Global Politics - Case study: Young people and Brexit They found that one of young people’s main concerns was that Britain will become less tolerant and more racist after Brexit However, it is true that the younger you are, the more likely you were to vote to stay in the EU – studies suggest just over 70% of 18-24 year-olds voted Remain, while just under 30% opted to vote Leave. The older you are, the more likely you were to vote Leave. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/article/b8d097b0-3ad4-4dd9-aa25-af6374292de0 Women's rights: It was billed as the first time women outnumbered men at Westminster, and it was easy to believe as potential MPs from all over the country milled around the palace’s committee rooms and gathered for a vast photoshoot to celebrate the centenary of the Parliament (Qualification of Women) Act. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/women Theresa May: “More women in elected office means a greater voice speaking out on issues that affect women, certainly. It means a greater focus on preventing gender-based violence, on girls’ education, on childcare and on women’s health. But the benefits are also felt more widely. After all, if half the population is systematically excluded from politics then you’re also excluding half the talent.” https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/nov/07/womans-place-is-in-elected-office-may-women-mps-of -the-world-conference Case study: In 2013, the Indian government took positive steps to improve the lives of women and girls. The UK works with other partners to support women who are primarily the victims of trafficking. This includes the “Stop Trafficking” web portal. DFID’s programme in India is aimed at helping girls stay in secondary school, thus pushing back the age of marriage. DFID is also investing in interventions that reinforce each other and deliver in the long term: family planning, health and nutrition, microfinance, and skills for jobs. https://www.gov.uk/government/case-studies/womens-rights-in-india

2. Sustainability (Veganism) Case study: Palm leather vegan alternative to cow hide Dutch designer Tjeerd Veenhoven's rugs made from a palm leaf material, called palm leather, are a sustainable and vegan alternative to traditional leather made from animal skin. The move towards eating vegan and buying vegan products for the home, Veenhoven suggests, has been pushed by real problems that the world faces including the need to reduce the amount of meat that we eat. As people become increasingly aware that the amount of animal products we consume is harming our environment, we will move towards more sustainable and alternative options. https://www.dezeen.com/2018/11/16/palm-leather-vegan-rugs-tjeerd-veenhoven/ Case study 2: Cork studio The Cork Studio, a garden building made almost entirely out of cork, has been constructed by Studio Bark as a building prototype that can be completely recycled, reused or composted. To challenge the architecture industry's dependence on "unhealthy single-use materials", London-based architects Studio Bark sought to demonstrate how one eco-friendly material can could be used to form an entire building envelope. "We built the Cork Studio to show that there is an alternative." -

Bee’s and sustainabaility: Our actions can have direct and indirect consequences on the population of honey bee colonies within an area. Direct effects are the transfer of pests and diseases, resulting from the introduction of diseased bees or contaminated\ted equipment by beekeepers. Imported bees can have deleterious effects on local bee populations. Indirect consequences occur through environmental damage such as destruction of habitat, or through poisoning at lethal and sub-lethal levels by the use of pesticides, agrochemicals and pollution( By thinking about Bees’ Needs and taking simple actions to meet them, people across the UK can help give bees and pollinators the food and shelter they need to survive.https://www.shaftesbury.co.uk/en/sustainability/case-studies/bees--needs-week.html Plastic and recycling: recycling isn’t enough Recycling is the grown-up version of squeezing our eyes shut, sticking our fingers in our ears and shouting “lalalalalala! Plastic – unlike glass or metal – cannot be recycled infinitely, and after a handful of times it will be discarded, where it will take centuries to degrade. One single water bottle will remain on the planet in some form for a minimum of 450 years. https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/plastic-waste-wish-recycling-bins-black-environment-green-shopping-a85 48736.html

4. Technology Case study: Cover designs backyard studio in LA using computer algorithms -

Design-build firm Cover, which uses computer algorithms to create customised backyard dwellings for homes, has completed its first project: a small studio in Los Angeles. "Unlike other prefab companies and builders, Cover is a technology company first, armed with a team of full-time software engineers, designers, manufacturing engineers and architects who have developed technology that streamlines the entire process of designing, buying, permitting, manufacturing and assembling Cover units," said Rivas. The emerging technology uses algorithms to generate every possible permutation of a design solution. We want technology things to be simpler and faster, that exactly what the company Cover has done. 5. Visual culture London southbank centre- space shifters art show A major group exhibition of sculptures and installations that explored perception and space. Many of the artworks in this exhibition were constructed from translucent materials such as glass, acrylic and polyester resins. Others involved the use of reflective materials, including stainless steel, polished bronze and, in one case, engine oil. Luscious and seductive – and often demonstrating huge technical accomplishment – these objects act as optical devices that enable us to see our surroundings in new and unexpected ways. 6. Product innovation and Service innovation Case study: period sex blanket -

This blanket by Thinx is designed to soak up blood, so that women on their period can have sex without ruining the bed sheets. Thinx, which creates absorbent underwear to be worn in place of tampons or panty liners, has transferred its patented technology to a bedspread. This type of product really shows how our way of thinking is evolving. It shows us that people are now understanding that two perfectly natural occurrences such as periods and sex and sex on a woman’s period are no longer seen as taboo. In fact the luxury design of the mat is almost encouraging and not off putting.

