StressFree Backto-School: Tips for a Smooth Transition into the New School Year

Preparing for the new school year can be both exciting and stressful. With a little planning, you can significantly reduce stress and focus on the excitement and adventure of the new grade. Here are some top tips:

1. Early Summer Reading Check: Discuss your child’s required summer reading early rather than a few days before school starts. They might not be completely honest about their progress!

2. Schedule Appointments Early: Book dentist and doctor appointments before their schedules fill up.

3. Online School Supply Shopping: Purchase school supplies online for convenience.

4. Uniforms and Labeling: Buy all uniforms and label them with your child’s name.

5. Practice Drive to School: Do a practice drive to the new school to familiarize yourself with the back streets, student drop-off/pick-up lines, and potential parking areas.

6. Car Pools and Class Lists: Request a class list to arrange potential carpools.

7. Register for Online Parent Portal & PTA: Sign up for the Parent Portal and PTA. If possible, volunteer to be a room parent. This allows you to assist the teacher and play an important role in your child’s school life.

8. Download School Calendar: Keep track of school holidays to arrange childcare if needed.

Cell Phone Guidelines:

Set Rules and Guidelines: Establish clear rules for cell phone use, including having the passwords to check for cyberbullying and limit social media. Pay for Insurance: Protect against loss or damage.

Set Up Tracking: Explain that tracking is for safety, not spying.

No Phones at Dinner: Enforce a nophone policy at the dinner table for everyone, including parents.

• Parental Access: Keep the phone charger in the parents’ bedroom to prevent overuse at night.

Create a Reward System: Develop a reward list together for following rules and working together. Choose family outings over money to boost self-esteem.

• Pre-planning takes effort, but it’s worth it. These steps will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable transition into the new school year.

Keep busy kids focused on heart health as they hEad back to school

The American Heart Association says staying active, eating healthy and getting plenty of sleep can help kids stay healthy now and for a lifetime.

As summer wraps up and kids head back to the classrooms, it’s important to recognize how young people spend their free time could impact their heart health. Too much screen time and unhealthy on-thego eating habits could make for some hard lessons in poor heart health in the future.

Federal guidelines recommend children and teens ages 6 to 17 get at least an hour of moderate to vigorous activity a day, including more intense activities at least three times a week.

Healthy eating is also important for growing kids. Once the busy school year starts, many may skip breakfast in the morning and if the family doesn’t have a scheduled mealtime, they may be grabbing unhealthy snacks on the go after school and munching on junk food while engaging in that screen time in the evenings.

Even sleep can significantly impact a child’s health. Adequate sleep promotes healing, improves brain function and reduces the risk for chronic diseases. Children require more sleep than adults, with recommendations for kids including:

• 10-16 hours for ages 5 and younger, including naps;

• 9-12 hours for ages 6-12;

• and 8-10 hours for ages 13-18. The American Heart Association suggests a few tips for helping keep kids heart-healthy:

• SCHEDULE FAMILY TIME FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. Weather permitting, go outdoors for a walk, a hike or even just some backyard games. Indoor activities can actually incorporate active screentime, like playing a danceoff or interactive sports video game.

• PLAN A WEEKLY MENU AND PREP YOUR MEALS. Encourage kids to help with meal planning and even grocery shopping. Make sure you have on hand foods they will eat that are also healthy for them. Taking the time to prepare for the week ahead – even cutting up fruits and veggies for healthy snacks – can help improve overall diets.

• SIMPLIFY YOUR FAMILY’S SCHEDULE In today’s society we’re expected to do it all. But this type of non-stop lifestyle isn’t sustainable or healthy. Try prioritizing your activities and see what you can do without so you’ll have more time for the

things that matter. You can also work on ways to manage stress.

• SET A REGULAR BED TIME – AND WAKE-UP TIME. Develop bedtime routines to wind down after a busy day. While it may be unrealistic to expect older kids to turn in early, have them to turn off their phones and other devices prior to bedtime. Encourage them to develop their own rituals for a good night’s sleep – and trying to catch up on the weekends doesn’t count.

LIVE BY EXAMPLE. Be a role model for healthy behaviors. It doesn’t mean you have to changeup everything at once, set goals and take baby steps. Teaching your kids about heart health now will help them live longer, healthier lives for their own future.

Inspiring Creativity: MIAMI FINE ARTS ACADEMY of 15 years Celebrating

As Miami Fine Arts Academy marks its 15th anniversary, we sat down with the visionary founders, to delve into the inspiring journey of this prestigious institution. Established in 2009, the academy has flourished into one of the nation’s leading performing arts schools, offering a diverse array of classes in music, art, and dance under one roof.

Looking ahead, the owners reveal exciting plans for the future, including the opening of a new location in Coral Gables and the vision of establishing a dedicated Performing Arts Center.

1. What inspired the establishment of Miami Fine Arts Academy, and what milestones have you achieved since its inception in 2009?

Miami Fine Arts Academy was established in 2009 with the vision of creating an arts education venue where students of all ages could explore and develop their creative talents. Over the years, the academy has grown to become one of the largest performing arts schools in the country, offering a wide range of classes in music, art, and dance under one roof. There have been so many milestones since we began in 2009, but some of the most notable include expanding to two locations, soon to be three. Also seeing our students perform at prestigious venues, and the moment when we hired our former student of many years as a teacher at the academy.

