Every year in June, we celebrate Father’s Day. It is one day a year that provides us with the opportunity to show appreciation for the impact they have on our children. It also can be a day to acknowledge any male role model in their lives.

Fathers must actively engage in their children’s lives. Communication and quality time together will model positive behaviors and make a huge difference. Children are more likely to develop better, positive peer relationships and friendships, which is where their self-esteem and self-worth can flourish.

A positive Father or male role model can serve as a guide of inspiration that embodies the traits and behaviors they want to emulate. These positive models can play an indispensable role in helping boys develop their moral compass. They can demonstrate the importance of honesty, integrity, and empathy to help create a compassionate society and become a loving, fair, caring young man. Without this, they may look at celebrities and sports stars as their heroes, which can often demonstrate “bad behavior”, frequently generated by the superficial

example of great wealth.

I am proud to state that my grandson has a Father (and Mother) who never misses a practice or game or any opportunity to support their sons. They focus on spending quality time, creating a ‘teachable moment” whenever it arises. Fortunately, my grandson and basketball star, Jace, has devoted coaches named Al Agon and Huey Ball. Carlos Lopes, also skilled coach for another basketball star, Kenneth Richey is flourishing under his guidance.

The positive impact they have on the children is immense. They are all successful businessmen and fathers, yet they give countless hours to coach, practice, and teach that commitment, dedication, and hard work are fun while being life-changing. I am confident that many young men will develop valuable skills (besides basketball) that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

I also want to honor the remarkable fathers who exemplify strength, love, and dedication as caregivers. Salomon Manzur, a devoted father from Peru, embodies unwavering resilience despite facing unimaginable loss.

His son, Chalito, bravely battled brain cancer. Although he is no longer with them, Salomon continues to cherish the memories they share while caring for his beloved daughters for children, Florencia and Mauricio.

Similarly, Angel Espinosa’s selfless devotion to his daughter Julianne Maria, who bravely battles Rett Syndrome, is truly inspiring. Angel’s unwavering care and support for Julianne, from bathing her to attending her therapies, demonstrates the boundless love of a father.

Also, despite his busy schedule, Carlos Lopez finds time to volunteer as a coach for various youth sports teams, instilling valuable lessons of teamwork and perseverance in his children, Caia and CJ. These fathers exemplify the extraordinary love and commitment that define fatherhood, making them true heroes in their family’s and community’s eyes.

Congratulations to all Dad’s this year. Your time and love will be imprinted on the hearts of your sons. No matter how tall they grow, they will always look up to you.

Anybody who has worn a hand-me-down, shared a bathroom or survived a long car trip with a brother or a sister knows that siblings can affect your life in nearly every way possible.

Researchers, however, are just starting to unspool the ways those relationships affect health.

“It’s kind of an underdeveloped area,” said Dr. Susan B. Sisson, a professor of nutritional sciences at University of Oklahoma Health Sciences in Oklahoma City who has studied sibling-health connections. But research is hinting at the power of siblings – or their absence.

Evidence suggests that siblings have “a pretty strong influence” on health behaviors related to obesity, physical activity, nutrition and more, Sisson said.

Here are some of the links researchers have found between siblings and various health factors.

HOW WE EAT

Sisson was co-author on a study, published in 2019 in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, that compared the habits of 43 children with siblings with 27 only children. It showed that young children with siblings ate healthier diets than children with no siblings. “Some of that’s probably just a proxy of busy parents,” she said.

Indeed, children with more siblings have healthier diets and watch less television, according to a study published in Social Science and Medicine in 2017, which found that every additional sibling correlated with a decline of 2.6 percentage points in the likelihood of obesity in early adolescence.

Other analyses also have associated having siblings with lower levels of obesity than in people with no siblings.

HOW WE MOVE

Children with siblings have higher levels of physical activity than only children, Sisson said. An analysis of previous research that she helped write suggested that children who had more siblings were more active.

