The Celebration of As Valentine’s day, the holiday of love, is approaching, it is the perfect opportunity to show and tell others that we love them. This year it is suggested that you reach inside and expand your usual list of spouse, children, parents, siblings, boyfriend, and girlfriend. Your children can learn by your example as they witness you saying it to dear friends. I have “adopted” both male and female friends that I love like my brother and sister and feel blessed to share a special bond. I realized it even more this year as I signed my Christmas cards (yes, I still mail them) with a personal note, signing love instead of always or sincerely. There are many different types of relationships. Family, Friendships, Acquaintanceships and Romantic. Think of who you love besides our parents, spouse, children and siblings. It is called platonic love and the thesaurus defines as Friendly, Amicable, Neighborly, and Companionable. Appreciation is the purest, strongest form of love. It is the outward-bound kind of love that asks for nothing and gives everything. A strong and healthy relationship is built on the three C’s: Communication, Compromise and Commitment. Think about how to use communication to make your friend to feel needed, and appreciated. Platonic love relationships are often the bond between friends, which can be nourishing, fulfilling, and a source of support as we go through life. Research over the years has overwhelmingly indicated the importance of having strong social connections outside your family, and platonic friendships are typically a significant part of these networks. • Closeness: Both people in the relationship feel a closeness to each other and feel that they share things in common. • Honesty: Both individuals feel that they can share what they really think and feel with the other person.
•
•
Acceptance: These relationships tend to feel easy and comfortable. Both people feel that they are safe and free to be themselves. Understanding: People who share a platonic relationship have a connection, but they also recognize and respect each other’s personal space. They don’t try to force the other person to do things they don’t want to do or be something that they are not.
How do you say I love you platonically? For example, you could say: • “I love how fun you are.”
• • • • •
“I love spending time with you.” “I love you. Thank you for being my best friend.” “I love you, man. You’re my best friend.” “I love how we always laugh when we’re together.” “You’re so kind and thoughtful.”
Think about the friends that you love, that special bond that is established in a relationship of complicity, fellowship and shared values – more simply, “the highest form of love.” You can explain to your children and model behavior that they can copy. It will expand their world!

Make Being Kind to Yourself a Priority
By American Heart Association
One of the first lessons children are taught is to be kind to others. While this is heavily emphasized, how often are kids reminded to take time and be kind to themselves? Being kind to yourself can look many ways and is often easier said than done. Teaching kids from a young age to practice kindness and selfcompassion can alleviate stress and allow for a more fulfilled life.
Here are three easy ways you can help your kids build healthy habits to make being kind to themselves a priority: 1.
2.
TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO PRACTICE SPEAKING DAILY AFFIRMATIONS. Affirmations are simple, positive statements that buoy self-confidence and help protect kids from feelings of helplessness and overwhelm. These empowering mantras have profound effects on the conscious and unconscious mind. Affirmations like “I am brilliant and can do anything I set my mind to” and “I am strong” can help build a growth mindset and reduce stress. CREATE A POSITIVE ROUTINE. Build self-love into your everyday routine by encouraging morning meditation, evening journaling or a dinner-time discussion of intentions for the next day. Taking time to reflect and celebrate as a family and as individuals builds a strong sense of community and self, which is great for the whole family.
3.
CHILL. For children to be kind to themselves, it’s important they have time and ways to combat the stress of daily life. Be sure your daily schedule includes downtime to relax and reflect. You might want to build in time as a family such as a screen-free or activityfree day each week where the focus is on rest, play and relaxation.
As we all know, it takes a village to instill healthy habits like this for our children. That’s why the American Heart Association is working in schools across the nation to teach children about being kind to ourselves. Throughout the Association’s Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge programs, schools are equipped with tools and activities to support both mental and physical well-being for students, families and staff. Parents and schools in [insert city] who are interested in bringing the American Heart Association’s in-school programs to their children should visit www.heart.org/ getstarted.

Decoding Challenging Behaviors in Children:
A Journey of Understanding and Growth By Dr. Sanaa Mrabet Licensed Clinical Psychologist Navigating the complexities of your child’s challenging behaviors can often feel like trying to interpret a foreign language, a task both daunting and perplexing. These behaviors, rather than being mere disruptions, are critical signals - rich in meaning, indicating unmet needs, emotions, or a lack of skills. Let’s explore some insightful approaches and strategies to more effectively address and understand these behaviors. **Identifying Skill Gaps** Often, challenging behaviors in children stem from specific skill deficits. Two prime examples are emotional regulation and communication skills. **Emotional regulation** The capacity to manage and express emotions appropriately. a skill that develops overtime and is influenced by the child’s temperament, and the environment. Challenges in this area frequently manifests as negative behaviors - think tantrums, full blown meltdown, persistent whining, or an outright refusal to cooperate. Does this sound familiar? **Communication Skills** The ability to understand, and to express thoughts, feelings, and information. Underdeveloped communication skills can significantly contribute to what appears as defiance or disobedience. In reality, these behaviors might be a child’s attempt to articulate thoughts or feelings they cannot otherwise express, especially regarding their wants and needs. Recognizing these behaviors as a form of communication can guide parents in nurturing their child’s emotional intelligence, resilience, and communication skills - all vital for future success. **The Importance of Emotional Literacy** Emotional literacy, while seemingly complex, is fundamentally about
understanding and responding to one’s own emotions and those of others. Cultivating this skill can lead to healthier emotional expressions and fewer disruptive behaviors. Parents should seek ways to develop this attribute in their children. **A Comprehensive Perspective** View challenging behaviors holistically, considering the entire context. Instead of seeing them as mere problems, view them as opportunities for growth and learning, offering insights into your child’s needs and potential areas of development. Challenging behaviors are often multi-layered, each layer representing a different facet of a child’s emotional world. Unraveling these requires patience, empathy, and a commitment to understanding. For instance, a child’s refusal to cooperate might be due to fear of failure, unmet need for autonomy, or even an attempt to assert his/her preferences. Though complex, this journey strengthens the bond between parent and child, yielding lasting benefits. **Beyond Managing: Teaching** While temporary measures like rewards and consequences are always there as a short-term solution, a more sustainable and long-term approach lies in teaching. Focus on identifying and filling in the skill gaps,
enabling your child to independently handle challenges. **Fostering a Supportive Environment** Creating an environment that promotes open communication and skill development lays the foundation for a supportive family dynamic. Parents who strive to understand and address challenging behaviors can significantly enhance their child’s overall well-being. **The Power of Personalized Approach** Recognize that each child is unique, and so are the reasons behind their challenging behaviors. Tailor your approach to the child’s personality, temperament, sensory needs, and experiences. Behaviors might stem from frustration, a need for attention, or reactions to stressors. Understanding these complexities allows parents to customize their responses effectively. **Conclusion: Embrace the Challenge** Accepting the challenge of decoding your child’s difficult behaviors is an investment in their emotional health and future success. It invites you into a continuous dialogue with your child, fostering an environment where open communication, diverse skill development, and mutual understanding are paramount. Embrace this opportunity to deepen your family connections.

