celebrating and fighting for the emotions and spirit we desire for the Community and State. And more personally, for peace. We have found peace in knowing we support each other; we can face anything together; we can grow and learn and expand and explore together. The midseason magazine is a beautiful, tangible articulation of the relationship we have to change and our inseparable relationships all in one book.

Change. This word brings with it an emotion for most. After all, change is the only constant we have; at least, this is what I hear. Over the last months everything around us has undergone some array of change, and with this came the flurry of emotions. Change and emotions are like salt and pepper or ketchup and mustard; they go together. Inseparable. Inseparable is precisely what the Opera House, the shows, the guests, the sponsors, the donors are to each other. The staff can’t work without shows or a building, and donors and sponsors fulfill a spirit of place and mission. So throughout this time, we have been inseparable, navigating the changes together and

Jazz music was born in the early 20th century originating from New Orleans. Jazz was the by product of the unique cultural environment. Being a fan of Jazz music, learning that Branford Marsalis was from New Orleans, I knew that could only make his experience as a Jazz musician even more powerful. With accolades from becoming a multi-winning artist with three Grammy’s, gaining a citation by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master, and a being an avatar of contemporary artistic excellence it’s amazing what growing up in a powerful city can do to help start your future. “It’s hard to play instruments, the saxophone is more than enough for me. But I was playing clarinet in high school.” Starting out with the clarinet and later gravitating to the saxophone, Marsalis explained the story to me, “There were these three really pretty girls going to a dance, and I followed them to the dance. But I would never speak to them because I’m incredibly shy in that regard… I watched them and said “Man, I got to find a way to meet girls.” He then noticed there was a band and thought “I can’t play the clarinet in a band” so he then decided to learn how to play the saxophone. “I started out as a R&B musician [with the clarinet], and I joined the band but still didn’t get any of the girls.” In his time at Berkley College, Marsalis went on to meet Joey Calderazzo who will be joining him on stage at the Opera House. Calderazzo’s brother Jean was a drummer at Berkley College and Joey came to visit for a week. “I was so amazed at the way he played and his exuberance and his enthusiasm.” Once Marsalis moved to New York, (where Calderazzo lived) he noticed they were just always in the same place in the same area.

The Newberry Opera House Guild’s mission is to help build a thriving performing arts center through fundraising and education. Created in 2004, The Newberry Opera House Guild wanted to offer financial support to the Opera House and help promote its endeavors throughout the Midlands. The Guild meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 P.M on the Opera House stage. The Guild is open to anyone with an interest in helping to raise funds to support the performing arts, and in helping to educate and enliven the surrounding communities through the arts. Guild members help organize 2-3 major fundraising events each year. In recent years, these events have included an annual Oyster Roast, Boston Butt Sale, a 50/50 raffle and more. 2020-2021 Donor Digest Gifts made to the newberry opera house july 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021 The Newberry Opera House is one of the most efficient performing arts centers in the region, covering more than 70% of its budget through earned revenue like ticket sales. However, we still call on our corporate and private citizens to help us fund key free or low-cost programs that benefit thousands of students and families in Newberry County and the Midlands. Last year, charitable gifts from both individuals and corporations added over $605,000 that helped us deliver on our mission to enhance the economic and cultural development of Newberry County and the Midlands through the window of the Arts in concert with educational opportunities for all.