A separate study of 161 children at a preschool in Portugal, published in Children in 2021, found that children in homes with siblings tended to have higher motor skills than children without siblings.

A sibling can be “a built-in playmate,” Sisson said. A parent might be more willing to send a child outside to play if they have an older brother or sister to keep an eye on them, she suggested, or children might be more likely to be allowed to walk home if they can do so as a pair rather than alone. Genes, of course, play a big role in fitness as well as obesity, she said. “But genetics doesn’t necessarily influence whether or not you have somebody to kick the ball back to you.”

And then there’s chores. “When there’s more people in the household, there’s more work to be done in the household,” Sisson said, and it’s more likely the parents will delegate that work.

Osai’s own research into youth sports has found that siblings who have warm relationships with older siblings tend to follow their interest in sports. He knows this from his personal life, too.

THE RISKS WE TAKE

Siblings influence our choices related to delinquency and risky behaviors, such as smoking and drugs and alcohol use, Osai said. Siblings who are similar in terms of age or biological sex feel more socially connected or report warmer relationships, and are more likely to follow an older sibling who engages in risky behavior, he said.

Mental health Research suggests siblings can affect us for better or for worse.

A study published in December in the Journal of Family Issues that looked at the data of about 9,400 eighth graders in China and about 9,100 from the U.S. linked more siblings with poorer mental health.

The Harvard Study of Adult Development, which has been tracking two groups of men since 1939, linked poorer relationships with siblings before age 20 to the risk of major depression in adulthood.

On the other hand, a study of Latina women in Southern California, published in Evolution, Medicine, and Public Health in 2021, said that having sisters and more frequent communication with siblings was associated with fewer depressive symptoms during pregnancy.

And a study published in the Journal of Family Psychology in 2019 found that among older adults, a warm relationship with siblings was associated with lower levels of loneliness. Given all the potential ways siblings can influence health, what should someone do? Sisson suggested that for parents, just being aware of the role that siblings and families play is important.

She encourages parents to “do what you can when you can to promote shared family meals, healthy eating, healthful choices of food, limited screen time and more movement.” Parents of only children might want to be extra conscious of family mealtimes or creating opportunities for active play.

Given the potential lifelong influence of a sibling, Osai said, nurturing sibling relationships is important.

“It is an intimate relationship,” he said. Siblings can be allies who share secrets, and they also can cause a lot of hurt. So “leaving room for forgiveness” and taking an interest in one another’s activities can pay off over time, he said.

Osai acknowledges that sibling relationships can be filled with conflict, rivalry and jealousy. But he recognizes the support he received from his siblings and how it contributed to the success he has had both in and out of athletics.

Sibling relationships can be tough at times,” he said. “But these relationships – they can be so warm and so beneficial in a variety of ways.

The fleeting nature of summers often drives us into a whirlwind of planning-juggling travel arrangements, summer camps, and an array of activities to ensure our children have the best experience. Yet, amidst this flurry of logistics, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters: the connection we share with our children. This summer, let’s pause and reflect on the bigger picture— the essence of our bond with our kids. By aligning our plans with our family values and aspirations, we can transcend the mere busyness of the season and foster meaningful connections that endure beyond the summer months

Allow your children to lead the playtime, nurturing curiosity, and

Dedicate quality one-on-one time with each child, fostering deeper

• View challenges as opportunities for mutual learning and growth.

REFLECTING ON YOUR PRIORITIES

Before diving into the summer rush, take a moment to ponder these questions:

• What holds the utmost importance for me this summer?

• What lasting memories do I want to create for my children and myself?

• Are my expectations realistic and in tune with my child’s capabilities and developmental stage?

CRAFTING AN INTENTIONAL PLAN

With your priorities in mind, consider these strategies to infuse intentionality into your summer:

Balance and Flexibility: Strike a harmonious blend of structured activities and spontaneous moments. Embrace the present rather than being consumed by a packed schedule.