Affordable Care Act By Ingrid Menendez
MANY AMERICANS ARE GETTING INEXPENSIVE HEALTH INSURANCE. HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD TOO. It had never been so easy to be covered for a pediatric, emergency, maternity, newborn care, surgeries, and much more while keeping premium costs low. Many families are relying on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) more now in these post-pandemic years than when it was launched in 2013. The law is also known as Obamacare and has suffered many changes throughout the years. One of the most positive has been the stimulus of the Inflation Reduction Act, where many policy owners receive a subsidy that covers most of the premium, which allows them to pay less than $10 a month. That’s a great price tag considering that ACA is as effective as high-premium private insurance. The Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) reported that more than 11.5 million people enrolled for coverage starting in 2023, increasing by 18% from last year’s enrollments. But the subsidy is not the only feature that attracts enrollees. A disease or a pre-existing condition is not a factor in being denied coverage. People rejected previously in private insurance are turning to ACA to cover their health insurance needs. Enrolling is as easy as contacting the National Enrollment Center of Las Madrinas de Los Seguros. 305-MADRINAS 305-623-7462

Creating Confident Kids In A Digital World By Beth Brown
Creating confident kids in a digital world filled with filtered social media images and messages of perfection has become increasingly difficult. With a growing number of kids on social media starting as young as 7 years old, it’s important to consider the future implications. Filters vs. Reality Many people’s social media profiles appear perfect. Distinguishing between what is real and what is not has become challenging for kids who often view social media as reality. In fact, 63% of parents reported concerns around kids being able to tell what information is real or fake. Early Risks As early as age 8, kids are starting to establish their self-worth. By the time they’re approaching and into their teens, the opinions of peers become more important than those of parents. Consequently, it’s no surprise self-esteem and body confidence can plummet when social media is used to determine popularity based on likes and comments. With an overload of social comparison at their fingertips, it makes sense that kids who spend more than 2 hours a day on social media are at a higher risk for mental health issues, especially depression. With a reported 80% of 13-year-olds editing their selfies, social media pressure needs to be taken seriously by every adult who has influence over young people. Model C.A.R.E. Social media is here to stay. With that in mind, consider using C.A.R.E.™ to help kids create and maintain their confidence and self-esteem. C – Communicate consistently For children under the age of 11, determine if they’re ready for social media. Age doesn’t always equal maturity. If you aren’t sure, experiment with a trial period and clearly state expectations and consequences.
Communicate potential positives and negatives of social media. Discuss what is true and false and how filters change images and appearance. Talk about selfies and how those could have a negative impact on body confidence. Once children are on social media, keep communication open and consider having a weekly check-in to review what they’re seeing, how they’re feeling, and if social media is helping or hurting them. A – Appreciate yourself Be a role model for appreciating yourself by: • Taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. • Avoiding the use of self-deprecating remarks about your appearance. • Help kids appreciate their unique value by asking questions like: • What are your strengths, special skills, and qualities? • How can you make a unique contribution to the world? Use activities from the Dove Confidence Kit to talk with kids about what their bodies can do rather than how their bodies look. If you’re a coach, lead your team through the Strong Teammate Activity which involves asking team members to write down 2-3 strengths they bring to the team and one strength for each of their teammates.
R – Restrict accessibility and reduce usage Phones, apps, and social media are engineered to get us hooked. One former product engineer for Google used the term “brain hacking” and compared cell phones to slot machines. A social media executive has talked openly about how platforms are designed to trigger dopamine-driven feedback loops that have the potential to turn all of us, including kids, into social media addicts. Suggestions to restrict accessibility and reduce usage of social media by kids include: • Keep social media use under 2 hours/ day. • Create a personalized family social media plan to include the purpose and quantity of usage. • Utilize parental controls on social media apps. • For kids under that age of 11, only allow use of apps their school recommends. • Set the in-app timers on Instagram and TikTok. E – Emphasize self-improvement and effort To help kids create confidence, one of the most impactful things we can do is encourage them to focus on self-improvement, which is how they’re doing in comparison to themselves rather than others.