2. As you celebrate your 15th anniversary this year, what highlights or memorable moments stand out in the academy’s journey?

Highlights from the past 15 years include hosting annual recitals, participating in prestigious events like performances at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Carnegie Hall, the Arsht Center, the New World Center, and most recently Jackie Gleason Theater at Fillmore. Other highlight include seeing our students achieve personal milestones such as winning competitions and being accepted into prestigious arts programs. We are in awe during our recitals, witnessing the incredible talent of our students as they perform. Memorable moments, although difficult, also include our successful adaptation to online classes

during the pandemic, ensuring continuous learning for our students.

3. Can you describe the range of classes and programs offered at Miami Fine Arts Academy and what sets it apart from other performing arts schools in Miami?

Miami Fine Arts Academy offers music lessons in piano, guitar, voice, violin, and drums; dance classes, including ballet and “mommy and me” toddler classes; and art lessons in drawing and mixed media. What sets us apart is the variety of programs available under one roof, the quality of our instructors, and our commitment to personalized arts education tailored to each student’s needs and goals. Being an educational partner with Steinway & Sons further enhances our music program, providing students access to the industry’s best pianos.

4. How do you ensure that students receive high-quality instruction in music, art, and dance, and what criteria do you use to select your team of teachers?

We ensure high-quality instruction by hiring the most qualified and experienced teachers who are passionate about their craft. We are picky about our teachers: our selection criteria include educational background, professional experience, and a track record of helping students achieve their artistic dreams. We also facilitate regular staff training and development programs to help maintain our high standards.

5. What success stories or achievements of your students that you are particularly proud of?

We are proud of our students who have won local and national competitions, performed at prestigious venues, and been accepted into top arts programs and schools. We have also observed how many of our students have gained increased self-confidence through their studies at Miami Fine Arts Academy, which is equally rewarding.

6. How does Miami Fine Arts Academy foster a supportive and nurturing environment for students to explore and develop their creative talents?

We foster a supportive environment by creating a community where students feel valued and encouraged. Our one-on-one lessons allow for personalized attention, and we offer numerous performance opportunities to build confidence. We also encourage a well rounded approach to education, focusing on both skill development and personal growth.

7. Are there any upcoming projects, collaborations, or initiatives that the academy is excited about for the future?

We are excited about the upcoming opening of our new location in Coral Gables, which will allow us to serve even more students in Pinecrest, Coral Gables and South Miami.

8. Finally, what do you envision for the future of Miami Fine Arts Academy, and how do you plan to continue serving the artistic needs of the community?

In the future, we envision Miami Fine Arts Academy continuing to open more locations and evolve as a premier arts education institution. We plan to introduce new programs, enhance our facilities, hire more amazing staff, and create community partnerships. And we dream about having our own performing Arts Center to give all of our students an opportunity to display an art piece or Perform their piece more frequently throughout the year. Our goal is to continue providing exceptional arts education and inspiring the next generation of artists in our community.

From Monkey Bars to Lifelong Bonds: Teaching Kids the Art of Friendship

Whether it’s at home, school, or at the park, friendships during our youth are probably one of the most basic concepts we learn as children.

Surveys show that friendships play a crucial role in the development and well-being of children in several ways:

Social Development: Friendships help children learn important social skills, such as cooperation, communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution.

Emotional Support: Friends provide emotional support and companionship, which is vital for children’s emotional well-being.

Self-Esteem: Positive friendships contribute to children’s self-esteem and self-confidence. Being accepted and valued by peers boosts children’s sense of self-worth and helps them develop a positive self-image.

Cognitive Development: Friendships offer opportunities for cognitive development as children engage in collaborative play, problem-solving activities, and discussions with their peers.

However, friendships are bound to have conflicts, and that’s where teachers and parents can help children by implementing a preventative plan for guiding children on how to be a good friend.

Here are seven tips for teaching kids how to be a good friend: Explain the concept of ‘communication’ and how one person listens or ‘hears’ what the other person is saying’ as the other person speaks.

Ask the child to define a ‘friend’ and what it means to them to have a friend. Have them name a friend and why they enjoy having them as a friend or what makes them special.

Explain the concept of sharing physical objects, such as toys or food, and provide an example.

Demonstrate the acceptance of disappointment. Ask the child: How would you feel if the same day you went over to your friend’s house to play and they did not let you play with their favorite toy? If

the child responds with ‘sad’ or something similar, explain that sadness is often called disappointment, and it’s okay to feel that way.

Explore the concept of sharing ‘thoughts and feelings’. Ask them: Do you think it would be okay to share your feelings of sadness and/ or disappointment with your friend? Tell them that sharing feelings in a kind way is a positive thing to do.

Revisit the term friendship and what it means to ‘support each other’.

Introduce the concept of ‘speaking up’. Sometimes a child may feel they are not being heard, even though there are friends and family all around them. Explain to them they are never alone, and all they have to do is ‘speak up’ and talk to someone about how they are feeling or what is hurting them.

Remind the child that a friend could also be a teacher, family member, or other adult in their life.

Take the time during play, mealtime, or bedtime to introduce these concepts, your child will benefit from the comfort and support of a lasting friendship.

Overall, friendships are integral to children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development, playing a significant role in shaping their well-being and sense of identity.
