In this issue, we are very happy to share with all of you the story of Suki Lopez, who plays the role of Nina on the Sesame Street program. Who didn’t watch that show as a kid? So many great memories of Elmo teaching us how to brush our teeth, Big Bird always cute and helping his friends, Cookie Monster eating all the cookies that we wanted to eat… Thinking of Sesame Street also reminded me of when my son only wanted to eat if he could listen to “Elmo’s Song” or my daughter in love with Abbi and her magic tricks. Suki is Nina, the Latina character in the show, who is proud to be a Cuban-American. All the neighborhood admires her for her bi-lingual ability and because she also helps everyone when something is broke because she owns a bike shop. Don’t miss the interview with this wonderful lady on page 20! Now that it is time to go back to the classrooms, schools require that you bring to them your kids vaccinations form in order to attend classes. We think that it is extremely important to get vaccinated to protect your child from contagious diseases. Please read the full article about the importance of vaccinations on page 15. Thinking about what your kids are going to do after school is out? Don’t’ worry, we have an After-School Activity Guide sponsored by Zaniac on page 22. Also, if you are thinking about when you should start touring schools and learning about the admission process, don’t miss the Schools Guide sponsored by Supercuts on page 30. We hope to see you all at our Back to School event August 10th at Sunset Place Mall! We can’t wait to celebrate together going back to school!

Use this helpful guide to assist you to be best prepared for the coming new school year. Miami Dade Public Schools begin on August 19th and Broward Public Schools start on August 14th. The entire year calendar is available online. You can print a hard copy for a quick reference and also upload to your phone. Six Weeks Before • Brain drain takes place over the summer. Insure your child is reading on a regular basis. • M a k e a l l n e c e s s a r y m e d i c a l appointments with your Dentist, Physician, Eye Doctor, etc. early, as closer to school starting, they are booked full by the many parents that have put it off until the last minute. • Purchase all of the needed uniforms. Depending on your budget, having a full week of uniforms avoids having to do laundry during the week. Four Weeks Before • Organize alternative transportation when you aren’t able to arrive at pickup on time. Create a schedule if you are fortunate to have a car pool. • Shop early for school supplies, backpacks, shoes, sports equipment. The free sales tax week is great, but the stores are jammed with the bargain hunters. • Organize all clothing for each week. I suggest a plastic bin marked for each day of the week that to have everything on hand, speeding up the morning rush to get ready.
Two Weeks Before • Visit the school to be familiar with the layout, drop off & pick up areas. • Ask (and write down so you don’t forget) the names of the front office staff. Many times they are the ones that call you when there is a problem, illness or accident and also the ones that keep an eye on your child until you arrive. • If there is a school nurse, set up a brief meeting if your child has allergies or takes medication. (make note of their name also). • Find out if the school has an after-school program that has homework assistance or sports. There might be limited space, so sign up early. • Make an appointment for a haircut (it will allow time to grow out a little if needed). • Get back on an earlier sleeping schedule. • Set up a homework station with needed supplies. One Week Before • Take your child to shop for groceries that will be packed in their lunch box. • Have a discussion on eating healthy, drinking enough water, and single-use plastic you are eliminating. • If your child is to be alone after school, make sure you have a clear understanding about house rules such as visitors, cooking, locking doors, etc.
One Day Before • Remind them how special they are and how proud you are of them. • If you are off to work after you drop them off, organize your own clothes, have your to-go coffee cup ready to be filled. First Day • Take a picture. They may groan, but it records the important day. • Give the teacher a note with your child’s name, your name, your cell phone number and email. Ask how they prefer to communicate. • Schedule to attend the “Back to School Night”. • Support the teacher by offering to volunteer if possible. Get involved and join the PTA! Children in schools with good parental involvement always do better! Mark the dates for Teacher Appreciation Week on May 7 -11. Your child’s teacher plays a critical role in their lives. If you acknowledge the teachers, coaches, office staff, custodians, they will be happy that you recognize their positive impact they have on your child.
With a little thought and preparation, you all can have a wonderful school year!

Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Alumni Hall of Fame This year at the annual For The Love of Learning gala that benefited the Foundation for New Education Initiatives, tributes were made to the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Alumni Hall of Fame Class of 2018-2019. Honorees included Emilio Estefan, Music Producer and Entrepreneur, Alan Fein, Lawyer and Philanthropist, and Ana VeigaMilton, Lawyer and Philanthropist. They are great role models for our children that studying in public schools can lead to a successful future. Miami Senior High School alumnus Emilio Estefan has achieved international acclaim. The 19-time Grammy Award winner has produced some of the biggest and brightest stars in the music industry, including his wife Gloria Estefan, Shakira, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Jon Secada, Carlos Vives, Jennifer López, and many others. He is also a filmmaker, an author, a restaurateur, hotel owner and a share-holder in the Miami Dolphins. Emilio’s main objective is to shatter stereotypes that have been with the Latin community for decades in entertainment. Through the Gloria Estefan Foundation, the Estefan’s have also given back philanthropically to Miami by supporting numerous causes in the areas of health, education, and Latino-focused organizations.
Emilio Estefan Of all of Ana VeigaMilton’s impressive accomplishments, she says taking care of her family and carrying on the Milton family legacy of philanthropy are at the top. Ana VeigaMilton presides over the José Milton Foundation and guides Social Responsibility for the Milton family business. She is a powerhouse in the philanthropic community, providing millions of dollars in donations to hospitals, mentoring organizations. Ana is a proud graduate of Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS). She attended Banyan Elementary, Rockway Junior High, and Southwest Miami High School. She served as Student Council President, VP of Key Club Service Organization, and graduated Valedictorian, earning a full merit Isaac Bashevis Singer Scholarship to The University of Miami. She has given back to public schools, including the creation of a state-of-the-art recording studio at Miami Arts Studio 6-12 @ Zelda Glazer. As an attorney and engineer, Ana has a strong passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education and supports its initiatives for M-DCPS students.
Ana VeigaMilton
The four-decades of work led by Alan Fein has made an immeasurable mark on South Florida, in the areas of sports, arts and culture, education, and civic engagement. Alan grew up in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. He attended Coral Park Elementary, Rockway Junior High, and graduated from Miami Coral Park Senior High in 1972. Alan’s education at Coral Park prepared him to attend the Wharton School of Business at University of Pennsylvania and law school at Georgetown University. Alan returned to South Florida in the 1980s where he started a law practice and has since lived his passion for transforming Miami into a world-class city. He served on the committee that landed the first NBA franchise in South Florida, the Miami Heat; he was instrumental in the creation of the City Theater, the Colony Theater, and the Adrienne Arsht Center; and he assisted in the establishment of the Village of Key Biscayne.

I
don’t know any parent that does not suffer from severe anxiety when it comes to packing their kid’s lunch. Not only do we suffer stress over what kids will actually eat, but we are severely restricted in many schools on what we can send with them thanks to allergies. And, perhaps worst of all, are the looks that we feel we are getting from other parents … you know the “oh, I cannot BELIEVE they let their child eat THAT” look?
Well, let’s break it down, folks. First off, we all want our kids to be as healthy as possible. In order to be healthy, though, kids have to eat. And, we all know that what kids eagerly want to eat in the morning could well end up on the “barf bag” list by 10 AM lunchtime because their tastes change that fast! So, let’s consider some basics: • Young kids’ stomachs are small, so sending enormous amounts of food may overwhelm them. • Variety is the spice of life and this goes for your child’s lunch box, too. Sending a selection of small tastes of different foods is a great way to give them a little control over what they have for lunch. • Packaged foods may be convenient, but even “healthy” packaged foods are still likely to contain huge amounts of added sugars, chemicals and preservatives, and artificial colors. A child (under 18) can only safely metabolize about 20 grams of added sugar in one day – and adults only a few grams more. Most kids will have more added sugar than this in one drink! It doesn’t matter if that sugar is “natural”, “organic”, “minimally processed” or any of the other marketing buzz words – our bodies were not meant to process sweeteners added to food. It’s best to stick with fresh, natural foods whenever possible. • Unfortunately, schools have not figured out that for maximum health and good behavior, kids need to eat throughout their day, not just a mid-morning lunch followed by a long day of classes and no breaks. If your child is young, ask your teacher or school if they can permit snacks such as fruits or small veggies as a quick snack in between a subject or two. Sending cut apples, a peeled orange, carrot shreds, or cooked sweet potato wedges sprinkled with cinnamon can help a child replenish their energy without added sugars and without a big mess or disturbance for the teacher. If you have teens that switch classes, provide similar type snacks in an outside

STAND UP for SITTING DOWN to DINNER Did you know if you eat dinner together as a family four times a week that your kids are 50% less likely to use drugs and engage in other risky behaviors?
