Understanding learning differences. the power of individualized learning.
There is confusion with a learning disability and a learning difficulty. Difficulty does not affect a child’s general intelligence, as a disability is due to overall cognitive impairment. Learning disabilities have no cure, but early diagnosis can lessen their effects and teach coping skills that can increase better success in school.
Learning Disabilities are used to describe thinking and learning differences. It effects how the way the brain takes in, stores, and uses information.
Everyone has heard of the term attentiondeficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) which is not a learning disability, but can make it difficult to learn when a child can’t sit still and listen to the teacher. Frequently medication is thrown at a child too quickly without searching for ways to assist their learning process. When my adult son’s 2nd grade teacher complained that he was a handful in class and if I had considered medicating him. My suggestion of sending him to school with a toothbrush to clean the basketball court shocked her (she laughed later). I approved of him being utilized as her classroom helper to hand out books, clean the board and run notes to the office, etc. It worked out great for everyone and I am forever grateful to her because that he really thought it was because he was “her favorite”.

Dyslexia is a common learning disability with experiencing problems with reading, writing and spelling. They might struggle learning how to read a regular clock, learn another language, rules to a game, follow directions, repeating what was just said, and find it difficult following multi-step directions. Boys are known to struggle more than girls (which explains husbands!)
Students with dyslexia need to utilize different tools to help them. Some learn best from verbal instructions instead of written. Audio books or recording lessons can be helpful. Parents and teachers need to seek possible ways of discovering the students’ strengths and weaknesses. We want to avoid them getting frustrated which can affect their mood and emotional stability. About 3 in 10 people with dyslexia also have ADHD. And if you have ADHD, you’re six times more likely than most people to have a learning disorder such as dyslexia. But having ADHD doesn’t mean you’ll get dyslexia. Nor does dyslexia cause ADHD.
People that are dyslexic have strengths such as good problem solvers, being creative, artistic, and three-dimensional thinking. Many famous people have dyslexia, entertainers and actors such as Cher, Tom Cruise, Robin Williams, Steven Spielberg, Anderson Cooper, Pablo Picasso, Richard Branson, and even the genius, Albert Einstein.
Popcorn is prepared in the same pot, in the same heat, in the same oil and yet the kernels do not pop at the same time. Don’t compare your child to other children. Their turn to pop is coming. If they can’t learn the way we teach, we need to teach them the way they learn.

Healthy fun or health risk? The two sides of fear
The good news is that fear can persuade us to avoid dangerous situations or help us flee from an angry bear.
The bad news is that fear can lead to chronic stress, with serious health consequences.
So should that affect your Halloween plans?
Probably not, said Zachary Sikora, medical director of psychology at Northwestern Medicine in suburban Chicago – unless you think scary movies and haunted houses might trigger more serious anxiety, or if you have cardiovascular disease that could be exacerbated by a sudden and dramatic increase in heart rate and blood pressure.
“For most people, experiencing mild to moderate levels of fear in a safe context is good,” he said. “We can embrace that and have fun.”
But whether it’s frivolous fun or terrifying trauma, the psychological impact has physiological results.
“The brain-heart connection is fascinating, and we don’t talk about it enough,” said Dr. Puja Mehta, associate professor of cardiology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. “There are direct effects and indirect effects.”
It starts in the amygdala, two almond-shaped clusters near the base of the brain. “That’s the fear center that reminds us when there
is something threatening, in order to keep us safe,” Sikora said.
That can caution us not to approach the edge of the Grand Canyon. The sudden stress also causes the body to release hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, to provide a sense of alertness and extra energy to deal with the threat. That’s the fight or flight response. Without fear or the amygdala, Sikora said, “I think our life spans would be much shorter.” So far so good. The problems, Sikora and Mehta said, start when the fear doesn’t recede even if the danger goes away.
“All these things happening to your body are good if you’re in a dangerous situation,” Sikora said. “But it’s not good if you’re in bed trying to go to sleep. When that fear becomes untethered, it can really impact our functioning and our quality of life.”
From phobias to panic attacks to posttraumatic stress disorder, uncontrolled fear can disrupt lives and require psychological help. But there are medical consequences, too.
“People who stay in that stress mode tend to make poor lifestyle choices,” Mehta said. “You’re not going to eat as healthfully, you’re not going to exercise as much, you may not listen to your doctor’s advice. If you’re stressed out, there’s sleep disruption. And we know that’s not good for you from a
cardiac standpoint. And there even can be social isolation, which is also a risk factor” for cardiovascular problems.
Still, many people flock to horror films, bungee jumps and other pursuits regarded as a “good scare.”
Mehta thinks the effects are different from an unexpected fright, such as an earthquake or a violent attack, and a scare you’re prepared for.
“If I’m going on a roller coaster, I know what’s going to happen, and I’m ready for it,” she said.
Sikora – though he admits he was frightened by a haunted house as a child and still avoids them – agreed.
As Halloween approaches, Sikora advises, have fun and try new experiences, but don’t make existing anxieties worse.