Mindset Shift: Emphasize connection, shared experiences, and personal growth. Engage in activities that foster learning and bonding, while also pursuing individual goals like learning a new skill or

Manage Expectations: Acknowledge the inherent unpredictability of parenting. Embrace the inevitable ups and downs, from sibling squabbles to unforeseen hurdles, with patience.

Self-Care: Prioritize your well-being amidst the demands of summer. Carve out moments for self-care and adult time, free from guilt or obligation.

EMBRACING THE MOMENT

As summer unfolds, remain mindful of your intentional plan. Remind yourself of what truly matters amidst the hustle and bustle. After all, the summers we spend with our children are finite, each one a precious opportunity to nurture our bonds and create lasting memories

Approach this season with a grounded perspective, focusing on the essence of connection while relinquishing the need for control. Embrace the joy, the challenges, and the unexpected moments that define the summer experience. Above all, cherish the precious time spent with your children, for it is these moments that shape the beautiful mosaic of family life.

When life strikes with unexpected hardships, why rely on a Go Fund Me fundraiser or a well-to-do family member to help you pay for expenditures?

Life is full of twists and turns that can leave you and your family cash-less or in debt if you are not prepared. For those moments when navigating life seems difficult, you can fund yourself with a type of insurance coverage that works as an investment-like savings accounts, which can help you pay for medical expenses, mortgage, or even the life insurance premiums and other expenditures when you need money due to loss of income o critical illness. That’s right, life insurance is not just about having cash value when the policyholder passess away.

The initiative of funding yourself has helped thousands of families navigate financial difficulties, allowing them to use their accrued money to avoid having to recur to a third person or having to apply for bankruptcy. Funding yourself with life benefits should be the first option when you find yourself without a job, or with expenses that cannot be covered by your salary alone.

The same dedication and approach to care is also seen in the communitywhere the child is provided a team in order to reach optimal improvement and maximize functioning. In addition to using traditional based behavioral therapy techniques, A1A focuses on total health and well-being of the child and family. This is evident through the support and

guidance of A1A’s Medical Director, Nursing, PT, OT service departments.

2. ACHIEVING PATIENT SATISFACTION

A1A Behavioral Health’s focus and approach to achieving patient satisfaction is through open communication with all stakeholders. The priority lies in having an honest dialogue with staff, families, and other health disciplines that oversee the child’s care and development. Care plans are customized to meet the individual needs of the child. This mode of communication plays a very important role in making sure delivery of care remains consistent and effective.

3. A1A’S MISSION

One sees the A1A slogan written as follows, enhancing the quality of life of all patients, families, and all those we serve. These words have meaning. Mailyn Fernandez, A1A’s president strives to live by this everyday. Applying that same philosophy to both her professional and personal life, that passion is passed on to the rest of the A1A staff. By achieving this model of care, it allows for the best overall results for the children and families who entrust their care to A1A.

4. FUTURE GOALS

A1A Behavioral Health is proud of the work they have done thus far – having served hundreds of children and families, and continuing to serve hundreds more. They opened a state-of-the-art ABA Therapy center in 2023, a first of its kind in South Florida. Future goals include to continue expanding outpatient care services for children in the community (homes, schools, daycare centers, any location where their needs are best met). A1A is licensed to provide ABA Therapy services throughout the state of Florida. Furthermore, A1A is looking at opening more behavioral health centers, having identified areas of great need. Currently, A1A’s core service location revolves around MiamiDade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. They will be looking to expand to other geographical areas with the long-term goal of being a valued and trusted provider throughout the entire state.

5. A1A’S LEGACY

A1A Behavioral Health has always strived to live by their mission of enhancing the quality of life of all those served. Medina and Fernandez both agree that is the sole reason why A1A exists. They believe that the care provided by A1A to the children they serve allows them to maximize their potential, thus improving their lives and the lives of all those around them. They acknowledge that A1A is not perfect, however, the organization’s work ethic, dedication to what they do, how they do it and why they do it is unparalleled.
