In time, the kids will learn that you’re more than just another female to order around. I’m pretty sure, anyway. Malia Jacobson is a nationally published health journalist. When she’s not writing, she’s chasing her three children… and now, trying to make Alexa feel at home.
