Mother’s Day this year falls on Sunday, May 11th—a special day dedicated to celebrating moms. Despite the large displays of Mother’s Day cards in grocery stores, pharmacies, and department stores, too many husbands, partners, and children wait until the last minute to pick from the leftover, sparse selection. Instead, why not take this as an opportunity to plan ahead and make it truly meaningful? Including children in the planning process is a great way to teach them the importance of honoring and appreciating the woman who holds the family together.
This year, shop early for the perfect card that genuinely expresses love and appreciation. If dining out is part of the plan, make a reservation in advance to secure a spot
at her favorite restaurant before everything books up. Alternatively, consider organizing a special dinner at home. If cooking feels overwhelming, use any meal delivery service while still setting a beautiful table with flowers and candles. Small gestures like ensuring the kids are dressed nicely, making the bed, tidying up, or even doing a load of laundry can add to the effort and make the day extra special. Just be mindful not to overdo it—she might start suspecting something!
The Best Gift a Mom Can Receive: SelfCare & Acceptance
Beyond the thoughtful gestures from family, one of the greatest gifts a mother can give herself is acceptance and self-forgiveness. Many moms push themselves to exhaustion,
often putting their own needs last. Working moms may struggle with guilt over not spending enough time with their children, while stay-at-home moms may feel guilty about not contributing financially. However, self-care is not selfish—it’s essential. Prioritizing personal well-being helps create the healthiest and happiest version of herself, benefiting not just her, but the entire family.
Mother’s Day is just a few weeks away—start planning now to make it truly unforgettable!
Children who experience a stroke may be at higher risk for developing anxiety, depression, and physical symptoms such as headaches and stomach aches, particularly between ages 8 and 9, according to a preliminary study to be presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2025.
Researchers at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto analyzed data from 161 children who suffered an ischemic stroke (caused by a blocked blood vessel) between 2002 and 2020. These children were part of the hospital’s stroke registry and were monitored until adulthood. Between ages 5 and 17, they completed a Behavior Assessment System for Children questionnaire to screen for depression, anxiety, and somatization (physical symptoms caused by psychological distress).
Key Findings:
• 13% of childhood stroke survivors had depression, 13.7% had anxiety, and 17.4% experienced somatization.
• The highest risk of developing mental health challenges occurred between ages 8.5 and 9.6.
• Stroke survivors scored higher on mood, anxiety, and somatization assessments than their peers in the general population.
• Children who exhibited somatization symptoms were more likely to have experienced a stroke after age 2.
while medical advances have improved physical recovery, mental health effects can linger long after hospital discharge. “Parents often report ongoing emotional struggles in their children. Early intervention is crucial,” she explained.
Experts stress that health care professionals should proactively screen for mental health disorders in childhood stroke survivors, including less obvious symptoms like frequent stomach aches and minor pains.
Dr. Nomazulu Dlamini, director of the Children’s Stroke Program in Toronto, emphasized that mental health issues in young stroke survivors are often overlooked. “We need to identify the warning signs early and provide support to improve their quality of life,” she said.
Dr. Jennifer Crosbie, a psychologist at The Hospital for Sick Children, noted that
Dr. Heather J. Fullerton, a leading pediatric stroke expert, highlighted the underrecognized link between anxiety and physical symptoms in young children. “This study shows we need to incorporate mental health check-ins as part of follow-up care,” she said.
While the study provides valuable insights, researchers acknowledge limitations, including its single-site design and reliance on questionnaires instead of clinical evaluations. Further research is needed to develop standardized mental health screenings for childhood stroke survivors.

College costs increase exponentially every year, creating a burden on both the student and the parent. Estimates show that by 2030 the average tuition could double the current rates.
By planning ahead and creating a life insurance strategy that gives you the option to save for college can give you and your child peace of mind. An insurance policy with Las Madrinas de Los Seguros with a tax-free cash value component can be used towards educational expenses.
Some prepaid plans in the market don’t offer a high value return such as the one offered by Life Insurance, that’s why it’s important to start the policy when the child is in his early years, allowing the policy to yield a higher return.
You may have many more questions such as “what happens if my child does not want to go to college?” or “what other uses does the accumulated value have?” and more importantly, “how can I get this College Funding plan?”
We have all the answers, contact us now to learn more.
At Miami Kids Magazine, we believe water safety is one of the most crucial life skills a child can learn. Today, we are honored to speak with Nicole Pierce, franchise owner of British Swim School of Greater Miami, as she carries forward the mission of the school’s beloved founder, Rita Goldberg.
Rita’s passion for teaching life-saving swimming skills impacted thousands, and her legacy endures through every child who learns to float and every family who feels safer around water. In this interview, we explore her lasting influence, British Swim School’s unique teaching methods, and how her vision continues to shape swim education today.
Join us as we celebrate the power of swimming to transform lives.
How would you describe Rita Goldberg’s impact on the world of swim education and water safety?
Rita Goldberg revolutionized water survival education. In 1981, she introduced the back floating method, proving that infants, young children, and those with disabilities could learn to float and survive. She made swim lessons more accessible by utilizing underused pools for structured instruction, helping prevent drownings and making water safety a priority for families nationwide.
You mentioned that Rita was a hero in your life. Can you share a special memory or lesson she taught you that still guides you today?
Rita always saw potential in people, including me. She transitioned me from a swim teacher to a franchise owner, believing in my ability before I did. One of her most powerful mottos was, “You can’t count the accidents that don’t happen.” That philosophy drives me every day. She understood that swim education wasn’t just about teaching strokes—it was about preventing tragedies. Her leadership, resilience, and passion continue to inspire me in my work.
British Swim School to over 350 locations nationwide. Our Miami branch is committed to broadening that reach. We train passionate instructors, develop new partnerships, and enhance our student experience. We also launched the Rita Goldberg Water Safety Scholarship, providing lessons to children in need. With Miami-Dade ranking among the highest in drowning rates, this initiative ensures that more kids gain access to life-saving swim education.
What advice would you give parents hesitant about enrolling their children in swim lessons? How can they ensure water safety at home and beyond?
Swimming isn’t just a sport it’s a life-saving skill. Some kids may resist at first, but just like wearing a seatbelt, swim lessons are non-negotiable. Research shows swim lessons reduce drowning risk by 80%, even while a child is still learning.
To enhance water safety, parents should:
• Install barriers: Pool fences and locked gates prevent unsupervised access.
British Swim School emphasizes preventing drowning, a silent epidemic. What key safety lessons should children and parents take away from your programs? Drowning is preventable, yet it remains the leading cause of accidental death for children under four. Our “Survival of the Littles” approach ensures that before learning strokes, children first master floating and breathing techniques. Our fun, gentle teaching methods help even the youngest swimmers gain confidence.
We offer a nine-level program, ensuring gradual skill development. Our noncompetitive Miami Wahoos Swim Team keeps kids engaged while improving their skills. Plus, swim lessons aren’t just for kids we teach adults, too! By making survival swimming accessible, we empower families with the skills they need to stay safe.
As a franchise owner, how do you plan to continue Rita’s mission and inspire future generations of swimmers?
Rita’s legacy lives on through Buzz Franchise Brands, which expanded
• Assign a Water Watcher: Designate a responsible adult to monitor children around water.
• Learn CPR: In emergencies, immediate response can be lifesaving.
• Check water first: If a child is missing, check pools and bathtubs first seconds matter.
By prioritizing swim education and implementing these precautions, we can work together to prevent drowning and keep children safe.