Case study: 3D-printed block of digital wood with Voxel printing

-

https://www.dezeen.com/2019/01/04/3d-printed-wood-columbia-university/ Engineers at Columbia University have 3D-printed a block of "digital wood", using a voxel technique that enables the creation of objects with rich internal textures. With voxel printing, designers can specify the qualities they want every point within a 3D space to have As voxel printing results in intricately arranged material particles throughout the resulting object, it offers designers nearly limitless manufacturing possibilities Almost everybody is aware of the shortage of trees we have due them being cut down to sustain our way of living. I think any attempt to reduce that problem should be at the top of our priority list.

-

Names for presentation: exposed truth Fighting for consciousness Fake authenticity - looks like natural wood but isn’t, art gallery expresses distorted views Changing reality Distorted reality Distorting perception Focusing on the outward, not the inward : sex blanket, palm leather rug Simple and effective: la house, art expo and sex blanket -

-

Back to simplicity: natural materials such as the wood, palm leather/cork house and minimal housing with few items on show Concerned youth - Brexit, art expo, sex blanket

Keywords: Conflicted Limitless Sustain living Natural Perception Translucent Alternative Tolerance We have gotten to a point where we are starting to question everything around us. As we continue to advance forward, we can’t help but look into our past and try to revert back to our original states. People are breaking free of unsustainable habits and norms which have been taught through generations and are seeing things for what they really are. This is guiding people in the direction of a more natural and resistance free way of living, whether it be the products they use or the mentality they adapt. Brainstorming Key words - Headline ideas

Brick wall and stairs - Lower angle facing upwards towards model sitting on stairs - Closeups of clothes with plain wall - Walking shot model facing away; emphasising the bag and shoes

Junkyard - Closeup of everyone walking - 1 Model moving around; Full length shots and closeups - Both Sitting on sofa / interacting scene - 1 fixing appearance in dirty mirror; perspective shot - Close-up shots of junky items in junkyard

Fence - Full length shot of group of friends behind fence; moving slightly and some looking directly at camera - Low shot looking up whilst models dance: like a rapper do - Models move around and dance

Screen Grabs Took advantage of a wall which conveniently had the same colours as our model’s eyeshadow

Playing around with creative visuals

We included bits of film where the model’s speak unscripted and added subtitles which we felt added to the creative direction we were going for

Outtakes We really like the set-up of the sofa and background but we didn’t like how the shadow covered the majority of our model.

This scene we had 2 models inside a boxing ring. We didn’t include it because it didn’t make sense to our film and the buildings in the background didn’t look good.

This scene we had two models walking and talking but we decided to go for the scene of the orange graffiti wall for the orange shirt instead and didn’t want to overuse in order not to lose its effect.

Critiques -

-

-

-

-

Her instagram feed is very inconsistent made up of some professional and high quality shots of her garments, some which are very obviously taken on a phone and unedited and some unrelated to her clothing brand . She seems to use her clothing brand’s instagram as her personal one and I think she should keep them separate as it does not look visually appealing. Her website has a minimalism theme going on yet is hard to navigate Out of 6 collections she only uploaded images to about 3 and they only consist of 3-6 very standard pictures of her garments. There only appears to be images of available items, it would be better to have all items shown with a ‘sold out’ sign as it can leave her website looking a bit bare. She uses a lot of text which makes it unengaging with the viewer and is visually unappealing

Improvements -

-

-

-

-

Make the website instantly engaging with a video featuring the collection / her garments Make the brand logo bold and very visible Give the homepage a longer scroll page include everything found on the website on the homepage Repetitive with many click though options people are lazy and don’t want to have to look hard to find something Have the face of Kim visible, gives the chance for people to connect to the brand easier Keep the viewer engaged with minimal but effective text - only if the viewer is invested they can click through to the About page which has a more elaborate explanation of the brand. Images are large and cover entire screen stretch to fit screen size so no details are lost High quality images with consistent editing filter Use of at least 3 fonts

Original creative direction - Use lighting to have multiple colors at once - Inside a studio - Play with perception - Art movement: Symbolism Feedback: - Focusing on too many things at once - Using lighting to change color could lose the detailing of the textured garments - Should focus on playing with perception as my main creative direction - Shoot outside and be playful

Mood board 2.0