By Informed Families
Many people think they don’t have time to eat dinner with their children – well just imagine how much time you will spend sorting out your child’s problem behaviors? And guess what, some behaviors become chronic and don’t get sorted out so you will be living with them for a life time. Eating dinner together provides an opportunity for family members to come together, strengthen ties and build better relationships. Family Day – A Day To Eat Dinner With Your Children® is a national campaign, developed by the Center for Addiction & Substance Abuse at Columbia University, to promote frequent family dinners to prevent risky behavior in kids. However, the campaign also recognizes the value of spending any quality time with your children. On September 23rd, join millions of families across the U.S. to Stand Up for Sitting down to dinner. Enjoy a meal together with your family and talk to each other, electronics-free. “Eating dinner together sounds so simple and yet, it is not today’s norm. Why? The answer has something to do with hectic schedules, after school activities and other outside influences that interfere with dinnertime, said Peggy B. Sapp, President of Informed Families/Florida Family Partnership. “This reality is most unfortunate because research has shown that the more children eat dinner
with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use illegal drugs. They are also less likely to try drugs in the future.” Visit www.flfamilyday. com to get great ideas for fun activities and easy recipes to make your Family Day celebration the start of a great new family tradition. Plan to eat dinner as a family on Family Day. If you already have family dinners together, great! Keep up the good work. If not, you can start now and Stand Up for Sitting Down to Dinner! National Family Day is on the fourth Monday of September. It’s a great opportunity for families to eat dinner together. Parental engagement is the single most potent weapon in preventing substance abuse among youth. Family Day emphasizes regular family activities to encourage parentchild communication.
Contest Call Out: Want to win a $100 Publix Gift Card? Take a photo of your family eating dinner together and share it on social media. Post it on the Informed Families or Miami Kids Magazine’s Facebook page or send it in a message. You can also post it on Instagram using thehashtag #FLFamilyDay. Three winners will be randomly selected to receive a $100 Publix Gift Card.

I made it home to celebrate with my sister. AS A FAMILY MAGAZINE, WE BELIEVE IN INCLUSION AND A UNITED COMMUNITY. HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL TO WORK WITH SUCH A GREAT ORGANIZATION AS SESAME WORKSHOP THAT IS ALWAYS THINKING ABOUT AN INTEGRATED COMMUNITY? My heart feels like it could burst. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude knowing that I get to be a part of teaching, what I believe is, some of the most important lessons in life: kindness, empathy, respect, inclusivity, creativity, and curiosity. All of this coming from a cast of diverse characters representing different races, cultures, and abilities in a way that makes everyone feel seen and heard. Its art and entertainment with a powerful purpose.
