1889. 1918. 2020.

The 1889 Russian Flu Pandemic claimed two more victims and in 1892, an 18-months-old became an orphan. This young boy was raised by extended family and Three worldwide circumstances led him to become a strong, caring, hard-working pandemics the man who married and had two Newberry Opera children. Those children had their own children, and one of those House has was my mother. Some things become engraved on your family, weathered and they become foundational elements for future generations. The strong rocks you build upon. In the spring of 2020, the lobby was dark as the NOH team sat together for the first time since working from home. I remembered my great-grandfather and the sturdy foundation that his resilience gave him. I placed one foot on that rock. The other foot I put on the Opera House’s granite cornerstone, which reads 1881. The Opera House has done this; she has survived, thrived, and has never failed her community. One of our team members shouted out loud, “WE WILL NOT FAIL!” While the outburst scared us, it encouraged us. And at that moment, the team and the Opera House recognized what must happen. We had to open for our friends, our guests, our business owners downtown, our sanity. These past 18 months have not been easy. But you have made it a joy when the days were gray; you have helped us grow; you have walked with us as a team member every step. Thank you. This season is one of resilience and a testament to HER strength to guide us and bring us closer to each other. We aren’t out of the woods, but we have tools now, and we will make it with continued support. Many things have changed in our industry; some are good and some make us wrinkle our noses. Some shows are higher priced, some tiered, some aren’t, some artists choose to retire, and new ones are taking their place. Change. But, change can be good when it is built on a strong foundation provided by a building with a gracious soul. She says to you, our champions, guests, and community- Welcome Home!

Interview with Carlos Benetó, member of Spanish Brass

Spanish Brass will travel to Newberry this November for a special free outdoor community concert. Carlos Benetó with Spanish Brass talks about performing around the world in over 50 countries during the 33 years of the group. “This is the magic of the job that we do. You can bring it wherever you want. You can connect easily when you are playing music on the stage. If you try to communicate with someone by talking, you can get some of it, but with music it is very simple and gets straight to your soul.” This sense of connection brought five students from the Spanish Youth Orchestra together in 1989. Carlos Winners of the remembers, “The very first concert that we played Spanish National for our colleagues in the orchestra was in the lunch Music Award in room.” Their colleagues challenged them to 2020 continue, but it wasn’t until they won first prize in the 6th International Brass Quintet Competition in 1996 and went on tour that they took the leap to quit their day jobs with professional orchestras. With over three decades of excellence and creativity, Spanish Brass was rewarded with the Spanish National Music Award in 2020. Carlos jokingly says that brass instruments don’t always get respect in the hierarchy of instruments, but this time they did. Carlos blushingly mentions, “This is the highest recognition in our country for a musician. During 2020 with so many performances canceled, we were not sure if we were going to go on. And, suddenly we got a call. It was them saying, ‘Hey guys you are doing great. Keep going!” What should be expected when Spanish Brass comes to Newberry? “Our goal is to try to help the audience see what a brass quintet can be…to take the audience on a journey from Baroque to Jazz to something really Spanish.”

Interview with Barry Abernathy, member of Appalachian Road Show

This December performance may be the first time Appalachian Road Show has performed at the Opera House, but the performers themselves are not strangers to our town. Many came to the Opera House with the group Mountain Heart. However, Barry Abernathy first came during the 90s when he was playing with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver.

Called the “great American romantic” by the “New York Times,” SC’s own Edwin McCain has found a way to balance massive success, a year-round touring schedule, and a family life. Hear songs like “I’ll Be,” “I Could Not Ask for More” and “Shooting Stars.” Similar Artists: Jake Hoot, Keb’ Mo’, Robert Earl Keen

Barry talks about the first time he heard Doyle, “Doyle was always my hero. When I was about 14, I went Christmas shopping with my mom…and came across Doyle’s ‘Rock My Soul’ album. “I was born with no fingers on my right hand… but my mom said if I could learn to play a song all the way through on my great grandmother’s banjo, I could get one of my own. Years later I find myself playing the song I learned onstage with Doyle.”

“...that was the origins of American Music...”

Barry explains the inspiration behind Appalachian Road Show, “The concept is to bring to light the settling of the Appalachian Mountains and the way the culture and lifestyle of the people who came over to settle there influenced the musical culture. From Ireland, Scotland to West Africa they brought story songs, hymns, and Celtic fiddle tunes. The West African people brought the banjo with them. That was the origins to American music.”

Sun. Dec 12, 2021 | 4:00 p.m. // T1: $55 // T2: $45 // T3: $35 | Students 1/2 Price

Barry talks about how their last album resonates with today’s events, “When we started talking about the new project we discussed the plight and tribulation of the Appalachian people …from love lost to paying taxes. We were scheduled to release ‘Tribulations’ in March of 2020…it was meant to be and hopefully helped some people deal with all we’ve been going through.” Come enjoy music of the Appalachian people in the first half of the show followed by Christmas from the mountains in the second half.

Troy Coleman was attending the University of Texas at Austin when he got his moniker Cowboy Troy from a friend to help distinguish him from other Troys at the school. This 6’ 5” cowboy hat wearing Country Rapper has never had trouble standing out. He found his tribe when he met up with the Musik Mafia. Troy explains, “I met John Rich back in the summer of ‘93, when he was playing bass with the band Texassee, whose name would later be changed to Lonestar. They were playing in a bar that I was hanging out in. On my first trip to Nashville in ’99, he introduced me to Big Kenny. We’ve been friends all these years. Right about that time everybody wanted to do these Musik Mafia nights on Tuesday nights. I was still living in Dallas at this time so I would drive up. Musik Mafia nights featured any kind of music… Rock music, Rap music, Spoken Word. We had artists doing live painting…interpretive dance – whatever you could think of. We did 70 some odd Tuesday nights in a row. People started getting record deals.”

“Then when I was old enough to go to Country bars I would see all these pick-up trucks in the parking lot blasting Rap music. You go into the clubs and the last 15 minutes of the hour they would switch to Rap. Every time a Rap song came on you would see a bunch of cowboys on the dance floor. I knew I wasn’t the only one who had an appreciation for it.” In 2020, Cowboy Troy released “Galaxy” - 4 EPs with 4 songs - each with their own vibe. His love of Sci-Fi meshed with his love of all types of music from party band music to “retro zone out” to traditional Texas Swing. There are no boxes for Cowboy Troy.

“I had a plan to work my way up the corporate ladder at Foot Locker, but one day I checked my phone on my break, and it was a message from John.