When life strikes with unexpected hardships, why rely on a Go Fund Me fundraiser or a well-to-do family member to help you pay for expenditures?
Life is full of twists and turns that can leave you and your family cash-less or in debt if you are not prepared. For those moments when navigating life seems difficult, you can fund yourself with a type of insurance coverage that works as an investment-like savings accounts, which can help you pay for medical expenses, mortgage, or even the life insurance premiums and other expenditures when you need money due to loss of income o critical illness. That’s right, life insurance is not just about having cash value when the policyholder passess away.
The initiative of funding yourself has helped thousands of families navigate financial difficulties, allowing them to use their accrued money to avoid having to recur to a third person or having to apply for bankruptcy. Funding yourself with life benefits should be the first option when you find yourself without a job, or with expenses that cannot be covered by your salary alone.
A Journey of Hope and Innovation:
The Story Behind CRYSTAL ACADEMY
Celebrating 15 Years of Transforming Lives
In 2002, a family in Miami was blessed with the arrival of their son, David. Like many parents, they eagerly watched him grow and develop, but soon noticed something was amiss. By the age of 18 months, David began showing signs that would eventually lead to a life-changing diagnosis: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This diagnosis marked the beginning of a challenging yet inspiring journey for his family—a journey that would eventually lead to the creation of Crystal Academy, a beacon of hope for countless children with developmental delays. In this exclusive interview, Miami Kids Magazine sits down with Maria PalacioPike founder of Crystal Academy to delve into their personal story, explore the innovative therapies offered at the academy, and share insights and advice for other families navigating the world of ASD and developmental disorders. Join us as we learn about their mission to create a nurturing and enriching environment where every child can thrive, develop, and reach their full potential
Could you share more about the moment when you first realized that David was exhibiting signs of Autism and how it led to his diagnosis?
David was 16-18 months old when we first began to suspect something was amiss. The word autism never crossed my mind. We were told he was just delayed in speech, as most boys ‘tend to be’. But then came the lack of eye contact, wandering, not paying attention to his surroundings. Before his diagnosis, David’s last words were Mama, bebe’ when we brought his baby brother home. Many years went by before I heard the word Mama again.
What were some of the biggest challenges your family faced with the diagnosis, and how did you manage to overcome them? Always figuring out what was next for David. Where should we go? These were daunting
times, filled with silence and frustration as we tried to make sense of something we didn’t know anything about. Having a great partner by your side, strong family values, and supportive friends helped us survive the nightmare of those first months.
How did the experience with David inspire you to establish Crystal Academy, and what is its mission?
David’s journey took us to many places in our quest to find the best therapies, including holistic and biomedical interventions. This taught us that collaboration between therapists in the field was the best approach to helping our son. Please run if you find someone who tells you they have the cure or that you can’t do other therapies while under their ‘care’.
Our mission at Crystal is to provide the best evidence-based therapies and individualized intervention for children and adolescents with autism disorders and other developmental delays, promoting language, communication, education, socialization, independence, inclusion opportunities, and communitybased instruction.
CA takes a holistic approach to therapy. Can you explain how combining the various therapies—behavior, Speech, and OT/ Sensory Integration— benefits children with developmental delays?
Behavioral therapy, often based on principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), focuses on improving specific behaviors, such as communication, social skills, and daily living
MARY AND DAVID
skills. It helps children learn new skills and reduce challenging behaviors. Speech therapy helps children improve their communication skills, including speech production, language comprehension, and social communication. It also addresses feeding and swallowing issues if present. When combined with behavioral therapy, children can learn to use their communication skills more effectively in real-life situations, reinforcing the gains made in speech therapy. Occupational Therapy (OT) with Sensory Integration helps children develop fine motor skills, coordination, and daily living skills (e.g., dressing, eating). Sensory integration therapy, a component of OT, focuses on helping children process and respond to sensory information in a more adaptive way. Cooperatively addressing multiple areas of development leads to a more rounded improvement in the child’s abilities. Skills learned in one therapy can be reinforced in others.
The Philosophy at Crystal emphasizes that the brain can be rewired through the right interventions. Can you elaborate on how this is implemented in the daily programs and therapies? Each child’s program is personalized, incorporating evidencebased practices that stimulate neural plasticity. For instance, reflexintegration strategies and neurodevelopmental activities are tailored to enhance specific cognitive and emotional functions, fostering new neural connections. Sensory integration techniques help children better process and respond to sensory information, while innovative educational methods, such as adaptive learning technologies and interactive play, are used to strengthen motor abilities, cognitive skills, and adaptive behaviors.
What advice would you give to parents who are at the beginning of their journey with a child diagnosed with ASD or other developmental delays: Educating yourself on the available resources, services, and your child’s rights will help you make informed decisions and provide your child with the best possible support.
1. Review your health insurance policy to understand what services are covered, such as behavior (ABA), speech, and occupational therapies for children with ASD.
2. Look for Grants and Aid for Early Intervention: Many states provide early intervention services for children under three who have developmental delays or disabilities.
3. Public school systems provide free special education services from age 3 and must offer an Individualized Education Program (IEP). It’s crucial to participate in meetings and understand laws like IDEA to advocate for your child’s right to a “free and appropriate public education.
4. Contact our favorite organizations, UMNSU CARD and Parent to Parent, which offer a plethora of free resources.
5. Do at least one thing that you love weekly. It will strengthen you.
Early and consistent intervention is essential for children to reach their fullest potential. You are your child’s best advocate, and there are many resources available to support you. We have gained a lot of knowledge over the past 15 years. Please feel free to call us, as we have done the groundwork for you.