SUKI, TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPBRINGING AND FORMATIVE YEARS. I grew up in Miami and was blessed with an amazing family who always supported and fueled my love for dance, music, and art. I trained as a dancer with my Mom at MVSA since I was three. I fell in LOVE with musicals when my grandmother introduced me to ‘The Sound of Music’ and my Dad always made it a point to take us to Broadway shows whenever we visited New York. I remember watching Hairspray and desperately wanting to jump up on stage. It got me thinking, “wait a second, I can do that.” I continued dancing, started taking voice lessons and participating in school musicals. My college application process was a total shot in the dark though. I didn’t know where to turn for guidance. What schools had the best programs? What should I prepare for my auditions? What should I look like in my headshot? These are the questions that have fueled my new mission: College Prep for the Performing Arts. I’ve started Miami Arts Prep at MVSA, to nuture creativity, cultivate confidence and prepare students for a future in the Creative World. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN TV AND ON SESAME STREET? I had no idea I’d end up on TV. I was trained as a stage performer. After finishing out a National tour with West Side Story I went back to New York to finish up my degree and worked a bunch of odd jobs before I got to audition. The final callback was the day of my sister’s rehearsal dinner in Miami, perfect timing right? I had decided not to audition but my Mom convinced me I could make it. I changed my flight and showed up to the audition with a carry-on. It ended up being a total blast. I sang and improvised with my new muppet friend feeling like a 7 year old Suki AND
TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE AS A LATINA ON THE SHOW. I play Nina, a Cuban-American, bilingual millennial who owns the Bike Shop on Sesame Street. She’s working towards her Masters in Engineering so it’s fitting that she’s sort of become the Ms. fix it of the neighborhood. The best thing about Nina is that she’s given me so many opportunities to share my culture through music, food and dance. I’m incredibly proud to be able to represent my Latin culture on the show. THIS YEAR IS A VERY IMPORTANT YEAR FOR SESAME STREET, REACHING A 50-YEAR MILESTONE OF BRINGING HAPPINESS TO MANY KIDS. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED DURING YOUR YEARS ON THE SHOW? Sesame Street does massive amounts of research before each season to choose curriculum for the show. It was thrilling to be able to sit in on presentations by educational scientists and learn about the biggest obstacles for kids each year. For example, most recently, the research has shown that kids are increasingly hesitant to try new things because they’re afraid to fail, but how will they learn and grow if they’re afraid to make mistakes? In Season 50 Sesame Street will focus on the power of possibilities and encourage kids to take safe risks and learn from their mistakes. WHICH CHARACTER DO YOU IDENTIFY THE MOST WITH? I’m probably most like Abby - full of energy, kind of quirky and warm-hearted. Although, If it’s been a rough day, I’m a total Oscar and if I’m Hungry, I can scarf down a meal faster than Cookie Monster takes down a chocolate chippy. PLEASE, LEAVE US A MESSAGE FOR OUR LITTLE ONES THAT ARE READY TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL. Every year is an adventure full of new friends and discoveries! I hope you’re excited for what this year has in store for you. If someone hasn’t told you yet, don’t forget to play. It’s important business. Explore your backyard, build a fort, experiment with your slime and above all don’t be afraid to try. Sometimes we think we can’t. But what if we TRY and find we CAN?

Building a Culture of Inclusion in STEAM By Neydy Gomez
oday, most Americans are aware of the importance of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) education. It’s widely accepted that for our economy to remain competitive we must solve the shortage of qualified workers in STEAM fields. As technological integration into economies accelerates at a breakneck pace, the education resources available to young learners has remained frustratingly stagnant. Few students are equipped with the experience, and most importantly, the confidence to complete a college major in a STEAM field. Academic success, and eventual professional success, is built on an early educational foundation. For technical skillsets related to computer science and math, a child’s confidence is made or broken by middle school. Life-long opinions on their ability to excel in technical fields are fundamentally linked to experiences and perceptions formed during elementary school. Creating an inclusive environment where kids, regardless of gender or race, can be inspired to pursue a STEAM career is vital to reversing the
trend of STEAM-phobia in American students. Intimidating drills, memorization, repetition and outdated classroom techniques weren’t designed for future job needs. Conceptual problem solving, active learning, leadership and social influence, technology design, ideation, and critical thinking and analytical skills will be as important as reading and writing in tomorrow’s workforce, and are better taught through a hands-on, peer-based approach that integrates fun as an essential ingredient to learning.
technology as a tool that students can create with prepares them for their future careers. These young engineers, empowered, knowledgeable, and excited about technology, science and math, are not a hypothetical. They exist today at Zaniac. With the tide of the STEAM needs not going away, these kids will lead the way.
The sooner we embrace teaching students not just how to use technology as a tool for learning math and reading, but also to create technology itself, the sooner they’ll be on a path to success. Zaniac, a K-8 STEAM enrichment program in South Miami, is leading the charge for a forward-thinking approach that allows students to grasp math and logic concepts, fundamental to computer programming, in a way that feels like play. Game-based learning utilizing Minecraft™ has completely rewritten the established paradigm of learning as work, and a modern pedagogy capitalizes on the love kids have for the game to teach science, math and engineering. Modular robotics bridge the gap between theory and practice in engineering. The introduction of
